Having the extra time has definitely meant that GC&M News has been able to include a more comprehensive coverage of the nine individual candidates.

We have also been able to use quite a number of the questions supplied by individual readers which has been really great!

Local News Local Archibald entry Dynamic local artist Darren Trebilco has stepped it up with his Archibald Portrait Prize entry this year, securing INXS rock legend Kirk Pengilly as his portrait sitter.

Trebilco, who also owns Solitude Art Gallery in Glenview, says that he is always looking for the next challenge.

“My motto is to 'go big',” says Trebilco. “What could be bigger than capturing the energy of such an Aussie music icon for Australia's most prestigious art competition. That's my kind of adventure.”

Pengilly and Trebilco caught up in Sydney in September last year to do the preliminary work for this year's portrait.

“It was great to catch up with Kirk in his home,” says Trebilco. “He spoke with me about the ups and downs of his life while I worked. We only get to see the side of the man presented in the media. I felt privileged that Kirk shared another side of himself with me.”

When discussing the type of portrait Trebilco would paint, Pengilly was very supportive of him following his creativity. Trebilco's aim was to capture both the professional and personal side of Pengilly.

Event organisers expect average spectator attendance numbers to be around 16,500 per day, pumping $8.5 million into the local economy across the four days of the event.

Event company – Inside Line Events International – CEO David Rollins believes that in reality the dollar value to the community will be substantially more, as for one thing, motorcyclists have to buy everything when they get to where they're going.

“And we want the revenue the event generates to stay in the town, so will preference local suppliers with the appropriate skills,” Mr Rollins said.

“Safety for the riders and spectators will be paramount, with the resources on hand to include rapid response medical intervention vehicles, ambulances, medical helicopters and a portable trauma clinic.

“Infrastructure, such as communications and roads in the area will also have to be upgraded for this event. These improvements will stay on year round.”

The event organisers say they will work closely with the community to minimise the access issues for residents when roads are closed between 8.00am 4.00pm across the four days of the event.

“If, for example, there is an emergency involving a resident at home while the event is in progress, the race will be stopped and the emergency dealt with,” Mr Rollins explained.

“Traffic management is to be handled by professional traffic management services combined with police (who the event will pay for) and security services to manage any crowd issues.

“Wildlife consultants are to be engaged to assist in the development of wildlife containment strategies. The Rural Fire Service will also be on hand to deal with emergency issues that fall within in its purview.”

George Spring, event manager, said that the event planning includes world’s best practice cleanup and waste management, so that when the event is over, they will be leaving Maleny better than they found it.

“Also after the event, an advertising campaign will remind motorcyclists visiting the Maleny area that if they speed they put the race at risk. As motorcyclists everywhere want the Sunshine Coast International TT perhaps more than any other group, we believe this self-monitoring will lead to greater respect for speed limits on Maleny’s very special roads,” said Mr Spring.

“And the event will continue to draw tourists to Maleny long after the last racer crosses the finish line, benefiting all businesses all the other days of the year.”

Peaceful roads or motorbike trials?

Residents of the Sunshine Coast hinterland’s newly formed community group ‘Peaceful Roads Sunshine Coast’ have announced that they would not accept the proposal for a motorbike race on public roads in the region.

“With the Sunshine Coast International TT, Maleny can have an engine generating tourist dollars to rival Victoria’s MotoGP and the Formula 1 GP,” said Rollins.

“And for those very special four days in December, Maleny will be the envy of the world.

“It goes without saying that we firmly believe the Sunshine Coast International TT will be a wonderful thing for Maleny and Queensland, and become an annual pilgrimage for tourists from around the world.”

The group has formed in response to an event promoter from Sydney’s recent proposal to create an annual event which involves motorbikes racing around 50 km of sealed public roads over four days around Maleny and Peachester just before Christmas from 2017.

The group is made up of local residents and businesses and has been established to inform the broader Sunshine Coast community of the impacts such a race would cause.

Spokesperson for the group Dr Barry Traill said having main roads and towns in Sunshine Coast Hinterland closed down for such a race wouldn’t be good for most local residents and businesses and wouldn’t be fair for most local residents and businesses that would be directly impacted by it.

“It’s obviously not acceptable that thousands of people would have to be locked down in their houses, or move out completely, our daily lives and jobs would be highly disrupted for something like this,” he said.

“Preparation and removal of race structures would also cause disruption on roads and in towns in the weeks before and after the event.

“Thousands of people in the hundreds of residences in the towns and along the 50 km route would not be able to leave their houses for work, study or shopping, while races are on.

“Many local businesses would need to close or completely relocate for an extended time and many workers would be cut off from commuting to the coast,” he said.

“Maleny, Peachester and other towns in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast are thriving towns with a vibrant tourism industry here based on the serenity of our peaceful green countryside, the exceptional scenery and the many offerings of our friendly towns.

“We have thousands of visitors every week who come for weddings, to enjoy good food and music, or just to have some quiet time in the country.

“Many visitors and locals attend some of our dozens of existing events that include car shows, the Wood Expo, and many music and food events and festivals.

“Unlike this motorbike race on public roads, these events work for the region attracting visitors both new and old and don’t stop residents and workers going about their daily lives and work.

“We do not believe that it will work here and it won’t deliver benefits for most of the local people and businesses of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

“The group expects and assumes that the Sunshine Coast Council will inform the proponent that his proposal is rejected due to the unacceptable impacts on local people and the region as a whole.

“We encourage people concerned about this proposal to get more information from online at Peaceful Roads Sunshine Coast on Facebook,” said Dr Traill.

Show of support for Mooloolah petition

A petition containing more than 2,000 signatures calling on the State Government to help the Mooloolah Community Centre has been presented to Caloundra MP Mark McArdle.

In just two months, the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre put out the call far and wide for support in their quest to obtain a long-term lease up to 99 years, or donation of the deed of the land the centre operates on that is owned by Education Queensland.

“We cannot do any capital works on the site because we don’t own it,” principal petitioner and secretary of the Mooloolah Valley Community Association Anita Verwayen said.

“The community has got right behind this and clearly they can see the value of this volunteerrun community centre.

Traffic lights at Glass House intersection getting closer Excitement came to Glass House Mountains recently, when the traffic light infrastructure was installed as part of the Steve Irwin Way and Reed Street intersection redevelopment.

Locals have been pondering when the long awaited traffic lights will be switched on.

According to a spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the traffic signals are expected to be operational in early July.

“However, this is subject to weather and completion of electrical work, testing and commissioning,” they said.

“We thank motorists for their patience and

cooperation with changed traffic conditions, including reduced speed limits and traffic control.”

Local State Member Andrew Powell is relieved to see the progress.

“Finally we can see the literal ‘light’ at the end of the tunnel with the new traffic signals at Reed Street due to be operational in the coming weeks,” said Mr Powell.

“I am so proud that, as a community, we have been able to work together to deliver this desperately needed upgrade which will go a long way to keeping locals and visitors safe on our roads.”

Start studying sooner at USC Sunshine Coast residents wanting to begin tertiary study this year can apply for mid-year entry in a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

USC Manager of Student Recruitment Elisa Reeves said mid-year entry was ideal for those who have taken some time off after finishing school, as well as for people considering a career change or enhancing their existing qualifications.

“Whether a recent school leaver or more senior, people don’t have to wait until Semester 1 next year to start their higher education journey,” Mrs Reeves said.

USC offers mid-year entry for almost 90 study programs including Business, Communication, Creative Industries, Design, Education, Engineering, Health, Humanities, Information Technology, Psychology, Science and Social Sciences.

Mrs Reeves said USC’s free award-winning university bridging program, Tertiary Preparation Pathway, (TPP), was also available in Semester 2, which begins on July 25.

“TPP is a great alternative entry option for people who may not believe they are eligible for university or who want to upgrade their study skills before beginning undergraduate degrees next year,” she said.

NBN plans take a beating As the National Broadband Network (NBN) continues to roll out across the region, providing super-fast internet to many on the coast via a fibre network, the hinterland continues to languish behind.

With most non-urban properties locally scheduled to be connected to the lesser fixed wireless network by 2020, the NBN plans have hit a roadblock with many of their towers failing to receive the necessary council approvals.

Of the five applications for wireless broadband towers made recently to the Sunshine Coast Council, four have been refused for not meeting the requirements as set out in the Planning Scheme.

The proposed towers at Hunchy (two applications), Beerwah, Eudlo and Glass House Mountains were rejected by Council, leaving the Bald Knob installation as the sole approved site locally.

Commenting on the Eudlo application refusal, Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said there were around 25 existing dwellings that would have been within 400 metres of the proposed facility, including Eudlo State School 270 metres away.

"Council has not approved the development as it conflicts with the planning scheme at both strategic and code levels and there are not sufficient grounds in the public interest to justify or override the identified conflicts,” Cr McKay said.

“Any benefit to the community associated with improving local wireless broadband access is outweighed by the poor site location.

"It was considered that the scale and environmental characteristics of the proposed facility would alter the rural landscape values and heritage significance of Eudlo and impact upon the views and amenity enjoyed by residents and tourists.

“The proposal also represented a conflict with the telecommunications facility code in relation to appropriate separation from sensitive land uses and it’s siting with compatible uses – the facility was proposed to be located on a rural parcel of land in a relatively prominent position along an identified scenic route.

“We believe there are alternative options and sites available for this service which are further removed from areas of scenic and cultural importance."

With the functionality of the wireless broadband network reliant upon having a web of interconnected towers across the landscape, the ‘missing links’ may compromise NBN’s planned roll-out timeframe.

Similar reasons were given by council officers for the refusal of the application for the tower proposal in the grounds of the Glasshouse Mountains Campground, located at the corner of Mount Beerwah and Old Gympie Roads.

NBN were contacted for their response to the council decisions.

According to Kylie Lindsay, Corporate Affairs Manager for Queensland, they are disappointed with council's decision to reject NBN fixed wireless facilities at Eudlo, Beerwah and Mount Ngungun.

“NBN consults extensively with the local community and councils to achieve the best outcomes so the region can enjoy the many benefits fast broadband can deliver,” said Ms Lindsay.

“We select sites based on location, access for power and construction requirements, and quality coverage for premises in the vicinity. We will continue to work constructively with the community and council to deliver broadband to the region.”

sites will impact the future delivery of the service locally, Ms Lindsay was unequivocal.

“Unlike mobile phone towers, NBN facilities require direct line-of-sight, which means even small changes in location will leave more families without fast broadband. NBN facilities are part of a linked network, so rejection of one facility can impact many more downstream facilities,” she said.

“There is no Australian standard which mandates minimum separation distances from community sensitive locations for telecommunications infrastructure. The Sunshine Coast Council's planning scheme does however recommend that communications providers locate their facilities more than 400m from residences.

“Before the new planning scheme was introduced, Sunshine Coast (and Noosa Shire) Council approved 11 NBN fixed wireless facilities that were within 400m of homes.”

Asked how NBN will respond to the decisions and whether they will seek Federal government intervention, Ms Lindsay said that NBN will be considering these determinations as it proceeds with the rollout of services to the Sunshine Coast.

“NBN must develop its network within the framework of the state planning law in every state jurisdiction - and we intend to continue working within the state's planning laws going forward.

We will also continue to work with councils as we can to resolve network issues.

“NBN has built more than 1300 fixed wireless facilities in the last four years, meaning a fast and reliable broadband service can be made available to more than 350,000 homes and businesses in rural and regional Australia. The vast majority of these facilities are located in close proximity to the communities they are serving.”

Number plate safety - We had a great turn out for our 'Turn the

Screws' event at Glass House Mountains on Saturday, June 18. Over 70 vehicles had non reversible screws fitted to their number plates to prevent the plates from being stolen.

The event was made possible by the Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch group who made a successful funding application to Neighbourhood Watch Queensland to purchase the special non reversible screws, and the Beerwah Lions who supplied the extra manpower. Thanks to the members from both organisations who helped out and to the volunteers in policing for their assistance as well.

ViP service recognised

The Volunteers in Policing ViP program commenced in the Sunshine Coast District in January 2015 and we have17 ViPs on the Coast.

The work that ViP complete across the Sunshine Coast District is invaluable. Their roles vary depending on station needs and resourcing, but many of our ViP are involved in organising and assisting at community events, administrative functions at stations and helping distribute crime prevention flyers.

The ViP’s also write blogs, deliver presentations to retirement villages and liaise with Neighbourhood Watch groups.

On Thursday, June 16 the Sunshine Coast District Crime Prevention Unit held a District conference with ViPs. Brian Lewis of Glass House Mountains who is a ViP at the Beerwah Police Station, received a Bronze Certificate for 200 hours of volunteering.

Are you a strawberry grower?

As it’s strawberry time, and the 2016 Super Strawberry Competition (in association with the Beerwah Charity Sports) starts this week, we wanted to remind both farmers and back yard vege gardeners about entering the completion!

The competition has been rather slow over the last few years – few really super entries.

We hear it is all the fault of the weather, or perhaps the plant varieties!

So to liven up the competition for 2016 we are introducing an extra class: ‘Most Unusual Strawberry’.

Forest Ecology Course Hinterland Bush Links will run the Subtropical Forests Ecology Course at Booroobin at the end of August.

This four-day residential course was a great success in 2015. Some 26 landholders, students and conservation managers had a stimulating and fun time getting to know more about how our local soils, plants and animals interact.

We have a great line-up of experts instructing through the course. These include Spencer Shaw on plants, Tony Bright on wildlife and Fergus Fitzgerald on geology, among many others.

The course provides participants with the knowledge to restore bushland and connect it to remnant habitat in the wider landscape.

If you own or manage land for conservation, this course will give you a strong foundation for planning the best way to care for it. But it’s also for those who just love to get out in the bush. Science student earns 50,000 Euro scholarship A University of the Sunshine Coast Science student is packing her bags for Europe after receiving a 50,000 Euro ($AUD 76,000) scholarship to study in a competitive international Master’s program.

Isabelle Russell, 22, was one of just 35 students chosen worldwide for the Erasmus Mundus Master Programme in Evolutionary Biology (MEME), which will see her studying in Sweden, the Netherlands, France and Germany over the next two years.

Isabelle, who grew up in Woodford, will begin her European study experience in August with a summer school at Uppsala University in Sweden.

Now in the final weeks of her Bachelor of Science (Biology and Biotechnology) at USC, Isabelle said she was thrilled to be pursuing her passion for science at the internationally renowned universities in Germany and the Netherlands.

“It was a pretty rigorous application process,” she said. “It turned out that 180 people applied, and I hadn’t thought I would make it through the first round.

Having completed a special research project at USC’s Centre for Animal Health Innovation as part of her undergraduate degree, Isabelle said she was looking forward to undertaking a research project in microbiology and immunology through MEME. “I’m interested in bacterial phages, which are viruses that affect bacteria,” she said.

“There’s been some research in using them in combination with antibiotics to combat antibiotic resistance, so I’d like to study which phages work best with different antibiotics.

“I’d like to pursue a career in research, and I think the MEME program will be a great start towards that goal.”

Rock baby rock!

Contributed by Pauline Clarke, Glass House Country View Club The Glass House Mountains Sports Club was turned into a 60’s rock ‘n roll venue on Wednesday, June 15 when the Glass House Country View Club held their 13th birthday party. The hall was decked out with 60’s posters, records and memorabilia and the dining tables were lavishly decorated to reflect the era. Some 50 or so members and guests danced and sang along with an absolutely fabulous duo, Diana and Barney, who provided rock ‘n roll music throughout the event. The music coupled with an excellent lunch provided by Sue and the ladies from the Sports Club made the day very special. Thanks folks for all your efforts.

There were a total of 27 raffle prizes to be won by members and guests and a special large hamper that was won by Kym Duguid. The best dressed ‘rock ‘n roller’ prize went to Yvonne Robinson (pictured) in her little red polka dot number. Although numbers were down this year due to illness and holidays everyone had a great time including our View Club national councillor Barbara Cameron. Clothes swappers enjoyed rummaging amongst the piles of pre-loved clothes as they filled their bags to revamp their wardrobes.

The clothes that were left over were donated to Caboolture Family Haven, Need-A-Feed supporting emergency relief across Glasshouse Country and the Colleen Clarke and Mooloolah Community Op Shop. New volunteers Vicki Masteika are always welcome to help out with future events, other community initiatives or general operations of the Centre. It is a pleasure each year to teach the group. This year we worked with 27 Year 6 students that we divided into two smaller groups.

Each student had the opportunity to get familiar with presenting at least three speeches, learned how to chair a meeting, introduce a speaker, participate in a debate and the most challenging task, how to answer a ‘Table Topic’ question.

This is without knowing what the Table Topic Master is going to ask you, you have to talk on that subject for one minute. Surprisingly that did not seem to be a problem for them.

At their recent graduation, the students also surprised their family and friends with the progress they had made over the eight weeks.

Every year the school’s Youth Leadership Co-ordinators are amazed at how quick the students discover their hidden talents when guided in the right direction.

Horse owners take heed

Biosecurity Queensland is urging horse owners to be aware of new biosecurity laws that will commence on July 1. Part of Queensland will be designated as the tick free zone and the remainder as the tick-infested zone. The tick line has been strengthened and simplified by removing the control zone and aligning the tick line with stronger, double fenced boundaries in some areas.

The new tick line map can be viewed at www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au Owners of low risk livestock, such as horses, will have an obligation to only move tick free animals into the tick free zone. All horse owners will still have an obligation to report the presence of cattle tick in the tick free zone. Cattle tick infested properties in the tick free zone will need to ensure their livestock are tick free before they are moved and will need to eradicate ticks from their property.

General Manager for Animal Biosecurity and Welfare, Dr Allison Crook said the property identification code (PIC) system would continue under the new legislation and changes to property registration would be minimal.

“It is important horse owners understood the new laws,” she said.

“If you keep a horse, you are considered a registrable biosecurity entity and must register your details with Biosecurity Queensland from July 1.

“This is similar to the previous property registration requirements – the terminology of who must register is a little different, but what is considered a designated animal remains unchanged,” she said.

Dr Crook said in most cases the owner of the horse would need to register because they normally had ultimate care and control of the animals.

“If you keep a horse, when you register as a biosecurity entity, a PIC will be issued.

If you already have a PIC, you’ll be automatically registered as a biosecurity entity on July 1 and registration will remain effective for three years.”

Dr Crook said the requirements for recording horse movements had changed to ensure a stronger traceability system. From 1 July, every time a horse moves from a property, a movement record must be created,” Dr Crook said.

“The person receiving the horse must also create a movement record.

“If you are moving a horse across the tick line or from an infested place in the free zone, the record must be in your possession while travelling.

“A range of methods can be used to record the details of the movement record, including electronic format on a smart device or in writing. As long as it includes the required details, it will be a valid record.

New predator toxin becomes available

The fight to stop the widespread damage to agriculture and the environment caused by wild dogs and foxes will be fortified with two new poison baits – Dogabait and Foxecute – now available for use in Australia.

This major collaborative research and development investment between Animal Control Technologies Australia Pty Ltd (ACTA), Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) and the Australian government through the Invasive Animals CRC has resulted in the first new predator toxin in 50 years becoming available, since 1080 was released on the market.

The new baits contain a chemical toxin called para-amino propiophenone (short name PAPP) which causes a targeted and quick death to wild dogs and foxes when consumed. Unlike other predator toxins, these new PAPP bait products have an effective antidote, which needs to be administered by a vet. However due to the fast acting nature of the baits, normal precautions and notifications must be undertaken to protect pets and working dogs during baiting programs.

Professor Linton Staples, Managing Director of ACTA who are manufacturing and distributing the products, is proud to see these new baits launched after more than 11 years of thorough scientific testing within Australia and overseas.

“Through extensive field trials around the country these baits have proven to be highly effective, the PAPP chemical has been shown to be absorbed quickly from specially designed wild dog and fox baits developed by ACTA,” Professor Staples said.

Greg Mifsud, National Wild Dog Facilitator for the IA CRC emphasised that these new baits will complement existing control techniques, such as 1080 baits, trapping and shooting, to manage wild dogs and foxes within Australia.

“These new baits will enable a more comprehensive regional management approach to wild dog and fox management within Australia. We will always emphasise an integrated and coordinate approach to wild dog and fox control and there is certainly no one silver bullet to solve the problem but we welcome any new tools within the toolbox,” Mr Mifsud said.

PAPP bait products are available for sale to approved users and come under the same restrictions as purchasing and using 1080 baits. Use of the PAPP bait products differs between states and territories, so it is recommended checking with your local authority before use.

By Sonia Clark In celebration of NAIDOC week, to be held from July 3 - 10, Maleny Art Direct (M.A.D) are excited to be hosting a ‘Dreamtime’ Art Exhibition that will showcase the work of award winning local artists and feature works from the Gapuwiyak Culture and Arts Group from East Arnhem Land.

Maleny Art Direct is a privately owned art space that actively seeks to promote and support local artists as well as providing an artistic arena that also connects with other events in the wider community.

One such event is NAIDOC week, the annual celebration in early July of the history, culture and achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme for this year’s NAIDOC week is ‘Songlines: The living narrative of our nation’, and the upcoming exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to both acknowledge significant events in the wider community and celebrate the great significance of indigenous culture.

The exhibition will feature a series of paintings from acclaimed local artist Jane Nicol entitled ‘The Land Remembers’ which was originally commissioned for Reconciliation Week. Jane’s work has won numerous national and international awards.

Local indigenous artist David Miller will also be showcasing his work, with the talented award winning artist exhibiting at over 60 exhibitions throughout Australia.

Rosetta Books next door to the art space will also be showing their support for NAIDOC week and the exhibition by displaying Aboriginal art books to tie in with the celebrations.

‘Dreamtime’ will feature both two-dimensional and three-dimensional authentic indigenous art and will launch at 5.00pm on Saturday, July 9.

The exhibition will also include a selection of artworks on display for sale.

School News Excellent dance team

Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School's Dance Excellence Team was started in 2015 to provide more students with an opportunity to be involved in extracurricular activities as well as to encourage school spirit and promote a love of dance. The program is an exciting chance for students to develop their dance technique, learn great choreography, and most of all, have fun!

Throughout the year, the group performs at numerous events both within the school and at external competitions in South-East Queensland.

Most recently they competed in the Sunshine Plaza Breakthru Competition, making it through to the Grand Final. Although they did not win, they were extremely proud just to make it that far.

Creative Industries Teacher, Alyce Brook, and Teacher Aide, Haley Will, have guided the Dance Excellence Team for 2016 and watched their talent and confidence increase with each performance.

Through hard work and dedication, the group continues to grow and no doubt will remain an exciting program at Landsborough State School for many years to come.

Leading by serving

Glasshouse Christian College Primary Leaders’ Induction is not a lip service event. The Year 6 students have given up close to 900 hours just in the first semester helping younger students and serving others. They have well and truly earned their leadership badge and Thursday’s ceremony was the perfect time to celebrate it.

The special service began with singing and student performances followed by Head of Primary Cheryl Bryers reminding the students that leadership is all about serving.

The leadership program is an integral part of building a culture of servanthood right through the College. Leaders help younger students by: opening tricky wrappers during lunchtime, assisting them in the library with games or books, setting up sandpit toys or bikes and cleaning up afterwards, helping in the little red café and even refereeing football matches.

Principal Mike Curtis congratulates the students on their hours of service The final stage of the formal ceremony is a very emotional one. Proud parents and grandparents are invited to step up the front and pin the leadership badge on their own child. Some parents smile with pleasure, some cry with the emotion of the moment but the one thing they all have in common is how proud they are of their child.

Once the formal ceremony is over, student leaders and their invited guests enjoyed a special morning tea together.

Dancers breakthru

Last Saturday, June 11, the Year 5 and 6 girls from Peachester State School performed in the Breakthru dance competition held at the Sunshine Plaza.

They had been practicing their dance with the help of Mrs Emerson, classroom music teacher, and Teghan, dance choreographer from TDC Dance program, over the past few weeks and were really excited to be able to perform in the competition.

This is the first time Peachester has entered the competition.

Lucy, Kyla, Maddie, Jessie, Breanna, Carys, Shayla, Georgia and Jasmine The girls enjoyed watching the other schools perform and would love to do it again next year.

Garden Expo dishes up dirt cheap holiday entertainment Youngsters will have the opportunity to get their hands dirty and beat school holiday boredom, with Queensland Garden Expo organisers having unveiled the largest ever range of free children’s activities on offer at the annual event between July 8 and 10 at the Nambour Showgrounds.

Queensland Garden Expo Event Manager Marion Beazley said much-loved gardening guru and Gardening Australia presenter Costa Georgiadis would lead the youngsters in honing their green thumbs, hosting Costa's Compost Academy for Kids throughout the event for the first time.

“This activity is a really fun and hands-on way for kids to learn about composting to help feed the soil and hydrate the landscape,” Ms Beazley said.

“Throw in the importance of recycling, repurposing and refusing and it has all the ingredients necessary to tackle sustainable futures right there in your waste receptacle. Costa will work with participants to sort through common items disposed of around the home and identify which ones can and can’t be composted.”

“His talks and ‘Garden Rambles’ at the Expo are always a strong favourite amongst adults and kids alike, so we decided to raise the bar even higher this year with the introduction of the composting workshops on The Terraces,” she said.

“I have no doubt these will be a popular item on the program, so we have scheduled three timeslots across the weekend – Saturday, July 9 at 11.00am and 2.30pm, and Sunday, July 10 at 1.00pm.”

Ms Beazley said dirtgirl from the hit kids’ television show dirtgirlworld would also be in attendance at the event on Saturday and Sunday, and a brand new children’s area known as the Kids Garden Patch would be launched at the 2016 Expo.

“The Kids Garden Patch will include a craft area as well as an opportunity to dig for vegetables, plant seeds and move sand around the garden patch, and there will be kids’ planting activities in the Giant Kitchen Garden,” Ms Beazley said.

“As always, Old McDonald’s Farm will offer kids the chance to get up close and personal with a range of farm animals including calves, goats, chickens and ducks, just to name a few.”

“Last, but not least, we’ll once again set up the popular free children’s playground including giant slide, jumping castle and merry-go-round, which will be open throughout the three-day event.”

The 2016 Queensland Garden Expo will be held at the Nambour Showgrounds, Coronation Avenue, Nambour between July 8 and 10.

It’s tax time again and Sunshine Coast Police are warning local residents to be vigilant within the next few weeks for scams falsely claiming that money is owed to the tax department.

Many similar scams have operated in the past couple of years and each year the scams become more sophisticated and harder to spot.

ATO focuses on rental property owners

With Tax Time 2016 just around the corner, the ATO is encouraging rental property owners to check out the information on their website to better understand their obligations and get their claims right.

Assistant Commissioner Graham Whyte said tax time can be tricky for rental property owners.

“Our message to any rental property owners having a hard time understanding their obligations is that we’re here to help,” Mr Whyte said.

“The best place to find out what you can claim and which records you’ll need is on our website. We also have some how-to videos as well as a comprehensive rental property guide.

“I’d also remind rental property owners and anyone who wishes to prepare their own tax return they can now lodge online with myTax – the quick, easy, safe and secure way to lodge online.”

Mr Whyte said the ATO would be paying close attention to excessive interest expense claims and incorrect apportionment of rental income and expenses between owners.

“We are also looking at holiday homes that are not genuinely available for rent and incorrect claims for newly purchased rental properties,” Mr Whyte said.

“If you are claiming deductions for your rental property, be sure to include all your rental income and make sure that your property was genuinely available for rent when the expense was incurred.

“You must also make sure to apportion any deductions to take any private use into account, and you must have records for the claims you make.

“The ATO’s ability to identify incorrect rental property claims is becoming more sophisticated due to enhancements in technology and the extensive use of data.”

You Said It Sorely disappointed

Recently I have been undertaking a renovation of a rental property and I would like to genuinely thank all of those local tradies, electrician, tiler, painter, concreter, floor sander, and plumber who have been prompt, reliable and a pleasure to do business with.

However, I have to say in regard to the kitchen renovation I have been sorely disappointed, unfortunately I received no service or attention and their responses in general were underwhelming, to say the least.

Both of the businesses I contacted arrived promptly to measure up for a small kitchen makeover and assured me of following up with a quote within 24 hours. Over a month later and neither of these businesses have followed through.

I understand that larger jobs may take priority and some are too small, fiddly and uneconomical.

However, if you promise a quote, you should at least have the courtesy and good business sense to supply one – as you never know you may have lost a valuable future opportunity.

If you know at the outset the job is not for you, then say so and avoid the waiting and time wasting when others who are professional enough to give it a go, can be contacted.

Deserving our support

One major party has the mantra ‘jobs and growth’ and the other has ‘people matter’ yet both of them have embraced an un-Australian position to one particular group of less fortunate people.

One mob has encouraged growth in hardness of heart, treating harshly those refugees who have sacrificed everything to find their way here by boat in desperation and whose motivation would make them great citizens.

Even though the other side of politics says ‘people matter’ they are endorsing the dreadful, mind-numbing treatment of people held in detention.

Does either side deserve our support, when there is an alternative?

At least one party has a compassionate approach and would welcome genuine refugees who would enrich our community and allow us to be generous and caring true Australians.

S.O.S for Chaplaincy

The Chaplaincy Services at Beerwah, Beerburrum, Landsborough and Glass House Primary and Beerwah High School need your help to continue at their current capacity!

It was revealed at a recent ‘Glasshouse District School Chaplaincy Committee’ meeting that the deficit for the Combined Chaplaincy Services for the year to date was a whopping $15,863.53.

Without further financial assistance days may have to be cut. The Chaplaincies of the Primary Schools are currently operating at two days per week each. The high school (whose Chaplaincy Service started back in 1993) has had a five day Chaplain for a long time, primarily backed by a loyal band of financial supporters from the local Glasshouse Country Community.

We value the loyal support of a number of families, businesses and organisations who have regularly made donations to support local youth over many years.

The Primary Schools came on board with Chaplaincy in 2013 when they were successful in obtaining the Government Chaplaincy Grants, but the reality is that this covers less than two days per week.

Hospital funding

Between 2007 and 2013, Federal Labor developed an Agreement across all States and political parties which cooperatively arranged funding of hospitals. This Agreement, signed in April 2010, meant that the Commonwealth would fund ‘50 per cent growth of the national efficient price of every public hospital service provided to public patients.’ The Liberal Party in its 2013 Campaign declared that it would not alter the funding. Fifty seven billion dollars was calculated to be the Commonwealth share over a decade. It was calculated by Government officers with responsibility for managing health budgets.

The following year the Coalition abandoned this Agreement, without consultation with States.

The result put simply is that the Abbott/Turnbull Government has cut $133 million from the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services budget over the forward estimates. Labor’s responsible financial planning was designed to facilitate health planning into the future.

The Liberal political agenda overshadows their concern for public health.

Hard-left unions, the GetUp! group and activist organisations have formed an alliance here on the Sunshine Coast. We have seen an increase in vandalism of conservative political signage in the past few days and an influx of paid volunteers by the unions sitting on pre-poll booths with their anti-government signs.

The CFMEU has a $10 million-plus war chest to campaign against the Turnbull government at this federal election. This war chest is raised through mandatory levies it places on its members. Even

Let’s talk about the Senate At the polling booth this Saturday, you’ll be given two voting slips – a green one for the House of Representatives and a white one for the Senate.

The green one will have the names of the nine candidates standing for the seat of Fisher.

To complete that ballot paper it’s a simple task of numbering all the squares from one to nine, starting at one for your first preference.

The Senate (or white) ballot paper is a little different.

The Senate is the ‘house of review’ in the federal parliament – and is made up of politicians elected to represent each state and territory, rather than individual electorates.

It is traditionally the house where smaller parties and independents have the best chance

of being elected and consequently the number of candidates who nominate tends to be considerable.

This year there are 122 candidates vying for one of the 12 Queensland Senate positions, meaning the ballot paper is substantial – about one metre long.

And the voting rules have changed as well from previous years.

The ballot paper will have clear instructions printed on it, so a good starting point is to read them carefully.

If you prefer to be pre-warned, then here’s the basics you need to know.

The ability to vote above the line or vote below the line remains the same as it’s been before.

You only do one – above or below – you don’t do both.

If you choose to vote above the line, you will need to number at least six boxes.

Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least six boxes.

If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number at least twelve boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.

Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.

Later, my own company started as a small partnership that grew to be the number one globally recognised provider of safety leadership in the hazardous industry sector.

These are skills and knowledge that only comes from experience in working with people from different attitudes and points of view.

The Hinterland, like many other parts of Australia is hurting. It is hurting through years of neglect brought about by successive LNP and Labor governments.

In addition to 6kw free solar powered electricity supply, with surplus delivered to businesses with power companies and local authorities charged with managing power distribution locally, I will also ensure the dangerous Steve Irwin Way is upgraded with crash barriers down the middle and / or the road duplicated.

Even without being elected, we have set up a shadow democracy that will run alongside the sitting member of parliament; where the members of an electorate can demonstrate what the majority really want.

We will be setting up this system on all levels of government, and all sitting politicians will begin to know that we have a person ready to take their job at the next election if the people like us better than them. We are better because we are you.

Solitude on display

The July exhibition at Vianta Arts is a show of original photographs by Michele Deveze entitled ‘Solitude’. The photographs, mostly taken in our red (and white) centre, as well as around the Mediterranean and in Asia, evoke that sense of stillness and quiet, that only solitude can endow.

As Michele says, solitude is not necessarily an outcome of being alone, and it definitely is not associated with loneliness – it is that perfect inner quiet and calm that accompanies peace of mind.

Photography has always been a passion of hers – having saved up for and bought her first Pentax Spotmatic in the 1970s.

“Of course – these days photography is very different to what it was in the 1970s,” explains Michele.

“Back then we rarely worked in colour – colour film and processing was too expensive; and we didn’t know if our image had ‘worked’ or not, until we had developed the film and printed the photographs.

“And - editing? There was no Photoshop in those days! We learned to manipulate the image in the darkroom, using our hands to block the light from the enlarger – and still, we didn’t know if it had worked until we developed the photograph,” Michele said.

Our Mountain Home exhibition on display

Following its success at the Hub in April; Arts Connect Inc. will be displaying ‘Our Mountain Home’ at the Arts and Ecology Centre, Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden.

This members’ showcase, which features the work of 12 Sunshine Coast artists, will be open to the public from June 27 until July 10.

In this exhibition, the participating artists have focused on exploring layers of thought, feelings and observations of the Glasshouse Mountains region.

The Artists will portray their own interpretations of the ecology, flora, fauna, indigenous history and geological story of this iconic, scenically rich and mystifying place, putting their own idea

of its connection within their own story, their own place within this ancient yet modern environment.

The works exhibited feature a range of mediums that seek to portray to visitors the wonderfully unique feel of the Glasshouse Mountains.

The Arts Connect Inc. artists have incorporated their interpretations in both 2D and 3D works including ceramics, found objects, oils, acrylics, watercolours, mixed-media and photography.

The guest demonstrator and 2015 Pastellist of the Year Winner, Jan Hodgsen will be demonstrating ‘How to paint a winning still-life’.

The movie The Daughter Maleny Film Society screens ‘The Daughter’ on Saturday, July 2 at 7.15pm with dinner from 6.00pm catered by Wild Rocket at the Maleny Community Centre 23, Maple Street.

Simon Stone directs ‘The Daughter’ which is the story of 16-year-old Hedvig (Odessa Young) who is about to discover there are secrets in her family’s past. Released to critical acclaim earlier this year, the film is loosely based on Henrik Ibsen’s play ‘The Wild Duck’. Set in a rural mill town, mill boss Henry (Geoffrey Rush) is about to remarry a women half his age (Anna Torv). His estranged son Christian (Paul Schneider), returns from the US for the wedding and reconnects with his old school friend, Oliver (Ewen Leslie), who is about to lose his mill job. Charlotte (Miranda Otto), a teacher at the local school, is married to Oliver and Hedvig is their daughter. With the impending wedding and the return of Christian, latent family secrets begin to unfold pitting fathers and sons against each other. The cinematography and well-written script make this a must-see Australian drama.

Joan Baez Tribute at Maleny Brisbane singer Christine Venner-Westaway and friends will present a Joan Baez tribute at the next Goodwills’ house concert in Maleny on Sunday, July 10. She will be accompanied by Mick Donnelly (guitar) and Sue Wighton and Mary Brettell (vocal harmonies).

A stalwart of the Brisbane folk scene, Christine’s signature solo work premiered at the ‘Clennell Hall Folk Festival’, Northumberland UK in May 2014.

The show has since been performed at various Brisbane folk venues and at Perth’s Jackadder Folk Club in April 2016. The Goodwills (Bob and Laurel Wilson) will perform an opening set and afternoon tea will be available. The concerts starts at 2.00pm. Ticket prices are $15.00 and $12.00 concession. Montville Wood Expo The Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild will once again put all of their competitive skills and products on show on Saturday and Sunday, July 2 and 3 from 9.00am to 4.00pm each day at the Montville Community Hall, Village Green, Montville and entry is free.

Items on display and for sale will consist of exquisite carvings, squatter’s chairs, plates, bowls, musical instruments, blanket boxes, clocks, and a large collection of toys.

The toys include a broad range of pull along, educational, ships, airplanes helicopters, rocking horses, and many more.

All items are produced by local craftsmen from local timber so there are no plastics and no imports.

And you will be able to see wood carving demonstrations on the day.

Maleny peace mural celebration The Art for Family Peace Mural grand finale will be held next Thursday, June 30 at 2.00pm, all welcome.

Throughout the month of June, the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) has hosted the creation of this extraordinary community artwork pioneered by artist Rob Clark.

Next Thursday will see the culmination of weeks of community artistic contributions, scribed messages and fun with elders, students, families and people of all ages and walks of life adding their mark to the 133 canvases which form the mural.

Many inspiring conversations of hope and support have been part of the rich experience.

It is absolutely free to participate, although a range of different sized canvasses are available for sale throughout the event.

Funds raised will grow the Say Yes Initiative and support families seeking help through a range of programs.

Community members are invited to purchase a piece for peace, as a keepsake from this heartfelt initiative.

As a pilot program this has been really successful. It's even attracted government interest with two senior officials from the Department of Communities visiting to see for themselves and hear more about this innovative and positive approach to supporting family and domestic peace.

On Thursday, the sold canvases will be distributed, along with an auction of the final canvasses, and words of wisdom accompanied by local musicians will bring the project to a close. Register your support for Say Yes and go into the draw for a raffle to win one of several canvasses.

The project has kick-started a movement that inspires positive solutions and promotes peaceful relationships throughout the country and it started right here on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Successful Gardening on The Edge

The Maleny Garden Club were pleased to have approximately 800 people enjoying looking at our a magnificent open gardens on the sunny Saturday and a further 400 braved a windy and cold Sunday to enjoy the open gardens this year.

Andrew Powell MP, the Member for Glass House declared the 12th Gardening on the Edge open on Friday, June 10 in the afternoon, much to the delight of Club members who had spent the day setting up the Showground Pavilion.

Club President Marnie Trass said the best part about Gardening on the Edge is the community involvement. To be involved in the satisfaction and pleasure shared by the garden owners, garden club members and visitors.

“We are all volunteers and work very hard together to achieve a result that the hinterland community can be proud of,” she said.

“Visitors were treated to gardens ranging from having fabulous vistas over the hills and valley towards Montville and Flaxton, to perfectly manicured lawns, hedges, with statuary and groves of trees in a peaceful setting, to working nurseries with magnificent views over the Glasshouse Mountains.

“There were bucolic farmyard views, another with inspired landscaping from places where the owners had lived and travelled to, gardens set up for pleasure and entertainment (which they did on the weekend and was enjoyed by the CWA), and a smaller area recreated, bringing familiar plantings from a farm to a new place in the town,” said Marnie.

“The beginning of winter is a time for the gardens to rest and recharge themselves for the magic that is Spring, each garden had that effect on those who saw them.

“This year the camellias were not at their best due to a dry summer, nevertheless the display inside the Showground Pavilion was very much appreciated by everyone, highlighted by the display left on the stage from the Maleny Show featuring the Teddy Bears Picnic,” Marnie said.

After expenses, approximately $20,000.00 will be distributed among properly registered organisations in the Range community as determined by the Garden Club members at the next meeting.

To date over $250,000.00 (in today’s dollars) has been given back to the Community from proceeds since the Club was formed in September 1952 and approximately $90,000.00 since the inception of Gardening on the Edge.

When someone is angry it is often difficult for others to know how to handle it.

Some people go very quiet when they are angry and this can make it harder for others to notice, but the trouble is that these people have a tendency to let things build up and then they explode over something minor – their response seems out of proportion with the issue at hand.

This often means that they have been angry for a while and not done anything about it.

With other people it is much easier to identify when they are angry because they are aggressive and sometimes abusive.

This however can bring pain to those around them – including loved ones who sometimes are subjected to years of heartache.

The bible says in Proverbs 15:18 ‘A hottempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel’.

When it rings it tells us that there is something wrong. It could be a deep hurt that has been triggered; it could be a sense of injustice or humiliation. Sometimes people don’t really know why they are angry or when anger will strike next.

An appropriate way to handle anger, is to stop and realise what is happening and try and make some sense of it. Then we need to find a positive way forward – talking to someone who can help is a good start (e.g. work place issue: go and talk to a trusted supervisor). We all know that anger which turns into abuse of others can cause a lot of pain for everyone.

The good news is that we can get help and work through the issues. A good counsellor can guide a person through the painful parts of their life that cause anger and help them find some peace.

I believe God wants to help us become a whole person who isn’t controlled by fear and anger. If we pray to God about this stuff he will help us.

Sport Maleny Superintendent collects top industry award Passion, skill, dedication and hard work continue to pay off for Maleny Golf Club Superintendent Mick McCombe who collected Australia’s top gong for Excellence in Golf Course Management at an industry dinner in Melbourne last week.

Having won the Queensland Golf Course Superintendents’ Achievement Award in March, Mick was nominated by the Club for the national Award for Excellence. This required submission by the club of documented evidence to meet the Australian Golf Course Superintendents’ Association’s (AGCSA) criteria.

The award, which honours the turf industrys outstanding achievers, is judged on criteria including commitment to excellence, maintenance and turfgrass management techniques, innovation, community engagement and outcomes.

Mick was up against Superintendents from some of the best and most exclusive courses in the country and now stands alongside previous winners representing a veritable ‘who’s who’ of the Australian golf course maintenance industry.

The judges commended the key leadership role that Mick played during the construction phase and with a budget of less than $750,000 for full construction of the first nine holes.

The award, which includes a $5,000 bursary to fund further education or an approved study tour, was presented in Melbourne at the AGCSA’s annual Turfgrass Industry Conference dinner attended by 300 delegates and guests.

On accepting his award Mick acknowledged the unqualified support he had received from committee members including President Dr Max Whitten and Greens Chairman Rob Bailo since taking on the daunting challenge in September 2014.

"This award is owed to the long term vision of the club and its board of directors and I also want to thank our fantastic team of volunteers who’ve enabled us to achieve such a high standard of presentation,” he said.

Dr Whitten said the award recognised Mick’s insight in interpreting the design by golf architect Graham Papworth, diverse operating skills and ability to manage and motivate volunteers who helped build and then maintain the nine-hole course.

“This is a fantastic achievement and a great outcome also for Graham Papworth, the Club, our Project Manager and Vice-President Rod Richards RPEQ, the Management Committee and all our volunteers,” he said.

“Mick McCombe has played a pivotal role in translating a weed-ridden and largely abandoned dairy farm into an operating golf course which is now receiving high praise from both members and visitors alike.”

Dr Whitten said Mick’s prowess as an A-grade golfer and ability to operate dry-hired earthmoving machinery had proved to be valuable attributes.

“Above all his personal capacity to work with and motivate volunteers and contractors has played a huge part in constructing a good golf course in a short time frame and with a modest budget,” he said.

Mick said he was now looking forward to starting construction of the second nine holes at Maleny.

Prior to taking on the role of Course Superintendent at Maleny, Mick was the Course Foreman at Headland Golf Club, Buderim, and during a 15-year industry career gained international experience at Coombe Hill Golf Club in London.

San Taekwondo recently welcomed a new black belt to the club after their term two grading held last Friday night at the Beerwah full-time training centre.

Josh Collins, aged 12, graded to the rank of Cho Dan Bo (club-level black belt) after four years of training. Josh graded along with around 35 other club members and had to perform a series of traditional patterns, demonstrate kicking techniques and defences against various attacks, break timber, and spar the other senior members and black belts of the club. Josh will now have to train for one year before he is eligible to grade for his 1st Dan black belt which will be issued from the Kukkiwon in Korea and recognised worldwide.

Josh has been a great student and has grown more mature as well as developed his self-control and perseverance throughout his Taekwondo journey. All the instructors are proud that he has achieved this rank. He was also awarded the medal for the best performance on the night by a blue or red belt. Poppy Ives was awarded the best grading for a yellow or white belt.

San Taekwondo welcomes new Black Belt

Pennant teams are up in the shed office. Round 1 starts this Saturday, July 2. It’s great that we have spare players this year and won’t be over stretched. Remember a new club shirt needs to be purchased for pennants. A lot of members already have them. If you don’t have one, you can purchase them from our club office.

Our quarterly meeting went well on Saturday with 23 members turned up, pity there were not a few more. We will be organising a special meeting next month to determine what comps our club will take part in next year. There are four options - Hinterland Local League, Super Challenge, Sevens and Gr8 Bowls Challenge.

Another issue is we need more members to start helping out on our board. We have the bowlers, but without a board there is no club. We also need umpires. If you think you may be interested please approach the board for more details.

Wednesday, June 22 - Anne Devane won last week’s Ladies 9-Hole Stableford competition with a terrific score of 25 points - 7 shots better than her handicap. Runner-up was Mo Lawrence who could have been excused for thinking that her score of 19 points might be good enough to win.

Thursday, June 23 - John Pottage won our 9-Hole Stableford Medley with a score of 19 points on a countback from Jan Johnston.

Saturday, June 25 - wind was up and the temperature plummeted for the Men’s Monthly Medal generously sponsored by Maleny Property Rentals and run off the Blue Tees.

Our A Grade winner was Jan Johnston who carded a net 66 with Bill Reynolds the runner-up on net 69. Richard Owen won the B Grade medal with a net score of 67 while Paul Viertel was the runner-up on net score of 71. Nearest the pin honours went to Alan Ward on the 3rd/12th hole and Peter Gilbert on the 5th/14th.

Tuesday’s proposed Twilight Challenge was cancelled and there was no play Wednesday evening because of the State of Origin Rugby League Match brilliantly won by Queensland.

However, there was a great roll-up of 24 players for Scroungers Friday. Seven rinks were played and the respective winners were - Melita Gesch, Miles Allen, Scott Alexander, Cameron Wilson, Warwick Moody, Don Ginns and Rob Norris. The only Member present and so able to claim her Sponsors’ Prize was new member Relma Godfrey who won Simon Moore of Watsons’ Garage Prize.

The lucky Money Board winners were Jim King and Doug McGufficke.

Saturday the first round of the Club Singles Championships, in both Ladies and Men’s, were contested. There were only two Matches in the Ladies. In the morning, Jane Burgess accounted for Carol Cook and in the afternoon Margaret Ginns defeated Lucy Oldfield. Jane and Margaret will now meet in the Final.

There were 56 ladies who played on the day, however not all were competing in the Championships. The Daily competition was sponsored by lady golfers Sharon Phillips and Carol Cork and we thank them for their generosity.

Results of the daily competition were Division 1 (0-27) winner Monica Dangerfield with a great 73 nett and runner up was Dawn Webster 75 nett.

Division 2 (28-45) winner was Carol Fraser 77 nett and the runner up was Michelle Wormwell 79 nett.

NTP’s were 2 Monica Dangerfield, 5 Jenny Kelly, 16 Barb McIntosh and 2nd shot on 18 Andrea Campbell. The ball rundown went to 80.

Beerwah Ladies welcome new members, beginner players and visitors to join them in their

and Ian Hansen over Miles Allen. This last match almost provided somewhat of a surprise result as new bowler Miles lead the 2015 Singles Champion 19 shots to 12 and looked to be headed for victory. However Hansen was able to regroup and scraped home 25 shots to 23.

In the afternoon matches, Joe Walters went through to the next round by way of a forfeit, Curly Petersen defeated Doug McGufficke, Graeme Glover beat Brett Gillis and Jim King after being well down made a great come-back to nudge out David Austin. The second round has to be played on or by Saturday, July 2. As the first round of the Men’s Pairs is also scheduled for Saturday, some Matches may have to be played mid-week. If this is the case, please let our Men’s President. Allan Cook, know of your arrangements. Remember if you are playing Singles you need to organise a Marker.

San Members Fight at Caboolture Open

San Taekwondo members, including new black belt Josh, competed at the Caboolture Open last weekend. The team of 10 fighters coached by Kasia Bartnikowska and Cameron Taylor had another successful day coming home with five gold, three silver and two bronze medals in the sparring division, and also won two silver medals in the high-kick competition.

A few notable performances were from blue belt Joey Mortimer who fought up in the red belt division and took the fight to sudden death overtime and Ted Langley who made his debut and came home with a silver medal losing by only one point.
