ow, that's the only word I can really use to describe the weather and the atmosphere on Friday and Saturday at the Maleny Show!

Considering that this week marks the official start of Winter, it was hard to believe just how warm and sunny it actually was in Maleny.

And no rain! Apparently this was the first year in the last eight, that it hasn’t rained on the show holiday, and the first year in 18 that it hasn’t rained on either day.

So not surprisingly there were lots of locals who took advantage of the public holiday and came along on the Friday making it a record day for the Show Society.

We took a few hundred photos, and we have chosen the ‘Top 40’ or so for the centre pages, hope you enjoy them.

Local News Boobs on Bikes

Long term Hinterland locals and workmates, Jo Gripske and Wendy Ward have decided to make a difference by jumping on their bikes and raising funds and awareness for women’s cancers.

Drawing on their own love of motor bike riding and meeting new people, the two mums came up with the attention grabbing name ‘Boobs on Bikes.’

For the last couple of months they have been busy approaching local businesses and sponsors while planning a six month schedule of fundraising rides and events that will culminate in a massive three week motorcycle road trip from Glass House to Tasmania at the end of the year. Motivated after the loss of family members, as well as having close friends affected by women’s cancers, Jo and Wendy decided to do something positive and have put together a schedule of five events to assist in their goal to raise $10,000 for the Cancer Council.

Their first event will be a social road trip from Beerwah to Jandowae (near Chinchilla) over the weekend of June 27- 28. Anyone is welcome to ride along with the girls, though riders will have to arrange their own accommodation once they reach Jandowae. All they ask is a that riders

Their second event and primary fundraiser will be a cent auction and barbecue at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Clubs planned for Saturday, July 18. Already over 30 local businesses have gotten behind the campaign with heaps of prizes already secured for the evening event. Heading to the red centre Earlier this year GC&M News brought you a story about Andrew Prescott from Peachester, and his involvement in the local Black Dog Ride.

He is now preparing for his Ride to the Red Centre, which is an annual ride that commenced in 2010 after founder Steve Andrews rode around Australia solo in 2009 to raise awareness of depression and suicide prevention.

Since then Black Dog Ride has raised over $1.8 million for mental health services in the community such as Lifeline and Mental Health First Aid. This year’s ride will see in excess of 350 riders and pillions from all over Australia converge on Uluru on Friday, August 21. Queensland will have two groups leaving on Saturday, August 15.

One group will leave from Kurwongbah and the other from Townsville, merging at Mt Isa and continuing as one group to Uluru. Upon reaching Uluru riders will have covered between 3,100 and 3,500 kilometres.

All funds raised will go to local offices of Lifeline and Mental Health First Aid. Andrew said he first heard about Black Dog Ride when he was in Darwin. The more I learnt about it, the more I wanted to become involved, he said.

Unfortunately at that time there was no ride coordinator in Darwin so Andrew volunteered and co-ordinated the Ride to the Red Centre from Darwin in 2012 and 2013, as well as co-ordinating annual One Day Rides in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Peachester's Andrew Prescott looking forward to heading to the Red Centre on the Black Dog Ride “Since moving to Queensland I have maintained my involvement in Black Dog Ride and have participated in the Black Dog Ride around Australia in 2014 (run instead of the annual Ride to the Red Centre) and the One Day Ride this year,” Andrew said.

Becoming involved with Black Dog Ride has enabled Andrew to open up to others about his own struggles with depression and to assist and support others.

This year will be the third year he has participated in the Ride to the Red Centre.

Peachester NBN public meeting As reported in last week’s GC&M News, NBN would like to build a microwave broadband tower at Range Road, Peachester (see map).

This has come as a shock to locals who knew nothing about the proposal.

It seemed that the Peachester community may not be given the same courtesy as their Maleny neighbours to hear about – if any – health, environment, technology, legal, or aesthetic issues.

But late last week, a representative from NBN confirmed that a community information session

Armed robbery charges Police have charged a 30-year-old man from Glass House Mountains following the alleged armed robbery of a bottle shop last week.

It will be alleged the man entered the bottle shop on Bruce Parade in the Glass House Mountains at around 6.00pm and threatened a female staff member with a syringe, demanding money.

He then allegedly fled the business on foot with a sum of cash. Police located and arrested the man a short time later.

The man has been charged with assault, armed robbery and entering a premises with intent to commit an indictable offence.

Emergency housing conversation The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is holding a community conversation at 9.30am on Wednesday, June 17, regarding the need for emergency accommodation in the Hinterland. Although it may not be apparent to many in the community, the need for emergency accommodation is well known to volunteers in community and neighbourhood centres across the Hinterland and Sunshine Coast.

In response to this need, The Rotary Club of Maleny, and MNC, commissioned a research report into emergent housing needs and potential future trends for the Blackall Range and Hinterland areas of the Sunshine Coast.

Wayne Swan budget discussion in Glass House A full house of concerned citizens from the ‘Glass House Electorate’ packed the Woodford Bowls Club on Sunday, May 24 to hear former treasurer Wayne Swan unravel the spin surrounding the Abbott government’s second federal budget.

Mr Swan spoke for more than an hour, fielding questions and simplifying the often-complex issues of superannuation, the age pension, health spending and the nation’s fiscal outlook.

A lifetime champion of building a fairer society for Australians from all walks of life, Mr Swan explained that, despite the headline-grabbing cash splash for small businesses, this was a budget that still made massive cuts to health and education spending, still contains $100,000 university degrees, and still failed to deliver significant infrastructure spending.

Support group widens the net of support

New Glenview Playgroup

After three years of supporting men’s health in Glasshouse Country, it has become obvious there is a need to widen the net of support within this community. Prostate cancer is the focus of the support group at present, for men and their families. Prostate and other diseases come in so many forms and no one size fits all, nor, does one program of treatment lead to a cure. The initial diagnosis delivered by the doctor is significant, possible surgery, or treatment program, all have emotional consequences with a common thread.

The emotional trauma may vary, but the fear of the unknown is a constant. The PC Support Group at the gathering on June 10 will have local Psychologist, Elissa Jackson addressing the gathering on ‘Managing Trauma.’ Elissa’s address will cover relationships, cancer, PTSD and retrenchment from a job, but these are only a sample of the traumatic events that life can serve up.

A new community playgroup 'The Glenview Pups' will run at the Glenview State school every Wednesday morning from 9.00am – 11.00am during school terms.

The group has been set up by the school and is endorsed by Play Group Queensland.

Playgroup is a great way for babies and young children to experience a wide variety of fun experiences, make friends and develop new skills.

It is also a great avenue to get little ones and parents familiar with the school environment and can provide a pathway into the classroom ready for Prep year.

Glenview ‘Pups’ is fully funded by the school so there is no cost to families to attend, and morning tea is provided.

The mornings will usually feature a group activity or game, a craft session and story time.

Discover rug hook crafting at Beerwah Library Discover the beautiful traditional craft of making hooked and prodded rugs with Lansborough’s Judi Tompkins from Sunshine Coast Rug Crafters when she visits the Beerwah Library on Tuesday, June 16.

This traditional craft is slowly being revived and is quietly practised by a small number of women and a few men, who continue to teach the basic skills to others. Judi will provide a ‘hands on’ interactive demonstration and outline the history of this unique craft which came to Australia with the many convict women who were transported to this country.

Sunshine Coast Rug Crafters meets regularly at Beerwah Library. The demonstration will celebrate their contribution to the fundraising efforts of the Friends of the Library and will be followed by a raffle draw for their donated prizes – three beautiful rug hooking pieces with an ocean theme.

You can enter the draw to win a beautiful rug until June 16.

On July 29 the Events Centre at Caloundra will present a play that will warm your heart called ‘Head Full of Love’.

The play is based during the time for the Annual Alice Springs Beanie Festival, and Tilly Napuljari is running out of time to finish her new creation, and enter it for judging.

Nessa Tavistock, a Sydneysider, has run away to the Red Centre to escape her own problems back in the big smoke.

With time and talk, they realise that despite their differences in language, surroundings and upbringing, they are not so different after all. In making their beanie together, Tilly and Nessa’s stories become entwined and made into a thing of beauty - row by row, colour by colour, yarn by yarn.

The play invites you to look differently at the possibilities of the humble beanie: a much-loved everyday item, and an extension of ourselves and the everyday lives we wear.

To share this theme, the Events Centre is encouraging our community to create a beanie of their own, which can be part of exhibitions organised to coincide with the performance or to use for fundraising.

The Sunshine Girls, along with the Nungeena Women’s Corporation, have decided to host a beanie making morning on Tuesday, June 23 at their centre in Glass House Mountains, from 10.30am (gold coin donation).

The group meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, and like to welcome new members to come along and share in their casual cuppa and catch ups, as well as their outings. A couple of recent outings they’ve had were lunch at Rick’s Diner in Palmwoods and a picnic up at the Glasshouse Mountains Lookout.

In June they will be having a casual cuppa and a catch up on June 10 at the Neighbourhood Centre from 12.30pm - 2.30pm, please bring a plate to share and a $2.00 donation.

On June 24 there will be an outing to the Twinnes Pelican and Seabird Rescue centre for an Educational Tour of their facility. The cost is $10.00 and includes afternoon tea. All are welcome to come along, however you will need to rsvp by Wednesday, June 17 by phoning 5438 7000. The group will carpool from the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre at 12.15pm.

There there will be wool and patterns provided for those wanting to knit or crochet and some beanies that can be ‘blinged up’ to give them your personal touch.

Our meeting enjoyed a presentation from an RACQ lady who brought us up to scratch on our driving manners and our knowledge of the current road rules. Mid May we relaxed with a happy chat morning at Norma and Gordon’s home and this was a rewarding day with lots of chat and camaraderie. We’ve now introduced another activity, a Musical Morning led by Peter with a marvellous mix of Mozart, Jerome Kern, Bach and others, with his skill he makes them live. This, with our monthly outing to the Brisbane Museum and the Roma Street Parklands, along with our usual fortnightly Mah Jong afternoon gave us plenty to do. Dog Show Winners

Contributed by Helen Weil Our Sunshine Coast Kennel Club Shows on the weekend of May 16 and 17 were a huge success. The weather was kind, the judges were delighted, the exhibitors were happy, and there were lots of visitors who came along.

I even saw Ron, a Mooloolah resident who we often meet with his very much loved pet dog, on our morning Walking Group walks.

He was settled in (with his dog) under a gazebo enjoying the goings-on. Our patron, the vet Tom Duggan, dropped in for morning tea and a wander around the dogs.

All went very well. Photos of the Best in Show winners are the Dobermann Ch. Ebondobe Witches Promise on Saturday and the Pomeranian Ch. Pomquest Dare to Dream on Sunday. A great weekend for the ladies as the dogs were both bitches (and lovely ones at that!). Of course there were lots of other winners but these were the top ones.

The show was sponsored by Royal Canin, our many winners received bags of dog food as well as their prize money, and so many exhibitors went home very happy indeed.

Another milestone for Menshed Contributed by Bob McLean The Glasshouse Country Menshed is not only growing in membership, but their vegetable crop is coming along, and last Wednesday Cr. Rick officially opened the new community garden.

After moving into the new shed in August the job to get out and look for funding was a priority.

The first project was to establish a community garden.

The fellas were successful in receiving a council grant which funded four raised garden-beds, a water harvesting tank and irrigation system, and garden shed to house the tools you need to work the garden.

The men matched the council funds with labour and providing other skills to complete the project.

They also conducted a very successful garage sale early this year which allowed for some additional funds to go towards the garden.

Another garage sale is planned for August 15 at which the men will have lots of goodies for sale, including a range of wooden toys for you to order

for Christmas, as well as fresh produce from the new organic garden.

Any local blokes who would like to be a part of this great team, come and check out the shed at 352 Peachester Road Beerwah, on Wednesday from 8.30am to 12.30pm for a cuppa and a chat.

Thanks to Cr. Rick and council for the support given to the Menshed from the start up.

A special thanks also must go to Community Recycling Inc. with the support of Trish Cashin, managers, and the team at Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre who have helped since the Menshed started in 2009.

Amazing Pentecost service in Glasshouse Country Contributed by Chris Bell Red banners, balloons, candles and scarves decorated Glasshouse Country Uniting Church as the congregation wore red clothing to celebrate Pentecost Sunday with Pastor Margaret Niethe last week. Pentecost is when we remember the Holy Spirit coming as a rushing wind upon the disciples after Jesus' Ascension and the multicultural population hearing the disciples speaking in their own languages.

A re-enactment of this sensational event was brought to life with the help of Tigist Weston (from Ethiopia), Paia Ingram (Motu PNG) reading from Acts Chapter 2 in their native languages together with Rev Keith Ewin who read in Koina original Greek of the New Testament (now a dead language).

With the exceptionally heavy rain events in our part of the world in recent times, you may have had to bid farewell to sizable amounts of your soil as it disappeared down the creek.

Soil takes a long time to be created and can be lost in a moment, taking money with it down the drain.

But there are some easy steps that you can take to minimise the loss of this precious resource, and prevent the sedimentation of waterways.

On June 10 from 9.00am, SEQ Catchments will be hosting a half-day Saving Soil Seminar at the Beerwah Community Hall followed by a field visit to a nearby farm to discuss some positive projects and considerations.

Presenter Peter Armstrong, Catchment Management Officer with the Sunshine Coast Council, has a wealth of knowledge of erosion and sediment control on dirt roads, farms, creeks and building sites gathered over a lifetime of personal and formal land and water management.

At the morning seminar, Peter will take you through a very practical approach with five basic steps to save your soil: erosion management; sediment management; drainage; the right tools; and maintenance.

This event is part of the state-funded Healthy Country Program being delivered through SEQ Catchments to reduce the flow of nutrients and sediment to the Pumicestone Passage.

Whether you are a small landowner, commercial or hobby farmer, earthmover, builder, landscaper or gardener, there will be something to learn that will help your land from becoming liquid at this free seminar and field trip.

In the past, wetlands – or marshes, bogs, swamps, billabongs – were considered a nuisance, and more often than not, were drained or filled to allow agriculture or development to occur, or at least treated like rubbish dumps. Total wetland loss in Australia is close to 24 million hectares.

It is only in recent years that it was realised that wetlands provide huge benefits, and need to be protected, not trashed. They provide habitat and breeding areas for invertebrates, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish (including commercial fish species). They filter nutrients, sediments and pollutants from stormwater, and act as flood control.

Plants are crucial components of a healthy wetland. By capturing sediments and using nutrients, aquatic plants keep the waters clean and reduce the growth of nuisance algae. A buffer strip of planting around a wetland (preferably a minimum of 10-20 metre wide) filters runoff and ensures that banks are not compacted or trampled by stock or vehicles.

Edge plants, especially grasses, provide habitat for frogs and water birds, including Ibises and Herons, while emergent plants, which root in the sediment of shallow waters, provide nest sites for Swamp hens, Moorhens, and Grebes. Local emergent species include Cumbungi and Juncus.

Submerged plants, e.g. Eelgrass, provide a food source for native fauna, habitat for invertebrates, and also possess filtration capabilities. Floating leaved plants, including Duckweed and Water lilies, are a food resource for avian species. Our wetlands, and the multitude of life that depends on them, deserve our protection.

There are two categories: general tea cosies; and royal themed tea cosies – celebrating all things royal on the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Entry is only $1.00 per tea cosy, and you can enter as many as you like.

Monthly End of Financial Year Tips From Hinterland Accounting Services

A few suggestions so you can minimise your tax liability are: - Pay all Expenses before 30 June 2015 and bring forward/Prepay future costs now.

- Defer Issuing invoices until after 30 June 2015.

- Delay collecting outstanding income until after 1 July 2015.

- Capital Gains Tax is based on the signing date of the contract and not the settlement date, so consider deferring signing until after 30 June.

- Investment Property expenses can be paid for before 30 June. Ie Prepay Interest on loan, get those repairs done now, etc.

Federal Budget – What does it mean for you?

Well, it is a lot less controversial than other years, with no Superannuation changes as promised with the focus on promoting growth of small business. All the changes are at proposal stage and will need to be legislated.

The key proposed changes that may affect you are: • Small business tax rate cuts and small business accelerated depreciation changes.

• Changes to the Pension Assets Test Thresholds and rate to make the pension system more sustainable and boost the number of fully self-funded retirees.

• A childcare package, designed to help parents who want to work or work more.

Small Business Tax Rate Cuts The tax rate for small companies with an aggregated annual turnover of less than $2

million, will be cut by 1.5% down to 28.5%.

Small Business tax discounts of 5%, capped at $1,000, available to unincorporated business with an aggregated annual turnover of less than $2 million.

Small Business will also be able to immediately deduct assets costing less than $20,000 that are acquired from and installed until 30 June 2017.

Changes to Pension Asset Test thresholds and taper rate There will be an increase to asset test thresholds and taper rate for the pension. This means that if you have assets slightly above the lower thresholds you may receive an increase in pension payment. For those with higher levels of assets, you may receive a reduced rate of payment or down to nil.

Under this new rule it is estimated around 50,000 part pensioners will qualify for a full pension. Approximately 91,000 part pensioners will now no longer qualify for the pension and a further 235,000 will have their part pensions reduced.

No Jab No Pay Families will no longer be eligible for subsidised child care or FTB Part A end of year supplement unless their child is up to date with the immunisations (exemptions for medical reasons only).

Time to make property more affordable?

Applying for your first home loan is a big step, especially if you’ve spent years putting money aside as a deposit on your new property.

One of the biggest hurdles many people are facing at the moment is finding a property that’s within their budget - and it’s an issue policymakers are keen to address.

There’s been no shortage of discussion on the issue over recent months, as greater insight is given into the national property market.

Among the biggest studies was the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) Annual Report 2013-14, www.gcnews.com.au

which showed the role that overseas investors are playing in the market.

There had been some concerns that international parties were driving up property prices, but the report seemed to suggest this wasn’t the case.

FIRB revealed that the real estate sector received the highest amount of proposed investment over the course of the year, as foreign investors put their money into the construction industry. In fact, approvals increased from 12,025 in 2012-13 to 23,428 the following year.

Property Council of Australia Chief Executive Ken Morrison noted that overseas investment should be encouraged, as it’s opening up the market to anyone seeking first home buyer loans.

Mr Morrison continued: “Every newly constructed home that a foreign investor purchases enables up to four other homes to be built, so this boost is good news for affordability.

“The only way to improve housing affordability is to get more housing on the ground earlier, and foreign investment is making this happen.”

To any reader who has been with the same bank for their mortgage for any period of time, it might be time to re-evaluate your options.

Bowen Road, intersection

I was surprised by the negative comments made in relation to the Bowen Road, Steve Irwin Way intersection in GC&M News recently.

It is obvious the poor souls who believe that two sets of traffic lights so close together will be an inconvenience, it is obvious they don’t use this intersection daily.

The photo you published was perfectly timed.

It was taken after the revised line markings in the bus stop space to the south of this corner.

These had only been painted on the previous Saturday; this was after a commitment from Andrew Powell to address this visibility obstacle, and was to be rectified in October 2014.

Bowen Road is an interconnect between the Bruce Highway and Steve Irwin Way similar to Roys Road in Beerwah, so why should this be configured any differently?

For drivers trying to exit Bowen Road it is not

uncommon to be patient for up to eight minutes or more to be able to turn safely to go north or south. Last Friday morning at 6.50am I was stopped at the baulk line to turn right with safety, then a B Double and a school bus both stopped in the changed no-standing zone, with the hatch line marked traffic Island.

My vision to the south was completely blocked, I had no idea what traffic was coming from the south. There is only one other short term fix still required to make this corner a little safer. That is for the sign posts on the northern approach which has ‘No Standing’ signs, for the most southern sign post to have a new sign ‘Left Lane Must Exit’.

It’s a shame that both sets of traffic lights can’t be done at the same time, neither will be too soon.

Re: Be kinder to each other

I totally disagree with this letter. My husband Tony had dementia for eight years, if it hadn’t been for my fabulous neighbours, not one but many, and the people of Beerwah with their patience with him, including most of the shops and businesses and his carers from Oz Care and Glasshouse Country Care, I would never have managed. Then I got breast cancer, so he had to go into a dementia nursing home, my neighbours bless them and lots of people from Beerwah rallied and still are there for me. Beerwah is the friendliest town I have lived in.

The community all helped me, as sadly my husband passed away. Most people knew him around Beerwah, telling the same joke over and over again. As for the businesses they are great.

Also the empty shops are for the future growth, it’s what you call planning. Well done Beerwah.

Remember negativity breeds negativity.

The person who wrote the letter did not put a name to it, well I am. This person says be kinder to each other. I think they should look at some of the statements they have made. You cannot generalise, there is good and bad everywhere.

I do not need to go to church or read the bible to see good in most people. What a great town.

I was inspired the other day by the manager of the Fruit Shed (near nursery and cafe), Neil, for his integrity and passion for providing fresh, spray-free fruit and veg whilst supporting our local farmers, at a fair price for all.

We are so fortunate to live in one of Australia's best growing areas, yet it seems only a small portion of us actually eat much locally grown food; and instead support the supermarket giants to dominate the market.

We can do a lot for our local economy, environment and health, just by making choices to shop consciously at places that source and/or give back locally; like the fruit and veg shops on Steve Irwin Way and local IGA's. To those who already do, good on you!

Food labelling forum

Consumers have made it very clear that they want access to clearer and more useful information about the country of origin on food labels.

I believe any reform needs to be balanced so consumers can easily see where a product comes from without imposing excessive costs on Australian industry. On May 19 I held a very constructive consultation session with local business owners and industry groups to ensure that they had the opportunity to contribute feedback to the reforms. Consumers will be able to formally provide feedback upon the release of a community survey in June which I will publicise.

The National Stronger Regions Fund presents a great opportunity for our council and incorporated not-for-profit organisations to receive much needed funding towards priority capital infrastructure projects. Funding of between $20,000 and $10 million is available so if your community organisation has an infrastructure project in mind visit www.infrastructure.gov.au/nsrf and review the guidelines. Regional Development Australia (RDA) Sunshine Coast is also available to assist with your application. Applications close on July 31.

I have long been a very strong supporter of the work of Chaplains in our state schools. Earlier this year I participated in the Beerwah Chappy Bowls Day and have also recently made my annual ‘Great Walk’ along Maleny-Kenilworth Road to raise funds for Maleny and Conondale Chaplains.

Last week I attended the annual dinner in Caboolture that raises funds for 11 Chappies in the region including our very own Dorothea from Elimbah State School. These Chaplains play such a vital role in the care and development of our kids at school and they need our support wherever possible. Over the last few months I have been working with Kay Farrell of Sunshine Girls to support women living in rural areas, many of whom cannot stretch the household budget to include personal necessities and toiletries. As we know, farming in times of drought carries with it huge financial burden, and farming wives and mothers are the first to sacrifice their own needs for the needs of the farm and their families.

You can make a big difference to one of these women by donating a shoebox filled with a range of personal items, for as little as $10.00.

Items such as face and hand creams, shampoo and conditioner, sanitary items, nail files, talcum powder, or even beanies and scarves for winter are greatly needed.

Donations from community and special interest groups, businesses and individuals can be delivered to my office for distribution to rural women by Sunshine Girls. Special thanks to the Caloundra View Club, Caloundra Garden Club, Caloundra Happy Slimmers and Australian Pensioner Service League, for the boxes we have already received.

Give Me 5 for Kids

Every year thousands of children experience a range of illnesses, and sadly sometimes the illness is life threatening or terminal. Each year the Sunshine Coast donates generously to Mix FM’s Give Me 5 for Kids campaign, the money from which is donated to hospital paediatric wards throughout regional Australia to improve facilities and services to support sick children.

One of the campaign’s popular fundraising events is the annual Art Auction, which is supported and embraced by many of our talented local artists each year. This year the Auction will be held at Mercedes Benz, 65 Maroochy Boulevard, Maroochydore at 6.00pm, June 16. The entry is free and refreshments will be served. If you or someone you know would like to donate a piece of art to the Auction, you are welcome to bring it to my office, at 118 Bulcock Street, Caloundra, during office hours.

School News Cross country success

It was an exciting day at the Primary District Cross Country as Glasshouse Christian College won the title and trophy for the fifth year in a row.

The GCC team of 19 extremely fit Year 4 to 6 students used their nervous energy to help them start strongly in each race and gain 15 top 10 placings and enough points to win.

Ten students qualified for the Regional Cross Country HPE Teacher Wendy Stott, Jacob Championships and seven students Broderick, Declan Martin and won medals. Cassidy Ferris, Amity Nikolaus Webb after their race Roser and Declan Martin all won their races, to become District Champions.

The race that clinched the District Championship and caught the eye of the crowd was the 12-year-old boys’ race. It was a very proud 12 minutes for all GCC supporters as we watched our three boys dominate the race. Declan Martin ran straight to the front closely followed by Nikolaus Webb and Jacob Broderick. The boys stayed together for the entire race with no more than about 15 metres separating them at any stage.

Nearing the finish line Jacob Broderick made his move and overtook Nikolaus on his way to catch Declan. The boys had a sprint finish up the home straight with Declan holding off the challenge from Jacob to win by only one second! First, second and third to GCC! That result gave Glasshouse Christian College maximum points and enough to gain a convincing lead over Elimbah State School who had been only five points behind GCC before this race.

Glasshouse Christian College is very proud of this team who have trained hard and competed really well. The parents who supported the students were fantastic, encouraging every team member, and leading the cheering squad from the sidelines.

Students enjoy Chappy Week

Contributed by Kylie Merola Chappy Week was a busy week for students at Landsborough State School with a free dress day where students came to school dressed as their favourite sports activity or team. They paid a gold coin donation for the privilege of wearing free dress.

The next event was Chappy's Cupcake Stall, held during the school's Under 8's Day celebrations. There were some amazing cupcakes donated that were sold for $1.00 each.

The highlight of the week was a visit from the JC Action Sports team who set up a half pipe on the school oval and performed some amazing freestyle BMX stunts.

It was an action packed performance with a focus on the development of a positive well-being, self-esteem, social skills, decision making, good values and attitudes. Their message to students was that your actions today affect your future.

This message was also resonated in their challenge to students to be people of greatness by showing love, care and respect to all people no matter who they are, what culture they are, or how much money they have.

The sound of wind in the trees I live on a quiet farm, up the range in Peachester, high enough to see Mt Beerwah and ‘Old Crookneck’ in the distance.

Tonight the sky is clear and black and the mountains are just shadows.

Sometimes the lights of Caboolture and further away Brisbane, sit just below the skyline.

Tonight that part of the horizon is almost red. I marvel at the wonder that has made that.

Lifting my gaze, stars - forever, and they don’t just pinprick the sky here, they illuminate it.

It is a palette that soon begins to work on my imagination.

I travel back in time, not just to my distant ancestors for whom this same night sky told them so much, but to the source of light that I see from each star, which, unlike them, I know is millions upon millions of years old…

It is all too much so I bring myself back to this moment. And this night.

My house is half way up a hill and down below is thick bush in a gully that Crohamhurst Creek has cut making its way to the Stanley River which is on one boundary of the property here.

I can see a haze of mist, vapour-like rising out of it.

It lifts me back to the night sky and I can now make out a drifting cloud formation in front of the blackness.

It is cold I think, but I am not aware of it.

Through all this stillness, silence appears to dominate and starts to hold my attention.

But I listen carefully and there are crickets and the breeze in distant trees and the sound of the running creek or maybe it’s the river.

A trickle of water drips, or in its world plummets from a gutter to the ground underneath, and a stick cracks in the paddock off to the side.

Then I notice my heart beat and after a while it starts to pound in my ears…

Whispered shadows

By Sonia Clark A very special concert event is happening at Witta this month with vocal artist and Shakuhachi (bamboo flute) player Anne Norman performing on Sunday, June 14. Anne is a passionate advocate of the Shakuhachi, and the concert will feature 300 year old flute meditations from Japan, music inspired from previous performances in France, and moments of poetic and sonic wanderings during a creative residency on Flinders Island in 2014.

Following studies in classical flute, in 1986 Anne took up learning the skills involved in playing this deeply moving and evocative sounding instrument, and has studied at the Tokyo University of Arts.

The concert ‘Whispered Shadows’ is billed as a slow unfolding of spell binding music: bamboo flute meditations, along with improvisations, poems and original compositions.

Anne has recorded several CD’s and has performed around the world including concerts in Europe, Japan and America. Her music incorporates a variety of styles and she enjoys collaborative music making. Anne will be performing along with Michael Whiticker and the performance will be sure to stir emotions.

The concert will be held as an outdoor picnic event at 48 Curramore Road, Witta so bring your folding chairs, picnic rug, thermos etc.

Great eats and treats to find locally!

The Mailbox Cafe This month Lea and I dropped into the Mailbox Cafe for lunch. Situated in a renovated building that was originally the North Pine Post and Telegraph Office, the cafe is spacious yet warmly inviting with heaps of sofas, local artwork and a verandah.

With a cosy relaxed feel that complements the wholesome quality of the home made food, the cafe is open from 5.00am until 5.00pm, seven days a week, and is well placed to cater to early morning commuters and tradies, lunching locals and visitors to the Hinterland.

The menu was great; with a comprehensive selection of items that looked like it would cater well to all appetites including heaps of options for breakfast. When we arrived we were both

spoilt for choice. As well as the porterhouse steak, chicken parmigiana, lasagne and fish options, there was a great selection of burgers, gourmet sandwiches, wraps and rolls, and I was impressed with the range of vegetarian options. The glass display cabinet was packed with some of the heartiest and well priced club sandwiches I’ve seen, along with a tasty selection of individual pizzas and quiches.

There was also a mouth watering display of well priced home made sweet treats that proved extremely tempting.

Lea ordered the Chicken Burger which looked filling, with chicken breast, bacon, swiss cheese, avocado, tomato, lettuce and chips and I went for an individual Vegetarian Pizza which was stacked with mushroom, zucchini, cherry tomato, red

onion, shallots, olives, spinach, seeded mustard and cheese. Lunch looked great and tasted awesome.

Normally I order coffee, and the Natural Bean artisan roasted brew caught my eye, but for variety I ordered a fresh ‘cleanse’ juice packed with the freshest good stuff like apple, spinach, cucumber and lemon and ginger and served in a mason jar – it defiantly made me feel healthier and put a zing in my step.

We were there on a work day so on a time budget, but I could imagine that it would be a great place to come back to with visitors or friends so you could really take the time to enjoy the dining experience.

I’d like to grow some camellias. What are some tips so that I don’t kill them?

Barbara, Mt Mellum Hi Barbara - to start with, go with a Japonica camellia – they’re attractive and hardier. Choose a darker flowering variety – they are more resistant to sun and wind damage. Ensure the soil isn’t limed and has a pH a little on the acid side of neutral. They prefer dappled shade under taller trees and shelter from harsh winds.

If the soil stays wet, grow them on raised mounds to prevent root rot problems – good drainage is paramount. Mulch around them well and apply a camellia fertiliser after flowering (end of winter).

Sunshine Coast hibiscus spectacular Beatrice Gersch of Caloundra must know a thing or two about her Hibiscus, as she recently won the Grand Champion Hibiscus Bloom with her Golden Empress as well as taking out the Champion Single Hibiscus Bloom.

This is the second year in a row that Beatrice has won at the show hosted by the Sunshine Coast Branch of the Australian Hibiscus Society.

Minden’s Geoff Frohloff won the Royal Queensland Show’s (Ekka) Giant Pumpkin Competition in Ipswich last week with a 261kg whopper – smashing Ekka records for the second year in a row.

His heavyweight entry weighed in at more than a quarter of tonne, breaking the previous show record of 204kg (2014) by a massive 57.5kg, to be crowned the 2015 Champion Heaviest Pumpkin of Show.

Geoff’s second entry in the competition tipped the scales at an extraordinary 207kg ensuring his dominance in this coveted Ekka competition continues.

According to Geoff, the secret to success is planting in brand new soil, plenty of tender loving care for the four month growing cycle, and his secret organic mulch recipe.

“I’ve been growing them for 28 years and they don’t like high humidity; 26 degrees is the ideal temperature for them,’’ he said.

Geoff’s record breaking entry is even more impressive considering entries for the competition were down due to a poor growing season with some crops being washed out.

The competition, sponsored by Pillow Talk, marks the countdown to Ekka with just 90 days to go before the gates open.

RNA Chief Executive Brendan Christou said the giant pumpkin competition was one of the show’s most iconic events.

“The heart and soul of the Ekka is all about celebrating and showcasing agriculture and this competition does just that,’’ he said.

“Horticulture dates back to our first show in 1876 and it’s important our growers are rewarded and recognised for producing the best of the best.

“The entries have taken months to grow and it’s wonderful to see the next generation of growers here today such as 13-year-old Angela Kalkaus who won the Youth Division with a 64kg entry.”

Is anyone listening?

Just a few weeks ago my wife and I were in Kaohsiung in Taiwan; the other China. We heard there was an English-speaking church being opened that day. So we took a cab from the ship to a bustling street in this second city of Taiwan.

Three floors up by elevator we were welcomed warmly and then found seats for the morning.

As overseas guests, two of us were asked to participate. My friend Laurie of Glass House Mountains prayed for this new church; and later dedicated a new baby. I am sure the parents, and the baby, had no idea what he was saying as their mother tongue was Mandarin. But they were thrilled. Then I was asked to talk about Australia. So, apart from kangaroos and koalas, the talk moved to the reach of the church in this country. And how I had told thousands around the world I would be there that day

on my weekly Bible lesson podcast on the Internet. They seemed pleased to hear that I had mentioned them ahead of time. Many attendees were university students from other countries: African, South East Asian, Caribbean, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Imagine my surprise when talking with them at lunch to learn that the PNG and Solomon Islanders were all on scholarships to study medicine and dentistry in Taiwan. My previous work had me spending large amounts of time in both countries. We eventually were able to find people we mutually knew. Some were even related to doctors I had worked with in the Solomon's. Suddenly we were best of friends! I will remember that day for a long time. Even in a distant country, most unexpectedly, there were Christian connections which brought this old guy close to some young people thousands of kilometres from their homes.

Too soon it was time for a taxi back to the ship.

And the Bible lesson; last week I received a card from Ida in Wollongong in NSW. "Thank you for telling about your trip beforehand." I hope she wasn't the only one listening!

On May 24, 12 Ngungun juniors took part in the Weetbix TRYathlon at Kawana, Stockland Park.

A great day for the club with so many smiling faces and enthusiastic racers! he Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon events were held in 13 event locations across Australia, between January and May, with thousands of Aussie kids joining the anticipated 40,000 who will be taking part in the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon Trans-Tasman World Record attempt. The juniors were cheered all the way to the finish line by sporting superstars Stephanie Gilmore, Triathlete Pete Jacobs, and Emma Seebohm. Every single athlete did an awesome job and received an official Weet-Bix Kids TRY gold medal and T-Shirt. Seven of the club's adults members gave up their Sunday morning to become official volunteers on the day.

by Friday. Semi-final matches are as follows – Playing at the Glasshouse Sports club at 3.30pm is Div 3 / Peewee, and at 4.30pm it will be Division 1 & Division 2. At the Glasshouse State school at 3.30pm it will be continuous tennis.

The finals which are on Friday, June 12, will all be held at the Glasshouse Sports Club and all players need to be there by 3.30pm. All players and families are welcome to come and support teams and players, and enjoy the presentation and breakup afterwards, which will include some fun and games. Competition for supremacy Tyson, Aaron and Rueben at the Gold Coast Open Students from the San Training Centre Taekwondo Team competed in the Gold Coast open last weekend - one of the biggest competitions on the Australian calendar. It was attended by 444 fighters with every state represented, and international teams from USA, PNG, New Zealand, Samoa and the Philippines.

The team of seven came home with three gold, one silver and four bronze medals, a great result for this high level event.

Aaron Lerch beat a local fighter from Caboolture in the first round before losing to NSW in the final to finish with silver. David McDonald from Conondale, coached by older brother Leo, beat Victoria to win gold. Rueben Tidy fought well in two divisions winning gold in one, and finishing with a bronze in another.

Tyson Ratcliff also fought well but lost to a more experienced local competitor to take bronze.

Siena Cameron lost against NSW in a tough fight for a bronze.

San Instructor Cameron Taylor won gold in his division after beating Victoria in the first round then overtaking South Australia in the last three seconds of the final, for a thrilling win. Kasia Bartnikowska lost in a close fight to a member of the PNG national team who went on to win the gold. The team is now preparing for the Caboolture open, then black belts will go on to the Australian open in late June in Melbourne with over 30 countries expected to compete.

Coaches are happy to see students progressing though from our junior programs with kids as young as three just having a great time, moving through the different levels up to our elite level high-performance classes, and strength and conditioning programs.

Classes are at Beerwah, Maleny and Kenilworth.

Trying brings smiles

Contributed by Andrea Balcombe The two sports houses of Peachester State School, Stanley and Coochin, again competed for supremacy on the sports field last Friday at Skippy Park, Landsborough.

The long distance races were first on the program and the older children took on running 800 metres around the track while the younger ones cheered them on. Some personal bests were achieved and district representatives established.

The Preps, Year 1's and Year 2's split into mixed age groupings and rotated through a series of fun ball throwing and catching activities with much on field parental encouragement, while the older grades took on the long jump and the intricate art of shot put.

After lunch, short distance sprints and relay running for all the ages was run and timed, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed positions received a ribbon. The day closed with a riotous relay, seniors against a parent’s team. Everyone had a terrific day of fun and skill enhancement.

Credit to the small team of dedicated teachers who organised a great Sports Day and to the enthusiastic, supportive parents who attended.

Mother-in-law trouble Bob, a hunter, went on camping trip with his wife, kids, and mother-in-law. One evening, while still deep in the forest, the Mrs awoke to find her mother gone. Rushing to her husband, she insisted on them both trying to find her mother.

Bob picked up his rifle, took a swig of whiskey, and started to look for her. In a clearing not far from the camp, they came upon a chilling sight.

The mother-in-law was backed up against a thick, impenetrable bush, and a large bear stood facing her. The wife cried, "what are we going to do?"
