Hi Everyone
T
his week we bring you the last edition for Winter, with Thursday being the first day of September and the first day of Spring – and we are now into the final lead up to Father’s Day. While I don’t think Father’s Day gets the same attention as Mother’s Day in terms of the well considered gifts and pampering, etc, we do have some great Father’s Day gift ideas on page 23. It is always nice to stop and have some family time and thank Dad for what he brings to your life. So how about heading out to one of the many great local parks for a picnic and cranking up the barbecue? But remember to let Dad sit back and relax, and if no one else in the family knows their way around a barbecue, then we have plenty of local pubs for lunch this Sunday instead! For those of you who have headed along to the Paws of Thunder held previously on Father’s Day and organised by the Maleny Apex, this year they are letting their member’s focus on their own Father’s Day duties, and will be holding the event on the following weekend. And happy Dad’s Day for Sunday! Regards,

Be sure to keep an eye out around the Hinterland at the beginning of September when The Cycle Queensland 2016 adventure tour from Woodford to Hervey Bay commences its popular mass ride through the Moreton Bay and Wide BayBurnett regions. The full event takes nine days and caters to all levels and ages of cyclists. Starting on Saturday, September 3, the tour will loop through Woodford on the first day followed by a 43 km cycle up to Maleny the following day, stopping at Peachester for morning tea. The third day of the event will see hundreds of cyclists travelling a further 43 km onto Kennilworth where the tour will continue a daily itinerary up to Hervey Bay, concluding on September 11. There will be a number of local riders participating in this fully catered ‘nine day holiday’ including Maleny resident Mary Garden who will be participating in her fifth Cycle Queensland tour. The event is designed for riders to have fun and enjoy their cycling – all needs are taken care of by the team of 300 volunteers who help set up nightly camps, toilets and hot showers, and serve three meals a day for the event duration.

Mary took up cycling later in life and started by cycling around the local bike paths of Beerwah and Landsborough. In 2009, encouraged by her daughter, she purchased her first mountain bike and started trail riding. From there Mary was coaxed into joining a friend from the Maleny Lycra Lizards to start riding on the road and her love affair with cycling began. “I am thrilled that this year Cycle Queensland is coming to my own home area. Over the last few years I have spent hundreds of hours cycling around the hinterland on various bikes and enjoying the spectacular views from Bald Knob Road which we will be going along on the second day. I can’t wait!” said Mary. For more details of the tour see www.cycleqld.bq.org.au

Rail line disruption in September Local commuters and rail users will be disrupted by the closure of the rail lines between Caboolture and Zillmere from 9.00am September 16 until 2.00am September 23. The decision by Queensland Rail and the Department of Transport and Main Roads will allow for the integration of the signalling system on the long awaited Moreton Bay Rail Link from Petrie to Kippa Ring. Minister for Transport Stirling Hinchliffe said preparations were now underway to support the rail line closure. “We know that this will be a major disruption for commuters who travel between Caboolture and Zillmere on the train line,” said Mr Hinchliffe. “The department has deliberately timed this closure for the school holidays as it reduces the number of customers impacted by the closure, in particular school-aged children and those on holidays and modelling shows us that the line has less demand during this period. “We are planning to mobilise more than 200 buses to accommodate affected passengers to ensure everyone can get to their destination. “I will also be asking my Director-General to write to other departments to allow public servants, who are able to work from home to accommodate this request during this period.” Mr Hinchliffe said that extra station staff will be available at stations and bus connections to assist passengers and temporary timetables will be available for the closure.
“We have taken measures to limit the inconvenience for customers however we ask that regular Caboolture line customers take note of this substantial closure and have alternative options in place where possible,” he said. “For those customers who can, I encourage them to consider working from home during this period.” During peak period buses will be ‘turn up and go’ with express buses available from each station to Boondall station and buses stopping at all stations for intermediate travel. During off-peak buses will run at 15 minute frequencies with buses running express and stopping at all stations. “We know this is a major inconvenience to Caboolture and Sunshine Coast line passengers but I cannot stress enough how important this work is to enable the Moreton Bay rail line to open,” Mr Hinchliffe said. More information on the closure is available at www.translink.com.au, the MyTransLink app or call 13 12 30.

AGL paper accounts should be Caloundra Electorate Community labelled ‘Infringement Notices’ Awards nominations State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has slammed AGL for imposing fees on clients who choose to receive paper accounts and elect to pay their bills over the counter.
Nominations for the 2016 Caloundra Electorate Community Awards close in just under two weeks!
“For years AGL have issued paper bills for no charge, but suddenly they want to charge people $1.75 to receive it and $2.00 to pay the account over the counter,” Mr McArdle said. “Clearly their paper bills should be renamed ‘AGL Infringement Notices’. “There are thousands of people who don’t receive bills via computer and for many reasons. "They don’t have one, they don’t trust computers, they don’t want to provide their banking details and they simply want to keep a hard copy record of the account. “It is very unfair of AGL to go down this road, which in essence is a tax on people who don’t comply with AGL’s preferences and use modern technology.” Mr Steward Harrison of Caloundra West said; “My wife and I have been receiving a hard copy bill for years and I don’t know why we are being penalised because we don’t have a computer.” “AGL have always issued paper accounts which would have been part of their pricing structure and now we are being hit with another fee – it is simply ridiculous. “We intend to start a petition so AGL understand that this is a ridiculous step and the people that are hurting most are their long-term customers. “This is simply a slap in the face to many of those people,” said Mr Harrison. Mr McArdle said the petition will be available through his electorate office at 1A, 20 Ormuz Avenue, Caloundra and also at mobile sites he will be attending. “Too many people are having their income widdled away by fees and charges,” Mr McArdle said.
These awards recognise outstanding achievements and talent in the Caloundra community. If you haven't already done so, please take just a few minutes to nominate someone you know in one of the following categories: - Young Achiever of the Year - Young Sport Achiever of the Year - Sport Achiever of the Year - Environmental Contributor of the Year - Community Group of the Year - Community Event of the Year - Business Achiever of the Year - Caloundra Hall of Fame Identity Hurry, nominations close Friday, September 9 so enter yours today! The awards are proudly hosted by Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle and they will be presented on Friday, September 23 at 9.30am, at the CCSA Hall Caloundra, 1 Nutley Street. All nominations must be received on the official nomination form which is available at Mr McArdle’s website: www.markmcardlemp.com. More information can be found at www.facebook.com/MarkMcArdleMP People are welcome to provide additional details about their nominees, but it must be no more than 250 words. Please note that contact details of nominees may be forwarded to local media. Please return your completed forms to caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au, mail PO Box 655, Caloundra Queensland, 4551 or hand deliver to Office of Mark McArdle, 1A 20 Ormuz Avenue, Caloundra.

On August 16 at the Chamber’s Annual General Meeting I was elected as President of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our members for the trust and confidence and I hope that I can live up to everybody’s expectations. Let me start with the basics; what is the Chamber and how can a business profit from the membership? Well, the Chamber represents its members at all levels of government, be it council, state and, if necessary, federal. This has been very clearly demonstrated when the Federal Government agreed to a $150,000 grant for the installation of CCTV cameras in Glasshouse, Beerwah and Landsborough after there were quite a number of break-ins and damage to businesses. Our business community is much safer now. The Chamber was also at the forefront of the improvements to Simpson Street which was then taken over by Council as the Beerwah Plus project. It goes without saying that this has put Beerwah on the map. People who haven’t visited the area for a number of years are without exception astounded to see the improvements to the town. This now leads me to the next big challenge for our district. We need to make it tourism friendly, after all we have the mountains (not Maleny or the coast). The Chamber will undertake all in its power to improve tourist visitation and hopefully get full support from businesses as well as the

general population. We will have to start at the bottom and take small steps in the right direction. The Chamber currently has six Executive Members and there is only so much this group can do. All of us are working full time and dedicate our spare time to make the Hinterland a better place. We need the support of our business community to achieve what we have set out to achieve. Our membership numbers are currently around 70 businesses; if we want to make representation at all levels of government and be heard it is essential for ALL businesses to join the Chamber.
KM Personal Training, Group Fitness and Pilates Kelly McMaster started her local group fitness sessions in March of this year, driven with a passion for fitness spanning over 15 years. Kelly’s approach to training is to focus on fun, fitness and endurance, incorporating bodyweight exercise. Running regular sessions alternating between Glasshouse and Beerwah, the group fitness sessions are challenging but fun, and are also child friendly. Fiona from Beerwah has been with Kelly from the start. “Coming to boot camps is really good, such a great atmosphere and the social aspect is something I enjoy too. I really like Kelly’s approach; the sessions are never the same so it keeps my interest up.” So what happens when you first come along? For all new clients Kelly assesses your current fitness level, including any ongoing or temporary medical conditions, and adapts group fitness training to suit. Alicia from Beerwah has found that a lot of other boot camps are very similar, but with Kelly there was something different offered. “I really appreciate how Kelly helps me, and modifies my exercises so I can still train as part of a group, but to my own abilities,” said Alicia. Kelly likes to work with all her clients to achieve their personal goals, whether that is fitness, health, or weight loss. With no lock-in contracts, Kelly finds offering flexible sessions works well for busy people, while still offering positive results. And if you are ready to take the next step there is the option of personal training sessions too. In either half hour or full hour sessions, Kelly can push you to your limits. Or if a more relaxed style of exercise is your thing, why not try Pilates on the deck every Friday. Well known as a method for total body conditioning, Pilates is also a great stress reliever too. Have your say on the future of the Conondale Memorial Recreation Park The community is invited to have their say as Sunshine Coast Council develops the Conondale Memorial Recreation Park Draft Master Plan. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the draft plan identified future requirements for facilities and infrastructure, and future management arrangements. “The draft plan aims to be consistent with community demand, whilst also protecting the environmental values of the site,” Cr McKay said. “The draft master plan ensures continued adherence with council endorsed strategies, all of which articulate the protection of the Park as a Motorcycle Precinct. The draft plan also upholds a key principle of ensuring continued and improved access for the community to the Park. “We want to ensure the draft master plan is realistic and considers the expectations and capacity of council and stakeholders.” Sport and leisure consultants Otium Planning Group have been engaged to assist council in undertaking this study. Cr McKay said there were several ways the community could engage directly with the consultants. “This will include a ‘Meet us at the Park’ event on Saturday, September 17, feedback forms and a dedicated email address or phone number available to all community members,” Cr McKay said. “It is important to note council has not made a commitment to fund all recommendations from the draft master plan. Its implementation will

require external funding assistance. Council is, however, of the view that this site has enormous potential so it is important that planning is undertaken in an orderly and consultative manner. Community feedback will continue throughout the draft master planning process and will close on Friday, September 23. Feedback received during the community consultation period will inform the final master plan which will then be presented to council for endorsement. Meet in the Park event - Saturday, September 17, 10.00am - 1.00pm, Conondale Memorial Recreation Park, 1156 Maleny - Kenilworth Road, Elaman Creek (approximately 4.8km from the Conondale Township). The community can share their views on the project by contacting the consultants, Otium Planning, on email conondalereserve@ otiumplanning.com.au or phone 3040 6658. Sometimes when I am out and about at local events I meet people who like a chat and have a burning desire to share their ‘story’. So we have decided to introduce a regular feature where we will do a profile on a local person - just because they are interesting, inspiring or just happy to share some of their life experiences. This week we are introducing Lesleigh Everitt of Beerwah.
A rediscovered passion for life
In 2013, David Everitt suffered a full cardiac arrest at his home in Beerwah aged just 57, fortunately his wife Lesleigh was at home and able to perform CPR, until the ambulance arrived. David sustained an acquired brain injury as well as other complications, and in the following few years Lesleigh gave up a dynamic and successful corporate life to stay at home and care for her husband. It has been quite a journey as they both shared a determination and will for David to recover from a life changing condition. One that has allowed Lesleigh to rediscover new avenues of personal fulfilment and achievement. David spent the following eight months in hospital, and during this time Lesleigh devoted herself to his care and rehabilitation. What she discovered was both the challenges of dealing with the ongoing care for a loved one in the hospital system, as well as the loss of personal identity and financial freedom as she put her own needs to one side, to focus on her husband. “What I realised was that I didn’t want to be David’s’ carer - I wanted to be his wife, and so I was absolutely committed to helping him get better,” she said. “Once he started to get better though I began to
By Sonia Clark question what my role was, and I vitally needed to do something again - other than be a carer. I had lost the essence of who I was.” After two years of looking after David, losing her personal networks, work identity and a life outside of being a carer – depression and loneliness began to creep in. Lesleigh realised she needed to find her own passion and personal value again. Adapting to her circumstances, Lesleigh threw herself into network marketing of health related products. This allowed her to work from home yet extend her professional and social network. Lesleigh says the resulting change in her outlook as she rediscovered her passion was remarkable. From her personal experiences, Lesleigh is keen to help inspire others and this is reflected in her commitment to promoting (especially) women’s personal care and encouraging them to take personal responsibility for their physical and mental health. “I want to encourage women especially in their 50’s and 60’s to get out there – there is so much out there still to achieve – I want women to look after themselves and find their passion – much more than just looking after others,” she says.
Another important lesson she learnt through this period was the importance of speaking up in a medical environment – especially in situations where doctors and specialists may know a lot about the medical side of patient care, but not so much about the personal aspects. She also experienced how important it was to be given information that is understood and not just medical jargon. It was from this situation and Lesleigh’s previous background in pharmaceutical sales (where she dealt with medical professionals on a regular basis) that she was encouraged to join the hospital board as a consumer representative giving a voice and advocacy to those in hospital who may not feel they can speak up. It is also important for people to realise that if they have concerns they can make contact with the hospital consumer reps who can assist bridge the communication gap that can exist. To find out more about being a volunteer consumer representative visit www.health.qld. gov.au/sunshinecoast/html/CaCE-main.asp If you would like to make contact with Lesleigh she can be emailed at lesleigheveritt52@gmail.com

Psychic visits Women’s Social Group
(next to Beerwah Post Office)
HOURS: Monday to Thursday 8.00am till 5.00pm Friday and Saturday mornings by appointment
The Glasshouse Country Women’s Social Group had some amazing insights with psychic Craig Harmer on Wednesday, August 24 at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. Craig is the co-owner of the Healthy Guru and is a psychic reader, vision guide, spiritual counsellor and divine source enhancement practitioner. Craig shared his journey about how he came to be a psychic. He also explained about the difference between what psychics and mediums do and about people’s energy and intuition. Some in the room had never had an experience with a psychic before and everyone was very moved by Craig’s ability to tap into each person’s life accurately. The group gave Craig a Moreton Bay Fig Bonsai in appreciation for sharing his ability and knowledge with the Women’s Social Group. The next Women’s Social Group outing will be a trip to Sunline Alpacas Farm in Palmwoods

Contributed by Mike Turner The Glasshouse Country Chaplaincy Golf Classic postponed due to bad weather in June will now be held on Sunday, September 11, with the local state school chaplaincies hosting a golf day at the Beerwah Golf Club. The ‘Glasshouse Country Chaplaincy Golf Classic’ will hit off at 12.00noon with lunch and registration taking place from 11.00am. For chaplains Nikki, Linda, Donna and Mike, this event is the major fundraiser for the year. All profits go to the chaplaincy services at Beerburrum, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Landsborough State Schools and Beerwah State High School. Chaplains are an important part of school support teams; they work alongside guidance officers, school nurses and Indigenous workers to provide support to students. They support kids who are dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression, bullying, grief, anger, domestic violence, relationship problems and low self-esteem. They assist teaching staff with the educational goals of students and provide mentoring programs, camps and loads of other activities that help build confidence and resilience in young people. Chaplains have a unique role in that they are also there as a support to families and staff members. Thank you to all those businesses who have already come onboard with this event as hole sponsors and who are bringing teams to play. This event is a lot of fun and is a great opportunity for work colleagues to spend some time together out of the office and at the same time supporting a worthy cause. If you would like to enter a team please contact Andrew Pearce on 0410 616 982 or andrew@blissfulbellies. com.au for further information.

Whether it is finding a great book to immerse yourself in or learning how to use the latest technology, Beerwah Library is the place to be. For the James Patterson fans, you might like to escape with his latest BookShots series which are short, high-impact stories you can read in one sitting. If you want to pick up some good reads to add to your own collection, make sure you head to the Beerwah Library’s Friends of the Library Book Sale on the second Saturday of each month from 9.00am – 12.00noon. Hardcover books are just $2.00, paperbacks $1.00, books for children and teens only 50 cents and DVDs from 50 cents. And if you want to connect with the library anytime, ask the library team about downloading free eBooks and eAudio books and magazines, and streaming free music, documentaries, and indie movies. There are two sessions on Monday, September 12 and Tuesday, October 4. Bookings are essential via www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Credit Union grants
Maleny Credit Union Charitable Trust grants will make a difference in many lives especially for young mothers and their babies from STEMM (Supporting Teenagers with Education, Mothering and Mentoring). The program supports pregnant and parenting young women to re-engage in education to provide better futures for themselves and their children. Other young people to benefit will be high school students that have many challenges in their lives and may be disengaged from life because of problems at home, school or in social situations. There will be 10 young people who will participate in the Youth Insearch Program for a minimum of 12 months. They will have access to a range of support (weekend workshops, support groups and leadership training, peer support and individual counselling). Grants money will also be used towards supporting local events such as Wittafest and the Maleny Christmas Carnival. C&K Maleny and Chenrezig Institute will also benefit from grants money. Maleny Credit Union thank and acknowledge the support of its members that make it possible to award these grant monies. Funds are also received from Maleny IGA through their CBC program. One community program supporting another, good on you Maleny! The next round of grants is now open and closes on January 15. Go to www.mcu.com.au/service/ grant-applications/ to find out more and get access to the grant application form.
Mooloolah shines during National Op Shop Week
The Mooloolah Community Centre is this week dusting off the fine china and throwing open their doors for a major sale to celebrate National Op Shop Week, August 21-27. Run by more than 50 dedicated volunteers, the centre proudly claims to be the best Op Shop on the Sunshine Coast, boasting a variety of bric-abrac and household items for less than $2.00. They kicked off the celebrations with a morning tea on Monday, attended by friends of the Community Centre and Caloundra MP Mark McArdle. Mooloolah Valley Community Association President Alan O’Callaghan said it was their way of saying thank you to their valued volunteers. “You really can’t beat the sense of community we have here,” Mr O’Callaghan said. MVCA Secretary Anita Verwayen said people could easily set up their whole house for a couple of hundred dollars, with the proceeds going where they are needed. “We spend the money on good causes for the community, that’s what we do,” she said. “Just recently we were able to help a family from Beerwah where the mother had just lost her job and her son had eye problems and had a really short period of time to try and find the funds for an eye operation.” Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle congratulated the team on their incredible efforts. “Every time I come out here the crew is always busily working away, sorting goods to display in the Op Shop, which is always packed with customers,” Mr McArdle said. “They love what they do, the community love what they do and for anybody who hasn’t visited the Mooloolah Community Centre you really need
to come out here for a visit to see what everyone is talking about.” Sally Creagh from Do Something says donating to a local op shop is a wonderful way to help others. “Donating to your local op shop is a great way to support the fantastic welfare programs they provide for the community - but did you know that an estimated 40% of the items donated to op shops are thrown out?” she said. “Donating unusable junk amounts to illegal dumping at op shops.” Ms Creagh recommends the following when clearing out the cupboards: • Clothes are sorted according to their wearability and marketability, so make sure items are clean and preferably wrinkle-free. Obvious stains, rips or broken zips etc will result in the item being rejected, so only donate clothes you would not be embarrassed to give to a friend. A missing button is ok, but try to make any small repairs before you donate. • If you are not sure about whether your furniture or other item is donatable condition, call your local charity op shop and ask them to clarify. A missing drawer in a dresser might exclude it for some charities, but others may accept it due to its upcycling potential. The Mooloolah Community Centre is located at 43 Bray Road, Mooloolah Valley. The Op Shop is open Monday - Saturday 9.00am - 1.00pm. They also run community garden and mosaic workshops, host a monthly community barbecue, offer JP signing services and counselling and offer financial relief for those in need. Insightful cultural visit
Aunty Eve and Liza from the Nungeena Aboriginal Corporation for Women’s Business were invited to come into the Goodstart Childcare Centre recently to talk about their traditions, cultures and share their stories with the children. Although Aunty Eve and Liza are not from this land, they have been given permission to share these stories and traditions. Aunty Eve started the morning by sharing the story of the mountains with the children and referred to Mount Beerwah as Mother Beerwah and spoke about how the land we are on is sacred land. Liza then talked us through the artefacts that she
had brought in and what they were and still are used for. The day ended with the children and Aunty Eve completing some dot painting.

Mooloolah State School supported by local IGA Once again the local White’s IGA Mooloolah has supported Mooloolah State School with a cheque for shopping dockets and the chaplaincy program. The students, staff and families are very thankful and appreciative of their continual support of our school. Ken Grant from Mooloolah IGA visited the school again with not one but two cheques this time. One cheque in the amount of $264.00 was for the accumulation of collected shopping dockets and the other for $500.00 will help ‘Chappy Mark’ with resources for his work with the students. The community are doing an amazing job of bringing in their shopping dockets, which are then collated and we are given a percentage back in money from IGA to help raise funds for the school. So keep them coming in everyone. The school chaplain works twice a week within the school with a number of students and families that face a variety of challenges.
Chappy spends time with students one on one and in small groups. He has recently introduced new resources to use with the students, such as electronic kits, experiments and making helicopters to fly. So, thank you again Mooloolah IGA for supporting our school and community: “How the locals like it.”

Happy 1st Birthday! Wow, it’s been a year since we opened our doors at Forest Heart and thank you for the wonderful support we have received in establishing the first commercial retail native plant nursery focusing on the indigenous (local) native plants of south East Queensland. It’s been a busy year, learning the ropes of running a retail nursery, but an absolute pleasure helping our customers to find the right local native plant for their garden or revegetation. We have recently expanded our plant supply to include some Australian native cultivars such as a wide range of Grevilleas, Bottle Brushes and hedging Lillypilly’s. Our focus here is widening our appeal to gardeners with these plants that are widely known (but also sneaking in some of our lesser known local beauties too!) We also carry a great range of fruit trees from a growing list of suppliers, so there’s plenty of variety and it’s increasing all the time. Citrus, Blueberries, Olives, Mulberry, Avocado, Mango, Pecan and many more. The most exciting part of our business is that as time goes on our range of great local native plants increases and with over 3,500 species of local native’s plants in South East Queensland, we’ve certainly got our work cut out for us. Thanks again for your support so far and if you haven’t had a chance to pop in yet come a check our great range. All the best, Spencer and Karen.
Environment Vege Management Bill defeat to benefit Glass House
Andrew Powell with The State Governments plan to introduce new Jennifer Kellie Vegetation Management Laws was defeated in Parliament last week following efforts by the LNP and minor parties. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, has repeatedly called for the proposed laws to be voted down based on feedback from locals within his electorate who were strongly opposed to the potential changes. “Had these laws been passed, we would have seen Glass House’s agriculture sector and future economic growth come to a screaming halt,” he said. Amendments moved by the LNP when in government restored a level of balance between strong vegetation laws and sustainable farming. All remnant vegetation remained protected unless it was subject to a small list of exemptions, such as building a house, or was assessed and granted a permit such as for high-value agriculture or for routine management under a selfassessable code. A key element of our reforms was the new permit for highvalue agriculture to sustainably grow Queensland’s agricultural sector. “There are large portions of Glass House that are designated as rural and families have chosen to settle in these beautiful pockets for the subsequent lifestyle and to undertake agricultural pursuits. To be told they couldn’t responsibly manage their own regrowth vegetation, located on their own property, was just outrageous. “Jennifer Kellie from Woodford got in touch with my office many times regarding the devastating effect the proposed changes would have had on her ability to maintain her property in the way she has since the day she bought it. Orchard owners in Mt Mee and Bellthorpe alone contacted me alarmed their avocado and macadamia farms were now being considered native remnant or regrowth vegetation,” Mr Powell commented. “Under the proposed Palaszczuk Government laws too many Glass House constituents were told they could no longer manage vegetation on their property and yet what was being protected had either been mown on a weekly basis, was lantana, or was a previous or current orchard - not native vegetation.”

Two new community groups – Hinterland Bush Links Inc and Maleny District Green Hills Fund – have partnered with Sunshine Coast Council to help restore our natural environment. Both groups that applied for funding under council’s Environment Levy Partnership Program were successful. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council recognised that great environmental outcomes come from great community partnerships, beyond just the financial contribution. “The Environment Levy Partnerships Funding Program offers incorporated community groups up to three years of funding towards operational expenses and allows us to better engage and work with the community to build effective partnerships to assist in the delivery of our environmental strategies,” Cr McKay said. “This year’s applicants were offered a share of $45,450 for one year only, with our continuing partnerships with 20 existing groups accounting for the remaining $508,738 in funding allocated this financial year. “The purpose of funding the two community groups for only one year is to bring them into alignment with the existing groups whose three-year partnership funding finishes in 2017. “These partnerships not only represent great value for money, but they are also a way for council to work with the groups to help them develop capacity with good governance and sustainable practices. “In the last financial year 2015/16, our partnership funding of approximately $550,000 contributed to the services of 24 not-for-profit community environmental groups with a total operation cost of $3,631,199. “Collectively these organisations engaged with 5088 registered members and 4487 volunteers who provided 191,240 volunteers hours. These organisations were accessed by 3835 different groups and 264,656 people visited the facilities. “Congratulations to the successful applicants. Council looks forward to working with you to achieve great things.” The 2016/17 Environment Levy Partnership offers: •$37,000 Hinterland Bush Links Inc towards the long term conservation of all native species and regional ecosystems in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, through landscape-scale connectivity planning and restoration of habitat. •$8450 to Maleny District Green Hills Fund for the administrative and maintenance costs to allow the group to continue to maintain revegetation areas within the Maleny precinct. www.gcnews.com.au

Beerwah Charity 2016 Scarecrow competition winners A big novelty drawcard for the Beerwah Charity Sports Day is the hotly contested Scarecrow Competition with entries displayed throughout the Hinterland properties and businesses. Once again the judges had a consistently high standard of entry to consider in making their final decision and with all entries displaying high levels of flair and creativity, the judges had a lot to consider. Six categories were awarded winners on the day and the winning entries are as follows: the winner of the ‘Business Premises’ was entry number 2, by Beerburrum Service Station with a ‘Transformer’ inspired ‘Bumblebee’ figure. ‘People’s Choice’ was awarded to entry number 16 by Beerwah State School with an impressive 336 votes. ‘Scariest’ was awarded to entry
Super Strawberry winners
This year saw some consistently robust and certainly interesting entries in the ‘Super Strawberry Competition’. School News Book Week not just for the littlies
For many years primary students at Glasshouse Christian College have hogged all the fun during Book Week, dressing up as their favourite characters and celebrating books in all their forms. So for some time the secondary students have been looking on and secretly wishing they were back in primary school just for the fun of dressing up. Last year a trickle Some of GCC secondary staff in of middle school students bravely their costumes wore costumes, but this year the floodgates opened and students from Year 7 right through to Year 12 became their favourite characters for a day. GCC teachers set a good example by throwing themselves into the fun and it was a hotly contested competition until Gandalf (aka mild mannered Maths teacher Mrs Cathy Horrigan) took the prize. This year secondary students had their turn on Monday and primary students on Thursday during Book Week. However, in 2017 it is planned to have one big combined dress up day when students from Prep to Year 12 will transform the College into a colourful parade of literary characters.

Book Week celebrations at Mooloolah State School Contributed by Michelle Lencz
Each year the school comes alive with different characters at the school’s annual Book Week parade to celebrate the love of books. This year was just as exciting with many children dressing up and embracing their characters for the day. There were so many different costumes to see in the parade, it was hard for the judges to choose just two students from each year level. We saw super hero characters, nursery rhyme characters, Disney characters and a whole lot more. There was something for everyone to relate to. The enthusiasm of the students and staff reflects the strong commitment to reading programs within the school and our love of books and how they entertain in many themes such as animals, sport, fantasy, technology, facts, etc.
Mooloolah State School students would like to also thank our special guests from Little Munchkins Learning Centre who came to our Book Week parade and participated with the older students. The young guests also received a tour of our library and resources and had stories read to them.

Contributed by Debbie Ives On Tuesday, August 23, Beerwah State School staff and students dressed up as their favourite book character, with a special parade of their costumes in their morning Parade. Each year all over Australia 'Children's Book Week' is a great way to celebrate everyone’s love of reading and literature. In addition to the dress up fun, students in Prep to Year 2 had an opportunity to enter a competition based on the book ‘Piranhas Don’t Eat Bananas’. The students were encouraged to design a Piranha or other fish and decorate it. The Years 3 to 6 competition was based on designing a book cover (dust jacket) representing their favourite book. The winners of the Book Week competition were: Prep Breanne and Malikah, Year 1 Hannah, and Year 2 Jessica, Tiffany, and Hayden. In the upper school, Maddison, Evelyn, Kate, Lee, Corey, and Mikaylah, all received a reward with Zacharie as the winner. Bronwyn Reid, the school's Library Technician, each week celebrates and awards the classes that stand out for their conscientious borrowing, showing respect and active learning.

Beerburrum Book Week
Contributed by Tina DeClara Once again Beerburrum State School has joined into the fun of the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week celebrations. This year’s theme - Australia! Story Country celebrates Australian children’s literature and the stories of all Australian people. The week was a great opportunity for teachers to link books to something tangible to get kids excited about reading. The school’s library was decorated with the student’s Australian animal craft and our very own Australian Book Tree, billabong and a Beerburrum Bunyip! All week students participated in lots of fun activities in the Library, including a colouring in competition with some outstanding results, making it very hard to choose just one winner from each class. Our school librarian, Mrs Gayle Hennessey said “Our annual Book Week Parade is a great opportunity to bring together children from every grade to share their favourite book characters and for teachers to get involved in the fun!”
Prep open day at Beerburrum For children starting Prep in 2017, Beerburrum State School are hosting a Prep Open Day from 9.00am -11.00am on Wednesday, September 7. This will be a great opportunity for you and your child to experience the school’s unique Kitchen Garden Program, meet the staff, become familiar with the school and view the Prep classroom in action. Please RSVP by Friday, August 26 on 5439 5222 or email admin@beerburrss.eq.edu.au
Peachester State School regionally commended
Contributed by Sally Joyce School Principal Rosemarie Hodder was thrilled to be ‘Commended by the Assistant Regional Director’ on Peachester State School’s 2016 NAPLAN Data. The school’s data reflected consistent improvement and most notably outperformed the state and nation in reading and grammar and punctuation in Years 3 and 5. Cooper and Amber buddy reading The Peachester State School in our Forest Classroom attributes its success to its reading program led by Mrs Page and the classroom teachers. In other areas, the small school of 89 students performed above the state in Year 5 Numeracy and showed continued improvement in writing and spelling. Mrs Hodder assured the school’s P&C that “they can be very confident that the school is definitely value adding to their children’s learning.” She attributed this to "the team of hardworking, highly skilled and dedicated teachers”. Peachester parents take an active interest in their children’s learning. The P&C was also made aware of a recent survey where research has shown "the more parents are engaged with their child’s schooling, the better educational outcomes their children will have" and the Peachester community believe this combined effort has paid off in our good results. You Said It Wittafest
As part of this year’s Wittafest on September 17 we will be telling the story of how Witta was initially named Teutoburg by early German settlers then changed to Witta. Mark Clayton from Queensland Museum sent this message and we hope your readers can help him – and us. He would like to track down any artefacts with the name ‘Teutoburg’ as outlined below; Queensland Museum has commenced planning for a new gallery (opening November 2018) which will examine the legacies of the 1914 – 1918 War. Hundreds of citizens of German extraction were interned during this period, and dozens of towns also discarded their original Germanic-sounding name in favour of an Anglicised alternative). Witta was one of those in this last category, having adopted this name in 1916. Curiously though, the name Teutoburg State School appears to have been retained until 1926. Although not readily apparent this was nonetheless a legacy of the 1914 – 1918 War, and an echo of a somewhat less salutary episode. The Queensland Museum is keen to try and locate any items from this period inscribed with the name ‘Teutoburg’. This could include things such as road or shop signs, produce containers or packaging, or State School uniforms (or part thereof), sporting awards, prizes, certificates etc. It’s been suggested to me that you might be able to assist us on this count by helping to alert Witta residents of this interest. Any assistance you can extend on this count would be appreciated. Mark Clayton Senior Curator, Social History. mark.clayton@qm.qld.gov.au Many thanks to your readers, in advance. Hearing test
Consider my surprise when during Hearing Awareness Week I cannot get a free hearing test done on my nine-year-old grand-daughter. We have been concerned for a while about her hearing, so I visited our doctor who told me to contact Hearing Australia at Maroochydore. I visited them to be told there are no free hearing tests for children, even thought the sign on the counter said ‘Free Hearing Tests in the area during hearing Awareness Week.’ It will cost $105.00 and this is not covered by Medicare.
Send your letter to email: editorial@gcnews.com.au fax: 5438 7446 post: PO Box, 99, Beerwah, 4519
I would have thought it would be more important to look after the hearing of the young to prevent further problems in the future? Our only alternative is to go to the Nambour Hospital and we all know how long it could take to get an appointment for a hearing test. What has happened to our health system? When I was young, these simple check-ups were all done through the school, eyes, ears and teeth, now no one thinks our children should be the ones to be monitored before these health problems increase and cost the health system more. Linda Jenkins Peachester
of the poison. The late Dr Peter Rawlinson, Conservationist and Lecturer in Zoology at La Trobe University, Melbourne said of 1080: 'Animals can take up to four days to die from it. Others go out of control after they have ingested it – they tear around banging into trees. It is impossible to say the animal is not suffering.' EEGs on poisoned animals have produced results consistent with intense pain and distress. It's not only the poor dogs that will ingest this poison; other animals will also eat it and suffer this immense cruelty. Natalie Penny Beerwah

Now that all the shouting is over let us sit down and make democracy work as it should be worked. Our elected members are in government. Whether we agree with them or not, never lose sight of the fact that if something really displeases you then you have the avenue open to you to do something about it by going to your elected member and stating your grievance. Don’t sit on the sidelines and whinge about it… do something about it. That brings us to the recent and yet forthcoming Olympic Games. Australia sent the cream of our athletics into competition. On the day they gave it their best. Consider us, a very small population in a huge trackless country. Only just over 23 million of us. Think of the difficulties we face in even trying to come into areas for club competition, then zone, then state and finally national finals. The fact that we compete so well is a credit to this nation. Be proud of all our achievements whether it be sport, medicine, arts technology or whatever. Hold our heads high and chant AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE, but as is our character, always be the first to congratulate another achiever. Congratulations to all our recent and yet Paralympics competitors. I am so proud of you.
Thank you so much for our winning tickets to the Events Centre’s, Boogie Woogie with the Andrews Sisters Tribute Show. The article in the paper said it was a lively show and it certainly was. The girls gave it their all with amazing vocals, dressed in army outfits and beautiful dresses, they had the room entranced. The backing band entertained us, and the lady on the piano gave us her own solo performance, she was pretty spectacular. The place was full and everyone went home with a smile on their face. Everyone should check out your Facebook page and enter your competitions. Thanks again Sheila Squires

Loch Ness monster?
Claytons Towing Maleny had a call from an insurance company to go and help out a bloke who had his car run away. He last saw it floating off into Baroon Pocket Dam until it sunk. See next week's edition for full story.
To the girls finishing grade twelve from a girl who hardly remembers
Hey girl, you're graduating! Scary stuff huh? But it’s exciting too. You can’t wait to leave school forever and finally start the next chapter of your life. But you still have to get through the last few months of exams, formal and stress. Just don’t let the stress take over. I have very few memories from my last few months of grade twelve and it has a lot to do with stress. Stress is a funny thing. It makes you do things you wouldn’t normally do; things like snapping and yelling at people for no reason other than that you’re stressed. But sometimes it’s worse than yelling at people. My sole focus during the last few months was to drop two dress sizes by formal. Why? Because I was stressed. My whole world was changing and I didn’t know how to handle it or tell anyone about it. I was graduating, I was moving away for uni, I was scared. My stress made me feel as though the only thing I could control was how much I weighed and what size clothes I wore. I can hardly remember term 3 and 4 of grade twelve because I was so focused on losing weight that I couldn’t concentrate on much else. I want to remember every last moment of my last few months of high school but I can’t. Don’t let the same thing happen to you.
it
If you're feeling stressed or anxious or depressed about graduating or anything else, please, talk to somebody. It doesn’t matter how big or small this thing you’re going through is just tell someone. They might not completely understand but they’ll do the best they can. Never feel like you have to deal with everything on your own; you don’t. Grade twelve is hard but you will get through it. Just make sure you’ll remember it. If you are struggling to find someone to talk to try: • www.eheadspace.org.au • www.beyondblue.org.au • www.nationaleatingdisorders.org • http://youthexcel.com.au/ • Your local pastor or youth pastor e.g Mick Spann: mickspann@live.com.au Hannah Lydeamore Beerwah

A World Suicide Prevention Day event is being planned for Tesch Park in Maleny on Friday, September 9 at 10.00am. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Connect, Communicate and Care’ – to raise awareness of support services in our community and to encourage people in our community to listen, care and seek help. The event will be opened with an Acknowledgement of Country with Aunty Beverly Hand and will feature Soraya Saraswati who will talk about her new book, ‘Shining Through; from Grief to Gratitude’, and Kate Lane, founder of a new mental health service Blue Heart Support. The event is just one of the initiatives from the ‘Our Towns & Communities Matter Project’ which commenced in May this year to support Hinterland communities in the prevention of suicide. Other initiatives include: • the formation of three Hinterland based working groups to progress projects that increase support and connection and; • completed training for over 50 people including teenagers, RSL representatives and neighbourhood centre volunteers in ASIST and SafeTALK to help them to support people having thoughts of suicide. On Reflection at VIANTA Arts 'On Reflection' is a selection of photographs taken by Michele Deveze, of reflected images; of images that engender reflection. You can reflect on 'On Reflection' at VIANTA Arts, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah, from September 4 to October 2. Michele said: “Narcissism aside, reflection has always fascinated me – the known, the tangible, the commonplace: represented inverse, converse, reverse, opposite, distorted, contorted, shattered, decomposed, recomposed, reconfigured, redefined, retooled, respooled, refined. “On reflection we reconsider events - past or future; we consider the facets, the multiple variations of what could have happened, of what might happen, the endless possibilities of a mind in free flight; we rehearse, we rescript, we reinvent the memory, or the possibility. We review, we revisit, we redefine. “Reflection is a kaleidoscope of images, of thoughts, of memories, of essences and items, endowing eternal energy on an unperturbed surface; reflection is dynamism in reverie. It is the unexpected displacement of an image, or a thought; the replacement of the known or the expected, with the unknown and unexpected. “Come and enjoy the photographs while sipping the best coffee in the Sunshine Coast, and indulging in one of Steve's tempting snacks, Michele said”. National reseller of locally produced product
In the Garden with Brownie
Jobs for the yard in September
Business feature Frank Fenson has recently joined the increasing ranks of national Transportable Shade Shed resellers. Even though the company is locally based, interest in their variety of products has been rapidly spreading nationally – and through the collaboration with Saver6.com, also appealing to an international market. Based in Canberra, Frank is keen to market his product to all tiers of potential business. Given that he is located in the government heartland of our national capital, Frank has been following numerous leads; from quotes to cover the vehicle assets of government workers to approaching actual government departments impressed with the adaptability of the products. Building on the products reputation as a preferred supplier to mines and regional councils, and built to high Australian standards and compliance rated, the sheds can also be built at any time to suit company specifications and specific contracts. A welder by trade with over 25 years’ experience; Frank was interested in setting up a business where he could be his own boss as well as establishing a legacy business for his children. Even though he has only recently become a reseller, he has had a lot of interest in the Australian designed and manufactured product, with sales already under his belt in a relatively short period of time. “The staff at Transportable Shade Sheds have been great. Tyler and the team have been really helpful and I can always get them on the phone if I have a questions or inquiry. If I’ve needed anything they get onto it straight away,” said Frank. Seeing an ad for the product range and opportunities posted on Facebook, Frank got chatting to a mate over a beer about investing opportunities. A plan was hatched to become resellers and after discussions with the team at Transportable Shade Sheds, ‘Rocky and Frank Shade Sails’ was established. Frank and his business partner have big plans to sell the product with active strategies for trade show appearances and bids for government contracts in the pipeline. Like many of the small business owners working with Transportable Shade Sheds, Frank was impressed by the quality, durability and adaptability of the product along with the almost unlimited potential for use. The range of products is available in various designs and finishes using the highest quality Australian manufactured materials, including fully galvanised steel and genuine colorbond sheeting. Transportable Shade Sheds can provide the perfect cover for numerous requirements such as cars, boats, caravans, pools, agricultural uses or livestock. Wind rated, engineered planned and certified, they can be used as carports, patios and entertaining areas to offer protection from the elements and extreme weather. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the A.C.T. area please contact Frank via social media or on 0415 552 801. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area, are keen to be your own boss or look at business option that may work well with your current industry then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620.

• Grow any herbs now – except coriander (it’s getting too late and it will bolt to seed). • Grevilleas will be flowering away. Cut flowers for inside the house, this will also promote new growth and better plant health. • Prune edible fig trees. Be very vigorous – one-third can be cut off. Figs are only produced on new wood of the new season’s growth. Give them a good feed of general fertiliser. • It could be a few months before we get more good soaking rains and the drying September winds will suck the moisture from bare soil, so mulch your gardens to keep in the available water. • Dig up and divide canna lilies. Water them in well with a seaweed solution. • It’s a good month to start a sub-tropical fruit orchard – plant mango, pawpaw, avocado, custard apple, carambola and tamarillo. • Spray your flowering mangoes with Mancozeb or a copper-based fungicide to prevent the disease anthracnose. • Watch out for lawn weeds – especially bindi-eye, clover and flatweed (or cats ear). Vegetables - Plant carrot, choko, zucchini, sweet potato, cucumber, eggplant, beans, lettuce, radish, spring onion, squash, tomato, beetroot, capsicum, kohl rabi, okra, pumpkin, rockmelon, rosella, silver beet, sweet corn, and watermelon. Flowers - Plant alyssum, bedding begonia, cosmos, marigold, boronia, salvia, petunia, aster, amaranthus, celosia, phlox, portulaca, sunflower, torenia, zinnia, ageratum, gloxinia, impatiens, calendula, californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, coleus, dahlia, everlasting daisy, gaillardia, verbena, gazania, gerbera, kangaroo paw, nasturtium, rudbeckia and snapdragon.

From the churches Ps Aaron Jackson - Church on the Rise
Change is the only constant
Change is all around us. In my five-minute commute to the office each day, I drive past change both morning and afternoon. There are road works, and the progress of those road works, fruit stalls with new specials, notice boards with encouraging messages, change is all around us. There is also the change we want to implement in our personal lives. Eat less, sleep more, save money, exercise, change of diet, and the list goes on. In life we find external change easier to accept because a lot of the time it doesn’t have an immediate effect on our time or space. We all want to better ourselves, so why do we find the process of change so confronting. The reason is because once we have decided to make a change we also need to become accountable, and that is uncomfortable. If we truly yield to change, the GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

season of discomfort is replaced with a season of ease, but then the process must begin again, because with change comes growth. Change can come in many and varied forms such as trials, challenges, heart break and victories and yet all these areas can produce benefit in our lives, hopefully for the better. There is a time to plant a time to reap, a time to live and a time to die, a time to laugh and a time to mourn. The bible says consider it all joy, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. Change challenges our convictions and our faith. While there is no joy in cancer, bankruptcy and other things we face, there is joy when we find rest for our souls through Christ Jesus, no matter the circumstance. The peace that God gives, surpasses human understanding, it’s a peace that guards your heart and guides your steps. God through the bible gives us wisdom to handle change. Change is inevitable. But how change changes you, is your call. Change will either make you better or make you bitter, the choice is up to you. Amen

Kevin Beasley’s team got up by 13. Overall Glasshouse won by 8 shots. Next week’s game is home to Solander Lakes. I encourage all club members to come and watch. If we win this game we win division 5 Pennant for 2016. As of October 1, next year’s bowls memberships will be open to pay. This year the new fee will be $85.00. You have until the end of December to pay. Our Mixed Fours Spring Carnival will he held Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16. Nomination forms are available at our bowls office, $55.00 per person includes green fees and lunch for both days. Should be a great weekend! 12 teams are already down. At least another two to four teams are needed. For those bowlers that have the internet or use smart phones, you may want to take note of the following. Our club is now on the site travellingbowler.com. It tells you where our club is situated and what days we play bowls at our club, cost, dress etc. It is great for visitors. If you download this app you will be able to use it yourself if you are travelling and wanting to find out if there is a bowling green in the area. Great concept, this site will only get bigger as more clubs join. Very simple, go to travellingbowler. com and follow instructions on how to download this app onto your phone. Nominations are being taking for the Men’s B Singles and Mixed Pairs. The closing date is Thursday, September 8. Saturday, September 3, at 9.00am is our Annual General Meeting. Again we need more people to put their hand up and help out on the board and in the office. Bowls coaching is on from Sunday 10.30am to 12.00noon every week. Bowlers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Come along for a roll, it is great fun. The numbers attending are going up each week which is great! AUGUST 31 2016 |

Beerwah Bulldogs rugby league senior teams make two grand finals
Contributed by Mark Brandon After the weekend, Beerwah Bulldogs have cemented two of their top sides in the SCGRL 2016 grand finals. On Saturday, the Div 2 men's senior team travelled to Yandina to play Mary Valley Stags in the preliminary final, and came away with an extremely hard fought win 22-18. They will now play the Rob Brough coached Kawana team at the new look mini stadium at Maroochydore on Saturday. Kick off at 2.15pm, both teams have met twice this year for a win each. This game should be an absolute great game, with both sides dominating the competition throughout the 2016 season, Beerwah managed to take out the minor premiership. Also on Friday night at the Sunshine Coast Rugby League presentation night, Dan Kidd, the lock forward was awarded the player of the year, from the 16 team comp, along with this Nathan Robards, the left wing for Beerwah, who won two awards for the top try scorer for Div 2, with 42 tries, and also the overall top try scorer from all divisions. The Beerwah u18’s Div 2 team also have made it to their grand final after beating Noosa, 64-7 a team who they hadn’t beaten all year. They will play off this Friday night at Maroochydore 8.30pm against Coolum. Both teams have done their club and district extremely proud.
Lea Garner, Ash Matthews, Cheryl Jepson, Lyn Steele, Barb Whitfield and Frank Buckley shared the winnings

Witta Tennis Three mighty black belts Three young girls received their Mighty Black Belts at MF Martial Arts on Sunday, August 21. Here at MF Martial Arts we have created a white-black belt grading curriculum for younger children. This allows children from as young as six years of age to strive and accomplish this goal. This is their first stepping stone to the big wide world of martial arts! Although this particular black belt may not be world recognised, to them and their families it may be their child's biggest accomplishment in life so far. Ashlee, Marley and Videlle are all eight-yearsold and have been training with us for almost 2 ½ years. This Mighty Black Belt represents that they will to never give up, and will always strive to do more than is required. But it also demonstrates that these three young achievers show black belt attitude at school, at home and in the Dojo. It also represents their amazing black belt self control and respect. Our young stars are now off to start their junior journey and to one day obtain their Junior Black Belts and eventually be awarded with their Adults 1st Degree Black Belt Certification.
They may have a long way ahead of them. But they are off to a winning start in life. Congratulations from us all! We look forward to working with you all for many years to come. What do black belts never do? “Black Belts never give up,” said Ashlee, Marley and Videlle. For new members please call 1800 840 403 for further information.
Witta Wagtails put in a good performance. There were some close games and quite a few deuces, but not enough to secure a win against Kawana Slammers. Thanks to Christine, Janet, Gerry and Sonia. The Wildcats were up against Eumundi Echo. It was even at the half way mark but all it takes is a few missed shots and then it goes down the gurgler. Pauline, Annie, Stacey and Libby did their best but couldn’t catch up. The score was 3-5 sets, 34-41. Whistlers played against Nambour Nemesis. It was cold at Witta, we needed a bit of warming up. So we warmed up with good rallies. We enjoyed good tennis and morning tea and we won which is even better. Score was 38-30 games, 5-3 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Aki Lepper, Brenda Warner and Maree Hooley. It was an all Witta Affair at Witta Tennis on Sunday, August 28. In the VETS match - Witta Wompoos managed to edge out the Witta Wikings by 8 sets to 4 and 62 games to 42 - well played Wompoos - Anthony, Hayden, Andrew, Ernie , Paula and Liz! Social tennis: Monday 8.00am and Saturday 1.00pm, all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

Just for Laughs A graveside player
As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologised to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know
what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man. And as I played ‘Amazing Grace’, the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen anything like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for 20 years." Apparently, I'm still lost... Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 31/08/2016 VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The beginning of the month sees a Virgo Solar Eclipse, however the Sun has negative encounters with Saturn and Neptune. This means life can slip, like shifting sands, and you learn to adjust to things that are different, uncertain and others not in agreement with you. Much is caused by Mercury being retrograde through to September 22. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The big news is that this month Jupiter leaves the sign of Virgo and enters your diplomatic sign. From September 10 there should be opportunities to expand your own life. Get out there and advance your view points, pursue your wide goals, and embrace selfdevelopment. You may also get the travel bug! However, wait until Mercury goes direct. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Mercury is retrograde in your social zone until September 22. This has always been the way the Universe gets us to clean out our closets and redo our filing system. Perhaps there is a need to upgrade your computer. Financial concerns also need attention. Any tough decision is easier if you involve a respected friend for practical choices. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With Mercury retrograde in your career sector, until September 22, have patience with regard to any change of job or requesting a promotion. This is more a time requiring review and revision. Going over old details may help your overall life plan. Anyway, wait until Mercury is direct after September 22. New Moon Eclipse sees sacrifice.

TAURUS April 21 – May 22 As Jupiter is leaving the sign of Virgo to enter Libra in your sector of work, health and service, this means a week that may involve government bureaucracy. Perhaps it just means attending to your paper work and tax returns. As the week continues there is a friendly influence with co-workers and service people. Pets bring you joy. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 From September 1 to 10 there is a stressful energy between Saturn and Neptune. This will impact on recent developments at home and in your family life regarding security issues. It may have to do with a move or renovation project. Family members are coming and going, changing the dynamic of home. Good advisors help now. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Mercury has started its retrograde period until September 22. Stay cautious and conservative in communications. Reread details, contracts, deals and paper work. This may be a time to review a new course of study or local involvement. Staying on course with what you start may be the hard part. Don’t take on too much and exhaust yourself. LEO July 23 – August 22 There is a big shift for you this month as Jupiter leaves your financial zone and by September 10 enters Libra in your sector of new communication information. Jupiter thankfully will bring opportunities to make progress through your speech and promoting. You should shine as a friendly neighbourhood Ambassador. Some delays.

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Because there is a Virgo Solar Eclipse in a tough position to Saturn and Neptune, this means a powerful six month’s impact in your life, about future agendas. The future path, after September 22, when Mercury goes direct, should see you move into lively new territory. Proceed cautiously and conservatively. Don’t be discouraged. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Under the eclipse pattern of the first week, there is bound to be some people who oppose you, or your ideas. However, you are moving ahead nicely in a new financial phase and so some old friends will be left behind. As the New Moon falls in your shared assets, a strong financial theme continues to your goals or your dreams. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The main theme for you, up to September 22 is partnerships, committed relationships and perhaps a marriage if single! It is very worthwhile reviewing all your long term partnerships whether business or personal. This Mercury retrograde period to September 22 is a good test to review your solid friendships. ARIES March 21 – April 20 So Thursday sees a Virgo Solar Eclipse in a difficult aspect to Saturn and Neptune. Not that you are interested, however, this is called the ongoing mutable square! This means while there is a new potential in your area of work, health and service, it does come with the challenge of setting up efficient long term routines. Keep realistic.
