ast week I had the chance to go along to the local CWA International Day celebrations in Peachester and what a great event it was.

What better way is there to be immersed in another culture than through their food and drinks – it was fantastic.

For once my timing was perfect and I arrived to take some photos – just as the food was being served – so I had no choice but to sit down and enjoy the Turkish feast.

Then following the beautiful first course, a buffet table of all types of sweets were laid out. As I wasn’t familiar with many of them – I was then forced to try one of everything – just for reporting purposes, so I could be truthful and honest.

Well – I am sure that even the Masterchef judges would have been blown away by just how great all of the food was.

She seemed so impressed with the efforts that our local ladies (and some of their male support crew) had put into bringing the day together and how much all the guests were enjoying the day.

Residents fear for their lives The residents of Twin Cedars over - 50's retirement village on Steve Irwin Way at Beerburrum aren’t trained daredevils, but according to the Twin Cedars Home Owners Association, they are dicing with death whenever they drive in or out of their residential community.

The situation has gradually worsened as the volume of traffic along Steve Irwin Way has increased over recent years.

And the fact is the road along that stretch is still designated at 100km/hr – as opposed to most of the rest of the road which has been lowered to 80km/hr or less for safety reasons.

“Pulling into or out of this fast-moving traffic flow has become, for many motorists, a very risky business … literally, a form of Russian roulette on wheels, said Association President Margaret Chapman.

“Near misses are almost a daily occurrence.

“We now fear that it is only a matter of when – not if – we or our families, friends, or visitors could become another Steve Irwin Way fatality statistic if something is not urgently done,” she said.

After meeting with local State Member Andrew Powell, and discussing their issues, the Association last week travelled to Brisbane for a deputation with the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Scott Emerson.

Margaret said that, despite Main Roads officers present at the meeting giving no cause for optimism for any positive changes, the attitude of the Minister was positive and heartening.

“We were encouraged by the reception we received from Minister Emerson, and are hopeful that the interim (and very low-cost) measures we proposed would be given favourable consideration.”

Twin Cedars Homeowners Association members forced to make a deadly dash The solutions put to the Minister included reducing the speed limit from 100km/hr to 70km/hr from Moffats Road to the Beerburrum turnoff; and improving the entry and exit turnoffs between Steve Irwin Way and Twin Cedars.

“We are aware of the Government's long-term planning proposals to widen the Steve Irwin Way with the associated traffic flow improvements.

“What we are proposing is an interim measure (at very little cost ) to alleviate the very real dangers that exist now, and that will get worse in the future if remedial measures are not taken,” explained Margaret.

Andrew Powell said that he understands the concerns of the local community regarding safety on the Steve Irwin Way. “While my ultimate goal is to see the North Coast rail duplicated and the corresponding Steve Irwin Way upgraded, due to the fiscal position we have inherited, we need to consider what we can do in the short term. I’ve spoken to Minister Emerson and look forward to finding a solution,” he said.

Making Strides is a group of local mums wanting to do something proactive to combat women's cancer.

Michelle Simpkins, Jasmine Morgan, Jayne Hinds, Desiree Van Hoesel, Nicole Bradley and Kelly Yeo have joined forces to create their own team to participate in ‘The Weekend to End Women's Cancer’ which will raise money for the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) and Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH).

The challenge the girls have taken on is a two day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Brisbane.

Team member Michelle said they’re ready to do something bold and powerful in effort to end women’s cancers once and for all.

“Our commitment is based on our love for our fellow sisters, mothers, grandmas, daughters, nieces, and friends everywhere. It’s based on the realisation that we each need to do our part in this fight,” she said.

Students take up the challenge Schools in the Glasshouse Country Coalition of Schools came together for the 2nd year of the Inter-school Math’s Challenge held at Beerwah State School.

There were 95 students who attended on the day, representing Years 5, 6 and 7 from Mooloolah, Landsborough, Peachester, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Beerburrum and Elimbah.

The groups undertook a number of team challenges including a ‘math’s relay’ and there was a real buzz of excitement in the air.

Unlike a normal math’s test, the student’s needed to apply their math’s knowledge and rely on working in teams to get results.

Acting Principal of Beerwah State School, Mrs Michelle McCabe said it was a great opportunity for the students to get involved in the challenge and a chance for them to interact with other students from the local district who they will end up at high school with.

Steve Case, Assistant Regional Director of North Coast visited the school on the day and chatted with students involved. He said the day was important for students to showcase their academic excellence.

Beerwah State School Math’s Teacher Margaret Grambauer said it was also great to have math’s teachers from Beerwah High attending on the day, not only to assist with scoring, but to meet their future students.

The ladies of the Peachester and Beerwah CWA branches joined forces this year for their very special International Day celebrations.

This year’s event was held at the Peachester Hall and the focus of the day’s food, entertainment, and learning was Turkey.

The ladies created some spectacular displays featuring all aspects of the Turkish geography, arts, agriculture, food, music, dance and costume. However one of the most spectacular highlights of the day, was the belly dancing demonstration performance and the serving of an amazing Turkish banquet.

The Beerwah ladies were responsible for the main meal, serving lamb Kostas, a vegetable stew, with Turkish bread and a garlic yogurt accompaniment.

Not surprisingly at a CWA event, the dessert table was absolutely heaving under the weight of some very tasty sweets and plates of traditional Turkish Delight make by the Peachester ladies.

As part of the entertainment – there was also a 25 question trivia about Turkey which put the ladies grey matter to the test, as well as a guest speaker who shared her knowledge of travelling in Turkey.

“It is difficult for CWA to recruit new members, particularly younger women, but today is a great example of just how much the members enjoy being involved as well as learning so much,” she said.

Next year the ladies will be moving their focus a little closer to home when they turn their attention to Vietnam.

Paul lets his bowls do the talking

There’s more to local Beerwah Ray White Real Estate owner Paul O’Brien than meets the eye.

Mild mannered real estate agent by day … super-powered lawn bowling champion by night.

Paul and wife Jo have run the Ray White business in Beerwah since 2009, and he’s probably helped a lot of locals buy, sell or rent properties across our Glasshouse Country region.

But how many would know that over the last couple of years, Paul has been taking out Queensland lawn bowls championships.

His latest win was in the Pairs competition at the State Championships held at TewantinNoosa two weeks ago.

Paul can now add this latest trophy to his 2011 State Triples and his 2012 State Fours wins.

The Pairs Championship was won with his bowls partner Ben Savva from the Wynnum Manly club.

Not surprisingly, the Ray White office won the Glasshouse Country Business Bowls Spring Series last year.

So if anyone wants to have a go at knocking off a State Champion – you know what green to find

him on at Club Glass House, with the next Spring Series competition starting in September.

Women enjoying social group The Glass House Mountains Women’s Social Group has been getting theatrical. Last month, the women’s social group had a visit from Teula De’gars to explore applied theatre, which is a form of theatre used in public spaces to address social issues in a fun and creative way. The women used applied theatre to explore social isolation and deepen their friendships with each other in a safe and supportive environment where it’s okay to be out of your comfort zone.

The applied theatre was a new experience for most of the group. One of the women said at first they weren’t really that keen to be involved, but once they started, it was a lot of fun.

There were two women who came for the first time, and amongst the fun environment, they found it very comfortable to bond with the group.

The theatrical fun also brought out more shine in some of the quieter members of the group.

The Glass House Women's Social Group, which established in July last year, is a means for women in the local Hinterland community to come together and build meaningful friendships through fun and creative activities and events. The group offers a supportive environment, where all women are welcome.

The women's group is now meeting weekly on Wednesday afternoons, 12.30 – 2.30pm at the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, Ryan Street. The group runs an outing on the last Wednesday of the month, a facilitated activity every second Wednesday of the month and a casual cuppa and chat each other Wednesday afternoon.

Will Council’s draft strategy triple our economy?

Sunshine Coast Council have recently released their draft Economic Development Strategy.

With the stated aim of tripling our economy by 2033, the strategy is a significant cornerstone document in the sustainable economic future of our local region.

However, Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce President, Bob McLean isn’t so convinced that the strategy places our local region in the best Bob McLean with Economic Development competitive position.

Task force member Bill Darcy Mayor Mark Jamieson said the time is right to set a new economic vision for the region, The Sunshine Coast – The Natural Advantage.

“We have set clear goals; a $33 billion economy by 2033, household incomes above the state average, and 20% of our goods and services produced for export,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“These goals are ambitious but achievable – and this document proposes some of the actions we need to take to transform to a strong, new economy.

Bob said there are a number of short-comings in the draft document for Glasshouse Country communities.

“Its 20-year outlook identifies an approach we need to take in order to become more competitive, demand-driven and responsive to national and global markets,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“The strategy fails to articulate the economic strengths of the hinterland as an existing economic driver and as a significant contributor to the economic growth corridor” Bob Mclean said.

“Economic drivers don’t have to be ‘new’ to be a successful contributor.

Don’t reinvent the wheel – make a better wheel, this is what smart business.

“Rather than dismantling, the strategy reinforces the perceived barrier between the eastern and western sides of the Bruce Highway.

“The document promotes Natural Advantage, but gives no recognition of the existing assets as a Natural Advantage.

“The existing public transport assets; our National Parks as tourism and environmental assets; the Northern Rail Line; our direct access to the Darling Downs and the Burnett Region into Beerwah (which is an identified Growth Centre); and strong existing well serviced communities. These are all existing assets which need recognition.

“The strategy fails to acknowledge the under utilisation of the existing rail corridor and the number of local jobs it would create by increasing the rail usage.

“The Hinterland communities are a hub for home based businesses and smart clean businesses in a location where residents can live, walk or ride to work. The strategy fails to recognise the real benefit of these.

“Linking with this is not recognising the community value of having people live and work in the hinterland communities.

“The Council needs to acknowledge and recognise that the Glasshouse Country region is a positive asset for the whole of the Sunshine Coast, and needs to be given more opportunities for the business community to thrive and prosper,” Bob said..

To give local business people a better understanding of that the Draft Economic Development Strategy is all about, the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce have organised a free networking night at the Beerwah Hotel on June 19, commencing at 5.30pm.

Here key Council staff involved in the development of the strategy will present the basics of the document, and will take direct feedback on what the local business community thinks are the strengths and opportunities of Glasshouse Country.

To get to Namuamua as a tourist, you travel on the river in a long boat – passing villages all along the way.

Kim said one of the things that immediately struck them about the area is that while the housing was basic, by Australian standards, everywhere they saw was very clean and tidy. Clearly the locals took great pride and respect in their villages.

The destination of Namuamua is home to the area’s primary school and has 60 – 80 students. Many of them come from the surrounding villages.

They arrive on the Monday, stay all week and travel back to their villages on Friday, some travel up to three hours each way on foot to get there.

Kim was so taken by the villagers and the school and was impressed how happy, grateful and humble the people were and was even more amazed by the lack of educational and other basic resources.

So on returning home Kim and her husband and daughter have been purchasing items for the school children and medical supplies for the village – however they quickly discovered that the cost of postage has limited their capacity to assist the people of Namuamua Village.

Kim has now enlisted the support of her neighbour Judith, who previously had also travelled to Fiji. They have organised a garage sale to raise funds to cover future postage costs.

The ladies would love to extend an invitation to the community to come along on June 15, to 90 Outlook Drive, Glass House Mountains from 7.00am – 3.00pm. There will also be a sausage sizzle if they can secure donations of sausages / bread.

So put your thinking caps on and take a photograph of our ‘Emergency Services in Action’ indicative of the local Glasshouse area, be it the Rural Fire Brigade, or the Auxiliary Fire Brigade, SES, Police, or Ambulance, or an outstanding photograph of our ‘Iconic Glasshouse Mountains’.

Twelve Images will be chosen by judges and will feature in the 2014 Glasshouse Country Rotary Calendar along with great prizes donated by Australia Zoo. Glasshouse Country View Club On Wednesday, May 15, our club hosted Dolina Somerville who practices acupuncture, herbal medicine and Chinese remedial massage. Dolina imparted some extremely useful information related to chronic pain, cramps, weight loss, and pain management, etc. A club volunteer, Judith, then had five pins inserted in her head, hands and feet as part of an acupuncture demonstration. After the demonstration Judith commented that it was painless and she actually felt on a real ‘high’.

New member Annette Crosby was welcomed and presented with her View Club badge by President Margaret Donoghoe.

View Clubs support the Smith Family in many ways by helping disadvantaged Australian children with their education. If you wish to join our club, please contact Margaret on 5435 2172.

Led by Lozang Tsultrim (Carla Pearce), a counsellor and Buddhist nun who recently featured in the series Holy Switch on ABC television’s Compass program, the workshop explores the deeper value of kindness, forgiveness, patience, honesty and generosity. Feral dog reality check

Far be it from me to ever judge a person for campaigning against cruelty to animals, but – Jaylene Musgrave (Vegan Warriors) goes too far.

I have it on excellent authority that these dubious looking, black and tan (largely) ‘Dingos’ actually have very little (often none) Dingo DNA when tested. I love animals. It is part of my paid employment (sadly) to calm, love and comfort some of the unwanted pets as they are euthanized, when there is no option. These are potential ‘forerunners’ of pets otherwise dumped or left to roam and breed (and become feral), because some of the ‘animal loving’ public only take their responsibility half way – extended all the way to misguidedly ‘protecting’ their ‘wedding tackle’.

We have a Land for Wildlife Property, have been monitoring feral dog, fox and cat kill of our diminishing native wildlife on IR cameras for some time. It is sickening. Perhaps this lady would care to view some of those images. I have been involved in animal welfare and wildlife care for many years of my life, and am currently undertaking my dog training cert. So I DO take a keen interest.

Try telling any animal which is being ripped apart alive, that these introduced animals have a ‘right’.

Farmers? – save your vitriol for factory farming.

That is where the real suffering takes place! Not where animals are given the freedom of the sun and open paddocks, in which to enjoy their lives before being helplessly disembowelled alive by dogs. Often they are the loved animals (or pets – yes – they kill dogs and cats too) of ‘keen, green’, smallholders who DO care about their ethics.

1080? No poison is ‘nice’ – but the stats/facts are there for you to read, as I have, needs a much higher dose to be lethal to other species and has less ‘by-catch’. I signed my forms, because the alternatives are far worse.

Despite the recent comments that my letter re:signs on the highway was somehow suspect, my motivation was simply to highlight a situation where council regulations governing the display of signs were being blithely ignored, as they still are. Apparently some people feel that rules are just for others and certainly do not apply to them.

Firstly, what do you expect of this council?

Our councillor and mayor did the wrong thing all through the last elections and it is interesting to see where detectives in Victoria are now looking seriously at allegations concerning our Prime Minister. It is a pity we do not have detectives interested enough in Queensland to look into local council matters and other similar matters.

I could go back, however, it’s just not a big enough paper.

Residents and rate payers who vote should open their eyes and look at what is going on around them. We put these people in and expect them to do the right thing, it is even more important these days as they are now on very good money.

I wonder if our illustrious mayor will take a cut in pay, as Noosa will no longer be a responsibility to him?

There is a lot of scuttlebutt about our last council elections, no one appeared to worry then, so why complain now? However, it would appear that the top job was worth a lot, one wonders why?

Where are those detectives?

As for the signage above Setters old shop, I think it is doing the candidate more harm than good, so leave it there, it allows interested people time to ponder and look for alternatives. There is a very big alternative.

Just as an afterthought, what is the Koala to Queensland? And no, it is not our Maroons football team. Our local council really do require being looked into and quickly.

When is something going to be done … get started now

I have been supportive of all the businesses in Beerwah for over 18 years that I have lived here.

I talk to the people in their businesses and hear the same thing over and over – ‘There’s no people around today.’

Last year I went to all the Beerwah Place project meetings and listened to their plans for our town.

We need this town fixed up now – when are they going to get started?

The shopping experience in this town is nil.

It’s one of the oldest hinterland towns, but the last to be thought of when it comes to being improved, and the shops and businesses here are struggling.

We support our town and businesses, when is Rick Baberowski going to? Meeting after meeting, Council staff are paid to attend – is there any funding left over to do anything else?

Maybe expecting to see a hive of activity going on in this town to help and give some hope to the dwindling town is too much to expect.

We have a tourist attraction that attracts millions of people, and yet we have nothing to inspire any tourist into the town. Beerwah is not on their maps – why not?

It’s not beautiful, so do something – support the local businesses and the town now. Get started now.

Shop owners get started now, we are watching the town die.

We’re sick of hot air and talk and meetings – do something now.

We have the Glass House Mountains, maybe some of the town is facing the wrong way?

Everything is more discouraging then encouraging. Businesses have high rents, having to pay to even put tables on the footpaths.

When I visit all the other towns around the coast that have food places, they look beautiful, but ours don’t – why?

They are discouraging – hurry yourselves up.

A police 'facility'

I have read with interest the article by Senior Sergeant Duck (GCNews May 15) explaining the current status of the Landsborough Police Station.

The Senior Sergeant has claimed categorically that the Landsborough Police Station has not closed. He then goes on to explain that the core policing responsibilities, administration and counter inquiries are conducted at Beerwah Police Station. What then, do the alleged Police at Landsborough Police Station do?

Can I go the Landsborough Police Station to conduct business for perhaps, weapons licensing, to hand in found property or just speak to a Police Officer about any matter? The answer is no! For any of these services I would have to attend the Beerwah Police Station. It is true that the Landsborough Police Station is still maintained and perhaps, Police Officers operate from that location, but in what capacity? Are the four extra Police Officers assigned to our area to perform traffic enforcement duties, now working from Landsborough? If so, the Landsborough Police station is now a Traffic Office. If not, where are the Police officers, supposedly staffing the Landsborough Police Station?

The Senior Sergeant’s assurance that the Landsborough Police station has not closed is not comforting. In political terms his explanation would be called ‘Spin’.

It would be more accurate to say that the Queensland Police Service is maintaining a ‘Police Facility’ at Landsborough, not a Police Station.

The reality is that if you live in Landsborough and you require any assistance normally provided by your local Police Station, you now have to travel to the Beerwah Police Station. If you require police to attend your house or business in Landsborough they come from Beerwah.

I’m sure most Landsborough residents now know and accept the fact their local police station is gone and all policing responsibilities have been transferred to the Beerwah Police Station.

This was always going to happen so, why all the secrecy and pretence about the true status of the Landsborough Police Station?

Celebrating 125 years The Elk family who own Woodlands is just one of many local families who have attended Beerwah State School. Next Saturday’s 125th celebrations that kick off from 11.00am, will bring many locals and former locals back to the school for the day.

School Principal Eric Greentree said this year was Eric Greentree (School Principal) John Elks, also a significant milestone for Don Elks, Thelma Elks, Murray Elks and the Woodlands Company, as Justine Baker P&C President they are celebrating their 100 years of operation.

This year the Elk family have generously donated $2,000.00 as a way of acknowledging their long association with Beerwah State School, as well as marking their own Centenary.

Don, Thelma, John and Murray Elks presented the cheque to Principal Eric Greentree and P&C President Justine Baker.

“This is a very generous donation and is very much appreciated by the school, the fireworks are always a highlight of the ‘Beerwah Big Night Out’ and they will go off at 7.00pm,” Eric Greentree said.

Sons, John and Murray, along with their brothers Malcolm and Ian, all attended Beerwah State School and are looking forward to catching up with friends, past pupils and teachers on Saturday.

At only 17, budding scientist and Maleny local Carl Jonsson has created his own formula for success.

Great grades that reflect his hard work at school, extra-curricular involvement, a strive for excellence in everything he sets his mind to, and a passion for science has scored the Pacific Lutheran College student a prestigious place in the National Youth Science Forum’s international program.

The NYSF program provides students with opportunities to participate in scientific, formal, personal development and social activities.

Carl, who has also represented the state for school swimming and kayaking, was one of 35 Year 11 students across the country chosen to attend the international forum, following his recent involvement in the national forum in Canberra.

The high achiever will head to South Africa next month − supported by the Maleny Rotary Club − as part of the six forums being held across the globe.

The 20 day itinerary includes lectures from leading scientists, industry tours showcasing science-related employment opportunities and a guided safari from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls.

Carl will join South Africa’s top 50 science students and seven other Australian students.

“I’m looking forward to meeting other likeminded students and experiencing the rich African culture.”

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,’’ he said.

Carl, who hopes to study nanoscience or materials engineering at university, said he owes much of his success with the NYSF program to his science teacher, Rebecca Ross.

“Miss Ross first introduced me to NYSF and she has been a great support the whole way through,” he said.

Kindy visited by the circus and pirates The Beerwah Kindy children recently had a circus day and throughout the day there were plenty of fun activities, including face painting, making clown face biscuits, ‘tight rope’ walking, balancing on beams, going through hoops and a tunnel, a giant teddy ring toss game, ten pin bowling, juggling, stilt walking, jumping on the trampoline, making popcorn, playing stick the nose on the clown, and playing musical instruments and marching in our circus parade.

The children were really excited to be able to go to Kindy dressed up in their costumes.

The children in the Kookaburra group have been finding lots of sparkling buried treasure in the sand pit and decided that they would like to plan a ‘Pirate Dress Up Party’ at Kindy.

The children came to Kindy dressed as pirates and had such a fun day having their faces painted, singing pirate songs, making treasure maps, pirate flags, ships, telescopes and pirate hats. At outside time there was plenty of buried treasure in the sandpit to search for and dig up. The treasure maps were very useful! The pirate morning tea and lunch treats that the children had decided on were enjoyed by all.

Happy Chappy Week

Chappy Week is an annual event to raise awareness of the value of school chaplains and to raise funds for them.

Landsborough State School's recent Under 8's Day celebrations on May 24 coincided with Chappy Week. The school decided to run a ‘Cupcakes for Chappy’ stall during their Under 8's Day with proceeds from the stall going towards their school chaplaincy program. Cupcakes were donated by school families and sold for $1.00 each. The cupcakes proved very popular not only with school students, but to all visitors into the school that day. An amazing $529.00 was raised - that's a lot of cupcakes sold! School chaplain, Lisa Whysall, was overwhelmed by the response and thanks everyone for their contributions.

The Unity College Careers page on Facebook is the latest initiative by the Unity Pathways Department. The page has been created in order to provide current information about career and pathways opportunities to students and their families.

"While information disseminated via the newsletter or notices can take a few days to reach students, the Facebook page fosters more instant communication," explained the Pathways Coordinator, Mrs Bianca Beard.

The Assistant Principal Student Services, Mr Steve deLaurence said "we are using a medium that students are familiar with and able to engage with easily."

The page is updated regularly with information on College events and current traineeship, scholarship or job opportunities. It also provides links to useful sites to assist with career exploration and decision making.

Once inside, Mrs B faced the horrifying reality that an intruder had entered her home while she was merely metres away, stealing her purse and house keys.

The fear Mrs B felt at the thought that this intruder could re-enter her house at any time, could use her bank cards or steal her identity, was very real.

After phoning the police to report the incident she was left confused about what to do about her missing cards and especially her keys.

One call to Seniors Enquiry Line and Mrs B was calm, knew which cards to cancel and had a plan of action. She then received confirmation from Seniors Enquiry Line’s Support Officer that a Home Assist Officer would visit that day to replace all her locks and house keys. The Seniors Enquiry Line Officer then phoned Queensland Transport, explained Mrs B’s situation and was given a direct line so Mrs B could speak to a helpful officer while avoiding their automated phone system.

Mrs B’s case is a direct example of how Seniors Enquiry Line can help alleviate the distress caused by different situations while providing compassionate support and information. Seniors Enquiry Line is not simply a referral service; they can also be a life saver.

Artists need people too!

Some of you will know that I coordinate the Glasshouse Mountains Musicians Club – a regular ‘open mic’ event at which anyone can get up and perform music. I enjoy the surprise element associated with these sessions - you never quite know who will come.

A colleague who runs a Brisbane music organisation contacted me recently to say a certain artist was in town appearing for him, and he thought he might see if he wanted to play at one of the Musos Club events. I like that. Not just that top players are impressed enough with what they hear of us to want to come along, but also that they want to share their work without the likelihood of a fee. Of course they are also promoting their music and possibly building a larger support or fan base. As small as we are, word gets out and no one can deny the power of people to people networking. Each time an artist performs for an audience who don’t know their work they are potentially building their fan base, and that is an essential for an artist trying to survive as a professional musician today.

So how does this miraculous ‘fan base’ work for the artist? Well in practical terms it provides them with an income as it is their fans who buy their albums and any other merchandise they might peddle, and they also provide the artist with real human contact – something that can be sorely lacking in a life that is often dedicated to shutting oneself away as a creative musician and giving the hours required to hone an art.

Take Toni Childs who by chance appeared for us last Sunday afternoon at our coffee shop session.

Many have heard of her but beyond a song or two may not know her work, so what is their likely reaction after hearing her ‘in the flesh’?

Well, they might want to buy an album, or they might want to go on a mailing list to hear about her upcoming concerts and new album releases.

Or they might just want to Google her name and be provided with a wealth of information reviews, personal details and past bands with which she has played, or they might simply mention her appearance to friends, who then pass it on down through their chain of contacts.

On Sunday, May 26, the Musos Club was at our Coffee venue at 1094 Steve Irwin Way and what an afternoon of riches was laid before us. The highlight for me came from artists new to us - No Ambition, with singer guitarist Adam Pinkowski and vocalists Joanne and Sheryl. They produced the sort of harmonies you literally die for - close, three part, tonally balanced and beautifully in tune.

Each of them took solos in a set that included an original, a James Taylor number or two and ‘The Wayfaring Stranger’ - a negro spiritual. They were then joined on stage by local girl Natalie Przychoszki in a vocally rich version of ‘Smile’.

Earlier we had enjoyed harmonica player Iain Scott and his daughter - vocalist Reve, in some raunchy blues tunes. They are also new to us and it leaves one pondering, where do all these wonderful musicians come from? Other performers on the day included Jonathon Currency (AKA Frank Moroney) Anthony Infant (AKA Doug Pullen), Catherine Belk, Mick Dawson, Mary Martin, Adrien Powell, Kaf and Paul Fagan. The ever reliable Rusty Strings – Gerry and Doug, with their foot-tapping, folky, bluegrass repertoire attained the sort of level we have come to expect from them and earned Gerry the 'Most Award' as a thank you for his performances for the Musos for this month. Rob Goodwin, who is a good supporter but one we rarely hear, finished off a great afternoon for us by belting out some Creedence and Eric Clapton numbers backed by Paul, Doug, Adrien and yours truly.

If you’ve read this far you’re probably a Musos enthusiast and might like to know that for our next Sports Club session on June 13, we’ll have a theme suggested by Jon Brown: time. That should challenge us all!

Happenings Out and About Local biggest morning teas The crew from Glasshouse Country First National Real Estate decided to organise a community Biggest Morning Tea event recently to raise funds for the Queensland Cancer Council. They held their event at the Beerwah Golf Club and provided everyone with some tasty treats and raised $771.55 with donations and raffles on the day.

The 10th annual Biggest Morning Tea held at Landsborough last week was almost a full house with over 120 people attending.

Community Legal Service support needed

The Suncoast Community Legal Service is looking for additional volunteers from the legal profession, particularly those who specialise in Family Law and advice, for outreach locations at Landsborough and Maleny.

Suncoast have seven outreach locations across the Coast and in order to keep providing the community with guidance they need support.

The service is a valued part of not only the Caloundra community but the Sunshine Coast as a whole. Recently they have had to limit the amount of advices they give due to staff cuts and a decrease in volunteers.

The Queensland Plan

Following the Mackay Summit on May 10, 2013, a series of thought provoking questions have been posed to get Queenslanders talking about their vision for the future.

It is now our opportunity as a community to work together and make sure that Caloundra is well represented in ‘The Queensland Plan.’

The Queensland Plan is a plan for Queenslanders, by Queenslanders. It is the first of its kind in scope and scale for our state, and will provide a 30 year vision for Queensland.

Over the coming weeks, I will be asking for community members to complete a survey as well as hosting two information sessions to ensure that we can all join the conversation on The Queensland Plan.

Two sessions will be held on Friday, June 28. The first at the CCSA Hall on Nutley Street at Caloundra from 9.00am – 10.30am and the second at the Beerwah Community Hall from 1.30pm – 3.00pm.

Queensland Government commits to NDIS

It will please many of you to know that on May 8, Premier Campbell Newman signed a joint agreement with the Prime Minister to include Queensland in DisabilityCare Australia - the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

In late 2012, the Queensland Government took the first steps towards securing our involvement in the NDIS when we committed an additional $868 million over the next five years towards disability services. This additional funding was on top of Queensland’s record investment of $959 million announced the in the 2012 - 2013 State Budget. This clearly demonstrated the Queensland Government’s commitment to helping people with a disability and those who care for them.

Now, with the signing of the joint agreement, when the NDIS comes into place, it will provide all eligible Queenslanders with access to a scheme that guarantees lifetime coverage for the costs of reasonable and necessary disability care and support. It will also give Queenslanders with a disability choice and control over their disability supports, including specialist, mainstream and community supports. We will be working with the non-government sector to do what we can to prepare the sector, and Queenslanders with a disability, for a transition to a fully operational NDIS from 1 July 2019.

Changes to Liquor and Gaming legislation

As part of our commitment to reducing red tape in Queensland, the Newman Government recently passed new laws to assist non-profit community groups wanting to hold a fundraising event for their community.

From July 1, if you wish to sell alcohol at your event, you may no longer have to apply for a community liquor permit.

Our new laws provide an exemption to those organisations if: • funds raised are being used to benefit the community; and • it is a one-off event starting and finishing on the same day; and • liquor is sold for up to eight hours on one day (between 7.00am and midnight); and • the sale of alcohol is secondary to the event.

Garden Expo to honour Colin Campbell

The countdown is on again to one of the country’s most impressive gardening events – the 29th Queensland Garden Expo, from July 5 - 7 at the Nambour Showgrounds.

The expo will again offer a jam-packed program including free lectures and demonstrations on a diverse range of gardening topics, as well as the wares of over 360 exhibitors and more than 55 nurseries selling over 40,000 plants per day.

Another highlight of the three-day event will be an auction of some of Colin Campbell’s garden tools, where the local gardening icon will be remembered after his sad passing last year.

Visitors will have the opportunity to bid on some of Colin’s favourite gardening items and proceeds from the auction will be passed on to a chosen gardening project which will be selected through a funding application process.

The speakers program includes many high profile gardening experts such as Costa Georgiadis of ABC Gardening Australia, ABC Radio Host Annette McFarlane, Garden Guru Phil Dudman, Brisbane Botanical Gardens Curator, Ross McKinnon, and Angus Stewart from Gardening Australia.

Grab a green bin and save They’re convenient, cost-effective and help keep the local environment clean and green. Sunshine Coast Council’s fortnightly green waste bin service is available to all local residences for only $75.00 per year.

Service Delivery Portfolio Councillor Ted Hungerford said having the green waste bin service offered a convenient alternative to taking green waste to the tip by trailer.

“Owning or hiring a trailer, loading it up with garden waste and taking it to the local tip is not a convenient option for many local residents so a green waste bin offers a very efficient and cost effective alternative,” he said.

“Residents can place grass cuttings; leaves; small branches; weeds and cut up palm fronds in a green waste bin and have it collected every fortnight from their home for $75.00 per year.”

Environment Portfolio Councillor Tony Wellington said the service also helped council to reduce waste that is sent to landfill and maintain best practice waste disposal methods.

“Placing green waste in a green waste bin rather than a regular household bin means the plant material is shredded, aged and turned into mulch,” he said.

“This mulch is then made available for use by both council and ratepayers.

“Thus the green waste is not adding to the organic load in the landfill and this in turn reduces the carbon tax costs from generated methane.

“Council’s waste transfer stations are all equipped with the capacity to recycle or re-use many items that are received from households and businesses.”

This interesting and rather lovely flowering native – previously known as Hakea gibbosa – is a plant of wallum woodlands but is quite happy growing in a variety of soil types. Hakea actites is a small to medium shrub with grey green prickly leaves.

Flowers are cream and rather small but usually quite prolific. The interesting tough and woody seed capsules, though quite large, only contain two seeds which require heat to release them. In nature this is usually fire, but a warm oven or strong sunlight can cause the capsules to open.

Glass House Mountains is home to another Hakea species, H. florulenta which is not prickly and has elliptical grey green leaves. Both species grow 1 to 3 metres.

Lunch box gardening

Often we think of growing vegetables to supply us with our greens for dinner, but what about our lunches? Every year I have always grown a variety of things that I can pack into my kid’s lunch boxes, and this year is no different. Except that I have my own lunches to pack for work also.

The benefits of growing your own lunch box snacks are obvious; freshness, health and convenience. The last point is particularly relevant for me, as I all too often put off the grocery shopping a little too long and have very little to pack for lunches. Growing my own healthy and tasty snacks is yet another way I can avoid having to do the grocery shopping a little longer.

One of my kid’s all-time favourites is the humble cherry tomato. Homegrown, vine-ripened cherry tomatoes just can’t be beat for sweetness and flavour. They make a terrific snack and a single plant will produce more than enough for a month’s supply for a child’s lunch box. Furthermore, the varieties of cherry tomatoes that are available provide a variation of colour, size and shape. I personally love the ‘Yellow Pear’, ‘Little Toms’ and ‘Thai Pink Egg’ varieties which are all prolific fruiters.

Winter time provides the best time to grow their second favourite lunch box snack … good old peas and snow peas. When these first come on, I must admit I am lucky to be able to get any to make it inside as my children tend to eat them straight out of the garden. My favourite variety to grow would have to be the ‘Sugar Snap’ pea, not just because as its name suggests, it’s sweet, but because both pod and peas taste delicious.

My kid’s third favourite lunch-box snack grown in the garden has to be carrots. I love to grow all sorts of carrots, including the standard type, rounded balls and the deep purple varieties. The key to making these great lunch box snacks is to ensure you water them well and pick them as baby carrots, which will guarantee they are a sweet, juicy treat.

Finally, for myself, I include all the above mixed in with fresh baby leafy greens. The mix I use consists of rocket, spinach, beetroot, lettuce and kale, to name a few, and the crunchy freshness combines perfectly with my cherry tomatoes, peas and carrots.

The hardest part to all this, is to actually get the time to pack my own lunch and not just the kids.

Make sure you think beyond dinner time vegetables and include some plantings for your lunch. I hope everyone is enjoying the glorious sunshine and the fresh winter mornings out in the garden. Until next month in Get up and Grow!

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church When you read the biographies of Jesus you can’t help but notice how often Jesus butts heads with the religious clergy of his day. As a matter of fact, Jesus seemed to make a sport of it.

Every time we read about these religious people they were doing their best to trap Jesus, but somehow Jesus wisely gets out of the trap and turns it back onto the leaders. It’s a bit like watching an old Road Runner cartoon where Wylie Coyote tries to trap the road runner only to end up the victim of his own trap.

It comes to a head as Jesus clears out the temple the week before his is crucified.

Jesus throws out the merchants and money changers of the day and makes the place suitable once more for people to go and pray and focus on their relationship with God. These money changers and merchants were run by the religious priesthood of Jesus’s day. If you like, these priests formed the religious mafia that controlled everything which went on in the temple.

The priests and religious leaders of Jesus’ day became very rich off their involvement in religion.

Excavations around Jerusalem have revealed palatial villas that were owned by the priestly families of Jesus’ day. Every villla had at least one room with a mosaic floor, baths as well as stone vessels and tables, all marks of affluence.

They have even discovered monogrammed personalised pottery with KTRS with is the name

of the kathros family - one of the priestly families.

There is a poem on record where the poet begs that the priests don’t pray for him- because God is not disposed kindly to their words. The poet doesn’t trust the priest’s signatures because they break their promises. The poet mentions how the priests would send servants around with clubs to extort money. When someone from the temple came around to your house asking for a donation they are making you an offer you cannot refuse.

How did Jesus react to these people?

His word to them is they will receive greater condemnation - why? Because they knew better.

I am sure you can draw many parallels to the situation we have been reading about over the last couple of weeks. As we do, we need to listen to the words of Jesus that those people who abuse their positions of trust and abuse their religious responsibility are doubly condemned?

Everyone is accountable to Jesus, especially people who claim to be on God’s side.

What we should do instead is understand that Jesus is not like those religious people who abuse their positions of trust and authority. Jesus said: ‘I came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

Jesus is not like the religious mafia for He is God himself come to love and serve humanity.

Those that do wrong in his name will not get away with it.

There were played 6 rinks of Triples and one of Fours. Prizes were drawn out of the hat as rain shortened playing time. The winners were Di Garland, Brian Fogarty and John McSwain.
