Hi Everyone...

I know that I bang on quite a bit about living in a really intriguing community, but I have to say the cover story this week about our local Paramedic Marathon Man, Ryan Hansen, definitely made me smile.

Actually, when Ryan sent me through an email explaining what he was planning to do – break a record from the Guinness Book of Records while undertaking a marathon in his paramedic uniform, including boots, I was a little surprised and impressed.

However, it wasn’t the task at hand that made me smile, but it was when he explained the trouble he was having training in his uniform.

He was concerned that people may find it unsettling seeing a paramedic, without an ambulance in sight, running in full uniform down the street.

It isn’t an image I have ever thought about before, and I reckon it is the kind of sight that might just cause panic if he was seen running around Beerwah!

But you definitely have to admire his determination and commitment to the task.

Local News Bushfire-prone areas Destructive bushfires over a two-year period have positioned the Sunshine Coast as one of Queensland’s most bushfire-prone regions, according to the latest figures released.

The Sunshine Coast has shot to fourth on the latest Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) bushfire hotspot list – a rise of five places in the space of two years – due in part to bushfire activity at Coolum and Caloundra.

QFES’s bushfire hotspot list compares the number of bushfires by season across all 17 Rural Fire Service (RFS) commands in Queensland, with the latest figures covering the 2017 bushfire season.

The Sunshine Coast slipped to ninth position after the 2015 season, before cementing itself in fourth place following the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

“The figures released last week demonstrate what we have been saying for some time: the rate and severity of bushfires on the Sunshine Coast is on the rise,” Caloundra RFS Area Director Gary Seaman said.

“The Sunshine Coast is volatile right now; in 2016 the bushfire season ran for the longest period in 10 years, while 2017 was short but incredibly intense.

“The region has averaged close to 200 bushfires a season over the last four years, and residents have experienced the consequences of this firsthand with fierce bushfires at Coolum and Caloundra.

“Residents need to keep this in mind as we head toward what may be another unpredictable bushfire season on the Sunshine Coast.”

Mr Seaman said people should identify propertyspecific measures that can be taken to reduce bushfires starting.

“Given what the new figures released today reveal, Sunshine Coast locals cannot risk leaving themselves exposed when bushfire season kicks off,” he said.

“Residents should mow their grass regularly, dispose of green waste and leaf litter and remove flammable objects in their yards.

“Those on larger properties should determine if they need firebreaks in place, while everyone must ensure firefighters can easily access their property in the event of a fire.”

Mr Seaman said the RFS had drawn up a hit list of areas to target in the lead-up to bushfire season, which includes Beerwah.

“We don’t want a repeat of this, so firefighters will be identifying and removing potential bushfire risks between now and August, which may include conducting hazard reduction burns if weather conditions are ideal,” he said.

“It is essential we get on top of this early so that we can take the sting out of this year’s bushfire season.”

Sunshine Coast Council last week endorsed its $864 million budget for 2018-19 which they describe as continuing to focus on maintaining a strong, sustainable council, investing in the services and facilities that communities need and improving the liveability and vitality of the Sunshine Coast.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said this year’s budget built on council’s plan for the region and demonstrated a continuing commitment to preserving and enhancing the natural environment, supporting and servicing the community and building an economy that can provide jobs and opportunities now and into the future.

“Each year for the past six years, we have delivered a budget surplus and this year will be no different,” Mayor Jamieson said.

Council’s 2018/19 budget is designed to invest in the future of the region while delivering now.

Highlights for Division 1 Sunshine Coast Council’s 2018/19 budget is designed to invest in the future of the region.

Councillor Rick Baberowski said the $864 million 2018/19 budget would bring significant upgrades to parks, facilities and roads in Division 1.

“One of the major items is the $602,500 that has been allocated to upgrade the district swimming facility at the Beerwah Aquatic Centre to meet growing demand and deliver long-awaited quality improvements and additions,” Cr Baberowski said.

“The project will create a new entry, upgrade the main complex building, improve the car park and bus drop off area and add a new indoor heated

program pool.

“The aim is to set a higher standard and improve the look, feel and function of the aquatic centre.

“I am also pleased that council is investing $2.4 million in transportation projects in Division 1 to continue making our road networks and footpaths safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

“We’ll be investing $1.5 million upgrading a further 2.3km of Roys Road, Beerwah to improve road safety and accommodate the level of traffic that now uses the road.”

Cr Baberowski said improving opportunities for outdoor recreation for both residents and tourists was a key priority of the budget.

“I am extremely proud to announce that new trails will be added to the southern part of the Glass House Mountains,” he said.

“Stage 1 of the upgrade will include a 1km extension connecting Beerburrum township to the summit of Mt Beerburrum and a second 4km trail for the more adventurous walkers which will provide excellent challenges and views.

“This will be the first ‘Rail to Trail’ concept delivered in the region.

“Further improvements will also be carried out in several parks around the division, including Skippy Park in Landsborough and Glass House Mountains District Park, and a fantastic new playground will be installed in Turner Park.

“In addition, council will continue upgrading local roads and waste management infrastructure to improve the safety and capabilities of our region.”

What’s happening at GC&M News For many businesses this time of year they are very focused on EOFY... or, for those of you who don’t speak the lingo, ‘End of Financial Year’.

However, even though it is only June 27 at GC&M News we have definitely moved on, with changes already in place for 2018/2019.

Sadly this includes our part-time Glasshouse Country Advertising Rep, Carol Fitton, leaving us after twelve years to take up a full-time job elsewhere.

I know our team and many of Carol’s clients will miss her and her dedication to getting the best results from every situation, and we all wish her well with her new adventures.

We are fortunate however to have Tina Grieve, who has been our team’s Hinterland Advertising Sales Rep for the past three years, to now take on an expanded role.

We are also are really pleased to have two other lovely experienced and creative locals Carrie Shaw and Melanie Augustin joining our team in the coming weeks.

The one good thing about farewelling a team member, is it gave us an excuse to have a girls’ lunch at the Beerwah Hotel. Fortunately for us girls, Brownie was happy to keep the office going!

You may have noticed that we have been running some larger than usual ads letting our customers and community contributors know that we have some changes to our deadlines, which is a result of changes with our printer.

For our next edition on July 4, we will be going to print this Friday, June 29, which means our editorial and advertising deadlines will be pulled forward to 12 noon this Thursday, June 28, and for Classifieds it will be 10am this Friday, June 29.

From the July 11 edition we will have an earlier print time, so we will be permanently changing our deadlines for community contributions for editorial to Thursday at 12 noon, our Classified deadline will be 10am Monday and letters to the editor will need to be contributed by 10am on Fridays.

We really appreciate the massive amount of community contributions we receive each week, so being able to receive them a little earlier will make life a little smoother from our end in terms of getting them all edited, proofed and on the page.

Recently when I was chatting to a local they explained to me that for them GC&M News is the glue that sticks our community together, which made me smile and feel good about the role our team plays in the local community.

So, I just wanted to take this chance to say thanks to all those businesses who support us each week, and the contributors that send us their stories to share – we are very happy to continuing being the glue!

Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said managing the budget process for one of the largest divisions on the Sunshine Coast meant working hard to get the balance right by delivering projects to meet each community’s individual needs.

“Every community across Division 5 has its own unique requirements, and some of the most valuable projects don’t need a huge price tag,” Cr McKay said.

“From roads, bridges and pathways, and parks and gardens to sport and recreation facilities and community centres, there is such a diversity in our projects for 2018/19.

“I’m very proud to be able to deliver so many projects that benefit our many different local communities.”

Funding for major projects within Division 5 includes $1.1 million for upgrades to Russell Family Park at Montville, a further $225,000 to support the second stage of the Maleny Golf Course and $239,000 to replace the amenity block at Conondale Memorial Recreation Park.

“In addition to these major projects, $594,000 will be invested in local parks and gardens, including Lemon Grove Park and Sir Francis Nicklin Park at Palmwoods, Village Green Park at Mooloolah Valley, and Cook Park at Maleny,” Cr McKay said.

“Rural roads are always high on my agenda, so I’m also very pleased to announce that this year’s budget includes $1.7 million for the ongoing upgrade of a 1.2km stretch of McGilchrist Road in Eudlo, $465,000 to widen and upgrade a section of Diamond Valley Road, $65,450 to upgrade the remainder of Citrus Road at Palmwoods and $185,000 to upgrade the car park at the local community kindergarten.

“Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, I’m proud to work with local residents and community groups to deliver practical solutions for our Hinterland communities.”

NBN tower looms over Bald Knob On the heels of Sunshine Coast Council’s refusal of the NBN fixed wireless broadband tower application in Burgess Avenue at Maleny (GC&M News June 13), another development application has been received by council for a tower at Bald Knob.

The proposed 45m tower is located on private land at 391 Landsborough-Maleny Road, with the tower site indicated to be just above the intersection with Upper Mt Mellum Road.

The planning report submitted to council suggests that the tower will service parts of Mt Mellum, parts of Bald Knob, parts of Landsborough and parts of Mooloolah Valley.

This area extends about 4km northeast along King Road, Mooloolah Valley, almost 3km south past Lower Mount Mellum Road, and about 5km east to Gympie St North, Landsborough. The report also estimates that the tower will service approximately 250 households.

This facility is intended to work in conjunction with the surrounding fixed line service area and two approved fixed wireless facilities at Wilkes Knob and Beerwah.

A total of 19 possible sites were identified and investigated, with only three landholders showing positive interest. Of these, the proposed site proved to be the least unsuitable.

Co-location on the existing television towers at Bald Knob was looked at but excluded from consideration due to technical problems.

The tower, sited less than 100m from the landholder’s dwelling, is only 140m from the nearest neighbour’s house in Rowan Lane, which is considerably less than the 400m which the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme suggests as acceptable. It is also less that 25m from a State controlled road, which triggers a referral to the State Government for their assessment.

The assessment process hasn’t started well for NBN, as council has subsequently sent them an action notice stating that the application was not properly made, giving them 20 days to rectify the issues.

If the community response to the previous NBN applications is any indication, this tower is up for a considerable amount of public scrutiny.

By Sonia Clark Local paramedic Ryan Hansen will be attempting to smash a Guinness World Record when he competes in the upcoming 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon on Sunday August 19.

A full-time paramedic at the Beerwah Ambulance Station, Ryan plans to run the the marathon in full paramedic uniform in order to raise money for QAS Legacy while also taking a crack at breaking the current Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon dressed as a paramedic (male).

Since joining the Queensland Ambulance Service and resuming his interest in running, Ryan says he has had his eye on this particular record for the last two years.

“As a child I always received the Guinness books for birthdays and Christmas, and always thought that it would be a cool idea to one day feature in one,” he says.

“I got back into running when I became a paramedic as I wanted to stay fit for the role.

Work commitments meant I couldn’t participate in regular weekend sports, so running was an activity that I could schedule around my roster.”

Ryan has lived and worked in Beerwah for the past 12 months after transferring from the Gold Coast. He ran cross country in school but lost interest over the years, picking it up again over the past two years. He has previously competed in a half marathon, but this will be his first attempt at the gruelling 42.2km distance.

In order to satisfy the stringent Guinness rules, Ryan will have to run the full marathon course in complete paramedic uniform which includes shirt, trousers, boots and a high visibility jacket.

The current record for this attempt is held by Karsten Koehler from Germany in a total time of 3hrs, 58mins and 17 seconds.

To help prepare for the event, Ryan has been doing short fast runs and hills combined with a weekly long run, however to practice running in the paramedic uniform he finds its better to jump on his treadmill at home – as the sight of a paramedic running through the streets could be somewhat alarming for people!

“The boots are heavy and the uniform is hot, and while I am enjoying training for the event, after a long 12 hour day at work it can be a little difficult to jump straight onto a treadmill for a run, still in my uniform,” says Ryan.

As well as hoping to smash the Guinness World Record, an important part of the attempt for Ryan is fundraising for QAS Legacy, the compassionate

charity that assists ambulance officers and their families in times of need or in the unfortunate event of injury or death on the job. To date he has raised over $1,200 towards his target of $5,000.

This year the marathon will follow a new course and will start from the Alexandra Headland Surf Club. Ryan is looking for runners to participate and run alongside him to assist with verifying the attempt for the Guinness World Record, which he is hoping to gain by completing the course in under 3hrs 55mins.

“Fellow paramedics have been extremely supportive of the idea, often asking how the training is going and questioning my sanity,” laughs Ryan.

Ryan hopes that as far as marathons go this is just the beginning. Anyone interested in running with him in this marathon can get in contact with the organisers who will pass on the relevant details.

Community News Wear a loud shirt to support deaf kids

The Quota Club of Maleny is hosting what is gearing up to be a really great afternoon of entertainment in support of the Sunshine Coast Hear and Say Centre, on Saturday July 21 from 2pm until 4.30pm.

The event to be held at the Maleny RSL Hall, and will feature Hear and Say community champion and local identity Barry Bull, along with live performances from local musicians Kelly Cork and ‘Richo’ Richardson.

The afternoon is billed as ‘The Gift of Sound’ and will include music and banter from veteran music man Barry Bull, a passionate supporter of the invaluable work the charity does with children suffering hearing loss and a driving force behind the fundraiser.

Barry’s young grandson Archer was born with seriously impaired hearing and through the charity has been able to receive Cochlear implants which allow him the gift of sound and speech.

Archer is just one of many children who attend the Nambour Hear and Say Centre regularly to receive ongoing speech and hearing support, and funds raised at the event will go directly to support the centre.

Nambour Hear and Say works directly with families and other medical professionals to achieve the best outcomes for deaf children of all ages.

The Quota Club of Maleny is keen to support the work of the centre which involves a combination of early diagnosis and access to the most up to date hearing technology and auditory-verbal therapy.

Participants are encouraged to wear their ‘loudest shirt’ in support of deaf kids, and the afternoon promises to be hugely entertaining while also supporting an excellent cause.

Barry will draw upon his 50-year career in music and business to share some true-life stories and inspiration and, along with special guests Kelly Cork and Richo, the trio will extend their own gift of sound with the audience. Tickets are $25 which includes a scrumptious homemade afternoon tea and can be purchased at Rosetta Books, Maple Street, Maleny.

Knitfest will be out of this world!

Celebrate all things warm and woolly at this year’s Knitfest, the yarn and fibre arts festival held throughout Maleny over the weekend of June 30-July 1.

The festival embraces the whole community in the celebration of winter arts and crafts, and this year the theme is ‘Outer Space/Sci Fi.’ Head along and get your photo taken next to the quirky Knitfest mannequins at Maleny Men’s and Woolworths. Showcasing the work of the Knitfest Yarnbombers, these unique ‘Insty and Facebook’ friendly pieces took seven months to put together!

The ‘Friendship Bridge’ is back again this year by popular demand. Collect your unwanted woollens, scarves and handknits, and during the festival weekend and the following week put them up at the bridge. Items can be swapped for something you like or, if you're in need, feel free to take it.

Any items left over will be donated to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to distribute to those in need.

In the two weeks leading up to the festival weekend, the Yarnbombers have been putting up daily decorations a-washing the town in a fibrous field day of colour – so keep your eyes peeled for the latest additions to the streetscape.

Many of the 30 festival workshops on offer have proven to be extremely popular, with a number of them already sold out. If you are planning to attend, don’t delay, make sure you book your spot today.

Lions look back at successful year From Patricia, Amanda and Staff at Beerwah Library School's out and it's time for some holiday fun There are loads of activities on offer at the library these school holidays. Create your own board game, see how high you can fly a water rocket, take part in the Battle Bot challenge, build a R2D2 droid, make your own character box head or design your own retro arcade game.

You can also take part in our scavenger hunt, challenge yourself to find all the hidden characters and check them off as you find them in the library. The scavenger hunt will run daily during the holidays at all libraries.

At its recent changeover dinner the Beerwah Lions Club looked back at a successful year.

President Charles Farran addressing the gathering with his annual report said the year had been very satisfying in terms of working with other local organisations helping them stage successful events.

Other successes included lending a hand to needy individuals, and members’ fundraising efforts which resulted in a donation list that topped $25,000, shared between local charities, and Lions Medical Research Projects.

Ladies auxiliary president Gail Farran also reported on twelve months of achievements from the Lions Ladies, including sizable donations to worthwhile causes.

In proposing a toast to Lions International, Lion Bob Banner asked the gathering to look at the achievements of twenty five Beerwah Lions over the last year.

Take the membership of Beerwah and multiply it by 56,000, which gives a total of 1.4 million, the total number of Lions around the world spread through two hundred countries.

From these figures you get some idea of the beneficial impact that Lions International has on the world.

The gathering, held in the Landsborough Hotel, included numerous Lions visiting from nearby clubs and marked fifty one years since the Beerwah club was chartered on September 2, 1967.

Award-winning poet Angela Gardner is leading a poetry writing workshop on Friday July 13 as part of this year’s Celebration of Books Maleny.

The Churchill Fellowship recipient, whose recent manuscript ‘Some Sketchy Notes on Matter’ was shortlisted for the 2018 Dorothy Hewett Award, explained the workshop format: “I hope to introduce participants to some new poetry by way of examples as well as us working on some useful writing exercises. We’ll look at line, at rhythm, and slant rhyme along the way. I hope the work we do together will provide practical ways forward through the stages of writing poetry from the initial idea, through writing, research and revising drafts. I’m really looking forward to it.”

The festival continues on Saturday July 14 with local book artist Anita Gray hosting a book folding

workshop at the Maleny Library.

Bring in an old hard-cover book and learn how to cut and fold your way to creating your own unique Angela Gardner piece of book art.

How are your strawberries coming along?

Preparations for the 2018 Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival are well under way, and it’s time to gear up for the annual Super Strawberry Competition.

This novelty competition is held each year in the lead up to the Charity Sports, and strawberry lovers please note: it is not just for farmers – you could find the champions in your garden or even on a potted plant!

The main competition for the ‘Biggest Strawberry’ has been running since 1996, and there have

been some amazing results over the years.

In 2016 and 2017 there was also a popular class for the ‘Most Unusual Strawberry’ – and this will continue in 2018.

As usual there will be eight weekly rounds, with Round 1 closing on Friday July 6.

Bring your entries in to the Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-op any time during the week, but before 4pm each Friday.

Not good enough

Recently my car sustained damage while I was attempting to park it in a car parking space in Cribb Street at Landsborough outside of the Saint Vincent de Paul shop.

This damage was caused by rusted and jagged reinforcing steel protruding from the top of council’s bollard made of PVC stormwater pipe that was filled with concrete.

I went home and called the Sunshine Coast Council call centre to advise of the damage and was directed by the staff member to send in writing the details of what had happen.

As directed, I put my complaint in writing plus provided multiple photos and the quote of approximately $1,600 for repairs.

Interestingly, the next morning when I drove past the site, I noticed that council staff had removed the damaged bollards and they have since been replaced with orange flexible ones.

Several days later I received an email and letter from a council staff member, from the claims department bluntly advising that council would not take responsibility for the damage.

I called this guy up to ask him to explain, and that as a ratepayer I expected a little more courtesy and respect. With indifference, he advised that his supervisor would contact me.

A few days later I got a call from the supervisor who told me that they understood my situation and were happy to review it.

Not surprisingly a day later I received a reply confirming the advice in the first correspondence that I would have to cover the damages.

I explained my financial situation, but to no avail.

The council bureaucrats did not care.

I would like to warn others that ratepayers are only seen as a revenue base from which the council extracts its money, and to be aware that council won’t take responsibility for damage from the council equipment or assets.

Kim McCosker of ‘4 Ingredients’ fame shared some great cooking tips with locals at Maleny last Thursday morning and then on Friday she was in-store at the Beerwah IGA doing taste tests for the customers of recipes from her newest cookbook ‘The Easiest One Pot Cookbook Ever’.

If you are always looking for something quick, easy and delicious for dinner, then Kim’s book has plenty of great ideas, including Satay Chicken.

Satay Chicken

Serves 4 • 1 tbsp red curry paste • 500g boneless, skinless chicken breast fillets, chopped • 2 tbsp crunchy peanut butter • 3/4 cup (180ml) cream In a non-stick pan, heat the red curry paste.

Add the chicken and seal, stirring to cook evenly, 3 to 4 minutes.

Add the peanut butter and cream and stir to combine.

Reduce heat and simmer until the chicken is cooked through, 6 to 8 minutes.

Optional: Serve on a bed of rice, garnished with freshly sliced spring onions, capsicum and fresh coriander leaves.

Add a few crushed peanuts for texture.

Maleny Film Society invites you to ‘The Party’ this Saturday, June 30.

The setting is an up-market London apartment dinner soiree with seven diverse middle class players.

But it may be unlike any intimate gathering you've ever attended before. This "first Brexit movie" (it was shot over the fortnight in which the Brexit referendum took place) has been described by one critic as "awful people saying awful things to each other."

However, respected British director Sally Potter (Orlando) says she set out to "work with the healing power of laughter" to lighten the tragic elements of the narrative. And there are plenty of tragic elements! But, be assured, this tragicomedy provides some laughs through its sharply witty script and satirisation of both the British political system and the middle classes, particularly the London intelligentsia.

Kristin Scott-Thomas plays Janet, a politician who invites her ‘friends’ to her home to celebrate her promotion to Cabinet. Her husband Bill (Timothy Spall) seems unengaged – and there's a good reason for this.

The invitees arrive: the cynical April (Patricia Clarkson) and her wacky husband, pregnant Jinny and partner, and a coke-sniffing banker. So far so good?

Hardly! Gradually, the celebratory party descends into an opportunity to trade insults, as personal failings are brutally exposed and the result is inevitably farcical.

Enhanced by the bitingly witty screen play of Sally Potter and the blackand-white cinematography of Aleksei Rodinov, this modern satire – rated MA – will engross viewers.

Muscle on the Mountain Show and Shine is back on Sunday July 1 at the Maleny Showgrounds from 7am until 1pm. Now in its seventh year, the event is a huge drawcard for both enthusiasts and the general public, with record crowds expected to turnout.

Abbey Medieval Festival

Immerse yourself in the colour and grandeur of the 29th Abbey Medieval Festival to be held over the weekend of July 14-15. Knights, warriors, lords and ladies will present live medieval scenes showcasing the Dark Ages, Late Middle Ages, the Crusades and early Renaissance in a jam-packed festival program. Ten entertainment venues will host more than 80 demonstrations and performances across the weekend, with 70 stalls offering tasty medieval cuisine and shopping. Festival goers will be entertained by the multitudes of medieval musicians and street performers scattered throughout the Abbeystowe grounds (located off Bribie Island Road, Caboolture). The festival ‘season’ will also feature two banquets held on June 30 and July 7, and a week of children-focused activities at the ‘Kids Dig It! Medieval Family Fun’ event. In the Garden Jobs for the yard in July

• Top up the mulch around fruit trees. Clean

out your compost bin, spread the contents

under your fruit trees, and start another.

• Feed your citrus trees. Use 125g of citrus

tree fertiliser per year of age of the tree up to

1.25kg. You need to do this three times a

year – July, November and February.

• Plant rhubarb now – either as crowns or small punnet plants.

• It’s a good time to transplant existing rose bushes to another spot in the garden if you need to.

• Cut back the time between watering for indoor plants to prevent mould and mildew growing.

• Treat your lawn for bindii as soon as it appears. Any of the broadleaf lawn herbicides, such as ‘bindii and clover killer’ will do – or get down and pull them out by hand.

• Prune roses in the second half of the month to stimulate new growth and flowering for spring.

• Take frangipani cuttings – leave them for two to four weeks before planting.

Barung Landcare Too much plastic

Every piece of plastic ever created is still on the planet today. Plastic pervades every aspect of our western lives: try the exercise of standing in a room or shop and imagining your surroundings with all the plastic removed – often, there’s not much left!

Plastic is an amazing material but much misused.

It is durable, light and inexpensive: without plastic we’d have no computers, phones, power tools, essential medical equipment, cars… plastic is everywhere.

But plastic’s accessibility and convenience as a manufacturing material has resulted in many uses inappropriate for a world choking on waste.

Single-use plastic packaging, “disposable” items like pens, toothbrushes, drinking straws and razors are piling up all over the world in enormous rubbish mountains and floating islands. Every day we add millions, billions of items to that horror.

What can we do? We can vote with our dollars for sustainable, biodegradable or long-lasting alternatives to single-use, disposable plastic items. We can say “no” to plastic packaging. We can take responsibility for what we throw out and how we dispose of things. Sure, we have recycling bins, but it’s what can’t go in the recycling bin that’s the problem.

Sign up for ‘Plastic-free July’ (www.plasticfreejuly.org) – it’s a very interesting exercise. The association between plastic packaging and convenience is thrown into sharp relief. You’ll definitely change your purchasing habits and maybe your whole outlook on shopping.

From the churches This year we are celebrating 70 years since the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church was established in the Glass House community.

As I looked back at the church and Glasshouse Country history, I was made very aware that churches were central to the life of the community.

In fact, the Christian culture and values permeated most parts of society. Most people could say the Lord’s Prayer, were familiar with Biblical characters and themes and could quote John 3:16 from memory. Churches played a central part in the social, educational and moral compass of our community.

The question remains: Does the church still play an important part in our society?

Mark McCrindle showed in recent research* (2017) on church and society that 22% of Australians know a great deal/a lot about the church in general. Also 18% of Australians know about the churches in their local community and 47% of Australians are unsure of the perceived

One thing that makes the Glass House community unique is the positive reputation of churches and their involvement in community.

Churches are certainly not perfect places. In fact the old saying goes, “Church is a hospital for sinners not a cemetery for saints.” I know that all the churches in our region aim on some level to improve the lives of the community.

I acknowledge the hurt some churches have caused but I also want to acknowledge the positives brought to the community in the past, present and, God willing, the future.

We had a visit from the Caboolture Senior Citizens on May 31 that was well attended and enjoyed. We took a trip with Mystic Mountains Tours on June 14 to The Abbey, which took in the church, and we were told the story of its establishment then went to the museum. From there we headed to Bribie Island where we saw another museum – all very interesting.

The Maleny Seniors and HACC will be visiting us on July 24. Cakes and items for the progressive raffle are required please, open 8am. Our next meeting will be on July 10 at the Beerwah Community Hall with lunch afterwards at Skippy Park. For further information ring Marie on 5496 9260.

Sport Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover What a great week of bowls was held at MBC this week.

Tuesday bowls saw all teams sharing wins, with Relma Godfrey and Marg Ginns winning the day on margins. Well done ladies. Thank you all for supporting our members’ bowls day.

Wednesday saw a great start to the new season of night bowls. It was well supported with new players and teams joining in and having some excellent fun. All are welcome.

Come on down at 6pm, and everyone gets a game.

The club championship games this week were the singles finals. The ladies had a seesawing match with Relma Godfrey coming through with some lovely draw bowls to get the required 25 shots to win, congratulations Relma and Marg on your efforts.

The men's final was a matchup between Jim Weidman and Ian Chatterton. Ian put up a great performance of consistent bowls, drawing to the head and holding his nerve when Jim applied any pressure. Congratulations to you both and well done on your performances.

For those readers not familiar with Scroungers, it is a draw format aimed at developing your bowls, not even sneaky up shots are needed to master it. Worth a go, come on down. To make it fair we adopt a handicap system. See you at 2.30 for 3pm on Friday to try out. Then stay on for nibbles and drinks in a great renovated bar area.

This week saw the last of our Thursday sessions for the River School. This proved to be great fun for all concerned and thanks to Maria for her efforts along with other staff.

Well done. Neil Drury, on his last day in Maleny before he goes back to Tasmania, staged a late comeback against Kath to edge her out 11-10. Vince found some form to defeat Nick 17-10.

Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds.

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES This time last year we reported that local sportsman Ben Lewis of Glass House Mountains won a gold medal at the Australian Judo Championships, winning the national title for the special needs division.

Well, Ben’s been triumphant again this year, winning the division at the recent Australian Championships held at Carrara on the Gold Coast.

Repeating his clean sweep of last year, Ben went through the competition undefeated and took home the gold medal in style by winning all his bouts in 38 seconds or less (the fastest being seven seconds).

Not only that, a selector for the Special Olympics spotted Ben’s judo skills and has selected him to become involved in a Special Olympics event to be held later this year.

Hopefully we will see a few faces down there supporting him. There will be no coaching or social roll ups this day.

It is a while away yet, but Wednesday August 1 there will be no social bowls in the morning apart from Ladies pennant who have a home game.

Instead we have a tour group coming from New Zealand with about 40 people for a 1pm game. It is not often we get groups in from overseas so I’d hope all those who support Wednesday morning, plus others, will be there for a game. There will only be so many spots available for a game, so first in best dressed. A sheet will be up at a later date. After the game there will be sandwiches and scones.
