Hi Everyone Just thought I should let you all know that this is a historic edition of GCNews. While GCNews has been published now for nearly 26 years, there has never been an edition date of Wednesday, February 29 and there won’t be another one until 2040.

I know that is the kind of trivia that really impresses some people – me on the other hand I was more interested in finding out if we would be able to get one of our lady readers to run with the idea of a ‘Leap Year Proposal’ but no luck on that front.

I guess it just means these days women who are happy to propose to their fellas, don’t feel they have to wait until February 29 and if they are sick of waiting for the bloke to get organised, then they definitely shouldn’t have to wait around until a leap year!

This week we have included a ‘Wedding Feature’ which showcases many local businesses that offer a wide range of wedding services – it may just encourage a few more potential brides to get their blokes moving along.

So if you are planning a wedding sometime soon, make sure you pull the guide out and keep it – it is great that we do have so many wedding professionals in our community, so make sure you check them out first before heading outside of the area.

Brazen bottleshop burglary In the early hours of last Wednesday morning, in less time than it takes to enjoy a cup of coffee, brazen thieves managed to rip open security bars across the entrance to Glass House Bottlemart, and within minutes escape with more than $5,000 of stock.

Beerwah Hotel manager Steven Holmes said police are now investigating the matter, which was captured on CCTV footage.

The attack was carried out by seven or eight individuals, who were wearing hoodies and t-shirts over their heads and gloves and socks on their hands in an attempt to avoid being recognised.

He said a witness had told police that the thieves took off in two vehicles, thought to be a 4WD and a sedan.

Steven said the incident was very frustrating.

in the past, such as dealing with the roadworks, and this latest incident is just another blow,” he said.

“We’ve not only lost $5,150 in stock, there’s also the damage done to the shop and the day’s lost trade to clean it all up.”

Steven said he spent more than 16 hours in the shop the following day, cleaning up the mess left by the thieves and doing a stocktake.

A spokesperson from Beerwah Police Station said officers from the Landsborough station had attended the incident, which is now being investigated. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Currently 98 per cent of schools employing a Scripture Union (S) School Chaplain in Queensland have chosen to retain their chaplain rather than pursue the secular option.

SU Qld is currently anticipating employing another 100 – 150 Chaplains in schools across Queensland and our local chaplaincy committee (with great assistance from High School Principal Graham Trevenen) is currently exploring the possibility of employing a chaplain for our local primary schools.

RSL officially reopens

Heavy rain did not stop the official reopening of Beerwah RSL last Thursday, by State MP, Mark McArdle.

Looking at the smiles on the faces of the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch members and guests, the weather certainly did not dampen their spirits.

Nearly a year on since the club closed, it seems that the Sub-branch have been able to achieve what many in the community doubted they could.

Mark McArdle said the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub Branch Club was a very important part of the community and he was very pleased it had re-opened.

"The dedication and determination from the Club's selfless volunteers and members has enabled it to relaunch, and for that they should be very proud

Brisbane for the event, was most impressed with the transformation of the building from a gutted shell to the revitalised venue.

Following the official part of the day there was a morning tea served for around 100 members and guests, including a number of local business people who attended.

$2,000 grant for new festival A new festival for Glasshouse Country is one step closer with the receipt of a $2,000 grant to develop the concept.

Last year we reported that a working group, under the Rotary umbrella, was working on a plan for an unusual week-long festival where participants can immerse themselves in courses and workshops. It will be similar to a summer school (but in the spring school holidays 2013) with courses for everyone who enjoys new learning experiences, whatever their age. A festival atmosphere will be created with evening concerts, markets and art show etc.

The working group is happy to receive any comments, suggestions or help you might like to offer. In particular they are on a hunt for a consultant who can fulfill the grant requirements, which are outlined in the following: ‘The project goal is the development a concept plan for an inaugural 'pleasure of learning festival' in September 2013. The project will involve intense community consultation, surveys and studies, as guided by a professional consultant, to evaluate the social and economic strengths and weaknesses of hosting a two to five day festival. The plan will include such things as the preferred types of courses, acceptable pricing strategies, likely groups of participants, budgeting scenarios and suggested marketing strategies.’

“This is such an exciting idea. If Glasshouse Country can pull it off it will be the biggest event we have ever seen,” said Francis. “It will be an opportunity for all residents to get involved, whether attending courses, working overtime in the cafes and restaurants or volunteering in the organisation.”

Local couple receive ‘belated’ award

A Glasshouse couple have had a Fisher Australia Day Award presented to them belatedly, by Member for Fisher Peter Slipper.

John and Lynelle Schrader have together notched up considerable years of service to the Glasshouse RSL Sub Branch. But they were away on a road trip on Australia Day and unable to attend the awards ceremony.

John and Lynelle Schrader with They were recognised recently for their service by Mr Slipper, at a Member for Fisher Peter Slipper function at the Glasshouse RSL. Mr Schrader has been Treasurer of the Glasshouse RSL for six years, is the coordinator of the raffle roster, works in the kitchen as a cook on Friday nights, and is a handyman who looks after all maintenance at the organisation’s premises.

Lynelle is a member of the Glass House Country Citizens Auxiliary; she assists with co-ordinating the Friday night kitchen roster and also works the kitchen; she co-ordinates special events like the Graham Rogers concert, trivia nights and garage sales, and she helps sell raffle tickets.

Mr and Mrs Schrader spend up to 30 hours each week working for the Glasshouse RSL sub-branch and supporting the needs of local veterans.

The Schraders were among 42 local voluntary community workers and groups who were presented with accolades for their efforts at the 13th annual Fisher Community Australia Day Awards held last month.

Demonstrators evening for local businesses Beerwah Kindy is opening its doors for a night of product demonstrations and networking next Thursday, March 8. The evening will give local businesses the opportunity to come along, talk about and present their products to local kindy families, friends and networks.

Local businesses are being encouraged to participate in the evening. There is no cost to have a stand, however the kindy is asking for a prize donation to assist with future fundraising activities. The evening is open for the general public to come along, for a gold coin donation,

Focus on Beerwah

Beerwah residents and Council officers have started to come together in focus groups to evaluate the comprehensive feedback from Council’s Stage 1 engagement activities with the people of Beerwah.

This work will produce the Beerwah PLACE+ Action Plan, which will put forward a range of ideas and initiatives for growing a bright future in Beerwah.

Late last year, hundreds of people filled out feedback forms, attended workshops or responded to mail outs and advertisements in the paper.

Community feedback from these Stage 1 engagement activities has been collated into the following themes for focus group attention: Themes 1. Robust Economy: matters of business, trade, industry and jobs.

2. Ecological Sustainability: natural and built environment, preservation and development.

3. Innovation and Creativity: creative and cultural spaces, programs, events, and activities.

4.

Health and Wellbeing: issues of safety, security, health and wellbeing.

5. Social Cohesion: a civic heart and inclusive spaces.

6. Accessibility and Connectedness: connection and access to, from, in, and around Beerwah.

Many people have already volunteered to take part in the focus groups, but if you’d like to have your say there is still time.

You can register to participate in a focus group by calling 5441 8655. Once the focus groups complete their work a draft Action Plan will be presented to the wider community for feedback.

What is the PLACE+ program?

The Place+ program is about creating the Sunshine Coast’s future.

It focuses on Council and communities working together to make great places on the Sunshine Coast even better.

Beerwah is the first place to benefit from this program, which covers a range of issues including infrastructure, business and community development.

Former GCCC student becomes a Dean Scholar Contributed by Rob Hill, maths/science teacher

Joshua Davis graduated from Glasshouse Country Christian College a couple of months ago and has already completed his first year of university!

Joshua was accepted Deputy principal Tanya as a Dean Scholar at the with Joshua Davis Queensland University of Technology. This is an incredibly difficult honour to attain and is only awarded to a few students each year.

To be accepted for the scholarship, Joshua was put through his paces by the University by having to complete the equivalent of the first year of his degree course compressed into a demanding six weeks of summer school. Joshua passed this successfully and now looks forward to starting ‘year two’ in late February!

Last week, the University held a reception for parents and friends of those students who had been accepted into the program. Mr Tony Davis and Mrs Judy Davis were thrilled to be present to see their son receive his certificate of acceptance into the course and hear the Dean congratulate all the students on their outstanding achievement and outline the many special opportunities available to members of the scholarship with international businesses that are sponsoring the program.

Joshua was GCCC’s captain in 2011 and the College staff, students and families are very proud of his incredible achievement.

Sun safety at Peachester school

Cr Anna Grosskreutz paid a visit to Peachester State School before the Christmas break to officially announce the opening of the new shade shelter cover for the senior playground. Previously a beautiful camphor laurel tree had provided sun protection, however sadly it had to be removed due to safety issues.

Sunshine Coast Council provided $30,000 of divisional funding for the construction of the 10m x 10m solid steel structure, along with funds from Peachester School P and C. It is now a playground that can be used in all conditions, and most importantly protects our children from the harsh Australian sun. Thank you to Cr Grosskreutz for the much-needed funding; being a small school it is a challenge to raise major funding such as this. We also thank Cr Grosskreutz for taking the time out of her busy schedule to visit and share in a morning tea with Peachester students and see first-hand the playground in use.

Beerwah students learn about themselves In the week beginning Monday, February 6, all students in Years 4 - 7 participated in the Aus Identities Program held at Beerwah State School.

The program was led by Steve Roach from Stanley River Environmental Education Centre who is a trained facilitator of the program.

Aus Identities is a program of self-awareness which was originally created to empower school teachers across Australia to create more inclusive and harmonious educational experiences. Since the creation of the program it has developed into a powerful means for students to understand that people have different personalities and to recognise their own learning style.

During the morning, students identified their personality type through a series of questions then related these to the character of popular, well known characters in films. Students then worked in groups with other students identified, with similar learning styles, to construct a tower.

This program will give all students opportunity to build self esteem, understand their unique identity and to help in accessing their potential.

Environmental sustainability and community

On Thursday, February 9, I was honoured to introduce special world speaker, Nicole Foss, to the Sunshine Coast as a guest of Transition Nambour.

Nicole and the group provided an excellent presentation and event at The Big Pineapple, Sunshine Coast Queensland, where she found herself addressing her largest crowd ever on her international speaking circuit.

Being the launch of her national tour and inspiring an audience of hundreds, Nicole's talk with Q&A Session had moments where you could hear a pin drop with attendees on the edge of their seats, hanging onto every word of her prescription for an improved future.

I, for one, left astounded, informed, equipped and enthused to take the next step in multiple initiatives for the betterment of our region in terms of environmental sustainability aligned with my passion for 'people place and prosperity'.

Re: the recent set of ground rules on letters appearing in GCNews on the election.

This is necessary for accountability if nothing else. Wouldn't it be wonderful if letters could be free of the plain nastiness that passes for political comment. When short on facts just throw in Anna Bligh's name or Julia Gillard's in derogatory terms and apparently the facts are neither here nor there. So how about it readers, let's have a little more accountability and a lot less of the maunderings of cranky old men.

A personal recommendation

I have had the pleasure of knowing Ann Ross for more years than I can count, both professionally and as a very dear and loyal friend.

I have watched firstly a young mother working within the Education Department fulfilling her need to expand and grow both personally and professionally.

Running an environmental gardening program on her own time within school hours, she expanded this and furthered her own education in her spare time. Having two young children, a husband and a business to help run, this certainly wasn’t any small task.

With her heart and mind set on what is needed and what is right Ann has the ability to never let anything stop her. Her children have both throughout their lives been nurtured with this in mind and have gone on to become outstanding members of our community, one a specialised engineer and the other a doctor. Her husband Jeffs’ reputation as a business owner has gained him a strong client base and his involvement on a number of local committees substantiates his ideal to get in there and help, support or when necessary lead.

Over more recent years I have witnessed Ann’s growth in many directions, writing historical books, articles, documenting and archiving much of Bankfoot House, studied Business degrees and learnt all she can to aim for the role of local Councillor.

If you are looking for a representative who will give everything they have for the community, for our environment and for the youth and aged in this area, Ann is the one. If you want someone who will represent us with honesty and integrity, drive and ability, Ann is definitely the one.

Make your choice count, support Ann. I certainly will be.

Coming State Election

Guess who Brian Stallworthy doesn’t like?

Either it is Labor or perhaps it is powerful women or both. Brian asks eight questions in his letter most of which he could answer himself if he made the effort because it is available on public record. Yes, the Premier should have been able to look into the future and not been on leave at the time! Like most people however who were affected by the floods and cyclone I found our premiers response to be spot on something even her political opponents agreed on. She impressed and she showed her great breadth of knowledge of the facts as well as her compassion. I don’t think Brian should be concerned about the opposition not getting publicity. The Courier Mail has for months given time and space to the apparent virtues of the opposition leader and have practically delivered him the winner which is probably why Brian feels 'he is an honest and caring type.' Remember that previous election when they had practically declared Lawrence Springborg the new premier? Perhaps they may be wrong again.

Beerburrum Hall Says Thank You

Beerburrum School of Arts Association Incorporated (Beerburrum Hall) recently tried two events to help increase our memberships and awareness about our hall. These events were 1) Are you a member pamphlet dropped in Beerburrum residence post boxes and 2) A letter published in Glasshouse Country News. We have had an excellent response with new members, donations and regular hall hirers. We would like to say thank you to Beerburrum Post Office for

delivering the ‘Are you a Member’ pamphlet and Glasshouse Country News for publishing our letter. A special thank you goes out to those who read the publications and responded.

New memberships are greatly appreciated as it helps keep such a great part of our history within the community. It was excellent to receive new members and it is nice to know the community spirit still exists. Re: Voting Options GCNews February 22

I am a previous (due to moving) Returning Officer for both State and Local Government Elections and there are issues people do not realise about the two different voting systems for Local Government Elections. ‘First Past the Post’ (FPTP) and ‘Optional Preferential Voting’ (OPV).

1: The majority of Councils that use the FPTP system have a much smaller population than the Sunshine Coast.

2: FPTP system for Council means that there would be no divisional boundaries and you would need to vote for all the councillors, which would be voting 1 to 12 on a ballot paper that could have 50+ names on it. This is not simple to count the votes.

It is possible that the elected councillors could come from a heavily populated area and therefore no representation from your local area.

How would you like all the councillors to come from Caloundra or Maroochydore areas and none from the hinterland?

3: Most Candidates prefer FPTP as they think it is simpler and or they need fewer votes, as they only need the most votes between all the candidates, and not 50 per cent +1 of the votes. For example for Mayor, there are five Candidates, 5,001 votes made, four candidates’ get 1,000 votes each and one candidate gets 1,001, the candidate with 1,001 votes wins, even though almost 80 per cent did not vote for that candidate. Is this really how you want to be represented?

4: Optional Preferential Voting means just that.

You have the option of voting for one candidate or two or more candidates by placing in the order of your choice. This means the winning candidate needs 50 per cent +1 of the votes including preferences for the division representing your area.

Thoughtless prejudice?

In a recent letter in GCNews Brian Stallworthy displayed cynicism and prejudice against the Labor Party, accusing Premier Bligh of playing centre stage during the 2011 floods.

When in truth she performed with strength and compassion.

After many cynical comments about Ms Bligh, Mr Stallworthy then calls the Leader of the Opposition (not in Parliament) 'an honest and caring type', 'full-on and genuine'.

Thoughtless prejudice is no substitute for proper argument.

Decision should be overturned

From whichever of the current local government candidates who gets into council, I would like to know what their intention is in relation to this absolute waste of ratepayers’ monies that our present Councillor has wasted for us, being the $500,000 that Council has agreed to spend on the ‘footpath’ fiasco to Australia Zoo - from Beerwah to Landsborough?

Why do we even need the footpath when a perfectly good free bus service is supplied for visitors to the Zoo? There was no mention of how these ‘walkers’ were expected to get under or over the Railway Line? And where did that road come from …? Oh yes, Steve Irwin Way also has to be crossed as well. I haven’t heard any mention of bridges?

The Sunshine Coast Council will possibly have four or five new members after these forthcoming 4 elections and a new Mayor.

So why can't we have this matter ‘overturned’ or is it like the Beerwah Sportsground fiasco, prior to the last elections when Beerwah missed out on one million dollars because our Councillor wasn’t in attendance at the meeting when the decision was made.

I am a ratepayer and I vote.

Commitment to National Parks under question

Andrew Powell (GCNews February 22) accuses me and Labor of increasing the National Park Estate solely to gain green preferences.

By that logic I could accuse him of the same thing. Where his letter contains many negative derogatory words against Labor, my letter (GCNews February 8) in a factual way, lists Labor's achievements. I did not 'crow' about these. My incorrect reference to ‘trails as bike trails’ is my lie, not Labor’s. I misread his previous press release, and for that I apologise.

I will not use put-down language against the other side to make my point.

Ed’s Note A hallowed find indeed!

In GCNews Letters on February 8, Peachester resident Ted Prickett asked readers if they could help shed some light on a hollow log he had unearthed. Thanks to Peter Dellaway from Bells Creek who told us that it was his father, Harold Dellaway, who owned the farm where the timber log bridge came from. Harold’s Place, where Ted found the log, was named after Harold Dellaway.

Peter, who lives at Bells Creek Road, said his father bought the farm at Peachester in 1943.

It was a dairy farm at the time, and a creek ran through it, so Harold had put down the logs to act as a bridge to get his tractor and equipment across it.

“I have decided to shave my head completely and go back to skin. This brings comments of surprise from most when they hear about it, given the potential discomfort I may face either as my hair regrows or from reactions to my newly bald head.

“However, whatever discomfort I will go through is nothing compared to what sufferers of leukaemia go through,” Julie said.

“This is my way of giving something back for them in the hope that better treatments and services can be funded and discovered.”

Beerwah’s Julie Grange knows better than most what patients go through when being treated for leukaemia.

As a registered nurse, for 16 years Julie not only cared for people undergoing treatment for leukaemia, she also had a close friend and colleague diagnosed, and watched her go through the rollercoaster that was her life while receiving chemotherapy.

Two years ago, Julie’s father was also diagnosed with leukaemia, a chronic form known as CMML. “It amazes me the inner strength that people find when they are faced with battles and challenges such as this,” Julie said.

our guided walk. This, of course, is ideal rainforest weather and the fungi were out in force; every shape and colour known to man (or woman as in our case). John, our guide, was most informative and we learnt much about the rainforest, its habitat and animals. Thanks John for a great morning out.

The next View Club outing will be held on Wednesday, March 7 where we will depart from Ferryman Cruise Point on Bribie Island at 11.15am for a three hour cruise along the Pumistone Passage including a cold buffet lunch.

Husbands are welcome to join us on this trip.

We have had dogs in Glasshouse Country Uniting Church before with Rev George Woodward, so we were thrilled a few Sundays ago when Rev Bev Ham who was talking about ‘Belonging to Families’ bought her puppy along to church to illustrate being part of her ‘family’ and also part of God's Wider Family.

2012 Youth of the Year This is a close up look at some of our future leaders in the community and what a credit they all are.

Beerwah Lions Club’s section of the annual National Australia Bank sponsored Youth of The Year competition was held at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on February 22 with Lion Justin Neubecker co-ordinating the evening events. During the evening a very nice meal was provided by the Sports Club staff.

With some 43 people, including school principal Graham Trevenen and wife Sue, Kath Bateman the school YOY co-ordinator and students present (even including some grandparents from Durban in Africa) this was a very memorable occasion for all involved.

The Beerwah winners will go on to compete at Lions Regional level in Caloundra, then on to Lions Q3 district, state and national levels in Perth in May. Many former Youth of the Year entrants go on to bigger things; Kevin Rudd, Peter Beattie, and one of ours in Rhys Reynolds, contesting a Division 1 Council position.

Landsborough Hall issues a call for help!

Beerwah High contestants were Alix Murdock, Travis Bosch, Phoebe Slater, Connor Bosch, Rae Austin and Mana Taripo. With thanks to Kath Bateman they had apparently previously been selected by an in school competition of 12 students.

Students had been interviewed by the judges during the day, this represents 80 per cent of the points scored and the public speaking part in the evening is just 20 per cent of the overall score.

At the evening session, each were asked two impromptu questions and allowed up to two minutes to respond to each. They gathered their thoughts very quickly and talked. Just consider how you would respond to these following impromptu questions, ‘Does the media e.g. TV, newspapers, have too much influence on our society?’, and ‘Mining our resources is booming at present – what are the benefits and are there any concerns for future generations?’

Following on from the impromptu section, the students spoke for five minutes on their prepared speeches.

With the judges deliberations eventually complete the winners were announced. Congratulations to the Public Speaking winner, Travis Bosch and congratulations to the overall Youth of The Year winner, Rae Austin.

With its AGM next week, the Landsborough School of Arts Hall committee is calling on members of the public to come forward and help keep the hall going as a vibrant and well used part of the community.

It’s been a busy year for The Landsborough School of Arts Hall committee and the Hall, with some structural repairs, thanks to assistance from a group of volunteers from the Masonic Lodge and local builder Phil Bundesen.

Hall highlights include the weekly Saturday markets, which are now in their fourth year, and generate much needed funds for ongoing maintenance.

The ‘Down Under’ Craft Group meets every Wednesday morning and the ladies have contributed greatly, by making craft items for sale at the craft shop, which is open most Saturday mornings. The convenor of the group, Shirley Ruhle, is to be congratulated for her tireless efforts in raising funds towards not only the hall, but also her role in organising the annual Morning Tea for Cancer held at the hall.

Market convenors Linda and Bernie took over the role of hall booking officers when Lyn Bidwell retired, and there is now a Facebook page with booking information and photos.

The Hall is also used regularly by a number of groups including Zumba, Hinterland Fitness, Tae Quon Do and Lodge meetings, and more.

Throughout the year, the Hall committee has also received much assistance from divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz, and a special thanks to long term committee member Alf Unwin, who has helped with a number of jobs, and keeps the hedges trimmed.

Since the Hall was formally opened in 1927 it has been cared for by various groups of volunteers who make up the committee, and oversee the letting and management of the Hall. The Hall is a vibrant well used community asset and we need your help to maintain it and keep it going.

The AGM will be held at the hall on Thursday, March 8 at 7.00pm. Membership is open to anyone interested in seeing the hall continue to provide a site for gatherings and community events in Landsborough. Membership is only $5.00 per year, and the monthly meetings are generally held on the first Thursday of the month at 7.00pm.

Last Wednesday the Hospitality students at Beerwah High catered for a very special breakfast for the School Chaplain Mike Turner to say thanks to his many local supporters.

On Saturday, March 10 from 9.00am - 3.00pm, members of the Blackall Range Woodcrafters’ Guild Inc, will open the doors of their magnificent headquarters on the Maleny Road for an open day.

There’ll be tours and demonstrations of wood carving, turning, pyrography and slabbing.

The operation of some of the sophisticated and unusual machinery e.g. the woodwiz, routers and various sized bandsaws are not to be missed.

A very popular demonstration is the slabbing and milling of tree trunks, where visitors will be invited to order slabs to size and thickness.

The sale of used tools in good working order is one of the highlights, and these will be on display and for sale from 9.00am. Food will be available, and there will be a chocolate wheel with valuable woodcraft prizes. Free entry.

FREE mountain bike orienteering event To support Bike Week 2012 the Sunshine Orienteer's Club is holding a FREE 'Come And Try It' mountain bike orienteering event in the Beerburrum State Forest on Saturday, March 10.

Stan Griffith Caloundra Catholic Parish During the week I attended two funerals. Both were attended by large numbers of friends and relatives of the deceased. Both were remembrance services of people who died before what could be considered a long and fulfilled life.

The first was a woman of 48 years, the daughter of close and dear friends. I had known her from her earliest years and had seen her grow into a lovely and mature woman. She had a keen intellect, a thirst for knowledge, and the ability to use fully the rich source of natural talents that were hers.

She had reached the top of the tree in her chosen profession and had developed the skill to teach others from her wide experience. She had married and had a long loving relationship with her husband of over 20 years. They have a daughter just reaching her late teens and who is about to find her feet in the wider world. She was in that time in life when she could, after all her hard work, start to relax and really enjoy the years ahead of her as she continued to travel, to be involved with her many friends and look forward perhaps to sharing the joys of being a grandmother. Now all this has been taken from her.

This young woman was struck down with breast cancer. As her family gathered around her death bed and they realised that death was imminent, her sister asked the question "Why?" It's one we

all ask from time to time when faced with similar situations. Where, we ask, is the justice in all this?

If there is a just and loving God how can these tragic events occur? Why is there so much pain and suffering in the world if there is an all seeing all knowing being we call God? I'm afraid I do not know the answer. At times like this all we can do is be with those who are suffering, and share their pain and grief. After all, we too will experience that same loss and pain ourselves one day. It is part of being human, to face up to and accept our mortality.

At times like these I am reminded of what St Paul wrote to his friend Timothy. He was an old man at the time, a prisoner of the Emperor, and knew he had only a short time to live. He writes, ‘The time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now all there is laid up for me is the crown of righteousness that the Lord, the just judge, will reward me on that day; and not only me, but all those who long for his coming.’

It is words such as these that, while not giving a total answer to the WHY, do give a measure of comfort in our desperation.

Couples can either ask a pastor to marry them or engage the services of a registered civil marriage celebrant (please ensure your civil marriage celebrant is registered).

While there are many celebrants to choose from, each one has their own special interest and personality.

Choose your celebrant with care as you are entrusting this person to create and conduct one of the most treasured and important ceremonies of your life.

A good celebrant will conduct ceremonies where the couple and their guests feel enriched. They will have a passion for what they do, care about the role they play and will feel strongly about the importance of marriage. They will incorporate your values and beliefs and work with you in creating an outstanding ceremony that reflects your vision for the day.

A couple should speak to the marriage celebrant as soon as they have set a date as legally the paperwork has to be done at least one month before the actual date. You may meet with a number of Celebrants before choosing the one that is right for you.

Once a couple has chosen a celebrant, a meeting is arranged so that they can get to know each other and discuss the couple’s ideas for their special day. The celebrant may also provide them with a ceremony guide that includes examples of vows, verses and readings, as well as information on how to write their own vows, if they wish to do so.

It’s best to have someone with experience and someone you feel completely comfortable with.

This year’s event at the Amamoor Creek State Forrest comes complete with a custom built chapel and an on-hand celebrant.

The custom built chapel will be installed at the event’s site for the duration of the festival with couples interested in sharing their love over the music festivities required to register their interest prior to the event. Bookings for the chapel will be on a first come, first served basis with several nuptials and renewals expected to take place between August 23 and 26.

2. Seek permission first: An applicant must have approval from the body corporate before bringing or keeping a pet within a scheme. Doing this without permission can ruin your chances for negotiating further down the track.

3. The body corporate must be fair and reasonable: A refusal to grant permission for a pet should be based on consideration of the wellbeing of the animal, not the owner (e.g. refusing to grant approval to house a miniature pony in a three-storey walk up is reasonable).

4. Check clauses in your lease agreement: Clauses could already be available in your lease for you to challenge the body corporate or landlord.

5. Check with the owner: Before you go to the body corporate, you must first have agreement from the landlord. Remind your landlord of the tenant market they are missing out on by excluding pet owners.

Buyers and tenants are not aware of their rights when it comes to having pets, says a leading property expert from The Investors Club. The Investors Club manages over 17,000 properties Australia-wide, and says buyers can easily challenge draconian measures to completely ban pets; they just need to be well briefed on council rules and enter negotiations with the spirit of compromise.

“By-laws that prevent an owner or tenant from keeping any animal, even something as inoffensive as a single goldfish, are unduly and not reflective of Australia’s love for animals. Tenants and buyers need to be aware that bodies corporate cannot absolutely prohibit the keeping of any animal in any circumstances,” said spokesperson Karen Horsfall.

However, if using a family guarantee, Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser, Teresa Harrison strongly advises borrowers to establish an exit strategy.

“However, the most important step in putting a family guarantee in place is to ensure there is an exit plan – a plan designed to release the guarantors (generally parents) from the loan to fund their child’s home as soon as possible.

This is a relief for the guarantor, who doesn’t want the burden of a 30-year loan on their property limiting their options, including the ability to sell their house.”

To exit a family guarantee, Teresa suggests having the child’s home revalued down the track to assess the property’s

equity, which can be used to release the guarantors.

“Let’s say that your son or daughter purchases a home for $400,000,” Teresa explains.

“Generally, we would look at having the property revalued in about five years’ time and, assuming it increased in value to $500,000, your child could then get an 80 per cent loan for $400,000 and you as the parent can be released from the loan.

In this example, the child now has enough equity in the property in their own right to not need the guarantee. And, as a result of the family guarantee, they have saved about $9000 in LMI (Lender’s Mortgage

Insurance) on the initial purchase.”

Although commonly used by first home buyers, Teresa says a family guarantee is a useful tool for those looking to make the move up to their second or third home, or even for buying an investment property.

F is for Furcraea Originating from tropical Americas, many species of Furcraea can now be found naturalised around the world due to escapes from commercial production or the domestic garden.

Most species come from hot dry regions and are able to survive long periods with little water.

They lend themselves well to an arid style garden.

The commonly grown species for the domestic gardener is Green Aloe (Furcraea foetida). Foetida means stinking and refers to the smell of its rotting leaves.

It is an impressive plant with a stately structure, more suited to the larger garden. A single specimen can provide a focal point or be an anchor in the middle of a garden bed.

Mass plantings are equally impressive.

More recently introduced is the cultivar F. foetida ‘Medio-picta’, a lush plant with variegated cream and green leaves. It is the one species of

Furcraea which fits into a tropical planting.

The stem can grow to about 1 - 2 metres tall with a rosette of thick fleshy leaves to 2 metres long. The leaf of F. foetida has no marginal spines though some species do.

Once the plant matures, it will develop a tall stalk resembling a giant asparagus shoot (6 - 12 metres high). It is known as a peduncle and will produce hundreds of green bulbils all of which will grow if they come into contact with moist soil.

Furcraea has been grown as a fire break and for erosion control on steep banks. It can also prove useful as a green boundary to a paddock. The peduncle can provide posts for short term huts or fencing.

Commercially, the plant has been grown for fibre production. A medium grade fibre, similar to sisal can be extracted from the leaf. It has many traditional medicinal uses, some of which are being explored by western researchers.

The sap irritates the skin, so it is advisable to wear gloves and long sleeves when handling the plant. It is also toxic to fish. Avoid dumping waste from this plant near waterways or dams.

If you do not plan to maintain the spread of this plant, as with any potential weed species, avoid planting it or remove existing ones from your garden. A good alternative is the native Gymea Lily (Doryanthes excelsa). However, if you dispose of flowering shoots and other plant waste appropriately, this is a great plant to strike a pose with in your garden.

Our native species are still the tiny price of $1.00 a tube, and vines in larger pots are a very reasonable price of $6.00.

If you have need of a gift for a child, the beautifully produced book on the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly would be a good choice.

The storyline is accurate with delightful illustrations and would appeal to all age groups. These books will be available from the plant stall for $13.00. A book accompanied by a vine is a great choice for educating children about the environment.

News in Brief Sunshine Coast Council’s current round of community grants closes tomorrow, Thursday, March 1 at 5.00pm.

Community groups can apply for a minor grant of up to $2,000 or a major grant of up to $50,000 to assist with projects which benefit Sunshine Coast communities.

Applications cannot be accepted after 5.00pm on the closing date as the online application system will close at this time.

Community groups can contact a Grants Officer for help with their application on 5441 8616.

Council cuts parking fines

Paying your parking fines for minor infringements won’t put quite as big a hole in your pocket anymore, with Council reducing fines for minor parking offences.

Following the adoption of Amendment Subordinate Local Law No. 1 (Parking) 2012 at council’s Ordinary Meeting, the following changes were agreed: • Section 106 offences (i.e. overstaying metered parking) will be reduced from $50.00 to $30.00; • Section 205 offences (i.e. overstaying regulated timed parking) will be reduced from $100.00 down to $50.00; • All other Part 12 offences of the Transport Operations (Road Use Management – Road Rules) Regulation 2009 will also be reduced from $100.00 to $75.00. These offences relate to prohibited parking such as No Standing, Loading Zones, Bus Stops etc; • Disabled offences will remain at $200.00.

Deputy Mayor Tim Dwyer said Council’s new suite of local laws and subordinate local laws came into effect on January 1and has generally been well received in the community, however there had been feedback in relation to Schedule 4 (Infringement notice penalties amounts for certain

This is a key message in Sunshine Coast Council’s new community education and awareness campaign that is working to bring responsible dog ownership sharply into focus on the Coast.

The community information campaign also aims to raise awareness about dog management regulations contained in council’s new local laws.

The laws came into effect on January 1.

Division 3 Councillor Keryn Jones said the goal of the responsible dog ownership campaign was to encourage mutual respect and understanding between people with different ideas about dogs in public and community spaces.

“The campaign is all about creating awareness and appreciation that our beautiful beaches and parks are shared spaces to be enjoyed by everyone by following some simple socially and environmentally responsible behaviour,” she said.

She said dog owners must always be responsible for their dog, even when in an off-leash area.

She said dogs should not charge up to other people or other dogs, which can be very intimidating, especially when large dogs are involved, and dogs should only be off-leash if it can be reliably controlled with voice commands.

“Carry a dog bag with you at all times when walking your dog, pick up after it, carry it with you on your walk and dispose of the bag in a bin.

It’s good manners and good for the planet,” she said.

This will apply across the Sunshine Coast area with the exception of offences relating to metered parking areas which attract a penalty of $30.00.

As the penalty units were lawfully endorsed and enacted by council from January 1, all infringements issued from this date are legitimate for that period, however if residents however feel they should not have received a fine at all, they can appeal their individual situation and council will investigate.

• Carry a doggy bag when walking your dog to pick up your dog’s faeces and dispose of it responsibly. Otherwise, fines may apply.

• Keep your dog in your yard by providing a suitable enclosure.

• Respect the neighbours. If your dog continually barks find out why and learn how to change its behaviour. Excessive barking may result in costly legal action.

• Vaccinate and worm your dog.

• Dogs are prohibited from outdoor dining areas attached to licensed food premised under the Queensland Food Act 2006 (other than assistance animals as defined under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992). Penalties may apply if breached. www.gcnews.com.au

New guide to horse riding tracks

A new guide to horse riding tracks was launched by Council at Maddock Park Recreation Area in Mooloolah last week.

Horse riders now have access to a wide range of information about where to horse ride on the Sunshine Coast in one handy guide following the launch of a new guide in Mooloolah last week.

The guide includes the location of where to park horse floats, and where to find facilities such as barbecues, toilets and taps and is the final one of a three part series – the first two guides provide information about walking trails and mountain bike riding trails.

The Guide to Horse Riding highlights both signed and unsigned trails that pass through and along council road reserves, Conservation Parks, National Parks, State Forests, Plantation Forests and on land managed by SEQ Water.

On the Sunshine Coast, signed trails suitable for horse riders are located on the Noosa North Shore, throughout the Noosa Hinterland on the Noosa Trail Network and at Ewen Maddock Dam, Dularcha Conservation Park and Mapleton National Park.

As part of the implementation of the Recreation Trail Plan, council is developing a link between Ewen Maddock Dam and Dularcha Conservation Park for use by walkers, horse riders and mountain bike riders that is expected to be completed by the end of July.
