FROM THE EDITOR WOOHOO! It’s December and we know what that means – we are now in the time of regular Santa sightings, across a big chunk of the world, but very definitely in our neck of the woods.

As someone without children, I am always interested in how parents explain the phenomenon of so many different Santa visits by very different looking Santas at this time of year.

Check out our Christmas News section this week to find plenty of opportunities to have a selfie with Santa, including at The Barrel at Clouds Vineyard, which is featured on the cover.

However, as much as I love reporting where locals can do a spot Santa spotting in the coming weeks, my favourite Santa sighting is when I see him involved in some water sport on Ewen Maddock Dam as you drive between Landsborough and Glenview.

Lighting up the mountains

By Jack Waters WE all love the sights and sounds of Christmas but some are guilty of indulging in the Christmas spirit a little more than most of us.

Fortunately, Beth and Chris Casey’s obsession with Christmas lights has been putting smiles on the faces of local residents for more than a decade.

Since moving to the Sunshine Coast region in 2005, the Caseys have lived in Chantilly Crescent Beerwah, Pacific Place Beerwah Heights, Coonowrin Road Glass House Mountains and have now settled in Alfs Pinch Road Beerwah.

When asked whether they considered how the house would look with Christmas lights before purchasing, the Caseys didn’t hesitate in saying it’s one of the first things they think about.

“It started off as a couple sets of icicles and it’s just escalated from there,” Beth said.

“The kids, of course, always love it but the adults do too. It’s a great way to connect with everybody. Some of our closest friends have come from doing these Christmas lights every year. We make a lot of the displays ourselves with timber cut outs and banners too.”

The Caseys have four children who get just as excited when December rolls around.

“In December they rarely watch television at all because they’re out every night greeting and catching up with people they haven’t seen in years. So, it’s really good for them socially,” Beth said.

The family is adamant that this year will be the biggest and best yet, with the lights turning on from December 1.

“They’ll be on just before 7pm each night until about 9.30 most nights. Closer to Christmas and weekends they will remain on a little longer,” Beth said.

Unfortunately, Peter and Yvonne Roeland will have a scaled back display on Marshs Road, Glass House Mountains this year due to unforeseen circumstances.

Peter said it took around 300 hours to set up their display so if they started now they wouldn’t be able to get it up in time for the festive season.

“We will be setting up some lights but more for testing new types of lights and layout of the new props,” Peter said.

Climate emergency recognised by council Aerial adventures at Currimundi

By Greg Brown SUNSHINE Coast Council has become only the second local government in Queensland, after Noosa Shire, to formally recognise it is operating under the conditions of a climate emergency.

At the recent council meeting on Wednesday, November 10, Division 10 councillor David Law was successful in achieving a unanimous vote on his notified motion regarding a climate emergency.

“The Sunshine Coast Council voted unanimously to support my motion that recognises we are in a state of climate emergency,” Cr Law said after the meeting.

“This motion signals decisive action by council to reduce greenhouse gas emissions urgently, accelerating the great work that is already being done.

“I thank everyone who, over the last two years, has encouraged and helped us to achieve this.”

The decision means that Sunshine Coast Council joins more than 100 local governments around Australia who have recognised that climate change is real and that it is imperative that more preventive actions be taken by everyone.

Cr Law provided a powerful presentation on the need for the motion, stating that the prospect of

Councillor David Law climate change holds real danger for the Earth and its inhabitants.

“But it also provides a real opportunity,” he said.

“Looking back, we’ve simply not done enough. We are in an emergency and we may not even have ten years to effect the dramatic changes needed.”

The decision by council will not only recognise a climate emergency but will also require council to look at its operational structure and framework to determine ways it can strengthen its daily actions to address the climate emergency.

At the successful conclusion of the one hour and 45-minute debate, Mayor Mark Jamieson summed up by thanking Cr Law for getting the motion over the line.

“But thank you equally to all the councillors for your commitment and engagement in that debate,” Mr Jamieson said.

A $1.5 million aerial adventures high ropes course recently opened for climbing at the Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre at Currimundi.

Tourism and Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the 16m high aerial adventures fortress was a must-visit attraction for the entire family to enjoy these Christmas holidays.

“All up, there are more than 45 challenging obstacles and, if you’re brave enough to make it to the top, the spectacular views are well worth the climb,” Mr Hinchcliffe said.

Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt said the fortress added to a feast

of activities at the Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre this summer.

“I fondly remember spending many hours enjoying the recreation centre because this is where my dad worked for more than a decade,” Mr Hunt said.

“The aerial adventures course is new to the adrenaline-packed school holiday program starting on December 13 for young Queenslanders aged five and up, including rock climbing, archery, bodyboarding, canoeing and stand-up paddle-boarding.”

Tick for council but could do better on privacy and information

THE Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) last week tabled an audit report in the Queensland Parliament assessing Sunshine Coast Council’s compliance with the Right to Information Act 2009 (Qld) and the Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld).

The results were mostly encouraging but some areas of concern were identified.

OIC found that, although the council is committed to proactive disclosure and continuous improvement, significant gaps in information governance at the strategic and operational levels mean that its practices are not always consistent with the Acts.

Information Commissioner Rachael Rangihaeata made 22 recommendations in the report, which the council supports, and the OIC will monitor the council’s progress.

“I am pleased to see that the council took ownership of its information management practices and compliance by commissioning a review and developing a road map to improve how it governs and manages information,” Ms Rangihaeata said.

Specifically, Ms Rangihaeata said that the finding will ensure that the council

Of key concern is the finding that the council does not always give the community complete advice about right to information and information privacy, and lacks detailed policies and clear leadership to govern the effective operation and management of all its surveillance technologies.

The council has not yet embedded privacy impact assessments into its core business, with the OIC suggesting the council cannot be sure it has identified and effectively mitigated the privacy risks of its activities or projects.

Consequently, it was established that council had limited performance measures for monitoring progress in achieving the broader objectives of the Acts.

“Implementation of the audit recommendations will improve right to information and privacy practices and outcomes for the community,” Ms Rangihaeata said.

“The council will build trust through greater transparency as a result.”

By Lea Parkes Ursula said that once the branch was established, this could add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

“It really works. The Heritage branch at Palmwoods returned more than $100,000 to local groups in 2021 alone,” she said.

The committee is keen to keep the project moving forward and is calling on the community to pledge support by investing, to cover the initial set up costs, between $100 and $10,000, which will be repaid over (at most) a 10-year period.

The committee is in the process of setting up a Facebook page, which it will promote through the Glasshouse Country Voice Facebook group, to keep locals interested in supporting the concept up to date.

Logging to start in Beerwah State Forest

By Greg Brown THE Queensland Department of Environment and Science is charged with the custody and management of state forests through the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) responsible for commercial forestry within native forests.

The forest products division of DAF has announced plans to log suitable trees from the Beerwah State Forest between Ewen Maddock Dam and Steve Irwin Way. QPWS has sent advance advice notices to groups using the forest for recreation, such as the Sunshine Coast Bushrangers Mountain Bike Club, and signs have been posted at some public entrances explaining that access to the forest will be restricted as a result.

The 130ha compartment of forest will be logged over a 12-month period with a start date yet to be determined, according to a DAF spokesperson.

“Target species include blackbutt, white stringybark, tallowwood, red mahogany, ironbark, flooded gum, turpentine and grey gum,” spokesperson said.

“Tree selection will be guided by product type, such as sawlogs for

processing into sawn timber, poles for use in power infrastructure and girders for road and rail bridges.”

The area was last selectively logged in the mid-1990s and it is likely this will be the last time trees will be taken from the area.

The South East Queensland Forests Agreement signed in 1999 has determined that all timber cutting in State Forests within the regional planning area will end on December 31, 2024, with State Forests transitioning away from the Forestry Act 1959 into the protected area estate managed under the Nature Conservation Act 1992.

The planned harvesting operations will be undertaken following the protocols set out in the ‘Code of practice for native timber production on Queensland’s State Forest Estate 2020’, meaning that conditions are established to protect the environmental values of the land.

“Measures will be in place to protect biodiversity, forest health, soil, water, cultural heritage and other values, as detailed in the code of practice,” the departmental spokesperson said.

“The code limits land disturbance for tracks and log landings, and requires

that areas are closed and rehabilitated to allow regeneration once harvesting is complete.

“Protected trees will be excluded from harvesting and the code requires at least 50% of trees on the site to be retained.”

A quick read of the 110-page code shows that buffer zones, set-backs and filter zones are designated to protect Ewen Maddock Dam from impacts during harvesting.

The code protects threatened species and endangered ecosystems, stating that clearing is not permitted in “endangered regional ecosystems” and protective measures are to be applied if threatened species are known to be present.

As the forest is within the greater glider habitat range, six habitat trees and two recruitment habitat trees are to be retained per hectare on top of other tree retentions.

Trees where any native fauna is visible must be protected from harvesting or harvesting damage until the animal moves out of danger of its own accord.

Tree loggers are responsible for inspecting trees for the presence of native animals. Feed trees and trees with active nests are also to be protected.

When asked if the 50% tree retention figure meant that half the forest was to be cleared, the DAF spokesperson said that the value relates to 50% of the total basal area of trees in the forest, which is the cross-sectional area of all trees measured at 1.3m high.

“Larger trees have a much higher basal area than smaller trees, so if you harvest a large tree you need to ensure there are more small trees remaining on the site,” the spokesperson said.

“For example, for each 40cm tree harvested, at least four 20cm trees need to be retained, or 16 10cm trees need to be retained.

“During harvesting operations, the retained trees include a range of large and small trees.”

Gold medal for local coffee project Great local pies and sausage rolls!

THE Glasshouse Mountains Coffee Project (GCMP) has scooped the pool at the recently announced Sydney Royal Fine Food Show with a gold in the latte or piccolo section and a broze medal in the espresso.

The show is a competition designed to encourage and reward excellence, with the aim to support a viable and prosperous future in agricultural communities.

The winner of class 12 - 100% Australian grown, latte or piccolo section – from a field of 17 entries for Australiangrown coffee from a single estate was GMCP with its first-time entry in this prestigious show.

The shade-grown coffee top scored with 90.5, beating wellknown Di Bella Coffee and Campos Coffee, which both won silver medals.

GCMP grower and roaster Hamish Murray said that a particular focus on innovative fermenting processes plus caring for shade-grown trees in a biosphere that encouraged bees, birdlife and natural insect predators, had all added to their overall success.

By 2050, trends sshow that the amount o of coffee consumed w worldwide will increase b by 50% yet the available a and suitable land for g growing coffee will d decrease by 50%.

“It just shows, once a again, that the Glass H House Mountains area can grow new and emerging crops,” Hamish said.

IF you are a pie-loving Sunshine Coast local you will be familiar with Beefy’s Pies, which operates from nine locations across South East Queensland, including two local premises at Glass House Mountains on the highway and at Aussie World.

You might remember back in 2015 Beefy’s added gluten-free pies to its range, which proved popular with customers and, once again, this year with the judges of the 32nd Official Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition in Sydney.

Beefy’s was recognised as the winner in the best gluten-free pie in Australia for its Beefy’s gluten-free steak, bacon and cheese.

It also received a gold medal for its Beefy’s signature steak and Beefy’s Aussie special aka Ned Kelly pie (brekkie pie) and a silver medal for its steak and cracked pepper pie.

Beefy’s wasn’t the only local medal recipient in the competition.

Mayfield Patisserie and Chocolates at Montville was recognised in the top five for gourmet sausage rolls in Australia, receiving second place for its lamb, spinach and fetta, and third place for its port and apple, which is pretty impressive. It was also recognised with silver medals for its chicken, cranberry and brie, pesto chicken prosciutto and sundried tomato, and smoked chicken, mushroom and cheese sausage rolls.

The Official Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition was established by John Ross and Craig Perry in 1989. Their efforts and passion for pie excellence have helped to raise quality standards of pies across Australia; enhancing a sense of pride among bakers who specialise in pie making.

The judging panel consisted of TAFE trainers, chefs, bakers and bakery representatives who are all experts in their field.

They provide valuable feedback on each entry for aspiring winners. The competition is the industry’s benchmark for pie excellence.

Breakfast at Bassetts MEMBERS and guests of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce recently attended a member showcase breakfast at Bassett Barks.

Located on Mount Beerwah Road at Glass House Mountains, the business has been operating for more than 40 years and is one of Queensland’s largest landscaping and potting media supply companies.

At the breakfast Sue and Jeff Joseph shared stories about the business and did a quick tour of the 40ha facility.

The final chamber get-together for the year will be the huge event planned at the Mooloolah Valley Country Club on the afternoon of Sunday, December 12.

Blackall Range Lions Club still going strong IT’S been a big couple of years since the Blackall Range Lions Club became the hinterland’s newest Lions Club in November 2019.

Taking in the communities of Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton, the club provides an outlet for those who want to add a little bit more to their communities.

It’s the support of these communities that Blackall Lions marketing and communications chair Marcia Jensen says is integral to the survival of the group.

“I think our biggest achievement has been winning the trust and support of our local people and businesses,” Marcia said.

“They have been incredibly generous, selling our calendars and cakes, placing ads in the calendars, inviting newcomers to our welcome dinner, and so on.

“As we are a small club servicing an area with a small population base, we don’t really have any big achievements but we have completed a lot of small projects that have made a real difference in people’s lives.”

From spending several thousand dollars on grocery vouchers for school chaplains and student welfare workers to distribute to families struggling through COVID, to collecting money for the bushfire appeal and running information nights on cyber bullying at

local schools, the continued community support has allowed the group to do what its members do best.

The past couple of months have been particularly busy for the club, with members popping up and lending a hand at pretty much every community event in the area.

“More than 20 members, as well as some community members, contributed to the running of the Montville Art Sale from November 12-15,” Marcia said.

“We sold more than 40 artworks over the weekend and also held a very successful opening on Friday evening when more than 70 people enjoyed wine and canapes in the garden at Camphor Cottage.

“A similar number of members contributed to the running of the Welcome to the Hinterland dinner, and 12 members met to ice and decorate Christmas cakes.

“During the same four weeks we also held barbeques at the Festival of Small Halls and Mapleton Markets, and completed a couple of other small projects.”

The group currently has 28 active members but it is always on the lookout for more.

Members hard at work Each month members attend two meetings – a business meeting in Montville Hall and a dinner meeting at various venues. There are also plenty of group outings to keep members busy.

Support The Salvos on the Sunshine Coast THE Salvation Army is hoping to raise $3 million throughout Queensland in its annual Christmas Appeal to support Aussies doing it tough during the festive season.

Auxiliary Lieutenant Karen Clark of the Caloundra Corps said Christmas was the busiest time of the year for The Salvos and they expected this year to be no different.

“While Christmas is a time of joy and celebration for many, others doing it tough in our community find it an extremely difficult period for them personally,” Auxiliary Lieutenant Clark said.

“Anyone in need this Christmas can reach out to us at 119 Sugar Bag Road, Little Mountain or by calling 5491 8653 and we’ll do all we can to support you.

“We don’t want anyone to go it alone this year. If you need food, gifts, financial support or are feeling lonely, please get in touch with us.”

Caloundra Salvos will host a number of local events this year at its Sugar Bag Road site.

“We’ll hold a carols service in our outdoor chapel on Sunday, December 19 at 5.30pm, and a Christmas Day service at 9am,” Auxiliary Lieutenant Clark said.

“We’ll even enjoy an informal time of family worship on Boxing Day entitled Leftovers at 10am in our Mission Centre.”

The Salvos need the generosity of the public to support locals doing it really tough.

Christmas gifts with purpose MONTVILLE’S newest shopfront, Montville Marketplace, located next to Poet’s Café, is a curated space where local artisans’ wares are sold by Bloomhill Cancer Care staff and volunteers under commission agreements.

Bloomhill Cancer Care CEO Christopher John said the service was thrilled with the shop.

“It’s been a huge few weeks since we found this gem of a site and decided to open the shop in time for the Christmas rush,” Christopher said.

With the concept store blitzing its first weekend after opening on Saturday, November 27, Bloomhill is seeking more suppliers while Christmas gifts are at the forefront of the community’s mind.

“We have many ideal gifts and upcycled items here and people are snapping them up, with every dollar helping support those touched by cancer,” Christopher said.

Bloomhill retail network lead Russell Lindsay said he had been really trepidatious about the opening of this social enterprise but needn’t have been.

“Almost immediately when we opened we had people say that they wanted to be part of it – as volunteers and as suppliers - which is great because we have room for more,” Russell said.

“Please everyone spread the word!”

Bloomhill needs to increase funds to support the growing need of those touched by cancer across the Sunshine Coast.

Fine artist and former policeman Gordon Cramer of Buderim, who will have his work featured in the gallery, said he enjoyed the idea that his work would help Bloomhill to provide personalised support to those touched by cancer, having had several friends and family members affected.

“It means a great deal to think that being part of Montville Marketplace will in some way assist people with a cancer journey, because I know firsthand from my loved ones how difficult a journey that can be,” Gordon said.

FOR a long time, Maleny Library has regularly featured the works of local artists. We find it is a great way to celebrate the talents of our community and we do not charge commission on works sold. Recently, we had the good fortune to display floral art by well-known local arranger Meryl Marshall.

All the flowers in her arrangements come from her garden. We asked Meryl how long it took to put together one of her magnificent arrangements and she laughed that she never timed it. She might pick the flowers one day, arrange green stems and leaves the next, then pop the flowers in at the end.

Pictured is one of Meryl’s bright and beautiful displays that help to create a welcoming atmosphere as well as cheering up library members, staff and visitors, particularly during the current times of COVID-related stress and anxiety!

Meryl is also a regular member at Maleny Library who enjoys our collection of books, current magazines and DVDs on plants and gardens. You can enjoy these too, as

well as Meryl’s art, at Maleny Library over summer. We look forward to seeing you soon.

What’s new w at the zoo TO coincide with his 18th birthday, Wildlife Warrior Robert Irwin unveiled three new statues that celebrate his love for wildlife and wild places.

The statues are of a common wombat, a northern hairynosed wombat and a southern hairy-nosed wombat. All are on display for zoo guests to view and enjoy.

Robert passionately spreads the message about wildlife conservation through photography.

He recently judged the 2021 Crikey! Magazine Photography Competition, which recognises brilliant photographers from around the world to encourage more people to capture the beauty of nature.

A Christmas pet is for life

IF you plan to buy a pet as a gift this Christmas remember that owning a pet is a lifetime commitment and a major responsibility that lasts long after Christmas Day. When considering buying a pet as a gift you need to be absolutely sure that the person or family receiving the pet will commit to its lifelong care.

Think about the costs of caring for a pet, how much free time the person receiving the pet and their family have to spend with it, and if will it suit that family in the years ahead.

Cute puppies can grow into large adult dogs that need lots of exercise, training and veterinary care.

You can’t just send them back if it’s too much work and responsibility. We all have a legal obligation to look after animals in our care.

Before deciding on a pet as a gift this holiday season, you need to consider: • the cost of food, worming, annual health checks, vaccination, desexing, access to veterinary care, veterinarian bills, training, boarding, toys and bedding; • time available for walking, feeding and playing with the animal each day; • any restrictions on pets in rented premises; and • checking the Queensland Dog Breeder Register to ensure that you buy from a breeder with a valid supply number.

It’s panto time in Maleny

THE Maleny Players look forward to presenting their Christmas pantomime ‘The Princess and the Golden Casket’, bringing together well-known characters from fairy tales and rhymes in the quest by Princess Alice (Scarlett Hirt) to find the Golden Casket.

The drama revolves around who will find the casket first and unlock its powers.

The show opens on Friday, December 10 at 7.30pm with shows on Saturday, December 11 at 2pm and 7.30pm and on Sunday, December 12 at 2pm.

Drive like your life depends upon it RACQ has partnered with Bishopp Billboards to roll out more than 40 signs on some of Queensland’s deadliest roads to plead with motorists to ‘Drive Like Your Life Depends On It’.

RACQ spokesperson Kate LeonardJones said Queensland was already on track for one of the worst years for road deaths in a decade, with more than 255 lives lost so far.

“Families and communities are being ripped apart because of crashes, many of which sadly happen when drivers are tired or not paying attention, are speeding or fail to keep left on highspeed roads,” Ms Leonard-Jones said.

“Christmas is just weeks away and is one of our highest risk times for crashes with so many more Queenslanders travelling by car to be with family and friends.

“We need to remember each and every time we get behind the wheel to make sure we are up to the challenge of driving. Remember the importance of the Fatal Five [speeding, fatigue, not wearing a seatbelt, drug and drink

driving, and distractions like mobile phones] and recognise road safety is in our hands.”

Ms Leonard-Jones said the billboards would be on highways and local roads from Cairns, south to the Gold Coast, and inland across the Darling Downs.

“Drivers will see 16 of these signs along the Bruce Highway alone, where head-on and speed-related crashes are very common,” she said.

“The north coast region, which includes Wide Bay, the Sunshine Coast and Moreton, has had the highest number of fatalities in the state with more than 65 road deaths, followed by the southern region with at least 48 deaths. Both regions will have 12 campaign billboards each reminding drivers of the importance of road safety.

“We desperately hope this road safety campaign will reinforce to all motorists how important it is to make a conscious effort to drive safely each time we get behind the wheel, because it can be the difference between life and death,” Ms Leonard-Jones said.

HAVE you checked your tyres lately? Worn tyres can be particularly hazardous on wet roads. Tyre treads are designed to displace water so that your car gets a better grip on the road.

If you have worn tyres, even if they are only worn in some spots, you can greatly increase the chance of losing control of the vehicle especially in wet conditions.

With COVID restrictions looking set to ease and interstate borders reopening many of us will be looking forward to setting off on a welldeserved getaway. While there can be lots of competing demands on finances at this time of year, it’s vitally important to ensure your car is in good working order, especially if you are planning a road trip.

So far this year 261 lives have been lost on Queensland roads, 16 of them on the Sunshine Coast. With almost another month left in the year, these totals are already higher than last year, with two more deaths on the Sunshine Coast and the state total up by 14.

It may seem obvious but police need the community to report incidents when they occur. If you see something you believe may be an offence or that seems suspicious, please call Policelink on 131 444 or go online to report it. We would rather

receive the same information from six people than not be told at all.

The information we receive from the community helps us know if there are areas we need to focus our attention on. It may be that something is happening on a regular basis that seems odd, it could be a rowdy group in the park every Saturday. Don’t feel that you can’t report it because it’s not a big enough issue.

What happened to 2021?

Almost at the end of the year already. It was a year that saw us mostly confined to our state, which is not the worst thing that could happen when you live in Queensland. It also included a lot of face masks and the eternal hand sanitiser.

I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that at the start of the year I had high hopes that we would be well on the way back to a bit more normality but it looks like it might still be a fair way off. I hope that you all get to spend Christmas with family and friends despite travel still being a bit tricky.

Photographic exhibition at Vianta SUNSHINE Coast photographer Macdonald Hamilton will exhibit his diverse photographic works at Vianta Arts in Beerwah from Saturday, December 11 to Sunday, January 30.

Originally from NSW, Macdonald travelled to the Sunshine Coast in March 2020 to escape the COVID threat and was so amazed by the natural beauty and friendly people that he decided to fully relocate.

Macdonald was keen to explore and p photograph the h huge variety of n natural splendours h he found around h his new home.

His experience growing up on a farm near Orange, including swimming in the creek, riding horses, herding sheep and shearing, planted the seeds that would grow into a deep fascination with the natural world and its beauty.

Macdonald has worked as a professional photographer, predominately photographing products for advertising and architectural interiors and exteriors.

Council expands monitoring measures IF you see a strange new device in your neighbourhood that looks like a stack of upturned dinner plates, fear not – it’s not a UFO and it isn’t spying on you. It’s keeping tabs on ambient temperature and delivering data to help Sunshine Coast Council make smarter decisions into the future.

More than 50 environmental sensors were recently installed on council poles mainly in parks and on roadsides from the coast to the hinterland. They will keep close tabs on environmental conditions in these locations for a number of years.

The detailed temperature information that the sensors collect will enable council to further research the effects of increasing heat in our urban and peri-urban areas, enabling the council to improve future design decisions and develop better mitigation strategies for urban heat.

Environmental sensors for air, water and artificial light are already in place around the region to monitor important elements like temperatures at turtle nesting sites to ensure healthy hatchlings, in children’s playgrounds to monitor temperatures of play equipment and in our galleries to protect artworks.

Thermal imaging cameras are also used by council to collect data on temperature comparisons between asphalt, concrete, grass, canopy or shaded locations.

This information will be used to improve planning and design of public areas, such as the use of materials and colours that reduce heat and increasing canopy cover to provide cooler and more comfortable open spaces for our community.

The Human Trash Orchestra QUEENSLAND Country Women’s Association (QCWA) will award more than $30,000 in bursaries in 2022 to both male and female secondary and tertiary students in Queensland.

Applications are open for 22 bursaries, valued between $500 and $2,500, and close on January 31.

QCWA state president Sheila Campbell said the annual bursary campaign was one of the association’s great joys in being able to support the Queensland community.

“Education is a cornerstone of the QCWA, so we offer a number of bursaries every year to assist Queensland students with the cost of their studies,” Ms Campbell said.

With 2022 being QCWA’s centenary there are five new QCWA centenary bursaries for students in nutrition, agriculture, education, physical education and for an apprenticeship. Each of these new bursaries is for $2,500.

The idea is to create a street band using only instruments from recycled materials. A joyful protest street band is designed to help drive protest against the massive human footprint that is radically changing this planet and creating climate change. We want this protest to be fuelled by joy – the joy of music (one of the things that humans can be proud of).

The orchestra will be fluid. Its size will change. It will be made up of pods – small groups of people who can come together to make instruments and rehearse (or not). Any number of these pods can come together to create a music action. We already have 57 members.

Each player makes their own instrument. There could be instruments made from shopping trolleys, bicycles, wheelie bins and crutches, pots and pans, crockery, cans and cardboard boxes, toolboxes and spanners, bottles, jugs and glasses or a garden hose

and flowerpots. Everyone is responsible for their own instrument.

There will be mentors to help people design and make their own instruments and rehearse musical ideas. There will be someone who coordinates and conducts each Human Trash Orchestra performance.

There will be no regular rehearsal, there is no physical base. Geographic location – Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.

There is no need for money to change hands. We do it because we love to (we are amateurs in the true sense of the word). Anyone 16 years or over can join.

No experience necessary, just an enthusiasm to be part of this project and make and play your own instrument as part of a joyful protest band in the street at rallies, protests and flash mobs.

Invite for artists and creative folk GLASSHOUSE Art Spaces is a warm and inviting collaborative space for artists and creatives, from beginners to advanced, in the Glasshouse Country area.

They enjoy getting together to share ideas, seek constructive advice, foster growing awareness and appreciation for the arts and artists, and there is always something new to learn.

This year the group has been getting together for a laugh and inspirational activities on the first Wednesday of the month in Glass House Mountains from 10.30am - 2.30pm and the third Friday of the month in Beerwah from 9am - 1pm.

Rural Fire Brigade turns 30

We are pleased to support QCWA Beerwah,” Gabe said.

The QCWA is Queensland’s largest women’s organisation. It has thousands of members in cities, towns and regions state-wide. The QCWA vision is to support the women of Queensland through friendship, community and connection.

It was a wonderful afternoon with both past and present members and their families attending the event.

There were many stories told during the afternoon. However, there was a common thread that came across and that was what our brigade had achieved over the 30 years from when we started with a few knapsacks to our current fire-fighting vehicles, equipment and fire station.

Christmas NEWS NEW Christmas gifts for disadvantaged children

Making sure Christmas is a joyful time WOOLWORTHS Beerwah and Woolworths Maleny are part of an ambitious donation target to raise the equivalent of seven million meals this Christmas to support charity partner OzHarvest meet the growing demand for food relief across Queensland.

The Foodbank Hunger Report 2021, which looks at the prevalence of food poverty around the country, found that one in six Australian adults are now considered severely food insecure and more than half of the people impacted by food insecurity go a full day each week without eating.

Woolworths has committed to a donation of $500,000 to kick off the appeal. Local Woolworths customers can support the donation target in a number of ways, including buying a 50 cent token when they shop in-store or online, or choosing to round up their purchase to the nearest dollar, with proceeds going directly to the Christmas Appeal.

Another 50 cents will be donated from every limited edition OzHarvest Santa Cookie sold in-store.

LANDSBOROUGH Seventh-day Adventist Church members have been collecting toys, hygiene products, school supplies and fun gifts for inclusion in shoeboxes as part of Operation Christmas Child.

The gifts are sent through the Samaritan’s Purse organisation to children living in vulnerable situations overseas. The church collected enough donations to make up 44 boxes.

Woolworths Beerwah and Woolworths Maleny group manager Tabitha Millar said that for most local residents Christmas was a joyful time. However, for those who didn’t know how they would put food on the table, the holiday period could be an extra stressful time.

“We’re grateful for the generosity of our customers to help Australians in need, particularly during the Christmas season,” Ms Millar said.

“A little bit can go a long way to help feed a person or family and we encourage anyone who can give back to purchase a token or round up their purchase to the nearest dollar the next time they shop with us.”

OzHarvest delivers fresh and nutritious food to more than 1,600 charities that help feed vulnerable people and consistently sees high demand in the lead up to Christmas.

Magic at festive garden IMAGINE crossing the threshold of Fri-Tues a magical wonderland where you are greeted by elves, serenaded by carollers and the night is aglow with a forest of twinkling lights. Step forward and enter The Festive Garden.

Bookings are open for Sunshine Coast Council’s latest Christmas offering, which will see the Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens in Tanawha transformed into a Christmas wonderland from December 17-21.

The walk-through experience is free and a great way to get into the Christmas spirit with beautiful lights in a magical setting, face painting, Santa, elves, entertainment and food trucks.

Getting to the event is simple thanks to a free parkand-ride service but bookings are essential. Visitors should allow 1.5 hours on site for a truly magical experience.

The council is expecting thousands to attend this new festive experience so, to ensure they can accommodate everyone, it has teamed up with Sunbus to deliver a free shuttle bus.

Buses will run continuously between the University of the Sunshine Coast and the Botanic Gardens from 5.30pm, with the last bus returning at 9pm each evening.

Visitors should park at the university, 90 Sippy Downs Drive Sippy Downs, and wait for a free shuttle bus to take them to the experience.

The last bus will leave the university at 8pm and the travel time is about 12 minutes each way.

Visitors can come and park their cars and walk around the trail of thousands of lights around the building and in the surrounding grounds that leads to a single Christmas tree inside the building that is dedicated to Range Care.

After you have wandered around, you are welcome to sit and contemplate and share a fresh brewed cup of tea or coffee while the kids enjoy the supplied activity kits.

Along with the volunteers from the church and community who have been involved with organising the event and preparing the gardens and displays there has been support from Maleny Rotary Club, Maleny Garden Club, Girl Guides, Mens Shed, Range Care, Vintage Car Club, Probus, as well various arts and craft groups.

Range Care is the recipient of any funds raised.

The local not-for-profit organisation was established in 1986 and offer a full range of in-home, social and respite support services to encourage people to live independently. See ad page 24.

Carols on the Lawn MALENY Baptist Church will host carols Sunday on the lawn, an outdoor event for the whole community, on the Sunday before Christmas, December 19, from 5–7pm.

A word from John McGrath – WILL THE HOLIDAY HOME REPLACE THE HOLIDAY? Demand for regional property is surging as local buyers upgrade their homes and tens of thousands of city dwellers relocate to the regions for a lifestyle change as they’re able to work from home.

There’s also a third group boosting competition for regional properties – holiday home buyers. Their motivation is two-pronged – secure a safe holiday destination for their families to enjoy during the COVID-19 era, and leverage ultra-low interest rates to invest in booming regional markets.

As discussed in our McGrath Report 2022, the significantly increased competition for regional homes is resulting in exceptional price growth that even outpaced the cities by a significant margin in FY21.

Regional NSW home values rose 21.1% vs Sydney 15%, regional Victoria 15.9% vs Melbourne 7.7% and regional Queensland 17.1% vs Brisbane 13.2%, according to CoreLogic figures.

These capital gains are making the concept of buying a holiday home more appealing. City dwellers can buy a comparatively affordable property, receive a very reliable rental income

due to the popularity of home sharing platforms, and ride the wave of capital growth occurring in holiday hot spots today.

A survey commissioned by ING shows 32% of today’s investors are considering buying property in holiday towns compared to 30% targeting the inner city and 37% preferring outer city areas.

The key motivators for investing in holiday towns include value for money (50%), the ability to use the property as a personal holiday home (28%) and taking advantage of the burgeoning holiday home rental market (25%).

The history of Australian holiday homes can be traced back to the late 1800s, when many wealthy families owned substantial holiday houses in popular beachside areas.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the ‘weekender’ gained popularity as mass car ownership allowed the middle class to discover less crowded vacation spots, where they typically bought basic fishing cabins.

Between the 1960s and 1980s, the appeal of holiday houses declined as working women demanded a proper vacation instead of merely “a change of kitchen sink”.

The emergence of resort hotels in Australia, Fiji and Bali encouraged shorter but more luxurious holidays built around services and activities, according to tourism historian, Richard White.

Today, a humble fishing cabin is less likely to satisfy middle class buyers.

Many are seeking higher quality properties in prime coastal locations, and this demand is changing local markets, not only through raised competition and higher home prices but also through gentrification.

The NSW Central Coast provides a case in point. The traditional go-to destination for Sydney families seeking an inexpensive break, the area saw surging buyer demand in 2020 for old stock to be ‘flipped’ into profitable Airbnb holiday homes in waterfront locations such as Avoca, Forrester’s Beach and Killcare.

The desire to spend more time away from cities, and to “holiday at home” in Australia instead of overseas (for now), is creating more interest in grander holiday homes with better amenities, too.

Some older buyers plan to convert their holiday houses into their primary homes upon retirement, so they are especially

CoreLogic data shows house prices in Australia’s most loved tourism hot spots are soaring. Annual growth is as high as almost 40% in Byron, 27% in Mansfield, Victoria, and 21% in Noosa.

In years gone by, holiday homes were never about a prospective return on investment. For many, lifestyle factors have always outweighed any possible monetary gains.

Whilst this attitude is changing somewhat, as property is increasingly seen as the best way to grow wealth, the big takeaway from the pandemic is the importance of a good work/life balance.

The holiday home embodies this new goal, so current strong demand looks likely to continue.

Aliens pushing Australian native wildlife to the brink AUSTRALIA is in the grip of an unprecedented alien attack, with experts warning of many more native species extinctions by 2050 unless urgent action is taken.

A new report, ‘Fighting plagues and predators: Australia’s path to a pest and weed-free future’, highlights a looming wave of devastation. It outlines two futures for Australia – one based on an unsustainable business-as-usual approach and the other based on implementing targeted actions that will help save our unique biodiversity.

The report, a cooperation between the CSIRO and the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions (CISS), pegs the conservative cost of damage caused by invasive species in Australia – predominantly weeds, feral cats, rabbits and fire ants – at $390 billion over the past six decades and around $25 billion each year and growing.

Report co-author and CSIRO scientist Dr Andy Sheppard said that while many Australians were aware of the havoc caused by the recent mouse plagues in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, they had no idea of the magnitude of the invasive species issue for Australia.

“Urgent, decisive, coordinated action is crucial to stopping the spread of invasive species,” Dr Sheppard said.

“Prevention will be much cheaper and more effective than trying to control the spread of pests and weeds once they are established.”

Co-author and CISS chief executive Mr Andreas Glanznig said that climate change, international trade and travel movements, and extreme weather events such as floods, fires and drought had driven the spread of invasive species.

“The challenge is for all Australians to work together to stop the problem from getting worse,” Mr Glanznig said.

“Together we can work to drive down Australia’s native species extinction rate – currently over four species a decade – towards net zero extinctions.”

Globally, invasive species are ranked as the fifth greatest issue facing the environment. However, in Australia it is the number one issue, with invasive species having contributed to the extinction of 79 Australian native species.

The single biggest vertebrate menace to native species is the European rabbit, which infests twothirds of Australia, followed by feral cats, pigs, foxes and cane toads.

Invasive plants also cause havoc. Australia now has more than 2,700 established weed species, which grows by 20 new species every year, or one new weed every 18 days.

• Cane toads have invaded more than 1 million square kilometres of Australia.

• From 1960 to 2017, invasive species cost Australia at least $390 billion.

• Grain growers spend more than $2.5 billion a year on weed control.

• Feral cats and foxes have killed off 25 native mammal species.

• Just four pests – rabbits, feral pigs, cats and a plant pathogen – endanger 800 threatened species.

• More than 2,700 weed species make up 12 per cent of Australia’s flora.

One year on

November 25 brought to a close my first year as the Member for Caloundra and it has brought home to me what a genuine joy it is to be the MP for the town I grew up in – very few MP’s get that privilege. Glenview Road update

Council has finished a complete reconstruction and upgrade of Glenview Road for about 800m east of Tolson Road. Next financial year, the council will begin stage five works, which includes the section between Tolson Road and Old Gympie Road. There has also been a slight delay in refurbishment and asphalt sealing of Glenview Road between Clinton Court and Frizzo Road, Glenview. These works have been deferred until roughly March 2022 due to the Department of Transport and Main Roads carrying out works on Frizzo Road as part of upgrading the Bruce Highway to six lanes between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway. I will keep you informed with progress on these jobs.

AT my Sunshine Coast Veterans Day, held on November 18, almost 550 veterans enjoyed a free day out at Australia Zoo and reconnected with their mates after a difficult year of social isolation. It was a fantastic day and I want to thank all the veterans who attended, the Irwin family for their generosity in opening the zoo to local former serving men and women, and the Minister for Veterans Affairs Andrew Gee, who joined us virtually for a veterans’ roundtable with local RSL sub branches on the day.

THIS festive season why not give the gift of life by donating blood at one of the local Red Cross Donormobiles in the lead up to Christmas. It’s the season for giving so be part of Australia’s biggest Secret Santa program.

It’s a free, heartfelt way to give back to the community that can make a real difference to someone’s life and it will only take about an hour of your time.

The Red Cross Donormobile will be at the Maleny Showground on December 20-21 from 7am-2pm (Monday) and 11.30am-6pm (Tuesday), and then Beerwah on December 22-24 from 10.30am-3.30pm (Wednesday), 11.30am-6pm (Thursday) and 7am–1pm (Friday) at 39 Simpson Street, near the

Shell service station at the Coochin Creek Co-op. Parking is available at both locations, with public transport easily accessible in Beerwah.

Many people don’t realise that donated blood can be made into 22 different medical treatments, with a third of blood donations used in treatments for people with cancer.

Make sure you drink at least three good-sized glasses of water or juice before you donate and that you have eaten something in the three hours leading up to your appointment.

Have you got old prescription glasses sitting around in a drawer? You can donate them for reuse via Lions Recycle for Sight Australia. Running for 26 years and based in Queensland, this program has delivered more than seven million pairs of refurbished glasses to people in need overseas.

Specsavers Beerwah, Maleny Optical and the Landsborough Chemist are local collection hubs where you can drop off unneeded glasses to give them the chance to be reused.

Are you ready for storm season?

ENERGEX crews are all set for summer and they are urging Queenslanders to ensure they too are prepared for the impact of severe storms, floods, cyclones and bushfires.

Energex executive general manager operations Paul Jordon said extreme weather events could leave people housebound and without power for days.

“You need to consider the needs of everyone at your place, including babies and pets,” Mr Jordon said.

Emergency kit: essential items

“Think about how much drinking water and non-perishable food items you’ll need for your household, as well as prescription medication.

“A battery-operated radio will allow you to stay in touch when your mobile phone runs out of charge or if telecommunication services are impacted.

“Fill your gas bottle if you’re going to be using your barbeque. Check your fuel supply if you’re using a generator and make sure it’s in good working order.”

Mr Jordon said falling trees and branches could bring down powerlines, which could be hidden in the debris.

“We urge everyone to take care and stay line aware when they’re cleaning up after a storm,” he said.

“If you see any fallen powerlines, always stay well away, warn others and report this life-threatening hazard to emergency services on 000 or call us on 13 19 62.

“If you see any trees growing into powerlines, report that to us as well because pruning near the electricity network is a job for trained professionals.

Don’t be tempted to do it yourself and risk getting hurt or worse.”

Queenslanders can also help by checking their own backyards and securing or stowing outdoor items that could become dangerous projectiles in strong winds.

“Trampolines, outdoor furniture, beach umbrellas and sheets of corrugated iron pose a serious threat to property and people if they become airborne, so check your yard for potential hazards,” Mr Jordon said.

HAVING an emergency kit is an important step to prepare for, survive and cope with emergencies.

Make sure you check and update the contents of your kit regularly to ensure everything is in working order and has not expired.

Discuss your emergency kit with all householders and make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

Below is a list of items that should be in your kit at all times.

Perlite and vermiculite SOMEONE recently asked me if perlite was a natural product, as it looks a bit like balls of Styrofoam.

Perlite is that snow-white, crispy, brittle rock-like stuff that you find mixed through some potting soils. You can buy it in bags to mix up and use at home. It can also be used in soil-less gardening such as with hydroponics.

Perlite is made by heating a specific type of mineral silica rock (funnily enough, called perlite) to a high temperature where it expands, like popcorn, by up to 20 times its volume.

The high silica content classifies the product as a form of natural glass.

This means that the final expanded perlite has a neutral pH, is sterile and is chemically inert, so it won’t adversely affect the plants that grow in it.

This is perfect for trying to strike cuttings, as the cut ends won’t pick up fungus and moulds from any potting soils. The free-draining nature of the mix also means that cuttings aren’t sitting in water and going rotten.

Vermiculite is a similar product and, like perlite, it too comes from a natural source.

Vermiculite is the mineral name given to an ore-like rock that is similar in appearance to mica.

Vermiculite has a higher water holding ability than perlite, so it isn’t usually solely used as a growing medium, as the plant roots may become water-logged.

It is mainly used as a soil mix, as a topping layer over seeds or as a clay soil improver.

Some gardeners like to mix the two together, in a ratio of one part vermiculite to three parts perlite, to create a rather good growing medium for striking cuttings and for hydroponic growing. You can also add this ratio to a good potting mixture to provide a good free-draining soil for container growing.

He doesn’t appear to have had terribly great care in his past, as he was very underweight, had hair loss along with dry skin, and hadn’t had proper nutrition before coming to us. He’s slowly putting on weight, and his skin is clearing up and fur growing back. Henry is a beautiful natured boy, loves being the centre of attention and deserves a home where he’ll get just that. Henry seems to be okay around other dogs he’s met and would like to meet any potential doggie friend. We’re unsure how Henry is with cats, children or livestock at this time.

On Sunday, November 21 four people had the multi-coloured lawn to themselves. Wallace has been spraying for oxalis and using red vegetable dye to mark his progress. There is no cause for alarm. It is not the red weed from ‘The War of the Worlds’. Lynette was meticulous against Stuart Craig winning 9–4, while Sarah beat Ken 14–10.

On Sunday, November 28 there was

extensive cloud cover, which meant cool and pleasant conditions for an interesting afternoon’s play. Donna Manning and Kath played an exciting singles game in which Kath edged ahead to win 8–7. Vince Carbery and Nick Cram teamed up to play a doubles game against Stuart and Ken, who won 11–5.

On December 15 we will want all able hands on deck to de-thatch the lawns for one of our most labour-intensive maintenance operations of the year.

Play days are Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm for a 2.30pm start. Contact Sarah for other days.
