nyone who is a regular reader of GC&M News will already know about the Beerwah Charity Sports Day annual Super Strawberry competition. However I thought I'd mention it, just in case some of our newer readers from the Range, may not be aware of the longevity of the competition. This week has also seen the winner of the first round announced. Over the years there has been some very large specimens entered – I can remember one year where there was a strawberry that basically filled the whole 250gram punnet! Sadly we haven’t seen one of those for a while – so the organisers have diversified this year to incorporate weirdly shaped strawberries – we will be placing the photo of each week’s competition winner in our sports section. I know that some of you may question the legitimacy of strawberry growing as a sport, however in the lead up to the Olympics, there is always lots of discussion about what is a ‘sport’. So, I am making the call that until the Charity Sports Day on August 20 strawberry growing can be considered a sport in Glasshouse Country! Regards,

Although, at the time of going to print (Monday, July 4), the question of who will form government is still in the balance, locally the result has been more emphatic. The official Australian Electoral Commission results show that the Liberal-National Party’s Andrew Wallace will accede the retiring Mal Brough as the Member for Fisher. In the two candidate preferred count, Mr Wallace received 59.32% of the vote, whilst the Australian Labor Party’s Bill Gissane received 40.68%. The overall first preference count for all the candidates was, in order of highest to lowest: Andrew Wallace (33,452); Bill Gissane (17,188); Tony Gibson, Greens (8,216); John Spellman, Australian Liberty Alliance (2,507); Caroline Ashlin, Family First (2,307); Mike Jessop, Independent (2,191); Tracey BellHenselin, Rise Up Australia (1,862); Jason Burgess, Veterans Party (662); and LB Joum, Online Direct Democracy (326). Of the eligible local electoral roll, 74.59% turned up to vote with 6.61% (or 4,863) voting informally. Both major parties received an increase in their primary votes of around 4% due to no candidate running for the Palmer United Party, who received over 17% of the vote in the 2013 election. Locals may have noticed that the shed on the block – which is adjacent the Glenview BP and opposite the Holcim sand mine – has been transformed by an enormous painted mural. Confirming this is an announcement from recently formed Sunshine Coast company Sanad Capital Pty Ltd that they have partnered with a leading Dubai-based investment group to bring the $400 million wave pool, water park and tourist hub to Glenview. Women’s rugby league coach wanted Following the success of the Beerwah Bulldogs women’s rugby league team over the past five seasons, the Club is seeking another women’s coach for 2017. Bulldogs women’s coach, Rod Kerr, said that the high level of interest in women’s rugby league on the coast has encouraged the Club to form a second women’s team. “The Sunshine Coast has one of the highest junior girls’ rugby league participation rates in Australia with very strong junior contingents at Beachmere, Beerwah, Caboolture, Kawana, Nambour and Noosa. The second Bulldog’s team will provide a clear pathway for junior girls to enter senior football,” he said. Current women’s players come from across the Coast including Bli Bli, Maroochydore, Kawana, Caloundra, Beerwah and the Hinterland, Beachmere, Caboolture, Burpengary, Deception Bay and the northern suburbs of Brisbane. Former Caboolture junior Annette Brander is a current Australian Jillaroo and Bribie Island junior Courtney Lockwood has again been selected for Queensland. Beachmere resident Stef Gallagher will join Annette and Courtney to play her first game for Queensland against New South Wales on July 23.

Beerwah players in action against Souths Brisbane June 2016 Senior player, team vice captain and Beerwah Club vice-president Amy Bock, is excited about the prospect of another team at the Club. “Playing women’s football with Beerwah at the moment can be a bit daunting as the ladies come up against a host of State and international players in teams like Souths and Burleigh. The second side would play in the lower level competition, allowing young players or players new to the game, to gain experience before coming up against the top teams,” she said. The Club is seeking an experienced coach or captain coach for a second Beerwah women’s team to play in the South East Queensland women’s rugby league competition in 2017. Beerwah Aldi expansion plans The Beerwah Aldi store has been received well by the locals since opening in 2011, and it seems they’re about to get even bigger to allow them to expand their product range. A material change of use development application has been submitted to the Sunshine Coast Council for an extension of the Simpson Street store. According to the planning documents, an extra 221 square metres of floor space will be created by pushing the store out on the northern side. Some car parks will be lost under the increased building footprint; however more carparks are being created by an additional proposal to close the Turner Street entry and using the space for extra parking. Consequently, the site will gain an additional six car parking spaces in total. The Simpson street entry then becomes the main vehicle thoroughfare, with the driveway connecting the parking areas behind the medical centre remaining for overflow traffic movements. As the development is classified as code assessable (rather than impact assessable) no public notification is required. Riding regardless of disability By Sonia Clark
Every year the volunteer based ‘Riding for the Disabled Association Queensland’ (RDAQ), hosts their State Championships at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre located at Caboolture. The two-day event is a chance for members from affiliated clubs throughout Queensland to come together and have the opportunity to showcase their skills regardless of their disability. Recently GC&M News was contacted by Johnny Moran, OAM JPQ of Beerburrum, who is the Queensland Patron of the association. He is understandably honoured by the valuable contribution towards enriching people’s lives that the organisation achieves. “I am very proud to be connected with this wonderful association. If you can, call in over the event weekend, shake hands and be prepared to have you hearts melted by these wonderful kids who try so hard in their pursuit of excellence,” he said. The annual event involves riders, coaches and volunteers from RDAQ centres all over Queensland participating in a number of equestrian events including Dressage and mounted games competitions. Currently RDAQ run 17 centres throughout the State catering for around 500 participants with varying degrees of physical and intellectual disabilities. This year’s competition will see riders coming from a number of centres including Atherton in Far North Queensland, Rockhampton and South of Brisbane. Horses for the event are sourced from RDAQ coaches, local pony clubs and volunteer members.
RADQ has been running for over 40 years and through its therapeutic riding programs seeks to address the unique emotional, physical and social needs of its participants, by allowing riders to create abilities and inclusion. President of RDAQ, Trish Hollice says their annual event is very exciting, and although it takes a lot of work they just love seeing everyone come together. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet people face to face and swap stories and celebrate the personal achievements of the riders,” she said. The State championships have riders of all ages and abilities competing. Every participant receives a ribbon and the general public are most welcome to come along and support the event. Contributed by Neil Glover There was much excitement at the Shed with the arrival of our brand new Mig Welding Machines, funded by a grant from Sunshine Coast Council. We are fortunate to have Welding Coordinator James Stevenson, who has been the driving force behind the forming of the Welding Group. James is ably assisted by Bob Kissell; between them they have a wealth of experience in every aspect of the art of welding, which they are keen to share. An enthusiastic group of members with varying degrees of expertise, recently attended the first class, all keen to learn new skills. President Bob McLean welcomed the establishment of the new group. He marked it as another step forward in broadening the activities available free to all Shed members. Currently the other activities on offer include wood turning - general carpentry and cabinet making - art for beginners - small engine maintenance leatherwork and whip making.

‘Christmas in July’ Wine & Cheese Night

SCARS opening extra hours
Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge is hoping to increase the number of cats and dogs finding homes by staying opening extra hours. Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Manager, Penny Brischke said they understand that it is hard for families to come and see and potentially adopt their cats and dogs during the week as they usually close at 4.00pm. “First we started by increasing our Sunday trading hours, which has been an enormous success with 11 and six adoptions in the last two Sunday’s of June. So from Tuesday, July 5 our hours are changing to 10.00am – 5.00pm Tuesday to Sunday (we are still closed on Mondays). “We have seen a lot of cat adoptions over the last few weeks which is great too as we have been struggling to keep bringing in cats from the Sunshine Coast Council Pound. “Desexing cats and dogs remains topical for us, as unwanted litters continue to come in even though the kitten ‘season’ should have finished. “We would encourage people to do the responsible thing and get your cats desexed. SCARS offers discounted desexing vouchers to be used at the local Sunshine Coast vets. “Our ‘Desex in the City’ program means you can get your cat desexed for only $69.00 and we will pay the difference to the vets directly,” Penny said. SCARS, an independent, not-for-profit charity cares for up to 70 dogs and 70 cats at any one time and saves 1000 cats and dogs every year. SCARS relies heavily on government grants and the community to keep operating. The charity spends over $250,000 on vet care each year. Spending around $500 to rehome each animal – and that’s just the healthy ones. They rely on community donations to care for these cats and dogs who may have been abandoned, surrendered or found wandering the streets. All animals receive an initial vet check and care including heartworm, worming and flea prevention, vaccinations, food, shelter and care, de-sexing and micro-chipping. Adoption prices include all of this and registration with the local council. SCARS (Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Society) was established in 1979 and has a non-euthanasia policy, focusing on finding forever homes for our four-legged friends and promoting responsible pet ownership. About 120 volunteers help run the refuge which receives no recurrent government funding. Your leaving marks an end of an era here at Beerwah & District Sub Branch RSL. We will all come to appreciate you even more when we try to fill the void your Auxiliary will leave. Blues Connection comes to town

Debutante Balls were very popular in Glass House Mountains, and many have been held in the School of Arts over the years. They were usually held under the auspices of the Church, with music provided by local musicians. Many residents of Glass House Mountains will remember Mrs Beitz’s ensemble of piano, saxophone and drums. The Pride of Erin was the first dance performed by the debutantes and their partners, and supper was served after the presentation – prepared by the ladies of the Hall committee, the CWA, the Church or the RSL. In the Courier Mail on September 9, 1953 it was noted….. ‘At Glasshouse Mountains the eleven debutantes presented to Archdeacon Birch at the Church of England Ball were Glenice Meyer, Jill Sargeant, Isabel Preston, Phillipa Halstead, Joyce Jeffries, Edith Winterhoff, Lotti Winterhoff, Margaret Laboo, Joane Melville, Peggy Haupt (Huth) and Daphne Preston’. The dignitaries were Vicar Paxton-Hall, Mary Gardner, Bob Gardner, Archdeacon Birch, Irene Lawson and Toby Huth. Flower girls were Doris Page and Dale Reeves. The photo shows the debutantes and their partners, with the dignitaries on the stage behind them and the flower girls seated in the front. The Blues Connection happens on the last Saturday of each month at the Woodford Bowls Club. Run by John Lynn who also organises the venue’s long running weekly ‘Jammit’ open mic nights, Blues Connection started at the D’Aguilar Pub in 2015 before moving over to the current venue in January this year. The monthly event features a core band of semi-retired professional musicians and provides a blues orientated platform for other performers to book in and play on the evening, which runs from 6.30pm until 9.00pm. The name Blues Connection is a reference to the number of bands that have connected through the music nights however the ‘core band’ that plays at every event consists of John Lynn on keyboards, guitarist John O’Dwyer, Geoff Hillier on drums and Stephen Ewart on bass. The band is influenced by acts such as Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Gary Moore and they often play a few well-known blues standards to get toes tapping. Recently the musicians have been joined by vocalist Narelle Munday. Other performers are welcome to book in to play on the night - the only strict rule is that they only play Blues. Entry is $5.00 and if you feel like getting up to play a few songs John recommends that you head along to one of the nights and then find him to book in. Living on the Hedge Hedges are a useful and attractive way of defining boundaries, providing privacy, scenic amenity and great for wildlife. What we tend to think of as a traditional hedge is a one species planting of the same tough, readily pruned, bushy to the ground species, that is basically a living fence and not much more than that. However this is a relatively recent invention of our production line landscaping and the hedges of old contained a diverse range of species and resources for both humans and wildlife. Some of the great local plants for creating hedges include most of our Lillypilly’s and Myrtles such as Creek Lillypilly - Acmena smithii, Blue Lillypilly - Syzygium oleosum, Silky Myrtle - Decaspermum humile, Dotted Myrtle - Gossia punctata, Plum Myrtle - Pilidiostigma glabrum and Scrub Cherry - Syzygium australe (dwarf forms), however there are so many more! Common Aspen - Acronychia oblongifolia, Muttonwood - Myrsine variabilis, White Alder - Callicoma serratifolia, Blueberry Ash - Elaeocarpus reticulatus, Velvet Leaf - Callicarpa pedunculata, and Sweet Pittosporum Pittosporum undulatum and that’s just for starters. If you want prickles too to keep things in or out, you can’t go past Orange Boxthorn - Pittosporum minutiflorum, but also try Native Holly - Alchornea ilicifolia, Native Capers - Capparis spp. and Native Currant - Carissa ovata. Hedge plants are great for you and the environment, so don’t beat around the bush and get hedging.
Environment Sunshine Coast Airport joins world’s best at managing carbon emissions
Sunshine Coast Airport has joined an elite number of international airports leading the way in carbon reduction, gaining accreditation under the Airport Carbon Accreditation program at Level 3 Optimisation. The Airport Carbon Accreditation program recognises airports around the globe for managing their carbon emissions and reducing carbon footprints. Regional Director, Airports Council International Asia-Pacific Mrs Patti Chau said "this is a testament of Sunshine Coast Airport’s commitment to minimising its impact on the environment. I look forward to seeing the airport achieving the ultimate goal of carbon neutrality.” Since mapping its carbon usage in 2013, Sunshine Coast Airport has continued to work on its carbon footprint reduction program through a series of low energy initiatives including investments in low energy lighting and air conditioning, the implementation of waste reduction, recycling programs, the use of water sensitive urban design, water usage reduction and water harvesting. Airport General Manager Peter Pallot said the airport had focused on engaging with stakeholders to encourage them to reduce their carbon footprints, increasing the amount of recycling at the airport, and reducing the amount of waste that is going to landfill. “Around 44% of recyclables generated at the airport in the past were lost to landfill and 50.7% of our waste going to landfill was compostable,” Mr Pallot said. “By introducing new bins with three waste streams we have made it much easier for our guests to recognise where their waste belongs. “By separating our compostable waste from recycling and rubbish we will save around 482kg of waste from going to landfill each week. That’s 25.1 tonnes per year.” In May this year, Sunshine Coast Airport became the first airport in Australia to install a Sunshine Coast manufactured OSCA (On-site composting apparatus). OSCA is an automated, aerobic composting technology designed for on-site management of organic waste, and is the first solar powered system of its type. The OSCA uses minimal energy to process food waste, compostable packaging, paper and cardboard, and green waste into safe, stable, high quality compost.

Look out your window – what birds do you see? Sadly, the answer is often Indian Mynahs or Noisy Miners. Neat gardens, open areas of lawn and few trees are ideal habitats for these aggressive birds. If you want to encourage a diversity of birdlife to your property, you will need to revise your ideas of what your backyard should look like. Small native birds need a variety of plant heights, densities, and types. Thickly planted thickets of small shrubs or trees, especially spiky species such as Hakea or Bursaria, create areas of shelter from predators and the weather. Shrubs with small flowers located within the plant are perfect as larger birds cannot access these. Unfortunately, many nurseries sell hybrid plant species bred to produce large flowers – just what Noisy Miners love. Select a range of plants with flowers, nectar, fruit and seeds, e.g. Banksias, Hakeas, and Wattles, and vines e.g. Hardenbergia. Native grasses, if allowed to grow and set seed, provide a valuable food source for small finches and wrens. An undercover of groundcovers, herbs, rotting logs, fallen twigs and rocks provide ideal habitat for insects on which many small birds feed. Let your yard become a little messy, as twigs, leaves, fallen flowers, lichen, moss and spider webs provide birds with nesting materials. So the key to attracting lots of different bird species is to relinquish the manicured garden look and embrace a bit of mayhem and mess. School News Mooloolah State School wins at Nambour Show
Recently Mooloolah State School students entered into the arts and crafts section of the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show, thanks to the encouragement of Ms Wendy Gaines a teacher at the school. There were individual entrants from different year levels and the Year 1 teacher Miss Caitlyn Draper decided to enter a school display. The individuals entered different categories and some of the students won first, second or third, while other students received highly recommended for their effort and ability. The students won stationery packs and the first place getters also won $5.00. The students were extremely delighted with their prizes. To the school’s delight, we actually won the school display category. This category is the Fay Campbell Award and the prize was $300.00. Miss Caitlyn Draper worked hard with many students from the school to enter an amazing display based on the school’s Song. They created the school and community with paper, cellophane, drawings and reward tickets from the school to create trees, valleys, rivers, etc. It was a wonderful display and the students that participated had a great time and were proud of their contributions. Well done to the school and the other award winners from the show.
Dude that is different Teaching children acceptance and the motivation to tackle seemingly impossible goals was the focus of Jason Morris’s show during his recent visit to Beerwah Kindergarten. Jason lost his hand in an industrial accident when he was just 19-years-old. Since then he has paved a successful career as a motivational speaker and travelled all over the state with his combined show ‘Dude that is Different and Didge for Kids’. Beerwah Kindy has been an annual stop-over for the past 10 years. During the show, Mr Morris helped the children develop some understanding of what it might be like to have a disability. "Jason discussed how he overcomes obstacles and demonstrated ways he has adapted to living with one hand," co-director Rebecca Mackintosh said. “Most importantly, Jason taught the children some powerful lessons including 'Don’t give up, just keep trying' and that although we may look different, we are much the same and we must be kind to everyone.” Mr Morris explained how the indigenous instruments are created by termites and invited the children to jump and move around as he retold stories using the didgeridoo. Students go under the sea Contributed by Katrina D’Clara Beerburrum State School students in Year 2 and 3 recently participated in an overnight camp at Underwater World Sea Life Aquarium Mooloolaba. This was an exciting and unique opportunity for the students to sleep under the sea in the ocean tunnel. One of the highlights was the entertaining and informative night-time seal presentation. It was also very exciting to

have the opportunity to explore some of the behind the scenes areas and everyone got a chance to help out at feeding time too! Students explored the aquarium and its' 16 amazing zones where there are thousands of marine and freshwater animals including sharks, stingrays and beautiful tropical reef fish with students able to touch some of the amazing creatures in the touch tank!

You Said It Re: Burning issue for Bells Creek residents
Sunshine Coast Council has provided the following response for residents. Council responds to abandoned vehicles (including burnt out vehicles) on local government controlled areas only. Vehicles left on private property are the responsibility of the owner of that property. In discussions with council’s Customer Response Department, the forest in question in Steven Reeve’s letter is under the control of HQ Plantations. Therefore, any vehicles left on their property are the responsibility of that company to deal with. When responding to abandoned vehicles on council land, council use the following process: 1. an officer attends the vehicle and attempts to identify a current owner using a vehicle registration or VIN 2. the officer will contact the Police to ensure that the vehicle is not of interest to the Police (e.g. for being stolen) 3. an Abandoned Vehicle Notice is placed on the vehicle, the notice is a bright orange sticker to alert passing pedestrians or vehicles that the vehicle has been deemed abandoned. This allows for the owner to see the sticker and prompt them to contact council 4. where a vehicle is not causing a hazard, it will be left in place for 14 days to allow an owner to come forward. Where a vehicle is causing a hazard, it may be towed immediately or within 48 hours depending on the level of the hazard 5. where an owner cannot be identified, or does

not come forward, council then tows the vehicle to council’s holding yard, where the vehicle is held for a minimum of one month prior to sale or disposal. During this holding period the owner has a further opportunity to come forward and pay a fee to collect the vehicle. In regards to the incident referred to in Steven Reeve’s letter, officers have allowed additional time for the vehicle to be removed by the insurance company or owner. Following this complaint and a review of the current process, council will now be arranging immediate tow of vehicles (in a burnt out condition) once clearance has been given by the police. Council’s Customer Response team will be asking officers to reassess the area, in cases where they believe the state of the vehicle may have impacted the road. Proposal for a TT in the Hinterland
How amazing is this proposal for a TT event to take place in the Hinterland! I have never met Mr Rollins but am in awe that he has had the vision and courage to not only come up with this idea but to put his money where his mouth is and follow his dream. I took the time to read Dr Traill’s editorial and although I understand people are naturally afraid of change, I fail to see that the disadvantageous noted in his editorial will in any way outweigh the advantageous an opportunity like this provides the local community. From what I understand this proposition has the potential to; showcase our area to the world creating better awareness of the Hinterland as a fantastic tourist destination, inject a massive amount of revenue into our community – suring up local businesses, creating local jobs and opportunities for our community. It will ensure that (at the very least) the 50km of road utilised for the event is upgraded and maintained to a high state of repair and upgrade communications – I may even be able to get service on my mobile at home!

A structural fault or termite infestation can be costly to fix – in fact according to the Australian Pest Control Association, the cost of merely treating a termite problem can exceed $5,000 – so protect yourself by hiring a professional to perform a pre-purchase building report. Spend some time in the building Part of the character of an old building comes from its quirks and oddities, which are usually endearing but can be testing. After obtaining a pre-purchase report, the best way to uncover such issues is to simply spend time in the
home. According to a NSW Fair Trading fact sheet, it should take between half an hour and and hour to inspect the building yourself, getting a feel for the home while searching for signs of mould, rot and cracks on walls, and to review the hot water system’s size and age. The cost of merely treating a termite problem can exceed $5,000. Leave some wiggle room in your finances When purchasing an older building it’s a great idea to leave some extra “just in case funds” in your home loan. This can help cover issues that pop up after you’ve moved in or you might have missed during your own inspection, and can even go toward any unexpected or unavoidable disasters that may occur. It’s important that you have this wiggle room so that

Budget blow for Caloundra
I am very excited to confirm around 38 hectares of remarkable space in the Glass House Mountains is set to officially become the first District Park. I cannot thank our local community enough, working together with council, we now have an endorsed landscape plan which will see Glass House District Park become a great addition to our public park network. I’m positive this scenic parkland comprising of environmental reserve, lake and open space, will become one of those ‘must do’ places for locals and visitors. It should also eventually become a hub for community events and get-togethers. Even better, it’s been allocated $1.8 million in council’s 10 year Capital Works Program to progressively make the plan a reality.
The Caloundra Electorate has received very little from the State Budget, which is disappointing when our community is growing at an exponential rate. It’s a budget that is lacking a lot of detail. $25 million out of $100 million was allocated for the North Coast Rail upgrade but this is purely for studies and public consultation. At the 2015 State Election the LNP had committed in excess of $550 million to duplicate the North Coast Rail from Beerburrum to Landsborough. Clearly Labor has no timeline or commitment to build it.
Future planning for South East Queensland The Queensland Government is seeking ideas to help develop the South East Queensland Regional Plan. I strongly encourage all residents to have a say on the future of South East Queensland. Jobs plan for Caloundra Electorate The LNP has released its plan to get Queensland working again, which will create up to 20,000 jobs across the State. This includes giving young apprentices and tradies in Caloundra that vital first leg up with $500.00 towards new tools for apprentices upon completion of their training. Queensland businesses will also receive a $5,000 incentive for those who take on a new apprentice from the beginning to the end.
Caloundra Road Traffic – The Coast’s longest car park There has been strong support for the Action on Caloundra Road Traffic Congestion petition, calling on the State Government to work with Stockland to fast-track the completion of the Bells Creek Arterial to the Bruce Highway and investigate installing traffic lights and exit slip-lanes at the Caloundra Road/Nicklin Way roundabout. Cappriccio's Italian Restaurant On the second State of Origin game night I managed to convince Brownie (sadly a NSW supporter) that we should head out to our favourite local Italian restaurant Cappriccios at Maleny before the game got underway. Fortunately for us, the restaurant had re-opened after taking a well deserved break. Owner / Chef Phil Vendetti seemed very relaxed and refreshed which was probably handy for the rush of 'Footie Fans' ordering take away pizzas for the big night. I figured we wouldn't need a booking, that we’d be able to get a table as most of the Queensland supporters probably wouldn’t want to leave their nice warm homes on the night. And yes I was right. For the first time ever we managed to get the best table in the house (in winter) the one right beside the roaring fire. And while there weren’t many of us dining in on the night, the staff were definitely kept under the
pump, with take-away orders! Having tried the garlic bread previously we went for sharing Foccacia for an entrée which was topped with sundried tomato, garlic and herbs with a sprinkling of mozzarella – really flavoursome and very filling. Brownie has a standard favourite pizza, the Margaretta, with the added treat of anchovies so his order was a no brainer. I decided that instead of having a really creamy pasta, I would go for something different – Steak Dianne. And the meat was just melt in your mouth satisfying. Owner / chef Phil told me the steak was sourced through the butcher from one of their neighbouring shops at the Riverside. As you can see by the photo the meal had a very creamy sauce, but as it was served with a very big crunchy ‘undressed’ side salad, that would have to count as improving the ‘health rating’ of the meal.
By this stage I had already decided on my dessert which was to be one of the tempting Gelatos on offer. Being winter while I was tempted with the Pineapple Sorbet, instead I had chosen the ‘After Dinner Mint’ which the menu describes as Crème de Menthe combined with a smooth chocolate gelato. Sadly this was the one disappointment of the night – I just couldn’t possibly fit it in. So my plan for next time is to start on the dessert menu, which we hear is soon to see some changes. We couldn’t nail down what it might involve. However, Phil seemed to think we would be happy with the changes and we will just have to wait to be surprised next time. So my tip would be, if you are planning to head into Cappriccios in the upcoming cooler months – make sure you phone ahead and book one of the tables closest to the fireplace.

Winter is here – and so are colds and flu! with Billie from BL Natural Health Here are my 5 top tips for head colds: 1. Gargle with salt water. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in half a cup of warm water and gargle until all the water is used up. Repeat 3 times a day. 2. Garlic is one of the best antiviral and antibacterial natural products - use it in everything you can. Make up a garlic Oxymel (recipe below) at the beginning of winter. Take 3 teaspoons per day. 3. Reduce sugar and white flour. Both increase inflammation. Sugar also competes with vitamin C for uptake into your cells. Your immune cells need vitamin C to fight those nasty bugs. 4. Avoid mucus forming foods (milk, cheese, yoghurt, chocolate, bananas). 5. Eat nourishing whole foods (chicken soup, citrus with the pith and the white part of the skin, shitake mushrooms and Manuka honey) and drink plenty of fluids, mainly water and herbal teas. Finally go to bed and rest.

Garlic Oxymel 30g garlic (approx. 10 cloves) peeled and smashed 4g (1 heaped tsp) fennel seeds (optional) 4g (1 heaped tsp) caraway seeds (optional) 6 cloves (optional) 100mL organic apple cider vinegar 40 mL (approx 2 tbs) honey – raw, organic 1. Put seeds and vinegar in a small pot and gently warm for a few minutes – do not boil! 2. Add honey until combined. 3. Poor over garlic and let steep (up to 24 hours). The longer you leave it, the stronger/hotter it will taste. 4. Strain and put in a dark glass bottle - sterilise the bottle before use. Adults: Take 1 teaspoon 3 - 6 times a day at the first sign of a cold or during colds/flu. Store the Oxymel in the cupboard for up to 12 months, preferably in a dark glass jar. The vinegar, garlic and honey are all anti-bacterial so it is unlikely to go off.

Glasshouse Musos and dreams of a wildgoose
Those heading along to the ‘Glasshouse Musos night' at the Beerwah Hotel on Tuesday, July ford Slea ina Dev Photo by 12 will have an extra special performance by Ann Leung, performing songs from her album, accompanied by Rebecca Wright on cello and Chris Hall on bass, from 8.00pm. Considered ‘mute’ at childhood, Brisbane Singer/Songwriter, Ann Leung, has overcome a lifelong aversion to singing, to find her voice some 45 years later. Malaysian born Chinese, Ann Leung landed in Brisbane when she was three. Overwhelmed and bewildered by a new country full of ‘strange looking fair skinned kids’, Leung transformed overnight from a chatterbox to a shy, reserved toddler, and for over 12 months didn’t speak to anyone outside of her family. “In Kindergarten, I particularly detested sitting around the piano, singing unfamiliar nursery rhymes, and doing silly hand gestures,” Ann recalls. “I always felt self-conscious and never understood why others seemed to enjoy it.” After learning classical guitar at school, her guitar gathered dust for over 30 years, before in 2009, she joined friends “for fun” to form the band, Diddly Squat. “Twelve months after playing regularly with the band, I accidentally wrote my first song. A few weeks later came another, and another,” she said. Leung says the joy of discovering a new creative outlet and means of self-expression, meant learning to sing became a necessary, if somewhat terrifying progression. The journey has taken her on a rollercoaster of experiences including sobbing in a singing workshop at Mt Tamborine, when she discovered she might have a voice, to performing live on national TV with Diddly Squat as part of ABC’s Exhumed TV series in 2013. Then more recently, working with award winning guitarist and musician Michael Fix to release her debut album, titled ‘Dreams of a wildgoose’. “My name in Chinese means ‘wildgoose’” explains Ann of the album title. OK, so you have recorded your album and now you want to take it on the road, but without a marketing campaign you’re not giving yourself your best shot, and this is where a lot of artists become unstuck. They have worked hard to get to this point and now they just want the music to speak for itself. A friend of mine – Ann Leung, recently produced her first album and did a brilliant job on the marketing side. I sent her this email following her album launch: ‘Ann, the CD launch was a fantastic showing for your album - the room was just the right size, the vibe great, and the songs came up wonderfully. And what a backing band, can you keep it together? I want to offer you huge congratulations on the success of this project. Your marketing of it has been a model for new songwriters/CD producers. It takes a lot of guts to put yourself out there, but it is the only way you can get your head above the crowd. Most artists who make an album today fall down on the marketing side. The product might be excellent (often is), but how will anyone know it exists or bother to buy it unless it is right there in the face, not once, but time and again. So, lots of publicity, a launch, copies to radio and reviewers, a web page and Facebook site and newsletter (every three months or so) promoting you and your work, and then lots of gigs promoting and selling the product is the way to go, and you are doing it, good on you.’ Many song writers do get the first parts right: write some good songs, team up with a studio and if needed, some performers to make a good album, produce an impressive CD cover with booklet, and produce 200 or 500 or even 1000 copies, but then stop… And I can understand why they stop. They had expected the world to recognise them immediately and when it doesn’t, their energy for the project just falls away. It is an unfortunate reality of life today that the marketing side of your venture is what will win success for it. The product itself is only a small part of the package.

Eight week challenge success Plus Fitness Beerwah manager Josie is pleased to announce the winners of their recent eight week challenge – congratulations to Matthew Carter and Jess Dale. Out & About Say yes to domestic peace Last Thursday saw the finale of the ‘Say yes to domestic peace’ mural project at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, which was launched during Domestic Violence Awareness Week on May 24. Over the time, at least 200 people completed the amazing mural, which was made up of 133 individual canvases in a range of different sizes, which were then placed on sale as a keepsake from this heartfelt event. Need a Feed charity modelling expo By Sonia Clark Coming up on Saturday, July 16, members from Need a Feed Beerwah are hosting a ‘modelling expo’ at the Beerwah Community Hall to raise funds for Need a Feed, The Cancer Council of Australia and The Rainbow Child Foundation. For just a gold coin donation entry, the event promises to provide an afternoon of glamour, style and fabulous fashion suitable for the whole family. There will be models on the catwalk, dancing presentations from Teghan’s Dance Club, yoga displays, open styling workshops all afternoon, and food courtesy of the Rotary Club of Beerwah. The afternoon will feature raffles, lucky door prizes and stall holders selling new clothing, giftware and beauty products. Open workshops will include hairdressing and makeup techniques, nail art and photography from Whisper Images. There are a number of local businesses supporting the event; some of these are local boutiques whose clothing will be modelled on the catwalk – including Icon Boutique and Gracie Mayne Boutique. Local community groups will also be holding informative discussions. Coastal Banksia
Banksia integrifolia What is more synonymous with the Australian bush then May Gibbs’ Snugglepot and Cuddlepie and the Big Bad Banksia Men? Coastal Banksia is one of the common banksias found in our area of the Sunshine Coast. They grow happily in sandy soils of the coast or up into the mountains. The Coastal Banksia is quite variable in form and often forms a small tree up to 20m tall. In open exposed sites it may only grow to a small wind swept shrub less than 5m tall. They often develop an attractive gnarled twisted trunk. The flowers start off a beautiful lime yellow and age to a striking brown as they mature. The hard seed capsule loses most of its hairy stamens and stays on the plant for years. The leaves are dark green on the upper surface and almost white underneath. Banksias provide a pollen and nectar source for small mammals, birds and bees. In some areas, Aboriginal people used to soak the nectar rich flowers and drink the sweet drink from this. They would also use the smoldering banksia cones to carry fire with them. Why don’t you plant a beautiful Banksia integrifolia or one of our other banks species in your backyard and share with your children the wonderful stories of May Gibbs?

Artesian Springs and Faith
I have always been intrigued by oddities in nature which seem to puzzle the best minds. Perhaps you have had that experience too. Today I expect to be out in western Queensland helping two of my grandchildren experience the wonders of artesian water coming freely from a pipe from a reservoir hundreds of metres below their feet. It will be hot, have a pungent odour and arrive at the surface under pressure. They will experience having their evening shower in hot water directly from one of these bores. Of course I will persuade them that it will be safe and sensible to shower with this water which smells so different to the chlorinated variety they use back home in their coastal citifies. By then they should have no difficulty accepting the experience. In the last few days they have seen for the first time fossilised dinosaur bones in Richmond and Winton. They have got their minds around the process of the past presence, death and fossilisation of these strange creatures. And as part of that experience they have seen the preserved footprints of several different sized dinosaurs at Lark Quarry outside Winton.

Creatures formed by God, yet they do not exist anymore. Sometimes we cannot explain everything to our personal satisfaction. I struggled with the existence of dinosaurs and their demise. But now, having seen solid evidence of them on many occasions and having looked at that evidence rationally in light of my faith, I have no difficulty with their existence and my belief in the authority and authenticity of the Bible. I do have some difficulties with the current understanding of the timeframe of their existence and extinction. Which leads me to the topic of faith. Faith in God, and the salvation provided through the death of Jesus of Nazareth on the cross close to two millennia ago, requires confidence in the scriptures. Through that same faith it is possible to only partially understand and yet still accept that Salvation personally. I guess one day we will have all our questions answered. Even questions about dinosaurs.

Sport Beerwah Splash Swim Club The Beerwah Splash Swimming Club folded about five years ago and over the last two -three years a number of enthusiastic parents have struggled to get the club going again. The good news is, they have been making positive progress and are keen to spread the word and encourage other families to join up. Club Secretary, Karen May said while the club is very much a family club with a focus on participation, fun and enjoying the healthy sport of swimming during the last season, some of the members did compete in a number of swim meets. Eight members recently travelled to Bundaberg to compete in the Fairymead Short Course Meet and two of the club members, Emma May and Jaymes Roser, both qualified for Queensland State Short Course. Emma will compete in the 400 Freestyle and 400 IM and Jaymes will compete in the 50m Freestyle and 50m Breaststroke in August. “We’re starting our swim season with Splash! We would love those with an interest in joining to come (from age five and up and able to swim

The Runners-up with + 24 in the second game were the Kilcoy Pair of Lee Irwin and Lester Bechley. The jackpot wasn’t won when –15 was drawn and the lucky Raffle Winners were Rob Schoyer, Joe Walters and Bill Edwards. Tuesday’s winners with two wins +5 were Relma Godfrey and Sandra Kapetanic. The jackpot of $72.00 wasn’t won. Wednesday’s Twilight Challenge: Despite the chill in the air there was an excellent roll-up with 42 players present. The winning Teams were:- Tutors, Cookies, Ezi Riders, Mavericks and Handles. The individual winners were:Lead - Scott Alexander, Second - Toni Walters and Skip - David Coffey. The Touchers went to Allan Cook, Margaret Ginns and Kay Gesch. The Money Board winners were Paul Mellick and Steve Porter. Warwick Moody had a surprisingly easy win over Ray Oldfield, Curley Petersen easily accounted for Joe Walters, and Jim King despite a very spirited comeback from 14 to one down lost to Graeme Glover 25 shots to 21. In the Men’s Pairs, Allan Cook and Warwick Moody defeated Tony Snel and Graeme Glover 24 shots to 10, Miles Allen and David Burgess beat the much more experienced Ray Oldfield and Les Bennett 26 shots to 12, Curley Petersen and Ian Hansen beat David Austin and Joe Walters 38 shots to 18 and Jim King and Don Ginns had the bye. In Singles, Ian Hansen plays Warwick Moody in one semifinal and Curly Petersen plays Graeme Glover in the other. In the men’s pairs, Allan Cook and Warwick Moody meet Miles Allen and David Burgess in one semi-final and defending champions Curly Petersen and Ian Hansen play Jim King and Don Ginns in the other. There were only two Teams nominated for the Ladies Pairs so the match was a Final in which Margaret Ginns and Lucy Oldfield defeated Heather Snel and Jane Burgess 23 shots to 17 and so are the 2016 Ladies pairs Champions. The most valuable strawberry Round 1 of the 2016 Super Strawberry Competition has created a new record: this is Greg Harvey’s entry, and we believe it must be the most valuable strawberry in the district this week! It came in as an entry in the 'most unusual' category – and if you need an
explanation, as he says, “it’s a hand!” Greg’s initiative really paid off, as the hand was the only entry in this round, and weighing in at a modest 40 grams, it was also the heaviest strawberry! So the prize for the weekly winner (a six-pack from Beerwah Hotel) goes to Greg. So start looking now, strawberry growers and pickers! It is worth bringing in any potential contender as it could be the best entry in next week’s field. The Super Strawberry Competition runs annually in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival, and the champion will be announced at the sports day on Saturday, August 20. Six rinks of bowls were played with teams from Glass House as well as Palmwoods, Woodford and Donnybrook taking part. Two games of 15 ends were played. Winners of the day were Eileen Pearce, Lloyd Walker and Judy Walker with two wins + 36 margin. Runners up were Clive Sinton, Gordon Dyer and Graham Richardson with two wins + 16 margin. The lucky team draw went to Don Tierney, Col Allen and John McSwain. Our first Jackpot didn’t go off so next month it will go up to $120.00. I encourage everyone to hang round for a beer after the game. Your team needs to be present for both the Lucky Draw and Jackpot. Next month’s game is Monday, July 25.
