Hi Everyone Hi everyone Melbourne Cup Day was a huge blur of glamour as Sarah and I managed to snap off about 60 group photos of the glamorous ladies (and men) of Glasshouse Country in a couple of hours.

Some of these images we have shared in the Out and About page and the rest of them are on our Facebook Page www.facebook.com/glasshousecountrynews It was a fabulous day and everyone we spoke to at the Beerwah RSL, Beerwah Hotel and Club Glass House seemed to be making the most of the day – and with the effort people had taken to dress up, nearly everyone was happy to have their photo taken (this makes our job so much easier).

The P&C from Beerburrum School were really happy as the event held at the Beerwah Hotel was also a fundraiser for the school with $5.00

from each ticket sold going to the school. This is an excellent initiative by the Beerwah Hotel, each year they allocate the funds to a different school.

The next glamorous event for us to be reporting on will be the High School Graduations – yes at the end of next week it will be time for the Year 12s to say goodbye to their school days.

So you can expect to see plenty more gorgeous photos after the Beerwah High and the Glasshouse Country Christian College events and if parents would also like to send in images please do, we will just need the names of the people in the photos.

Beerwah beckons

Things are starting to happen in Beerwah.

A new entry sign.

Rumours that council has purchased a significant parcel of land in the centre of town for a possible ‘green heart’.

The start of a $3.5 million project that will give locals the chance to help shape the growth and planning for the town.

Last week, the finishing touches were put on a new welcome sign to the town, which features the iconic pineapple and which complements the region’s first signage installed at Glass House Mountains last year.

The sign, made from precast concrete and recycled ironbark timber, was designed by Maleny artist Sarah Rayner.

Cr Grosskreutz said the new sign is the start of a $3.5 million project for the town. The next stage is the roll out of the ‘Place +’ program, which kicks off this week.

She said Council wants to find out what people love and value about Beerwah by gathering the thoughts, ideas and opinions of local residents, community organisations and businesses.

Council’s new ‘Place +’ program relies on strong community engagement and Beerwah is an important project using this approach. According to Council, it is about understanding the social and economic issues surrounding a place just as much as it is about functional and environmental issues. It is about acknowledging individual and community values in understanding the unique qualities of each place, before embarking on change. Those qualities include the physical environment, the history and culture as well as the community’s dreams and hopes for the future.

Cr Grosskreutz said that as Beerwah’s population grows and it becomes a Major Activity Centre, it is vital to talk to the people who live and work and play in the town.

“People connected to Beerwah are invited and encouraged to be involved in this project and to commit to working together over the long term, towards a positive future,” Cr Grosskreutz said.

“The intent is for Beerwah to have prosperity and vitality, while retaining its strong sense of community.

“Recent approval of several significant projects has shown confidence in the future for Beerwah and we hope that our ‘Place +’ process will identify opportunities and encourage partnerships with the community to maintain this momentum.

Cr Grosskreutz said council had spent a significant amount of money in the local area in the last term, and hinted at another major announcement to be made in coming weeks, regarding the purchase of a major parcel of land in the heart of Beerwah.

Steve Attrill has announced that he will be contesting the division left vacant by outgoing Councillor, Anna Grosskreutz.

This is the second time Steve has stood for Council. At the last local government election in 2008 he earned one in four of the primary vote and in his words 'he is back', with the same vigour to contest the 2012 council election.

Steve and his wife Rogina moved to Glass House Mountains late in 1999, and not long after, they expanded their family to include a daughter who is now nine-years-old.

Steve had grown up and worked predominately in South East Queensland but when I asked him why he chose to settle in Glass House Mountains he said ‘because it was so green’.

Most of us who are not born and bred locals will understand the appeal that the area has for visitors, and it definitely makes sense choosing it as a place to settle into and raise a family.

Although Steve has lived in the area for over a decade his work life and community involvement has focused on Caboolture where he owned and operated a number of businesses including Video Shops and Finanical Planning services.

It is this experience, along with that of working in a managerial role in banking and finance industry that Steve believes has given him the skills required as a Councillor. Having worked in a bureaucracy he understands the constraints, but also how to work within them.

He also believes his strength in bringing about resolution through mediation will be of real benefit in trying to achieve good outcomes for the

community.

The role of a Councillor these days since amalgamation is significantly different from the past and Steve is confident that if elected he has the skills to hit the ground running.

“If elected, I will stop the cash drain from the hinterland to the coast and ensure our community is represented in council,” Mr Attrill said.

Now that he has formally announced that he will be running, Steve will be completely focused on engaging the community. He will be embracing a strong digital communication approach but will also be getting out there door knocking and getting to listen to as many locals as possible.

Should climbers cough up more for rescue?

Over the past week there has been plenty of debate about whether the penalties are harsh enough for those climbers who ignore warnings and signage about unsafe conditions on our local mountains.

Last week, a local daily newspaper reported calls from some members of the SES that penalties should be increased for those who risk both their own lives and those of emergency service personnel by climbing in unsafe conditions.

We took to the streets to find out what locals think.

Landsborough resident Sharon said the fines, currently $300.00 aren’t hefty enough.

She said climbers who get into difficulty should be asked to pay back the costs of their rescue, and questioned Sharon from Landsborough the valuable time repeated rescues took; particularly when and if emergency services were needed elsewhere.

“There needs to be much more of a deterrent

for those climbers who blatantly disregard the signage,” Edward said. “The signage needs to clearly indicate that there is a large penalty for anyone who doesn’t comply.”

Their comments were echoed by Wayne, another Landsborough resident, who agreed the penalties should be increased.

“These people are using valuable resources when they need to be rescued. What if our emergency services were needed elsewhere?”

Last week we also placed the question on our facebook page as we are keen to see what the community think, one comment that has been interesting is from Andrea Hodge - It is a bit

unfair if people genuinely get lost, especially our overseas visitors. I think that travel insurance companies should look at including this kind of thing in their policies; 'emergency wilderness rescue' or something to that effect. pm

On Monday, October 31, the Glasshouse SES Group was activated at 4.30pm to assist a 25-year-old German woman on Mt Beerwah.

The woman and her male friend knew the mountain was closed to climbers but she was desperate to get a photo from the top. She reached the top and then decided that the track down was pretty hairy and she would attempt what she thought was a better decent.

Unfortunately, much like the slopes of Mt Tibrogargan there is a large amount of slab and loose rock/stones and these conditions trap the unwary climber in that they keep taking risks by going down further and eventually reach the point where it is too dangerous to continue and are unable to climb back up.

The rescue crew were told she was only 60 metres from the base but this was not the case.

The crew proceeded to the top to locate the woman. As night fell, light rain and mist set in on the mountain making conditions more dangerous.

The mountain has been closed for some time and there was plenty of fresh evidence of more recent rock falls. After several attempts, the woman was observed some 150 metres from the rescue crew but she was in a position deemed to be too dangerous for the crew to proceed as there were no suitable anchor points to secure the rescue equipment and effect a rescue safely. As the woman had adequate clothing, food and water it was agreed that rather than endanger the crew any further she would remain on the mountain and a helicopter was arranged for first light in the morning. The rescue team eventually arrived back at the car park at 11.30pm.

Group Leader Robert Barry stated that in this case the climbers had acknowledged that they had seen the mountain closed signage and climbed over the fence to access the track. Poor information on the location of the woman and the miserable conditions led to a lengthy effort by the rescue team given that most had already completed a hard day’s work. He thanked the climbing team of Tim, Graeme, Jason, Cameron and Dave, and the ground crew of Ross, Robert and Lou.

What’s happening The 93rd Remembrance Day Commemorative Service will be held at the Cenotaph, Settlers Rotary Park, Glass House Mountains, form up 1050 hours, commencement 1055 hours. A light luncheon will be available at the RSL Club after the service.

Military vehicle Kevan, a member of the Military Jeep Club of Queensland, has never served in a war and is grateful for the fact, but has had a long time fascination with military vehicles after he received his first book on the subject when he was 11-years-old.

“Some people collect teapots, I collect military vehicles,” he said.

Over the years Kevan has owned a number of different vehicles, starting off with a Dodge power wagon that came from the Gaza Strip.

“These vehicles were the ultimate workhorse at a time when there were hardly any cars in manufacture.

“I love the fact that what you see is what you get – there’s nothing fancy about them, but they served a purpose,” said Kevan.

Kevan recently spent $8,000 on his Jeep, but saysit’s a small price to pay to keep his passion for our military history alive.

For some, it’s a day of good luck, for others, a day when prophecies come true, and for many, a day of commemoration for our forefathers who bravely fought for the peace our nation enjoys today.

For one local girl though, it’s a very special day for another reason entirely.

Tayla Hunn of Peachester will wake up on Friday morning, the 11/11/11, and celebrate her 11th birthday, in a special number sequence that occurs only once every 100 years.

And the Peachester student is well aware of the day’s significance.

“It’s pretty special, all the 11’s,” Tayla said.

Although Tayla made her entrance into the world much earlier in the morning than 11.00am on that day in November 11 years ago, her mum Vicki was quick to point out that the 11 phenomenon doesn’t end there for this family, who moved to Peachester, you guessed it, 11 years ago.

So how will Tayla celebrate such a rare and exciting occasion?

“We’re having a huge camp out on our property, with all our friends and family,” Tayla said.

Hopefully, Tayla and her mum have finished sending out all 111 invitations!

On Sunday, November 20, the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade will celebrate 20 years of operation. The original Rural Brigade in Landsborough folded in the mid sixties and it was only after very severe fires in the Peachester and Mt Mellum areas in 1991 that the present brigade was reformed, following huge public concern.

To mark the milestone of 20 years, a special day of celebrations will be held at the Fire Station in Maleny Street, Landsborough. There will be heaps of memorabilia on display for people to peruse and see how much our brigade has accomplished in the last 20 years. In 1991, the brigade started with no equipment other than a few knapsacks and rake hoes and has now grown into a group with a strong membership of dedicated volunteer fire fighters and support personnel, three appliances and modern communication equipment, all housed in a substantial fire station.

Following the open day at 1.30pm, a number of current members will be presented with Queensland Fire and Rescue medals for 15 years of service. Another important event to be marked on the day will be the opening of our fabulous new training room. The brigade was fortunate to receive a building grant from Queensland Fire and Rescue to build this new space, which will be dedicated to local identity Stan Tutt, in recognition of the huge contribution he made, not only as the Secretary of the original Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade but to the entire community over many years. Local builder Troy Brahim has achieved a fantastic result in a very short space of time, of course with the amazing contribution of many volunteer hours from our members.

Good news keeps coming from Beerwah High It seems we just can’t get enough good news from Beerwah State High!

This week, the school is celebrating the success of four of its senior students, who scooped up a lion’s share of business bursaries on offers from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Students Stacey Bentley, Jenna Ross, Rachel McMahon and Jake Greasley each received one of only 12 bursaries awarded by the University across the Sunshine Coast. The bursaries, each worth $1,500, will help the students with the costs associated with their university studies.

Along with their parents, the students were excited to receive the news of the bursaries, which were awarded on the basis of their results in business subjects, as well as overall achievement.

Beerwah High deputy principal Matt Bradley said the school was thrilled for the students for being recognised and rewarded for their outstanding achievement.

“We are delighted to see the University of the Sunshine Coast recognise our students, and for them to achieve four of the 12 bursaries handed out on the Sunshine Coast is certainly impressive,” Mr Bradley said.

Sports awards’ night a golden event Olympic gold medallist Christian Sprenger was the special guest at the recent Glasshouse Country Christian College’s Sports Award’s Night.

Christian presented medals and trophies to GCCC young sportsmen and women and then gave an inspiring speech where he talked about his journey to Olympic gold.

“I used to be pretty average at swimming when I started at age eight. I began swimming because my brother did it, but then I started to really enjoy it,” he said.

“During high school all the other boys thought I was uncool because I was doing swimming instead of rugby but I didn’t really care because I loved it so much.

“If anyone had told me that I could get an Olympic gold medal just by swimming 50,000km or so, I probably would have given up on the spot,” he said. “However, by breaking it down into smaller steps, like a series of five kilometre swims, the goal became achievable and it was a good lesson to me on how to approach the whole of life by breaking big goals down into little ones.”

Approximately 300 people attended the Sports Awards and they were treated to several demonstrations by GCCC’s cheerleading teams who recently won first place in the state titles.

GCCC Sports students had performed well this year and there were a truckload of medals and trophies to hand out. The Primary Sportsman of the Year was awarded to Ryan Sauer and Primary Sportswoman of the year to Natasha Hoeksema.

Secondary Sportsman of the year went to Nathan Siggs and Secondary Sportswoman of the year was awarded to Rebekah White.

Characters come alive at Peachester School

Peachester State School students recently enjoyed an afternoon tea and fancy dress parade to relish in the festivities of our Book Fair. All of the students put in a magnificent effort and showed great spirit on the day.

Every year the students look forward to the Book Week parade and once again it was an absolute success.

I think the teachers secretly have just as much fun dressing up, which this year included our very own Buzz Light Year aka Mr Duffy!

Prizes were awarded for Best Costumes, Best Colouring-in or Book Report which could be redeemed at the Book Fair. It’s always a treasure to see some of the creations that come from simply ransacking the wardrobes or dressup box at home. Thank you to the teachers and Mrs Dorothy Robb for organising a fun-filled afternoon, and to the parents who helped with the masterpiece outfits. There were smiles all around.

Science fires up Local skies will light up tonight as Beerwah State High’s next fireworks demonstration goes off with a bang.

Part of an innovative science program for Year 10 physics and chemistry students, Beerwah State High’s fireworks unit is the only one of its kind in Australia.

Science teacher and licensed fireworks operator, Mr Peter Muchow, started the program to show students the more spectacular side of science.

He believes the fireworks unit draws students who may not have otherwise been interested in physics and chemistry into the subject.

“We are the only school in the state that uses fireworks on campus and because it is unique, the kids think it is great. They love the practical side of the subject and learning something they have never experienced before,” he said.

Beerwah High’s fireworks science program also has links with the CSIRO and the Scientists in Schools program. Last year university professor Allan Paull, renowned for his work with scramjets, visited the school to help conduct experiments with fuses and blast pressure. Mr Muchow was also invited to attend the National Science Conference in Launceston in 2009 to discuss Beerwah’s fireworks studies.

Balloons that connect

It’s the little things that can make the biggest impact. Just ask Mooloolah mother of five, Natalie Pettingill, whose new party balloon business is certainly doing just that.

Natalie started up her own party balloon business, which supplies helium balloons, helium and lolly bags, after being frustrated having to travel across the coast to buy helium balloons for family celebrations.

This got Natalie thinking, and after looking into it, and a lot of positive encouragement from friends and family, and a cause very close to her heart, Connect3e Balloons came into being.

Despite a hectic family life, the decision to start up a new venture was an easy one for Natalie, who donates all the profits from the business to Connect, an Australian-based charity.

Natalie and her family were already familiar with the charity, which is committed to embracing, educating and empowering Karen refugees, after visiting neighbouring Thailand in 2009, and witnessing first-hand the work the charity is doing to help the refugees relocate.

“When I saw the need for a local helium balloon supplier, it made obvious sense. l am already a

volunteer for Connect doing their receipting once a month, and this is a great business to have my children involved with so they learn to love others, live generously, seek justice, they get to see how much is raised and donated and the difference that makes to others,” she said.

“I am hoping to inspire them to help others less fortunate, and the local community’s support so far has been wonderful and very encouraging.

“My favourite quote is ‘A day is not perfect until you have done something for someone who can never repay you’.

Connect3e Balloons was setup for the sole purpose of raising funds for projects helping the Karen refugees from Burma, and one hundred per cent of the profits go directly to Connect3e.

Racey Grannies revealed

Sausages weren’t the only thing sizzling at the recent launch of the ‘Racey Grannies 2012 Calendar’, an initiative to raise funds for the Endeavour Foundation. Heather Christie, who has been previously featured in GCNews, is participating in the 2012 Great Endeavour Rally in her car a purple 1966 HR Holden Sedan (Car 1959), and thought this would be a great way to raise funds.

Heather’s rally team is called ‘Why Not’ which is exactly what the grannies said when asked if they’d be willing to pose tastefully semi-nude for the calendar, knowing it was for a good cause.

Caloundra and Glasshouse country celebrate King James On Saturday, October 29, the Parish of Caloundra-Glasshouse Country embarked on allday celebrations of the 400th Anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible.

Beginning at the Mary MacKillop Centre in Beerwah, Fr Ken Goodger celebrated a very well supported 1662 Book of Common Prayer ‘Lord’s Supper’ with readings from an original faximile copy of the 1611 King James Bible, donated to the Anglican Parish by the local Catholic Community. This was followed by a community King James Bible display with their family histories and a festive morning tea.

A sumptuous lunch was then enjoyed at an open church and Bible display at Saint Thomas’ Mooloolah Valley.

In the afternoon, over 50 gathered at Saint Andrew’s Caloundra for a ‘High Tea’ and King James Bible exhibition followed by a 1662 Sung Evensong led by Br John Stevenson OGS. After such a successful day we look ford to the 350th Anniversary of the 1662’ Book of Common Prayer’ next year!

News in Brief More parking for Landsborough commuters Commuters will benefit from 23 additional car parking spaces at Landsborough train station.

This follows the recent formation of the Landsborough Railway Parking committee, who are currently preparing a submission to the State Government to lobby for unused land to be turned into car parking.

TransLink Acting CEO Matt Longland said local commuters and businesses would benefit with more parking options in the area.

TransLink is responding to feedback from the local community by installing the additional spaces.

Books for Kids Kick off the 2012 National Year of Reading by helping disadvantaged kids start their own library.

Sunshine Coast Libraries, in partnership with the Salvation Army, are running their annual Christmas book drive to give the gift of reading to children across the region from November 1 to December 13.

Books for Kids has been operating for 12 years and has provided over 4,000 kids with a new book for Christmas.

Pool safety The Queensland Government’s pool safety hotline took up to 1,500 calls a day in the lead up to the November 4 pool safety register deadline.

By this date pool owners simply needed to have checked their pool or spa was on the pool safety register. There were no associated costs.

However, owners of pools and spas who did not register by November 4 face fines of $200 or court imposed penalties of up to $2,000.

All Queensland pools and spas must comply with the latest pool safety standard by November 30, 2015.

Owners only ever need a pool safety certificate if they sell or lease their property. It is important to clarify this point as some media articles and pool inspectors have stated otherwise. No safety certificate is required until you sell or lease a property with a pool.

We frequently come across people who want a tablet computer for either business or personal reasons but whom hate Apple. And while there are quite a few tablets available on the market now… some are light years ahead of the rest in terms of practicality and functionality.

The Gigabyte S1080 tablet is our pick of the best ‘non-Apple tablets’ around. It has a 10.1” screen and runs Windows 7 Home Premium (also available in Pro). So for those of you already familiar with Win 7, it can be a good choice.

The S1080 takes advantage of the touchscreen capabilities of Windows 7 – but expect these to improve vastly with the release of Windows 8 (mid to late 2012).

For those wanting to use it for work, it also features a wide variety of ports, including a USB 2.0 and even a faster USB 3.0 one.

There's also Gigabit Ethernet, an SD card reader, a SIM card slot, a VGA port and a slot for an additional battery. It only has one front mounted camera, but has a pair of speakers, an in-built microphone and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity. It’s a bit too heavy to be comfortable by tablet standards, but the sheer amount of functionality still makes this a very worthwhile tablet.

It also comes with a 320GB hard disk drive which is massive by tablet standards, but it does contribute to the S1080's weight of 895 grams.

The S1080 can also be purchased with a Keyboard Kit which includes a portable keyboard and carry case. This is designed to transform the tablet into a mobile workstation – and this it does very well.

Wizard and Glass - not just the name of the Stephen King book that I’m currently reading, but a reflection of my thoughts for today thoughts of the miracle of modern technology and how it’s ever further changing the ways in which we interact with our environment.

They say that magic is just science we don’t understand yet, a quip that I’d have to agree with upon witnessing the latest interactive research by Microsoft and other gaming and virtualisation companies.

You would most likely all be familiar with the Nintendo Wii, a gaming console which lets you interact with its software by swinging a controller through the air, triggering internal motion senors which report their data back to the game being played.

Well the Nintendo Wii was a revolution in interactive virtualisation, and the concept paved the way for later, far superior systems such as the Playstation Move (the same idea as the Wii but more sensitive and accurate) and even better still the Microsoft Xbox Kinect, which utilises a depth-sensor camera to track your motion, without the need for holding any type of controller at all... if you jump or kick, your on-screen character jumps and kicks, it’s quite sensational.

Now, enter the next phase of research, one where your shadow can interact with projected images, and the touch-screen glass projected holograms from science fiction movies are a reality. Today’s column is not so much a web review, but an insight into interactive virtualisation with a couple of amazing videos that you can watch ON the web. Check them out!

Sunshine Coast Council has released route options for an innovative Greenlink corridor between the future Palmview development and Kawana and is seeking public comment.

Palmview is a Greenfield development site to the west of the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital, which will house up to 18,000 residents in the future. It will be important in providing future affordable housing for key workers at the hospital.

The Greenlink is a planned public transport, active transport and emergency vehicle corridor to provide quick access between the future Palmview and Kawana town centres and new Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

A feasibility study has been underway since mid 2011 to determine if there is a suitable corridor for the Greenlink between these emerging residential and commercial hubs.

Council’s Director of Integrated Transport Planning Graeme Krisanski said the team now has a thorough understanding of the technical constraints of the study area and is looking to gather information from the community about the social constraints that need to be taken into consideration when assessing the options.

“We know a great deal about flooding, ground conditions and the environment in the area, but we also want to ensure that we hear from residents about any additional key issues of concern to them,” Mr Krisanski said.

“We encourage people to view the options map, ask questions about what is being proposed and give their feedback.

“Information provided by the community will be considered in conjunction with the technical information when assessing the feasibility of corridor options.”

The Palmview to Kawana Greenlink has the potential to play a significant role in both the local and regional transport networks.

From a local perspective, the Palmview to Kawana Greenlink would provide the opportunity for people to live in Palmview and commute by bus or bicycle to employment at Kawana and vice versa.

From a regional perspective, the Palmview to Kawana Greenlink would provide an important link in the transport network between the education and industry hubs of the University of the Sunshine Coast and the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital precinct, as well as the future Kawana town centre transport interchange.

This was followed by discussion on our next volume of collected works and a group compiling a collection of children’s stories.

Julie gave an excellent talk about e-books, with an overview of the production process and clearly explaining the traps for new players. John spoke about preparing various forms of a synopsis.

Bob read his article on ‘Courtship’ from Adam and Eve to the present day. Steve presented a verse in recognition of a 60th wedding anniversary.

Providing opportunities for writers to present their work and receive feedback, meetings take place at Beerwah Library on the second and fourth Friday of each month. Next meeting is on Friday, November 11.

Whether you are a writer, or just interested in writing, you will find a friendly welcome in this group whose members range from beginners to accomplished, published authors.

Refreshments are provided for a small donation. Guests and visitors welcomed.

Stone Fish sting in local swimming hole

In Mooloolah Valley / Diamond Valley there is a small swimming hole where a lot of locals like to take their pets, children and themselves swimming. Today we took our two dogs down for a swim and I decided to jump in myself. I was walking into the water when I stepped on something sharp. It felt like a broken bottle and I felt it pierce my skin. I wadded out of the water and saw the bottom of my foot was bleeding, I thought it was a simple cut. I washed it out with fresh water and a few minutes later a severe pain started shooting through my foot. I wrapped my foot up in my singlet to stop the bleeding, after we got home a few minutes later the pain started shooting up my leg and became excruciating. I decided to go to the emergency room, my partner drove me there. I arrived at the emergency room 30 minutes later and the pain had run all the way up my leg. It just seemed to be getting worse.

I would like to send a bouquet and a big thank you to a lovely young couple who found and returned my purse. They so urgently sourced my address and returned my purse straight to my home, within minutes of losing it, I didn't get their names. When reading this they will know who I am referring to. My purse contained licenses, credit cards, Blue cards, appointment cards, and money, to name just a few important items. This kind, selfless and responsible act saved me from making numerous phone calls to banks, Qld Transport and many other departments, not to mention the stress and inconvenience it would have caused. I believe in kindness to others and your kind act will return to you tenfold. A huge thanks.

Peachester Range Road

As ‘The Poddydodger’ correctly points out in his latest Letter to the Editor regarding Peachester Range Road I have been unable to advise start and finish times for the reconstruction of this road - but this is not for a lack of trying.

I have written to the Minister on several occasions this year demanding that this road be fixed 22

what exactly had happened but after looking at my foot and judging by the symptoms and the severity of the swelling they told me I was stung by a Freshwater stone fish also known as a BullRout fish. They treated it mainly with hot water and pain killers.

But this is more of a warning for swimmers on the sunshine coast. This swimming hole has a fresh spring and running water and it is surprising to find stone fish in such a small swimming hole.

Please everyone be careful and if these symptoms happen to you get to the emergency room and get it treated; I’d never wish that pain on anyone.

Bushrangers hold up Cobb and Co coach Shortly after Cobb and Co began a coach service between Brisbane and the Gympie goldfields in 1868, a coach was held up and its passengers robbed.

On January 6, 1869 the coach had started at 6.30am from Foo’s Hotel in Gympie with seven passengers. One of the passengers was W Selwyn King, late manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Kilkivan. The Kilkivan branch had closed and Mr King was on his way to Sydney. He carried bank notes to the value of two thousand pounds, and a revolver.

About five miles from Gympie, two masked and armed men leapt out from behind an ironbark tree and ordered the driver to stop. Mr King fired at one of the bushrangers but the second man covered King with a double-barrelled gun.

The bushrangers ordered the passengers to get out of the coach. The quick-thinking bank manager slid his revolver back into its holster and pulled his shirt-tails out of his trousers to conceal it, as he descended from the coach.

The robbers told the passengers to remove their coats and waistcoats and throw their money, watches and other valuables on the ground.

They did so, but King also stripped off his shirt and used it to cover his revolver lying on the ground. During a distraction caused by another passenger, King stooped down, grabbed his firearm and fired three shots at the robbers.

At least one of these found its mark but King’s final shot failed to explode. As he had no more ammunition, he bolted for the scrub, still in possession of the two thousand pounds.

The bushrangers cursed him but, ignorant of that two thousand pounds, turned back to the other passengers and collected their loot - 24 pounds plus some watches. They galloped back towards Gympie while King made his way to the Seven-Mile shanty, where the coach was waiting.

Later a man named William Bond was arrested, tried and found guilty. He was sentenced to imprisonment for 20 years, and to be twice whipped during the first six months of his sentence, each whipping to be of 25 lashes.

Council will undertake work to construct a 1.8 metre wide concrete pathway along Karanne Drive, Mooloolah Valley. This will provide a formalised and all weather walkway for the residents of Karanne Drive. The project was programed to commence the week beginning October 31 and completion anticipated within two weeks (weather permitting).

During construction, property access may be affected for short durations.

Council officers will contact residents, where relevant, to discuss timing for access or parking if work is likely to block entrances. Your patience during construction is appreciated. Traffic management measures will be in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.

Council investigates need for marine zones Council will launch an online survey that will investigate the need for marine zones in the Maroochy, Mooloolah and Pumicestone estuaries. A marine zone is a designated area where certain activities or vessels are managed to protect the health of the waterway and ensure the enjoyment and diversity of water-based recreational users. After years of uncertainty, the Big Pineapple is finally in the hands of new, enthusiastic owners and set for a gradual return to its former glory.

I met with the new Manager, Paul Ziebarth a fortnight ago who took me on a personal tour of what's been an iconic part of my life, growing up on the Sunshine Coast.

The last time I visited the Big Pineapple was three years ago and I remember walking up through the landmark pineapple that smelt like an old, rotted out caravan. It was nice to see work had begun on fixing the leaks and the exterior getting a blast with high pressure water to remove the thick moss off the paint work. Surprisingly enough, the outside really doesn't need a paint, but the new owners have committed to restoring the establishment without short cuts.

Once the exterior is complete, work will begin on restoring the dioramas that showcase the history of the pineapple industry and Golden Circle. Because of its Heritage listing, nothing can be changed on the inside or outside of the structure, only restored. I've also been assured it will more likely smell like a new car once complete.

The Saturday morning 'fresh produce' markets made a return over the weekend to the Big Pineapple carpark and management have assured stall holders that it will remain exclusively fresh produce from across the Sunshine Coast region. Check them out from 6.30am – 12.30pm each week.

The weekend also saw the unveiling of a new coffee shop where the former ticketing booth was located at the entry to the attraction. Paul made it very clear that there will never be another admission fee on the Big Pineapple while the current owners have any say in it. The cafe is part of stage one in the rebirth of the reopening and renovations.

Attractions including the train, ever popular parfaits, animal sanctuary, restaurants, indoor concert facility and more are set for gradual completion over the next few years. The four acres of pineapples that were synonymous with the attraction will also need to be replanted and talks with local growers will continue over what varieties the Big Pineapple will grow.

It's no overnight fix, but the vision the new owners and management share is something we as locals will be able to showcase in the future to friends and family who next visit the Sunshine Coast.

“Diabetes is growing at an epidemic rate, with more than 60 Queenslanders diagnosed every day with type 2 diabetes. Already more than 300,000 Queenslanders have the condition and the total number of Australians with diabetes and pre-diabetes is estimated at 3.2 million,” Ms Trute said.

The upcoming seventh night of the Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club will be held next Thursday, November 10 from 7.00pm at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, The last “club” night was a super one for us. It was probably because the Sports Club advertised our session in the local paper - the Glasshouse Country News. If so a big thank you to them as we saw a lot of new people. There were 4 acts in particular that lifted the bar - a new duo featuring Michael and Sheree Buchow, singer/guitarist/song writer Ian Williams, and singer/guitarists Peter Partridge and Paul McKenna.

Apparently Sheree Buchow has only been singing a few months. If so watch out as she has an impressive voice, and her partner Michael is a talented electric guitarist. They were one of two acts that used backing tracks on the night to fill out their sound. Paul McKenna, who was the last act of the evening, has one of those voices you notice - whether singing Roy Orbison, Elvis, Daddy Cool, Johnny Cash or Neil Diamond, you simply listen and ask for more.

Peter Partridge joined his partner Rose Palmer and others on stage in a number of country songs and showed what an accomplished accompanist he is. A special find for me was song writer Ian Williams. I haven’t heard his work before as I am new to the region, but I am assured he receives lots of local airplay. Ian gave us an all original set with thoughtful words, impressive finger style guitar work and a fine singing voice. I for one enjoyed each song and am keen to hear more. Other performers on the night, all of whom have appeared before at the Club, included Leanne Zadkovitch, Paul Fagan, Mick Shipley and Frank and Pam Moroney.

Yes, we’re still walking and would love you to join us. This group has now been walking for about six years and for some of us that’s well over 3000km covered. Perspective is important. Just ask the patient that is kept inside hospital doors, feeling isolated from the rest of the world. The world must look awfully different when all you are looking at is four sterile walls and a cold floor. The couple locked inside the walls of a marriage falling apart can see things very differently to how they once did when they first fell in love. And it can be really, really difficult to see a future full of hope when financial failures and pressures can make you feel helpless and hopeless.

It can be so easy to get caught up in our little world, that sometimes we lose track of ourselves, our relationships with others, and even the big picture of life itself! But we must keep things in perspective, because if we don’t, we can start seeing life with an ant’s eye view of things - with our nose to the ground - when a bird’s eye view can offer so much perspective.

Recently I watched a show on TV about the US Coast Guard. The skipper on board operated a computer gadget that allowed him to see with a satellite’s eye view to help navigate the ship. With that gadget, the ship was able to nose its way through thick ice by knowing where ice was the thinnest as it went around the planet. The Bible is like that gadget! Designed by God to help us navigate through the waves and winds of life.

The promises in the Bible show us a different perspective - God’s view! We see the beginning but He sees the beginning and the end. You can find one of those promises in Jeremiah chapter 29 and

The pages of the Bible reveal a Father who loves us, who cares about the things that we care about, and who provides for us. God’s will for us is good; it’s what we would want for ourselves if we could only see the bigger picture! Shifting our perspective will reveal new opportunities that God has placed all around us. If we want to escape the issues of life that keep us in a box, we have to trust God and ask Him to help us see things from a new perspective.

Blood, Sweat and Cheers Wednesday’s numbers were down due to a number of our members playing away, but a couple of social games were played with Chris Freshwater’s triples team beating John McSwain’s team and Di Hunt’s pairs team beating Margaret Lehmann’s.

Thursday morning’s game of ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Bob Coxon and Kerry Capern with two wins and a margin of +17. The runners-up, being the Winners of the Losers, with the highest margin of +14 in Game two, were Ernie Sherwood and Robbie Dean. The afternoon game was won

Mooloolah’s sporting brothers bowl ‘em over The hinterland’s impressive scorecard has just gotten better, with another addition to the region’s growing list of sporting legends. Eleven-year-old twins Sebastien and Alastair Smith, of Mooloolah, were last weekend selected for the under 12 Sunshine Coast representative team, to play in the Ian Healy Cup in Brisbane early in the new year.

At only 11 years of age, it’s hard to believe that the boys have already been playing cricket for the past five or six years, but one look at their form on the cricket pitch is enough to bowl anyone over.

While both boys now play for Palmwoods, previously they were members of the Landsborough Loggers.

The mad keen sportsters are also passionate AFL players, and have represented their school numerous times for district athletics. They train hard and they play hard and sure are well prepared to hit the big time.

Dad Matt said both boys are really excited about their first time selection for the Sunny Coast, after only narrowly missing out last year.

Hurdling towards Olympic glory at St Lucia, Brisbane, one of only two students from Beerwah High. Rhonda will then follow that up with the junior Australian championships in Sydney in March.

But for one so young, this former Elimbah State School student has her feet planted firmly on the ground. The dedicated and committed athlete trains three days a week with coach Don Harrison at the University of the Sunshine Coast, as well as following her own fitness regime, and participating in the school’s athletics extension program.

“I’m pretty excited, but I just want to do my best, and continue to work on my technique,” she said.

Looks like she is on the right track!

When Beerwah State High student Rhonda Byrnes was just three years of age, she already had an Olympic gold medal in her sights.

Now, 11 years later, it seems she is well on her way. The 14-year-old hurdler was recently announced the most outstanding athlete and the junior sportswoman of the year at Beerwah State High’s annual awards night. Next month she’s off to the national schools championships www.gcnews.com.au

Lessons for Beginners to Advanced

BMX racer on fast track to success She may have only been racing for the past 18 months, but 17-year-old Mooloolah local Tamika Fisher is on the fast track for success.

In September, Tamika, a member of the Hinterland BMX club, competed in her first state titles, and proudly took out third place in the State BMX titles for her age group. This has capped off a fantastic start for Tamika, who was named the club’s most female rider for 2010.

But how does a former flatwater kayaker find her feet on a bike?

“I just wanted a change,” Tamika said.

“We would drive past the track on the way to school and I thought I would like to give it a go and now, I just always want to ride,” she said.

A beginner compared to other girls her age, Tamika’s now got her sights set on the World Championships in the near future, after she heads down to the BMX National Championships in Victoria next year.

“It’s the adrenaline you get as you come out of the start gate, the feeling you get when you learn a new manoeuvre and the feeling you get when you land a jump.

“The largest distance I have jumped is six metres, but I want to jump bigger.”

It certainly looks like a big future for this Mooloolah racer.

Join the local energy conservation community

Residents from across the Sunshine Coast are now able to register to be part of the Sunshine Coast Energy Conservation Community (ECC).

Since it was launched last year, around 1,300 homes and businesses in Mooloolaba, Sippy Downs and Mountain Creek have already enrolled in the Sunshine Coast ECC, which has prompted Energex to expand the program across the entire region.

The Sunshine Coast ECC is an initiative of the Bligh Government, Energex and the Sunshine Coast Council.

The aim of the program is to encourage residents to actively reduce their energy consumption at peak times when the network is under increased pressure - typically between 4.00pm and 8.00pm daily and hot summer days.

Eligible ECC participants are offered a range of incentives valued at up to $600.00 to assist them in being more energy efficient and reducing electricity consumption during peak periods.

In addition, for every household that signs up, a $50.00 donation is made to the PowerPact community partnership fund which provides financial assistance to local community groups and schools.
