Hi Everyone...

Recently I got to start my working day in Caloundra at the Senior Citizens Hall with around 170 other enthusiastic locals who were there for the Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle’s Community Awards.

While the focus of the day was on the people receiving the awards, it was really nice to be in a room full of people who there because the contribution they make in our local community had been recognised and appreciated by others.

Those nominated didn’t know who nominated them, but I imagine it is nice to know that the efforts you contribute are appreciated by others.

What I really enjoyed about the day was being able to catch up with all of the nominees from our side of the Bruce Highway, who, not surprisingly, were people and groups who have previously featured on the pages of Glasshouse Country & Maleny News.

It was a great event and to those of you who were nominated but weren’t able to attend on the day, thanks for what you bring to our community!

Local News Buy, buy, buy strawberries Last week was devastating for strawberry farmers across the country including many of our local farmers, with a small number of confirmed strawberry tampering incidents.

Queensland Strawberries (QS) said it knows the Australian public feel for the situation growers have been placed in through no fault of their own and that they had felt the love and support through social media and lots of messages shared the old-fashioned way too.

QS is keen to share the message that if you want to help our growers, it is really simple - make sure you get out and buy, buy, buy strawberries.

Manager of Matildas Fruit Barn at Glass House Mountains Joel Topfer said that they continued to sell strawberries throughout the crisis and had seen really strong support from locals who were keen to support the industry.

Local retailers are making sure it is possible for customers to follow this advice by having local strawberries on their shelves.

If would like to pick your own you can head to Strawberry Fields at Laxton Road, Palmview, which is open from 8am–4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

One local who came out early on social media with her support for local strawberry farmers was award winning food blogger Amanda Smyth from Glass House Mountains. She is encouraging her followers not to ditch their strawberries.

Locals shine in community awards State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle recently congratulated the local community for their outstanding representation in the sixth annual Caloundra Electorate Community Awards.

In the largest event since the awards started, 180 people filled the CCSA Hall in Caloundra to hear the winners announced for each of the nine award categories, who were selected from 71 individual nominations.

The categories included Young Achiever, Young Sport Achiever, Sports Achiever, Environmental Achiever, Community Volunteer, Community Group, Community Event of the Year, Business Achiever and Caloundra Hall of Fame Identity.

“These awards are about recognising the best of the best in our community and I am continually inspired by the people who are nominated each

year,” Mr McArdle said.

In the Environmental Contributor category, Friends of the Forest member Jan Kesby took out the ultimate award in recognition of her 23 years devoted to the environment, including educating thousands of children and adults on waterways, fauna, flora and bush tucker. Jan was one of the core members of the Save Steve Irwin Way Forest campaign, which involved six years work with the Department of Transport and Main Roads. The main outcome was the re-design of the Caloundra Interchange and saving the Beerwah State Forest from development.

Another finalist in the same category was Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest Group member Carola Fuentes. The group was also nominated in the Community Group of the Year category.

The long-awaited Container Refund Scheme (CRS) is finally making its way to Queensland and Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is keen to make sure the electorate of Glass House and its community and sporting groups are ready to make the most of it.

“It’s pretty simple. From November 1 when you return your container you get a refund and in so doing we will hopefully see an increase in recycling across the state,” Mr Powell said. The scheme is run by Container Exchange Ltd (CoEx), a not-for-profit entity funded by manufacturers with an independent chair and board who report directly to the Queensland Government.

“CoEx is aiming to provide communities with social, economic and environmental benefits through their innovative container refund initiative,” Mr Powell said.

Most containers between 150ml and 3 litres will be eligible for a 10 cents refund, and all these containers must be recycled. A full list of eligible containers can be found at the Containers for Change website www.containersforchange.com.au. Mr Powell is urging all residents to familiarise themselves with this list before the scheme begins.

“While you are able to collect the refund yourself, you may also like to nominate a registered charity, community group, school, not-for-profit organisation or sporting group to receive your refund instead. These groups are able to register as a donation point by applying through the CoEx website,” Mr Powell said.

“I want to assure residents that this process will be made as convenient as possible.

Container refund points will be located at a mix of permanent and mobile locations, Chair of CoEx, Alby Taylor, which can with Member for Glass include depots, Hou se Andrew Powell mobile/pop-ups, bag drops and reverse vending machines. I want this process to be an easy one for everyone,” he said.

“Already, refund locations have been approved at Caboolture, Nambour and Caloundra. However, I anticipate that many more refund locations will appear before the scheme kicks off and councils give further approvals.”

Mr Powell said that the best way to stay up to date on CRS locations was to keep an eye on the Containers for Change website. Confirmation of sites that will be ready to operate from day one will be made available on the website by mid-October.

“I am excited to see how the community embraces this scheme, as I know it is idea that many of my constituents have raised with me over the years. They have been asking for a CRS scheme and I am pleased that we’ve finally been able to deliver it,” Mr Powell said.

Arson attack on Maleny Cheese Factory Tragedy struck on Monday, September 17 at the Maleny Cheese Factory when an arsonist set fire to the front of the premises in the early hours of the morning.

Eight fire crews arrived about 4.15am to find the front of the building and verandah ablaze, as another fire burnt in a nearby industrial wheelie bin next to the building.

The fire spread from the front of the premises to a downstairs office area, causing significant structural damage and destroying stocks of dairy product estimated to be worth tens of thousands of dollars.

The site was declared a crime scene, with investigations ongoing by both the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services forensic team and Queensland Police arson experts.

Dramatic CCTV footage of the arsonist was released showing the brazen culprit skulking about the premises before lighting a fire that exploded in a fireball, sending the pyromaniac flying backwards.

Police are hunting for the man responsible and are appealing for anyone with information or who saw anything in the area or who have dashcam or CCTV footage to urgently contact Policelink on 131 444.

Maleny Cheese Factory business manager Jenn Bucher said the clean-up and repairs were well under way and they hoped to be able to reopen as soon as possible.

“Fortunately, no one else was injured in the explosion and resulting fire, but we’re devastated for our staff and dairy farmer suppliers,” Jenn said.

“We will know more once the structural inspection takes place and we anticipate that we will be able to use parts of the building on a staged approach.

“Our initial priority will be getting our cheese making operational as soon as possible so we can get our product back out to the retailers who sell our stock,” Jenn said.

“It may take a few months for us to re-open the café at the factory, and we would appreciate the support of the public in purchasing our products when they see it at their local retailers.”

GC&M News will keep readers informed of when a reopening date for the businesses is announced.

As another month flies by we are getting closer to Christmas …. and that’s a great introduction to mention Maleny Commerce is the event coordinator for the annual Maleny Christmas Festival. This year it will be held on Friday, December 14 from 5.30pm.

The festival is a massive undertaking for our chamber and is headed by our secretary Karen Shaw, who has a small volunteer committee to create all that you see, do and experience at this event. If you are attending the event this year give Karen and her team a shout out of thanks.

This year the committee is encouraging retail CBD businesses to stay open on the night of the event to allow visitors a spot of late-night Christmas shopping.

A new layout for the main street on the night will ensure businesses are a part of this magical event. There are a lot of new things happening, so like our Facebook page Maleny Christmas Festival and street party to keep abreast.

Recently I and two other Chamber representatives were invited as guests of the economic development unit of Sunshine Coast Council to the Village Wellness Masterclass. The event was about creating great spaces in our towns that make people want to stop, sit, stay and spend.

The event was attended by councillors, business representatives, tourism operators and developers. We certainly walked away with some ideas, but the best thing was that Maleny was used as a representation of a town that is “getting it right”. Nice wide streets for people to walk, eclectic shopping, great in-town meeting spaces, places to eat and sit along the footpath, and green spaces in the heart of town. Of course, there is always room for more and we have a list for consideration.

As I sit at my office desk writing this and listening to a local musician play in the street, I think to myself what a wonderful thing for locals and visitors to our town to experience. Yes, we do get it right!

Community News Roger gets on his bike

It has been 60 years since Roger Bonhomme regularly rode a bike, but after recently rekindling his passion for cycling, he decided to take on the fast, flat and furious ride that is the Brisbane to Gold Coast (B2GC) Cycle Challenge.

The 76-year-old Beerwah resident was given one of his son’s old mountain bikes last Christmas and set out on several trips around the Glass House Mountains and Ewan Maddock Dam. “I found that really enjoyable, so I moved onto a bigger project – the 160 kilometre Brisbane Valley Rail Trail,” he said “Over five Sundays, I completed the whole length of the trail, with the longest leg being a tough 84 kilometres.

“I think the challenge of riding my first 100 kilometres from Brisbane to the Gold Coast is worth the effort – increasing my weekly rides in number and length, training, watching my diet, etc.”

He said he had been surprised and encouraged to see how many women enjoy cycling on the Sunshine Coast.

“I’ve been absolutely amazed – young girls from around seven years old, to ladies of, let’s say a more distinguished age.

“I’m hoping to find a lady rider with similar interests to mine, so it’s wonderful to see.”

Bicycle Queensland CEO Anne Savage encouraged people of all ages and abilities to get involved in the Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle Challenge.

“Roger is living proof that you’re never too old to get back on a bike and relive your childhood,” she said.

Thousands of riders will take over a traffic-free South East Busway in Brisbane on Sunday, October 14, pedalling 100 kilometres to the Gold Coast.

Maleny Light Horse on show Contributed by Elaine Reeve The Beersheba Museum at Parklands Drive (off Porter’s Lane), North Maleny will be open to the community this Saturday, September 29, from 1–4 pm.

If the weather is fine it will be a great opportunity for those keen to see the Maleny Light Horse Troop training.

The training field, adjacent to the Beersheba Museum, will be formally named the Ziza Field in remembrance of this unique event that took place on September 29, 1918 at Ziza in the Middle East.

The Australian War Memorial explains the battle as a force of nearly 5000 from the Turkish Maan garrison that encountered elements of the 5th Australian Light Horse Regiment at Ziza. For one night members of the Light Horse shared food and fire with soldiers of the Turkish Army, and joined forces with the Turks against the Arabs from the Beni Sakhr tribes.

The garrison was hopelessly cut off and had been fleeing northwards to Amman when it was contacted by two squadrons of the 5th Light Horse under the command of Lt Colonel Donald Cameron.

The Turkish commander wanted to surrender but was unwilling to lay down arms to the small Australian force since that might mean annihilation by the Arabs.

Major General Sir Edward Chaytor, Commanding Officer of the ANZAC Mounted Division, and Lt Col Cameron decided that the Turks should remain in their trenches and keep their arms until stronger reinforcements arrived the following morning.

The 7th Light Horse Regiment assisted in the defence of the position overnight and this unlikely coupling of Turkish and Australian troops stood guard until daylight.

By the next morning the New Zealand Mounted Rifle Brigade had arrived, and it was then safe to disarm the Turks and formally take them prisoner.

Even though the Turks had the greater numbers, Lt Col Cameron noted that they appeared to be “worn out” and their commander was concerned about the welfare of his men.

After many years of bitter war, it is a credit to the character of the Australian Light Horsemen to be able to show compassion for those who were no longer able to defend themselves.

Outspoken is back

Outspoken will host two events in October and a third in November. First up on Wednesday, October 10 is Kristina Olsson (pictured), best-selling author of the memoir Boy, Lost, who will talk about her new novel, Shell, a big, bold and hauntingly beautiful story that captures a defining moment in Australia's history.

It is Sydney, 1965, and Danish architect Jørn Utzon’s striking vision for the Sydney Opera House has begun to transform the skyline unleashing a storm of controversy, while the shadow of the Vietnam War and a deadly lottery threaten to tear the country apart.

Viewed through the eyes of two unforgettable characters caught in the eye of the storm, Shell captures a world

on the brink of seismic change.

The second event on Thursday, October 17 is with Gillian Triggs, the former president of the Human Rights Commission who withstood relentless political and media pressure for five tumultuous years, defending the defenceless. In her memoir, Speaking Up, published this month, Triggs shares the values that have guided her convictions and the causes she has championed.

She dares women to be a little vulgar and men to move beyond their comfort zones to achieve equity for all. Her book is an irresistible call to everyone who yearns for a fairer world.

The third event will be on November 29 when Outspoken will host a conversation with the outstanding and universally respected journalist Kerry O’Brien, talking about his self-titled memoir.

As well as these marvellous writers the events will introduce authors Josepha Dietrich, Patrick Nunn and Shelley Davidow. All the writers will be interviewed by local author Steven Lang.

The Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre recently launched a computer mentoring program as an inexpensive and friendly way for people to build their computer skills.

Mentoring sessions are in full swing with people heading home to use their computers with greater confidence and booking additional sessions as needed.

This program is suitable for all age groups, so don't allow your age to deter you. No one is too old to learn computer skills.

One mentor, Peter Dodwell, was first introduced to computers after retirement and undertook a diploma course in computer technology.

Now, at almost 90, he is vice president of the Sunshine Coast Computer Club and occasionally presents tutorials on various aspects of computer usage. He is also available to help members learn new skills or overcome problems.

If you would like to start from scratch on the computer, brush up or advance your skills, don’t hold back. Book yourself in for a computer mentoring session.

Sessions run for approximately 30 minutes or longer if required.

A minimum of a gold coin contribution for sessions will help to fund the Neighbourhood Centre.

Christmas in Maleny

The date has been set and work has begun on plans for the Maleny Christmas Festival and Street Party to be held on Friday, December 14, to coincide with the last day of the school year.

One of the annual highlights of the event is the major community fundraising raffle.

The support from locals in purchasing tickets in last year’s “trolley full of Christmas” saw a $1400 donation go to the Maleny Rural Fire Service.

Maleny Commerce, the event organiser, has decided that all funds raised from this year’s raffle will go to CHASM Housing, which develops and implements solutions to increase the supply of small and affordable houses in Maleny and surrounds, with consideration for the environment.

EcoVenture 2018

If you are a 20-something looking for a unique outdoor experience that combines abseiling and creek scrambling with koala conservation, you should register now for EcoVenture 2018.

Joining qualified instructors and conservation experts, you will uncover one of the Sunshine Coast’s hidden gems and discover a wild place where conservation meets adventure.

EcoVenture will be held on Saturday, October 13 at Kirby’s Road Environment Reserve, Obi Obi. Perched between Kondalilla National Park and Maleny National Park, the 213-hectare reserve is home to koalas, flying foxes, migratory birds and up to nine different species of frogs.

While you get acquainted with the amazing natural surroundings and the creatures that call the reserve home, you can choose how you want to explore it - from creek scrambling, orienteering, weaving, abseiling and more.

Lunch and a morning snack are included. To give back and help enhance the environment, the aim is to plant 600 native trees, shrubs and grasses to restore an area of the reserve.

Community Groups Beerwah Writers Group book launched

Changes afoot for Bankfoot House

The state heritage listed Bankfoot House in the Glass House Mountains, once a Cobb & Co lunch stop on the journey from Brisbane to the Gympie goldfields, is set to relaunch itself as the preeminent heritage precinct on the Sunshine Coast.

From Friday, October 5, visitors will enjoy free entry to Bankfoot House as well as extended opening hours from 10am-3pm, Friday-Sunday, excluding public holidays.

The dedicated volunteers from the Friends of Bankfoot House, who have been instrumental in maintaining and interpreting the property since 2006, will continue to play an important role in helping to provide guided tours.

The major Bankfoot House 150th celebratory event will be held on Sunday, October 14 from 10am-pm.

Hinterland Kids A little bit of Africa comes to Peachester

Students, staff and parents at Peachester State School were treated to a lively and interactive performance by African drumming group Salaka in the last week of the school term.

Students had spent the term learning about African music, particularly music from Ghana, with their specialist music teacher, Ms Emma Creed, in preparation for the performance by Salaka.

“It has been a wonderful way to inspire the children,” Ms Emma said. “The students explored and developed their musical skills and creativity through singing, playing and dancing in music lessons and that preparation made for a great musical and cultural experience.

“We sang, danced, played and celebrated through music. Every student got to play a djembe and join in the massed drumming experience. Even the staff and some parents got into the act,” Ms Emma said.

“In Africa, everyone is musical. There is an old proverb that says: ‘If you can walk you can dance, if you can talk you can sing’.

“It was a great way to celebrate the completion of the term and bring the Peachester school community together. The students were actively engaged and loved every second of the performance.”

Evening of the Arts

Contributed by Robyn Atwell After conducting its biannual Arts Week, Beerwah State School celebrated with the culminating event of an Evening of the Arts.

The theme for Arts Week was “Circles” and there were many impressive displays by students including lanterns turned into animals, string art, tiedyeing and a jaw-dropping ferris wheel made from bike wheels and jelly cups.

Workshops were conducted by Raw Art of Brisbane including popular activities such as chemograms, clay, print-making and mask-making.

The talents of the Beerwah Kindy and Helping Hands were also showcased on the night.

Our thanks and appreciation to all who helped make this evening a wonderful success.

Fresh Food Discovery Tour Glass House Early Education Centre strongly believes in promoting healthy food choices. As part of this commitment, the centre is always looking at fun and engaging ways to reinforce this message, including going on exciting excursions like the ‘Fresh Food Discovery Tour’ the children recently attended.

Believing that introducing nutritious meals and healthy food choice options at an early age will pave the way to a lifetime of healthy food choices, Glass House Early Education Centre follows the philosophy of parent company Queensland Childcare Services (QCCS), which supports the idea that children develop their tastes and attitudes about food and nutrition in their early years. Centre coordinator Dee McCann said the Fresh Food Discovery Tour highlighted how much awareness the centre’s children have with healthy eating.

“I was proud to see how brave, bold, curious and attentive they were in learning from their community members. It was great to see how much the concept of ‘healthy eating’ is already embedded as part of our program,” Dee said.

Recently an excited group of children from the ‘school ready room’ gathered with Miss Emma and Miss Dee to put on their green QCCS shirts (which made them look very grown up) and discuss excursion safety – before heading off on the food discovery tour to Woolworths Beerwah.

The fun began the moment they stepped onto the bus. Everyone was excited and there was lots of laughter and conversation about the things that could be seen from the bus seats.

Once the group arrived at Woolies, the children all got their own hats to wear with their names written on the side.

The tour started in the bakery and the children watched enthralled at how bread rolls are made and even got to knead a piece of dough, which proved to be hugely entertaining. Then the group walked past the deli and learnt how chickens are cooked, what ham looks like before it is sliced and all the different cuts of chicken meat. Then they were off to explore the produce section where the children learnt all about different types of fruit and vegetables – and what they do to help bodies stay healthy and strong.

A highlight of the tour was being allowed to go behind the scenes to where the stock is kept.

They also saw how big the fridges and freezers are and where the deliveries come in. After lots of exploring everyone was hungry, so the

children were treated to some amazing fruit and vegetable platters from produce within the store.

When everyone got back to the centre they all agreed it had been a fantastic day.

The importance of healthy eating is a focus for the owners of QCCS, which also runs the Healthy Cooking Company. This healthy meal service was originally established to assist in developing positive eating habits in the children who attended QCCS centres. Meals are designed by qualified chefs and dietitians using locally sourced fruit and vegetables from local suppliers.

All meals prepared by the Healthy Cooking Company contain minimal sodium and refined sugar and are made without the use of nuts and eggs to ensure the safety of children who experience severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to these products. The food is preservative free as well as being free from artificial colours and flavours.

Special dietary or cultural needs are catered for wherever possible and centre families are also able to pre-order take home family meals, which has proven to be a popular option.

You Said It Unimpressed

It is all very well, and we all agree, that plastic bags should be eliminated. However, many non-food retailers are just getting on the bandwagon by not offering their customers an alternative.

My wife recently passed a ladies’ garment retail shop and was impressed by a dress on display. She tried it on and when satisfied went to pay for it.

The dress was folded up and handed to her with no offer of packaging. She then had to continue shopping with a dress in her hand. Later she went to purchase underwear in a Target shop and was again handed three pairs of knickers with no offer of packaging.

At least she was able to stuff them into her handbag.

Have tissue paper and paper bags now also been banned? Or is this just a flat-out money grab by retailers to avoid the cost of ‘doing business’?

Is it any wonder that more and more shoppers are using online retailers where they seem to have no problem in packaging your purchases?

Suitable land for sale

An acreage property directly behind Maleny Showgrounds will be auctioned in the near future by the Public Trustee and I have attempted to interest the Sunshine Coast Council in acquiring it to turn into a public park. This property has abundant wildlife, a majestic Moreton Bay fig tree and sections of wetland. Sadly the council has advised that there is no requirement for them to purchase additional land in Maleny township area. Surely as we pay an environmental levy in our rates, purchase of land for a public park should be a priority to enable expansion of Maleny Showgrounds in the future. If this proposal was down the coast would the council look at this more favourably?

Protection of worker’s rights

During the 19th century industrial revolution workers worked 16 hours a day in mines and factories for starvation wages, and children as young as four worked in dangerous conditions.

Individual workers were powerless to ask for better wages and conditions. Workers, by joining together in unions and striking, were able to gradually demand a living wage and safe working conditions, for which we have to thank for the various laws which now protect workers’ rights .

Now that unions are in decline and people take what unions have won for them for granted, we are now seeing the reverse - the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, leading to increasing homelessness, while workers find themselves in less and less secure employment.

Yes, some unions have problems or are corrupt, but can Olive Hockings (GC&M News, September 12) name me a human institution that isn’t – churches, politics, sport, banks, corporations?

Despite this, it’s what they stand for that is important, ie, a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work, secure employment and safe working conditions.

Schools need to include the union movement as an important part of our history, partly responsible for the rise in living standards in Western countries over the past two centuries.

Young people need to know their rights at work, what pay and conditions they are entitled to, and what to do or where to go for help if they are bullied, harassed, underpaid or not paid at all. Dr Jonas Salk warned in the 1930s: "If all insects on Earth disappeared, within 50 years all life on Earth would end. If all human beings disappeared from the Earth, within 50 years all forms of life would flourish".

Insects play a huge role to recycle nutrients by decomposing plant litter and dung, by providing a food source for birds, mammals and amphibians, and are important pollinators. The current pollinator crisis first came to notice due to a fall in bee numbers. The widespread global use of insecticides and pesticides play their part.

You may remember what Chris Darwin, the great great grandson of Charles Darwin, says: "We are living in a car crash moment of natural catastrophes, with climate disasters meeting mass extinctions and leading to human hunger on an unimaginable scale."

The Western world is now bereft of leaders who have any understanding of what is happening and have no vision of what can be done to turn this around.

Instead they fight one another over who leads a political party.

Not only that, they continue to provide humanity with biological ingredients for medical cures and treatments.

Landsborough was promised an off-leash dog park for both large and small dogs that was due for completion in July this year.

We are now approaching October and still no access to this park and no sign of any work in progress.

Living - Arts Spring Art Spectacular

The Blackall Range Visual Artists group has been busy creating works for its upcoming Spring Art Spectacular to be held at St Mary’s Hall Montville from Saturday, September 29 to Sunday, October 7.

This exciting collection of fine art works has been compiled from ‘commissions’ put forward by the Zonta Club of Blackall Range. Members of the club were invited to put forward names and contact details of themselves, family members, pets and their homes and gardens to provide inspiration for the works that will be showcased in the exhibition.

The Spring Art Spectacular will be open for public viewing daily from 9.30am4pm, and will also feature items of quality local art for sale. The Blackall Range is home to a vast talent of local artists and the Spring Art Spectacular is a lovely way to experience this talent first hand. St Mary's Hall fronts onto The Green at Montville, located at the top of the hill near Montville State School.

Raquel’s mysterious elements

Beerburrum artist Raquel Mason has been painting for many years and is self-taught. She loves to paint from inspirations in her life and is pleased to be holding her first solo exhibition at Vianta Arts at Beerwah.

The exhibition ‘Mysterious Elements’ will run from October 1-27 and will display Raquel's favourite mixed media art works.

She admires many mixed media artists and the different styles they use in their art works. Her favourite mediums are texture paste, collage, stencilling and acrylic paints.

Raquel also loves to collect special elements that she incorporates into all her art works.

She said that each of the art works had been created in a different style for an individual person to admire and encouraged the viewer to take their time to enjoy the wonderful hidden elements in each art work.

The official opening of the exhibition will be on Friday, October 5. If you would like to come along and enjoy a night out, make sure you book a table.

An ideal setting for a special occasion

By Sonia Clark When bride-to-be Amy Bennett (nee Ratcliffe) was looking around for a location to host her bridal shower recently, the gorgeous The Orangery Maleny proved to be the perfect venue.

Amy, formerly of Beerwah and now living on the coast, was joined by 40 of her nearest and dearest all wearing pink. They came together to enjoy a sumptuous high tea that included bubbles on arrival, a delicious assortment of sweet and savoury high tea items and an individually chosen pot of tea for each of the guests.

Amy said that one of the reasons she picked The Orangery Maleny was that she had previously held her birthday party there and had been “blown away” by the experience and the

incredible homemade treats.

With plenty of room to easily cater for both small and larger groups of up to 80 seated guests, Amy was able to book in her group and then relax knowing that business owner Heather Andrews and her team would meticulously take care of all the details that help make a celebration memorable.

“One of the aspects that I loved was that there is so much space, so you can easily enjoy your own private space with your loved ones, and Heather and the team are always so accommodating with making your event uniquely you - tailoring all elements to suit your guests,” Amy said.

Heather said the cakes, savouries and treats are lovingly made onsite at The Orangery Maleny,

“As we entered the bowls club and made our way to the back deck I just fell in love with the place,” she said.

“The beautiful backdrop of the gardens and the covered outdoor deck were absolutely beautiful and exactly where I wanted to celebrate our wedding day.

“The functions team showed us photos of previous weddings they had catered for and were happy to offer advice and suggestions.

“They were so accommodating with all of our wishes. We brought in most of our own decorations for the tables and when I showed the team photos of my ideas they were more than happy – actually very excited to put this all together for us on the day,” Krystle said.

The couple appreciated having the opportunity to sit down with the chef who helped design a menu to suit their budget, while offering plenty of options.

The couple decided to add an option for guests to play bowls before the wedding party arrived and the overwhelming response from the guests was that they all had so much fun.

Krystle said the only thing she was disappointed with was that she didn’t get a chance to head onto the bowling green in her wedding dress, and the fact that midnight came way too quickly.

“Music, drinks, fun and laughter were shared with our family and friends and we thank the venue staff for making our day one we will never forget,” Krystle said.

By Sonia Clark On a beautiful day in May, Felicity Grigor married her long-term beau and fellow hinterland local Jake Heading. The couple were married at Maleny Uniting Church - the same church where Felicity’s parents Ashley and Cassandra Grigor were married, and where Felicity was christened.

In a lovely acknowledgement to family tradition, Felicity and Jake were married on May 12, the same date as her parents’ wedding 28 years previously and her grandparents’ 28 years before that.

Felicity said that even though the couple’s grandparents were longstanding friends, and their grandmothers had shared a friendship since primary school, she and Jake only met for the first time six years ago while volunteering at the Maleny Show Ball.

The couple held their reception at the Witta Recreational Club and the event, which included a number of visitors from interstate and overseas, turned into a three-day celebration with guests either camping or staying locally.

“With so many people travelling from far away, including my best friend Dimity who flew in from the United States, holding the celebrations over three days let us all enjoy time together - which everyone really appreciated,” Felicity said.

A key element of the wedding was the importance the couple placed on using local products and services. Most elements for the wedding were locally sourced including beauty services, locations, jewellery, the groomsmen’s outfits, catering and wine. In true local community spirit, all the reception chairs and tables were supplied by the Maleny Show Society, linen was provided by the Quota Club ladies and the Apex Club helped manage the bar at the reception.

Jake and Felicity’s grandmothers made jars of homemade jam from their own fruit, which were handed out as bonbonniere items, and the table settings and bar were made with timber from the couple’s home.

Felicity wore ‘old’ lucky charms worn by her mum and grandmother, ‘borrowed’ a vintage inspired headpiece for her gorgeous photographs (taken at the iconic One Tree Hill) and wore a ‘blue’ diamond ring from her sister Kirsten.

The 140 guests came together to celebrate the wedding and in a special touch, Felicity sang and played a beautiful song on the guitar for her new husband, which she had been secretly practising for nearly a year.

“It was the most amazing day ever – it was all about the hospitality and supporting our locals. We hope it was as memorable for everyone as it was for us and people will remember it in the years to come,” Felicity said.

It was a muggy Malaita pre-dawn morning. I was able to catch ABC Brisbane Radio 612 on the AM band. Once the sun touches the morning horizon the overseas AM signal is overpowered.

But the 2,150-kilometre distance and two-hour time difference didn’t diminish the importance of what I was hearing. I was at the Atoifi Adventist Hospital as a relieving medico while the resident doctor for this remote 100-bed hospital was on leave.

In a separate house were three emergency specialists from Loma Linda in California, here to educate hospital staff on the latest procedures.

They needed to hear that planes had flown directly into the Twin Towers in New York and flights in their home country were grounded.

“I’m afraid the world has changed,” I said. It was the day the 9/11 attacks happened! George had a brother working two blocks from the Twin Towers. Was he safe? Off to the administration office to use the only communication, the hospital radio, to contact an office in Honiara,

the capital of the Solomon Islands, to have a call placed through to George’s mother - Atoifi radio to Honiara, phone to New York, phone to Honiara and back again by radio. His brother was safe!

All three were on standby for catastrophic national emergencies in the US. Within hours arrangements were made for a six-seater flight to Honiara and then a commercial jet to take them home.

And that left me alone. I was not to know then, but my wife at home in Australia had woken in the early hours of that September morning. Not sleeping she turned the radio on. Realising what was happening Marion tuned the TV and pressed ‘record’ on the VCR. When I arrived home two weeks later I could watch what I had missed.

Most adults remember where they were on that momentous day. We all have a story to tell.

When Jesus died on the cross His disciples would vividly remember and tell as many as they could the good news that He rose again and promised to come back again.

Tired of small talk, superficial chitchat and artificial infotainment?

A bold new pop-up event aims to get people together and get them talking – about the things that matter. While the idea might seem simple, it’s part of a global trend and it’s coming to Nambour in October.

Journalist and former therapist Yvette Nielsen conceived ‘An evening of deeper conversations’ in response to her own struggle to find her “tribe” after moving back to the Sunshine Coast a few years ago.

“I’d been battling depression and found it difficult to meet people,” Ms Nielsen said.

She said social media, rather than connecting her to others, actually contributed to her feelings of alienation. “When you’re focusing on happy snaps and memes, it’s easy to imagine everybody else is having a whale of a time and you’re the only one who feels empty and disconnected,” she said.

The innovative “social learning” event will gather people together for one evening at the Old Ambulance Station to discuss a series of thoughtprovoking questions about life, death and everything in between.

Ms Nielsen will facilitate the event and present tips for deeper listening between timed talk sessions.

National conservation leader to speak in Maleny Highly acclaimed conservation leader Keith Bradby will speak in Maleny on October 12 at the Maleny Community Centre from 7pm.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in October

• Watch out for leaf miner in your citrus trees.

Recent new growth is susceptible to this burrowing larva. Spray every two-three weeks with a pest spray or white oil to control the problem.

• Grape vines will be growing and bunches of grapes forming, so keep up the water to ensure plump juicy fruit. If birds are a problem, cover the whole vine with netting or the fruit bunches with individual pest exclusion bags. Green Harvest has a good range (greenharvest.com.au).

• Prune your poinsettias by two thirds to promote strong growth for next autumn.

• Plant seed or seedlings for Christmas lunch, especially colourful leafy lettuces like red mignonette, butter beans, golden button squash and cherry tomatoes.

• Vines – flowering or fruiting – will be growing quickly, so keep training them so they grow where you want them to (not the other way around).

• The warmer weather is perfect for planting tropical fruit trees, such as babaco, longan and tamarillo.

• Flowering kangaroo paws may need staking to support them if feeding birds are making them bend.

• Dig lots of compost and manure into the spot where you will be planting herbs and then watch the new seedlings go crazy.

Glasshouse orchid show a hit

The annual Glasshouse Country Orchid Show exploded in colour and perfume last Friday and Saturday.

The stunning displays at the Beerwah Community Hall came from orchid societies from as far away as Gympie, with the main display coming from our local Glasshouse Country group.

There were countless examples of spectacular orchid blooms, including some rare and exotic varieties.

Just as impressive this year was the photographic exhibition and competition - showcasing orchids, of course. The floral art using orchids was also so elegant and stylishly done.

Every year, Glasshouse Country & Maleny News sponsors the prizes for the native orchid categories, and this year there were some wonderfully dainty native species on show.

Congratulations must go to all the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society members who helped organise this year’s event. It truly was something special.

Wednesday, September 19: The ladies played in the Judi Coey Monthly Medal in an 18 hole single stroke event.

First place went to Seri Tytherleigh with 67 nett, runner up was Karen Heading with 68 nett and third place going to Christine Lemon with 71 nett.

Friday, September 21: The first chook-run summer time 12 hole game started at 3pm and all players were finished by sundown.

First place went to Ben Haycroft on a count-back from John Brownsworth and third place went to Brian Proctor.

Non-gold members of the club players are reminded that they are allowed three games without green fees. Gold members pay the $7 only for the chook run.

Saturday, September 22: The competition consisted of an 18 hole single stroke and putts event with first place going to Gary Wright with 54 nett, the runner up was Jack Day with 67 nett and third place went to Mike Hallam with 68 nett on a count-back from Doug Johnstone, Richard Owen and David Killeen, all with 68 nett.

The gross winner went to Jack Day with 70 nett.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Miles Allen A team of three bowlers went to Woodford to play in their monthly competition and had an enjoyable day.

If all the team members had been playing as well as Ray P they would have brought the prizes home, but they had to settle for winning one game and losing the other.

The Twilight Bowls Trophy was eagerly competed for on Wednesday night and there was a lot at stake.

Christine nearly created the upset of the season with some European-inspired bowling, Ian C pulled out his hair when Paul K’s form slumped, while Min held the team together when Lyn and Bryan got six points for the Tutors.

There was one bowl left in extra time and Ian had to put it next to the jack to win the competition - and he did. It just goes to prove it’s not over until the last bowl stops rolling.

The Outlaws got their name on the trophy and it was well deserved. Coach Neville worked with the Musketeers to get them into fourth place in the competition and he was awarded the coach of the season award.

Unfortunately the local derby between the Amigos and the Musketeers was not a close game. Dave C is now trying to have Neville transferred as coach for his team.

It was another beautiful Friday afternoon for Scroungers and the winners were Mick B, Ian C, Murray from NZ and Ray P. Congratulations to Mapleton Bowls Club whose men won the division three pennant, beating Buderim and Maroochydore in the final.

We are very happy to see the back and end walls of the club have been thoroughly cleaned and painted. Many thanks to the hard work of Dan, Gary D and Dave B as this has vastly improved the building.

There is plenty happening this week including a visiting group of 25 for a day of bowls and burgers.

Our monthly pairs competition will take place with our colleagues from Kilcoy, Woodford and Mapleton. Wednesday twilight bowls continues for everyone with a fun format (come at 6pm), and Scroungers on Friday starts at 2pm for all players, new and old.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Monday, September 17: Fruits of the Mountains fours day, where Glasshouse hosted seven visiting teams along with five home teams who competed for the day’s prizes. Lots of fun had by all. Jan Lawson, a long term and very active member who has held many positions on the ladies’ committee, was presented with a gift and flowers as a token of the club’s appreciation. Jan’s bowling knowledge and work with our club will be irreplaceable. First prize with highest score was Solander Lakes, runner up with second highest score was Bongaree and the lucky prize went to Woodford.

Well done to Chloe Runge, Jimmy Tatum, Everret Evans, Dean Shaw, Jack Chirgwin and Bill Tumbridge who all competed at the juniors/ seniors day at Pine Rivers on Sunday, with some extremely tough competition.

Entries for the open singles have closed and been drawn with a great turnout of players with 27 entries. Those playing round one at 9.30am and 11.30am need to find a marker for their game.

Next events after the carnival will be the mixed triples and fours which will be played on a Friday and Saturday evenings. Put your name up now if you are interested in playing the sevens and hinterland next January and February so we have an idea of numbers.

We will be running social bowls this Saturday, arrive 9.30am for a 10am start. All welcome.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Maree Hooley It was a slow start for Witta Wagtails in the first half, improved in the second half, but not enough to beat the Maroochydore Sapphires who were the winners on the day. It was also quite challenging at times with strong gusty winds, but a fun day of tennis was had by all, thanks to Gerry, Christine, Cynthia and Sonia.

The Whistlers played at Maroochydore against the Meteors and everyone struggled with the wind.

However, we had great games, very close at the half way, but we couldn't catch up. Score was 30-38 games, 3-5 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper.

The Witta Wildcats had a good win over the Maroochydore Fliers 5-3 sets, Special thanks to Trish and Sonia for helping us out and Annie for her strategy on the day.

School holiday fun at Witta Kids’ fun day – Tuesday, October 2 8am-1pm.
