It isn’t often that a sporting team features on our front cover but this week we couldn’t go past showcasing the Glasshouse District Cricket Club’s passionate women’s team.

After one season playing in the local competition the team’s efforts have been recognised. And no, they didn’t win a grand final and they may not have won that many games but their spirit has been recognised.

of getting kids out playing sport and reminding them that it isn’t just about winning but participating.

I reckon these ladies are just an awesome real-life example of that philosophy. The age of team members varies from 15 to 50 and clearly it is the love of the game that they all share. Seeing them together it is obvious why they were awarded the Spirit of Cricket award.

Beerwah ANZ closure confirmed

After temporarily closing in June, then reopening a week later after a groundswell of local discontent, it has been announced that the Beerwah ANZ branch will permanently close next February.

Locals who are customers of the branch told GC&M News that they received an email last Monday advising them of ANZ’s devastating decision.

With the subject line “ANZ Beerwah branch is closing and we’re here to help”, the unattributed email gave no specific reasons why Beerwah had to close other than a general statement relating to “changing customer banking preferences”.

“Every day more of our customers are choosing the convenience of doing their banking when and where it suits them,” the email stated.

“To support our customers’ changing preferences, we’re making some changes to our Sunshine Coast branch network and as a result, our Beerwah branch at 66 Simpson Street, Beerwah will permanently close at 4.00pm on Wednesday February 24 2021.”

With Sunshine Coast Council planning designating Beerwah as a “regional business centre” – akin to the commercial centres of Sippy Downs, Kawana and Nambour – the loss of another bank branch could significantly weaken the town’s capacity to maintain existing, and attract new, enterprises reliant on access to a physical branch for business banking.

When asked why the branch had to close, ANZ general manager for Southern Queensland, Nathalie Hesse, said the closure was because local people weren’t using their local branch enough.

“People don’t use branches for their everyday banking needs like they used to,” Ms Hesse said.

“More of our customers increasingly prefer the convenience of doing their banking when it suits them. Our apps, internet banking and call centres are convenient services and we’ve also seen a number of passbook customers

opting for debit cards recently.

“While this clear trend has seen our customers change their banking habits in recent times, we recognise the transition will be more challenging for some customers.”

With Beerwah and surrounding townships having a high proportion of older and socially disadvantaged demographic groups, the effects of the branch closure are likely to cause significant issues with their account and financial management capacities.

Combined with the loss of the branch for small local businesses – like cafés, farmers and trades and services – the impact is likely to be felt across the region.

“We will work individually with our vulnerable customers to help them with alternative branches, digital options, using the contact centre more and debit cards,” Ms Hesse said.

“For our business customers we have relationship bankers who will continue to visit local businesses at their locations and be available on the phone. We also have mobile lenders to help customers with their home loan

needs where it is most convenient for them.”

Branch closures are happening across the nation, with more than 110 ANZ branches closing since 2018.

Branch closures mean job losses and although Ms Hesse says they will look after the local staff, nothing is guaranteed.

“We recently announced the closure to staff members and we will seek to retain as many of them as possible through helping them move into a range of new roles across ANZ where our customers need us most right now, such as our call centre, customer resolution and hardship team,” she said.

Bushfire warnings

As part of our bushfire awareness series, we spoke with the area director of the Caloundra Rural Fire Service, Matt Inwood, to give us an overview of bushfire warnings and how best to stay up to date during the season.

Q: What are bushfire warnings and who generates them?

Bushfire warnings alert people to what fire activity is occurring in a particular area and are a way of generating advice to the community should a fire be active in their area. The warnings are generated

by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) and take into account a number of factors, including weather conditions, which way the fire is heading and threats to people or property.

Q: What are the types of warnings and what do they mean?

There are three levels of warnings - Advice, Watch and Act, and Emergency. These warnings are consistent across the country.

Advice means monitor conditions and review your Bushfire Survival Plan.

When this warning is issued by QFES, it indicates a fire has started in the area but there is no immediate threat.

However, we strongly advise people to actively continue to monitor the situation and stay informed. Note the location of the fire, decide what you’ll do if the situation changes, tune into local radio or social media, and review your Bushfire Survival Plan.

Watch and Act indicates that conditions are changing and there is now a heightened level of threat. You need to be aware of your situation and take action to be prepared and protect yourself and your family. This is where you will be asked to either leave now or be prepared to leave.

With a fire approaching, you or your family’s life may come under threat and you should be well prepared to enact your Bushfire Survival Plan.

Emergency means you are in danger and you need to act on your Bushfire Survival Plan immediately. You will be asked to leave immediately, seek shelter or seek shelter immediately if conditions have become too dangerous to leave.

Q: What are the best ways to stay up to date with warnings?

There are a number of ways to tune into warnings and one of the best ways is to monitor the Queensland Rural Fire Service website www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au. Tuning into local media to monitor fire danger can be done through radio, social media and websites and can be particularly useful if you are already aware of a fire threat. A list of useful links is provided on the Rural Fire Service website.

Q: Any useful tips for readers?

It is critical that people have a Bushfire Survival Plan in place and I cannot reiterate enough the need to be prepared now. We’ve had very dry conditions and high winds lately that are conducive to increased fire activity. Make sure to clear up fire hazards from your property, ensure access to property, but importantly don’t leave it too late to be prepared. A battery-powered radio can be invaluable as a backup.

Finally, I’d like to extend my gratitude to all those in our local brigades who protect our community in times of crisis as we head into bushfire season. Many of our members are volunteers and it’s their goodwill and professional training that keeps our communities safe

Glasshouse team has award-winning spirit Car park ready to use

By Jennifer Kent While the 2019-2020 cricket season finished in February, the Glasshouse District Cricket Club’s women’s team were still celebrating their first season just last month, having been awarded the Spirit of Cricket Award by the Sunshine Coast Umpires Association.

The award is usually presented at end-of-season club awards but as there was no club presentation this year, the winning team was invited to attend the Sunshine Coast Umpires Association’s presentation to receive the award.

Team captain Kim Howden said the team was excited to have been recognised for their sportsmanship, particularly as it was their first season in the competition and, for most, their first time playing the game.

“I’m so proud of the girls and their efforts,” she said.

“They’re a great bunch of girls and we have so much fun - we often use more energy laughing!”

During each game umpires rate teams in relation to the team’s “spirit of cricket”. At the end of each season, votes are tallied and the winning team announced. The Spirit of the Game involves respect for opponents, the captain and team, the role of the umpires, the game and its traditional values.

“Being our first year in the competition we were all new to the sport and the umpires were really encouraging,” Kim said.

Leigh Owen and Levi Pearce (coach), with Kim Howden (captain) “What started out as a few wives and girlfriends of players from the club who were interested in playing last year, quickly turned into a team of 15 players,” she said.

The team is made up of women of all ages, with wives, girlfriends, mums, daughters, aunties and nieces all playing together.

“We have a number of returning players, as well as a few players coming up from the junior teams, this season,” Kim said.

The 2020-2021 season is due to kick off shortly and there’s a lot to look forward to for the team. With the support of coaches and the Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club behind them, Kim says they’re eager to win more games and continue having fun.

If you have driven past Pioneer Park at the entrance to Landsborough recently you may have noticed that Sunshine Coast Council has completed the $220,000 upgrade to the car park in Caloundra Street.

The old gravel surface has now been sealed and line marking completed to formalise bays, which allows for 54 car parking spaces including two disability parking spaces. Landscaping works and tree planting is still under way.

The Queensland Greens has named lawyer Raelene Ellis as its candidate for Caloundra at the state election.

Ms Ellis, who lives and works in Caloundra as a practising lawyer, stood in the Sunshine Coast Council election for Division 1 in March.

She and her family moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2017.

“We moved here to teach our daughter the value of an outdoor, healthy lifestyle, living with nature and respecting the environment,” Ms Ellis said.

She said she would be campaigning for more jobs for the coast.

“The Greens will create more than 2,000 jobs for the coast by investing in public housing, infrastructure, publicly-owned renewable energy and revitalising local manufacturing,” Ms Ellis said.

“We’ll fund this by making big mining corporations, banks and developers pay their fair share.”

She will also campaign for better health care for the elderly after caring for her mother with dementia.

“Our public health system doesn’t have enough hospitals, beds, nurses or

doctors. And it’s not just the coronavirus crisis at fault,” Ms Ellis said.

“The Greens’ plan will create genuinely free public health care with nearly 200 more doctors and nurses for the coast and 16 community health clinics with bulk-billing GPs.” Ms Ellis said her key concerns were honest and transparent government and putting people before profit.

“The major parties have failed our community for too long because they are beholden to their corporate donors.

“The Greens will never take corporate donations, which means we will always put the interests of the community first,” she said.

Born and raised in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, Luke spent his early year’s camping, fishing and playing various sports in the community with his three brothers and parents, enjoying the Australian way of life.

In 2002, Luke moved to the Sunshine Coast at age eighteen taking up a refrigeration and air conditioning apprenticeship following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps.

Business News New president for chamber

By Lea Parkes The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce decided that after all of the doom and gloom for local business in 2020 this year’s AGM would take on a positive and celebratory atmosphere with a dinner at the Beerwah Golf Club.

With attendance capped at 50 it was a full house, with representatives from many different business sectors coming together for a great night of catching up and sharing.

Following the evening’s AGM formalities the highlight of the night

was the guest speaker, local finger lime farmer Jade King, who shared her business success story with the group.

The AGM was pretty much business as usual, except that a new president and treasurer were appointed. After four years in the president’s role Ursula Starkovsky has stepped back to become a committee member, while Jenny Broderick moved from the committee to take on the role of leading the chamber into the future.

Michelle Christopher stood down as treasurer and Kristine Warren has taken on the job.

Thanks to all those who volunteer their time to ensure the chamber and our local businesses have a strong future.

Community News Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch secures new offices

By Sonia Clark After a number of years in the pipeline, members of the Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch have finally found themselves a new office and meeting space to call home.

Sub branch president John Nisbett said he couldn’t be more pleased that after four years of planning and consultation the RSL sub branch had managed to secure new premises at the Beerwah Sportsground, with the official opening held on Thursday, August 20.

John said the new meeting space, located in what was previously the BADYACC building, was a long time coming but sub branch members now had a great sense of relief and achievement in having a permanent place to come together.

“We had originally applied to set up a sub branch meeting place at the sportsground a few years back, which

was supported by the sportsground committee, and then got caught up in the regulatory process. Earlier this year Dave Weil, president of the sportsground committee, reached out to let us know the BADYACC building was going to be vacant and so we were immediately keen to jump on board,” John said.

A seven-year lease was signed in May and members of the sub branch moved into the building in late June to renovate the space. Internal walls were constructed to include office space, a new storage room and a place to hang memorabilia and pictures.

“We’ve been working towards this for the past four years and it’s a wonderful feeling to finally have somewhere permanent for our members to gather and to run our meetings. We hope now that we have an established place, we can also attract more members,” John said.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace and state Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle officiated at the opening ceremony attended by the sub branch members. Local pastor Aaron Jackson extended his blessings for the building.

Mr McArdle was keen to congratulate the sub branch members for their tireless commitment to achieve their goal.

“Congratulations to the Beerwah and District Sub Branch team. Without their dedication and drive this day would never have eventuated. I wish them all the very best for the future and this emphasises the strength of the sub branch,” he said.

Mooloolah men’s shed gets closer The Mooloolah Valley Community Association (MVCA) is one step closer to starting its long-awaited men’s shed construction project, with confirmation that the first instalment of a $250,000 federal grant will be released in the first week of September.

MVCA secretary Anita Verwayen said the project had originally been put forward five years ago but, despite community interest at the time, it had been put on the backburner due to a lack of funding.

Following a federal government election promise in May 2019, the MVCA was advised in August last year that it would receive $250,000 for the construction and fit out of the Mooloolah Men’s Shed.

The first instalment of $200,000 will get the project up and running for the estimated 30mx20m (including verandah) shed. Anita said they hoped to be able to announce the date of the official sod turning in the coming weeks.

Mooloolah Community Men’s Shed Association president John Holland said he was looking forward to providing a meeting place for local men to come together, be productive or just drop in for a yarn and a cuppa.

“This has been a very long time coming and we are looking forward to having the project move closer to completion,” John said.

“The men’s shed movement provides a powerful and proven tool in addressing men’s health and wellbeing, as well as providing a sense of value, community productiveness and mateship for its members.”

A public meeting will be held on Saturday, September 5 at 10am in the Mooloolah Public Hall to update the community on the progress of the project, with all interested people welcome to attend. To find out more contact Paul on 0427 482 782 or Michael on 0427 117 876.

Another community food pantry installed Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild (Woodies) have once again responded to a community call for their crafty assistance and delivered a second community food pantry to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC).

Following the recent installation of the first food pantry, demand has increased for the community-led assistance initiative, especially over the past couple of months during COVID19 lockdown.

MNC volunteers regularly stocked the pantry with non-perishable food items, as well as toiletry and sanitary hygiene items, but people were increasingly accessing the pantry rather than emergency relief from the MNC. The Woodies’ Thursday crew were tasked with creating a pantry that was both weatherproof and pleasing to the eye.

After numerous discussions on design and construction methods, and ample suggestions on improvements by selfappointed supervisors (aka general spectators at the Woodies’ shed), the cabinet was delivered.

Following a few hours of manual labour getting the foundations into the stony ground, a bit of adjustment with a spirit level and plenty of rapid-set concrete, all was in place by midday Monday August 3, and immediately put to good use.

The guild members were very pleased to be able to provide tangible support to the MNC and hoped the project continued to provide some relief to those requiring assistance in the community.

For those in need of basic necessities, the food pantries are available 24/7.

Donations of any non-perishable items are gratefully accepted and can be dropped off to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

Places & faces Hollie Morris has been running a monthly Circles of Sound event at Mapleton Hall since January. While the gatherings, created to connect and empower women through the power of voice, were put on hold in April due to COVID-19, they have recently restarted on the third Sunday of each month. We caught up with Hollie to find out more.

Q: Tell us about yourself and how you became interested in singing as therapy?

A: I live in Mapleton and will be graduating as a registered music therapist in November.

I have been on a learning journey involving singing, psychology and music therapy over the past five and a half years, and my main area of interest has always been the human voice. I am fascinated by the intricacies of the voice and how using it provides opportunities to express the many colours and depths of emotions. Early last year I was introduced to Somatic Voicework The LoVetri Method, an organised method of vocal training.

Q: What are some of the benefits of voice work?

A: Learning how our bodies make sound helps us gain awareness of unconscious mechanisms that strengthen the mind-body relationship and helps to remove constriction so that free expression and true sound may emerge. There are many benefits to singing, especially when doing it with others, including enjoyment, self-expression, social connectedness, reduced stress and enhanced wellbeing.

Q: Tell us about Circles of Sound?

A: The monthly Circles of Sound were created to connect and empower women aged from 13 years

to older through raising our voices, harmonising together, singing simple sweet songs and having fun in a pressure-free environment. The group experience is very much based on being playful with the voice and loosening rigidity by exploring funny, free and different sounds. The sessions have really evolved

since the start of the year and vary from month to month, but include singing, gentle body movement, breath work, meditation and creative arts activities all centred around reconnecting to the voice.

Maleny Show Society stalwart celebrates his 75th birthday

By Sonia Clark A large (socially distant) gathering of 60 friends and family of Ivan (Hank) Hankinson were able to come together on Sunday, August 16, to celebrate Ivan’s milestone birthday at the Maleny Showground pavilion.

His wife Kaye said it was a lovely celebration that couldn’t have been held in a more appropriate venue and a fitting tribute to Ivan’s incredible 30-year stint

as Maleny Show Society president and his 50-year born-and-bred involvement with the Maleny Show.

With the recent changes to gathering numbers, Kaye said

they were also very fortunate to be able to have so many of their long-term friends and family attend the occasion.

“We were so lucky to have so many able to attend and we just scraped through with the event before the numbers for gatherings were officially reduced.

It was a lovely day and we were so pleased that we could all come together and mark Hank’s 75th birthday with him - he had a wonderful time,” Kaye said.

Ivan and Kaye’s son Craig, daughter-in-law Amy, and grandsons Lachlan and Isaac were there but unfortunately their daughter Lisa and her family were unable to fly up from Sydney. Luckily, Lisa, husband Richie and young daughters Lexi and Gigi recently visited and spent quality time with Ivan in the previous months.

Ivan has been honored with life membership to both the Maleny Apex Club (a member since he was 18) and the Maleny Show Society. Earlier this year, he was also awarded a plaque of appreciation by the Showmen’s Guild of Australasia in recognition of his outstanding service and incredible commitment over the decades to both the Maleny Show and the Showmen’s Guild.

The gathering was followed by a smaller event to mark Ivan’s actual birthday on Thursday, August 20, where Ivan was able to enjoy lunch with a few close friends and family members at Beerwah Hotel.

Local magpie danger zones!

Magpie swooping season is upon us and Sunshine Coast Council wants to remind residents to remain tolerant of the protected native animals.

Council’s areas conservation officer Tyron de Kauwe says the birds often stay in one area for up to 20 years and can identify individuals by their facial features, even recognising people in their neighbourhood.

“When you see male magpies defending their territory, they’re merely defending their young,” Tyron said. “In fact only 10 per cent of breeding males will actually swoop.”

If you can’t avoid them, move quickly through the area but don’t run, and wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses or use an umbrella. Walk your bike in the area and, where possible, walk in groups. Remember that aggressive behaviour will only encourage defensive behaviour in the future.

We shared the message about swooping magpies on Facebook last week and asked people to tell us about some of the risky locations in the region. Here’s where locals say you should keep an eye out …

Kelly McCue solved her magpie problem. “I gave our local magpies a $5 tub of crickets a few seasons back when the nest was full. They have been mates ever since.”

Lauren Hatfield in Beerwah has also found the secret to harmonious living.

“Our magpies are pretty laid back - as long as I have water in the bird bath and a coir hanging basket to tear apart for nesting materials. They wander up for a chat frequently.”

New exhibition at Vianta Arts Sunshine Coast artist Jonathan Jones will display his art works in Beerwah during September, with the official opening on Friday, September 4 at 6.30pm.

Jonathan, who is a long-term resident of Caloundra, has developed a noteworthy unique style in both watercolour and oil.

In both 2016 and 2020 his artwork, in unique watercolour style, was showcased as a finalist in the celebrated and popular Local ArtistLocal Content competition organised by the Caloundra Friends of the Gallery, which showcases local artists and the Sunshine Coast region.

Jonathan is a devoted artist with a passion and flair for conventional realism and creative, restrained impressionism, with both genres at the core of his personal preference, recognised expertise and developing style in art.

His fascination with oriental art has also been emerging in recent years.

Progress on Beerwah Sportsground’s camping saga The Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee is one step closer to a solution in its drawn out battle with the Sunshine Coast Council over changes to its lease agreement.

State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle said this had been a saga for the management committee but perhaps a solution was in sight.

It was revealed in July that sudden changes to its lease meant the committee was unable to provide basic power to guests despite having council-approved power points at each of the 25 caravan sites.

Additionally, the lease no longer permits the sportsground to accept bookings from caravan clubs and associated groups.

Management committee president Helen Weil said she was pleased that a face-to-face meeting had finally been held with Council staff and the committee now has solutions

in sight.

“I think today is the start of resolving the issues that have been going on for many, many months,” Helen said.

“Together we have come up with some ideas for solutions. We’ve got a path we can follow now and it feels good that we’ve finally got some positive things that we can do to help solve the problems.”

Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce president Jenny Broderick said the meeting was a positive outcome for the committee as it provided a clear picture of what needed to be done to move forward.

“We need to get some proposals in and let council know all of the activities that take place on this particular ground, so they can understand the scope and the amount of involvement this place has with the local community,” Mrs Broderick said.

Scholarship success The Zonta Club of Blackall Range is following Zonta International priorities of education for women and combatting domestic violence with its recent scholarship presentations to Talia Rosa-Denham and Georgia Siddals.

At the club’s recent face-to-face dinner meeting, club president Ann Koenig presented local woman Talia with a certificate for a $1,500 scholarship for a humanities student. Talia is pursuing studies in the field of law.

Georgia Siddals was chosen to receive the scholarship for STEM subjects. Eve Jorgensen received an encouragement award for her outstanding achievements in art.

In her acceptance speech, Talia said her family moved from Brisbane to the range when she was very young. Her preschool and primary schooling were in Maleny and Montville, and she was a member of the Maleny Pony Club.

She still lives in the area.

Talia is currently in the third year of a Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast after originally attending the University of Queensland with a view to a career in medicine.

Deciding that science was perhaps not her path to helping people, she nevertheless undertook to volunteer as a medical assistant at a small hospital in Tanzania. Returning home she took “a leap of faith” and entered USC as a law student.

“At first I had no idea even what prosecution was. However, after

a couple of weeks of law, writing assessments and eventually receiving high grades, I realised I can’t imagine studying anything else but law,” she said.

Drawn to volunteering overseas and with her knowledge of the Spanish language, Talia visited Argentina where she interacted with young women in a prison for minor offences.

“I came to understand the law is not about punishing people in order to prevent crime but is about understanding the underlying issue of why someone has ended up in the criminal justice system.

“I hope one day to pursue a career in which I can help change the system of oppression in society … and continue a journey either working in human rights or an international security related field,” Talia said.

In line with the goals of Zonta International’s president Sharon Langenbeck, Zonta Blackall Range is currently partnering with other service clubs in Maleny and the Blackall Range in a combined project by service clubs to prevent domestic and family violence as a community effort.

The project is now branded with a stylised family group in ochre and the words ‘Speak up Now. Stop domestic and family violence’.

“Our community will be hearing more on this project as we roll out signs for men’s toilets like our ‘Zonta says NO’ signs against domestic violence in women’s amenities, and further activities,” Ann said.

Sunshine Orienteers, as the name suggests, is a foot and mountain bike orienteering club based on the Sunshine Coast that offers a range of cool outdoor activities suitable for all ages and abilities.

Committee member Deb Gordon said members ranged from those who enjoyed recreational classes through to those who prefer more challenging options suitable for athletes.

Deb said the club originally started as a foot orienteering club but over the years had started offering more cycling events. Currently club members engaged in an equal mix of foot and cycling activities, where participants use a map to find their way around a park or forest.

“We have a core group of members who love to regularly compete and then we have a strong cohort of social riders, mainly made up of families with kids, who prefer the shorter, easier recreational courses,” Deb said.

“People love that it’s a really fun way to spend a day outdoors in our forests and parks, it’s basically a treasure hunt on a bike!

“We also have a group of more elite athletes who get involved to increase their fitness and endurance, and to practise navigation for adventure races,” Deb said.

On the weekend of September 12-13, the club is hosting the Queensland Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships with three courses (including championship classes) to suit any rider, ranging from a sprint/ short course on Saturday morning, a middle course on Saturday afternoon and finally on Sunday, September 13, a long course throughout Beerburrum State Forest, Glass House Mountains.

This event has been named the Gordon Howitt memorial event after the Peachester local who was one of the club’s founding members, a tireless volunteer and long-term outdoor adventure enthusiast, who died last year at the age of 88.

Deb said Gordon was a phenomenal athlete in his own right, who could surpass people sometimes half his age.

He was a wonderful mentor and, with his wife Cath, was a tireless advocate for the club and the sport of orienteering and rogaining, the orienteering sport of long distance cross-country navigation.

Readers may also remember a story we published a few years back about Gordon’s successful trek to Everest Base Camp at age 83!

Ewen Maddock dam upgrade continues Natural Resources Minister Dr Anthony Lynham was in the local area last week inspecting the $24 million upgrade of Ewen Maddock Dam, which involves raising and strengthening existing embankment walls and upgrading the recreation area.

“Across the state, our publiclyowned water infrastructure has to meet modern engineering and safety standards,” Dr Lynham said.

“This project is part of an ongoing dam improvement program that ensures all of our dams perform safely well into the future.”

As part of the works, an innovative approach was used to lower dam levels that reduced carbon emissions and

enabled the lake’s recreation areas to reopen sooner.

Seqwater chief executive officer Neil Brennan said Seqwater, in conjunction with Sunshine Coast-based contractor Hall Contracting, installed six siphons to safely release water.

“For safety, the dam had to be lowered to around 60 per cent capacity to allow construction crews to raise and strengthen the embankment walls,” Mr Brennan said.

“By using gravity-based siphon technology in place of more traditional systems like diesel-fuelled pumps, we have reduced carbon emissions by about 235 tonnes.

“This approach also helped to reduce the duration of the project.”

Other news is that the long awaited second edition of the popular book

‘The Birds of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve’ edited by Greg Czechura and Graeme Chapman, is now on sale at The Discovery Centre and local bookstores.

Also, a new project of keeping memories of the reserve alive is being developed by the Sunshine Coast Council in conjunction with many local individuals and groups including FMCA. So if you have memories or photos of earlier days at Mary Cairncross and would like to be part of the project, which will become an exhibition for display, please make contact.

Community Groups CWA celebrate International Scone Day

First-hand experience

Contributed by Alison Sleath Maleny Visitors Information Centre volunteers experienced an enjoyable morning for their recent August famil, visiting a local business and enjoying their first famil since March when COVID-19 restrictions were imposed on us.

Our visit was to Deckled Edge Press, which is a small, boutique press in Maple Street, Maleny. The vollies spent time at the gallery viewing a delightful Fiona Dempster from Deckled Edge Press showing array of hand-printed cards volunteers a printing technique and gifts, as well as metal work and calligraphy.

Afterwards they enjoyed a chance to catch up with fellow volunteers during a coffee break at a local café.

The group meets on the second and fourth Fridays of the month. Our first meeting since lockdown will be on Friday, September 11 from 10am– 12noon at the Beerwah Hotel in the Sportsman’s Bar. As our usual meeting room at the Beerwah Library is not yet available to us, we are heading to the pub.

Our members travel from Maleny, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains,

Buderim, Brisbane and beyond. We are an active group of local amateur and professional writers who meet to discuss aspects of writing and publishing.

Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc Glasshouse History Group Inc Contributed by Anita Verwayen Our committee recently had the pleasure of finally meeting our new Sunshine Coast Division 5 councillor Winston Johnston during August.

Cr Johnston was keen to find out about our activities, programs and services (all heavily curtailed due to COVID-19 restrictions) and members of the management committee put on afternoon tea during the informal chat.

Cr Johnston was quizzed about council’s plans for the Mooloolah

Valley area, including building height restrictions, speed limits on local streets, hooning, population limits etc.

We were also able to give him an update on the Mooloolah Community Men’s Shed. The building work will commence at end of September.

Even though Cr Johnston’s schedule is as hectic as his predecessor’s, Jenny McKay, he will continue to support our organisation in the future and is welcome to visit any time he is passing through the area.

Landsborough Community Kindergarten’s nourishing self-care workshop, held last month, was a huge success. Event facilitator and Kindy P&C vice president Kate Manley said it was a great opportunity for women to block out some time for conversation and to connect with community.

“In a challenging year of isolation, the sense of community can be lost and it was great to see women of all walks of life coming together,” Kate said.

The evening was a fundraiser for the Landsborough Community Kindy’s P&C, which provides a great community support network not just for the Kindy kids but also for their families. Proceeds from the night went directly to the Kindy.

Living - Music Battle of the Bands showcase

By Sonia Clark Three of our local high schools - Beerwah State High School, Maleny State High School and Glasshouse Christian College - were featured in our August 19 edition cover story after they entered into a friendly Battle of the Bands competition. Each school put forward three bands to participate in the online competition, which is scheduled to take place in early September.

We thought this provided a great opportunity over the coming editions to shine a light on some of our emerging local talent. We kick off the series by featuring members of the three bands competing from Glasshouse Christian College.

Passion in Peace

The year 10 students said they chose the name because music is their passion and they felt that, through music, people could achieve a sense of positivity and peace.

Olivia said the group came together earlier in the year, originally through their music class, and they all enjoyed being able to meet outside school to express themselves through happy, uplifting music.

“We feel music is like a type of positive therapy and a way of escaping from the normal daily stresses of life where you can just forget about everything and immerse yourself into the music,” Olivia said.

Jacinda and Kirri said they focussed on upbeat acoustic covers from artists from their childhood. One of their favourite tunes to perform, as it also makes them feel happy, is ‘Put your records on’ by Corinne Bailey Rae. The girls hope future opportunities will allow them to perform publicly.

Calm the Wave Noah Fassy (lead guitar) and brothers Charlie (bass guitar, lead vocals) and Thomas Fishwick (drums, backing vocals) make up Calm the Wave. Noah and Charlie are in year 10 and Thomas is in year 12.

The group came together late last year and decided on their name through a group chat on Instagram. Noah and Charlie have played music together since year 7, and Charlie said it was great to be able to collaborate musically with his best mate and brother.

“Because we all know each other so well, we have the confidence to try new ideas as a band, which is great and we are able to push each other to do our best,” Charlie said.

Noah said although each band member had very different music preferences, they agree their sound has an alternative/indie feel with a definite rock element.

The boys cite Artic Monkeys, Royal Blood and Catfish and the Bottlemen as major influences, and hope to be able to eventually tour with their music.

The duo, who have been friends since prep and playing together musically since year 7, describe their sound as alternative indie.

They both enjoy indie rock and have a diverse range of individual influences, from rap to alternative. The artists they both draw heavily on for their sound include David Bowie, Mac DeMarco, Prince and garage surf rock band Skegss. Julian and Matt said they’d be keen to play live at future events.

Songwriters on the starting blocks Songwriters are often inspired by what is happening around them. They pick up ideas as freely as any other creative artist. It might be a relationship that has stirred them to put pen to paper or it might be a strong view they want to air.

We often think of a song as being either narrative in mode – think of something like Kenny Rogers’ ‘The Gambler’ – or as displaying an attitude to something – such as the Rolling Stones’ ‘I Can’t Get No Satisfaction’.

Some songwriters need a reason to be writing, others just sit down each day and get on with the song they are presently working on. Leonard Cohen would spend years on each song. Writing was his job and he agonised over every line.

Others no less famous, such as Bob Dylan, are able to write a song in a few hours. There is no formula to songwriting – each writer has his or her own method, and as any teacher will tell you, the secret is to find that method. What makes a great song? Some say an essential is the quality of the artist performing it. Others, of course, disagree - the song is all that matters.

The Glasshouse Musos has the honour of hosting the upcoming final of the Drift Eudlo Songwriting competition. It will be held Sunday, September 20 at the Eudlo Hall from 2.30pm. Songwriters appearing include the Dream Weavers (Mark Robin and Trent Finlay), Stu McGovern, Ninindi, Jeff Joseph, John Ross, Jacinta Foale and Jenny Fitzgibbon, Dean Martin, Jon Brown, Deni Chapple, Craig Mercer, Tony Mitchell and Pat Craigie.

At least two of the songwriters will win recording time at the Sound Space recording studio in Peachester. One will be a judge’s prize and the other an audience prize. The audience prize will be determined by the number of votes a performer gets. (Each performer and each audience member will be given a vote card and be able to vote for first, second and third places.)

There will be a $10 charge at the door. To determine the finalists there were 12 rounds in this competition. It began late last year and ended in March this year. The finals were to have been in April but the pandemic ended that plan.

There are two themes the songwriters can choose for the song they write for this final. One is the horrific bushfires that began in 2019 and so dominated the airwaves back then, and the other is the COVID-19 pandemic. As to how the writers might interpret the theme is totally up to them.

Hinterland Heritage Witta Sportsground and Rec Club 1920s-2020 In 1926 a generous donation of five acres of land was given to the Witta community by Mrs Otto Bergan to be used as a sporting ground. A trusteeship was set up and named the Witta Welfare Club.

The land was cleared and a cricket pitch established along with a pavilion style clubhouse. A tennis club was formed soon after, followed by the laying of an ‘ant bed’ (clay) tennis court. With the booming interest in tennis at the time, three courts were eventually constructed to cater for the popularity of the sport.

Witta Sportsground and Recreational Club

As time passed, the grounds were

further developed and the community called for the establishment of a football field and goal posts, which were well utilised for many years.

The area became a thriving hub of the Witta community, used not only for sport but also for numerous community recreational purposes such as dancing, card tournaments and social gatherings. In later years the previously named Witta Welfare Club became an incorporated body known as the Witta Recreational Club Inc. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s a number of changes to the clubhouse building were made, including revamping the old building and

and canteen/kitchen area and floor recoating. The entry to the grounds has also received a revamp with new post and rail fencing installed and more informative signage, and a new path leading from the carpark.

Currently the grounds enjoy a full year of field events including touch football, junior and senior rugby union clubs and a strong independent tennis club operating successfully.

With 100 years of community engagement coming up, the club is still run solely by volunteers and is available for community hire by community groups and locals for private functions.

Recycle right Did you know it only costs $20 to dispose of your old mattress at one of Council’s waste facilities? Spring, foam and ensemble mattresses can all be recycled effectively. The timber is processed into woodchips for particleboard, animal bedding and mulch. Environment Save the planet by staying in your car!

By Sonia Clark Many of us are familiar with the convenience of drive-through food outlets but did you know there is now a drive through for your recyclable cans, bottles and plastic takeaway drink containers for cash?

Through the Containers for Change initiative, the recently opened Urban Depot Recycle at Nambour now offers one of the easiest ways in the hinterland area to recycle eligible containers. So you can help save the planet just by staying in your car!

Business owner Jason Irwin said that as a father of four children, he was incredibly passionate about wanting to leave a better space for future generations. By making recycling as convenient as possible he hoped more people would realise how easy it can be to incorporate recycling into their everyday life and make it a habit.

“It’s great to feel we are contributing to a positive change and I can’t speak highly enough about the Containers for Change concept,” Jason said.

“I feel we are changing lives. People get extra money, which generally gets put back into local businesses and organisations, huge amounts of products are being kept out of landfill, and we are able to offer great local service, convenience and cash to encourage hassle free recycling.”

Jason said people could pack recyclable containers into their car however they like, with most people using boxes, bags or even wheelie bins! Items don’t need to be separated, although Jason said if customers were able to separate glass that would be appreciated. If customers could also remove the plastic lids from plastic drink containers that would be ideal, as it saved staff members a lot of time when sorting products.

While most people are keen to swap containers for cash, customers can also choose to cash in their containers using a scheme ID by downloading the app at www.containersforchange.com.au, which means they can drop and go and have the money refunded into a bank or Paypal account.

“We want people to have a lovely experience at our recycling centre and we want to make recycling as easy as possible so it becomes a convenient habit and they want to return again and again,” Jason said.

Bags of friendships formed You may have already heard about Boomerang Bags, the community initiative where fabric bags are made by volunteers using recycled materials as an alternative to single-use plastic shopping bags.

However, for members of the many groups making Boomerang Bags across the country, fun and friendship are important parts of shifting society’s throw-away mentality to a more sustainable revolution of re-use.

The Glasshouse Country group meet at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre every second Tuesday from 8.30am–12noon.

Community development worker Natasha Odgers said the group was a wonderful way for people to start conversations, make friends and up-cycle materials, and you don’t even need to be a sewer.

There are lots ways to be involved including ironing, cutting or just popping in for a cuppa. The ladies are also more than happy to teach others to sew the simple bags.

Those who have sewing machines are encouraged to

bring them along to the meetings.

If you love the idea but aren’t able to get involved in making the bags, you can always donate Bags are $1 each and can be cotton fabric, purchased at the neighbourhood including centre and the Everything Good doona covers fruit shop on Steve Irwin Way and sheets, by dropping them at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, opposite the Glass House Mountains Post Office, on weekdays between 9am12noon.

Bursary win for Ebony

Andrew Powell presents Ebony King with her bursary in front of her Year 11, Ag Science Class Member for Glass House Andrew Powell recently announced Glasshouse Christian College year 11 student Ebony King as the 2020 winner of the annual Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary.

“Ebony wrote a well thought out essay that highlighted the drought mitigation strategies that make up the New Bradfield Scheme, and the way it has the potential to create long lasting employment opportunities, food security, hydroelectric power generation and reduced runoff onto the Great Barrier Reef,” Mr Powell said.

Drought currently costs Australia an estimated $12 billion each year.

Ebony addressed this in her essay and reflected that, with increased climate awareness and understanding of the economic impact of drought, most people would agree the scheme would be highly beneficial and a wise

investment for Australia.

“This is the second year that I’ve awarded the bursary in memory of my friend and amazing community advocate Joyce Newton OAM, who passed away in 2018 after a struggle with motor neurone disease,” Mr Powell said.

“Joyce loved civic society – getting involved in our democracy, debating ideas, seeking to better our local community, our state and our nation.

“As a former teacher, she sought to instil the same love in our future generations. This bursary seeks to keep that interest and legacy alive.”

Organised in conjunction with Mrs Newton’s family, the bursary includes a $1,000 voucher to Concept IT at Maleny, acknowledgement and tabling of the essay in the Queensland Parliament, and dinner for the winner and her family at Parliament House.

By Sandy Johnson Audiences were certainly left wanting more after Glasshouse Christian College’s amazing performances of ‘Oliver!’ on Friday and Saturday, August 14-15.

With the challenge of COVID-19 and ever-changing restrictions, the musical seemed to be in jeopardy in mid-March.

However, the school’s head of arts Stacey Marshall and her dedicated team pushed on determined to not only put on a musical but to wow audiences with magnificent performances.

With so many other rites of passage cancelled or changed beyond recognition, it would have been a tragedy if these talented students, particularly from year 12, did not get one last opportunity to demonstrate and show off their talent and skills.

They would have also missed out on the incredible bonding experience formed through many months of working together on the project.

Originally destined for the Events Centre in Caloundra, current restrictions dictated a change of venue and the college was in a good position to hold the musical in its newly built undercover sports centre.

Bull, who provides a glimpse into the quality of the acting and captured the atmosphere beautifully.

‘Oliver!’ was a large production with 16 lead roles, 18 in the ensemble, 14 dancers, 18 in the orchestra, seven in the creative team and many backstage crew.

The students and staff cannot wait for the next musical as it will be the first to be held in the performing arts theatre currently under construction.

Providing a weekly breakfast is just one of the wide range of support services provided by Maleny High School chaplain Micah Jones.

The Chappy Breakfast Club has been operating for a long time and around 50 students eagerly mill around the table selecting delicious foods and drinks to get them going for the day.

Providing a good opportunity to meet before classes, it also gives Chappy Micah a way of making himself known to students.

This year in particular, with the COVID restrictions impacting on school activities, the work of people like chaplains has become even more important in helping students and families to handle the challenges.

The breakfasts are made a lot easier through the generosity and assistance of community members and businesses like local businesses Maleny Bakery, Maleny IGA, Maple Street Meats and Buck’s Bakery in Landsborough.

Kandoo Joeys Play Steps playgroup Beerwah State School has recently connected with early years play-based program Play Steps. The innovative strengths-based playgroup model has been incorporated into the school’s Kandoo Joeys playgroup, which operates at the school on Tuesday mornings.

School principal Janet Austen said she was pleased that the school was now offering this model of supported playgroup that was specifically tailored to school settings.

“It’s a lovely way for parents to meet others in our community and for families

to enjoyably familarise themselves with a school environment,” Janet said.

Kandoo Joeys Play Steps playgroup offers a fun play-based learning environment, where parents stay, play and learn with their children in a nurturing, safe space.

The name Kandoo Joeys also linked nicely with the school’s Kandoo kangaroo mascot, which represents the Positive Behaviour for Learning Program and inclusion in a ‘Kan Doo’ community.

“We thought it was a really cute name for our playgroup and we are so pleased to be able to extend support to our families,” Janet said.

“This is a great way to work with our local community to create and provide opportunities for every child to learn through play, while supporting a successful transition to school.”

Some recent playgroup activities have included a nature month focus with some great nature play activities and a special invitation for children to bring their favourite teddy for a teddy bear’s picnic at the school’s very own bush classroom.

Delights of children’s poetry Mapleton author, teacher, writer, blogger and poet Marg Gibbs has recently published a collection of 40 poems for children.

Sitting down one day she wrote the names of each of her ten grandchildren and beside their names wrote the things that they liked or were connected to.

Marg decided that a gift of poetry could be her way of showing them how much she loves them.

The collection’s title ‘Goose at the Gate’ is based on Marg’s own family nickname of Goose, which she explained has stuck with her for a long time.

The poems were written during the lockdown when Marg could write daily and use her imagination.

“I had a lot of fun making this book and many of the poems are best read aloud to appreciate the pace and rhythm,” she said.

Marg worked with illustrator Margeaux Davis, who created some lovely watercolours to complement the poetry.

It’s been a busy year for Marg as she is also selling her book ‘Jasper’s Jumbled up Words’, a picture story about language and communication of a small boy who wants to be understood.

You Said It Just disgusting

On August 14 at 7.30pm we visited Happy Valley to let the children play in the playground while some went on the Ferris wheel.

Imagine my horror when taking a young child to the toilets to find not only toilet paper flung everywhere but used sanitary pads were laying on the floor.

I could not see any receptacles for them in any toilet and no one wants to walk out of a toilet block to look for a bin to dispose of them.

Are there no cleaners allocated to clean these toilets after hours?

It is just disgusting in these times of COVID-19 that this occurs.

Re page 14 of GC&M News’ August 18 edition, it is genuinely good to see Andrew Powell, MP for Glass House, supporting some local infrastructure projects such as the upgrade of the Kilcoy-Beerwah Road and Old Gympie Road intersection at Beerwah.

All four projects that Powell mentions in his latest newspaper advertisement were in fact financed and delivered by the Palaszczuk Labor government.

You’ve got to wonder that if Powell thought that flashing school zone lights at Peachester and Glasshouse Mountains State Schools were a good idea, why didn’t he deliver them when he was a cabinet minister for three years in the LNP government?

Coronavirus treatment

What is wrong with Australia’s health system?

Australian Professor Thomas Borody, famous for his development of a cure for peptic ulcers in 1987 that has saved hundreds of thousands of lives, believes that COVID-19 is curable and it’s easier than treating the flu. His therapy is simple, safe and gets rid of the virus in almost all patients treated within six to ten days.

Based on existing research and his analysis of therapeutic results it uses the drug ivermectin in combination with doxycycline and zinc.

These are old, well-tested generic drugs approved by the TGA and FDA for treating other health conditions.

So why isn’t it being used to treat the elderly patients in Melbourne nursing homes who are dying every day from the virus?

He thinks that it is because big drug companies are not recommending its use as there are no large profits to be made from old generic drugs.

It took 26 years for Professor Borody to develop his peptic ulcer cure because no company would support his work and this appears to be a similar situation where politicians and medical specialists are not prepared to challenge the status quo.

The definition of insanity is repeating the same errors and expecting different results. To my mind it is criminal not trying this treatment when existing methods obviously aren’t working and people are dying.

Being in the dangerous 70-80-yearold bracket, I will insist that this ivermectin therapy is used if I catch the virus.

What have I got to lose? Only my life!

Bike path

I’m stoked to see that there’s going to be a bike path between Glass House and Beerwah. I’m moving from Beerwah to Glass House soon and my son is going to Beerwah State School.

A bike path means he’ll be able to ride safely to school and stay fit at the same time. Plus, he and I will be able to go for rides together during my days off work. How brilliant is that!

Beyond comprehension

I have been in business for 30 years and have dealt with Telstra on countless occasions. Always used to get a result and, yes, sometimes with frustrations. However, what I see happening now is beyond comprehension.

Telstra does not seem to employ any people anymore, at least not locally.

You can only chat to someone who really cannot get anything done. You get one phone number after another after another after another only to chat again with no result and another number to ring so you can have another useless chat.

The job is simple - after three weeks, more than seven hours of calls and chat, logging the job on mission control was also just for another phone number and, guess what? More chat with a virtual friend who did not know the answer.

A complaint logged with the ombudsman on August 6 about another issue for the same client was ignored completely.

I have not in all my working life seen such incompetence and blatant disregard for customers. Yes, we have a pandemic, but this is no excuse for such disgraceful behaviour.

The client is a million dollar-plus business and is on the verge of losing part of the communications badly needed.

Could you possibly point me to a person with authority and the knowledge to do a simple job that might take about 20 minutes at best? This would be much appreciated. We have just two weeks to get this sorted. After that, the business will suffer badly.

Queensland schools are the worst funded in the country. Educators need more resources and less political interference. $31 million buys a lot of jobs for our little communities.

In the August 19 edition of GC&M News we reported on a boost to mobile phone coverage since a new mobile base station was switched on at Glass House Mountains. We asked readers if they would like better mobile coverage in their areas.

Here are some reader responses we received to the challenges facing some local residents.

I have been a long-time property owner in Peachester and three years ago returned here as a resident.

Mobile phone reception was way below acceptable at that time, so I got by with boosters and as long as I did not move too much, I could hold a conversation.

When I moved back here there was the promised NBN tower just at the end of my road with an added bonus of an Optus mobile phone facility, so I thought I will just hang in there until reception gets better.

There was a lot of controversy about this NBN tower, as you well know, but it eventually did get built late last year.

I have checked all the drawings that were submitted at the time and can confirm that all the proposed Optus

equipment was installed and is visible.

The NBN facility has been operational since last December. I have been asking Optus for months now why their equipment has not been switched on and brought on line.

Talk about frustration ... no matter which way I approach Optus, I am hit with a massive brick wall. “Sir, all our equipment is operating. Yes you are in a poor reception area.”

I keep trying to tell them that they have invested in an NBN tower and their equipment is clearly visible and could solve all Peachester’s mobile phone problems.

But their left hand clearly does not know what their right hand is doing.

I know that no matter which way you try to communicate with Optus you end up in a call centre in Asia somewhere.

Optus (the call centre) is ignorant of the fact that Optus (the network engineer) has spent a bucketful of money on equipment and it is incapable of communicating that fact to its management.

The mind boggles!

At Twin Cedars over 50s lifestyle village on Steve Irwin Way at Beerburrum we have been plagued with mobile phone issues for years.

Telstra advised us that we are in a black spot. Not sure if the proposed tower will help but would like to see some commitment to our village due to the amount of people affected here, about 160 people.

I would also like to enquire if the new

tower at Glass House has affected our signal here due to many complaining about slow service in texts this last week or so since the Glass House tower has come on line. I have not been able to receive online banking codes within the allotted time. I have waited up to two hours to receive them, meaning I have been unable to do those transactions on my internet this past fortnight.

On the Menu with Lea Parkes

Club Glass House

We were excited to be able to head over to Club Glass House last week for dinner to try out a meal prepared by their new chef Alec.

Fortunately for us Alec was very accommodating and happy to pose for a photo and, even more importantly for us, prepared us a really tasty meal.

Alec said that for the past six years he had been working in cafés, where he has honed his breakfast and lunch menus. Before that he did his apprenticeship at the Beachmere Tavern.

After only a week in the job, Alec seems really impressed with both how warm and welcoming the Club Glass House team are, as well as how friendly the customers are.

Since the club reopened its dining room it has launched a new menu, with some quirky new additions including cheeseburger spring rolls and popcorn karaage chicken as well

as retaining popular classics.

I always like to give the new menu options a go, so I went with the winter warmer special - a housemade red wine and rosemary pie with a parmesan potato top served with potato wedges and salad, which was amazing.

Brownie was happy to see that slow cooked pork ribs were still on the menu and went with them, which he gave two thumbs up and even managed to get through the rather generous serving.

Like everywhere these days, there are limits on the number of diners the club can serve, so my tip is definitely to phone ahead and make sure you have a booking!

And if you are heading down to the club for lunch or dinner sometime soon, make sure you say hi to chef Alec and give one of his yummy meals a try.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Fairies in the garden By Jane McGibbon In these uncertain times, little pops of joy are just what we need and what better source than our adorable native fairy wrens? Of the ten species found in Australia, three frequent the Sunshine Coast area – the red backed, superb and variegated fairy wrens.

Fairy wrens are primarily insectivorous but they also feed on grass seeds, flowers and fruit.

Breeding males of all species have extravagant plumage. Unusually, when they are not breeding males are grey-brown, similar in colour to females and juveniles. This is probably to reduce the risk of predation as bright colours make them more conspicuous.

Predators targeting these little birds include magpies, butcherbirds, kookaburras and crows, as well as introduced mammals such as cats, rats and foxes.

They may look cute and innocent but fairy wrens have been labelled the most unfaithful species in the bird world.

Groups consist of a main breeding pair but both partners frequently mate with other individuals.

A possible explanation for this is that laying lots of eggs fertilised by different males increases the genetic diversity of offspring. All birds in the group assist in defending territory and feeding and rearing the young.

The best way to encourage these little delights to your garden is to plant a thicket of dense bushes, such as hakeas, bush peas, prickly-leaved paperbark or prickly moses, to provide nesting habitat and protection from predators. Also include species with small insect-attracting flowers, such as Crowea species, tea trees and dwarf flowering gums.

Place a bird bath close to the bushes and sit back and wait for your tiny visitors.

Support for sustainable farming New grants of up to $100,000 are available for farmers in the hinterland right now under the Morrison government’s Smart Farms Small Grants program. I announced one of these grants for the Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group in 2018 to help 30 local beef graziers learn best practice techniques in soil, fertiliser, grazing and water management. Supported with a grant of $50,000, I know that this project has been progressing well ever since and I want to see more funding like this coming to the hinterland.

You can apply now for funding for one- or two-year projects that support sustainable farming awareness, skills and capacity in areas like pest control, vegetation management, efficiency, the use of new technology and climate management. Tour de Fisher Thank you to everyone who took the time to meet me at a listening post on my recent Tour de Fisher.

I spoke to dozens of local residents across the week and one thing is very clear - Sunshine Coast locals are resilient, they are determined to get through this crisis and they are quietly optimistic that we can build a better Sunshine Coast on the other side of this pandemic. Bells Creek arterial road construction Last month I had the great privilege of announcing that an LNP government will commit $35 million towards completing the construction of Bells Creek arterial road so that it joins the Bruce Highway to Caloundra Road passing through Aura.

While this may seem like an infrastructure project that only benefits those in the new suburbs of the Aura development, I can assure you the impact of bringing the construction forward by up to 10 years will have a positive impact on people living in our hinterland towns such as Beerwah and Landsborough and wider afield.

On the Sunshine Coast we are blessed with an abundance of nature to spend our down time enjoying. The hinterland offers scenic trails through lush ranges and waterfalls that are great for walking, hiking and cycling.

However, for so many the call of the ocean dominates and brings them to the coast.

How many Saturday mornings have you spent sitting on Caloundra Road – the longest carpark on the Sunshine Coast – trying to get to our beautiful beaches?

Locals know that the traffic congestion isn’t just a peak hour phenomenon – it is constant.

This is not how people should be spending their hard-earned days off.

By connecting Bells Creek arterial road to the highway, hinterland residents will have the option to access Caloundra via Roys Road, avoiding Steve Irwin Way. There will also be less congestion on Caloundra Road, not just for people wanting to access Caloundra but for those in Caloundra wanting to visit our hinterland. It is a win all around.

Newest Local Heroes Round three of my Local Heroes grants for 2020 closed with quite the pile of applications! I love to read all your submissions and help where I can but I have to say that it is always so hard to choose just four winners each round. After much deliberation, I granted $250 each to the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce to sponsor and promote their AGM, the Maleny Chamber of Commerce for their new Maleny Gift Card, the Maleny Rotary Club for their drive-in winter blues concert held last month and Arts Connect/Sculpture on the Edge to hold a garden sculpture event later this year.

Montville meet the candidates Recently the Montville Village Association put on the first meet the candidates evening for the 2020 state election. I’ve always enjoyed these events as they are the perfect opportunity for voters to get in front of their candidates and have their questions answered on the spot.

If you’re not sure who to vote for, these events can help you make that decision with opportunities to hear from each candidate on their vision for the seat.

I hate leaving a job half finished and in Glass House I still have plenty more I want to achieve.

It was good to be able to share my vision for Montville and I look forward to more events just like this in other parts of the electorate.

Beerwah park upgrades complete I’m pleased to advise that the latest stage of works at the much-loved Turner Park is now complete.

Works have also been completed at Twin Peaks Park where you’ll find a new table and seating, playground edging, refreshed soft fall and fresh turf.

Improved parking in Landsborough There’ll be no more parking on gravel or dusty cars for motorists who use the Caloundra Street car park in Landsborough. The car park, north of Pioneer Park, has been sealed and there are now 54 formalised parking spaces, including two disability spaces, improving safety and accessibility.

Landscaping works in the area are now in progress.

Maleny upgrades under way Preliminary clearing works have been completed at the four major lookouts around Maleny, with council staff hard at work to keep them tidy, well maintained and with adequate signage. I’m also pleased to announce a $100,000 upgrade will begin after the September school holidays (weather and site conditions dependent) to improve the picnic areas at Mary Cairncross Park, Maleny.

Wild dog baiting begins Council, in partnership with Biosecurity Queensland, is supporting a community-based coordinated wild dog baiting program.

Failure to control wild dogs can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna.

Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land and participation in this program is an effective way to help meet this responsibility.

The wild dog baiting program started on August 31 in Bald Knob, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Belli Park, Cambroon, Conondale, Coochin Creek, Crohamhurst, Curramore, Elaman Creek, Gheerulla, Glass House Mountains, Kenilworth, Kidaman Creek, Landsborough, Obi Obi, Peachester, Reesville, Witta and Wootha areas. It will continue until September 25.

Written notification will be provided to residents within the baiting area. Please contact council if you have any questions.

Noticeboard Visitor Information Centre AGM Contributed by Alison Sleath Volunteers from the Maleny Visitors Information Centre gathered for their AGM at King Ludwig’s German Restaurant in Maleny on August 18.

A wonderful morning tea was provided and enjoyed with coffee prior to the meeting.

The AGM, which included voting for the committee, was completed and

then we all appreciated an informative address by Nicole Hilton, the Maleny Commerce president.

Nicole provided us with information regarding the role of Maleny Commerce within the community and discussed the Maleny gift card, which then led to questions from our volunteers. Thank you to Nicole and King Ludwig’s for an enjoyable AGM morning.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in September Watch out for rampant lawn weeds, especially bindi-eye, clover and flatweed (or cat’s ear).

• Grow any herbs now – except for basil (it’s too early) and coriander (it’s too late).

• Prune edible fig trees. Be very vigorous – one-third can be cut off.

Figs are only produced on the new wood of the new season’s growth.

Give them a good feed of general fertiliser.

• It could be a few months before we get good soaking rains and the drying September winds will suck the moisture from bare soil, so mulch your gardens to keep in the available water.

• Dig up and divide canna lilies.

Water them in well with a seaweed solution.

• It’s a good month to start the fruit orchard – plant mango, pawpaw, avocado, custard apple, carambola and sapodilla.

ASK BROWNIE It is a problem I and a lot of other people who have citrus trees in the Maleny area experienced this year.

I have grown them for years in my home orchard and they are usually trouble-free, just fertilising at the appropriate times and some annual pruning.

However, this year we have had almost no fruit. The problem could be caused by a small insect noticed after fruit set. We would like to take preventive measures next autumn, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Nearly everyone had citrus problems early in the season leading to a poor harvest for many.

The main culprit was the fruit-piercing moth – a large, stout-bodied native moth with a long feeding tube that they use to pierce the skin of a variety of fruits and feed on the fruit juices.

Once pierced, the hole is an opening for bacteria and fungi to infect the fruit, creating bad spots and spoiling the fruit.

They have a liking for most types of citrus but also attack banana, guava, kiwifruit, lychee, mango, pineapple and even melons, tomatoes and passionfruit in bad years.

Although they are around for the whole year, the worst period for moth activity is late summer/early autumn.

Gamgee trap This last season seemed to be the worst we’ve had for quite a few years.

However, your problem appears to be something different as you say there was a small insect after fruit set and you had little fruit develop.

Without a description or photo, it’s hard to give a definitive answer.

This was a particularly active year for red-shouldered beetles so it may have been these you were seeing.

They tend not to cause too much of a problem for citrus, other than eating some of the leaves.

So it probably wasn’t them causing your fruiting failure.

I suspect you will never find the answer. Sometimes local conditions create a poor fruit-set season – and maybe it was just your turn.

However, take heart as your citrus should be bursting into flower at the moment (or just finished) and so keep an eye on anything unusual again and let me know.

Bird netting

Just keep doing your usual – water well when dry, feed four times a year, prune after cropping (but not now as you’ll prune off the next season’s citrus).

For those who had fruit-piercing moth problems the only real solution is to net or bag the fruit. There isn’t any lure bait or deterrent that gives a consistent result. The Department of Agriculture recommends going out at night with a torch and squashing them … their eyes glow bright red in torchlight, so are easy to find that way.

Or you might like to try a Gamgee trap, developed by local fruit grower Fred Gamgee in the 1990s. It’s a netting funnel-type trap. To learn more, see the YouTube video www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SCjVJwRclk.

Take care when backburning

ASK BROWNIE Chris Bruhn of Landsborough called to ask about mangoes, avos and citrus.

He said that last year his mangoes had heaps of flowers but very little fruit. He wants to know why and how he can encourage better fruit set. For those that do set, he wants to know how to stop them falling early or getting brown spots.

Chris also has a problem with avocados not setting fruit either. To boot, he asks for some general care and maintenance tips for his citrus.

That’s a lot the try to get through.

Both mangoes and avocados are very touchy from flower formation to early fruit set … mangoes tend to be the worst of the two.

It really is hit and miss and depends on whether the trees fruited heavily last year (they like to rest afterwards), what the winds and rains have been like (too much of each is no good), if there has been adequate pollination, and whether the trees are stressed by being thirsty and dry during flowering.

In reality, it’s just something you have to live with unless you’re a fruit tree farmer and can spend lots of time looking after their every need.

Some years you’ll have good crops, some awfully bad, and then everything in between.

Younger trees tend to suffer from irregular fruit set more than older trees.

In mangoes, cooler nights (below 15 degrees) when they are flowering can inhibit pollination by reducing pollen viability.

Citrus

And any stresses after flowering tend to cause flower drop.

Overuse of nitrogen fertilisers is also a problem, as mangoes and avos then put more energy into making leaves and less into setting flowers into fruit.

Avocado flowers are interesting. They have both the male and female parts in the same flower (called bisexual flowers). On the first day the flower opens the female parts are functional and on the second day the flower opens (it only opens for two days) the male parts are functional.

Generally, a run of days with minimum temperatures above 10 degrees and maximums over 16 degrees is also necessary for avocados to achieve effective pollination.

The brown spots on mango fruits are caused by the fungal disease called anthracnose.

It is widespread and common and very hard to eliminate.

The best option is to control the disease early by spraying with a fungicide product from flower set onwards. If the trees are smaller, it is easier to treat them. If they are large, it’s probably impossible.

Copper-based sprays or fungicides like Mancozeb are usually used.

It’s best to speak with someone from one of our local hardware or produce stores about the best alternatives for you on this front.

Growing citrus … it’s a bigger topic again.

The best thing to do is to point you in the direction of a good book on the subject, and the best I’ve found is called ‘Citrus. A gardener’s guide’ written by Bruce Morphett and Ian Tolley.

Ask at one of the local bookshops and they should be able to order it in. It’s not too expensive – under $25. Or check one of the libraries for a copy.

With fire season upon us, Energex is urging property owners to take extra precautions while conducting controlled burns near the electricity network.

Energex area manager Graham Burke said landholders needed to be aware of the dangers associated with power poles being damaged or destroyed by fire.

“We’ve had significant damage in areas right across Queensland in the past two fire seasons,” Graham said.

“Fires on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast significantly impacted our customers, and the poles and wires that supply them with power, some for up to a week.

“If anyone sees a fire close to power poles or if they see a pole on fire, they should call 000.

“Just as concerning is a pole that is only partially burnt because it could be significantly weakened and fail at a later date, bringing down high-voltage wires.”

Graham also urged landholders to be aware of their surrounds and remain vigilant to keep themselves and their property safe while conducting any bushfire mitigation work.

“We’re asking property owners to trim or clear any long grass, foliage and rubbish within a 3m radius of their poles and closely monitor any controlled burns they carry out,” he said.

Contributed by Ken Barker There has been a lot of croquet played recently. On Tuesday, August 18 week we had a visit from Greg Bury and Francesca de Wytt from Windsor Club. Greg is coaching director with the Australian Croquet Association. He and Francesca played a game against Vince Carbery and Sarah Widin, which Vince and Sarah won 17–9.

Two lawns were used on Thursday August 20. Wallace Roy and Bev Sockhill played two games of golf croquet, which Wallace won 7–5, 7–3. They went on to play a game of association croquet, which Bev won 8-5. On lawn one Nick Cram and Sarah beat Kath Smith and Vince 22– 13. Ken Barker beat Donna Manning 26–20.

Bribie Beachcombers Caravan group visited on Saturday, August 22 to play Aussie croquet for an enjoyable two hours.

On Sunday, August 23 Helen Andrews and Sarah made 12 hoops to beat Janelle Wilson and Vince close behind, on 11.

On Thursday, August 27 two lawns were again in play. Gillian Bradley and Helen played Sally Adams and Bev two and a half games of golf croquet on lawn one. Scores favoured Gillian and Helen in the first two 7–5, 7–6 with the unfinished game drawn 2–2.

On lawn two Vince played a team consisting of Alice Spittle and Sarah and won 14–11; while Nick played Kath in a game of singles finishing ahead 17-10.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Friday, August 14: Whistlers played at Ballinger against the Breezers. It was a very warm day and no wind - a great day to be on the courts. There was a lot of running and nice shots.

It was great tennis and very close the whole way but we were only one game short. But surely we all enjoyed each other’s company. Score was 30-31 games, four sets all. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper.

The Wildcats were at home to Eumundi Echo. The team of Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Libby Howlett and Jenie Riding led from the start and didn’t look back. The final score was 5-3 sets, 42-27 games. It was great tennis weather.

Good tennis and company as usual, and we had a good day. Score was 48-18 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Maree Hooley, Annie Quarmby and Aki Lepper.

The Wildcats travelled to Mooloolaba to compete against the top team, the Mojitos. It was close all day with the wind a hindrance at times. In the end the Mojitos were too strong.

Final score was four sets each, 33-40 games. The team was Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Libby Howlett.

Wednesday, August 26: Witta Wagtails played a challenging game against Eumundi Miss Gems winning four sets each. It was an exciting day of tennis with excellent weather.

Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade July 2020

Making tracks on Stage 1 The Australian and Queensland governments are committed to improving the safety, efficiency and reliability of the North Coast Line.

The Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade (B2N) project will duplicate a section of track on the North Coast Line and deliver a range of other improvements.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will deliver the project in two stages, allowing construction of Stage 1 to start to provide immediate community benefits while investigating funding options for Stage 2.

The Australian and Queensland governments have committed $550.8 million towards Stage 1 of the B2N project, with $390 million of Australian Government funding and $160.8 million of Queensland Government funding.

TMR has started the tender process for Stage 1 and is on track to start early works in early 2021. Proposals are being sought from the construction industry to work with TMR to finalise the detailed design and commence major construction in mid-2022.

Key design features for Stage 1 • Duplication of the track between Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains on an improved alignment.

• Duplication of the track between Glass House Mountains and Beerwah within the existing corridor.

• Realignment of a one-kilometre section of Steve Irwin Way, between Nursery Road and Moffatt Road, to accommodate the new rail corridor and track infrastructure.

• Beerburrum Road and Steve Irwin Way intersection upgrade, including a new road overpass on Beerburrum Road.

• Expansion of the park ‘n’ ride facility on the northern side of Beerburrum station, adding around 200 parking spaces.

• Replacement of the Barrs Road level crossing in Glass House Mountains with a new road overpass connecting Barrs Road to Moffatt Road.

• Replacement of the Burgess Street road-over-rail bridge with a new road overpass.

• Construction of a new bus interchange at Landsborough station.

• New park ‘n’ ride facility on the eastern side of Landsborough station, adding around 300 parking spaces.

• Expansion of the park ‘n’ ride facility on the eastern side of Nambour station, adding around 50 parking spaces.

Environmental management Environmental management and conservation is one of TMR’s highest priorities.

The department has been liaising with key stakeholders and the Australian and Queensland governments to discuss environmental issues, share information and ensure legislative requirements are met and, where possible, exceeded.

Through this consultation, many aspects of environmental management will be considered.

TMR will continue to listen to and work with local environmental stakeholders to ensure best practice is achieved as part of all environmental initiatives.
