Council bid to shortcut planning processes for dog breeding application The Diamond Valley Kennels Pty Ltd proposal to build a large dog breeding and kennel facility in Landsborough has created what is most likely the largest community response to any development application submitted to Sunshine Coast Council.

The response has been so large – with well over 400,000 public submissions – that the council has delayed the assessment process four times so approvals staff can deal with the backlog.

As a comparison, the controversial Sekisui House development at Yaroomba received almost 13,000 public submissions, which at the time was described as the largest response to a development application the council had received.

With the latest application the council has taken the unusual step of petitioning the Planning and Environment Court to allow staff to work outside the normal planning regulations so the assessment process can continue in a timely and efficient manner.

According to documents presented to the court, a vast majority of the submissions originated from two online campaigns – one by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Australia and the other by Oscar’s Law, an anti-puppy farm organisation.

More than 418,000 public submission emails were sent to the council from these two groups but the council’s IT system blocked 372,213 because of IT security policies and protocols.

An astounding 410,406 email submissions came from the Oscar’s Law campaign against the development application, of which 42,080 were successfully submitted and 368,326 were blocked by the council’s server.

The sheer volume of the submissions creates an administrative nightmare for the council as each submission needs to be individually reviewed.

The normal assessment process requires that each submitter be individually sent an acknowledgement letter or email, as well as an explanation once a decision has been made on the

fate of the application.

The council has asked the court to allow it to dismiss the blocked submissions and to treat the rest as one single submission from each of the organisations.

The council’s principal development planner, John Borthwick, said it would take the council’s one submission review officer 93.51 days to deal with just the 42,080 Oscar’s Law submissions that made it through their IT system.

It would then take a further 41.83 days to correspond with the 42,080 submitters to acknowledge their submission and then later send them a decision notice.

Mr Borthwick also raised his concerns that the large volume of Oscar’s Law submissions may have been generated through a mail merge process and that privacy of personal details may

be an issue if the submissions were accepted and published on the council’s development application website, as is the standard practice.

The council has asked the court to allow it to accept and consider one single representative copy of the Oscar’s Law submission template email and have this single representative submission copy available on the public record. It is asking that it be allowed to dismiss the remainder of the 42,079 receipted submissions and the 372,213 blocked submissions from the Oscar’s Law website.

The council is also asking that it be allowed to dispense with the standard feedback processes by publishing a copy of the decision notice on the council’s website, publishing a notice summarising the decision in a newspaper “circulating generally in the local government area” and by providing a copy to Oscar’s Law.

Maleny hospital celebrates centenary A hospital that was started by the people, for the people is celebrating 100 years.

Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital Auxiliary president Louise Hickey joined Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) representatives at the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the hospital on Wednesday, October 21.

“I think for the whole community it’s important to celebrate because it’s something the community started back 100 years ago,” Louise said.

“Very importantly, the hospital means that people can be treated for their medical issues here and don’t always have to travel down the mountain.

“Their loved ones can come in and see them, and we have an emergency department here too, which is so important for those urgent matters,” Louise said.

SCHHS chief executive Adjunct Professor Naomi Dwyer said the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital was originally built as a memorial to those who took part in World War I. “It was officially opened as a private hospital on October 21, 1920 and later gazetted as a general public hospital on May 21, 1921,” Prof Dwyer said.

“The original Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital served the community until a new facility was built and officially opened on October 17, 1987.”

The old building was removed and the site now houses Maleny Ambulance Station.

Prof Dwyer said that from those beginnings, the hospital had continued to change and grow with the community.

“Today it provides healthcare excellence to the local community,” she said.

“Maleny has an important role in the wider health service delivering care, such as the movement disorders clinic, midwifery services, residential transition care and, of course, helping us keep the community safe during our COVID-19 response.

“But this hospital is more than just a building. It is a community comprising healthcare professionals who are dedicated to caring for the people of this beautiful hinterland region.”

Blackall 100 huge local successes

Feedback from competitors was mainly about how much they enjoyed the 2020 event. However, Brett said that in reality it was a hot, humid and tough race that really challenged and took a lot out of people.

While the trail is magnificent across the Blackall Range, with a stunning rainforest vista, it is a feat of endurance for all, from elite athletes to first-time trail runners, who all gave it their best.

Brett said the beauty of trail running and this event was that you could “experience your life in one day”.

“Runners work through feeling like they may not make it, to pushing through, to the massive sense of achievement when they completed the course,” he said.

“People find out that they are able to achieve much more than they originally think, and when our competitors push through and ring the massive cow bell when they’ve completed their course it’s awesome to see.”

by Run Queensland on Saturday, October 17 was a sell-out success, with 850 competitors registering for the 50km ultramarathon, 100km endurance or the inaugural 21km trail run.

Race directors Brett Standring and Gavin Jackson were thrilled that the event was able to go ahead, albeit predominately Queensland competitors taking part due to COVID-19.

Brett said that as well as ensuring a full COVID Safe plan was submitted in advance for approval, additional adjustments around increased safety and sanitising measures were fairly straight forward.

“We are just so thankful that we able to host the event for 2020 – especially given the challenges that presented earlier this year – and we are just grateful that so many people turned up to back it.

“We had an incredible turn out from our running community and it was a wonderful opportunity to come together and support each other,” Brett said.

Reesha almost broke the course record with an impressive result of 4.56.27, while Brian’s winning time of 4.14.23 beat last year’s winner, with the quick time even more impressive given he is 49 years old.

A common thread among this year’s winners was their relatively recent uptake of trail running. Reesha took up the sport only five months ago when COVID-19 meant the cancellation of mountain climbing and boxing events she’d been planning to compete in.

Brian hit the bush tracks for the first time only last year.

Brett said he wanted to thank the Run Queensland team and the more than 100 volunteers who helped make this year’s event such a success.

He said that after a few weeks to recover, the team would start planning the 2021 event to be held on October 16.

Storm season 2020 – are you ready?

In this edition we chat with Peter Harkin, the acting regional manager of the SES North Coast Region, for some useful insights to help our readers be better prepared for what may be a hectic storm season ahead.

Q: Increased storm activity is forecast for this season. What does that mean?

When we talk about the storm season from an SES perspective, we think about the consequences from the impact of storm activity on the community.

Consequences from storms can include damage to vehicles and residential and commercial properties. In

these circumstances we mobilise our teams to respond to these situations. For example, our SES teams are trained in how to tarp roofs and use chainsaws when trees have come down or are posing a hazard after an extreme weather event. Our teams are also trained and have the capacity to assist in flash flooding where we are called for flood boat rescue.

Q: What are the main risks during storm season that readers should be aware of?

Storm activity can result in high winds, flooding and damaging rain, so areas of concern include fallen trees, vehicle and property damage, and the potential to be flooded in. The three key areas of damage caused are rain and wind to properties, trees coming down and flash flooding. We have teams to get people out or assist with these situations. There is also a likelihood that storm activity can bring power lines down. In these situations, stay away and contact your energy provider (Ergon/Energex). If it seems dangerous call 000 and alert the Queensland Police Service. If in doubt always call 000. If you come across a power line down across a road make sure you stay back and, if safe to do so, try to warn other vehicles to keep away by parking on a safe spot and putting your hazard lights on until the authorities arrive to alert others to the potential danger.

Q: What are some practical ways to mitigate these risks?

It all comes back to planning. However, residents often just need a basic plan. It doesn’t need to be

overly complicated. It’s not rocket science to secure loose items around Peter Harkin your property such as outdoor furniture and that flying favourite - the trampoline!

Also, if you are doing renovations, make sure you’ve secured the area. The key point is to look around your house and to think if a storm hits, what would be impacted.

Cleaning out gutters and trimming back overhanging trees and branches near the house is also useful.

Make sure the house is good repair with no missing or broken tiles, etc.

It’s also good to have a plan if power is lost and to make sure you have a torch in your emergency kit, and easy access to any medication your require and a first aid kit.

Q: What’s your advice if a bad storm hits at home?

Secure your home as best you can beforehand and stay inside during the storm. Gather your family in one area and try to find a safe space to stay together.

Tune into local warnings via the ABC online, radio or TV. You can also access information via the Bureau of Meteorology website www.bom.gov.au/qld/ or download the app. A batteryoperated radio is a great backup for updates.

Remember if it’s flooded forget it and if you require SES assistance call 132 500. In a life-threatening situation always call 000.

Locals supporting locals is at the heart of some of our best community initiatives and Maleny State High School’s recent decision to buy end-of-year presentation prizes through Maleny Commerce’s gift card scheme has proven to be an all-round winner.

Deputy principal David O’Shea said the school had been keen to support the Maleny businesses community, especially given the ongoing support these businesses provided to the school’s students.

Not too late to comment on Beerwah developments

By Greg Brown Public submissions remain open until November 16 for you to have your say on the proposed Coles shopping centre, McDonald’s and petrol station development on the corner of Roys Road and Steve Irwin Way at Beerwah.

The development proposal is contrary to the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, which designates that area as part of the medium impact industrial expansion zone for the region rather than as a commercial precinct.

To date, surprisingly few submissions have been received and published on the Sunshine Coast Council development assessment website considering the significant community response the proposal has received.

Four submissions are currently visible on the website regarding the application to establish a Coles shopping centre and a showroom facility. Three do not agree with the development as proposed and one is in support.

The application to build a McDonald’s and a petrol station has created less interest, with three submissions being published, all against.

which are large and significantly outside the future plans envisaged by the council through its planning, have the potential to be transformative for townships such as Beerwah.

Positives such as local jobs, retail diversity, retention of spending locally and convenience need to be balanced with issues such as site suitability, loss of light industrial lands, traffic flows, public transportation access and commercial precinct fragmentation.

After the November 16 cutoff, the council will consider the proposal against the planning scheme, taking into consideration any overriding factors presented by the developers in their argument for the application to be approved.

So if you want the council to know how you feel … make a submission.

Stepping out from humble beginnings Long-time Landsborough locals may remember that back in 2003 Stepping Out Podiatry’s first practice was at the Landsborough Medical Centre, operating only two half days a week.

Nearly two decades on, Stepping Out Podiatry owner Carly O’Donoghue is proud to be operating the business from four locations across the Sunshine Coast.

Passionate about their tropical fruit

By Sonia Isaacs Clark Neville (Nev) and Eileen Schafer have lived on the Sunshine Coast for more than 45 years and in Glass House Mountains for the past 13 years.

On October 17, family and friends turned up at Nev and Eileen’s residence for a surprise combined birthday celebration organised by their daughter Jennifer Schafer to mark their 90th and 89th birthdays respectively.

Jennifer said that due to the number of guests she had to split the event into two parts to comply with COVID-19 restrictions, with guests invited to either a morning or afternoon gathering.

By Sonia Isaacs Clark Maleny Flexi School may have missed out on being named overall state winner in the recent Showcase 2020 Awards for Excellence in Schools but staff and students are still understandably delighted with their regional win and being shortlisted as a state finalist in the ‘outstanding parent and community engagement’ award category.

We caught up with Flexi School coordinator Jo Rickards to find out more about the Maleny Flexi School.

How it works The Maleny Flexi School has been operating for 21 years and has enjoyed a long-standing collaboration with the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, where the school is based.

Currently the school has 23 students ranging in age from 15 to 18 years. It offers a combination of academic and vocational study pathways including community and business supported traineeships and apprenticeships tailored to support the unique needs and desired outcomes of the student. The school is attuned to a real world learning environment and offers flexibility (no timetables or uniform) in a humane environment that focusses on nurturing wellbeing, safety and connection.

Nurturing approach Jo explained that the program was a great example of a state school team implementing an approach that nurtures and maximises students’ academic, social, emotional and physical wellbeing resulting in dramatically improved learning outcomes and opportunities for young people.

“We provide a safe and supportive space that encourages relevant, empowering and inspiring learning experiences,” Jo said.

The philosophy The school is all about promoting inclusivity and diversity through a collaborative and Socratic approach, while also acknowledging the differences in young people’s needs with compassion.

The school offers flexible alternative learning that focusses on the importance of developing self-esteem and resilience in its young people through experiential learning. It supports its students to gain a broad range of qualifications and participate in a wide variety of community projects.

“Through providing opportunity, space and kindness, it astounds me that it can be so easy to get the best out of people if you can discover what they love about themselves,” Jo said. “This then unlocks endless energy to pursue their passion.

“It is a privilege and honour to be able to work alongside these young people in our community, and I love coming to work every day. This is my passion!” she said.

Jo currently works with teachers’ aide Sharon O’Farrell, who has been involved with the school for 13 years, and John Mays, who originally taught at the school from 1999-2014 and now volunteers his time.

Unique approach One of the key aspects that sets the Maleny Flexi School apart is its commitment to building relationships and engagement with local community projects and initiatives, and pursuing partnerships and opportunities with local businesses.

“Local businesses are the lifeblood in providing higher education and training, especially for our year 12 students,” Jo said. “I would love to acknowledge our local business owners that support our students through traineeship and mentorship.

“They are a large part of the reason we were successful in the Showcase Awards at a regional level and are responsible for supporting our students to complete their education and graduate with QCE certificates,” Jo said.

Jo loves working with the Flexi School students and is inspired by many of their ideas as change makers in the community. She hopes to continue to be involved with nurturing in an educational space that is safe, fun and engaging for many years to come.

Maleny Historical Society precinct open day The Maleny Cultural and Historical Society, the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club and the Maleny and District Men’s Shed will present an open day on November 14 from 8am–3pm at their shared grounds in Bryce Lane, Maleny.

The event will feature: • The historical houses Glenferna, Lawley House and Pricilla Cottage.

• Exhibits of Maleny’s history, artefacts and machinery.

• A display of vintage and classic cars.

• Demonstrations of blacksmithing skills.

• Entertainment by the Pioneer Ukulele Orchestra.

• Sale of handmade items and bric-a-brac.

• The premiere of the Glenferna doll collection.

The doll collection will be of particular interest with more than 600 beautiful, hand-crafted porcelain dolls depicting cultures of the world that have been created over 37 years and are displayed for the public to enjoy.

The dolls were recently gifted to the Maleny Cultural and Historical Society by doll artisan Louise Cogzell.

First sod turned on men’s shed Sunshine Coast hinterland men will soon have a new place to socialise, support each other and contribute to the community with construction started on the long-awaited Mooloolah Valley Men’s Shed.

The new shed is being constructed on land behind the existing Mooloolah Valley Community Centre with $250,000 funding from the federal government.

Turning the first sod recently, Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said this was a big moment for hundreds of local people.

The new building will include workstations for a variety of wood and metal working equipment as well as social spaces.

Maleny Cultural and Historical Society president Kevin Howell said the open day would be a fantastic opportunity for the Maleny and district community to view a wonderful collection of historical exhibits and gain an insight into our fascinating history.

Guests can also view the opportunities the Men’s Shed provides for the men of the district and the wonderful collection of motoring history provided by the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club.

Parking will be available on site and entry will be by donation.

The organisers will implement an approved COVID Safe plan.

Mooloolah Valley Men’s Shed president John Holland said the members of the shed were eagerly looking forward to beginning construction of the new building.

“Internal fit-out will be carried out by the members themselves as their very first project,” John said.

He said it was especially appropriate that the first sod was turned during National Men’s Shed Week, which ran from September 28 - October 3.

The nearest existing men’s sheds are in Beerwah and Maleny.

On Sunday, November 1 Hotel Maleny will host this year’s Melbourne Cup calcutta fundraiser for Maleny’s Smart Living Society.

For those who don’t know how a calcutta works, Smart Living’s Ric Townsend described it as basically a raffle with each of the prizes being one of the 24 horses competing in the Melbourne Cup. “These raffle prizes (drawn horses) become the first opportunity to make some money as the horses can be sold through the calcutta auction,” Ric said.

“All horses in the Melbourne Cup are auctioned with part of the proceeds distributed to raffle winners.

“The new owners who ‘buy’ the horses at the auction are then paid based on the race results.

“Sale proceeds are then distributed with raffle winner ticket holders receiving 50%, the charity receiving 15% and the 35% balance going to the prize pool for race day,” Ric said.

With fundraising made extremely difficult during COVID-19 restrictions, the calcutta will help cover the ongoing costs of running the charity’s operations.

Ric said recent media coverage indicated there was a severe shortage in affordable rental housing on the Sunshine Coast, an issue Maleny locals were particularly aware of.

“As a result, some of our most vulnerable community members are being forced away from their long-established local social and support networks or in some cases in our region, being forced to sleep in their cars,” Ric said.

Rachel said a recent staging at the hall had produced some spectacular afternoon and early evening photos taken by local Sunshine Coast photographer Jesse Purcell, which beautifully captured the changing ambiance of the venue.

“We went for a completely different style to what we had done at Conondale, and used crisp whites, neutrals and pretty floral tones to bring out the raw beauty of the newly painted building,” Rachel said.

It was evident how loved the Mooloolah Hall was to locals, many of whom popped in to see what was going

on during the Sunday afternoon staging event, she said.

Bev said the hall looked absolutely lovely staged for a wedding. She had no doubt that any bride walking into the venue would be delighted to walk through the fresh flowered entry and rose-covered bollards to see the simple yet stunningly elegant layout.

“Our hall looked beautiful and the staging was exquisite. We love having this new energy around the hall and look forward promoting this new upmarket feel and welcoming new groups to share our community hall,” Bev said.

The popular free Justice of the Peace service at Sunshine Coast Council Libraries is available again.

Dedicated volunteer JPs have returned to the libraries in Beerwah from 1–3pm Tuesday–Friday and between 9am–5pm at Caloundra Library.

However, you will be required to make a booking with library staff to use the JP service.

Customers are also asked to bring their own pen and to continue to adhere to social distancing requirements, including good hygiene and not attending if you are feeling unwell.

Local Christmas celebration

While the Maleny Chamber of Commerce isn’t able to hold its usual Christmas Festival in Maple Street, members have come up with an alternate idea that is sure to help build the Christmas spirit in town.

On Friday, December 11 the Maleny Showground will be buzzing with the Maleny Christmas Music Concert.

Gates will open at 5pm and the music kicks off at 6pm.

The live music program will begin with a Christmas choir singing well known Christmas songs. At 7pm a number of talented local musicians will perform, featuring Christmas songs in their play lists, with the evening culminating in an all stars line up at the end of the night.

“We are encouraging locals to get into the festive mood by dressing up in their Christmas gear and there’ll be $100 Maleny Gift Cards as prizes for the best dressed kid and adult,” Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton said.

“It’s great to see that various service clubs including Lions, Apex and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre will provide a range of food from burgers to

curries and Apex’s famous prawns on the night.

“Rotary will run the bar this year with beer, wine, mixed spirits and soft drinks and there will be a sectioned off area for drinking alcohol.

“There will also be a coffee van providing coffee, tea, chai, hot chocolate, frappes, muffins and cookies,” Nicole said.

Tickets will be available online for $5 per person (children 10 years and under free) and the event will be capped at 1,000 people due to COVID restrictions.

A percentage of any profits made will go to the Flexi School based at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

Nicole said the idea of the event was to make it a really local celebration, supporting local clubs and businesses for food and drinks and wonderfully talented local musicians for entertainment.

With 2020 being the year of unprecedented changes and challenges due to COVID-19, it’s fairly safe to say that Australia Post will take longer than normal to deliver parcels and letters.

This busy festive season there will be a greater need for customers to send Christmas mail as early as possible to allow the best chance of arriving in time for Christmas.

Peachester CWA members are already planning for their Christmas market to be held at the Peachester Hall on Saturday, December 5.

They are looking for locals interested in sponsoring a jumping castle, pony rides or petting zoo, or helping to pay for a face painter for the children. They also hope locals will donate prizes for the Christmas raffle.

With the countdown to Christmas now on, COVID-19 and social distancing requirements mean some of our timehonoured festive traditions may need reassessing.

With this is mind, the Santa photo, a social tradition at shopping centres for decades, as well as the customary school, day care and kindy visits from Santa, may require a rethink.

Queensland-based technology company Eredox may have found the perfect way to get Santa to every child this year, even with the current restrictions in place.

Glasshouse Country is getting Christmassy!

By Lea Parkes Christmas is such a special time of year and traditionally in Glasshouse Country one of events that many local families look forward to is our community Christmas carols.

Like many events and activities this year, the carols can’t go ahead because of COVID-19 but that hasn’t stopped a group of dedicated locals working out how we can keep the celebration happening as well as making sure everyone stays safe.

Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce president Jenny Broderick has been working with representatives from the Glasshouse Country churches, Celebrate Glasshouse Country and Glasshouse Country & Maleny News to come up with some creative new approaches for our local celebrations.

Not all details have been finalised but the headline event has been decided. It will be Carols by Livestream to be held on Saturday, December 12 from 5pm.

The local carols will be live streamed into participating cafes, pubs, clubs and restaurants across the area.

The businesses will take bookings ahead of time to ensure they can adhere to COVID Safe regulations and the plan is to make it as fun as possible. To add to the atmosphere there will be a roving MC on the night!

The chamber of commerce is also working on a window decoration competition for local businesses to get them into the spirit of the season.

Support and interest is being sought for a Christmas tree decorating competition. It will involve 25 Christmas trees to be decorated by school students, childcare centres and other enthusiastic groups. The decorated trees will then be put on display across the local area from December 1 with a great prize on offer.

The informal Glasshouse Country Christmas organising group is keen to

generate as much interest, support and sponsorship of the different activities as possible.

It would also like to encourage anyone interested in getting involved or organising their own event to get in contact.

Celebrate Glasshouse Country are currently working on plans for a Christmas scavenger hunt and the Beerwah CWA will be hosting their inaugural Christmas Shop and Festive Market Extravaganza 2020. For the second week of December their hall, in Simpson Street will be jingling with the sound of festive cheer as they open the doors from Monday – Friday from 9am – 12noon, and then the special market event on the Saturday from 8am – 12noon.

bingo and a Christmas trivia night which would be great for community groups to take on.

A website, Facebook page and Instagram account are currently being set up to help promote all local Christmas events that are taking place in local towns.

Community Groups Rotary continues support of community 2020 grants program For the past couple of years, the Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains has presented almost $10,000 from its community grants program to notfor-profit community groups throughout the Glasshouse Country region.

Applications are now open for the 2020 round of community grants and club secretary Ian Hope is once again calling on local not-for-profit groups to register their applications.

“Our club has been fortunate to have been able to raise funds this year with carparking at Australia Zoo during the school holidays,” Ian said.

“Consequently, we will again be offering

2019 Rotary grant recipients

our community grants this year and I’m sure many groups in our community would appreciate the opportunity to access some funding.”

Each year Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains members raise funds through a number of initiatives within the local community that they are pleased to share with other not-for-profit groups as part of their community grants program.

“Last year we were able to support a number of groups including the Mooloolah Hall, War on Waste Glasshouse Country, Landsborough Scouts, and Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains State School P&Cs,” Ian said.

Not-for-profit groups working towards a specific purpose that will benefit the local community can apply for grants of up to $1,000. Groups must operate within the postcodes 4517, 4518, 4519, 4550 and 4553.

Sunshine Coast Reconciliation Group After much delay due to the restrictions on mass gatherings because of COVID-19, the Sunshine Coast Reconciliation Group is pleased to provide two two-hour shared history seminars on Friday, October 30 and Friday, November 20. Both will run from 9.30–11.30am and be delivered in Buderim.

The first seminar, on the Indigenous and South Sea Islander history of Buderim, will be held at the BWMCA Hall, 3 Main Street Buderim. The second, on Missions and Reserves in Queensland, will be at St Marks Church hall, 7 Main St Buderim.

Speakers will include local Indigenous elders and historians Lyndon Davis, Thom Blake, Eric Law and Meredith Walker.

The seminars bring together local people of Lyndon Davis both Indigenous and European ancestry in a cooperative venture to explore the history of the Sunshine Coast and surrounds.

You Said It LNP promises

On his Facebook page, Andrew Powell states that the LNP will build a fourlane highway from Gympie to Cairns.

The LNP’s contribution to its signature policy is $20 million – a figure that would surface about 900m of bitumen.

Then there is a plan to fast track a second M1. It was the Pałaszczuk Labor government that actually negotiated with the federal government to obtain the funding for this infrastructure project.

Powell says you can trust the LNP to manage the economy. Ms Frecklington claims she will have the budget back in surplus within four years but hasn’t explained how she will do this. As more than half the electorate will vote before the election, Ms Frecklington should release her costings now.

The idea that a surplus is a sign of sound economic management is so yesterday. We see that the federal government is quite comfortable about having a $1.5 trillion gross deficit because the truth is, governments will never run out of money. LNP governments have used budget deficits for decades to cut jobs, privatise public utilities and outsource contracts.

If, however, the LNP remain obsessed with having a surplus, voters might remember that the Pałaszczuk Labor government delivered a surplus for five years. This year, most economies are in recession because of COVID-19.

With interest rates currently at 0.25 per cent and likely to get lower, most economists agree now is the time to borrow. Just as they did in managing the health crisis, the Palaszczuk government is following the advice of experts: borrowing money to keep Queenslanders working.

some time ago.

A lack of maintenance had made the trail virtually impassable but council finally remedied this some six months ago.

So it was surprising to see Cr Johnston and former Cr McKay performing an “opening” ceremony for the trail in the sole company of Unitywater chair Jim Soorly, whose company did at least play a decisive role in this outstanding project, which also includes a magnificent sweep of restored forest.

Missing were the brave local champions of the ecological parkland, which takes up more than a third of the 127 hectare Precinct estate.

One of the brightest of these shining lights, the late Dr Les Hall, who did so much to ensure the restoration of the wetland, surely deserved a mention.

But for Dr Hall and many others too numerous to mention, including the Maleny District Green Hills Fund, the Precinct would be housing estate with a golf course.

I was not in Maleny when these accomplishments took place but like many residents I have the pleasure of the hard-won results.

We should all be grateful.

A government for all Queensanders?

The Palaszczuk government’s election slogan ‘Keeping Queenslanders Safe’ needs putting into perspective as it should not just be the one issue of how the Queensland Government has managed our safety during the COVID-19 crisis that we are voting on.

As most Queenslanders have risen to the challenge magnificently, are keeping ourselves safe and respected the Health Department’s advice and acted upon it, we all deserve some credit for the results.

Palaszczuk government has operated which are disturbing and need to be considered by voters before the election and include the management of the following issues: 1. Hotel quarantine was mandatory for Queenslanders returning home.

However, footballers, celebrities and the rich have been given preferential treatment regarding quarantine.

Every day Australians in dire personal circumstances, with dying relatives and health issues, have been denied access to their loved ones, or the means of farewelling them.

2. Maleny Dairies being overlooked by the state government for a contract to supply milk products to hospitals in Metro North Health Services in January 2020. The contract was awarded to foreign-owned companies, ie, Frenchowned Lactalis, Australia and Lion Dairy, and was contrary to the government’s ‘buy local’ initiative in 2019.

3. The Queensland electoral roll was put at risk when the Palaszczuk government outsourced the coding role to China. Chinese-based coders will write critical software for the Queensland Electoral Commission.

This risks the security of one of the most critical aspects of our elections.

We are now at a defining moment regarding border closures and the abysmal financial consequences of these throughout Queensland and it is time for us to consider the broader picture.

As we go to the election hopefully common sense will prevail, our borders will reopen, businesses will commence trade and tourism will flourish again.

Pesticides, bees and you

A research report just a month ago from Illinois University USA states pesticides have made agriculture 48 times more toxic to insects in the past 25 years - so what does it do to our food?

The study looked at how neonic pesticides have affected crops in

America since their introduction.

Researchers have expressed serious concern about effects on bee populations. They looked at the amount of pesticides used in the country, the level of toxins found in honeybees and the persistence of pesticides within the environment. They concluded that neonics were responsible for 92 per cent of the increase in all toxicity between 1992 and 2014.

Neonics attack the nerve cells of insects, either killing them directly or compromising their behaviour thus shortening their lifespan. When neonicotinoids started in the early 2000s, beekeepers began reporting strange behaviour from bees, including trouble navigating and weaker immune systems.

The European Union has banned some of the most toxic neonics following a scientific risk assessment. They are also common in veterinary products such as tick control and pet flea collars.

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has a review but so far has not banned neonicotinoids in Australia.

They say “all neonicotinoids registered for use in Australia have been through the APVMA’s robust chemical risk assessment process and are safe and effective, provided products are used according to the label instructions.”

Not satisfactory enough as bees continue to die across the planet and I’m not sure about that word “robust”.

USA studies have also shown that neonicotinoids are behind the serious decline in bird biodiversity where the overall bird population has dropped by nearly a third since 1970 and grassland birds have declined by 53 per cent. The science shows that pesticides are damaging birds when they consume treated crop seeds and indirectly through the insects they feed upon. We continue the poisoning.

You Said It Cemetery signage

We recently attended a funeral with the internment at the Beerwah Cemetery.

Not being locals we had a job locating the cemetery even though there were signs either way towards the entrance stating it was 200m ahead.

The entrance is not easily noticeable, especially with a lot of surrounding traffic.

We would like this issue to be raised with the local council and a sign placed closer to the entrance and maybe have the entrance widened to make it more noticeable and accessible.

Hospital parking

I love the announcement by Greens MP Michael Berman that parking at all hospitals should be free for patients and staff. I know of many patients who find it really hard to afford parking at hospitals. I know of one lady who has to go there frequently because of ill health and she is unable to walk long distances. A trip to hospital is always such an ordeal for her - made even harder because of the high fees for parking.

So here is hoping that more hardworking Greens get elected to Queensland’s Parliament soon to, as Don Chipp used to say, “keep the bastards honest” and to make life easier for ordinary folk like patients and staff at hospitals.

Yes councillor

In his column in GC&M News (September 16) Cr Rick Baberowski made mention of the nearby suburbs of Caloundra South and the potential for Glasshouse Country townships to attract new visitors and customers.

Yes councillor, this will be a great opportunity, as long as council doesn’t grant the Coles Group approval to construct a shopping centre closer to Caloundra South on land outside council’s town planning scheme.

Over the years our townships have expanded in a slow and sustainable manner to meet the needs of population growth. In the short term, the proposed Beerwah Market Place expansion and the currently empty shops will meet this need.

With further growth, there will be the need for other retail services but this should be in the existing commercial precinct.

Political promises

It never ceases to amaze me that at election time the incumbent government announces a bucket full of promises. It makes me wonder what they have been doing since the last election, or the last two elections, or even 26 of the last 31 years. Surely these issues have been important to us for a long time. Not only for our own local benefit but also the benefit of the rest of the state.

If you are happy with the way Queensland has fared over the past three decades then you know how to vote. If you’re not happy then you also know how to vote.

Their unsympathetic refusals of exemptions from hotel quarantine impacted numbers of unfortunate sick people and their families and Queensland border closures have had far-reaching expensive commercial consequences. But their mismanagement of Queensland’s economy was evident before COVID-19 arrived to take its toll.

It was clear that Queensland Government’s financial position was already in bad shape and COVID became the Labor government’s excuse to take the undemocratic decision to forego the budget. No budget was a convenient step to eliminate the opportunity for the Parliamentary Opposition to debate and bring attention to Labor’s debt and mismanagement and their unlikely prospect of capable recovery in the next four years after the 2020 election.

Instead of a budget, the Palaszczuk government has made an election prop out of their economic recovery plan!

But expert scrutiny exposes lack of detailed four-year planning, which a responsible government should offer.

The economic recovery plan is no substitute for a budget presented to Parliament where Opposition scrutiny and questioning of government plans would have occurred. Announcement to the electorate of the government budget proposals should be democratically essential, particularly in an election year.

The Labor government has treated us all with disrespect and should be brought to account.

Why should voters support the Labor Party, which has refused to present a budget declaring its plans for the next four years? This lack of transparency and respect for voters has left their way wide open for more Labor fees and taxes!

I have watched with interest over the past weeks the major parties making promises and allocating budgets for ‘must do’ projects.

The question you have to ask yourself is why does it take an election for the majors to promise to do what they should have been doing over their years in power or opposition.

Many of us are jaded and have lost faith and respect in our politicians. We are accepting decisions made by politicians who show a lack of consistency, a lack of integrity and a lack of vision for the whole state.

As your One Nation candidate, I’m not here to make the grand promises that you continually hear from the majors.

I make this pledge to you, the people of the Glass House electorate. If you have a concern or an issue, then simply speak with me.

Give me the opportunity to work with you to find a solution.

Give me the opportunity to have your voice heard.

Give me the opportunity to utilise the skills and knowledge I have gained through the various careers I have had during my life to support you with a balanced, consultative approach.

Unlike many of our serving politicians, I am not a career politician. I am an everyday Australian who simply wants the best for the people of Glass House. I have real life skills across a multitude of careers and businesses.

I’m like most middle aged, ‘horizontally challenged’ men. I love my wife. I love my five kids. I love my sport. I love where I live. And I love the fact that I have had the opportunity to serve the communities around the Glass House electorate for more than 11 years.

In the past couple of months I’ve laid out a range of commitments to make those communities better, commitments I can’t wait to get stuck into should the LNP win government on October 31.

The LNP will give every car owner a $300 rego rebate (per vehicle) before Christmas. You’ve used your vehicles less this year due to COVID so we think you deserve a rebate.

Money you will hopefully use to stimulate the local economy – by buying your Christmas ham at the local butcher and shopping locally for your kids’ or grandkids’ gifts.

In Glass House, roads are a huge issue. Despite receiving extraordinary numbers of tourists, our roads have been neglected by the current Labor government who would rather lower speed limits than fix the roads.

I have committed to upgrading Beerburrum Road between Elimbah and Beerburrum and MalenyKenilworth Road between Maleny and Witta (and that’s on top of the upgrades around Cambroon that I secured earlier this year).

I’ve also promised flashing school zone lights – the gold standard of pedestrian safety near schools – at Mooloolah State School.

I value the health of locals too. Which is why I’m particularly proud of our commitments of $1 million to start construction on a hydrotherapy pool for Maleny and $800,000 towards Australia’s very first live-in eating disorder treatment facility in Mooloolah Valley – endED. This money will enable endED to purchase a second property to act as a step-out facility.

My commitments to this community come back to the core issues. Social justice, freedom of choice, the value of human life and the need to accept that we are all equal.

I believe that all individuals can and should have full, clear and accurate information from your doctor regarding every medical option, including the natural alternatives some may wish to explore.

For example, my doctor has never offered me a package insert to read, with all the risks, benefits and ingredients.

Instead, we are left to do our own research and usually find more questions than answers.

I believe this needs to change.

We need focussed, accurate education on health, nutrition and ways to boost our immune function for foundational physical and mental health, with equal options for pharmaceutical and natural therapies.

I am committed to supporting individuals, families and small businesses, as they are the fabric of our society and what connect us to one another.

These lockdowns have shown us how important that connection truly is, and we need to focus our resources into recovering that connection for ourselves and our future generations.

We can already see the breakdown in families, community, in mental health, and the lack of engagement with our youth.

Every person needs security, safety and connection to grow and thrive. When we can reconnect that for all individuals and families, we can overcome every hardship and pull through together with love and mutual respect.

This economic and emotional collapse could be our downfall, or our turning point for a better future, a chance to reset old patterns and make positive change that will benefit the vulnerable and strengthen our community.

The Glass House electorate has a lot to look forward to and I am excited to have the opportunity to bring that to fruition.

Dear undecided voter, I hope this letter finds you in good health, good spirits and a reasonable financial position – given the extraordinarily tough circumstances of 2020.

My name’s Brent Hampstead and I’m a member of the Labor Party.

I live on a little property in Maleny with my wife Christina. My mum’s family moved to the area back in 1908 but I grew up in the rough and tumble housing commission suburb of Woodridge, down in Logan.

I worked in the music industry most of my career, although the past few years I’ve been employed by the state government. You probably hear this almost every time you go to vote, but you have a really important decision to make this election.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has done an amazing job keeping Queenslanders safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. And now the Premier and her Labor team have a clear, comprehensive and fully funded plan to lead Queensland back on the path to economic prosperity.

That plan includes massive job-creating projects such as the Beerburrum to Nambour rail duplication, six-lanes for the Bruce Highway from Caboolture to Steve Irwin Way, the Beerwah State School intersection, improving Maleny-Kenilworth Road at Cambroon and spending millions in upgrades on the D’Aguilar Highway and Steve Irwin Way. Labor will hire record numbers of teachers, record numbers of police, more nurses, more doctors and more ambos.

Labor will help your kids get into work by offering free TAFE for anyone under 25, and a massive $140 million package to support small businesses.

Labor will build you a $35 million satellite hospital in Caboolture and a new PCYC. The equation is simple at this state election.

If you want to keep the trusted and respected Annastacia Palaszczuk as Queensland Premier, you need to vote Labor on October 31.

Democracy sausage is back

The Electoral Commission of Queensland has confirmed that fundraising sausage sizzles and cake stalls can go ahead on the October 31 election day.

Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said it was great to see the return of the democracy sausage but reminded electors that all COVID-19 health requirements were still relevant.

“Fundraising activities at election time are often an important activity for community organisations and schools,” Mr Vidgen said.

However, the onus is on the fundraising organisers and volunteers to ensure they are following the relevant COVID-19 guidelines.

distancing, good hand hygiene and regular cleaning must be maintained.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said that as long as everyone followed the rules it would be safe to vote.

“While many across the state would have already voted before election day, those in the community going out to vote have a few things to keep in mind,” Dr Young said.

“As always, if you’re sick, stay home.

“Take your voter information card with you and your own pen or pencil.

I was raised in asmall community along the once dirt roads of the Noosa hinterland. As a young adult, I moved to Brisbane to pursue my career as a structural drafter, soon overseeing global projects.

I have embarked on many adventures globally, although my most rewarding thus far has been my marriage and journey as a mother to my three young boys.

I recognise the intrinsic value of community and clean sustainable living, along with the critical importance of truth and transparency, not only in our personal relationships but in our government.

I am a passionate advocate for mental health, especially post-birth. I believe our birthing experience significantly affects our post-natal emotional wellbeing. This understanding led me to study as a post-birth doula, supporting women through the emotionally challenging journey into motherhood.

We all need to feel a sense of belonging within our family, which is further enhanced by our wider community. This is what drives me to solidify and strengthen families and communities. These are the things that drive us forward, offering us a sense of unity and purpose.

I am an enthusiastic, vocal supporter for freedom of choice. I absolutely agree that our decisions should be our choice. The freedom to choose medical options, or other, without coercion, discrimination, or financial ‘punishment is paramount to our independence. We see this happening when it comes to vaccination and birth especially.

As a voice for the Glass House community, along with ensuring local safety and road conditions I will be working closely with the community, providing access to holistic medicine, regenerative farming options and focussing in on sustainability in schools and new developments.

By investing in schools we’re ensuring the next generations will be one step ahead in sustainability and innovation. This sustainable approach allows for more funding to be invested into valuable resources and support within schools.

I will also be working hard to create educational sharing opportunities amidst our abundant community knowledge, offering access to a broad range of handson experiences and skills to all ages.

When my son was born, my wife and I started to see the world in a different way.

Kids will do that. They not only give you new responsibilities, they give you hopes and dreams.

About the same time, Queensland voted in the Newman LNP government. They held all Sunshine Coast seats, our MPs were made ministers and we thought “at last, our turn”.

We had high hopes but all we got were sackings and sell-offs, cuts and chaos.

We deserved better.

I’d grown up in Caloundra, went to school here, left and joined the Australian Defence Force, studied teaching at uni and returned to work here as a corrections officer.

I’ve always loved the place. And I want it to offer my son the same opportunities I had.

Not much different to thousands of others – a reasonably paid job to support the family, a roof over our heads, access to good education and quality health care, and the capability to put something away for retirement.

So, I decided to work towards making Beerwah, Landsborough, Glenview and Caloundra better places to live.

I rolled up my sleeves as a candidate, and I have had a few wins.

We’ve significant road upgrades under way with more to come, the Palaszczuk government has partnered with Australia Zoo to build new tourist facilities and will build a new 20km bike and walking trail.

If I can get these things done as a candidate, just imagine what I could do if you choose me as your MP? I’ll listen and act. I’ll work to create decent jobs, to grow our schools and hospitals, and to build new roads. I’ll get things done.

And I proudly stand with a government that during COVID-19 has put our health first and is now building our economic recovery.

The Greens is the only party that has a real plan to tackle climate change.

Environment and climate change are focal points of all our policies.

Our plan for economic recovery includes transitioning to 100% clean energy by 2030 by manufacturing solar panels, wind turbines and green steel with predominantly local product. So, money stays local.

We want all components of our electricity power networks to be socialised so that we can keep electricity prices down.

The Greens is the only party that does not take corporate donations, unlike the major parties, and therefore our interests are you.

Even from an economic perspective, coal and gas makes no sense.

Demand for thermal coal is significantly in decline while solar is now the cheapest energy source ever.

The major parties are not investing in the markets of the future because they take donations from the coal industry.

In recent months we have seen Caloundra taken seriously. Why? Because this election we are a marginal seat.

The major parties for the first time in possibly decades are not taking Caloundra for granted.

The best way to keep Caloundra marginal and at the forefront of the major parties’ minds is to give neither major party your first preference.

Give Greens your first preference and then mark every box in your preferred order.

Your vote cannot be wasted. If Greens are not elected, then your vote will go to your second choice but it will send a clear message to major parties that your vote is not guaranteed and you want action on climate change.

We want to protect the Pumicestone Passage by ensuring that Halls Creek is not developed, and locals’ knowledge and expertise is considered.

Key policies I propose …

Zero homelessness.

Zero unemployment.

Reform of our unjust and archaic system of taxation.

Online voting or via your smartphone. I have been recommending this to the ECQ since 2009. That way we could vote more regularly and frequently more often on more issues. Isn’t that why we have elections in the first place?

There are only eight candidates in the Caloundra electorate, which means I need just above 12.5% to win office in this state election.

Reforming the government tendering procurement process to be on a more business-to-business like basis, rather than one about saving the whale and telling you how to run your business.

Labor introduced nine new taxes in the last three years. LNP promise of no new taxes is unsatisfactory compared to my proposal to remove 20 of both Labor and LNP taxes (including income tax and GST); and stamp duty to be replaced by a prototype GGST or gifts, goods and services tax of 0.5% on every transaction here in Queensland.

My three daughters with their good looks and intelligence coming from their Daddy have all passed through university. Neither the school teacher, government worker, professional politician from which most if not all Labor and LNP candidates are drawn are not up to the task of regenerating our economy.

You don’t need to be Albert Einstein to realise that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the height of folly.

I urge you please to suspend your disbelief and to vote 1 Mike Jessop and place your own free will preferences according to those parties most likely to support my policies in government.

It’s do-able. I implore you please to vote Mike Jessop (independent Whig Party).

You will not be disappointed.

Along with these core values and ideals, of course there are the fundamental state concerns that we are also abreast of regarding our area such as roads and infrastructure, aged care and education reform and support.

At present there has also been a false sense of security economically as the government has temporarily thrown money and relief to some sectors of the community. This may win votes but is unsustainable going forward to rebuild our community and country back to an acceptable level without crippling debt to our future generations.

With this in mind, I plan to work hard to leave a healthy and prosperous place for my children and future grandchildren to grow up in.

Second Bruce Highway You may have seen that the Queensland Labor Government are proposing to construct a second Bruce Highway, 500km west of here through Roma.

I am deeply concerned about what this proposal will mean for the Labor State Government’s already limited investment in infrastructure on the Sunshine Coast. There are important upgrades underway already on the Bruce Highway and Steve Irwin Way for which the State Government contributes 20% of the funding and many more of our local State Government roads are in desperate need of improvement. If this extremely expensive inland highway goes ahead it will be of no benefit whatsoever to Hinterland residents but may divert funding from much needed local infrastructure.

If the State Labor Government are re-elected I will urgently seek a guarantee from them that this proposal will not affect the current and planned infrastructure upgrades on the Coast and I will report back here on their response.

A fair go for farmers I want to see a fair go for our region’s farmers, so I am supporting the push by our local dairy industry to create an official Fair Go Dairy logo. This would help you buy your milk from brands who give farmers a fair price. This logo is being considered right now by the ACCC, and I was proud to provide a letter of support for the proposal.

The idea is being supported locally by Maleny Dairies, Maleny Cheese and Woombye Cheese Company and I want to congratulate them on this important initiative.

Support local events It’s been fantastic to see various community groups in our townships up and running again and offering residents opportunities to get out and about. Under COVID Safe practices, the Landsborough Markets are operating every Saturday from 8am-1pm at the Landsborough Hall, the Peachester Heritage Centre has recommenced their open days on the last Sunday of the month 10am-3pm behind the Peachester Community Hall, and there is a wonderful opportunity to support the inaugural Beerburrum Art Show exhibition on Saturday, November 14 10am-4pm at the Beerburrum Hall.

Major grants awarded Congratulations to the Division 1 community groups who were successful in the latest round of the council’s major grants. Throughout the region, 102 grants were awarded including the Glass House Mountains Community Hall, with $12,000 to help with repairs and maintenance, and Aura Connected, with $3,000 for the World Wetland Day 2021 event. Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council Major grants awarded

Congratulations to the Division 5 community groups who benefitted from the latest round of council’s major grants.

Recipients include the Montville Tennis Club with $15,000 to help upgrade amenities, Friends of the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens with $15,000 to help with the creation of the Richmond birdwing butterfly and vine trail, Maleny Show Society with $13,000 to help with pavilion restoration, the Barung Landcare Association with $12,420 to help install a solar power system for water pump and irrigation, and the Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club with $10,000 to help with new safety fencing.

Community planting day Council is holding a community planting day on Wednesday, November 4 at Avocado Land Park in Maleny.

Lend a hand to the Avocado Land Bushcare Group as they work to replace the weeds with native plants to make the park a better place to live for local wildlife.

This park provides an important wildlife corridor and wetland environment for frogs. There are two session times, 8.30-9.30am and 10-11am.

Hinterland Heritage

Isn’t it fabulous!

Frocks from the 1920s, 1940s swimwear and 1980s active wear are celebrated in the 2021 Heritage Calendar, Isn’t it fabulous: Celebrating fashion we love to remember. It features 15 images spanning Sunshine Coast fashion from the 1910s to 1980s.

Stories behind early place names and features As we go past places and roads throughout the hinterland we often don’t give much thought to the reason for their names. This month we thought it would be interesting to share some stories behind the early names given to places and features that may pique further interest in the history of our area.

Local historian Ron Gillinder from the Glasshouse History Group shared some transcripts of conversations he had with local gentleman Bill Ferris (who died in 2013), the son of Jack Ferris (19012002), who was the last resident of Bankfoot House.

Bill shared his recollections of a number of local places and the reasons he thought they were named accordingly.

Corduroy Crossing Named around the site of an original log crossing.

During the 1800s it was common to have logs butted together to assist in water crossings. Such a crossing was built just south west of Bankfoot House on the original Old Gympie Road route to aid coaches crossing the section of Coonowrin Creek that became known as Priest’s Water Hole.

Priest’s Water Hole This water hole is situated opposite the intersection of Marshs and Old Gympie roads at Glass House Mountains. In 1888 Father Canali came to the district once every few months. The story goes that his horse stopped on the crossing to drink from the water hole but missed its footing and the priest fell over the head of the horse into the water. Apparently after nearly drowning in the waterhole, the sodden priest walked up to Bankfoot House and locals named

the place where the incident happened Priest’s Water Hole.

Porridge Pot Located to the south of Marshs Road was a corner that was called the Porridge Pot. It was a swampy bog-like area that you couldn’t run cattle through because they would sink up to their belly. Peachtrees Road Now known as Mt Beerwah Road was the original road to Peachester.

Tiger’s Pub Located on Old Gympie Road, Tiger’s Pub was named because years ago a bullocky driving his bullock team along Old Gympie Road had a lead bullock named Tiger. At a low point between Beerburrum-Woodford Road and Lookout Drive, Tiger would stop for a drink, regardless of the wishes of the bullocky.

Two of the winners are hinterland locals, Gwen Davis and Jenny Catalano, who were thanked for sharing their personal photos for all our community to enjoy.

The Isn’t it fabulous: Celebrating fashion we love to remember 2021 Heritage Calendar is now available for purchase from the council’s library branches and customer service centres for only $6.

The winners’ photos are credited in the calendar and they received large canvas prints of their winning entries.

Hinterland Families Local Junior Masterchef, Tiffany Szerenyi MasterChef and Junior MasterChef Australia are instantly recognisable brands in the reality television space, with huge followings gripped by the skill, drama and competition of the shows’ contestants. Local Tiffany Szerenyi, 14, is appearing in the current season of Junior MasterChef Australia. She recently shared some insights about herself, her obvious passion for cooking and the Junior MasterChef Australia experience.

Q: Where did your love of cooking come from?

I’ve always loved cooking since I was a young child and my mum has always had me and my sister in the

kitchen with her helping out ever since we were able to hold a spoon! I love baking and that probably comes from my mum’s influence as she has made cakes for friends and family for many years as a hobby. I also have a Hungarian background and love all types of Hungarian food.

Q: What are your favourite dishes to make?

I love having friends over and cooking for them, and a simple carbonara with lots of bacon and cheese is one of my favourite dishes to share. I don’t make it the traditional way with egg yolk. Instead I use cream and add chicken and mushrooms, which

Q: What made you want to go on Junior MasterChef Australia?

I’ve always enjoyed watching the adult MasterChef series and just love cooking. Watching the back-to-win season of MasterChef Australia earlier this year, an ad came on looking for contestants who might be interested in going on Junior MasterChef Australia.

I Googled how to apply. As part of my application I had to submit a video about a savoury dish I make, so I talked about making carbonara.

Q: Tell us about what happened next and filming?

After I submitted my application, someone from the show rang my mum to say I was through to the next round.

I then did a Skype call with a producer talking a bit more about myself and a sweet dish I love to make, which was croquembouche. This took me to the next round where 24 kids aged from 10-14 were flown to Melbourne where we did a little cooking for the judges as

Q: How would you describe your experience?

It was a dream come true for me and a lot of fun, though it was a bit stressful with the pressure of being in a top-level cooking competition. I’ve had a few extra challenges as I have jjuvenile arthritis, so it was emotionally challenging for me with the long days and pressure. I probably learnt the most about dealing with personal emotions like perseverance and to trust in yourself. You want your dish to be the best but you also want others to do well too. I made some great friends during filming.

Controlling the light with STEM Contributed by Kim Fillery The future is certainly bright at Peachester State School! With thanks to University of the Sunshine Coast students, year 5 and 6 students at Peachester State School have been learning to use technology to control light.

The lessons and resources provided students with opportunities to learn how to program an Arduino, develop their computational thinking skills and deepen their understanding of STEM careers.

Students had the opportunity to participate in a design and technologies project at school.

They were asked to create a visual sound system for the deaf and hardof-hearing by designing an electrical system using an Arduino and programming it to control light (colour, on/ off rhythm, brightness) matched to music.

By Sonia Isaacs Clark Cecilie (Cee) Schiotz is one of the key organisers behind the upcoming Maleny drive-in cinema community event and Bloomhill Cancer Care fundraiser on Saturday, November 14 at the Maleny Showground.

As a client at the Bloomhill Centre in Buderim, Cee said she organised the event as a combined celebration and acknowledgment of the incredible support provided by Bloomhill’s services.

It was also a way of marking the final year of her involvement with River School after 16 years as a parent, and celebrating renewed energy to organise community events post diagnosis.

Cee said she was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2018, with most of her treatments finalised in July this year. She connected with Bloomhill in the early stages of her diagnosis and, although she was initially reluctant to accept the identity of being a cancer patient, she found the Buderim facility a beautiful and welcoming place of support and respite.

“In the first few months it was quite overwhelming dealing with the shock of diagnosis, being in a vulnerable stage of treatment and not wanting the new identity associated with my diagnosis,” Cee said.

“It took me a while to utilise the wonderful services offered at Bloomhill as I had to transition to a new identity away from my previous self. However, when I finally did go, it was the saving grace for me.”

Cee found the weekly art therapy session incredibly beneficial as she was able to use the creative outlet as a way to process what she was going through.

Landsborough barber hopes to repeat win It has been a pretty big year for the owner of Landsborough’s Route 23 Barbershop, Leesa Petfield.

Last year, the Landsborough business owner won the title of Ms Fitness Australia Bodybuilding – her first time competing in the bodybuilding division and first Australian title win. Next month she will again be competing at the 2020 Ms Fitness Australia International Pro/Am to be held at the Gold Coast.

iCompete Natural Sunshine Coast Classic bodybuilding champ her motivated to compete, she laughed “just craziness”. But, it’s more than that.

Leesa’s journey into the sport started many years ago when she went through a huge lifestyle change.

“I had lost over 40kg, took up running and went on to complete my personal training certificates,” Leesa said.

“During this, I had watched a couple of bodybuilding competitions and it really piqued my interest in the sport.

In 2016 I participated in my first competition and haven’t looked back,” she said.

“It’s both physically and mentally challenging but it’s a great sport and, really, while you’re up there competing against others, you really are doing it to better yourself.”

It’s amazing to see how passion and determination go hand-in-hand. While Leesa’s preparation for this year’s competition is shorter compared to the usual lead up (12 weeks as opposed to 16+ weeks), she said that seeing the changes and pushing through the challenges made it worthwhile.

Leesa is up at 2.30am six days a week to train for two hours in the gym, including a 25-minute high intensity session and 1.5 hours of weight training, Leesa then heads off for a full day of work at her Landsborough business.

Her dedication to her sport is impressive and she tackles the challenges with such a down-to-earth nature. When asked what she is most looking forward to on competition day

Ms Fitness Australia 2019 bodybuilding champ she said, without hesitation: “Donuts, I’m doing it for the donuts”.

Regardless of the outcome at Ms Fitness Australia, Leesa will be celebrating in November as Route 23 Barbershop marks six months in business.

Then it started with a report from China … and the rest is history. We moved from knowing into a territory of unknowing. We have learned, and are learning, how to live with this dichotomy.

I went on spiritual retreats led by contemplative monks and was introduced to a different form of communicating with God. This journey has continued for many years. The bottom line is that I have found that I move between knowing and unknowing.

There is much in the Bible that is, as it were, set in stone, for instance that God is love. That does not change and it does become more real as the years go by. But there are other things that have opened my mind, things that I never realised.

For example, that Christians do not have exclusive rights on God. God is universal and He reveals Himself in so many different ways. This is taking away my arrogance when I speak to people of different faiths and beliefs.

When I listen closely, I can hear the similarities come through. This was only possible when I stopped trying to force my brand of religion on others.

We serve a wonderful God but He is far beyond our full understanding and our journey of getting to know more and more about Him is endless.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in November

Propagate daylilies from any plantlets that have developed along the flower stalks.

Just plant them into a pot of quality potting mix and wait for them to grow.

• Rains and warm temperatures will see a big increase in grasshopper and caterpillar numbers in the garden. Pick them off and squash them, or use a pyrethrum or bacteria based spray.

• Time to prune your azaleas and dead head roses to encourage continual flowering.

• Zucchinis may be showing powdery mildew (a fungal disease) on their leaves. Spray with Mancozeb or try the one part milk to ten parts water tecnique.

Once your spring flowering bulbs such as jonquils and daffodils have died down, lift out the bulbs, clean off the dirt and store them in a dry, dark place.

• Keep the water up to hydrangeas as they develop new buds. That way you’ll have lovely full flowers.

• If you need to, top dress the lawn now. Don’t cover the lawn too deep or too completely. It’s better to do a couple of light coverings a month apart.

• Keep an eye out for bronze orange bugs on your citrus. Knock them off and squash them or spray with Confidor or Yates Nature’s Way Citrus & Ornamental Spray (containing pyrethrin).

Summer prune mulberry for a second fruit crop.

Cut back new growth by a third and the new growth will produce flowers and fruits.

• Fruit flies will start to appear. Keep them at bay by cleaning up old rotten fruits and using a splash bait such as Eco-Naturalure.

• Prune back your grevilleas by a third to promote bushiness.

• Prune wisteria, jasmine and other vigorous climbers when they finish flowering.

• It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits.

• As your passionfruit flowers, keep up the watering to ensure juicy fruits.

• Keep spraying your developing mangoes with Mancozeb to prevent the disease anthracnose.

• If you grow lettuce just stick with the mignonette and fancy leaf varieties until next autumn. Cos and iceberg are cooler season varieties.

How are your tanks looking?

Locals who aren’t connected to town water are being encouraged by Unitywater to check their tanks and book water deliveries.

Katherine Gee, Unitywater’s executive manager customer and community, said that after combined South East Queensland dam levels dropped below 60% in September, it was timely for those who relied on tank water to consider topping up.

“It’s getting warmer, dam levels have dropped and it’s dry across our region,” Ms Gee said.

“Despite the La Nina forecast and predictions for a wet summer, rain may not fall hard or soon enough, or in the right places.”

Ms Gee said.Unitywater fill stations for commercial water carriers were open 24 hours a day, with the exception of Landsborough, which was open 6am–10pm.

Unitywater also provides access to community fill stations across the service region where residents can fill containers for $4.35 per 1,000 litres of water. These are also open 24 hours a day.

The closest one for Glasshouse Country and Blackall Range residents is at 33-49 Zealey Road Nambour.

Environment Students turn talk into action Over the past few months, 12 Beerwah State High School students from years 7 to 11 have set up a new school-based environmental group under the guidance of teacher Donna Grant.

Donna said the group had already kicked off some excellent school-based systems, including a worm farm, a drink container recycling initiative, ink cartridge recycling and some paper/cardboard and soft plastic recycling measures.

Donna, who is also a member of the War on Waste (WOW) Glasshouse Country group, said the students were a keen group of environmentally conscious young people who were demonstrating great leadership skills.

The students were helping to raise awareness of sustainability that was positively impacting both students and teachers at the school, with many of the ideas also being carried through to home environments.

“Our group recently started working with Sunshine Coast Council with their Waste 2 Resource Education Program

that addresses waste management issues within the school, and we work collaboratively to empower and achieve good practice and behaviour change,” Donna said.

During September the group worked with a council Waste 2 Resource representative, completing a litter audit that involved sorting through ten playground waste bins and four wheelie bins of litter to determine the types and volume of waste generated by the school community.

Donna said the students had also prepared a video for the school’s PBL lesson (positive behaviour for learning) that showed better ways to keep the school grounds free of litter, as well as information on some of the nasty effects litter can have on ecosystems.

Future initiatives include exploring more efficient water and electricity management, and the possibility of planting more gardens around the grounds to attract and feed native animals.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Here be dragons

By Jane MacGibbon I have some helpers when I’m gardening these days. I don’t use any chemicals so my veges are a little vulnerable to insect attack, therefore my helpers are very welcome.

They are two beautiful eastern water dragons who follow me round and snap up any insects I stir while I am planting or pulling weeds.

These prehistoric-looking reptiles have even laid their tiny rubbery white eggs in the corner of one of my raised beds, so hopefully there will be babies hatching soon.

The Australian water dragon (Intellagama lesueurii) has two subspecies: the eastern (I. lesueurii lesueurii) and the Gippsland water dragon (I. lesueurii howittii). Both feed on insects, worms, snails, small reptiles, frogs and aquatic insects, and also fruits and other vegetation.

These dragons grow to about a metre long, with impressive tails making up two-thirds of their bodies, and nostrils on the top of their noses, both adaptations to their semi-aquatic lives.

Flowing water with ample tree cover and basking sites appear to be the key

to habitat preference for this species, which can stay submerged for up to an hour if threatened by predators.

Male dragons develop a red tinge to their chests, with this colour intensifying during the breeding season.

They defend a territory and a harem of females, carrying out an impressive series of head bobs and arm waves to discourage other intruding males. The females lay around a dozen eggs in an excavated hole in sandy soil above the flood line.

These will hatch in approximately three months. The young are miniature replicas of the adults and are able to fend for themselves as soon as they hatch. I am hoping to see some of these babies in the flesh very soon!

I have been a rainforest conservationist for 40 years and an invasive weed consultant for 18 years here on the range.

I used to run many invasive weed workshops before retiring. However, given it is so heartbreaking to see our general landscape disappearing under invasive weeds, I have decided to start my workshops again.

Without the right information it is very difficult to get started and to know how to work smart not hard. To win the battle against invasive weeds the right information makes it much easier.

We are so lucky to live in a beautiful region where we can still recognise our native (endemic) vegetation, which supports our wildlife. But it is getting harder to do so because of invasive weeds.

Woody weeds like privet (which is also an extremely serious health hazard) and camphor laurel set seed every year and will always produce hundreds of thousands of seeds and potential seedlings, whereas our stunning native rainforest trees may only set seed every four to five years.

Our region is already profoundly out of balance and our native trees that support our wildlife are having a battle

to stay viable.

Dealing with weeds is not that difficult.

It is knowing where and when to start.

The morning session will be about the weeds of the range and the afternoon session will discuss control methods and techniques and answer questions.

Women’s Cricket Contributed by Mick Schofield The Glasshouse Rangers were host to Cooroy for the opening round of the women’s cricket season.

After winning the toss, Glasshouse captain Kim Howden chose to bowl first.

The Cooroy women got off to a steady start, not losing a wicket until one of the openers retired hurt. This left the Glasshouse team the opportunity they needed to start to take some vital wickets.

Thirteen-year-old Jasmin Baartz was the first to take a wicket, then 14-year-old Anastasia Maher went on to take the first five wicket haul by a

5 for 9 off 5.5 overs.

Kim Howden also pitched in with 3 for 14 off 5 overs.

All the players bowled very well and were just as good in the field with some fine individual efforts restricting Cooroy to 136. Glasshouse got off to a solid start losing the first wicket at 24. Mel Taller scored 23, Ash Topfer finished on 30 not out and Kim rounded off a fine game with 42.

Shilo Hill finished the innings with 11 and unfortunately our team fell just 8 short of the target on 129.

However, it was a very promising start to the season.

Contributed by Helen Weil The hard courts at Beerwah Sportsground are getting a serious tidy up as a result of $65,000 in successful applications for both the sportsground and Beerwah State High School in the last round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants.

Beerwah Sportsground received $35,000 to upgrade the lighting on the hard courts to competition standard. Beerwah High School received a further $30,000 to complete the resurfacing of the courts. Half were done last year and this latest grant will complete the full job.

The hard courts, built on the sportsground, are a shared facility, with the school maintaining and using the courts during school hours and the community having access at other times.

The good news is that the hard courts will be looking spick ’n’ span and fully renovated by the end of the year, including new backboards and hoops.

The community is urged to make use of these multi-purpose courts out of school hours, weekends and during school holidays.

Local groups wanting to start a tennis or basketball club or other activity but need a suitable location should consider the courts as a venue.

Local people wanting an occasional casual hire of the courts for a game of tennis, netball or basketball are welcome.

Sport Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Friday, October 9: The Wildcats played top team the ZTA Novas at home.

On this occasion the Novas were just too strong, coming away with a straight sets win. There were some exciting points, lots of laughs and great sportsmanship. The team was Libby Howlett, Sonia Douglas, Jenie Riding and Pauline Fraley. The Whistlers played at Caloundra against the Hot Chillies. It was windy and everyone was running everywhere during the rallies. The game started with two tie breaks and it was a long day. We struggled but it was good to be back on the court after a few weeks off.

Score was 48-28 games, 0-8 sets.

Team was Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Brenda Warner and Maree Hooley.

Sunday, October 11: Lacking in manpower but not enthusiasm, Witta Wompoos competed in their last round match of the 2020 Sunshine Coast veterans’ competition with a loss to a consistent Gympie Silver team. With a number of players absent the team of John Poole, Andrew Blowes, Jim and Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner and Donna Kuskopf could not reel in the Gympie team. A number of tie break sets were the name of the day with five being contested and only two going our way. The resulting score of 64-53 games gave the win to Gympie.

The consistent and steady play of Jim throughout the day relegated him to man of the match. Another season over for the Wompoos but many thanks to all our players over the season, Anthony de Waard, Denis O’Neil, Noel George and Phil Blunden. We are looking forward to a break and then a revitalised 2021 season which will hopefully include our compatriot from over the ditch, Hayden Craven, and a

Over the last two weeks we have formed teams for the twilight bowls competition which starts on Wednesday, October 28.

We have 15 teams keen and ready to play so we’re almost full. If you’d like to play fun, social bowls, come along on a Wednesday night at 5.45pm and we’ll get you a game.

The highlights of last Wednesday were the barbeque team of Tony Yorkston, Ben Fawns and Steve Porter who certainly improved their bowling skills from last week by winning their game against an out-of-form Musketeers team.

Friday, October 16: Whistlers played at Witta against Maroochydore Phoenix.

It was a perfect warm day and no wind. We had lots of long games.

Some games went to deuces and every point was very close. It was a long day but we had a good win. Score was 4821 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore. Annie Quarmby, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats played the Caloundra Skylarks at the new Caloundra Tennis Centre. Annie Stewart, Sonia Douglas, Pauline Fraley and Libby Howlett enjoyed playing at the new centre, which is absolutely amazing and the girls played well.

Unfortunately, Caloundra were just a little too good, winning 44-31 games.

Wednesday, October 21: A very slow start for the Wagtails against Maroochydore TTs but by the second half the Wagtails came back firing on all cylinders. Unfortunately, it rained and the rest of the day was cancelled.

As we had already played more than four sets, Maroochydore TTs were the winners on the day. Thanks to Jan Maguire, Cynthia Garvie, Gerry Gabriel and Sonia Douglas.

On Thursday, October 22 the lawns were full again despite the threat of rain. Nick played some brilliant croquet to beat Ken Barker and Kath 17-7. Alice and Bev played well but were beaten by Priscilla Vickers and Wallace 7-9. Vince and Val beat Miggy Mackey and Sarah 15-13 in a good game. The rain stayed away and it was an enjoyable day. On Friday afternoons we play Scroungers where each bowler gets a handicap.

Recent winners have been Jim King, Liz Williams, John Williams, David Robson (twice) but the handicapper is analysing his results and a blood sample may be requested next week if his form continues, Relma Godfrey, Mick Bulger and Sally Squires.

In the last two weeks we have sent teams to play at Kilcoy and Woodford and whilst they played very well, they narrowly missed out on winning a prize.

This week we hold our monthly pairs competition were the local players try to stop visiting teams from taking home the glory, the raffle prizes and the trophies.

It has been good to get some rain on our artificial green as it smooths the

surface and settles the dust as well as encouraging our flowers and shrubs to bloom at the club. Heavy showers before and after a game is acceptable, during a game is unacceptable!

Bill Clinton, George Bush and Donald Trump were set to face a firing squad in a small central American country. Bill Clinton was the first to be placed against the wall and just before the order was given he yelled: “EARTHQUAKE”. The firing squad fell into a panic and Bill jumped over the wall and escaped.

George Bush was the second one placed against the wall. The squad was reassembled and George pondered what he had just witnessed. Before the order was given George yelled: “TORNADO”.

Again the squad fell apart and George slipped over the wall.

Finally, Donald Trump was placed against the wall. He thought: “I see the pattern here, just scream out something about a disaster and jump the wall”. He confidently refused a blindfold and as the firing squad aimed he smugly yelled: “FIRE”.
