ell just in case you weren’t aware, this week’s local public holiday is for the Maleny Show, and I can’t

wait.

Not everyone gets to claim a day at the show as working! Although I am not sure if I will be able to claim show bags or a dagwood dog on petty cash.

Even though I am a ‘little bit scared’ of birds, I really love getting the chance to see all of the gorgeous poultry (yes I am very brave when they are in cages).

And I love checking out all the displays in the Show Pavilion.

I think it is great that people have taken the time to make / produce / grow something and then are willing to share it with the rest of us.

Show Dance success At the Maleny Show Dance, held on May 17 at the Showgrounds Pavilion, the winners were crowned for each of the categories including Miss Show Girl – who needs to be aged between 18 to 29 years – as well as the Junior Show Princess, who is aged 15 to 17 years.

Concerns about Kondalilla zip-line

The Queensland State Government last week announced the preferred tender for the proposed tourism zip-line development within Kondalilla National Park at Montville.

The Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) remains concerned that the high environmental and scenic values of the National Park will be at risk.

“The introduction of commercial activities which are likely to compromise significant conservation values and impact on the passive enjoyment of millions of visitors is extremely inappropriate,” said Narelle McCarthy of SCEC. “SCEC is supportive of the right mix of tourism opportunities for the Sunshine Coast.

“These special places must also be respected for the important role they play in conserving the region’s declining biodiversity and as refuges for threatened species. National Parks are the cornerstone of conservation and should be managed and protected for these values.

“A well-operated zip-line could be suitably located in an area outside of National Park.

This would still offer a nature-based experience and provide benefits to local businesses and communities,” Ms McCarthy explained.

SCEC is particularly concerned at the manner in which this proposal has been conducted.

No other site has been considered and only preliminary conceptual documents have been produced before going into a state government tender process. This makes the proposal ‘commercial-in-confidence’ effectively excluding community consultation and necessary scrutiny.

Vale David Evans 1927 - 2014

David (or Taffy to his family) Evans, was born in the Beerburrum hospital on January 6, 1927.

He was raised on the farm at Red Road Beerburrum with big brother Jim and sister’s Wynn, Margaret and Lyn. This is where he learned the skills and determination needed to make a living on the land, as the family stuck at it to make a life on the soldier settlement block.

He completed his schooling at Elimbah, leaving when he was 14. During the 1940’s and early 1950s he took on all types of work including working in a timber mill, felling timber, doing seasonal work, fruit picking working in the sugar mill in Innisfail before working full time with the QLD Forestry Department and farming at Caboolture.

In 1954 David took up farming on his own block at Beerburrum, and after six months he married Lois Gibbs.

With 10 shillings in the bank they went about building a farm, a life and a family out of a bush

Pineapples, chokos and chooks provided enough income for them to live on.

David always had a strong sense of community and this combined with his work ethic saw him working tirelessly for many community organisations.

This included sporting organisations, including tennis, as well as setting up the Glasshouse Bowls green.

He was a member the Tibrogargan chapter of the Freemasons Lodge. He was very involved in the Beerburrum Primary School, and was on the P&C committee.

David was on the Beerburrum Hall committee.

And he was also very involved with Bee Gees Soccer Club from its inception.

He was an active supporter of Met Caloundra SLSC. Was a member of the Caloundra conservation society and Noosa National Parks Association, and was an honorary Wildlife Officer for National Parks in this area.

Sadly David suffered from Dementia and he spent the last five years in Embracia at Deception Bay where he was cared for, receiving excellent care and attention.

Taffy passed away peacefully late Saturday night, May 17, surrounded by family.

A Service to celebrate his life will be held at Gregson & Weight Caloundra on Friday, May 30 at 10.00am.

Be inspired by winter writers’ toolkit The Range Authors and Writers Support group will be holding a ‘Winter Writers Toolkit’, a weekend of writers’ workshops on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8.

The workshops will provide tools that will inspire and provoke new and seasoned writers and will be held at the Earth Room, LIFT gallery, 926 Maleny Montville Road, Maleny from 9.00am – 5.00pm each day.

The workshop sessions include Treasure Hunt, Tools to find hidden gems through research which will be run by Dale Jacobsen.

Spotlight on Saboteurs will be presented by Sally Lattin, who will show you how to shine the light into all those places that the voices hide that get in the way of moving ahead with your writing.

Then to finish the day, special guest Jill Morris renowned local author, editor and publisher with RAW members Dale Jacobsen, Sally Lattin, Robin Clayfield and Alice Hungerford will participate in a Panel discussion – Getting Published.

The Sunday morning workshop is titled Writing for change and survival – How can we do

sustainable writing?

Followed by the Writers Spark – Stimulate your brain, energise your writing, kindle your creativity and your work flow.

And the weekend will be finished off with a panel discussion on self-publishing.

More locals taking on the Kokoda challenge

Since bringing you the story of locals Jo Davies and Louise Bond we have been contacted by Helen Skerman from Glass House Mountains who was keen to share with readers that there are also two other local teams taking on the gruelling 96 kilometre Kokoda Challenge to be held in the Gold Coast Hinterland later in the year.

The Bootcampers – who are Helen Skerman, Kerry Roach, Jason Marshall and Mat Steel and Menace to Sobriety made up of Tanya Cashin, Marie Saliba, Chris Eaton and Dave Harbison.

The Challenge is not for the fainthearted, so it isn’t that surprising that the common link for both teams is fitness and training, all team members have been regular ‘bootcampers’ for the past few years.

The group meets three times a week at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club for the physical challenge that is boot camp.

Tanya Cashin is participating in her second Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge and it is through her completing last year’s event (in 27 hours) that gave the others the inspiration to get involved and form their own teams.

The compulsory fundraising of $1,500.00 per Kokoda Challenge team is certainly a fantastic way to support the really valuable Kokoda Youth Program.

The Bootcamp group that train at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club rain, hail or shine However, apart from being a worthwhile cause, as individuals they are participating for a variety of reasons.

It is a way of honouring the Kokoda legacy of mateship, courage, endurance and sacrifice and some of them have personal connections with family members serving in the ADF and participating in modern conflicts.

“As we train and prepare for the event we know that it will only be together that we will make it as a team to the finish line,” Helen said.

If you would like to support the team's fundraising efforts there is a donation tin at the Coochin Creek Co-op and also keep your eyes out for their upcoming sausage sizzles.

Shedding some light on the matter

Recently Beerwah local John Jennings sent us the photo below – asking if GCNews could find out from Councillor Baberowski when we can expect to see the last of the old power poles and line.

The councillor has advised that If the weather has been good, this work should be completed on between 6.00pm and 6.00am Tuesday, May 27. The final work on the new electrical wiring and the new lighting poles installation along Simpson Street (from the Beerwah Surgery to Beerwah Books and Bits – shop side) is planned for Thursday, May 29 from 6.00am – 5.00pm.

“It is also worth noting we also took the opportunity to include permanent fittings for street banners on single light poles, which was also called for as part of the community consultation process and will contribute to the ongoing colour and animation of the new streetscape,” Cr Baberowski said.

Big plans for Jae's Place Big plans are underway for the site of the previously named Mooloolah Country Club.

GCNews caught up with new owner John Pearson and found out more about what plans are in the pipeline.

John lived in Mooloolah for over 10 years and it was during this time that he initially saw the potential in the venue.

With previous experience in successfully doing up an establishment John Pearson from Jae's Place interstate, a trade (previously Mooloolah Country and management Club) background and seeking a new challenge - six weeks ago he finalised negotiations and purchased the nearly two acre property with an aim to revamp the site and create a family orientated venue with a difference.

To be renamed Jae’s Place (using the first letters of his and two daughters Ashlynn and Emily's names) John hopes to create an inviting space that people can come for a meal, relax and be entertained.

Using local designers, the next stage will include the interior fit out and establishment of the bar and kitchen. Everything will be modernised with the intention of an end of July opening.

To mark World Turtle Day, Unitywater and Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital are joining forces to challenge primary school students to reduce their plastic waste by getting back to drinking tap water.

Kids of all abilities cross the finish line a champion and everyone who participates takes home a medal.

When local 9-year-old Thomas Robins who suffers with Cerebral Palsy, heard about this event to be held at Kawana in May, he was keen to take on the challenge.

Family friend Una Robinson who went along on the day to support Thomas said, this was a first time experience for Thomas. When he initially arrived and was preparing for the event, along with the other 1,500 children, he appeared a little daunted by all the attention of the crowds and well wishers, she said.

“However once the competition began he embraced the occasion along with all the other

TRYathlete Thomas Robins kids in his age group completing the swim.

“He then used his handcylce to complete the 3km cycling section and then went on to do the walking/running stage where he used his disability walker.

“He walked the whole distance of 500 metres of the set course with no short cuts taken,” said Una. “Thomas’s very early pensive face changed dramatically to one of amazing smiles of satisfaction as he approached the finish line at the end.”

As Thomas was competing, he was accompanied

by Dale (his motivating buddy). There were also life savers were present in the pool to ensure the safety of all children.

Thomas is really proud of his medal and the polo shirt autographed by Australian cricketer Brett Lee and an Australia Rugby League Player Kurt Gidley.

Congratulations to Thomas. Maybe his efforts will inspire others to enter the next TRYathlon.

PM encourages $140 power hike What is the RET?

So when the report is handed down in July or mid August, GUESS WHAT … it will ENDORSE changing, watering down or abandonment of the RET. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO US, the great unwashed, the voters, who have the delusional idea that the people we VOTE for will make AUSTRALIA a better, more compassionate society?

It means, after we have sought medical treatment for our delusional state and parted with $7, that we will get more illness at $7 a pop, die younger, pay MORE for power bills (CEC reports about $140 more p.a.) and lose the opportunity to employ 18,400 people in new jobs (CEC report).

CONGRATULATIONS, PM ABBOTT. The voters want a better Australia, what do YOU want PM?

And now for some GOOD NEWS

It is Labor and the Nationals’ commitment to have Australia reach 20% of its total energy requirements from renewable energy by 2020; it stands for Renewable Energy Target.

Quite a noble objective, particularly as Australia is possibly the largest coal mine in the world, and that coal produces for us about the CHEAPEST electricity in the world. BUT as I’ve said previously, we pay about the second highest amount for electricity in the world.

BUT coal pollutes the air and causes illness and respiratory problems in the areas where the power stations are located.

So 20% “RENEWABLE ENERGY TARGET” was a noble decision by politicians, who generally are not known for making sensible, let alone NOBLE decisions.

But now the true politician emerges – our fearless leader “Open Government” Abbott.

Only a few months ago, there was an independent report on the future of the RET, which said, “leave it in place”, even though it is probably more successful than was planned.

But that WAS NOT the answer our fearless leader, PM Abbott, wanted. So never mind that the budget must make spending cuts for disabled services etc, we happen to have plenty of money to obtain ANOTHER REPORT on the RET, that will give our fearless leader THE ACTUAL ANSWER THAT HE WANTS … poo-hoo to the previous FACTUAL REPORT. To make SURE the committee delivers ‘Old Fearless’ THE CORRECT answer, ‘Fearless’ has appointed A CLIMATE CHANGE SCEPTIC to head the committee.

with Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck With Acting Senior Sergeant Bob Martin Driving after 75 Did you know that if you are over 75 years of age and hold a Queensland drivers licence you must also carry a current Medical Certificate for Motor Vehicle Driver when you are driving?

The form can be downloaded from http://www. qld.gov.au/seniors/transport/safe-driving/ and taken to your GP to complete.

Medical Certificates are valid for up to 12 months however your doctor may decide to review it more regularly and can issue the certificate for a shorter period.

There are a number of areas in which your age can affect your ability to drive, including changes to your vision, your range and speed of movement and the speed at which you process information and react to it.

Fines apply for failing to carry your Medical Certificate or for not complying with any conditions on the certificate.

School Zones

School zones are there to help ensure the safety of the children, staff and parents of the school.

They are a reminder that there is an increased amount of pedestrian traffic in these areas at certain times and that as a result drivers need to slow down and be aware.

Many of the 40km/h signs around our local schools flash during the times that the school zone is in force making it easier for drivers to be aware of the speed restriction. If the sign is not flashing it is important to still check the times for the school zone, a faulty sign is not a reasonable excuse for speeding.

Depending on the layout of the school the 40km/h limit may be in place for the whole day not just school drop off and pick up times.

During the morning and afternoon rush hour around the schools, drivers need to pay particular attention.

While many crossings around schools are supervised, there are also some which are not, and while school staff do a great job of supervising children around the school, they cannot be everywhere at once.

Police are focusing patrols in school zones.

We are not only targeting speed but also people who are not abiding with the stopping and parking restrictions associated with schools. Remember, a moment of inattention may have serious consequences.

Kelly’s daughter, the gorgeous Jess Wall, suffered from kidney disease from birth and sadly the delightful youngster who loved life, and loved horse riding passed away three years ago.

In Jess’s memory – Kelly is producing an ever expanding range of ‘LIVE.LOVE.RIDE’ items including T-shirts, jodhpurs, hats and stickers with all profits from the sale going to Kidney Health Australia.

Business Buzz with Sonia Clark In last week’s edition we brought the story about Woodlands Enterprises winning the Large Host Employer of the Year at the MIGAS Apprentices and Trainees awards ceremony.

Woodlands Enterprises is a family owned business based in Beerwah and has been in operation for over 100 years.

They employ a range of apprentices including electricians, plumbers, diesel mechanics, fitters and turners.

Woodlands is extremely proud to have contributed to the growth of the local area, providing income to many and producing products of quality.

Danielle Cragg, from MIGAS Apprentices & Trainees said they consistently ensure that every apprentice receives the highest quality training to develop strong skills in their chosen trade.

Woodlands Enterprises currently have 16 MIGAS apprentices, and one School Based Trainee at their site with 11 trades people that completed apprentices with the company.

“The company has had an excellent relationship with MIGAS for the past seven years, and MIGAS looks forward to continuing working with them” Danielle said.

School Based Trainees Beerwah State High School is leading by example in the area of School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships. Matthew Hayes who is a current Year 12 student, has been completing a Traineeship in IT at Beerwah High School since he began Year 11 in 2013. Matthew has been under the guidance of Andrew McQuillan who is currently the Computer Technician completing many different roles: Installing software for classroom computers, diagnosing and repairing laptops, replacing hard drives, and assisting staff and students with computer problems. Matthew has been combining both the traineeship and his schoolwork and has excelled in both areas. Matthew’s trainer Miriam Scott from Barrington’s Training Group has said that it has been a pleasure to train Matthew and to see him develop the necessary skills which will assist Matthew in his future career pathway within Web Design.

Community News Local Glass House Mountains mum, Svetlana de Joux along with her children and a friend did the Mother’s Day Classic last year and really enjoyed it.

So this year she decided to involve her friends and all of their children, together with her family.

I wanted to do it in memory of my mum who passed away with breast cancer 11 years ago, said Svetlana.

Mother’s Day Classic 2014 was at Kawana Island this year, where they all got together for a 4km walk around the waterfront at Kawana Island.

Peachester State Primary School are looking to create an Advance Australia Fair Mural, they have the help of a local indigenous artist with decorating the surrounds of the verses and a wall in their parade space which is sized 2440 x 1220.

However they would really like help with the lettering / sign writing of the two verses of Advance Australia Fair which is sung each Monday morning.

It would be a permanent fixture to a well utilised undercover space central within their small school.

Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade Open Day

Contributed by Helen Jakeman, Secretary Our brigade is participating in the Rural Fire Service Day which is to be held on Saturday, June 7. The Rural Fire Service Day is a statewide celebration of dedication and commitment of the 34,000 men and women who volunteer their time to help keep Queensland communities safe.

The Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade would like to invite community members to visit their Fire Station on Maleny Road between 11.00am and 1.00pm to have a look at their station, vehicles and equipment. We will be having a free sausage sizzle on the day and information will be available on the many aspects of the volunteer service we offer our community.

For example: how to prepare your family and home against the threat of bushfire, the regulations and information required for obtaining a Permit to Light a Fire and how to become a volunteer member of our brigade.

So, please take advantage of this great opportunity to visit us on Saturday, June 7 anytime between 11.00am and 1.00pm to meet the men and women from our brigade who volunteer their time to keep our community safe.

Hinterland groups discuss key community issues with local Member Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has welcomed feedback from key community groups in the Caloundra Electorate hinterland during a recent morning tea.

Mr McArdle met with representatives in Beerwah from Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce, Beerwah CWA, Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed, Mooloolah River Waterwatch, Mooloolah Valley Community Association, Landsborough Area Community Association, Glasshouse Toastmasters and local businesses to discuss a range of issues affecting local communities in the Caloundra Electorate including Beerwah, Landsborough and Mooloolah.

Contributed by Coral Beutel On ANZAC Day, we presented the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital with toilet bags for patients who are admitted in an emergency. Once again our markets were a success. We held our last cooking competition, the cakes were later sold. The results are Any other cakes - 1st Bev, 2nd Joan, Packet cake - 1st Joan and 2nd Coral, Biscuits - 1st Coral, Any other slice - 1st Bev and 2nd Joan, Jam - 1st Coral and 2nd Joan, Chutney 1st Coral and 2nd Joan, Relish - 1st Coral, and 2nd Joan, Butters, 1st Joan. We held a wonderful and a little exhausting International Day on Tuesday, May 20.

One of the highlights of the day was the judging of the Peachester School Children’s work – all 106 entries. The results are Prep - 1st, Erynn, 2nd Ellie, 3rd Hayden. Year 1 - 1st Sam, 2nd Joseph, 3rd Zahra, Year 2 - 1st, Rachel 2nd, Evie, 3rd Bronte, Year 3A – 1st Leela, 2nd Bill, 3rd Chloe, Year 3B - 1st Dylan, 2nd Maya, 3rd Zane, Year 4 – 1st Holly, 2nd April, 3rd, Lexi, Year 5 - 1st Ella, and Jack 3rd, Jessie, Year 6 and 7 - 1st, 2nd Tahli and 3rd Jack. It was a pleasure having the Peachester School children filing through to see their work, on display.

Home and personal security Contributed by Bob Banner At the combined Lions and Rotary May dinner, the guest speaker was Constable Susan Lowndes from Beerwah Police. Susan addressed the question of home and personal security.

She emphasised the need for caution before allowing persons unknown to the householder, to enter their home.

House breakers sometimes masquerade as cold calling tradespeople looking for work.

Make sure they provide proof of identity, including an official license to carry out the work, she said.

Once in the house, wrongdoers quickly notice any valuables such as jewellery or sound equipment. They also take careful note of any vulnerable points of entry your house may have.

She also pointed out the need to shred personal documents, like out of date vehicle registrations and council rate notices, before placing them in garbage bins. All too often Identity Theft is the result of these documents falling into wrong hands.

Caloundra Family History Research Inc. Contributed by Roz Kuss Guest Speaker at the May general meeting was one of the group’s newer members, Ms Jennifer Strike. Her presentation was well researched, informative, and more than anything, very moving. Unlike the British ancestry of the majority of members, Jennifer’s history began in Hungary, the last country to be overtaken by the

Nazi Regime during WWII. Jennifer has been on quite a journey of discovery, over two continents, to find her Eastern European ancestors and their present day families, as well as the stories her now deceased parents never told her.

As Caloundra Family History Research Inc ‘came of age’ this month, the group celebrated its 21st birthday with an afternoon tea and invited Jennifer to cut the cake.

Always popular, bus trips are arranged annually to major repositories, and on Wednesday, June 25 the group will be taking a full day trip to Runcorn to research at the Qld State Archives.

Cost is $25.00 pp, and members of other societies in the area are invited to join us. Please contact Roz prior to June 18 to secure a seat.

Local and family history

Local history is the story of the people and families who make up any community, so local and family history often go hand in hand. Most PHC members are enthusiastic genealogists, involved in their own family research, while at the same time helping to piece together the history of our district.

A wonderful resource which we have often mentioned in this column is ‘Trove’, the NLA online collection of historical newspapers (website http://trove.nla.gov.au/ ). While local and family history starts with names and dates, newspapers help to build up the background – the life and times of our ancestors and their communities.

An example: John and Mary Jane Yeo settled at Peachester in 1905 and established a dairy farm on River Road. A search on Trove for ‘Yeo + Peachester’ produces several interesting items. There is a funeral notice for Mary Jane in the Brisbane Courier, 10 April 1930, and this brief but informative obituary in the Nambour Chronicle, 11 April 1930:

‘Death of Peachester Resident'

Mrs Mary Jane Yeo, wife of Mr John Yeo, a well-known resident of Peachester, passed away at the Beerburrum District Hospital on Tuesday evening from the effects of a stroke a fortnight previously. Deceased was born in the Old Country, and came to Queensland in her early life, and had resided about Coochin Creek and Peachester for upwards of 40 years. She was twice married, and besides her husband leaves two sons, Messrs Dudley and Gordon Yeo of Peachester, and three daughters, Mesdames E. Clarke (Caloundra), J. Simpson, jun. (Commissioner’s Flat, and F. Warwick (Brisbane). The interment took place at Bulimba Cemetery’.

The Queenslander pictorial supplement on 19 May 1923 includes photographs of the Yeo farm ‘Glen Doone’. In the same edition, this photograph of the Stanley River crossing, with Mrs Yeo holding the rope, appears under the heading ‘Motoring under Difficulties’.

School News School and Sports Captains presentation

Contributed by Andrea Balcombe Peachester School and Sports Captains presentation ceremony was held on Monday Parade at the start of this term.

The school students and family's were there to see badges presented to Steffini, Ellena and Sharnte (School Captains) and Ashleigh and Sharnte (Sports Captains).

Years 6 and 7 share this last year of Primary at Peachester State School, thus all students from Years 6 and 7 were asked to take on the role of School Leader, to support and back up the School Captains and the School's Code of Standards which are 'Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be a Learner'.

All the school's seniors were presented with a 'School Leader' badge and are now worn proudly.

Glenview students get a monster lesson On Tuesday, May 20, the Glenview State School students were treated to an extra big and exciting afternoon visit by the legendary Monster Truck ‘Bigfoot’ and the its driver, Rick Long.

Rick, who is a World Champion US based driver is visiting the Sunshine Coast to participate in the USA Monster Truck Spectacular Unleashed event.

‘Bigfoot’ is part of an Autism awareness raising program worldwide and Rick kept the students enthralled with stories about his world travels and answered their many questions.

Students are continuing their involvement with the save the Tassie Devil program promoted by the ‘Tassie Devil’ Monster Truck.

Big Foot sighted

Not surprisingly the students were really excited to start their week off with a visit from the Monster Truck Big Foot.

There were lots of oohhhs and aahhs heard from the audience, as well as photos being taken and lots of questions being asked.

I write to thank two local retail assistants who should have been thanked long ago. Irene Joyce, from the now ‘no more’ Beerwah Fruit Shop, thank you Irene for all of your unstinting help over the years. It was always a joy to be greeted with a smile and all the help required.

The other missing face is Kay Woodward, from the Glasshouse Mountains post office. Nothing was ever too much trouble for Kay and she was an absolute blessing with parcel post help and advice.

Re: please slow down

It was interesting reading ‘Trucks, please slow down’. It appears truck drivers are a protected species who blatantly push the limits of the law.

With the upgrade of an overpass at Bells Creek there are a lot of large trucks using Johnson Road along with other speeding drivers due to congestion on the freeway. There are signs stating local traffic at Bowen Road where it meets Steve Irwin Way and other signs stating 10 tonne limit.

It appears trucks have damaged Moffat Road so badly they have decided to use Crittenden Road, (try getting onto Steve Irwin Way from Moffat Road.)

Is it the saying ‘if its tolerated it becomes acceptable’?

I thought there was a transport department who would work with the police to manage these problems especially after fatalities at the intersection of Bowen Road and Steve Irwin Way. When I wrote to Andrew Powell I was directed to contact council.

I understand truckies are doing a tough job and long hours, but surely they should realise people and children live in our communities and as was stated if it was a car speeding in a school zone it would not be tolerated or would it?

I am 44 and have not been able to work for three years due to injuries and am waiting for operations. I have to decide whether I buy food or pay my rent and bills. I am living below the poverty line as it is and now with this budget I will be worse off as I won’t be able to go to a doctor when needed. There are hundreds of people out there like me and this government just wants to hurt us.

Why give rich people $50,000.00 paid maternity leave. Then slug us poor people?

If this country is in such a bad way why are you doing the above and why is the money raised from doctor’s fees going to research when it should be paying off the debt?

Your wonderful hospital will only be used by wealthy people as us poor people won’t be able to get to or afford treatment there.

A disgrace

The approaches to Beerwah along Steve Irwin Way are a disgrace to our community. How can the local councillor say visitors are going to come to inspect our main street when the main tourist route is such a shame? Tourists travelling south from the golf course to the traffic lights, all you see is, weeds, long grass and dead trees (except for the few properties where residents take pride in the area and keep the footpath mowed and tidy, to the roadway).

At the corner of Mawhinney Street, the swamp lends itself to a clean cement and rock pool, which would also assist with rainwater drainage.

Tourists travelling north from Back Creek Road to the traffic lights, all they see is, weeds, long grass, dead trees, derelict houses and signs which you can barely read due to the build-up of dirt. The sign for Coochin Creek has disappeared.

At the lights, you see more weeds and more long grass and if you are lucky you may see the Beerwah monument sign if you turn your head the right way.

Turn at the lights to go into Beerwah township what do you see? More long grass, weeds and another derelict house. Even after mowing has been completed, it is still a disgrace with a large amount of grass left on the road and footpath.

Don't the council, Main Roads and contractors take pride in their responsibilities and their town?

If you travel to a number of country towns their approaches are CLEAN, TIDY and inviting to stop and take a look around the town, BUT NOT Beerwah. I’m disgusted.

Park naming

Some time ago, Landsborough Area Community Association Inc. contacted council about re-naming Skippy Park at Landsborough to Stan Tutt Memorial Park. After an initial response from council, nothing further was heard and the matter was not pursued. It was raised again at our April meeting and it was moved that we again propose that the park be named in memory of Stan Tutt.

Stan was a very prominent person in both our local community and the Sunshine Coast.

He was a noted historical author, a dedicated environmentalist and was a founding member of Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) and founding member and staunch supporter of the Landsborough Historical Museum, a regular columnist in local papers, and these are only some of his achievements and passions.

Stan was awarded an OAM for his services to the community and the Wildlife Preservation Society, and was an honourary Senior Fellow of Sunshine Coast University.

Stan was a true gentleman and an inspiring example to all who knew him or knew of him.

LACA Inc. thinks it is appropriate that a visible memorial be made to this wonderful man.

We are asking for letters of support from the community to help to bring about this memorial.

Re-naming Skippy Park would be fitting as Stan lived very near to this park.

Public transport works out well

I was reminded of the 1987 comedy classic, ‘Trains, Planes and Automobiles’ when I flew to Melbourne in one day for a business meeting.

I could not see much sense in staying over so I worked out a simple travel schedule for the three-hour airline service meeting at Tullamarine Airport.

I flew Tigerair from Brisbane to Melbourne and then returned with the same airline to the Sunshine Coast. Granted, Tigerair has announced it will suspend the Sunshine Coast service from July 22, but hopefully the link will resume after local demand improves.

For the one-day Melbourne trip on May 8, I left Beerwah on the 7.13am train to Eagle Junction, changed within eight minutes for the Airtrain journey, arriving in plenty of time to check in for the 9.55am Melbourne flight.

I had considered the 6.15am Tigerair service on that day but decided an early-morning car trip from Beerwah was too difficult.

I left Melbourne at 3.35pm for the Sunshine Coast and was picked up in the family car (45 km Beerwah to the airport).

The trip was an interesting example of the efficiency of public transport and airline services – it could have taken up to three days to travel by car from the Sunshine Coast to Melbourne, plus petrol and accommodation!

Granted, during the flights of a little more than two hours each, I did keep my eyes open for a ‘curtain ring salesman’ but without an overnight stay I did not face the embarrassing risk of sharing a hotel bed with another stranded male character as per the film.

Despite travelling for more than four hours by air, I enjoyed the journey with the few bumps coming into the Sunshine Coast and warmly thanked the captain for his neat touchdown.

Sad note

In the sports section of GCNews last week, the Mooloolah Bowls Club report mentioned the passing of a club member who they referred to as ‘The General’.

Many people outside of the club would have known him as ‘Bob Patton’ he was a life member of the club, from the day he joined the club, he worked and worked to keep it a going concern.

After he lost his wife to breast cancer six years ago – bowls was his life line, along with his mates.

In the update on the intended development sites of Beerwah East and Halls Creek, a description was given of the current uses of this area by Mark McArdle.

It was not actually conveyed whether the current usage was considered of any real value but as the object of the inspection was to promote its suitability for future housing development you would think that this would have to be so.

My point is when the established areas along the railway corridor are in urgent need of investment (not just prettying up) and continued development, why would any government consider signing up to a plan that would involve enormous cost in the infrastructure needed i.e. water and electricity, never mind the effect on the Bruce Highway?

As far as I can see, the main beneficiary is Stockland, who are looking to assure themselves of a huge land bank with the accompanying profits.

Any development company would do the same.

From their standpoint, Pumicestone Passage makes a rather nice canal.

Who will protect our environmental heritage?

If the deputy premier is all that stands between this area and another environmental disaster, I had better start saying my prayers.

The current land use of Beerwah East and Halls Creek may not be impressive, but compared with the proposed development, it’s almost idyllic.

Remember when mangroves were considered something to be removed rather than the important habitat they are? We have learnt from that, or have we?

Pensioners outnumber any other type of voter even by race, religion or age.

When are pensioners going to wake up and understand we have the power to shape legislation? All we need is the will power to do so.

Entitlement my a###. I paid good money for my pension and other benefits. Just because they borrowed that money, doesn't make my benefits some kind of charity or hand-out.

Gold plated MP pensions and Civil Service Government benefits, aka free healthcare, outrageous retirement packages, 67 paid holidays, 20 weeks paid vacation, unlimited paid sick days, now that's welfare. And they have the nerve to call me a 'greedy pensioner' and my retirement, an ‘entitlement’.

Someone please tell me what is wrong with all the people that run this country?

We're ‘broke’ and can't help our own pensioners, veterans, orphans, homeless etc., but spent 1.2 billion dollars for G-20 events! In the last few months we have provided aid to India, Greece and Turkey and now Afghanistan, Pakistan.

They call Old Age Security and healthcare an entitlement, even though most of us have been paying for it all our working lives. Now when it’s time for us to collect, the government is running out of money. Why did the government borrow from it in the first place?

Australia is a country where we have homeless without shelter, children going to bed hungry, hospitals being closed, average income families who can't afford dental care, elderly going without 'needed' meds and having to travel hundreds of miles for medical care with no reimbursement of cost. There are vehicles we can't afford fuel for, lack of affordable housing, and mentally ill without treatment - etc., etc.

Yet they provide 'benefit' for the people from foreign countries...ships and planes lining up with food, water, tents, clothes, bedding, doctors, and medical supplies.

Calling all Mooloolah Under 8’s The will be a carnival atmosphere at Mooloolah State School when it celebrates Under 8’s Day this Thursday, May 29 with plenty of fun on the program. The early childhood team have planned a fantastic day for all Mooloolah children aged eight years and under, from 9.00am to 12.30pm.

There will be lots of wonderful creative hands-on activities such as weaving, critter creations, kite-making, mask-making, and good old goop fun! There will also be a dinosaur ice-age discovery, fence painting, face painting, storytelling, music and dance.

Our local emergency services teams will be joining the action, and there will be a lunchtime sausage sizzle and drink. A feature of the day’s activities will be special performances from the Mooloolah State School instrumentalists, school choir and the now renowned school Spanish Dancers.

National Simultaneous Storytime

At Beerwah State School on Wednesday, May 21 at 10.45am, 50 children from Years 2, 3 and 4 enjoyed listening to Mrs Collins read the book ‘Too Many Elephants in this House’ written by Ursula Dubosarsky.

National Simultaneous Storytime is an important annual event that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 14th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy using anAustralian children's book that explores age appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Years Grades F to 6 and the pre-school Early Learning Years Framework.

Space for parents of adolescents ‘ParentSpace’ is a community collaboration project lead by IFYS Reconnect in collaboration with BADYACC and Beerwah State High School, with an aim of connecting and supporting parents of adolescents in Glasshouse Country. This has been initiated following the success of the ‘Parentspace’ group that has been meeting at Headspace at Maroochydore.

This group aims to assist parents to better understand the situations their adolescent children are dealing with, hence to be better informed to support and communicate more appropriately and effectively with their children.

Also, the connecting of parents who may be dealing with similar situations will provide the opportunity to share stories, offer each other supportive advice and feel listened to resulting in a shared experience.

The 2014 Maleny Agricultural Show this Friday, and Saturday May 30 and 31 is going to be a jam packed two days with plenty to see and do for the whole family!

Parachute jumpers will kick off the official opening of the show, with a grand parade around the Main Arena on Friday at 2.30pm. New to this year’s show there will be interactive displays demonstrating the process some of our produce goes through before it arrives at the supermarket.

The Nambour High School will have a farm display with the chance for you to see where the milk comes from, as well as butter making and cream separation.

And another new edition will be the Small Farmers Tent in the entertainment arena where there will be plenty of talks and demonstrations across both days.

There’ll be horse jumping, performance horses, all types of crafts, photography, floral art, cooking, wine tastings, dairy and beef competitions, wood chopping, milking competitions and of course side show alley, just to name a few!

This year’s entertainment features the The Maleny Supa IGA Rodeo, Eljay Freestyle Bikes, the Crack Up Sisters, working dog displays, the dog jumping competition, whip cracking workshops and much more.

If you want to get your hands dirty, get a team together and take on the Gumboot Ironman Competition, which promises to be very messy and a lot of fun! Kick on well into the night at the Cattleman’s bar and be amazed by the stunning fireworks display lined up.

Big news this year is the tug-of-war competiton, where $500.00 will be up for grabs for anyone who puts in a team of eight people to contest the title.

Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987 Lending an oar for the cause

I recently joined a few other councillors in putting paddle-to-the-metal at Lake Kawana to promote our hosting of the 2016 World Outrigging Sprint Championships. This event involves 35 nations, which will see some 3,000 participants, supporters and spectators visit the Sunshine Coast over the 10 days the event is run. Fortunately, our rowing is as good as our cooperation in council and we didn’t tip the canoe over – but I have re-discovered a few muscles as a result!

Do business with council

Council spends about 70% of its active purchasing budget with local businesses annually – that’s about $200 million a year.

But not all local suppliers are big companies – and your company could be supplying council too.

Information sessions on how to do business with council are being conducted every two months and are open to local business-people keen to understand council’s procurement systems and processes.

More than 60 people have attended the sessions so far and upcoming sessions are currently set for Friday, July 18, Thursday, September 18 and Thursday, December 11. Give your weeds some value

Weeds! Don’t you hate them! But wait … for the month of May they will actually have some value. Council has declared war on the pests, and is setting up an exchange where - during this month - you can swap them for free native trees to plant in your garden.

It’s part of council’s Community Nature Conservation Program that assists local volunteer groups in their work restoring bushland, wetlands, coastal foreshores and waterways projects across the Sunshine Coast.

Information on locations, dates and times for weed swaps is available on council’s website. Posters are also on display in local libraries and council’s customer services centres.

Council has just endorsed the latest round of Community Grants and it’s great to see a number of Division 5 community groups will receive a helping hand from council including the Mooloolah Valley Community Association.

Council will provide $5,000 towards air conditioning and installation of split-cycle air conditioning at the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre.

Glenview Road Update

Local residents and commuters along Glenview Road will be delighted to hear that safer travels for drivers and pedestrians are on the way thanks to council’s $1.1million upgrade. The project involved renewal of failing road pavement along a section of Glenview Road, west of the school between Rosemary Avenue and Tolson Road. Further upgrades to the road will continue in future years.

Responsible dog ownership

A man was seriously injured last week after being attacked by a dog on the Sunshine Coast. This incident provides a timely reminder that while dogs may be loving members of the family, they can act unpredictably and must be under control at all times. For further information about responsible dog ownership including precautions dog owners can take to mitigate the possibility of aggressive behaviour occurring, visit council’s website.

Community grant programs

A new round of operational funding is available for not-for-profit organisations that deliver key services and facilities to the Sunshine Coast community through council’s Community Partnership Funding Program.

The program will provide one year of funding for 2014/2015. Submissions close 5.00pm, June 23.

Also open is council’s Environment Levy Partnerships which is available to assist with up to three years of operational expenses for community organisations whose operations or services contribute to the protection of the Sunshine Coast environment. Prospective applicants need to lodge an expression of interest by 5.00pm, June 9 before making an application.

Earlier this month, the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) welcomed landmark property and real estate reforms passed by the Queensland Parliament. The changes saw a split of the Property Agents and Motor Dealers Act has resulted in the creation of industry specific legislation.

No matter whether you’re a small farmer, a wanna-be small farmer, or just someone interested in all things semi-rural, you’ll find that there’ll be something interesting and informative on each day.

On Friday it’s all things chicken – from how to keep them to how to cook them.

If you’ve been wanting to keep chooks, then this is the perfect place to learn a lot about it all at the one time.

There’s Luca – who’s eight-years-old – and will share a kid’s perspectives on keeping backyard chickens, and Lachlan (11-years-old) who builds and sells hand-made chicken coops. Lachlan will talk about what makes a good chook house.

Kacey (Lachlan’s parent) is a chicken farmer and will talk about how to successfully care for free range chickens.

For those who want to breed and show chickens, there will be a demonstration on how to get a bird in tip top shape for the show, as well as a judge explaining what they look for in a champion chook.

For those carnivores out there, Chef Peter will demonstrate the art of boning out a whole chicken, as well as making perfect marinades and stocks.

To get you involved, there’ll be a kid’s craft activity – Feather the Chook, a raffle to win a custom built chook house and a chance to cast your vote for the People’s Choice best chicken.

The Big Ideas tent on Saturday highlights some interesting and unusual things you can do on small acreage.

A local farmer will talk on setting up a small farm and caring for livestock.

The organisers of the Maleny Children’s garden will talk about their space and how they use it to teach kids about growing and eating healthy foods.

Three different specialist farmers will then enthral listeners with tales of their enterprises – giving everyone good ideas on what is possible on a small holding – including keeping camels, growing sandalwood and looking after bees.

As a bonus, the kids can pot up marigold seedlings to take home and grow.

So when you’re at the show this weekend, drop into the small farmers tent and take away some big ideas for your next project.

Work will continue on Friday, June 20 with completion of planting in the current area and development of a new area upstream along the banks of Coochin Creek. Planting, mulching and weeding also continues at the rockholes site on the first Monday of each month, managed by Peter Kluver.

Recently the Christian Community to which I belong hosted The Catholic Guy Mission Event.

Bruce Downes, the Catholic Guy, is a preacher who developed his ministry in Perth and now he and his team travel around Australia and internationally. He has been very involved in outreach to young people and he now hosts a program on Fox television. The Catholic Guy is also very involved with other Christian Churches and has been a speaker at Hillsong Church.

A Mission Event is an opportunity for members of the faith community to pause and make a little extra time to listen. There is so much to do and so much noise around us that often we seem to get carried away in one direction when our hearts are calling us in another. So we take some time to listen to our hearts and to God who speaks very gently in that sacred place.

Of the topics we covered I found the talk on forgiveness the most challenging. Seeking forgiveness and offering it is not the done thing in contemporary society, especially if it is more than saying a quick sorry.

Asking another ‘Will you forgive me?’ gives them a certain power and when I say ‘I forgive you’ then I forgo that need for retaliation or vengeance.

Forgiveness never replaces the need for justice to be done but forgiveness can bring healing to very deep wrongs that were done and do not seem to go away by just forgetting because we can't just forget. In the Christian context to love one another can seem a difficult challenge but the call to forgive each other just as we have been forgiven seems ever so much harder.

There were some discomforting reasons why this talk by Bruce fascinated me and continues to linger. But what also struck me, is that forgiveness is such a deeply human need that goes well beyond religious conviction. In movies such as ‘The Railway Man’, ‘Philomena’ and others, we see those who have suffered terrible injustice and an unbelievable absence of compassion walk the difficult road to inner healing via forgiveness. The heart has a wonderful capacity to love and in so many ways in the lives of many different people we see the heart's extraordinary capacity to forgive.

Our course is in beautiful condition, which enticed 62 ladies out to play a Single Stroke event for trophies kindly donated by one of our lady members Ruth Parish as well as from one of our local businesses, Flair Jewellery.

We had some great scores, with Cindy Godfrey winning Division 1 with a score of 72 Nett, on a count back from Sonia Kenway, also with 72 Nett. Margaret Goodger won Division 2 with 78

Nett, from Lyn Wallace who came in with 79 Nett. Nearest to the Pin on number 2 was Meg Ferran, Andrea Campbell was closest on number 5, and Lyn took out the 16th. Kathy Moffat was closest in Division 1 on the 18th, while Margaret Goodger took out Division 2. The ball rundown went to 80 Nett. With such glorious weather and the course playing so well, it’s a pleasure to be out there. We hope to see you on the course soon, until then, stay safe and good golfing.

Hope that all the players are learning how to score and also to ball-boy for their matches, particularly in the older divisions, and not relying on parents or other adults to score for them. Please make sure you turn up for your match before the start time, as the time given is when you start playing on court. Reminder that May 30 is the Show holiday so if you are unable to play this Friday, either organise a fill-in or arrange with the rest of the competing teams to play on an earlier day or the following Monday. Make sure that the fill-in player knows who they are playing, the time they are playing and the date this is going to happen. If unable to get a fill-in player please contact Katya.
