hat a downpour we received on Friday! I can’t remember a time that I have seen that much water covering the roads at Beerwah and Glass House, and it all happened just so quickly.

With the power out, and crazy amounts of water flowing through the area, and hearing the devastating news of lives lost in the Moreton Shire, it is easy to see how quickly things can go horribly wrong and how dependant we are on the assistance of emergency services.

When I was trying to get out of Beerwah at about 4.30pm and back to Glass House, I heard plenty of sirens and flashing lights and you could see that in the semi darkness it was going to be a big night to get everyone home safely.

I reckon a big thanks needs to go out to all our local emergency services workers and volunteers who were on hand to keep us safe.

Local News Beerwah streetscaping complete Last week council craned in the final pieces of a major art installation in Beerwah’s transformed town centre, marking the end of extensive streetscaping in Simpson Street, as it prepares to upgrade the town’s ‘civic heart’ at Turner Park.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the five stones positioned by crane were donated by the local Holcim Sunrock Quarry and sculpted by Peachester artist Hew Che Fong.

“These stones are the last piece of the puzzle in the creation of Beerwah Tower Green, our new town centre on Simpson Street,” Cr Baberowski said.

“The positioning of the stones within the art installation represents the geographic positioning of the Glass House Mountains.

“Beerwah Tower Green also features three ‘butterfly towers’ made of recycled wood and old railway lines.

“The towers each stand at least 5m tall, provide shade over the area, and are designed to raise awareness of the Wildlife Warrior Hospital and the threatened Richmond Birdwing Butterfly.

Cr Baberowski said Turner Park is widely known as Beerwah’s green civic heart, and this upgrade is a result of extensive community consultation.

“Construction will include a new entry plaza with an arbour and welcome sign, picnic tables, custom seating walls which reflect and further extend Beerwah’s character, and landscaping.

“Work on Turner Park will start in May and is expected to be complete in July,” he said.

Challenging visit to Vanuatu

By Lea Parkes Over the past few years GC&M News have often reported on the regular fundraising efforts of Glass House Mountains couple Colin and Val Phillips, and their numerous trips to Vanuatu.

The couple have recently travelled to Vanuatu following the devastating Cyclone Pam. Their luggage was filled with food and toiletries kindly donated by Woolworths and Bargain Max of Beerwah, plus cricket gear, some kindly donated

by Jill Foster.

Val said it was great to see the trees finally getting leaves back on them, but the destruction was still very prevalent, some areas more so than others.

It was so sad to see the amount of damage, she said, however the people were still going about their day to day activities like nothing had happened.

“One village we went to, we were the first outside people to visit them, and it was not uncommon for there to be at least 17 people living under the one roof,” Val said.

What really disturbed the couple is even though they know that many Australian’s have generously made donations to charities, this isn’t necessarily being seen on the ground.

Val said she asked the locals about the shipping containers of canned food and tarps etc. that had been sent over. Apparently a lot of supplies are still sitting in containers waiting for the local government to distribute them.

What really concerned them is the ongoing availability of food. The small amount of food people still had growing was only going to last another couple of weeks, then they didn’t know what they were going to eat until the next crop planted was ready for picking, in about six months’ time.

Val believes if you want people to receive supplies, you have to physically go over with your donations and deliver it yourself. So if you’re thinking of travelling, the country could definitely do with the tourism dollars flowing in.

Val and Colin also let us know that while they have enjoyed being part of the local community for the past 13 years, it is now time for them to downsize, and they are relocating to Hervey Bay. They would like to thank everybody who have helped and supported their fundraising efforts.

McArdle takes aim at Main Roads The Department of Transport and Main Roads proposed plans for the new intersection of Steve Irwin Way, Bruce Highway and Caloundra Road continues to create controversy.

State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle said the Main Roads Department has recently lodged a ‘Project Referral’ with the Federal Department of Environment for works that will seriously impact on the Beerwah Forest, without telling the public or State and Federal members.

“The application must be made when there is, or is likely to be, a significant impact on any matters of national environmental significance,” said Mr McArdle.

“The application is made and the Federal Minister or his delegate determines whether the proposed action will need formal assessment and approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999).

“The Main Roads Department is not required to formally notify the community of their application having been filed but I would have thought given real community concerns about the damage to the forest, this should have happened as a matter of course.

“The community deserves to know and I would have thought the local members would have been told,” he said.

The Department filed the referral on April 20 and interested parties had until May 5 to comment on whether they think the project is likely to have a significant impact on matters of national environmental significance.

“Further we need to tell the State Minister for Main Roads of our objection to the approach of the local office and urge that he support a full assessment under the E.P.B.C Act,” said Mr McArdle.

The Minister can be contacted at mainroads@ ministerial.qld.gov.au The Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) have been leading the push to protect the environmentally significant forests from the start of the project, when the previous LNP government commenced the road construction process, and they now continue their fight for the project to be reassessed.

SCEC spokesperson and campaign coordinator Narelle McCarthy says that they are busy now going through the EPBC referral documents.

“We’re disappointed that some of our previous concerns and positive suggestions have not been addressed by the Department in their planning or their EPBC submission,” said Ms McCarthy.

“The planning has shown a lack of regard for the protection of recognised species and habitats of significance within the forested areas, and we are again alarmed at the poor flora and fauna survey data that the Department are relying on.

“These and other issues highlight some gaping holes in their planning methodologies,” she said.

“We are also adamant that alternative plans are feasible where the impacts would be lessened to almost zero.

“But Main Roads remain steadfast in their refusal to consider them.”

With ANZAC Day being commemorated last weekend, Maleny local Alice Smith has an interesting and personal account about her overseas visit to the Tower Of London late last year to view the major art installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’.

Marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, 888,246 ceramic poppies encircled the iconic landmark in a dramatic installation created by artists Paul Cummins and Tom Piper.

This incredibly moving and poignant display featured a hand created poppy for each allied life lost during the war. Alice visited the display in September last year to honour the memory of her great uncle, George Dare who died aged just 22 of head injuries during WW1 on October 18, 1917.

“The display was very sad and moving and it was just a fantastic effort. It looked like a sea of blood and was a very effective way of symbolising the fallen,” said Alice.

Every poppy that made up the installation was sold and Alice was fortunate to purchase one

George Dare originally came from the Galway Downs Station near Charleville and initially served in the 11th Light Horse regiment before transferring to the 11th Field Artillery.

He is buried in the British Nine Elms cemetery.

Last week Alice travelled to Charleville to present a display to the Charleville RSL that she had put together to mark her great uncle’s life that included a special painting that Alice had done of George incorporating poppies and gum nuts, photos of the field of poppies and framed articles of military service and personal details.

She will also present the ceramic poppy which is about the size of a small side plate to the RSL for their permanent collection.

Friday afternoon chaos Late on Friday afternoon as I drove in to Beerwah from Glass House around 2.30pm, there was quite a bit of water around, particularly at Turner Park, which I wasn’t surprised by, as this generally does happen in heavy rain.

However I am sure I wasn’t the only one who was really unprepared for the amount of flood water that would start to flow across the roads in the next few hours.

Later that night and over the weekend, I heard so many different stories from locals, everyone had a story to tell about what had happened to them.

There were cars that were washed away, where people needed rescuing, and sadly the community of Elimbah this week are grieving the loss of local community members.

It seems that we are all really aware of our local spots that go under during heavy rain, but it was that so many locations went under water, not just the locations we would have anticipated, which added to the challenge of people being able to make the journey home.

Speaking to Robert Barry our Glass House Mountains SES First Officer on the weekend, he said that our local SES group received more calls for assistance than Maroochydore and Caloundra combined.

Beerwah local John Jennings said that his neighbour John Walton, who was born in the Beerwah area, says he cannot recall Coochin Creek ever rising so high onto the properties on Old Gympie Road, as it crosses into Peachester Road.

The bridge over Coochin Creek on Steve Irwin Way was closed from Friday night and thankfully was reopened over the weekend, much to the relief of those that rely on it.

A car ended up in the Coochin Creek bed downstream from Old Gympie Road from Walton Bridge, and the next day the Clayton's towing team described it as one of their most difficult jobs in terms of access and hauling out a vehicle.

Many rail commuters endured lengthy delays from Brisbane. John’s son Tim left work in Brisbane at 5.00pm and his train stopped at Petrie. Along with some 50 passengers who had been travelling as far as Nambour, Tim was forced to wait at the station for about five hours until a bus could get through, they were taken as far as Elimbah, then caught the train north arriving home at 1.30am.

This was one Friday night trip home from work that none of us were expecting and we definitely don’t want repeated.

Ahoy me hearties

Contributed by Helen White Coonowrin Kids Playgroup went on their first excursion to the Beerwah Library last week.

We travelled to and from by train, which was very exciting for the children.

We were alerted to the train’s arrival by the Glass House Mountains conductor saying ‘Ahoy ye pirates, I think I can see your pirate train coming’. We then walked to the library where the staff were all dressed for our arrival. The children thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story teller and making pirate hats and some even got to borrow some books and DVD’s.

We then had lunch in the park, followed by some pirate games and of course a treasure hunt.

Team Shagadelics enter this year’s Sh#tbox rally

By Sonia Clark With over one million dollars raised already this year, the annual sh#tbox rally gets underway this Saturday, May 9 - raising much-needed funds for the Cancer Council.

Local Maleny participants, Jenny and Doug Henderson will be revving up their brightly painted Mitsubishi Express van as they travel as team ‘Shagadelics’ over the 3,6000km course from Canberra to Townsville via the Birdsville Track and Simpson Desert.

With green, orange, purple and pink flowers all over what was originally a white vehicle, Jenny and Doug have already raised over $8,000.00 in local support.

Those who have made a donation have personalised the flowers with names and sometimes heartfelt messages that will travel the distance.

Jenny and Doug had wanted to join the rally for ages, and so when registration came up for the hotly contested 200 available places, they jumped on-board straight away.

Having to register a name on the spot, Jenny suggested ‘Shagadelics’ having recently watched an Austin Powers movie!

While this is their first rally, every year the family supports a cancer cause, as they like many others, have been personally impacted by the disease. Their young daughter Lily has been lucky

to survive nerve cancer twice and the family is still battling the disease with family members and loved ones as well as the memory of those who have passed.

At the end of the rally the cars will be auctioned off and the proceeds put towards the teams tally. Jenny and Doug plan to do an even bigger fundraiser next year and they would like to thank everyone who supported them in Maleny for this cause that is so close to their heart.

Get your gumboots on!

By Sonia Clark With this year’s Maleny show fast approaching, one of the show’s fun participation events that always proves a big hit with the crowds is the Sommer’s Fuel Gumboot Ironman contest. Open to everyone over the age of 12, the event will be held on the show Saturday May 30 at approximately 4.00pm, and consists of teams of four all wearing gumboots competing against each other in various ‘challenges’ over a set course.

This is sixth year that the event will be run and previous years have seen teams from a variety of local community groups and businesses as well as individuals.

Past competitors have included teams from the Maleny Dairies, the local fire brigade and even the Maleny showgirls! Cash prizes are on offer with $200.00 up for grabs for the winning team, $120.00 for second prize place and $60.00 for the third prize place winners. Nomination fee for the event is $40.00 per team of four and all entrants must wear their gumboots throughout the event!

Entry forms can be found in the show schedule, or can be downloaded from the website. Alternatively teams can register by going to the show secretary’s office at the showgrounds and competitors have until 1.00pm on the show Saturday to register.

This year if your team consists of two males and two females aged between 18-25 and you win - you may then be eligible to represent Maleny in the Sub Chamber final and then possibly the state finals held at the EKKA as part of the Farmers Challenge Competition.

Watoto Children’s Choir visit Beerwah

Contributed by Sandy Johnson Recently the Watoto Children’s Choir from Uganda, Africa visited Glasshouse Christian College for three fabulous concerts.

The children arrived after a long bus journey from Hervey Bay and promptly began cheerfully greeting people and preparing for their concert. Once the children were on stage they were transformed from shy, quiet children to lively, vibrant performers.

The concert is a brand new production for 2015 called ‘Oh, What Love’ and is a salute to a new Africa. It takes you on an emotional journey from utter despair to joyous celebration as the children share their stories through dance, song and testimony.

The children’s energy was contagious and selected Glasshouse Christian College students were invited on stage to dance with them for one of the songs.

Two concerts were held during the day for the College students and then at night a special concert was opened up to everyone. Glasshouse Country Baptist Church was packed to the rafters for the Friday night performance. After each concert the Watoto Children lined up outside the church and ‘high-fived’ the students and adults as they left the building.

All of the Watoto children are orphans and in Uganda they live in families of eight children with an assigned ‘mother’. Each family lives in a small community and all the children go to school. The organisation relies on child sponsorship and donations for support.

Boat People set up in Beerwah Heard drifting down Simpson Street Beerwah last Wednesday were the dulcet tones of Dawn Mackey and Norm Walker, travelling musicians and the core of the two-piece band ‘Boat People’.

Performing outside Pasta d’Vine, Norn and Dawn’s mix of 60’s, 70’s and 80’s music created a charming village feel for our newly renovated main street.

Norm and Dawn are on-the-road musicians, playing small gigs and ‘busking for a cause’ on their Australian Coffee House Tour to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Sue Schlapa from Pasta d’Vine said that they contacted her and asked if they could set up at the front and play for their diners and the passing shoppers.

“We were more than happy to have Norm and Dawn as our guests,” said Sue. “Their music is very good and they are genuinely lovely people who are using their travels to raise funds for a worthwhile cause.”

Norm and Dawn raised over $7,000 from their last jaunt from Victoria, to South Australia then up through Central Australia.

“We’ve left our cruising catamaran home moored at the Gold Coast and are making our way in a van to Darwin and back again, on a tour that will probably take about three months,” said Norm.

“We’re more than happy for any local cafe to contact us if they’d be willing to let us perform at their shop on our way back through the area.”

Bankfoot’s unknown treasures keep volunteers guessing It’s like a treasure hunt, except you already have the treasure – and you’ve just got to figure how valuable it is.

That’s the joyous challenge for Bankfoot House volunteers Ron Gillinder and Keith Pendell each Wednesday. They gather at the heritage-listed homestead along with many fellow travellers, to sort through the treasurechest of artefacts discovered on the Bankfoot property, the first homestead to be built in the hinterland.

“Nothing is brought in – this is a closed-house museum consisting solely of items found on this property,” Ron said.

“There’s a degree of satisfaction in restoring old properties like this – and we have come across some items we can’t identify; it’s fascinating to try and work out what they’re for.”

The pair have been part of the Bankfoot House restoration since its beginning in 2006.

Keith and his wife moved from the Northern Territory, and he has been involved with the project from scratch.

“I’d heard about Bankfoot and had an interest in history and heritage work, so I went to the first community meeting,” he said.

“I like meeting new people when coming to a new area. In the group we have similar but contrasting experiences and outlooks.”

Ron says he was looking to join a community group.

“I was interested in preserving old heritage, and Australiana. I’m a keen photographer so I have been recording things for cataloguing,” he said.

Volunteering at Bankfoot House has fulfilled both of their lives, and with National Volunteers Week running from May 11 to 17 this year, they both want to spread the volunteering gospel.

“I have always been keen on volunteering - I am a life member of APEX,” Keith said.

“Bankfoot House has nearly 90 members, and not all are volunteers – but we all love this place.”

Ron said he had learned a lot from other volunteers, who are experts in restoration, that he can use at home.

“You pick up more skills, particularly working in conservation,” he said.

“I’ve met experts in restoring metal, paper; people teach you. And these skills are portable – I can preserve things at home now, like old photos.”

He said Bankfoot always kept an eye out for new volunteers, as the existing ones aged.

“We decided we are not going to live forever so we have to look out for new volunteers,” he quipped.

“We need people interested in being tour guides, conservation, and gardening.”

Sunshine Coast Council Community Programs portfolio councillor Jenny McKay said this year’s theme was ‘Give Happy, Live Happy’, and acknowledged the many volunteers who gave back to the community in so many ways.

“Volunteers make an enormous difference to our community, and the nation,” Cr McKay said.

“Becoming a volunteer offers a tremendous opportunity to return something to the community and perhaps learning something completely new and rewarding in your life.

“For so many people, giving is its own reward, and there are no age limits, with people young and old volunteering across many areas.”

By Sonia Clark Can you help us find out more about this Glasshouse United Guild Recipe book? This lovely vintage 48 page booklet is packed with old fashioned recipes and has an index that includes sections for biscuits, cakes, deserts – tart fillings, pickles, savoury dishes and sweets and candies.

We think it may be quite old as the recipes use ingredients that include imperial measurements.

There are some lovely recipes such as ‘sand cake’, ‘wonder pudding’ and ‘golden staircase pie’. An unusual recipe for ‘veal and pineapple casserole’ suggests that the author or authors made the most of our plentiful local produce.

The first page of the booklet displays the index with a little recipe for a happy home underneath which contains ‘ingredients’ of good temper, forbearance, patience, contentment, unselfishness, fun and cheerfulness! It states ‘mix well with 2 quarts of human kindness’ and the dose is for ‘1 tablespoon first thing in the morning. Repeat as soon as the effects wear off!’

We’ll leave you with a couple of household hints contained in the book that hark back to a different era. ‘Keep a small box of paper clips in your sewing basket. They’re easier and quicker to use than pins when turning up hems. They are

All breeds dog show extravaganza Once again we are running three All Breeds Dog Shows at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17. The first is a Championship Show where dogs earn points towards becoming champions, grand champions and for a few particularly good dogs, to become supreme champions.

This show starts off on the Saturday at 5.00pm, then on Sunday, there is another Championship Show starting at 9.00am and also an Open Show (judged by trainee judges) running concurrently but underway at 8.30am.

It’s a great place to come and visit if you like dogs. The variety of breeds being exhibited is wide and varied. Besides the breeds we all know well, there are quite a number of rarer breeds being shown.

Also on the grounds there will be stalls selling a variety of ‘doggy paraphernalia’, a coffee van and a canteen with great food.

Range Cancer Support Group Information lunch event With the Cancer Council Australia estimating approximately 128,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed in Australia this year alone, providing support and information for people living with cancer, their families and carers is understandably a key community concern. At a local level, the Range Cancer Support Group exists to support all those who are impacted by cancer. An open invitation is going out to the community to join the group in a lunchtime information session to be held at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, in June. The event has been set up to inform people about Cancer Council Queensland’s resources and support services. With guest speaker Clare Howard, the Cancer Support Coordinator from the Cancer Council, the information session will provide a brief exploration of social and emotional issues related to a cancer experience, including the many and varied challenges and the ways of coping we all use during times of stress. The information provided will assist sufferers, survivors and carers. Everyone is welcome to attend and to come along and enjoy a shared lunch. Glass House community group funding Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell has welcomed another funding boost for local community groups through the latest round of Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants.

Mr Powell said eligible local community groups had received a share in over $216,000 to help them with the purchase of necessary equipment and upgrades to their club facilities.

“These grants allow the profits from gambling to be invested back into grass roots services and facilities that will help benefit our community,” Mr Powell said.

The next funding round has now opened and applications need to be in by midnight on May 31. “I encourage all local groups, however big or small, to apply for the next round of funding and make the most of this wonderful opportunity,” he said. Developing a tourism vision

Mooloolah Recreation Grounds - International Tree Plant We recently hosted 29 Japanese students and their teacher from Sakuragaoka School who were part of the Caloundra Christian College international student exchange program.

First they listened to a talk about the environment on the Sunshine Coast, and then learned about our beautiful Richmond Birdwing Butterfly and we planted five vines on the property.

The students were very interested and worked well. They had some planting practise in the Phillipines planting mangroves prior to coming to Australia.

We were lucky to be awarded a $5,000.00 grant recently from ‘Caring for our Community’ for planting equipment and a trailer. We would like to thank the Queensland Government for the support for our organisation and the environment.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Great weather for frogs

The recent rains are a welcome relief for our local frog species. More than 50 species of frog occur on the Sunshine Coast, while Queensland has 122 species. Frogs have often been called bio-indicators, as they are one of the first animals to react to environmental changes.

Populations of frogs worldwide have been declining dangerously for the past 30 years. Specific reasons for this are yet unknown, but include a chytrid fungus that kills frogs, changes to their habitats, the use of insecticides and herbicides, and the introduction of mosquito fish, trout and other fish that prey on frog eggs.

Locally, we have both tree frogs and ground dwelling frogs.

The Green Tree Frog, with its weird deep ‘crawk…crawk’ call, is one of the most common. Ground dwelling frogs live in a range of habitats, including rainforests, dry woodlands, swamplands, and grasslands. Common species include the Striped Marshfrog and the Stony-creek Frog (pictured). Fleay’s Barred and Giant Barred Frogs are both endangered locally, while the Tusked Frog and Wallum Sedge Frog are vulnerable.

To encourage frogs to your garden, install a pond in a shady spot, with at least a metre depth at one end, and shallower at the other (for tadpoles when they first develop their legs). Rocks, sticks and aquatic plants like the native nardoo provide habitat within the pool. Raised rocky surrounds prevent cane toads from encroaching as they cannot hop like frogs. Plants around the pond also provide hiding spots for frogs.

What are genuine savings?

Applying for your first home loan doesn’t need to be a complicated venture, but there are a couple of things to get your head around.

For one, you’ll need to put down a deposit before you can secure the loan and lenders will typically want this to come from genuine savings.

But what does this mean? And what kind of things do they assess? Here is a quick guide to help demystify the terms.

What are genuine savings?

need you to prove that you’ve got around 5 per cent of the purchase price of the property saved - this is known as genuine savings.

Basically, it is money that you’ve accumulated over time. It can even gives you a great starting point to establish good saving habits, as well as preparing you for mortgage payments further down the line.

Why do I need them?

Home loan providers usually ask for genuine savings when you’re applying for a mortgage with a high LVR, or loan-to-value ratio. For

What do lenders accept?

Australia’s broadband network for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland nbn™ Fixed Wireless on the Sunshine Coast Last year, nbn™ met with residents to discuss the rollout of a high-speed, fixed wireless broadband service in the Maleny Hinterland and surrounding rural villages.

Since then nbn™ has been undertaking site investigations of potential locations for network facilities to provide fixed wireless services to the Hinterland.

This follows the successful rollout of 20 fixed wireless facilities across the Sunshine Coast over the last two years, to communities including: Eumundi, Browns Creek, Hunchy, Kenilworth, Gheerulla, Kidaman Creek, Mapleton, Bli Bli, Cooloolabin, Tinbeerwah, Kin Kin, Doonan, North Arm, Black Mountain, Pinbarren and Boreen Point and the outskirts of Pomona and Nambour.

While nbn™ continues to deliver fixed wireless to small towns and rural villages, other areas in the Sunshine Coast will receive either fixed line or satellite services depending on where they are located.

Schools remember Beerwah students remember Contributed by Debbie Ives The mango trees at Beerwah State School stand as a reminder for all those that lost their lives fighting for Australia and New Zealand. On Friday, April 24, Beerwah State School staff and students assembled under the 94 year old mango trees to pay their respects for ANZAC Day. Year 6 School Captains Brooke Ferguson and Dylan Thiele placed a wreath on the Stone of Remembrance, as the school choir and band performed the Australian and New Zealand national anthems.

All students were encouraged to remember the sacrifice of the brave soldiers and then to reflect

on how fortunate we are today to have our freedom.

The school principal Janet Austen was joined by special guests Robert Carpenter, Mr John Rouhan and Jim Eastern from the Beerwah and Peachester RSL sub-branch.

The Beerwah State School Concert Band and Senior Choir attended the Beerwah RSL on ANZAC Day to lead the service by again performing the Australian and New Zealand national anthems, while all students were encouraged to attend and participate in the local march.

100 years on Kylie Merola One hundred years after Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed at Gallipoli, Landsborough State School has paused to remember our ANZACS - the ordinary people who found the courage to do the extraordinary.

Principal, Kristy Walton, handed the task of conducting the school's momentous centenary ANZAC service over to her student leaders.

Given adequate responsibility and encouragement, the children rose to the task.

They lead an emotional and very memorable ceremony reflecting on the service and sacrifice of our Diggers. Special guests included Flight Lieutenant Justin Parker from Headquarters 86 Wing, Corporal Kris Walters from 8/9 Brigade Enoggera, Mal Brough Member for Fisher, Councillor Rick Baberowski, Rick Joyce from the Landsborough Masonic Lodge, Ross Horne from Landsborough Glasshouse RSL Sub Branch and Robert Carpenter from the Beerwah Peachester RSL. Hundreds of hand-made red poppies made by students, were 'planted' on the school lawn next to the ANZAC shrine. It was a very striking, visual tribute to commemorate the ANZAC centenary.

During the service, representatives from each class laid wreaths which had been specially prepared by the students.

Moving ceremony at Beerwah High Tanya Hayden Our ANZAC Day school parade is one of the highlights of our school year and once again the students were exceptionally well behaved and respectful during the proceedings.

The parade was led by our school leaders – junior and senior, and they demonstrated a level of maturity, respect and commitment, well above their years. As this year marked the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing we were provided with the names of eight servicemen from the local area who fought in World War 1. It was moving to see students wear the name badge and represent these fallen soldiers as we heard their stories read aloud.

The ceremony was part of a week of commemorative activities including classroom lessons based around ANZAC Day, along with the Year 5 and 6 students travelling to Brisbane to join 4,000 school students from across Queensland for a special day of remembrance in Anzac Square.

Students, staff, parents and community members joined together to pay respect to past and present servicemen and women at the school ANZAC Service on Friday, April 24.

School leaders spoke of the ANZAC symbols (The Rising Sun Emblem, Rosemary and the Poppy) and explained their significance.

Students have been making paper poppies and writing letters to servicemen and women. Each letter will be sent with a poppy enclosed in the envelope.

Special guest Beckie MacKinney read out a letter received by her husband Jared when serving in Afghanistan.

Beckie told students that the servicemen and women love to receive letters from school students as it reminds them of why they do the job they do. Lance Corporal MacKinney was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.

Class representatives laid a hand-made wreath, alongside members of the community before observing a minute silence.

Contributed by Sandy Johnson Glasshouse Christian College held its ANZAC Service on Friday, April 24, and it was a very special event. This year the College was privileged to have a catafalque party which lent a special dignity to the service.

Primary and senior school captains led the service which included songs from the primary choir, a poem presentation by senior students, and a rhyme by students in Year 1 and 2. Then, Briony Spencer in Year 6 read a beautiful poem she wrote herself called, ‘A call for war.’

learned a different meaning to the word.

“It was called the Great War because of the great many people who died,” Mr Smith said. “More people died in the Great War than all other wars combined and that is more people than twice the current population of Australia,” he added.

After the traditional wreath laying, there was an added component to commemorate the special centenary of ANZAC Day. Nine students wore the badges of fallen soldiers and laid a poppy at the cenotaph as the soldier’s details were read out.

Once the official service was closed the special guests were treated to a morning tea of Anzac biscuits and cake in the new Year 1 staff room.

The School captains conducted the ceremony seamlessly creating a sober atmosphere in a beautifully tranquil setting.

RSL representatives, Peter Harrington and Len Sousarris detailed to the children the sacrifices made by men and women during times of war and Helen Page from the Peachester Historical Society brought the message truly home telling stories of local lads who had enlisted for World War 1, both paying the ultimate sacrifice and how that was felt back home.

The last post was played by Sam Robb and each class made and laid a wreath of poppies. It was a beautiful morning of reflection, thanks and remembrance.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate the Hinterland communities for the way you paid respect to our diggers on ANZAC Day. The feedback I have received on the ceremonies has been very positive.

So to the organisers who dedicated so much time planning the events, and to the public who turned out in force to remember and show our appreciation, I congratulate you for keeping the memory of our ANZACs alive.

Montville Morning Tea

On April 28 I hosted a morning tea at the Montville Village Hall and I would like to thank all of the residents who came along as well as State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell who dropped in. The topics discussed varied from car parking and local roads, to retirement incomes, Commonwealth Home and Community Care programs, tax reform, mobile phone blackspots and mental health support.

For anyone who was unable to attend the morning tea or call into a Listening Post but would still like to ask me a question I encourage you to contact my office on 5493 5556.

Small business owners – have your say

In good news for small business, the Government has released draft legislation to extend unfair contract term protections.

The protections will give businesses access to a level playing field to grow, invest and create jobs. I encourage our small business community to review the draft legislation and explanatory materials at www.treasury.gov.au. Consultation period ends May 12.

Food Labelling Laws

The Australian Government is preparing reforms to country of origin labelling laws. I am organising a local consultation session on May 19 with the Department of Industry and Science to ensure that input from our local agribusinesses, farmers, retailers, food manufacturers and peak industry bodies is considered as part of the review.

Celebrating 100 years of ANZAC

ANZAC Day 2015 marked the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings - an important part of the ANZAC Centenary. It was such an honour to join so many of our community members at services in Glass House including Maleny, Wamuran, Palmwoods, Witta, Woodford and Glass House Mountains. While the nation’s focus turned this year to the landings in Gallipoli, the centenary is more than this. ANZAC commemorations will continue through to Armistice Day which was November 11, 1918. Between 2014 to 2018 Queensland will join the nation to commemorate 100 years since the country’s involvement in the First World War. I encourage people of all ages to get involved in the ANZAC Centenary – by attending a commemorative event, visiting an exhibition or simply sharing stories with family and friends. Further funding grants to honour the Centenary will be announced over the coming months with the next one, which will have a focus on community research projects, scheduled for May 2015. I will share further information on how our community can apply for these grants in the coming weeks.

Nominate a nurse

The 2015 HESTA Australian Nursing Awards have opened for nominations and Queenslanders are being encouraged to put forward their recommendations for nurses and midwives who go above and beyond in their service to our community. There are three categories including Outstanding Graduate, Team Innovation and Nurse of the Year. I’m sure many of you could name at least one nurse that you either know in our community or has treated you at one of our hospitals. All you need to do is make a nomination

by July 31 by completing the online nomination form found at www.hestaawards.com.au.

Free Breast screen in Maleny

Free Breast Cancer Screening will be held in Maleny from May 14 to June 4 at the Maleny Hospital. The service is available to women aged 40 years and over. Women aged 50 to 74 are particularly encouraged to attend. Phone 13 20 50 for more details.

Beerwah Hotel lodges application to extend liquor license

I was recently informed the Beerwah Hotel had lodged an application to extend their liquor license to trade until 2.00am on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays each week.

The due date to register any concerns was April 21, 2015.

I was not informed as State Member of the application and I have been told that in these circumstances it is not required. Despite this, the Office of Liquor and Gaming have stated they will take comment from me.

So the application is to extend for three days to trade until 2.00am.

Certainly it is a modest claim compared to the application by Golden Beach Tavern and Pelican Waters Tavern.

I don’t want to see a commercial activity restrained and there are good grounds for granting an extension.

Yet, there are also reasons why the hours should not be extended.

I don’t know how many locals are aware of the application, nor your thoughts, so let me have your comments both for and against and I will pass them on. It is, after all, your community.

Golden Beach Tavern

We are still awaiting on any movement on the Golden Beach Tavern application as to whether they can extend their trading hours until 3.00am, seven days per week.

Pelican Waters Tavern

Originally residents had been given until the end of April to register their objections or support for the tavern to extend their trading hours from 10.00am – midnight to 10.00am – 3.00am, seven days per week. However, this was changed to May 11 and just this week the date, again, was changed to May 18.

The simple answer appears to be yes.

Ex-Minister for Veteran Affairs Dana Vale stated in 2004 that ... ‘The Regulations do not prohibit the naming of a person as 'Anzac', and I understand that after World War 1, in the spirit of the times, there were instances of children given the name 'Anzac'. Over the passage of time, views have changed, and I would encourage the family to consider the concerns of the ex-service community on the use of 'Anzac' as a child's name.’

Unanswered questions

Significant questions remain whether proceeding with the construction of microwave NBN towers in the district is a sensible plan, not just in terms of the well-being of the community, but also the outlay of tax-payer dollars. What kind of service are rural and semi-rural residents likely to receive? The signal is affected by varying terrain, large trees and the weather.

There is a curious example in the town of Woombah in northern NSW, where just a couple of years back, a property owner was encouraged to sign a contract for the establishment of a tower on his land. Neighbours were concerned as they had knowledge of ill-effects from the microwave radiation and upon seeking legal advice he learned that his family were locked in for 20 years and could not sell without NBN's permission.

They decided to sell-up and found no interest at an asking price of $700,000 and ended dropping it to around $400,000. During this stressful period the father passed away from a heart attack. The family eventually dropped the price to $250,000, still no takers, and in a legal wrangle were evicted from their land.

Medical cannabis trials

It is pleasing to see that at last there may be trials in Queensland for medicinal cannabis use for our sick.

The LNP Glass House State Electorate Council took to the last LNP state convention two resolutions on this issue supporting the existing senate inquiry into medicinal cannabis under the Chairmanship of Senator Ian MacDonald and requesting that trials be held here on the Sunshine Coast.

Both resolutions were passed by a large majority of members and became LNP policy.

Just recently a delegation of LNP Glass House members from Maleny attended the federal Senate Select Committee’s Inquiry into the Regulator of Medicinal Cannabis Bill 2014 and gave evidence supporting the need for the use regulation of medicinal cannabis. Now that Labor

I would like to address the ‘Not Rocket Science’ letter in You Said It and editor’s note in GC&M News issues April 15 and 22.

Firstly I have worked for Australian Post both in the sorting of mail and the delivery of mail. And would like to bring to the attention of the person who wrote the first letter stating it’s not rocket science a few facts that I do not think the general public are aware of.

Each ‘postie’ has an area in which he / she delivers to, they have varying numbers of what is called ‘points’ they can range from 600 to maybe 1600 points. Points are what is known as delivery points, which are each place, there is to be a delivery.

To try and remember each and every name of these points is ridiculous to fathom. Many people may live at the same address for many years or some may live there for a few months. How is the postie to know who lives where, when all they rely on is an address?

And as stated in her letter, she had put a street, but not a number. And did she think about the fact that it could have been a relief postie that wouldn’t know who was where?

Also did she take into consideration that these posties do their job in a set period of time, in all kinds of weather, including pouring rain.

To go door to door asking ‘is this your letter’ is ridiculous.

Please people have some thought when posting letters and maybe contact someone and ask the address. As was stated this person who passed was well known, if he was that well known, maybe she could have contacted someone to get the correct address.

She also stated that she walked the letter around to the address, maybe she could have taken note of the number off the post box for future reference.

All I am saying is that these men and women do a trying job, sometimes when you are presented with a letter or parcel that says ‘Nan and Pop’ (which happens regularly) you are left to guess which nan or pop it could be?

Please don't bag posties for a job they do with sometimes very limited information and in all weather.

NBN Update

The latest from NBN to residents (April 24) announcing their May 14 meeting says they intend a broadband facility in Palm Street right in our urban area.

It will be at the corner of Bean Street and Palm Street on the Maleny water tower. Quote – ‘a fixed wireless facility at the Maleny Works Depot, to service the rural outskirts of Maleny township.’

While placing towers (or attached facilities) for microwave broadband in rural areas with widely spaced homes is one thing - placing a tower facility broadcasting at 2.3Ghz (microwave oven frequency) in town is another issue.

Research around the world shows people living near mobile phone towers experience fatigue, headache, sleep disruption, irritability, depression, memory loss, dizziness, nausea and increased risk of cancer (Levitt & Lai, 2010, Kundi & Hutter, 2009). More research shows those living within 350 metres of a mobile phone antenna for over a decade experience a four-fold increase in cancer rates. Among women, the increase is 10 fold (Wolf & Wolf, 2007).

There are about 50 homes within 350 metres of the works depot, plus 25 villas in the retirement complex, plus a hospital. What was NBN thinking? There is an unofficial rule of thumb that no tower is within 500 mtrs of a school, hospital or retirement village. Some mobile phone and NBN tower sites have been moved because of that.

And then comes the issue of property values.

A US Real Estate Survey (July 2014) found 94% of respondents reported that towers and antennas in a neighborhood or on a building would impact the price they would pay. And 79% said under no circumstances would they ever purchase or rent a property within a few blocks of a phone tower.

On Thursday, May 14 concerned Maleny district residents need to ask NBN reps to move this site.

Warning for parents

I wish to let parents know that sadly in our lovely country town there are two teenage boys who use our skate parks who feel it is ok to swear at, threaten harm or threaten to steal the scooters of the younger children.

I witnessed their unacceptable behaviour first hand and I too was abused by these ‘thugs’ and had stones sprayed at me and my car by a push bike.

It would appear that these boys have no respect for others. My advice is to make sure your children have phones with the local Police phone number saved in them, and to remind them that if the pool next door is open they may be able to seek help there, in the event they need assistance.

Comfort of memories

On the night Monday, April 20, myself and my daughter were in a car accident on Steve Irwin Way, from which we miraculously escaped with our lives.

I wish to thank the caring citizens from within our community who attended the scene to offer assistance and our wonderful friends and family who have supported us in the days since.

On the other hand, we find it hard to stomach the fact that there is another type of person living among us.

The type of person who would steal a mobile phone from the site of a serious accident and proceed to access the internet over the next 24 hours until we realised it was missing and had it locked.

My question to that individual is ‘do you regularly take advantage of the misfortune of others’?

The phone is an object that can be easily replaced, but the photos of friends, family, high school graduation etc. are our memories.

If you do not act, they will be lost forever. The comfort of the memories it contains would greatly

help in our healing process.

Also, are you so lacking in conscience that you did not even consider that the object you took for your own benefit may have been needed to contact next of kin in a worst case scenario?

I challenge you to show that you do in fact have some morals. If you still have the phone, have the guts to hand it in at a police station, so that it can be returned to those who need it most.

Living - Music Music Today

Arts activities in the community I write an article at least once a week promoting the work of musicians who take part in the Glasshouse Muso's open mic sessions. It is emailed to those interested and also appears on the Glasshouse Muso's Facebook page. I use that space to stimulate interest in community music-making activities and to promote music and musicians that I think are worth listening to.

Writing doesn’t come naturally to me but if I can stimulate one person each week to make music or even just to make it with that little more passion, then I have achieved my aim. It seems the most efficient way to promote something I love to others and music is also something which I believe can do much to heal so many of our troubles. When it opened its arms to embrace me some 40 odd years ago, little was known or at least discussed of its power to heal or its importance within our culture as therapy for so many of society’s ills.

Governments, with their emphasis on the ‘bottom line’, still pay only lip service to the value and essentialness of the arts to all of us. That is our loss. Imagine if your community had professional level musicians who were teaching and sharing their music at the group level in local community halls and / or schools, without cost to the community? Imagine if rehearsal rooms and mentors were provided and instruments were available, performances were organised and professional level musicians were performing with little or no cost to the community.

It would be a long term vision on the part of governments - the rewards would hardly be measurable within a three year time frame, but my understanding is that countries that implement these sort of strategies see measurable savings to the health costs of their nation! Our government already has a process in place for utilising volunteers in the community and with a little imagination these sorts of schemes might be extended to enable talented artists, arts entrepreneurs and administrators to create arts and culture programs for their communities. Picture local community halls with a range of dance, art, theatre, creative writing and music sessions throughout the week, from 9.30am – 11.30am and 12.30pm – 2.30pm and then the school infrastructure might be available from 4.00pm – 6.00pm and 7.00pm – 9.00pm. Totally mad? Maybe, but it is the stuff that dreams are made of!

Subway Subway at Aussie World opened in August last year and is really conveniently placed to make the most of families visiting Aussie World, tradies on the way to and from work, people travelling up and down the highway, and it’s also a great easy to access location for locals.

It’s situated in the Aussie World retail strip, with heaps of available parking and opening hours suit those wanting breakfast, lunch or dinner.

I dropped in for this months’ Dine In Take Out for breakfast on my way to work. With the comfy seating, and the smell of freshly baked bread, it is definitely a nice place to eat in or to pick up a take away.

The service is really friendly and quick and all the ingredients are freshly enticing. When I was there

a good cross section of customers came through the store in a steady stream.

One of the current special menu items that seemed popular was the ‘Mexican Chicken Sub’.

With a filling of chicken strips, your choice of salad options on a flatbread with a tasty Mexican sauce (beans, sweet corn and herbs and spices), it is promoted as a fiesta taste sensation.

It obviously delivers, as it seemed pretty popular.

The foot long sub is meal in itself for $10.25, while the six inch sub is $7.20; it will only be available for a limited time so get in quick.

They also have a great value promotion with the $5.00 combo deal which includes a regular six inch sub with your choice of regular soft drink.

Autumn colours

Have you noticed how quickly the leaves of some trees are turning various shades of reds, yellows and oranges?

It doesn’t take much to trigger this response … a couple of cooler nights and they seem to all of a sudden change colour.

So, why do some trees change their leaf colour as we head into Autumn?

All plants shed their leaves, but many drop leaves continuously over the year – these are called evergreens – and continuously replace them.

Some lose their leaves leading into winter or into dry periods of the year.

These are broadly called ‘deciduous’ – with the process of losing their leaves called abscission (abscission is also when a fruit tree drops its fruit, for example, as a response to dry conditions).

Most deciduous trees you see are introduced ones – such as poplars, oaks, maples and liquidamber.

Australia has very few deciduous trees and shrubs – but one local is the semi-deciduous rainforest plant called the Peanut Tree (Sterculia quadrifida).

For deciduous plants, their lifecycle is split between a growing stage and a dormant stage.

In the growing stage, a plant will produce leaves which contain chlorophyll – the stuff that makes leaves green. Chlorophyll is the power-house of the plant world … it uses complex chemical processes (called photosynthesis) to turn the energy of sunlight into energy the plant can use in the form of sugars.

The chlorophyll in the leaves only lasts for so long and is broken down through the process of photosynthesis. As a result, the plant has to keep producing a constant supply to keep its leaves green and working efficiently.

As the year heads into Autumn and the temperatures drop, deciduous plants slow down their rate of chlorophyll production. For some trees, this means that other chemicals – carotenoids – present in the leaves become more apparent, colouring the leaves yellow.

Ginkgo is a good example of a yellow deciduous tree.

Other trees that turn reds and purples have another process in play.

When the chlorophyll in their leaves is reduced by about half, they start producing another chemical pigment called anthocyanin. It is the same one that colours strawberries.

As the chlorophyll reduces further, the reds and purples become stronger until they are all that remains. Japanese maples are a perfect example of these.

Leaves that exhibit a mixture of yellow, red, orange and purple Autumn colouring shows that both processes are at play. After a while, the beautifully coloured leaves fall off and become wonderful compost fodder.

But why do trees go through all of this? No one really knows. Botanists have some theories such as that the leaves become less attractive to herbivores and pests, or that the colours act as a ‘sunscreen’ to protect leaves as they become stressed from the cold.

But they remain purely hypotheses.

In the meantime, for whatever reason the trees have, we can just simply enjoy the display they put on each year around this time.

And put up with the raking that comes with it.

Sunshine Coast Council are highlighting the scourge of environmental weeds again throughout May, by holding their regular ‘weed for tree swap’ events.

Bring a bag of weeds to receive free native plants (up to three per person).

There is a long list of locations across the coast where council are holding their weed for tree swaps (you can find them listed in their website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au) but locally they are being held at: • Montville - May 12, 8.00am to 9.30am in Russell Family Park, Maleny- Montville Road (near the play equipment) • Beerwah - May 19, 8.30am to 9.30am in Emma Park (at the back of Caralan Way) For more information on local environmental weeds and what you can do to stop them, go to the council’s website and search on ‘weeds’.

We have been checking our butterfly vines for many years and are delighted to find these larva which we think are from the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly.

We are really thrilled to know we have them in our garden as our only other previous evidence had been a dead female butterfly.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus uses the image about himself and says that he is not just a shepherd but he is the ‘good’ shepherd.

The same metaphor is used several times in the Jewish Scriptures and we are all familiar with Psalm 23, ‘The Lord is my Shepherd.’ The trouble with hearing something so familiar is that it can lose some of its punch. We can get a little ho hum when Jesus reminds us that he knows the sheep and wherever the flock wander or stray he will remain with them.

In our relationships with others we often wear masks to hide our true selves. We do it for all sorts of reasons including self survival or it is just the appropriate thing to do at the time. The trouble is that the mask can sometimes become

Well it is the Good Shepherd who knows us and who recognises that true self. It is a waste of time trying to wear a mask when we are in the quiet gentle company of the Shepherd. It is also that true self that the Shepherd wants to embrace with his love, to speak a word of forgiveness, to guide along a new path and lead to a fuller and more satisfying life.

The Lord knows our temperament and like any grazier, He knows just what to do to bring out the best in all of us. At any stage of life, and wherever we may find ourselves, the reassuring voice and presence of the Shepherd is there to enliven and strengthen us.

Sport Beerwah’s boxing champion Last week, the Australian Boxing Championships were held at the Gold Coast, where three athletes from two local clubs – Handful Boxing and Hinterland Boxing Club – competed for Queensland. Stephen Pitt from Hinterland Boxing Club was also a Queensland coach.

All three boxers reached the finals, with Dana Coolwell rising to the challenge and taking out the gold medal in the Male Junior 46kg division.

His coach and mentor, Stephen Pitt, said that in becoming the Australian Champion, Dana has secured his place to compete in the Junior World Boxing Championships in Russia in October.

“Dana showed his class in the final, beating a New South Wales fighter with a lot more experience,” he said.

“But Dana’s skilfulness made the New South Wales lad look like a novice, winning in a two-one decision.

“It’s a massive step in Dana’s boxing career, and he’s 100% focused on going for gold at the World Championships.”

Stephen’s other boxer at the titles – Taylen Pitt – stepped up into the Male Youth 75kg division, making a courageous effort to reach the quarter finals, where he went down in a close bout with a

Jake who is trained by former World Champion Brett W. Smith of Handful Boxing, reached the finals of the Male Junior 52kg division taking out Dana (centre) with Queensland the silver medal. He was only narrowly beaten by coaches Stephen Pitt and Mark a fighter from the Northern Territory – who won Wilson silver at last year’s championships.

Watch and learn Three plumbers and three electricians are about to board a train to a Teamsters convention. The electricians notice that the plumbers bought only one ticket between them. The electricians ask the plumbers how they plan on getting to the convention. "Watch and learn," one of the plumbers tells them. As soon as the train leaves the station, the three plumbers rush from their seats and all squeeze into one restroom. When the conductor comes through the car he knocks on the restroom door and says "ticket please!"

The door opens a crack and the one ticket is

handed to the conductor. The electricians are impressed, and decide that's what they will do on the trip back. Then on the return trip, the electricians notice that the plumbers haven't bought any tickets. "How do you plan on getting home without any tickets?" they ask. "Watch and learn," one of the plumbers tells them. As soon as the train leaves the station, the three electricians hurry for the restroom.
