Hi Everyone...

What's On this week

This week I heard myself saying “Ahhh, spring is finally here”.

When I was younger I didn’t think I had a favourite time of the year but as I get older I realise that it is true, I love spring.

I definitely think there is a bit of an awakening that happens once the days start to warm up as we creep into the final days of winter at the end of August and then September arrives and more things start to happen.

Well, that definitely seems the case looking at the number of news stories in this week’s paper.

While we are on the topic of favourites, my favourite story this week is the one on page 3 about local Glass House Mountains mum Bianca Robertson who recently became the mother of triplets and mum to four little people under two.

Over the years Bianca has featured in quite a few stories in GC&M News. She is definitely high energy and high achieving, so fingers crossed this makes her the perfect candidate for the task at hand.

Congratulations to Bianca, her husband Pete and their little boy Maverick. We hope the transition to being a family of six goes well.

5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop were joined by the 2nd Light Horse Regiment Woombye Troop, the Cooroy and District Memorial Troop, Australian Army Veterinary Corps and the Queensland Mounted Infantry Historical Troop.

Local News Congratulations and wow

The Robertson family of Glass House Mountains doubled in size recently when mum of one Bianca gave birth to triplets born at 34 weeks, making Bianca and husband Pete parents with four children under two.

Indiana, Dakota and Hendrix created plenty of excitement at the hospital as the first set of natural triplets to be born at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Neonatologist Dr Charles Kilburn describes natural triplets as very uncommon and a very special situation.

It was not quite what Bianca had been planning, saying that she had been asking the universe for twins “and somewhere along the line I overshot”.

The recent expansion of the hospital’s neonatal unit means that SCUH has gone from a level four to a level five nursery.

“Multiple births meant babies were often at least a few weeks premature and their blood sugar and breathing needed some monitoring,” Dr Kilburn said.

“We've got additional staff and additional facilities that allow us to look after these smaller and younger babies locally rather than have them transferred away to Brisbane.”

The triplets each weighed more than 2kg at birth and the hospital has advised that all three babies are doing very well.

Bianca, Pete and their two-year-old son Maverick are settling into life as a family of six.

Seqwater announced in February that it planned to close the popular Ewen Maddock Dam for a range of recreational activities to allow for maintenance projects to be undertaken.

This would have stopped all on-water activities, including swimming, for a period of 18 months from August.

However, the works have been rescheduled meaning that – to the relief of local families – the water will remain open for swimming until Seqwater finalises the new project timeline.

Seqwater chief executive officer Neil Brennan said that unfortunately the tender process did not result in any viable tenders.

“Dam upgrades are highly technical and complex projects. We are now conducting a post tender review to better understand the response of potential contractors before re-issuing a tender for the project. The new tender will reflect the review process,’’ Mr Brennan said.

“The upgrade of Ewen Maddock will increase

the dam's resilience to extreme events and bring the dam in line with modern engineering design standards. The revised construction schedule will not increase any risks to dam safety.”

To undertake the upgrade safely the lake’s water level will need to be lowered to about 60 per cent of its full supply level.

During the upgrade, all on-water recreation, including the designated swimming and beach area, will be closed for the duration of the upgrade work. The closure will also extend to Maddock Park, which will be required as a set down area for the project.

Once the new timeline for the project is finalised Seqwater will host a community event at the newly renovated wetlands area to update interested locals.

Official opening of Ziza Field

By Jennifer Kent Ahead of the 101st anniversary of the historic World War I event known as the surrender of Ziza, federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace last Saturday, August 31, officially opened the training grounds for the 5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop.

The field is now formally known as Ziza Field, in honour of the 5th Light Horse Regiment’s involvement in the Battle of Ziza during the war.

Special guests, including state Member for Glass House Andrew Powell and senior representatives from the Australian Light Horse, joined members of the public for the unveiling of the hand-crafted timber plaque, which was sourced from local timber and made and donated by the Maleny Men’s Shed.

The ceremony was followed by a welcoming morning tea and a chance for guests to socialise and reflect on the importance of the Australian Light Horse Regiment, both historically and in modern life.

The morning also saw a gathering of Light Horse troops visiting from Brisbane, Woombye, Gympie and Gold Coast regiments. Up to 20 horses came together showcasing troop displays and skills at arms for guests, ahead of their afternoon training with Maleny regiment.

“It is always great to see the different troops get together to support one another at these types of events,” Maleny Troop commander Rob Werry said.

“It was a great morning and we’re proud to be able to share the story of the battle of Ziza with those who aren’t aware and pay respect to those who fought there.”

The surrender at Ziza was an unusual event during World War I, which saw Turkish troops, surrounded by Arabian soldiers from the Beni Sakhr tribes, join with members of the Australian Australian Light Horse Association vice president Laurie Watts, Light Horse Regiment in defensive Andrew Wallace MP and Maleny Light Horse president Terry positions against the Arabs.

James Grimard Candidate for Division 1 James is a Mt Mellum resident who wants to see a fair go for hinterland communities.

“Throughout the past 18 months, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many residents and businesses who have shared with me their concerns regarding local issues,” James said.

“It is becoming extremely apparent that the local community is very disturbed by the lack of employment opportunities that our region provides.

“In addition, locals are united in their concerns facing the local farming industry. Our local farmers have been without government support for too long, and it’s time to change that.”

A born-and-bred Sunshine Coaster, James has a passion for public service and holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Bond University.

“Prior to running for local government, I worked as a consultant in the Brisbane CBD specialising in HR services within the life sciences field.

Prior to that I worked extensively in business-tobusiness sales.”

If elected, James is dedicated to being as accessible as possible, and has committed to hold open constituent office hours for those who need to discuss issues.

“I will also make it my duty to amplify both the strengths and needs of our region to state and federal governments,” James said.

“Regionally, I am devoted to becoming a powerful voice for local farmers, family businesses and regional industry.

“Being largely involved with the Maple Street (Maleny) Co-operative, I am very focused on uniting the Sunshine Coast community through providing support to local organisations and businesses.”

“I’m running as an independent candidate so that our farmers, family businesses and local industry can prosper once again.

“Locals need industrial development if we’re to improve our standard of living and not just continue down struggle street. It’s an issue that can improve every local person’s life and I’m the only candidate who is 110 per cent determined to get it done.

“I’m also running to ensure that the Sunshine Coast local government remains fair and honest.

Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

GC&M News election commitment to you Local government elections roll around every four years, so next March we will have the opportunity to vote for a local divisional councillor on Sunshine Coast Council and for the Sunshine Coast mayoral role.

As part of GC&M News’ continuing commitment to be the source of genuine, trusted information for local people regarding the candidates and the election process as a whole, we will, once again, commit significant newsprint and digital space and resources to making sure you – the reader and voter – have everything you need to make your vote count.

We will strive to bring you a balanced, evenhanded, credible and local approach to our election coverage so that you can make the most informed choice possible.

We won’t pretend that we can cover everything going on during the campaign or present in-depth critical analyses of policies and announcements, but we will bring you the news that matters what local candidates have to say about issues impacting the lives of local people.

Over the coming months, as candidates announce their intention to stand at the election, we will offer all equally a story in the paper to outline who they are, what they stand for, what they can offer as your representative and why they deserve your vote.

We will be asking the candidates questions on local council-related issues and printing their

We will also encourage robust but respectful contributions to the You Said It letters page, which must adhere to our editorial guidelines and space restrictions.

Business News Cellarbrations Landsborough celebrates organic month September is the month to celebrate all things organic and at Michael from Rosnay Wines the Cellarbrations bottleshop at the Landsborough Hotel, the party started early thanks to Rosnay Organics raffling a small hamper last Saturday.

It was a great lead up to the month-long event, which is now in its sixth year at Cellarbrations Landsborough. The event highlights all things organic, showcasing a range of organic, preservative free and biodynamic wines, beers and ciders.

Cellarbrations will be offering daily wine tastings as well as plenty of specials throughout the month.

The Sunshine Coast will be buzzing with young people and their supporters on Friday, September 20 when they gather for climate action at the Global Strike for Climate.

From 12noon until 2pm Cotton Tree Park and surrounds will be a bright, colourful display of Sunny Coasters' passion for meaningful climate action.

A large contingent from Maleny is preparing to attend and the numbers are increasing.

Year 11 Maleny High School student Violet said she felt the strike was an amazing opportunity for everyone to come together and voice their

opinions to make a real impact on how we run not only a nation but a planet.

Year 9 student Eli said the event was on the last day of school this term, “so why wouldn't you want to prioritise being involved in such an historic movement".

He is excited to be part of what is a global day of action, with climate strikes being held in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and in cities around the world.

"We see the climate crisis all over social media, the news, in the weather and in our own lives. We can't avoid it anymore, so why not stand behind and support young people fighting for their futures," said Izzy, who is in a gap year and has an articulate passion for speaking up for the environment and for her younger siblings' future.

In Maleny the meeting point is the Maple Street bus stop at 10am to colourfully wave off those taking the bus to the event.

Dr Anthony Lynham, the Queensland Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy, dropped by to take a look at the new park in Peachester last Thursday on his way back to Brisbane, and the local community made sure he felt very welcome.

The level of community passion for their park so impressed Dr Lynham that he just had to see for himself what all the fuss was about.

And he wasn’t disappointed.

“This will be a wonderful space for local children and families to meet and play,” he said to the gathered crowd.

“Without the commitment of the Peachester residents, Sunshine Coast Council staff and Cr Rick Baberowski himself, this opportunity may have been lost.

“Well done everyone.”

Sod turned on Butterfly House

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt visited the Sunshine Coast to turn the first sod on Australia’s first specialist residential treatment facility for eating disorders - endED Butterfly House at Mooloolah Valley.

The facility, which is the vision of local charity endED and its founders Mark and Gayle Forbes, has received extensive local community support in addition to $6 million in federal funding.

Eating disorders are extremely complex illnesses and have one of the highest mortality rates of any psychiatric illness, with anorexia by far the deadliest mental health condition in Australia. Treatment requires intensive wraparound support and residential centres are essential to deliver this care.

The new facility, located on an idyllic rural property, will provide accommodation and 24/7 intensive care for up to 12 patients at a time.

It will cement the Sunshine Coast’s place as a national leader in the treatment of eating disorders.

The centre will be a communal complex that includes a treatment facility, amenities for cooking, relaxation, fitness rooms and therapy rooms.

Girls only cricket launches on the coast

The Sunshine Coast Cricket Association will launch its girls-only junior competition for girls aged 11–14 years in mid-October.

The Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club, along with the Maleny and Landsborough cricket clubs, is hoping to pitch a team in this exciting new format.

One player who is fully behind it is Anastasia Maher who is passionate about the sport and has been a part of the local Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club for the past three years.

Anastasia says while she has enjoyed playing alongside the boys, she’d really love to be part of an all-girls team. “I love playing cricket and signing up a few years ago was the best decision,” she said.

“Team work and cooperation are two of the most important parts of cricket but it also very thrilling and requires strategy, which I love.

Plus, you make plenty friends along the way.”

Anastasia’s love of cricket began at an early age, treasuring time spent with her father watching countless games. She says of all the sports she plays, cricket is certainly her favourite.

“I didn’t realise how much fun playing cricket could be and I’d love for other girls to give it a go this season too.”

Leanne McAllister, from Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club, said the club was excited about the opportunities of the girls-only competition and encouraged anyone interested to attend the come and try sessions on Tuesday, September 10 from 4-5.30pm at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club to see what it’s all about.

Leanne said girls who attended would enjoy a laid-back afternoon with an introduction to the basics of cricket, including batting and bowling and plenty of fun activities, as well as a chance to meet others who are interested in playing together.

“We already have some great players who are eager to start their own team and we’re hoping to encourage more girls to get involved and enjoy the sport,” Leanne said.

To give the players a greater chance of experiencing all the action of cricket, pitches are slightly modified to a smaller field and games run for two hours on Saturday mornings. The women’s teams play every second Sunday following the T20 format.

“We have our first ever under 10s team, our junior girls team, which is for girls between 11 and 14 years of age, and our women’s team for 14 years and up.”

Rugby union milestone

The Maleny Bushrangers Rugby Union season has finished for the year and the club is preparing for its annual presentation evening on Saturday night, September 7 at the Maleny RSL Club.

Each season brings a range of achievements and highlights for individual players but one key milestone is that of long-time club member, 23-year-old Shaun Arnold–Brown, who played his 100th senior game for the club in reserve grade.

Shaun’s love of the game of rugby began in 2001 as a five year old playing in the Maroochydore Rugby Union Club’s under 7s, only turning six at the end of the season.

When the Maleny Junior Rugby Union Club formed the following year, Shaun became the first to sign on for its under 7s team.

Fast forward to 2019 when Shaun, a senior for the Maleny Bushrangers, played his 100th senior game for the club on July 27, which was made all the sweeter when he scored a try and kicked two conversions.

Shaun said rugby has been the biggest catalyst in his life and that he was proud to pull on the blue, green and gold for the 100th time.

Shaun joined the Maleny Bushrangers Senior Colts in 2012 after being allowed dispensation to play up, as he was only 17 years old.

He has also played two seasons of grid iron (American football) with the Sunshine Coast Spartans - one season in juniors and one in the senior division.

Shaun was an Australian representative in the junior side that played American representative sides in a Down Under Bowl competition.

Shaun also spent 18 months in the USA on a rugby part scholarship where he had the opportunity to play rugby and rugby sevens, as well as receiving an American college degree.

Shaun regards playing rugby and rugby sevens in America as among the special moments in his sporting career, alongside the thrill of reaching and playing in premierships with the Bushrangers and the opportunity of touring Canada and the USA with the Australian Outback Barbarians.

His Bushrangers team finished third in the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union reserve grade competition this season. They were knocked out in the minor semi-final bringing their season to an end.

Shaun, who regards camaraderie among team mates as the most important part of rugby, simply reckons that young kids should get involved, have fun and enjoy playing the game.

“Contact has been established with the Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade project team (B2N project), which is based in Maroochydore.

The B2N project team was given authority in late May, which perhaps explains the lack of information in the public sphere to date,” Tim said.

It appears local residents can expect to see and hear more about the overpass project in the near future.

“Now we can expect a flow on information about the project,” Tim said.

“As an example, the B2N project team has commissioned the production of a survey from Beerburrum through to Nambour. This survey is meant to identify issues concerning electrical cables, sewage lines, fauna, flora and roads.”

He said this helped explain the presence of survey teams in and around Landsborough recently.

Plans for the proposed rail overpass in Landsborough are gradually progressing according to the Landsborough Overpass Reference Committee (LORC).

LORC is a 14-member committee bringing together groups, businesses and residents. It was established after the community forum held in April to discuss the community’s concerns and aspirations for Landsborough when the rail overpass is finally built.

Tim Fitzpatrick, from Landsborough Chemist, chairs the committee and he is pleased with the progress so far.

He said LORC had been meeting every two weeks since its inception in May. “The committee is in the process of reviewing the different plans and ideas with the goal of compiling a portfolio of ideas for public consideration,” Tim said.

“The committee has been in contact with Mark Bailey [Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads] with regard to the overpass and

Community Groups Gift economy for local region

A new Facebook group, set up by local Jaye Lange, hopes to encourage a sense of community and giving through its concept of an online gift economy with the Buy Nothing Project.

The closed group, of which Jaye is a volunteer administrator, welcomes locals within the Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Landsborough and Peachester region to join the initiative, which originated in the United States.

The concept of the group is to “buy nothing, give freely and share creatively”, encouraging members to give where they live.

“It gives locals a chance to give and share with their neighbours,” Jaye said.

“And while it starts out about stuff, it really turns out to be about people and being able to help others where they can.”

She first got involved in the initiative while living in Perth, where she had an oversupply of children’s toys she no longer needed and was able to pass them on to others in the group who needed toys.

“There’s no exchange of money, that’s not what it’s about,” she said.

“When we moved back to the Glass House Mountains area, I noticed that it wasn’t really used here so I decided to get it up and running locally.”

Jaye said while the global initiative runs successfully elsewhere, it is just in its beginnings on the Sunshine Coast and she hopes to increase the local group’s members for the community to experience the positive effect and to start finding homes for gifts.

Generations connect through learning

Every Tuesday young families come together at the Mooloolah Valley Country Club to learn from older generations through the Intergenerations Connect project.

The project, which is supported by Stockland Aura’s Good to Give grant program, is an initiative that aims to bridge the gap between generations through skill-based sharing and learning essential village-like skills.

Having kicked off the program in July, the response from the public has been overwhelmingly positive and they are calling for over 55s (elders) who are interested in sharing their skills, knowledge and wisdom with younger generations, in a relaxed and supervised setting.

The program is the brain child of Taryn Matulj, which came about through observing traditional Indigenous villages and the way in which they live, and wanting to create a village feel within an urban environment for others to feel a sense of connectiveness.

“We believe it’s important for children to enjoy the outdoors and come together with elders within the community to learn from their knowledge about life,” she said.

“Our older generations have so much knowledge and so many skills that our kids aren’t even aware of and this initiative gives them a chance to come together and share.”

It’s a great opportunity for adults to get to know the younger community and be a part of their learning about the world around them. Taryn says they are currently looking for elders who may have skills in weaving, fishing, bee hives, bush shelter and native plants, and basic survival skills.

Elders don’t need to be formally trained, and parents and supervisors are on hand to assist with children and activities.

The following week we enjoyed a trip to the Caboolture Historical Village.

Here we marvelled at the ease of modern living compared to the hard physical exercise of living a century ago. If you have not recently visited the Historical Village, you will be amazed at the number of new exhibits.

Two that impressed were a machine that buttered slices of an entire loaf of bread and the Agnes Gilligan Collection of Dolls, which were beautifully dressed, with no two alike – a lifetime’s work. The enthusiasm of the many volunteers who give their time and skill to making it an exciting place also impressed. If Probus activities sound like your cup of tea why not join us.

Lions recycling your old spectacles

Have you ever wondered what to do with those old spectacles and sunglasses that have been sitting in a drawer for years? Then wonder no more!

Each local Lions Club collects them for the Lions Recycle for Sight program.

All spectacles are tested and graded at the Lions recycling centres in Caboolture and Redcliffe by volunteers from the community and Lions.

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program, which has been in operation for 26 years.

During this time the program has delivered more than seven million pairs of refurbished quality spectacles to men, women and children in developing countries.

Good news for our wildlife

The news with regards to the deaths of kangaroos on the range is a sign of changes occurring. Even worse, this year I have already counted 21 dead ring tailed possums on the roads around Maleny.

In a normal year you might see three or four, but 21! Can we all take a little more care when driving.

However, there is a good news story for our wildlife.

A resident on Kenilworth Road has replaced his old long hedge row of privet across the front of his property and replaced it with a beautiful local rainforest native, small leaved lilly pilly. An old privet can produce upwards of 500,000 fruit, every year. Virtually all will germinate and produce a new tree somewhere. Some say it is providing food for the birds but not the right food. Please don’t forget privet causes immense distress to those who suffer from allergies.

Within two years the new lilly pillys will be producing the right food for our small to medium birds, as the majority of our birds are fruit eaters.

But unfortunately rainforest natives don’t fruit every year like weeds (except for a few pioneer species). It can be from five to ten years, and then they only produce a small amount of fruit compared to privet and only a handful will go on to actually germinate. If we don’t start to remove privet and all other woody invasive weeds, the imbalance that is already occurring will sky rocket. It is the future that we need to plan for.

If we recognise woody weeds when they are seedlings they can just be pulled out. Replace them with a suitable local rainforest native that produces fruit for our wildlife, and you will make a difference.

What’s in a name?

Some time ago, the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC) and several of Maleny's service clubs announced they would develop a pioneer park on a strip of roadside land on a site that MDSRC leases on the Maleny precinct. Recent work on the project is accompanied by a large sign describing the amenity under a new name, Settlers Green.

Those familiar with village greens will know they are identical to parks, being open space freely available to the locals for exercise, recreation, sports and pastimes. A green is also flat (most of the MDSRC site is on a slope) and known simply as The Green.

Does this matter? Yes it does. Council has strict policies regarding the use of the word 'park' and on the naming of parks. It matters that these are not cynically skirted by using a different term, and it matters that community space doesn't venerate settlers or anyone else without the locals having a say.

Families who use the green will be allowed access to a large, flat adjoining paddock and although this seems like a great idea, there's a problem as there are no shade trees.

Why? Because under a sub-lease to the 5th Light Horse Regiment the paddock must be kept in a condition suited to horse riding.

To show families and others that Settlers Green and the Light Horse paddock are their lot, MDSRC has erected another sign proclaiming the rest of their leased area a sports park.

Apart from the anomaly that it is home to a bridge club and a museum, this also contradicts council policies on parks.

More than this, it sends a message that vacant, park-perfect Platypus Bend, which makes up half the leased area, will continue to be sealed by an electric fence. It's approved use based on the 2016 Maleny Sport and Recreation Master Plan is multi use equestrian fields, including a polo field.

A strange priority, and an expensive one, for a town short on more inclusive amenities.

Beerwah intersection upgrade

I was so pleased, and just a tiny bit proud, to see in last week’s Glasshouse Country & Maleny News the State Government’s plans for the intersection upgrade outside the Beerwah State School. To upgrade and install traffic lights at this dangerous intersection was a commitment that Labor’s candidate for Caloundra Jason Hunt and I made in the lead up to the 2017 state election.

We door knocked hundreds of homes in the local area and the need to fix the intersection of Peachester and Old Gympie roads came up time and time again.

We didn’t get the chocolates on election night but our commitments are being delivered for our local communities. That’s good government.

You Said It Re: Poor dog management

In response to Cr Jenny McKays comments about poor dog management on the Maleny precinct, I accept the council's regulation to have dogs on leash on the precinct, perhaps with the exception of a couple of very sweet doddery old 14-15-yearold creatures who can barely walk let alone run/ attack/annoy any dogless walkers.

If Maleny could be provided with a dog off-leash park the “problem” would be solved.

When you compare the cost of a golf course, or mooted swimming pool, to a smallish fenced area it amazes me that council's so-called plans have not included funding for this purpose, that have been provided in many other nearby communities.

Most people who care about dogs relate lovingly and kindly to non-human creatures and are richer for it and it is usually reciprocated.

Dogs are often a conduit for conversation and break the communication “ice” for many who may be lonely and craving human or creature contact.

I am appalled at the suggestion of a dog-free precinct. Maleny is a vibrant, artistic and community-infused town.

There are many rescue dogs as well as special breeds and there are no class distinctions, unlike in so many human activities in other areas.

Maybe the Sunshine Coast Council could constrain arrogant runners (yes, this is a complaint) or people wearing torn-knee jeans (just kidding) or people talking loudly on the phone (not kidding). There are hundreds of things that could be banned if this silliness continues.

Instead of banning dogs, please consider relaxation and relationships as communitybuilding outcomes that would be fostered by an off-leash dog park.

Climate wars heating up

Like our planet, the climate wars are heating up. Denialists have found that denial and misinformation are losing their effect and they are now resorting to insults and lies.

Swedish student Greta Thunberg has celebrity status as a climate activist and therefore gets the strongest abuse.

Andrew Bolt describes her as a “deeply disturbed messiah” having “many mental disorders”.

Steve Milloy, a Trump associate, said she is an “ignorant teenage climate puppet”. UK journalist Brendan O’Neill says she has “apocalyptic dread in her eyes” and is “obsessed with doomsday prophecies”.

Anyone with any celebrity status that has the courage to question Australian conservative climate policies is also fair game.

The denialists have learnt from Trump that releasing a tsunami of lies is an effective political strategy.

Frothing off lies seems like a good strategy if you are untroubled by ethics because a plausible lie spreads quickly but the correction takes longer and is lost amongst the new lies.

Is the standard of public debate going down the drain? Perhaps, but at least we can be grateful that there is a fair level of civility in the GC&M News.

Rehearsals are under way for the upcoming afternoon of musical treasures by the Sunshine Coast Choral Society on Sunday, September 8 at the Gregson and Weight Memorial Chapel at Maroochydore.

The choir and four soloists will be accompanied by the Sunshine Coast Chamber Strings and will perform favourite works by Mozart, Schubert and Pergolesi.

The society has around 60 members with 52 participating in this performance including talented local singers and musicians from Maleny, Beerwah and Peachester.

The musicians accompanying the choir will be predominately strings as well as harpsichord/organist Natasha Koch.

Music Today Music as a form of meditation

In meditation we use a technique such as mindfulness or focussing on an object, activity or thought to train our attention and to achieve a clear and calm state. For many, meditation allows them to connect with their deeper self.

Walking in the bush can be a form of meditation. The nourishment found in the natural environment is even more rewarding if you are at peace yet attentive.

Playing a musical instrument can similarly be a meditative experience.

For most musicians this will only happen on occasion and it isn’t likely until you have grown to the point where what you are doing feels effortless and you are able to totally absorb yourself in the music you are making.

It is one of the reasons so many of us take up our instrument each day. It is a sanctuary within ourselves that allows us to vacate our normal noisy mind condition for a period.

We know the feeling of calm and deep peace, and the beauty of the sound that emanates when we give ourselves to what we are playing.

Sometimes we can recognise it in another’s performance.

They have moved beyond ego and are now just playing the piece before them. They have entered that zone and we can benefit from it in the listening experience.

Each person hears differently of course and while one can be totally transfixed by a performance, another is not touched at all. The reward that comes for the engrossed listener won’t be there on cue however.

They need to be receptive to what is before them. With some effort we can all become better listeners but having background music on around the house isn’t how to do it.

You need to give yourself to the experience. Take what for you is enjoyable music, put it through a good sound system, then sit down and truly listen to it.

As the mind wanders (which it will do) simply drop the thoughts and return your focus to the music.

Successful meditation allows the practitioner to move their attention from the noise in their mind to their being. There they are at one, free of reaction and flowing with life at the deepest level.

Some musicians (and, of course, practitioners of other art forms) are able to enter this deeper state through their art. Most can only aspire to it but it is an aspiration we can all live by.

Living - Arts Mural reflects Woodfordia’s future vision About 300 patrons from the Woodford Folk Festival community have lent a hand in creating the largest artwork in the festival’s history.

The 4.8 by 3.4 metre canvas was unveiled recently at an on-site working bee of 250 enthusiastic people and is the official poster for the 2019/20 Woodford Folk Festival.

The theme for the next three festivals is Imagining a beautiful future.

Festival general manager Amanda Jackes said the theme aimed to assist festival organisers in integrating the thousands of events across the festival.

“While we celebrate the festival’s diversity, we see the event as one canvas, many colours. We hope the poster reflects that,” she said.

Woodfordia’s artist in residence Gavin Ryan (pictured) is the man behind Woodford Folk Festival’s posters for the past ten years.

Previously Gavin’s creative process saw him holed up in his studio for months on end, pouring over hundreds of layers in large Photoshop files. This year, however, he has facilitated public mural

projects in Woodfordia’s outdoors.

Gavin believes that making the switch to a handmade, community-driven process resonates deeply with this year’s theme. What was once a solo mission has become the concerted effort of hundreds of hands.

During the 2019 planting festival and then at Woodfordia’s Parliament Day participants were given a brush, a thumb pot of acrylic paint and an invitation to express their creativity.

Each participant was briefed about the theme of the artwork and encouraged to think of a meaningful symbol or motif that, to them, expressed the theme.

Gavin said that the wildly detailed and lusciously complex poster that had been created by a multitude of different hands was a potent example of the total being more than the sum of its parts, which also summed up the Woodford Folk Festival.

Darren rises up

Glenview artist Darren Trebilco launched his latest solo exhibition Rise up at his Solitude Art Gallery last Friday night.

The opening night revealed for the first time more than 20 unseen artworks that tell the story of what the artist describes as “how love broke me open, unmade and made me”.

Darren said this body of work had emerged from the completely new energy, the new circumstances and the new world of becoming a dad.

“Fatherhood has forced me into my own rebirth.

Myself as a person and my art have changed from what we once were,” he said.

“The last 17 months have been the most amazing yet most intense time. A bubba that is not a fan of sleep has challenged me to move from painting 20 hours straight to catching snatches of time where I can.

“I have been driven to express the emotions that have moved through me - the joy, the awe, the frustration, the confusion, the exhaustion, the hope.

The total reordering of my world,” Darren said.

The exhibition runs until September 28 during gallery hours, Wednesday-Saturday 10am-5pm.

This image was taken at MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) in Hobart. The museum is cut into solid sandstone and some exhibition areas are connected by tunnels carved into the rock. The floor is polished concrete giving a reflection. To get this shot, Ian waited until there weren’t too many people and by then it was very dark so he put the

camera on the ground as he was almost at the limits of what could be taken without a tripod.

The settings were f2, 1/3 sec, 1000 ISO.

Maleny Art Direct will host the opening of the latest exhibition Raining cats and dogs on Saturday, September 14.

The exhibition showcases the work of a number of local artists including Emma Crosby and Shirley Marais and features Shirley’s and Emma’s beloved mates - cats and dogs in various media, mainly ceramic sculpture.

Shirley is an internationally recognised ceramic artist whose expressive use of colour and light on rough and smooth surfaces features in her sculptures. Her artwork is widely collected and nationally and internationally.

Emma's work has grown over the years from life size figurative work to abstract geometric forms.

Her love of line, colour and strong relief carving gives ancient influences mixed with a contemporary feel.

Hinterland Families Future firefighters in the making

Contributed by Rebecca Mackintosh The children of Beerwah Kindy loved the opportunity to spend time with the local Beerwah Fire Brigade recently.

The kindy children shared a lot of prior knowledge about the role of a fire fighter and were very proud to demonstrate their emergency evacuation drill as fire fighters Andy, Duncan and Elias watched on. Being able to view the fire engine up close, hear the siren and see the flashing flights are all highlights of this annual visit. However, all the children unanimously agreed that being about to squirt the water was by far the best part!

As part of National Science Week the Landsborough students incorporated the theme Destination Moon: more missions, more science into their class activities with a visit from Street Science, who performed their stage show ‘Mission Accepted…’.

The students enjoyed the spectacular show that used breath-taking demonstrations to delve into the dizzying details of space travel, communication and astronaut survival.

It was great to see all students truly engaged and excited to challenge their understanding of space exploration and cheer in celebration of science learning.

Peachester students play first, eat second Most parents are familiar with the frustration of filling a lunchbox with nutritious food only to have it returned half eaten at the end of the school day.

Peachester State School has listened to the feedback and decided to trial a ‘play first, eat second’ policy during term three.

It is known that after a period of sitting and learning, children naturally need to burn off stored up energy through play.

In the past this has meant that some children have rushed to finish their food so they don’t miss out on vital play time, resulting in food being thrown out, left in the yard or taken back home spoiled.

By adopting this new approach, it gives students time to play freely without being rushed.

It also creates a relaxed, social time to eat together as a class.

So far, the results have been very positive with many more lunchboxes being taken home empty – and many happy parents!

New director breathes new life into centre Glasshouse Early Education Centre is excited to introduce its new centre director Dee Shaw, who brings with her not only a strong background in early education but a love and enthusiasm for nurturing young minds in their early years.

Dee is a local and has been working in the early childhood industry since 1995, beginning her career as an assistant fresh out of high school.

Holding an Advanced Diploma in Children’s Services, Dee steps into her new role with Glasshouse Early Education Centre with more than ten years’ experience as a director, holding long-term tenures at previous centres, and while she may be a familiar face in the local region, she brings with her fresh ideas that she is excited to implement.

Having joined Queensland Child Care Service earlier this year, Dee says she is thrilled to be joining such a long standing and supportive company, and is eager to make a positive impact by encouraging and supporting the long-term staff within the centre.

“I love so much about my job, although the most rewarding aspect of my career in early childhood is having such a positive influence in a child’s first five years,” she said.

“This is a valuable time where children develop characteristics, understandings and beliefs that shape who they become as adults.”

The centre offers a wide variety of programs that cater for children from six weeks old through to pre-school age, with programs suited to each age group’s abilities and interests. The centre also offers holiday programs for school-aged children over the school holiday periods.

Eager to introduce the kids to the wonderful community of Glass House and surrounds, Dee is ready to introduce programs that connect the children with the local community, and also to continue their education on the importance of sustainability. Helping children learn about the planet and how they can take care of it is an integral aspect of Dee’s own philosophy.

Some of the programs the centre is proud to offer include their Bush Kids program, the ELLA initiative, a music program facilitated by Hey Dee Ho Educational Services and their healthy eating initiative.

Dee says she will be looking at revamping the programs in coming months, to help breathe new life into the centre and generate excitement for the kids.

Dee is also excited to introduce a new swimming program that will be up and running shortly. The program will be available for the kindergarten children, with weekly swimming lessons to be held at Swimfit Beerwah.

“It’s important that children are aware of water safety and have confidence in the water, which is why we are introducing the program at the centre,” Dee said.

“We want to be able to support our centre families by offering this as part of their child’s program.”

Glasshouse Early Education Centre provides outstanding care and education to our younger generations with support from long-term educators who are absolutely passionate about what they do.

After the outstanding success of last week’s Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival, I hope you’ve marked it in next year’s calendar. This year’s event was such a good showcase of what makes our country townships so special. The amazing group of long standing volunteers made sure the event was underpinned by local talents, service clubs and produce. There was something for everyone including equestrian, plants/ cakes, wrestling, show and shine cars (around 70 this year) and local producers offering fruits and vegetables.

Another great example of the Glasshouse Country hospitality was the Landsborough neighbourhood gathering held on a recent Sunday. A lovely mixed bunch of Landsborough locals came together to relax and socialise in the grounds of the Landsborough Hall. Landsborough locals should keep an eye out for the next one as there’s no better way to get to know each other. It takes a big effort to organise such an event, so well done to the volunteers!

Luckily there’s more to come! The Beerwah Street Party will take place on Friday, October 18. Held every second year, the 2019 party will take over Simpson Street this year. The event organiser, Celebrate Glasshouse Country Group, would love to have more volunteers (as would all the organisers) to help in the lead up, so get in touch and enjoy contributing to your local community. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Beerwah Aquatic Centre major makeover

As you’ve hopefully seen and heard, the Beerwah Aquatic Centre is having a major upgrade as we speak. The new 17m covered pool will complement the existing 10 lane, 25m heated pool, 12.5m therapy pool and toddler's area. A new, more logical entry from the carpark will also be constructed, along with a facelift for the Roberts Road façade and refurbished amenities. Remember, the pool is still open throughout the upgrade project and we can all look forward to being able to enjoy even better facilities when works are completed later in the year.

Preserving heritage

Council is proposing a planning scheme amendment to advance the protection and management of our local heritage places and character areas. The proposal, supported by your council’s cultural heritage levy, recommends over 50 new local heritage places and two new character areas.

Despite recommending the removal of a relatively small number from the existing list, the proposed amendment confirms the need to continue to protect the vast majority of the 200 plus heritage places and 13 character areas currently identified in the planning scheme. State Member for Caloundra Unsuspecting Beerwah continues to boom as a cultural hub

The Sunshine Coast hinterland is a place of diversity, with sweeping natural landscapes dotted by charming towns boasting their own unique identity.

But I fear many travellers coming to our region have an unfair and unfounded perception that hinterland destinations such as Landsborough and Beerwah are not destinations for culture or nightlife. While locals know this is simply untrue, these preconceived notions mean that many people are missing out on the rich experiences of food, music, art and culture that is thriving in our picturesque hinterland.

Venues such as Vianta Espresso & Wine Bar continue to challenge the stereotype of sleepy semi-rural towns and help to showcase hinterland culture and hospitality to visitors and to locals.

Having begun business as a standalone café five years ago, Vianta is now a vibrant espresso and wine bar featuring live music and an informal but sophisticated exhibition space for art work.

I recently spoke with owner Steve Moon about the evolution of Vianta and he said that it only took six months for Beerwah to reveal that it was ready for something more.

“I always had a dream of having a space where community connection is valued,” Mr Moon said.

“I envisioned a space where local artists could display work and musicians could come and play because music, art and community are an essence of being human. After opening our doors, it didn’t take long for me to see that Beerwah was ready for this. In fact, the community wanted and needed this growth.

“People who live in country towns often miss out on art, music and cultural diversity so I have been able to use the space within Vianta to give the community just that. There is so much passion in Beerwah for music and art. Not only are residents looking for entertainment but locals are looking for opportunities to play and showcase their work.

I am proud to say that 95% of the artists and musicians are locals.

“Vianta’s grand opening took place during the annual Celebrate Beerwah street party five years ago and I credit events like this as giving residents a reason to stay in town and enjoy what we have to offer.

“Beerwah’s identity is growing and evolving in a natural way that hasn’t been forced by any structured plan and as a business and community space we will continue to grow with it,” Mr Moon said.

Congratulations to Steve and the team at Vianta on what they have accomplished so far. I agree with the sentiment that towns need to be allowed to create their own identity.

Mix things up at the Lookout Café

I regularly go out for breakfast and lunch, and sometimes I can even manage to link them with a meeting and call them work. Over the years I have noticed that while the destinations vary, what hardly changes is what I order.

I am at my happiest when I check out a breakfast menu and see something that features avocado, sourdough toast and poached eggs.

At lunch time I generally go for a burger or nachos and I love my sweet potato fries.

So basically, if I can recognise a variation of these things on the menu I am happy and the Lookout Café always delivers.

However, what I also love about the Lookout Café is, well yes, the awesome view of Mount Coonowrin but also the amazing specials board, which always incorporates some seasonal delights.

At the moment they have some great choices that Brownie and I have tried and we can definitely give them the thumbs up.

The Beerwah CWA ladies were bowled over last week by the overwhelming response to their first Beerwah Scone Festival held in the grounds of their CWA rooms.

Country Women’s Association members are renowned for their delicious scones, topped with jam and cream, so once the word was out people from Burpengary, Brisbane and Buderim were all keen to check out what the Beerwah ladies were offering.

And while the traditional scone is hard to beat, especially when it is topped with the amazing Maleny Dairies cream, there was also plenty of interest in the ginger flavoured delight.

What's on in September Sat

The established farmers’ market is held on the first Saturday of each 07 month with a peaceful, festival feel in a permaculture eco-village in Conondale.

It is a favourite day out for locals and visitors with its sourdough bakery, organic produce, gourmet foods, children’s playground, arts and crafts, pre-loved items, alternative therapies in the natural, beautiful environment.

The next market is on this Saturday, September 7 and the costume theme for the day is pirates with the prize for best-dressed to be announced at 12.30pm.

There is an open mic session for musicians and between the live music sets children can sing a song on the stage microphone and everyone can enjoy the sing-along.

In the Garden New hope for your old hose Recently I wrote about recycling garden products and said that if the garden hose is passed its useby date, don’t put into your yellow lidded recycling bin, you need to dispose of it in the rubbish bin.

But there are other options.

If it’s just got a few holes, you can always cut them out and use hose joiners to make a whole (although slightly shorter) hose.

If it’s really passed it, you can reuse it for other purposes and here’s some ideas: Turn it into a soaker hose. Poke holes all along its length. Use an end cap fitting to block the end. Lay the hose down in a garden bed and it’ll act like a soaker hose.

Bucket handle grips. Cut short lengths, split the hose down one side and put it over the handle of a bucket. It’ll make carrying heavy items easier on your hands.

Make a basket. Coil the old hose, using cable ties to regularly secure the hose, until it’s a basket shape.

Tree protection. If you need to tie up a small tree to stabilise it, use a piece of hose over the wire or rope to protect the tree trunk from damage.

Edge and corner guards. Pieces of hose can be used on sharp corners of edges to protect you from harm around the backyard.

Make a garden sculpture. You can wind up the old hose into a ball shape to make a quirky garden sculpture. Let your imagination take you away. Or you can form an artistic looking mural of different hoses – flower shapes are easy and look great on a wall.

Protect your saw blades. Use a length of hose, slit it down one side and then use that as a cover to protect your saw blade.

Door mat. Coil up the house into a flat oval shape, to create a quirky door mat.

You’ll need a hot glue gun to secure the hose into shape as you go.

Make a garden chair. Using an old flat soaker hose, you can weave it onto an outdoor chair frame. You can do the same using a round hose but it’s not as comfortable to sit on.

Garden edging. Using short posts, weave the hose in and out of each to form a long woven garden edging.

Whatever you choose, reusing the old hose is a great way to keep it out of the waste stream for that bit longer.

Reduce, reuse, recycle … that’s the mantra.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Spoon-leaved sundew Drosera spatulata

Walking in wallum heathlands in spring is a feast for the eyes, with a multitude of wildflowers on display. However, remember to look down at your feet as some of the prizes are quite tiny.

The spoon-leaved sundew, sometimes called oblong-leaved sundew, is one of

these tiny treasures.

Named for its spoon-shaped red leaves, this minute insectivorous plant has a thick sticky substance, called mucilage, on its leaves. Insects landing here become stuck and the movement triggers the sundew to slowly roll up its leaf back to the stem, which releases digestive fluids to absorb the dead insect.

The spoon-leaved sundew grows in wet heathlands across eastern Australia, and also in Tasmania, New Zealand and South East Asia. Locally it can be found in Landsborough, on Ngungun, in the two scientific areas at Beerwah and on Tibrogargan.

From August to December, it produces tiny pink flowers on a long single stem that grows from the centre of the rosette of leaves. These flowers produce copious amounts of seed. Next time you are out searching for wildflowers, keep your eyes peeled for this small but fascinating plant.

With the roll-out of 5G technology and other forms of electromagnetic frequency wireless telecommunications, locals who are unsure what it all means and wanting to learn more about the technology can come along to an information forum being held at Maleny.

A similar forum held recently at the Glenview State School had more than 150 people attend.

The Maleny information session is being held in the verandah room of the Maleny Community Centre on Sunday, September 15 from 10am1pm.

One of the event organisers, Jim Straker, says that they have been able to source a number of excellent and well-informed presenters. “5G is now coming rapidly upon us and little information is being provided by government or telecommunications companies,� he said. “The presenters will be able to provide a very relevant story about this new proposed communications technology. “Their experience as members of government committees and information providing groups make them an ideal choice.�

A cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit will greet attendees from 9.30am, ready to start at 10am.

A donation of $10 will cover venue hire, refershments and cover fuel costs for presenters.

Isn’t it amazing the certain things in our lives and in our world that capture our attention? How much of your attention is consumed with other people? What they wear, where they go, who they talk too all seem necessary for us to have an opinion about. Social media, for all of its pluses, has also taught us, maybe even urges us, to share our opinion.

The Bible teaches us: [Proverbs 17] Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.

We can be all too quick to form an opinion and speak to others about others, and that’s not nice.

This type of gossip rarely lifts people. Instead it brings them down. We are called by God to lift others up and spur them onto good things.

How can we lift others? Pray for them, make room for them, be generous towards them.

Discover ways to be a blessing. The Bible tells us to think and speak well of others and to love them. When we do this we honour God through adhering to His word. God actually wants us to be others focused. To love others, be generous, gracious and forgiving causes us to flourish in life. His plan for our lives really is to help us live rich, full lives.

I love the thought that our lives are a gift to us and that we can be a gift to others. Be present, in the moment and care for one another, instead of using others as fuel for your gossip.

Sport Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Monday, August 26: Another fantastic day of bowls with 12 triples team taking the green for two games of 15 ends. Only two teams with two wins for the day with Eileen Pierce, Michael Frost and Warren Blackbourne two wins + 12 beating the team from Donnybrook also with two wins + 12 but lost on a count back by one end.

September 23 is the last Monday of bowls for 2019.

Tuesday, August 27: Division 3 ladies pennants semi-final at Toombul, Glasshouse vs Pine Rivers.

Well done to our ladies who won their semi against Pine Rivers 56-22. Lyn Griffiths, Noelene Annakin, Chloe Runge and Chris Freshwater won 23-14 while Di Hume, Viv James, Joy Reason and Chris Dougan won 33-8.

Thursday, August 29: Three bowl pairs was played with winners of the day Michael Frost and Warren Blackbourne with two wins + 34. Runner up winners of the losers with + 16 in the second game were Sally and Brian Squires. Lucky draw went to Don Teriney and Allan Pashby.

The division 3 ladies pennants final at Toombul vs Bribie Island with a massive congratulations to our ladies who beat Bribie Island in the final 3534. Needing two on the last end to draw, Chris Dougan managed three to win the game. Division 3 ladies winning pennant side who won the final against Bribie playing finals. In division 10 away to Sandgate our boys went down 39-33, which knocked us out of the race to play finals.

Division 11 away to Bribie Island was another tough game and our boys put up a good fight but went down overall 41-31. A tough first year in MBDBA pennants but we came very close in all divisions to make the finals. It was hard to keep similar teams every week as so many were away at different times throughout the year.

On Saturday, September 7 our club will host some of the men’s pennants finals from 12noon.

Please come down and watch. We will have players in divisions 3, 6 and 9 in what will be a great afternoon of bowls.

Our AGM will be held in the dining room of Club Glass House 9.30am on Saturday, September 14. Morning tea along with a free drink of your choice will be provided to those that attend the meeting.

Donna Manning lost 2-26 to John Olsen, Vince lost 8-26 to Brian Rudd and we went down 17–26 in the doubles. Congratulations to Noosa on a good result.

Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

Play days on the lawns at the bottom of the showground are 1pm for 1.30pm on Thursdays and Sundays.

Monday, August 26: A great monthly pairs with a full rink. Organiser Jim Weidman was very pleased with the continuing support shown by our new bowlers. This is a great way to meet district bowlers as well as enjoy bowls at a different level. The visitors took the spoils for the day. Congratulations to the Kilcoy team on their two wins and margins to be outright winners for the day.

Wednesday night saw some great bowls with the North Maleny boys seeming not to miss Ian Dicko, who is on holidays as his team moves to the top of the table. Word has it he could be on the bench on his return. Great to have Paul Kemp back from his travels. Ian and Mim Chatterton have started their holidays leaving the Outlaws a little light on for players.

This week see the monthly playoffs. Looking forward to see who steps up and makes the most of the finals format.

Whistlers played at Witta against Caloundra Hot Chillies. It was a bit windy but was a beautiful day. As usual we had long games but we all enjoyed the strong hitting. And it was a good win. Score was 44-20 games, 6-2 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Annie Quarmby.

The Wildcats travelled to Maroochydore to compete against the Mavericks. It was a beautiful day for tennis and Pauline Fraley, Stacey English, Jenie Riding and Sonia Douglas enjoyed a good win. Final score was 7-1 sets, 44-24 games.
