Over the past couple of weeks since we have been sharing the news of the changes we have been making at GC&M News, we have had some wonderful feedback and support from so many people across our communities, which has been amazing.

While we generally don’t like to blow our own trumpet, I think our whole team has been really humbled by the response we have received by so many different people in our community - from our advertisers, our regular contributors and so many of our readers.

While not everyone is happy that this change from hard copy newspaper is being forced upon them, particularly those that don’t participate in an online environment, most people have been really understanding and supportive.

It has been so heartening to see how important people feel it is to stay connected to their community, and GC&M News is definitely dedicated to that.

We have even heard of some locals who will now be reading the stories from the paper out to the family and friends. I imagine the weekly joke will definitely be a winner for these readers, so please, if you have a good joke make sure you email it through to editorial@gcnews.com.au

We have also started working our way through plenty of ideas/suggestions that readers have been coming up with. As they say, two heads are better than one, so with more than 20,000 people who read the paper each week, we are confident that there will be a steady stream of different approaches to our delivery as well as content.

As much in our community has pretty much come to a standstill, we are definitely going to have to incorporate a range of new regular features which we will start promoting and encouraging locals to get involved with.

Local News Local government results still alive The local government elections may seem insignificant in today’s environment of upheaval, but for 18 local candidates (four Mayoral, four Division 1 and ten Division 5) the wait for a result is ongoing.

The final postal votes are being counted after the April 7, 5pm cut off for them to be received by the Electoral Commission of Queensland, and preference allocation will most likely commence after that.

Nevertheless, there appears to be a clear result in the race to be the Mayor, with incumbent Mark Jamieson (on 49%) well ahead of nearest rival Chris Thompson (33%). Mark Burgess and Donald Innes have respectively recorded 10% and 6% of the vote.

The same is likely in the Division 1 election, with incumbent Rick Baberowski sitting at 49% and holding a considerable lead over Jenny Broderick on 29%.

The two remaining candidates, Mark Davis (11%) and Raelene Ellis (9%), are out of the running.

Commenting on social media, Rick thanked the community for putting their trust in him for another term.

“The result will not be officially confirmed for another week or so, but I will be working through that time in my role as the current councillor,” wrote Rick.

“I hope the new council can be finalised soon so that we can work on putting together a package of measures to help the community.”

The contest for Division 5 is very different and remains on a knife-edge.

The two frontrunners are neck and neck, with around 560 votes separating Winston Johnston (3,768; 25.96%) and Tracy Burton (3,208; 22.1%), with none of the other eight candidates reaching double percentage figures.

Both leading candidates remain confident.

Tracy Burton commented on social media that it was a strong result for the Queensland Greens.

“It's too close to call so now we wait,” wrote Tracy.

“Huge heartfelt thanks to my team for such a dedicated, grassroots effort.”

With such a close result, Winston acknowledges that the allocation of preferences will be crucial.

“I have been reliably informed that a significant majority of votes showed no preference allocation,” said Winston.

“However, I can only win if less than 23% of voters showed a second or subsequent preference. This is a distinct possibility.

“It may be well after Easter before we know the official result and even then, if the result is close a recount may be requested by either the Tracy or myself.”

Anzac Day Visual commemoration of ANZAC Day

Recently GC&M News was contacted by Raylee Morton who works in Beerwah and is concerned about the cancellation of ANZAC Day commemorations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

She had been wondering what we could all do to honour and show our respect to the diggers and those who have served and sacrificed their lives for our freedom and lifestyle - without being able to leave our homes.

Raylee said she heard about the ABC radio broadcast at 6am on ANZAC Day, but wondered if this was the best we could do even in these restricted days.

“The idea I have come up with is based on the ‘tie a yellow ribbon on the ole oak tree’ principle but with purple, I thought purple as they use purple ribbon on ANZAC wreaths,” she said.

“We could encourage people at home to get involved by tying purple ribbons or homemade streamers to their fences, balconies, trees, gates, cars or in their window(s).

“We can also get the kids involved, particularly as the kids are home from school, they could make streamers or get arty or crafty, drawing colour pictures and / or traditional symbols of ANZAC such as the poppy (red or purple), slouch hat, poppy wreath, flame of remembrance or the riderless horse for their front yard.”

The added benefit of this project is that it can keep everyone busy while learning about the history of the ANZACs and families can share what they have learned with each other on April 25.

Raylee encourages businesses that are open to also get involved by printing purple ANZAC Day "Lest we forget" posters and placing them in their office / shop windows.

Raylee said she found this ANZAC Day quote online which was very apt, it reads: “This is a day not of celebration but of national memory.

It’s a day when we learn, and learn again, of the horror of purposeless war. It is a day for looking after your mates, cherishing your home, your neighbourhood and family. It’s a day for realising how rare this wonderful country of ours is and how precious it is.”

Raylee said that being able to do something positive and meaningful to honour the fighting spirit of the ANZACs and the Australian and New Zealanders since who have served and died defending our freedom would lift the spirits of all Australians by bringing our spirits together in remembrance – while protecting our most cherished and vulnerable by staying apart.

“It is important to involve our children and grandchildren by giving them a special project like this,” she added, suggesting that on ANZAC Day at 6am when we stand at the end of our driveway or on our balconies and listen to the ABC radio broadcast the children can, at the appropriate time, place their tribute - poppies, streamers or posters whatever they have made - on their mailbox, gate or fence.

Acknowledging ANZAC Day at Landsborough Kindy in 2018 of their fallen, family who have served or are currently serving, and share it through social media, and send it to GC&M News so we can report on who we acknowledged the event as a community.

Raylee also suggested that as a family you make some ANZAC biscuits or play the children’s version of Two-up.

‘Light Up The Dawn’ State Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle, has asked Caloundra and Hinterland residents to join him to ‘Light Up The Dawn’ from their home in honour of Australian veterans this ANZAC Day at 6am on Saturday April 25.

It comes as RSLs across the country recently made the difficult decision to cancel their ANZAC Day gatherings in response to the COVID-19 situation.

“In the coming months, so many important events are going to look very different from previous years and sadly, the great Australian tradition of honouring our diggers on ANZAC Day is one such event which has been impacted by this health crisis,” Mr McArdle said.

“Right now our connection to each other, to our past, to the people who fought for our freedom, and to our ‘ANZAC spirit’, is something that will help us all weather this storm, together.

“While we cannot physically come together at dawn services in the community, RSL Queensland has asked us to honour our diggers in a different way.

“Stand at the end of your driveway, on your balcony or in your living room, tune into RSL QLD's live stream from your smart phone or computer to watch the commemorative service and come together in spirit to remember all those who have served and sacrificed for our country.

“I would also encourage everyone who does participate to share a photo of themselves online with #lightupthedawn.

“If we all participate from home in the same way, and tune into the live stream online where possible, we can still share the collective experience of ANZAC Day in a moving and meaningful way,” Mr McArdle concluded.

ANZAC biscuits

Glass House Mountains local Amanda Smyth from the ‘Cooker and a Looker’ blog is dedicated to serving everyday real food for real people: fresh, easy recipe ideas for nourishing families and effortlessly entertaining friends.

She recently explained that the traditional Australian biscuits earned their name because they were sent overseas to soldiers in World War I. Lacking butter and eggs, the biscuits kept well and made it to the front line without spoiling.

Amanda’s recipe Ingredients 1 cup oats 125g butter 1 cup plain flour 1 cup sugar ¾ cup coconut

2 tbs golden syrup ½ tsp bicarb of soda 1 tbs boiling water Method Combine oats, flour, sugar and coconut. Combine butter and golden syrup, stir over gentle heat until melted. Mix bicarb and boiling water, add to butter mixture. Stir into dry ingredients. Place tablespoons of the mixture onto a greased baking tray and bake for 20 minutes at 150C. COVID-19 information Some of the State Government restrictions in Queensland explained

Home confinement, movement and gatherings

Under the new Home Confinement, Movement and Gatherings Direction from Queensland Health Department, you should not leave your home unless absolutely necessary for the following permitted reasons: • obtain essential goods and services • receive medical treatment or health care services • exercise, either alone or with one other person or those who reside in the same household • do work or volunteering that is essential and cannot be done from home • visit another person’s house, as long as there are no more than two people who are not ordinarily members of that household • visit a terminally ill relative or attend a funeral • assist, care for or support immediate family members or close friends • attend Court or comply with a Court order • attend a childcare facility, school, university, or other educational institution to receive instruction that is not possible to receive at home • assist with an investigation by police or other law enforcement authority • all shared custody arrangements of children under 18 years of age, whether informal or court-ordered, can continue as normal. You are allowed to leave the house to take children from one parent’s home to the other parent’s home • avoid illness, injury or the risk of harm

• comply with directions of a government agency.

If you do need to leave your home for one of these permitted reasons, you may do so with members of your household, or with one person who is not a member of your household, and you should keep your distance from others (1.5 metres).

Wash or sanitise your hands regularly.

QLD Health urge people aged over 70, anybody over 60 with a chronic disease, and Indigenous people over 50 to stay at home for their own protection.

If you require assistance to go out, you can be accompanied by more than one person who is not a member of your household, for example a person with a disability may be accompanied by more than one carer.

Closure of non-essential businesses and activities Queensland Health through a Closure Direction, and in line with the Federal Government and all States and Territories have determined that a long list of businesses, facilities and activities are to cease. Here is a shortlist of some to be aware of (exemptions are included in brackets): • Cafes, restaurants, fast-food outlets, food courts (takeaway service and home delivery can remain operational. Services providing food or drink to the homeless, with social distancing, can continue) • Real estate auctions and open house inspections (private appointments only for inspections)

• Outdoor and indoor markets (at the moment food markets and farmers markets may continue to operate) • Hairdressers and barber shops (can remain operational with no more than one person per four square metres, with social distancing observed to the extent possible) • Beauty therapy, tanning, waxing and nail salons, and tattoo parlours • Registered and licensed clubs, licensed premises in hotels (bottle shops and off license premises attached to venues may continue to operate, with social distancing observed.

Limited to two people for outdoor sporting- based activities, eg golf and tennis) • Cinemas, nightclubs, concert venues, theatres, arenas, auditoriums, stadiums • Theme parks, amusement parks and amusement arcades • Play centres, indoor and outdoor • Community and recreation centres (facilities may remain open for the purpose of hosting essential voluntary or public services, such as food banks or homeless services) • Boot camps, personal training (limited to two people including the personal trainer, with social distancing observed) • Indoor sporting centres, including gyms, health clubs, fitness centres, yoga • Social sporting-based activities (limited to two people) • Swimming pools including public pools and

pools in shared facilities such as hotels and apartments (excluding pools in private residences) • Public playgrounds, skate parks, BMX tracks and outside gyms • Public barbeques • Caravan and camping parks (where people live permanently in caravan parks or are staying in caravan parks as interim abodes where their primary residence is not available, they may continue to do so) • Zoos and wildlife centres (for the purpose of maintenance and care for the animals) • Galleries, museums, national and state institutions, historic sites, libraries, community centres, community halls and youth centres • Places of worship, weddings and funerals (weddings with a maximum attendance of five people. Funerals attended by a maximum of ten people)

Indoor and outdoor gatherings restrictions

In an attempt to manage the risk of spreading the virus, you are now only allowed out of your house for particular reasons.

Visiting another person’s house is allowed, but this is limited to a maximum of two other people who are not ordinarily members of that household, if social distancing is practiced.

Visiting someone else’s house should be restricted only to what is necessary – for example your adult children who live out of home (but only two of them) or if you need to seek support from a close

friend or family member during this time.

The limit of two people in a house who are unrelated to the household is not affected by someone attending a person’s house to work (for example a cleaner, a nanny, or tradesperson).

This means, for example, three tradespeople could be at your house to do repairs, and you can still have a close friend at your house, with your regular household members.

You are allowed to go to the beach only for exercise – walking, swimming, surfing, paddle boarding, etc. You are not allowed to sit and read, sunbake or sit while the kids play.

Not following any of these regulations without reasonable excuse is a breach of the Public Health Act 2005 and you may be fined up to $1,330 for individuals and $6,670 for corporations.

Queensland border closure

To slow the spread of the coronavirus, the Queensland Government is tightening restricted entry into Queensland.

New restrictions now apply from Friday April 3 which will only allow Queensland residents and those considered an ‘exempt person’ to cross the border.

Restrictions preventing interstate FIFO workers (except for certain positions in certain resource industries) apply as well.

These restrictions continue to provide for the continuation of essential goods and services for Queenslanders.

Only Queensland residents and those considered an ‘exempt person’ will be allowed to enter Queensland.

If you are a Queensland resident returning to Queensland from overseas, you must selfquarantine for 14 days.

If you are a Queensland resident returning from any other place in Australia that is not a declared COVID-19 hotspot you do not have to enter selfquarantine.

Those people moving to Queensland to take up permanent residence will be allowed to enter, but will also be required to self-quarantine for 14 days, which could be at the new residential address.

There are categories of people who are exempted from the restrictions. These relate to people are who provide critical services to Queensland, and some compassionate exemptions. A full list of these can be found on the QLD Health website.

Some examples include freight transport, essential health services, some boarder community residents and some FIFO workers.

To enter Queensland, an entry pass will be required which can be applied for through the QLD Health website.

COVID-19 information Some of the State Government restrictions in Queensland explained cont.

Education Early childhood education and care Early childhood education and care facilities are considered crucial to continuing the education of our children, and to enable Queenslanders to continue to work and support the broader community.

Community kindergartens are student free from Monday March 30.

Community kindergartens will remain open for families of essential workers and children experiencing vulnerability during the student free days only.

Long day care Long day care will remain open as normal, including long day care services who offer an approved kindergarten program.

All other education and care services such as family day care and outside school hours care will remain open unless advised by Queensland Health.

Schools Schools are closed for term break from Saturday April 4 until Sunday April 19.

Term two will commence Monday April 20 unless health advice determines otherwise, and Queensland schools have been preparing materials for flexible learning should students need to remain at home.

Higher Education Universities continue to move operations online and introduce flexible tuition options as part of the enormous national effort to slow community transmission of COVID-19, as well as protecting those most vulnerable to the pandemic.

Due to the current ban on non-essential indoor gatherings, universities have planned for a wide range of contingencies, including restrictions on internal gatherings, and have announced immediate, practical changes.

Vocational Education and Training Vocational Education and Training (VET) covers a wide range of careers and industries, including trade and office work, retail, hospitality and technology.

You will need to visit your local VET provider’s website to confirm if it remains open.

In many cases, VETs are transitioning courses to digital delivery. However, due to the practical and/or technical nature of their programs, this may not be possible in all situations.

Popular areas in National Parks closure A range of national park facilities have been closed across the state, including the closure of campgrounds to help contain the spread of COVID-19 and align with actions already taken by other states and territories.

The Queensland Minister for Environment, Leeanne Enoch, said that the decision will also help to ensure community wellbeing, as well as protect the health and safety of QPWS rangers.

“Increased signage will be in place to inform the public of closures, but locals should check park alerts online for the most up-to-date information about closures,” Minister Enoch said.

“Queenslanders should only be using national parks and forests which are close to their own home and they should observe all social distancing guidelines. If we continue to see breaches of the Chief Health Officers’ directions, we will be forced to close more park areas.”

Community News Neighbourhood / Community Centres' update Emergency relief at Morris House Contributed by Ann Husband As with most of the other Neighbourhood/ Community Centres in our area, most of our usual services have been suspended.

However, we are still assisting people with emergency relief which is available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. To get help, call us on 5494 1255 - if the phone is temporarily unattended, there is a message on the phone with instructions for accessing help.

Leave your name, phone number and tell us what help you require and we will return your call and give you an appointment time to pick up food etc.

Please bring your own bags if you require food.

You will also need to bring ID - this can be a Centrelink card or a drivers licence. Please note that Centrelink clients no longer have to provide a Centrelink statement. We can provide the following emergency relief: non-perishable food items, bread, some perishable food, Woolworths food vouchers, Telstra phone vouchers, PBS prescriptions, Go Cards and Go Card top ups.

Please note, we have not got any toilet paper!

We also do No Interest Loans (NILS) if you need help with a new appliance etc.

Pressure off Unitywater customers

Unitywater has announced changes to support customers through the COVID-19 pandemic.

The utility has announced that for the next six months, it will be extending bill due dates from 30 days to 60 days and will not be charging interest on overdue bills. Customers do not need to do anything - both changes will happen automatically.

Unitywater chairman Jim Soorley said they were working to help customers wherever possible.

“We are very mindful of the current situation and the pressure it’s placing on families and businesses across our service area,” he said.

“We have introduced some automatic changes to help ease what is, in some cases, a very stressful and uncertain time.

“We know that some customers are facing financial challenges and we encourage any customers who may be having trouble paying their bill to contact us as soon as possible so that we can help them.”

Mr Soorley said the Unitywater changes supplemented the Queensland Government’s relief package, which is giving households $200 to help with utility bills.

“The Queensland Government’s $200 credit is designed to alleviate electricity and water bills,” he said.

Business News McKenzie Aged Care changing the way they communicate

Units for old church site

Back in 2018, Church on the Rise purchased the old Beerwah RSL site to relocate their church facilities from their long-term home at 68-70 Peachester Road in Beerwah.

In late 2018, the two blocks – one with the church building and the adjoining block comprising a dwelling and offices – were sold to development company Altum Properties No 6 Pty Ltd. The combined 3,700sqm land parcel is attractive to a developer, as the land is earmarked for medium density residential, although the church land is still zoned as Community Facilities.

Late in 2019, Altum applied to Council to build 19 two-bedroom units on the land, which is a consistent use of lands in the surrounding areas.

Council flagged concerns with the unit development being inconsistent with the Community Facilities zoning on one of the blocks, telling the applicant that while Council acknowledges that the church has relocated, the proposed redevelopment of the site will effectively sterilise this Community Facilities zoned land and will reduce the overall provision of this opportunity in Beerwah.

The applicant argued that the “…historical use rights and zoning recognition does not necessarily correlate to sound land use allocation or community need. The site is an isolated Community Facilities zoning located within a residential area. The relocation and sale of the land by Church on the Rise confirms the land is no longer required for place of worship purposes.”

Council accepted this response and has allowed the application to proceed to the next stage of public notification and submissions.

Interested parties now have until April 21 to submit a submission on the proposed development to Council.

Aldi parking goes undercover The Aldi store in Beerwah is looking to provide a better shopping experience for locals with plans approved through Council to erect shade structures over many of their car parking spaces.

After the store’s extension in 2017, 16 additional spaces were created, taking the total to 81 car parking spaces available for Aldi shoppers.

With a recent approval amendment granted by Council, Aldi plan to construct shade covers over 51 of the 81 car parking spaces.

According to the planning documents, the shade structures are lightweight, curved and have a fairly typical appearance commonly seen in shopping centre car parks.

Maleny Jewellers are this month celebrating their platinum anniversary, with the retail business, owned by Sandra and Jim Goulton reaching a milestone twenty years in business.

While their original plans for the celebration have been put on hold as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it hasn’t stopped them smiling and celebrating ‘virtually’ with their Facebook followers.

On March 31 Jim and team member Janis completed the first of their video segments announcing the first of twenty competitions that they would be running with a great prize up for grabs.

In a message shared online, business co-owner Sandra has thanked her staff, family and the community over the years for their support.

You may have also heard that, sadly, in what should have been Maleny Jewellers month of celebrations they have been the victim of a robbery early on Monday morning.

Two men wearing hoodies and gloves broke into the store and took $20,000 worth of stock.

While Jim and Sandra are really disappointed that their business should be targeted in this way, they are keen to assure their customers that the items stolen were stock and not repairs or personal items which were locked away in their safe and have been untouched.

They have also thanked the community for their support in this time.

COVID-19 Help and Assistance Federal Government Financial Support Support for individuals and households Accessing JobSeekeer The Government has made it easier for more people to get the JobSeeker payment.

Before the most recent announcement, people were ineligible if their partner earned more than about $48,000 per year. That's now been increased to nearly $80,000.

JobKeeper payment for employees The JobKeeper payment helps businesses significantly impacted by COVID-19 cover the costs of their employees’ wages so more Australians can retain their jobs and continue to earn an income. Your employer will notify you if they intend to claim the fortnightly payment of $1,500 on your behalf. https://treasury.gov.au/sites/default/files/2020-04/ Fact_sheet_Info_for_Employees.pdf Income support for individuals Over the next six months, the Government is temporarily expanding eligibility to income support payments and establishing a new, timelimited Coronavirus Supplement to be paid at a rate of $550 per fortnight. This will be paid to both existing and new recipients of JobSeeker Payment, Youth Allowance Jobseeker, Parenting Payment, Farm Household Allowance and Special Benefit. https://treasury.gov.au/sites/default/files/2020-03/ Fact_sheet-Income_Support_for_Individuals_0.pdf Payments to support households The Government is providing two separate $750 payments to social security, veteran and other income support recipients and eligible concession card holders. As of May 1, the upper deeming rate will be 2.25% and the lower deeming rate will be 0.25%. The reductions reflect the low interest rate environment and its impact on the income from savings. Parents who are currently sending their kids to child care will be able to do so without paying fees.

Depending on availability, the deal covers parents still working during the pandemic, parents working from home, parents who are looking for work and parents who are studying.

The Early Childhood Education and Care Relief Package will see weekly payments will be made directly to early childhood education and care services in lieu of the Child Care Subsidy and the Additional Child Care Subsidy, to help them keep their doors open and employees in their jobs.

Payments will be made until the end of the 2019-20 financial year and families will not be charged fees during this time. These payments will complement the JobKeeper payment.

Jobs Hub While many businesses have been adversely affected by COVID-19 and are reducing their workforces, there are some areas of the economy which have an increased demand for workers.

This includes jobs in health and care sectors, transport and logistics, some areas of retail, mining and mining services, manufacturing, agriculture and government sectors, among others.

In response, the Federal Government have created Jobs Hub – a website portal to connect job seekers with job creators.

Support for businesses JobKeeper payment Under the JobKeeper Payment, businesses significantly impacted by COVID-19 will be able to access a subsidy from the Government to continue paying their employees. This assistance will help businesses to keep people in their jobs and re-start when the crisis is over.

The package also includes temporary relief for directors from any personal liability for trading while insolvent, and providing temporary flexibility in the Corporations Act 2001 to provide temporary and targeted relief from provisions of the Act to deal with unforeseen events that arise as a result of the COVID-19 health crisis.

Support for COVID-19 affected regions and communities The Government has set aside $1 billion to support regions most significantly affected by COVID-19. These funds will be available to assist during the outbreak and the recovery. The programs are: • Support for immediate cash flow needs for SMEs. • Quick and efficient access to credit for small business.

• Reserve Bank of Australia – supporting the flow and reducing the cost of credit.

• Support for Non-Authorised Deposit-Taking Institutions (ADI’s) and smaller ADI lenders in the securitisation market.

• Australian Prudential Regulation Authority ensuring banks are well placed to lend.

Qld Government Financial Support The Queensland Government worker and industry support package includes: • Up to $500 million to assist workers who lose their job or income with retraining, job-matching and other help to transition into jobs in the industries that are vital to get Queensland through this crisis – such as health care, agriculture, food production, transport, cleaning and mining.

• Industry Support Package. The Industry Support Package will assist large businesses through this period to ensure they will be able to scale up and service the community when economic activity improves. • $500 rebate on electricity bills for all Queensland small and medium sized businesses that consume less than 100,000 kilowatt hours - this will be automatically applied to electricity bills.

• Liquor licensing fees waived for business impacted by enforced safety industry shutdowns.

• $200 rebate for all 2.1 million Queensland households to offset the cost of water and electricity bills, automatically applied through household electricity bills.

• $1.2 billion for health. This funding boost will increase the capacity of Queensland’s health system to confront COVID-19 and includes the expansion of: fever clinics, emergency department capacity, acute care services, regional aeromedical services for our remote communities.

• Payroll Tax Relief. All small and medium businesses (payroll up to $6.5M) in Queensland will be eligible for: a two-month refund of payroll tax, giving an average of nearly $9,000

cash; a three-month payroll tax holiday, saving an average of $13,360. In addition, they will be eligible to defer all payroll tax payments for the rest of 2020. Larger businesses (payroll over $6.5M) affected by COVID-19 will also be eligible for the two-month payroll tax refund and have their deferral extended for all of 2020.

Local Government Assistance Support available from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council includes: • Rates update - Council will be communicating with everyone who has outstanding rates that, if they are experiencing financial difficulty, council will work with them to make a suitable arrangement that takes into account their circumstances. Council will also not be charging interest on outstanding rate payments and will not be pursuing outstanding rates at this time.

• Economic stimulus package - to keep money circulating in the local economy and work flowing for the construction and related industries, council will be accelerating programmed maintenance and other works in a number of its facilities while they are closed as a result of complying with public health directions. Council is also currently reviewing its Capital Works Program to identify opportunities to bring forward approved and budgeted projects, as a further measure to support the local economy and businesses.

• Additional support for businesses - Council will contact affected businesses to discuss the following additional support measures and the reviewed fees and charges: • dedicated staff to assess temporary use permits; • additional staff focused on building and plumbing approvals to ensure continuity of work/approvals; • relaxation of curfews in relation to deliveries of essential items to supermarkets/pharmacies; • reimbursing/waiving a range of permit and licence fees; • payment of Infrastructure Charges for MCU developments will be assisted through a Staged Payment process up to three years, complemented with the initial payment being deferred between 6-9 months (interest free); • parking regulators will issue warnings instead of infringements in general unless the infringement relates to health and safety issues or parking in disabled parking space; • -paid parking waiver for Caloundra from March 31 to June 30.

• Expediting payments - Sunshine Coast Council will be injecting up to $15 million per month into the local economy by expediting payments to local contractors in a bid to improve cash flow and stem the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

• Wellbeing support - business owners and employees can log in to the free B-Well and Prosper portal available via the council's website (https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ Business/Business-Programs/B-Well-and Prosper) to provide mental wellbeing support during this difficult time. • Funding finder - businesses can also log on to Sunshine Coast funding finder (https://sunshinecoast.grantguru.com.au/) to see what grants are available to support you.

• Permits - for event operators with approved

permits and current applications through Sunshine Coast Council, permit fees will be credited for up to 12 months, please liaise with your community land permit contact.

• Free online courses - Many businesses are having to change the way they do business, with more outlets going online, using video for meetings and offering delivery. If you or your employees want to update your online skills you can access a free online course - Level Up (https://levelup.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ level-up-program/).

Other Assistance Moratorium on evictions for renters In an as yet unspecified approach, the National Cabinet are working on a plan to stop renters from being evicted for non-payment of rent due to COVID-19 financial strains.

The principles are being worked on for commercial tenancies, and discussions are continuing which would see that expanded to include residential tenancies.

The moratorium is planned to be in place for the next six months.

Banks to help commercial landlords to help tenants The Australian Banking sector has agreed new measures to provide some relief to businesses in distress.

Businesses with total business loan facilities of up to $10 million will now be able to defer repayments for loans attached to their business for six months.

During this period, banks have also agreed to not enforce business loans for non-financial breaches of the loan contract (such as changes in valuations). Businesses with total loans of more than $10 million may also be eligible for relief, but this will need to be considered on a case by case basis.

While businesses will not have to make any principal or interest payments for the 6 months, interest will continue to be accrued. It can then be paid off over the life of the loan once repayments begin again, or the length of the loan can be extended. This will be a case by case negotiation between the business.

In order to be eligible for this relief the following conditions apply: • Commercial property landlords must provide an undertaking to the bank that for the period of the deferral, they will not terminate leases or evict current tenants for rent arrears as a result of COVID-19; • The business must be affected by COVID-19; and • The business must have been current in terms of existing facilities for 90 days prior to applying.

Freezing your mortgage The four big banks, and other smaller lenders, have announced plans to allow their customers to pause mortgage payments for a period of time to help them cope with financial stresses.

Check with your financial institution or mortgage broker to find out what your bank is offering … and the catches.

One common thread is that the approach is to defer the interest payments, rather than suspend them. Meaning that the total loan will grow by the amount of interest which would have been paid.

Energex has launched a new free SMS notification service to keep customers informed about power outages, as Queenslanders are advised to stay close to home in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

General manager customer and market operations Cloe Kernick said they understand many customers need to be kept up-to-date on any interruptions to their power supply - whether it’s an emergency outage or for critical network maintenance.

“You can now subscribe for SMS and email notifications for a range of services at energex.com.au/selfservice and starting this week we’ll be sending out text messages inviting customers to subscribe,” Cloe said.

In the case of unplanned outages, customers will receive a text message with a link to outage information on Energex’s website, which is updated when crews know more about the cause and duration.

“You’ll also receive a text message when the power at your property has been restored, which is handy for people who are still required to work away from their homes at this time,” he added.

While customers will continue to receive written notifications, SMS notifications will also be available for planned outages, which are necessary to allow crews to work safely on the electricity network when they are doing routine maintenance, replacing equipment and upgrading poles and wires.

“We’ll let you know about a planned outage via a text five days in advance so you can plan ahead and you’ll receive the SMS reminder on the day your power is scheduled to be switched off.”

Energex’s 24/7 online Customer Self Service allows customers to submit self-meter reads and report a problem, including loss of supply, faulty street lights, trees in powerlines, and graffiti or vandalism that impacts the electricity network.

By Sonia Clark Did you know as well as access to thousands of interesting books, music, movies, and online learning and tutorial resources through our Sunshine Coast Libraries, the State Library of Queensland also offers a veritable wealth of online interest and knowledge at your fingertips.

Becoming a State Library member is free and super easy, giving you immediate access to an incredible selection of digital resources. Signing up takes about a minute, with the hardest part thinking of a password that would be easily remembered!

Once connected it’s a simple case of using the ‘One Search’ library catalogue to be able to access books, journals, newspapers, movies and more.

Book worms will get excited, as there are over 200,000 ebooks in the collection which can easily be read online using an internet browser or downloaded to your personal mobile device. All subject areas are covered except popular fiction and reference material. Also, as part of the library’s commitment to making Queensland’s memory more accessible, hundreds of additional books have been digitised to enjoy from the convenience of your lounge.

For those wishing to access databases, the State Library allows members to connect with a fantastic range of material including journal articles, newspapers, company and industry data, reference material and more.

Featured databases include access to PressReader which connects users with today’s news from over 7,000 publications, from 120 countries and in 60+ languages.

There is also ProQuest Central which is a multidisciplinary database covering a range of interests, and for the more scholarly inclined, JSTOR

which offers access to a massive archive of informative journals with topics ranging from language, literature and economics, to religion, ecology, performing and visual arts.

One of the best online tools though is the free access to the elearning and training platform Lynda.com. Through the State Library membership, users gain free reign to this great learning resource that provides over 13,000 courses and tutorials, including tutorials on how to use and navigate current technology such as Windows 10, Office 365.

For those wanting to learn more about how to better connect digitally, or to use software or apps that may assist them with online/video chat with loved ones, a free tutorial through Lynda.com may be the easy way to learn how to get virtually connected with friends and family.

Classic films and documentaries are also available through the membership using the Kanopy ondemand streaming video platform. Showcasing over 30,000 of the world’s best films, including award-winning and film festival favourites, this impressive online collection includes a wide range of foreign language films and material of cultural value. Many films available on Kanopy are difficult to find elsewhere making this a wonderful resource for movie buffs, students and those wanting more a little than the usual Netflix movies.

By Sonia Clark With steps to reduce the spread of COVID-19 changing the way people currently shop for their food, it has been heartening to see many of our local fresh produce and grocery suppliers adapting their business models to meet demand, and to continue their service safely to the community.

Speaking with local suppliers it is evident that more customers are embracing the online and contactless delivery options as a new way to navigate through these rapidly changing times.

For those committed to staying at home and heeding current health directives, to have your groceries delivered seems like an easy no fuss option – plus given the current social protocols it’s also, honestly, a bit exciting having the food shop brought to you, with the added bonus that you can do your weekly shopping in your pyjamas!

Thankfully, there are some things that never change and point them to our hope.

The Easter message remains a constant source of confidence in every season of life. The powerful symbols that come into focus at this time – a rugged cross and an empty tomb – offers that hope which is ‘an anchor for our soul'. Reverend Liena Hoffman Maleny Uniting Church “… and by his wounds we are healed” (Is 53:5) Easter is the heart of the Christian identity. The church, each follower of Christ is identified through the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. We need to show the wounds on our hands and feet. In times of disaster, like the COVID-19 pandemic, people ask “Where is God?” God is visible through the church. If people cannot see God in our marked hands and feet, where will they find God? We need to show we are resurrected people of the cross who carry the wounds to heal and bring hope to the world. Shalom Liena.

As we journey through Holy Week, we have been taken in a completely different direction to what we are used to. Instead of gathering in a building called Church, we, the Body of Christ (the Church) are scattered. Many are living alone, some are anxious and fearful for themselves and their loved ones of the COVID-19 virus.

Isolation can overwhelm us with the darkness of hopelessness, yet the Easter story is one of hope.

It reminds me of the story of the Four Candles: Peace, Faith, Love and Hope. Gradually the flames of Peace, Faith and Love die leaving the flame of Hope burning alone. A small boy asks “Why aren’t the other three candles burning?” The Hope candle replied “Don’t be afraid, I am Hope! While I still burn, I can light the other three candles.” The boy lights the candles of Peace, Faith and Love from the candle of Hope.

The risen Christ is the hope, which ignites peace, faith and love in our hearts and lives. This is the message of the Easter story that the tomb is empty and Jesus the Christ has risen, as the ‘Light of the world, a Light, which no darkness can overcome.”

The hope, peace, faith and love which is Christ cannot be snuffed out by the COVID-19 virus. May you live in the hope of the Empty Tomb! May this Easter bring you and those whom you love blessings of peace, faith, love and hope. Jesus Christ is Risen!

Rev Costa Stathakis Glasshouse Country Uniting Church We are kept well informed with details of COVID-19 and all its ramifications. We are very grateful for this; however, we must guard against having a single myopic view. Let us also look around at beautiful and uplifting things. Let us look up and not forget that Jesus warned us that we do not live in a perfect world, he said: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) I listened to Louis Armstrong singing “What a wonderful world”. It made me stop in my downcast tracks. We live in a beautiful country with amazing scenery, vegetation, plants and birdlife. The other thing that struck me, when I was willing to see and hear it, was the level of caring and self-sacrifice among human beings. Jesus said, “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34). I have seen this caring love, this sacrificial love all over the globe. People from all walks of life, different beliefs and philosophies banding together to serve humanity. Regardless of the cost to themselves.

The good news is that everything Christ came to accomplish for us and in our hearts, cannot be stolen away by circumstance.

Peace, Grace, Hope, Forgiveness, Strength, Freedom, and the promise to spend eternity in His Presence. (These are all ours in Christ) This Easter, pause to remember the unimaginable sacrifice Christ made for all of us before many witnesses.

Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Notice this verse says while we were sinners, and not ‘when we finally got our stuff together Christ Died for us’, but while we were in sin, he lifted us out of our sin. In other words when we least deserved it, emphasising we didn’t earn this love or grace.

When we think of a pit we can also think of a grave, yes, the grave where Jesus body lay three days. Jesus was raised from the dead, so that as folk who know in faith, Jesus as Lord and Saviour, we live in the sure and certain hope of our resurrection.

Our hope is in Jesus. Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! Because of his great mercy he gave us new life by raising Jesus from death. This fills us with a living hope, and so we look forward to possessing the rich blessings that God keeps for His people. He keeps them for you in heaven where they cannot decay or spoil or fade away. 1 Peter1:3-4

Charity Sports off for 2020 Charity Sports Committee members have been left with no alternative but to cancel the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival for 2020.

With the Government warning that the current restrictions on gatherings and activities could be in place for the next six months, this means that there is really no chance of holding our annual fundraising event for Cancer Council Queensland.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors, participants and supporters for their help over the last 48 years.

Hopefully by 2021 COVID-19 will be a distant memory and community life will be back to something like normal. We will be looking for your support to get the 49th Beerwah Charity Sports back on the road, and perhaps even eclipse our record 2019 total of $29,000 raised for this very important cause.

Glasshouse Country Care update GC&M News checked in with Glasshouse Country Care’s general manager, Clare Mullins, to see what has changed at Glasshouse Country Care.

Clare assures us that they are still open and providing a range of other services to support people during this difficult time.

“We are able to provide support to people over 65 who are not already on a ‘My Aged Care’ plan (CHSP) or a ‘Home Care Package’, for up to six weeks - if people need support beyond six weeks we will help them to get an assessment,” said Clare.

“For those already receiving support from us through a ‘My Aged Care’ plan (CHSP) or ‘Home Care Package’ we can provide additional support if a person’s circumstances have changed or they feel they need an extra bit of help.

“We can help with shopping and collecting prescriptions, and Meals on Wheels is included in the support and available for delivery at $6 per meal.

“Our staff are all trained in infection control and follow all government guidelines on social distancing when we deliver meals or shopping,” explained Clare who welcomed anyone wanting to discuss assistance or find out about other support available, to contact Glasshouse Country Care on 5494 6948.

Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker There was no play on the lawns this week mainly due to COVID-19 as people have been reluctant to venture out because of the warnings about transmission. All major tournaments have either been postponed or cancelled for the next couple of months. The club has made a decision in line with the new government restrictions, and also just common sense, that the lawns and facilities be closed until further notice. All coaching and play days will resume in time.

Hinterland Families Easter cover call out

Last week GC&M News put the call out to readers to send in photos they had that would make a great cover for this week’s Easter edition.

It was a really tough decision which photo to choose as the overall winner, as all these happy smiling faces reminded us what we love about Easter.

That’s right, who can go past a good set of bunny ears, cute rabbits, Easter eggs, Easter baskets, Easter egg hunts, chickens and hanging out with family.

So when we saw that Kellie from Maleny managed to incorporate pretty much every one of those elements in her photo we decided that she was the winner.

Bears bringing a smile to little people in Glasshouse Country

If you have been on Facebook in the last couple of weeks it is likely that you will already be aware of the global ‘bear hunt’ that is now underway.

Going for a walk with family members, for exercise, is still something that is allowed and some sneaky adults came up with a way of encouraging children to enjoy the experience a little more.

The idea is for neighbours to put teddy bears and other soft toys in windows, on trees, attached to fences and letterboxes and out on verandahs, so that kids can turn their walks into ‘bear hunts’.

Jaye Clase, a local early childhood educator,

thinks it is a great idea to brighten up children's days.

“Let's all brighten up the streets of our community, and if you go out for a walk today you might be in for a big surprise," Jaye said.

“It also warms my heart to know that it may bring smiles to the whole family.”

Jaye also suggested that we remind kids that social distancing still applies with the bears, so stay safe and no touching the bears.

GC&M News have been advised of sightings at properties in Beerwah and Glass House Mountains, so if you have a bear or a toy that

is currently locked up inside, you might want to free them or at least put them in your window so they can see outside and the kids can give them a wave.

The idea behind the concept was inspired by the children’s book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury, in which the characters sing: “We’re going on a bear hunt, we’re going to catch a big one - what a beautiful day, we’re not scared.’’

Hinterland Families Tips for home schooling with Donna Turner

Coping with change

By Sonia Clark Many parents are now exploring home schooling and online learning options for their children, and with the likelihood that term two is currently shaping up to involve supported learning at home, GC&M News thought we’d ask local mum, Donna Turner, for some practical tips for parents.

Donna is mum of three boys aged 12, 15 and 16 and is married to local Chaplain Mike Turner. She home schooled her youngest boy, Josh, for nearly two years and was happy to share some insights with readers.

Q: What does a typical home school day look like?

A: Routine would vary depending on the day, but we tried to do english/maths in the morning and art/history/science and sport in the afternoon. I found it helpful to have a schedule, but it was also good to be flexible too. So if you had lessons online at a set time, it was set, but if Josh got up early and was ready to go, we might work from 7am to 11am and have the days’ work done by early morning which then gave him time to go play. It really depends on the child and sometimes it works better to do 9am to 3pm like a school day, but for us it worked better getting in and doing in the morning when we were both fresh.

Q: What tips can you share with other parents/ carers from your experience?

Don’t sweat the small stuff and pick your battles!

If you are having a bad mental health day play catch outside, cook using measuring cups as fractions for maths – basically look for learning in the everyday. If you are struggling, then pick the main subjects that matter most and do them first. For us it was reading, writing and maths - so find a book about something they like, especially for primary kids because you want them to love learning.

Q: How did you incorporate learning at home with the teachers?

A: Teachers are an amazing resource, so email, text, zoom, skype (etc) with them. They are there to help and want to help. I am not tech savvy but the teacher would always be very helpful

The University of the Sunshine Coast’s clinical psychology student cohort are offering a new, free program to help families cope with the change in routine. Provisionally registered psychologists who are studying to become clinical psychologists will run the ‘Coping Kids’ program via phone or Zoom video conferencing.

USC Master of Psychology (Clinical) program coordinator, Associate Professor Helen Stallman, said the program teaches specific strategies to parents to manage their child’s emotional outbursts or anxiety.

“It can be really challenging for parents to know what to say or do when their child is upset and their behaviour becomes confronting,” Dr Stallman said.

The Coping Kids program is five weekly sessions where not only the parent is taught new strategies to implement, but is also armed with new ways to help their child manage their own behaviour and emotions long term. The Coping Kids program is open to parents of children aged 2-17.

Donna with her three teenage sons in answering my questions and I found good teachers want to support you and your child through this process.

Q: What is your outlook on schooling the kids at home?

A: At the end of the day our family moto is 'equip for life'. So with schooling the kids at home, we want them to get through to the other side - of this current situation but also at any time in life.

So look for the teachable moments, in the car, at the shops, on tv shows, how to cook, building something in the shed or sharing your talents with them.

Q: Any final helpful tips?

I would say routine helps and setting time for technology - like Wii and Xboxes - so that they aren’t on them all day. Exercise helps even if it is push ups in the lounge room and lifting weight with the 3lt milk in each hand. Pick your battles and have some laughs and fun along the way!

As a parent I would suggest you make sure to take your ‘teacher hat off’ and give the kids time as 'mum/dad' and have fun with your kids.

Sometimes I would be so focused on getting it done and getting it right that I would miss seeing that Josh wasn’t learning because it was too hard or I was getting to angry about him not ‘getting it’.

So you need to take a break, for us, he would jump on the trampoline, and I would regroup take a breath and focus on what it is we were trying to learn. Most of the time, it would run more smoothly after that.

Practical tips for parents

As the world around us seems to change on an almost daily rate, both children and adults may be struggling to navigate what can be a stressful or anxious time. CQUniversity’s clinical psychologist, Professor Sarah Blunden, explained that children may lack the cognitive capacity to process the threat they sense about COVID-19, but there are a number of ways that adults can help them manage anxiety.

“Children will inevitably pick up on the concerns and anxiety of others, whether this be through listening and observing what is happening at home or at school,” Prof Bluden said. “It is important that they can speak to you about their own concerns.”

Prof Blunden suggested some ways to help reduce anxiety in children include trying to limit related media exposure, and to provide opportunities to answer their questions in an honest and ageappropriate way. She suggested that letting children know that many people recover from this virus is helpful, and to focus with the children on what things make them happy and ways to keep in touch with friends and especially family.

You may have seen a funny YouTube clip called ‘Quarantine Day 3’. It depicts a kid holding a Nerf gun who is crying, she is evidently sick of being stuck at home and is letting everyone know about it. The video ends with her turning the Nerf gun around and shooting a foam dart at herself.

Being cooped up at home during self-isolation for an undetermined period of time is no easy task. In many ways, it’s a bit like doing a family road trip. To start with, road trips are fun, but there comes a point in the trip when everyone is tired, bored, and over it.

I have two suggestions for us blokes to try during this time: 1. Inject some humour into your home-life…

You know those moments when you’re in a situation that is incredibly tense, people are uptight… the sort of scenarios that give you a headache. Isn’t it great when someone breaks that tension by saying something funny that leaves everyone rolling around laughing. Ken Davis defined humour as “a gentle way of acknowledging human frailty”. What a great way to explain it.

Create some awesome family traditions that keep things light and positive. For example, sometimes my family does impersonations around the dinner table. It’s funny as.

2. Remember that we are stronger than we think. There are going to be times with this whole coronavirus situation when we will feel over it - just like the kid with the Nerf gun. But there are often emotional, physical and mental reserves that we do not know we have, until we are tested. About four years ago my wife had spinal surgery and it was a really difficult time for our family. But, we got through it, and we are now stronger as a family and individually too.

In many ways, our spouses/partners and kids will be looking to us for leadership and to be reassured that they will get through this tough time. This is a big responsibility, but we can do it.

Absolute stupidity

I cannot believe the stupidity of some Aussies.

Normally they say Aussies band together in times of crisis, well hasn’t that gone out the window as far as the shopping is concerned.

Also people who will not listen to the rules.

Please stop buying up those essential items as there really might be some people out here that would like to pick up just one item of toilet paper, milk, flour, pasta or baked beans.

Come on and do the right thing for everyone concerned. We don’t constantly want to be going back and forwards to the shop looking for them, especially toilet paper because if people can’t get it there are no options to use other materials. The last thing we need are sewerage problems.

It makes me so angry that this is happening.

Grow up people and do the right thing!

It’s amazing how a virus in China converted the Neo-Liberal Morrison Government into a bunch of dyed in the wool Keynesians.

It was only a few months ago that ‘The Economist’ was bemoaning the fact that conventional economic theory of inflation and unemployment no longer worked. The Keynesian pump priming is a much needed antidote and stimulus for the current economic malaise and slowdown but as the Prime Minister exclaimed "watch out what you ask for".

By 2021 Australian public debt will be around at least one trillion dollars. The 21-22 budget will make Tony Abbott's first budget look like a tea party. In its return to its neo-Liberal roots the Government will slash, burn and cut public spending to repay our debt and bring the budget back to surplus. Gone will be all the sacred cows: negative gearing; rural subsidies, franking credits; unnecessary middle class welfare; corporate welfare; large infrastructure projects etc.

The size of the Government will be pruned and there will be massive cuts to education, welfare and health.

I wonder whether the Morrison Government will end up like the Scullin Government in the 1930's.

After doing all the hard yards to take Australian out of the Great Depression it lost office.

My grandfather marched off to WW1 as a19 year old and returned with two glass eyes. My grandmother used to read him the newspaper every morning with his cup of tea.

ECQ shouldn’t be so quick to issue fines this year

State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has today said he will support any resident of the Caloundra Electorate who receives a fine from the ECQ for not voting at the weekend’s Council Elections if they were unable to attend a polling booth for health reasons.

“My office, much like many other MP’s offices across the State, have received countless phone calls and emails from concerned residents who made the decision to not attend polling booth for the Council Elections but were unable to secure another means to vote,” Mr McArdle said.

“Over the past few weeks my office has been working hard to assist residents with organising a postal vote application or accessing the phone polling line but understand that due to such high demand many were either unable to obtain a postal vote or successfully complete a phone vote due to ineligibility.

“We are living through extraordinary times and while the process of democracy is critical, so is protecting those in our society who are most vulnerable.

“When it comes to issuing fines for this election I believe the ECQ should be proceeding with a clear understanding of what people were facing and empathy for what is going in the world.

“I will encourage anyone from the Caloundra Electorate who receives a fine from ECQ and was unable to vote for health reasons, to forward a copy of the fine to my office I will be taking it up with ECQ,” Mr McArdle concluded.

I looked her sadly in the eye, Then let out this awful shout.

I said “You need to frisk me - boys My girth is quite extreme; For all you know - I might have stashed Two cans of Heinz Baked Beans.

“You don’t know what it’s like” I cried, “When you turn the other cheek; Our septic system’s all clogged up!

It’s been like that for weeks.

My bosom’s also not that big, At my age - I just droop.

But do your duty - check me out, It’s Chicken Noodle Soup.

It’s 'cause of what I’ve flushed down there, Cardboard and old socks; Next week when things get desperate, I’ll cut up Kevin’s jocks.”

Health & Wellbeing Free counselling service to support community Counselling students from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) are using their final year work placements to help the community through uncertain times, providing free phone and online support at the USC Counselling and Wellbeing Clinic.

Currently a team of 12 students will be offering unlimited free, closely supervised, counselling services to the community. Master of Counselling program coordinator Dr Mark Pearson said the students would strengthen the service at a time the community needs mental health support more than ever.

“Everyone is being affected by the situation right now and our message to the public is, don’t wait until it feels really serious before you take steps to get help with your worries,” said Dr Pearson.

“The clinic is focused on wellbeing and resilience-building. For example, those who have been severely economically impacted by COVID-19 and who can’t afford counselling, although counselling won’t solve the financial problem, it can help you respond in the most resilient way to what is happening.”

The clinic’s student counsellors are nearing the end of their studies and are closely supervised during the sessions, consulting each time with a supervisor of 30 years clinical experience and using referral pathways to other services, as required.

The placement is part of their accreditation for the Bachelor and Master of Counselling, which require 40 and 80 hours counselling time respectively.

Support hotline opens for vulnerable in COVID-19 quarantine

Queenslanders in home quarantine as a result of COVID-19 will be able to access advice, information and support through the Queensland Government’s Community Recovery Hotline.

The Minister for Communities Coralee O’Rourke said the hotline had been activated by the government to support people who had been advised to quarantine at home by a medical professional, Queensland Health or through government direction.

“Most Queenslanders have been self-reliant and made their own arrangements for their period of quarantine,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“However, we know that some people who are in quarantine aren’t able to organise the delivery of essential food and medications they may need.

“These Queenslanders are now able to phone the Community Recovery Hotline on 1800 173 349.

“Our staff will be able to work with partner organisations to arrange noncontact delivery of essential food and medication to people in quarantine who have no other means of support.

“The Community Recovery Hotline may also be used by people who choose to self-isolate to ask for social and emotional telephone support.”

Mrs O’Rourke said the Community Recovery Hotline was currently intended to help the most vulnerable Queenslanders in quarantine.

“At this time the hotline is only for people in quarantine, and only for those who have no other support mechanisms,” she said.

“Queenslanders who require health advice or information while in quarantine or self-isolation should call 13 HEALTH (13 432 584) or visit health.qld.gov.au/coronavirus.”

How are you connecting with your family and friends?

As the number of people choosing to stay home and practice physical distancing increases daily, staying in touch with loved ones, family and friends becomes even more important to maintain wellbeing and social connections. While a simple phone call is great, many people find that to be able to make and receive a video call allows an even better sense of connection, plus it’s fun! And the good news is that no matter what your age, if you have computer or smart phone and internet access you can easily do it.

If you are not sure how to set up video calls, chat with friends or relatives about what they use to stay in touch, and maybe their tips on how to install it on your device, or consider checking out a free online tutorial.

Sunshine Coast Library or the State Library of Queensland have some great online teaching resources that are easy to use and well worth checking out, or do a quick google search from your device.

There are many easy to access options to stay connected with video chat - some of which may be already installed on your device. So long as you have access to WiFi or the internet, you should be able to use video chat products.

For those with Apple devices (i.e. IPhone, IPad, Macs) you can use FaceTime and both Apple and Android users can download Skype and Zoom. Facebook users have access to Facebook messenger - which is super easy to use - just look for the video icon at the top of the screen to tap to make a video call. WhatsApp, Houseparty, Google Hangouts and Viber are also popular apps that allow users to interact online either individually or as a group, which can be a really cool way to bring people together and maintain social contact responsibly - Friday night online drinks anyone? Or even a Sunday morning coffee with the girls.

University of New South Wales Professor of computer science and awardwinning educator Richard Buckland suggests that there are a number of ways to help less tech-savvy relatives or friends adapt to socialising online.

Key points to remember are positive motivation and making it fun when helping navigate the online world. Before you start to teach someone a new skill, Prof Buckland suggests making sure that they have a good reason to learn.

“If they don’t seem that eager, the motivation needs to be something positive - something they can get excited about. For example, if I were teaching my parents how to use video chat, I might say, the kids really want us to have a video dinner together on Friday night - let’s get all that set up, what do you think?” said Prof Buckland.

By focusing on the positive outcome, it’s more likely they’ll be in a better mindset about learning and excited to get started. Above all else, learning a new skill should be a happy experience.

So reach out and find out what your friends and family are using to stay in touch, and either get them to either help you access the same video chat product on your device or jump online and teach yourself how to install and use it. With all the easy to use technology at out fingertips now, physical distancing doesn’t mean social disconnection - so get connected and stay social online!

Update your medicines list now

If you take one or more regular medicines, make sure you have an up-to-date list of all the medicines you take.

This is the advice from NPS MedicineWise ahead of an anticipated increase in the number of people seeking health care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pharmacist Nerida Packham says a medicines list is a complete list of all your prescription, over-the-counter and complementary medicines.

“If you take one or more regular medicines, make sure you have an up-to-date medicines list in case you need to go into hospital unexpectedly or visit a doctor or pharmacist who is not familiar with your health status,” Ms Packham said.

“If you care for someone, help them prepare a list of their medicines too and make sure family members know where and how to access a copy of each other’s medicines lists.”

Record the active ingredient of your medicine, what the medicine is for, and how and when you take it.

You can download a blank copy of the NPS MedicineWise medicines list or download the free MedicineWise app for your phone.

The MedicineWise app can store a list of your medicines and general health information, schedule reminders and provide information on your medicines.

It also helps people who care for loved ones using multiple medicines to manage a list on their behalf. Download the free MedicineWise app from Google Play or the App Store.

“Most importantly, have the medicines list with you when you go into hospital, or visit or talk to a doctor,” Ms Packham said.

Federal Member for Fisher Coronavirus COVID-19

All of us are facing difficult times right now as we play our part in saving lives and saving livelihoods across the Sunshine Coast from the COVID-19 outbreak. My office is receiving hundreds of new emails and phone calls every day from Fisher residents who are doing it tough.

We are doing our best to get back to everyone as quickly as we can, and if you have contacted me but have not had an immediate reply, please have patience. Rest assured that we are responding and helping as quickly as we possibly can.

Since last week’s column, the Government has introduced an historic new package of measures with an unprecedented investment of $130 billion to help more businesses stay open and six million more people to keep their jobs through this coronavirus crisis. This third tranche of Federal Government assistance now equals $320 billion being spent over the next six months to help Australians weather this public health and economic storm. That sum equates to 16.4% of Australia’s Gross Domestic Product. Eligible employers who register with the Australian Taxation Office will now receive $1,500 per fortnight from the Government to pay to every eligible employee that they keep in their job. This applies to full time and part time employees, as well as casual employees who have been employed with that employer for more than 12 months.

Eligible employers include businesses, sole traders, self-employed people and not for profits which have lost more than 30% of their turnover since the coronavirus crisis began or 50% for the largest businesses nationwide.

These JobKeeper payments will be backdated to 1 March 2020, so if you have been stood down or let go since that date, contact your employer to check whether they are registering for this scheme. If so, you may be eligible to retain your job, receive payment from your employer, supplemented and supported by the Federal Government, instead of going onto JobSeeker allowance through Centrelink.

The Government has also acted decisively to make childcare free for families who need it to keep working or to protect vulnerable children.

Since Monday 6 April, the Government has been providing unprecedented direct funding to childcare providers if they stay open and do not charge families fees for care. This payment is on top of the JobKeeper Payment they will also receive and will help make sure that if you need your local childcare, it will still be open and

Division 1 - Sunshine Coast absolutely free for you to use. It will also allow childcare centres to waive fees for children who are absent from care, so if you have terminated your children’s enrolment since 17 February then please get back in contact with your centre and see if you can re-start their arrangements. You will not have to send your child to care or pay a gap fee, but it will mean that their place is held until things are back to normal.

We are also providing extra funding for new healthcare options. This includes $669 million to expand Medicare-subsidised Ttelehealth services for all Australians so that you can access GPs and specialists, allied health workers, nurses, psychologists and others bulked billed services from home using your telephone or video conferencing apps.

It is important to point out that these measures introduced by the Federal Government are proportionate, scalable, and affordable, and they have an end date which at this stage is in six months.

Finally, the Government has introduced new ways to keep up with the latest information. In addition to visiting www.australia.gov.au you can now download a free app, called Coronavirus Australia from both the Apple App Store and if you use an android device, the Play Store. You can also join a WhatsApp group, Australia’s largest ever chat group, at www.aus.gov.au/whatsapp. Again I am also providing the most important information through my email distribution list and you can sign up for that at www.andrewwallacemp. com.au through the ‘Contact’ tab. Thank you I want to take the opportunity to thank the community for putting your trust in me for another term as your representative. It is an outstanding honour.

Until the result is officially confirmed, I will be working through that time in my role as the current councillor.

Obviously, the difficult times have meant there hasn’t been much celebration at my house, and I’m currently setting up a home office so that I can participate in the new council from home as much as possible.

My thoughts go out to all the healthcare workers dealing with this crisis on the “front lines” and to anyone else affected, either in terms of health, work or family.

Personally, my daughter-in-law is a nurse who has just returned to work, so I am looking at not being able to see her or my son until it’s safe to do so, which could be some months. I’m sure most readers have similar stories.

I hope the new council can be finalised soon so that we can work on putting together a package of measures to help the community.

Until then, I support the mayor and the CEO working together to use their directive powers to take whatever actions necessary.

Finally, thank you to my supporters and family, and thank you to the whole community and the other candidates for participating in the democratic process. I think we all understand now is the time to pull together, stay safe, and look after those most impacted by this crisis.

Settlement Park

While our parks are currently closed, it has still been good to see the progress on Settlement Park.

The old play equipment had reached the end of its life and we made the decision to move the new equipment further into the open space and construct a pathway from the new Coochin Twins residential estate.

This provides those residents with an easily accessible local park suitable for young families, and it is now safer for everyone as it is further away from the busy road.

The second stage will include more landscaping and shade, and potentially more new play equipment.

I look forward to seeing the community use the park once the restrictions are over and I have been happy to see families using the pathway already to get some exercise.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Where song began In the 1990’s three tiny bones found near Kingaroy were aged at approximately 54 million years ago and were identified as fossils of perching birds – the oldest ever found. This find supported the theory that Australia was the origin of all Passerines (songbirds), also known as ‘perchers’ due to them having three forward toes and one backward, allowing them to perch even when asleep.

Australia’s songbirds today have a huge wealth of form and behaviour that goes with tens of millions of years of evolution, ranging from tiny timid wrens to large combative magpies. Making up 47% of the world’s bird species, songbirds are often foragers, searching for food in trees, shrubs or leaf litter. Many build sophisticated nests, including baskets or cups created from leaves, animal hair, cobwebs, lichen and moss. The moniker ‘songbird’ is somewhat misleading as not all Passerines have melodious calls, though most are relatively vocal. Australian songbirds include honeyeaters, fairy wrens, finches, willie wagtails, fantails, whistlers, treecreepers and pardalotes.

Because our climate is relatively mild year round (compared with the harsh winters of the northern hemisphere), our songbirds are more sedentary, have smaller clutches, longer incubation and fledgling periods, and longer nesting seasons than their norther counterparts.

They also tend to live longer.

Slow breeding allows the development of larger more complex brains.

Australian songbirds are among the most intelligent of birds, and include the most astounding of all songbirds, the superb lyrebird, whose ability to mimic sounds with incredible accuracy is unparalleled.

Environment Access restrictions to HQPlantations managed forests

The federal government has announced that from Tuesday March 30 nonessential outdoor gatherings are now restricted to two people to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

This announcement, along with other requirements, has impacts for members of the public visiting forests managed by HQPlantations.

Locally, HQPlantations manage Beerburrum and Beerwah State Forests, including logging areas in Glass House Mountains and Landsborough.

So unless the forest plantations are in your neighbourhood, you should not be visiting.

However, physical exercise including walking, trail running, mountain bike riding for local people is still permitted solo, in pairs or for families who live together. As always, HQPlantations worksite signage must be observed with no entry to worksites.

Motorised recreation, 4WD and motor bikes do not meet the federal government’s essential activity criteria and is not permitted until restrictions are lifted.

People should avoid gathering at car parks and other popular meeting places in groups of more than two people and fines apply for failure to comply with state and federal government requirements.

All recreation permits are cancelled, including recreation-based commercial activity permits, all organised event permits (excluding mustering) and all permits to traverse. Filming photography permits are also cancelled.

Permits for apiaries, stock grazing, agistment, mustering, fodder collection, leasing and occupation are classified as essential work and are currently unaffected.

Get off the grass, you flamin’ pest!

There’s a lot of action in people’s backyards at the moment … and not in a good way.

If your grass is looking decidedly worse for wear, you might have a lawn-munching pest

problem.

Most people refer to anything that eats the grass as a lawn grub.

But there are a couple of varieties which are very different from each other.

The one most people know as lawn grub is actually the larvae of the African black beetle.

Also called a curl grub (because of the way it curls up when exposed), they look like miniature witchety grubs, with the black beetle adults commonly seen crawling on top of the grass after heavy rain.

The curl grubs eat the roots from under the ground, damaging the grass, sometimes so much that it dies.

Another common problem is identified when the grass starts to die off in patches and there are small caterpillars at the base of the grass; this is a good sign that you have a problem with sod webworms.

They’re actually not worms, but are the caterpillars of a smallish pointyheaded light brown moth. It is common to see these moths fly up out of the grass when you walk around, especially in the evening.

The little caterpillars come out at night to eat the grass, and grow to about 25mm long, with a light green-brown body and dark spots along its length.

The last of the most common is the lawn armyworm. Again, this isn’t a worm but the caterpillar life stage of a moth. These are larger than the sod webworm with the moth and caterpillar being about 40mm in length.

Lawn armyworms have caused havoc this year Curl grub up and down the coast, with entire backyards stripped in a matter of days.

Each moth can lay around 1,000 eggs, which rapidly hatch into hungry caterpillars and mass together to devour the lawn.

During the day, they hide under the grass thatch, but at night they march up to eat all the grass. Leaving you with dead, brown, bare lawn.

Control for them all is a personal choice. There are a range of chemical options available and it’s best to have a talk with someone at a local produce store or one of our Mitre 10 stores Lawn armyworm to get advice on the most suitable for your problem.

There are also non-chemical options people can use, including washing detergent in to the grass to drive the caterpillars up to the surface, in the hope that native birds will then find and eat them.

The lawn armyworm is related to a new very serious exotic pest incursion which has arrived in the top end of Queensland – the fall Sod webworm armyworm.

In the Garden Ode to the empty seed stand Have you tried to buy a packet of seed lately ... any seed? If you have, I feel your pain.

And it’s not even the common fancy lettuce or French radish or giant Fordhook silverbeet - there’s no kohl rabi, no celeriac, no globe artichoke, no pickling gherkins … not even a single packet of okra (who even knows what okra is?)

Is there some sort of gardening free-for-all frenzy happening? Are people using all those empty toilet rolls to grow seedlings in?

On the upside, I really hope that whatever people are doing with their seeds that they are taking good care of them and learning a little about how to grow and look after seedlings. And maybe … just maybe, there might be a new generation of avid gardeners emerging from the coronavirus ashes.

Seeds are amazing things - little packets of hope and opportunity just waiting to burst forth and multiply.

But they are also surprisingly fragile and need special treatment if they are to survive to be planted.

Rule number one. They have a used by date (it’s on the packet) so make sure you get them into some seed raising mix before then. Tip, the date relates to an unopened packet and that’s out the window once you tear it open.

Rule number two. Don’t open the packet until you want to sow them. Seeds start to deteriorate from the day you expose them to the elements. Once opened, they – like a jar of sliced black olives – won’t last as long as you think.

Rule number three. Learn about what it is that you’ve just spent your hard-earned cash panic buying. Don’t just rely on the 25 words on the seed packet - that’s just mostly marketing anyway.

Is it actually suited to our climatic growing zone? (sorry if you’ve bought Brussels sprouts) Is it seasonal coming into winter? (sorry if you’ve bought capsicum) Does it take special conditions to germinate? (good luck with your Lebanese zucchini) How long does it take to grow to maturity? (you’ll be picking onions in December) Are there any special soil conditions that it requires? (how long has it been since you limed the soil) How big will it grow? (hope you’ve got some really tall stakes for those oxheart tomatoes) How do you sow that seed to get the best germination? (let’s see how many of those tiny celery seeds make it) Can you germinate and grow them in a container and then transplant them? (don’t expect too much from your carrots grown this way) What pests and diseases do you need to watch out for and how do you deal with them? (is that ladybug a good one or a bad one … tip, if it’s got 28 spots, it’s a baddie) Rule number four. How’s your growing medium looking? (that’s your soil).

If all you’ve got is a cheap bag of potting mix in a black plastic pot, I’m not sure if the watermelon is really going to take off.

Soil needs to be a balance of mineral components, organic components, sands, clays and nutrients. It also needs a healthy ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, worms and other organisms to work in harmony with the plants you want to grow. Do you know the soil pH? And do you know what it should be for the seeds you’ve bought?

Rule number five. Store your seeds carefully. Leaving them in a hot garden shed is a sure way to quicken their demise. You need to keep them in a cool spot, away from light and moisture; and they will be attractive for rats, mice, cockroaches, possums, silverfish and weevils, so keep them pest-safe as well.

Rule number six. Sowing seeds is more than just putting some dirt on them.

If you’re sowing directly into the garden, you need to prepare the soil with a fine tilth. Seedlings don’t fare well trying to push up through clods of soil.

If you’re sowing them into trays or containers, use a seed raising mix rather than just potting mix. Potting mix will be too coarse for the fine seeds to germinate and grow. Know how deep you need to sow the seeds and keep them moist but not overly watered. If you’ve bought all the bean packets – sow, water well just the once, put them under cover and don’t water again until the seedlings have pushed through.

Rule number seven. Only sow as much as you want to plant, and only plant as much as you need to eat (and maybe a little extra for the neighbours).

You sow a whole packet of cauliflower seeds and you’ll end up with a couple of hundred – the same goes with any of the herbs, lettuce, radish and Asian greens. Alternatively, give away the excess seedlings to others who haven’t been able to find any … anywhere.

Rule number eight. Treat the young seedlings like your babies. They need special attention in their start to life, and any stress or mistakes now will set them back in the long run.

Rule number nine. Enjoy your time in the garden looking after your new found hobby. Once you’re bitten, the gardening bug is forever. Don’t be put off by a failure, we all have them. Try again and try to work out what went wrong and you’ll become a better gardener next time.

Rule number ten. Don’t buy all the seeds. Just buy what you need and what you actually want to grow. In the end, most fresh veggies are available in stores all year round, so it’s not a race for survival. There’s enough for everyone – hopefully including me (I just want one packet each of English and perpetual spinach seeds).

Notification of Proposed nbn™ Radio Network Base Station Facilities The National Broadband Network (nbn) is a high speed broadband network designed to reach 100 per cent of Australian premises and provide the communications infrastructure to help us stop falling behind in an increasingly online world. nbn is committed to delivering leading edge broadband services to all Australians by leveraging the three types of technology available – fixed line, fixed wireless and satellite, depending on location.

As part of the fixed radio (wireless) component of the Network, nbn is proposing to expand the existing radio network base stations at the following locations.

• 419 Mooloolah Road, Eudlo QLD 4554 The proposed works on site will involve the upgrade of existing technology upon the facility including and not limited to the replacement and installation of new antennas and associated ancillary equipment to enhance transmitting technology.

• 20 Eagles Nest Court, Bald Knob QLD 4552 The proposed works on site will involve the upgrade of existing technology upon the facility including and not limited to the replacement and installation of new antennas, a radiocommunications dish and associated ancillary equipment to enhance transmitting technology.

The works are to provide high quality wireless broadband services to customers in the surrounding localities. nbn regards the proposed installations as a Low Impact Facility under the Telecommunications (Low-Impact Facilities) Determination 2018. In these circumstances, it does not require planning approval from Council.
