Hi Everyone As I sit here on Monday morning thinking about what I will be wearing to our Melbourne Cup Lunch next Tuesday – I fleetingly wonder about how I will choose my horse this year.

I have to admit the focus of actual sporting events is generally lost on me, I did however watch some of the World Cup Final on Sunday – and as someone who mostly wears Black and White I was very happy that the All Blacks won.

And although I support the colour combination worn by the All Blacks, my absolute favourite part of the game is really watching the Haka before the game gets underway.

Based on my theory of liking the colour black - I thought that this year I really had the whole horse betting thing under control, that clearly the odds will be low but it would be a no-brainer .....I would

just back Black Caviar.

Unfortunately as I explained my theory to Brownie during the World Cup Final he very politely advised me that Black Caviar was a sprinter and that did not make it likely that she would be competing in the Melbourne Cup. So I have resorted to choosing by the feeling I get about the name, the last time a picked a winner was in 2002 with Media Puzzle – so this year I will be going for Glass Harmonium – sounds a little like Glasshouse so that is definitely as good a reason as any to pick.

For the second time in as many years, thieves have smashed the front window of local business Flair Jewellery, this time escaping with nearly $3,000 worth of watches.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Monday, October 17.

It’s believed two individuals used a wrench to smash open the front window of the Simpson Street business before escaping by car with approximately $2,900 worth of Jag and Maxim watches.

The wrench that was presumed to have been used to break the glass was found in a nearby garden.

Manager Riana Vonder said she was disappointed the business had been targeted again, following an attempted break-in late last year.

She said it appeared the thieves had been opportunistic, targeting the watches which were on display in the window, but avoiding the giftware alongside it.

She said they would be looking at increasing their security following the break-in.

Beerwah Police are investigating the incident.

The campaign to turn unused public land into much needed car parking at Landsborough railway station has stepped up a notch.

Last week, some of the members of the Landsborough Railway Parking committee, the action group behind the campaign, met on site to discuss the finer details of their planned submission to government.

The proposal would see the adjacent vacant land, which is owned by Queensland Rail, turned into car parking, with the provision to expand it into multi-tiered parking longer term to accommodate the region’s anticipated growth.

State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle, who is leading the campaign, said there were a number of benefits of using the adjacent land, including its flat terrain and close proximity to the station.

“We are still considering the best access to the proposed site, but it’s an obvious solution to the car park shortage,” Mr McArdle said.

Committee member Ken Leitch, the president of the Landsborough Area Community Association, said action was needed now.

“I’ve lived here for 20 years, and in the past five years the parking issue has been getting worse.

“The land we are proposing be developed for carparking is owned by Queensland Rail, and the three adjacent blocks are up for sale, which would provide an ideal solution,” Ken said.

Jason Coultis, representing Landsborough’s small businesses, said it would be good to see the railway benefit local business rather than hinder it.

He said although the introduction of timed parking in Cribb Street had helped alleviate the problem, the lack of parking definitely impacted on local business.

Mr McArdle said he had received a sympathetic hearing from the Ministers office, and although he couldn’t predict the outcome at this stage, he’d received the green light from the Shadow Minister Scott Emerson in terms of putting together a submission to the government, outlining all the pros and cons.

Smarter solar choices

Queenslanders are taking up solar power faster than any other state.

And with the new Glasshouse Country News office embracing a range of environmentally sustainable practices, we thought it was time we looked at the in’s and out’s of going solar ourselves.

As with any significant investment or purchase, it really does pay to do your research.

A fantastic resource for anyone looking at solar is the Consumer Guide to Buying Household Solar Panels, put out by the Clean Energy Council (http://www.cleanenergycouncil.org.au/cec/ resourcecentre/Consumer-Info/solarPV-guide) This 27 page document explains – in simple language – everything you need to know, including what questions you should ask of the installer and how to compare between different quotes.

So, to gain an appreciation of what to look for in a solar system suited to our situation, we asked Jay Stuurop, a Clean Energy Council Accredited installer from Astro Electric & Air (www.astrosolar.com.au), to give us some ideas on what we – and anyone else thinking of solar – should be looking for.

According to Jay, the first thing to do is take a look at your power bills and decide if you want to reduce your bill, eliminate your bill or generate money.

The size of the solar system you end up with will be determined by whether you want to reduce, eliminate or generate.

A general rule of thumb is that every kilowatt the solar system is rated will generate between $100.00 and $130.00 of electricity per quarter.

So for GCNews to eliminate our power bill, we’d need to look at something around the 4.5 kilowatt mark.

If we wanted to make money, we would need to generate more electricity than we use during the day.

We would be credited $0.44 per kilowatt hour (kWh) for surplus energy fed into the grid.

To work out the best positioning for the solar panels, Jay explained that there is a fair bit of science involved, and getting it wrong can make the difference between a system which functions perfectly and one which will struggle to perform and give you a decent return.

He also suggested that our brand choice for the solar panels and the inverter is really dependent on how much we want to pay and what we feel comfortable with.

As long as they are a reliable brand, they all basically do the same thing.

If you make sure that the warranties are the same (most well-known brands are pretty much the same regardless of price), the companies are established and that the warranties can be serviced within Australia, then the choice is based on price and personal preference.

We’ll need to make an application to Energex (called a Form 1003) to see if we are allowed to connect to the grid in our area. The installer

should be able to get this organised, as well as claiming the Renewable Energy Certificates (worth about $28.00 each at the moment).

At a rough estimate, our system may cost around $15,000. With electricity savings of about $2,400 a year, it’ll take almost six and a half years to recoup back the cost of the system. And if we make some small changes to our energy usage practices, we could reduce that pay-back period to around five years.

Not a bad return on the investment – and the property immediately goes up in value. A house which can generate its own electricity is much more desirable at sale time than one which can’t.

And at the same time, we’re reducing our carbon footprint, making less impact on the climate and environment locally and globally.

If you always thought orange wasn’t your colour then you need to speak to Louise Murray, 59, from Glass House Mountains. She’ll have you reaching for the orange overalls quicker than you can say SES. Louise moved to Glass House Mountains in 2009 and joined the State Emergency Service in early 2010.

“I’ve always believed in volunteering. Being new to the area it was a way I could satisfy: the volunteering, getting to know people, adventure, and learning new skills. But it’s more than those things… SES has been fantastic in that respect,” Louise said.

“Working in a supportive team is really nice, and learning alongside some of the most amazingly talented and experienced people that we have in this area such as Graeme Cheal. He’s the recipient of the Bravery Medal (BM), Emergency Services medal and the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award (the highest accolade given by Lions for community service). He recently stepped down as the group leader for Glass House after many decades,” she said.

Anyone over 18 can join the SES (some areas have cadet units for under 18) you don’t have to be qualified in any way; you don’t have to have any special skills. Once you join, training includes CPR and first aid training, abseiling and climbing, working safely at heights and much more.

Regular meetings are held twice a month except over the Christmas/holiday period and training is on specified weekends. Call outs for real incidents can happen anytime and can involve rescues, mountain rescues, land searches, flood and storm situations which require sandbagging or putting up tarpaulins on roofs and more.

Making volunteering easier in local communities A recent survey released by the action group Do Something! shows that only four out of 10 Australians have been involved in local community organisations within the past three months.

To combat this lack of community volunteering, Do Something! have launched a new web site called DoSomethingNearYou.com.au, the brainchild of Do Something Founder Jon Dee. “DoSomethingNearYou.com.au will make it simpler for people to find community groups in 576 different communities around Australia,” said Mr Dee. “All you have to do is type in your postcode and we’ll show you the different ways that you can be involved in your community.”

“DoSomethingNearYou gives people the address for every major charity store,” said Mr Dee. “It shows the local locations for every Salvos, Vinnies, Lifeline, Anglicare, Smith Family and Red Cross charity store. That will make it easier for people to donate goods and volunteer their time.”

Great teamwork, great results When a sport involves teamwork then you can expect the longer the team has been together, the better the chances that team will perform well.

That is certainly the case for Roxie Pitcher, 16, from Glass House Mountains, who with her mare Rains competed in the 2011 PCAQ Campdraft, formal gymkhana, sporting and mounted games championships last month.

Roxie won overall champion in her age group for the state formal gymkhana and overall champion for state sporting. Roxie has been riding Rains, a 13hh quarter pony cross, for eight years and she thinks this long partnership definitely gave her an advantage.

Although Roxie has competed at state level before, for the first time on October 1 she also competed at the Pony Club Australia 2011 national championships with the state mounted games team.

The most challenging thing in this event was the fact that different horses are used, but even so, Roxie’s team still managed an impressive fourth overall.

“It was great, a lot different because I was there just with my team, not family. And you are riding different horses, not your own,” Roxie said.

Luckily Roxie is used to riding different horses as Sports Ground every fortnight on a Saturday from part of her training, and has been a member of February to November. Generally riders need the Glasshouse Country Horse and Pony Club for their own horse; however there are ways for three years. people to participate even if they don’t. Beerwah State School Prep students enjoy their excursion In August the Beerwah State School Prep classes went on an excursion to Chambers Island to extend their knowledge of marine environments. This was a wonderful real life and hands on experience for the students. They went on a blindfold walk, a treasure hunt, they used binoculars on the bridge and observed and released fish which had been netted in the river.

Trading textbooks for technology A group of Year 8 students will trade textbooks for technology as Beerwah State High School launches its innovative iLearn program in 2012.

Already a huge hit with students and parents alike, the pilot will see 28 current Year 7 students start high-school armed with the latest digital learning tool. The school sees it as an opportunity to take teaching to a 21st century multi-media platform.

“We wanted to do something that really embraced the use of ICTs in the classroom and iPads are the best way to do it because they are so portable and user-friendly,” Beerwah High’s IT Head, Marni Bradley said.

“Plus, the students coming into Year 8 now have had this technology for the past few years, laptops to them are old hat.”

Other key drawcards include the fact the iPad is more lightweight than laptops and traditional textbooks can be loaded as e-books, minimising the amount of materials a student needs to carry to school each day and creating an allin-one learning tool. Taking notes, developing presentations, conducting research, creating movies, recording music and communicating with teachers and peers are all possibilities with iPad applications and because of their portability, students can easily move learning from the classroom to the oval, library or sport courts with iPad in hand.

The new iLearn students will use the parentfunded iPads in all subjects during Years 8, 9 and 10 and will own the device before proceeding to senior schooling. Parents will also be able to claim up to 50 per cent of the cost under the Education Tax Refund. It will see Beerwah State High School join dozens of other schools around Australia trialling iPads as a means of embedding technology in the classroom.

“It really is the way of the future,” Mrs Bradley said.

Local author Kate Wright launched her new book ‘Your Neighbours: The Gypsies in Australia’ at Beerwah Library recently. The book examines the history of the Romani, colloquially known as gypsies, since they first arrived with the First Fleet in 1788. The book is about real people and real events, and although it is a factual non-fiction book, it is written in a compelling storytelling style.

“The launch was fully booked and that was extremely interesting and the discussion afterwards was really stimulating,” Kate said.

She said the biggest misconception about gypsies is that people believe they are all thieves and rogues.

Kate, who achieved Honours at the University of Technology in Sydney, majoring in writing and philosophy of culture, is eager to keep the history

of Romani gypsies alive in Australia.

Other publications of hers include ‘The Gypsie Cookbook’, ‘The Gypsie Storyteller’ and ‘Cauldron Cookery’.

Throughout her life, storytelling in both the written and oral form has been Kate’s primary interest.

Supplying the appropriate fresh eucalypt leaves is always a challenge, requiring her to travel some distance where suitable young trees can be sourced.

For some time GMAN has been looking for an opportunity to assist by growing trees for this purpose in the local area. Les Nicholls of Sandy Creek Organic Farm very generously offered some of his property, and recently a small band of willing volunteers planted a range of native species, including E. teretecornis, the most suitable food for young koalas.

All trees were grown in the GMAN nursery and more will be planted as they become available.

CAR BOOT SALE Well the sun certainly shone brightly at our annual Carboot sale at Landsborough State School on Sunday.

There was definitely a strong sense of community as a bumper crowd turned out to enjoy strolling through the many different stalls and testing their skills out on all the fun games.

The free Jumping Castle and face painting was a big hit with the kids. The Lions did a great job of cooking the bbq, while it was great to cool down with an icecream and a slushie drink.

I would like to thank all the families and teachers who donated prizes and their precious time on the day. As this was such a successful day and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended, we will be looking at having more of these in the coming year.

Olympic hero new James’ Ambassador

On Friday, October 7, James’ Home Services turned 18-years-old. Now a national company, Robert James started the company washing cars at Caloundra. Robert and his wife Rhonda have lived at Mooloolah for nearly 12 years, and just love this end of town.

Risk too great from Malaysian pineapples THE risk from exotic pests was too great to allow imports of fresh pineapples from Malaysia, according to the LNP. LNP Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Food and Regional Queensland Andrew Cripps said he was particularly concerned of the risk to Queensland’s pineapple industry from a range of exotic borers that had the potential to decimate local crops.

“While the Federal government is proposing to allow the importation of de-crowned pineapples from Malaysia, there is confusion over what chemicals can be safely used to kill the potential pests that may come to our shores,” Mr Cripps said.

Mr Cripps said the advice issued last week from the Federal government (Biosecurity Australia) that fresh, de-crowned fruit be allowed into Australia, subject to being fumigated with methyl bromide, would not sit well with many Australians.

“Methyl bromide is not registered in Australia for use on pineapples and there is worldwide concern with its use and particularly for its link to destruction of the ozone layer.”

Mr Cripps said he was concerned that if importers were allowed to circumvent national chemical registration regulations by fumigating fruit off-shore – then Australia would be seen as two-faced.

“Its use has been scaled back here over serious environmental concerns – so surely we should not be condoning its use off-shore.”

Mr Cripps said the draft recommendations from Canberra would not please the Queensland industry and needed to be resisted at all costs.

Mr Powell said the range of exotic pests that could be introduced from fresh Malaysian pineapples included: Dysmicoccus grassii, Dysmicoccus neobrevipes (grey pineapple mealybug), Planococcus minor (Pacific mealybug) and Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi (Jack Beardsley mealybug).

“These are highly damaging pests that we don’t need here,” Mr Powell said.

“With some 80 per cent of Queensland’s fresh pineapples produced in the electorate of Glass House, that’s a risk I simply can’t support.”

“If these recommendations are supported and fresh pineapples are imported from Malaysia the consequences for local growers will be devastating,” Mr Powell said. www.gcnews.com.au

September 12 saw Joan Kropp and Coral Beutel at the Central Region meeting and summer school at the Pritchard Road Country Resort in Emerald. Coral spent Tuesday night in hospital with an infected leg.

Many resolutions were passed to go on to conference which started October 23 in Charters Towers. One of the strongest, bitter resolutions was about Coal seam gas. You had to hear what is going on from some of the ladies on the land to believe it. What is going to happen to our great artesian basin?

Our markets on September 24 were a great success with 14 stalls. We expect our Christmas markets on November 26 to be even bigger. Thanks to husbands Ivan, Gordon and Howard for their help, and also Jeff who helped run the canteen.

Our 66th birthday was celebrated at Pasta D’vine in Beerwah with Beerwah group joining us. The food and service were excellent.

Peachester members helped Peachester State School celebrate their centenary by cooking and helping where needed. Our branch was very proud to win the pro-rata for Nambour North Coast Division in cooking and knitting and crochet. Congratulations to Abbey Fagan, Nicholas Jennings and Sharnie Wilson whose work in the school children’s competition went to the state finals in Charters Towers. Good luck to you all!

We supported the Peachester State School with their application for funding for ‘The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundations Kitchen Garden Program’. This application has been accepted. Beerwah Writers Group At our recent meeting we welcomed new member Judy and membership is now approaching full capacity.

Final arrangements were made for the BWG display stand at the upcoming Sunshine Coast Authors Fair at Maroochydore on November 12.

A small number of ladies suggested publication of a book of children's stories. This led to lengthy discussion on content and format. Judy spoke about the revitalising of old writings. At our next meeting Julie will talk about illustrations and e-books; John will explain the preparation of a synopsis.

David and Jo have offered to host our end of year lunch on November 25.

Providing opportunities for writers to present their work and receive feedback, meetings take place at Beerwah Library on the second and fourth Friday of each month. Next meeting is on Friday, October 28.

Glasshouse Country View Club Contributed by Pauline Clarke, Publicity Officer What an inspirational speaker we had at our monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 19. Gary Roydhouse, born with polio, talked about his life experiences, including his rejection of the idea that wheelchairs were not made for stairs, which led to numerous accidents falling down stairs and breaking limbs. A chance meeting with a former legendary AFL player, who he ran into with his wheelchair, changed his life and provided the motivation for him to get out of his wheelchair and achieve his ambitions.

Despite his disability, his attitude of ‘you can do anything you want to in life’ has enabled him to conquer many feats including walking unassisted, running in races, climbing mountains and radio announcing despite a stutter.

Gary nowadays stands tall having made much of his life, including being the General Manager of Sunshine FM 104.9.

Calling for Council to be held accountable

My family and I are residents of Murphys Road, and it is my claim that successive councils over the last 30 years have failed miserably in their duty of care in regard to Beerburrum-Donnybrook Road.

It is my understanding that there is a 30 year history of complaints and safety concerns regarding this road and 30 years of excuses as to why they have never been effectively addressed by Council to date.

It beggars belief how a Government body can systemically ignore and discard the concerns of its constituents for some three decades without any accountability. How is it, in this day and age that a Council can get away with approving the construction of a major industry without any duty to providing the infrastructure to support the said industry?

Beerburrum-Donnybrook white metal road was in a poor state to start with, but tolerable due to the lack of heavy traffic, before the construction of a number of large poultry farms. Now, due to the constant use by heavy vehicles (B-Doubles and the like), the road is in a constant and dangerous state of disrepair. Murphys Road (or the one kilometre sealed section of Murphys Road that was quite reasonable) has now also disintegrated into a series of substantial potholes.

The power distribution for this area clearly was never properly evaluated as we have lost power on over a dozen occasions every year since the poultry farms were established. It can be clearly demonstrated that it can be attributed to the fans in some of the larger sheds simultaneously ‘coming on line’. In addition there are numerous other times when ‘brownouts’ have occurred.

My wife has rolled her car, and ended up with another through a fence, as a direct result of the appalling condition of Beerburrum Road.

It is constantly either full of huge potholes or covered in marble like stones. My family and I have endured near misses from trucks, other heavy vehicles, and other general traffic regularly driving on the wrong side of the road. I have even seen the local copper drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid a massive pothole. We have endured chipped and cracked windscreens, vehicular damage and personal injury as result of oncoming traffic.

I have referred the above matters to the Beerwah Police and the local member Andrew Powell MP, who to his credit did at least come out and pay us a visit to personally assess the situation. But alas, all have thrown their hands in the air and claim there is nothing they can do. It should be noted we were here before any chook farms were erected.

My question is at what point can the Council

be held accountable for anything they do or any decisions they make, and how does one actually bring them to account? All attempts to address this through proper channels has been met with misdirection, redirection, and innumerable levels of ‘that's not my department’?

Does anybody out there have some idea on how to deal with an obstinate Council?

There is a new hero in town, well he is my hero… Bart from Peachester Fuel Services. I don’t know what I would have done without him last Friday morning. In my mind he arrived at the Shell Service Station just in time… not in his ol’ white truck but riding in on a brilliant white horse. I don’t know how many of you have had this happen, but I had just refueled, sent my son into pay, I got back into the car and turned the ignition and then BANG! Smoke was coming from the bonnet, not a good place to be sitting beside a petrol pump. The girls from the shell were amazing and fast, handy with the fire extinguishers, and then my super hero Bart was there and took control. My battery had exploded literally!! I just wanted to say a huge thank you to Bart for your help, advice and support and to the two ladies on duty that morning. Everybody was so helpful, understanding and supportive. What could have been a disaster turned into a great story for my son to tell at school. Just when your faith in the human race starts to fade, you have an experience where strangers reach out and lend a hand, and it makes you appreciate that there are still some good hearted people left in this crazy world of ours. Thank you all so much.

Mooloolah Community Centre family fun day

Earlier this year, Council engaged an independent auditor to conduct a safety assessment of Commissioners Flat Road.

Acting on key recommendations of the review, Council has reviewed all signage on Commissioners Flat Road, and developed a plan to ensure all signs meet current standards.

These works will see some signs simply replaced with new signs, however many will be removed and installed so they are more strategically placed to improve driver safety.

A summary of the proposed changes are as follows; existing street signage will be upgraded with new name blades; school bus route signage to be installed; existing horse warning signs removed and better located; floodway warning signage upgraded; curve warning and speed advisory signs upgraded and better placed along the 2km length of winding road; crest warning signage toward Page Road improved; line marking upgraded, and yellow pavement markers (cat’s eyes) installed; the road to be re-sealed west of Reserve Lane.

Signage upgrade works will commence late October/November, with the line marking to follow, on the section of the road that is not being re-sealed.

I wish to congratulate the organisers and community on a wonderful day in Mooloolah on Sunday, October 16. Council gave away hundreds of tube stock native plants which complimented the Mooloolah Valley’s own Landcare Group. The stage performers; and in particular the students from Eudlo, Mooloolah and Glenview State Schools were amazing. A fantastic time was had by all, with a record amount of stall sites and displays… this is truly a worthwhile date claimed for the family calendar.

I would personally like to thank Council Officers Sheryl and Mark for the supply and handling of the native plants, your assistance is always greatly appreciated.

Coochin and Hussey Creek Council’s Waterways Operations Department will be trialling some signage in the Coochin and Hussey Creek areas. The area is designated esplanade and illegal camping has been occurring on the creek banks.

Littering, destruction of vegetation and other environmental damage will result in the closure of this area.

Carbon tax and effects on rural businesses Sunshine Coast Council recently ran a free workshop to enable stakeholders in rural business to hear about how the Federal Clean Energy future plan will or may affect their businesses here on the Coast. Unfortunately, this workshop was not well attended and I have approached Council on behalf of landholders seeking an opportunity for another workshop for rural businesses to attend. I attended this workshop and found it very informative and would encourage people engaged in rural activities to become aware of constraints and opportunities that may arise through the Federal Government’s Carbon Tax initiative.

The issue of speeding has been forwarded to the Landsborough Police and they have monitored and will continue to monitor offenders. Council provided the local police with the speed status by hour report after Council had the speed counters in Annie Street. The police have assured us they will act on that data. Other issues raised were about kerbing and channelling and this has been placed on the Future Capital Works register.

Arty Pants kids festival 2011 The Events Centre, Caloundra is delighted to announce the inaugural Arty Pants Kid’s Festival on Saturday, December 10, just in time for the school holidays. Mike Turner Beerwah High Chaplain For those who have not heard of Bear Grylls, he is the host of a TV show called ‘Man Vs Wild’, which is reportedly viewed by 1.2 billion people worldwide… massive. Formerly a British Special Forces soldier, Bear has also climbed Mt Everest and run expeditions all around the world.

Each week in the show Bear is dropped into formidable places around the world – Siberia, Mexico, Indonesia, Pacific Ocean, Sahara Desert to name a few, and he shows the viewer how to survive. He demonstrates how to keep safe, find food and water, build a shelter, navigate through different terrain and make your way back to civilisation.

The other night my family and I had the opportunity to go and see Bear Grylls at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. He was doing a live show which is currently touring the country.

It was an amazing evening with lots of awesome stories and inspiring tales that really appealed to my sons and me. The experience highlighted to me the importance of life being an adventure.

What a sad thing it is to see someone who is forever bored and uninspired. What a waste it is when people never think to explore the huge potential that lays waiting just beyond their view.

Strongman goes from strength to strength Beerburrum’s very own strongman Tim O’Shea has returned from his latest interstate competition, coming home with a third placing in the East Coast Classic Strongman/Highland Games event.

After qualifying for the Pro-Am event in July, Tim joined a field of seven strongmen in Wollongong for the final. The first five strongman events favoured Tim, with 11 reps on the 130kg Viking Press, and a good showing on the 114kg-170kg Atlas Stones putting Tim into third place after day one.

Athletes then took on six traditional Highland Games events at the Illawarra Scottish Fair, and despite being the least experienced Highland Games athlete in the field, Tim had a strong showing in events such as the 22lb stone put, the 150kg Husafell stone carry and the caber toss. His second place finish on day two was good enough for a third place finish overall.

Tim had a very successful 2011, placing third in the Australian Amateur Strongman Championships, second in Brisbane’s Strongest Man and now third in the East Coast Classic.

Vox Pops Hinterland residents share tips for good health

According to a recent survey conducted by Priceline, Channel Seven’s Sunrise and Women’s Health Magazine and Prevention Magazine, Queenslanders are in great shape, with 36 per cent reporting the highest self-rating of physical health and mental health. Only Victorians scored higher on the health scale, at 38 per cent. The survey covered topics such as fitness, weight, nutrition and stress. We asked local residents what their tips are for leading a healthy lifestyle.

B is for Bracteantha

Botanical names of plants are used to help avoid confusion created by several plants using the same common name, but occasionally the classification of a plant can lead to more confusion for the home gardener than common names.

A great example of this is a plant most of us know as the Paper or Everlasting Daisy.

The genus has had four names since it was first described in 1803 with many species drifting in and out of the club as studies intensified.

Starting as Helichrysum bracteatum, in 1991 it was reclassified as Bracteantha bracteata, a name under which it is still marketed today.

However, one year before that classification, Russian botanist Nikolai Tzvelev had assigned it the name Xerochrysum bracteatum which is currently the plant’s official botanic name.

Fortunately this confusion has no impact on the plants growth or popularity with cultivars receiving awards around the world.

The strawflower is a member of the Asteraceae or daisy family and can be found growing naturally in most regions of Australia except the tropics.

It is best known for the stunning flowers which retain their colour even when removed from the plant and dried. The flower head is surrounded by layers of stiff paper like bracts which are a modified leaf, not a petal.

It can be treated as either an annual or perennial depending on the region it is grown. Wet summers of the sub tropics often lead to rot at the base of the stem.

Strawflowers are versatile in the home garden.

They can be used in rockeries, cottage or bush gardens and annual garden beds.
