Hi Everyone...

If you are a regular reader of GC&M News you won’t be surprised to see that this month – and just in time for International Women’s Day this Thursday – we have included our Women in Business feature.

Our local business communities are made up of some very dedicated, determined and hardworking business women and I hope you enjoy reading a little more about them as individuals.

This Thursday sees women across the world come together to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

Locally there are a number of events happening, and one that I am looking forward to is ‘Dusk on the Deck’, an event hosted by the Zonta Club of Blackall Range at Maleny Community Centre, which is now in its third year.

The event is one that brings a diverse group of local women together with the highlight being the announcement of the 2018 recipient of Zonta’s Woman of Achievement Award.

A strong guiding principal of Zonta’s community work is the focus on the advancement of the status of women and the support they provide for women in need throughout the world makes it a perfect fit with the ideals of International Women’s Day.

There were 295 ideas submitted from 44 countries, so when local tropical fruit farmer Karen Martin found out that hers was one of six successful entries she was absolutely thrilled.

Each of the winners will walk away a grand prize of $20,000 US. The winning entries came from Australia, Bolivia, Bulgaria, England, Indonesia and Mexico.

Through the HeroX crowdsourcing contest, Karen’s submission focused on the use of custard apple dust as an alternative sweetener.

“For quite a while now, my husband and I had been thinking of innovative ways to make better use of our second grade custard apples,” Karen said.

“I approached a local company that specialises in freeze-drying products. After a quantity of freezedried pulp was crushed, Custard Dust was born.

“My family had already been using custard apples in home baking and smoothies, and I wondered whether our product might have other uses.

“I replaced the added sugar on my breakfast cereals, sprinkling on some Custard Dust instead, I also enjoy Custard Dust in my tea and coffee.

“Custard Dust does not taste the same as sugar. It is simply a different kind of sweet flavour.

“Consumer tastes are forever changing and perhaps the time has come for new types of natural sugar alternatives to hold a place in the market.”

This naturally occurring variety grew as an individual branch on a different variety of custard apple tree on Robert and Karen’s orchard at Glass House Mountains.

“We own the plant breeder rights to this new variety, ‘PinksBlush’. As the fruit matures, the green fruit colour gradually evolves,” Karen said.

“A rich tapestry of pastel colours on the shoulder of the skin helps this variety stand out in a crowd.

“Just when the harvest of other varieties has almost finished, our ‘PinksBlush’ season starts in September.”

This is fantastic news for consumers because now the Australian custard apple season effectively extends by four months.

“When I became aware of the Coca-Cola Sweet Story Challenge last year, I really wanted to share our story, and what an unbelievable surprise I received to find out that we had won,” Karen said.

Local News Boomerang Bags for local chicks

As at July 1 this year, single use plastic bags will be a thing of the past in Queensland.

With this in mind, not-for-profit Boomerang Bags groups have been set up at Maleny and Glasshouse Country with the purpose of producing reusable cloth bags as an environmentally friendly local alternative.

In support of this great initiative Maleny Credit Union recently awarded the group a Charitable Trust grant of $750 which went towards the purchase of a new sewing machine and overlocker to help the Maleny group expand their operations.

“We recognised this as a great social enterprise run by a group of young entrepreneurs doing this on a volunteer basis,” she said.

“MCU has a social responsibility in relation to the environment and this fits our brief perfectly.”

Each month Nicole also organises a Chicks in Biz breakfast, which 30 or so local women in business attend.

Last Wednesday, Samara Jane and Meighan Shaw from Boomerang Bags Maleny attended their first Chicks in Biz breakfast and all of the ladies were gifted their very own Boomerang Bag. Both Boomerang Bags Maleny and Glasshouse Country are looking for other like-minded individuals to join in and be involved in this worthwhile project.

The Maleny group meet on the first and third Monday of every month from 10am to 2pm at The Little Red Cottage, 20 Coral Street, Maleny. The Glasshouse country group's next meeting will be on Tuesday, March 13, from 8.30am – 12noon at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and fortnightly thereafter (more details are on page 8).

Outback brush strokes makes local impact

By Judith Ross-Smith Recently a Blackall Range Zontian, past president Alison Huth, was travelling with her husband in the Broken Hill area and visited the workshop gallery of artist Howard Steer.

One thing led to another, as they do, the Sunshine Coast was mentioned, Howard has a sister in Noosa… we all know the sort of thing.

The upshot was the artist showed Alison one of his paintings, a 900 x 1200 canvas, and asked if she “had room for it at home”. Realising this was a gift, she quickly said, “can I use it for a raffle for my Zonta Club?”

It’s another story how the pair managed to take the large painting on their travels and finally home in the back of their car, but once back on the Range serendipity stepped in again.

Jane and Tony at Art on Cairncross offered to frame the colourful painting for the club’s fundraising.

Howard Steer is a typical Broken Hill artist in the tradition of Pro Hart, with paintings of people and places, full of colour and life.

Self-taught, he is styled as a ‘story artist’ where every painting tells its own story be it a backyard wedding or the royal flying doctor.

His work is in private collections here and overseas and highly sought after from galleries and exhibitions.

The painting titled ‘Brush Strokes of the Outback’ is valued at $3,300 and could be described as a pastiche of Australian icons including a windmill,

Zonta Blackall Range will use ‘Brush Strokes’ as a major fundraiser for its scholarship program and launch it at the ‘Dusk on the Deck’ function for International Women’s Day at the Maleny Community Centre this Thursday, March 8, from 5.30pm to 7pm.

The plan is to sell only 500 tickets at $20 each and the winner’s name will be drawn on May 15.

Tickets are also available at Art on Cairncross Gallery on the corner of Landsborough and Mountain View Roads, or from the Zonta Club at scholarship@zontablackallrange.org.au.

Maleny Show Personalities 2018

By Sonia Clark Members of the Maleny Show Society are busy rolling up their sleeves in preparation for this year’s Maleny Show to be held on Friday and Saturday June 1 and 2.

Currently the search is on for community-minded teens and adults who would consider nominating for a 2018 ‘Show Personality’ position.

There are a number of categories to enter including Miss Showgirl, Junior Show Princess, Charity Person and Rural Ambassador.

Show Society President Ivan Hankinson said every year the work done by inspiring young people who nominate to take on the roles of fundraising or show ambassadors is an important part of the show.

If you are considering nominating for the Charity Person role it is worth thinking about your fundraising efforts early. Each entrant agrees to raise a minimum of $1,200 allowing them to

qualify for the major prize incentive of $2,000 worth of travel vouchers!

The Charity Person role is a great way to build confidence and develop skills in fundraising, networking, public speaking and community involvement. It provides a fantastic way to build local connections while also giving back to the community.

The 2018 Show Personality winners will be announced at the annual Maleny Show Ball event on Saturday May 19, which also serves as the official launch of the show season.

New for this year is a Junior Personality category for boys and girls aged under 12 and those aged between 12 and 15. This will be a more informal category that children can enter on the night of the show ball.

CommBank kicks off fundraising

By Sonia Clark Local powerhouse couple Neil and Sharon Collie were the grateful recipients of a $500 cheque from the Commonwealth Bank branch at Beerwah in support of their fundraising efforts for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Neil and Sharon are currently training hard for this year’s Big Red Run, the six-day 250km running event in June-July through the Simpson Desert.

Beerwah Branch Manager Mandie Holst had been following the story of Neil’s previous participation in this mammoth event when she discovered that his wife Sharon, who she knew from the branch at Beerwah, was also planning to participate.

The branch had access to a community fund to support local initiatives and so Mandie decided to make contact with the couple via Facebook with an offer of support.

Mandie said she wanted to support something local that didn’t already receive funding and knew this was Neil’s second attempt at completing the race.

“Sharon and Neil are both very deserving locals and it’s a great cause we are happy to support,” said Mandie.

Neil said it was disappointing last year not to have been able to complete the full 250km due to heat exhaustion.

“But this year, together, we’ll be able to encourage and push each other,” he said.

Community News Love was in the air

Love was in the air on Valentine’s Day for some lucky lovers, which meant flowers had arrived, or a restaurant had been booked.

However in Mapleton this year there was a literary twist to the love.

Members of the Mapleton Community Library hosted their annual ‘Lovers of Books’ event where they invited Sunshine Coast authors who provided the audience with an interesting and entertaining glimpse into their experiences.

The six writers covered a wide range of genres including poetry, illustrated children’s books, illustrated books for adults, crime, mystery and inspirational books.

Two of the local writers that shared in the day were Alison Lambert and Blackall Range author Valverde Maclean.

Alison has a good claim to be local, growing up in Coolum when it was still a tiny farming community. After a stint nursing in western Queensland and Nambour, she and her family established an avocado farm in Mapleton.

Eighteen years ago Alison returned to the

Blackall Range. In between, she majored in English Literature at the University of Alison Lambert Queensland.

Her passion is literature and poetry her specialty, and on the day she read a number of her poems to the gathered attendees.

Valverde’s third novel ‘The Letter’ has just been released. It tells of a woman’s search for the answer to an old family mystery. This search changes her life, and the lives of those close to her.

He spoke of how events in earlier generations can, without our knowledge, affect our lives. He also touched briefly on the massive changes in Queensland since the late eighteen hundreds.

It adds an interesting side story as the present day characters seek to understand their past as well as their present. His books are available in print and digital formats from Amazon and www. valverdemaclean.com.

During a break for drinks and nibbles, library members and authors were able to share their experiences about books and writing.

Ditching plastic for fabric The Glasshouse Country Boomerang Bags group is a wonderful way for people to start conversations, make friends, up-cycle materials and work towards shifting society’s throw away mentality to a more sustainable revolution of reuse – one community, needle and thread at a time!

Boomerang Bags is a community initiative where bags are made by volunteers using recycled material. The bags are for sale for only $2 a bag at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre (4 Ryan Street) and the Everything Good fruit shop on Steve Irwin Way. The next Boomerang Bag making session will

be held on Tuesday March 13, 8.30am to noon, at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and fortnightly thereafter. This is not just for people who can sew. There are ways for all to be involved, whether it be, ironing, cutting or just popping in for a cuppa.

Donations of cotton fabric (including doona covers and sheets) can be made to the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre weekdays between 9am and noon.

Seeking active retirees

The Glass House Mountains Probus Club is always on the lookout for active retirees who live in the local area to join them for the three Fs of “Fun, Friendship and Fellowship” (there is definitely no fundraising) at their monthly meetings and outings.

Last month the group visited the ABC Studios in Brisbane, where they were given a guided tour of the building and were able to see the TV and Radio studios and meet the 612 morning breakfast announcers.

The group meetings, held at the Beerwah Community Hall on the second Wednesday of the month, include a guest speaker and, on the third Wednesday of each month, they head off on an outing.

Their next meeting is on March 14 at 10am.

Invitation to meet the Lions

Lions are out and about all year round working for the betterment of the local community together with state, national and international projects which benefit the world.

This Sunday, March 11, Lions Clubs from the Hinterland and Sunshine Coast Zone 12 will be out and about at Happy Valley Park in Caloundra celebrating ‘Lions Awareness Day’ which was on March 3 and the start of ‘Membership Month’ on March 5.

A free sausage sizzle will be available for the early birds so please come along and meet the Lions and find out what we do in your community and also tell us what your community needs are.

Did you know that one of the many things Lions Clubs do is to collect used spectacles and sunglasses, grade them and send them to third world countries to assist those less fortunate then ourselves?

Lions also collect old mobile phones to assist in raising funds for the Lions Medical Research Foundation and also old hearing aids. We will have collection boxes available at the park for you to donate any these unwanted items.

Among our guests at this meeting, we welcomed back Wendy, Ivor and David and a very warm welcome was extended to Chelsea and it was a pleasure have Julie from the Kilcoy Club visit.

Peter Agapow gave ‘The Word for the Day’ – facilitate – which generated a great deal of mirth around the tables as people used this word when speaking. While ‘Speaking off the Cuff’ proved to be very funny as participants were asked to give a literary review on a nominated book.

Painful headaches getting you down?

Safe and supported community living Last week GC&M News met up for a morning catch-up with Sharon Eales and her dad Bill Edwards who is a resident in the memory support unit at Glasshouse Views.

Bill has a lovely cheeky smile and a gentle manner and looks at least 20 years younger than his age (coming up to 80 later this month).

Both Sharon and Bill seem very happy and comfortable about the family’s decision to move Bill in to the ‘Mellum Community’ at Glasshouse Views a year ago.

Bill had spent his entire life staying active. A truck driver by profession who had worked in the industry most of his life, the father of seven was originally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease 10 years ago.

After his diagnosis Bill continued to live with his wife until she passed away three years ago, when he then went to live with Sharon.

Sharon said: “Dad seemed to really spiral down with his condition after Mum died.

“We all thought it’d be the best thing for Dad if he came and lived with me but we didn’t realise that it would be such a challenge.”

Living on acreage with three boys of her own, Sharon found that that Bill was often upset by the constant family noise and that he would also wander off, which proved concerning for everyone.

“As Dad’s condition developed, we realised that he really needed to be looked after in a special care environment,” Sharon said.

Living - Music New music festival for Caloundra

Caloundra is set to get its own rock and blues festival later this year with a recent announcement that Caloundra RSL will be presenting an awesome three-day music festival running from Friday June 22 until Sunday June 24.

The Sunshine Rock and Blues Festival will celebrate Australian music and feature an exciting mix of national and touring artists. This weekend event will showcase 20 high calibre live acts (including a number of free shows) spread across three separate sound stages.

Attendees can experience continuous free live shows on the main stage, ticketed events in the function room area and acoustic breakfast performances on the lower Viva deck.

The stellar line up includes a double headliner show on Friday night of one of Australia’s favourite rock artists Jon Stevens and singer-songwriter Richard Clapton.

The Bondi Cigars, Russell Morris and the phenomenal Black Sorrows will play the ticketed event on Saturday night, and Sunday will feature a special acoustic breakfast performance ‘Songwriters in the Round’ with Maleny local Col Finley, 8 Ball Aitken and Michael Bryers followed by Wendy Matthews performing at 1.30pm. Also on the line-up are crowd favourite Ash Grunwald, Phil Emmanuel and band, Mason Rack Band, Bourbon Street, Lecia Louise and more.

Music Today Eudlo Music Nights, April 7 and 8

Music lovers lament the lack of opportunity to attend music events that cross popular stylistic boundaries (folk, blues, jazz, country, rock, world, etc), and are family friendly but allow people to let their hair down a bit – dance and party, and camp the night rather than worry about a late night drive home.

The Eudlo Music Nights (EMN) have been created by the Glasshouse Musos and the Eudlo Hall Association to meet this need. With plans to hold the nights in autumn (April 7-8) and spring (October 6-7) in 2018 at the Wominjeka Park (a five acre site in Highlands Road, Eudlo), the organisers are hoping for more than 100 people to kick off this new event and have kept the gate charge down to $20/$10 including camping/caravanning, to encourage this.

The EMN, which will be held on the Saturday, going from late lunch through to the Sunday early lunch, will have music (performances and workshops) as its key component, but will also include some other activities (the inaugural event is planned to include star gazing, bird watching, yoga and children’s activities). A big fire will be a feature and there will be late night music around it, but guests who like to camp with friends and share music at their campsite are welcome to do so. Food and drinks (including alcohol) will be sold at the venue with a barbeque dinner and breakfast and quality coffee a feature!

There will be over a dozen professional acts booked, and at this stage confirmations for April 7/8 include the Eric Clapton/Joe Cocker covers band, The Claptomaniacs, guitar wizard Van Larkins, rockabilly king Ian B MacLeod, raunchy all-girl rhythm and blues band Vix and the Slick Chix, folk artists Evan Mathieson, Noel Gardner and Alex Bridge, jazz and blues outfit Peter G and the Flat Whites, along with Peter Watkins and Deni Chapple and friends, who cover quite a few styles in their eclectic sets.

Open mics (with prizes for best original songs and best covers), will take place to open and close the event. Spots can be booked for the open mic (see www.eudlomusicnights.com.au for available times) and performers will be allowed two or three songs per act.

The Eudlo Music Nights have been created by musicians for musicians and lovers of music, and welcome everyone to come along and take part!

School News Three leadership services in one week!

Leadership inductions for Primary, Middle and Senior School at Glasshouse Christian College were all held last week. All three were very different events but they had one thing in common.

A special part of each service is where the parents of the student leaders are asked to come down the front and pin the badge on their child’s uniform. This has become such a strong tradition at GCC that there are often grandparents, aunties and uncles who attend the event from all over the world. Last week there was even an aunty from Dubai!

Proud parents and grandparents are invited to step up the front and pin the leadership badge on their own child. Some parents smile with pleasure, some cry with the emotion of the moment, but the one thing they all have in common is how proud they are of their child.

The students love this part of the service just as much as the adults and there are lots of hugs and kisses with only one or two unwilling to be kissed in front of the camera!

Each of the services was followed by a delicious morning tea and cutting of the big cake.

Chappy Stephanie has been busy at lunchtimes assisting a group of craft lovers with the creation of a paper mache project for the big day. She also has plans to create an art piece using old CDs. If you have any unwanted CDs please drop them in to the Beerburrum State School office as soon as possible.

Year 2/3 are currently studying local history and are thinking of questions they may have for a guest speaker who will visit during the coming weeks to discuss the history of the Beerburrum area.

Music lessons also have a yesteryear theme this term with dances and songs from bygone eras being practised for performance at the Centenary.

Bill said: "We are looking forward to a long and harmonious relationship working together, encouraging students to participate in a sport, to gain knowledge, and ultimately enabling them to represent their school in a state-based competition.

“Beerwah State High School already boasts a student that attended Bowls State Trials in Bundaberg in January this year; we are looking to build on this,” he said.

Beerwah Library refresh to benefit the community Visitors and residents of Beerwah are set to benefit from council’s upcoming library refurbishment. To ensure that the library service is not disrupted during the refurbishment, a pop-up library will be open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, at the Beerwah Community Hall. Get out, get active with low cost seniors’ classes There’s still time to kick start 2018 and live well with council’s Healthy Sunshine Coast program.

State Member for Caloundra One is the loneliest number I recently read an article by UK biographer Maggie Fergusson titled ‘Only the lonely’. In it she delved into loneliness in Britain, and described it as the “loneliness capital of Europe”.

Statistically speaking, 7.7 million people live alone in Britain yet it’s largely a taboo topic where people are happy to talk about everything else including death but nobody likes to admit they’re lonely.

Fergusson interviewed many people who lived alone and their responses ranged from feeling worthless and not fitting in to being surrounded by a dark void.

She also mentioned a 68-year-old woman who was found deceased in her flat, but had been dead for nearly three years.

It’s a sad and gut-wrenching thought that people can become so disconnected with their families, friends and community.

Back home the Queensland Government recognises loneliness and social isolation can affect many people, but notes our elderly are especially at risk after the loss of friends and family, reduced mobility or reduced income.

Make no mistake, loneliness is one of our biggest growing national challenges.

One way to try and reduce the risk of loneliness is checking in on our friends and our neighbours who we may not often talk to. A phone call to say hello or a knock on the door and a five-minute conversation can be the start of something great.

Here in Caloundra we’re fortunate to have many community groups who offer a sense of self and connectedness. True Hero Grants You may have heard I’ve recently launched the True Hero Grants fund. I will be awarding 10 grants of $250 each month between March and June to up-and-coming and outstanding individuals or groups in the Caloundra Electorate. Certainly as the Member for Caloundra for the past 14 years I’ve had the privilege of meeting inspirational and selfless people in our local community.

People like Janet Scott who dedicates her time to the local SES, the countless P&C committees who strive to ensure children can learn and play in safe and stimulating environments, the Beerwah Charity Sports Day Committee who put on excellent community events, and the countless leaders of tomorrow – the students across our many schools who have achieved well or been selected to represent their school at district and national titles.

Senseless vandalism

The Maleny Showground is run by a dedicated volunteer committee who work hard to provide the local community and visitors to the area with quality facilities. Which is why is it so disappointing that the showground should be targeted by senseless acts of vandalism as seen in these photos.

Rubbish from wheelie bins was dumped into and around a toilet, before two of the bins were set alight, requiring the local fire service to be called out to the showgrounds on a Saturday night.

Firstly I would like to offer a huge thank you to everyone who placed submissions against the building of the NBN tower at Reserve Road, Peachester.

Thank you to Adam DeLuca who has been driving this campaign based on the fact that 1.The tower is practically going to be built just over the fence from his property, 2. His dad is extremely unwell, 3. He has a young family and a duty to of care to the community and long term future of this great place we live in.

Thank you to Ryan Williams, Head of NBN Local Queensland, who tried to explain the safety of the NBN towers and network. Interestingly, while he stated that “no short or long term health effects have been shown to occur”, there was no actual details or clarification of how many years “long term” actually means.

Let’s be realistic; we were also told that about asbestos and PBA in plastic bottles.

Can anyone tell the people of Peachester whether they will receive the full benefits of this type of technology? NBN already has many complaints.

Slow speeds, drop outs, no connection and added costs to the consumer for a start. Will everyone receive NBN fixed wireless network?

Are all Peachester properties in “line of sight” of the tower?

What happens if they aren’t?

What actually is the real financial cost?

Could Ryan Williams please explain if this tower is erected, what should all the residents expect and receive.

a perfect scenario and what we all want, but it’s not going to happen. The Liberal Coalition have stated that the only fibre-optic system we will get in Australia is “To Node”. The node or “junction box” will be out in the street.

The connection to your home will be via the existing copper wire. So, we go from 21st century technology in the street back to 20th century technology in the home.

This is not what the Kevin Rudd administration promised us: fibre optic to all the homes in Australia.

The backpedalling was imposed on us by the current government because of “cost blow outs” in implementing the NBN roll out.

So folks can whinge about the towers as much as they like, but it’s the towers or nothing for most of us in rural Queensland whether we like it or not.

I dislike politicians of all types because the majority bend with the political breeze. It seems that the people who pay their wages are not considered worthy of the expense of a proper communications system that suits the demands of modern Australia and which is standard for most first world countries.

Are we turning into a fascist country where politicians can dictate to us?

Our politicians cannot be trusted to deliver what is asked of them efficiently and professionally.

They spend millions on a postal vote on a subject that is all about equality of the people.

That should have been handled as day to day business. Why not spend money like that where it is needed, like the NBN, where the majority of Australians benefit?

I for one am getting tired of being treated like a mushroom and fed the endless ‘BS’ from Canberra.

MP pushes for school zone lights

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has been campaigning for many years on behalf of the Peachester and Glass House Mountains communities to get flashing school zone lights installed at their schools.

Andrew said that Peachester State School is located on a busy tourist and truck traffic route and members of the school community have repeatedly asked for flashing lights to remind drivers a school zone is approaching.

Similarly the Glass House Mountains school community has been fighting for this safety measure to be re-installed at their school and Mr Powell’s requests to the State Minister have fallen on deaf ears.

Andrew is calling on the Government to “stop playing politics with our kids’ lives and to match the LNP’s commitment to install flashing school zone lights at Peachester and Glass House schools as a matter of priority”.

He said he made a very clear commitment to the Peachester and Glass House Mountains communities to fight for these flashing lights and will continue to advocate on their behalf until they are installed.

NBN commentary

It is somewhat ironic and maybe not surprising that an Astrologer and Feng Shui practitioner is providing much of the opposition in the Hinterland to NBN activity.

This is an interesting background from which to source scientifically balanced relevant information.

Mr Giles’ most recent contribution spent half defining the notation of the metric system of measurement, but then used astrological-like clarity in his commentary. It contained no reasoned argument; but rather non-specific, suitably vague detail relying on inference from selective reference.

So readers, please put his commentary firmly into that perspective. Please also recognise that there are many well-credited and credible professional authorities in place in our society that exist to ensure safe, practical and balanced employment of public services.

Things2Do Something new at Maleny market

This year the Maleny Sunday Market is developing a new concept.

Each week between 10.30am and 11.30am two of the talented stall holders will deliver talks and demonstrations about their craft and products to market visitors.

On March 11 and 18 the first stall holders who will be featured will be potter Judy Gardiner, and Susanne Daley from GreenWitch Teas. Judy creates stunning pottery pieces that are individual in design and reflect her outgoing personality and she is happy to talk about her creative process and techniques. Susanne has a beautiful selection of herbal teas and would like to share her knowledge about their health benefits. These talks and demonstrations are free, so come along and learn something new and meet some lovely stall holders. Maleny Sunday Markets are held at the Maleny RSL Hall every Sunday from 8am to 2pm.

The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range will hold their Welcome to the Hinterland Dinner on Wednesday April 18 at Flaxton Gardens. Trivia night ‘craic’ing good fun Contributed by Sally Joyce The word ‘craic’ is a commonly used term in Ireland to describe news, fun, gossip, entertainment and enjoyable conversation. It is derived from the word ‘crak’ meaning "loud conversation and bragging talk".

This is a fitting description for the next Ellie, Isla, Rhiana and Ashur with Peachester Community Trivia Night to the fruits of their school-grown be held on St Patrick’s Day, Saturday popcorn harvest March 17, at the Peachester Hall.

It also describes the school’s latest popcorn harvest and kitchen lesson.

The Trivia Night will be hosted by Peachester State School P&C with all funds going towards the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation program.

These nights have become a key contributor in supporting this wonderful program at our school.

So what’s the ‘craic’ in our school kitchen and garden? Last week the kitchen was POPPING with fun and laughter as our children popped their first harvest of popcorn. In October 2017, the children planted the popcorn in the school garden.

They helped pollinate it, water it, pick it, dry it, husk it and the day finally arrived when they could peel the seeds off the cob and it POPPED! Hooray!

Then the children got to eat it! Cooking and gardening doesn’t get much more fun than that!

So that the children can continue the fun of gardening for eating, be sure to register a team (maximum 10 people) for the next Trivia Night.

Movies Art of film

Maleny Film Society is proud to announce that amongst its upcoming films, there are three that deal with an aspect of the lives of famous artists.

The first, Loving Vincent (March 10), is about the painter Vincent Van Gogh; the second, Final Portrait (April 7) deals with the Swiss-born painter and sculptor Giacometti, played by Geoffrey Rush, and the third, Faces, Places (April 21) documents a photography road trip undertaken by legendary French director Agnes Varda at the age of 89 when her vision is failing.

Loving Vincent was initially shot with actors in the conventional manner, then each of the 65,000 frames was converted to an oil painting on canvas, using the same techniques as Van Gogh and created by a team of 125 painters.

This extraordinary 2017 Polish film was written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman and has been nominated for multiple awards.

The directors have set out to demonstrate Van Gogh's own words, written in a letter the week before his death: "We cannot speak other than by our paintings."

The film explores the final weeks of his passionately ill-fated life and the mysteries surrounding his death. This ground-breaking approach to filmmaking produces a visually gorgeous and unforgettable effect, in the words of one reviewer, "breathtakingly beautiful".

In the Garden Peachester Horticultural Society Vegie Notes

Capsicum

In my patch, I find capsicum to be the most problematic to grow. That’s mostly to do with their susceptibility to root nematode problems, and my soil is a holiday haven for nematodes.

They are also fairly fragile in full sun, which will burn their leaves and scald the fruits too.

But if you can grow them, it’s highly worthwhile due to their cost in the shops (remember last month when I anguished about growing carrots which sell for only 99 cents a kilo).

Your soil needs to be fertile and well drained, with a touch of dolomite or lime added to drop the pH just below the seven mark.

Growing them from seed requires a soil temperature of over 20 degrees, so don’t leave it too much longer. Or you can buy a punnet of seedlings pretty cheaply.

I like to grow the seedlings on a bit in individual small pots before planting them out – say til they’re 15-20cm tall. That way can weed out the ones which are sickly and plant the strongest.

If you have nematode problems, it may be best to grow them in pots using potting mix rather than garden soil.

Capsicums are in the same family as tomatoes, so usual rules apply… don’t plant them in the same bed as you’ve just grown tomatoes; give them plenty of water and nutrients when they’re growing so that they can grow strong and healthy. But don’t (like you would with tomatoes) plant them deeper as they can develop stem rots easily. Watch this when you’re mulching too.

As they grow taller, you will need to stake them up, as the large developing fruits will be heavy and can cause the bush to topple over or snap off.

The dolomite you used to sweeten the soil will have added calcium which is important for good flower and fruit set. If you used lime, then side dress with a little gypsum to up the calcium.

Cut back on the nutrition as the fruits fill out, as you want their energy going into the fruits, not into making more leaves.

Hot weather (over 30 degrees) can affect fruit set – so growing at the end of summer onwards is a good idea. But if you’re in parts of the region which receive frosts, you’ll need to protect them in winter.

The fruit – just like tomatoes – is susceptible to fruit fly, so you can use the paper bag technique to protect them. This has the added benefit of stopping them from getting sunburnt too.

Most capsicum varieties start out as green fruits and change colour to the red, orange or yellow that you see in the shops. So pick them green if that’s what you want, or leave them to vine ripen and colour up.

If you struggle with normal capsicums (like me), you may do better growing sweet capsicums (the long horn shaped ones) or the small bell capsicums.

You can even try perennial capsicums which live up to five years and suit our sub-tropical climate (they are available from Green Harvest in Maleny).

With Patricia Bradford The February meeting was our AGM. Jeff Bodley, our treasurer, and Viki Blaik, secretary, were thanked for all their help and support throughout the past year, and thanks also went to Coral Beutel for chairing the meeting in the absence of our patron Margaret Ferris.

Pam and John Innes shared some of the highlights of their trip to the Cook Islands late last year, in particular the gingers and orchids in the local gardens.

A few members were having problems with pests, and Pam suggested trying Eco Neem Oil for mealy bugs, while Patricia has had success with using Confidor.

For deterring possums, Rob suggested boiling up tomato leaves in water, strain and use as a spray. Coral’s advice was to mix equal parts of methylated spirits and water to spray on Maidenhair ferns.

The winner of the competition bench for the year was Pam Innes with 180 points, second went to Patricia Bradford on 124 points and third went to Margaret Ferris on 101 points.

We had a great turn out to our February meeting, filling the Glasshouse RSL Hall with many lovely orchids. The wet weather has played havoc with many of our orchids, so we will see just how much over the coming months. Judges Choice this month was Susan and Michael Keegan's Renanthera Kalsom 'Chaya Praya’ (pictured right). This vandaceous epiphyte, native to the South East Asian region, puts on a brilliant display, flowering for long periods over the summer months.

Barung Landcare The Crow's Ash (Flindersia australis) or Australian Teak This is a fine evergreen rainforest tree that grows up to 40 metres high and can develop a buttressed trunk with age. It is a most adaptable and attractive tree although slow to get going and prefers a sunny position or partial sunlight. The high branches provide good nesting sites.

The new growth is a lovely bronze shade and abundant panicles of white or cream petalled flowers appear any time from August to February depending on the site. These are particularly attractive to the Orchard Swallowtail butterflies, as well as bees and other insects, honeyeaters and both the fruit and blossom bats. High branches provide excellent nesting and resting sites for birds.

However, the truly magnificent features of this tree are its seed pods.

They appear first as woody capsules up to 10cm in length. They are covered with blunt prickles and were used by Indigenous people as a sort of grater to peel the skin and dirt from tuberous root vegetables.

As they ripen and pop open, the seed pods split into five boat-shaped valves, still joined at the base: the pods then look a bit like starfish. These are great for floral arrangements and art projects, even Christmas tree decorations. The actual seeds ripen to release papery, 3 - 4 cm long, wing-like seeds which germinate readily if planted immediately. Alternatively, seeds can be stored in the fridge for a long time and remain viable.

Over the years I have had many people in my life who have inspired me, from kids’ church leaders, to teachers, my mum and dad, and the list goes on. And as they have inspired me to be a better person, my hope has been to do the same for others.

When I was about to write this column, the news broke of Billy Graham’s passing. For me, Billy Graham was one of those great men who inspire others, especially to find a faith in Jesus Christ.

So it is time to remember how Rev Dr William Franklin Graham Jr, commonly known as Billy Graham, inspired us.

Firstly, we must remember that although the world has lost a great warrior and evangelist, Billy Graham is now home with Jesus in Heaven.

Members of the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild have begun preparations for the upcoming Barung Maleny Wood Expo to be held again in the Maleny Showgrounds.

As well as having a display of members’ work in the Cattle Pavilion, the Woodies will again conduct a hands-on workshop for children where they will be joined by members of the Maleny Men’s Shed.

The Kids’ Workshop was conducted last year for the first time and proved to be a great success. It will be held under a large marquee on the Cork Oval. Woodies are currently preparing 400 wooden items for the children to finish off and take home. Ample supervision will be provided.

Thursday March 1: We had our first Monthly Medal for the year and, due to the heat and to the very wet course conditions, there were only 35 ladies. I must say the heat was draining and a few never got to the finish line.

Beerwah Golf Club Men and medley results Contributed by Roger Bonhomme Last Wednesday’s damp course limited the field to two divisions with golf carts to be kept to their paths. John Wuersching (hcp 12) didn’t mind the conditions at all, finishing with an excellent plus 5 in the medley par event to take out division one. He was probably feeling pretty good walking up 12 at +4. A nearest the pin and another plus just broadened the smile. Fellow 12 marker Peter Stephenson (Howlong) finished with +3 to take second on a countback from Alan Perham.

In division two, John Marsden (24) had a narrow win on +1, heading Theo Perkins (23) on a countback. The run down in both divisions went to a lenient -3.

Saturday’s March monthly medal was played under slightly drier conditions with a lift-cleanand-place rule in effect. The major problem for the field was the longish rough – it has been too wet for the roughs mowing to be completed.

Ian Mahoney (10) stayed out of the rough long enough to shoot a 68, giving him A grade by a shot from greens staff member Joel Boorer (7).

Chris Hudson (17) also found the short grass on most holes to record a B grade winning 67, beating Ray Lloyd (15) in to second place by two shots. Two more 67s took out C grade.

Alfie Hinson (30) tipped out Sam Williams (21) on countback.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Witta Wagtails played Kawana Kool Kats on Wednesday and although we lost 45 to 27 we had a good day and a lovely lunch. Thanks to team members Sonia, Janet and Claire and for Pauline who filled in.

Whistlers played at Yandina, against Bush Turkeys. It was a wet start with drizzling on and off and close games. But we played through and finished all the sets with a win. Score was 38-33 games, 5-3 sets.

Team was Donna Kuskopf, Maree Hooley, Liz Mellish and Brenda Warner.

The Wildcats were at home to Yandina. Light showers to start and ending with extreme humidity which took its toll. Pauline, Annie, Stacey and Libby did their best but couldn’t bring home the win, going down by 7 games.

Contributed by Ken Barker There was no play on our lawns on Saturday or Sunday last week because of rain. At one point on Sunday a red car was seen outside the lawn and also a pushbike, along with several distressed waterfowl, but no play eventuated.

On Saturday and Sunday, Ken Barker played at Bribie Island in the Mary Masters tournament winning three and losing three games. Mike Bertram from Caloundra won the event. Don McGilvray from Bundaberg was the runner up with that position only being decided in the last game between Ken and Don. Ken, Don, and Yuni Rowell (from the Gold Coast) won the ‘Best Break’ competition with breaks of twelve.

On Thursday, Ken and Helen Andrews played a hard-talking game, most of it in the shade of the shed. It was a hot day. The final score was Ken 5 and Helen 3.

Pennants are nearly upon us. The draft draws for both the Lochwood and Bray are published.

Apart from the pennants, third and fourth division players might find it fun and fruitful to play in a couple of weekenders. Details of these are in the tournament book in the clubhouse. Draft rules of the proposed ladder competition have been circulated. We will discuss them at the meeting on March 10.

Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30pm. On Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds.

Ngungun Triathlon Club Contributed by Peter Thorpe Ngungun Triathlon Club is very excited that one of their juniors, Sophie Wolfe, has been selected in the Queensland Senior School Triathlon Team.

This is an amazing feat considering the level of competition and effort required.

Sophie’s sacrifice and dedication enabled her to stay strong and focused in an event which pushes the athletes to extremes.

In February, Sophie completed the 750m swim, 20km ride, and 5km run in fourth at the state championships at Hervey Bay and gained automatic selection for the state.

All praise to Sophie on her hard work, and dedication to her selfcare.

The club wishes Sophie all the best at Nationals at Penrith in April. We know she will do the hard work over the next six weeks to be the best she can.

Saturday March 3: Hinterland Ladies, Glasshouse 1 vs Mapleton. It was a tough day with both the pairs and triples going down on both rinks.

Hinterland Men vs Mapleton – we were no match, with the away team winning all four rinks. Most of the clubs we are playing are putting their best players out on the green.

Premier 7s Division 3 Round 10 home against Kallangur: It came down to the wire but unfortunately we went down 2 rinks to 1 with the pairs having a big win. Dean Shaw went down 31-29 in the singles.

Premier 7s Division 4 Round 10 away against Kallangur: Di Hume and Wendy Platt had a 1 shot win in the pairs but the fours and singles both went down. It’s been a tough year for premier 7s. One thing we have noticed is the competition has vastly improved. Now a few weeks break before we start the men’s club pairs with the nominations open this Thursday.

Kerry Capern Day was another wonderful success.

The heat packed a bite but we managed to get through the day. The winners of the day with 2 wins + 16 were Nev Franklin’s team from Banyo.

Runners up with 2 wins + 12 were Chloe Runge, Chris Dougan, Di Garland and Jimmy Tatum.

Wednesday night barefoot bowls was another great night with a turnout of 40 players.

Winning teams were Amigos, Ben Bryce, Bridge Club, Mobile Kingdom, Sunstone and Krackerjacks. If you want to join in, all are welcome. Contact the club and you will be given a game.

We would love some new people to come and try. Paul Kemp is getting a little embarrassed at his continued success. The nights are great fun, where bowls interrupts meeting new people and enjoying a burger and a cold beer.

Be at the club 6 for 6.30pm, barbeque and bowls $13. We will put you in a team.

Friday Bowls was well supported with 17 bowlers enjoying some tough tussles in our regular Scroungers Competition, 2.30 for 3pm every Friday. Come and try. It is a draw bowls based game and all players are allocated a handicap. The aim is fun, playing draw shots only in this format of bowls. You are all invited to stay on for the club and sponsors’ draw.

Saturday afternoon was the club AGM. Reports given and future plans outlined. Audit report was excellent, which is a strong endorsement for the club governance. Thank you to all the Maleny community members who have helped the club in having a great year. Linking with all our sponsors and our positive attitude towards local first has been tremendous for us and the community.

We are particularly pleased by the walk-in response of people who have heard great things and thought they would come and see.

Any group is welcome to come and use our facilities. See how much fun your party or team building event could be over a few ends of bowls and a cold beer. Contact the club for your 2018 plans.
