t's official, now that it’s December, it is finally ok to become Christmas obsessed! Every flat surface and even a few crooked ones in our office are covered in baubles. The front verandah is decorated with giant Christmas decorations, and our front foyer has its very own handmade Santa’s mailbox courtesy of Kevin Taylor who unfortunately won’t be doing Christmas lights at his home this year and generously donated them for us to use.

Yep there is no escaping Christmas here, you will have noticed our beautiful Christmas themed yarn bombed tree on the cover!

Once again made by Beerwah’s most enthusiastic knitter – Lottie Nisbett who this year has come up with a visually spectacular knitted work of art!

Special thanks also go to Lottie’s husband John and to Brownie who spent a few hours doing the installation!

Local News Tiarna makes her mark Beerwah-based Hinterland Boxing Club (HBC) recently ventured to the Gold Coast for the Australian Elite Titles which doubled as Rio Olympic Qualifiers and Women’s Elite World Championship trials.

Stephen Pitt, founder of HBC, accompanied local boxer Tiarna Collins to compete in the women’s 57kg division.

“We went into camp on the Wednesday in preparation for Tiarna’s first bout on Thursday evening,” he said.

“Tiarna had five athletes in her division from the various states around the country.”

Tiarna – the reigning Queensland Champion – drew a tough first bout against a taller Victorian opponent, but came away with a hard fought win.

“She drew the bye on the Friday and boxed the top Victorian contender in the final in a rugged and tiring contest, going down by a very close decision, becoming the Australian Silver Medallist in the 57kg division,” explained Stephen.

According to Stephen, this was a fantastic result and he was sure that Tiarna would learn and grow into a better boxer because of the experience and opportunity.

A public forum giving the local community the last chance to air concerns about the Bruce Highway and Caloundra Road interchange upgrades has been set for Saturday, December 12. It will be from 9.00am – 11.00am at the CCSA Hall, 1 Nutley Street, Caloundra, Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle announced.

It comes as the Regional Director from the Department of Main Roads confirmed she will attend and present at the forum.

Main Roads will update the community on the project and accept the tabling of project issues from Mr McArdle to include in the stakeholder register, which the two shortlisted tenderers must take into consideration when compiling final designs for the project.

“This forum is crucial for local businesses, action groups and residents impacted by this upgrade to attend,” Mr McArdle said.

“I am calling on the local community to also put their concerns in writing to my office as soon as possible.

“Many businesses at the Aussie World precinct are concerned about the removal of direct access and a number of environmentalists are very worried about the impact to the Beerwah State Forest.

“This is our last chance to send a clear message

to the tenderers to ensure they get the final design right.”

Earlier this month Main Roads announced the two shortlisted tenderers for the project were Fulton Hogan/Seymour Whyte Joint Venture and The Infrastructure Group.

Mr McArdle extended the invitation to both tenderers to attend the forum, however Main Roads advised neither were permitted to discuss the project with stakeholders during this phase of the tender process and would therefore not be attending.

“I am disappointed the tenderers will not be able to hear first-hand from the local community the real issues and concerns regarding this upgrade, however I thank the Regional Director for ensuring Main Roads will be attending and accepting final concerns in the stakeholder register before it closes,” Mr McArdle said.

The public is welcome to attend however to reserve a seat please email caloundra@ parliament.qld.gov.au with the subject Bruce Highway and Caloundra Interchange Upgrades Forum.

The tenderers have until late March to present their offer, with an award of contract expected mid 2016. Construction is expected to commence late 2016.

Become a furry foster parent and help save lives Sunshine Coast Council is calling on the community to help one of the region’s most valuable animal refuges, Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Society (SCARS) to keep saving cats and dogs on the Sunshine Coast.

Community Program Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay joined SCARS at the public launch of their Dog Foster and Feline Foster Families (FFF) Program.

Cr McKay said SCARS were at a crossroads and realised they needed to change their process and strategy if they were going to be able to continue to help save high numbers of unwanted cats and dogs.

“For the first time ever, SCARS is seeking the community’s help with fostering their cats and dogs,” Cr McKay said.

“This program has always been run internally, utilising SCARS volunteers as carers, however, the demand and need is too great for this to continue as is.

“For SCARS to be in this position now, even before the summer period begins when there is generally an increase of surrendered, dumped and roaming cats and dogs, is a major concern.

“Giving pets as a surprise Christmas gift can sometimes backfire as people are not aware of what it takes to be a pet owner. Perhaps giving foster care a go will give people an insight into having a pet, whilst receiving the support of SCARS to help settle them in.

“And by becoming a foster carer, people will be directly helping save lives.”

SCARS, an independent, not-for-profit charity, was established in 1979 and has a noneuthanasia policy, focusing on finding forever homes for our four-legged friends and promoting responsible pet ownership.

SCARS Manager, Penny Brischke said SCARS cared for up to 70 dogs and 70 cats at any one time, and saved 1000 cats and dogs every year.

“People don’t realise how many calls we get every day to surrender their animals, pregnant and with litters of kittens or puppies, young and old ones, some with very sad situations. We only have so much room as we are a non euthanising refuge,” Ms Brischke said.

“There are dogs at SCARS that really need the comfort and ‘normalness’ of a home to have the best chance of getting a permanent home.

“Dogs need fostering for a number of reasons; post operation recovery, to provide a consistent approach to training required, because they are old and have medical conditions which will resolve much quicker in a home, and some dogs just don’t handle the refuge environment and need quiet, calm homes to wait for their forever home.

“People can temporarily foster a mother cat and her kittens. Once the kittens are old enough they can be returned to SCARS to be rehomed. On average a mother or kitten foster will be between four – 10 weeks.

“Everything required to be a Feline Foster Family is supplied by SCARS. We have over 50 cats and kittens in foster care at the moment and the calls just keep coming to take more. It is shaping up to be one of the worst kitten seasons.

“It has been a particularly quiet time for adoptions of adult cats and without these adoptions it is challenging to keep bringing in other adult cats.”

Ms Brischke said SCARS relies heavily on government grants and the community to keep operating.

“The charity spends over $250,000 on vet care each year and spend around $500.00 to re-home each animal – and that’s just the healthy ones,” she said.

“We rely on community donations to care for these cats and dogs who may have been abandoned, surrendered or found wandering the streets.

“All animals receive an initial vet check and care, including heartworm, worming and flea prevention, vaccinations, food, shelter and care, de-sexing and micro-chipping. Adoption prices include all of this and registration with the local council.”

Congratulations to our dance champ Mayor Mark Jamieson has sent his congratulations to Bindi Irwin after the inspirational 17-year-old from Beerwah won the 21st season of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in the United States last Wednesday.

A crowd favourite throughout the series, Bindi enchanted the judges and the audience with her final emotive dance routine for the season, receiving a perfect score of 30 with her dance partner Derek Hough.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said Bindi’s victory was a remarkable achievement.

“She’s not just won ‘Dancing with the Stars’, Bindi’s won our admiration and our hearts,” he said.

Two champions inducted to Sports Hall of Fame Two outstanding female sporting greats were inducted into the Sunshine Coast Sports Hall of Fame at a special ceremony at the University of the Sunshine Coast last Wednesday night.

They are former Australian Open Women’s Touch representative Peta Rogerson of Mooloolah Valley and former Australian Test cricketer Kirsten Pike formerly of Glass House Mountains, both of whom have succeeded at the highest level of their sports.

Kirsten began playing cricket for the Sunshine Coast Scorchers 15 years ago when she was just 16.

Her career as a bowler included playing 86 Women's National Cricket League matches and 50 Twenty20 matches for Queensland with one Test, 26 One Day Internationals and 10 Twenty20 games for Australia.

Kirsten became the first female bowler to take 100 wickets for Queensland in the women's national league series and remains Queensland’s highest wicket taker of all time.

Kirsten is part of the well-known pineapple farming Pike family of Glass House Mountains, where her dad Gary and mum Kathryn and Brother Adam still live.

Peta Rogerson was selected in the Queensland Under 20s women's team in 1999 for the State of Origin Series, which Queensland won.

This was the start of her stellar State representation which continued through to 2015, with Peta captaining the Queensland Open

Women's Touch team from 2006 to 2014.

She became the first Sunshine Coast female player to make an Australian Open Women's Touch team when she was selected to compete at the All Nations Championship in 2005.

Her Australian representation went on to include three World Cup Championships, including two as vice-captain.

Speaking to Kirsten last week she was clearly very happy to be recognised in this way, and she was really pleased that her family could attend the ceremony.

Kirsten is also proud of growing up in Glass House Mountains and being School Captain at Glass House Mountains State School – even after all these years, she still remembers the school motto of tolerance, knowledge and truth.

Kirsten said growing up in the country meant that sport was an important part of hers and her sibling’s, everyday life, with her sister Rebecca going to America on a tennis scholarship.

The girls are not the first Glasshouse Country locals to be recognised in this way. Back in 1998 golfer Ian Baker Finch, originally from Peachester, was also acknowledge for his sporting achievements.

Taekwondo instructors from San Training Centre at Beerwah, Cameron Taylor and Kasia Bartnikowska, recently travelled to the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra to contest the Oceanic Club Championship selections.

Fighters from five counties in the Oceania Region contested the competition which offered world ranking points.

Unfortunately both fighters suffered losses in the first round against local fighters from Canberra.

Kasia found it hard to find her rhythm due to the fight being frequently stopped for malfunctions with the electronic scoring.

Cameron came out strong, knocking his opponent down in the first exchange but struggled from there, unable to find his distance with many kicks missing by only a few centimetres.

He came back in the second and third round and the score was close but he was unable to take the match.

The loss was a blow to 2016 Olympic aspirations

Kasia and Cameron at the Oceania Championships for Cameron, as a good result could have boosted his chances for selection.

Despite the loss, both Cameron and Kasia received points to their world ranking position.

Cameron is now ranked number 4 in the Australia Olympic division and Kasia number 10.

The aim is to maintain a position in the top five up to next May as this puts them in the shadow Olympic team for Rio next year.

The pair are now taking a few weeks off before commencing training later in December for more international events which already include a possible trip to America and a tour of Europe.

Cameron says he is feeling very motivated to train after the loss and wants to redeem himself in his next match.

Recently Glass House Mountains local Ron Gillander travelled to Las Vegas and he was keen to share his experience and tips to survive 15 days in Las Vegas.

Accommodation Hotels off Las Vegas Blvd (The Strip) offer lower room rates, particularly Monday to Thursday.

Usually there is less noise after midnight and cheaper meals. Free hotel shuttles are available to travel to The Strip. Hotel rooms don’t have refrigerators – they prefer you to drink in the Casino.

Meals Breakfast - TGI (Thank God it’s Friday) restaurants are good value Lunch - Look for pre-packed sandwiches and fruit from an ABC Shop, CVC Shop or Walgreens Dinner - Look for food halls offering a variety of food types (none are healthy!) Lance Palmer of Mooloolah was recently surprised to find out he was the winner of a ‘Jim Beam’ barbecue trailer worth over $12,000.00 saying he had never won anything, not even a chook in a raffle.

The prize was part of a National promotion through Bottlemart Outlets throughout the country.

Manager of the Beerwah Hotel Steve Holmes said customers at both Beerwah and Palmwoods Hotel, as well as their six Bottlemart Stores, had entered the competition which required them to purchase any Jim Beam product and then to enter a unique code via SMS and online for them to have a chance to win an ultimate Jim Beam BBQ Trailer which included a bar, stereo and barbecue.

Barbara Nye spent her childhood on a Texas ranch, where she said she was one of 11 children.

“I grew up climbing trees, running through the corn patch and making art from whatever I could find,” she said.

Barbara’s current work reflects her country background, and celebrates peace, natural beauty, and the appreciation of the simple joys of human experience. Her pictures speak of the extraordinary that is found in the everyday.

This latest series of mixed media artworks includes landscape, people pictures, still life and whimsical imaginings. Vivid colour and bold contrast are the hallmarks of Barbara’s unique style, which combines water media, painted pieced paper, and threadwork.

New memorandum of understanding The latest Memorandum of Understanding between the Sunshine Coast Council and the Friends of Bankfoot House was signed by Friends’ president Ron Gillinder and Community Relations Branch manager Claudia di Blasi on October 22 in the new Mary Grigor Centre at Bankfoot.

The MOU is a formal partnership agreement that defines the cooperative relationship between council, which owns Bankfoot House, and the Friends, a volunteer group which is active in the preservation of the historic property and the conservation of the collection.

The first agreement was signed by Caloundra City Council Mayor, Cr Don Aldous, and the foundation president of the Friends, Beth Hodge, in the former Caloundra Council Chambers in February 2008. The current Sunshine Coast Council Mayor, Cr Mark Jamieson, is a strong supporter of cultural heritage and Bankfoot House. The Friends look forward to continuing a positive and enthusiastic relationship with council.

The 2015 MOU is significant because it covers the newly-built Mary Grigor Centre, as well as the old House and the grounds. The new Centre includes a multi-purpose space available for community events, a workroom for the Friends and an archival storage room.

The work of the Friends includes gardening, housekeeping, cataloguing objects, photographs and documents, and showing visitors, including school groups, the House and its contents. The Friends also encourage use of the heritage precinct as an educational and cultural community asset.

Council’s responsibilities include heritage interpretation of the site, promotion of the site as a heritage property, grounds and building maintenance, security, cleaning, rubbish removal and the provision of IT equipment and access to the internet.

Charity Day success

Contributed by Chris Freshwater The ‘Forever Young Charity Bowls Day’ was held at Club Glasshouse on November 7 and once again was a great success raising funds for Cancer Council.

The venue was ideal with a fun game of bowls followed by the raffles and auctions. An amazing $5,651.75 was raised thanks to the generous support of everyone who attended.

An astonishing 85 raffle prizes and 33 auction items were donated. Wow! There are too many individuals and businesses to mention but a big thankyou to everyone from our local communities and those from outside our area who donated.

Just to let you all know over the last three years this special day has raised $16,343.35 in total. All of which has been donated directly to Cancer Council.

Thank you to my helpers, I appreciate all of your hard work.

Inclusive writing group for Beerwah Kindergarten those with Special Needs says thank you!

This is a wonderful opportunity to include Creative Services from Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, for those with special needs in our community. Currently we are not aware of any such services operating in our region.

EPICC (Enabling and Promoting Inclusive Creative Community) is a new project, which proposes to provide creative learning and socialisation opportunities for people with disabilities in our community.

EPICC will commence operation at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre in January. This project aims to provide an innovative, post-school educational experience designed to foster and enable the learning of new skills and strategies, facilitate self expression and provide socialisation opportunities in our local community.

The program will consist of literacy and creative learning experiences via writing and other creative modes including music.

Although the project is primarily being provided for youth and adults with disabilities, other interested persons are most welcome to join.

An experienced instructor will be coordinating, planning and teaching the group, and assistants will be available to provide additional support to individuals and the program delivery.

There will be explicit teaching in the mornings, moving into individual work in the afternoons.

The project dates for Term 1 are January 29, February 5, 12 and 19, March 4, 11 and 18 and April 8, 15 and 22.

Sessions will focus on creative writing and incorporate other creative aspects (music and/or art). The cost will be $50.00 per day.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest from people (with or without disabilities) who are keen to participate in this project.

Available spaces will be limited to 15, so please contact Sue Irwin or Debbie Rossow ASAP if this sounds interesting to you.

The Beerwah Hotel again hosted the Melbourne Cup Lunch and presented the children with a $515.00 cheque which enabled us to install a new interactive whiteboard.

Food donations required for Christmas

By Sonia Clark Beerwah and District Youth Community Centre (BADYACC) are calling for donations of food to assist them in making up Christmas hampers for local families in need.

Items they require include long life or non perishable food items including Christmas puddings or cake, breakfast cereal, long life milk and juices, canned goods,pasta, sauces, sugar and food gift cards.

BADYACC offers an emergency relief service every Thursday from 8.30am -12.30pm for anyone in the community requiring assistance with food, bills and referrals to specialist services.

The Centre also offers access to a number of affiliated services, information and referrals for all members of the community.

Services include the IFYS Youth Engagement and Linkage Service which offers assistance to young people aged between 12- 18 years who are experiencing personal problems but are not sure of who can help or where to start looking, and IFYS Reconnect - which helps young people and their families aged 12-18 years who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless.

Christmas donations can be dropped off at BADYACC, 13 Roberts Road Beerwah, Monday - Thursday 8.30am - 4.30pm. December 18 is the last donation date and then hampers will be provided to nominated families in the community.

Care bags for children of Domestic Violence

The ladies from Church on the Rise Mooloolah Valley have been busy in the lead up to Christmas hand sewing ‘care bags’ to brighten up the outlook for children who arrive at Domestic Violence Shelters on the Coast.

In partnership with other local community members and organisations, the ladies from Church on the Rise have taken the opportunity to show love and care for children who are the unfortunate victims of domestic violence - by hand making these beautiful care bags.

Often children arrive at the shelters with very little and these care bags contain toys, colouring in supplies and some basic hygiene products to assist the children at this difficult time.

The food and drink offer is popular not only with market shoppers but also with staff – certainly on a recent hot Saturday.

The barbecue gives lodge members the opportunity to dispense refreshments and goodwill plus advice about the 58-year old Masonic branch. Local membership is not high by football club standards, but a recent information drive produced three new members to add to the lodge tally of 21.

Sunshine Coast's ‘First Lady' turtle has arrived

Sunshine Coast volunteers were quick to welcome the first loggerhead turtle of the season, before staying on to protect her nest of Volunteers with First Lady eggs, on the beach at Point Cartwright recently.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Loggerhead turtles are endangered - there are only around 500 nesting female turtles in eastern Australia - and we are lucky enough to have around 70 nests each year.

“Our volunteers were able to tag and measure our ‘First Lady’ which will enable us to identify her over the next 30 years or so throughout her breeding life.

“And in another 30 years from now, we look forward to welcoming her young back here when they commence breeding. Research has indicated that only one in 1000 turtles survive to adulthood.”

Fast Facts • From mid-November to late January you might be lucky enough to see a nesting loggerhead turtle, or the tracks they leave behind once they have visited the beach. Loggerhead turtles nest along the entire Sunshine Coast and can lay around 130 eggs each per visit.

• How you can help: 1. If you see a nesting turtle call TurtleCare on 0437 559 067 or Coolum and North Shore District Coast Care, volunteers can then protect the nest from predators.

2. Switch off any torches.

3. Ensure dogs are secured on leashes and kept well away.

4. Remain very still. Turtles are sensitive to movement and are likely to return to the water if they detect too much disturbance around them.

5. Dispose of all rubbish carefully during turtle season.

• Hatchlings emerge late January through to April.

We are unable to offer any formal viewing opportunities on the Sunshine Coast as the nest density is too low. We recommend visiting Mon Repos in Bundaberg and participating in the nightly turtle tours for guaranteed sightings. In an increasingly stressful world, it is more important than ever to find something that brings us peace and tranquillity. We have an innate need to connect with nature and research has shown that being outside in the natural environment can have enormous positive impacts on not only our physical but also our mental health.

Studies have identified that as children spend more time in front of various screens, and hence less time outside, childhood obesity has increased, and mental illness in minors has also increased. At the other end of life, it has been shown that having green spaces around aged-care facilities has huge benefits for the residents.

For others between those extremes, there are scientifically-proven beneficial physical effects of spending time outside, including increased Vitamin D, better eyesight, healthier sleep patterns, and the benefits of fresh air and exercise.

Emotional wellbeing is probably the greatest beneficiary of time spent in a natural environment. Specifically, attention span improves, boosts in serotonin (the feel good neurotransmitter) occur, and there is increased activity in the parts of the brain related to emotional stability, empathy and love.

There are many walking tracks through native bush in our local area. Bushwalking is a great way to get out into nature, keep fit, while enjoying beautiful views, wonderful smells, local birds and plants.

School News Students take out award

St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School robotics teams have proven their capacity to be innovators of the future at the recent ‘First Lego’ League Robotics Tournament. The team of five students from Year 5 and 6 were lead to success by their ICT teacher Mrs Lauren Stanhope and her assistant Mr Blake Witham.

The team is very proud of their success in being awarded the Mechanical Design Award.

The robotics competitions allow the students to show off the skills they have acquired to friends and family while enjoying some healthy competition with other schools.

The students were not only responsible for designing and building the robot, to win the award, they were required to successfully present their design ideas to the Judges.

Six Landsborough State School Year 5 students have gained entrepreneurial skills by participating in Club Kidpreneur, where they created a start-up business called 'Beaduz'.The business sold unique handmade beaded bracelets at local markets.

Under the Landsborough's Kidpreneurs guidance of Peta, Sophie, Olivia (front) teacher, Mrs Ryan and Archie Heidy Rubin, students have been learning all aspects of business including coming up with a business name and logo, designing, making and finally marketing the product to sell.

Students took their product to the market to sell and they have decided to donate their profits to Cancer Council Queensland.

Mrs Rubin said the students were very entrepreneurial in their product designs and use of materials and were totally engaged and enthusiastic about creating and selling their products.

Roman feasts on the menu Year 7 classes at Glasshouse Christian College have been learning about Ancient Roman times in History and decided to end the year with an appropriate celebration. Roman food was ordered (pizza and garlic bread) and students came dressed in togas (old sheets).

Pastor Chris Johnson from Glasshouse Country Baptist Church brought his collection of ancient artefacts to show the students. While many of the items were high quality replicas, some pottery shards and coins were actually more than two thousand years old.

The artefacts provided a brutal insight into ancient Roman life. Students handled name plates which were chained around a slave's neck and bore messages like, ‘I am a runaway slave.

Return me to my master and be rewarded.’

Other items included pottery oil lamps, Roman coins, and a Bolinus brandaris snail shell which was boiled to make the colour purple.

Students were shown a replica tear vial and jars of real myrrh, frankincense and gold, but their favourite items were the gladiator sword, dagger and Roman helmet.

Following on from the success of concerts held in Maleny and Montville over recent years, the musical director of the Queensland Mandolin Ensemble, Joel Woods, will begin his debut solo tour of Queensland.

Celebrating the music of the classical guitar and mandolin, Joel will be performing on Friday, December 11 at a special concert at St Mark’s Anglican Church in Buderim, commencing at 6.30pm. He will be playing some of his favourite compositions for solo guitar and mandolin by Bach, Tarrega and Albeniz bringing a taste of Europe to the Sunshine Coast.

Joel has been much-loved in Montville and Maleny over many years in his roles with ‘Mandolins in Brisbane’ – as a player, musical director and conductor and will have an interested following for this concert. At an earlier concert this year in Maleny, Joel was presented

Joel completed his studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and graduated with Masters in Music Studies (guitar performance) in 2012. Since then Joel has performed as a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Mandolin Orchestra, Melbourne Mandolin Orchestra and the Australis Germany tour.

Having your music on the radio

It goes without saying that musicians like to be heard. Live performances are important of course, but being broadcast on radio, and an online presence is essential, if a musician is keen to take their craft and their career beyond the confines of their practice room.

Today I’d like to look at artists being broadcast and in particular the level of support being shown by local radio station, 104.9 Sunshine FM. Station Manager Greg McCosker, himself a songwriter with a fine pedigree, said the station is committed to the promotion of local talent and they plan to ramp this up in 2016.

That sounds very promising and if we look at the Sunday Showcase which began August 2015 (it still runs every Sunday for an hour from 3.00pm but in an altered format), we see a fine array of local artists were interviewed and had their work broadcast. Amongst them were: David Flower, Karen Law, De Greer-Yindimincarlie, Aliza, Kim Kirkman, The Strangest Dreamers, Solar, and The Goodwills; all artists I have had the pleasure of working with and consider amongst our best. But there are many more artists out there who should be heard.

And I have no doubt they can keep running this weekly showcase in perpetuity with the knowledge

that we have many exceptional talents here amongst us, who are making fine recordings of original music, all of which deserves to be heard!

Along with radio broadcast, musicians are very conscious of the need for an online presence for their work - once it is up there on the ‘net, it is available 24/7. So, although acknowledging that radio allows their music to be reaching people who otherwise mightn’t find them, musicians complain that radio is only good for the three minutes that they are being heard.

It is a fair comment, but Sunshine FM’s level of commitment might cause them to rethink that view. The 11 shows from the Sunday Showcase that featured artist interviews are available as podcasts for those who couldn’t hear them on the day. If you go to www.sunshinefm.com.au/ archive you’ll see the list of shows. Now that is impressive. I’d like to publically thank Sunshine FM on behalf of local musicians for such a level of support. It is the sort of thing I expect from a publically funded body such as the ABC, but it is very special when a community radio station takes their local engagement program that seriously. Contributed by Katrina DeClara The school library was packed to the rafters with parents, friends and siblings at Beerburrum State Schools’ recent Music Night.

The students presented an impressive program of music that delighted and inspired fellow students and audience members alike.

The evening began with a performance by the instrumental music band; who have only been together for a very short period of time; but came together beautifully for the pieces they played for the enthusiastic audience.

A selection of students, across Years 2 to 6, who have excelled during classroom music lessons were invited to play in the guitar ensemble.

The group silenced the crowd with their precise acoustic playing.

Both the junior and senior choirs also gave an outstanding performance and showed what fantastic results a school choir can achieve with hard work.

A big thanks must go to Ms Liz and Mr Williams for all the work that has gone into organising such a successful evening.

It was fantastic to see such talented young people with the confidence to perform the way they did. Beerburrum’s music program offers students such amazing opportunities and we look forward to hearing more of their talents in 2016.

Health Star Ratings key to beating childhood obesity Cancer Council Queensland is calling on Government and food manufacturers to use the Health Star Rating system as a tool for combatting childhood overweight and obesity.

Over 1,500 products now display the voluntary rating, and a number of major companies have reformulated their products to make them healthier and achieve a higher star rating.

Reformulation includes reducing salt, sugar and saturated fat and in some cases, increases the content of ingredients with nutritional benefits such as fibre.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift welcomed the report’s findings as a win for consumers.

“Universal uptake of the Health Star Rating system is crucial in helping all Queenslanders choose healthy food and avoid unhealthier options that increase the risk of obesity and cancer,” Ms Clift said.

Eating a poor diet can lead to overweight or obesity and increase the risk of a range of chronic diseases, including some cancers.

The Health Star Rating Scheme features ratings from half a star up to five stars and includes nutritional information about saturated fat, sugar, sodium and energy content in food products.

The scheme was designed to help consumers make healthy, nutritional choices at a glance, and applies to all manufactured, processed and packaged goods.

“Queenslanders have long wanted a simple nutrition labelling system to help them easily compare different products and make healthier choices,” Ms Clift said.

Research shows up to one-third of all cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes including eating healthily and maintaining a healthy weight.

If all you want for Christmas is a pet, think carefully It’s Christmas morning, you’ve been planning this for weeks, and now you can’t wait to see the look on the kids’ faces when they find the puppy under the tree.

The first day is full of fun and excitement for everyone in the family, the first weeks are filled with play, cuddles, walks, puppy school and more.

Then, the excitement starts to wear off, the kids go back to school, you’re back at work and the puppy, growing very quickly, is left home. Its new family is suddenly too busy to take proper care of it.

Sadly, this story is all too familiar for animal refuges across the Coast, with the three months after Christmas some of the busiest for refuges receiving unwanted pets that had been given as gifts.

Sunshine Coast Council Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said giving a pet as a gift was a huge decision. Whether for your own family or for someone one else, it should be thoroughly researched, planned and the recipient should be involved, she said.

“If you’re considering giving someone a pet for Christmas please make sure you involve them in the process, don’t make it a surprise,” Cr McKay said.

“While kittens, puppies and other pets are very cute, they are also a huge responsibility for the owner.

“Pets rely on their owners for everything from food, health care and shelter, to love and interaction, so it’s important to make sure the recipient of the gift is prepared for the financial and time commitment required.

“It’s also important to make sure that they have the appropriate set up at home to properly care for the pet.”

If you have researched, planned and decided you are ready to get a dog or cat this Christmas, then please consider adoption from one of the Coast’s animal refuges.

Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Manager Penny Brischke said they had lots of cats, kittens, dogs and puppies ready and waiting to find a new home.

“Many of these pets were surrendered by owners who could no longer care for them or who hadn’t done their research and weren’t prepared for the commitment,” Ms Brischke said.

“We would love to help you find the perfect pet for your family, that’s why our focus is on matching the needs of the pets with your circumstances and lifestyle.

“The great thing about our pets is they are all registered, up-to-date with vaccinations, de-sexed, micro-chipped, and they have undergone a health and temperament assessment.”

Drop off point for Kids in Care appeal

Glass House residents can help bring a smile to the faces of children and young people living in care on Christmas Day by donating a present to the annual Kids in Care Christmas Appeal.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP said locals could show their community spirit by dropping in and leaving a present under his electorate office Christmas tree.

“This year’s appeal acknowledges that it takes a whole ‘village’ or community to raise a child and we must lend our support to the hundreds of foster and kinship carers who do a great job all year round,” Mr Powell said.

“I am encouraging all Glass House residents to be part of the village and show they care by supporting our Christmas appeal.

“Our community is known for pulling together to help each other and this time we’re pulling together to show our support for kids in care.”

Mr Powell said presents like gift cards, sporting equipment, board games, clothes and books to the value of about $20.00 would be very well received.

“Our Kids in Care Christmas Appeal has such a positive impact in communities right across this state and we saw this last year with the true Queenslander spirit stronger than ever before.”

Presents need to be suitable for a child aged 0 to 17 years. Donations can be made to any child safety service centre, the Sunshine Coast ABC studio, or the Glass House electorate office located at Suite 4/70 Maple Street, Maleny.

The appeal runs until December 17, 2015.

Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council $1.1m Roys Road upgrade

As reported a major $1.1 million upgrade to Roys Road has started, making it easier and safer for motorists to travel between Beerwah and the Bruce Highway. The upgrades will widen the road and improve a 1.1km stretch from the Burys Road intersection to just past the old forestry depot. The work will certainly help improve connectivity to the highway and cater for the forecast increased traffic volumes.

Rehabilitating Old Gympie Road

The older section of the Old Gympie Road, 2.4km north from the intersection of BeerburrumWoodford Road, has seen increasing volumes of traffic for some time and in many places the edges have been under almost continuous spot maintenance, so I know the community will be pleased to see this rehabilitation work starting.

The work will strengthen the pavement and provide a new bitumen seal surface.

Storrs Road widens

Local Peachester residents will be pleased to see that safety upgrades will soon begin in order to widen and improve sight lines on Storrs Road.

Work includes earthworks, drainage, pavement marking, protective treatments and asphalting.

Peachester cemetery wall

The construction of a rock wall and pathway at Peachester cemetery is now complete. Both have been extended some distance to accommodate the mounting of additional plaques and accessibility. Just to be cautious an anti-graffiti shield has also be applied.

Playground equipment replaced

Upgrades to play equipment in Landsborough and Beerwah have also been completed recently.

The swing sets have been replaced and the bark soft fall has been topped up in Peace Park at Landsborough and Kindy Park in Beerwah over recent weeks.

I am seeking urgent feedback from the local community regarding any problems or concerns on the proposed Bruce Highway and Caloundra Road Upgrade project. These concerns can then be tabled at a public forum I have successfully negotiated with Main Roads to hold on Saturday, December 12 at the CCSA Hall, 1 Nutley Street, Caloundra from 9.00am – 11.000am.

Movember Update

You will all be very pleased to read that I have removed my ‘Santa Claus’ beard and am back to my clean-shaven self this month.

My unusual image did spark a lot of talk around the town and I hope that also included the importance of men’s health. I cannot stress how crucial it is for men to go the GP for regular check-ups. Make it at least once a year and mark it around your birthday or another significant event as a reminder. Thank you to everyone who also donated, I was able to raise more than $300.00 for the Movember Foundation.

Salvation Army Christmas Appeal Update

Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Salvation Army Caloundra branch Christmas appeal so far. This is the final call-out for people to please dig deep and donate non-perishable food items and back-to-school gear to my office that will go a long way to helping those in need this Christmas.

We often don’t see the face of people who experience hardship during this time, sometimes they’re people who have just lost their job or grandparents who suddenly have to care for their grandchildren. Re: report of proposed new tower in Glass House

Last week I read with pleasure the report that Telstra has applied to build a new tower in Glass House. For months I have been saying to a lot of people and at least one senior Telstra employee that they should build one in the grounds of Hanson Quarry or behind Cobb and Co. Last year I was told to go and buy a bulky and expensive sat phone. I declined as I remember the ‘Bricks’ that were the mobiles of the nineties.

Also last year I was on a tour in the back blocks of an island in Vanuatu and said to the driver ‘What happens if you have mechanical problems way out here’ he replied ‘I just pull out my mobile and call for help’. I must have looked surprised because he then said my phone works anywhere on the island.

For years visiting tradesmen, other visitors and my relatives, have been frustrated that they had no mobile reception here.

I ask my neighbours to let councillor Rick know we support the application. They are not asking to build a ‘high rise’ but really just another high tree poking its head up and we have a lot of trees in our line of sight here. I hope that by next year my communications will leave the 19th century and enter the 21st.

A great day out for volunteers!

Council took environment volunteers on visits to three rehab bushland areas and treated us to a boat cruise on Pummicestone Passage and a fine hot lunch at the Power Boat Club.

It was council's thank you to all the work done this year by the many bushcare groups in its area. Full marks to council's Community Partnership Scheme managed by Wendy Cliff and her team for all this, and the excellent organisation, including transport.

One of the sites visited was the wetland Rehab site at Emma Park, near the Coochin Creek Rockholes, Beerwah, where community planting is now complete from the South East Queensland Catchment Group grant and is doing well.

These plantings have been done by the Coochin Creek Bushland Group assisted by Glass House Mountains Advancement Network, and managed

by Peter Kluver. I gave a brief talk to an enthusiastic audience and conducted a short tour of this delightful area.

Council deserves great acclaim for its management of such area and its community support schemes - the Bushcare Groups are great fun for those who like to keep fit and be outdoors and are available to young and old. No previous knowledge

is required and they are an excellent learning experience, giving free access to lots of useful workshops as well as the bush work, so why not join one?

DIY or die

As an octogenarian, I needed some advice from Centrelink in connection with a planned downsizing from my current home to a secondary residence at my daughter's property.

The Centrelink website advises that before long all contact will be via the centrelink.gov website and will require all users to become familiar with this method of ‘self service’.

Having gone through the hoops of recorded voice messages and then eventually getting directed to the Financial Information Service I was entertained by some appalling baroque music for 32 minutes.

As I was beginning to feel nauseous my wife then called Centrelink on a mobile phone and requested to speak to a ‘person’. When this person was informed of the situation they said that was most unusual (really?) and because of my extended wait I would be put to the front of the queue.

Yep......you guessed it.....more of the same depressing music before I gave up after a further 10 minutes.

Could it be that this is a deliberate ploy to have ‘annoying customers’ hang up and let them get on with their bureaucratic business?

Is it any wonder that we have such a high unemployment rate when in every aspect of daily life we are required to just ‘do it yourself’?

The centrelink telephone service announces at the outset that the conversation will be recorded for training purposes. What a joke that is.

No doubt when Centrelink discover that I have millions tucked away under my bed they will have the hide to ask me why I was not aware that I needed to seek advice.

How disappointing

May I say how disappointing we also find it to hear that a local school is taking this line (Silly Season letter GC&M News Wednesday, November 18). How very sad that some people think that it is ok to be PC and forget that this country which is very tolerant of others beliefs, must be taught to down-grade our beliefs. Ok so maybe not everyone celebrates a Christian Christmas but those who do shouldn’t have to feel that they are wrong for wishing people a ‘Merry Christmas’ at this time of year! We will be doing as we always do, which is wishing everyone a lovely Holy Merry Christmas.

Double dipping?

Recently I helped an elderly gentleman move from his home in to a retirement village. He had some items that he no longer required so he suggested we take them to the recycle market.

It was all clean straight forward items, they had a look and told us to drop it off up at the bin to be sorted, and then asked us for $8.00. We refused to pay and took them to Lifeline who accepted it with open arms. It would seem that there is double dipping going on at the recycling centre.

RBA: Tighter regulations leading to better lending ASIC’s review of interest-only home loans, released in August 2015, looked at the big four banks alongside seven smaller lenders. While finding interestonly loans are more popular with investors, ASIC also discovered that lenders had been falling short of their lending obligations.

ASIC Deputy Chair Peter Kell said “lenders must have robust processes in place for assessing a customer’s ability to afford a loan, taking into account the increased repayments once the interestonly period ends”. www.gcnews.com.au

The findings are alarming, prompting recommendations from ASIC and the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority. Now, however, the RBA is beginning to see tougher lending regulations turning the slipping standards around.

In a speech to the Australian Property Institute’s Queensland Property Conference on the Gold Coast, RBA Assistant Governor Malcolm Edey addressed the newly tightened rules.

“The indications to date are that the supervisory measures are having a beneficial effect on lending standards

and are assisting in restraining new investor finance,” he said.

While put in place to protect borrowers and ensure all lending was carefully considered, the measures would also hopefully begin to cool the overheated property markets in Sydney and Melbourne. Mr Edey remains optimistic, but notes that it is too early to track much progress on that front.

Great eats and treats to find locally!

The Mailbox Cafe It was a really warm day, so Lea and I were thankful for the air conditioned comfort of the Mailbox Cafe where we met for lunch recently.

The cafe has a light filled, airy, comfortable and relaxed feel to it which is enhanced by the tongue and groove walls and high ceiling, colourful sofas and striking wall art.

On this visit I noticed the new outdoor seating area with funky red and white ‘air’ chairs that tie in well with the red mailbox theme.

As always I was impressed by the variety and wide range of tasty menu items on offer.

This cafe would have something that would easily suit everyone, from all day breakfasts, to both light and heartier lunch offerings as well as sweet

treats aplenty and a full page of kid’s menu child friendly meals and options.

We took a while to decide what we would eat, as there were quite a few tempting choices.

In the end Lea decided to go for the ‘house lasagne of the day with chips and salad’ ($17.50) and I went for the ‘Ricotta, Basil and semi sundried tomato, also served with chips and salad’ ($16.50).

Lea ordered the ‘immunity’ juice ($7.50) which was packed with fruit, carrot and pepper and made fresh to order, while I went for my usual caffeine fix of a flat white.

their coffee via mobile phone - which would be great if you were driving past in the morning - so I put the 0426 204 293 number in my phone.

When our meals arrived they looked fantastic and were extremely filling.

They were presented beautifully on a large bread paddle with a full and colourful salad and beer battered chips. These lunch options were definitely on the hearty side and would keep us full until dinner.

Although we were totally full after our huge but tasty lunches we eyed off the lime cheesecake $5.00 that looked amazing and was just one of the home made treats on offer in a cabinet full of lighter lunch gourmet options and goodies.

Karen and Spencer open their ‘Heart’ Local identities Karen and Spencer Shaw officially opened their Maleny retail nursery Forest Heart last Friday, with Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay, State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell, and around a crowd of 50 well-wishers in attendance.

“It is with great pleasure to officially welcome you to our new retail native plant nursery ‘Forest Heart’,” said Spencer.

“This has been part of our Brush Turkey big picture for about 20 years and a year ago we had the opportunity to buy the property at 20 Coral Street, Maleny.

“After lots of work, we now have a wonderful retail nursery specialising in supplying the local native plants of the Sunshine Coast and South East Queensland.

“At Forest Heart we aim to bring our knowledge, skills and passion for our local native plants and ecosystems to the wider community through supplying the best our native flora has to offer for all of your garden, bush food, timber and revegetation needs through quality affordable

stock and great advice.

Trema tormenta Do you want birds and butterflies in your garden? Plant a ‘Poison Peach’ (Trema tormenta) also known as Native Peach and Peach-Leaved PoisonBush.

It stands to reason that with a name like that it is not the most popular of plants but it is a great addition to the garden or mixed rainforest planting.

It is toxic to livestock but, typically, animals will only eat the leaves during drought conditions when nothing else is available.

It is a fast growing pioneer species to about 7.5m with a spread of 4m, will grow in a wide range of soils, and is not frost tolerant.

The birds and butterflies love it.

Brown Cuckoo-doves, Figbirds, Lewin's Honeyeater and Olivebacked Orioles enjoy the abundant small black fruit while the speckled Line Blue and Jezebel Nymph butterflies use it as a host plant.

Humans not robots

I want to write about the importance of remembering you are human… now that might seem a bit of a funny statement, so let me explain: Before I start this, I want to pre-empt it by saying that I am a firm believer in hard work – I work full time, plus I have other things I am involved in such as P&C, church and sports training.

However, the trouble is, due to the way our modern lives have become so busy and often hectic, we can sometimes end up feeling like robots – rushing off to work or school in the morning, getting home at the end of the day worn out and then doing it all again the very next day.

So often our ‘social life’ consists of checking our Facebook or Instagram pages or texting people - we wonder why we sometimes feel tired and disconnected.

Now, I know sometimes it is hard to make changes to our patterns of behaviour, but it is not impossible.

When we are at work or school it is important

In the bible there is a brilliant verse in John 10 v 10 where Jesus says: ‘I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full’. I think this shows us what God’s heart is for us. He wants us to have a happy, healthy and fulfilling life! You are not a robot. The bible says you have a God-given purpose and you are loved!

A very big ‘Thank You’ to all who helped at the working bee held on Sunday, November 22. It only took two hours to tidy up. There are still a couple of jobs to do for it rained on Sunday but it kept us cool whilst we were working.

We wish two of our Monday night tennis teams lots of luck in the finals of the Winter Competition. Our Div. 3 team, the Mystics and Div. 4 team, the Vipers made it to the finals.

The Committee wish to thank the Sunshine Coast Council for their support through the Community Facilities Maintenance Grant. We were again successful this year in receiving a grant for $2,000. This is to help with the running costs of our club and is much appreciated to help keep our club operating smoothly in2016.

Mooloolah state school makes a Splash!

On Thursday, Mooloolah State School held its annual swimming carnival at the school pool.

It was a fabulous day of sunshine and house colours. There were students, staff and parents pumped for the day to begin.

The day was filled with enthusiastic students swimming their hearts out for their sports houses.

They swam 100metre medley races,200metres, 100 metres, 50 metres, relays and the young ones swam 25 metres.

All students should be proud of their efforts and their exceptional team spirit. They did war cries and cheered their fellow team mates on. It was a fantastic display of true sportsmanship.

Ben is a member of the Maleny Judo Club and has been competing for the past seven years. At this competition he took out all three categories he entered.

Travelling to competition is part of the requirement for building up points for grading for his black belt.
