Hi Everyone

W

ell, as you go through the paper this week you may be surprised that we already have the listings for what is happening on Anzac Day. But with the timing of Easter this year, and as we don’t have an edition on the Wednesday before Anzac Day, we thought we would get in early.

All of the regular Anzac Day services and marches are pretty much the same as usual, but just in case you haven’t been along to one of the local events before you can check out all of the details.

The only major change is that the Dawn Service held at Glass House for the first time last year is going to be held a little later this year at 6.00am and, straight after, there is an awesome ‘Gunfire’ breakfast at Club Glass House.

It's the same dedicated team that organises the Dawn Service at Landsborough that then heads straight down to Glass House, so this will just give them a bit of time to transition to the second service.

Also I reckon I know a few families with young children who try each year to make it to Landsborough for 4.15am, who will find it a lot easier to get the whole family up and out in time for the 6.00am service.

As usual, Brownie and I will be doing a whirlwind tour of as many services and marches as we can to take photos. However, if you take a great photo that you would like us to include in our coverage, feel free to email it through to me at editorial@gcnews.com.au.

Local News CommBank staff clown around Friday, April 7 is the official fundraising day for the Clown Doctors, a program of the not-forprofit organisation, The Humour Foundation.

Each year the Clown Doctors visit around 240,000 sick kids and their families at 24 major hospitals around the country, bringing laughter and joy by parodying the hospital routine.

For more than 18 years the Clown Doctors program has been supported

by CommBank staff and last Friday the team at the Beerwah Branch put on their ‘happy faces’ and their big red noses for the camera to show their support.

No doubt some of the bank’s customers were a little surprised when they walked in to the bank the day The Clown after the community had experienced the after effects of ex tropical cyclone Debbie and found their bank staff clowning around.

Launched in Caloundra by Mayor Mark Jamieson and Transport Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski, the comprehensive draft Parking Management Plan is an important part of council’s commitment to long-term planning for the Sunshine Coast.

“The smart parking plan applies common sense solutions and harnesses existing and new technology as a means to manage greater demand for car parking as our region continues to grow at a rate higher than other Queensland regions,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“In tackling congestion, there really are only two levers available – better, more extensive and integrated public transport solutions and how we manage car parking demand.

“The public transport solution rests with the State Government – while council has the authority to manage car parking demand.

“Council continues to maintain a vigorous advocacy approach with the State Government and looks at opportunities for private investment with a view to securing an effective, integrated public transport solution for the region.

“Our draft Parking Management Plan identifies the need to prioritise investment in public transport infrastructure – which is a State Government responsibility – balanced with the needs of the road network, which includes minimising congestion.

“Through sound planning, our council

consistently aims to maintain our lifestyle advantages and the distinctive character of the communities that make up our region.

“The draft Parking Management Plan will help us proactively manage parking while recognising the existing and future demands of residents, business and visitors.

“In short, this draft plan will help to shape a region – and a future – that is healthy, smart and creative.”

Transport Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the draft Parking Management Plan and its associated draft Local Area Parking Plans for 37 areas across the Coast built on council’s current approaches to managing parking.

Key outcomes for local towns: Glass House, Mooloolah, Mapleton – no changes Beerwah Short-term (1-5 years): • Create a parking map for Beerwah • Advocate for an expansion to the Beerwah Parade Station park and ride car park • Construct an improved pedestrian link between the Beerwah Library and Community Hall through to Turner Street Medium term (5+ years): • Introduce 2P, time-limited on-street parking along Simpson Street • Introduce use-restricted bays based on demonstrated need • Park and ride capacity is increased Landsborough Short term (1-5 years): • Advocate for immediate provision of stage 1 of the new park and ride facility and bus set down to be established on the east of the rail station

• Formalise the unsealed parking area in Russell Family Park, to increase supply • Expand the Russell Family Park car park in accordance with the master plan, and provide a new access point from Western Avenue “The draft plans aim to provide a sensible pathway forward to achieve fair and equitable access to parking for all, without creating a costly oversupply,” Cr Baberowski said.

“We know the increased traffic is coming so it’s important that we have a clear plan.

“Achieving the right balance between the demand for, and supply of, parking will be crucial to finalising the documents.

“We are actively listening to community feedback about current parking management issues and opportunities and public input will be vital in determining the preferred outcomes.

“Paid parking, which is a user pays system, will only be considered in exceptional cases where demand for car parks is consistently high in areas such as larger urban centres, and where its effects will increase turnover of parking spaces.

“Council will look at other strategies before implementing paid parking.

"Consultation is very important because we want to create a consistent approach to parking across the region to proactively manage the needs, risks and pressures on a day-to-day basis.

“We want our residents involved in that discussion.”

Community feedback will close on Friday, May 5, 2017. Feedback received during the community consultation period will inform the final Sunshine Coast Council Parking Management Plan, which will then be presented to council for consideration.

Another celebrity on board Sunrise presenter David Koch has agreed to appear in the 2018 Vintage Calendar Girls project, which Maleny local Misty Bland is undertaking for the third time.

The risqué calendar features 12 Sunshine Coast women of all shapes and sizes and celebrates their beauty, along with a number of celebrities, while raising money for a good cause.

Ms Bland cheekily suggested ‘Kochie’ might like to appear in the calendar, to which he readily agreed.

This year, Mr Koch is lined up to take on the persona of Humphrey Bogart in Ms Bland’s third annual calendar, which pays tribute to style icons of the 1940s and '50s. “[Bogart is] The classiest actor from the Golden Years of Hollywood. I've always loved him, so if I can channel him for a few minutes that will be worth it,” Mr Koch said.

Despite having cameras rolling on him every morning as Channel 7's Sunrise co-anchor, Mr Koch said he had never been involved in a stylized calendar photoshoot before.

“It has been a lifelong dream to add to my resume,” he said.

“I am most looking forward to channelling my inner Zoolander – I've been practicing my blue steel look.”

Maleny Rotary Club sharing the love The Maleny Rotary Club held their annual Community Grants presentation at a special dinner held at Maleny with representatives from each of the successful community organisations attending.

On the night there were 15 local community groups who received a combined total of just over $10,000.

The grant recipients each had to submit an application and outline how the funds would be allocated and a selection committee of Rotary members made the decisions on which of the worthwhile proposals that they would assist from the local community.

Some of the successful groups were: Blackall Range Woodworkers for funds to upgrade sharpening equipment by replacing old grinding wheels with new and safer wheels, rests and jigs.

Celebration of Books to assist with cost of a special guest presenter for the 2017 festival and with the cost of recording key events, which will be held in Maleny from July 14-16.

Eventing Maleny, a new local group, received funding to support the purchase of a portable cross-country jump.

The Maleny Guides, who are currently undertaking a huge renewal project of their Guide Hut, received funds to assist in removing asbestos, reroofing and recladding, a new kitchen and a disability toilet.

The Maleny Community Gym received funds to help purchase a new treadmill.

A grant also went to the Maleny Netball Club to assist in the purchase of a gazebo to upgrade equipment and help with costs associated with coach and umpire training.

The Maleny Pony Club received funds to purchase new stop-watches and a range of witches-hats, while the Maleny Equestrian Group will be using their funds for a new belting rubber and paint to keep the arena at the showground safe for riders.

Maleny SES will allocate their funds for training equipment and a blu-ray player with GPS for in vehicle.

TS Centaur want to improve the building and surrounds by providing a concrete pathway at the east and west ends, so their grant will be go to that project.

Plenty of green waste Thousands of residents used the free storm damage green waste disposal service at Sunshine Coast Council Resource Recovery Centres over the weekend to help clean up their properties following last week’s severe weather.

Sunday’s figures at council’s Resource Recovery Centres included 976 storm damage green waste customers at Buderim as part of an overall total of 1,311 transactions, equivalent to one customer every 27.5 seconds for 10 hours.

There were 615 storm damage green waste loads accepted at Caloundra and another 543 at Nambour.

Beerwah, Witta, Mapleton and Kenilworth facilities totalled almost 500 green waste deliveries on Sunday.

“Our three main facilities were at capacity and we thank everyone who used the service for the patience they showed,” Local Disaster Management Group co-ordinator Andrew Ryan said.

Foot injuries more common than you think If your feet are unhappy, you are most likely to feel unhappy too…

An injured foot needs time to rest, however the job of the foot means they do not get to take the day off for rest! Every step you take on an injured foot can lead to other compensating injuries – even in the knee, hip and lower back.

Lack of cushioning: This is one reason for foot pain, where your feet lose the natural fat pad surrounding your bones. This can be due to age, walking on hard surfaces, or poor foot alignment. A shoe with a thick layer of cushioning helps in most cases,

however when this does not work a cushioned innersole may be required for additional support.

Lack of support: Wearing shoes where the soles or uppers have worn down, wearing shoes with no support in the heel counter (back of shoe), or very flat shoes which lack of arch support … these are all causes of foot pain. Spending some money of a decent pair of shoes that you wear almost every day can be the simple solution to foot pain. Always consult your Podiatrist first if unsure whether a shoe is the right one for your foot type, or is supportive / cushioned enough for your foot … so you don’t waste money on the wrong shoe.

Foot injury: Fractures of the foot are more common than you think! 'Robin the Hood' Theatre Restaurant 2016 saw Beerwah High have such success with our entertaining musical, 'Popstars' (we took out Platinum and the Overall Best Performance Award at the Sunshine Coast Schools’ Drama Festival) that we decided to do another show this year.

Rehearsals have been in full swing for most of this term with just over forty talented students learning lines, practising moves and trying on tights and corsets! And that’s just the boys!

Yes, this year’s musical is ‘Robin the Hood’, a show set in medieval times. Well, sometimes it is, but strangely Batman and Robin, a bunch of

hippies and a ladies bowling team crash the stage!

There are some great songs: Twisted Sister’s ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’, Elvis’ ‘Blue Suede Shoes’, Alice Cooper’s ‘Poison’ and of course, ‘Men In Tights’ from the movie of the same name. There’s something for everybody!

This year, the show takes the form of a theatre restaurant. Seats will be around tables where a three course meal will be served. So set aside Wednesday, May 31 or Thursday, June 1 for a rollicking good time with lots of laughs and just a little audience participation! Floods unite neighbours

By Natasha Odgers Hinterland Community Development Worker The floods may have brought damage, loss and despair to many, yet on the bright side of these times, new and revitalised connections among neighbours have been on the rise.

This flood has triggered people to talk more and help each other in the streets, which can help create more resilient neighbourhoods.

As flood levels rose, so did the level of cooperation among many neighbours across our part of the Coast.

Neighbourhoods in the hinterland are often subject to water over roads and creeks rising near houses. People have been looking out for one another, helping to clean others’ yards, sharing power and talking more.

Having strong social ties in our neighbourhoods and wider communities is key to how well we cope and cooperate in times of vulnerability in the face of floods and other natural disasters. Strengthening these local ties over months and years is particularly important for communication and coordinated efforts to happen before, during and after these events.

Part of the Diamond Valley neighbourhood, near Mooloolah, is one area where strengthened neighbourly connections has benefited people during the flood.

Some social and practical ways they have connected and supported each other during floods over the years include: • Regular socialising in their common places like roadsides and front yards • Casual discussions about how each other is preparing for the flood, which encourages people to revise their household emergency supplies and plans • A Facebook page, which was well used during the flood time for updates on road closures, power outages and offers of help, charging phones, showers, freezer space and so on.

There were also recommendations given ahead of time from neighbours who are weather followers, to be prepared for likely flooding.

• Many people have each others' phone numbers for contact as needed • People visiting each other to see how each other fared and help with clean-ups • Discussion about options for a bulk-buy of generators in preparation for the next flood time • Post-flood neighbourhood creek clean-up • Post-flood recovery party (sharing experiences and strengthening neighbourly friendships can help people recover and build resilience to natural disasters) The most important part of neighbourhoods cooperating is connection in the first place. Being receptive to beauty in music

Are we truly receptive to the innate beauty of music? Some of us might not be sure, others may tentatively say yes, others might answer that they usually are if they know and love the artist or the style of music. I’d like to propose that we can appreciate exquisiteness in all music regardless of style or artist, if we give ourselves to it. We don’t need to know or understand the music to recognize the beauty inherent in it. We just need to open our heart to it and it will begin to reveal itself.

Let me change tack here. Cast your mind back to a time when you had a memorable musical experience. Nearly all of us at some point have been totally captivated by a musical encounter, yet for most of us it doesn’t happen that often. Why is that? Initially we might think it was because of the musicians, the style of music, the venue, the company we kept, the mood, or in some cases, the state we were in or the amount we paid for the ticket!

Well and good. But if we begin to explore this further, I think we’ll find that we were simply more receptive to the experience on these occasions, and if we could become more receptive to music more often, we would start to find more beauty in it and have more of those memorable musical nights!

Many of us will be thinking, “…maybe that’s true if I make the effort, but it would need to be music I felt comfortable with”. And this is where I want to challenge you. I am not proposing we limit ourselves to concerts by our pet artists or even in our preferred styles of music, I’m suggesting that any artist (assuming they are of quality) in any style of music can lift and transport us by what they do. But they can only do that if we are receptive to what they are doing. When we are prepared to give them our time – to open our heart and trust them, in that moment they will take us away with them.

Be curious and search out music, but not just every now and then – do it as a practice! Go out and see very good musicians of whatever style playing live all around you. In time you might just thank me for it!

You Said It Re: Adani Mine

I read Ken Dyer’s letter in the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News (22/3/17) and feel that Ken totally misses the point regarding Adani Mine.

Adani will spend $21 billion of their own money and create 10,000 jobs for Queenslanders.

Jobs for Queenslanders ensure that our people have work and that families receive regular pay packets and not taxpayer funded welfare. At the end of the day 10,000 jobs supports 53,000 Queenslanders in small business and our rural communities.

I’m sure that we all support wind and solar power stations, but anyone who has ever been to South Australia and sat in the dark understands the need for base load power.

Any multinational that wishes to spend $21 billion and provide country Queenslanders with jobs needs to be supported and applauded.

I moved here with my family over three years ago and I am shocked to see the amount of drivers breaking the law such as: Failure to indicate, failure to stop at stop signs, going through red lights, talking on mobile phones whilst driving, speeding, parking in disabled and pram car parks, travelling too close to the vehicle in front.

I feel sorry for the heavy truck drivers trying to brake when a vehicle pulls in front of them and they have to brake, but by the same token how do they stop a 40 tonne vehicle when I have to brake and the truck is travelling two metres off my car?

I find it amazing trying to park and reverse out of the Beerwah Markets car park. Some drivers have no common sense, it is not a speedway.

Maybe they should display a sign at the entrance stating enter at your own risk. It doesn’t take much to drive safe.

Thank you for reading my whinge but I think it is my right to complain as I am now a disabled driver because someone like you failed to stop at a red light.

Let’s all drive safe and come home to our family.

NBN again

In the national newspaper, The Australian, on Tuesday, March 28 there was a lengthy two thirds page article about NBN's poor performances and the sloppy speeds that people across Australia are getting.

This included both fibre cable and wireless customers. The headline was ‘Outrage erupts over go-slow NBN’ and it included interviews and

The story indicated many Australians are not getting anything like the speeds promised by NBN or the speeds they've paid for. The disappointing results from this much promised “high speed” internet system is causing angst in towns and cities across the country.

Businesses are paying heaps for little or nothing – sometimes up to 1/500th of promised speeds. The problem of continual drop-outs is also there.

NBN blames the retailers and the retailers blame NBN. In particular the fibre to the node (FTTN) system is being blamed for the poor speeds. NBN also blames equipment problems.

If and when NBN finally comes to the Maleny and Beerwah districts what sort of speeds will we be able to get from them?

Remember all the early promises at public meetings of “up to” 25 Mbps on wireless towers and 50-100 Mbps in town on fibre cable. The examples from across Australia of poor performance and drop-outs don't inspire much confidence in NBN. Promises, promises!

At the moment many on ADSL2 just outside town get performances that are quite adequate and if wireless towers go in to the rural areas, based on this, what sort of performance can we then expect?

Snakes galore!

Grandchildren and the elderly are at risk of harm.

An overgrown pineapple plantation poses a threat to nearby residents at a Glass House Mountains residential area.

Holidaying from NSW, we recently visited our grandchildren and their other grandparent at Glass House Mountains.

This is snake country. We expect to see them in our yards but not to the ridiculous amount that the Australia Zoo's number is now set on speed dial.

We are concerned about an unused, overgrown pineapple plantation that abuts onto the family property.

Snakes from the neighbouring plantation pose a harmful threat to our grandchildren while playing in the backyard. On several occasions the children have yelled out for assistance. However, the elderly are compromised. We have put in snake alarms but they are not enough of a deterrent.

Does anyone else in the area have a rising snake problem in their yards as a result of an overgrown, pineapple plantation nearby? We could do with some advice from the locals.

Dangerous trees

Last Thursday we arrived home from Brisbane with minutes to spare, as a tree on the fence line of the adjacent property was blown down, taking power lines and fences with it.

Energex were called and arrived within the hour.

The two Energex men worked for five hours in the driving rain and gale force winds.

They worked methodically, patiently and professionally and not a swear word was heard!

They worked as a team, one suspended from the power pole and the other on the ground, ferrying equipment and tools up to his fellow worker.

They worked into the night under flood lights in the most appalling conditions, until all power was restored to the neighbourhood.

We offered them coffee which was gratefully accepted and then off they went to the next emergency.

Sadly all of this could have been avoided, if the owners of the property had done the responsible thing and had the tree removed months ago when it was clear that it had become unsafe.

Those two wonderful Energex men could have been working on another emergency, but instead five hours of their time was taken up, and the whole neighbourhood was impacted by the loss of power, and the neighbouring properties fencing damaged.

I was heading back to Maleny via the Bald Knob Road when I blew a tyre. I had to stop on the sealed section of the road, if I had pulled over I would have been bogged.

Why do more Australians prefer using mortgage brokers?

Recent data indicates that slightly more Australian property seekers favour using mortgage brokers over dealing directly with banks and lenders.

Brokers initiated $50.19 billion worth of new home loans during the last three months of 2016, according to research done by Comparator that was released

by MFAA. This amount accounts for more than half of all new home loans originated during this period.

When looking for a home loan, you can either go directly to a bank or lender, or use a mortgage broker to negotiate a great deal on your behalf.

This isn’t a recent trend, either. Mortgage brokers originated over half of new home loans in both the March 2015 and March 2016 quarters as well.

“The market share result for the end quarter of 2016 is just slightly ahead of the comparative figure for 2015,

showing that consumers still support the broker position with the majority of residential lending,” MFAA’s CEO Mike Felton told Australian Broker.

Introducing Bettina Gardiner and Jenny Walker Bettina and Jenny bring a wealth of experience to their roles as educators in the Centre’s Junior Kindy room. Bettina is the Junior Kindy room Lead Educator as well as being the Sustainability Officer for the Centre and Jenny is the Junior Kindy room assistant.

Following on from a career in the retail industry, Bettina was drawn to moving into childcare when her daughter attended the Centre. Bettina has now been teaching at the Glass House Early Education Centre for five years and has completed her Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. She is now looking to immerse herself in her chosen career and is planning to undertake additional professional development by studying a Bachelor of Teaching degree, with the full support of centre management and staff. as Lead Educator, Bettina works closely with the children and their families to start to introduce age appropriate structure and help establish routines into the Kindy rooms to help build the children’s confidence and sense of growing independence.

“I just love working with the two to three year olds. They love to learn at this age and they are so engaged in everything we do. It’s also wonderful to watch them learning to interact well with each other and develop their social skills,” says Bettina. as Sustainability Officer for the Centre, Bettina also tries to include the vital messages of reusing and recycling into the everyday activities of the children.

“We often get the parents to contribute by recycling their unneeded items to use for our activities or play based programs. We love letting the children use real items from home – it really contributes a positive sense of familiarity for the children.”

Jenny originally started in 2010 and taught for four years before taking time off to work for another provider and have her own child. She returned to work at the centre in 2016 and has enjoyed seeing many of the children she taught as toddlers now big school aged children who still remember her!

“It’s so lovely to come back and see so many familiar faces in both the staff members and the long term families who continue to be part of this amazing centre. Now my little boy goes here too and I just love the family like atmosphere that exists between staff, the parents and the children who attend the centre,” says Jenny.

Jenny is currently studying her Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care and really enjoys assisting Bettina in the Junior Kindy room.

“It’s such a nice age and even though they are still very young they are learning to be more independent and are just so interested in

everything around them. It’s exciting to see their learning journey unfold – they love to learn!” says Jenny.

In the Junior Kindy room, the children are encouraged to develop their knowledge base with activities such as cooking, learning about the life cycle of plants, recycling and sustainability. Each week a different child is encouraged to take ‘Cory the Caterpillar’ home which provides a great way for the children to start a conversation about what activities Cory enjoyed on the weekend!

New programs and international displays at Expo The annual Maleny Wood Expo is a celebration of beautiful native timbers and their sustainable uses, showcased through the craft of local, national and international wood artisans.

Maleny Wood Expo will this year welcome visitors from New Caledonia and from the French Polynesian Marquesas Islands. Sculptors Cecile Sakilia from Mont Dore, New Caledonia and Tekohu Taupotini (Kohu) from the Marquesas Islands will visit the Expo as part of the Sister Cities exchange program.

These visiting artists from the South Pacific will be creating unique and culturally representative pieces using traditional hand carving tools and techniques. Visitors to the show can see firsthand the skills of these traditionally inspired sculptors.

Cecile and Kohu will be working alongside local wood artist Shane Christensen whose intuitive work involves habitat sculptures, tree stump carvings and environmentally inspired art.

Through the Sister Cities artist exchange program, Shane had previously worked alongside the artists in New Caledonia. He is now excited to be involved in a reciprocal exchange bringing these two talented professional artists to the Expo.

Working to create freestyle entrance sentinels, Cecile and Kohu will demonstrate their expertise and allow visitors to be entranced by the almost meditative slow rhythm used by these highlyskilled traditional carvers.

The same procedure with the same implant on two different patients will result in a different result. While having sufficient bone to hold the implant is important, so is having enough gum around the crown of the implant to give a nice

When Lea suggested meeting for lunch at Bombay Bliss, I have to admit I was a bit excited as I absolutely love Indian food and so was particularly looking forward to sampling something a little exotic for lunch.

Walking into the restaurant on Simpson Street was like entering an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the street and you felt like you were transported to another country with the Indian wall mural, gorgeous hanging lamps and vibrant use of colours throughout.

The menu offered something for everyone with a huge selection of dishes including a mouth watering selection of entrees, tandoor oven baked breads and curries to suit all dietary requirements.

Inspired to try something different, I finally decided to have Palak Paneer vegetable curry (grilled paneer cheese cooked in spinach, tomato and spices) for $13.99 and Lea decided on the Thali Lunchtime Platter for $15.99 which consisted of a choice of curry served with rice,

entree of the day, vegetables of the day, butter naan and raita. In keeping with the Indian theme I also ordered a rose flavoured Lassi (yogurt drink) and Lea opted for a chai tea. With the awesome selection of breads on offer we also ordered extra Peswari naan filled with dried fruits and nuts.

When our dishes arrived we were both super impressed with the presentation and the use of copper bowls and serving dishes which added to the authentic atmosphere of our dining experience.

The dishes all looked amazing and the food was just superb! Fresh and flavoursome and oh, so tasty!

While we dined in, I noticed a number of daily takeaway specials as well as the full menu selection for takeaway options – all at very affordable prices. The specials board also had a takeaway ‘Beerwah Special Deal’ which had a large butter chicken, large lamb rogan josh, large rices, naan selections, spring rolls, raita and pappadums, all for $47.00, and which would easily feed a family. The Monday night banquet also looked amazing with a three course ‘all you can eat’ selection for just $25.00 and $10.00 for children under 10. The Sunshine Coast business community will be treated to a unique perspective on setting and achieving goals when world record-breaking solo pilot Lachie Smart delivers USC’s fourth annual Geoff Shadforth Memorial Lecture on Thursday, April 6.

Lachie, who last year became the youngest person to fly a single-engine aircraft around the world, will share how he planned and executed an eight-week, 45,000km flight across 18 countries at just 18 years old.

Now 19, the new USC Business student said his presentation would focus on how to harness ambition and overcome challenges in order to achieve big goals.

“I want to show that anything is possible if a kid from Nambour living in a single-parent home can plan, over two and a half years, a $350,000 trip around the world,” he said.

The popular annual lecture series honours the late Geoff Shadforth, whose passion for creating growth and opportunities on the Sunshine Coast is now maintained by the Shadforth family.

The stunning display titled 'Behind the Mask' is an accumulation of 10 art sessions with Year 6 River School students guided by the school’s Arts and Cultural teacher, Alieta Belle, and community artists, Leeza Stratford and Santosh Broom.

Each mask has been individually sculpted with plaster to create a cast of each student’s face.

Students used a variety of mediums and themes to embellish their masks to reflect what inspired them and what they related to.

The end result is an eclectic mix of masks, each with their own story. Individual artist statements accompany each mask, sharing the meaning behind the mask and the completion of a stimulating and enriching journey.

Trombone Kellie and the Muddy Roaders have a well deserved reputation for not only their skills as musicians, but also the gift of being truly entertaining and fully engaging with their audience.

They will entertain with their unique and versatile blend of jazz swing, rockabilly, New Orleans styles, trad jazz, jump blues, gospel, western swing, soul and more on Sunday, April 9 from 2.00pm to 4.30pm at the Currimundi Hotel, Buderim Street, Currimundi.

The growth from one million to 1.6 million trips a day is coming and the comprehensive draft Parking Management Plan is an important way to identify and get ahead of the pressure points. This smart parking plan applies common sense solutions and harnesses technology as a means to manage greater demand while providing real benefits to drivers, the community, business and visitors.

You can view all the draft plans on the project website ‘Have Your Say Sunshine Coast’, in our libraries or come along to a local information session. I encourage you to take a closer look at the draft local plans for our towns and to provide feedback by May 5.

Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra Pushing forward on Landsborough Rail Overpass dispute despite delays

Despite coming up against a number of delays I will continue to push the Government to listen to community concerns about the proposed rail overpass in Landsborough.

The community is now very aware that planned meetings with the Department and a follow-up forum have been continually delayed due to unexpected changes in important contacts as well as the recent Transport Minister shuffle.

Late last year we were moving quickly on this issue but I became concerned that things were beginning to drag, and it was in no small part due to the uncertainty of who the Minister for Transport was, given the train driver issues.

In February I made contact with Deputy Premier Jackie Trad to ensure that the matter had not been ‘lost in transit’. I received a letter on March 6 from the Minister acknowledging that correspondence had been received and advising the next stage for community consultation: “I am advised that, as discussed at your meeting on 9 November 2016 with Mr David Quinn, Chief Executive Officer of Building Queensland and Mr Andrew Powell MP, Member for Glasshouse, only a high-level reference design has been prepared as part of the B2N business case at this stage,” the letter read.

“Feedback received on the reference design during the October 2016 community consultation period has been incorporated into the consultation report that accompanies the business case, which will be considered by the government in 2017. If approved to proceed, this feedback will also be considered in future stages of the project. It is expected that future stages will include further consultation with the local community to inform that detailed design for construction,” the letter concluded.

To add to the setbacks, in February I was informed that the key contact at Building Queensland, Acting CEO David Quinn, who has been preparing the ground work for the government to decide if the project would proceed, had been replaced by permanent CEO Damian Gould.

However it seems that this game of “Hot Potato” is going to continue with Damian Gould of Building Queensland now flicking the matter on to somebody else in his email response of March 23.

The email read: “Since receipt of your letter we have been in discussions with the Project Owner, the Department of Transport and Main Roads, about establishing a meeting with you.

“Steve Kanowski, in his capacity as Chair of the Beerburrum to Nambour Steering Committee, has recently advised that your meeting request would be best coordinated through TransLink and they will be in contact shortly to arrange a meeting at the earliest opportunity.”

The time is, that we need to take ownership of this issue.

Plenty to talk about A reunion of the Grade 8 class of 1958 from Beerwah State School was held recently at the Beerwah Hotel. Everyone met up at 11.00am and didn’t leave until about 4.30pm, so it was one very long lunch with lots of catching up and reminiscing.

Barbara Grigor and Bev Maurer said it was a fun day and great to catch up, with 10 past pupils and their partners attending and with some travelling from North Queensland.

It’s the end of another school term. In the last few days, how many times have you heard teachers and children counting down to the holidays?

There can be a sense of excitement that “we are nearly there”, while also holding anxiety as projects and assessments are to be completed and marking needs to be finalised.

With tiredness and time constraints we can quickly lack patience. The end of school term for parents can hold mixed emotions. There is the anticipation of no school lunches, washing and ironing of uniforms, no pick up and drop offs.

At the same time questions can be asked, “What will we do this holiday?” and “Can I cope with the children being at home all the time?”

There could be some anxiety in trying to find other entertainment solutions other than screen devices.

These are very real feelings and concerns and

when collated with anxieties of other aspects of life – work, relationships, family, finances, health, etc – we can easily become overwhelmed and wonder how we will cope.

In the Bible, we find Peter giving an encouraging word to the leaders of the church who were facing uncertainty. “Cast all your anxiety on God because God cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7).

These words can encourage us as leaders in our children’s lives.

Peter is saying that we don’t have to face these anxieties on our own. If we turn to God we will find a way through these challenges so that they are life giving rather than life draining. So whatever is confronting you in the last few days of term or in the unknown future, may you find peace in the one who loves you and wants the best for you.

Hang in there and seek God, as I believe the children in your care will benefit greatly.

Veggie Notes Garlic

April is garlic planting month, but be warned … they are a long term prospect. Cloves planted now will see you harvesting your own garlic anytime from October to December.

The best varieties to grow locally are ‘Glenlarge’ and ‘Southern Glen’.

These superior large-cloved varieties were developed at the DPI Gatton Research Station. They are the high yielding and have a light purpling of the outer skin.

Avoid planting garlic purchased at the fruit and vege shop, as this is likely to be imported garlic with an associated risk of introducing serious virus diseases to your soil. Another popular variety is ‘Giant Russian’ garlic, which is really a member of the leek family.

Garlic does best in light, well-drained soil and likes full sun. Improve the soil by adding compost or well-rotted animal manures before planting.

Plant your garlic as single cloves. A good place to buy them is from Green Harvest, based in Maleny (www.greenharvest.com.au).

Garlic requires a cooler growing season, so if you plant them too early or too late, they tend to form small, less flavoursome bulbs.

Cloves should be planted in rows 45–60cm apart, with 8–13cm between plants, and no deeper than 5cm. Make sure the flat end is pointing down and the pointy end is up – otherwise you’ve planted the clove upside down.

After planting, water them well, but don’t water again until they start shooting from the soil – overly wet soil can lead to the cloves rotting before they shoot.

As the shoots come through the soil, mulch around them, as one thing garlic doesn’t like is competition from weeds.

Another thing developing garlic doesn’t like is drying out or alternating between too wet and too dry.

Keep a regular watering regime going right through until they mature.

In most good fertile soils, garlic will do well just with some added nitrogen – either in the form of urea, animal manures or chook manure pellets. If your soil is sandy or a little nutrient poor, then apply a complete garden fertiliser every month.

Garlic doesn’t show when it’s mature as easily as onions – which die down quite readily.

With garlic, you’ll notice that the tops may begin to yellow and brown or the youngest leaves will die off.

Don’t wait till all the leaves have died down before harvesting. Lift out the bulbs when you think that they have started to mature. Take care as mishandling can bruise the bulbs and they won’t store very well.

Once lifted, shake the dirt off then let them dry off a little – maybe a week. Then cut off the leaves and store in a dry covered spot.

Glasshouse Orchid Society We had a great roll up to our March meeting, held at the Glasshouse RSL Hall. As always, there were some lovely plants on display, with Theo’s Miltonia, Lillian Nakamoto, ‘ Tanto’ judged to be the best on the night.

Sue and Michael Keegan had a great evening, winning best Dendrobium with their ‘Airy Blue’, and best Cattleya with (C. Caudebec x C. Lulu ‘Hot Pink’) x C. Koolau ‘Fragrant’, and best Species with Doritis Pulcherrima ‘Pale x self’.

Jen Kelly had the best Other Hybrid with her Zygonisia Cynosure ‘Blue Birds’. Foliage went to Jan and Trevor Heitman with their Tassel Fern and new member Don Perry took out the Novice section with his Phalaenopsis.

Our next meeting will be held at the Glasshouse RSL on Thursday evening, April 20, at 7.30pm.

A must for any edible garden is Midyim, Austromyrtus dulcis, a low growing weeping shrub or groundcover to 1m, with delicate foliage and masses of white flowers and small but tasty fruit. Midyim grows naturally along the coast in Northern NSW to South East Queensland. It is an attractive addition to your garden with coppery pink / burgundy new growth, white flowers in spring and abundant little 1cm whitish berries with tiny mauve spots.

This hardy and adaptive little shrub is suitable for containers, rockeries, as understorey beneath taller shrubs and trees or along garden edges.

Midyim is happy in full sun or part shade.

The delicious pale berries are best eaten raw straight off the plant, seeds and all, and taste pleasantly sweet like blueberry with a slight eucalypt spice note. Fruit can also be made into jam or sauces or added to salads and fruit pies. I’ve also eaten an amazing Midyim flavoured Turkish Delight.

Plant an Austromyrtus dulcis today and it will soon be a favourite to kids and a welcome plant to local bees, birds and butterflies in your edible garden.

Excellent team spirit at the Queensland Open San Taekwondo sent their biggest ever competition team of 10 fighters to the Queensland Open Championships on Sunday. The team finished with 5 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze.

There were great displays of sportsmanship and team spirit. The coaches were impressed with how all the students helped each other to prepare for their bouts and cheered each other on.

Although Taekwondo is an individual sport it is not possible to be successful without the help and support of your team and it is great to see the senior students demonstrating great leadership and the whole club supporting each other.

San has a great community at the club and it's amazing to see the friendships that the students develop.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Neil Lovett On Sunday Nick Cram 26 downed Vince Carbery 9, and Sarah Widin and Helen Andrews held off Ken Barker to win 18-15.

Three of our better players, Ken, Vince and Nick are playing in the Sunshine Coast Regional Tournament at Buderim, and we hope to report some success next week. Vince has played 20 or so times in this tournament, starting in his early days in Division 4 and working his way up to Division 1, frequently winning. Play was not possible on Thursday, but we hope to have some play to report next week. Our lawns are situated in the Maleny Showgrounds in Stanley River Road. Next term San will be expanding its sports taekwondo program, adding an advanced class.

The development team will then contest the Gold Coast Open in May, while elite fighters Cameron and Kasia will travel to a week-long training camp as part of the Australian National team development camp at the Institute of Sport in Canberra before fighting at the New Zealand Open.

Another title for Ben

Ben Lewis from Glass House Mountains has another title under his judo belt.

A member of the Maleny Judo Club, he recently won the Brisbane Open tournament in the men’s under 66kg division.

He now adds that to his other current gold medal titles from the Queensland State Titles and the Queensland International Tournament.

Next on Ben’s hit list is the Australian titles at the Gold Coast in June.

And who knows … the Commonwealth Games are just around the corner.

Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Ian Hansen Monday’s Monthly Jackpot Pairs winners with two wins +28 were the Mapleton Pair of Brian Read and Ray Burgess. The Runners-up, also from Mapleton, with +14 in the second game were Allan Lewis and Terry Strijland. The $200.00 Jackpot was won when +22 was drawn from the barrel to make Peter Duffy and Bob Caulley extremely happy. The raffle winners were Bill Edwards, Bob Caulley and Terry Strijland.

Tuesday’s winners were Peter Duffy and Marie Anderson (regular visitor from Hervey Bay) but their score wasn’t recorded. The Jackpot wasn’t won so continues to increase in value.

Wednesday evening the weather put paid to any chance of playing bowls. Don’t forget next week is the beginning of the next round of the Twilight Challenge. Three rinks of Scroungers were played Friday afternoon and the winners were: Doug McGufficke, Joe Walters and John Long. Not a solitary Sponsors’ Prize winner was present to

claim their winnings and the lucky Money Board winner was Monica Sherwood.

The AGM Saturday afternoon was quite well attended and the following positions were filled: Chairman - Graeme Glover, Men’s President - Allan Cook, Ladies' President - Kay Gesch, Secretary - Joe Walters and Directors - Jim King and Dennis Kyling. No Treasurer was nominated, but this vacancy will be resolved at the Board Meeting next week. It’s great to see some newer members taking on Board Positions.

This week there will be Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, the first round of the Twilight Challenge Wednesday and Scroungers Friday.

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES Many practice laps paid off for Peachester State School students with almost every child completing the cross country course last Tuesday, March 28.

All students put in a great effort and tried their best with big smiles on crossing the finish line.

This was an especially big achievement for our preppie students as the course wound around the school’s forest boundary and cricket oval, including hills and terrain, and it was a very steamy day.

Thanks to our sports teacher Mr John McKie for getting the students prepared during the last weeks of sports lessons and some lunch times.

We wish Mr McKie all the best during his next weeks of paternity leave to welcome his first child.

Congratulations to all of our place-getters.

It was getting hot and by the end we'd had enough, but were happy we got enough games. Score was 44-25 games, 6-2 sets. Both Wagtails and Wildcats matches were called off due to the weather.

Having to win outright proved to be just out of reach for our ladies. The pairs team had a great win but the triples team went down for an overall loss.

Glasshouse 2 played at home against Yandina.

Well done to both the pairs and triples team who both had wins taking the whole 3 points.

The ladies have had a great year, winning lots of games and should finish in the top 3. Hinterland Men played away against Nambour, our men only managed to win one rink but put up a great fight.

It’s been overall a very good year for both our men and lady sides. An expression of interest sheet is up in the office shed for Men's Pennants for 2017. We are after more players. This year our Club is in Division 1 and 4.

Monday Monthly Jackpot Open Triples will be back on April 24. Cost will be $15.00 per person for two games of 15 ends with lunch included. Please arrive 10.00am for a 10.30am start. Last year was very successful so I hope we get the numbers again. Our club only has two regular social bowling days and this particular day usually gets bowlers from other clubs participating. This day does have a Jackpot starting at $100.00.

Every Sunday our club runs bowls coaching from 10.30am to noon. This morning is open to everyone who wants to come along for a bowl, either for fun or to improve their game.

Maleny Little A’s future?

All interested community members are invited to attend an urgent meeting being convened to discuss the future of the Maleny Little Athletics Centre. The meeting will be held at the Little Athletics Shed, at Maleny High School on Thursday, April 6 starting at 5.00pm.

Maleny Little As has been in operation for thirty years and is one of the few small athletic clubs that has managed to keep going every season since opening.

This is a huge achievement that all past and present members should feel proud of.

The meeting will hopefully be quick and the main aims are to check there is enough interest in keeping the club going for the 2017-2018 season www.gcnews.com.au
