ell, I have to say I totally love having a public holiday in October – what a great idea! It is a strange thing, as in our business having a public holiday just means we have to fit an extra day’s work into the previous week. Apparently producing just 80% of a paper because we are all having a public holiday doesn’t really cut it with our readers.

What always surprises me is that somehow the excitement attached to having a public holiday makes us all move up a notch to get everything done. For me, that translates into getting up at 4.00am on Wednesday and Thursday morning to knock out a couple of extra stories when my brain is at its freshest!

Well, this is what I am telling myself – I do my best work in the early hours of the morning, while wearing my pyjamas (which you can definitely only do when you are working from home!).

Fortunately for me, I haven’t felt too alone working at this time because we have two families of kookaburras who are currently engaged in a ‘turf war’ in our backyard, as well as a highly industrious (well noisy) bush turkey who is making a nest in our front yard.

So, as well as the anticipation of a public holiday this week, I have also been able to get back in touch with my part of the world pre sunrise.

Trade show shares tourism information Volunteers from the Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre were part of a group of 100 volunteers who participated recently in the Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL) trade show held at the Lake Kawana Community Centre.

The trade show was designed as an opportunity for local operators to meet with some of the new Visitor Information Centre (VIC) staff and volunteers and, in turn, for the staff to learn of any new product updates from the tourism industry.

SCDL CEO Steve Cooper said a trade show event on this scale had never been staged for the staff and volunteers in the past.

“This marketing initiative connects Visitor Information Centre staff with local tourism products and services in the one place at the one time, in order to better service our region and visitors,’’ he said.

Knitting group winners Karen Croke from the Glass House Mountains has won a $5,000 grant for her community group Knitting for Brisbane's Needy in the August round of ‘Sunsuper Dreams for a Better World’ competition.

Karen started Knitting for Brisbane's Needy in 2006 with two other friends. The group knits clothing to provide to the less fortunate, including the homeless, premature babies, animal refugees, and crisis centres for women and children.

Three members of Knitting for Brisbane’s Needy with some of their donations

Over the past seven years the group, which operates with no funding, has continued to grow and they now have hundreds of members all over South East Queensland.

Their members meet weekly or monthly in groups called ‘Knit and Natters’ to knit, crochet, natter and laugh.

Knitting for Brisbane’s Needy has made over 120,000 items including blankets, beanies, scarves, jumpers and toys that have been sent all over Queensland and, in times of tragedy, to other parts of Australia as well.

"We were so excited to win a bonus grant in the ‘Sunsuper Dreams for a Better World’ competition," Karen said.

"Normally my husband and I pay for most of the wool to knit with and the postage to send the clothing around Queensland, and use our house to store all the items.

“This $5,000 Sunsuper grant is going to go a long way to helping us cover wool and postage costs.

“For me, the look on people’s faces when we give them an item, whether it’s a blanket, scarf or toy for a child, which has been personally knitted for them, makes everything we do worthwhile!” www.gcnews.com.au

The Koala Brothers A perfect day for Murray and Ray Chambers would ideally not involve rescuing a sick or injured koala. It’s not that the brothers don’t love the native marsupial; in fact, they have poured their hearts and their livelihoods into rescuing them. But if their phone isn’t ringing, the pair can concentrate on their other passion, which is educating the next generation of leaders and landholders about how to save this now vulnerable animal.

Murray and Ray’s name has become synonymous with koalas on the Sunshine Coast. Nearly four years ago, they set up the Sunshine Coast Koala Wildlife Rescue Service, a 24/7 rescue service that covers a large area of Queensland’s south east. Since then, a third member, Angie Duncan, has come on board to help out. Ray and Murray are also on a roster with the Moreton Bay Rescue Service, so it’s a rare opportunity to catch them both in the same room at the same time.

This is particularly so given that when they’re not rescuing koalas, educating students and community groups or planting trees, the pair are trying to make a living through their motor vehicle mechanical business, WB Motors, in Moffat Beach.

“The business is our livelihood, but we barely make enough to cover costs, because we’re hardly ever here,” Murray said.

“We can be called out any time of the day or night to rescue a koala, or relocate them back into the wild after their recuperation.”

Murray, left, and Ray, seated, are determined to give their all to fight for a brighter future for koalas “Anything we make is used to fund the rescue service, to keep our rescue vehicle on the road, and because we’re only registered as a charity, and not incorporated, we can’t get any grants for the work we do.”

Ray said the whole mindset of governments needed to change if there was any chance for koala populations to increase.

“Their homes are being destroyed by urban sprawl, and yet successive governments have done nothing to stop it,” Ray said.

“It’s obvious there’s no money in protecting our native wildlife, and so we have no choice but to keep doing what we are doing, for as long as we can.”

The brothers, who share a lifelong, passionate love of Australian native animals, have reluctantly accepted the role of koala crusaders, in the hope of making a difference before it is too late.

“Five years from now, and it will be too late,” Murray said.

With hundreds of volunteer positions that need filling every month across the Sunshine Coast, Volunteering Sunshine Coast connects people wanting to put their time and skills to use, with suitable, not-for-profit and charity organisations.

Volunteers Sunshine Coast began in 2003, aligning themselves with over 150 community organisations who found it difficult finding helping hands. Co-founder and manager Cheryl Harris said she is amazed at the diversity of the organisations and volunteers she assists, stretching from Caboolture to Gympie.

Cheryl insists every person has something to offer: "I have never met a volunteer who wasn't able to assist an organisation. People surprise themselves more often than not at how many skills they truly have during our interview process. We would love to see more young volunteers, especially those in their final years in high school who will soon be looking to join the workforce. Volunteering is looked upon favourably by potential employers.

"There are regularly positions for drivers who can take the elderly to doctor's appointments, basic receptionist roles which don't always require computer skills, animal carers, in-school assistance with children learning to read – and so many other rewarding positions we update weekly on our website.

“Volunteering a couple of hours a week, a month, or each year, is rewarding on so many levels and amounts to more than most people would ever donate if it were converted to cash.”

Dail Malins from Parrots in Paradise in Glass House Mountains, is just one of the beneficiaries of the work provided by volunteers.

Dail says "our volunteers range in age from 12 to their 80s and the help we receive from them allows us to maintain the cages. They help with cleaning – some people just come to learn more about birds. It might not seem like much to some, but without our volunteers, we would struggle to do it alone."

Volunteering Sunshine Coast is encouraging other not-for-profit and charity organisations to register their volunteer needs so they can connect more locals with suitable skills.

Lots of us have dreams or vague ideas of things we would like to achieve – but not all of us have the dedication and commitment to actually make them happen.

However, Mooloolah local Scott Willis is not in that group. For the past three and a half years Scott’s goal has been to compete in the International Natural Bodybuilding Association.

Recently his dream came true, but achieving such a goal required plenty of hard work.

Scott said he dedicated himself to nearly three and a half years of training, 112 days of strict dieting and conditioning, along with some weeks totalling up to 42 hours of intense exercise (7 x 2 hour weight sessions, 21 x 1 hour cardio sessions and many gruelling hours of posing practise).

“When I stepped on stage, after coming down from a huge 108.9kg at 191cm to a muscular, lean 87.6kg, it was a feeling I will never forget,’’ he said.

It was a massive achievement for Scott, who is definitely still inspired and motivated to continue with his bodybuilding training.

His mum and dad, Jeff and Debbie Willis, the owners of BOQ Beerwah, are really proud of Scott’s achievements as he pursued his body building training while also combining his continuing studies in a Bachelor of Education at Sunshine Coast University with working part-time at the bank.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell announced that two schools in the Glasshouse Country area, Glass House Mountains and Peachester State Schools, will receive vital maintenance funding from this year’s budget.

The funding is allocated to fix existing priority maintenance issues under the two-year Advancing Our Schools Maintenance Fund. Glass House Mountains State School will receive $97,580 and Peachester State School will receive $58,896.

Minister for Education, Training and Employment, John-Paul Langbroek, said schools now have the option to choose to continue to use QBuild or to go directly to the market for the delivery of all planned and routine breakdown maintenance.

"To qualify for the funding, P&Cs will be asked to obtain three quotes from professionals to submit with their application,’’ Mr Langbroek said. “The Government will also ask P&C organisations and schools to contribute to the maintenance task if they have funds to do so.”

Exercises are tailored individually to each patient’s specific condition and needs, and are then progressed as they improve.

Classes are small and intimate so each patient receives adequate guidance and supervision.

Hydrotherapy is also a gentle way to begin an exercise program, improve cardiovascular and aerobic fitness or rehabilitate after a major injury or surgery.

School News New chaplain for Landsborough

Landsborough State School has been fortunate enough to secure a school chaplain. They are very excited to welcome Linda Whysall, a Landsborough local, who will be working at the school two days per week.

The chaplaincy program will provide the school community with a support person who will act as a coach in providing mentoring to students and liase with parents and teachers to best support the children. She will provide children and Landsborough's their families support, advice and encouragement through new school all the highs and lows which life can bring. Linda will chaplain, also run positive, fun activities for students and foster a Linda Whysall supportive, caring school community. Welcome Linda!

Sharnte champion horse drawer

Local Beerwah author Jennifer Crane recently presented a copy of her new book Opal Dreaming ‘The Bronze Horses' to Sharnte Wilson, Year 4 / 5, the winner of the colouring competition at Peachester State School.

The students were asked to draw and colour their favourite horse, and from a small school of 127 students, there were 63 entries.

Drawings included show jumpers, dream ponies, unicorns, race horses, spotted and coloured horses.

Sharnte was very pleased to win the prize and told Jennifer she has horses of her own, so that might be why she can draw them so well.

Jennifer also donated a copy of her book ‘The Bronze Horses’ to the school library. The first book in the Opal Dreaming series was launched at Beerwah Library on September 18 and is now available from Jennifer, Morris Publishing Australia and most book stores (if the store doesn’t yet have it, ask them to get it in).

Students do some fruity planting

Bunnings Caloundra donated 11 different fruit trees to Glasshouse State School as part of National Tree Planting Projects throughout the Sunshine Coast.

This adds to the school's number of ‘Tucker’ trees throughout the school grounds.

Mr Spann's Year 4/5 class got their hands dirty when they took time out of the classroom to plant the trees.

The class has been studying environmental issues affecting Australia, especially deforestation.

Mr Spann said the donation of these trees allows the children to “put something back into the ecosystem as well as grow some bush tucker”.

Volunteer and help create Ready Readers Contributed by Margaret Grambauer Would you like to give children a flying start in reading? Through the Ready Readers program, parents and volunteers learn strategies to help children become confident readers.

A Queensland Ready Reader is a parent or volunteer who will assist individual children with their reading, and engage with them to build their confidence and enjoyment in books and the art of reading.

Donation converts to education

By Brad Hampson D & F Auto Care in Landsborough has donated a Ford Capri convertible to Glasshouse Country Christian College (GCCC).

This car will be used by Year 11 and 12 Industrial Technology students for their automotive studies in their new engineering workshop.

Students will learn about small engine operations, car engine systems and basic car maintenance and servicing.

GCCC has experienced incredible growth and, as a result, its Industrial Technology students will be moving into the engineering workshop which is currently under construction and due to be completed by January 2013.

In this engineering workshop, students will also develop their skills in sheet metal craft and steel fabrication as well as use the latest in CNC routing, and laser and plasma cutting technologies.

The students of GCCC are pictured receiving the car from D & F Auto Care in front of the construction site. They would like to thank Barry and Leanne Davey for their generosity and valuable support of the college. They would also like to thank Andrew Lamb from International Automotive Training for Mechanics in Glass House Mountains for the valuable contribution of automotive training resources to the college.

Where did you go?

During July and August we travelled to Switzerland, Italy, Luxembourg, Austria and Hungary on a 12 day Grand Alpine Adventure Tour by Scenic Coach, followed by a 14 day Jewels of Europe River Cruise from Budapest, Hungary, with tours to Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany and Holland down the Danube, Mane and Rhine Rivers.

What were some of the highlights?

There were many highlights, including the magnificent Swiss Alpine villages with pretty window boxes, walking Medieval towns of Gruyere, Bratislava, Durnstein, Passau, Bamburg and Rothenburg on original narrow cobbled streets; the Budapest night cruise; visits to many beautifully ornate Baroque and Gothic Cathedrals; climbing up to and through Mad King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein (also the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) Castle; the sobering visit to Dachau Concentration Camp; the marvellous mountain views from Glacier Express and Rack Railway Rides to Mt Rigi and Gornegrat, where we had our most outstanding highlight of the whole trip – the unforgettable view of the magnificent Matterhorn dotted with snow.

Most unusual experience?

Underneath the castle in Budapest, we had a most unusual visit to the sealed underground hospital (complete with its own power, air and fuel supply and operating theatres). This was last used during the 1956 Hungarian uprising against the USSR. During the Cold War it was also a secret nuclear shelter.

Other information you would like to share with readers?

In 1971 we travelled Europe in a campervan with two small children and thought it was great. In 1994 we did a Trafalgar Grand European Tour and experienced and learnt so much more. This year for our 50th Wedding Anniversary we were fortunate to join the Scenic Grand Alpine Adventure Tour & Jewels of Europe River Cruise which was packed with a great variety of many new and different experiences for us. We can heartily recommend this trip and we haven’t even mentioned the beautiful food!

Lion Max Pinwill inducted Brian in the presence of an audience of approximately 26 people, all of whom gave him a very warm welcome.

Thanks also go to guest speaker Cr Rick Baberowski who enlightened all on what's happening in council on the Coast. He also answered many questions in a Q & A section to attendees’ satisfaction.

Morning tea, entertainment, a stall, numerous raffles and lunch was provided for all. Thank you to all who helped in preparation, and the provision of items for the stall and gifts for the provisional raffle. The lucky door fruit bowl was won by Joan Bowers and the raffle fruit bowl was won by George Bowers. At our last games day the lucky door prize winner was Patricia Williamson and the raffle was won by Maureen Drummond. What did the recent State Budget deliver for our business community?

Last week’s budget has set the foundations to rebuild the state’s economy.

Queensland is now open for business and one of the benefits for us locally, is the emphasis on strengthening business capability and encouraging small business growth.

This will be achieved through the provision of information and services and creating conditions that allow tourism and small business to thrive by reducing red tape.

Changes have also been announced for payroll tax and from July 1 2012 the exemption threshold has increased to $1.1 million and employers with payrolls up to $5.5 million now benefit from a partial deduction.

This change will benefit businesses by reducing the costs associated with employing staff and also promote employment growth by removing any disincentive to employ staff.

The Minister for Sport and Recreation Steve Dickson has advised the Ngungun summit track planning and construction on Fullertons Road, the Barrs Road access to Glass House Mountains National Park, has a budget of $131,000.

This project will continue the process of walking trail upgrade (Stage 1 completed in 2004/05 financial year which saw 800 metres of track reconstruction and relocation to provide safe and sustainable access to base of lower cliffs) to provide safer access to summit.

The focus of the 2012 Newman Budget is in growing a four pillar economy built on agriculture, construction, resources and tourism while delivering better infrastructure and planning, designed to promote Queensland as a state of opportunity and reward.

William Robert Shaw a long time local of Beerwah passed away on September 14, 2012. Since 1957 when Bill and his lovely wife Valmai purchased their pineapple farm and made Beerwah their home Bill had contributed much to our local community.

Helping pioneer the growing of tobacco in the region, he and Val were very successful farmers.

Over the years they grew a variety crops from capsicums to zucchini.

Bill was very active in the community, being a charter member of the Beerwah Lions Club, and helping with many local projects.

He was also a dedicated member of the Beerwah Golf Club, spending countless hours since the club's inception, volunteering both on the course and in the club house.

Before settling in our area he served in the Navy and was eventually posted to the minesweeper HMAS Katoomba, sweeping for and disposing of mines in the SW Pacific and Eastern and Southern Australian coastlines.

Upon discharge, Bill completed his education at Gatton College, and began working on a cattle property outside Gladstone. It was in Gladstone that Bill met the beautiful Valmai, and they began a wonderful life together.

They lived firstly in Gladstone, then Dalby, after which they moved to The Lamington Ranges.

Bill was a great fisherman, often bringing home a feed of Snapper, Tailor or Mackerel, from the rocks at King's Headland, or the beaches of Fraser Island and Double Island.

Bill had a great love of music as well, especially the bagpipes, which led to many new friends for the family.

These friends would gather from near and far for a Caleigh at the Shaws.

The parties were legendary, with lots of food and drink, music and dancing.

While Beerwah has lost a valued resident his legacy can be seen not only in the community in which he lived, but in the wonderful family he has left behind.

Bill was the quintessential Aussie. He had a great love of cold beer and good conversation, fine wine and Australian poetry, especially the works of Banjo Paterson and will be sorely missed by all that knew him.

The Beerwah RSL recently installed concertina doors at the far end of their dining area. This now allows them to create a separate (sound proof) function room when required. Having been to an event there recently– I have to say that it’s a great idea. It is something that was missing in our local area.

While there are a number of large venues where you can have a big function, having a room where you can comfortably seat up to 100 people is excellent. The room is well equipped with a great sound system, screens and a projector, which can work well for a business meeting – or just as well for doing 21st speeches and one of those embarrassing powerpoint photo presentations of the highlights of your life, starting with one of those great ‘nudie’ bath shots. It’s a disgrace

Our environment is the ultimate victim in our never ending desire for the almighty dollar. As the report just handed to Sunshine Coast Council indicated, we will be lucky to see koalas in the wild in three years on the Coast. We have had media all over the world shaming our region on its absolute lack of care towards these precious animals but nothing stops the roar of bulldozers knocking down their homes.

Progress does not mean we keep destroying and taking from mother earth until there is nothing left but concrete. Every councillor is obligated to visit the 80+ koalas being cared for at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital to see firsthand what their signatures are doing to wildlife. Only when they have stepped out of their concrete bunkers and look into the very sad eyes of a baby who clings desperately to a stuffed teddy instead of his mum he has lost, then they can say our wildlife's lives are meaningless.

How do you spell hypocrisy?

In his recent column the LNP Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, listed a number of State Budget initiatives without revealing the fact they were initiated under the former Labor Party state government (Glass House Country News, September 19, 2012).

Chief among them was the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Mr Powell’s government has spent the past six months criticising the budget strategy of the former government under which the new hospital was started.

The only conclusion is that his LNP government would never have built the new hospital. Yet he is hypocritical enough to claim it as a major achievement.

I also found it odd that Mr Powell’s column also gave himself a pat on the back for his

government’s partnership with the Keep Australia Beautiful organisation. Yet he failed to mention his government had cut funding to the very same organisation.

The Rank Outsiders Car Rally

As a part of The Hinterland Relay for Life, our team The Rank Outsiders, held a car rally on Sunday, September 16. A great day was had by all. We had 13 cars participate and the rally finished at Dicky Beach where we had a sausage sizzle. We raised $460 for our relay team, so a big thanks to all who participated.

The event was competitive with The Hourly Doulys taking out first prize – a family pass to Australia Zoo –and The Green Team taking out second prize – a family pass to Underwater World.

Our fundraising would not have been so successful without the donation of $50 by Beerwah Supa IGA which contributed to the sausage sizzle.

The Rank Outsiders would also like to thank the Glasshouse Country News for their support and promotion of our fundraising events and for supporting Hinterland 2012 Relay for Life.

We appreciate all the support we have received from the local community.

It was lovely to see so many friends and families from our local community come out and support our school.

The children were kept busy with rides, activity stalls and food while the adults enjoying sitting in the sun listening to the music from the Superdads, eating strawberries and ice cream after looking at the different stalls.

A big Glass House Mountains cheer to all the volunteers and sponsors who help make this such a successful event.

On being able to enjoy music Often late at night, I take up my guitar and begin to strum a few chords and play some patterns and scales, constructing something new here or reworking something old there. Soon I am taken by the beauty of the sounds and am “in the moment” – away with the music, listening to the rich resonance of the instrument in my hand and using it to guide me in my exploration.

I feel incredibly privileged in being able to appreciate music. Like most Australian males of my generation I was brought up on a solid diet of sport and my interest in the arts lay dormant. When I was not training for football, cricket or athletics I was working part time or studying. However something else was ticking away within me and I became involved in musicals and theatre at high school and an aptitude for music became apparent. On leaving school the “bug” really struck, and my career at university – as a budding metallurgist, soon fell into tatters.

It is never too late to begin making music and the wonderful thing is that there is no level one must reach before the pleasure begins to seep through your fingers and into your instrument. But music is not necessarily a solitary art form, and this is one of its most powerful attractions. It is also for sharing. When you begin to communicate your love of sound and the expression of something that goes deeper than words – singing together or performing for and with your colleagues, you are able to appreciate that music is for everyone. It may be that not everyone is necessarily given to creating music, but I would be surprised if everyone isn’t moved by it.

Music making maintains health and wellbeing, promotes self expression, self esteem and social cohesion. Let’s face it, music is great for the mind, the body and the soul. I feel very privileged to have it in my life.

Contributed by Michael Whiticker Last Thursday we celebrated 40 years since Neil Young’s 'Harvest' album with a tribute to his music at the Musos Club at Beerwah RSL. Doug Solow began the evening with a couple of 60s Young songs and finished with ‘Harvest Moon’ from the 90s. He was joined by Mick Bockow on guitar, yours truly on bass and Craig Riley playing harmonica.

Mick Bockow and Brett Hall then gave us a raunchy set featuring Mick’s very fine guitar soloing. This is the first time we have heard Brett at the club and with his solid bass playing and colourful Hawaiian shirts we certainly hope this wont be the last. The duo’s tribute to Neil was the Lynyrd Skynyrd song ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ with its direct reference to two Neil Young songs – ‘Alabama’ and ‘Southern Man’. Mick Od’s set, in which he was accompanied by Doug Pullen and Trigger featured Neil Young classics including ‘Comes a time’, ‘Harvest’ and ‘Needle and the Damage Done’. He was followed by Jon Brown accompanied by Tony on bass with a set which included and ‘Out on the Weekend’. Two newcomers to the Musos club Matt and Kaz, came down from Maleny for the evening and performed a set with a couple of more contemporary numbers – ‘9 crimes’ (Is that allight with you) from Damien Rice, and ‘No immortal’ from Evanescence. To make up the numbers and give Craig Riley a chance to show off his guitar prowess I performed three of Neil’s songs including ‘Helpless', 'Hey Hey My My’ and 'Heart of Gold'. Sadly for Craig with my baritone range my keys are a fifth below Mr Young’s, so having to transpose Neil’s guitar parts, Craig didnt quite get the opportunity he might have been expecting. The evening ended with an enjoyable long set from an act who more than anyone on the night have the vocal range to truly do justice to Neil Young‘s songs. This was One Small Step with Jon Brown and Glenn Stephens. They gave us an impressive showing including lovely harmonies in Toto’s ‘Africa’, Tears for Fears’ ‘Everybody wants to rule the world’, Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Hungry Heart’ and classics including ‘Desperado’ with a fine solo performance from Jon at the piano, as a fitting end to their set and the evening. www.gcnews.com.au

Since opening in 2011 we have had a great response from the local community. It is because of the support that we were encouraged to extend our services and now are now expanding to another premises.

We are able to make access even more convenient for Mooloolah, Glenivew and Eudlo residents who will be able to do their training at Mooloolah when the new club opens on Saturday, October 13.

Sportsman’s Dinner Things 2 Do Kilcoy to host classic cars and motorbikes The Kilcoy Classics on Wheels to be held on Sunday, October 14 will be a showcase of classic cars, motorbikes and specialty vehicles held in conjunction with the Wood, Wine and Art Festival.

The Kilcoy Classics will provide the public an opportunity to check out a wide variety of cars and give the owners a chance to share their interests with fellow enthusiasts.

Moving photography ‘Capturing Movement in Photography’ is not as easy as it sounds, but beginners and intermediate photographers can learn the tricks of the trade from a course devised by accomplished photographer and teacher, Peter Jendra.

Peter, a winner of numerous Camera Club, Casey Stoner, World Champion State and National Photography Awards, Superbike rider, racing at Philip will take you on the journey to capture movement with your camera. Bush dance bonanza Peachester State School is busy putting finishing touches on it's Bush Dance Bonanza to be held at the Peachester Hall on Saturday, October 27. Last year saw the school celebrate its centennial with an exciting and successful fete and this event promises to be no different.

Peachester students also love getting involved in their school events and have been learning bush dancing as part of their physical education program. It will be fantastic seeing the students perform on the night.

‘The Bush Rats’ a local, energetic folk/bush band will be performing live. They will be donating their time for our fundraiser. The evening starts at 5.00pm with a barbeque dinner. There will also be a Licensed Bar and an amazing Mega Multi Draw Raffle continuing throughout the night.

Old Gympie Road and Peachester Road Petition

Please support Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle in his petition to install traffic signals at the dangerous Beerwah intersection at Old Gympie Road and Peachester Road. The community has spoken to both Mark and me over their concerns for the safety of residents and especially the school community. Out and About

At the beginning of term three, I wrote to the school principals in Glass House offering to visit with the school and talk about Parliament and Government in Queensland. Most recently I have visited Beerburrum State School where I had a great time talking with the kids about my experiences in parliament and got to Tayler Davidson, Brooke answer some of their questions about life as a McNielly with Andrew politician and a minister. I also got to inspect the students’ kitchen garden which promotes the mantra ‘You are what you eat’ and got to sample some zucchini slice that was made fresh with the kids’ own home grown zucchinis. Well done guys!

Feedback on hinterland towns

I recently held a forum for a variety of community group to discuss a range of issues in the Caloundra Electorate, which Beerwah, Landsborough, Glenview, Eudlo and Mooloolah form part of. One interesting point that was raised was the future of these hinterland towns and what local residents want out of it. Do locals in these areas want to remain quiet heritage towns keeping their unique character, just a stone’s throw away from public transport and a short drive to Coast beaches, shopping precincts and business hubs , or do they want to match their CBD counterparts, such as Caloundra and the future Caloundra South with similar town planning and development? Last week marked a major milestone for health services on the Sunshine Coast, with the first sod turning of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital at Kawana. Construction will start this month on the major hospital, which is set to open in late 2016. This hospital will be a major boost for local residents, with services including an emergency department, a comprehensive cancer centre, specialised medical and surgical services (including neurosurgery and cardiac surgery), a maternity service, rehabilitation service and renal service. This means that patients who used to have to travel to Brisbane for certain specialist services will no longer have to.

The little boy on the stairs

About 12 years ago I was a part of a youth mission team which travelled through Thailand and India. I was quite young (21 years old) and it changed my life to see what life was like for the people who live in these two countries.

There were things that I saw and people who I met who amazed me and inspired me but there was also a side to life there, particularly in India, which I could never be prepared for ... the poverty and lack of basic things that people need to live – clean water, a house, good food.

One experience that touched me in a very personal way happened as our group was visiting a large shopping centre in a big city. We were going over a pedestrian overpass that crossed a busy smoky highway. As we walked across this dirty overpass – amidst the throng of people stomping up and down the stairs – I noticed a small boy, about five or six years old, sitting on his own, wearing only a scraggy pair of shorts.

He was skinny and his shoulder blades stuck out all crooked. He was begging.

I stopped and he looked right at me. I stood there looking at the boy in absolute shock and sorrow. I was overcome with emotions that I couldn’t explain at the time and my friends took me by the arm and said “Come on Mike, we have to go, you can’t help all the beggars”.

I have never forgotten that little boy and I never will. I still pray for him. I don’t know if he is still alive or what his life was like.

I wrestled with God about this for a long time. I couldn’t understand why so many people like that boy suffer so much and we live in comfortable Australia. As I sought God for answers it occurred to me that it also broke God’s heart to see that boy living like that. God loves us all so much that he not only gave us an amazing world to live in, he gave us his very best – his son Jesus. We are the ones who cause the poverty and crime in the world – not God. What do we do with this knowledge?

I believe that we should do all that we can to make this world a better place so that kids like that little boy don’t have to live like that. We need to stop being so selfish. Have a look at what Jesus said about this in the bible: Matthew 25 verse 34-40.

Beerwah Bulldog in Representative Team In August, Beerwah Bulldogs player Hannah Brown was selected to play for the Caboolture District Rugby League Representative team. Hannah travelled to Hervey Bay to participate in the U12's girls Rugby League South East Queensland three day carnival. Caboolture remained undefeated throughout the three day competition but were defeated in the finals by Toowoomba 12-6. The girls played a total of six games against teams from Bundaberg to the Gold Coast and from South West Queensland.

Hannah also played with a team of selected players in Ipswich this year as a part of the Women in League Carnival, which also involved the opportunity

The winner of Division 1 was Viki Bartel, with a great score of 68 nett, on a count back from Cindy Godfrey. Cindy was runner up, also on 68 nett.

Division 2 was well won by Carol Fraser with a nett score of 68. Runner up was one of our new members, Julie Hughes, with a 72 nett. With the course a lot drier, we are getting some pretty good scores coming in. This week’s NTP's were Lorraine McCamley on 2, Gail Gundry on 5, Mavis Brimelow on 16 and Kaye Jansen took out 18. Starting from scratch!

Once again I am starting my vegetable patch from scratch.

This has come about because we decided to expand on our passion for providing the family with all our vegetables, herbs, eggs and some of our fruit, to going the whole hog, so to speak, and adding more fruit and some meat … and hopefully generate some income doing what we love best … producing on a larger scale: Farming!

Obviously, to do this we required more land and thus we sold our patch and home, and are starting out again with more land. Our family dream for the future is to produce all of our fresh food items such as, vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, eggs and honey.

Whilst at first this is a little overwhelming when considering the work it will take, I aim to try to keep in mind that we have the rest of our lives to do this. What a blessing that is really, having the opportunity to do what we love every day.

So, first things first … locating and designing the new patch. Whilst this sounds simple, there are numerous factors to consider.

1. Aspect – Any healthy veggie patch needs at least seven hours of sunlight in both summer and winter. Ideally it should be north to northeasterly facing, however if this isn’t possible, you can utilise different shaded areas for more shade tolerant vegetables such as silver beet or leeks, and very hot sunny areas for heat tolerant capsicums or fennel.

2. Size and Space – I have decided to segregate my garden areas to suit the style of plants I need to grow. My compact vegetables will be grown near the house in a raised garden bed of approximately 1.5 metres by 20 metres, divided into six rotational sections, whilst my vine crops such as watermelon, pumpkin and rockmelon will be planted in mounds on a paddock area adjacent to my fruit orchard. I used to just plant compact varieties or just trim consistently to contain my vines, which worked fine, however I plan to grow a greater quantity now.

3. Access – This needs to be considered from a number of perspectives.

Will your garden be easy to plant in, harvest from and maintain? My initial plan for a terrace style garden ended at this point.

4. Water – When considering a new garden location, not only should you be thinking about how to water your patch, but how water will flow in and around your patch during watering and heavy rains. Stormwater and garden bed runoff, when considered well, can be utilised effectively to provide nutrients and water to areas of high need, such as fruit trees.

5. Garden bed style – Raised bed or direct planting; dig or no dig; sleepers or bricks? So many considerations, but this really comes down to budget, availability of materials and personal preference. I personally find raised beds more productive in an organic setting when filled correctly and will be opting for this for my main patch.

6. Aesthetics – This is the point where I am lost in all my dream ideas, before being restricted by costs, time and feasibility … but I just love planning vegetable patches! To me, a vegetable patch can be the most beautifully presented garden if designed to suit the location. Let your imagination run a little wild and create.

At the end of the day, assuming you have accounted for the first two factors, the remaining points can be addressed with a bit of handy work, and I’m very lucky to have a very handy hubby!

So, after addressing these first two vital factors, I went straight to aesthetics and planning my dream garden design … raised garden bed built out of rocks … gravity fed watering system that drip feeds the vegies on a timer … drainage from the garden directed to the orchard area … I love dreaming!

How my hubby reacts to my design when he reads this will probably determine whether my dream becomes reality! I did say I was “very lucky to have a very handy hubby!”
