have been thinking a lot about age recently, probably because we have started working on a Senior’s feature for the next edition.

I must have been wondering who decided that 50 is the age when you become a ‘Senior’ and what were they thinking – 50 is still so young and vital!

I have now started hoping that with the pension being delayed 70 years of age, maybe we will also be able to delay the concept of ‘Seniors’ until at least 60?

So what got me being so anxious about my age (which let me say is closer to 50 than 40)? I was chatting to an old school friend yesterday who is a little older than I am and just likes to describe herself as forty something. She has even trained

her young primary school aged children that this is the only answer they are allowed to give in response to questions about her age.

Apparently they like to show off that they have the oldest mum in school, which must seem very cool to them!

I don’t think kids really understand the mystery of a woman’s age, as they like to refer to themselves as being almost six or seven and a quarter years old – they proudly claim every single month they can!

So here’s hoping that I will be inspired by their approach to life and stop deigning that I am almost middle aged!

Gordon tackles the trek to Everest Base Camp

When you think about the kind of person who might undertake a World Expeditions Everest Base Camp – does the image of an 83-year-old gentlemen from Peachester come to mind?

Well if you know Gordon Howitt, it won’t come as a surprise. Gordon’s proud daughter Dawn Clark contacted us recently to see if we would like to write a story. She hasn’t been able to confirm it, but they are researching to establish if Gordon might be the oldest person to successfully trek to the Everest base camp.

The company that organises the tour usually doesn’t take participants over 75-years-of-age, but once Gordon could provide details of his experience in mountains and a medical certificate to the company’s doctor in Britain, that problem was cleared.

Gordon and two of his other daughters Christine (52) from Perth and Karen (53) from Bribie Island travelled to Nepal’s capital Kathmandu in April to take on the 14 day trek to 5200 metres altitude and back. So the girls could keep an eye on their dad, one walked a metre ahead of him and one walked a metre behind.

Trekking is walking with no cars or trucks, and requirements are transported on a Sherpa’s back, on a yak or on horseback.

Gordon said that the biggest problem was a lack of oxygen at the 4,000 metre and over mark, with many of the other team members being affected. However Gordon believes that he was fine because he had never ever smoked a single cigarette in his life.

"We mostly had fine weather, and only on one afternoon did it snow and the frost the following morning saw the fly sheet above the tents freeze," said Gordon.

Sadly, the day they reached the base camp, was the same day that a large number of Sherpas were killed in an ice avalanche not too far above them.

Dawn describes Gordon as “a pretty fit old codger” who had always led a physically active life. However Gordon did point out to me that he has a metal right hip and his right lung only operates at 75% efficiency because of suffering tuberculosis as a teenager.

I asked Gordon if he ever had any doubt that he would be able to achieve it, and he looked at me questioningly and said, “no doubt at all.”

You hear about the confidence of the young – but after talking to Gordon I can see that the confidence of the experienced is something inspiring.

Electricians have been forced to wear the cost of replacing allegedly faulty solar devices produced by collapsed Sunshine Coast company Advancetech.

Liquidators were appointed to the solar and electrical distributor last week, just days after the Queensland Government recalled 27,000 devices that had been sold in Queensland and New South Wales.

If you purchased your solar system from a LOCAL then there is a very high chance that he, or the company, are still here. So if you have some of these faulty isolator switches then you can be very confident that your solar system will be fixed up in no time.

BUT, the cheaper price my brother paid, rather than buy from a LOCAL, has now back-fired. The OUT OF TOWN company HE bought from, because it was cheaper, has gone broke.

So my brother and thousands of other Aussie battlers who like to buy the cheapest – HAVE GOT JUST THAT! The Cheapest.

You are ON YOUR OWN – about half the solar resellers that were here for the boom and sold cheap systems, ARE NOW OUT OF BUSINESS – no double waiting for the next government subsidised product.

Please tell me dear readers, how can really good products be cheap?

An old friend told me years ago – everything costs money, better things cost more.

If you are a local and purchased your solar system from a local electrician or us, who are also locals, then even though it is costing us considerable money (we spent $60,000.00 on these switches), we now will be REPURCHASING new ones at our expense. Then we, like all your local electricians, have to provide the labour ($80 - $100 per hour) to replace these isolator switches.

Please be patient – and thank you for supporting your local electrician and us.

she has been part of the team at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club for the past six years, and for the past 15 months, has held the role of Club Manager.

With the sudden departure of the former manager, and with the club facing a tough financial future, the club’s Management Committee asked Kylie if she would take on the challenge.

Having plenty of enthusiasm for the task, and keen to lead the club in their recovery – she threw herself into the position and over the last couple of months has seen what the Management Committee are describing as a small but promising turn around.

Club President Ken Fullerton said the committee knew how important it was at that time to have someone who knew the club, and the community, and that would be able to garner the support required by everyone working together to secure the club’s future.

Ken said the level of commitment Kylie has given the job, while juggling all of her family responsibilities as a mum with three school-aged kids, had been outstanding.

“We really appreciate all that she has done over the whole time she has worked with us,” he said.

Kylie said the job had been tough, and definitely not your average Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 5.00pm job, but she has learned a lot from the experience.

“I have really enjoyed introducing new ideas, and creating events and expanding the number of functions at the club, but am now looking forward to getting a bit more balance back into my life, and being able to drop in for a meal with the family and just relax and enjoy the club,” she said.

Last week Kylie handed over the reins to new Manager Bruce Lange, who has been working in the Club industry for the best part of 20 years.

Seven of those years were with the Sunnybank Sports Club. At the time he went to the club it was a really small club and he was able to lead it into a period of significant growth and development.

Talking to Bruce, you definitely get the feeling that he’s keen to apply his strong business and marketing background to take the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club into their next phase of their recovery, and he can’t wait to make it happen.

He says that as a bloke he may not be able to offer “the feminie approach that Kylie did in the job,” but he also understands the importance of using the skills of everyone in the team to get the best results for the club.

Trucker with heart of gold

It’s not often you can say that you’ve met a true trucking legend, but last week I had the sheer pleasure of speaking with (and mostly listening to) John ‘The Ferret’ Moran.

John and his wife Margo are new residents to the Glasshouse Country region, moving to Beerburrum to a villa within Twin Cedars only six week ago.

The 82-year-old bush poet, performer, former truck driver (for 49 years) and tireless toiler for children’s charities was recently bestowed with the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in recognition for his almost 25 years of service to raising funds for disadvantaged children.

John started driving trucks in his early twenties and by the 1970’s had become a household name to nearly all truckers through his writings in the ‘Truckin’ Life’ magazine.

“I’m not a formally educated man, but seem to have a gift of writing in a way which connects with the average Australian.

“I wrote personality pieces about people in the trucking industry, as well as a very popular gossip style column. I had a bigger spy network than the CIA,” John laughingly said.

But it was his efforts over the last 25 years in raising much-needed funds for children’s charity organisations that has won John the hearts of many more than just Australia’s truckers.

John was the co-founder of the Convoy for Kids in Brisbane in 1989, and has been a driving force

“This has allowed us to financially help organisations such as Riding for the Disabled, Camp Quality, Careflight and numerous special schools and children’s hospitals.

“Last year I was the special guest at the convoy in Wollongong, which left me gob-smacked.

There were so many people involved, with cars, motorbikes and trucks forming a convoy kilometres long,” he said.

“And they raised over $1 million from just that one event. To think that I was involved in setting up the concept of organised trucking convoys being used to generate funds for charity – it’s just an incredibly humbling experience.”

John would especially like to thank the great efforts of the Lions Club movement.

“Lions have supported the Convoy of Kids in Brisbane and without them, it would not be possible to put it on,” he said.

Wife Margo and John 'The Ferret' Moran with his OAM behind it ever since, guiding it to grow into a major annual national fundraising institution.

“From modest beginnings and with a passion to see children given the opportunity for a better life, we’ve had over 240 convoys organised and raised over $8 million,” explained John.

Over the years, John has been recognised in many ways for his dedication to raising funds for kids. He is also the Patron for Riding for the Disabled, the Co-Patron (with Slim Dusty) of the Lights on the Hill Trucking Memorial at Gatton, has been inducted in to the National Road Transport Hall of Fame and received the People’s Choice award at the 2009 Tamworth Music Festival for his bush poetry.

“But to be honoured and recognised by my peers, my industry, my country and the Queen is such a wonderful feeling. It fills me with pride,” an emotional John said.

The developer behind the project, Andrew Tilt of Monkira Properties, stopped by for a chat and the opportunity to share his vision about the estate.

Previously the company had been involved mostly in townhouse development, in Beerwah, Gympie and Nambour.

However when he saw the land in Glass House Mountains he quickly saw the great potential for developing it into affordable housing blocks.

Andrew said while the Glass House Mountains township area has seen much growth in the past few years, it’s still retained its village atmosphere.

He could see that the town was still small enough to have kept its country feel, and that with the location so close to schools, trains and shopping areas, it could offer the lifestyle that young couples and families want.

“Our approach was to be able to do this development and be able to market the blocks under the $200,000 mark, making it affordable with the price of building a home to first home buyers,” Andrew said.

These days many young couples are struggling to make that first entry into the housing market, but Andrew believes that this development will give

them that opportunity and in a place that they will be happy to call home.

Stage 1 of the estate includes 43 blocks, with another 12 more in stage 2 and then in a couple of years’ time another 30 blocks will be developed.

By having the entry to the estate in Poole Road, with a landscaped pedestrian access onto Coonowrin Road, the estate will fit discretely into the town.

At this stage Andrew anticipates that the civil works will be completed in August, and the titles will be finalised in September / October at which time they will go onto the market.

Call to arms to end women’s cancer Did you know that one in three women will develop a form of cancer by age 85? A scary fact? If you are wondering about what you can do to change this, then you will want to support a couple of local teams who are planning to participate in the ‘2014 Brisbane Walk to End Women’s Cancers’.

This is no fun run but a hard core fundraiser which sees those participating in the 2-day, 60km walk through the streets of Brisbane.

The event is the largest walk for women’s cancers in QLD, having raised $3.5 million in 2013, and funds raised support women’s cancers research and clinical trials as well as treatment, care and prevention programs for all women’s cancers.

Two of the local teams have contacted GCNews to share their stories.

The Freedom Fighters, a team of two former Beerwah High Students – Angie Shultz and her sister Shannon Ind have been involved previously as volunteers and in local community groups.

They have a passion to help others and this year they have decided to participate in the walk as their way of giving back to the community.

Glass House Mountains local Sarah Greenhill, her dad David, along with her sister and brother-inlaw Rebecca and Adam Hennesy, and a friend Sandy Goulding, have formed another group, The Solos (Survivors of lost loved ones).

Rebecca and David did the event last year, and while acknowledging that it was one of the hardest things they have ever done, they found it

Every participant in this walk will have personally raised at least $2,000.00 to get to the start line, so we are talking about very dedicated people, who need your support to make it possible.

Both groups are working on a number of fundraising initiatives including The Trivia Night at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club.

The Committee and Members of the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club were saddened to learn of the recent death of Trustee and Foundation Member Barry Fullerton.

Barry has had a long association with the Sports Club and, particularly, the BeeGees Soccer Club.

Over the years Barry held a number of positions on the Soccer Club committee, including that of Treasurer, and was also a team coach. Barry was awarded Life Membership of BeeGees Soccer Club in 1984.

Barry was also a Foundation Member of the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club and was instrumental in helping to gather funds to enable the construction of the existing Sports Club building which opened in 1987.

He became a Trustee of the State Government Reserve for Sport and Recreation – today’s Sports Club grounds – over 30 years ago and was still

Black Swan School of Dance students Eilish Carney and Georgia Topp are light on their feet, but nothing could lift the two higher than receiving Honours in their Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing (CSTD) Ballet exam in May. Both girls were ecstatic with what they have accomplished and Miss Rebecca, principal and owner of Black Swan, said she couldn’t be any prouder of these two beautiful dancers. “They have shown great skill and determination,” she said.

Great skill that a little over a year ago Georgia Topp didn’t believe she had.

“I’ve only been taking classical ballet classes with Miss Rebecca for a year, she helped me realise my dream in dance and how far I could get,” she said.

Eilish, who attends numerous classes at the school, said there were many reasons why the girls chose Black Swan School of Dance.

“Miss Rebecca believes in every student who attends this school, she encourages us to achieve our very best whatever our dreams may be.

“The classes are small too, so we all receive individual attention. I love it!”

The girls still have a number of exams to sit before achieving their goal of becoming professional dancers but with the support of their families, friends and fellow dancers behind them they look forward to a bright future.

Women’s Social Group visit to Nungeena Recently the ladies from the Glasshouse Country Women’s Social Group had a outing to Toorbul, where we had a picnic on the water front. The day was a bit windy and rainy yet we still had a great time.

They would like to extend an invitation to local women who might be interested in coming along on their next outing to Nungeena Aboriginal Corporation for Women’s Business on Wednesday, June 11.

This a special meeting place for women, families and others who are interested in Aboriginal culture, and aims to support them through cultural awareness, education and hospitality.

It is a 16 acre property adjacent to Mt Beerwah and includes special birthing trees where Aboriginal women would journey to when it was time to have their babies.

The women recognised the significance of Mother Mountain (Mt Beerwah), and the trees are very special to the area.

The Women’s Social Group will be walking to these special trees and listening to a talk about Aboriginal people and their culture.

If you would like to join us, please meet at Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, Ryan Street opposite the Post Office at 12.10pm to carpool, or go directly to Nungeena, 60 Streek Road, Glass House Mountains to start by 12.30pm.

Peachester CWA

Contributed by Coral Beutel On Tuesday, May 20 we held a successful International Day, thanks to Jeff, Gordon and Rob for helping set up the Peachester Hall on the Monday.

Margaret Ferris did up the stage beautifully, with the centre piece a lovely painted tea towel done by our member Margaret Wallace, as well as creating the other Vietnam displays.

Thanks to all who helped, especially the Beerwah CWA girls who provided the delicious Vietnamese desserts while Peachester served the main course.

Contributed by Val Machin The Glasshouse Combined Probus Club’s May outing was to The Majestic Theatre in Pomona which was built in 1921 and has been promoted as the oldest authentic silent movie theatre in the world!

We watched the very funny Buster Keaton who starred in the movie called ‘College’. With music from the organ to set the scene and create the mood, we laughed our way through the story of intellectual Buster (Ronald) who followed Mary to College in an attempt to ‘win the girl’ from her athletic boyfriend Jeff. The boat race segment towards the end of the film had us all in stitches. And yes, in the end Ronald does get the girl. Great show.

We followed up our day with a lovely lunch at the historic Apollonian Hotel in the picturesque village of Boreen Point on the shores of Lake Cootharaba.

Northstar Jeep shines at Glass House It may seem a bit strange to have a near Brisbane car dealer launching their latest product in and around the Glass House Mountains.

And so it was to Managing Director of Northstar Chrysler Jeep Dodge and Northstar Fiat Alfa, Bob Aldons when Fiat Chrysler Australia approached the Redcliffe based multi award winning company to expand their dealership area north to Beerwah and Maleny and west to Kingaroy.

“We were a bit taken aback at first,” said Mr Aldons, “but once we analysed our sales history for those areas, it was apparent that we’d been selling cars into those areas for many years.”

“Our sales and service dealership at Morayfield is as close to this community as is the Sunshine Coast. “And we’re servicing customers who live in the Montville, Witta, Beerwah, Bribie Island and Nanango areas too.”

What seemed the most appropriate time to plan this change was when Former Origin Great, Steve Walters came to work for Northstar in late 2013.

The doors are open in Glasshouse Country

The chamber invited the tourism industry and the community to attend a forum to discuss the needs and aspirations for tourism in Glasshouse Country. The forum attracted a mix of 45 tourism and accommodation providers, accommodation users and organisations supporting tourism in Glasshouse Country.

The message was very clear, everyone wants to work together to attract the tourist dollar and send the visitors away with a memory of a special experience that they will share with their friends.

The forum was opened by addresses from industry representatives who spoke for five minutes, some of these were Keith Murray - Eco Lodge, Julie Cullen Sunshine Coast Destinations, Geoff Peters - Sunshine Coast Council and Bill Darby - Sunshine Coast Major Events and Richard Mainey – Campervan Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA). This set the scene for a robust discussion.

The final outcome was for the formation of a Glasshouse Country Tourism working group as a sub-committee of the chamber to promote local tourism and to take advantage of the local assets Glasshouse Country presents.

It is not too late to become involved. The minutes from this forum will be available at the Glass House Mountains VIC or call the chamber secretary on 5438 7221.

The chamber has been working with council on the consultation process on Halls Creek and Beerwah East investigation areas. A number of community forums are being convened by Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell leading up to a major forum in late June or July.

The release of the Sunshine Coast Plan 2014 left the chamber extremely disappointed. After a comprehensive submission to the draft plan, there was little change to support infill developments in the Glasshouse Country local area plans of any community. This does nothing to promote growth for local small business and produce local jobs. Glasshouse Country has the infrastructure now and this must be taken advantage of.

All is not lost however, as the review of the state government’s South East Queensland Regional Plan will still provide opportunities to rectify this short sighted vision for Glasshouse Country.

The Mayor and Cr Dickson referred to jobs and support of small business when launching the plan, it is now up to the whole community to convert this vision into real outcomes. The chamber is focused on strong local growth, local jobs and services for this. Community support is paramount for these outcomes.

with Sonia Clark While I am not what you would describe as a dog person, my sister has a small white fluffy dog. We describe it in this way as its actual bred is unclear, however she treats it like a child and it prefers to be carried around instead of having to go to the effort to walk. So after reading that LattE da Café at Landsborough is dog friendly – I thought I should let my sister know because it is very important that ‘the white fluffy’ is given as much social stimulus as possible.

I got chatting to James and Sandra at LattE da Café about their dog friendly status and they explained that they had lots of regular customers who visited them as much for their great coffee and tasty treats as well as because their dog could come along and enjoy the experience! The way it works is that dogs, that are well behaved and on leash, are welcome to dine out the front of the café and enjoy a little time out in the company of their owners!

The girls in the Glasshouse Country News office are partial to a takeaway lunch from Pasta d’Vine. It’s not just because they have great food – everyone seems to be able to find something they love on the menu.

Recently our group order included vietnamese spring roll, sushi, an open steak sandwich with crispy onion rings, fettuccine with meatballs, chicken quesadilla with guacamole and a gourmet roast pork sandwich. School News Vive La France

Year 7 and 8 French Students at Glasshouse Country Christian College recently enjoyed the production of a Vive La France performance.

Vive La France took a humorous look at some of the events and people that have come to typify France’s great culture.

The two actors kept the audience engaged throughout the performance. Students learned about the 100 year war and ‘Monsieur Guillotine’, who attempts to persuade the world of the effectiveness of his new punishment device.

The audience journeyed through the French Revolution, met historical icons like MarieAntoinette, Joan of Arc, Louis XVI and even delved into the heart of Napoleon’s short-man syndrome.

The actors used current songs to retell the story of these famous characters Joan of Arc led a in history hilarious performance but and even the five-o'clock shadow introduced didn't enhance 'her' the GCCC femininity students to the world of French art. The grand finale was set in the Moulin Rouge where several students assisted the actors in performing the can can. It was a hilarious ending to a very enjoyable and educational experience!

Peachester Cross Country

Contributed by Andrea Balcombe The District Cross Country event was held at St Michael’s Caboolture on May 19.

It was a perfect day for cross country running, overcast and cool. Plenty of parents and grandparents turned out to support the participants from five district schools.

With13 students from Peachester State School competing, we were real contenders for holding onto the Cross Country Trophy for yet another year.

It came down to the wire with only six points the difference.

Mt Kilcoy taking first place, Mt Mee second and Peachester triumphant in third place.

Prize winning sunflowers

On Tuesday, May 20, my Agricultural Science class took an adventure out to Gatton to the University of Queensland. We participated in the sunflower competition that we had been preparing for by growing our own sunflowers.

We each had to choose which way we wanted to look after our sunflowers and all ended up choosing to go for tall and large flower heads (in weight). We came home from the competition with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies. Group A, which was Flynn Mitchell and I, placed 1st and 2nd for both of our flowers and Group B (Madeline Kinsley and Taylor Olsen) were also winners, with Taylor’s sunflower head taking out 3rd place.

After all our hard work and a lot of effort, we came away from the competition with $225.00 to invest into our Green Valley Agricultural Science program. Overall, it was an exciting day and we got to see what different things can be done in Agriculture Studies.

A huge massive shout out to our amazing teachers Mrs Jade King and Mrs Nerida Allen!

Job creation the key I am sure we all agree that for the Sunshine Coast to grow and prosper, job creation is the key.

In my last column I mentioned initiatives to come out of the Budget that will assist local jobseekers including the Trade Support Loans and the Restart Programme.

In this edition, I wanted to highlight a very successful initiative that is helping locals gain employment at the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital site.

In a collaboration between the Federal Government, Sunshine Coast Council, Lend Lease and The Hornery Institute, The Work Shop has been created to support jobseekers and engage with on-site contractors to facilitate job placements and develop training opportunities.

With an estimated 1,800 jobs at the peak of construction, The Work Shop is helping to ensure that these local job opportunities are accessible.

Simpler Tax Returns From July 1, the Coalition Government will introduce new and simpler tax returns that will allow people to lodge their tax return through a smartphone, tablet or computer using their web browser.

Through the Government’s MyTax system millions of taxpayers without complex tax affairs will only need to review or change prefilled information before lodging their return.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will prefill tax returns with information provided by other organisations such as banks and employers.

Taxpayers will receive an SMS or email from the ATO advising that MyTax may be right for them.

Queensland’s heritage protected with review The future of the State’s heritage places will be canvassed in a discussion paper and Queenslanders are invited to have their say. This review aims to deliver real and ongoing benefits to Queensland communities by ensuring the management of these important places is not unnecessarily bound up in red tape. There are a number of improvements that could make it easier for owners of heritage listed properties, to assist them to protect and look after the existing sites. The Government wants to hear what the public has to say and we want to ensure our legislation is modern but also continues to protect our heritage places. Feedback from the public will directly shape the outcomes of this legislative review process. Have your say on motorcycle road rules

Road users can now have their say on possible road rule changes to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety affecting motorcycle riders.

The Motorcycle Discussion Paper will be live on the ‘Get Involved’ website for six weeks.

The Government wants to ensure the legislation is clear and that it reflects the reality of how motorcycle riders actually use our roads. There are three main points of discussion as part of the paper including lane filtering, rules on how a rider sits on a bike and helmet standards. Do you have a forgotten bond?

Did you know that the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) is holding $9.35 million in forgotten bonds which have accumulated over the past 25 years? The Government is calling on residential tenants and rental property owners to check if they are one of the almost 43,000 people who have forgotten to claim their bond refund. Under current laws any bond which has not been claimed for more than seven years may be reinvested into affordable housing for some of Queensland’s most vulnerable people. Tenants and landlords will however still retain their right to claim any forgotten bond, even after the seven year period has lapsed. Anyone who believes they may have forgotten bond can contact the RTA on 1300 366 311 or visit www.rta.qld.gov.au.

Dig deep and donate pyjamas to foster care children One can only imagine the thoughts that would go through a child’s mind who is suddenly placed into foster care. Luckily we have an army of unsung heroes out there who are dedicated carers and organisations who offer practical support. One is the Pyjama Foundation and I’m pleased to share this year I have partnered with them and offered my office as a collection point for their annual pyjama drive.

The drive aims to collect new pairs of pyjamas for children who go into foster care with next to nothing. The drive runs over June – July and here on the Sunshine Coast they need pyjamas for children aged five to18. Sadly, Department of Communities data shows in the North Coast region there were 1,098 children living in foster care, and 8,556 for the whole of Queensland for the year ending December 2013. A warm pair of pyjamas can provide a lot of comfort to these children and if you can, please dig deep, and donate a pair. My office is located at 1/118 Bulcock Street, Caloundra.

These were just some of the topics that were discussed at a community morning tea I recently held with members from community groups including Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce, Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed, Beerwah CWA and Mooloolah Valley Community Association.

This was a great opportunity to hear first-hand how local groups, businesses and residents are coping and what their needs and ideas are for the future. A number of issues were discussed including transport, population growth, the environment, retail, social networks, not-for-profit funding and local planning. Inspirational speaker

Thanks to the Zonta Club of the Blackall Range, some of us were fortunate to hear the inspirational speaker Dr Shannon Spriggs speak on domestic violence at the Maleny Community Centre on May 22. Her talk was followed by a panel discussion with speakers from various groups including the police.

While mostly women attended, it was fantastic to have men there who also shared their concerns.

While men can be victims, domestic violence is largely a problem of men’s violence against women.

In Australia, it is the leading cause of death and injury in women under 45. More than one woman is murdered by her current or former partner every week.

As Dr Spriggs said, “how have we gotten to the place where someone’s abusive behaviour has nothing to do with us?” She talked about the bystander effect. Bystanders sit on the fence, claim they want to be ‘neutral’ and do not want to get involved, even when the victim is a friend, a mate. But when we say nothing, when we try to pretend it isn’t happening, when we mind our own business, we become part of the problem.

As a community we need to stop enabling domestic violence. We also need to stop attitudes (that can lead to violence) such as reflected in how some men talk and joke about women; for example, a woman wearing a short skirt is ‘asking for it’ or a nagging wife needs ‘sorting out’.

Outraged resident

Recently myself and some members of the local community, rallied together outside of a well known local business in Beerwah, called ‘The Garage Sale Centre’, to find the doors locked and an eviction notice on the door.

Numerous attempts to contact the owner in regards to outstanding issues, in the past two weeks have been unsuccessful.

At a standstill we proceeded to contact Channel 7 News about the situation, who have aired two news stories in the hope of locating the business owners.

Further discussion with other locals revealed that along with me, they too were the victims of these business owners.

Many residents have paid for goods and have been waiting months for their delivery, others are owed money for furniture and household goods.

One local is owed a total of $1,750 for furniture on consignment, which has been sold and is no longer in the shop.

Many of these residents are single mothers and elderly pensioners that cannot afford this loss of money. All the customers I have talked to are just disgusted in this dishonesty.

The Garage Sale Centre owner’s husband also deals in buying and selling cars from their residential address.

I have given a total of $1,170 on a payment plan for a car which is not in my ownership, yet nor have I received any payment back for this vehicle after two months.

We are a small community and we want to bring these dishonest business owners to justice.

We are currently submitting formal complaints to The Office of Fair Trading as a collective group.

So out of touch

We truly have had some really inspirational leaders of this country, those being Gough Whitlam, Bob Hawke and Kevin Rudd to name a few. They had the attitude that they worked tirelessly for the people, for this country and God Bless the Country.

We now have a dictatorship of Newman and Abbott that are cutting education and health services so that the youth have no education and the elderly must die.

I feel it has gone past the general public to have a say. I think our only choice is to ask the commonwealth head of this country to take over.

We need to ask the Queen to intervene so that those that need education to bring this country forward can receive it and the elderly can advise those of the education needed to bring this country back into shape.

I never thought that the LNP was so out of touch as they are now.

Life is not easy one leader said but surely he didn't mean it was going to be this bad?

Allison Masters who was featured in GCNews in the May 21 edition, came into my life as a carer last August. There was an instant connection and we spent the next two hours laughing our heads off. Soon after this, she was having treatment for her cancer. But Ali is such a positive, vibrant woman, we've still got lots of laughter still to come.

We have a few things in common – while I suffer from MS some of my medications are for palliative care.

A doctor said to me, ''you're not going to die of anything else.'' Who says? I kind of prefer the thought of a fiery motorbike crash, or a parachute not opening. I just don't have the use by date stamped on my bum.

You're here for a good time, not a long time and I'll be proudly at the Caloundra Foreshore Fun Run on June 22. If somebody could make a trailer for my wheelchair in case Ali gets tired, that would be great.

RE: trucks please slow down

Truck drivers are not a protected species at all, they are men and women simply doing a job.

The trucks would be using Johnston Road and other local roads in Glass House as they are running in and out of quarries and other local business as per instructions from their bosses.

Quarries and construction (road) contractors usually tell the driver what route they are to take to make them efficient and the truck productive.

The road limit means nothing along Bowen Road if the drivers have been instructed to take that route, most of the load limits are set because of complaining locals who seem to think they own the road simply because they live along it. I bet if any locals wanted a pool or a shed built they would be ok with that truck using the road.

The Council, Transport and Police can't do anything if the drivers are not technically doing anything wrong.

A heavy vehicle always appears to be going faster than the speed limit due to its size and noise it makes.

If these drivers were speeding then they would be getting speeding fines on a daily basis which they

are clearly not getting and most new trucks are fitted with GPS and cameras which record their speed, driving habits etc and is downloaded as proof.

The state of Bowen Road and Crittenden Road has nothing to do with the current traffic as it has been bad and rough ever since I moved to this area six years ago.

The residents of Glass House Mountains and surrounding areas knew when they moved to the area that there were quarries and forestry here along with chook farms.

Everything in our lives involves a truck's involvement, including garbage, groceries, fuel, clothes etc. Without trucks Australia stops.

On Saturday, May 24 I said goodbye to a good friend and an icon of the Glass House Mountains, Barry Reginald Fullerton.

Barry was as much part of the Glass House Mountains as the pineapple farms that surround us. Barry and Judy were probably the first people I had met when I moved to the Glass House Mountains about 10 years ago.

In Barry I found a man with a big heart and a great friend. He gave me and my much-loved horses a home without which I and the children I teach to ride would not enjoy the freedom we have now.

I am sure that if Barry was unable to do a good turn for you, he would not do a bad one.

Barry fought a long illness for as long as he had the strength, but in the end he could fight no more.

Rest in peace my old mate. I for one will miss your friendship.

2014/15 Federal Budget Highlights We knew that the budget was going to have cutbacks and cost savings measures so we have summarised a few points. Please remember that the proposed changes need to be passed through parliament before they become law, so we can’t really consider what any measure will mean to an individual just yet.

Increased ‘tax’ for Higher Earners From 1 July 2014, a temporary budget repair levy of 2% will apply to an individual’s taxable income over $180,000 pa for three years.

As an indication if a person’s taxable income is $200,000 they will pay additional tax of $400.00.

Tax offsets and rebates The Dependent Spouse Offset will be abolished from 1 July 2014. This was only available for dependant spouses who earned limited income that were over the age of 60.

The Mature Aged Workers Offset will also be abolished from 1 July 2014 to be replaced by a scheme that provides $10,000 incentive to eligible businesses that employ people over the age of 50.

Superannuation The budget confirmed that the superannuation guarantee will increase to 9.5% as of 1 July 2014 in line with the 2012 legislation. However, the proposed schedule has changed to hold the rate at 9.5% for four years, followed by a 0.5% yearly rises up to 12% by 2022 / 23.

Welfare Crackdown Continues Previously people in receipt of centrelink pensions were able to take an income stream from their super (Allocated Pension, or Account Based Pension) with little or no income assessment by Centrelink under the income test. However it has been recently legislated to change this. So, from 1 January 2015, all new Super Pensions established from that date will be subject to the less favourable Deeming Rules.

The ‘new’ folk music

I recently discovered on Radio National the music of Sam Lee - an artist who has taken old British folk tunes such as the music of English Gypsy and Irish and Scottish Traveller communities, and given them a new lease of life with inspired arrangements.

What captivates me is that he retains the original singing styles with their rich vocal embellishments, but overlays them with contemporary folk accompaniment (influenced by jazz and contemporary classical styles).

Each song juxtaposes an assortment of instruments with the occasional electronic backing, and each opens with an instrumental flourish before the entry of Sam's mellifluous baritone singing the traditional folk song.

His voice is generally accompanied at first by a simple solo instrumental figure but the backing grows as each musician enters with a new part.

Above this Sam hovers or wanders, seemingly in his own musical world. The vocal art is timeless. As Sam notes, he searched out teachers and artists performing in these styles and listened to old recordings to hone his art.

I was interested to note that the album was mixed by John Wood whose work goes back to the Nick Drake recordings of the late 60s, so there is quite a heritage in evidence here.

Contemporary folk artists rarely take on the vocal mannerisms of the traditions on which they base their work to the extent that Sam has, but they do tend to make their arrangements and accompaniments a little more ‘within the tradition’. I hesitate to use that term, as the styles we anticipate for folk music today (of the Celtic tradition) have in most cases been grounded in the 1950s and 60s, rather than earlier centuries when the songs were often conceived.

None of it of course is right or wrong, good or bad, it is all part of the vital, inventive world in which the creative arts dwell. Long may the imagination of inspired artists drive creative expression and provide us with such a plethora of fascinating music!

Maleny Music Weekend

By Sonia Clark Coming up at the end of August is the Maleny Music Weekend to be held over three days at the Maleny show grounds. Running from Friday, August 29, until Sunday, August 31, this small and friendly festival features a diversity of local artists and talent with a relaxed folksy vibe.

As well as live music, also on offer is a variety of workshops and sessions plus a diverse mix of market stalls including ones that feature tantalising food and drinks. Camping is also available as an affordable option at the showground.

The festival organisers are keen to promote local and emerging Queensland talent and 2014 will mark the third year of this boutique festival. Originally the first Maleny Music Weekend was held in 2012 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Maleny Folk Festival (which has since evolved into the Woodford Folk festival). Organised by a collective of long term Maleny residents - many of whom were musicians / artists, the event has retained its relaxed ethos and this year’s festival promises to offer more of the inexpensive intimate festival vibe that people love.

The previous festivals have enjoyed an eclectic mix of talent with acts ranging from folk to funk and roots influences, gypsy and blues, poetry and comedy.

This years’ spring festival lineup includes both festival favourites along with exciting new talent. Stay tuned for more announcements, however the lineup to date includes Ange Takats and Band (winner folk singer / songwriter at 2013 Queensland Music awards), Barleyshakes, DVA, Karen Law, Kizuna, The Company, The Famous Jimmies, The Jar, The Unusual Suspects and Zikra.

Supported by the local community and businesses and with an aim to building a program with a core of acts chosen from the diverse and abundant Maleny / Sunshine Coast Hinterland scene, this event seeks to keep a connected community feel whilst offering something to appeal to everyone.

Ken Goodger Glasshouse Country Anglican Church Jesus said.. ‘Now you are sad, but I will see you again, and your hearts will be filled with gladness, the kind of gladness that no one can take away from you’ (John 16:22) I recently came across this story in a Mission magazine. A 13-year-old girl died of leukemia.

While going through her belongings, her parents found a poem she had written during her illness.

It confirmed in a beautiful way what Jesus says in the above reading from John’s gospel.

A portion of the poem reads, ‘O God I’m Free!....Your hand came through the dark, a faint spark; but it lit my soul. My fire is

burning, Lord. No one can put it out. O God, I’m Free’.

When we see similar situations in the communities in which we live, the girl’s story invites us all to pray.

‘O God, show us what we can do to help your hand come through the dark and light a spark in another’s life.’

One theologian wrote this, ‘Sometimes opportunity knocks, but most of the time it sneaks up on you and quietly steals away.’

May our challenge be that we take up the opportunities as they arise in our daily lives before they quietly disappear.

Dwarf spider oak (Grevillea leiophylla)

Grevillea leiophylla is one of the less common native grevilleas growing naturally in the Glass House Mountains and among Sunshine Coast wallum vegetation. Unlike most native grevilleas which grow to three or four metres, the dwarf spider oak rarely reaches more than one metre.

During spring and autumn it produces small pink to lilac, typical grevillea flowers, which are a rich nectar source for bees, birds and small possums.

In the bush this grevillea is usually a sprawling shrub rarely noticed until in flower. However if grown in an open sunny position, it can become more erect and sturdy. Look for this lovely small species in the Glass House Mountains National Parks, and it can be seen along the fire trail / walking track between the Beerburrum Soldiers Cemetery and the Trachyte Circuit.

Strawberries with Powdery Mildew

I just LOVE winter vegetable gardening! It’s the season where a truce is called between me and the pests and I get to enjoy eating my vegetables without the fear of added critter proteins.

Despite this very positive outlook, I have been struck with one issue that I normally associate with summer … Powdery Mildew! The cool nights, warm days and heavy dews have coincided and brought with it an outbreak on the strawberries.

Normally I only have encountered Powdery Mildew on my weaker, older vegetables, however, one whole row of young strawberries have fallen victim.

Intriguingly, the other four rows of strawberry plants (of different varieties) remain unaffected so far, indicating that the variety obviously plays a very important role.

Powdery Mildew is essentially a fungus that grows on the surface of leaves and sends feeding organs into the plants cellular wall to obtain nutrients.

Other than being unsightly, it also reduces the efficiency of the leaves and can adversely effect fruiting.

Whilst there are many chemical fungicides on the market, I’m taking the opportunity to test out the various recommended organic fungicides that you can make at home (an example is below).

Organic Pesticide and Fungicide

Bi-carb and Condy’s Crystals – Aphids, Slugs and Mildew One teaspoon of bicarb-soda into one litre of water. Add one litre of milk and a teaspoon of Condy’s Crystals (potassium permanganate).

Scientific studies indicate that potassium permanganate is effective in reducing fungal infections. The bicarbonate soda is known to alter the pH of the leaf environment preventing fungal spores from germinating; however it does not actually kill the fungus.

These are preventative measures and often will not cure the problem, so it would have been ideal to treat my strawberries prior to this latest powdery mildew outbreak.

Overall, the strawberries are looking great and are starting to produce some delicious strawberries thanks to the diligent care of my Agricultural Science students. It will be an interesting trial to see if these organic fungicide treatments are effective. Until next time in Get Up and Grow…

The Iona Challenge / Police Club Visit-In on Sunday afternoon was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by 38 bowlers. The overall score for the Challenge was Glasshouse Country 126 def Police Club 110. By Jenny Morris Unfortunately we weren’t successful in receiving the grant from Jupiters for upgrading of our lights. We are having a meeting soon to see what our options are.

A new trophy cabinet is now in our clubhouse which has two trophies donated by Fay Colthorpe (nee Muller) which she won in 1947 and 1948, an interesting piece of history to be preserved at our Tennis Club. Fay lived in Mooloolah and partnered Daphne Fancutt (nee Seeney) in the 1956 Wimbledon Ladies Doubles and were beaten in the final by Angela Buxton – No. 1 player for England and Althea Gibson who was No. 1 player for USA. We thank Fay for the privilege of displaying these cups which she won when she was 14 and 15 years of age.

I must thank Brad Miller and Franz Mens from the Glasshouse Country Mens Shed for making this cabinet to display the trophies.

Our Monday night tennis season is about to finish and two teams look like making the finals – Div 3 Mystics and Div 4 Vipers. Good luck in the finals. The Winter Season of the juniors is now under way.

We were able again to field four teams – Div 3 Magic – Div 4b Muppets – Div 4c Megastars and Div 4d Meerkatz. Good luck to all our junior players and enjoy your tennis.

Mooloolah Soccer Club

Contributed by Gus Gillespie The last day of Autumn, May 31, was very kind to Mooloolah, the imposing clouds kept away and allowed some great games to take place.

The U8 Pythons maintained their unbeaten record, even though they were up against a determined Mooloolah Red Bellies in a local and hard fought derby, eventually coming out on top 4-2. The U10 Vipers had a really tough game against Currimundi Orcas, with a few of the Mooloolah team sharing the same school as the Currimundi players there was a lot at stake. Mooloolah started well taking an early lead, however Currimundi showed their strength and determination to come back strong and taking a 2-1 lead into the break. The game was at loggerheads with the two sides evenly matched, but a burst of energy and skill soon saw Mooloolah grab a 3-2 lead, only for Currimundi to respond with an equaliser. With the game poised on a knife edge, Mooloolah had the break they were looking for and scored what proved to be the winner: a great and tense game played by two spirited and talented teams.

Finally, well done to the U12A Mooloolah Strikers, winning 9-0 to put them second on the A – Ladder, in this, their first season in the top division. www.gcnews.com.au

Contributed by Jenny Kelly This week the ladies had the pleasure of inviting the fellas along for an American Foursomes, which was played in glorious weather on Thursday. We had a great field of 104 players, who competed for trophies donated by Fay Barry and Peggy Broomhall. The best pairing on the day was our ladies President, Monica Dangerfield and Marshall Cauldwell, who blitzed the field with a score of 65 Nett. Runners up were husband and wife team of Angela and Andrew Roesseler on 70 Nett, with second runners up Graeme Black and Jen Kelly on 73 Nett. To add to their winnings, Monica and Marshall took out the NTPs on both number 2 and 18. Greg McGee and Karen Gannon were closest on the 5th and

the 16th went to Marg Hunkin and Meg Ferran.

The ball rundown went to 77 Nett. Thanks to all the ladies who baked up a storm for morning tea and our wonderful office and bar staff for the yummy lunch. We will be having another Men’s Invitation Day in August so make sure you tee up a partner.

All players and their family are welcome to come and support the teams in the finals on June 20, followed by the presentation and barbecue afterwards.

Hope that all the players are learning how to score and also to ball-boy for their matches, particularly in the older divisions, and not relying on parents or other adults to score for them.

Please make sure you turn up for your match before the start time, as the time given is when you start playing on court. If you organise a fill-in player make sure they know who they are playing, the time they are playing and the date this is going to happen. If you’re unable to get a fill-in player please contact Katya.

For those players that have not paid their season fees, they are due now. For the Glasshouse players who are not able to get to Landsborough to pay, please leave it in a sealed envelope with your name on it in the player’s box. You also need to fill in the form that is supplied in the box

Fishing family fun Grab your family and the rods, as the Landsborough Fishing Club Competition is on again and it promises to be a great local event that will appeal to the whole family. Running successfully for the last 10 years, the competition commences on Friday, June 20 at 4.00pm and runs until 10.00am Sunday, June 22.

With three categories for heaviest fish up for grabs (Bream, Whiting and Flathead) the event will be held at Hussey Creek, Beerburrum with four divisions for competitors : Men, Women’s and under 16’s Boys and Girls. All feature good cash prizes. Food and refreshments are available on site and for those wanting to make weekend of it, there is plenty of room to bring your swags and camp. Entry in the competition is $20.00 for adults and kids can enter for free. With great support from the local businesses, if you love to fish this could be the perfect event for you.
