Hi Everyone Well if you have driven into Glass House Mountains last week you will have noticed the new entry statement at the entrance of the township.

From the non technical observer that I am – I am assuming that the ‘entry statement’ will be lit up as it currently seems to have wiring attached to it – and although that would probably have made for a better photo – we just had to have it on the front cover straight away.

Rosemary dropped into the shopping area of Glass House Mountains last Thursday afternoon and asked people what they thought – you can see their views in the story on page three.

Our other breaking news is that you won’t be seeing the name Kylie Wyer in GCNews story bi-lines until later this year, our dynamic News Editor is now officially on maternity leave.

With 10 days to go until her due date – Kylie has been hard at work until last Friday, we have been trying to not let her get too far away from the office in the last week or two.

The whole GCNews team will miss her while she is away – but we wish her all the best with her new bub and we look forward to having Sandra Conte filling in for Kylie until her return in October.

Reflections of Glass House

Its arrival may have been unannounced, but since its installation last week, Glass House’s new entry statement has certainly been the talk of the town.

The new $35,000 entry statement is the first of a series to be installed at townships along the Steve Irwin Way, including Beerwah, Beerburrum and Landsborough, over the next five years.

Divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz said she was very happy to see the sign installed, saying it is part of the planned streetscaping project for the township.

“The entry statement for the township of the Glass House Mountains is part of a project of mine and council’s to continue to create a sense of pride in the Glasshouse Country region,” she said.

“Our townships are all uniquely different and the entry signs are designed to be similar but slightly different.”

She said the Beerwah sign is currently being designed, although residents will have to wait until next year to see the end result.

Cr Grosskreutz said the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce had been briefed and agreed with the designs, and there had been extensive discussions with Main Roads to finalise the location.

“I hope the community like it, it is certainly more attractive than a metal sign on a couple of steel poles,” Cr Grosskreutz said.

According to a council spokesperson, the sign was designed to reflect the local geology of the area, and is reminiscent of our iconic Glass House Mountains.

We took the opportunity to ask some locals what they thought of the new structure.

Glass House Mountains local Amy Berndt said it was a good thing that there was something obvious for people to notice the turn off into Glass House.

“I’ve had a lot of people, when they haven’t been here before, drive into Beerwah. So that might be a bit of an indicator for them.”

Neville McDonald of Beerwah said he loves it.

“The only thing I can see wrong with it is that I don’t like the name sideways. It’s part of what they’re going to do here within the next month the beautification of the town. So I think that’s the start of it.”

Glass House’s Bettina Gardiner said she thought it was very attractive.

“It just suits Steve Irwin Way and it’s something that people will take notice of.”

Another Glass House Mountains local, Mark Scott, questioned council’s decision to spend so much money on one sign.

“I don’t mind it, but I think looking around the area there are better things to be done with that kind of money. I mean, there’s a serious lack of curbing and channelling around the place."

RACQ has launched its 2011 Unroadworthy Roads Survey, and locals are being encouraged to have their say in an effort to see some action.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has identified at least three roads in the division that he said should be placed high on the list of priorities for the Glasshouse region.

He said of greatest concern was the Sippy Creek Road, and its intersection with the Bruce Highway, which he said was a death trap.

“My office is regularly contacted by residents and workers at the animal refuge (on Sippy Creek Road) who take their life into their own hands every time they leave and enter the road,” Mr Powell said.

“While I am heartened by the fact that the state government is undertaking a planning study for future upgrades between the Caloundra and Sippy Downs interchanges on the highway, what we really need is a federal commitment to fund the upgrades,” he said.

Further up the highway, another major road of concern is the onramp to the Bruce Highway off Frizzo Road, outside Aussie World.

Glenview local Farley Cameron, who uses the onramp every day, said the dangerous state of the road was a hot topic amongst many local residents.

“I’ve seen too many misses on that section of road,” Farley said.

Frizzo Road on-ramp to highway “Not only do motorists who are unfamiliar with the road conditions not know how to properly merge with the oncoming highway traffic, there’s also those motorists travelling behind who block your vision when you are trying to safely merge,” she said.

She said as a mother of a teenager who will in a few years time be learning to drive, there was no way she would be exposing her to that section of road until she was much more experienced.

Aussie World general manager David Thompson agrees.

“The road network from the Caloundra roundabout to the Sunshine Motorway needs a total review and upgrade,” he said.

He said from a giveway sign to 100km per hour in a very short distance is unsafe.

Roys Road intersection with Bruce Highway He said while it was good news that the state government is funding the study (for upgrades to the Bruce Highway between the Caloundra and Sippy Downs interchanges), work needs to be done as a priority.

“We need to push to ensure this study (for the upgrade) is actioned immediately, not in the next five, 10 or 20 years,” he said.

Other roads of concern are the intersections of Bells Creek Road and Roys Road, where motorists are forced to play russian roulette to get across the highway, where motorists are travelling at 110km per hour.

Mr Powell said these were two other tragedies just waiting to happen.

“The devastating aspect is that the Federal Government has just recently announced that it has deferred funding for the upgrade of these two roads as part of reallocating funds from the flood levy,” he said.

Blackrobats participate in Dreamtime Peter Pan at the Powerhouse, Brisbane (RAF Recipient, 2010) Local artists and cultural groups have until March 14 to apply for a grant under the next round of Sunshine Coast Council’s Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) Program.

Council’s RADF program provides financial support to local residents and the community for a wide variety of arts and cultural projects.

Grants are available in six categories, from skills development, building cultural capacity or interest-free arts loans, and can cover up to 70 per cent of a project’s total costs.

Potential applicants can also give themselves the best chance of success by booking a meeting with council’s RADF Liaison Officer to work through their application.

Last year, the fund injected over $350,000 into regional Queensland communities, contributing a total project value of over $1.4 million to the state’s regional economy.

The Regional Arts Fund is an Australian Government initiative to support the arts in regional, remote and isolated Australia. The Fund is designed to operate as a long-term investment in these regions to support sustainable, community-related cultural development.

Queensland Arts Council promotes and manages the fund in Queensland on behalf of the Australian Government, providing support for communities through its extensive regional network.

Join the count with a Census job

The Australian Bureau of Statistics is looking for 43,000 people from every pocket of Australia to work on the 2011 Census of Population and Housing.

Across Australia more than 3,500 Area Supervisor jobs are now available.

Head of the Population Census program Paul Lowe says Area Supervisors are crucial to the success of the Census and ensuring that everyone in Australia is accurately counted.

“Area Supervisors make an enormous difference to the quality and accuracy of the data that we produce from the Census. The data has benefits for every state, every town and every community,” Mr Lowe says.

Mr Lowe says the ABS has increased the salaries of Area Supervisors in recognition of the fantastic work they do.

“These are rewarding part-time jobs that pay between $4,300 and $7,500 with the bonus of contributing to life in your community.”

Area Supervisors will be employed from April 18 - October 7.

A well attended AGM in February chaired by new BSH Principal Graham Trevenen elected Lisa as chairman, Graham Nicholson as treasurer, and Chris Bell as secretary. Fundraising conveners are Glenda McSwain, who is organising the Keith Inglis Memorial Chaplaincy Variety Concert. It will be held on Sunday, March 27, 2.00pm 4.00pm at the Beerwah Baptist Church (please mark your diaries and come along).

Allie Lovett is organising a fantastic Rock n Roll dance at Beerwah Hall on Saturday, May 14 (a great family fun night).

On June 26, Warwick Moody is the organiser of the Supa IGA Golf Day (hole sponsors and players

very welcome) and the Ride for Chappy on August 27 is organised by Lisa and Jaimie Kerr.

In September, Chaplaincy also benefits greatly from some of the proceeds from the Deb Ball run by the Anglican Church.

Chappy Mike Turner has planned an exciting year with Battle of the Bands (VGen World Vision), mentoring groups assisting students, dirt bike groups and camp, father / son camps along with the normal care and counselling work he does with the students.

To keep our BSH Chappy working five days a week at the school, ALL FUNDS have to be raised from fund raising events, sponsorships of businesses, churches and local people.

From the Schools Budding medical researcher receives new Indigenous scholarship A Glass House Mountains 17-year-old aiming to work in medical research has received the University of the Sunshine Coast’s first Jalarema Indigenous Scholarship.

Dylan Shaw this week started her Bachelor of Biomedical Science at the Sippy Downs campus after receiving the new 2011 undergraduate scholarship, worth $6,000 over three years.

It is awarded to an Indigenous student to recognise and encourage high academic endeavour, with preference for the fields of health care or teaching.

Dylan, who was Indigenous Student Council president at Beerwah State High School before she graduated last year, said she was excited to be attending USC. “I’ve always wanted to go to uni and USC has a good atmosphere, more laid-back than Brisbane,” she said.

“The scholarship will make it easier for me to support myself while studying. I’ve already bought a laptop and textbooks.”

Dylan discovered a love for science in high school.

“I got good marks in biology and at first I wanted to work in crime forensics but now I want to work in hospitals, doing clinical trials and research,” she said.

Dylan was among 67 students who gained scholarships, ranging in value from $3,500 to $12,000, at last week’s USC Undergraduate Scholarships Presentation Ceremony.

Master the multi-task!

The first day of term marks the beginning of many ends for Year 12 students across the state - the last first day of the school year, the last hunt for the wide variety of stationery requirements and the last stress-free day until graduation. Though the last one may sound exaggerated, it’s not a hidden fact that the last year of school is when everything is thrown at you at once, when multi-tasking becomes a fine art. While many of us are already struggling to see the academic pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, others are worrying about all important questions such as where can I find my perfect formal dress? Am I too pale to wear that colour? And of course, where will I find shoes to match?

Don’t give up just yet. Though we don't hold all the answers to these questions at the moment, be they major issues or minor formal ones, there’s only three more terms to go. Master the multi-task and don’t leave major research assignments until the night before and this year will be easy breezy, right? Fasten your seatbelts though, we may be in for a bumpy ride!

Crowd swells to 480 for College event When Glasshouse Country Christian

College held its Primary Leaders’ induction, the building bulged at its seams with 480 students, family members and teachers.

Head of Primary, Cheryl Bryers spoke to the leaders about their role, encouraging the students to have a heart for leadership, to care for the students and remember that true leadership involves service.

After the leaders made their public pledges in unison, family members were asked to come down and pin leadership badges on their child. A wave of proud parents and grandparents milled around, enjoying the moment.

Last month heralded the introduction of our extensive reading support program for Year 2 students. Through this program every child in Year 2 reads to or with an adult every day. We hope to extend this program into Years 1 and 3 but would need the support of parents and volunteers in the community.

The Queensland Government has extended the Queensland Ready Reader program by providing free reader training for parents and carers of Prep to Year 3 students to support their children’s literacy development. Parents and carers Haley, our volunteer mum reading will have the opportunity to learn ‘Diary of a Wombat’ with Olivia strategies which they can use at home to support their children’s reading. Strategies such as book selection and language development help build a child’s confidence, motivation, enjoyment and a strong foundation for successful reading in their life.

Registrations are now open for parents and carers to attend a two hour interactive workshop being held at Landsborough State School next week on Tuesday, March 8 from 9.00am - 11.00am, RSVP Friday, March 4. Please register at the school office.

Registrations have also opened for volunteers to take part in the Queensland Ready Readers program to read with children in classrooms across the state. The program is part of the education green paper, ‘A Flying Start for Queensland Children’ and has been developed based on national and international research that has proven that well-trained and supported community volunteers can make a big difference to children's learning.

All volunteers will be trained in the Support-A-Reader process and will be required to go through the standard checks for working with children. The eight hour Ready Reader training course will be held over two half days at Landsborough State School on Thursday, March 31 and Friday, April 1 from 9.00am - 1.00pm. RSVP Monday, March 28.

A new name for an old friend

Life never stands still, and neither does the field of retirement living, either aged care or retirement villages. Last year, we changed our company name from Aged Care Service Group to Embracia, a name that we felt better reflected us and our values. On February 21, the Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains held a new membership night.

This was a great night with good fellowship.

President George gave an overall view of Rotary and what it means to be a Rotarian. This was followed by international service director Trevor Taylor who spoke about work in Gizo, in the Solomon Islands. This included building medical clinics, schools and installing water tanks.

John Kemp, vocational and youth director, gave a presentation on RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) program. This involves Year 11 students with presenters from police, insurance, people who have survived car accidents, and a hands-on display for stopping distances. This is

Lyn Bidwell, who has been the booking officer of the Landsborough School of Arts Hall for some years, is retiring from that position at the annual general meeting to be held at 7.00pm on Thursday, March 3 at the hall.

Lyn has devoted a lot of time and effort to managing the hall bookings over that period of time. At the last meeting on February 10, the Chairman Peter Pollock thanked her for her contribution.

The hall is managed by volunteers who do some of the smaller maintenance tasks. However, due to the age of the hall, there are a large number of bigger issues facing the committee in the coming year.

Community service director, Bob McLean, spoke about the Glass House Country Festival coming up in May, our involvement with cystic fibrosis and the Men’s Shed. These are all Rotary projects and keep Bob rather busy.

Wally Breton, who was a visitor on the night, also spoke about the furniture and any household gear being collected at Peachester for the flood victims of the Lockyer Valley. There is a dedicated little band of workers in the Peachester area who are not only collecting gear but taking it over to the victims at their own expense. Well done to all concerned. I would like to thank our guests for coming along and hope you enjoyed the night.

A recent interim building report has identified that not only does the floor need replacing, but it will be necessary to re-stump the hall before that is done.

Prior to that there are a few structural issues to be dealt with and once the final report is received, tenders will be called for some of the work. It is anticipated that grants will need to be obtained in addition to funds presently being raised by the committee from hall hire and from the Markets held every Saturday.

A small band of volunteer committee members presently look after the hall. They are asking anyone interested in seeing a community hall remain in Landsborough to attend the AGM on March 3 at 7.00pm and join the committee. A CAPTAIN is a leader

The further widening of the Bruce Highway north of Caboolture to three lanes each way is a project that I have raised with the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport several times in the past, again last month and again more recently after the Government announced funding cuts of $86 million to planned road works between Caboolture and Caloundra, to help pay for flood damage.

I also spoke in the Australian Parliament on the issue recently, where I noted that while securing funds for repairs of flood damage is important, it was also vital that the major road from Brisbane north was not neglected and was as effective, efficient and safe as it could be. This is becoming more important by the day as the Sunshine Coast population continues to grow and the number of people who commute to work in Brisbane also increases.

In my speech and in a letter to the minister, I advised that the highway was vital for commuters, truckies, tourists and retirees and therefore vital to our economy.

Ships have them, sporting teams have them – and schools have them too.

In each case the responsibility is the same. Captains are leaders and they lead by example.

The role of captaincy is not bestowed lightly nor is it likely to be forgotten in the recipient’s lifetime.

All over the Sunshine Coast school captains and leaders have been appointed at the start of the new school term.

It’s an honour and my congratulations go to each and every one of them.

These fine young people now have a role to play. They have a responsibility to uphold their own good behaviour and a responsibility to strive hard academically as an example to their schoolmates.

Captains and leaders also have a responsibility to see fair play in action – to look out for bullying and other anti-social activities which young people can easily fall into both inside and outside the classroom.

It is a position to be taken seriously and once the mantel of responsibility is accepted, the lessons learned will be a very good grounding for life in the workforce.

All our students of today are our community citizens of the future.

Being a captain or a leader is a great personal start to the future outside school for the individual but it also carries the onus of helping fellow students to achieve their potential. I have no doubt the school leaders of 2011 are up to the task.

I offer my congratulations to the new captains and leaders, their families and the teachers who helped nurture them to this achievement.

Peachester History Committee

Deluge

The 1893 floods will feature at a Film Evening hosted by the Peachester History Committee at Peachester Hall on Friday, March 11.

The film is “Deluge: The true story of the Great Brisbane Flood of 1893”, produced

by Crystal Pictures in 1999, and filmed on location in south-east Queensland.

Starting time is 7.30pm; there will also be a cartoon and newsreels; and the program will be followed by supper – adults $5.00, children free.

Caboonbah Homestead near Toogoolawah (sadly, destroyed by fire in 2009) plays a key role in the film. Built in 1889 for grazier Henry Somerset, the house was situated on the high bank at the junction of the Brisbane and Stanley Rivers. It was from this vantage point in February 1893 that Somerset observed the rapidly rising flood waters, and realised the danger to surrounding districts and ultimately to Brisbane.

Almost 36 inches of rain had fallen in the Blackall Ranges at the source of the Stanley. On February 2,1893 at Crohamhurst, Inigo Jones had measured the record rainfall for Australia which still stands, 35.71 inches (907mm) in 24 hours.

Seeing the river level rising quickly at Caboonbah, Somerset sent a messenger on horseback to Esk to telegraph Brisbane. Two weeks later the Brisbane River rose again, and finding the Esk telegraph line down, Somerset rowed across the flooded Brisbane River, two horses swimming in tow, to send a rider across the d'Aguilar Range to Caboolture.

As a result of Somerset's efforts, Caboonbah was later made Queensland's first flood warning station.

Henry Somerset was also the first to suggest the site of the present Somerset Dam, which was built in the 1930-40s and named in his honour.

'Deluge' sets out to bring the dramatic events of 1893 to life, highlighting the heroic efforts of Henry Somerset and stockman Billy Mateer as they endeavoured to get a warning to Brisbane about the flood waters heading for the city. Caboonbah is the setting for much of the action, and the story is narrated by the late Ray Barrett.

Always here to help

In response to ‘Flooding response prompts questions’, GCNews February 16, the Glasshouse SES Group has been providing services to our community for many years. During the recent heavy rains and flood periods, members were kept extremely busy for three days responding to requests for assistance. These requests are relayed to us in response to calls made to the State 132 500 emergency contact call centre.

We responded to many locations to provide assistance in roof tarping, sandbagging, blocked drains, fallen trees and storm water runoff.

On several days Caloundra and Kawana crews assisted in meeting the calls for assistance in the Glasshouse district. In some instances assistance could not be provided as access roads were flooded, but in all instances an effort was made to provide assistance. When this assistance could not be provided, attempts were made to contact the families involved to advise of the circumstances.

The state 132 500 call centre received astronomical numbers of calls during this period and delays referred to were to be expected.

What is not acceptable are the few calls that obviously dropped through the cracks in the 132 500 system and possibly a few members of our community were not provided with assistance as requested. Our members are very concerned that this may have occurred recently and as a result have decided that in the future should such serious delays arise, we should be contacted direct. The shed telephone number in Beerwah Parade (when attended during emergency periods) is 5494 6055 and the 24 hour call officer’s number is 0428 710 711. This does not mean that we should be the first point of contact as that should always be the State 132 500 number.

I would like to thank my members for their outstanding efforts during this recent very busy period and trust that community members will not abuse the telephone numbers offered above.

The Mooloolah Mob

Yes, we’re still walking and would love you to join us. This group has now been walking for over five years and for some of us that’s well over 3000km covered. We walk each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.30am for about an hour. We meet at Martin Rungert Park, right in the centre of town, and walk a variety of routes about the local area.

It’s a great way to start the day and to meet new friends. This is a Heart Foundation group activity.

The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains will be conducting their annual Rotary Bowel Scan testing campaign from March 1 - 31. Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

Many, many, many, years ago while I was in the boy scouts we were sent on a bush walk through the Blue Mountains near Sydney.

We weren’t sure where we were going, nor did we really want to walk over the mountains but our troop leader made us go. It’s only a few hours he said to us.

The few hours turned into 48 hours as the police rescue squad came to rescue us.

What had happened is along the walk we came to a fork in the road. One path was wide and straight and downhill. The other path was a mere goat track that led further up the hill. Besides it seemed as if it was going in the other direction. So we took what seemed to be the easiest road because it also felt like the right road.

We followed the easy path down. We started to jump down a few rocks until we got stuck on a cliff, overlooking our destination. It was one cold night in the Blue Mountains and it’s even more embarrassing having to be rescued.

The bible often talks about the paths in life we can take, and it often presents us with two paths we can choose. One path is the path of wisdom; the other path is the path it calls foolish.

The foolish path is likened to a peer group or an alluring woman speaking pleasant and enticing

That’s where God come into the picture, but the Bible says that wisdom comes from God - so it make sense to ask God which path is the right path.

The bible is also smart enough to know that there will be many voices all claiming to be God’s voice - wisdom is being smart enough to discern God’s voice over the rest.

How do we know where to hear God’s voice? Jesus said that if we hear him then we hear the Father.

The issue is, are we wise enough to hear God’s voice and go down God’s path?

Things 2 Do Noel Loves Barbershop Noel Drake joined the Sunshine Statesmen last April, helped form the ‘Forecasts’, one of 14 scratch quartets, and then won the Christmas The Forecasts in Harmony competition. All in just seven months!

Noel claims to have always loved music and harmony.

“It’s totally different from instrument-accompanied singing,” he said.

“Now the singing is the music.”

Noel explained that he was introduced to unaccompanied harmony at last year’s voice-coaching program.

“When I learned how to harmonise and project my voice I noticed an improvement in my singing. I love it!’

Rose Carleo laughs at the title of her new album, ‘Life Gets in the Way’, because it has been that life – with its many highs and lows, joys and sorrows – that’s made her such a perceptive songwriter.

2011 Woodford Rodeo March 5 will see the professional cowboys and cowgirls descend on Woodford for the Australian Professional Rodeo Association Rodeo. Wanted – dead or … well just wanted dead Sunshine Coast Council is calling on local community groups and residents to join the ‘Pest Patrol Posse’ and help to round up a pesky varmint known as the cane toad.

It’s a big task, with the Council’s aim of at taking out 10,000 cane toads starting on March 18 and continuing until the last toad is done and dusted.

A large posse will be needed to pick up and bag the wanted environmental vandals. Humanely treating the captured critters is an absolute must. Clubbing them, stabbing them, running them over or spraying them with Dettol are all considered to be cruel, painful and inhumane by the RSPCA. Residents are also asked to make sure they can tell a toad from a frog, as some local native frogs can look very similar.

How to humanely kill a toad

Humanely treating the captured critters is a must, with the preferred techniques being: 1. Bagging them, putting them in the fridge to render them unconscious and then into the deep freeze for at least 24 hours.

2. Alternatively, put a drop of clove bud oil onto them to anaesthetise them before then putting the sleeping toad into the freezer.

3. Spray them with a commercial product called ‘HopStop’ – which is an approved aerosol spray that puts them to sleep and then kills them humanely and quickly.

Available through hardware stores, each can costs around $20.00 and – if used correctly – is safe for people, pets and the environment.

Preparing your property for the winter chill using recycled resources Mulch is available from all of Sunshine Coast Councils sites. At the Beerwah site mulch is loaded from 2.00pm - 4.00pm every Wednesday and Saturday and 8.00am - 10.00am every Wednesday and Saturday at the Witta site. You are required to cover the mulch to transport it home (covers can be an old carpet square shade cloth and some customers use a door tied down to stop any product from flying off. You can load yourself any day if you want it earlier.

A reader from the Glass House Mountains said recently that ‘due to being away and unable to prepare the garden with mulch before we went, I now have weeds everywhere. The mulch not only helped to keep the ground moist, but it kept the weeds at bay. We now have a big job ahead of us to clean it up’.

With the winter winds expected in the next three months this is a good time to start and prepare your garden with a thick layer of mulch spread over the garden (best done every six months) to aid with the weeds and to keep the soil moist.

Over the past year we have shared several innovative ways to use general items you would find around the home and shed in the garden like bed frames as arches / climbing frames; sinks as potting stands, bath tubs and screen doors as worm farms; interesting kitchen and shed items as garden ornaments and bunk beds as green house stands.

We are always excited to hear successful stories from customers who have taken up the challenge to use recycled resources in and around the home, like Paul from Beerwah Print and Stationary who purchased a long glass tube from the Witta site and turned it into a garden feature lit up at night by a solar light, and Keith from the Eco Lodge, who has turned his garden into rooms that have an environmental message he shares with visitors.

We have a large quantity of fish tanks for sale, other ways to use fish tanks are: containers for pet snakes, spiders, rats and the obvious fish.

Some plants grow well in terrariums or you could make a Japanese garden. Many sizes are still available.

Timber is available for sale at any time; you can fill your trailer (6x4) for $10.00. Why not fill your trailer full of fire wood and have it stored, ready for the winter fire?

While many borrowers may mistakenly believe that the standard variable rate was similar to the RBA’s cash rate, this is far from the truth.

Each lender sets its own individual standard variable rate, this is not an industry wide measure, and it’s largely just a marketing tool.

The standard variable rate is very much the bank’s ‘premium’ rate and while it may be the most appropriate rate for some borrowers,

many of that bank’s home loan products are often available at a rate that is significantly below this.

However, just what rate you end up paying can be determined by a number of factors.

Generally speaking, the more you borrow, the more scope you have to secure a lower rate.

A loan of in excess of $150,000 will attract some form of discount, with many of the better rates available on loans of $250,000-plus.

Those looking for a ‘no frills’

product may be best off with what is known as a basic loan.

This generally comes with a lower interest rate with no or low monthly fees attached.

In comparison, professional packages are a way of combining a loan with other bank products such as an offset account or credit card.

They offer the extra benefit of discounted interest rates and lower fees but generally have an annual fee attached.

The 2011 Campaign for the Beerwah Bulldogs Junior Grades began at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday as we took on Toowoomba Club Highfield Eagles in our Annual Challenge.

As always, the Eagles were a very well drilled and coached club and they produced the same on Saturday by Winning five of the six games and reclaiming the Trophy.

The Bulldogs also showed that they will be competitive in their age groups on the Sunshine Coast in season 2011 as this was their first game after only a week or two training together.

Also pleasing was the large crowd they came along to support the club and we are hoping for much of the same throughout the season.

The season kicks off for most of the Junior teams the weekend after next so please keep an eye out on the website for upcoming games at http:// beerwahbulldogs.leaguenet.com.au The Senior teams have trials planned against Caboolture at Beerwah on Saturday, March 19 which will give us a good indication of how the boys are shaping up for the season.

Members began preparations for their upcoming unofficial jump day this weekend. Riders made short work setting up the courses before having the opportunity to practice and refine their jumping. The Unofficial Jump Day will be held on March 12 and will provide the opportunity for everyone and anyone to come along and enjoy the experience of jumping competitively. With three arenas being set and heights from 10cm – 110cm, all levels will be catered for. Courtney Sinclair last week competed at the Nambour Grand Show Jumping weekend, placing first in the 50cm class. Sasha Norton competed on the weekend at Redcliff Dressage placing 2nd overall.

Friday Night Tennis – The first matches for Friday night tennis have been played and I hope everyone enjoyed their first match for the season.

Let’s hope the rain is not going to affect too many Friday nights for this season. If you are playing at Glasshouse remember at the end of the night to turn off the lights, lockup the courts and return the box and the keys to the sports club. Do not take the box home with you.

Remember to enjoy your match, be the ball boys / girls for your matches, learn how to score, encourage each other, and also congratulate and shake hands with the other team no matter who won the game. Just a few tips to make the season a great one. Enjoy yourselves and scores

will be coming up in the next couple of weeks, so keep a lookout for them.

Club News - For the Ladies, if you would like to play some social tennis and have a morning out, tennis starts at approximately 8.00am and finishes around 12.00noon every Tuesday.

On Wednesday night there is a mixed social tennis which starts at approximately 7.00pm and finishes around 9.00pm. The club would welcome any new players, beginners or experienced. If you are interested in the above or would like any information on any other tennis activities you can contact Dawn on 5494 1085.

Court hire during the daytime can be done through the Landsborough IGA and for night hire please contact Dawn.

Social bowls on Wednesday resulted in John McSwain winning over Nev Woolley and Jan Lawson over Joan Wilson in the triples games.

In the pairs, Jenny Hobson and Marleen Bertram won over Noelle Dean and Kate White.

Wednesday night saw the Glasshouse Country Coaches team, ‘The Coachmen’ winning on 99 points from the Coochin Creek Co-op team, the ‘Triple C’s’, who won the runners-up on a tie break ‘draw of the card’ from the ‘Blue Lions’ and ‘The Kemps’ all on 88 points in the third round of the Business Bowls Competition.

Thursday morning’s game of ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Kate White and Kerry Capern with 2 wins plus 50 points. The runners-up were Peter Lawson and Robbie Dean with the highest score of 26 points in the first game. The afternoon game was won Brian Saunders and Graham Turton with 2 wins and 56 points, and the runners-up were Eric Cole and Peter Wesson with the highest score of 32 points in game one.

AFL Masters Carnival Board meets on Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast will be home for more than 42 teams of AFL Master footballers in October.

The AFL Masters National Carnival is held annually and rotated on a state by state basis.

Since the inaugural national carnival in 1983, Queensland has played host to this event on several occasions in Brisbane, Cairns, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

It’s our turn again, the Sunshine Coast last hosted the Carnival in 2006.

The Masters Carnival has grown from a small event with two teams to the largest football event in Australia and Sunshine Coast Council is proud to offer the upgraded Maroochy Multi Sports Complex as the host venue for the 2011event.

On Saturday 26 February, the Board of the AFL Masters will meet on the Sunshine Coast and will later inspect the carnival venue.

This is one event where age has no barriers. For eight days, footballers aged 35 to over 55 will kick it up at the Maroochy Multi Sports Complex.

Together with their families they’ll enjoy the lifestyle that the region has to offer including that offered in the immediate Maroochydore vicinity.

The event attracts 1500 participants, families and officials and is a great economic boost for the region.

Lessons for Beginners to Advanced

Meals are now available at the Club from 6.00pm on Friday nights together with Barefoot Bowls. New players are welcome for a roll-up with family and friends. Bowls are provided by the Club and you will be given help and advice from Club members.

Our Quarterly Meeting was held on Saturday morning and members were provided an update on the progress of the Club since the AGM last November. It is encouraging to note that player numbers are up for the year to date and we have attracted six new members and a Junior over that period.

Round 4 of Super Challenge on Saturday resulted in our Bronze Section 15 team going down to Brighton. In Section 13, our Men’s team defeated Kalangur, 3 rinks to 2, and our Ladies beat Kalangur on points after an extra end, following a one rink win each.

Friday 3 bowl pairs winners were Darren Black and John Esdaile, 2nd Chrissy Selby-Adams and Roscoe Duncan, and 3rd Rosemay Roderick and Yorkie Manston. Darren had visited the Alex Hair Design Salon and sported a special cut that only Alex could achieve. It seemed to match our Green. Very artistic!

Saturday winners were Judy Walker and Ray Bryant. This was such a shock to Ray that he ended up in Hospital that night. Hope you recover soon Ray. The Raffle winner was Lorraine Schultz.

On Sunday we had a lovely visit from Allora Gardens at Maroochydore. We had 42 players on the green and it sounded like everyone had a good time. The winners were Eileen Pierce, Maureen Sacco, Sylvia Harder, Rick Humphries, Judy Walker and Ian Wright. There were lots of Raffle and Money Board winners. Many thanks to Heather for bringing her Club along.

Our next 2 bowl Triples is on March 14 with morning tea at 9.30 am. Names with Ede on 5494 7047.
