Hi Everyone...

Back in the April 18 edition we featured a story about a development application for a new low density housing development at Landsborough. Since then we have had numerous letters, phone calls and people dropping in to the office to share their personal perspective as well as a response in last week’s ‘You Said it Page’ by the Councillor talking in general terms about this type of development.

The flow of unhappy locals has continued this week, so we have taken a look at the bigger picture and what might be able to happen if there is enough groundswell about the issue.

The story is longer than those we usually include, but hopefully it provides food for thought on an important community issue.

We have also included a Mother’s Day feature, encouraging everyone to remember to make sure you say ‘Thanks, mum’ for being you, and maybe even go out to buy mum something that she would like, or even more importantly, how about just spending some time together?

Cover Story Body rocking design gets wild

By Sonia Clark Local lass Cassie Pearce recently turned her creative flair towards “living artwork” by entering a gorgeous original design in last month’s Australian Body Art Festival.

Her eye-catching creation was inspired by this year’s festival theme of ‘Wild Things’ and marks Cassie’s first ever entry into a body art competition.

Cassie, who works at Posy and Co at Landsborough, has been interested in body art for some time and says she was keen to take that interest to the next level. Entering the face-painting category in the Sunshine Coast competition was a wonderful way to creatively challenge herself.

“I have always loved body art and was obsessed with Cirque du Soleil and the amazing costume make up when I was younger but it wasn't until I was at a family birthday party that had a face painter that I thought I should give it a go,” said Cassie.

Entering the competition was the perfect way for Cassie to launch herself as a face painter and she also found being around all the other artists incredibly inspiring.

For her first entry, Cassie chose to create a mostly green design inspired by Australian rainforests and the creatures that live within them – with splashes of colour to showcase her signature bold, bright style.

Local News Who is the planning scheme working for?

By Greg Brown When the Sunshine Coast Council started the mammoth job of pulling together a unified planning scheme from the three original local governments (Noosa, Maroochy and Caloundra), they called the process “Our Place Our Future”.

The Mayor at the time – Bob Abbott – said at the time that the planning scheme will in a large part determine the look, feel and identity of the Sunshine Coast of the future.

Over a five year period – which included the deamalgamation of Noosa Shire and the election of a new mayor – the new planning scheme was formulated, consulted, reviewed and finally approved in 2014.

Mayor Jamieson, business leaders and others heralded the plan as a way forward to provide "consistency" and “certainty” for development and communities across the Coast.

Follow the rules and all is OK The concept is that the planning rules are set, everyone knows what they are and by following the rules, towns and communities can grow and develop in a structured and accepted manner.

The ‘rules’ are the planning objectives, outcomes and codes set out in the planning scheme. If a development is generally consistent with the planning scheme goals, then it can be classed as “code assessable”, broadly meaning that it complies with the relevant development standards in the identified applicable codes (or ‘rules’). It will then be assessed and approved by Council.

If it doesn’t exactly comply with the rules, Council has the flexibility allow the development anyway and – if it sees fit – may impose some conditions to resolve any conflicts.

Under State law, code assessable applications require no formal public notification or submission process. If locals aren’t happy and send their thoughts to Council as a ‘submission’, there is no requirement for Council to take formal notice of them. There is no requirement to make them available on the development application webportal (www.pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au), so nobody knows what concerns others may be raising.

If the development is considered way outside of what the planning scheme allows, the proposed development can be designated as “impact assessable”. Here, the proposed development has to prove that it does not impact upon the local area and the strategic goals that Council have set out.

In these cases, State laws give locals a say through an open and transparent public notification and submissions process. This doesn’t mean that Council won’t approve the development anyway.

Almost within the rules, but…

The recent proposal for the large multi-dwelling development the corner of Maleny Street and Gympie Street North in Landsborough has created a considerable amount of community concern.

The simple fact is that the land is zoned for such a use – Multi-Dwelling Residential. And the assessment codes set out the what, where, how and why of what is allowable.

Much of the centre of Landsborough, as well as most other of our larger hinterland townships, has areas of similarly zoned land. This isn’t new and has been transparently visible as part of the planning scheme from the beginning.

But what seems to be galling most people is that, upon reflection, the maximum allowable changes under the planning rules may not sit well with the established character and feel of the locality.

Kylie Norgrove expresses her frustration in the letters page, which is most likely shared by many others.

“It is incredible to think that it was only recently that the Sunshine Coast Council came to Landsborough on what was called a ‘place making’ initiative to talk to us about our town centre,” she writes.

“How this can be seen as being in keeping with a ‘village-like’ environment?

“If this proceeds as currently envisaged then it should be very clear that Council has chosen to ignore locals and instead favour the personal enrichment of out-of-town developers/owners.”

The company making the application sees nothing wrong with the scale of what they propose: the possibility of having up to 96 people living on less than one hectare of land. They see nothing wrong with the intensity of the development and bending the rules a little in the process.

These rules – or codes – are, as James from Maleny correctly points out in the letters page, creations of Council. And Council is there to reflect the will of the communities which they serve.

“Instead of explanations,” writes James, “residents would be better represented by councillors recognising that residents are unfairly disadvantaged by their current exclusion from the process, and make the changes required to include the provisions necessary to ensure the impact of Code Assessable development on the residents’ amenity is minimised.”

The way that the development assessment process works is that Council has a great degree of flexibility to approve developments outside the planning scheme codes.

As Philippa England, Senior Law Lecturer at Griffith University wrote recently in an opinion piece for ‘The Conversation’ – an independent on-line news outlet – with so much flexibility in the system, why bother writing codes at all?

So, it may be prudent to ask… if the planning scheme is there to protect local communities from undesirable development; and if the community desires the status quo to be changed; and if the Councillors represent the communities; and if those Councillors are responsible for approving the

content of the rules and codes for development… then why can’t those same Councillors push for amendments if locals disagree with the direction that development is taking them?

Bottom line is that they can. The planning scheme is – as Council likes to remind us – a living document, and amendments are continually being made.

The problem is it takes a collective voice to be heard and recognised. John Weeks makes this point in his letter, where he asks whether it is time to form a lobby group to make our Hinterland voices heard.

Microwave towers close to families, petrol stations next to schools, sardine housing in country towns… is this the direction we believe that living in the Hinterland should be all about?

Final bell tolls for Town Crier Since our story in last week’s GC&M News about Maleny Town Crier, John Stevenson attending this year’s Anzac Day service at the Maleny Hospital, we have been advised of his passing in the early hours of Tuesday May 1.

The 92-year-old Maleny local was born in London. At 18 he served in the British Army and was one of the World War II troops who landed at Normandy in 1945.

For John, being able to participate in the service on Anzac Day, particularly being surrounded by family, was exceptionally important.

John’s oldest son Mike explained that while the doctors had given John only days to live, he was just so determined to participate in the service, even attempting to stand up from his wheelchair for the Ode. “The service exhausted him, and a couple of hours later he lost consciousness for the last time and passed away five days later,” Mike said.

The family were just so grateful to see the big smile on John’s face during the service and to have been able to share in the day with him.

It was in the 1970s that John, his wife Betty and their family moved to Australia, with the couple making Maleny their home in the 90s.

John Kershler, who became friends with the wellknown Town Crier more than 30 years ago, said John was a real character, he loved a laugh, and was always so generous with his time and was devoted to his work in the local community in Maleny and before that in Redcliffe.

“When I first met John, I was managing a shopping centre, and he worked for me as part of the centre’s promotional activities,” John said.

“He was great with the customers, he had a lot of time for other people and he just fitted in so well, from then on we became friends.”

Sadly, John’s wife Betty passed away nine years ago, which was a big blow for John and almost made him give up his role as Town Crier. However, the enjoyment it brought him kept him doing the role until early last year, where at that time he was officially recognised as Australia’s oldest Town Crier.

John’s family have organised his funeral service which will be held at the Maleny RSL Hall this Friday, May 11 at 1pm. The family say that the community are most welcome to attend.

Federal funding for Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade The Federal Government is committing $390 million which is 50% of the cost required to duplicate Queensland’s North Coast Rail Line between Beerburrum and Landsborough, and build capacity upgrades from Landsborough to Nambour.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack, who was in Landsborough last Thursday to make the announcement, said the Federal Government was committed to providing the rail infrastructure Queenslanders need to enjoy the fast and reliable train services they deserve.

“Reduced travel times and greater trip reliability makes rail a more attractive option for travellers between the region and Brisbane in particular, while more parking at stations will also add to the equation,” Mr McCormack said.

Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher said this upgrade, which would duplicate about 20km and upgrade a further 19km of track along the busy commuter corridor, is big news for the Sunshine Coast and surrounding regions.

“This project makes good sense in itself – as it will relieve pressure on the busy Bruce Highway and provide commuters with additional train services,” Mr Fletcher said.

“It also offers a potential launch pad for further work to deliver a faster rail service along this route in the future, depending on the outcome from the business case which is now under way.

That business case will take as its starting point the upgraded Beerburrum to Nambour line – the subject of today’s funding announcement – and will examine potential further investments which would allow a faster rail service to be delivered between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane.”

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said the project would provide a range of upgrades between Landsborough and Nambour including passing loops extensions and additional parking at some stations. “Through this major investment, we will address conflict between passenger and freight trains on the current single-track line, which is constraining the growth of both types of traffic,” Mr Wallace said.

“This will also be a significant economic boost to the region, creating more than 600 jobs and driving even more investment into the local economy.”

Business News Beerwah’s tourism accommodation expands Twelve months ago Cherine Mathews-Lawer and her husband Steven bought a property in Beerwah that had been operated as an Air BnB property.

The realised that there was limited accommodation for tourists in the township and that their rainforest block was a perfect location to expand the type of accommodation available locally.

They decided to incorporate a custom built, recycled rustic cabin with a ‘luxe theme’ on their property.

Following the offical business Tracie Sanim from Splash Marketing and PR took over the reigns and introduced the Round Table Series.

Small and middle-sized businesses often struggle to find the time and the necessary know-how to take advantage of the different social media platforms, or to learn how to access Government funding (various grants), or to upgrade and improve website content, to navigate the complex world of tax compliance and the list goes on. This is exactly what the Round Table Series is all about.

Tracie Sanim has a wealth of knowledge which she is willing to share with our members about digital marketing, about how to deal with Council or Government to access funding, website design and integration with SEO/Google AdWords, etc.

From our June meeting onwards, we will set aside about 30 minutes after the Agenda Items to take up one topic, preferably a topic that you have raised. If the topic is outside of our knowledge base, the Chamber will organise a presenter at a later meeting to address the issue.

We always welcome guests. Cr Rick Baberowski said at the meeting that the businesses in the Hinterland towns have a real chance to step up and become relevant, to be different to businesses within large shopping complexes. It is easier for us to connect with the population on a more personal level and maintain the village identity and uniqueness. There will be a lot of competition, especially when the shopping centre at Aura opens, but at the same time this offers a unique opportunity for us all to be more proactive and move with the times. It is not enough to stand behind the counter and wait for people to notice you. That time has truly passed.

Community News Speed zones change on Maleny roads

Maleny petrol station plans fail The development application for a petrol station opposite Maleny State School has fallen through.

Sunshine Coast Council informed the applicant – Synergy Property Partners – on March 29 that if the application fee of $17,495 was not received within 20 business days, the application will be deemed to have not been received.

The May 1 deadline came and went without payment.

According to Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay, that is the end of that application.

Sunshine Coast Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay last week announced that the speed limit on McCarthy Road at Maleny and Witta Road at Witta would be changing.

“Members of the Speed Management Committee discussed and agreed that the existing speed limit of 80km/h be reduced to 60km/h on McCarthy Road, Maleny, and Witta Road, Witta,” she said.

It was agreed that a posted speed limit of 60km/h be introduced on McCarthy Road, Maleny between Bunya Street and the intersection of Mountain View Road and also introduced on Witta Road between Maleny-Kenilworth Road and the intersection of Cooke Road.

The Queensland Police Service will be undertaking regular enforcement of the 60km/h speed limit on both roads.

The Speed Management Committee is a body made up of representatives from groups including the Council, Department of Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Police Service and other relevant stakeholders.

“As a result, the application is now taken to have not been made, and the applicant has been advised of such. If the applicant wishes to proceed with an application, they will need to re-apply.”

The application saw a considerable reaction from Maleny locals, who expressed their fears about the health impacts on the school children, issues relating to fast food availability opposite a school and concerns with traffic movements around the site. Synergy Property Partners were approached for comments.

The Landsborough Scouts Group is putting the call out for some enthusiastic locals who might be able to give up a couple of hours of their time to help out with their working bee on this Saturday May 12.

The group is really pleased to have received donations from Bunnings of paint brushes and supplies as well as a generous donation of paint from Taubmans.

However, what they are really in need of is a painter or two who are happy to help out. They would really love some locals who have strong hands and a willing attitude to give them a hand.

The working bee will take place at their Rocky Creek Camp which is located at 3246 Old Gympie Road, Beerwah.

Community Hub launched in Glass House

A new community social group and shared space, the ‘Community Hub’, was launched last week at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre with great success.

The hall was a scene from the good old days, The first borrower, Kamali with people chatting over pots of tea around Masters, of the Community homely table settings, having some laughs and enjoying connecting with others in their Hub’s book swap and mini community. library Hinterland Community Development Worker Natasha Odgers said: “Many of the men and women who came met one another for the first time and found they shared many similar interests.

“Ideas for what the group would like to do initially included: outings to places some are yet to visit, learning new skills, such as first aid and woodwork, having speakers on travel experiences, show and tell personal story sessions and more.”

There was also a common interest found for starting a walking group. Initially the group will meet at the Neighbourhood Centre at 7.30am Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. All are encouraged to join in.

The new space dedicated to the Community Hub at the Neighbourhood Centre is to attract people to play music, swap or borrow books, have a cuppa and most importantly, connect with others.

The Community Hub group will meet weekly, every Tuesday from 9.30am11.30am.

Every fortnight the group will meet at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, and alternative Tuesdays will be outings.

Tuesday May 15 will be a show and tell session at the Neighbourhood Centre.

All are encouraged to bring an item of importance to them to share over coffee and cake. These sessions are free to attend.

No matter your age, interests, background or gender, everyone is encouraged to come along.

Thank you Cr Rick Baberowski for your response on the Landsborough development in GC&M News, May 2 edition, however the things you said have raised more concerns than provided answers for me.

If you share our passion and concerns then you need to prove that by acting on our behalf, as that is why we voted you in.

As a Councillor you are constrained? Aren’t you part of the Council who voted in the rules which allow this development to happen?

You don’t want to pre-judge a ‘live’ development application, an application that no one even knew about until it was reported in the paper.

Now that people are speaking up about it, we expect you to represent our views.

Being ‘code assessable’, it means that you’re not part of the decision making process, so why can’t you officially represent our views?

Code assessable is a cost cutting measure, as Council has less involvement and it gives developers clear pathways to do what they want without ratepayer involvement.

‘Other agencies’ will be involved… but not Landsborough residents.

Development staff can consider the town’s character as set out in the Landsborough Local Area Plan – again locals have others making decisions for us, about us, but not with us.

It’s the State Government’s fault – but we elected you to represent us in local government, not state development.

Stretch the capacity of our officers... you would have us believe Council is big business – well act like it, can’t you employ or contract enough staff to complete the workload?

The planning scheme is our planning scheme.

Now Council wants us to suffer the results of their short sighted financial futurism.

Please show your determination to adequately represent us and commit to helping us halt this style of development; and I call on other concerned locals to contact Cr Baberowski and let him know what you think of the development and his unsatisfactory response.

Re: New development in Landsborough

It is incredible to think that it was only recently that the Sunshine Coast Council came to Landsborough on what was called a ‘place making’ initiative to talk to us about our town centre – where I heard first hand responses calling out (1) how the ‘village-like’ nature of the town is a significant part of its appeal and (2) the shared desire to see this kept in mind for future planning.

And then we read in GC&M News on April 18 that Council is considering a 63 bedroom housing facility, on a prominent site, with inadequate parking, that is completely out of step with its surrounds.

How this can be seen as being in keeping with a ‘village-like’ environment? And yet the author of the Council’s Code Assessment document somehow believes the development will “make a positive contribution to the character of the street and local area”.

I find it bewildering that a property on this scale, in this area, containing single bedroom accommodation with shared communal kitchens/living areas, can be regarded as residential. Even if it did meet the letter of zoning regulations, it certainly does not pass a reasonable person's 'sanity check’.

If this proceeds as currently envisaged then it should be very clear that Council has chosen 18

to ignore locals and instead favour the personal enrichment of out-of-town developers/owners.

That said, it will only be clear if people speak up.

If the development gets the green light then the precedent will be set, and in all likelihood our town will have more and more properties like this get built.

The answer to these questions, unless I’m mistaken, is… the Sunshine Coast Council.

Instead of explanations, residents would be better represented by councillors recognising that residents are unfairly disadvantaged by their current exclusion from the process, and making the changes required to include the provisions necessary to ensure the impact of Code Assessable development on the residents' amenity is minimised.

Balance, what balance?

Re: Proposed Landsborough development

For some time, I have protested against the abuse by developers in lodging applications to Council where proposed residential density exceeds those detailed in the Town Plan for areas designated as medium density residential in Beerwah.

Over the time I have learned a number of interesting things relating to the term ‘medium density’. One town planner explained that the problem is that no specification was made of the area designated to apply to the lot on which ‘medium density’ housing could be built, but the rule of thumb would be “between 30 to 50 residences per hectare” which is rather vague.

I was also informed by another town planner that different localities within Council area must have different ‘medium density’ areas specified, i.e, lot size in medium density zones in coastal suburbs should be of different size in area to that specified for a hinterland town.

No one can give me a satisfactory reason why applicants for medium density housing can apply for a density higher than that stated in the regulations and have this approved by Council. One reason was that they need to maintain a balance.

A balance of what I wonder?

I have been told that it will be a long and hard fight and as individuals we have little chance of success, as we will simply be ignored. To have any chance of success in changing the current system we would need to form a lobby group preferably with some social/political highfliers that could carry a bit more weight and maintain pressure on those who can make the necessary changes.

One question I would really like answered is, just how many medium density dwellings in excess of the rate of 50 per hectare have been approved throughout the shire since the current Town Plan came into effect?

Council responsible for building codes

Thanks to Councillor Baberowski for endeavouring to explain the circumstances surrounding the approval of Code Assessable Development/Building Applications in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News May 2 edition.

The fact remains that under ‘Code Assessable’ developments, Queensland Law (Right to Information Act 2009) protects the Council and the developer from having to advise residents of developments and totally excludes residents from the process regardless of the impact on their amenity.

The claim that the Council’s powers are somewhat limited when it comes to Code Assessable developments (the Code is written assuming all developments are the same regardless of the impact on residents and their surrounds) raises the following questions: 1. Who is responsible for setting the minimum requirements and the administration of Code Assessable developments?

2. Who is responsible to ensure there are oversight

I have been reading letters to the editor in recent weeks with views put forward denouncing the proposed development application for units to be built in Landsborough.

Given that Cr Rick Baberowski has felt that the issue carried enough weight that it warranted him writing a letter himself spelling out council’s position on the subject, I felt compelled to write a letter myself offering a different take on the topic.

For I am of the belief that developments such as is proposed are very much needed in our local area so as to offer different housing options for people on all types of income levels, a position backed up by the Regional Australia Institute just recently. To argue that we should only have houses on large blocks of land is a view which has led to the total under-utilisation of the biggest asset that we have, being the rail line. It is little wonder that we have been waiting so long for the rail duplication.

The fact that there will be limited parking on site isn't a bad thing either, as people living so close the train station won't need a car.

This in turn saves pollution, as well as lives, given that the Sunshine Coast has terrible statistics regarding car crashes, not to mention the heartache and trauma that follows such horrific events. While nostalgia for the past is not to be discredited, the fact of the matter is that SEQ is one of the fastest growing parts of Australia and not taking advantage of public assets and centralising growth around them is surely not only foolish but also selfish.

These are the words that many people associate with memories of the friendly Avon representative calling around with her catalogue in hand to share with her customers.

Over my 25 or more years of ‘Avoning’ I have had so many wonderful customers, I have had many, many cups of teas, I’ve changed light bulbs, and even brought in people’s bins while delivering their orders.

Perhaps those in charge should ponder whether the old image might help instil a corporate philosophy of providence or protective care and integrity.

Disgraceful ad

For those of you who watch television and have to put up with the advertisements, then think about the Suncorp advertisement where they have a young girl spotting a $20 note on the ground and allow her to pick it up and place it in her purse.

That is okay, however, they then teach her how to invest that found money. With me so far? Good idea? Wrong, it is now ‘Steal by Finding’ and that little girl is taught to be a criminal.

Some bright Queensland police officer should deal

with this matter, otherwise there is also a charge of ‘Aid and Abet’ in there.

I cannot understand how a company such as Suncorp is allowed to make such a commercial, but to be allowed to air it on TV and to teach children how to become criminals is beyond me.

Pot holes

How much longer do we have to endure the pot holes and uneven road surface at the Steve Irwin Way, Roys Road intersection?

Recently while waiting at the traffic lights I saw a motorcyclist hit one of these pot holes and I was sure I was about to witness a nasty spill. It was only the skill of the rider that prevented an accident from occurring.

The authorities would have called this another ‘motorcycle’ injury/accident with no acknowledgement that this was an accident caused by the road.

Re: Road resurfacing

I wanted to thank George Saliba for his letter published in the April 11 edition of GC&M News, it raised important issues around road maintenance.

I use these roads myself multiple times a day, so experienced first-hand the before and after results.

The resurfacing designs of Old Gympie Road and Lindeman Road are consistent with standard practice for the rural road network and represent a safe, economical surfacing option for roads with this level of traffic.

Safety is council’s number one priority and these roads were resurfaced to waterproof the underlying

gravel pavement and protect it from moisture entering which can lead to potholes and pavement failures.

This is required when the older existing bitumen sealed surface deteriorates over time and breaks up.

Council’s senior works engineers inspected the road on Tuesday April 17 and determined that the level of loose aggregate present on either of these roads is consistent with the bitumen chip sealing process where some loose stones are present initially but settle down to form a uniform mat.

The size of the aggregate used on these roads has a low risk of damage to vehicles during the construction period and immediately after resurfacing has occurred.

Since resurfacing these roads, council’s contractor has swept the road surface to remove any loose aggregate.

Council’s inspectors confirmed that the paint on some sections of line marking was rubbed away by the post-construction sweeping process, however it has not impeded the safety or effectiveness of the line marking.

Line marking is placed immediately after resurfacing works in the interest of public safety and while there may be some loose stone and further sweeping required, a minor portion of the line marking could be affected. The line marking paint will be reapplied in approximately six months as part of council’s ongoing road network maintenance.

I encourage residents to report any safety hazards or concerns immediately by calling 5475 7272.

Council crews are available 24 hours a day to help rectify issues and carry out ongoing improvements.

Students from Prep to Year 6 cheered each other on as they ran laps of our beautiful school grounds and gained points for their sports houses, Stanley and Coochin. Our 10, 11 and 12 year olds also raced competitively for the opportunity to attend the Glasshouse District Cross Country just a few days later. Congratulations goes to the age champions: 10 Years – Iyla and Daniel, 11 Years – Emma and Sam, and 12 Years – Montana.

Along with the age champions, our students Hayden, Beau, Addison, Archie and Ethan represented Peachester at the District Cross Country Carnival. Emma, Sam and Daniel did our school proud by running their way right

through to the Regional Carnival. We would like to congratulate their effort and look forward to wishing them luck at Regionals next month.

Outstanding leadership recognised The Year 6 students at The River School have spent the beginning of their final year at Primary School unpacking the meaning of leadership.

They have identified the qualities of a leader and the different ways that leadership can be shown, especially through service to others. Each child has made a commitment to take on at least one leadership role within the school.

In recognition and celebration of the positive way the whole class has embraced the responsibilities of being our senior class at The River School, the students were each presented with a special ‘Red Cedar Leader 2018’ shirt. These shirts are being worn with pride by each of the students and identify them as our school leaders both at school and also when we are out at public events.

Promoting Healthy Food Choices Last Wednesday the team at Glass House Early Education Centre welcomed a visit from the Healthy Cooking Company’s nutritionist Jacqueline New. An accredited practicing dietitian, Jacqueline has been visiting Queensland Childcare Services Centres in the region to present a fun and informative workshop entitled ‘The Grain Train’ which encourages the Centres' children and their families to make healthy food choices.

Glass House Early Education Centre coordinator Ange Hardy was thrilled with the positive response to the visit which included sample tastings for the parents and an interactive fun workshop for the children in the school ready room.

Ange says that the visit is part of the Centre’s commitment to promoting better food choices and encouraging young children and their families to eat well.

The Healthy Cooking Company is the catering company that provides wholesome daily meals to the children at Glass House Early Education Centre.

Catering for all ages, the food is preservative free as well as being free from artificial colours and flavours. All meals are prepared with no added salt or refined sugar and are made without the use of nuts and eggs to ensure the safety of children who experience severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to these products.

Special dietary or cultural needs are catered for wherever possible and vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free alternatives are available.

For parents of children attending Glass House Early Education Centre - one of the best things about this catering service is that it is included as part of the daily fees!

Team members regularly discuss the importance of healthy eating and always look for educational opportunities to reinforce these values. Planting seeds and cooking activities which highlight the importance (and yummy taste!) of wholesome food are always popular and many of the school ready room learning opportunities promote positive food choices.

For example, late last year taking a ‘paddock to plate’ approach to food, the children from the school ready room were introduced to three new vegetables each week within a particular group (i.e. fruiting vegetables, leafy vegetables, root vegetables etc.) and each day they enjoyed various activities to allow them to develop new skills and experiences.

As well as being a very interactive way to learn about vegetables, the children developed practical skills – such as how to plant seeds, wash vegetables, how to safely use a knife and how to follow a recipe.

State Member for Glass House Anzac Day 2018 – Thank you for your service!

More than 300 people gathered at Kawana Waters State College on April 17 for my Sunshine Coast Casino Community Meeting. The meeting came on the very day that the Mayor admitted that he has been actively lobbying the State Government to allow a casino here. Attendees heard some shocking statistics from Dr Charles Livingstone of Monash University showing the immense harm caused by casinos and EGM gambling. We learnt that between 60% and 80% of people using Australian casinos live in the immediate local area, with only around 5% foreign tourists. We also learnt that Queenslanders lost more than $731 million in casino poker machines in 2017 alone. We also heard from retired Police Superintendent Chris Sang about the serious potential implications for policing on the Coast. We spent more than an hour on Q&A and heard many moving personal stories from attendees. At the end of the night we took a vote – as far as I could tell, everyone agreed that our community does not want a casino. I will continue to fight this proposal, and as a next step I have submitted a Right to Information request to the Council and State Government to find out more about any discussions of a casino which have been going on behind closed doors. I will report back to the community when I know more.

The Anzac Spirit is alive and well across the Glass House electorate if the numbers attending services to show their respects on Anzac Day are any indication. This year I was privileged to attend services at Mt Mee, Landsborough and Maleny and as you can see from the photo it was a full house in Maleny. It is always great to see our students involved in the services and marching alongside our veterans. It is heartening to see students wanting to be a part of the tributes and acknowledging the sacrifices those serving and those who have served have made for our freedom.

Combatting youth homelessness on the Sunshine Coast

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is hosting free workshops for supervisors of learner drivers, which will be open to the public.

The workshop is designed to help supervisors feel more confident in their role by understanding some of the key risks facing learner drivers, common mistakes/areas of failure in the practical test and arming them with advice and information to help ensure their learner is ready for the road.

I recently visited Beerwah Youth and Community centre to announce $1,025,500 in funding for IFYS Ltd, to deliver a youth homelessness service here on the Coast. The Reconnect service will help hundreds of local young people aged 12-18 and their families to access secure accommodation, stabilise their living situation, and re-engage with employment, education, or training. The services cover Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Landsborough, and Caloundra.

I encourage anyone who knows someone who is homeless or in a vulnerable housing situation to use this service and to get in touch with IFYS on the phone, through their website, or by coming along to the Youth and Community Centre in Beerwah.

Maleny Girl Guides Hut

I was delighted to be invited to be part of reopening Maleny Girl Guides’ Hut last week. I was a builder myself, and I know how much work has gone into their renovations. The extensive project, and the fund-raising behind it, have been a massive effort for a great many people in Maleny. What is truly impressive about the Hut’s transformation though is the way in which the Guides have preserved the character of an historic building. It may not be nationally famous; it may not be imposing or grand, but for anyone who knows Maleny, the Girl Guides Hut is certainly a local icon. It is great to see it looking its best once again, so well done to everyone involved!

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast Be mindful of speed limits on rural roads

Residents have contacted me recently regarding motorists speeding, and driving dangerously along Tunnel Ridge Road. The speed limit has been reduced from 70 to 60, but local residents have noticed an increase in the number of people who are not driving to the limit, or to conditions. When driving on rural roads, it is important to remember that driveways and access points to properties may not be as visible as in built up areas, but residents need to access the roads safely.

Members of the Speed Management Committee also recently discussed and agreed that the existing speed limit of 80km/h be reduced to 60km/h on McCarthy Road, Maleny.

I encourage all drivers to be aware of local speed limits, particularly in rural areas.

May’s breakfast meeting highlighted the need for residents and visitors alike to take responsibility for rubbish being thrown from travelling vehicles.

One local reported picking up enormous amounts of rubbish along the Mooloolah/Eudlo Road and has called for signs to reflect that Mooloolah is a place of pride and all should respect it by caring for the environment.

The next Mooloolah Business and Community breakfast forum will be held on Thursday June 7 at Kennys@Mooloolah from 7.30am – I would love to see you there.

Mooloolah off-leash area

After many requests, I am working with the community and council staff to provide an offleash area for Mooloolah dog owners. Mooloolah Recreation Park is a possible site, but needs careful consideration as it is also used by the neighbouring Pony Club and for recreational cricket. Council is liaising with the Pony Club to work out how an off-leash area could work when the park is being used for public events, including the MooFest and Mooloolah Rodeo.

Rural roads update

The Lower Order Unsealed Roads Upgrade Plan 2016-2026 has been adopted by council. What this means in simple terms is that residents on unsealed roads that do not carry a lot of traffic and are not ‘through roads’ can partner with council to bring a minimum seal forward by personally contributing to the costs. The 2018/19 budget will continue to support the sealing of high order rural roads. We will see the completion of the sealing of both sections of McGilchrist Road, Eudlo. I am happy to discuss this program with any residents should you wish to understand the policy further.

Health &Wellbeing BreastScreen mobile service at Maleny

The BreastScreen Queensland’s mobile service is back at Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital until May 24. Local women are encouraged to organise their two-yearly breast screen while the service is in the area.

Health Promotion Officer Kelly Hart said the service had appointments available to book now, starting as early as 7.30am.

“We understand that it can be difficult for busy women to find time to attend appointments between nine and five so we try to offer a variety of appointment times,” Ms Hart said.

“It takes less than 30 minutes to have a breast screen and women do not need a doctor’s referral to use the service.

“Regular two-yearly breast cancer screening is still the best way to find breast cancer early – well before a women or her doctor can feel anything,” she said.

Women aged 50 to 74 are particularly encouraged to have a breast screen every two years, however the service is provided free to women aged 40 years and over.

“It’s not just women who receive a letter from BreastScreen Queensland who can participate in this free screening program. Women who haven’t received a letter but who would like to make an appointment with our service can call 13 20 50 or they can book online at breastscreen.qld. gov.au,” Ms Hart said.

When the ‘tables turned’ for Krystel Krystel’s mum Karen has always been her pillar of strength, her confidant and her greatest fan. So when Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer, Krystel says it was a moment when the ‘tables turned’ and she needed to be there for her mum.

“For a lady who was the strongest woman I’ve ever met, seeing her on the lounge after her first chemotherapy was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to face,” says Krystel.

“She was so physically unwell that it broke down not only her strong motherly presence but her entire character. I was upset for her, for my sisters and for my stepfather who had absolutely no idea how to make it better.”

Diagnosed at just 48, Karen had no family history of breast cancer and her diagnosis was a shock for the entire family. Today, following treatment, she is well and enjoying life with her children and grandchildren.

“We know the treatments mum received and benefitted from are thanks to Breast Cancer Clinical Trials research,” says Krystel.

“Mum and I also know there are many other women, other mums perhaps, who need our help because better treatment options for their type of breast cancer have not yet been discovered.”

Krystel and Karen are sharing their story to support the annual Mother’s Day Research Appeal conducted by Breast Cancer Trials.

They’re encouraging people to donate to Breast Cancer Trials as their Mother’s Day gift for their mum. Supporters can choose a beautiful Mother’s Day card to give their mum which acknowledges their special gift.

“Mum says her family are her life – she loves her

children and grandchildren so much and was just glad it was her and not them dealing with this horrible disease,” says Krystel.

“It’s another example of mum’s selflessness, a trait of mothers everywhere, that she feels this way. But the reality is – it could be me, or one of my sisters, or our children one day. That’s why research is so important.”

New op shop an important step for RangeCare After more than 30 years supporting people along the Blackall Range and surrounding areas with in-home, respite and social support services, RangeCare has ventured into the world of retail and opened its first ever op shop on Wednesday, May 2.

RangeCare CEO, Jenny McCafferty, has been encouraged by the community’s support for RangeCare’s new venture, which will help raise much needed funds for the not-for-profit, community-based, local organisation.

Jenny explained that RangeCare had been looking for new fundraising opportunities for a while because the way that RangeCare receives funding from government had dramatically changed.

“We can no longer use unused funds from some of our lesser-used service categories to deliver services that are in high demand because any unused funds must now be returned to the government,” said Jenny.

“We support more than 1,200 clients, so we need to maximise our funds to be able to continue to deliver quality care and support to as many people as possible.”

The op shop is supported by a team of dedicated volunteers and is overseen by Jennie, RangeCare’s new, part-time, Op Shop Coordinator.

The op shop is located at The Old School House at 17 Obi Obi Road, Mapleton.

“Come and visit our new op shop; make a day of it because there is so much to do in Mapleton – it’s the perfect country-drive destination.”

Volunteers make a difference It’s Volunteer Week from May 21-27 and RangeCare is taking time this month to recognise the massive contribution that each of its volunteers make to both the organisation and the people living in the communities along the range.

RangeCare’s Volunteer Coordinator, Linda Bell, said that RangeCare’s team of more than 180 volunteers contributed more than 5,720 hours of service to our community in the 2016-2017 financial year.

“Our volunteers play a critical role in supporting our clients to maintain their independence and stay living in their homes longer,” said Linda.

Linda said that some of RangeCare’s volunteers work directly with clients – such as driving clients to and from medical appointments – while others provide behind-the-scenes support, such as helping with mail outs, volunteering in RangeCare’s new op shop, or participating as a Board Director or on one of RangeCare’s subcommittees.

“The support of our volunteers means that we can make best use of the funding we receive to ensure that we can deliver services to the largest number of people,” said Linda.

Linda said that as well as hosting regular coffee connect mornings for their network of volunteers, RangeCare will be hosting a special event during Volunteer Week to celebrate the amazing contribution they make within the community.

Out & About Shedding some light on Caloundra

Glasshouse Country View Club enjoyed an outing to the old Caloundra Lighthouse last week. They enjoyed exploring the two lighthouse buildings and all the local historical information stored there which was followed by a delicious morning tea at Happy Valley.

Indigenous culture celebrated With 2018 marking the 150-year anniversary of the founding of Bankfoot House by pioneers William and Mary Grigor, Sunshine Coast Council is hosting a program of special events throughout the year to celebrate this significant milestone.

The first event, held on Sunday April 29, focused on the Indigenous significance of this area through storytelling, bush tucker and children’s workshops.

The area known as Glass House Mountains has long been a special meeting place for the Kabi Kabi and Jinibara People.

The event was part of the Australian Heritage Festival event, 'My culture, my story', which included local storytelling, history and language, bush food tastings, didgeridoo and dance troupe performances, Aboriginal art display and art sessions.

Looking for Lawson

Looking for Lawson, a contemporary take on the works of classic Australian poet, Henry Lawson with music and song, will be performed at The Events Centre, Caloundra this Sunday, May 13, at 2pm. An evening of stars with Peter Watt

Acclaimed Australian author Peter Watt will talk about his latest book ‘From the Stars Above’, life as an author, and his personal experience as a volunteer bush firefighter, at the Beerwah Community Hall from 6pm on Thursday May 24. ‘From the Stars Above’ is the twelfth and final instalment in the epic saga about the Duffy and Macintosh families during the war in the Pacific in 1942. More than 350,000 copies of Peter’s 15 novels have sold in Australia and New Zealand. He has been a soldier, private investigator, police sergeant, pipelayer, trawler deckhand and adviser to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary. When not writing, Peter spends time volunteering with the Australian Rural Fire Service, which sees him fighting fires around Australia.

A teenage indigenous girl is forcibly removed from her family, sent to a state-run boarding school and told that everything she knows is inferior and that she must adopt a new culture and language. No doubt this will sound familiar to many Australians, despite Sami Blood, Maleny Film Society's latest offering, being set in Sweden in the 1930s.

The teenage girl, Elle Marja (brilliantly played by Lene Cecilia Sparrok) is a Sami, the indigenous people living in the far north of Europe. The lives of these traditional reindeer-herders have been dramatically disrupted in the twentieth century by contact with the dominant European culture.

The film's director and writer, Amanda Kernell, memorably depicts how the intelligent teenager is faced with the dilemma of being loyal to her people, or rejecting her culture, achieving academically and becoming Swedish.

This coming-of-age story, told in flashback, hauntingly explores Elle Marja's exposure to systemic ethnic bigotry and the effect on both the teenager and her sibling, played by her real-life sister, Mia Erika Sparrok.

Contributed by Patricia Bradford At our last meeting, we had a short demonstration on how to show off blooms to look their best for judging and it was good to see newer members entering the competition bench.

Viki Blaik attended the Queensland Council for Garden Club’s President's morning tea held recently and brought back suggestions and ideas that can help smaller clubs function better.

A few members enjoyed the hospitality of the Nambour Garden Club's Friendship Day recently. They reported back that their competition bench was well supported with beautiful blooms and their guest speaker, Clair Bickle, was very interesting.

We had another suggestion to repel possums – try installing solar lights next to plants.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday May 17 from 9.30am in the garden of Viki Blaik. There will be a short meeting, with morning tea, then a social gathering.

Golden Candlesticks Banksia spinulosa Golden Candlestick Banksias are flowering profusely this year, probably due to the recent rains. This Banksia is one of the most beautiful to be seen on walks around the Glass House Mountains. Banksia spinulosa is a shrub which grows to approximately two metres in height with multiple stems. The leaves are narrow and finely toothed on the edges and usually whorled at the ends of the branchlets. Banksias grow on well drained sandy soils along much of the eastern coast of Australia. Flowers appear from April through to August and range in colour from pale yellow, to deep yellow, and even a red form.

After a considerable time woody cones appear containing numerous seed follicles. Heat is required to release the winged seeds, hence Banksias regenerate well following bush fires. This can be replicated by placing woody cones in a warm oven following use for cooking.

Banksias produce nectar which is a food source for Honeyeaters, Sugar Gliders and Antechinus, while the seed follicles are targeted by the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo.

It is worth taking a walk around the Tibrogargan Circuit, Trachyte Circuit or the Soldier Settlers’ Walk to see the wonderful array of Banksias.

From the churches We have just recently remembered again Anzac Day, April 25, 1915 at 4.30am when the Anzacs went ashore at Gallipoli, many to their immediate deaths and the campaign that then went on for several years. Anzac Day is such a memorable day in our yearly calendar.

I recently heard a quote from Rommel, the German general called the ‘Desert Fox’ who fought in both WW1 and WW2 and who was held in high respect by his opponents in war for his chivalry and bravery. He said: “If I was ever going to take hell I would use the Australians to take it and New Zealanders to hold it.” Such was his respect for the Anzacs.

Anzac Day brings Australia together with such incredible unity along with New Zealand as both nations remember the incredible bravery and brotherhood of both nations along with their allies. But we also remember the futility of war and the terrible loss of so many lives and

It’s always so touching to see the huge crowds Anzac Day attracts, from the youngest to the aged, to pay respect and gratitude. Jesus said this in John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.”

That sums up the sacrifice of brave soldiers and nurses and all those that have contributed to the many campaigns over many decades to keep our nation free. It also sums up the sacrifice of Jesus that he gave his life so we could all experience an inner peace and the promise of eternal life.

All we have to do is accept him. John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Let’s continue to remember the earthly sacrifice of the Anzacs and the eternal sacrifice of Jesus.

Accompanied by various instruments including ukuleles, guitar, harmonica, xylophone and piano, they treated the residents with musical items, community singing, poems and stories.

Event co-ordinator Kylie said: “At the conclusion of the program, the residents received a bunch of flowers and each was given a therapeutic hand rub. It was good for the young ones to mix with the elderly people and show they cared for them.”

Sport The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Saturday morning practice was well attended with Sarah Widin instructing Ted Gardner, Stuart Craig and Bev Sockhill. Wallace Roy and Wendy Whitby played a game of golf croquet. Sunday morning Sarah beat Frances Harper 14–3 in a ladder game.

In the afternoon Donna beat Ken Barker 10–8 to change positions on the ladder. Donna is now third behind Nick Cram and Vince Carbery. Another game on the lawn saw Kath Smith beat Sally Adams and Frances 10-5.

We had a visit from the Range Care on Tuesday. Seventeen people and staff enjoying themselves on the lawn paints a pleasant picture.

We hosted Bribie Island in the Lochwood competition on Wednesday. Lynda Davies and Ken Wallman (Ken W) represented Bribie Island. Ken (Ken B), Donna and Vince played for Maleny. The singles in the morning were opposite sides of a coin. Donna played Lynda, got away to a fantastic start, and ended up winning 22–4. The two Kens played mistake riddled croquet for the first hour or so, making only half a dozen hoops. Then Ken B broke from 2 to the peg. Normally this wouldn’t be done at this level. The break, for a variety of reasons, would stop at 4 back and a leave set, but he decided to make hay while he could. Ken W, despite having contact and a good couple of periods of play after that, was plagued by errors and misfortune. The final result saw Ken B 26 beating Ken W 14. In the afternoon, in the doubles, Donna and Vince 19 defeated Ken W and Lynda 10. Maleny took the honours 3 games to 0.

A motley collection of games occurred on Thursday. Kath hosted Gillian Bradley from Cairns in a game of ricochet narrowly losing 11–12. Garth and Bev played a 5 all draw.

Wendy and Frances played a game of golf with Wendy triumphing 7–6. Ken played Nick Cram in an overdue ladder competition and went down in and exciting game 22–26.

Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds.

Peachester State School Cross Country Age Champions Iyla and Daniel, Emma and Sam and Montana along with Hayden, Beau, Addison, Archie and Ethan represented Peachester at the District Cross Country Carnival. Emma, Sam and Daniel did the school proud by running their way right through to the Regional Carnival.

First Place went to Alan Stevens with 39 points runner-up was Ian Dauth with 38 points on a count-back from third place winner Trevor Fairley with 38 points. NTP: 3 – Ian Dauth, 5 and 12 - Paul Viertel and 14 - Alan Stevens.

Wednesday, May 2: there was an 18 Hole Single Stableford competition run for our ladies with first place going to Mo Lawrence with 38 points, runner-up went to Anne Devane with 35 points and third place going to Seri Tytherleigh with 33 points.

Friday, May 4: Our usual Chook-Run 9 Hole competition was played with first place going to Graham Thompson, Tom Kennedy was runner-up and third place went to both Pam Cronk and John Hay – well done!

Saturday, May 5: there was an 18 hole, 2 person nett aggregate stroke competition, played by the men of our Club. First place went to the duo of Gary Wright and Matthew Owen with 150 nett, runners-up went to Paul Viertel and Corey Zammit with 151 nett and third place went to Peter Gilbert and Jason Norris with 153 nett. NTP: 5 and 14 Gary Dallyn and 12 - Peter Gilbert.

Lessons for Beginners to Advanced

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Club championships started this week with a number of games completed the quality of play and the closeness of games is a credit to all the participants. All indications so far could make predictions of a singles champion difficult to pick. One thing is for sure if any player is a little off their game and they could face elimination from the event. Great weather and the green playing beautifully allowed all players to play an array of excellent draw shots which tends to be the major skills on display so far in this year’s championships. Winners to date are Ray Pantlin, Miles Allen, Curly Peterson, Doug McGufficke.

Two games to be completed and joined by first round bye players Brett Gillies and Henry Harboult.

Amongst that group is the eventual winner – all the best men as the competition moves forward.

Thanks to those bowlers who played on Tuesday, see you all next week. We had teams play away with success, well done Jim and Joe. Wednesday night proved to be another great night of bowls. Best night’s entertainment in town. Mobile Kingdom kept their winning form despite the loss of regular member Dennis Kyling.

Suggestions from within the competition is that a number of likely replacements want to join the front runners. Bad luck guys Dennis will return refreshed from some downtime at Bribie raring to go. It was great to see some visitors play at the club on Wednesday night.

Gary Darcy needed to be on his best form to impress with some lovely bowls. Reliable information tells me VB can improve your fine motor skills if used in moderation. Don Ginns hit some real form despite changes to his team. Puzzlingly a form change could be the new diet; burgers and bowls goes well. Helps with the lucky numbers win also. Talking about changes, thanks to the organiser Miles Allen who went to ridiculous lengths to include visitors and find replacements as some of our regular stars are holidaying in Tasmania.

Quality food was back with barbeque extraordinaire Tony Yorkston taking over the reins from backups Steve Porter and Ben Fawns. Thanks again guys from all for your efforts every week with the cooking and clean up. Much appreciated by all.

What a great Friday afternoon of Scroungers, faster greens found a few out on their draw bowls. Great weather, great bowls and great to see some of newcomers come out on top. Come and join in, stay on for nibbles, drinks and lucky draw.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Frawley Witta Wagtails were unfortunately rained out and did not get a game last Wednesday.

Whistlers played at Witta, against Mooloolaba Legends. It was nice day for tennis, and it was good tennis. We didn't win but everyone enjoyed the day. Score was 20-42 games.

Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and thanks Annie Lyons for filling in.

Division 2 is strong tennis and the Wildcats are enjoying their tennis. Once again it was a close match against the Mooloolaba Mojito’s.

Pauline, Stacey, Libby and Jenie did their best but went down by 5 games. So close again.
