imagine that there will be plenty of local school aged girls keeping busy discussing what they will be wearing this Friday night and the boys might be getting in some practice for their smooth dance moves for the second Blue Light Disco to be held in Beerwah!

A few months ago the first disco was held at the Beerwah Hall (across from the library), this event was held just for primary kids as a trial run.

I was chatting to local Constable Kyron Wolfe who is based at Beerwah about the first event and he said that the kids who came along really enjoyed themselves and were very happy with the prizes which had been generously donated by local businesses.

He said the new Beerwah Blue Light Disco Association is really keen to make the second event, which is for all ages, and runs between 6.00pm and 9.30pm on December 7, a real success.

Cost on the night is $7.00 for entry (which includes raffle tickets) drinks, sausage sizzle and lollies will also be available for purchase on the night.

I reckon four Blue Light Discos a year should make plenty of kids happy, and will give parents a chance to head out for a meal and some adult time so that should keep them happy, so it looks like a winner all round.

Giving is what it is all about

In the true spirit of Christmas, Tania and Glen from Smileys Jewellers at the Beerwah Marketplace have come up with a great way to share with those in need.

Smileys have an absolutely gorgeous dress ring which has been created with a cushion cut Gilson pink sapphire and brilliant cut diamonds that they are offering as part of a lucky draw.

The ring is valued at $1,750.00 and will go to one generous local who choose to either make a gold coin donation or drop off a non-perishable item of food to Smileys Jewellers before 5.00pm on Friday, December 14.

All cash and food items collected will be given to the Salvation Army welfare appeal who Tania believes does a fantastic job in supporting those in our community who need that extra bit of assistance both at Christmas and throughout the year.

For those of us that can afford an extra item in our groceries, maybe a can of ham, or a bag of Christmas lollies, or a Christmas cake, it is reward enough knowing that we are sharing our Christmas spirit with someone less fortunate who will really appreciate it.

However I have to say I think that the lovely piece of jewellery on offer would also bring a little bit of extra joy to one of us local ladies and would be truly appreciated.

We are fortunate in our community to have many retail businesses that go above and beyond to assist other community groups, including those that are selling Lions Christmas Cakes, Rotary Calendars, or collecting books and gifts for donation to charitable organisations.

In a community like ours it is this type of generosity of spirit, which Tania and Glen have embraced, that reminds us why it is important to support the independently owned businesses making up our local business economy which make us a community, and not just a place to live.

Council’s draft planning strategy – out now for public comment – includes the following predictions for some of the key growth indicators for Mooloolah and surrounds.

The Mooloolah Local Plan Area map (ZM_61) shows some interesting changes from the last planning scheme – the 2004 Caloundra City Plan.

The two parcels of land previously applied for a material change of use so that a tavern could be established in the town (adjacent to the vet and produce store), has changed zoning from urban residential to now be part of the Local Centre Zone.

This zoning allows for shops, including food and drink outlets – but excluding a drive-through facility.

Comparing the 2004 Caloundra City Plan map for Landsborough with the corresponding one from the draft planning strategy, the urban footprint for Landsborough has shrunk slightly, with some urban areas being rezoned.

Building heights for Beerwah Glass House Mountains

Retaining the unique country character of Beerwah while planning for growth and development is a significant opportunity for Beerwah.

I have closely reviewed elements in the draft planning scheme related to zones, building heights and building density.

Beerwah has a spectacular backdrop to the Glasshouse Mountains and it’s essential that the new planning scheme provisions maximise these incredible views.

With regard to Beerwah, council has removed the traditional expectation that buildings are constructed as flat blocks with no shape or character.

New buildings will be built with set-backs so that the contour of new buildings will allow large areas of sky to still be visible.

You’ll be able to see between the buildings rather than be faced with a building structure that completely screens the natural backdrop.

It’s a really exciting proposal that includes building four storey’s high, making it financially feasible for developers, which in turn will help stimulate economic growth in the town.

The plan is for new buildings to retain awnings at street level providing for an active street interface.

The upper levels can be used as offices, residential apartments or professional services.

Beerwah is a major town activity centre that will be competing with developments in Caloundra South, Kawana and Sippy Downs, so it’s really important that we maintain our distinction in the region as a modern country town.

The quality of Beerwah’s open space is going to be its major competitive strength. Work undertaken in Beerwah will set the scene for high quality development and improvement that can eventually be rolled out in Landsborough and Glass House Mountains.

I’m very keen to get community feedback about designing a vibrant town centre for Beerwah and I hope to talk to as many locals as possible about their aspirations for the region.

National Park upgrade

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has announced an upgrade on a popular Glass House Mountains National Park walking track is now underway.

Mr Powell said work had begun on the $175,000 Mount Ngungun summit walking track major upgrade, designed to make the area safer for the thousands of visitors who enjoyed using it each year.

“This project will realign the track and provide new information signage and viewing points to give locals and visitors an even better experience in the Glass House Mountains National Park,” Mr Powell said.

“With the upgrade due to be completed by June 2013 weather permitting, every effort will be made to keep the track open during the works period, especially on weekends.

“However, for safety during high-risk construction, closures will be required from 7.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday up until 14 December 2012.”

Mr Powell said the Glass House Mountains including Mount Ngungun had special significance to local Aboriginal people, who were consulted as part of the project.

National Parks Minister Steve Dickson said the project was a great example of the Newman Government’s commitment to opening up the state’s National Parks for all Queensland residents and visitors to enjoy.

“Eco-tourism is a major part of our plan for growing the tourism pillar of Queensland’s economy, which is why we are working to increase certainty and opportunity for operators across our national park estate,” Mr Dickson said.

“Mt Ngungun’s 2.2km return summit walk provides spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and broader Sunshine Coast region.”

Local Landsborough author Anne Alloway has recently published ‘Tales from Bush Graves’ that she co-authored with a friend Roberta Morrison, a friend from her home town of Hughenden.

The book recounts the stories of 218 people who met their death in the Queensland bush, many dying of thirst, alone and lost.

The area featured in the book takes in the shire of Flinders, half way between Townsville on the coast and Mount Isa to the west.

Anne, a volunteer with the Landsborough Museum and member of the Caloundra Family History Group, explained that she and Roberta have been working on the project for eight years.

Anne said the response to the book has been really positive with the first print run selling out and a second print run being produced.

As it is 100 years since Hughenden’s early days of settlement, the pair decided to research this subject, as many of the grave sites on stations have been forgotten, and only a handful have head stones.

As Anne has been living in Landsborough for the last seven years, she was able to do the research required at the State Archives on the south side of Brisbane each month.

Anne said reading the inquest documentation and finding out the true story of what actually happened to the people was a really interesting exercise.

Walk raises much needed funds Glasshouse Community Carols won’t be a silent night

In September this year, Church on the Rise hosted Beerwah’s first ‘Walk to Water’ an event which involved 35 people walking a total of 245 km to raise funds to assist four villages in Northern Nigeria to have clean water.

According to local walk coordinator, Natalie Ukkola, the walkathon highlights the fact that people in disadvantaged countries can’t just turn on a tap, something many of us take for granted.

“In some of these villages, families, often mothers and children, are forced to walk long distances every day to collect water, and they are often mistreated along the way,” Natalie said.

“The funds raised from the walkathon will go towards building bores for those communities where water is not available.”

Our local effort in total this year raised $1,884.05 which Natalie said was an unbelievably great result from the first Walk in Beerwah.

“It shows that people do care and they are willing to help those in need.

“I would like to thank everyone who walked and everyone who helped or donated to such a fabulous cause,” Natalie said.

The Silver Bucket Award went to Rosie Ukkola for the most money raised approximately $350.00 and the Purple Plugger award went to Isaac Cornel for the furthest distance - he jogged 14 km in the two and a half hours.

Natalie hopes our community will participate again next year and looks forward to growing the support for this valuable initative.

Glasshouse Community Carols is being held at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday, December 15 with a great night of family fun and entertainment planned.

Event organiser, Rhonda Jobe from Church on the Rise said each year the event seems to get better.

"If we get great weather like last year, we can expect an excellent turn out once again," she said.

The evening kicks off at 5.00pm with lots of treats for the younger crowd including an animal farm, Croc truck from Australia Zoo, a story tent, a jumping castle and once again Peebo and Dagwood who are a real favourite with the kids.

Dinner has been taken care of, with hamburgers, chips, cold drinks, and coffee on sale on the night.

The carol program begins at 6.30pm and there are plenty of carols that you will know to sing along to and celebrate this special season.

The evening will finish with fireworks at the family friendly time of 8.00pm.

“This year the entertainment program will feature two talented and very different guest artists for the audience to enjoy,” Rhonda said.

“Christine Oksanen from Brisbane has been performing since she was a little girl and has sung in America and across the world, she will be accompanied by her son Timothy on keyboard.

“Also appearing on the night will be Cassie Hilbers our very own Beerwah youngster who is making waves in the music world with her YouTube videos; this talented 10-year-old writes and performs her own songs,” she said.

Council presents draft plans for Beerwah As a result of extensive community engagement for the Beerwah PLACE+ project earlier this year, council has presented draft plans for the Stage 1 and 2 focus areas, which include Simpson and Mawhinney Streets.

The design will create a more pedestrian friendly environment in the town.

Key aspects of the upgrade include: • new seating and outdoor dining areas with shade trees • raised pedestrian crossings to create a low speed environment • active open space and civic areas • a shared pedestrian and cycle pathway network with end of trip facilities • landscape design that reflects Beerwah’s mountain backdrop and history $3 million in capital funding has been allocated for Stage 1 and 2 construction over the next three years, scheduled to begin in the 2013/14 financial year.

Council is developing an overall masterplan for Beerwah, which is scheduled for completion June 2013.

Clarification A story ran in last week’s GCNews about solar power, stating that BYD solar panels supplied by 13004SOLAR can produce over 20 per cent more electricity than other systems. 13004SOLAR report that their installing electricians have measured their systems as delivering up to 24 per cent more output than they are rated to produce.

Community News Lions free raffle

CWA Beerwah

The Beerwah Lions Club recently ran a raffle with a difference! The raffle tickets were free.

Membership Chairman Bob Banner said the purpose of the free raffle was twofold.

On the one hand, it helped raise awareness of the Lions Organisation within the community, and on the other hand, it gave the Lions an opportunity to give something back to the community.

Winner of the prize, a $50.00 voucher from IGA Beerwah, was Mark Pettet of Peachester, seen receiving the voucher from Lion Bob Banner.

Computer courses have finished and new ones will commence in February or March. Del Davis Once again the Beerwah Branch CWA has presented a Year 10 student with an Encouragement Award at both Glasshouse Country Christian College and the Beerwah State High School. The branch continues the commitment to helping where needed as does all branches throughout QLD for the past 90 years.

The CWA room is available for small functions with a budget price rental. Although Beerwah Flowers and Gifts has moved, Sue through her generosity, continues to be the booking agent and has the keys to our room.

Congratulations to Sara Faddy, Maleny (Nambour North Coast Division President) who represented our area in CWA Fundraiser of the year.

She was awarded this honour with $9,830 raised from the Division.

Mirusia and her guest artist Gregory Moore (from Members of the local community choir the Ten Tenors fame) which was taken on stage.

Kindy kids graduate

A very special event was held at Landsborough Childcare Centre last week. The very first official Kindergarten class had a graduation ceremony that was attended by their friends and family.

The children performed a few favourite songs before donning their capes and gowns to individually accept their diplomas.

It was a very emotional event celebrating the children’s achievements this year as staff say goodbye to the little ones who will be heading off to ‘big school’ in 2013.

The children celebrated afterwards with ice blocks, a beautiful rainbow cake made by one of the children’s parents and of course a chocolate cake!

Kindy Teacher Jillian and Assistant Tina would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Kindergarten parents for their support, participation and positive feedback throughout the year.

Mooloolah Community Centre Christmas message It’s been a productive year for the Mooloolah Community Centre and recently the volunteers came together for a combined ‘Thank you and Christmas’ lunch at the Palmwoods hotel.

The festivities will continue as The Centre also looks forward to celebrating the year with everyone at the Annual Community Christmas party to be held on Friday, December 14 from 4.00pm until 8.00pm. Everyone is welcome at this free event, with live music, free jumping castle and barbecue and a special visit from Santa.

The Mooloolah Community Centre Office will be closing on December 17 and the Op Shop will be closing for the holidays on Wednesday, December 19 and re-opening on January 14.

From now until closing, every Op Shop customer will get a free raffle ticket towards a gift basket prize to be drawn on Wednesday, December 19.

The Mooloolah Community Centre would like to thank all of its supporters throughout the year.

Travelling Tales

with John and Margaret Rouhan Margaret Rouhan of Beerwah recently sent GCNews some great photos of husband John reading a copy of the paper in some very glamorous locations and shared some of the stories of their travels with us.

Where did you travel to and how long were you away for?

We were away for just under three months and spent most of our time with our daughter Kylie in Switzerland. But we did travel to Scotland, Italy and Russia during the trip as well.

We arrived in Switzerland in time for the Swiss National Day on August 1 and had a wonderful barbeque on the balcony and watched all the fireworks over Lake Lucerne.

We had pre-purchased a rail pass so we travelled all over the country visiting new places and revisiting familiar scenes as well. Switzerland really is a picture post card country with views at every turn.

What were the highlights of the holiday?

Kylie and her husband have bought a house in northern Italy that is in need of fairly major maintenance, so we went down there for two weeks with them to find out what was required. I am not sure who got the better end of the deal, free accommodation in return for free labour!

We did work hard there but it was hard not to enjoy it when you look out over the valley to the vineyards and quaint little villages.

The Ferrer Roche hazelnut farm is their next door neighbour and we feasted on fresh hazelnuts the whole time.

In Scotland we visited the Falkirk Wheel which is the most amazing piece of engineering I think I have seen and John enjoyed trying the many different local ales.

Regular travelling tales contributor Brian Aitken of Beerwah must be the most well travelled local we know, he loves keeping our office up-to-date with his travels, he sends us post cards and often brings us back cute souvenirs of his journeys.

On one of his recent trips he spent just under a month away, which included 10 days in Japan arriving at Tokyo and leaving from Osaka. He followed this up with time in Taiwan and then six days in Hong Kong.

Brian’s favorite part of the trip was Japan and he has shared these great photos of his holiday with us.

No doubt early in the New Year we will be hearing more about Brian’s next exciting journey.

We came home via a river cruise from St Petersburg to Moscow. It was meant to be relaxing but there was so much on that there was little time to just relax.

Unfortunately, it was too cold to be sitting out on the open decks although we did rug up and go out to watch the cruise ship passing through some of the locks. There were many highlights in Russia but the most amazing thing I think was the eight lane road going through to the centre of Moscow. That is eight lanes in one direction!! And it was gridlocked!!

What were the greatest challenges you faced?

While in Italy I was allocated to drive to the nearest village for supplies about 20 minutes away. Driving a new car, on new roads, with crazy Italian drivers and driving on the wrong side of the road. I am proud to say that I did not add one more scratch to the car.

Our two weeks in Scotland were greeted with the obligatory Scottish mist, and a wee bit heavier.

However, it did not stop us doing some hill climbing and long walks in the countryside.

Packing was a bit of a challenge given that we would be going from a Swiss summer (up to 36 degrees) to a Russian autumn (2 degrees with wind chill as well). For the first time in all our travels we both used up all the 20kgs luggage allowance!

Where to from here?

Unfortunately, we did bring home a good dose of the Russian flu with us but we are both recovered now and looking forward to our next adventure when we again provide free labour in exchange for accommodation in Italy.

School News Mooloolah State School is on the map!

On Sunday, November 4, Mooloolah Valley reverberated with an unmistakeable long, slow rumble as more than 100 Harley Davidson riders cruised into the village to enjoy a cuppa!

The Brisbane Harley Owners Group, known as the Brisbane HOGs, rode through the township and on to Mooloolah State School, where they parked their beautiful machines on the basketball court and headed into the school hall for light refreshments.

The Mooloolah State School P&C organised the visit as a fundraising event, and P&C and community volunteers worked tirelessly for hours to provide a fantastic selection of sandwiches, fruit and fresh baked goodies to tempt and refresh the riders.

The riders ate well, shared interesting conversations, and generously supported raffles that were run on the day. They also enjoyed all the interest and admiration their valuable bikes attracted!

A HOGs spokesperson said they thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful setting and morning tea, and are planning to put Mooloolah State School on their monthly circuit calendar and return again next year!

The Mooloolah P&C extends a massive thank-you to everyone who helped make the event such a great success.

School News The bossy Christmas fairy

Not many people think of Christmas fairies as bossy but the star of Glasshouse Country Christian College’s Prep to Year 2 concert left no doubt in anyone’s mind. Mia Andreassen from Year 2 played the part beautifully and spent the night relegating substandard Christmas tree decorations (impersonated by children) to the reject box.

Some children dressed as fairy lights with white gowns and flashing necklaces, come classes were Christmas baubles with giant sparkling balls hanging off their shirts, others were snowflakes dressed in white with silver hats and tinsel. One class dressed as chocolate Santas and another dressed as tinsel with brightly coloured gowns and glitter everywhere. Then there was a small group of children dressed as the nativity scene.

Finally, the nativity made its way onto the stage, but the bossy fairy threw the whole lot into the reject box because they were too shabby.

The story ends with two children waking up to find the tree incomplete. They discover their favourite decorations in the reject box and restore them to their rightful place on the Christmas tree.

The children are horrified to discover the symbol of the true meaning of Christmas has also been rejected and move the nativity scene to take pride of place on the stage. The bossy fairy has a change of heart when she sees the true meaning of Christmas and everyone lives happily ever after.

Many of the students at Beerburrum State School invited their grandparents along to the school’s first ever Grandparents Day. This gave the students a chance, along with the school community, to thank grandparents for their love and support.

Students were able to take their grandparents into their classroom and show them what they have been learning about.

They also had a wander through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden and then shared in some refreshments.

Many grandparents commented on what a beautiful learning environment the students have and what great opportunities the school offers its students, particularly the schools new veggie garden and school kitchen program.

ATO urges caution over SMSF property investment with Ross Wolstencroft There has been much debate around how some Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSFs) are investing in property, and using Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangements (LRBAs) to help fund the purchase.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is the latest to express concern over trustees of SMSFs who don't understand their obligations under the law.

Ross Wolstencroft, Director of Arrow Financial Planning Services, weighs up the benefits and risks.

'The finer details are important and trustees need to be sure that property is the right investment for their SMSF and that the arrangement is legal,' the ATO said in a recently released statement.

A limited recourse borrowing arrangement usually involves a SMSF taking out a loan, and then using the loan, together with its own available funds, to purchase a single asset (normally a residential or commercial property) that is then held in a separate trust.

There are four key benefits in doing so: • Leveraging your superannuation savings • Tax concessions • Asset protection • Estate Planning But trustees must also be aware of the risks: • Restrictions on assets: What types of assets can be purchased?

• Property alterations and improvements: Can assets be replaced with a different asset?

How can assets be altered or improved?

• Cost: Additional costs in utilising an LRBA? • Liquidity: Will the rent cover all loan repayments?

• Contracts and loan documentation: If structured incorrectly, the property may have to be sold.

Any losses to the fund?

• Governing rules: Is the type of investment, or even using a LRBA, consistent with the investment strategy of the fund?

• Tax losses: Any tax losses remain in the fund and cannot be used to offset your personal taxable income.

Sometime during the last week, someone has taken an axe to numerous trees growing along both sides of the Peachester Range Road. For a number of years, one tree had been decorated with Christmas baubles which gave an interesting and quaint aspect to the entrance of our lovely township of Peachester. Trees have previously been cut down on the uphill (left) side and one can only assume it’s been carried out to allow people an uninterrupted view across to the Glass House Mountains. I sincerely hope relevant authorities will check out this destructive and devastating action to see if any breaches have been made.

Battery recycling

With reference to the letter from A Hughes a few weeks ago, regarding recycling of batteries at Aldi Beerwah. Our local businesses Swan street mechanics and tyre shop have been collecting and disposing of batteries for years - as I feel sure other local businesses are doing too. Batteries can also be dropped at Beerwah recycle centre and/or possibly any petrol station.

It is great that Aldi now has a bin which is central but nonetheless many local businesses have been doing this service before Aldi came.

Bath time at the Morgan’s

The Morgan’s, Pauline and Curly (or Barry), from Pike’s Road Glass House Mountains had a surprise visitor last week, when a one metre long goanna decided to try out their bath.

Pauline was sitting on the lounge when she heard scratching noises in the bathroom.

Peering around the door, she came face to face with the lizard in the bath.

Judging by the towel in the bath, it seems like it may have just finished when interrupted by Pauline.

We have just had a scary couple of days when our son Joshua was rushed to Nambour Hospital and then to ICU at the Royal Brisbane Children's Hospital.

We just wanted to say thank you to all those who helped and for your love, prayers and support. He has made a speedy recovery.

But with the goanna subdued in Curly’s firm grasp, it was soon released amongst their macadamia trees, where it was last seen scurrying off, a little exhausted, but possibly much cleaner.

Micheal lives at Glass House Mountains and is a professional musician, composer and recording studio owner A friend dropped around the other week to tell me she had just seen a documentary about the singer songwriter Rodriguez. Apparently it is a fascinating account of how he had achieved huge success in South Africa over his lifetime but hadn’t been aware of it. I haven’t yet seen the movie but this report was enough to prompt me into going on line to rediscover some of the Rodriguez songs that I had once known in the late 70s.

With the wonders of modern technology, within half an hour I had watched Rodriguez perform both of these songs on YouTube and downloaded the lyrics and chords and was happily once more singing them.

You often hear that technology is making us all lazy, and there is some truth in that, but there are good grounds for questioning the theory.

Technology opens doors for us that we couldn’t have conceived of only a few years ago. In the past I simply wouldn’t have been able to relive these songs in such a short amount of time. It would have taken much longer and been a lot more work and cost, and I probably wouldn’t have got around to it.

Of course one could argue that the riches provided by that sort of technology were in place long before computers appeared on the scene.

With cassettes and friends’ music collections for example I could have done much the same sort of thing. It has never really been that hard to find music and learn songs. Maybe what is different today is that we aren’t sharing the experience as much. We are having our own life in music at home with our ears ‘buried’ in our computer. If we aren’t lamenting the loss of live music in our lives, then we should be!

So next time you are sitting at home and thinking you feel like singing a song or two, why not get a little adventurous, go online, download the lyrics and perhaps the chords of a song you like, but just remember that playing music by yourself is not as good as sharing it with others. So extend your joy and play or sing some of those songs with or for friends.

Music is a wonderfully social art, let’s keep it alive!

The Glasshouse Mountains Musicians Club It was another satisfying night of music on November 22. We had one newcomer - welcoming 15-year-old Louise Mudyard to our happy band.

She joined her brother Jay Jay on stage, who at age nine is steaming ahead as a performing artist, displaying an impressive competence as a guitarist and singer. He sang the Jason Mraz number ‘I’m Yours’ with Louise, backed

by Jon Brown and Tony Vobr. Jon gave us a set of Australian songs, as did Peter Gawith who wanted us to appreciate the songs that moved him as a kid in the 60s. Peter began with the Frank Ifield hit ‘I Remember You’ and included a great solo version of the Gerry Humphrey’s classic ‘The Loved One’ in his set. Frank Moroney began his set with Boxcar Willy’s ‘Aint Gonna Be Your Day’, assuring us that by singing this song he hoped the bad week he had had was behind him.

Mick Od performed for us accompanied by Paul and Doug and recognised Oz Music month by including a Slim Dusty song in his set, as he said, challenging himself by performing other people’s music. Doug Pullen’s set on his proudly worn new 12 string was as always varied and full of surprises. These included Doug’s comical version of ‘Blue Bayou’ and Michael Dawson joining him on stage with the harmonica part for the old Spectrum song ‘I’ll Be Gone’. Gavin Davidson played harmonica for Paul Fagan in a version of Neil Young’s ‘Sugar Mountain’ and it was a special pleasure for me to share the stage with Paul playing a set of Australian songs including John Farnham’s ‘A Touch of Paradise’ where Jon Brown joined us to sing harmonies.

As all singers know, having someone adding a middle part to your harmonies is one of life’s little joys. Thank you Jon! One of the night’s strongest sets saw Mick Bochow on guitar and vocal with Brett Hall on bass and Jon Brown on keyboard, along with a backing track.

Not surprisingly it was a full sound topped off my Mick’s impressive guitar solos.

Don’t miss local music festival The Apsara Music Festival to be held at the Maleny Botanic Gardens on Sunday, December 9 is described as a true celebration of eclectic arts, vibrant culture and the best live music in Australia.

Fast family reunion - As you read this I’ll be on leave for a family reunion catching up with my sister, parents and daughter who is studying overseas.

It will be a quick two week trip in between council Ordinary Meetings and I’ll be back on deck before you know it.

Council meetings - An important part of being your elected divisional representative is attending council Ordinary Meetings approximately every three weeks. My personal commitment is to make sure I attend every meeting possible as it is the mechanism council uses for debate and decision making. So much of the work that goes on in council is the pre-cursor to these meetings. For instance, major strategic initiatives translate into actions because of the decisions made at Ordinary Meetings.

Resources are allocated, policy is debated and council services are reviewed. A Council of our size has moved far beyond the traditional rates, roads and rubbish mantra and you might be surprised to learn that council provides over 180 services in the region. Council meetings are open to the public and I would encourage you to come along to see how your Local Government is working for you, check council’s website for details.

Free buses are back for summer holidays - Hop on a bus between December 26 and January 6 for free thanks to Council and Translink.

All Coast public transport will be free including TransLink’s Sunshine Coast Sunbus services, Glasshouse Country Coaches services, Flexilink services and Council Cabs.

Place+ Beerwah - Have you seen the exciting plans for Simpson and Mahwinney Streets in Beerwah? The new vision for Beerwah is on display at Councils website – look for Place + Beerwah in the, 'Have your say' section.

Social inclusion - Council was recently honoured as an inclusive champion with four awards at the Spinal Injuries Association’s annual Inclusive Community Awards. It’s fantastic to be acknowledged for our contribution to the development of a compassionate and inclusive community.

Christmas celebrations - The festive season has officially begun and Landsborough can expect to see Christmas banners installed, bringing a festive feeling to the town. Glass House and Landsborough will also have new custom decorations and the regular festive lighting adding to our special Christmas cheer.

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Mooloolah Valley morning meetings will start again on January 24 in the New Year. At the last meeting for 2012 we talked about the need for pedestrian access from the park to the railway crossover. As this is predominantly a Main Roads matter I will be writing to the office of Mark McArdle to see what can be done. Council has ensured that the Mooloolah Pool will be open all through summer and we will continue to provide a great service for the local community. The safety of Neil Road in Mooloolah was also talked about and as a result we will be requesting a reduction in speed and other safety measures at the joint State and Local Government Advisory Committee. We had great discussions with the Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce about RV friendly opportunities and the 150 year celebration of Mooloolah next year. There’s so much passion and enthusiasm at these meetings and it’s an invaluable opportunity to talk openly about matters important to the local area. There’s so many people hard at work in the best interest of our beautiful hinterland and I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you for your support and input throughout the year.

The highlight of Social Inclusion Week celebrations last week was the expo dedicated to providing information about the wide range of services on offer on the Coast for people with disabilities, seniors, families and carers.

There was inspiring speakers on topics such as parenting, bullying and social awareness. I met some really amazing people from the community and from organisations like Family Relationships Centre, Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. It was an invaluable educational opportunity aimed at building awareness of social inclusion issues into the broad community – keep an eye out for it next year.

Compost debate!

What a year it has been! Summer holidays for our family are often a productive time to get loads of work done around the home and garden, and this year’s holiday is looking to be very busy indeed!

The bonus with this is that we are guaranteed a day of rest to celebrate Christmas day … and you never know, I could get my dream garden completed as a Christmas gift. (Small hint to my hubby!)

This last month I’ve been going through the compost debate … cool heap, hot heap, buried heap, or worms?

There is a range of ways to create some great compost out there, but which is best?

Firstly, why should we compost? Environmentally speaking, it is obviously a great way of recycling waste, but the exciting bit for gardeners is what it provides to your garden. Added to the soil, compost enhances soil structure increasing its ability to store macro-nutrients, it also buffers pH fluctuations and provides vital micronutrients and finally, compost hosts a massive population of beneficial bacteria, fungi and macro/micro-organisms.

Compost heaps are literally teeming piles of life and energy.

So to the debate: which is the best way to compost?

This depends entirely on each individual’s circumstances when considering your time requirements, labour needs, scrap availability and space. So I figured a brief outline of each may be of assistance.

Considering the benefits of compost and my passion for healthy soil, I have decided not to choose; instead I plan to incorporate a bit of everything. I hope to have a cool compost I can add to as I go, some buried compost areas in future fruit tree locations, a hot compost bin for a quick supply of compost and finally a worm farm to join our pet family.

Luckily, living in the Glasshouse region we have a great source of materials around. It just takes a quick drive around to find horse, cow and chook manure at front gates, and mushroom compost and mulch direct from farms.

Adding this to my holiday list, I shall be very busy whizzing around with my trailer and plenty of gold coins! I just love supporting our locals!

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Wattles or Acacias Acacias, or wattles as they are usually known are one of the most common Australian plant species. A large range of Acacia species can be found in the Glasshouse Mountains, some suitable for large revegetation projects, but many smaller ones suitable for home gardens.

Despite being our national flower, the value of wattles far exceeds their reputation as a tree that ‘does not live long’ or ‘will fall over’. I am often told by residents that they won’t grow wattles because they are allergic to the pollen.

However there are many plants producing pollens which could be responsible, carried on the wind over long distances.

Wattles are one of the most suitable species for revegetation projects as they grow fast providing shade for more sensitive plants, and being a legume they return nitrogen to the soil. They can be pruned and the pruning’s used as nitrogen rich mulch.

Sugar and squirrel gliders, two of our most lovable marsupials, rely on the sap of wattles, as well as nectar and insects, as a food source. If wattles are cleared, gliders have been known to leave an area.

A large number of butterflies and moths also rely on acacia exudate as a food source. Bees and other insects are attracted to pollen in droves while the seed pods are sought after by various parrots.

Even the bush tucker industry uses wattle seed in various baked goods, and ice-cream.

Even in the final years of life, as the wood breaks down, these trees are utilised by various larvae, crickets and other insects, which in turn are sought by large cockatoos and insectivorous wildlife.

To be fair to our wattles, be conscious of where you plant large trees so you can be sure they won’t finish up on your roof!

Koala Wildlife Rescue

Our koalas are in a critical state and we are dedicated to making sure they survive. We are a non profit organisation that operates 24 hours a day seven days a week. We rescue sick, orphaned or displaced koalas in all areas. Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Community Church Well we’re getting to the pointy end of the year now where everyone has their Christmas breakups and family dinners and there seems to be an event every few days to add to our calendar for the month. It’s a great time where people come together in a way that doesn’t happen as often during the rest of the year to share gifts and some great food and drink as well.

This is something that Jesus seemed to be an expert in. Apart from the times where he did miraculous healings and walked on water, some of the greatest teaching he shared was amidst a party or a meal shared in a home. In Luke 14, Jesus noticed how the guests of the party struggled to sit in the places of honour at the dinner table. Seizing the moment, he explained to those present, that life needs to be more about others and less about you.

When you host a party, invite those that will never be able to repay you, rather than only

inviting those who will help you increase your social status. I think that God has given Australia a great gift in the Aussie barbecue. What a perfect opportunity to share with one another the love of Christ to those who may not have as much and build relationships and friendships with our neighbours. Jesus’ first miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding party, enhancing the event and serving those around him. May this year’s Christmas season bring you much joy, celebration and relational connection as we remember God’s generosity in giving his Son for us. Merry Christmas. Brendan

Contributed by Jenny Morris Our Xmas break-up was a great success on Sunday, November 25. The juniors enjoyed the games they played as well as water bombing their coach.

The Juniors playing in the Saturday morning competition have only one week left before they break up for Xmas. Their first game in 2013 is February 2.

Our Thursday night social tennis will continue through to Xmas with a short break and start again after the New Year.

Our AGM saw every position filled with Piet returning as President, Candace as Treasurer, Matt as Vice-President and Nick taking on Secretary and Publicity. Thanks Nick for putting up your hand to fill these positions for 2013.

Ray is continuing into another year as our resident coach.

At our Xmas break-up we also celebrated Ray’s 70th birthday. He has just finished 12 years as the Club’s coach. Thanks Ray for your efforts over the years with the juniors and the club projects.

I wish everyone a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. Thanks to those who helped me with the publicity of the club over the years of my involvement with the tennis club. I wish the Committee and Nick our new Publicity Officer success in the coming year.

Beerwah Ladies Golf

Contributed by Jenny Kelly The support which we receive in the form of sponsorship is crucial to the financial viability of our club. We are very grateful to our Secretary Manager Janette Fry as well as member Leith Barnes for their support of our Thursday competition. We had a good field of 68 players competing in a 4BBB Stableford which was well won by Teresa Keast and Julie McMahon with a total of 37 points. Runners up were Brenda Jones and Barb Saunders on 36 points, on a count back from Andrea Campbell and Cathy Stone.

NTPs went to Mavis Brimelow and Roselie Green on the 2nd, Jen Kelly and Lea Garner on the 5th, with Vanessa Alland and Susan Woolway taking out both the 16th and the 18th. The ball rundown went to 35 points.

Only one week more of Thursday competition for the ladies this year. The girls can still have a game on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and I'll try to bring you those results in the future. We are having our end of year Christmas Party next week, so until then, stay safe and good golfing.

Wednesday, November 28 - Ladies Bowls Day. Started the day with Spiders, and scratchies for ‘touches’ in a short game of bowls. Then broke for a Christmas lunch and end of year party.

Invited guests included Ruth Ellery, Eileen Young, Dina Van Der Mere and Jim Osbourne. A fun day

had by all. All enjoyed a lovely meal provided by Club Glass House.

NB: Ladies please note that bowls will still be on for the next three Wednesdays until the green is taken out on December 24 for annual maintenance.
