Hi Everyone On Friday night we went along to the opening of the Lions Club’s Art and Artisan’s Show held at the Glass House Mountains State School Hall. What a great event this was with an amazing variety of artwork produced by local artists and entered in four categories, Still Life including flowers, Landscape, Portraiture / Figures and Glasshouse Country Theme. The winner of each category took home a prize of $500.00 with the overall winner taking home an additional $750.00 cheque. And while the winners were grinners, I think there was still a thrill for many of the artists to be able to exhibit their work. I was really impressed with the work, and I have to say more than a little bit jealous – I really fancy myself as an artist – but I have come to accept that not all of us have ‘it’.

A few years ago following an abstract art workshop I had done, I went to pick up my masterpiece and the gallery owner was so very encouraging and enthusiastic about my work. She said she loved the subtle way I had incorporated the woman’s eye looking out from the centre of the painting. I quietly took the compliment knowing that not only did I not intentionally paint an eye, I wasn’t even sure where the eye was - and worse still, the canvas was actually sideways when she was looking at. So I would like to take my hat off to everyone who entered their work in the art show and thanks for the enjoyment you provided.

Regards,

Local student heads to Greece to represent Australia In a sportsperson’s life, it doesn’t get much better than representing your country on the world stage. For Year 12 Beerwah State High School student, Mitchell James, this isn’t just a dream but a reality. Mitchell is heading to Greece on June 25 to represent Australia in tennis at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games. Mitchell is part of a 132 strong Australian team which will compete at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. Last Wednesday, Mitchell received a $1,000 cheque from the Beerwah State High School P & C Association. “It’s wonderful to be able to support Mitchell, we’re very proud of his achievements and we wish him all the best,” said Shari Brewer, Secretary of the P & C. Tennis has been a part of Mitchell’s life since he was five-years-old. Currently ranked number 17, Mitchell is rapidly rising up the rankings. To qualify for the World Games he needed to win gold in the Special Olympics National Games which were held in Adelaide last year. Mitchell not only won gold in the singles but also silver in the doubles. Other achievements include participating in the Victoria Tennis Championships in March where he came third in singles and was a finalist in doubles. In January, as part of Tennis Australia’s PWID (People with an Intellectual Disability), he played in Melbourne at the Australian Open.

Mitchell is excited about heading to Greece. “I’m looking forward to meeting people from different cultures, having fun and playing tennis. I want to thank the school, the P & C, for donating this money. It makes me feel proud that the school’s getting behind me and helping me,” he said. The generous donation will go towards coaching lessons, clothes and equipment such as racquets and shoes. proposed construction of a 35 metre high mobile phone tower in the centre of town by Optus.

Neighbours Anne Eglinton and Keith Hoffman were only a handful of residents to be notified of the mobile phone tower with a letter arriving only a couple of weeks ago. Anne immediately began asking around town if anyone else knew of the proposed phone tower and was surprised to find businesses, the school and other residents knew nothing about it. For the phone tower to go ahead Sunshine Coast Council would have to approve a zoning change application by Optus from Core Industry to Telecommunication Facility. Anne has started a petition to try and stop this from happening but any submissions to Council have to be received by June 14. Anne and Keith have several concerns if a mobile phone tower was to go ahead. “My main thing is the unknown radiation emissions,” Anne said. “And for the future generations, what we are leaving…..there might be awful sicknesses and cancers.” Keith agrees. “It’s the height of the tower, it’s a terribly tall structure and it’s the possible effect of radiation on primarily the state school, the kindergarten and the surrounding residents,” he said. “I also think it will impact greatly on the historic nature of Landsborough and particularly the restored railway station. “This tower is going to be within 20 metres of the No 2 platform and to the residents of Landsborough and the passengers and interstate

Keith and Anne with the site for the phone tower on their left and international visitors who get off at the station they’re going hop out of the train and be confronted by this 35 metre tower. “I appreciate that people want improved mobile phone and possible internet connections but I think there are far better areas to place such a tower to provide such facilities then right in the centre of the township of Landsborough,” said Keith. Keith said according to Optus’s application, the tower should be 500 metres away from schools, but this one will be 210 metres to the state school and 200 metres to the C & K Kindergarten. “They dismiss it by saying it’s just an arbitrary figure,” he said. He also said the Landsborough Township Planning Area Code states the height of building and structures must not exceed 11m. “They tried to overcome that by implying it’s not a structure but a monopole,” he said. Petitions against the phone tower can be signed at various locations around town including Landsborough IGA, the Laundromat, Landsborough State School, the Kindergarten, the Childcare Centre in Mill Street and Morris House.

Local resident receives Premiers Award

Bev Ham with Premier Anna Bligh

Glass House Mountains resident Reverend Bev Ham, doesn’t like to call herself a hero, but a lot of people think she is one, which is the reason she has received the Premier’s Queensland Disaster Heroes medal on June 4. Bev was one of many Queenslanders who received the award at recognition ceremonies around the state during Queensland Week. The medals were given to those people in the community who showed community initiative, bravery, courage, resilience, and strength during the flood and cyclone disasters. Now retired, Bev, 71, was a minister for the Uniting Church for 47 years, however being ‘retired’ doesn’t mean Bev has stopped helping others. “When I saw in January what was happening in the Lockyer Valley like everyone else I was pretty devastated and I was probably more devastated because of the fact that I was the Minister there 30 years ago and I had a very happy time in Ministry there,” Bev said. “I was based in Laidley but I used to travel

up to Gatton and Grantham and Helidon and all the places that were affected. “I got in touch with some friends and said I’d be happy to come over if I could help in any way. As soon as the road was open I went across there thinking I might be able to support some people, mainly emotionally,” she said. Bev wondered what else she could take besides herself and thought homemade biscuits would be a good idea. Within three days, community minded people had contributed 3,000 biscuits which Bev distributed to the flood affected. Bev thought she’d be there a couple of weeks; she ended up staying for eight. “I stayed at Forest Hill which is a small town of about 300 people and the majority of those people were evacuated in the Black Hawk helicopters. It all happened so quickly that people were finding it hard to comprehend what had really happened to them,” she said. Bev’s support included visiting people every day and offering emotional support and a listening ear to those shell-shocked by the disaster. “I wouldn’t say I did in depth counselling or even crisis counselling, I’d say that I listened to a lot of stories and a lot of heartache and I just needed to be there for people,” she said. Bev might not like to call herself a hero, stating that the name belongs to the helicopter pilots who plucked people off roofs and the people wading into flood waters to rescue people, but there is one thing she can’t deny – she made a difference.

A quiet life

Leslie William Moffat was born December 26, 1925. The second son to David and Grace Moffat of Glass House Mountains and brother to David (dec) and Eric. Les went to the Glass House School but left when he was 12 or 13 to help on the family pineapple farm, during which he learnt how to work long hard days, a work ethic to he passed onto his own family – including no talking when working. With this time off he enjoyed going to dances and it was at one dance at Glass House where he caught the eye of a local Landsborough girl Moya Kowald. Love soon blossomed and they married in 1952, before returning to the farm to live, where they raised their family – Wayne, Warren, Craig and Leslie (dec.) Les lived a very quiet life, but worked hard on the farm. He enjoyed many simple pleasures that life had to offer. Like a cold beer and the cricket. And Sundays he spent with his family at the beach. When his sons joined the local scout group, Les was there to help with the bottle drives. Christmas was a special time for Les and Moya as they would spend six weeks holiday at the Kings Beach Caravan Park. But Boxing Day was the most important day for the family as it was the day they celebrated Les’s birthday. Les caught the travelling bug in later years (only after much pushing from Moya), travelling around Australia in a camper trailer. While Les was mostly a quiet and reserved man, he would wander off for ages after they had set up camp. When Les did come back, Moya would find out that he had been off chatting to someone. He could strike up a conversation with anyone with a few words such as ‘Good day Pop’. As Les’s health deteriorated recently, he was still thinking about the next trip he and Moya were going on. Sadly Les didn’t get to have that trip as he passed away on May 22. A man whose life was quiet and simple but had a big impact on all who knew him.

CWA Photo Competition

There were 87 entries submitted for this year’s annual photo competition from the Peachester branch of the CWA, proving it difficult to make a choice for judge Ilia Starkovsky. “The quality from all the entrants was of such a high standard,” said Ilia. The winners (first, second and highly commended) from each category will be judged in the divisional competition, and on to the final State competition to be held in Charters Towers towards the end of the year.

Tight lines with Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc. Contributed by David Brace, President EMFMI Formed a year ago from humble beginnings, many locals from all walks of life joined together for one cause. The group’s aim was to primarily restock native fish back into Ewen Maddock Dam after a lengthy period of about 10 years. We held our AGM last month. After many inquiries from the public and the success of the group’s activities (placing almost 30,000 fish fingerlings into Ewen Maddock Dam in its inaugural year), and liaising with Steven Brooks from DEEDI, we’re proud to announce EMFMI will also be stocking fish into Baroon Pocket Dam. It hasn’t been stocked for quite some time. We welcome new members and sponsors as we grow to take on this new role as there is much work to be done, along with the cost of this project. We still hold our monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of every month at the Mooloolah Country Club at 7.00pm. Anyone is welcome to come along and membership fees for this year are only $25.00.

Recently, there have been some great reports coming from the EMD with a group of kayaking anglers from Kayak Fishing Down Under hitting the lake, resulting in about 20 Bass being caught in a short session. There have also been reports of some Saratoga being caught on surface late in the afternoon, near the edges of the sedge weed on the south-eastern side of the dam. Very soon, the Bass will start schooling and will be easier to locate throughout the lake as the weather gets cooler heading into Spring. Best lure options when this occurs are small blades and ice jigs, however, casting spinnerbaits at the edges will also result in some great fish being caught. Tight Lines!

Lions show off great local art Last weekend’s Lions Art and Artisan Show held as part of the Glasshouse Country Festival was the largest presented in the Glasshouse Country area for some years with the total valuations of art exhibited alone being almost $40,000.00.

Ron Hills with his self portrait With some 81 entries from local artists in the four competitive categories of Landscape (the most popular), Still Life / Floral, Portraiture / Figures and Glasshouse Country theme with 29 non competitive entries also being exhibited, made for a great show. The exhibition included works by some highly accredited artists within the Glasshouse Country area who were all vying for the first prizes and champion awards. Congratulations to those local first timer artists who were brave in exhibiting their work for the very first time and who will have enjoyed a great experience and learnt from competing.

www.gcnews.com.au

Other artisan items such as jewellery, decorated woodwork, mounted art prints and art cards were also included with everything being available for purchase. The Lions Club expresses sincere gratitude to demonstrating artists Joy Joyce, Julie Gould and Frances Harper for their different and interesting arts techniques and tips all given freely. They would encourage locals to consider giving them your business if you are seeking further tuition in their particular genre. They would also like to thank Glasshouse Mountains State School Principal Elizabeth Somers and staff for their ongoing assistance, interest and support with Beerwah Lions holding this show in their new and well outfitted assembly hall. Students were also encouraged to take part in the exhibition with some of their art being on show. Results: The winners of the show were: Portrait – Ron Hills, Landscape – Chris Blake, Still life – Jan Scallion and Glasshouse Country Theme and overall winner – Julie Gould. The Peoples Choice winner was Peter Voigt with his painting entitled, ‘Mars Dreaming’, congratulations to Peter. The raffle of the beautiful water colour painting of 'Egrets on Tibro' was drawn by the painting donor Joy Joyce with Val Davis of Mooloolah, a very lucky and ecstatic winner. The ticker seller was the Art show's art hanging director Wendy Kirkwood. Thank you to all who supported the Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation by purchasing raffle tickets.

Locals sleep out to raise money

MOOLOOLAH DENTAL SURGERY

Glass House Mountains residents Emily and Joshua Counter and Chloe Torrens braved the cold night air in Caboolture recently to raise money for local homeless people in the Annual Sleepout. Their goal was to raise $500.00. Organised by the Rotary Club of Caboolture, the Annual Sleepout is held in the Caboolture Historical Village and this year drew between 50 and 60 people, who braved the chilly night to remember those less fortunate than themselves. An organiser said Rotary has banked over $2,700.00, with more expected to come in as participants collect funds from their sponsors. All proceeds raised go to Caboolture Family Haven.

Gumboots were the one essential item for 17 Glasshouse Country Christian College senior students on a weekend Biology Camp. The camp was held on a Beerwah farm just two kilometres from GCCC and yet the discoveries were a biology bonanza. Students waded around the dam collecting floating weeds for examination. When the specimens were put under the microscope, they discovered what has been described as the world’s smallest fern, Azolla, mixed in with the weeds. Azolla is one of a few species of floating ferns and has a significant effect on nitrogen levels in dams. In many parts of Southeast Asia, Azolla is collected and used as a biofertiliser to boost agriculture productivity. Even more fascinating, this plant is green when it grows in shaded areas but quite red when it grows in the sun.

GCCC Biology Students show that there is always time for fun on camp The discoveries continued when the students came across a saw-shelled turtle (Elseya latisternum). The turtle is carnivorous, feeding on fish, tadpoles, frogs, and is one of the few native Australian animals who successfully prey on cane toads. Small toads are swallowed whole but bigger ones are first shredded by the turtle’s front claws. After students documented their discoveries, it was time for less serious activities such as slinging mud at each other and trying to dunk everyone in the cold waters of the dam’s edge. Gumboots that began the day in bright colours and patterns all ended up the same brown colour – covered in mud!

Get Real with Facebook Social networking phenomenon, Facebook, gets almost one hundred billion hits a day, and there is no sign of slowing the service down. It seems that people want to delve deeper into their friends, work colleagues and family members’ lives – particularly us teenagers. When used wisely, Facebook can be a great socialising tool. However, lately, Facebook seems to have become a major issue within the 13 - 18 demographic. People who constantly update their status just to annoy others, people leaving abusive messages for another on their profile page – it’s all a part of the trend. From past experiences, I’ve learnt a few tips and tricks to stay away from the mess. Firstly, never update your status on the hour. No one really cares that you just finished watching a rerun of the Masterchef episode and no one cares that you just made yourself a peanut butter sandwich. C’mon, not even Miley Cyrus updates her fans that regularly. Secondly, never vent your frustration with another on your Facebook status – even if it’s done in the most subtle way. Trust me, that person will work out that you’re referring to them. And that isn’t going to be pretty. Last but not least, don’t spend your evenings ‘liking’ dozens of things. Unless it’s an ‘Angry Boys’ quote, I’m just not interested. Really, all you’re doing is wasting your time and clogging up others newsfeeds, including my own. Keeping your newsfeed a peaceful place doesn’t take that much hard work, and will probably make the Facebook experience more enjoyable for yourself and the people you’re ‘friends’ with. And hey, who knows, maybe you’ll have more time to hang out with your friends face to face.

Proud Dad Charlie Byers shares his love of books with an enthusiastic Cooper St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School had some much older students recently, when parents were the class at the Ready Reader workshops run by the Queensland government. Video clips alternated with group work around butcher’s paper, as the interactive workshops taught parents how to encourage literacy in young children. Each two-and-a-half hour workshop focused on strategies to support parents, and provided information on the development through the phases of the reading process. “We’re all about fostering that love of reading,” said Presenter Cheryn Downing. “The Parent Ready Readers workshops relieve some of the pressure off parents, by affirming what they’re already doing, and showing them how to continue building their children’s literacy confidence at home.” Valuing parents and the contribution they make to their children’s education is an integral part of the Parent Ready Readers program. “If you want to help your children read successfully,” said Cheryn, “the key ingredient is to make it fun.” At the end of each workshop, she handed out certificates and told the parents to put them up on their fridges at home. “Just for today, put something on the fridge that’s yours, and not your child’s. Celebrate that you’ve done this!” she said, smiling at the parents’ laughter. “We don’t do that enough now then, do we?”

Review: Gigabyte M1405 Notebook Computer This month we are going to review a fantastic little notebook. You may not have heard of Gigabyte as a brand that make laptops – that’s because in previous years, they didn’t. However, Gigabyte have been making very high quality components for desktop computer systems for years… and this experience has translated into a great notebook. The M1405 combines style with a high level of functionality. It features a brushed metal lid that is available in red, blue, silver or gold. It is also a slim line, light weight model that makes it very portable. It is a 14” unit with 1366x768 screen resolution; it has a low voltage 1.3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor; 2GB RAM (upgradeable to 4GB); and a 320GB Hard Drive. There are two main features that make this laptop stand out from the rest. The first is that the DVD drive can be completely removed to make way for a second battery. Its standard six cell battery is claimed to have a 10 hour run time – and that’s not including the second battery! The other great feature is the docking station that can be purchased as an accessory. In addition to three more USB ports, Gigabyte has put an NVidia GeForce GT220 graphics chip with 1GB of memory in the station, along with DVI, VGA and HDMI ports. This means that the docking station can drive two different desktop monitors while you’re connected to it. In addition, this laptop has the capacity for a 3G module (an accessory) allowing you to put a sim card straight into the computer. No need for annoying 3G dongles hanging out of your computer! If the above sounds like it suits your needs, pop in to our store and have a play with the demo unit we have set up – you wont be disappointed!

Meddling with media With digital cameras and MP3 players now priced from as low as $20.00, everyone’s getting into the digital action. This in turn leads to our PC hard drives slowly filling up with “multimedia” files. The question is: once you’ve got them, what do you do with them? MP3 and other audio files can be copied across to an MP3 player, or played live from our PC. Images can be printed out or viewed on our screens, but what if we wanted to get a little more creative? Whether it’s for scrapbooking, building our website, or just for fun, there’s a growing need to be able to edit and manage our multimedia files ourselves. There’s plenty of expensive software out there that can achieve this for you, but today I present a couple of freeware options to get you started. Picasa Photo Studio - http://picasa.google.com This free and easy application, brought to you by the team at Google, will have you organising and editing your image collection in minutes. This 100 per cent free software allows you to crop, resize and add numerous effects to your images. The Picasa website also features a link that you can follow through to Google’s Picasa Web Albums, which will allow you to add your newly edited images into virtual albums, and share them with friends and family online. Audacity - http://audacity.sourceforge.net Audacity is a free and open source program that lets you record, edit and save sound and music files, including MP3s, and has a vast array of effects for you to apply to your music. There’s hours of fun to be had with this program. Be sure to grab the latest version (1.3.13) when downloading this application.

with James Ashby Marketing and PR Manager, Gowinta Farms As winter creeps in across the Sunshine Coast, local pineapple growers will see a slow down in production over the next four to six weeks. The cooler weather and shorter days reduce the sweetening of both the smooth cayene and new hybrid varieties, leaving a shortage in both the fresh food market and cannery supply. The decrease in pineapples is that great, it brings the states largest processing plant Golden Circle to a halt. Golden Circle have their annual shut down period across the entire month of July for maintenance ensuring the plant is in fine working order for the onslaught of fresh pineapples from the middle of August. The Sunshine Coast is the countries second largest producer of pineapples in Australia, with an estimated 20,000 tonnes of fruit picked annually. The slow down in pineapple production across June / July gives farms ample planting time, along with maintenance on farm machinery and sometimes a short holiday. The question on most consumers’ lips is ‘how do you pick a good pineapple off the shelf’? There have been lots of theories behind choosing a tasty, ripe pineapple - from pulling a leaf to smelling the base of the fruit. The reality is, pineapples are only ever picked ripe, meaning every pineapple on the shelf will be ready to eat. During summer they're picked with a greener skin, however in winter they're picked with a more golden appearance. The average pineapple picker can pick up to 1,000 pines per hour, making it one of the most demanding jobs in farming. While there's a shortage in pineapples over the next two months, rest assured the strawberry industry is just coming into its glory. Record prices of up to $8.00 per punnet have been paid in both the Sydney and Brisbane markets making it the strongest year for growers ever. Strawberry farms across the region are all reporting a strong number of fruit beginning to come off the plants which will see a decrease in shelf prices over coming weeks. New Director at Coonowrin Road Childcare Centre

Childcare centres are always full of new little faces, but the latest friendly face at Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre and Preschool on Coonowrin Tracey with James Road belongs to its new Director, Tracey McDonald. and Abigail Tracey started at the Centre last month and has 10 years experience in the childcare industry. Originally from the UK, she achieved her NVQ in Childcare qualification which is the equivalent of a Diploma in Childcare Services in Australia. She is currently studying for an advanced Diploma in Children’s Services. Moving to Australia in 2008, her last role was as assistant Director of Caboolture QCCS (Queensland Childcare Services). Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre and Preschool is part of QCCS which has been privately owned and operated for over 18 years. With two children of her own, a daughter 17 and son 13, Tracey is passionate about childcare. “I believe that every child is an individual and we need to treat them as individuals. My goal is for every child to go home feeling happy and fulfilled; they had a good day and are going home with a smile on their face,” she said. Tracey said stepping into the role of Director has been made easier because it’s such an excellent facility already. “It’s a beautiful centre,” she said. “It’s brand new, it’s clean, and the girls here are so passionate about making sure that every child is catered for. And the rooms are fantastic.” At the moment Tracey’s main goal is make sure more parents know about the Centre. “We provide excellent duty of care. The staff are fabulous. We do have a fantastic service. We just want to provide quality of care for each and every child. I guarantee that we give it in this Centre,” she said. The Centre is fully Accredited through the National Child Care Accreditation Council and provides care for children from six weeks to 12 years. Other benefits include before and after school care and vacation care; a free courtesy bus for a 10 kilometre radius; a portfolio for every child which goes home with them; individualised emergent, educational program; dynamic School Readiness program; perceptual motor programme and caters for every culture, every belief, every religion. The Centre is open 6.30am to 6.30pm. For more information about everything the Centre offers phone 5438 7311 or email glasshouse@qccs.com.au

New role for Andrea

If you’re a regular at the Glasshouse Sports Club you may recognise their new manager, Andrea Pearce. For the past four years Andrea has working at the Club casually. However, what many of you may not know is that while she wasn’t at the Club she was being kept busy as the Assistant Manager at the Woodford Golf Club and then the Caboolture Golf Club. Or you may have known her during the eighties when she was a soccer player with the club for a decade, she has also played netball and touch football so with her work and sporting experience she has a great background for the new job. Andrea is really enjoying the challenge of the new role and is definitely keen to spread the word on what a great club it is. The club already has many regulars who call in for a drink and enjoy relaxing in the bar area, and plenty of locals who enjoy a meal in the dining room on Thursday and Friday night. However Andrea wants to remind readers who haven’t been into the club before to come in and give them a try. Anyone looking for a room to hold a wedding or special occasion celebration should check out their function room, which is about to be on the receiving end of a mini makeover. The room hire rates are really reasonable and they also provide a full catering service, with set menus starting from $29.95 a head. With the lovely gardens and their very own gazebo, some couples get married and have their reception at the same location which makes things stress free for the bride and groom as well as their guests. If you haven’t already checked out the club you might want to make a note of the next Muso’s night on Thursday, June 16 where you can have some great local entertainment for free as well as coming in for a drink and a meal. If you would like to know more about what the club has to offer you can contact them on 5493 0055 or call into the club on Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains. Andrea Pearce www.gcnews.com.au

Life for Maisie At the Caboolture Family History Group Inc. (CFHRG), the name of Maisie Stratford (nee Stebbings,) is synonymous with the Isle of Wight. Our Maisie, who was born and bred ‘on the island’, is a fount of knowledge on all things to do with the Isle of Wight and ‘ye olde English names and language’. But don’t stop her there, as Maisie has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to researching family history around the world. To Maisie’s delight, CFHRG has facilities to help her to search worldwide and, to date, she has traced her family back to the 1640’s in England. Maisie is a familiar face at A few years ago, Maisie arrived on our fair shores Caboolture Family History to make a new life for herself with her few Research Group remaining relatives. At 81, our Maisie is one-of-akind. (Fortunately, she says, as they threw away the mould after she was born.) A keen family historian, to the point where she colour-codes the families on her tree, she is always ready and willing to share her knowledge with anyone at CFHRG. We are situated at the Caboolture Historical Village at 280 Beerburrum Road, Caboolture, (where there is no entry fee to enter the village to visit our group premises). Maisie has a wicked sense of humour, she can generally tell you the meaning of your surname, and steer you in the right direction for finding out more information about your family. This lady is a dedicated researcher, artist, needlework expert and enthusiastic collector of buttons. She also volunteers at CFHRG premises most days it is open. Maisie was recently nominated by a CFHRG member for life membership. The nomination went before the group committee and was ratified. At the last meeting, Maisie reluctantly accepted her certificate for life membership, claiming it should be given to someone more worthy. Our Maisie joins an elite group of dedicated group members who enjoy sharing skills and knowledge in a friendly environment. We have an array of candidates putting themselves forward for the local government election next year. Let’s hope that there will be one who is aware of what we and our area requires, and be there to represent you and I to the best of their ability. We require a candidate who will stand up and be heard, who will consider what is required, strive to get that whatever, and do their best, that will be a criteria I will be looking for, so far I have not seen that. We do not require a candidate pushing his or her own barrow, we want one who believes in our area, what they can help achieve for our end of the electorate and get things done correctly. By that, I mean roads, drains, grass cut etc properly and in a more efficient and effective manner that we have to put up with at present. By that I refer to the manner in which the median strips, grass verges and other grass areas are cut, the waste grass and rubbish is left there to eventually get back into our drains and creeks. When we get our rain, as we do, we have blocked drains and further man-made water problems. The roads being filled by a shovel full of gravel, tar or whatever is a band-aid fix and a waste of money. I am proud and happy to live in the Glass House Mountains, but I would like more, so when you make your decision for our new candidate, be responsible and thoughtful. Take the time to check each candidate out, remember this candidate will be responsible to you, the rate payer and to our area. We want one who will do their utmost for each and every one of us. That person will be my candidate. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

Paradise Preserved Contributed by the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Management Committee: Recently there has been media attention that identifies some concerns over developments at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. As members of the Management Committee who have been appointed to represent the views of the community in the Reserve’s preservation and development, we believe that expression of these concerns is a good thing. The Management Committee was closely involved with Council in planning for the car park upgrade, keen to minimise any impact on the natural beauty of the Reserve, but also desired to overcome a number of problems with the existing arrangements. The current car park was never intended to cater for the present traffic flow the Reserve experiences. It’s rutted, unmarked, and dangerous (particularly when wet) and it encroaches on the Education Centre. The new arrangements will improve safety and restore the area in front of the Education Centre as green space for recreation and enjoyment. The Committee is very concerned about the potential for the Reserve to become ‘over-loved’, so the number of parking spaces remains the same. The new car park is designed around existing vegetation wherever possible and indeed will include a good deal more planting of native species. It will also be smaller than the existing car park, actually increasing the area available as recreational and open space in front of the Education Centre. Bus space is important because many schools throughout South East Queensland increasingly see the educational value of the Reserve and bring their students for guided tours as part of their curriculum. The Management Committee and Council applaud this interest. More buses (group tours) also mean fewer cars, so buses are encouraged in the new arrangement. The kiosk at the Reserve is a much-loved meeting place and will continue to be so. Maleny has plenty of ‘up market’ restaurants and it is not intended to duplicate them. The current facilities are at a point where they need to be up graded, but the Reserve will continue to provide a cafe catering to the needs of people who currently visit. The Management Committee, volunteers like the majority of people involved in the Reserve, is totally committed to the preservation of the Reserve. Comments left by the general public including thousands of school children are testimony to its beauty and we would never violate the trust imposed on us as keepers of the spirit in which the Thynne sisters donated the land. Without the many volunteers who support its operation, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve would not exist as it does today. If you’d like to be involved as a Volunteer in the Reserve, please contact Rose Harmon on 5429 6122 and help keep the Reserve a tranquil and beautiful place. www.gcnews.com.au

Brandenburg Road, Bald Knob - Road slip repair works are now complete and the road has been reopened to traffic. Recent wet season floods caused significant damage which resulted in road closure. More slip repairs will be carried out over time.

Approval has been given to the Beef Packaging and Small Butcher outlet on 230 Burys Road, Beerwah. A total of 11 submissions were received - all in favour. The application is consistent with the intent of the State Government's South East Qld Regional Plan and the Council's Planning Scheme.

Telecommunications Facility Telstra are in the process of upgrading existing sites throughout our region. The existing site at 3269 Old Gympie Road, Mt Mellum, which has previous development approval, is to have an improved tower. Telstra advise that this is needed to keep pace with the growth of technologies and improved devices such as smart phones like the iPhone, iPad and Blackberry's. The current network is not providing enough capacity and depth of coverage to allow for the massive growth in the data requirements of these new phones. The proposed site is required to provide this depth of coverage to support high speed data rates that customers expect whilst utilising Data cards and their Smart phones on the Telstra Next G network.

Glenview Cemetery – Parking Council will be installing a four hour parking restriction at the Glenview Cemetery, in the next four to six weeks. This decision has been made not as a ‘revenue raiser’ but as a deterrent to car poolers who park in the area all day and people visiting the cemetery are unable to get a park. We will look at the issue of room for car poolers once construction is complete at the Rustic Cabin. Cr Anna is available for meetings, by appointment only, at her Beerwah office located in the BADYAC building, in the Beerwah Sportsground Complex on Roberts Road. Please call 5420 8987 to book a time.

Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens It is all happening in the gardens. The work of the ‘Friends of the Maroochy Regional Botanic Gardens’ is continuing and as usual, they’re doing a sterling job of maintenance and improvements to the grounds and gardens. A draft and brief will be completed by the end of July on the Landscaping for the Experimental Gardens. The brief covers the garden at the Arts and Ecology Centre and three locations for the Children's experimental Garden. The three sites for investigation are the Whip Bird Walk, Natural Area at PDA4 and in front of the new Arts and Ecology Building. Why not take a guided tour? Free tours of the gardens are provided by the Friends volunteer guides. The tours run on the first and third Wednesdays of each month commencing at 9.00am except for public holidays and they do not run in December and January. These walks are an interesting way to learn about the plants and their stories, and the history of the gardens. Trained guides will conduct the walks, which are taken at a gentle pace for approximately one hour. Bookings are not required; just meet the guides at the entrance to the gardens near the car park. Group bookings can be arranged by phoning Margaret on 5445 3375. On a final note, the Arts and Ecology Centre is to be officially opened in late August early September, I will let you know more details closer to the day.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Week runs June 5 - 11 as a reminder it is one of the nation’s biggest cancer killers, having claimed the lives of 3,812 Queensland men and women from 2003 - 2007, (according to the latest release of the Bowel Cancer Atlas of Australia). Queensland’s rate is the same as the national average for bowel cancer deaths – 20.3 per 100,000. One in 12 Australians will be diagnosed with bowel cancer in their lifetime and it is the second biggest cancer killer of Australians, after lung cancer. The week is also a reminder to Australians that 90 per cent of bowel cancer cases can be treated successfully if caught in time, making screening a literal life-saver. Bowel Cancer Australia chief executive officer Julien Wiggins said bowel cancer screening at least every two years is recommended for people aged 50 and over. “It’s simple, painless and you can do the test in the privacy of your home, he added. While bowel cancer risk increases with age, data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Cancer Database shows both the incidence of bowel cancer, and deaths from the disease, are rising more rapidly in younger people than other age groups.

Colorectal surgeon, Associate Professor Graham Newstead AM said there was a 64 per cent increase in the incidence of bowel cancer in people aged 20 - 34 years between the five-year period 1992 - 1996 and 2002 - 2006. “This is more than five times the increase seen across all age groups, Professor Newstead said. “You should never be told that you are too young to have bowel cancer. “We need to be mindful that young people can and do get bowel cancer. If they have any symptoms or concerns, they need to see their GP immediately, said Professor Newstead. Remember to act on symptoms with possible signs of bowel cancer including a change in bowel habit or blood in the stool. If you have any symptoms, see your GP immediately and remember, you are never too young to have bowel cancer. Test kits for screening are available at participating pharmacies or by phoning 1800 555 494.

Lavender for leukaemia

Lila, the lavender bear, can be purchased this June towards helping leukaemia patients. The Leukaemia Foundation’s ‘Lavender for leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma’ appeal is on throughout June, with a selection of lavender-themed merchandise available at various shopping centres and participating businesses including any CUA branch, Fernwood, Fitness First, Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology and QML Pathology. The fragrant lavender flower was chosen as it symbolises healing, cleansing and longevity.

Miranda Crosby shows off Lila the bear, who is helping to make lives a little brighter

The lavender themed merchandise will include Lila the lavender teddy bear, pens, bookmarks, pot-pourri and soaps all selling for under $10.00. Proceeds from the sale of lavender products will benefit patients and their families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. The Leukaemia Foundation hopes to raise $200,000 through this appeal to fund exciting advances in medical research and practical support services for patients and their families designed to ease the emotional and financial burdens that come with a blood cancer diagnosis. Bringing the human face to this cause is young Miranda Crosby of the Sunshine Coast, pictured with Lila the bear. Miranda’s brother Adem is currently undergoing treatment for leukaemia in Brisbane while the family stays close by in a unit. The Crosby family are keen to encourage all Queenslanders to support the Lavender appeal so other families receive the same support free of charge from the Leukaemia Foundation. As a not-for-profit organisation, the Leukaemia Foundation relies on regular fundraisers as well as the generous support of individuals, community organisations and businesses to continue vital medical research and expand its services. You can purchase your lavender items from Beerwah Surgery at 6/72 Simpson Street, Beerwah and Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, 5 Maleny Street, Landsborough.

The Glass House Country RSL Sub-Branch is alive and well, as demonstrated by the successful South East District Clubs’ recent reunion. President, Libby Dios-Brun, welcomed a full house of 70 delegates from district sub-branches. She told the audience there had been some public confusion in recent times about local RSL changes. The Beerwah RSL sub-branch, represented at the reunion luncheon by its president John Rohan, was currently renovating its premises before re-opening its social facilities while the memorial club that had been operating from the Beerwah RSL sub-branch building, was relocating to the Glass House Bowls Club. Mrs Dios-Brun said that while the Beerwah changes were going on, local people had become aware that the Glass House sub-branch may be relocated because of future widening of Steve Irwin Way and a proposed six-lane intersection at Glass House. Main Roads were considering using land on the western side of Steve Irwin Way. “The changes involving our RSL may not occur for at least five years. In the meantime we will continue to function as usual, including our Friday night dinners and hosting events such as this annual reunion,” Mrs Dios-Brun said. Glass House Girl Guides assisted RSL volunteers with the three-course luncheon which was addressed by John Strachan, OAM, the South East District President who reminded delegates of the substantial amount of community work carried out by RSL personnel. Federal MP Peter Slipper, State MP Andrew Powell, and Division One councillor Anna Grosskreutz were among guests at the reunion.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Fr Stan Griffith Caloundra Catholic parish There is probably no more divisive issue on the Australian agenda than the argument about how to deal with global warming and how much you and I contribute to carbon emissions. There is a great deal of discussion on whether the earth’s atmosphere is indeed warming, and if this is so, how much do human beings contribute significantly to this rise? Sadly the issue has been taken up by the politicians and has become a political football, to the point where we, the ordinary citizens, are finding increasing dificulty in determining fact from fiction. It is with this confusion in mind that I offer the following thoughts from the Bible that might throw a few glimmers of reality on the issue. If we turn to the creation narratives in Genesis we get a number of ideas on what our role is in the continuing saga of God’s creation. To do this we have to expand our understanding of the creation story to see these events as not confined to the dim distant past but continuing into the present day and into the future. In

Genesis we find God deciding to create humans ‘in the image of himself’ and he says, ‘be fruitful and multiply’ and, ‘be masters of the fish, the birds and all living animals’ (Gen1: 27-31). Now this seems to indicate that everything on earth is there for our benefit and for centuries human beings have exploited the earth and its products for selfish ends based on God’s instruction. Yet if we read on in Genesis we find a much older tradition offering different insights. Here the author has God recommending that humanity’s role is as a nurturer and carer for creation. ‘Yahweh God took the man and settled him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and take care of it.’ A much gentler instruction than the former quote. If then we are still participants in the continuing act of God’s creation then we must heed the latter instruction as it seriously amends God’s previous instruction. The earth is not here solely for our benefit to show a profit while we destroy nature. We have to give serious consideraton to determining what will achieve the best results using the best strategies. Carbon emissions are an issue that needs all parties to work in unison rather than politicizing the issue for political gain.

Gardening for the young at heart I just LOVE winter vegetable gardening! It’s the season where a truce is called between me and the pests and I get to enjoy eating my vegetables without the fear of added critter proteins. I also get to feel like I’m catching up to the weeds and my garden looks loved again. It is however, a little brisk in the morning and cools off quickly in the evening, which limits the hours I can happily garden while my kids either help or enjoy some outdoors time. This being the case, I am itching for school holidays, when I can really spend some quality time in the garden with my kids. In preparation for the upcoming school holidays, I thought I’d pass on some fun garden ideas for kids, whether they are your children, grandchildren, or even your own inner-child, everyone can enjoy these! Coloured flowers Ever wanted blue gerberas or maybe some red celery? Simply grab a white or light coloured gerbera or a piece of young celery and place its stem into some food dye. Within an hour, you will have a very different coloured flower or some crazy looking celery! This is a great way for the kids to really see that plants take up water! To make it even more interesting, you can divide the stem in half and place each half in different colours. Very cool! Mini garden worlds I have written about this one before, but it is a personal favourite of my children’s, so here it is again. Be it a dinosaur’s domain or a fairy garden, all you have to do to begin is get a tray with drainage holes or a large pot and fill it with soil. Then collect some small plants, rocks and sticks from around the garden and arrange them around a little creek bed or a rock cave in the tray. Now for the fun additions kids! Collect up some toy dinosaurs, fairies, cars or animals and add them to your mini garden and have fun playing in your little mini world! Of course animal toys will also need their own grass to eat which can be added by sprinkling mustard or alfalfa seeds on any bare soil and then keeping it moist. Build a PeaPea Otherwise known as a tepee made with peas! Prepare the soil around the edge of a circle approximately one meter in diameter by digging in some compost and a scattering of lime. Then to make the trellis, place some tall bamboo stakes around the inside of the circle, about 20 cm apart, and tie them altogether at the top. Remember to leave room for a door too! Finally, plant in some high climbing pea seeds, such as telegraph peas, in damp soil every 10 cm around the edge. Refrain from watering until they sprout to avoid causing the seed to rot. There will be one major problem to be aware of however…and that is that you may never beat the little kiddy pests that love to dwell in the PeaPea and eat the delicious peas! Yet that is the most joyous Ph: 5439 0999 Fax: 5439 0077 part of gardening with paintplacebeerwah@tpg.com.au kids, they get to explore 1/28 Simpson St, Beerwah Q. 4519 and become immersed in nature and all its healthy bounty. Calling all downhill racers It was all downhill for specialist downhill mountain bike racers last Sunday – in the best possible way. A new, International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) graded black diamond track – the Hennessey Hill Downhill Mountain Bike Track – was opened at Beerburrum this weekend, with action via a leg of the Sunshine Series Mountain Bike Race providing an action-packed debut for the track. “This will be the first downhill mountain bike track on the coast,” Recreational Trail Reference Group chair, Cr Debbie Blumel said. “The track is about 1.2 kilometres long, running parallel with Beerburrum-Woodford Road and incorporates jumps, drop-offs, rock gardens, steep banked berms, technical turns and obstacles.” Cr Blumel congratulated council-appointed designer Peter Wilson from Trailworx who undertook extensive work on the track to upgrade

it from what was an informal bike track dating back to 2004. “IMBA track ratings include five levels of difficulty: easiest, easy, more difficult, very difficult and extremely difficult – so the track called Hennessey Hill Downhill Mountain Bike Track is for experienced riders only,” she said. Divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz is delighted the track was opened last weekend. “D’Aguilar Range Cycling Club has conducted working bees to help with the development of the track, with fantastic results,” she said. “The track is named after the Hennesseys which, in 1878, was one of the first four non-indigenous families to settle in the Delaneys Creek area. “Over the past 130 years, the Hennessey family has added richness to the history of this region as pioneers, leaders and locals.” The Hennessey downhill track is a 100 per cent council-funded project, Cr Grosskreutz said.

Beerwah Bulldogs Contributed by Dean Roberts

Bribie travelled up to Beerwah last Sunday and we knew they would be desperate to play well and register their first wins of the season. Our Under 18’s did not play to their potential but still did enough to win 26-22 but will need to be fully focused when they play Noosa next Sunday. Reserve Grade once again let the opposition get away from them in the first half and then produced some good footy in the second half to go down 30-18 A Grade saw a see sawing affair which turned into a nail biter at the end with the Warrigals kicking a field goal with only seconds on the clock to win 27-26. A-Grade Bribie Is Warrigals – 27 – (Luke Snow 1, Paul McKewin 1, Samson Hookey 2, Ben GlynnArmstrong 1 – Tries)(Morgan Adams 3 – Goals) (Morgan Adams – 1 – Field Goals) def Beerwah Bulldogs – 26 – (Daniel Grice 1, Scott Hirst 1, Neil Geritz 1, Jamie Newton 1 – Tries)(Lachlan Pill 5 – Goals) Reserve Grade Bribie Is Warrigals – 30 – (Matt Body 1, George Hartshorn 1, Ricky O’Connor 1, Luke Gillette 1, Dallas Law 2 – Tries)(Ricky O’Connor 1, Evan

We look forward to seeing all the Bulldogs supporters come along and offer their support. Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by Trevor Bertram

Our Men’s Games Director, John McSwain was elected ‘life member’, in recognition of services rendered to the Club, at the Quarterly General Meeting on May 28. At the meeting, Terry Little (Chairman), on behalf of the 2011 Management Committee and members, formally thanked John for his outstanding efforts and service to the Club over the years and wished him many more years of healthy and happy bowling. In the semi-final of the 2011 Ladies’ triples Competition last Wednesday, M Lehmann, A Howard and M Duff defeated C Freshwater, M Bertram and M Freshwater and D Hunt, R Farrell and J Lawson defeated D Wells, L Little and K White. The final will be played on Wednesday, June 15 as our monthly Jackpot Triples is on this week. Thursday’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won jointly by C Sinton and B Richardson, and also D Hunt and R Farrell (one game each) with 2 + 21. The runners-up were K and M Duff who won the Winners of the Losers in Game 2 with a + 4. On Sunday we had a visit-in by the Police Bowls Club who played Glasshouse in the inaugural ‘Iona’ Challenge. Forty-two players enjoyed the afternoon of Mixed Triples which was won by the Police 155 to 129. Prizes were ‘out of the hat’ and thanks go to Liz and Terry Little for sponsoring the day. The Bowls Bonanza will resume this Saturday with a 10.00am start. The format is three games of 12 ends with a barbecue lunch after the first game. This is a good way for our newer bowlers to meet other members as the teams are randomly drawn. Don’t forget the annual Hibiscus Resort Visit-In / State of Origin on Sunday, June 19, with a 1.00pm start. The event will be Queenslanders v/s The Rest. The qualification for a Queenslander is ‘that you must have played your first game in Queensland’.
