Beerwah State High School welcomed 157 new year 7 students to the school last week.

Deputy principal Tanya Hayden said it had been a very positive start to the year with a key focus in the first week on building relationships between students and staff and assisting students to settle into their new school environment.

Local News Upgrade to Ewen Maddock Dam One of the coast’s key drinking water dams and well loved recreation spot for Glasshouse Country locals is set to undergo a $20 million upgrade.

Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Dr Anthony Lynham said construction work for the upgrade of Ewen Maddock Dam would begin in August this year.

The upgrade will bring the dam in line with modern engineering design standards.

“Improving the flood capacity of the dam will also ensure an even higher level of safety for downstream communities,” Dr Lynham said.

“It is expected to take up to 18 months to complete and will include raising and extending the existing embankment walls and strengthening the existing spillway to improve safety for the downstream community.”

For the safety of the public, all on-water recreation, access to the designated swimming area and multi-use trails from Maddock Park, and the recreational use of Maddock Park will be closed for the duration of the upgrade work.

Access to the multi-use trails from alternate locations will be maintained where possible.

Seqwater CEO Neil Brennan said that as part of the upgrade project Seqwater would improve the existing beach and swimming area.

“We understand that Ewen Maddock Dam is a very popular recreation destination and apologise

for any inconvenience this closure may cause to the public,” he said.

“Our aim will be to reopen recreation as soon as practical once the upgrade works are complete.’’

Dr Lynham said dams were long-life assets that required continual assessment, monitoring and maintenance.

“There have also been significant advances in dam design over the years and our knowledge and understanding of the size and impact of extreme weather events and other natural hazards has also changed,” he said.

Ewen Maddock Dam, built in 1976, is one of a number of dams across South East Queensland earmarked to be upgraded as part of Seqwater’s dam improvement program.

Recycling anger closes Beerwah facility

Frustration over the Envirobank Drop’n’Go container return facility located at the Beerwah Hotel has resulted in hotel management giving them their marching orders.

Hotel and bottle shop staff have had to endure endless complaints and even abuse from people looking for the orange mesh recycling bags, but never finding any available in the recycling unit.

Hotel owner Rick Gazzard last week had had enough, telling Envirobank to remove the recycling unit from the hotel site by close of business Friday, February 15.

In a post to the hotel’s Facebook page, Rick explained that the provision of bags was the sole responsibility of Envirobank and nothing to do with their staff.

“Envirobank’s failure to live up to their responsibilities has created problems for us – including abuse of our staff for failure to provide empty bags (which was never our responsibility) and most recently the dumping of full bags of containers in our car park because the units had not been emptied,” Rick wrote. “… all we have done is provide a site for them to operate from and unfortunately they have not been able to do that in a manner that did not cause us ongoing problems.”

It seems that Beerwah isn’t the only Envirobank site having the same hassles.

A quick read of the comments by people on the Envirobank Facebook page gives the impression that similar problems are happening across their whole network.

Users are also not happy with Envirobank changing the rules so that the bags must contain exactly 50 containers. Any other number means that you may not be credited with the container refund for that bag.

Comments on the Beerwah Hotel Facebook page are supportive of Rick’s stance, although disappointed that it leaves no collection point in the local area.

Many posted comments suggesting the containers be taken to a rival Tomra recycling centre at 5 Pike Street, Kunda Park, where people seem to be happy with the service.

Kindy honours Kathy Friends and family of the late Kathy Denning gathered at the Beerwah Kindergarten in January to remember the community-minded woman who gave so freely of herself for the benefit of others.

A memorial garden plaque was placed in the tranquil front garden to mark the role Kathy and her husband Graham “Bluey” Denning played in literally building the foundations for the kindy as we know it today.

Speaking at the memorial gathering, long-time family friend Isabel Vere said she joined Bluey and Kathy on the Beerwah Kindy committee when they were operating out of the CWA Hall in the main street of Beerwah.

“For years the committee had been saving and putting money away to build a kindy and then Bluey came along and said, ‘why don’t you just build a kindy?’ ” she recalled.

“He called in a lot of tradies and mates, who donated their time and some equipment and resources and they set to work.”

Isabel said Kathy was great at fundraising and made sure the kindy’s coffers were boosted so there was enough to see the project through.

With so much being donated in kind and the supplementary funds coming through a buya-brick campaign, spearheaded by Kathy, the kindy was built on the current site in Free Street in a matter of weeks in 1979 and accepted its first cohort in 1980.

Bluey was the president, Isabelle the secretary and Kathy the treasurer at the time.

Graham ‘Bluey’ Denning with children Sharon and Rodney remember their late wife and mother Kathy Denning, who gave so much to the Beerwah Kindergarten “There are so many good memories here,” Bluey said. “This is why we wanted to place a plaque here for Kathy.”

Their children Rodney and Melissa were among the first children to attend the new-look kindy in its first years of operation.

But it wasn’t just the kindy that benefitted from the kindness of the Dennings.

As owners of the Beerwah Post Office at the time, Bluey recalled that their after hours schedule often looked like this - Apex Monday, Kindy committee Tuesday, Girl Guides Wednesday, golf club Thursday and off to the pub on Friday.

The couple lived in Beerwah from 1979 to 1986, before moving up to Maleny.

Kathy passed away in July last year after a battle with cancer.

Daughter Sharon Denning said that seeing so many people gather in honour of her mum was heart-warming.

“They all keep in contact and are always getting back together, even though it has been decades since [her parents] lived in town,” she says.

“The community spirit lives on, not only in these relationships, but in the way the kindy continues to grow and thrive.”

Co-directors Rebecca Mackintosh and Katie Piva welcomed the 2019 groups of children last week, who were bright-eyed and ready to have fun learning through play.

Is this your year to be brave and shave?

The Leukaemia Foundation this year celebrates 21 years of the World’s Greatest Shave campaign. It started back in 1998 and is now one of Australia’s biggest and most loved fundraising events.

Once again people of all ages will shave, colour or wax the hair on their head, chest or face, supported all the way by proud family, friends, colleagues and classmates.

Some will have a personal connection to blood cancer, while others take part simply to have fun, tick a bucket list box and raise money for a good cause.

If you have been thinking about joining in, there is still time to get organised to make it happen in 2019.

This year the coordinators of the Landsborough Market decided to get behind this important fundraiser by having their very own hairdresser on hand and hosting a shave day on Saturday, March 16.

They already have one enthusiastic local, Margaret Hulm (pictured), participating on the day. Plenty of locals will recognise Margaret as she is regularly out and about pushing her chihuahua Angel around town in her pram.

Margaret did the shave a few years ago and has been growing her hair since then, so it is now quite long.

The Landsborough Market team is keen to encourage other locals to have their shave done

Fisher Community Awards on again

Public nominations are now open for the second annual Fisher Community Awards, organised by federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace.

The awards recognise organisations and individuals who have made a difference in the fields of education, employment and retirement.

“We all know those local people who are giving something back – the leaders in our schools, businesses and community groups who inspire us and who set the example for all of us to follow,” Mr Wallace said.

Council changes rules for dogs, signs and fires Agreement was reached to amend a range of provisions under local laws at the Sunshine Coast Council’s ordinary meeting last Thursday.

Those that will affect hinterland communities include amendments to the framework for verge garden plantings, changes to short-term real estate sign rules, new off-leash dog areas and changes to the definition regulating where fires can and cannot be lit.

After the ‘urban food street’ mess in Buderim, the council set up a verge planting process. The amendments proposed will formalise the selfassessment approach, which is aimed at eliminating the need for a council-assessed permit application in most cases.

Another amendment will allow residents selling their house to put up more short-term signage on the day before an open house.

Backyard fires will be prohibited in urban areas and allowable – with conditions – in rural and rural residential areas.

Of most interest will most likely be official designation of off-leash dog parks in Glass House Mountains, Landsborough and Mooloolah.

The existing fenced dog park in the Glass House Mountains District Park (off Page Street) has been approved as a 24-hour off-leash area, as has the newly opened fenced dog park in Pioneer Park at Landsborough.

An unfenced area of the Mooloolah Recreational Reserve has been designated as an off-leash dog park at all times except during an approved event at the reserve.

Honour for Glass House Mountains local

Last week GC&M News shared the wonderful news that two of our dedicated community members were recognised with the Order of Australia Medal as part of the Australia Day 2019 honours list.

The Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, on behalf of all Australians, congratulated the recipients of Australia Day honours.

“These people are worthy of our respect, admiration and thanks – they have made an enormous contribution to their local communities and to the entire nation,” the Governor-General said.

“While typically they haven’t sought thanks or recognition, they deserve both. Their generosity, selflessness, compassion, dedication, commitment to service and energy inspire and motivate all of us.”

We caught up with ex-service man Denis Hare of Glass House Mountains who was honoured for his extensive service to veterans and their families through his participation in a number of organisations including the Australia Vietnam Volunteer Resource Group and Signals Vietnam Veterans' Association.

This is not the first time Denis’ contribution has been formally acknowledged as he received the British Empire Medal back in 1980.

Denis explained that he received his BEM for services to trade training in the Royal Australian Corps of Signals.

When asked how he felt about receiving the OAM, he said it was a real honour and he felt particularly

fortunate to receive it for doing something that he Colleen and Denis Hare genuinely enjoys.

Denis was also keen to acknowledge the constant support of his wife Colleen Hare, whose involvement in many of the projects over the years has improved the quality of what he had been able to achieve.

Since retiring, Denis has been dedicated to recording the history of the Vietnam War, which has seen him write a book 'Pronto in South Vietnam 1962-1972' (digital book, 2001) as well as creating a website with more than 4000 online images.

“The website has become a bit of an obsession but one that gives me a lot of satisfaction,” he said.

Denis is a member of the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub-Branch and in past years he has taken on roles including newsletter editor, memorabilia and regalia officer and membership officer.

Sub-branch immediate past president Captain Peter Hyde RAE (retired) said the activities Denis undertook and the contribution he made were truly valued.

Denis continues his involvement in the Glass House Mountains community as a volunteer at the Visitor Information Centre, which has also seen him visit local schools, sharing his knowledge on the history of the region.

Denis is looking forward to attending the investiture ceremony, which will be held at Queensland Government House in the coming months.

With Senior Constable Susan Lowndes As January and the Christmas and New Year holiday periods draw to a close it’s a good opportunity to review the drink driving incidents for January.

From January 1 until the morning of January 31 there were 105 drivers on the Sunshine Coast charged for drink or drug driving. This figure includes 11 charged with drug driving.

Another 11 were charged with being under 0.05 per cent blood alcohol concentration (BAC), which means they were individuals who were required to be 0.00 per cent BAC. This includes both learner and P-plate drivers and drivers in charge of commercial vehicles.

There were 69 drivers charged in relation to readings between 0.05 per cent BAC and 0.15 per cent BAC, which are considered either low or midrange offences.

The remaining 14 drivers were charged with high range drink driving, which is a reading of more than 0.15 per cent BAC, three times the legal limit for a fully licensed driver.

The figure is slightly down for the same period last year which saw 21 people charged with high range drink driving.

The highest reading of 0.292 per cent BAC (almost six times the legal limit) was recorded on January 12 at Caloundra. A 38-year-old woman will front Caloundra Magistrates Court on February 5 in relation to the incident.

Community News Three years of funding Nungeena Aboriginal Corporation for Women’s Business based at Glass House Mountains is just one of the successful recipients of the Sunshine Coast Council’s 2018 Community Partnership Funding Program.

The program provides up to three years of operational funding to a diverse range of community groups across the region to allow them to dedicate their time and resources to delivering services to the community.

Community portfolio councillor Jenny McKay said more than $870,000 in funding had been allocated to 113 local not-for-profit community groups across the region this financial year.

“By covering operational costs such as insurances and general maintenance, the program ensures that the funded groups can continue to operate and invest their time and energy into providing vital services to their members and the broader community,” Cr McKay said.

“One of the recipients funded in the community facilities category is Nungeena, which manages a community meeting space and provides a wide range of activities including cultural awareness programs, arts and craft workshops, and bush tucker experiences.

“Nungeena is one of two local First Nations organisations successful in this round,” Cr McKay said.

“These groups align strongly with council’s reconciliation action plan, which supports social and economic opportunities for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community of the Sunshine Coast.”

Nungeena chairperson Garmi Nungeena (Lucille Thompson) said Nungeena was located on ancient sacred land adjacent to Mt Beerwah.

“Nungeena’s focus is to weave in a new Dreaming, bringing together all people to share the cultural and spiritual knowledge of Aboriginal people and the land,” she said.

“We run Aboriginal dot and symbol painting workshops with elder and artist Aunty Eve Kitchener every Sunday from 10am-3.30pm, which are open to the broader community.

“Plans are under way to develop a bush tucker pathway around our six hectare property, which will be used to share knowledge of how native plants were traditionally used for food, medicine, weaving and/or tools. We will also soon be launching bush tucker nights,” Garmi said.

“The restaurant is an ideal meeting space as it contains a kitchen, dining area and undercover area.

Adjacent to this is a large lawn used for yarning circles, camp fires and movie nights under the stars.

“We invite people to come out and experience this peaceful place for themselves.”

The packing shed at Liz and Terry Little’s property at Beerburrum recently made a perfect venue for a birthday celebration 100 years in the making.

Evelyn Philps relocated from Gayndah three years ago at age 97 to live with her daughter and son-in-law.

Liz explained that Evie, as she is known, puts her longevity down to “being of English stock”.

In keeping with her English heritage, the packing shed was adorned with English bunting, balloons and greenery Liz Little, Evie Philps and Alan Philps to mark the special occasion. who travelled from the UK for the There were about 74 guests on the celebration day to share in the celebration, some travelling from as far as Sydney and Cairns, with Evie’s son Alan arriving from England.

Evie attended school in London and Brisbane and took on various jobs before deciding that nursing was the career for her.

She trained at The General (now Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital) and was man-powered to Wondai District and Training Hospital during the war years as the relieving matron.

Evie’s family is proud of her achievements and clearly hopes that she has passed on her good genes to them. They are looking forward to many more birthday celebrations.

Office space available

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is keen to spread the word that two office spaces recently became available for permanent or temporary tenants.

Centre coordinator Nooreen Harris said the eastern office would be perfect as a natural therapies room and it incorporates a mini kitchen.

“Our room rates are quite reasonable and competitive, and by hiring one of the centre’s rooms you would also be supporting local community programs,” she said.

Maleny is one of few officially recognised neighbourhood centres in Queensland that are only partly funded to run programs and activities.

While 50% of the budget for operating the centre is funded by the state government and Sunshine Coast Council, the other 50% is raised through room hire, memberships and donations.

“This allows us to respond to community needs without being tied into service contracts but does put us at risk when funding changes, which is why these offices are now available,” Nooreen said.

“The centre has grown in the past few years from totally volunteer run to currently having three paid positions and more than 40 volunteers who help run the community garden, kitchen and do some administrative tasks.”

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre’s footprint covers the area from Conondale to Mapleton and Booroobin, which is a large area to service for emergency relief and other support.

“We are one of the few centres that do not have criteria for vulnerable people to access our food pantry and other items,” Nooreen said.

The Quota Club of Maleny celebrated Quota International’s centenary milestone at the recent Australia Day expo held at the Maleny Showgrounds.

The effort members put into creating their display was appreciated by the event organisers who awarded them with the prize for the best

community static display on the day.

Quota International was founded in 1919 by Wanda Frey Joiner, a Russian refugee who became a successful business woman in Buffalo, New York.

Today the organisation is active in 14 countries.

This year marks another important milestone for Maleny Quota - in November it celebrates 30 years since it was charted in 1989.

During that three decades Maleny Quota has raised up to $300,000 to support both local causes and Quota's international projects.

Maleny Quota president Jan Olde said the club’s primary focus was the hearing and speech impaired and disadvantaged women and children.

One of the club’s primary beneficiaries is the Nambour Hear and Say Centre.

It also provides support to the Maleny Girl Guides, Disabled Scouts, the STEMM (Supporting Teenagers with Education, Mothering and Mentoring) project at Burnside High School, TS Centaur Maleny Naval Cadets, Maleny School chaplaincies, the Rural Fire Brigade and Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

In times of natural disasters, both at home and overseas, Maleny Quota reaches out to provide financial support. Most recently this has been in Queensland for drought-affected farmers and their families.

Purpose built training centre opens its doors A brand new purpose-built martial arts training centre has opened its doors in Landsborough.

Ground Force (BJJ & MMA) will now offer hinterland locals classes in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), combative mixed martial arts (MMA) and kickboxing.

Head coach Rob Bowen said that classes in these three styles of martial arts would be offered to suit all levels of fitness and experience. However, he is particularly keen to target beginners or those wishing to find out more about martial arts training but have previously not been comfortable or have had concerns about injury.

“Our classes will appeal to people who are interested in improving their fitness and confidence levels in a safe, friendly and highly supervised environment,” Rob said.

“Suitable for anyone aged over 13 years, we individually cater for all body types and fitness levels in a friendly and welcoming environment.”

With more than 40 years martial arts experience and a multi-disciplinary black belt holder, Rob brings an incredible wealth of knowledge and instruction to his classes.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial arts and combat sports system that focuses on grappling with particular emphasis on ground fighting. It is particularly good for women as a self-defence mechanism as it utilises body positions and leverage to neutralise stronger opponents.

Currently classes are scheduled five afternoons a week and are made up of both male and female members ranging from fundamental levels of ability learning basic techniques and self-defense skills through to advance classes moving towards competition levels.

U3A Sunshine Coast is encouraging people aged 55 years and over to come and join a relaxed, friendly group for table tennis at the Beerwah Community Centre from 11am–2pm each Wednesday.

Local Steve Palmer said it was wonderful that with the support of U3A six new table tennis tables and equipment had been purchased so locals could give the sport a go.

“Table tennis is great for your overall wellbeing and is great for the mind, body and soul. Table tennis is good for improving both mental and physical conditions,” Steve said.

If you are interested in taking part, you don’t have to stay for the whole three-hour session.

You can come and go as your schedule allows.

However, to participate in this activity you must join U3A (12-month membership) and pay the semester’s course fee of $45, which works out to be is just over $2 a week.

Community Groups The Woodies work on show Contributed by John Andrews The Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild was among many participants on show at the Australia Day celebrations at the Maleny Showgrounds.

Apart from the comprehensive display of articles crafted by members, there were also working displays of woodturning, scroll sawing, wood carving and pyrography (pictures etched into wood with a hot iron).

A few people expressed an interest in joining the guild, which operates Monday-Saturday inclusive from 8-11.30am.

The guild has two large sheds located on the Montville Sports Ground, about three kilometres south of Montville.

It has a membership of more than 150 men and women and has a wonderful assortment of hand tools and machinery. Most disciplines of woodwork are catered for.

Playgroup fun returns

The fun has started for the year at Mooloolah Valley Playgroup with the theme of nursery rhymes for first term.

Playgroup coordinator Natasha Odgers said little ones aged 0-5 years come together each week for making friends, craft, sand play, playdough, toys, puzzles, ball play, interactive learning, reading and singing group time and, of course, the food.

“We have a very friendly group of parents and carers who love a chat over a cuppa as well as the occasional social night out for dinner,” she said.

Mooloolah Valley Playgroup is held every Wednesday during school terms from 9.30-11am at the Mooloolah State School Before and After School Care building, 48 King Road, next to the Mooloolah Pool.

There is a $2 donation per child and people are asked to bring fruit or another healthy snack to share. Newcomers are encouraged.

Over the Australia Day weekend, a karaoke competition was held at the Glasshouse Mountains Tavern, with the finals held on Monday afternoon.

On the two most recent public holidays, Maleny had thousands of visiting tourists, no doubt to see for themselves the beauty that all of us see in the town and hinterland we love.

And they all search the town for a place to take a quick stop, enjoy a local meal, or just have a coffee or two. On both days, we visited our favourite ice cream, cheese and coffee shop, which was overrun with thirsty tourists.

Why was that? Nearly all the similar coffee shops in town were closed!

What is it with Maleny shops? How about the local Chamber of Commerce becoming more active and encouraging their members to pick up their game.

Microplastics

The expanding problem with microplastics now looks like it’s in agricultural lands transferred to food products, and not just in the oceans as we thought earlier. In a recent article the ABC said: "Scientists say microplastics are all over farmlands, but we're ignoring it" (ABC Rural, January 17).

The main focus on microplastics has been almost entirely in the world's oceans, but an even bigger problem could be right here on our land. Between 2,800 and 19,000 tonnes of microplastics are applied to Australian farmland each year through biosolids, according to research in the 'Science of

In the ABC Rural article, Dr Martyn Futter, an associate professor at the Swedish Agricultural University, said sources such as clothing fibres, tyre debris in stormwater and microbeads in cleaning products were contaminating wastewater. "These tiny particles of plastic last for a long period of time, and they can be accumulated by organisms and they can transfer from point of entry into any organisms' tissues," he said.

This is a very concerning result of agricultural practices as not only fish, but also humans, may be subject to microplastics going into our cell tissues.

What can we do? Well, the Australian Government is working on the development of a national action plan to implement the 2018 National Waste Policy with strategies that will help improve the environmental management of waste and resource recovery. But will it be thorough enough?

Plastic can contain hazardous substances like endocrine disrupters and carcinogens and these can leak out causing ecological effects on soil health.

"We don't know very much at all about possible transfer to crops or possible transfer to animals so we're very much in the dark," one scientist said.

As a human race we are certainly bespoiling our planet. What will it take to turn it around? Radical lifestyle changes.

Five-year-old Glasshouse Mountains local Mia was born with Perthes disease, a rare childhood condition that affects the hip, which means she has recently undergone surgery for a bone graft on her hip, requiring her to be in a hip spica cast for six weeks with possibly physiotherapy to follow.

The cost of this surgery has already exceeded $15,000 and the medical bills have become quite excessive as she had to have the operation through the private system but was not covered by private health insurance.

With Mia needing 24-hour care and her mum Karen Hogan not being able to work during this time, the stress of having to pay these medical bills was becoming quite overwhelming for them.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to assist and both Mia and her mum are grateful for any support the community can offer.

The mountain

Irresistible flash of inspiration flares up lighting me on the inside.

I can’t help but follow the sudden calling, turning my vehicle off the everyday path and taking it on a detour.

It has just stopped raining, white evaporations are hovering over the wet shimmering asphalt that disappears under the rotating wheels.

Fifteen minute drive separates us but I know She is closer than that. I can already sense Her noble presence.

Trees are too tall, too dense to see anything behind them yet.

But wait, I just caught a glimpse of Her proud strong posture standing still, looming through the tree trunks that are hastily flashing past.

My heart races. I’m going to see Her again, absorb Her mighty energy infused with the warmth of a caring mother.

In anticipation, I turn off the main road, the trees part, revealing the magnificent view of Mount Beerwah. Here I am at Her feet feeling so tiny and so blessed to stand next to this majestic mountain emitting calmness and peace, turning all my worries into dust picked up by the light wind and spread over the valley.

The rustle of leaves, the birds tweeting, the gentle movements of summer wind, the dewy smell of recent rain and resinous pines - all together merge into a beautiful music.

Featuring a huge range of talent from locally based performers to those from further afield, the blackboard sessions generally showcase ten acts for just $10 entry.

Hosted by the Maleny RSL and run by Jacinta ‘Regalia’ Foale and Mark ‘Sparky’ Paltridge, the night features an array of talent with a diversity of performances and styles. Music Today Why do we write songs?

As an introduction to a song writing workshop that is beginning in Eudlo in February*, I thought it might be interesting to consider why people write songs.

Looking at the success of some artists may be enough to stir you because you are good at music and would like to make money from it.

However, if this is your primary motivation then it is probably not for you. It is an art and will require dedication if you are going to excel at it.

Most songwriters agree that you need to write a lot of songs before you start to get the hang of it, and even then there is no guarantee that the rest of the world will like what you do. Part of the reason for that may be that you are not an exceptional or original performer and in most cases you need top artists to perform your material if it is to be widely heard. So on the performing aspect side, consider the marketing of your work, which is essential. If you have a modicum of talent, are persistent and develop a good method and find respectable mentors, then you can become a first-class songwriter.

Of course, some people write songs just because they want to and this is a wonderful reason for doing it. You may feel you have something to say and song writing is your canvas, or you might just be inspired, eg, last night’s extraordinary dream, and want to transcribe it in one form or other. It could be therapeutic - many know the solace to be found in creative writing. One surprising but often found explanation is that some artists have never felt adequate enough as a performer to sing covers, so they write their own material. Or, and this may surprise you even more, as they play with other writers’ songs they find they change them into their own and it feels satisfying enough to become their primary song writing method, ie, rewrite someone else’s song.

As any professional songwriter will tell you, method is essential to their art. This varies for every artist. Some scour newspapers or the internet for a story they might turn into a song, knowing that with the lyrics sketched out the music will naturally follow. Others, eg, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame, jam with musical ideas, recording as they go along, then pass that tape to their lyricist partner who walks with that music blaring in their ears, allowing lyrical ideas to appear. Hinterland Kids First day of prep is a family affair

By Sandy Johnson Remember when the first day of school consisted of mum pushing children out the front door saying: “Have a good day”?

The children would join a group of neighbourhood kids going past and walk to school together.

Somehow everyone survived but things have certainly changed.

At Glasshouse Christian College (GCC) there were grandmas, grandpas, aunties and friends as well as mums and dads. It was lovely to see so many people giving up their time and arranging to be off work in order to give their special prep person the love and attention their first day of school deserved.

GCC prep teachers have been introducing little children to school life for years and they know how to do it well.

Beerwah State School’s two prep classes had a fabulous start to their first year at school.

Deputy principal Deb Lawrence said that on the first day, all the staff were impressed as both prep classes showed the rest of the school how it’s done by being active learners and showing ‘Kandoo’ respect for their teacher and classmates.

“The students enjoyed their first week activities, learning letters and sounds as well as specialist lessons in music, PE, health, dance and drama,” she said.

“We are looking forward to a wonderful 2019.”

A chaplaincy fundraising dinner to support the Landsborough State School chaplaincy program will be held on Tuesday, February 26 from 6pm at the Coffee Club at Beerwah Village on Peachester Road.

Vacation care wrap up, and before and after school care With local children back at school, now is a great opportunity to reflect on some highlights of the Glass House Early Education Centre vacation program, which recently wrapped up for another holiday period.

Extended over seven weeks of the school holiday break, the centre’s vacation care program was a buzzing hive of engaging and interesting activity.

The well thought out program provided a super fun mix of incursions and excursions, as well as many activities suggested by the children to ensure any possible holiday boredom was kept well at bay.

Holiday program highlights included Spinworks and street science as well as trips to Australia Zoo, bowling and mini-golf. The children were able to participate in many craft activities and cooking programs, which always proved popular (especially the tastings at the end).

in big news for the centre’s 2018 kindy group, for the first time the graduating kindy children were able to attend vacation care activities before starting in the schoolies program this year. This was very exciting for all the graduating kindy children.

With the start of the school year it’s worth noting that Glass House Early Education Centre before and after school care program caters to all local schools in the community.

Centre director Dee McCann explained that a dedicated bus serviced the schools at Glass House, Beerburrum, Beerwah and Glasshouse Christian College as part of their pick up and drop off zone.

“All children commencing prep can have the peace of mind knowing our educators will collect them from their classroom and support their transition to big school. Our program for before school care also has an inclusive breakfast

program to assist our busy families to ensure they are off to the best start to their day possible,” Dee said.

At the afterschool care program, the children have the opportunity to take part in a homework club, as well as sporting and craft activities. Importantly, children also get a chance to have some down time from their busy day of learning.

Schoolies coordinator Ange Hardy is a longterm staff member who fully understands the importance of running an effective program to facilitate a supportive and holistic environment for all children.

State Member for Caloundra Landsborough community meeting on rail overpass The Landsborough community is waiting to hold a community forum on the future of the Landsborough rail overpass but the verdict is still out on whether the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will have representatives available to attend.

My office wrote to TMR on January 7 asking if they would be available to attend a public forum in Landsborough in early 2019 to provide concerned residents and business owners with more information about the overpass plan.

Given the state government’s decision to push ahead with an overpass at the Landsborough Station, the community is eager to meet again as part of the promised consultation. Time is marching on and we need to get the details of this forum locked in but I am hesitant to do so without proper representation from TMR. This is a community that already feels it has long been left in the dark so I think it is vital to this forum that representatives from TMR be there to answer questions and hear the concerns of the community. You can be assured there are many questions to be addressed on land ownership, consultation and community input, to name just few. As soon as I have details confirmed with TMR I will let residents and business owners in Landsborough know when and where the forum will take place.

The biggest and most important thing Landsborough has fought for is to be heard and to be communicated with about a proposal that impacts the very future of their town. I will do everything I can to ensure that happens.

The store will be officially opened on Friday February 8 at 4pm and the locals are invited to come along and enjoy the celebration.

In the past two decades The Pump House Beerwah has gone from strength to strength and these days employs 11 staff across its sales, services and projects departments.

Branch manager Alan Hungerford has been with the company for just over a year and has been instrumental in growing the business and improving efficiencies.

Alan said with the new suburb of Aura well under way and a variety of housing estates planned on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast as well as in Beerwah itself, The Pump House expansion was an investment in the local economy’s future.

Alan also pointed out the importance of the berry farming industry in the area with many berry farmers being long-term Pump House customers.

Another major area of business is pool products with an ever-increasing range of pumps, filters and other products to make sure your pool is clean and ready for the months ahead.

“No matter what your pump or irrigation requirements are, The Pump House has you covered,” he said.

From the churches Who is Jesus?

At the centre of the Christian faith is a man named Jesus Christ. After all, the word ‘Christian’ literally means ‘follower of Christ’. But who is this guy and why is he so important?

It is impossible for me to pack enough in this newspaper column to properly discuss who Jesus is, so I want to focus on part of a well known Bible story that is often overlooked. The story is found in John 18:1-11.

The time of Jesus’ death was approaching and he was spending time with his disciples. Judas Iscariot approaches with a big platoon of armed soldiers and a group of officials. Jesus walks up to them and says: “Who is it you want?” They reply: “Jesus of Nazareth.” “I am he,” says Jesus. When he said this Judas, the soldiers and officials “drew back and fell to the ground”.

Jesus then repeats himself: “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they squeak.

This aspect of Jesus can sometimes be missed.

You see, there seems to be this myth that if you are a Christian then you must be a weak, pathetic do-gooder. Well, in this story Jesus kind of throws this myth out the window. In fact, throughout all the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John there are piles of stories of Jesus stirring up the status quo, spending time with people who were the unloved – tax collectors, people with leprosy and outcasts. He would take on the religious leaders, challenging them for their hypocrisy. In the three years of his ministry he healed the sick, preached about God’s love and challenged people to love others.

I want to encourage you to find out more of who Jesus is. God bless you and your family.

Outspoken with Dr Anne Summers

The first event for 2019 for Outspoken, the extended literary festival taking the form of occasional conversations with writers, will feature renowned author, journalist and political commentator Dr Anne Summers at the Maleny Community Centre on Sunday, March 3 at 5.30pm.

Anne has been prominent in Australian media, politics and feminism for more than four decades. She is the author of eight books, including ‘Damn Whores and God’s Police’, still in print after 44 years. Her other books include ‘Gamble for Power’, ‘Ducks on a Pond’ and the recently released ‘Unfettered and Alive’, a memoir that she will be discussing with Steven Lang at Outspoken.

The event will also introduce Melissa Fagan, the author of ‘What Will Be Worn: A McWhirters story’. For all who know Brisbane, McWhirters, a once celebrated department store in Fortitude Valley, is an icon. Melissa’s book is a tender exploration of self and family, speaking to the ways in which the legacy of others can truly enrich our own relationships.

Be aware of underground and overhead high voltage

With so many people working in their yard during summer, Energex is reminding everyone to be aware of underground and overhead electrical dangers in and around their property.

Digging, cutting and pruning trees in the yard is commonplace for thousands of Queenslanders and according to Energex’s safety advisor Chris Rose these jobs should always be done with electrical safety in mind.

“Whether digging a new garden bed, drilling a hole for a fence post or planting a new tree, we’re asking people to be aware of underground and overhead power both in the yard and on the footpath,” he said.

“For those digging within their property boundary they can organise the services of a certified cable locator who can come and identify all underground services within their yard.

“By doing so the homeowner can not only save a costly bill if they had accidently struck an underground service, the information could also save their life.”

Mr Rose said if anyone was digging outside their fence line or footpath they could contact a free service to locate nearby cables.

“Before digging on the footpath people should always contact ‘Dial before you dig’ on www.1100.com.au or call 1100,” he said.

“The ‘Dial before you dig’ service can assist property owners with plans and advice of any registered underground utilities outside a property boundary.”

Mr Rose also warned that electrical hazards are not just underground and people should take care and stay line aware of the powerlines above them as well .

“There are very few second chances when coming into contact with any electricity, so if someone’s doing any work such as trimming trees, working on their roof or carrying tall objects around their property they must always look above for overhead wires,” he said.

Keeping your rainwater tank safe Sunshine Coast residents are urged to keep their rainwater tank safe this summer with regular, sensible maintenance. While rainwater tanks generally only involve low maintenance that definitely does not mean no maintenance.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) Public Health Unit director, Dr Andrew Langley, said monitoring your rainwater tank is an important responsibility, consisting of a range of visual inspections rather than laboratory testing of rainwater quality.

Maintenance of your tanks is needed to maintain good water quality and prevent mosquitoes breeding.

Here are the top monitoring and maintenance activities that will help you keep your rainwater tank system safe:

“These people should consider disinfecting the water before drinking or cooking with it. You can do this by bringing the water to the boil and letting it cool before use,” he said.

Rainwater may be used without further treatment for flushing toilets, the cold water laundry tap and for watering gardens and lawns as these uses generally present a low risk of disease.

Cucumber

I’m not what you’d call a fan of the cucumber. In fact, it’s one of the few edible members of the plant kingdom that I have absolutely no interest in eating at all. But I know others love them, including someone who lives in the same house.

So occasionally, and reluctantly, I relent and grow them in the garden.

Here’s some tips if you would like to do the same.

Grow them from seed. There are lots of different varieties and, in general, the commercial seedlings only offer you a couple of choices.

Cucumbers are in the same family as zucchini, marrow, squash and pumpkin … and they all have the same characteristic. They only germinate if the soil temperature is over 20-odd degrees. So winter germination will generally not do so well.

Sow them 1cm deep in a seed raising mix in a container that is at least 10cm deep – that gives the roots a good volume to grow into.

Let the seedlings develop a couple of leaves before planting them into an organic rich soil bed. Alternatively, you can plant them in a large pot or container – but it needs to be large as their roots need space.

Cucumbers are natural climbers, so give them some sort of structure to climb up. It’s much easier to find and pick the fruits later if they’re off the ground, and it keeps them away from pests (and other critters).

I have had great success by growing two cucumber plants in a large pot (at least 50cm diameter) over which I’ve placed a tube of chicken wire at least 1.5m high (2m is best).

Secure the tube of chicken wire otherwise it will topple over with the weight of the plants later on.

I find that this method saves space and means that you can grow them wherever you have the best amount of direct sunlight.

Cucumbers tend to be better self-pollinators than zucchini or pumpkin flowers, so you should get a fair fruit set without having to resort to pollinating the flowers yourself.

Keep the moisture and nutrients up to them as they need constant amounts of both.

As for pests, the main ones you’ll need to watch for are caterpillars and fruit fly. Use whatever method of control you’re most comfortable with … natural, chemical or exclusion.

Using exclusion mesh is easier if you grow them using the chicken wire tube technique. But you can mesh bag each fruit if you wish.

Make sure you don’t leave the fruits too long before picking, otherwise they’ll be giants and you’ll find the seeds developing too much inside.

Smaller fruit are (apparently) better tasting anyway.

I have this eight year old tree in my backyard. This is the first year it has fruited/flowered. Could you please identify the tree?

Looks to me like you have a small leaved tamarind tree (Diploglottis campbellii).

It’s a native rainforest tree that is now rare in the wild due to land clearing but has been widely grown as a garden ornamental and a park and street feature tree.

It grows into a small tree (about 8m) but develops a lovely spreading canopy, so is a great shade tree in the backyard. It can make an excellent tub specimen plant as well.

The photo you’ve sent of the fruit is pretty typical of this species … that lovely red colour is just so striking.

Another good point about it is that it’s a bush tucker tree. The large red fruits contain a tangy orange pulp.

Many people have used them in various recipes including jams, jellies, sauces, fruit chutneys, spreads, coulis and to flavour drinking water. Once mature, they will bear kilos of fruit a year.

They’re also very popular with native animals such as possums and fruit bats.

They prefer part shade and a well-drained soil that’s rich in organic matter, so you will need to keep it well watered through the dry season and apply an organic or slow-release fertiliser in the early spring.

Shaping up as real premiership contenders Contributed by Stuart McIntosh Beerwah Glasshouse United Football Club played out an entertaining 2-2 draw against National Premier League opposition Moreton Bay United FC in last week’s pre-season match at Wolter Park, with Cameron Nairn scoring a brace. With six of the team unable to play yet still achieving such an exciting win says a lot for their premiership chances against such a strong opposition.

First team coach Daniel Carew said he was really proud of the group.

“We had to overcome a lot of obstacles last night, with three players picking up serious injuries. The boys fought hard and played some good football.

That was a great test for us last night," he said after the match.

The Green Machine would like to thank our fantastic supporters for making the journey and proudly wearing the green and white.

Could the first Premiership Cup for many years be ours? Hard training and preparation will tell.

Follow our teams by attending the games starting mid-March, not just in the first division but all divisions and, of course, our premiership women could make this year a double. Will they bring home the cup again?

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Monday, January 28 was an exciting day of bowls as we had a full rink, with Maleny having its maximum number of bowlers to compete against visiting teams from Caboolture Lakes, Kilcoy, Woodford and Mapleton.

The games were played in a great spirit and close tussles were the order of the day. Using wins and margins to determine the winners saw Maleny teams coming out with the winner and runner up for the day. Congratulations to Miles Allen and Graeme Glover on their win and runners up Ian Chatterton and Jim King. Thank you all for supporting our very popular monthly pairs challenge. Wednesday night was great fun. A number of new bowlers have shown strong interest in

The club set up an entertaining display for the Australia Day event held at the Maleny Showgrounds on Saturday, January 26. The mini field played pretty well, so congratulations are in order to the ground staff who prepared it. We had quite a few people who showed interest in the game and several who want to come to our come and try day on Saturday, February 9. Well done to all those who showed up and helped with the display.

What was looking like a hot afternoon on Sunday, January 27, turned benign, with a gentle breeze taking the sting out of the sun. Conditions were beautiful as Vince Carbery and Stuart Craig played well at times to draw with Ken Barker and Helen eight all. Helen’s chocolate frosted slice at afternoon tea was a bright spot in proceedings.

At the same time Frances and Jasmine Harper demonstrated that croquet is not just about

precision, deep thought, heavy tactics and ruthless competition but can also be played for fun. They played two games of golf and one of Aussie croquet with scores withheld.

Play days on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds are 2.10pm for 2.30pm start on Thursdays and Sundays.
