Well, you may have noticed this edition is a little bigger than usual, which is obviously to do with the upcoming election. This week we put a couple of very basic questions to all of the candidates that we thought readers would find interesting.

The first question is: Given the public’s general distrust of politics, why would you want to become/ remain a politician? And the second is: If elected, what will you do to bring down the cost of living for people in your electorate?

Hopefully you will find their responses enlightening.

I just wanted to also mention that

However, be warned that from the next edition we will definitely be in what I like to call the season of festive preparation, so plenty about Christmas 2020 will definitely start creeping into our pages.

Glamorous Glassies gala While this year’s Logies may not have happened, the Member for Glass House Andrew Powell made sure our very own gala event - the Glassies - took place recently with social distancing in place at Hideaway Weddings in Beerwah.

The evening brought together small business owners and employees and the local chambers of commerce to celebrate all that small business is and does for the region.

“For a while there I thought we weren’t going to be able to hold a Glassies gala as we usually have the event in May to coincide with Small Business Week, but we had to postpone due to social distancing and isolation requirements,” Mr Powell said.

“I’m glad we did because we had a full house last night – we met the COVID

cap. So many nominated businesses and employees turned up to celebrate.

“As always, Glass House locals cast an extraordinary number of votes for the nominated businesses and employees – nearly 4,000,” he said.

While the silver Glassy is based off the number of votes received, the bronze and gold awards are selected by a panel that includes the presidents of the chambers.

“It is always difficult to choose those winners due to the quantity and quality of entries, and we deliberate over the options for a long time before picking the winners,” Mr Powell said.

The silver winners are chosen by popular vote.

Next Bruce Highway upgrade starts before end of year

Andrew Powell In the lead up to each election GC&M News offers all candidates the opportunity to advise readers that they are running and to introduce themselves.

Having been the LNP Member for Glass House for the past 11 years, Andrew Powell is asking readers once again to vote for him.

Andrew said that Glass House was the best place to live, work and play which was why he put his hand up to represent the electorate 11 years ago and in every election since. He is keen to continue what he describes as fighting for families, farmers and small businesses.

“This election is unlike any other. With COVID recovery at the front of every voter’s mind, it’s more important than ever to elect a government with a plan to not only manage the pandemic but to drag us out of the economic recession we are in. Deb Frecklington, the LNP and I offer that plan,” he said.

Andrew highlighted improvements he and the LNP had achieved including new traffic lights on Steve Irwin Way at Reed Street and Bowen Road in Glass House Mountains and new traffic lights (under construction) at Beerwah State School.

He also cited $5 million worth of upgrades to Maleny-Kenilworth Road between Lees Road and Booloumba Creek at Cambroon, which would start soon, and a new concrete bridge over the Mary River at Conondale.

“Local frontline services have been improved

including a new police station at Maleny and additional police on the beat,” Andrew said.

He said he had achieved increased financial support for local schools and community groups as well as the installation of flashing school zone safety lights at almost all local schools.

Andrew said with your help, he will: • Help grow local jobs and drive down the cost of living on electricity, rego and water.

• Ensure on time, on-budget delivery of the Beerburrum to Nambour rail duplication.

• Deliver even more police and police vehicles.

• Increase public transport services across the electorate.

• Secure further upgrades to Maleny-Kenilworth Road, Steve Irwin Way and Beerburrum Road.

• Build a hydrotherapy centre in Maleny.

• Provide funding for End ED’s eating disorder treatment facility in Mooloolah Valley.

“Glass House needs a strong and experienced representative to steer us through the COVID economic recovery when the health crisis ends,” Andrew said.

“We need a government that has a vision to rebuild our economy and create decades of secure jobs. Only the LNP offers that.”

Work will start before Christmas to add lanes in both directions on the Bruce Highway between Caboolture and Beerburrum.

The $662.5 million jointly funded upgrade, which will deliver six lanes on the Bruce Highway from the Caboolture-Bribie Island Road to Steve Irwin Way (exit 163), will create more than 660 jobs when construction ramps up.

The project is jointly funded, with the Australian Government committing $530 million and the Queensland Government committing $132.5 million.

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said that anyone driving the highway regularly between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast had experienced the congestion between Beerburrum and Elimbah.

“The work starting soon will widen an 11km section of the highway from four lanes to six lanes and replace ten bridges over five creek crossings with wider, higher bridges,” Mr Bailey said.

The project is one of four major Bruce Highway upgrades that would be under simultaneous construction between Brisbane and Gympie, with a combined value of more than $2.8 billion and supporting more than 2,000 jobs.

The project is expected to be completed in early 2023, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Acciona Infrastructure Project Australia, formerly known as Lendlease Engineering Pty Ltd, has been selected to complete the first contract of works for the upgrade.

90 year artistic journey

By Sonia Isaacs Clark To celebrate his 90th birthday, we caught up with acclaimed artist, naturist, water diviner and all-round interesting character Ken Wenzel to find out more about his life.

Ken grew up in Myrtletown, North Brisbane. He said that as a young child he had been a gifted musician and enjoyed playing classical piano.

However, a playground accident at age 11 left him with brain damage and lifelong coordination issues. It also meant he was forced to stop his schooling 15 months before the end of primary school.

At 14, Ken was inspired to start painting and at 15 he won the ‘Sunday Mail’ art competition. His lifelong interest in painting was piqued.

Ken said that around this time he got his first job as an office boy at the glamourous Wintergarden Theatre in Brisbane, before drawing on his emerging artistic skills to become an accomplished costume jewellery painter.

“War time in Brisbane was an interesting time to grow up,” Ken said.

“A big fad at the time was to have small jewellery pieces like earrings and pendants created by painting on the back of Perspex and similar materials.

We would have set subjects such as desert scenes or flowers to paint, and I quite enjoyed it.”

He painted costume jewellery for the next 5-6 years and during this time several of his pieces won prizes at the annual Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland show (the Ekka).

“It probably took me 10 years to get fit again after my childhood accident, though unfortunately I was never able to make a full recovery. However, even during this time I spent all my spare time painting,” Ken said.

With limited ability to work due to his coordination impairment, Ken went on to work at a local plywood factory and then with industrial manufacturer James Hardie, picking up commissions here and there to paint. However, he did not have the confidence to fully pursue his artistic dreams.

Inspired by a fellow worker at James Hardie to follow his passion, Ken decided to take the plunge and devote his life to painting.

“Art was my life, so I decided finally to embrace it and knew I would either sink or swim! I became a professional artist in my early 40s and I haven’t looked back since,” Ken said.

In the 1970s Ken relocated to the hinterland and bought property at Booroobin, which has also provided an inspiration for some of his outstanding paintings.

Beautifully depicting the interplay of light and shade, and with a talent for capturing minute details in his gorgeous Australian landscape and coastline paintings, Ken describes his work as representational and traditional. He said that to be a good artist takes time and dedication to the craft.

“I love the Australian landscape and country, and painting the trees, watercourses and nature.

I also have enjoyed how my art has taken me to places all over the country.

Sometimes I would spend months interstate working on painting original scenes,” Ken said.

He spent many years exhibiting at Montville Art Gallery and said he had only recently decided to retire from painting.

With a few near-death experiences under his belt, including a lightning strike while in bed that just missed his head, Ken said he had loved living around the beautiful hinterland area and enjoyed the artistic and creative atmosphere and people.

Ken was joined by close friends and family for a celebratory gathering on September 27 at the Bribie Hotel.

Have your say on Coles, McDonald’s and a new petrol station in Beerwah The council and state government raised concerns about the impact of a significant increase in traffic flow around the Steve Irwin Way/Roys Road intersection with the original proposal.

As a result, the developer submitted amended plans earlier this month. As part of the amendments, the plans now show that the McDonald’s outlet and petrol station have been moved further apart, with a large green space area between them. Significant changes have also been made to the entry and exit road network to and from Steve Irwin Way and Roys Road.

When the original applications were made public, an article in Glasshouse Country & Maleny News created considerable interest. There was a wide range of views from local residents and businesses from enthusiastic support for more jobs to concern that the town would be split into two commercial areas, with the main CBD area losing its prominence.

Development applications for a Coles supermarket, a petrol station and a McDonald’s in Beerwah have progressed to the public submission stage.

Two applications for the land at the corner of Roys Road and Steve Irwin Way were lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council in September last year, along with an application to split the entire 16.4 hectare 02 Photo block into Montages four different land parcels.

After period APPROACH when the council asked for more VIEW 02 a - NORTHERN information and requested changes to the designs, the developer, Coles Group Property Developments, has presented its final proposals to be assessed against the planning scheme.

As part of that assessment, the council now invites the community to make submissions on their thoughts and opinions of the development proposed for the site.

The land is not currently set aside for a supermarket EXISTING or fast food/takeaway development as it is zoned for medium impact industry.

Glasshouse Mountain SES volunteers will be better equipped to deal with climbers in trouble and get an upgraded training facility thanks to Energex funding.

Local Sunshine Coast Energex staff have contributed $10,000 towards the redevelopment of the SES vertical rescue (VR) training tower to assist volunteers with training and preparation vital to helping anyone who finds themselves in danger while visiting the area.

SES area controller Sally Bloomfield thanked Energex for their support. She said the funding provided would go towards vital upgrades to the VR training tower at the Glasshouse Mountains SES facility on Beerwah Parade at Beerwah.

This would enable VR operators from Glasshouse SES and other units in the area to safely continue with training and competency maintenance activities.

“With the majority of VR operators being members of the Glasshouse Mountains SES group, this will mean they can train without having to travel out of the Glasshouse area,” Sally said.

Sunshine Coast Council is also contributing to the redevelopment of the tower, with the work anticipated to start soon.

Energex Sunshine Coast area manager Peter Lougheed said Glasshouse SES volunteers were among the hardest working in the country carrying out some daring rescues in the region’s mountainous terrain.

“The kinds of rescues this amazing group of volunteers undertake on the sides of cliffs and deep into the vast landscape is nothing short of incredibly brave,” Peter said.

“There’s plenty of people who owe their lives to these volunteers and we are proud to be able to assist them to continue their work with funding to upgrade the training tower.”

Sally also urged people to take care and be well prepared if they going to the plethora of hiking tracks in the local area in the coming weeks and to ensure they only undertake activities that suit their fitness, skill and experience level.

Recycling for Glasshouse Country locals just got a whole lot easier with the recent opening of the new Containers for Change refund depot in Beerwah’s industrial estate at 37 Moroney Place.

Ken Noye, CEO for Container Exchange, the notfor-profit organisation that runs the Containers for Change scheme in Queensland, said Queenslanders had collected almost 3 billion containers across the state, an effort that had contributed to a 54% decrease in beverage container litter.

“A key to improving recycling rates is providing customers with accessible refund points they can use to find the cash they need from their containers,” Ken said.

“The opening of the new depot will give the people of Beerwah and the surrounding areas easier access to participate in the Containers for Change scheme.”

The Containers for Change scheme pays refunds on eligible containers in cash, via EFT or your Paypal account if customers have registered for a scheme ID on the Containers for Change website.

Charities and community groups can promote their scheme ID so supporters can donate their refund to their chosen organisation by quoting its scheme ID when they make returns.

Business Buzz Simply retiring after many years

After 19 fabulous years in Maleny running her clothing, accessory and lingerie business, Di Weightman from Simply Stylish is hanging up her handbag.

After battling Parkinson’s disease for many years, the time is right for Di to retire. She wanted to thank all her lovely customers and all those involved in the numerous charity events and fashion shows she helped organise over the years.

Di organised her first charity fundraiser working as a hairdresser on Thursday Island in the 1990s. The success of that first fashion parade gave her the confidence to put on gala events and fundraisers. These events became renowned around the Sunshine Coast and hinterland for community involvement and fundraising, and were just a lot of fun for all involved.

“Since moving to Maleny it has been great fun organising charity events and fashion shows through the business.

I’ve been able to help raise funds and be involved with some wonderful groups around the area including the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary and Maleny Catholic Women’s Association as well

Di Weightman from Simply Stylish is set to retire as numerous local fundraisers and Melbourne Cup events over the years where we would dress our models from head to toe,” Di said.

“It was also great fun to have locals model the outfits and I think all the girls involved over the years enjoyed it.”

The business is not closing down but is being taken over by a local hinterland woman who plans to revamp and rebrand the store as Flaunt Maleny.

Di would like to thank everyone for a wonderful time and says she will still be around but will now be concentrating on her health.

Business News Multi-million dollar investment in Beerwah Pandemic or no pandemic, the future of Beerwah as a regional commercial and retail centre is looking brighter with the announcement of a major expansion to The Beerwah Marketplace shopping centre.

Village Fair Investments Pty Ltd, which owns the shopping centre, has lodged a development application with the Sunshine Coast Council for a further 3,200m2 of retail floor space and 118 new car parking spaces.

Village Fair Investments managing director Rick Abrahams said the development had been in the pipeline for a while and successive meetings with council planning and economic development staff had given the business the confidence to proceed.

“We are excited to showcase an expanded retail and commercial hub for Beerwah,” Mr Abrahams said.

“This will be a substantial investment in the region and has the potential to employ many local residents.”

The expansion has been made possible by the recent purchase of a 4,000m2 vacant block on Pine Camp Road adjoining the existing centre.

According to the application planning report, the land is appropriately zoned for a shopping centre, is consistent with the Beerwah Local Plan and will not involve a department store, meaning that the development is designated as ‘code assessable’.

The plans show that there will be a new building extending up into the

hill, meaning the vacant block will be excavated and the new ground floor retail floor space (3,200m2 in total) will be at the same level as the existing Cignall store.

On top of the new building will be a 118-space car park with direct access off Pine Camp Road and vehicle access down to the existing car park.

This northern access point is likely to significantly improve the traffic flow within the centre, alleviating the existing traffic pinch-points at the current two entry/exits on Peachester Road.

Although no details have been given as to who might take up the new space, Village Fair Investments asset manager Judy Dewar is open to all possibilities.

“The retail mix is yet to be fully determined,” Ms Dewar said.

“Once Sunshine Coast Council has approved our application we will be in a position to finalise our tenancy mix.

“We welcome community views on what they believe is further needed in the region. This could be retail, government services, medical or educational.”

No timeframe was given for the start of work but Ms Dewar indicated it would be “as soon as practicable after council approves the application”.

Mr Abrahams said Village Fair Investments was proud to be able to grow this major shopping centre for Beerwah.

“We believe Beerwah has a very bright and prosperous future,” Mr Abrahams said.

“This next multi-million dollar stage is testament to our ongoing commitment to the community.”

By Sonia Isaacs Clark GC&M News published an article in its September 2 edition about the Queensland Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships being hosted by Sunshine Orienteers, held on the weekend (September 12-13).

In recognition of the tireless efforts of one of the club’s foundation members, long-term outdoor adventure enthusiast and former Peachester resident Gordon Howitt, the main event - a long course ride throughout Beerburrum State Forest in Glass House Mountains - was named in his honour as a memorial event almost a year to the day after his death at age 88.

Daughter Dawn Clarke said that when she was growing up her dad was a tremendous amount of fun, always full of adventure and always encouraging those around him to achieve their individual potential.

Dawn remembers her dad taking all of his four daughters (Karen, Annette, Christine and Dawn), aged 10 and under, mountaineering, ice climbing, rock climbing and camping. Even as young children their dad always encouraged them to do anything regardless of gender stereotypes of the time.

“He excelled at whatever he put his mind to and was a classic overachiever! There was no challenge he wasn’t up for. He was a go-getter and a radical thinker,” Dawn said.

With wife Cath, Gordon was a tireless advocate for the sport of orienteering, which he first took up in the mid1970s, and rogaining (long distance, cross country navigation that can last up to six, 12 or 24 hours), which he took up in the 1990s. He would happily compete and often beat competitors more than half his age,

Gordon Howitt winning numerous state and national titles.

Gordon initially started orienteering in 1976 after being introduced to it by daughter Christine. Orienteering required fitness, map reading skills and an ability to think on the run, which were all skills that Gordon epitomised.

“Dad was heavily involved in orienteering for over 40 years, as both a sportsperson, mentor to others and in the behind the scenes volunteer work of mapping and setting courses along with organising local and state orienteering events,” Dawn said.

Regarded as one of the founding fathers of Sunshine Orienteers, Gordon with John Earls helped establish the club in 1999. He is also remembered for introducing and developing mountain bike orienteering on the Sunshine Coast, as well as his work teaching orienteering in many schools in the Sunshine Coast region.

Dawn remembers Gordon getting his first mountain bike in his 70s and throughout his life he firmly believed that age was no barrier to achievement.

His interest in the sport of rogaining continued well into his late 70s when he would still have younger athletes ask to be paired with him for 24-hour rogaine events, which are physically demanding at any age. He completed his last rogaine event at age 78.

Believing old is only a state of mind and continuing to display his personal mantra of herculean determination, Gordon went on to beat more records when he walked into Everest Base camp at 17,650 feet, (5360m) at the age of 83 years five months and 17 days young!

Long-time readers of GC&M News may remember Gordon appearing on the front cover of the June 4, 2014 edition (pictured left) after his trip to Everest.

Dawn said that the current COVID-19 travel restriction meant her sisters Annette and Christine, who live interstate, could not able to attend the memorial event in their dad’s honour.

However, Dawn, her sister Karen, their grown children Amy, Lance, Jessie and

Katharine along with Gordon’s wife Cath and great grandson Jaxon were all due to compete in the event as a fitting tribute to the remarkable life of their dad, granddad, great granddad and husband - the well revered, fun-loving adventure spirited Gordon Howitt.

Queensland mountain bike orienteering championships Sunshine Orienteers hosted the Queensland Mountain Bike Orienteering (MTBO) Championships on September 12-13.

Committee member Deb Gordon said it was an awesome weekend with a great turnout. Of the 106 registered entries on the day, Deb said the long course Gordon Howitt memorial event through Beerburrum State Forest at

Glass House Mountains was the best attended, with 85 riders competing in the course that took between one to three hours.

The weather was perfect on the day and, in a fitting tribute to the legacy of Gordon, winners were given handcarved trophies he had created, she said.

“We felt privileged to have been able to host this event and are grateful to our army of volunteers, our competitors and Gordon’s family,” Deb said.

Six members of Gordon’s family attended on the day of the memorial event and his wife Cath Howitt assisted in the presentation of the winner’s trophy.

Life membership recognition surprise

In recognition of his many years of service to Glasshouse Country Bowls Club, longterm member and current chairman Jim (Jimmy) Tatum (pictured) was recently surprised and delighted to be granted the rare honour of life membership of the club.

Club secretary Bruce Angus said the club rarely granted this privilege, so this distinction for Jim was extremely special and a fitting way to acknowledge Jim’s unwavering dedication and leadership not only to all aspects of the club but to the sport of lawn bowls and the community he loves.

The award was also a way of recognising Jim’s significant contribution to the successful amalgamation of Beerwah Bowls Club and Glasshouse Mountains Bowls Club in 2000 to create Glasshouse Country Bowls Club. It also pays tribute to his tireless 20-year commitment to the club. The motion to grant Jim a life membership was put forward at the club’s AGM on September 12 and passed with 100% approval.

The biggest challenge was to reach the point of presentation without Jim having a clue about it, as the committee were keen for it to be a surprise.

This proved to be a logistical behindthe-scenes feat as the confidential motion needed to be circulated prior to the meeting without Jim, who is chairman of the management committee, knowing.

“Eventually our plan worked and at the AGM Jim was desperately flipping through the annual report and notices of motion to work out why he could not see what I was talking about regarding a confidential motion,” Bruce said.

“It was priceless to see the smile on his face when it all clicked.

“His character is such that he never asks for anything in return but just keeps giving. All our members, including our juniors, are lucky that we have Jim as an example for future leaders to follow,” Bruce said.

Jim said he was stumped for words when he was presented with the award and he felt incredibly humbled and grateful.

“It is a great honour to be thought of by all my friends and members of Glass House Country Bowls Club and also Club Glass House, our parent club. How everyone kept this a secret is beyond me,” Jim said.

Fire hydrants - visible and accessible As we are in bushfire season, it is important to remember that in emergencies firefighters may need to quickly locate water supplies.

Kirsty Levis, volunteer community educator from Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade, recently asked GC&M News to share updates on how the community can assist in keeping fire hydrants in working order.

Kirsty said she wanted to raise awareness about fire hydrants following a recent incident where firefighters from the brigade were dealing with a controlled burn. They had gone to fill up at the designated hydrant, only to find it filled with dirt and debris.

“It took our guys about 10 minutes to clear out the hydrant, so you can imagine in an emergency situation it can be critical that these resources are maintained,” Kirsty said.

“While fire hydrants are regularly maintained through scheduled services, it is also important that property owners and local residents consider some tips to assist with maintenance.”

Kirsty said hydrants were identified so that firefighters could locate them at

all hours. They were usually located on the nature strip and had a yellow lid. A blue cat’s eye on the road generally indicated their location on sealed roads. On unsealed roads (HR) or paths (HP) the hydrants were identified by marker posts at the fence line.

Kirsty’s tips for helping to keep fire hydrants easily visible and accessible include: 1. Don’t plant garden beds over the hydrants and keep it clear of any obstruction or debris including garden mulch.

2. Open the lid regularly to check and remove any debris, animals or obstructions and keep grass and other plants trimmed around the hydrant.

3. Don’t park any vehicles over them.

4. Report any faults or damage (Urban Utilities 13 23 64).

Art in the eye of the beholder Glass House Mountains artist Dianne Martin will be exhibiting her art works at Vianta Arts in Beerwah during October.

Dianne lives just behind one of the spectacular Glass House Mountains, so creative inspiration is never far away.

She says the area and other local artists inspire and support her desire to experiment with many painting mediums, although the softness and flow of watercolour remains a favourite.

Living in remote Australia for some years, Dianne became interested in photography and produced photographic postcards. She then experimented with watercolour as a medium to achieve an impressionist view of the stunning scenery.

She achieved some success and encouragement from entering art competitions in agricultural shows and in art awards, where she has been awarded first and third placings and highly commended, and has also been fortunate to sell works both locally and interstate.

Dianne joined the Landsborough Art Studio weekly group tutorials in 2015, has attended the University of Southern Queensland McGregor Summer Arts Retreat and sought private tutorial opportunities when travelling to broaden her knowledge and skills in various mediums.

Her travel destinations in Europe, the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand are reflected in her current works.

Her pieces often reflect an eclectic mix of mediums and presentation styles with the view that art is truly in the eye of the beholder.

Opening night for the exhibition is Friday, October 2 and the exhibition runs until November 1.

Vianta Arts is located in Simpson Street, Beerwah across from the Tower Green.

Woodies’ work appreciated Members of the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild (Woodies) have crafted several Finska sets, a cornhole board for bean bag toss games and two platform steps for patients to practise using their wheeled walkers to go up and down kerbs or steps at home.

These engagement resources are used by patients with complex cognitive issues, including dementia, being treated at the acute restorative care (ARC) unit at Nambour Hospital.

Lisa Roe, CEO of Wishlist, said the workmanship was beyond expectations.

“We are so grateful to the guild for turning this idea of donating wooden items to engage patients into a reality,” Lisa said.

We’re extending the JobKeeper Payment until 28 March 2021.

The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month.

There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff.

It’s part of our plan to keep business in business, and Australians in jobs.

Tourism volunteers celebrated Tourism volunteers at the Glass House Mountains and Montville visitor information centres recently cohosted brunch to celebrate 18 years of volunteering at Sunshine Coast hinterland information centres by Peachester locals Jeff Bodley and Rob Morris.

When it first started in 2002, the Glass House Mountains information centre was a yellow caravan set up in Matthew Flinders Park just off Steve Irwin Way. It was the first visitor information centre in the region. Jeff said that until then, many visitors would simply bypass the Glass House Mountains on their way up the coast not knowing what the mountains were or the history behind them.

Today Jeff and Rob, both aged 81 years, have shared the Indigenous and European history of the area with countless visitors looking to explore the region. While they both admit they’re still “trying to retire”, the time has come to hang up their hats on a successful 18-year stint of volunteering.

Rob, who like Jeff is a keen traveller, said what they had loved most “is meeting the people and finding out where they come from”.

“It’s a wonderful thing and if they come

from areas we’ve been to it makes it even more so,” Rob said.

They agree that there was no one size fits all response on what to do in the hinterland so they tailored their suggestions to suit each visitor.

“It’s about having a conversation and sending them to where we think is appropriate for that couple or family,” Jeff said.

Visit Sunshine Coast interim CEO Craig Davidson thanked Jeff and Rob for their long-term commitment to supporting and promoting tourism on the Sunshine Coast.

“Their passion throughout the years has been unwavering and we wish them the very best in their future endeavours,” Craig said.

Rob and Jeff will remain active members of the new Peachester Heritage Centre and local garden club and encourage others to get involved in volunteering.

“Rather than staying at home, get out and enjoy as much as you can in your life. Volunteering is a lot of fun,” Rob said.

Preparing for disaster resilience through connected neighbourhoods Following our recent articles about bushfire season preparation, we thought it timely to chat with Cathy Buck, Sunshine Coast Council coordinator disaster management, for useful tips on how local community members can connect and support each other to build resilient neighbourhoods to better prepare for extreme weather events.

Q: Why are neighbourhood connections so important in preparing for natural disasters?

There are three simple steps to ensure your household or business is prepared for extreme weather events. Step one is to have an emergency plan in place. Step two is to pack supplies (emergency and evacuation kits). Step three is to make sure your insurance is up to date. When you are next chatting to your neighbours, encourage them to do the same.

We know neighbourhoods that are aware of their disaster risks and connected to others in their local community are more likely to be able to respond and quickly recover to the ‘new’ normal of day-to-day living when disaster strikes. Our local communities are an important source of assistance to individuals and communities before, during and post disaster or emergency event.

Q: What types of resources/programs does the council have to facilitate these connections locally?

Council has been working with the Caloundra Community Centre’s Hinterland Community Development Program and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) to establish the Glasshouse Country Disaster Management Network.

This group of volunteers from local Glasshouse Country groups and

services are meeting in October to plan 2021 activities, including how, as a local community, they can best deliver disaster preparedness information during these difficult times with COVID-19 restrictions. Region-wide, our At Home in My Neighbourhood program aims to nurture socially cohesive neighbourhoods. This program builds a sense of belonging and wellbeing and assists communities to become more resilient through encouraging social connections, neighbourhood improvement projects and sharing stories.

Things2Do Maleny Spring Fair 2020

Farm day experience

This Saturday, October 3, the Maleny Spring Fair 2020 is shaping up to be “bloomin’ marvellous” with a jam-packed day of plant and produce stalls, and workshop demonstrations plus a morning and afternoon program bursting with guest speakers sharing their knowledge on a range of engaging topics from fabulous flower arrangements, native plants and composting, to organic gardening tips and the importance of bees for successful vegetable and flower gardens. Head to the Maleny Showgrounds pavilion from 8.30am4pm and enjoy free entry and parking all day.

For those wishing to attend the guest speaker programs in the exhibition hall, arrive early to secure your spot as numbers for the morning (8.30am12noon) and afternoon (12.30-4pm) sessions are capped at 50 attendees.

For a very reasonable $10 per session visitors can tap into the wisdom of speakers such as Spencer Shaw from Forest Heart, horticulturist Mike Wells, tomato growing guru Ian Reimers, organic rose grower Caz Owens, former CSIRO divisional chief Dr Max Whitten and more.

The owners of the picturesque 80-hectare (200-acre) property Yabbaloumba Retreat at Cambroon near Kenilworth are throwing open their gates for their inaugural farm day experience on Saturday, October 3 from 9am-3pm.

Caloundra Mini Festival and Luminate!

With many people reassessing their career goals due to COVID-19, the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) is offering a free course for those wanting to sample higher education and explore study.

The university will run a series of twoday workshops at each of its campuses from early November.

Course coordinator Liz Davison said the course would cater for those 18 years and older who did not finish high school or may have not formally studied for many years.

The University Skills for You course helped to take away the unknown for those considering taking up tertiary study but unsure about what was involved, Ms Davison said.

The Caloundra Mini Festival featuring Luminate! will spread music love and light around the streets and venues of Caloundra from Thursday-Monday, October 1-5.

While Caloundra Music Festival may be off the cards this year, music lovers will still be able to enjoy a stellar line up of local talent including Anna and Jordan, Hayden Hack, MISMO TEMPO, Soula and more.

“The course is facilitated by experienced USC advisers who will focus on helping people recognise the transferable skills they have gained from work and life experience,” she said.

“There are no tests, assignments or exams. Instead the emphasis is on helping people build their confidence and develop new academic skills in a supportive group learning environment,” Ms Davison said.

At the end of the course, participants will explore potential study pathways and can arrange to have individual sessions with USC advisers to help develop study and career plans.

The two-day workshops will be held at the Sunshine Coast campus on November 17 and 18, Caboolture on November 24 and 25 and Moreton Bay on December 1 and 2.

Workbooks are free and there are no tuition fees.

Community Groups Beerwah JRLFC

The club will hold its AGM on Wednesday, October 14 at 7pm in the club house.

Beerwah Sportsground is looking great

The Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee is extremely proud of the excellent quality of its playing fields, which has been achieved with plenty of hard work by committee members who volunteer their time.

Regular use of the underground watering system, which was installed in 2019, along with aeration, top dressing, fertilising, weed control and lots of mowing in 2020 have brought the fields to their present condition.

The grounds committee has been assisted by an annual field management grant of $10,525 from the Sunshine Coast Council. Without it much of this work would not be affordable.

COVID-19 saw the grounds closed for some time and this too helped to improve the field standard.

The management committee would like to thank the council for the grant funding that has allowed some of the water bill to be paid off during the difficult time of closure.

The committee members are pleased that the grounds are now open again and Beerwah Junior Rugby League has started playing games. Other users and the community are welcome to come once more and enjoy the facilities.

Don’t forget that as well as the playing fields there are barbeques, fitness equipment and a playground open for the community to use.

Contributed Fiona Gray Since COVID our group had to stop all our events and markets with such a heavy heart as it is good for our members as well as our community to get together as we do.

So it was great to be able to come together again for Friday night bingo at the Peachester Hall recently. It was a lovely evening with some of our regulars back and some new faces.

Our next bingo night is Friday, October 9 at Peachester Hall and the jackpot goes up to $120!

Peachester Horticultural Society Contributed by Trish Bradford The last gathering was hosted by Pam and John Innes in their garden. A short meeting was held during morning tea with members speaking about their blooms displayed on the competition bench.

Trish Bradford showed off her gladioli explaining a little about its history. Many years ago there was a gladioli farm on the corner of Peachester and Old Peachester roads. After that, pineapples were grown there. For years gladiolus grew among the pineapples. Trish acquired some corms and she still has a couple growing today.

Clara Graham showed off her lovely white hibiscus bloom and had cuttings to share.

Results of the competition bench for August were first Trish Bradford on 20 points and a tie for second place by Suella Lanceley and Pam Innes on 16 points.

Members enjoyed wandering around the garden, admiring the spring blooms and collecting cuttings.

Pam has a large collection of potted plants and African violets. John’s collection of orchids made a splendid display. A few Dendrobiums were attached to trees, making another display.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, October 15 at 9.30am in the garden of Katrina Odgers.

Celebrating Probus Day Thursday, October 1 marks the International Day for Older Persons – a United Nations initiative that encourages the celebration of seniors in our community. The date also marks the launch of Probus Day. Established in Australia in 1976, Probus is a notfor-profit organisation with more than 110,000 members.

Probus is all about social connections in retirement.

Probus clubs provide the opportunity for retirees and semi-retirees to come together in their local community, make new friends and participate in a wide range of activities.

Rob Neary is president of the Probus Association of Queensland, which represents more than 11,000 members in Queensland’s Probus community.

Mr Neary said that during the pandemic, most Probus Club members remained connected with each other by phone or technology, minimising the increased risk of isolation and loneliness.

“Our clubs and their members are embracing the recent challenges with video conferencing regularly and, with restrictions permitting, many clubs are conducting their activities on a smaller scale complying with health guidelines and restrictions,” Mr Neary said.

“We are acutely aware that social contact is essential in today’s world, now more than ever. It is widely accepted that older persons who are members of social groups are less likely to develop mental health issues.

“Probus provides essential friendship-based social connections for older Australians,” he said.

Mr Neary encourages anyone approaching retirement, semi-retired or retired, to find out more about how Probus can help them extend their social circle and stay connected.

Women over 55 in housing stress Contributed by Viki Blaik Glass Housing 55 is a community group in the Glasshouse Country area seeking to gather data on the growing demographic of women aged over 55 who are experiencing housing stress or homelessness.

The purpose for gathering this data is to better understand the major factors contributing to housing stress in Glasshouse Country. The data will be used to assist with developing strategies on a local level to increase the range of affordable housing in the area with the intent for long-term stability and community inclusion.

Anyone who knows someone in this demographic experiencing housing stress, or is directly affected,

are asked to fill in a simple, two-minute survey, found on the Glass Housing 55 Facebook page. The survey can be filled in multiple times to represent different people. All responses are anonymous and remain confidential. The survey will close on October 30.

Hinterland Heritage Honor board restored

Weddings of yesteryear

Contributed by Elaine Reeves Readers may recall that the World War I honour board at the hall has been undergoing conservation and preservation work by Melanie Fihelly Conservation.

The work has now been completed and the board is looking as it probably would have when it was unveiled at a ceremony held on October 5, 1918.

The board is now back in its rightful place on the wall at the hall and will be ready for its role in Anzac Day proceedings in 2021.

Also receiving attention were two plaques affixed to small individual boards and located just beneath the honour board. These commemorate the donation of two flags from HMAS Australia to the hall in 1954 by Mrs Robert Fullerton.

One of these original flags still has a part to play on Anzac Day, being attached to one of the flag poles that flank the honour board.

Unfortunately, the other flag has gone missing, although it has now been replaced by a more modern flag on ceremonial occasions.

Thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council heritage levy – collection care program for making funds available for this work via its grants program.

Limited activities at the hall have recommenced in line with COVID-19 social

For this month’s heritage topic on weddings, we contacted the Landsborough Museum for more old wedding photos and snippets of history from our earlier residents whose family names will be familiar to many readers.

Readers may recall that the town of Landsborough is named after William Landsborough, who is cited as the first explorer to traverse Australia north to south. With his noted bush skills, William was chosen by the government of the day to lead a search in 1861 from the Gulf of Carpentaria southwards for ill-fated explorers Burke and Wills. Upon discovering the fate of the Victorian explorers in south western Queensland, Landsborough and his party decided to continue on to Melbourne where they were honoured for their epic journey.

In 1862 William married Caroline Hollingworth Raine and the couple had three daughters. Sadly, on their return to Queensland, Caroline died of tuberculosis in 1869 aged just 28.

Thomas Laxton Jnr and his wife Mary Jane (nee Leach) married in 1884 In 1882 in recognition of his services to exploration, the Queensland Government awarded William a substantial sum, which allowed him to retire to Caloundra on the Pumicestone Passage. He purchased more than 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land around the area of present day Golden Beach and built a home he called Loch Lamerough with his second wife Maria Therese Carter. In 1890, the railway station at Mellum Creek was renamed Landsborough in his honour.

The Laxton family were early settlers in the Mooloolah Glenview area. Local sources suggest Thomas Laxton Jnr (born 1857) and his wife Mary Jane (nee Leach, born 1868) were married around 1884. Thomas Jnr was the son of Thomas Laxton who in 1863, along with William and Richard Westaway, Thomas Maddock and Edmund Lander, drove 500 head of cattle from

Eagle Farm to Bli Bli through what was then fairly unchartered territory.

Thomas Jnr went on to purchase 100 acres (40 hectares) of land on the banks of the Mooloolah River from the Westaway family, and ran cattle and a bullock team.

The local records show Issac James Burgess married Anne Christina Wass in October 1910. His grandfather, Issac Hudson Burgess, was the first white settler to select land at Mellum Creek (now Landsborough) in 1871. Issac Hudson and his first wife Hannah owned the Temperance Hotel, which was situated near the intersection of Old Gympie Road and Landsborough-Maleny Road. It offered accommodation to travellers, most likely Cobb & Co passengers.

Q1 Over many years I have watched politicians start out with the best intentions and after being elected they seem to lose their voice and what was once important to them gets swallowed up within party lines and sentiment.

I have observed the factions within the major parties and find it very difficult to understand the difference between the far left of one party and the far right of another party.

Another thing I have observed is that many of our politicians are career politicians. We have ministers who have never worked in their portfolios; we have politicians who have come up through union ranks; we have politicians with very little life experience outside of their political career.

So I looked at my diverse background, my achievements within my chosen careers and I decided that I had something to contribute that would add value to the people.

Then I looked at the current political parties to see where my skills, knowledge and background would be a good fit.

The major parties were eliminated immediately, which drew me to One Nation.

The fundamentals of One Nation are that we are everyday Australians who listen to the people, who actually care about the future of our country and its people.

One Nation offers the voters the opportunity to be heard and not have your elected representative become a voiceless puppet of a major party.

So why did I choose to stand as a candidate?

Simply because I want you, the people of the electorate to be heard.

Q2 One Nation will implement low cost, reliable, dispatchable power by building new low-emission coal-fired power stations.

We will restore Australia’s essential 90-day fuel security policy and commit to reducing cost of living expenses while ensuring manufacturers have a globally competitive power source.

Q1 It saddens me that the public has such a distrust of politics and their elected representatives but it doesn’t surprise me.

It doesn’t help that scandals and negativity fly to the top of the news cycle quicker than local good news stories and positivity.

I still believe most, if not all, who enter politics do so because they want to spark change and do good in their part of the world.

That’s certainly been my motivation.

And my wife Taryn will be the first to pull me into line if I stray from that focus.

Over the years I’ve served as your MP, I have endeavoured to be true to my word and my efforts to help you, whether it be helping to secure traffic lights in Glass House and Beerwah, upgrades to MalenyKenilworth Road or flashing school zone lights in schools.

I’ve also worked with my federal and council colleagues to get outcomes, not pass the buck.

A recent example saw me team up with councillor Winston Johnston and the Department of Education to waive fees and undertake maintenance on the Maleny Pool so it could open for the season. I have the experience to do that.

I want to remain as your Member for Glass House and continue to prove that you can have faith in politics.

Q2 I’m proud to be part of a team with a holistic plan to lower the cost of living.

The LNP will decrease electricity prices by boosting competition through restructuring government-owned power generators from two to three entities.

We will also mandate investment in affordable green energy by government-owned electricity companies.

Q1 I joined the ALP in 2013 and put my hand up for Glass House in 2014 because Campbell Newman’s LNP government was the most heartless political mob I’d ever experienced.

I grew up respecting politicians. My grandfather was both a farmer and Country Party politician, and my father was a union organiser. Both fought hard for working-class people. So politics is in my blood.

When Newman and his ministry put the long knives through the public service, sacking 14,000 workers, slashing services and tilling the ground for the sell-off of our state assets, I had to step in.

I’m running again this year because I know that I can get things done for the people of Glass House.

Premier Palaszczuk has been a strong, effective leader who has always put the best interests of all Queenslanders at the forefront of her decisionmaking.

As we emerge from the COVID-19 crisis, Queensland cannot risk handing the reigns to Campbell Newman’s former assistant treasurer Deb Frecklington – a person who has shown consistently poor judgement during this pandemic.

Q2 One of the best ways a state government can help people with the cost of living is to bring down power prices. Official forecasts published at the end of 2019 by the Australian Energy Market Commission showed that power prices are set to fall by a far greater percentage in Queensland than any other Australian state or territory.

Because Queensland’s Labor government kept state power assets in public hands, our average family power bill is set to fall by approximately $278 from the 2018/19 financial year to the 2021/22 financial year.

That’s the sort of sensible, sustainable cost saving you will only get from a Labor government.

Just before going to print, a new candidate for the electorate of Glass House came to our attention.

Zonta warns Government The number of older women at risk of homelessness is now at 282,601 (ABS 2018) and rising at an alarming rate, according to Bridget Mather, governor of Zonta International District 22, which covers the whole of Queensland and comprises 45 clubs across the state.

“More than a quarter of a million older women could become the unseen victims of the post-pandemic recession in Queensland,” Ms Mather said.

The Zonta Club of the Blackall Range has joined Zonta clubs throughout Queensland urging state election candidates to place the scourge of escalating homelessness among older women front and centre in their housing platform for the upcoming election.

Ms Mather called for measures specifically tailored to helping the hidden homeless - an information call centre, increased expenditure on social housing, and local and state government support for new innovative housing models.

Zonta Club of Blackall Range president Ann Koenig said the club was very aware of the crises facing women not only with homelessness but also from domestic and family violence.

Many women are paying over 70% of their income in rent. They are not homeless but one crisis such as a rent hike, a health episode, eviction or redundancy and they add to the statistics,” Ms Mather said.

Q1 Everyone’s life changes when they become parents.

In 2012 my son was born and I began looking at life with fresh eyes.

Liam was born just before the Newman LNP government came in. By the time they were voted out I was pretty angry. It was such an opportunity squandered.

The Sunshine Coast had a swag of LNP MPs, including many ministers, and we all thought “at last, it’s our turn”.

But there was nothing for the coast, nothing for Caloundra, Beerwah or Landsborough. All we got were cuts, sackings and sell-offs.

And what we need isn’t rocket science. It is decent jobs to support our families, a roof over our heads, access to a good education, quality health care and the ability to put something away for retirement.

I thought we deserved better. So I started to work for “better”.

Since then, I have watched our MPs doing the bare minimum, maintaining their seats not maintaining the community.

If I am elected, that will change.

We need to get things done, so we need an MP who is willing to roll up his sleeves and get down to work.

So here I am.

Q2 The Labor government will continue to help Queensland households deal with day-to-day cost of living pressures.

As part of the COVID-19 economic plan, the government provided households with a $200 rebate to help with electricity bills. This is now being followed up with a further $50 rebate for all. The rebates are only available because Queenslanders still own their electricity assets.

Other concessions include: • $340 electricity rebate for seniors.

• Vehicle registration concessions for seniors.

• Public transport discounts for students and seniors.

Q1 Over the years I, like many others, am losing hope in seeing our country, in particular Queensland, flourish and prosper as it should have been. Q1 I have been working with government departments for many years. I have owned my own businesses and recently served as executive officer of STEPS Group Australia.

In both situations I have had good and bad experiences with politicians and bureaucrats.

Q1 Our democracy has been bought. I’m sick of politicians taking millions in donations and cashfor-access meetings. Adani has donated to both 20 major parties – no wonder neither party will refuse Adani’s licenses. Our future is at stake. There is no planet B. The major parties throw massive concessions and grants to corporations and billionaires with little trickling down to the average family. Meanwhile, public services are underfunded. For example education is underfunded by a staggering $5 billion by successive ALP and LNP governments, leaving families out of pocket having to fill the gap.

The Greens will introduce: 20 - Truly free education by allocating to Caloundra public schools $45 million extra over four years ($8.1 billion to public schools state-wide), including a technology fund to help families buy the required tech devices.

- Free health care. Health care should never be a financial decision. We will introduce bulk-billing health hubs with doctors and specialists and reduce the current waitlists by employing more doctors and nurses.

Plenty of locals and millions of other Australians will continue to receive medical care and support in their own homes with the federal government investing more than $2 billion to extend a range of COVID-19 health measures for a further six months, to March 31.

Medicare-subsidised telehealth and pathology services, GP-led respiratory clinics, home medicines delivery, and public and private hospital services will all be extended, as well as further investments in PPE (personal protective equipment).

Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said people all over the hinterland were aware that the health crisis was not over yet and that we could not afford to be complacent.

“This extra funding is going to make sure that the Sunshine Coast can keep its specialist respiratory clinics up and running as we continue to battle this virus,” Mr Wallace said.

“It will also mean that all Sunshine Coast residents who are worried, whether they live in Caloundra or Cambroon, can get the routine doctor’s appointments or even mental health treatments they need over the phone

without having to leave the house.

“It’s going to help us prevent community transmission on the Sunshine Coast and ensure that our most vulnerable residents are fully supported with their physical and mental health.

“If you would like to speak to your GP but you are concerned about the risk of community transmission, I urge you to give your doctor’s surgery a ring and ask for a telehealth consultation today,” he said.

Contributed by Helen Weil Now it is spring, the Mooloolah Mob walking group has gone back to starting at 6.30am for their Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings meeting at Martin Rungert Park, Mooloolah.

With the weather warming up, the group members are hoping to encourage other locals to come and join them.

They meet in the centre of town and then walk for about an hour on a variety of routes around the local area.

This is a National Heart Foundation group activity with certificates and awards for number of walks and attaining certain goals.

The goal of the group is about staying active and healthy in a friendly social environment.

You don’t have to walk every day or for the whole hour – just do as much as you feel you can.

We have our speedy walkers who cover a greater distance and we have our more relaxed walkers who maintain an average steady pace, but we all walk and that is what is important.

Please consider coming along to enjoy the social aspect of belonging to a friendly group as well as the health benefits of regular walking.

Hinterland Families Angus receives gold award for songwriting There are some incredibly talented musicians in our region and Peachester State School student Angus Joyce is definitely one of them. At just ten years of age, Angus recently won a gold award for junior song at the 2020 QLD School Poetry and Song Writing Competition for his entry ‘Pete the Pebble’, which he wrote and produced on his own during lockdown.

“During lockdown I was messing around with my old keyboard and I came up with the riff, so then I wrote the words - One day when I was walking down the street I saw a pebble drop at my feet. So, then I picked the pebble up. He said, ‘Hi, my name is…’ - and I thought what rhymes with feet and the name Pete came to mind,” Angus said.

Peachester residents may remember earlier this year coming across Pete the Pebble and Rebel the Pebble rocks scattered around Peachester parks and tracks. When Angus heard about putting rocks throughout the neighbourhood, he was inspired to create some of his own, painting 100

With the help of mum Sally (who mailed some of the rocks to friends afar), Pete the Pebble rocks dodged border restrictions and made it to the other side of the world. As part of a COVID learning at home project, Angus turned his character drawing into T-shirts, all the while producing a video to go alongside his song.

It wasn’t until Angus went back to school that he heard about the songwriting competition, which was hosted by Edge Creatives, with the theme ‘The senses – see, smell, taste, touch, hear’. It was a perfect theme for Angus’s original entry.

Angus’s love of music has been encouraged by his music tutor Emma Creed, who Sally says resets his music motivation each week, giving him the skills to create and love music. Angus just enjoys being able to play and it gives him “something to do other than watching a screen”. “[Music is] a great mix between being inside and outside,” he said.

While Angus wrote and produced ‘Pete the Pebble’ on his own, he also plays in a band called Firebolt with friend Micah.

“Prior to ‘Pete the Pebble’, Micah and I wrote one song called ‘Number one’, and we’ve now written seven songs together,” Angus said proudly.

The Firebolt pair have been performing together for a while. Angus says that at the start of a performance he always feels nervous but once they get going and he sees people smiling back at them and enjoying their music, it’s all just fun.

To celebrate Angus’s award-winning ‘Pete the Pebble’ entry, a gold Pete the Pebble will be hidden around Peachester with the first to find it winning a free Firebolt gig and Pete the Pebble T-shirt. Updates of the competition will be on the Peachester Community Facebook page.

Library holiday activities COVID style This school holidays Sunshine Coast Libraries have made it super easy and fun to holiday at home with an alternate approach to their children’s programs by providing a range of free activity kits.

The free activities were designed for specific age groups and included projects such as learning the basics of coding using the cute Robot Mouse, building and decorating your own kite, and becoming a pirate.

Some kits also contained materials to create a steampunk journal, pixel art Tahlia

and enviroBLOX artwork.

Beerwah mum Marie Robinson was happy to kick of the school holidays with daughter Stephanie by visiting the Beerwah Library to grab some books for holiday reading as well as picking up their recyclable block kit to produce some unique artwork.

It won’t be long until the Christmas holidays and GC&M News will keep you updated on what the libraries will be offering, as well as some great holiday reading suggestions, in its Hinterland Kids section.

Battle of Bands showcase - Beerwah State High School

By Sonia Isaacs Clark To complete our showcase series on the 2020 Battle of the Bands, this edition features the three bands from Beerwah State High School who, along with bands from Glasshouse Christian College and Maleny State High School, proved there is some seriously exciting emerging musical talent in our region.

Offbeat Year 10 students Brock Sommerfield (bass guitar), Tyler Smyth (vocals) and Rhori Callinan (lead guitar and backup vocals) and year 9 student Riley Ferguson (drums) make up Offbeat. With a shared love of punk rock uniting them, the band came together earlier this year.

Rhori said the name was taken from a search they were doing for musical categories that referred to three types of successful artists – superstars, supergroups and offbeat, which made reference to punk and other alternative styles. The band practises mostly during lunch times.

As well as punk and rock influences such as the Ramones, Black Sabbath, The Sweet, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Suzi Quatro and Green Day, the band members also enjoy blues and glam rock but like to “punk up the sound” wherever possible. With a nod to more classic influences, band members Riley and Rhori think their musical preferences come from “old school stuff” they hear on the radio and hearing some of these artists through their parents.

Riley, Brock and Rhori are members of the school’s stage band and the band members share a passion for music and the different emotions it can evoke in people. They plan to continue putting on lunchtime concerts at school and hope to play at gigs in the future.

Chimera Year 12 students Noah Pemberton (bass guitar), Tom Bremner (drums), Ty Hand (lead guitar) and Aida Keller and Holley Blee (vocals) belong to Chimera. Noah said the band’s name came to them after “checking out a bunch of random stuff” online and stumbling across the ancient description of the mysterious chimera.

“We liked that the chimera was made up of different animals and we thought it’d make a great name as we all bring a bunch of different things together to create something better,” Noah said.

The band came together earlier this year and started with practising once a week before stepping it up during term two to jam a couple of times a week.

Mainly playing covers, the band members cite a range of pop and light-hearted rock influences including The Police, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Panic at the Disco and Green Day. They like songs with a good bass rift and a groovy sound. With plans to perform at their year 12 graduation clap out ceremony, Noah said it was great to come together with a group of friends and have a supportive space to be creative.

Young Arising Xander Bryant and Ethan Ross (vocals), Tyson Baker (drums) and Bert Adams (lead guitar) are year 10 students who formed the band Young Arising in March this year. Xander said they came up with the band name after “sitting around spit balling”, deciding they liked the sound of Young Arising and how it could mean that they could go on to “arise to something bigger”.

Their major musical influences include One Direction, Five Seconds of Summer, Lewis Capaldi and AC/DC. However, the band members enjoy listening to a variety of music. Although mainly focussing on playing covers, the band has recently started to explore writing and already has a couple of originals under its belt. Most of their practise time has been during lunchtimes at school. Xander said that as all the band members were already good friends, their priority was just to have fun.

The band plans to stay together and are hoping to work towards getting into a studio to record some original material.

Contributed by Karli Pearson The first Scout camp since term one was the perfect chance for the Landsborough Scouts to get back to basics.

They pitched canvas Queenslander tents by tying a huge number of rolling hitches, fisherman’s knots, reef knots and square lashings, to name a few.

Safety was the priority as they learnt how and when to use tomahawks and saws as well as how to cook meals on a camp fire.

The Landsborough Scouts and Venturers meet at the Rocky Creek Camp ground on Old Gympie Road, Landsborough on Thursdays from 6-8pm while the Joeys and Cubs meet on Tuesdays at 6pm, with the Joeys finishing at 7pm and the Cubs at 7:30pm.

Contributed by Kim Fillery This year’s Peachester State School cross country was held on Tuesday, September 15. It was a stunning day, which saw all our students cheering each other on for victory, supporting each lap of the course that was run.

The total points tally saw Coochin House on 837 points take the trophy back from the 2019 winners Stanley House on 709 points.

Swim season kicks off The Beerwah Swimming Team kicked off the competitive long-course swimming season with a splash, recording a swag of personal best times at the Cotton Tree swimming meet.

The junior swimmers made the most of the first meet of the season under the

guidance of coach Charlie as they set the bar high in the morning session. Not to be out done, the senior swimmers hit the pool in the afternoon and tested what they’ve been doing at training.

Does your child enjoy messy, creative play? Do you love being outdoors and want to meet other parents and carers in the area? Then head to the free Landsborough Playgroup every Thursday morning (weather permitting) from 9.30-11.30am at Pioneer Park.

After spending a few months in hibernation, family support worker Suky Oliver said she was happy to let local families with children aged 0-5 years know that the playgroup was up and running again.

Suky said the playgroup was a friendly bunch and new families were most welcome to drop by and have some fun – just look out for the colourful play mat.

“Kids can enjoy creative or messy play activities like painting and leaf threading, or they can run around and play on the equipment. It’s a great chance to meet other local parents and carers, and an opportunity to access parenting information in an informal and fun environment,” Suky said.

Organised through the Caloundra Community Centre since 2017, the group previously met at the Landsborough CWA Hall but since returning post COVID-19 has now relocated to the big Pioneer Park playground.

Cool.Calm.Chill.

Challenges and frustrations are part of our day-to-day lives and for girls this is no different. Cool.Calm.Chill is a program for girls aged 9-11 years who want to learn how to calm their inner frustrations.

The program has been developed by Kim French who, along with Cherrie Jones, will be facilitating the program set to start next month.

Kim, a youth worker for Anglicare, has facilitated many children’s program over the past six years and has recently completed a Bachelor of Counselling at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

She says she recognises the importance of assisting young people in “understanding their own thoughts, feelings and behaviours and this awareness encourages and empowers them in taking responsibility for themselves”.

“This gives them confidence in knowing they have control over their own emotions,” Kim said.

The program runs for six weeks and focusses on a range of outcomes including identifying feelings within their body when anger is present, gaining awareness of triggers when they feel angry and frustrated, strategies to deal with anger in a healthier way and how to communicate, including who to look for when needing help.

The program runs for six weeks on Wednesday afternoons from 3.304.15pm at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre starting on October 14. The cost is just $50 for the six lessons.

You Said It Upcoming state election

Queensland Parliament recently passed a law banning so called gay conversion therapy. In my opinion it didn’t go nearly far enough but it’s a start.

Our current representative for Glass House, LNP member Andrew Powell, voted against this bill. I’m saddened and shocked that this is the case. Conversion practices targeting people with diverse sexual orientations and genders are very disturbing and cause significant harm to those subjected to it, highlighted in the movie ‘Boy Erased’.

I would like to think that when an elected representative of a region is voting on legislation that person will take into consideration the wellbeing of all people in their electorate and not just consider their own personal bias and/or those of their chosen party.

I’m sure there is a very large percentage of this electorate who would not agree with conversion practices. I hope the people of Glass House will choose a representative that has a much broader and more considered and inclusive view of the world in the upcoming state election.

Safety versus freedom Lately, with a lot of time to reflect, I browsed through our national anthem Advance Australia Fair: Australians all let us rejoice, for we are young and free.

Our nation has gone through a lot of uncertainty, fear, loss of control, isolation among others and this has posed the question for me: “What is more important safety or freedom?”

It is disappointing to see how each state claims to have the answer.

I have always liked the song by Peter Allan ‘I still call Australia home’. However, at this stage we see Australians not able to come home.

The daughter of friends of ours has had her flights cancelled twice from the UK to Australia.

Family members from different states are unable to come to funerals, visit hospitals etc.

The rules are changing and are different in each state and we have no certainty as a nation.

There have been lots of kind acts as well but they do not receive much attention.

For me the answer is freedom, when we are free we can also be safe. Can we please have the freedom to decide how to live our lives and respect different opinions and realise that united we stand and divided we fall.

I know from recently caring for my mother as she progressed through our failed aged care system that essential services cannot be privatised. You cannot balance my mother’s dignity with shareholder profits.

We’ve seen successive governments undertake a pattern of privatisation of various essential services to our detriment.

While aged care is largely a federal issue there’s things that can be done on a state level.

The state could build new, quality aged care homes. In doing so we need to think about quality in aged care and not make our state-based homes an extension of hospitals.

The states or council could offer home care packages, as some councils in NSW do, to maximise the care that people can get while staying in their home. This would provide people with a real choice and ensure public monies are not diverted to shareholders.

The states could increase nurse ratios in state-based aged care homes to improve quality of care and put more money into our healthcare system to remove wait lists that disproportionately impact the elderly.

The states could provide advocacy support and support for carers of the elderly.

At a more societal level, the states could proactively promote respect and care within our society for our elderly in so many ways. As a simple example they would provide more options for schools to coordinate with aged care homes to have children visit on a more frequent and structured basis.

Interactions between the generations is of so much benefit to our elderly and also promotes respect and compassion in our children, hopefully leading to a better society.

I am sick of state governments passing the buck and saying it’s a federal issue.

Aged care is an issue for all levels of government, for society generally and for all of us!

Re: Lindeman Road cycle path Thank you to Mick Procter for his observations in his letter in GC&M News (September 16). While I understand that a small section of cycle way and street lighting on a long road might appear unnecessary, I would point out that this was paid for by the developer.

The development was of the scale that council was able to make such works a condition of approval. The only other option would have been to not condition those works and the community would have lost out on that

money.

I take the long view on this. When, in the future, council does upgrade Lindeman Road that section will already be done and won’t have to be paid for out of your rates. I believe the general community would see that as a responsible approach.

Invasive weeds Congratulations to Brownie and also to letter writer Jeanette Nobes for excellent information in the last issue of GC&M News highlighting the spread of invasive weeds all over the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast.

As Brownie informed us, this is an excellent time to identify a number of weed species due to their distinctive new foliage and flowers. In addition, Jeanette has been a tireless worker and advocate for the control and eradication of weeds. Regrettably the council and Department of Main Roads have not listened to her expert advice and consequently we find ourselves in this current invasive weed mess.

Bank closures The two letters on the ANZ closure (GC&M News, September 16) bring to mind the Suncorp closure two years back. This is a repeat of the same inconsiderate closure of the Suncorp bank branch offices in both Beerwah and Maleny that means customers have to go to Caloundra or Morayfield to access Suncorp. It’s the same insensitive cost-cutting measures that ANZ is now taking and they clearly don’t give a toss about their customers.

I was a loyal customer of Suncorp for more than 30 years when I had joined in another Sunshine Coast location.

Tossed out we were, all of Maleny’s customers, and ANZ has now done the same to its customers with Beerwah’s closure the final straw.

People’s banks - not at all. They just consider the shareholders and top staff salaries and that’s it. No wonder we all lose faith in today’s banking system.

ANZ Beerwah closure As both an ANZ shareholder and customer for over 40 years, I would

like to raise a number of issues with the comments in the GC&M News story in the September 2 edition.

Nathalie Hesse, ANZ general manager for Southern Queensland, states among other matters “the convenience of internet banking and call centres”.

My experience with the ANZ phone banking self-service 13 13 14 call centre has been abysmal and it has been unavailable for many months with the message “due to current circumstances we are unable to take your call”.

We rely on phone banking for checking our bank balances. ANZ would be wise to delete the word ‘service’ ... because there isn’t any!

This gives us no choice but to visit ANZ Beerwah to receive a regular update on our ANZ account balances.

Lisa Carter, the branch manager at ANZ Beerwah, has assisted us, and Lisa and her staff provide efficient, professional and friendly service.

With global unrest and concerns raised by our Prime Minister about foreign interference, security, etc we are reluctant to put our financial affairs onto ANZ internet banking or any internet banking sites.

We live in Maleny, a 40-minute return trip to Beerwah, where we shop and bank regularly.

Beerwah is projected as a regional business centre with a population of 6,769, which is significantly higher than Woodford’s population of 2,517. I question the decision and reasoning to close Beerwah and maintain Woodford ANZ. We understand that there are ANZ branches we could use in Caloundra, which is an 80-minute return trip, and Woodford, which is a 64-minute return trip. We will not be travelling an 80-minute or 64-minute return trip to ANZ banks in these two areas.

There are always customers in the ANZ Bank at Beerwah whenever we visit. I strongly disagree with Nathalie Hesse’s comment about “more customers doing their banking when it suits them, ANZ apps, internet banking and call centres” because I know many folk who rely on their local bank for faceto-face communication, reliability and security.

We believe strongly in local jobs and face-to-face communication with our bank.

We will be impacted with the loss of ANZ Beerwah and their professional, efficient and friendly service.

If this eventuates, and the branch closes, then we will close our ANZ accounts and make other arrangements.

By Greg Brown In a letter to the editor (September 16 edition) Christian Hendersen of Beerrburrum questioned the use of a photograph accompanying an article in GC&M News (August 19 edition) titled ‘Ferals take heed … council on your case’.

Mr Hendersen wrote “I was disgusted to see a picture of what looked like a purebred dingo used as a reference to the council’s wild dog baiting program”, His comment highlights the serious predicament facing the genetic survival of the dingo subspecies (Canis lupus dingo) as a distinct form separate from the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris).

The photograph in the story is a file image originally sourced from the state government department responsible for pest plant and animal management, now referred to as Biosecurity Queensland within the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

GC&M News can assure Mr Hendersen that the image represents a wild dog in a near-urban environment similar to the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

A Biosecurity Queensland factsheet on wild dogs defines wild dogs as “any dogs that are not domesticated. This includes dingoes, feral dogs and hybrids”.

According to the factsheet, distinguishing a hybrid wild dog from a dingo wild dog

is not easy, and this would be especially so just from a photograph such as the one in the article.

The factsheet explains that dingoes “… are not easily distinguished from other wild dogs and can be reliably identified only by detailed skull measurements and their genetic makeup”.

Biosecurity Queensland oversees the legislation that defines pest animals and the obligations of landholders to control and manage them. This obligation extends to wild dogs and establishes that local government is the lead agency in ensuring that “biosecurity obligations” are followed.

Mr Hendersen also raised an issue of dingoes being a native animal and deserving protection as such.

This classification is somewhat conflicted, even between government departments.

Biosecurity Queensland considers the dingo to be an introduced animal.

“Dingoes are natives of Asia selectively bred by humans from wolves. They were present in Australia from 3500–4000 years ago,” it states in the factsheet.

The Queensland Government department responsible for the management of wildlife – the Department of Environment and Science – has another perspective on its webpage relating to dingoes.

Although it agrees that archaeological evidence dates dingoes as being introduced into Australia around 3,500 years ago, it states that “… the Queensland Museum notes that recent DNA studies suggest dingoes may have been in Australia even longer (between 4,640 and 18,100 years)”.

The Department of Environment and Science website lists dingoes as “native wildlife” under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 and as such they are protected in national parks.

The department highlights that a significant threat to the survival of the dingo is interbreeding with domestic dogs and that the control of these hybrid

animals is essential to protecting dingoes.

The department also notes that it – like all other landholders – has an obligation to control pest animals on its lands and it also participate in programs to control wild dogs in its parks and reserves.

These pest animal control activities – including 1080 baiting for wild dogs – are undertaken by staff from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

“Unfortunately, interbreeding threatens the ability of the dingo to survive as a separate subspecies,” the departmental website states.

“For the dingo to survive as a separate subspecies, it is important to control the number of feral dogs.”

Political purposes

The case of Sarah from Canberra, barred from attending her father’s funeral in Brisbane, caught public attention. The Prime Minister raised the case on radio. Federal ministers and the Queensland LNP weighed in to attack Premier Palaszczuk.

Queensland regards Canberra as a hotspot because its borders are porous and there are no border controls. Some people have used Canberra as a back door to get into Queensland (though not in this case).

Sarah had not had time to quarantine before her father died. Thousands of people have been similarly affected.

They have not been able to attend family events in, for example, NSW. Funerals are high-risk events because many elderly people attend them and, if exposed, could carry COVID-19 into aged care facilities. As a compromise, Sarah was allowed a private viewing.

To use a family’s private grief and make it the centre of a media storm for political purposes is contemptible. As I sit in the quiet solitude of my study and scan the funeral notices, I wonder which family will be next.

Following the letter from Cheryl Parker (GC&M News, September 2) Sunshine Coast Council has advised that arrangements have been made through its property management branch to have sanitary bins installed in the Happy Valley amenities.

An additional daily (afternoon/evening) cleaning service is being provided, funded by the ferris wheel vendor.

‘Boy Swallows Universe’ – Trent Dalton This gritty Australian coming-of-age novel is a must read for anyone nostalgic for a revisit to life in Brisbane during the 1980s. Dalton brings to life the harsh realities of growing up poor under the influence of drug crime, but he infuses humour, romance and the power of friendship in such a vivid and refreshing way that life during such trying circumstances seems almost beautiful. 5/5 stars. A classic song – ‘Ruby Tuesday’ by the Rolling Stones - goes with this book. Reviewed by Jenny.

This week I had the honour of turning the first sod on the long-awaited Mooloolah Community Men’s Shed.

When I first heard from Bernie and Anita Verwayen that more than 300 local residents had been in touch with them to ask for a men’s shed to be built in Mooloolah Valley it was clear that the community was crying out for this.

I was determined to help make it a reality, so during the 2019 federal election I promised to deliver $250,000 for the build. I’m delighted to say there are now shovels in the ground and the shed is taking shape.

Photo taken in 2019 Like many of us during this COVID crisis, older men in the Sunshine Coast hinterland have faced severe social isolation. For men in regional communities the opportunities to find a place where they belong and make a contribution to their community, and talk to people like them in a familiar environment, can be even fewer and farther between.

The Mooloolah Community Men’s Shed will include work stations for a variety of wood and metal working equipment as well as social spaces. It will provide local men with mateship and a home away from home to help support their mental and physical health.

It will also provide much needed work for local tradies too.

With John Holland, Bernie, Anita and the Community Centre Committee, Mooloolah Valley had the most passionate advocates you could ask for and I was proud to be able to help.

The Pumicestone Passage is our legacy and local people can help protect it.

The coast certainly rolled out great weather this school holidays to the delight of domestic travellers flocking to our sparkling beaches.

In particular, the Pumicestone Passage has not only been frequented by people visiting from around Queensland, but many locals are now enjoying this picturesque waterway for the first time.

While environmental tourism is vital to the Sunshine Coast, more visitors means we need to ensure the processes are in place to protect places like the Passage.

This waterway is special and unique – it is part of our environmental legacy and there is a way we can all love it without loving it to death.

Caloundra and the hinterland are full of intelligent people who understand the Passage and have a lot to say about its management into the future.

Many of those people have come together to form the current Pumicestone Passage Waterways Committee.

What this small group is fighting for, and what we as a region need to fight for, is a local body of local people looking at local issues that affect and impact the Passage.

If we can harness all the local knowledge available, we can create a body that will better protect the Passage and make it better for all users for generations to come.

Maleny pool update Great news for the Maleny Pool! Thank you to everyone who has written to me over the past week concerned the pool may not be open during spring and summer. Your community spirit in Maleny never ceases to amaze me! I have worked with the school principal and the Department of Education to waive fees, undertake maintenance and prepare the pool for re-opening. Councillor Winston Johnston, of Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council, and I have worked to make the regular operating payments to the swimming club upfront rather than in arrears.

As a result, the swimming club will shortly be advertising for a pool manager and it won’t be long before the pool is open again. Please know that the pool is actually run by volunteers – not the school or council. I know those volunteers would love a few extra pairs of hands, so if you’re keen to see the pool open please consider adding your support to the running of the swimming club.

EndED Mooloolah Valley You might not be aware but Mooloolah Valley is home to Australia’s very first live-in eating disorder residential treatment facility. EndED Butterfly House provides tools and support for young people whose lives have been affected by eating disorders. EndED has already received considerable financial support from the federal Morrison government and I’m so pleased to announce that an LNP state government will support the vital work of EndED. We will contribute $800,000 to purchase a second property to act as a ‘step-out’ facility, helping young people move out of treatment and back into the community.

Cribb Street Landsborough update The $3.3 million Cribb Street upgrade is continuing.

Major works, including road works, underground services and parking reconfiguration, will be complete by late October (subject to weather and site conditions). With most of the heavy construction activity on the railway side now complete, construction will flip to the shop side.

That means the northbound lane and on-street parking on the shop side will be temporarily closed. Lookout improvements Council staff have laid new asphalt at Skipper Musk Lookout at Bald Knob to provide improved parking for vehicles and buses.

Planting of ground cover on the embankment slope will start soon, further enhancing this picturesque spot.

Dog inspection program Owning a dog is a great privilege and also a big responsibility. To keep our community safe, there are additional requirements for those who own a regulated dog (declared dangerous dogs, declared menacing dogs and restricted dogs).

From November 1, Sunshine Coast Council officers will begin an annual inspection program of premises where regulated dogs reside to ensure owners are complying with the necessary conditions. Visit council’s website to learn more.

Maleny Showground reminder While on the topic of dogs, unfortunately some dog owners are abusing the privilege of using the Maleny Showground as an off-leash dog area.

During recent weeks some irresponsible owners have allowed their dogs to enter the playing fields during games and training. This is extremely dangerous for both dogs and players.

In addition, some owners are failing to clean up after their dogs, which is a health and biosecurity risk to other users.

There have been disturbing instances of uncontrolled dogs being aggressive and dog excretion being plastered on the padlocks of the buildings at and around the soccer club house.

This is extremely disappointing. Please remember these are shared grounds and dog owners must ensure their dogs don’t disturb anyone else using the facility.

Jesus says to us, forgive!

Jesus died for me, forgives even me, not with anger but with love.

Jesus has died also for those who have hurt me, even deeply. All of our pain and injuries, Jesus took with him to his death and disposed of it once and for all in his tomb. Jesus says to me: “You are forgiven” and as we rejoice in our forgiveness, He gives us new power to forgive from the heart.

We have our hearts cleansed by the gospel, have the power now to forgive.

In Jesus Christ our hearts are free to love as He has loved us and to forgive as He has forgiven.

We pray now in confidence”: “Forgive our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.”

In the Garden As Cr Winston Johnson shares my passion about battling weeds, I have offered up my column space this week so he can share his message with gardeners across both Division 1 and Division 5.

Regrettably, many new and even long-term residents think that invasive weed trees like camphor laurel, narrow/broad leaf privets and Chinese celtis (elm) are lovely trees.

Nothing could be further from the truth. They are not called invasive weeds because they are good for our environment. They are called that because they rapidly destroy our environment, scenic views, valuable prime agricultural land and waterways, and some species pose a serious annual health risk to sufferers of hay fever and asthma.

Other smaller invasive weeds are also spreading exponentially in the hinterland. Those weeds include morning glory, giant rat’s tail, mist weed, giant devils fig, groundsel, Japanese sunflower, madeira vine, cat’s claw creeper, red lantana and numerous others.

While some of these invasive weeds may seem attractive or pretty flowering shrubs, those who understand the nature of these plants detest them because of the damage they do to our natural environment, as well as the annual cost of control to both farmers and the community in general. In addition, they all rapidly take over local native plant species and fauna habitat.

To fully understand why they are a problem consider the old factual adage regarding weeds: “One year’s seed is seven years weeds”.

This is because their seed can lay dormant in the ground for up to seven years before germination.

Many environmentally minded people talk about sustainability when discussing our natural environment but I ask what is sustainable about pouring chemicals on our land, year after year, in an endeavour to control the spread of invasive weeds?

The best way to control weed species and create a sustainable environment for future generations is to eliminate the host plants through persistence and hard work by pulling out the newly germinated plants before they flower and repeat the cycle of another seven years of germination and continual hard work.

Since I was elected to Sunshine Coast Council in April I have endeavoured to educate other councillors and biosecurity staff in an endeavour to lift the profile of invasive weeds and obtain increased focus and spending on weed control.

However, unless property owners, our state government and all dedicated environmental community members understand the magnitude of the problem and work with the council to control and eliminate all invasive weeds, then we are doomed to failure and the hinterland will rapidly become a weed infested wasteland, lacking in agricultural production, visual amenity and habitat for much of our native flora and fauna.

This is a call to arms for all residents to support my efforts to get action before it is too late by demanding

that our council and state government act now by allocating sufficient funding to control this urgent environmental and economic issue.

Jobs for the yard in October • Look at top dressing your lawn.

A thin layer of top dressing soil is best. Any hollow areas need the turf lifted, the soil added underneath and then replace the turf. Don’t just pile it on top as it will kill the grass and encourage weeds.

• Watch out for leaf miner in your citrus trees. Recent new growth is susceptible to this burrowing caterpillar.

Spray every 2-3 weeks with a pest or white oil to avoid leaf damage.

• Grape vines will be growing and bunches of grapes forming. Keep up the water to ensure plump juicy fruits. If birds are a problem, cover the whole vine with netting or cover bunches with individual pest exclusion bags.

• Prune your figs. Next season’s fruit are produced only on the new growth so pruning will mean more fruit.

• Plant seed or seedlings for Christmas dinner, especially colourful leafy lettuces like red mignonette, butter beans, golden button squash and cherry tomatoes.

• Your mangoes, citrus and lychees need good soil moisture during this month – water weekly.

planting tropical fruit trees such as babaco, longan and tamarillo.

• If you’re lucky enough to grow tropical peaches, you should be picking them this month.

• Dig lots of compost and manure into the spot where you will be planting your dahlias next month.

• Flowering annuals will continue to produce flowers if the spent flowers are removed on a daily basis, but sooner or later they will give up the ghost.

• As it’s warming up, providing a bird bath in a sheltered position in your garden is good for the local wildlife and for your garden (the birds will hopefully eat your pests).

• Prune back your passionfruit vines this month. Also plant new vines if needed. Apply a good fertiliser to give them a boost into summer.

• Dig, divide and replant canna lilies, and plant new season gladioli corms.

• Renew your herb garden with fresh basil, oregano, marjoram, rosemary and thyme. Try something different like curry leaf, galangal ginger or turmeric. Don’t think about coriander as it will just bolt to seed before you know it.

Positions Vacant CASUAL SHORT ORDER COOK / CHEF At Glasshouse Mountains Coffee – Moby Vic’s / Shell on the highway We are expanding our team due to the thriving growth in our business and we require a passionate, well organised short order cook / chef to work in a fast paced environment servicing our drive-thru customers as well as dine-in customers.

The role involves making of fresh ondemand breakfast wraps and muffins, toasting home-made banana breads and grab and go smashed avocado on sourdoughs and toasted sandwiches.

This is not complex food but needs to be made fresh and fast each morning.

We also would love the successful applicant to have the ability to make some homemade-style cakes, sweet muffins etc and also to be able to craft our homemade sausage rolls, pies and Cornish pasties.

It’s early morning starts at 4.30 am during weekdays, weekends it’s a later start at 6 am but shifts finish by 2 pm and involves NO night work at all.

The position is casual and up to 40 hours per week are currently available - we are happy to consider 2 applicants to job share the shifts.

Sport Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Miles Allen After a pandemic-enforced break, play has gradually resumed at Maleny Bowls Club. It has been more than two months since we’ve been holding competitions. On Wednesday, October 14 our twilight bowls recommence and we’ll be back to our usual complement of weekly games, all played under COVID Safe conditions.

We sent teams to Woodford, Kilcoy and Mapleton bowls clubs as soon as they reopened for their monthly competitions.

It’s been good to reconnect with their players and the spirit of companionship prevails. We have won at all these clubs in the past month and while it’s not always about winning, it usually is!

While some members lost a bit of form during the break others seemed to relish the time off and came back with renewed enthusiasm and determination. We took the opportunity to do some jobs around the club with the shrubs and plants heavily pruned, and the clubhouse and equipment heavily sterilised. Under the care of Dave Edwards our green has been looking and playing really well.

Training during the break consisted of searching the internet for matches and coaching tips, and many of us saw how the professionals play under pressure and how easy they make it look.

On Friday afternoons players are given a handicap according to their skill level.

There are occasions when new bowlers beat those with many years of experience but, of course, it’s not about winning.

Last Friday the winners were Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson, Mick Bulger, Dennis Kyling, Ray Ellemor and Ben Fawns. Kay and Roy Gesch tied their game. Chocolates for maximum scores were given to Dicko, Ben and Joe Walters.

We had a great turnout on our last night to support our BeeGees teams. Now all our teams (except a few mid-week games) will be all playing away.

Our BIG Beegees raffle was drawn and winners are being notified. We will then post them on our website. Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket to help support our club.

We would also like to thank all the wonderful businesses for donating some awesome prizes.
