FROM THE EDITOR IT has been a really humbling fortnight since we shared our news that we are on the lookout for new owners. With so many lovely comments, emails and heartfelt best wishes, it has been a little overwhelming but very much appreciated.

Although we haven’t actually found a buyer as yet, the response from readers and advertisers has reminded us just how important a community newspaper is to many people.

And while I might be the one that receives the compliments I am clearly not the one who is doing all of the hard work.

The whole GC&M News team is a dedicated bunch of individuals who love what they do and really enjoy being part of bringing the news to you.

Which is why it was really sad for us to recently farewell Sonia Isaacs Clark, who has been one of our writers for the past eight years.

Lea Parkes We really would have liked to have Sonia continue in her role with us but, unfortunately, since we have maintained the fortnightly status with the paper there was just not enough income to sustain all our team members.

Anyone who had the pleasure of being interviewed by Sonia over the years will be aware of her passion to get to know what makes people tick, and write stories that reflected how they felt about their interests, achievements and passions.

New partnership to combat wildlife crime

By Jack Waters IT is hoped a new partnership between Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors and Crime Stoppers Queensland will reduce wildlife crimes across the state.

Wildlife Warriors founder Terri Irwin made the partnership announcement alongside her son Robert and Crime Stoppers Queensland CEO Carmen Jenkinson at Australia Zoo on September 14.

The zoo will offer $1,000 to anyone who comes forward with information that leads to a prosecution for a wildlife crime anywhere across Queensland.

The announcement comes after Robert Irwin and his team made a harrowing discovery on the Wenlock River during their annual crocodile research work at the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve in the Cape York Peninsula.

“We saw a dead croc floating down the river which was incredibly sad to see but what made it more devastating was when we actually examined it and found a very clear gunshot straight through its head,” Robert said.

“For us, as wildlife conservationists, it’s just heartbreaking to see something like this.

“That was really the spark for us. We wanted to do something not only for [the crocodile] but the many animals every year that unfortunately suffer,” he said.

Terri Irwin said the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital continued to see an increase in wildlife crime.

“Here at our wildlife hospital we are seeing animals that have been hit by crossbows, shot or attacked,” she said.

“We just had a scrub turkey come in recently. Someone had broken its leg and spray painted it pink.

“We want to stop this and we want to see our wildlife treated with respect,” Terri said.

It’s this very reason why Terri was so excited to announce a formal partnership with Crime Stoppers Queensland.

Carmen from Crime Stoppers said wildlife crime was often overlooked, so much so that since the beginning of the year there had been only 61 reports of animal and environmental crime in Queensland.

“At Crime Stoppers we’re not hearing a lot about wildlife crime so that’s part of the impetus to announce this partnership today,” Carmen said.

The news received an outpouring of support from locals and people across the country who commended both Australia Zoo and Crime Stoppers for the initiative.

Major developments show confidence in our region

By Greg Brown Last financial year around 1,800 development applications were lodged with Sunshine Coast Council, the vast majority of which were assessed and approved.

One local development refusal that created a great deal of discussion was the application to build a Coles supermarket at Beerwah.

Although the council ultimately considered that there were too many substantial conflicts with the community standards expected under the planning scheme, the fact that Coles made the application in the first place shows its confidence in the future of Beerwah and the Glasshouse Country region.

The refusal disappointed many locals who commented that the decision was just another that showed how the council is holding back the area, not letting Beerwah develop and stopping job opportunities for locals.

A cursory understanding of the development process would show that this isn’t how the system works.

If an area is attractive for an investor, they’ll find somewhere to make their vision a reality.

And if the number of major developments currently in the pipeline is anything to go by, those in the know must consider that the southern hinterland areas are brimming with opportunity and potential.

Don’t believe me? Well, here’s a few major projects under development.

Glenview Sanad Capital is progressing its $400 million resort, tourist accommodation, water theme park and surfing wave pool application on Steve Irwin Way at Glenview.

Once operational, the 25ha complex will create 320 jobs.

Glass House Mountains A facility offering a surfing wave pool, wellness centre, paddock-to-plate food and beverage, ocean and marine protection education, learn-to-surf classes and surf coaching at the end of Johnston Road in Glass House Mountains is being assessed. If approved, the $25 million 13ha site is expected to be operational in 2023.

Beerwah Australia Zoo is progressing its development application to build a new tourist accommodation complex at the rear of the zoo, which will include 68 cabins and 40 bush camp sites, allowing more tourists to stay and experience the region.

Palmview A new significant and contemporary tourism development on Frizzo Road at Palmview will include a mix of indoor and outdoor recreation and leisure activities, low impact accommodation, cultural tourist attractions and food-based tourism facilities.

Palmview Just up the road from the above, a new caravan park is approved on Frizzo Road, with 406 caravan, glamping and RV sites, as well as including 3 hectares of open space camping.

Beerwah The Village Marketplace has been approved to build a new extension to the supermarket complex, providing more than 3,000m2 of extra retail floor space in the heart of Beerwah and 118 new car parks.

Glenview The Glenview par 3 golf course sold earlier this year to the G’day Group (a $1 billion holiday park provider that incorporates Discovery Parks and G’day Parks).

Although they haven’t released plans, Brisbane media reports that the group intends investing to create an attraction that will increase tourism and create local jobs, suggesting that the golf course would be integrated with broader family-friendly attractions.

Meridian Plains A little closer to the coast but drawing on the attractions of the hinterland, a massive tourist park, function facility and short-term accommodation development is on the drawing board at Meridian Plains. This 34ha development on Westaway Road will include 185 camp sites, 40 cabins, 24 safari tents, 93 studio room apartments, a function facility for 200 people, plus eating and entertainment facilities. It will attract 164,000 visitors per year generating $24 million in tourism expenditure and creating 105 jobs.

Beerwah A 200-dwelling lifestyle resort for the over 50s situated on Steve Irwin Way between Back Creek Road and the Beerwah Hideaway has been approved and is awaiting construction.

Beerwah A large aged-care and retirement living facility is proposed for the eastern side of the railway in Beerwah on two adjoining blocks. The 25 independent living units and 93-bed high-care residential facility proposal is for two four-storey buildings – one housing the independent retirement living units and the other the care facility.

Coles court battle gets interesting Beerwah A 1.5ha parcel at 35 Pine Camp Road is proposed to be developed as a retirement and residential care facility, comprising almost 200 beds across an 88-room single-bed, two-level retirement care facility; a threestorey 46-unit retirement complex and 12 duplex-style dwellings.

Not too bad for a region that some people say is deliberately being held back by council.

If you still think that the area is being hamstrung by the planning scheme, there’s good news. The planning scheme is about to be rewritten.

IT seems Sunshine Coast Council is not the only opponent that Coles will be fighting in court.

Coles recently lodged three separate Planning and Environment Court appeals against the council’s refusal for the development applications at the corner of Roys Road and Steve Irwin Way in Beerwah.

A number of parties have so far indicated they will join the dispute, lodging their intentions with the court to enter the appeal court case.

Village Fair Investments, which owns the Beerwah Village and Beerwah Marketplace shopping complexes, has nominated to be a correspondent supporting the council’s refusal of the Coles supermarket and the petrol station/McDonald’s applications.

This action means Village Fair Investments will have the opportunity to put forward arguments for the court to uphold council’s refusal of the development proposals.

However, in what may be a massive blow to Coles, state government big-guns have decided to step in and add their weight.

The Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning has flagged its intention to present arguments in the appeal case.

As the government department that deals with planning and development, this turn of events could be the clincher in the case, depending on whether it will present a case for or against the development.

The exact details of their position will not be made known until the department lodges an outline of its submission.

Many others who made submissions against the original Coles development application are eligible to

join the legal battle but have not elected to do so.

However, they would most likely applaud and support the efforts of the council and Village Fair Investments.

300 carparks on the way at Landsborough THE new railway carpark at Landsborough may be closer than we thought after an announcement by Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt on the imminent start of the project.

After GC&M News reported that the first stages in the Beerburrum to Nambour railway upgrade would include the new 300-carpark facility on the eastern side of the railway line, Mr Hunt was pleased to relay that, in fact, early works are just around the corner.

“Just this month we’ve seen demolition and vegetation removal begin at Landsborough, which will be home to a new 300-space park ‘n’ ride facility,” Mr Hunt said.

“Pre-construction activities on the $550.8 million Beerburrum to Nambour Rail upgrade (B2N) are now under way, with early construction on stage one of the project (between Beerburrum and Beerwah) expected to begin early 2022, with major construction to follow.”

The area is currently surrounded by barrier fencing, with several buildings earmarked for demolition and some vegetation to be removed, which will take up to six weeks to complete.

During this work, fauna spotters will be on-hand to make sure any wildlife is looked after.

A Department of Transport and Main Roads construction notice shows that the demolition and clearing works will occur Monday-Saturday from 6am6pm and that some noise and dust could be created at times.

The jointly funded project will deliver benefits to both road and rail users through track duplication and road improvements, increasing the frequency of train services on the Sunshine Coast and alleviating pressure on the Bruce Highway.

Community bank for Beerwah?

By Lea Parkes IN the past few years, the local banking landscape has changed significantly across the hinterland. With the closing of five bank branches, including both the ANZ and Suncorp branches at Beerwah and Maleny as well as the shutting down of Westpac at Beerwah, some locals have become frustrated by the lack of choice and reduced in-person banking services available in our communities.

Local businessperson and former Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce president Ursula Starkovsky has decided the time is right for the area to establish its own community bank and is calling on others to get involved with the process.

Ursula has been investigating how to establish a Heritage Bank community branch in one of our local townships.

First, she needs to get four or five interested individuals willing to become part of a steering group to help establish the project and gauge the viability of establishing a community branch. If this process is successful, then a public company is formed and registered, and capital of about $500,000 would need to be raised to fund the community’s share in the venture.

Investors would be able to invest a minimum of $100 to a maximum of $10,000.

Ursula is confident that a community bank would be enthusiastically supported by our local community, not just because it would provide another local banking option but because of the additional community benefit via the contribution of profits back into community groups and organisations.

Beerwah’s million-dollar meeting place BEERWAH’S newest million-dollar facility, the Beerwah Community Meeting Place, was officially opened on Thursday, September 23. It was brought to life by a $1.65 million grant from the Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package.

The facility will offer a unique space for residents and community groups to catch up by the water.

Deputy Mayor Cr Rick Baberowski couldn’t contain his excitement during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, saying the facility will be a major addition to the Beerwah town centre.

“This building will be part of the community heart of Beerwah where we can see our community culture, arts and heritage come to life in a lake-side precinct that already hosts the Beerwah Library, community hall and Turner Park,” Cr Baberowski said.

“Inspired by the natural environment that surrounds us, the Beerwah Community Meeting Place’s design takes into account the winter sun, summer shade, natural breezes and landscape to ensure all who use this space are comfortable.

“It’s also great to see that these flexible, multi-functional and adaptable indoor/outdoor meeting areas and social spaces will suit all sorts of group sizes and needs.

“I’m very grateful to everyone involved in planning and delivering this people-focused project and I look forward to the many initiatives that emanate from its use,” Cr Baberowski said.

The meeting place is next to Beerwah Library at 25 Peachester Rd and is now available for bookings.

By Jack Waters IT’S been clear for some time that COVID-19 is here to stay, with businesses and entire industries forced to adapt to meet the ever-changing demands brought about by the pandemic.

The death care industry is no different, with new innovative methods drastically changing the way it will operate for years to come.

Possibly the biggest change to come out of COVID-19 is the growth of funeral streaming services, which make it possible for family members and friends to attend the funeral from the safety of their own homes.

Local funeral company Gregson & Weight, located in Caloundra, Buderim, Noosa and Nambour, have offered live streaming for several years at no extra charge to families.

General manager Luke Gregson said live streaming opened another avenue for those wishing to attend a service without having to worry about the current restrictions in place.

“With COVID lockdowns it has really offered some great comfort to family members and other members of the public who have been unable to personally attend funeral services,” Luke said.

“We have also been offering mobile streaming if the service is at another location and a couple of the local churches have also been able to stream directly to our website when needed.

“With more families living separately around the country and the world, the live streaming has been a really positive initiative and is here to stay,” he said.

Alex Medcalf and George Inggs have been at the forefront of the funeral streaming industry for a number of years after forming Naoca in 2018 while working together at Traditional Funerals in Brisbane.

Naoca projects engineer Matt Vaughan-Jones said Naoca was basically YouTube for funerals, allowing people to be part of the service when they would otherwise be left out.

“We work directly with the funeral homes. They organise the livestreams through our online platform and take care of the actual filming of the service or outsource it to a professional live streamer,” Matt said.

“Our platform makes the whole thing easier than people think. The funeral industry isn’t known for being on the cutting edge of technology and we make live streaming easy for them.”

Matt said there was already a market for funeral live streaming before the pandemic, with COVID-19 only accelerating its growth through necessity.

“When COVID hit we had no choice but to ride the wave and respond to the explosion in demand,” he said.

“In one sense we were ahead of the curve because funeral streaming wasn’t as popular as it is today.

“We are already seeing a huge uptake of streaming and we’ve had viewers from all over the world.

“And it’s not just opportunities for online funeral attendees. There’s even more value for the funeral homes who are now able to provide better support to families, reach a wider audience and grow their business,” Matt said.

Family sized blocks planned for Maleny

A NEW development proposal to Sunshine Coast Council over part of a large lot in Maleny, fronting Bridge Creek Road from the intersection with Palm Street, promises ample space for the family.

In a shift away from sardine-style development, the subdivision will create 34 new lots with block sizes starting at a generous 800m2 up to 1,500m2.

The largest of the 34 lots will be a 5ha rural block, as it sits within a section currently zoned as rural. On this block, the planning report specifies that all identified remnant vegetation and koala habitat is to be retained.

This provision will provide an attractive rural westerly outlook for the subdivision, ensuring that the Maleny character is maintained.

A fond farewell after 30 years at Mooloolah school THE Mooloolah State School community recently farewelled five long-term staff members who are retiring after many years of committed service to both the school and the local community.

GC&M News caught up with Jenny Wilson who was involved in the school as a parent, before being employed as a teacher aide more than three decades ago.

How does it feel to be retiring after more than 30 years at the same school?

I find it hard to believe that it has been 30 years! I first became involved with the school well before my children started there, when the community were trying to get the old prep building to be used as the kindy. Thank goodness this didn’t happen as the kindy ended up with a lovely new building and the school is still using that old demountable that was moved to the new school temporarily 36 year ago. At thee moment

I feel excited and a little scared about retiring but look forward to doing some relaxing and trips in our caravan.

How has it been to both live and work in your community?

When we moved to Mooloolah over 40 years ago I didn’t know anyone, so through being involved first through playgroup and then the school I have met so many wonderful people. Then there are all the kids, who have made coming to school every day so much fun. I love walking down the street and you hear a little voice calling out “hello Mrs Wilson” or they’re waving at my car as I drive past. Mooloolah really is a very friendly town to live in.

What has it been like to have both your children and grandchildren go through the school?

I started work at the school the year my youngest daughter Kylee was in year 1 but had always helped dau iin my son’s classrooms since they started. Over the yyears there have been quite a few members of staff have their children go through the school, though h I don’t know of anyone else who has had their grandchildren too. g I really enjoyed being able to be so involved with all tthe kids through their primary school years, though II’m not so sure that the boys would agree when they were getting into trouble because there was no way they could hide this from me or their little sister!

It really was the perfect job when the kids were at school because I was able to work while they were at school and have the school holidays off with them.

It really isn’t uncommon to have children of former students starting school, so when I say “I remember when your mum or dad went to school here” they look quite amazed.

What changes have you seen in 30 years?

So many changes. There seems to be a lot more pressure on teachers and students now. There seems to be a lot more assessments, though this is explained very clearly to even the very young students, exactly what they are doing and how to do well. I think when I first started the role of teacher aide it was very much to support the teacher in the classroom and while we still do this, most teacher aides now also have a more specialised role in the school and look after various programs or areas allocated to them.

I’d like to say thank you to everyone for the memories, lots of wonderful memories!

Final days loom for historic tree

SOS … Save Our Sportsground!

THE Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee (BSMC) needs your support.

The committee is a group of volunteers from the clubs and groups who regularly use the Beerwah Sportsground.

They are on the financial cliff edge with Sunshine Coast Council restrictions stopping many events and activities at the ground that would normally fund the committee to look after the community facility.

The committee receives limited funding from the council, relying on raising funds through others using the grounds.

After two years of battling bureaucracy, the committee has won a concession from the council, which will prepare a land management plan to formalise acceptable uses under the lease the BSMC holds over the sportsground.

However … the council has stipulated that the community must be in favour of the sportsground being used for the identified range of extra activities (other than sport) and that support must be made loud and clear.

The council has engaged consulting company CPR Group to undertake community consultation.

The list of identified activities includes caravan club rallies (including overnight camping), motorcycle club rallies (including overnight camping), Sunshine Coast Kennel Club (including overnight camping), community barbeques, pony club events (including overnight camping), fundraisers/charity events, volunteer events, charity sports days, carols by candlelight, rugby league club fundraising events, circuses, rodeos, trade shows, caravan/motorhome shows, motor car shows and community movie events.

These events bring tourists and visitors to the area, who in turn spend their money in local businesses.

THE old tree fig tree overlooking Glass House State School on Coonowrin Road could be in the final few days of its long life with Sunshine Coast Council to decide on its future in the wake of a new housing development.

Concerned resident and Glass House Mountains local Calani Payton has created a petition, which has already acquired 517 signatures, opposing the removal of the tree.

Calani said she was told by thee council that the tree could be saved if she presented enough signatures as well as testimonials as to why the tree was important.

“There has been a lot of housing development around our Glass House Mountains recently. New estates are appearing around every corner and while we welcome new neighbours, we do not welcome the loss of one,” Calani said.

“The fig tree protects biodiversity allowing all kinds of Australian fauna to call it home and a year-round food source. The possums living in our roof travel up this tree nightly, birds flutter

in and out constantly, and this visual buffer from heat has sheltered school children for a very long time.

“The council has yet to approve the removal of the tree, let’s aim to persuade them otherwise,” Calani said.

The events listed give locals entertainment and activities for children and youth, and raise funds for local charities and causes – the Beerwah Charity Sports Day being one prime example.

The committee needs your help to let the council know that you support the BSMC and its proposed activities.

Cr Rick Baberowski is pleased that clarity will soon the reached.

“It’s not easy to navigate a way through the state government’s strict regulations designed to protect both the public and private sector interests but I think we’re getting there,” he said.

“Now is the time for the community to provide their feedback on how they feel about the potentially expanded scope of future events at the grounds. All working together we can get it done.”

The committee needs your help to let the council know that you support the BSMC and its proposed activities.

All you need to do is send an email to beerwahsportsground@crpgroup. com.au saying that you support the proposed uses for the grounds and that they will benefit the whole community.

Ask everyone you know to do the same. Send messages to businesses, caravan groups, motorcycle clubs, car clubs, sporting organisations … anyone who can show their support.

If the CPR Group can tell the council the community is overwhelmingly in support of the uses going ahead, the council will have to support the sportsground committee and give it the approval to keep the grounds afloat.

The alternative is that the results will tell the council that people aren’t interested, which means it won’t approve the uses and the committee will face financial ruin.

And that’s not an outcome anyone wants to see.

Findings from Maleny pathways survey

THERE is a native American proverb that says: “Those who tell stories rule the world”. It is something Beerwahbased ghostwriter Roxanne McCartyO’Kane has felt in her soul for as long as she can remember.

On September 23, Roxanne was awarded the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Micro Small Business Woman of the Year at a gala night at The Events Centre Caloundra.

After sharing people’s stories both in print and online as a journalist since 2007, Roxanne moved into ghostwriting non-fiction books in 2018 and has been running her business full-time since the end of 2019.

“For the past 14 years as a journalist, I have helped to tell stories that have shocked, educated, inspired, uplifted and cautioned as well as passed on the wisdom of the person I am working with,” Roxanne said.

“Now, as a businesswoman, ghostwriter and writing mentor, I can take that to a whole new level and help aspiring authors to connect with themselves, their stories and their readers in a powerful way that transforms everyone involved.

THE community-based Maleny Pathways Working Group received an overwhelming response to its recent survey assessing the safety and accessibility of getting around Maleny without a car. The 409 responses have been collated into a comprehensive report that shows a notable absence of safe, connecting pathways in Maleny.

Report findings will be presented at a public forum hosted by Maleny Forums in the Maleny Community Centre on Monday, October 18.

Report co-author Cath Ovenden is keen for people to hear the survey results first-hand and give further valuable input before the group finalises the report.

Cath said it was clear Maleny people felt strongly about the issue with 6% of residents completing the survey.

“We look forward to presenting the results and taking questions from the floor,” Cath said.

4RS INITIATIVE GROUP is focused on the key issues of REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE and REPAIR. Key focus areas and priorities are currently being developed.

NBN WORKING GROUP is preparing a submission to the federal government’s Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee highlighting the pressing NBN issues faced by Maleny residents. Support from Maleny Commerce and Sunshine Coast Council’s head of strategy Bill Haddrill has been promised.

The working group is keen for active new members.

PATHWAYS WORKING GROUP received 409 responses to its recent survey assessing accessibility and safety of Maleny pathways. Survey results will be presented at a public forum on Monday October 18 (details below).

PARKING WORKING GROUP identified parking issues in Maleny. Feedback has been provided to Sunshine Coast Council representatives.

TRAFFIC FLOW WORKING GROUP researched Maleny’s traffic flow issues and presented a comprehensive report to Sunshine Coast Council representatives.

PEDESTRIAN CROSSING WORKING GROUP Following input from this group, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has repainted two Maple Street crossings, installed new high visibility crossing signs and changed two car parking spaces into motorcycle parking near Peace of Green to improve safety. Work continues with Sunshine Coast Council and TMR.

Maleny Film Society celebrates 30 years

The BIG Beach Cleanup

COMMUNITY organisations such as the Maleny Film Society (MFS) could not exist without dedicated volunteers like Nora Julien and Jill Morris (pictured).

Nora and Jill are founding members and passionate supporters of MFS, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

The enthusiasm and commitment of about 40 volunteers and more than 300 members make MFS one of the largest film societies in Australia. The society has come a long way since the early days of 16mm film reels to its current commercial cinema-quality projection and sound.

THE BIG Beach Cleanup next month will be a call to action to make a positive impact on our oceans and its inhabitants.

Gather your mates to join in the fun at the cleanup on Saturday, October 16 from 9am-1pm at Happy Valley Caloundra. You can chill out to live tunes as you remove debris from the beach and then bag yourself some free goodies for your efforts.

This is an opportunity to become a citizen scientist, learn about plastic-free alternatives, take part in free workshops and meet likeminded individuals keen to make a difference in the world.

The free event is collectively aimed at highlighting the huge problem of marine debris and plastic pollution.

The event is hosted by Visionary Ocean Warriors, a not-for-profit informal group of mainly school-aged kids who have been engaging the local Caloundra community for more than four years.

The group highlights the threat of marine pollution and empowers members of the community to make a difference. The group’s goal is to advocate for marine animals and the health of our oceans.

Visionary Ocean Warriors will be joined by other community groups at the cleanup, all working together towards a healthier ocean and planet.

At the event you will be able to meet amazing crew members from Sea Shepherd, an international non-profit marine conservation organisation campaigning to defend, conserve and protect the world’s oceans. They will answer questions and highlight volunteer opportunities to take further action.

Every clean up participant will receive a free Boomerang Bag that can be filled with donated items from the onsite pre-loved shop – a great incentive to participate and help reduce the number of items heading to landfill.

The Maleny Community Centre in the centre of town is a wonderful venue for the society. Silent movies were screened in the hall in the 1930s when it was the first in a rural community to gain a cinema licence. Today, MFS continues this important cultural and community tradition with the best of world cinema.

The introduction of a Saturday 3pm matinee has ensured as many people as possible can enjoy the MFS program.

The matinees have now attracted a new cohort of movie-goers who prefer an afternoon session.

Unfortunately, MFS was unable to continue offering meals at evening screenings due to COVID restrictions.

The committee was keen to maintain the sense of community at the evening screenings so now has tables set up so patrons can bring their own dinner or take-away when doors open at 6pm.

The licensed bar is available in the evening and the MFS tradition of homemade slices with tea or coffee continues for both sessions.

Non-members can now book tickets online or at the Maleny Visitors Centre from midday Friday. Tickets may also be available at the door if not sold out.

‘... poetry on screen’, this story of hope and resilience provides insights into Maori culture. This powerful film moves back and forth in time as it traces the very different lives of three cousins.

Fantastic prizes will also be on offer for the most debris collected and most unusual items found.

The super Mend-it Café will be operating on the day for members of the community to bring along clothing that needs simple repairs.

While all the action takes place, there will be live music from young local musicians and marine debris art will be displayed using rubbish found on the beach to highlight and raise awareness of items frequently left behind to litter Sunshine Coast beaches.

An AUSMAP microplastic study will take place at 9am. This is a citizen science initiative that involves sieving sections of the beach to capture small pieces of plastic known as microplastics.

All marine debris collected will be documented into the Tangaroa Blue Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) to help address the major causes of local marine pollution.

Visionary Ocean Warriors has been recognised as a Sunshine Coast Council Ocean Champion for its ongoing contributions to reduce marine and plastic pollution and the event is proudly supported by the Sunshine Coast Council.

The inclusion of live music, information stalls and free workshops will aim to encourage community members to participate in the cleanup, especially those who would normally not consider it or who have never engaged in a cleanup.

Eyes of the tree THE recent intersection upgrade outside the Beerwah State School required the removal of trees and vegetation as part of the road widening works.

The cultural heritage team from the Department of Transport and Main Roads worked collaboratively with the Kabi Kabi First Nations People and the Beerwah State School executive team to preserve a section of one of the oldest trees.

The tree was treated and laid outside the school hall to acknowledge its significance and celebrate its history, which were lost in the roadworks project.

New bowling mats for Maleny Bowls Club A ceremony was held to recognise its installation, which included a Kabi Kabi performance, a Welcome to Country and a story titled ‘From the eyes of the tree’, which detailed the long life of the tree and all it had observed in the area over the years.

This important learning and reflection place was made possible through collaboration with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the Kabi Kabi Aboriginal Corporation, Helping Hands Beerwah, Beerwah State School P&C Association and Beerwah Print.

MICHAEL Reck of RE/MAX Hinterland in Maleny recently presented the Maleny Bowls Club with a full set of new mats.

Club chairperson Wendy Bulger, who received the mats on behalf of the club, said the club was very pleased to have RE/MAX Hinterland support them in this way.

“Our mats have been looking a bit shabby recently and being over 10 years old and used regularly, we really needed a new set,” Wendy said.

“We were delighted when Michael Reck and Mark Clayton of RE/MAX said they would pay for the mats.”

Michael said the business was especially pleased to support the local bowls club.

“The club has been going for almost 85 years and has a great reputation for being a friendly, sociable and hospitable place where the quality of bowling is high,” Michael said.

“We have an ongoing commitment to our local hinterland communities and help out whenever we can.”

Mats are an essential part of playing bowls. They are used to protect the green and bowlers must keep one foot on the mat when they deliver a bowl.

“These mats are of an excellent quality and we look forward to using them for many years,” Wendy said.

Quota Club Caloundra Maleny Visitors CLUB members recently elected a new Information Centre committee for the club’s 10th year in the community.

Quota is an inclusive, friendly club that provides social interaction with community fundraising activities such as barbeques, cocktail evenings and morning teas. Motivating speakers attend club meetings to generate interest in the community.

New members are welcome to come join the club’s social coffee mornings, held on the first Friday of the month at 10.15am. Business meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month at 7pm at the Caloundra Power Boat Club.

GRANTS from $2,000 to $15,000 are now available for local groups that are developing, designing or implementing small community-based projects in conjunction with HQPlantations (HQP), a responsible wood certified forestry company.

The grants are part of Responsible Wood’s community grants program, now in its second year, which rewards groups for collaborative projects, activities or events that connect communities to certified forests and forest growers.

The program helps give communities better access to local sustainably managed and certified forests by providing an opportunity to build community connection through planning, completing and benefiting from community projects.

Experienced forester and Local Land Services NSW’s external relations manager Megan Graham will administer the community grants program.

Although there may be the more obvious organisations that have suitable projects for the grants, such as men’s sheds, recreation clubs or environmental groups, Megan is still encouraging HQP communities to develop a project idea and apply by October 31.

Applicants will be notified of their application status on November 15, with successful projects to be completed by May 30 2022.

Show some love for Pineapple Country By Sonia Isaacs Clark PINEAPPLE Country is set to return on Sunday October 17 for yet another stellar afternoon of live music featuring some of the brightest stars of the Australian country music scene.

Get ready to kick back from 11.30am until 6pm on the rolling hills and natural amphitheatre of the Big Pineapple’s Diablo Oasis for this family-friendly outdoor gathering, which also supports our live entertainment industry.

Organised by long-term live music industry champions Jack Rabbit Events and Solbar, Pineapple Country features a seriously impressive line-up of homegrown talent including local artists Kim McCartin, Jen Mize, Benji and Soni Pocock from The Vibe along with multi-award-winning headliners and Aussie country music legends, Troy Cassar-Daley and Busby Marou.

Beerwah local and event manager at Jack Rabbit Events, Shelly Le Vesconte, said the upcoming event was a great opportunity to have some fun with family and friends.

Shelley said it was also an opportunity to show some real support for local suppliers and live music professionals who have been struggling to stay buoyant against a tide of COVID-19 cancellations, regulations and red tape impacting the industry in recent times.

She is clearly passionate about putting on great events not only to entertain but also provide a platform for local suppliers and is committed to ensuring the ongoing sustainability of events in the local area.

“One of the biggest hurdles for local promoters and the live entertainment industry, apart from the obvious uncertainty around COVID-19, was the challenge around additional fees and red tape for regulation, compliance and extra government-regulated charges on top of the expected costs to put on events,” Shelly said.

This had added an additional burden to the already challenging landscape for live events in recent years, she said.

“There seems to be an inequity in the events playing field at a local level, with private entities or long-term industry professionals not always dealt the same hand when it came to support and regulation requirements.

“I would love to see the government support the music and event industry more, by waving fees and charges and by supporting small businesses who operate locally,” Shelly said.

Community members who want to support local entertainment can show some love for live music by buying tickets to events.

If there is any reason Pineapple Country cannot go ahead refunds will be offered.

GLASSHOUSE Country Bowls Club games director Dave Hayes reckons lawn bowls is the perfect sport the whole family can enjoy together.

Dave says it’s a great way for people of all ages and abilities to have fun and stay active in a friendly and social setting.

On Sunday October 10 the club will host a free comeand-try day from 11am–1pm. Club members will be on hand to give a few tips, and bar and dining options will be available throughout the day.

Whether you fancy having a competitive go or an easy-going social game in a supportive and friendly atmosphere, lawns bowls may be the new hobby for you.

Dave says one of the great things about the sport is that it’s easy on the body but still offers enough challenges for those wishing to extend their game skills.

“We love seeing the grandkids come along and play alongside their grandparents, and it’s a great game the whole family can enjoy, suitable for ages 10-110,” Dave said.

To encourage more families to get involved, juniors (up to age 18) who join the club will get free membership for the first year, with coaching available through the week.

As well the social aspect, the club also has a competitive side where individual and team members enter representative competitions.

THE Animal Justice Party is calling on environmentally aware residents in the region to attend its upcoming environmental awareness evening on October 4.

The event will be held at BCC Cinema, Maroochydore Sunshine Plaza. It will begin at 5.30pm with a screening of the award-winning documentary ‘I am Greta’, which follows teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg on her global crusade for change.

The screening will be followed by an interactive panel discussion hosted by Maroochydore House of Representatives candidate Tash Poole, and environmental leaders from the Sunshine Coast area working to address issues in our community.

Tash is an animal advocate, law student and a passionate Sunshine Coast local whose goal is to create longevity, sustainability and harmony for animals, the environment and the community.

Tickets for the event cost $30, which includes $20 film admission, an $8 fundraiser contribution to the Animal Justice Party Queensland and a $2 booking fee.

This is one of many events hosted by the Animal Justice Party Queensland that continues to campaign for animals and actively contest wildlife destruction, factory farming, live exports and animal abuse at a government policy level.

YOU Garish signage

I UNDERSTAND that it is advertising that pays for newspapers and commercial television. I know this.

Everyone knows this. Advertising pays for what you and I read, especially in community newspapers. However, it is the signage advertising, or should I say “shameless self-promotion” by real estate agents that has ultimately led me to share my frustration in this letter.

What is going on with these garishly hot pink ‘For Sale’ signs littered all over the place across our rural setting?

Suddenly, walking along Simpson Street in Beerwah at high noon is akin to walking past the Pink Pussycat in Kings Cross, Sydney at midnight without the fun!

If hot pink is your colour, lovely.

Everyone likes hot pink from time to time but having it in your face day in day out on your local wanderings has me wishing I were colour-blind.

If I may, and forgive me for speaking candidly here, as well as being ‘outthere’ I will give it a red hot (not hot pink) go at what I would like to see happen with real estate signage: 1. Just put a sign up outside a dwelling saying ‘For Sale’, a smiley face and a phone number, then wait for the phone to ring or email to arrive.

2. (Optional) When the dwelling is under contract, put a nice sticker on it horizontally, not at an angle for us to read as we are trying to safely drive by.

3. (And this is the killer) Once the property is sold – take the sign down.

There is no need at all for a ‘Sold’ sticker at another 45-degree angle on a sign that has been up there since Adam was a boy. No need. The dwelling is sold. Do you know why we know? There is no absurdly coloured sign with a smiley face, phone number, email, twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Tinder where one stood prior.

I WOULD like to congratulate Cliff Snick on his excellent letter in the GC&M News September 14 edition.

Cliff highlights the concerns many of us have regarding rapid urban development in our region.

The majority of the area located between Elimbah and Beerwah is currently designated as outside of the SEQ urban footprint and is supposed to be set aside to provide an inter-urban break between the suburbs of Greater Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

Unfortunately, both our current state government and local council seem very development focused so one must wonder how long this current plan will be adhered to as we all know money talks and BS walks!

Christian Henderson Beerburrum I would like to fully support Cliff Snick’s letter (GC&M News, September 14). Cliff presents a very realistic view of probably what will happen with new residential development in the Glasshouse Country area.

As Cliff ’s letter highlights, we have wonderful historic and culturally significant attractions in our region.

National parks, great bush walks, iconic geological formations and, probably more importantly, fascinating Indigenous history.

Urban encroachment is a major concern that we are experiencing now.

The pineapples and the macadamias are disappearing bit by bit.

On May 8, 2019 the Glass House Visitor Information Centre held its 10-year anniversary celebrations. Our three area politicians – federal, state and local – all made fine speeches. All of their focus was on the uniqueness of our region and how vital it was to preserve and promote this uniqueness. You could call it a declaration.

The attraction of our beautiful area will be lost if urban development is allowed to continue. The plan to establish connecting walking tracks between park areas is starting to

Respect for neighbours

IT’S a pity that the pictured sign at the Maleny Golf Club is not prominently displayed on the front gate. It is displayed at one of its side entrances where no one can see it.

I refer to the well-intentioned call for the members to “respect their neighbours”. Pity the users of the golf club do not abide by this aspiration.

The pedestrians on Obi Lane Maleny are very often verbally abused by some golf club users when they are accessing the club when asked to slow down.

I experienced this on the morning of September 11 and was subjected to

I am told that the person in question is a serial offender and has abused other walkers who have asked him to slow down.

It’s a pity that the Maleny Police and the golf club have done nothing to stop the excessive speed at which golf club users drive in and out of the club down Obi Lane.

It won’t be long before a pedestrian is severely injured down that road.

VAD legislation

CONGRATULATIONS on the passing of the Voluntary Euthanasia Bill. It has always been a matter of individual right-of-choice and this still needs to be elevated.

The present proposed legislation is still a long way short of respecting individual rights because it insists that people must be in a state of pain and suffering before they can apply for assisted euthanasia.

That defies the right of people to avoid such suffering in the first place. That is ethically and morally unacceptable.

It is fundamental to avoid disaster – not wait for it to occur before acting.

The policy of the current VAD legislation ignores this. Delaying the introduction of it until 2023 is insulting.

Therefore, the involvement of the medical profession has no influence other than to diagnose the oncoming inevitability of a life of pain, suffering and debilitation. It is essential that the assisted dying decision-making

If we are to achieve ethical administration of individual rights, this voluntary euthanasia legislation must be updated in the very near future.

Generosity of Maleny people

ON Friday afternoon, September 17, I was at the pay desk of a busy service station in Maleny.

The customer before me was having considerable trouble with her card, which was being declined for no apparent reason. It was concluded that the problem was with the bank and not the service station’s equipment.

The customer eventually left to sort out this problem with the bank. I was a customer at the same bank and had the same problem.

To my amazement, the lovely lady behind me, a complete stranger to me and not knowing how much my bill was, offered to pay for my fuel! Fortunately, I had just exactly the amount in cash in my purse.

With all this confusion and hold up, there was now a considerable queue of customers waiting to pay their bill.

Whatever they may have been feeling, there were no complaints from any of them and the young man behind the counter was so apologetic, although it was no fault of his.

On the following day, I went to the ATM to replenish my cash, which came in $50 notes, and l presented one to the cashier of a local op shop for a purchase. She could not change this and, believe it or not, another dear lady behind me, seeing the problem, stepped up and offered to pay my bill!

Where else would you find such generous people? Thank you to both ladies and the patient people in the service station.

Re Beerwah Development Plan I agree with all that James Aitken wrote (GC&M News, September 14) about council and local businesses not wanting Coles to come to this area.

Allowing Coles will not only promote healthy competition but it will allow the residents of the Glass House area to shop locally.

As a Coles customer, I shop at Morayfield on a weekly basis and while there I shop at a newsagent, Kmart and

Millers, to name a few. At the same time, I shop at the Morayfield Aldi and Fresh & Save so I do not need to go to Beerwah.

The result is lost custom for Beerwah.

I know I am not the only one who goes to either Morayfield or Caloundra to shop at Coles.

By keeping Coles out of this area Beerwah retailers are doing themselves a disservice.

Re: Living their values?

(GC&M News, September 14) IN regard to Shane Daly’s queries about transitioning to renewable energy, some updates of relevant information seem worthwhile to assist in inspiring hope and cooperation in our communities.

As of late 2021 the national electricity grid has in its mix an average of 30% generation from renewable sources. And this mix is growing as the transition to renewable generation progresses. So, for those households and businesses not yet using onsite renewable electricity generation, their grid supply is transitioning to clean energy.

Large lithium batteries, which are gradually becoming part of our electricity supply for the grid and vehicles, in the near future will be mostly recycled after their relatively long lives. This will be achieved as recycling technologies continue to develop and expand. Also, note that Australia is the largest producer of lithium in the world, which reduces the likelihood of supply from any unethical sources.

What is worrying is how we as a nation have lost our initiative and momentum in related technological development and manufacturing capabilities.

If our government could show initiative and leadership and assist in nurturing these potential industries we will not be left behind by any global economic impacts of the transition.

Many people, including ABC patrons and Greens supporters, who hold aspirations for a stable and supportive environment and economy are transitioning their actions to become less dependent on polluting energy suppliers.

As it happens, I had the good fortune to design my own house, so it doesn’t need any heating or cooling. I also use a bike for local trips.

So I feel I can give Shane some reciprocal advice, assuming he is a committed capitalist. Please Shane, make sure you buy green electric power because coal-fired power is subsidised

and if you and your friends buy green, it might persuade the federal government not to build another (subsidised) coalfired power station.

Also Shane, could you remind your MP that it is good policy to tax things you want people to buy less of, like cigarettes. This could that be applied to carbon. Thanks for your help, Shane.

Maleny is blooming!

MALENY Street Gardeners’ Alliance is a group of local residents and avid gardeners with a joint interest in the beautification of Maleny and, in particular, Maple Street and the Riverside Centre for the benefit of both locals and visitors alike.

Planning is in progress to erect hanging baskets and place tubs of flowers along Maple Street, Riverside Centre, the bridge, Maleny Hotel and the RSL. It is also envisaged that the Maple Street roundabout will be planted out to add some much-needed colour and visual impact to the entrance of Maleny.

Consultation is currently in progress with the Sunshine Coast Council, Main Roads and various other interested parties to allow this exciting new

venture to move forward.

Plans are in their early stages but with the support and sponsorship of Maleny landlords and business owners such as Ian Russell, the pioneer of hanging baskets in Maleny, and enthusiastic approval from the Maleny Chamber of Commerce, Cr Winston Johnston and others, we are very hopeful that this ambitious new venture will ‘blossom’ into reality very soon.

In the meantime, the Maleny Street Gardeners’ Alliance will keep locals informed of the progress, as and when it happens.

THE Maleny Hospital Auxiliary’s recent annual high tea and fashion parade, a sold-out event, was held at the Maleny Community Centre.

The volunteer models did a wonderful job showcasing ladies’ fashions from Flaunt Maleny, men’s work garments from The Maleny Men and shoes from Imelda’s on Maple. Funds raised on the day will go toward an upgrade of the Maleny Hospital palliative care room.

Great produce great night

REGULAR readers know that I am always up for an opportunity to try an interesting menu. I have to say the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce AGM dinner at the Hideaway Weddings at Beerwah, which was promoted as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, definitely delivered.

While I am sure celebrity chefs and Masterchef contestants may have been able to create just as exciting a menu, with the variety of ingredients we were served they would not have been able to replicate the pride, enjoyment and sense

of community that came from bringing the people who grew/produced the ingredients together to share the meal.

Brownie and I were sitting with Robert and Narelle Barry from Barry Family Butchers while we enjoyed some of their very tasty beef cheeks. It was also great to see the passionate people from Yanalla Farms, Tropical Pines, Hive Haven, Oz Berries, Peter Boyle Macadamia, Glasshouse Ginger, Vanilla Vine, QCamel and the Glasshouse Mountains Coffee glammed up for the night and proudly sharing their produce.

ELECTED I’ve been everywhere man!

WITH the resumption of parliamentary sittings, the weeks in between have become jam-packed with visits around the electorate including celebrating grant funding, attending events and delivering marquees.

In one day alone I travelled from Maleny to Mount Mee dropping off a patchwork of colourful shades to many and varied community groups.

I visited Bellthorpe first, stopping for coffee and yummy croissants with the lovely locals at the Bellthorpe Progress Association to drop off their stunning blue marquee (and admire the paint job on their hall).

Then on to Bellthorpe Rural Fire Brigade to deliver a sunny yellow marquee to the men and women who protect their community from bushfires.

Traversing through Woodford, next stop was a coffee and chat with members of the Mount Mee Historical Society before they and the Mount Mee Pony Club received their new gazebos.

On the way back to the office, I was thrilled to see that work was progressing on the vegetation clearing alongside Beerburrum Road and to announce that a 4.5km section between Soldier Road and Eaton Road will be ripped up, relaid, resealed and widened starting in mid-September. And, yes, the 100km/hr

On another day, I celebrated Gambling Community Benefit Fund cheques with the Wamuran Men’s Shed (for a shed extension), Stanley River Rugby League Football Club (for a new electric scoreboard and timer) and Woodfordia (for a mower to prepare for the next folk festival).

I was also privileged to recently attend the annual general meeting of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce and was happy to see Jenny Broderick returned as president. It was equally exciting to see some new faces on the committee. The evening, held at Hideaway Weddings in Beerwah, also supported our local agribusinesses – strawberries, pineapples, ginger, vanilla, custard apples, macadamias, honey – all from Glass House. Great food and excellent company made it a memorable evening.

AS many of you would have hopefully seen by now, the latest addition to Beerwah’s ‘heart’ precinct is now open and ready for the whole Glasshouse Country community to enjoy.

The official ribbon was cut at the Beerwah Community Meeting Place on Thursday, September 23 and I was very proud to join the community for this terrific occasion.

Inspired by the adjacent natural environment, the building’s design works well to provide inspired indoor and outdoor spaces and critically expands the meeting rooms with three multi-purpose flexible meeting rooms and a spill-out outdoor area. It will be the ideal space for the many community groups and businesses to meet, collaborate and create.

Our community will also see future upgrades to Turner Park thanks to funding from the Queensland Government’s $100 million South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program. These improvements will include upgraded pathways, landscaping and recreational infrastructure.

Altogether, the new meeting place, library, community hall and Turner Park now make an even better lovely lakeside

Inspiring local doctor recognised as the best New bone health DR Sam Manger of Maleny has been program for Osteoporosis recognised as GP of the year by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) at its recent Queensland state awards.

RACGP president Dr Karen Price said the awards were an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the hard work of GPs and their teams in caring for their communities.

“This year’s Queensland winners have truly gone above and beyond for their patients and contributed to the health of their communities,” Dr Price said.

Dr Manger said that doctors don’t become GPs to win awards but being recognised was wonderful news.

“I have spent almost a decade as a rural GP, including in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services, and it has proven to be an incredibly rich and rewarding experience,” Dr Manger said.

“For anyone considering a career as a rural GP I would strongly recommend you give it a try. You are a valued and integral member of your local community and the opportunities to expand your skill set are immense.

“I have a strong interest in whole of person and multidisciplinary care.

Rather than just fixing a problem and moving to the next patient I think that a good GP needs to apply creative thinking and develop a strong relationship with patients over many years.

“I am also extremely passionate about mental health and do a lot of work in this space. That includes my role as an ambassador to Equally Well Australia and I regularly support and promote the

mental health and wellbeing of GPs and health professionals.”

Dr Manger said he also has a podcast for health professionals, called ‘The GP Show’, which he said was rewarding.

He has been hosting the podcast with expert guests since 2017.

“Being the best GP you can be also involves integrating yourself at a community level,” Dr Manger said.

“I have spoken at a wide range of public events including the Woodford Folk Festival and the Transitions Film Festival and run online workshops for the public in areas of health promotion to improve understanding of health and wellbeing.

“Teaching is something I find really rewarding. I’m a senior lecturer and medical educator with James Cook University College of Medicine and Dentistry and that involves supervising, mentoring and teaching some 525 GP registrars, including 50 in the local area.

“I’m in the middle of developing a Masters in Lifestyle Medicine, so stay tuned to hear more on that front.” Dr Manger said.

The national RACGP awards will be announced on November 20.

The Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, in collaboration with aged care specialists and local medical professionals, is proudly hosting a free community forum on maintaining independence, staying connected and ageing well on Tuesday October 19, at 9.30am.

The forum will feature a diverse list of guest speakers including clinical gerontologist Alison Argo, financial protection advisor and counsellor Lola Mashado and senior representatives from specialist support organisations Home Instead and Relationships Australia Queensland. The forum includes a complementary lunch and presentation on how to navigate aged care services.

A NEW program providing bone health advice and care, with a primary focus on the prevention and management of osteoporosis, will be launched in October.

Richard Martin, accredited exercise physiologist at Beerwah Active Physio, will run the innovative new program that includes client education and evidence-based exercise therapy.

“I understand people diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia can have concerns about exercising, but specific exercises can actually improve bone strength,” Richard said.

“Our bone health program will closely monitor participants as they learn more about their condition and begin their exercise journey.

“At the end of the eight-week program, participants will have increased muscle strength, improved balance and reduced their falls risk through our tailored program.

“They will be given a continuing home exercise program to improve bone density. Studies show significant increases in bone mineral density after a regular resistance exercise program,” Richard said.

The bone health program will start on Wednesday, October 13 with one-hour weekly sessions from 1pm over the eight weeks.

Participants in the program will be limited to eight to allow a focus on individual needs and fitness levels.

Richard also strongly recommends an individual session before the start of the program for assessment and discussion of each participant’s needs and goals.

Finals this year are on Friday and Saturday October 8 and 9 with the winners of those games going through to grand finals on the Friday and Saturday October 15 and 16.

The BeeGees teams who will play in the finals are the U12(2) green, U13(3), U14 girls, U16 girls as well as the premier and reserve women’s teams.

Congratulations to our club secretary Amanda for taking out Club Person of the Year for the second time which is well deserved with all the effort that she puts into the club to help it run smoothly during the season and in the off-season.

The friendly Missiles team played furiously defeating the Wagtails who put up a gallant fight. Congratulations Gerry Gabriel, Cynthia Garvie, Sheryn Golledge and Cheryl Cavanagh for giving their best.

Colin Harris visited from the Coolum club on Sunday September 12 and played Ken Barker, beating him 13–10.

On Thursday September 16, Lynette Evans and Helen Andrews teamed up to score 10 hoops against Sally and Bev who managed only 5. Vince and Kath drew with Val and Gillian 8-all.

They lost their first game of the season but then didn’t lose any other games.

Trevor MacLean, Frank Buckley and Brian Squires ended up with eight points more than the second placed teams, so they had a convincing win.

Congratulations to them all and particularly to Trevor who didn’t miss a game all season and carried the other two through some close games. In equal second place were the Golfers and the Outlaws.

We had 16 enthusiastic bowlers turn up in beautiful spring weather to enjoy the challenge of Friday scroungers. We welcomed Geoff and Sheryl Jepsen from Townsville. It was also great to see Doug McGufficke back on the green for all 18 ends and bowling well.
