T

his week’s cover story is about a local writer Jo Barrett who has an essay included in the current edition of the prestigious journal ‘Griffith REVIEW’.

Recently I was contacted by the journal’s publicist and told that a local writer had been featured and asked if we would be interested in writing a story. They would be more than happy to arrange an interview with the writer if we wanted.

It made me smile how different our world is to that of working in a national publication – as opposed to a community such as ours.

My initial response – I was just so please for Jo knowing how great it was that her work had been included in the publication and oh yeah of course we would be doing a story!

And no I would probably be okay to contact her myself having known her for the past eight years in a number of roles, including a short contact with us doing proofreading when a staff member was on maternity leave!

I then thought I’d have to call her on Thursday, as I knew that the following morning was a Wednesday and she would be up at Bankfoot House as part of working with Friends of Bankfoot House – I didn’t mention that to the publicist as I didn’t want to sound too small townish!

Adventurous life

Recently I was contacted by a publicist from the journal ‘Griffith REVIEW’ letting me know that local author Joanna Talberg (known locally as Jo Barrett) had contributed a memoir into their most recent edition – ‘Tasmania – The Tipping Point’ about her time living and farming in North Western Tasmania.

And that she would be doing a reading of selections of the essay at the Queensland launch of the current journal at the Avid Reader in West End on Thursday of next week.

This prestigious publication is a quarterly journal that describes itself as “celebrating good writing and promoting public debate”.

Each edition reflects a single theme and includes essays, reporting, memoirs, fiction, poetry and photography from Australia's best emerging and established writers.

When local writer Jo Barrett saw the theme for the edition, she was keen to have work included as she is currently working on a non-fiction story about her time at Top End farm in the North West of Tasmania in the 1970s. So it seemed like a perfect opportunity.

Titled ‘Stratus Anxiety – at the end of the track', Jo’s essay featured some of the experiences they faced during the two and a half years she and Peter lived at the isolated cattle farm, a two hour drive out of the town Zeehan.

Jo, who describes her childhood as that of an only child who grew up with over protective parents and few adventures, was inspired to spread her wings and seek out new experiences and opportunities.

She has always been fascinated by nature and it’s sustaining qualities.

So moving from Canberra where she had lived and gone to university, to living in the harsh but beautiful landscape of North West Tasmania certainly appealed to her sense of excitement.

Clearly their decision to move to Beerwah in 1979 proved a winner, for the first thirty years they made their living from farming peaches and nectarines and over the past five years they have both taken on other work locally – they definitely have their roots firmly planted here and cannot imagine living anywhere else.

Jo is currently undertaking a Graduate Diploma in Creative Writing at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Her work-in-progress is a book-length memoir titled Bush Antics. Having completed the first draft and now in the editing stage, Jo thinks her book is still six months away from completion, which of course once it is published GCNews will be making sure everyone knows about it.

Jo describes herself as growing up wanting adventure but got more than I bargained for.

Her talent has definitely made an impression on Talent scout Alison Goodwin as she has been chosen to represent Australia at the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) to be held in Hollywood, LA in July this year.

WCOPA is like the Olympics of the Performing Arts world, it is a massive event that runs over 15 days from July 5 to July 21 and is now in its 18th year.

Both Britney and her mum Tracey are really excited about this amazing opportunity – and dedicated mum Tracey is now keen at work fundraising so that she and Britney can go.

While Britney knows that there will be plenty tough competition, with contestants coming from over 40 individual countries, she will be working hard to prepare herself for her competition performances.

The competition incorporates 15 separate categories and Britney will be competing in the junior section of the Broadway, Gospel, Jazz, Opera and Open categories.

Britney will be part of Team Australia which is made up of just over 30 students. Four of them from Goodwin Performing Arts at Maroochydore have been chosen for the team.

Last week’s GCNews front cover featured Beerwah local Alicia McNamara and the team that assisted her in her Floodraiser 2013 event, including fiancé Matt Purontakanen and mates Amanda Johnston and Sam Engle.

Once Alicia decided to fundraise to help the people and animals that were affected by the floods she basically went into ‘Action Woman’ mode not letting anything stand in her way.

Giving herself less than three weeks, Alicia had to find a venue, organise entertainment, find a face painter, get prizes and donations, organise a raffle, and find someone to turn the sausages on the barbeque. As well as promote the event and another million little tasks in the lead up. On the day she was also there of course, making sure everything ran smoothly.

School friends from Beerwah High Gavin Jamieson and Chris Goodrich who perform under the name of The Jammin Sons quickly agreed to donate their time and perform on their day.

Alicia said everyone was just amazing.

“Steve Holmes from the Beerwah Hotel was happy to assist and we just had so many generous offers of prize donations from so many businesses both local and outside of the area. I just can’t thank them enough for their support,” she said.

Fiancé Matt was allocated the job of sausage cooker and was rapt on the day to get an assistant in Mal Brough who was happy to lend a hand.

Alicia had set herself a target of raising $2,000.00 for the Red Cross Flood appeal and the RSPCA. She totally blitzed that amount, bringing in nearly $2,500.00. This definitely put a smile on her face and no doubt will also do so for those that benefit from Alicia’s efforts.

Time for a change of ‘bad’ behavior

By Greg Brown GCNews received a Facebook message last week highlighting a problem which is probably more common in our region than any of us would like it to be.

‘Hi guys. Coochin Creek Reserve that runs around the back of Woodgrove Estate is constantly being polluted by litterbug twits! Can you please share this and hopefully some action can be taken and the idiots who keep doing this will be found.’

KJ, Beerwah Roger Callen, convenor of the Coochin Creek Reserve Bushland group, said that each time they have a working bee in the reserve, they have to spend some of the time collecting the rubbish left behind by others. “Drink cans, bottles and containers, food wrappers and plastic bags seem to be the most common litter," he said.

“Broken glass, bits of metal and other sharp things can be a real health and safety problem for the volunteers and the kids who use the swimming hole.

“We’re really happy that people want to use the area as a peaceful recreation place, but it’s disappointing to think that a handful of them don’t respect the natural beauty enough to simply take their rubbish with them when they go home,” said Roger.

Even our local Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski, does his bit each morning to clean up.

Rick goes walking around his neighbourhood with the dog lead in one hand and a garbage bag in the other.

“It shows that it’s probably a very small percentage of people who are doing the wrong thing, but they are doing the same thing repeatedly.

“I’d say that a part of whoever is doing the littering knows that it is the wrong thing to do. I’d ask them to think about the harm they are doing to our local environment and possibly our local tourism economy."

“The littering may give visitors the message that we’re a messy community who don’t care about our surroundings, which is definitely not what I’ve come to know about us."

Rick is working to reinvigorate the ‘Pick it Up’ program Council commenced in cooperation with insurance company Youi and other Sunshine Coast businesses.

“One of the proactive strategies in the battle against litter is for us to show that we won’t tolerate our communities being trashed.

“By simply picking up litter when you’re out walking and creating a cleaner neighbourhood, it’s hoped that litterbugs will see how much the locals care about their area, and they'll have second thoughts about their irresponsible behaviour,” he said.

Another way you can help is by getting involved in one of the Clean Up Australia day activities being held locally on Sunday, March 3.

Watching the images of the bush fires affecting our Southern neighbours in January reminded us how important a role the Rural Firies play in our community.

Not all of us have what it takes to be a volunteer; however the Sunshine Girls have come up with another way that we can help the Glass House Mountains and Beerwah Rural Fire Service.

The best part is that it involves having a good time, maybe a few drinks, some dancing, entertainment, winning some prizes and a great three course meal.

The ladies have organised a fabulous Dinner Dance to be held on March 23 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club from 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start.

You can expect a mix of entertainment including Rock and Roll dancers, a group of performers from a Men’s Choir, as well singing by two talented youth performers from Beerwah High.

The Sunshine Girls have put together some fabulous fundraising ideas for the night – and when they try and sell you a $20.00 ticket in their lucky dip, you will soon see that it is definitely not a kid’s game!

Beerwah Lions Club News

Contributed by Bob Banner For the Beerwah Lions, February has been a busy month so far, with 202 kilograms of empty aluminum cans collected and sent off for recycling.

Save sight Chairperson Gwen Kippen reported that 100 pairs of used spectacle have also been collected. The spectacles will now be graded at the Lions Redcliffe facility before being sent off to under privileged countries. Anyone wanting to donate their old glasses can leave them at the Glasshouse or Landsborough pharmacies, or Spec-Savers in Beerwah.

The clubs February dinner meeting was well attended by Lions and their partners as well as several prospective new members. Guest speaker was Haley Grady who’d travelled up from the Gold Coast. Haley, who is the president of the Forest lakes Lions Club, gave a dynamic address on the need to recruit younger people into Lions Clubs to ensure that the community service provided by Lions will continue well into the future.

The Beerwah Club does have several vacancies, and anyone over the age of 18 who’d like to enjoy the world wide fellowship of the Lions Organisation is cordially invited to contact Membership Chairman Bob Banner on 5494 9080.

February Floods

Many GCNews readers started the month of February recovering from days without power, phone or internet, and possibly feeling the effects of local flooding. Bureau of Meteorology records show that while over time there have been floods in the Stanley and Brisbane rivers in every month of the year, often with associated flooding in the coastal streams, February stands out as the month for floods.

Best known are the floods of February 1893, which devastated Brisbane and coastal Queensland.

In a strange twist of fate which was probably lost on local residents at the time, as they battled with their immediate problems, the 1893 flood put our district on the map and into the history books.

Through a day and night of torrential rain, a young Inigo Jones, living with his parents on their farm at Crohamhurst, measured 35.7 inches (907mm), an Australian 24 hour rainfall record which still stands to this day. Inigo wrote later that this experience gave a ‘natural salute’ to his interest in meteorology, leading to his career as a long range weather forecaster.

'Now, That WAS Rain!'

The flood of '93 celebrated its 42nd 'birthday' yesterday, and Brisbane citizens who attended a stump-capping ceremony at a new observatory being erected for Mr. Inigo Jones, at Crohamhurst, near Peachester, ate slices of a birthday cake baked to celebrate the anniversary.

On February 4, 1893, Mr. Jones measured at Crohamhurst, in the Upper Stanley watershed, the highest rainfall ever recorded in one day in Australia, and the fourth highest in the world. On that historic day, 36in of rain fell in 24 hours, and 6 1/2 ft of rain were recorded in four days.

Mr. Jones estimated that the volume of water that fell in the immediate neighbourhood, drained by three creeks, was equal to a stream 40 ft deep, 1000 ft wide, and 40 miles long.'

If we were to have a celebration now, 120 years later in February 2013, perhaps we should celebrate our good fortune in NOT experiencing such enormous rainfall, and avoiding the disasters which have occurred in many other Queensland centres.

Contributed by Ursula Starkovsky Our local Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains finished 2012 with a Bang (Christmas Party at King Ludwig Restaurant) and started 2013 in good shape.

During the Christmas holidays members of the club again helped with the car parking at Australia Zoo. This is a big event in the club’s annual calendar and we are extremely grateful for the opportunity given by Australia Zoo. Australia Day was a bit of a wash-out with bad weather spoiling the event but nevertheless, our members, helped by the Dunns (a Cystic Fibrosis family), serve the traditional damper and tea at the Zoo entrance. All monies raised and earned are used to pay for our charity contributions and our commitments to young people suffering from Cystic Fibrosis here on the coast.

At the end of January the club welcomed Tony Long as a new member.

We also had the opportunity to listen to our honorary member Terri Irwin, giving us the latest news from Australia Zoo. Robert and Bindi Irwin (both Friends of Rotary) informed us of their plans for 2013. Needless to say that it is always a real event when the Irwin’s rock up to a meeting. Of course there are more guest speakers and events, but listing them all would be too much. So, if anybody is interested to join a vibrant Club with both dedicated and fun members, check out the contact details below and give us a call.

Contributed by Chris Bell At the recent Super Local Chaplaincy Committee for Glasshouse Country Schools meeting, principal of Beerburrum Primary School Neil Harvey and principal of Landsborough Primary School Kristy Walton said they didn’t know how they operated before, without a school chaplain. Donna and Mike Turner with Linda Both Neil and Kristy sang the praises of their ‘chappies’ Donna and Linda who work tirelessly with students and teachers alike to make their lives healthier and happier.

Linda is also the chaplain for Beerwah Primary School where her work is greatly appreciated.

Scripture Union is currently interviewing candidates for the Government funded chaplain’s position at Glass House Primary School.

Glasshouse Country Schools are indeed fortunate to have these chaplains whose passion is to care for kids; and while their positions are partly funded by the government, community fundraising is still necessary; especially to keep Mike Turner full time at Beerwah High School.

“We have a wonderful sponsor called ‘Mr and/or Mrs Anonymous’ who donates $2,000 every few months,” said Chris.

School News First official event for new GCCC captains

On Tuesday, February 12 the College captains and chaplains from Glasshouse Country Christian College attended the Sunshine Coast Christian School Ecumenical Service at St Andrews at Peregian Beach.

This was the first official event the newly elected Primary, Middle and Senior School captains attended and they were excited and inspired by the occasion. After the service the GCCC captains were able to meet and chat to other school representatives over morning tea. This gave them the opportunity to network and share ideas.

The three College chaplains also really enjoyed the event and said a major highlight was just spending time getting to know the new GCCC captains on the bus ride to and from Peregian Beach.

About 16 schools from across the Sunshine Coast attended the service.

First Blue Light Disco for 2013

The next Beerwah Blue Light disco is on Friday, March 8 at the Beerwah Community Hall between 6.30pm and 9.30pm. Entry is only $7.00 with free entry into the raffle.

The Blue Light Committee have over $500.00 worth of electrical goods for the free raffle together with donations of passes from Australia Zoo, Big Kart Track and Aussie world; they’ve also had donations from Woolworths and IGA Beerwah with more pledges coming in!

This is the first Blue Light Disco for 2013 and the third to be held at Beerwah. The organising committee plan to hold four events throughout the year and look forward to them growing more popular each time they run.

All Beerwah Blue Light Association events are fully supervised by Queensland Police Service officers and community volunteers holding blue cards issued by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian.

Participants who attend the events will not be permitted to leave prior to closure time unless extenuating circumstances exist and they must be picked up at the door. Smoking, drugs and alcohol are not permitted.

School News from Emma Offord Glasshouse Country Christian College correspondent

Big dreams, big changes Well, 2013 is a brand new year and along with the new year comes new things. Glasshouse Country Christian College has been growing in size and this year they have their first double Year 12 class (which I am currently in).

Being in Year 12 feels much like being in Year 11, the same subjects, same teachers (mostly), and the same friends, give or take a few.

Even though the year is just starting out, I can tell it’s not going to be this easy breezy the whole year. With QCS coming up later on (which I certainly am not looking forward to) and lots of assignments to handle, life is going to get hectic.

Along with the title of being Year 12’s comes the Year 12 workload.

This semester in English the Year 12’s are studying Shakespeare’s play, ‘Hamlet’. No offence to Mr Shakespeare or anything but, ‘thou dost not hath any idea what thou say most of the time…’

As for the big dreams (life dreams, not daydreaming), people get to choose what profession they would like to work in. I am still having a little trouble with that. Hopefully, I’d like to get into the Creative Industries, hence my Traineeship and Certificate III in Media. However, in reality, everybody has big dreams and big unexpected changes happen; you just have to embrace the changes and challenge life head on. Bring it on 2013!

Student leaders investiture

A special assembly was held at Landsborough State School recently for the 2013 Student Leader Investiture Ceremony.

Newly elected school captains, vice vaptains, house captains, class captains and student councillors were presented with their leadership badges. School Adopt-a-Cop, Senior Constable David Caffrey, spoke at the ceremony about the importance of leadership and he congratulated all the 2013 leaders on their appointment. Principal, Kristy Walton, called each student leader to the stage individually to receive their badge and certificate. She was assisted by P & C President, Danielle Booth, and the proud parents of each leader who were given the honour of pinning the badge on their child.

In their roles, the student leaders will be entrusted to show leadership and be attentive to the interests of their fellow students and the school.

During the ceremony, they were asked to pledge an oath of office to accept responsibilities. The pledge is a reminder to all student leaders about their responsibilities as a leader and how they should carry out their duties.

We congratulate the new student leaders for 2013 and wish them success in their new roles.

Recycle your computers and televisions for free Local people and businesses can recycle their unwanted computers and televisions (e-waste) at events during February and March to help reduce the amount of recyclable items going into Coast landfills.

Sunshine Coast Council has partnered with Drop Zone to provide a number of free e-waste recycling events, which will be held at various tips across the Coast which started at Noosa landfill and Cooroy transfer station on Saturday, February 23.

E-waste disposal will be free of charge for all televisions - such as CRTs, plasma, LCD and projection televisions - and computers and computer products.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Tony Wellington said the program was in line with council’s Waste Minimisation Strategy 2009 - 2014.

“Electronic waste is the fastest growing waste category in Australia. It’s growing three times faster than any other type of waste, and contains hazardous materials that must be managed in a safe manner,” he said.

“We can help protect our natural resources and environment through responsible recycling - that includes reducing the amount of electronic waste that’s currently going into our landfills.

“All items dropped off at e-waste events will be taken to an approved recycler, who will dismantle and separate the different components of each product.

“There are many materials that can be recovered from computers and televisions such as glass and plastics, iron, steel, aluminium and copper, plus precious metals such as gold, platinum and silver.

The medical literature says infantile colic is difficult to diagnose and that if it is colic, most children will ‘outgrow it’ by 12 weeks of age.

The common treatment for infantile colic includes drugs like dimethicone, advice to change formula, or to ‘wait it out’ as the baby will eventually ‘outgrow it’. Most of these treatments, however, haven’t offered parents and babies the relief hoped for.

There is a better option! Several weeks of sleepless nights and living with a baby in pain can seem like forever. Chiropractors have known that specific spinal adjustments can get to the cause of what is ailing your child. There are numerous case studies where infants with colic have been relieved of their painful symptoms with chiropractic care.

In one study, 316 infants with moderate to severe colic were adjusted.

94 per cent of the children within 14 days of chiropractic care (usually three visits) showed a satisfactory response. After four weeks, the improvements were maintained. One fourth of these infants showed great improvement after the very first chiropractic adjustment. The remaining infants all showed improvement within 14 days. Note: 51 per cent of the infants had undergone prior unsuccessful treatment, usually drug therapy.

Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987 Glasshouse Country Mayor Mark Jamieson and the majority of Sunshine Coast Councillors met in Beerwah recently which gave me an opportunity to reinforce how Glasshouse Country towns can be successfully competitive given the major regional developments occurring on our doorstep. The Mayor and Councillors took the opportunity to walk around town, meet local people and hear about the opportunities and challenges faced by local business in the division. We also had a well-attended meeting with local farmers who powerfully relayed the impacts of the wild weather that has seriously reduced the harvest of fruit and nuts and destroyed numerous productive trees.

Draft Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme Council has started reviewing over 2,500 submissions made by the community in response to the Draft Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme.

Ten major community and business organisations including the Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce made presentations on the draft scheme to council.

I was genuinely pleased with the amount of involvement, high level of detail and quality feedback we received about the draft scheme.

Referendum There is going to be a resolution after March 9 regarding the possible de-amalgamation of the two northern divisions of council. Whichever way the vote goes, Sunshine Coast Council is ready to move forward and continue delivering valuable services for the community.

The wet weather seems to have really settled in and Sunshine Coast’s disaster and emergency teams have partnered with local hardware and landscape supply businesses to provide the necessary sand, sandbags, tips and demonstrations for do-it-yourself sandbagging. The main aim is for people to be prepared in case of flooding and have sandbags at the ready as they can help to slow the movement of water. Check council’s website for the list of participating suppliers.

There’s a really interesting American speaker, Richard Heinberg, who was interviewed in Australia last year, on the Big Ideas program on ABC Radio National. The interview was aired on February 18 and you can podcast or download it. I’m recommending it as he has a different take on energy, economic and ecological issues and thought you might be interested in what he has to say.

Adopt-a-Road is a wonderful way for volunteers and groups to give back to the local environment by removing litter from local roadways and streets.

Volunteers are supported to undertake coordinated litter clean ups and other activities along approved streets and roadways in the community. Adopting groups decide on the section of road they wish to adopt (minimum of 2km).

Is anyone else in Beerwah fed up with the dilapidated look of the old Retravision shop on the corner of Simpson Street and Peachester Road?

It is over six years ago that this shop became vacant, and it is making Beerwah’s Main Street look like a rundown country town. Also IGA’s damaged doorway isn’t helping.

When are the owners of Beerwah Market place going to do something?

We have heard rumours for years that shops in Simpson Street will be rebuilt.

The State Government decreed that Beerwah would be a major Hinterland Town. Perhaps they haven’t been here lately.

This week’s article is about being a dad – if you are a dad, I hope there is something here that is of use to you. First of all I would like to congratulate you on being a part of the best club in the world – the ‘Daddy Club’. This prestigious club has been around since the dawn of time and has its fair share of challenges and rewards but is more important to our world than we probably realise.

I’ve been in the Daddy Club for nearly 10 years.

I tell you what though; when I first joined the club I was like ‘a deer in the headlights’ as it were – naïve and feeling ill-equipped for the task ahead. Some of the ‘dad mistakes’ that I have made include being too busy with work, not spending enough time with them and simply being a grump at home; but I have worked at not doing that stuff to the point where I am really enjoying being a dad and am being rewarded in seeing my three sons respond to me fathering them. I would like to share two things that have helped me become a better dad…

We are stronger than we think One of the things that I have learned is that being a good dad doesn’t come easy – we need to put effort into it. We need to think about what we are trying to achieve in our fathering and then put it into practice – consistently and GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

lovingly. There are times when I get a bit lazy and let my wife deal with family stuff on her own, and that is not fair on her or the kids. I need to be active in the kids’ lives and not get lazy.

We can’t do this on our own The other thing I have learned – more recently is how important it is that I am not trying to go it alone in my fathering. So often we as blokes tend to battle on – running on our own steam and run into trouble down the line… I really value my own dad and mentors as well as my mates who have kids of their own; they are a real source of strength and inspiration as each day I embark on a new adventure in fathering.

Last but not least, I couldn’t ever know how to father my kids without first knowing that God is there to help me each day – to give me strength, patience and wisdom to handle all the things we must deal with as dads.

Happenings Out and About Fish Stockers Challenge 2013

A 'Come and Try it' event on Saturday, March 2 in the afternoon in the Beerwah State Forest - two courses available. Experienced people on hand to assist any newcomers and ride the course with you if needed.

There’s also a Rider of the Year event on Sunday, March 10, with five courses on offer to suit all levels of fitness and navigation ability.

Kilcoy Come and Try Motocross Day

Motocross fever will hit Kilcoy when Kilcoy Motorcycle Club hosts a free motocross ‘Come and Try Day’ on Sunday, March 3.

The event will be held at Glenfern Park, corner Neurum and Runges Road, Glenfern, Kilcoy with gates open from 6.45am for a 8.00am start and finish approximately at 11.30am. The club will be charging a small track maintenance fee of $10.00 per rider to ensure good riding conditions.

The day is a chance for new riders of all ages to come down to the track and try out motocross for themselves under the guidance of experienced riders and officials.

Motocross is one of the most popular motorcycling sports in Australia, with plenty of interest in national and international motocross competitions.

All new riders will be issued with a free ‘Come and Try Day Licence’, and have the opportunity to apply for a free Annual Recreational or Mini Licence or a discounted Annual Junior or Senior National Licence after the event.

The ‘Come and Try’ session will be followed by a practice session for riders that have held or are current holders of a Motorcycling Australia licence.

Not many gardeners refer to this plant by its botanic name of Tropaeolum.

It is most commonly known as Nasturtium and also as Indian cress.

It is possibly one of the most useful plants in the productive garden.

Originating from South and Central America, Tropaeolum is a genus of over 80 species of annuals and perennials, most of which are scrambling ground covers or climbers. Nasturtium The botanic name Nasturtium is applied to water cress and related species. Tropaeolum was given the common name Nasturtium due to its similar peppery taste.

The Nasturtium we all know, T. majus is a very attractive plant with showy bright green leaves and fiery red yellow and orange flowers. It has the ability to quickly cover unsightly piles of gravel or rubbish in the garden or turn a decrepit old fence into a scene of cottage garden beauty.

Nasturtium plants are happy in poor to moderately fertile soil. If the soil is too rich or nutrient levels are high from other sources, the plant will produce a vast amount of leaves though few flowers. Grow them in a sunny spot or they will become straggly. If the shade is too strong and they will start to climb with long internodes and look messy.

Nasturtiums are most commonly propagated by seeds which are pea-size and hard when ripe. Soak the seed in warm water overnight before planting to speed up germination.

Cuttings can be used to propagate a desired colour or cultivar of the plant.

This can be done in a glass of water. Ensure that one node is below or just at the water level. Otherwise place the cutting in a loose potting mix which is kept moist.

It is a great companion plant for many different vegetables and fruit trees including Brassicas, Citrus and anything in the melon family. It repels insects such as aphids and can act as a living mulch around trees and shrubs, keeping the soil moist and cool.

Nasturtium has many culinary uses as all parts of the plant are edible.

It is high in vitamin C and many minerals. The seed can even be used as an alternative to capers. Nasturtium has also been used in traditional medicine for generations due to its expectorant and antiseptic qualities.

The only down side comes from the hardiness of the plants. Nasturtium has naturalised itself around the eastern side of NSW. The plant is not hard to control but left to its own devices, can get grow rampantly.

A pretty plant which is easy to grow, helps the garden, tastes good and has health benefits. Sounds too good to be true? Try growing some Nasturtium and find out that the truth is good.

Contributed by Jenny Kellie Yet again the rain has had an influence on our game. Only half the course was playable on Thursday, so 37 girls played the back nine twice.

The fairways were at bit wet underfoot, but that didn't stop Cathy Stone from scoring 34 points in the Single Stableford competition. Cathy won a voucher kindly donated by Ross and Anne at The Garden Terrace Coffee Lounge. Lesley Eggleston took home another voucher from The Garden Terrace as runner up with a score of 32 points.

NTPs went to Andrea Campbell with her 4th shot into the 11th. Heather Henn took out the 16th, while Cathy was closest on the 18th. The ball rundown went to 24 points.

The Weekend Pennant team played against the team from Peregian Springs on a soggy course at Headland. The team scored one win, one square and three losses to score 1.5 points for the day.

Maybe not our best effort but we are hoping for better things when we take on Pacific Harbour at Caboolture on Sunday. Let's hope the rain clears away soon. Until then, stay safe and good golfing.

Division team continued on their winning way, winning one and losing one on a play off. The total score was GG 49 Kandanga 35. Division 12/13 Men’s Bronze Division played Cannon Hill at Glasshouse winning three of the five games which was a pleasing result for these boys. The individual games scores were close. The overall points were GG 119 Cannon Hill 120.
