25 years and still running

If you added up all the kilometres that Ian Javes has run in his life, it’s more than likely that he’s run around the world (and maybe back again).

You see, Ian is a committed long distance trail runner and for the last 25 years has been the driving force behind Glasshouse Trail Runs – a non-for-profit off-road trail running organisation which puts on runs through and around the Glass House Mountains.

He ran in the 1988 Sydney to Melbourne Ultra-Marathon and has competed in many long distance events here and overseas – including a 2092 kilometre event in New York, where Ian came second.

His first Glasshouse Trail Run was in 1990, and in 1996 added the 100 mile event into the mix.

Unfortunately, all five runners who braved that gruelling distance, failed to finish. But the next year two runners did finish – one being known local character and custard apple farmer, Bill Thompson (Bill has gone on to complete twelve 100 mile runs).

The internationally recognised Glasshouse 100 has grown to now cater for over 300 entrants in total competing in 100 miles, 100kms, 50kms, 30kms and 10km races.

Matthew Flinders Tribute Saturday, July 19 marks 200 years since the death of Matthew Flinders and the Volunteers of the Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Information Centre (VIC) will be celebrating the contribution that he made to Australia’s history.

He was the first person to systematically use the name Australia when compiling his journal, ‘A Voyage To Terra Australis’. He was also the first person to circumnavigate Australia and the first European visitor to our region of the Glass House Mountains.

In recognition of the role he played in our local history the volunteers are inviting the local community to the unveiling of their two new wall mounted interpretive panels at 10.00am on Saturday, July 19.

The Glass House Mountains VIC is a modern centre staffed by local volunteers who provide information and guidance on historical, geological and other tourist attractions to the many

thousands of international and Australian tourists who visit us each year.

Many visitors to the area are interested in the European influence of James Cook, and more importantly Matthew Flinders in 1770 and 1799 respectively.

The new panels have been designed by VIC volunteers and were paid for with money from Regional Arts Development Fund and Sunshine Coast Council.

The Glass House Mountains, including Mt Beerburrum, was climbed by Flinders and his party, and were given National Heritage listing by the then Prime Minister, John Howard when visiting our township on August 3, 2006.

Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, last week congratulated Maleny Cheese and Mr Clem O’Mara from Glass House Mountains for being named regional finalists in the Queensland Training Awards.

Mr Powell said the Queensland Training Awards See page 41 for Denise recognised the state’s top apprentices, trainees, Pinwill's column trainers and employers in eight categories.

Mountain peaks to reopen As part of a new $750,000 project – the Glass House Mountains Outdoor Recreation Initiative – recently announced

by National Parks and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson, locals and visitors alike will soon be able to legally climb Mt Beerwah and Mt Tibrogargan once more.

According to Minister Dickson, people will also have access to improved rock-climbing facilities and increased walking, cycling, horse riding and canoeing networks.

“From now until mid-2015, our focus is on reopening the routes to the peaks of Mt Beerwah and Mt Tibrogargan and investing in relevant safety signage to highlight the risks,” Mr Dickson said.

In addition, the two year project will develop recreation hubs and link walking, cycling and multi-use trails around the towns of Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Landsborough and Mooloolah.

“In the first year (2014-15) $400,000 has been allocated for the projects. An additional $350,000 has been allocated for works in 201516.

“This is about encouraging people to get out there and explore this wonderful part of the Sunshine Coast, and boost tourism to the region,” said Mr Dickson.

Part of the project will be to upgrade the existing trail, informally known as the Soldier Settlers track, at Beerburrum.

Mt Tibrogargan Local group, the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN), commends the Minister on the announcement of future projects to enhance the tourism potential of the Glass House Mountains and surrounding area.

“Both GMAN and the Trail Running Association of Qld (TRAQ) have worked consistently over many years, and with all levels of Government and political parties, to improve recognition and appropriate usage of our iconic area,” said Gwen Malcolm, acting GMAN President.

“The Glass House Mountains National Parks have in recent years suffered damage from inappropriate usage and our ultimate aim has been to reverse this degradation by improving visitor and community use of walking / cycle track linkages throughout the mountains.

“Both GMAN and TRAQ have recently contributed to the cost of a bridge on the Soldier Settlers track linking Beerburrum to the Trachyte Circuit.

“Support for Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) in the form of interpretive signage along this route will be ongoing,” said Gwen.

Mr Dickson said QPWS will also be working with TRAQ to establish more trail runs through the area.

“We’ll be providing facilities for trail running by working to formalise a running network in an area known as The Basin near Woodford, to complement the existing horse trail network in that area,” he said.

GMAN is pleased that the Glass House Mountains are now being recognised by the government for their historical, cultural and scenic value.

“We hope to continue a working relationship with TRAQ and QPWS to establish a greater appreciation of the ecological qualities of our area and the greater region,” said Gwen.

“We look forward to hearing in further detail what is planned for this area.”

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the Glass House Mountains were a state and national treasure, with important geological, cultural, historical and natural values.

“This initiative is a strong plan that will boost recreation and nature-based tourism, create more opportunities for people to enjoy the area’s beauty and ensure a bright future for the region,” he said.

“After the initial phase we’ll also be constructing new visitor facilities at Mt Tibrogargan and Mt Beerwah, better linkages between the peaks and local accommodation, and further expansion of trail networks.”

Beerwah comes of age With the more than $4 million Simpson Street refurbishment almost complete, the central shopping area has been transformed into a more user friendly and aesthetically pleasing environment.

Wider footpaths, extensive landscaping, improved outdoor dining spaces, new pedestrian crossings, new underground power, new street lighting, new road kerbing and roadworks have transformed the main street.

As reported in last week’s paper, the innovative public art has been installed and is already creating considerable interest. Council hopes that the public art will become a talking point for locals and a drawcard for tourists.

When combined with the redevelopment of the Beerwah Marketplace, some would say that the town centre is finally coming of age.

Now the main beautification works are all but finished, the next phase on council’s agenda is to regenerate the public use spaces – particularly the large zones on the railway side opposite Suncorp Bank.

After extensive consultation with Queensland Rail, Council has been able to create a significant area of community parkland, which will now extend from the carpark to the CWA Hall.

The new open greenspace – to be known as Beerwah Tower Green – will be developed for the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike.

Council have plans to create an iconic landmark, symbolising the optimistic and prosperous future envisioned for Beerwah.

The space will reference elements of Beerwah’s local geography and history as well as its flora and fauna.

Giving the name to the park – Beerwah Tower Green – will be a number of butterfly towers.

These timber structures, a reference to Beerwah’s Indigenous, forestry and agricultural histories, will, in time, be covered with Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vines and will be softly lit at night to be visible from the road and the railway.

Subtly incorporated into each of the legs of the Butterfly Towers will be a donations box which will collect funds for the Wildlife Warriors.

Council envisage that sound speakers within the towers will give an acoustic experience depicting the sounds of various endangered animals together with wildlife soundscapes.

The new parkland will feature soft, undulating grassed areas interspersed with the Butterfly Towers and nine ‘Rock Sentinels’.

These Rock Sentinels will be made from lightly sculpted carefully selected local stone and placed to give reference the Glass House Mountains of Tunbubudla (The Twins), Beerburrum, Tibberoowuccum, Tibrogargan, Mt Cooee, Ngungun, Coonowrin (Crookneck), Beerwah and Coochin.

The existing Mango Tree (next to the CWA Hall) will be lightly pruned underneath the canopy and retained to provide shade and a picnic area.

To celebrate the achievements, a large-scale community event is being scheduled for October where locals and visitors will be invited to celebrate the ‘new look Beerwah’ and come and see the results for themselves.

Division 1 Councillor, Rick Baberowski is proud of the outcomes achieved.

“I would like to thank every member of the

local business and Beerwah community for your patience,” he said.

“It is always a challenge to undertake construction in an operational business precinct but the new streetscape, complete with the removal of those ugly overhead power lines and poles, looks fantastic.

“The streetscape improvements combined with the upcoming major event and new businesses in town are well and truly putting Beerwah ‘back on the map’ and positioning it well for a future of growth and prosperity.

“We’re nearly there and I’m proud of our community’s achievement in this pivotal project,” Rick said.

Gold Coast College goes Solar

Construction of a 100 kilowatt solar system at Emmanuel College in Carrara on the Gold Coast, QLD has begun.

The system was designed and is being installed by A&K Lievesley Electrical and Solar Director Tony Lievesley. The system includes 400 REC 250 watt peak energy series panels and 7 SMA inverters.

Mr Lievesley expects annual production of 164,359 kilowatts and an estimated 46 per cent reduction in daily energy use.

Commerical businesses are seeing the benefits of installing larger scale solar systems. “More affordable production with less electricity costs is making industries more competitive, especially when commercial solar finances packages are available,” said Mr Lievesley. According to A&K Lievesley, the SMA inverters were chosen for their web based monitoring, which will allow Emmanuel College staff and students to view real time electricity as it’s generated, as well as allowing for the analysis of the data produced.

Contributed by Kylie Merola In the early hours of Sunday, June 22, Landsborough State School students, Liam and Drew Ketley, participated in the MS Brissie to the Bay Bike ride.

This annual event attracts over 5,000 participants and aims to raise funds to fight multiple sclerosis. Liam rode in the 10km event and Drew in the 50km event. Drew was in a team that were the top fundraisers, raising over $120,000 for MS. Drew himself raised $410.00 which was a fantastic individual effort.

The Ketleys make this event very much a family affair. Riding alongside Liam and Drew was their mum, grandma, aunty and uncle all showing their support for people with multiple sclerosis.

Across Australia, TV frequencies are being changed to free up airwave space for new services such as mobile broadband.

This means that in our Glasshouse Country areas, you will need to retune your digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder to find the channels that have moved.

Retuning is done using the remote.

Start by pressing the ‘menu’ button on your remote then looking for the ‘set-up’ options.

Then select words like ‘channels’ or ‘auto-tuning’ and follow the prompts. A scanning bar may appear so when the scan finishes, you should be able to receive all the digital TV channels.

If you’re not sure or are having problems, contact

one of our local TV antenna companies (you’ll find them listed in the GCNews Trades and Services pages) and they’ll be able to help.

For this area, the federal Department of Communications says that the retune date is July 17. They are also saying that there will be some outages and disruptions to TV transmissions on the days before and after the retune, due to work being conducted at the transmission tower site.

Unfortunately for those with poor reception, it won’t mean better pictures, as the retune simply moves some free-to-air TV channels to a new location on the broadcast spectrum and is unlikely to change TV reception or coverage.

Community News Kids supporting a good cause

Recently GCNews bought you a story about Angie Schultz of Glass House Mountains who is participating in the walk to end women’s cancers in Brisbane later in the year.

Angie’s sister-in-law Carla Schultz is the Centre Director at Goodstart Early Learning Centre and she recently recruited the centre’s children and families to get behind Angie’s fundraising with a sweet treat morning tea stall.

Angie said the children were very pleased they were able to come into the office and purchase their treats.

“We were able to sell $221.00 worth of goodies to our families, children and staff. We discussed with the children about why we were having the stall and that we were raising money for a good cause. The children presented Angie with the takings for the day.

Angie is still looking for sponsors for her teams t-shirts, any donations over $150.00 will gain a place on their shirts.

Photography winners announced

Judging for the Rotary Photographic competition has recently taken place with 10 local photographers entries being chosen by the judges. They are images by Annette Pendlebury, Danny Ketley, Roz Bannen, Ruben Starkovsky, Ilia Starkovsky, Greame Lean, Tracy Macle, David Carew, Elizabeth Slore and Ron Gillinder.

Their images will be included in the Rotary Calendar for 2015 which will be available for purchase later in the year.

The winner of the People’s choice category was won by Pat Warren from Mooloolah and the photo will appear on the front cover of the calendar.

If you haven’t had a chance to go and see the photography exhibition, the winner’s photos will be on display at the Beerwah Library until July 11.

Community digs deep for foster kids

Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has praised the local community for digging deep and generously donating to the Pyjama Foundation’s annual PJ Drive.

The drive, held from June - July each year, aims to collect cash donations and new pairs of pyjamas to help children who suddenly find themselves in foster care.

Mr McArdle’s Caloundra office is a donation point, and so far more than 150 pairs have been donated to the office directly.

Currimundi State School (pictured) have also backed the cause, raising an impressive $500.00 from a disco night and donating a further 142 pairs.

For the year ending December 2013 there were 1,098 children living in foster care in the North Coast region, and 8,556 for the whole of Queensland.

Last year more than 5,000 pairs were donated nationally.

Mr McArdle will officially hand over all pairs of pyjamas to the Pyjama Foundation once the drive ends, on August 1.

German travel agents visit Super strawberry time It's time for farmers and gardeners to start looking Glass House Mountains for the next Super Strawberry. The 2014 Super Don’t be surprised if you start to notice more Germans visiting our special part of the world after a group of 22 travel agents from Germany’s largest travel wholesalers, The Dertours Group, recently enjoyed an overnight stay at the Eco Lodge in Glass House Mountains.

The group were on a familiarisation tour of South East Queensland's Sunshine Coast, led by Adriana Fischer from Tourism and Events Queensland and Christina Grote, Dertours Operations Manager from Frankfurt.

Ecolodge Manager Robyn said they loved our ‘Australian sausages’ as well as the pavlova and enjoyed dining in their vintage train carriage dining car.

The group were impressed with the fact that visitors to the area can surf in the morning, and then visit Hinterland villages and bushwalk through the Heritage listed Glass House Mountains in the afternoon.

Strawberry Competition is starting this week – entries in Round 1 are due at Coochin Creek Co-op by Friday, July 4 at 4.00pm.

This novelty event runs each year leading up to the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival.

We have seen some strong competition and amazing entries over the years, like the 1997 champion shown in the photo (grown by Cameron and Mary Lister), which weighed 240 grams.

The group is offering residents the opportunity to have tamperproof screws fitted to their number plates. This will help in the reduction of number plate thefts in the area. This simple step helps not only to reduce the theft of number plates, but also reduces the incidence of flow on

offences, where false number plates are used.

These offences can include petrol drive offs, break and enters and armed robberies.

Peachester Beerwah RSL has offered the use of their car park in Beerwah Parade for the event. To have tamperproof screws fitted to your number plates, free of charge, come along to the Beerwah RSL on Saturday, July 19 between 9.30am and 11.30am.

With the clatter of teacups and the chatter of friends, Beerburrum Innovation Group hosted an Australian Biggest Morning tea in aid of cancer research.

The charming verandah home in leafy Beerburrum was the venue and received guests from the neighbourhood and surrounding areas. They ate delightful goodies and sipped tea from vintage cups while listening to the enchanting music of young harpist Selah Dimech, and raised $218.00 for QLD Cancer Council.

Changes to Meals on Wheels

If you have never had to rely on the Meals on Wheels service for yourself or a family member, you may not know how it works or how to go about organising it.

For the past few years, Glasshouse Country Care has coordinated our local Meals on Wheels service, however recently they have made some changes to how the service operates, and the flexibility available to clients.

These days they employ and supervise the delivery driver, the lovely Emma who delivers nutritious tasty meals on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week.

Emma’s work is scheduled so that everyone receives their delivery by 12.30pm on the delivery days.

The daily delivery is made up of a main meal, a soup, dessert, yogurt and piece of fruit and is priced at $7.50. The cost is subsidised by government funding so there is criteria to be met to be able to access the service.

People use the service for many reasons.

They may be in their senior years, recovering after hospitalisation, a major illness or surgery, a person with a disability, a carer, or needing assistance due to a special circumstance.

From July, Glasshouse Country Care are also creating monthly menus, so that each day clients have a choice between three separate main meal

For example on the first week of the schedule on offer on a Monday is roast of the day – lamb / pork, main meal salad, or sweet and sour chicken. Wednesday is cottage pie, corned beef or quiche, and Friday is roast of the day beef / lamb, fish and veggies or spaghetti bolognese.

Each week the clients will be able to put in their order for the week ahead, and they can choose how often and which days they would like delivery.

New local chaplain

Contributed by Chris Bell (SLCC Secretary) At the last ‘Super Local Chaplaincy Meeting’ for the Glasshouse Country District Schools, Regional Manager of Scripture Union Steve Kylah presented Glass House Mountains State School Chaplain Nick Warren with his Commissioning Certificate.

Nick took on the role at the beginning of 2014 and works two days per week at the school helping to make a positive difference in staff and children's lives.

He is partly funded by a NSWP Grant but also needs to raise extra funds. The Chaplaincy Committee is grateful for the continued support of Chaplaincy in local primary schools and the high school.

A Fundraising Variety Concert is planned for Sunday, July 20 at the Baptist Church.

Contributed by Pam Innes The Glasshouse Country Anglican congregation farewelled Rev Ken Goodger and his family at morning tea following the service on Sunday, June 22.

Ken came to the area with his wife Stephanie, just over 20 years ago when he was a student at St Francis Theological Colledge. You might say he and Matthew Jones (now Arch Deacon) were on work experience.

They both served time at Caloundra / Glasshouse Country Parish as Curates before moving onto other parishes when they were ordained priests.

Ken eventually came back just over seven years later as Parish priest, this time with children Zoe and Jacob.

Ken's new appointment is as Dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral Wangaratta.

Last week we had a perfect end to the working week with a trip to Café on 8 at Landsborough where they have an awesome Mexican night each Friday.

With a few subtle lighting and background music changes and a special menu of tasty Mexican starters, entrees and main meals, the café had a distinctly different feel for night time dining.

We went along with friends (who had previously raved about the food to us) and I have to say I was really impressed. As I like to try a bit of everything, I found the perfect option was a tasting platter which gave plenty of choice and variety.

Everyone at our table had a different meal and all were happy with their choices and even managed to fit in some amazing homemade banoffee pie and strawberry cheesecake for dessert!

It was a great night – and my only tip would be make sure you book a table as you wouldn’t want to rock up and then miss out on a great night!

The Cream Carter

How many readers remember the days of the cream truck, and the important role of the cream carter?

In the early 1950s there were 46 dairy farms in the Peachester district. The milk was separated, and cream sent in cans to the nearest butter factory. In earlier years, the cans were delivered to Beerwah Railway Station, but eventually the cream on the main Peachester run went by road to Caboolture Butter Factory.

The carrier became a very important part of the community. Several PHC members recalled that Monday, Wednesday and Friday were the pick-up days. The cream cans were taken out to the roadside where they were picked up by the carrier. The driver would also pick up any mail, and we could send bread and meat orders, with sugar bags rolled and tied, and the order placed under the string. These supplies would be delivered in the afternoon, together with the mail and papers and empty cream cans from the previous pick-up day.

The cream truck also served the community in other ways. Anyone who arrived at Beerwah by train could get a lift up the range, and school children were often accommodated on planks on the back of the truck.

Archie Banks (pictured with his truck) bought the Peachester carrying business in 1954, and continued this service until 1973. He was the last of the traditional cream carters in the district, as by the 1970s the remaining dairy farmers had changed to bulk milk.

Archie became a well-known local identity, getting to know everyone through his carrying business. His daughter Dawn Merrett says, “I loved going in the truck, delivering the mail and the goodies.... yes, those were the days.”

Archie was also very involved in the community, and Bruce Page notes that he had another area of expertise – as a keen fisherman. He kept everyone informed about where the fish were biting!

Dairying history will be the theme for our next meeting on Sunday, July 6, from 11.00am at Peachester Hall, including shared lunch as usual. There will be a display of historical photos and documents from the PHC collection, with contributions from Maleny and Woodford Historical Societies.

School News Peachester students get 'Out of the Box’

Peachester State Primary's Preps, Years 1, 2 and 3 had an action packed day at QPAC on Thursday attending the biennial 'Out of the Box' Festival for children, eight years and under.

The Peachester Students attended a performance, 'Carnival of Animals' performed by the internationally acclaimed circus company, Circa, famed for their inventiveness, precision, and creativity. Loose change adds up

Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School's P&C Association recently held a coin race over three weeks to help raise funds for the school.

Students gathered Australian coins of any

denomination, bringing them into school and depositing them into their class container.

All of the containers were then taken to the Commonwealth Bank in Beerwah. There Branch Manager Patty Shaw, with the assistance of the coin counting machine, tallied each of the containers. An overall total of $617.10 was collected and the class who collected the most 'loose change' was Mrs Faulkner's Prep class who gathered $168.80.

The class were treated to a pizza party prize as well as a money box donated by the Commonwealth Bank to celebrate their efforts.

The P&C will spend this money to purchase items which will directly benefit the students.

Speechcraft success

Contributed by Martine Goedhart Glasshouse Country Toastmasters recently finished an eight week Speechcraft Course at the Glenview Primary School.

It was a real pleasure to teach this dynamic group of Year 7 students. At the graduation night, held in their beautiful hall, the students surprised their family and friends with the progress they made during the course.

All the speeches were written by the students themselves and were of excellent quality. They were either informative, hilarious or brought a message to the audience.

Students who did not give a speech on the night took on a role as Chairman, Vice Chairman (introducing the speakers) Table Topic Master or Evaluator and they all did a terrific job.

Every year the Youth Leadership Co-ordinators are amazed how quickly the children discover their hidden talents, when guided in the right direction.

There was no hesitation to come to the lectern and complete their task, and no nerves. Even if they felt them, they did not show it.

We'd like to thank the Glenview School for offering this course to their students

and for the last eight years, for making it part of their curriculum.

A special thanks to Belinda,(the Year 7 teacher) for her extra support given to the students during the course.

The power of music to move people

I run a weekly series of open-microphone sessions www.glasshousemusos. com.au and this last Sunday was different to no other with some very fine artists performing just for the love of making music together in a pleasant and supportive environment. Following the session however, a message from Loretta appeared on our Facebook group: Hi Michael, I took a client of mine to your session today at the café. I am a Disability Support Worker. Everyone who works with this young lady has found that music seems to hit the spot, so I decided to bring her along for a listen. I'm happy to say that she had a positive experience and in particular I would like to mention that a musician who played an original song really struck a chord with her and myself, I think his name was Warren and the song was focussed around a garden. My client is non-verbal and has an intellectual disability. She expresses herself differently to most people, today she extended a part of her inner self that she has not shown to me before, it made me get that familiar old lump in the throat and reaffirmed that music is a powerful language for all. We will be making it a regular outing for her to see live music in intimate settings. We shall be back.

Thank you Loretta, I have been lucky enough in my life to have spent time working with intellectually disabled people, and yes, the joy that can be experienced in their reaction to music is quite something. I am sure that Loretta won’t mind me publishing her letter here as it touches on the reason why we all make music - it hits an indefinable spot! I am so pleased it worked for her and I welcome her and her client back anytime. The musician in question was Warren Freeman, his song was Sanctuary, and yes, he is a beautiful writer. Musicians often feel they work in a vacuum and it is lovely when people tell us that is not the case. Thank you Loretta and thank you to everyone who every now and again says thank you for what we do.

Gold for Peachester/Conondale Band

Peachester / Conondale Band wowed the Judges at Fanfare 2014 held recently at Mountain Creek State High School in June. Nine Peachester and three Conondale music students, with their remarkable music teacher Mr Meneely conducting, combined their talents to enter the State Fanfare Competition and were awarded Gold for their enthusiasm and commitment to their performance on the day.

The biennial Fanfare competition has been held since 1985, and was devised by the State Education Department to foster the development of thousands of young musicians across the state. It also highlights the achievements of talented music teachers. Each school in the competition is levelled at ‘Gold’, ‘Silver’ or ‘Bronze’ based on their performance on the day of competition.

Mr Meneely, music and instrument teacher to the surrounding district state schools of Montville, Maleny, Conondale, Kenilworth and Peachester, inspired the children to produce a Gold performance with only two practices as a combined band.

Mr Meneely had carefully chosen three very different pieces for the band to perform, ‘Starsplitter’ Fanfare by B. Balmages, Fanfare and March by M.Sweeney and ‘Turbo Rock’. These were difficult enough to challenge the students while also enabling the students to display their different skills and accomplishments with their instruments.

With a mixture of excitement and nervousness, The Peachester / Conondale Band performed the three pieces of music to a packed auditorium and two adjudicators.

They played with focus and precision under Mr Meneely's conducting, producing a fabulous performance, the judges thought so too, awarding them a well-deserved ‘Gold’.

Well done Peachester / Conondale Band and Mr Meneely.

Mr Meneely also trained and conducted the Maleny / Montville Band of approximately 50 talented music students who also achieved ‘Gold’ on the day. Congratulations to all. www.gcnews.com.au

A bit of consideration please

This letter is to the persons who ride their motor bikes (and I use the term ‘ride’ loosely) in the Beerwah Forest Reserve, between Roys Road and Mawsons Road. First of all it is illegal to ride in this reserve, run by National Parks. There are signs everywhere to say bikes are not permitted.

Next, when you do ride, kindly consider the people who live on the properties adjoining this reserve, particularly at 6.30am, most mornings.

Weekends may be your leisure time, but it is also our leisure time, and we can’t enjoy our time with the noise that your bikes create.

I am writing this after listening to you riding from approximately 6.30am till 8.00am this morning, just a constant racket. Yes, you may enjoy yourself ripping up the reserve, but think not only of neighbours, but also of all the flora you are ripping up and disturbing the animals which live there too.

Every week pensioners are complaining – about the government, the Greens who are nit wits, Labour, who since Curtin died, are a jumble and the Liberals who just look after the rich.

I have a solution. How about they form their own party? I bet they won’t, as it is easier to whinge, wimp, and moan - that’s what we do best, instead of getting up and doing something.

Victory for common sense

The recent settlement between the Northern Land Council representing several clans and the Federal government to shelve a proposed nuclear waste dump at Muckaty Station in the Northern Territory was a victory for common sense and for the rights of the indigenous people who live on that land.

A key issue was a lack of proper consultation about the use of the site, as well as long-term health and safety concerns.

Nevertheless nuclear waste continues to pile up, and in Japan the Fukushima saga drags on.

There are 67 nuclear reactors currently under construction worldwide and there is still a market for nuclear weapons. Thanks to the Newman government, Queensland is set to be a supplier of this dangerous material with several mines proposed from Townsville west.

It is an irresponsible and short-sighted plan which needs to be scrapped.

The best thing to do with uranium is to leave it in the ground.

I would like to say a big hello and thank you to the lovely man on Bowen Road that regularly tends his beautiful garden and always waves with a big smile every time we drive past.

No matter what madness is going on in our car with my three children or worldly troubles I am consumed with, for that one second, all my worries simply melt away. I smile, return the wave, feel the sunshine, see the trees and remember how great this beautiful crazy life is.

A smile and a wave to a friend or a stranger goes a very along way and we may never know how grateful the recipient might be or how much they needed it. I do know the world would be a much happier place if we smiled more often....maybe we should start a movement ‘A smile and a wave to make your day!’ We live in a magic part of the world let’s make it the happiest.

I am writing this to thank everyone in the community for their support and good wishes.

My daughter lost her life on March 29 in a very tragic way. My family would have had a much harder time coping if it wasn’t for the wonderful people that live here. It is a good feeling knowing that my granddaughter is looked after.

We would like to thank all our family, friends and clients for their wonderful support shown to us over the last two years regarding our son, James’ fight for justice in his sexual harassment case against Peter Slipper. Unfortunately all the courage and tenacity in the world cannot pay legal bills, constant flights and accommodation, lost work days etc.

Whilst Mr Slipper had the bottomless financial backing of our government, James was looking into a future full of mounting legal costs, advisors fees and no doubt more appeals.

However, he stands tall in the knowledge that the judges found there were grounds for his case to go head and hopefully, hopefully Mr Slipper will not put yet another young man through this anguish.

Just to clarify that the recent incident on Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains Railway bridge, when Max’s horse jumped the safety fence, was in fact the first time an incident of this nature has happened near or on the railway bridge.

I have confirmed with the Beerwah Police that the rules for horse riders are that where there is a footpath, a horse rider should use it instead of the road. However, when riding on the footpath, riders need to ensure that they give way to pedestrians.

Tax returns could give super a boost

A national survey commissioned by AustralianSuper shows working Australians are expecting bigger tax returns this year compared to last.

Analysis shows that by investing these returns in their super some could boost their retirement savings by 30%.

AustralianSuper Group Executive Service and Advice, Shawn Blackmore suggested that all Australians add a ‘super checklist’ to their tax time routine.

AustralianSuper has created five super tax tips to help people get the most of their super at tax time.

The survey shows that Australians spend more than four times as long in the preparation and lodging of their tax return than reviewing their superannuation each year.

The average time spent doing their tax was around five hours compared to just 1.4 hours reviewing their superannuation, with two-thirds spending less than an hour on their super all year.

The survey also found that on average, males (1.4 hours per year) spent twice as much time reviewing their superannuation compared to females while Baby Boomers spent on average 1.6 hours per year on super compared to Gen Ys who averaged 0.7 hours per year.

Mr Blackmore said that allocating a little more time to their super could make a significant difference.

“We’re urging all Australians to spend a bit more time on their super. It may seem less urgent, but dedicating a bit of time and resources to super now, could lead to a much better outcome in the long term,” he said.

AustralianSuper’s Top 5 tax tips 1. Low income earners co-contribution The Australian Government will contribute up to $500.00 to your super if you earn less than $48,516 and make a personal super contribution during the year. If you earn less than $33,516 and contribute an extra $1,000, you will get the maximum $500.00 co-contribution.

2. Claim a rebate on spouse contributions You may be able to claim a rebate from the Government for after-tax super contributions you make for your spouse. You can put in up to $3,000 and get a tax rebate of 18% (up to $540) if your spouse earns less than $13,800.

3. Tax deduction on super contributions for the self-employed If you are a sole trader or a partner in a partnership, you could claim a full tax deduction for your personal super contributions (keep in mind that contributions above $25,000 could incur extra tax the cap increases to $30,000 in 2014/15).

4. Transition to retirement account for the over 55s You could get more out of your super by setting up a transition to retirement account.

5. Check to ensure that you have not exceeded the superannuation contribution caps

Happenings CWA Kid's for Kid's Market

The market is on July 12 from 9.00am to 1.00pm at the CWA Hall on Simpson Street. This special market day is for kids to set up their own stall and to sell their own wares.

Art, craft, toys, games, jewellery, fresh produce and yummy food will be available, from a talented and enthusiastic bunch of local kids. Come along to participate in free craft at the CWA Craft Corner, take part in a small treasure hunt, and have your faces painted by the lovely ladies from Peachester Playgroup.

The Junior Cooking Competition will take place, with two cooking categories, an anzac cookie, and a decorated cupcake. There are three age groups for the competition, up to six years, seven to 10 years, and 11 to 16 years. Six cookies, and / or six cupcakes need to be submitted per one entry.

Please drop off your entries to the CWA Hall by 10.00am, clearly labeled with your name, age and contact telephone number. Judging will take place at 12.00noon, with prizes awarded to each category winner. There is also a competition for the 'Best Dressed Stall'.

The CWA will run their sausage sizzle, and devonshire tea will be served inside the hall.

This school holidays there will be plenty of excitement for the kids at Australia Zoo, along with all the fun on offer every day of the year, they will be able seek buried treasure these school holidays.

You can pick up your treasure map on admission and follow the clues. Successful explorers will be rewarded with a prize for their treasure-hunting efforts.

Sixty male voices in song

Men of song will present a unique concert experience in Buderim on the afternoon of Sunday, July 6. Over 35 singers from Bunbury, Western Australia, will join members of the popular Buderim Male Choir in a very enjoyable program in the Buderim Uniting Church. The Concert will commence at 2.00pm. Tickets will be available at the door. The Bunbury ‘Men of Song’ will be on tour to participate in the Pemulwuy Male Voice Festival in Brisbane. Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub-Branch receives funding

I am pleased to announce that the BeerwahPeachester RSL Sub-Branch has received $2,000 in funding under the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service grants programme. The funding will be used to restore the BeerwahPeachester War Memorial.

The Saluting Their Service grants programme helps the Australian community contribute to the commemoration of those who have served, and those who continue to serve our nation.

Congratulations to Douglas Brimston and the dedicated volunteers that support the BeerwahPeachester RSL Sub-Branch.

My view: Keeping green space essential

I recently voiced my views about the importance of keeping the inter-urban break between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

While there has been much talk about various development options including Halls Creek and Beerwah East I believe that first of all we must make a decision that a very substantial ‘green/ open’ space is essential to our region’s future.

Let’s look further ahead than the proposed 30 years and decide now what we want for our region for generations ahead.

Decisions about urban sprawl cannot be made in isolation. We need to consider what is important to us and our region because once these areas are gone, they are gone for good.

I will be hosting a Disabilities Forum on July 21 to discuss the progress of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) roll out. Any individual or organisation with an interest in disability services is most welcome to attend.

As the Chair of the Joint Standing Committee of the NDIS I have visited all four of the trial sites and will pass on my observations of progress to date.

Glass House Mountains tourism gets a makeover

I am pleased to advise the community on a brilliant new project recently announced by National Parks and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson. Families that visit the Glass House Mountains National Park will now have improved access to rock-climbing facilities and increased walking, cycling, horse riding and canoeing network under a new partnership with the Glass House Mountains Advancement Network. The project will develop recreation hubs and link walking, cycling and multi-use trails around the towns of Beerburrum, Glass house Mountains, Beerwah, Landsborough and Mooloolah. This is a great outcome for the local tourism industry and I especially want to thank Cliff and Yvonne Schnick and their team at GMAN for their work on this excellent initiative.

I am very pleased to advise that preppies at Elimbah State School are set to benefit from an additional 20.2 Prep teacher aide hours under the Newman Government’s 54 million four-year Boosting Prep for our children’s future commitment. Elimbah State School is among the 127 state schools across Queensland to benefit, sharing in 2,250 additional Prep teacher aide hours per week next year. Teacher aides play a critical role in early education which is why the Government believes it’s vital to invest significantly in this area. Caloundra’s Biggest Morning Tea Do you know someone that has been touched by cancer? Sadly many of us do, myself included.

That is why I, like many other community groups in the area, decided to hold an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event recently to help raise vital funds for cancer.

I’m proud to say that more than 100 people from across the electorate representing various community groups rallied together and attended.

Not only did they show up, they also generously dug deep and together helped raise more than $900.00 to go to the Cancer Council. What an achievement.

Not all of us realise where the funds raised goes.

It can vary from giving a newly diagnosed patient support and information resources, educating our local children on eating healthily and participating in the National SunSmart Schools program, right up to helping to fund groundbreaking research into new and better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.

The Cancer Council’s message is simple, they want to beat cancer and they want to support people who go through cancer. I hope they aren’t too far off with beating cancer and one day we can all live in a cancer-free world.

(Banksia spinulosa)

This Banksia is one of the most beautiful shrubs to be seen on walks around the Glass House Mountains.

Banksia spinulosa is a shrub which grows to approximately two metres in height with multiple stems.

The leaves are narrow and finely toothed on the edges and usually whorled at the ends of the branchlets.

Banksias grow on well drained sandy soils along much of the Eastern coast of Australia. Flowers appear from April through to August and range of colours from pale yellow, to deep yellow and even a red form.

After a considerable time, woody cones appear, containing numerous seed follicles. Heat is required to release the seeds, hence Banksias regenerates well following bush fires. Banksias produce nectar which is a food source for Honeyeaters, Sugar gliders and Antechinus, while the seed follicles are targeted by the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo. Backyard animals in the Garden!

There have been some very exciting times on the farm this month. Topping the excitement charts would be the birth of our Wessex Saddleback piglets!

Ten little saddled piglets, five girls and five boys, all ten: just gorgeous! Coming equal first would be the arrival of three Black Brangus heifer calves that have been saved from my parent’s drought stricken property in North-Western New South Whales. I just only wish I could do more to help out.

Whilst pigs and calves are not a possibility in the average back yard, or farm for that matter, the benefits of animal’s habits and their manures can be appreciated in any garden.

One of the benefits of animals in the garden is that they tend to eat many pest insects and at the end of a season, are a great way of cleaning up old plant waste and turning over the soil. Whist pigs are definitely amazing tillers of the soil, chooks and ducks also offer a similar process when scratching around and both are great pest detectors. However, I can imagine many readers gasping in horror at the mere suggestion of letting the chooks out into their precious garden. I am with you on this count, and am primarily talking about in sections that are spent and are able to be enclosed. If it can’t be enclosed, I wouldn’t risk it.

Cleaning up large scale vegetable growing areas with pigs, especially root crops like potatoes and sweet potatoes, is something that I’m aiming to have a go at myself after many people have advocated the benefits of this.

Animal manures The other benefit to animals in the backyard, if not actually in the garden, is manure. The Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (N:P:K) ratio varies between animals based on what they eat and how they digest their feed.

When considering the nutrient value of manures, my favourite drop, so to speak, is chook manure (N:P:K 2:1.8:1.8), closely followed by sheep (1:0.3:0.4), cow (0.8/0.5/0.5), pig (0.6/0.4/0.3) and horse (0.5:0.3:0.4) manure.

However, my choice like most peoples is often dictated by availability and not the nutrient content of the manure. Luckily, we have a wide selection of manure being processed on our property now, however the collection process is a work in progress, as my children are not the most willing labourers!

On a final and non-related note, remember to keep the watering up to your vegies in the colder weather. It may be cool, however your vegies still need their water, at least every second day, to maintain a healthy growth. Enjoy your winter weather, until next time in Get Up and Grow!

Ecclesiastes 9:4 reads, ‘anyone who is among the living has hope--even a live dog is better off than a dead lion.’ So in other words, if we are still breathing, there is always hope! Whatever situation you might find yourself in today, there is always hope! Even when we feel like we are

struggling and all alone, there is always hope!

Hope from God is not a wish or a desire, or thinking ‘maybe one day’. The hope that comes from God is unshakeable because it is based on God’s promises, like this awesome one found in Jeremiah 29:11. ‘For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord; plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you HOPE and a future.’ In the very moment that we trust God and reach out to Him in our hopelessness, He will prove Himself real by giving us new hope and the promise of better days.

Your whole life can turn around in a moment of time, so don’t give up…there is always hope!

The Ngungun Triathlon Club

The club is affliated with Triathlon Queensland and are hosting a ‘Come & Try Duathlon and Fun Run’ series at Skippy Park, on Sunday, July 20, and Sunday, August 17.

The Duathlon is suitable for all ages and abilities, from five years and up. Participants will need to bring their own bicycle and helmet.

First timers are also welcomed in the open category which has a 1 km run, 8 km ride and finishing with another 1 km run.

There is also a 5 km fun run event for those that do not want to cycle. All events are noncompetitive with each participant receiving a 'Finishers Ribbon'. Each race participant will also go into a draw to win some fantastic prizes, drawn on the final event in August.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Pre-registration before the event is essential for non-Triathlon Queensland members.

The popular Matthew Flinders Tour trail run is on again at Beerburrum in a few weeks time and organiser Ian Javes is calling on any locals who like running to get involved. The July 27 event caters for a 5km run, a 25km run and a 55km run for those who like a challenge.

“Running along local trails allows you to enjoy the sights, smells and sounds of the Australian bush and not be sucking in car fumes and other pollutants,” Ian said.

“And organised trail runs – like the Flinders Tour – are particularly important for women as it provides them a relatively safe option to run in the bush.”

One of the biggest supporters of the events Ian organises is local community group, the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network – or GMAN.

GMAN has supervised a number of the checkpoints to support the runners in the events – providing food, warmth and TLC for any injuries.

In return, the events provide much-needed funding to GMAN which they use to maintain walking trails and other local nature conservation efforts.

Contributed by Kristinna Sutton After five grueling rounds of touch football games last Sunday, June 22, the Touch on Glass competition came to an end with Kawana team ‘Shipwrecked’ taking out the grand final 5 - 0 against Noosa team ‘Don’t Waste Us’. With national and state representative players, the final was a thrilling, high quality match.

Glasshouse Mountains Touch Football looks forward to using the money raised to assist the sports club in maintaining its fields to a high standard. The 10 open mixed teams thoroughly enjoyed the event and it successfully assisted in boosting the patronage for the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club.

The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote.

Just then our bus arrived, so we got on it and went home.
