ast Friday morning I went along to the Community Awards ceremony held by the Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle.

This is the second year he has run his award program as a way of recognising the enormous efforts of locals in their roles in community organisations, as volunteers, or for their success on the sporting field, in business and their personal achievements.

It was great to see that quite a number of Glasshouse Country locals were finalists in a range of categories and four of the eight categories were taken out by residents from our side of the highway.

Fortunately I wasn’t involved in that unenviable task, however I would really like to congratulate all those nominated, the finalists and the winners, Sue Joseph from Daisy’s Place for Business Achiever of the year, Daniel Moodie and Tara Smithyman from Total Microsystems for Young Business Achievers of the year, James Cran of Mooloolah as Young Achiever of the year and Alan O’Callaghan, also from Mooloolah, for Volunteer of the Year.

Local produce steals the Show With Easter approaching, for our southern cousins, there’s excitement abounding, as the Sydney Royal Easter Show is on again from April 10 until April 23.

And for Col Dabelstein of Glass House Mountains, the Show means the culmination of a lot of hard work.

Col is the Manager for the South-East Queensland District Exhibit in the Agricultural Hall at the show, which is a main attraction for many of the show-goers.

Since the end of the Show last year (and for the past eight years), Col has been collecting, preparing, transporting and arranging agricultural products from across the vast South-East Queensland District, traversing from Bundaberg to Emerald, out to the border near Charleville and everywhere in between to the New South Wales border.

Locally, Col collects and features pineapples, custard apples, dragonfruit and forage oats. Now he has added another local crop – finger limes.

Col saw the story GCNews ran on Coonowrin Fingerlime farm at Glass House Mountains, and so now he’s including them in the exhibit.

“We try and capture the essence of all the local areas within the District, and so tropical fruits from the local area fit perfectly into the display,” said Col. As well as the display, all the produce is entered

“Our exhibit designer is fantastic. She has won eight of 11 exhibits she has designed. So this year we’re quietly confident.

All the produce used is donated, and everyone who works on making it happen – from collecting produce to transporting everything to Sydney to erecting the exhibit and staffing the stalls – is a volunteer.

“Without a core group of volunteers who help each year, we wouldn’t be able to showcase our region to the thousands upon thousands of people who visit the Royal Easter Show,” Col said.

“We’re always on the lookout for anyone who has produce we can use in the exhibits – especially locally grown tropical fruits.

“And if anyone has an interest and would like to help us out in getting it all together each year, it’s a great opportunity for anyone who is looking for something different and interesting to become involved in.”

Motor sports issue continues to rev locals State Government that a motor sports park will be built in the Beerwah State Forest at Glenview continues to polarise the community.

Below are some of the latest contributions made to GCNews by a local resident, a State Member

SCEC should retract statements: Mark McArdle

Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has criticised recent comments made by Sunshine Coast Environment Council’s Narelle McCarthy over the State’s proposed recreational rider park for Mooloolah, saying Ms McCarthy’s statements are ill-informed and without fact.

In the March 12 edition of Glasshouse Country News Ms McCarthy said SCEC was “concerned that a significant area of the Beerwah State Forest at Glenview may be given the go-ahead to be stripped of its protected status with no community consultation” and “State government appears to be pushing through yet another proposal under a veil of secrecy which will impact on important areas of the Sunshine Coast’s conservation and open space network.”

Mr McArdle said such claims were false and misleading.

“The State Government will be holding an open and transparent public consultation process, which we have already outlined,” Mr McArdle said.

“The relevant departments are currently in the process of preparing the relevant draft documentation and once prepared will be publicised in local media and accessible on the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing’s website in May. “This facility addresses the ongoing illegal riding in the region’s national parks and the State Government is strongly committed to protecting, preserving and managing our protected areas.

“We have received significant support from off-road motorbike enthusiasts and the wider community in relation to Minister Dickson’s announcement.”

Response to Mark McArdle, MP

A well-managed, off-road motorsports facility is not the issue for SCEC. It is a good idea in the wrong place.

Let’s look at why.

Contrary to claims by Mark McArdle MP and Minister Dickson, the native forest known as the Mooloolah logging area has high ecological values and is an important part of the region’s conservation network and amenity. The presence of these values is supported by the state’s own mapping and data. The 534ha site is also part of a valuable public asset due to go into National Park because of its conservation values.

The State Government’s handling of this project to date shows little regard for the community, its representatives or the environment. Instead of inviting views from the community, particularly given the use of public lands and funds, they earmarked this site then chose to ‘announce’ the proposal at the same time it opened a limited ‘Expression of Interest’.

Based on the pre-determined site and concept with little detail readily available to the general public, this avenue limits assessment and proper understanding of the proposal.

Not really. Unless the government is genuine about seeking input from the community and its council and is prepared to restart a more appropriate process on a transparent footing.

Reducing impacts on protected areas and offering suitable and safe areas for enthusiasts is recognised. However, the massive footprint and intensive activity proposed will destroy significant habitat for a range of listed species.

Koalas, glossy black cockatoos and the richmond birdwing butterfly are just a few. Critically endangered lowland rainforests, wetlands, creeks and old growth eucalypts are some of the remarkable natural values found here.

If the government persists with using the Beerwah State Forest despite necessary review, there are alternatives. An area immediately south of the Mooloolah logging area is a potential option with minimal environmental impact.

There is no excuse for sidelining the community, the environment or due process.

So much for public consultation

I’ve read with trepidation, the overwhelming attempt by obviously financially or embarrassed, interested parties, to sell the prospect of it seems, the already approved Motorsports Park.

So much for public consultation.

Do the flowery supporters honestly think that such a development will keep the illegal riders out of the local forests and National Parks?

I believe Mr Paul Donatiu (Executive Coordinator NPA) has got it spot on. The minute the two wheeled environmental vandals realise they’ll have to fork out a fee to use the Motorsports Park, they’ll avoid it in droves and return, as is their assumed right, to tearing along the footpaths to get to the forests! They’re untouchable and they know it.

And why is so much investment being poured into an attraction that has the real possibility of appealing to only 2% of the populace! AND if the comment that Steve Irwin Way has a huge importance as a tourism corridor, is genuine, why not spend this sort of money, on say, a train station opposite Australia Zoo and bring in the Brisbanites and their families, in something other than a car?

Not to mention the overseas visitors, who I’m sure with current airline baggage limits, can’t bring a trail bike into the country!

Or the completion of the bike path from Glass House to Beerwah so children don’t have to ride bikes to school along Steve Irwin Way. Years ago all my friends used to say I was dumb, but I’m better now. I can only hope that some of the contributors offering reasons to support this venture are getting better too.

40 years of dedication recognised

Don’t be a fool – change your smoke alarm battery

Joan Harvey has been recognised for her dedication to Beerwah Golf Club at the Golf Queensland Industry Awards night held on the Gold Coast last week.

Joan was awarded Club Super Volunteer of the Year for her service to both the club and more particularly, the juniors.

Joan joined the club in 1970 and by 1971, had begun volunteering on the Ladies Committee.

She first took on the role of secretary, which she held for eight years, then became vice captain for two years. Joan then stepped up to be captain for seven years from 1986. Joan also served time on the management committee as house director and vice president.

Whilst working for the club, Joan still had time to play some pretty mean golf. She won the C Grade Championship in 1976, 2004, 2005, and 2008.

Joan also won the B Grade Championship in 1997 and 1998, and along with her great golfing buddy, Val Shaw, won the Ladies Foursomes in 1987.

Joan also won the Mixed Foursomes in ’88, ‘90 and ’93; and the Beerwah Cup in ’93. To top all that off, Joan has also scored the holy grail of golf, a Hole in One. Even after 40 years, Joan is still actively involved in helping our club. She works on the seniors committee and has served as secretary, captain and currently holds the position of president.

Joan’s dedication was recognised in 2007 when

she was awarded Life Membership by the club.

The best illustration of Joan’s dedication to Beerwah Golf Club and its future can be seen in her most significant position, that of junior coordinator. Over the 30 odd years Joan has been in this position, she has taught many juniors not only the mechanics of the game, but the etiquette and honesty which go hand in hand with success in the game. Despite not being in the best of health recently, Joan is still always available for "her kids."

We are indebted to Joan for her tireless efforts over the years to make our club the best it can be and hope she continues to be an active member for many years to come.

Following a year where the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) attended 1,835 residential fires state wide, the QFES Jon Webb, Area Commander for Caloundra with Fire Fighter and Duracell Mark Smith are urging Queenslanders to prevent fires by changing their smoke alarms this April 1, as part of the annual ‘Don’t be a Fool’ campaign.

In 2013, a year characterised by catastrophic heat and extreme fire conditions, there were an average of 35 residential fires per week.

Of these house fires, 12 lives were tragically lost, a slight increase from the 11 lost in 2011.

QFES Inspector, David Sutch said, now more than ever, residents need to do their part and help the fire and emergency services ensure no more lives are lost.

“Ninety nine per cent of Australian households have a fitted smoke alarm, but frighteningly 700,000 Aussies admit they have not changed the batteries to it in the last year,” he said.

“We are calling for Queenslanders to get serious about fire safety by changing the batteries in their smoke alarms on April 1, and creating an escape plan for their families.”

Divine Divas' Variety Bash Locals are using it In August this year, the Divine Divas (Desley Cole, Marion Pearson and April Adsett) are entering an all ladies vehicle in the annual Variety Bash.

Both Desley and Marion work at the Maleny School; with Marion in the special education unit.

The Divas will be driving a 1970 F100 Ford ute through the outback to raise money for disadvantaged, sick children, and children with disabilities.

Around 200 cars will participate in this year’s event, leaving Brisbane on August 8, travelling through outback towns like St George and Bourke, arriving in Sydney on August 17.

To enter a vehicle, it must be more than 30 years old, and participants must pledge to raise a minimum of $8,000 as a donation to Variety Queensland.

Raising such a large amount of money is a daunting task, so the ladies are currently looking for sponsors to advertise spots on their vehicle – car 789.

Every donation will make a difference, and while the ladies have been involved with the charity since 2007 and have a lot of fun on the rally, one of the main advantages of the charity is that “you can see where the money goes - assisting dreams come true for Queensland kids,” they said.

Examples of Variety proceeds include interactive white boards for the special education unit and bikes for local disadvantaged children.

Back in February, GCNews brought readers the story about the challenges facing the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club and the important role the club plays in providing sporting fields for the 1,000 or so members of the affiliated clubs that call the grounds home.

Six weeks down the track, we thought we would touch base with the Club Manager, and see what the response has been like from locals.

It looks like the message of ‘use it or lose it’ has been getting through – maybe even a little too well. Unfortunately when we reminded people to head to the club and grab a meal on Thursday or Friday night, we didn’t think to say ring the club and book a table (on some nights the club will have 30 people booked in and do meals for 100).

Kylie said it is fantastic for the club that more people have come along and are supporting them. "However if we know what to expect, we can get our staffing and ordering spot on, and won’t disappoint the diners," she said.

"We have also had a number of offers of assistance from locals including a ‘netball dad’ who is a builder. He’s going to construct a glass walled ‘kid’s room’ in the dining area. This will give the kids some space of their own with arcade games and entertainment, and parents peace of mind.

They can see what the kids are up to, while they relax and enjoy a meal with the grownups," said Kylie.

Another member, Quinten Rawlins, organised a $400.00 self propelled mower as a raffle prize from JPM Machinery at Caboolture which is great for the club’s fundraising efforts.

They also have a young local DJ who is going to come in on a Friday night and provide some entertainment for the younger crowd in the bar area.

This week they also had their Keno Racing go live, which going by trends in the southern states will be popular with the punters, the idea behind it is a virtual horse racing experience.

And Kylie has plenty of other activities booked, including a Casino Night on May 24, a Bridal Expo, more bands and a comedy night – so keep an eye out for advertisements of upcoming events and remember - if the community don’t use it they could lose it!

Ultimatum on rail duplication

According to Queensland Treasurer Tim Nicholls the much awaited (and often promised) duplication of the rail line from Beerburrum to Nambour is off the cards any time soon, unless the government can sell state-owned assets to pay down debt.

Mr Powell has more recently reiterated this strong commitment, saying that he’ll … “do whatever I can to deliver this project before the estimated 2031 timeline.”

Mr Nicholls, on the Sunshine Coast recently to ‘have a conversation’ with a select group of Sunshine Coast business, community and government leaders made the comment when addressing the room on the state of Queensland's debt.

At the forum, he was quoted as saying … "We're losing the capacity to fund new infrastructure so, if for example, we wanted to talk about the Brisbane to Nambour rail upgrade, it'll be on the list but it's not going to get funded.

“Duplication of the rail line at Nambour is not going to happen for 25 years ... if we don't get a solution to this,” Mr Nicholls said.

This is just not acceptable, according to public transport advocate Jeff Addison. “It sounds a lot like political blackmail to me,” he said.

“This vital infrastructure has been promised by successive governments, but action is needed now – with or without asset sales.

“Locals shouldn’t be held to ransom with threats that the promised rail duplication won’t happen unless asset sales are agreed to,” exclaimed Jeff.

During the last State election, local member Andrew Powell made a strong commitment to getting the rail line duplication brought forward from the 2031 timeframe.

“The Treasurer is continuing to discuss how Queensland should pay down Labor’s $80 billion debt legacy, which will enable us to fund the roads, rail, schools and hospitals we will need in future; and I absolutely support him in that,” said Mr Powell.

But Mr Powell will have to toe-the-party-line now that the Treasurer has made the ultimatum.

“We are now faced with a number of choices when considering infrastructure that we want and need, such as the rail duplication, and as a Government we are looking at innovative ways to fund these projects such as the recent announcement by Minister Emerson regarding Australian Rail Track Corporation.

Community News Volunteers celebrated

Contributed by Anita Verwayen Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc celebrated St Patrick's Day on Monday, March 17 with a luncheon, to say a big thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers. In spite of the extremely hot day, 24 ‘vollies’ attended the lunch. Due to the varied positions in which people work, it was a great opportunity to meet other volunteers whom they may previously never have encountered in the centre. A superb lunch was provided by Kenny's Restaurant, Jones Kylie and Margaret Street Mooloolah Valley and it was a unanimous ‘thumbs up’ for the event by all who attended.

The Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc would also like to thank local businesses i.e. White's Irish O'Callaghan IGA, Mooloolah Pharmacy, Mooloolah Newsagency, Mooloolah Post Office, Mooloolah Computers and Thriftylink Hardware for their ongoing support of the Centre and its activities.

Don’t miss Peachester Art Show This weekend will feature the Peachester Art Show at Peachester community hall. This promises to be a wonderful showcase of original and eclectic artwork from both emerging and award winning local artists.

Featuring the work of over 25 artists throughout the weekend, the exhibition will provide access to a diverse mix of unique pieces utilising various mediums, including work from better known artists such as Scott Breton - recipient of the prestigious A.M.E. Bale Travelling Scholarship, Sally Fisher of Maleny, Paula Kerr, June McCotter and Kathryn Murray. Other featured artists include, Alissa Ratcliffe, Rhonda Pullen and Leigh Mcculloch.

As well as providing a visual feast, with artworks available to purchase, the show is the major fundraiser for the Peachester State Primary School P&C who are hoping to raise much needed funds towards upgrading the school playground and classroom air conditioning.

There will be an adult’s only opening night gala event to be held this Friday, March 28.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski will be officially opening the Peachester Art Show and

the wonderful Emma Creed will be MC. Featuring four hours of live music, instant prizes, drinks and finger food from 6.30pm, tickets for the opening event can be purchased for $15.00 from Peachester Fruit Market or by contacting the organisers.

The art show will continue over the weekend from Saturday, March 29 (10.00am – 4.00pm) to Sunday, March 30 (10.00am – 3.00pm) with a gold coin donation requested. That light, our sun, provides enough FREE ENERGY in one hour to meet the total energy (electricity) needs of the whole of planet earth for ONE YEAR. Perhaps our Hon. Prime Minister and Hon. Premier are not conscious of this fact, because neither one, nor their Governments appear to support solar.

The most ridiculous decision a Government in the SUNSHINE STATE could make is to cancel the previous ban on electric hot water services and now permit and encourage Queenslanders to forget the FREE ENERGY from the sun and install an ELECTRICAL hot water service.

Sure it sounds like a looney decision. But remember the Queensland Government statutory bodies own the COAL FIRED power generators, so this decision is to ensure that MORE polluting coal is burnt to keep Energex and the power houses in business.

Households to abandon the grid – CSIRO report Nearly 100 years ago, blacksmiths everywhere had thriving businesses shoeing all the horses and doing general engineering.

They no doubt scoffed at the new “horse-less carriage”. It was a novelty, it was dangerous, it was a fad that would fade away.

But the blacksmiths faded away and the “horse-less carriage” is still with us.

The CSIRO can see that solar will not fade

away, but the grid will fade away in its present form.

Probably the decision makers in Energex would rather not consider the current change to their falling power demand.

We believe it would be wise of them to learn to live with the changing times, and in particular redesign their business model so that they can take advantage of the new form of electricity generation (renewables), and plan to purchase this and distribute it

to the businesses and households who still choose to use distributed power.

The time is approaching when the coal fired polluting power stations will be abandoned.

For those critics, other countries are storing their day time collected energy in batteries and redistributing it in the night time. It is feasible, practical and is being done.

Energex could do it too.

The electricity missing link In 1989, we began our backyard business of generating and storing free electricity to rural 5 acre farmlets. The electricity was collected in the day time, partly used that day and the surplus stored in batteries, which provided the energy storage for the night time hours.

Three years ago we inspected 3 solar panel manufacturers in China (5 factories) and a battery manufacturer.

In the next few weeks, Ty is going back to China to re-inspect the same battery manufacturer.

This manufacturer is unequivocally the leading lithium-ion battery manufacturer in the world.

The batteries have a 16 year life, even if

you constantly (daily) use all their capacity and at the end of 16 years, their capacity has only been reduced by 20%. So expect about 20+ years of life.

We should have them in stock before May. They are designed for people with existing solar systems, and are styled as a ‘Plug and Play’ system – very little is involved in installation.

Once a household has this storage, they can then provide ALL of their daily energy needs for FREE. This is what the CSIRO has reported is going to happen. Naturally, the electricity grid will never be the same again.

Coochin Creek Bushland Group

Last Monday’s meeting resulted in an excellent effort by a small crew in removing a jungle of introduced grasses around our rock holes planted area.

You could almost hear the sigh of relief from our buried natives as the weeds were removed.

Remaining areas will be removed by a council contractor (Jeff Raynor and his team), who will also prepare our new wetland planting area in Emma Park and treat weeds in the existing natural wetland off Hickory Drive.

If the area is ready, April 11 will be our first planting for the new SEQ Catchments project (as seen in Glasshouse Country News, Edition March 5), which is receiving great support from GMAN based at Glass House Mountains.

Otherwise, weeding will continue elsewhere in the region.

Meeting place is our green sign located near the waterholes, enter from Hickory Drive.

Everyone is welcome to take part in this community project, which will return degraded wetland in Emma Park to a healthy state.

The group’s next meetings are on Monday, April 7 and Friday, April 11 (it is usually the 3rd Friday of the month, but have been moved to this date to avoid Easter).

Beerwah Lions Club

Contributed by Bob Banner At its March dinner meeting, the Beerwah Lions Club was pleased to welcome Jo Pratt from the Diabetic Health Clinic as guest speaker.

Jo, who is a fully qualified clinical nurse, spoke at length on diabetes, and the need for everyone, not just diabetics, to get back to basics on nutrition. A healthy diet consists largely of foods derived from plants, she said.

The Diabetic Health Clinic was formed by Jo and her husband Peter, after seeing a community need. Although the clinic is based in Glass House Mountains, its achievements are receiving recognition over a much wider area.

The meeting was chaired by first vice president Patricia Jutila.

Horseless Carriage Club

Contributed by Ken and Wendy Lonie Peachester local Eric Bourke and his XA Falcon are a welcome addition to the wide range of member’s cars in the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club.

This vehicle was bought off the original owner in 2000 and is immaculate inside and out including the original beige interior.

It has 58,000 miles on the speedo, is a 3 speed automatic, has a standard V8 351 cubic inch engine and is a pleasure to drive.

Our Clubhouse in the Priscilla Cottage precinct, Maleny, has been erected and is currently undergoing an internal fit-out. This has been achieved with mostly volunteer labour, members enthusiastically supporting the working bees over the last few months.

We are indebted to the members of the Priscilla Historical Club for making us feel welcome to share their precinct in what we hope will be an excellent arrangement far into the future.

Funds for the project have been raised by members with raffles, Christmas lunch, garage sales, cake stalls and also a welcome grant.

A kitchen has been installed and plans are underway to construct shelves for a dedicated library to house the Club’s vast collection of car related books.

The monthly meeting will now be held at our Clubhouse on the 3rd Friday of the month at 7.00pm.

Thirty members attended the Club’s social breakfast at Bressan Café of Flaxton, hosted by Thierry Clerc - all agreeing it was a perfect venue.

New members are always welcome - Club members and their vehicles are often involved in static displays and enjoy Club rallies, exploring our wonderful hinterland and ‘road testing’ many of our fine eateries.

Caloundra Family History Research Contributed by Roz Kuss We held one of our regular tutorials on Thursday, March 13, in the meeting room at the research facility at Corbould Park Racecourse, Pierce Avenue, Little Mountain. Valerie Thornton and Roz Kuss showed how to use the popular UK website FreeBMD and 24 members were there to take advantage of the on-screen demonstration.

These demonstrations, on a number of websites, are held often, for members to learn how to utilise the sites when doing their research.

The calendar on the group’s website at www. caloundrafamilyhistory.org.au will give dates and times for demonstrations.

The research facility and library, accessed through Gate 2 at the Corbould Park Racecourse, is open every Thursday and Saturday, with opening times, and a map, on the website.

School News Funky visitor to Beerwah

Contributed by Margaret Grambauer Students from Prep to Year 3 at Beerwah State School were excited when they participated in sessions by Chris Collin, ‘Funkybooks’ author.

The presentations by Chris were sponsored by the school to engage students with literature and to help improve reading and writing.

Chris inspired students to read by showing how a book can ‘come to life’ and how the story came about. Students read ‘Funky Chicken and A Bug Called Doug’, which is currently being released. They engaged with the puppets from the story and were able to identify and discuss the

characters. Students enjoyed participating in the ‘Funky Chicken’ song and dance.

School leaders take a tour Contributed by Katrina DeClara Beerburrum State School Principal, Mr Damien Pinches and Year 7 teacher Mr Jason Jenkinson recently took our school leaders to Brisbane for the annual National Young Leaders Day conference.

This is an annual event aimed at developing strong leadership values amongst young Australians. The conference proved to be an excellent opportunity for our leaders to hear from a number of inspirational speakers about their stories of what it means to be a leader.

The theme of the day was, ‘I am somebody’.

As the day unfolded the students quickly learnt that this theme addressed the key message that, no matter what your personal or social circumstances, everybody has the ability to be a great leader.

Some of the inspirational speakers included Australian Para Olympian Karni Liddell, Children’s Author Andy Griffiths and Australia Zoo Director Wes Mannion.

Although a long and tiring day after an early morning train ride into the city, all students gained valuable advice, encouragement and inspiration to lead themselves and others well.

This annual day provides a focus for all schools to say Bullying. No Way! It was a great opportunity to involve students in activities that promote a safe and supportive school environment.

Year 11 Hospitality students at Glasshouse Country Christian College have been running a cafe every Friday morning outside the Hospitality kitchen. They have all had a turn at taking orders, making milkshakes and being a runner from front to back-of-house.

One week the students did an Monique Newell ‘Oreo Milkshake’ and they had specialised in trouble keeping up with the making caramel supply. milkshakes The first couple of cafés were such a success that it gave GCCC’s Head of Hospitality, Julie Peters, an idea to share the benefits with others.

World’s greatest shave

Submitted by Beerwah SHS Student Council Beerwah State High School recently held its annual World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser event.

Hundreds of students gathered in the Performing Arts court yard to watch as several students and Mr Brace – our leadership coordinator - shaved their heads. As an added bonus this year Mr Bogatek also removed his six-month-old ‘Wolverine’ beard.

The main event, however, occurred when several very brave senior boys volunteered to have their legs waxed.

The event raised over $800.00 for the Leukaemia Foundation, which will help support people with blood cancer and their families. Special thanks must go to the School’s Student Council whose hard work resulted in the day being a resounding success.

Throughout the day, classes were visited by school chaplain, Linda Whysall, and adopt-a-cop, Susan Lowndes to discuss the effects of bullying and strategies to deal with bullying behaviour.

Students were given rubber arm bands saying ‘take a stand together bullying, no way!’ All students from Prep to Year 7 then came together at a special assembly where they took a pledge against bullying.

It was a day the children will remember and helped reinforce the existing everyday message that bullying is not okay at any time.

The end of March will see the end of an era in Mooloolah and simultaneously an exciting new era for Mooloolah Hair Studio.

Eleven years ago, Dee Stephens took on ownership of Mooloolah Hair Studio. Dee became the very proud new owner / operator and set about creating her ideal hair salon in the idyllic township that she had chosen as her new home.

In 2004, Kristy Griffith took on a hairdressing apprenticeship as Dee’s trainee. She worked through her apprenticeship and then stepped up to become the trades senior at Mooloolah Hair Studio.

Many locals were sad (but happy for her) when Kristy left to marry and start a family.

So now we’re happy to announce that Kristy is coming back as the new proud owner of Mooloolah Hair Studio and will again be working alongside the team of girls – Christine and Jacinta.

Kristy is really excited about her return to ‘The Studio’ and to the community which she loves and has grown up in.

At the end of an era comes elation for Dee at the prospect of long-term travelling, coupled with the sadness associated with parting from so many great friends and loyal customers.

“I want all of the great friends that I have made through the shop to know that I will miss them,” said a teary Dee. “I am so grateful to everyone for the years of support – and grateful for all the laughter, sharing and caring that has made the journey unreal and memorable.”

The Mooloolah IGA is a great example of how your local money spent in a local business circulates to give a hand to local groups. Last week, Ken Grant, Manager at Mooloolah IGA handed over a $900.00 cheque to the Mooloolah Soccer Club.

Simon Smith, President of Mooloolah Soccer, said that the money – which came from local shoppers via the IGA’s community chest – will be well spent by the sporting club.

“We’ll be using it to buy much-needed new goal posts and nets, which you can imagine are vital

for a soccer club,” he said.

“Mooloolah IGA has been a great supporter of our club and they supply us with food and materials for our clubhouse. They have also donated items such as fans and eskies to assist our club in making the Mooloolah Soccer Club experience one of the best on the Coast for local kids.

with the Superdads Time for a ‘Time Out’

A very happy 2014 to you all! Although three months have already slipped away without blinking, it’s not too late for one more New Year’s resolution, is it? C’mon, this one’s for your kids, so ride with me for a while and transport the idea a few pedals: you can do it!

I’m sure most of you are familiar with the behavioural ‘time out’ system, and probably have already used it with your children in some way. I want you to take this idea, shake it up, and add a little bit of lemon twist. Grab a few old paddle pop sticks and write the words ‘Time Out’ on them. Now give a couple of them (the amount is up to you – but don’t be shy) to each child and advise them they can use each stick once a week / month (your choice) to force you to have a time out. Now I’m not talking about when your anger is at 11!

When presented with a stick, you promise to take ‘time out’ of your very busy week to do something one on one with them for a few minutes, half an hour, or whatever you decide.

This is a great way to force yourself to step back and realise how important it is to spend time with your kids. If you’re like me (I know you are) you find yourself all too often saying things like, “I can’t right now. I’ve got to ……”

When you really think about it, many of our ‘got to’ tasks really aren’t that pressing or important. What will really happen if it doesn’t get done now?

So give the time out system a crack. Trust me; your children will love the power of being able to force you to abandon a task for 15 minutes. It’s like having their own genie bottle. 

Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Hooley It has been nearly six months since I became the Ambassador Coordinator for the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, managing the centres in Caloundra, Montville and here at Glass House.

In particular, I have watched the Glass House centre expand in both numbers and knowledge, and as the teams grow, it has been my pleasure to host barbecues and afternoon teas to get to know each ambassador/volunteer and say thank you for the effort and time they put in to keep our wonderful centre open.

The Glasshouse Information Centre has become a hub of 40 plus local volunteers available to staff the centre and pass on their incredible local knowledge to visitors and locals.

We have undertaken an intensive familiarisation program visiting local tourism operators to enable informed and personal experience to be offered.

Recently, we spent time at the Eco Lodge with Robyn showing us around the unique accommodation including the train carriages which provide a really lovely experience for those wanting something different. We have also visited Bankfoot House and were very lucky to have guided tour learning about the history of the place and the efforts towards getting this attraction open to the public.

Our team has also done a refresher of just how beautiful the local area is by visiting Ngungun, Tibrogargan and the lookout, a personal view is by far the best advert we can give to a visitor.

We are looking forward to expanding this familiarisation program to offer more opportunities to ambassadors/volunteers and local operators.

Currently in the centre, you can see a Segway display from a local operator.

If you have never seen one first hand, they are quite strange but a lot of fun, and surprisingly very easy to ride. We also have a display from a local artist with beautiful pictures of the mountains and local area and you can view mosaics too, all locally crafted. While we might now be in autumn, there definitely doesn’t seem any sign that the days are getting cooler, so I was pleased to see that the team from 7 Secrets at Glass House Mountains have introduced Iced Coffee and Chocolate, Frappes and Smoothies to their menu.

Generally when I duck in on a hot day – I spend my time checking if they have blood orange sorbet in their Gelati cabinet (yes this is my notso-secret addition) however, last week Courtney made me a skinny iced frappe. I have to say – wow! It tasted great and totally hit the spot, next time I think I might give the mango or berry smoothie a try.

While I was there I got chatting to Kaylene and Courtney and they very excitedly started talking about the renovations they have planned for the Pizzeria / Café.

Originally when the business opened the focus was on Pizza and Pasta, however since then they have made many changes, based on what their regular customers want.

So during the past year they have expanded their offerings during the day to include freshly made hot chips, along with delicious bakery items supplied by Buck's Bakery as well as a range of premade tasty rolls, panini’s and wraps.

The Buck’s Bakery products are proving so popular that they now also sell the bakery’s bread and will also do special pre-orders for customers, including rolls, cakes, bulk orders and catering requirements.

African Feast Dinner Party

The staff from the Beerwah Library would like to say thank you to the 'Becoming eSavvy Beerwah Technology expo' participants and supporters.

The free expo was held on March 15 and provided many opportunities for the community to become familiar with and learn more about emerging and new technologies. Special mention to the event partners Sunshine Coast U3A Grafx Group, Friends of Beerwah Library and 13 exhibitors who have made this event one to remember on the annual calendar and to councillor Baberowski for opening the Expo.

Local Mooloolah kids Isaac and Zoe, along with their mum Jessica, are hoping to raise $10,000 this year to set up a deep water bore for a disadvantaged school / orphanage in Uganda.

As part of the fundraising, the family will be holding monthly dinner parties featuring food from different regions of Africa. The next African Feast Dinner Party is on this Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29 from 6.00pm. It will feature South African dishes. Cost is $15.00 per person or $40.00 for a family, with all proceeds going to the cause. Cost includes a hearty meal accompanied by a traditional African nonalcoholic drink and desert, BYO. Hosted at a private residence, places are limited to 20 people.

Come along to ‘make a difference’ community event

Glasshouse Country Christian College showed Cr Rick Baberowski (centre back) their passion for technology

Local teenage brother and sister, James and Rachel Cran recently spent a month in Kenya working in a slum orphanage.

They want to share that experience and encourage others with the journey they have been on.

They would encourage parents to bring their children along to their ‘make a difference’ community event on Saturday, April 5 from 4.00pm - 6.00pm at the Mooloolah School Hall, in King Street.

This is a free family event, where you will be able to experience Kenyan food, dancing and culture, as well as hearing about life as a slum orphan.

You will also be encouraged to make a difference, and learn more about sponsoring a child. While the event is free they would encourage donations for continuing their fundraising.

I mentioned in my last column that the road entry upgrade at Skippy Park was about to get underway. The construction timing of the upgrade has been slightly revised and the work is now expected to be completed in late April.

When the construction work concludes, Simpson Street will become an even more pedestrian friendly environment for locals and visitors. We will be able to better enjoy the food outlets and move safely between the retail precincts and leafy landscaped areas. Part of the work to create a slower environment includes the recent installation of a flat top hump near Aldi and two raised pedestrian crossings. For the duration of construction the speed limit has been reduced to 40km and will still only be 50km when the project is complete. In the meantime, spread the word that Beerwah is a great place to shop locally and I encourage everyone to drive to the new conditions as we get used to new lane and parking configurations and a slower, friendlier pace along Simpson Street.

I was pleased to help support the Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc this month with the planting of 80 new trees and shrubs at the Mooloolah Recreation Grounds along with guards, stakes, mats and ties to keep them secure. Thanks also must go to the wonderful Japanese exchange students from Caloundra Christian College who assisted with the planting.

Following on from the highly successful free e-waste recycling events early last year, in August, council introduced a free ongoing service at its waste facilities. I’m excited to share that collectively council’s waste transfer stations saved 1000 tonnes from landfill in 2013 with every knob, wire and screen now on its way to becoming something new. But still many residents aren’t aware this remains freely available. So let’s stay ahead of the game – Australians are among the highest users of technology and e-waste is one of the fastest growing types of waste. Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of attending the Hinterland Art Studio ‘Sunday Drive’ Tour – a full day event showcasing and celebrating our local galleries and artisans and viewing some of our region’s most exciting new artworks. Experience a wildlife encounter

From writing and illustrating a mini drama about an endangered butterfly to learning hands-on ‘bush detective’ skills, there’s a variety of fun, creative and educational children’s workshops lined up these April school holidays at the Arts & Ecology Centre at Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden 33 Palm Creek Road, Tanawha.

Community Programs Portfolio holder and Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said she was incredibly impressed with the imaginative, interactive and artistic programs Sunshine Coast Council had planned for children at the Centre from April 8 to 16.

“The children’s workshops at the Arts & Ecology Centre have been developed to ensure children are entertained while the facilitators build their understanding of wildlife from both a practical and theoretical perspective,” Cr McKay said.

Workshops include; Bush Detectives with Geckoes Wildlife on Tuesday, April 8 (10.30am – 12.00noon, six+ years) and Creating Wildlife Habitat (1.00pm – 3.00pm, six+ years) where children can construct habitats made from recycled materials.

On Wednesday, April 9, Wildlife Art - cute, furry or scaly animals drawn using mixed media is on offer from (10.00am – 11.30am and 12.00noon – 1.30pm, six+ years).

Tuesday, April 15 has two sessions of weaving eco-nests from natural fibre, which once completed will contain a painted egg.

A hub for Peachester

Contributed by Pastor Margaret Niethe Last Christmas the community Uniting Church at Peachester held a community carol service which was a great success. Patrons on that occasion spoke of a desire to come together more often and on March 30 at 6.00pm an Ecumenical Service with supper to follow will take place. This is an exciting step to recreate a Peachester hub for this beautiful scenic spot. Each Tuesday a prayer service is held at 4.30pm and on May 6 a prayer service will be held.

The service is to focus on chaplaincy in the local area, and will be led by chaplain Mike Turner. I look forward to sharing more about future events as they come to fruition.

Ken Goodger Glasshouse Country Anglican Church In a major scientific discovery last week, physicists in the US say they have found direct evidence of the aftermath that came after the Big Bang explosion took place, some 13.7 billion years ago. While people interested in science may find this discovery great news, for most people, this may spark a small amount of interest, but we will go about our daily lives without giving it much further thought.

I find the ‘Big Bang Theory’ as it is known, to be fascinating. From a small amount of matter, so densely packed together that it was about the size of a cricket ball, the whole amazing universe that we inhabit a tiny part of, came into being.

To my mind this is a bit hard to comprehend.

And for many people, it is something they cannot believe happened, especially as the Bible account of creation suggests that everything started only a bit over 6,000 years ago. Using the chronology of the Kings James Bible, seventeenth-century Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, Archbishop James Ussher, worked out that the universe was created at 9.00am on Sunday, October, 23 in 4004 BC.

Personally, I’m OK with the idea that the universe is 13.7 billion years old, but I wonder how that small cricket-ball sized lump of matter got there, and how it got going. Chance?

Accident? God? Looking out at the night sky or down a beautiful valley, listening to a Mozart piano concerto or a child’s laugh, tasting a fresh cob of corn with butter dripping down my cheeks or a fine Pinot Grigio (hopefully not dripping down my cheeks), I firmly believe that it was a benevolent, generous God who started everything and who is still active in his creation.

There is still so much that science hasn’t found out about the universe, and probably won’t ever find out. So perhaps there is room in our modern, scientific minds to believe that there is something more to our universe and our lives than what we can comprehend in our little corner of space and time. God Bless.

Running wild at Wild Horse Mountain

Local running enthusiasts Brett Standring and Alun Davies just love running.

And they want to make sure that the fantastic experience of trail running – as opposed to track or road running – is easy for anyone to enjoy, no matter what their level of fitness or experience.

Brett, who also owns and operates Crookneck Retreat on Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains knows firsthand the joy of running through our local bushland.

“Alun and I have been running in trail events for quite a few years, and we know how wonderful it is,” Brett said.

“We both wanted to organise some local events so that people could see what a great place we live in – so we started Run Queensland.”

And they’ve been successfully staging local events now for over 12 months.

Next on their itinerary is the annual Wild Horse Criterium on Easter Sunday, April 20 at Wild Horse Mountain.

Brett says that the flat course circuit offers runs of 11km, 22km, 33km, 55km and 50 miles.

“This is the fifth time the event has been run and it has proven itself a fantastic event for introducing both road runners, seasoned trail runners, complete newbies and walkers to the local bush tracks and represents an unexpected challenge due to the variety of terrains,” he said.

“If you’re into parkruns, this is a perfect opportunity to try something different. And if you’re a recreational runner, you can be confident that there are lots of other runners – as well as course officials – on the tracks meaning that it is safe for families or those not so certain of their abilities.

“We’re encouraging local teams and fitness clubs to use it as a group training and bonding opportunity,” explained Brett.

But don’t think you need to be a marathon runner to join in.

“Walkers are well catered for – especially with the 11km circuit. And because it’s on the tracks in the forestry sections, you can bring along your dog for a walk or run, as long as it’s on a leash.

Registrations for the Wild Horse Criterium event are already flooding in from far and wide – including many from interstate – and Brett is hoping to have a field of about 300.

“Entrants receive a package of products and giveaways, and the Easter Bunny may make a visit too.

“There’ll also be food after the run and a coffee van on hand.

“We really want the event to be a safe family friendly social day,” Brett said.

Contributed by Jenny Kelly The dry spell continues so we had yet another great day for golf on Thursday. There was a bit of wind, but that served to keep the temperature down a bit. We had 67 ladies come out to play a Stroke event for trophies donated by the club.

Winner of Division 1 was Peggy Broomhall who came in with a 70 Nett. Peggy was followed by runner up Glenys Parry on 74 Nett. Lydia Costello took out Division 2 with 70 Nett while Fay Raven was runner up with 71 Nett. Nearest to the Pins went to Lea Doyle on 2, Glenys on 5 and Lyn Steele on the 16th. Div 1 first shot on the 18th was Denise Kirkby, Div 2 second shot was Janelle Balfe. The ball rundown went to 78 on a count back. Next week we play a Bisque Bogey, so that should be fun.
