n Friday afternoon I went along to the Shave for a Cure event at Maleny High, it was a really great opportunity for me to remind myself what life was like as a high school student.

It was great to see the enthusiasm of the teachers and a bunch of students who were brave and shaved and to also see the support the rest of the students showed, taking photos, cheering their mates on, and generally getting into the spirit of things.

The Interact Club (which is part of Rotary International for young people) had organised the day, I think maybe with a fair bit of support from one of the teachers Fran Tickle, and there was a sausage sizzle and drinks being sold as part of the fundraising. There was also live music from some of the music students and the ‘Environment Club’ making sure everyone’s cans were being recycled.

Actually I don’t think my school events were ever this cool! See story and photos on page 21.

Local News Social club helps schools Each year the Beerwah Hotel Social Club donates funds that they have raised to assist local community organisations.

This year they decided that their funds would go to assist the activities of Beerwah and Peachester State Schools and the Beerwah Community Kindy.

On Thursday night a presentation was held which saw each of the schools receive $1,000.00 and the Kindy receive $500.00.

Beerwah State School plan to spend their funds on audio visual equipment for the hall,

at Peachester State School the money will go towards air conditioning, and at the Kindy, it will be spent on resources for the children.

The funds were raised from the meat tray raffles they hold from 12.30pm - 1.30pm each Saturday afternoon.

Club President Garry Cavanagh thanked Barry Family Butchers for their on-going support and all those that regularly purchased the raffle tickets.

The next round of fundraising will see money raised going to both Landsborough and Glass House Mountains State Schools.

Although the immediate emergency situation has eased, the devastation in Vanuatu, as a result of Tropical Cyclone Pam, means that the people of our pacific neighbour will need our help to recover their lives.

With authorities reporting that entire communities have just been blown away, the problems facing the country as it rebuilds are almost beyond our comprehension. Many of our locals are looking towards what assistance and help they can provide.

To make it easier for people to help, a number of initiatives have been set up to collect materials and relief funds.

A group has established ‘Give to Vanuatu’, a Facebook page which collates information on what people can do to help and details drop-off points for goods people may wish to donate – including a couple on the Sunshine Coast.

They have plenty of linen and clothing and so are requesting items such as tarps, ropes, rice, canned and non-perishable foods, toiletries, building tools, screws and nails, school supplies, insect repellents (non-aerosol), cooking utensils, zip-ties, candles, hand sanitiser, tents and solar lighting.

All items must be clean and in good working order, and must be boxed (not bagged or loose) with the boxes labelled for ease of packing into containers and for customs.

The remaining drop-off point locally is at Murphy Builders QLD, 1/103 Brisbane Road, Mooloolaba (Monday - Friday 9.00am – 5.00pm).

Where to now … Andrew Powell It’s been two months since the elections, and GCM News has asked our two re-elected Members – Andrew Powell and Mark McArdle – to update our readers on their views and visions for the coming three year term. This week it’s Andrew … next week we’ll hear from Mark.

Although I have been given the honour of representing the wonderful Sunshine Coast Hinterland again, the recent election sent me a pretty clear message – it's not just a case of ‘doing’ but also ‘listening’. As such, whilst I go about continuing to deliver the outcomes you want, the community needs to know I am listening – my ears and eyes are open.

So I am pleased to announce the launch of my new ‘#Powell4GlassHouse’ campaign. You will see this slogan pop up on my Facebook page and on my website to show the things I am working on for the Glass House community. You can even use it to communicate with me anything in your patch that needs my attention.

We only need to reflect on the incredibly successful campaign run late last year calling for traffic lights at Reed Street. The feedback I was able to compile from you forced the Department of Main Roads to take notice and allocate the much needed funds for these improvements.

As an aside, I am pleased to say all is moving well on this project with preliminary designs now completed and installation still due to commence this year.

The Glass House electorate is made up of nearly

20 individual townships and I am always conscious of balancing the needs of each community, as what is important in one area, may not be a priority for another. Over the coming months I want to hear from you about what you want to see me fight for in your patch of Glass House.

Of course there are many things I am already aware of like the need to upgrade MalenyKenilworth Road and Steve Irwin Way, the future upgrade of the Maleny Pool and flashing school zone lights at Peachester. The area also needs to have a full range of accommodation facilities for the increasing tourist market so reopening the Glasshouse Mountains Holiday Park (owned by the State Government) is critical. And I know the Glasshouse Mountains State School is keen to get more air-conditioning for their classrooms. The list is certainly a work in progress so when you identify something you are passionate about let me know!

I have always had an open door approach to my role as the Member for Glass House but perhaps the strongest message out of the election results was that people wanted more. I understand that you want to know exactly what I am delivering and what I am working towards to achieve the best results for our community.

Liz Harris and Adam Budd, from Landsborough, became proud new ‘parents’ two weeks ago … of a fully electric car.

Listening to Liz and Adam talk about their new Nissan ‘Leaf’, you know that it has become a valued part of their family now; joining kids Zoey, Jesse and Eli. Although popular overseas – especially in USA, UK and the Scandinavian countries – purely electric cars haven’t really taken off in Australia yet, explained Liz. With there being only about 1,000 of these cars in Australia, it’s fair to say that Liz and Adam may be the only local family to own one, and it's only one of a handful on the Sunshine Coast.

“Australians have accepted hybrid cars (electric and petrol), but as yet don’t seem to be embracing the idea of an electricity-only powered car,” she said.

“I guess people think that the cars are ‘dinky’ or not practical.”

Which is far from the truth, according to Adam.

“Our Leaf is zippier, accelerates better, is more comfortable, has better bells-and-whistles and costs much less to run than the Hyundai i-30 it replaces,” he said.

“When Liz did the research, and we looked at how we used the second car, it was plainly obvious that having an electric car made much more economic sense.”

In fact, by Liz’s calculations, the car will only use about $1,000 in ‘fuel’ for the year.

And with a range of about 150km, you need to plan your trips carefully and recharge each night.

“Teaching at Woombye, it’s the perfect car for me to use for work and then pick up the kids from school,” Liz said.

“If we need to go on longer trips, we just take the petrol Mitsubishi. But we can get to Brisbane and back, and there are some fast-charge points in Brisbane where it only takes a half an hour to fully recharge if needed.”

With only a handful of fast-recharge sites currently across the south-east, plans are in place to have more of them available, including one possibly at Sippy Downs.

And with Nissan dropping the price of the ‘Leaf’ to about $40,000, Liz reckons it becomes a definite cost-effective choice.

“We have solar panels on the roof at home and generate more electricity than it takes to recharge the car overnight. So running the car is costneutral to us,” she said.

“But it’s not just the money-saving aspects that attracted me to the car.

“With dwindling oil resources, climate change issues and concerns about the future for our children, Adam and I made a conscious choice to reduce our ‘footprint’ and do our bit for a more sustainable lifestyle.

“The car is mostly made from recycled and 100% recyclable materials. Even many of the interior accessories are run from a separate 12 volt battery which is recharged from a small solar panel on the rear spoiler,” she said.

Some of the Australia Zoo camels are preparing for a very worthy fundraising event the ‘Glamel Trek’ for MontroseAccess raising funds to benefit local children with physical disabilities.

This is a three day glamping caravan event in May that will travel through the Sunshine Coast from Sunshine Beach and finish at Australia Zoo, stopping along the way on a food and wine trail. A media launch for the special event was held last week and guests on the day were also given the opportunity to sample camel milk which is said to be the new superfood.

The milk came from local company QCamel who also supply their milk for the cheese making at Maleny Cheeses.

Businesses and individuals still have the chance to participate by ‘buying’ a camel to ride in style and comfort from high on a hump.

Saddles are still available for the three-day trek for $6,000, one day for $2,500 or to be a camel-wrangler for the week for just $2,000.

Bee Gees Football Club President, Paul Hughes explained that over the last weekend, the Soccer Clubs of Sunshine Coast Football Federation held a fundraising day for the campaign to save the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club reaching out to nearly 5,500 players across the Sunshine Coast.

“Collection tins were set up at each of the canteens and bars, along with having people walking around the grounds with fundraising buckets at the 17 affiliated clubs.

"I'd like to say a massive thank you to the Sunshine Coast Football Federation for suggesting the idea, and to all the clubs for getting involved," said Paul.

Next week we will also see McDonalds at Glass House Mountains (out on the highway) putting their support behind the club by donating 15% of their sales from items purchased at the front counter on Thursday, March 26 between 5.00pm – 9.00pm.

The team at McDonald’s Glass House appreciates the ongoing support of the community and is proud to be in a position to give back.

Jen Lettres (nee Almond) one of the store’s managers, knows how important the sports club has been to her family and the whole community over the years. She approached management with this idea to support the club’s fundraising efforts.

So remember to make sure you put ‘buy dinner at McDonalds on Thursday night’ on your to-do list, and also keep in mind that you can always order from their healthy choices menu, or grab a coffee and cake from the McCafe. Glass House pays tribute to our WWI heroes As GCM News continues to commemorate the centenary of World War I, an Honour Roll which proudly displays in the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch features the names of 22 men from the Glass House area who bravely served our country.

According to Denis Hare editor of the Glasshouse Country RSL newsletter, The Pineapple Digger, most were farmers and labourers.

“They were salt of the earth folk and we should be very proud of their service," he said.

Four of those servicemen were killed in action and many returned with shell shock, now known as post traumatic stress disorder.

“Sadly three of the killed in action were from the same family, the Gilvear family, which altogether had seven family members serve. The Gilvear family is a remarkable story of service and sacrifice,” Denis said.

“Six brothers and their father, Thomas, then aged 43, all went off to war while his wife Christina and their four younger children, all under the age of 16, stayed home to maintain the farm.

“On hearing of the loss of his third son, Thomas requested a discharge so he could return home to work his farm. The three remaining sons, all wounded in action, returned at the end of the war.”

The Glass House Mountains township presented Christina with a brooch to commemorate the loss of her three sons, with the brooch still in the possession of a descendant of the family in the area. The thoughtfully crafted brooch featured the battalion colours of her sons who did not return home.

Sixteen servicemen returned to a homecoming fanfare at the School of Arts Hall, now known as the Community Hall, with hundreds from the Glass House Mountains and outlying districts attending to welcome home their local heroes and remember those fallen during the war.

“In the Glass House Mountains township an honour board, which featured 20 names, was established in the Community Hall on Coonowrin Road in 1918 when most of our men were at war,” Denis said.

“The RSL Sub Branch was formed in 1946 after World War II where the revised WW I honour board now displays and features 22 names. ANZAC Day services are still held in the Community Hall.”

While one name on the RSL honour board, W. Hare (no relation to Denis) remains a mystery for his inclusion, Denis says a possible reason for the addition of Hector Fullerton to the RSL Board is that it was not until after World War I that the work of the Merchant Navy was acknowledged as part of the war effort.

On their return from WW I, many soldiers struggled to settle back into ‘normal’ life.

Shoes for a cause

Do your shoes have a story to tell for charity?

Well that is the very reason for a fundraiser being hosted by the Maleny Queensland Country Women’s Association on April 30.

The CWA will host a high tea at The Verandah Room at the Maleny Community Centre to raise desperately needed funds for rural communities struggling in the aftermath of natural disasters and women’s services in the South Pacific.

Branch secretary Judy Brodie said the event would be held in conjunction with a fashion parade from the newly opened Maleny store Bloomhill Cancer Care Fashions.

“A highlight of the morning will be a display of shoes donated by ladies attending the morning tea. These can be people’s own shoes or those of others for the occasion,” Judy said.

“All shoes will be accompanied by a ‘story’, whether that be real or imaginative. I will be bringing shoes from when I was 18 months old and a photo of that time as my story to present.”

This shoe theme ties into the fundraising efforts of Women Walk the World, an international annual initiative where women’s groups in many countries organise walks in their communities along local tracks and trails, to raise funds for the Associated Country Women of the World.

Maleny’s Imelda’s Shoe Shop will donate three vouchers as the lucky door, raffle and prize, for the best shoe story.

“Voting for the best pair of shoes will be by monetary donation, the proceeds of which will go to Women Walk the World fund which is an initiative of country women world-wide,” Judy said.

“Most of Australia’s CWA funds go to help women in the South Pacific Islands to assist them with health, and education aids and facilities.”

Proceeds from the entrance and raffle on the day will benefit CWA’s 2015 State External Appeal towards Blaze Aid, a volunteer-based organisation that works with people in rural Australia to assist in rebuilding communities destroyed by natural disasters. Congratulations to Barbara Brickland, winner of our recent 100 club draw to support Blaze Aid. Thanks to all who are supporting this appeal to help volunteers rebuild fences and lives after fire and flood damage.

Contributed by Judith Mason We had a morning of coffee and cake at ‘The Garden’, (formally Le Jardin) on Mountain View Road, Maleny, on Wednesday, March 4 which 22 ladies enjoyed. The weather was perfect, the ambience great, and there was much chatter. Fran was the lucky raffle winner of a fruit basket, Clair and Gillian won second and third prizes.

A busy week for some, as seven ladies attended a High Tea on Saturday, March 7 at the Pullman-Mercure, Brisbane to celebrate International Woman’s Day 2015.

The VIEW club National President, Robin Perros gave her address and then introduced us to Marie Rose, a tertiary student from the Smith Family Learning for Life Program. She was a very able speaker recounting her flight from Rwanda and the kindness of some people along the way.

After the lovely High Tea there were five more inspirational speakers all touching on the need for more equality for woman and more resources to tackle Domestic Violence.

On Wednesday, April 1 our outing will be to the cinema at Caboolture.

Excavated archaeological ceramics Contributed by Roz Kuss Dr Jon Prangnell, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the School of Social Science & Faculty of Humanities, UQ, recently spoke to the Caloundra Family History Research Group.

He brought artifacts relating to his presentation on ‘Archaeological Ceramics Excavated in SEQ’ for a ‘hands on’ experience for the group’s members and visitors.

Some of these ceramics came from excavations of the 1824 settlement at Redcliffe. Others were from the excavations of the rubbish dump at the home of Katharine and Henry Plantagenet Somerset, a politician. Both Somerset Dam and the local government region of Somerset were named in his honour.

Some also came from land excavated at the river side of Dutton Park Cemetery for the supports of the Eleanor Schonell Bridge over the Brisbane River to UQ at St Lucia.

Black Dog Ride from Aussie World

Andrew Prescott of Peachester was just one of over 200 motorbike riders who headed to Aussie World last Sunday morning to meet up for the start of the first Black Dog Ride on the Sunshine Coast.

The event organisers are planning to make the one day ride through the Hinterland as a group annual event at this location to raise funds and awareness for depression and suicide prevention.

Andrew said this was just one leg of a number of legs being ridden on the same day all around mainland Australia.

Over 7,000 riders and pillions left from about 35 different locations around Australia and Tasmania.

“A large number of the bikes will have a ‘Winston’ on them. Winston is a stuffed Black Dog and is the mascot of the organisation,” Andrew said.

The mascot was named after Winston Churchill who suffered from depression and called it his ‘black dog’.

The organisation has been running for just over five years and started with one man riding around Australia in 2009.

Since then it has raised over $1.7 million dollars for mental health services in Australia.

In August this year, Andrew plans to join in on another annual Black Dog Ride that will take riders to the Red Centre and this year will be going to Ayres Rock for the first time.

RE: NBN on Howell’s Knob

The time is now 12.20pm on March 17, 2015. I’m just back from Howell’s Knob where Aurecon is pegging out a site for an NBN microwave tower.

Where else are they pegging out sites in readiness for the next NBN meeting in mid - April? It is now coming to the time when NBN and the government have to be told that we are demanding a towerless NBN for the Maleny Hinterlands. Howell’s Knob is the centre point of tourist overview of the rural scenery after looking from Mountain View Road.

It is certainly not a place to even contemplate a Microwave Tower.

The Christmas lights proved to be a big hit with the community and visitors to the town. Feedback has been excellent.

As for dumping rubbish in the bush, I wonder why there isn’t a lot more, considering the price to dump at the Sunshine Coast Council dumps is ridiculous. I come from Morten Bay Regional Council where it is free to dump. Why does the council charge so much?

If prices were kept reasonable there wouldn’t be any illegal dumping. I don’t use the Sunshine Coast Council tips at all, because I can’t afford the fees.

And no, I don’t dump illegally ether, because I have respect for the area where I live. Come on council get your act together.

Watercolours and oils illustrate the WW1 battlefields of Northern France, while artworks on loan from the Dalai Lama’s Art School in Dharamsala offer messages of peace. I enjoyed catching up with local residents at the Mooloolah Breakfast at Kenny’s@Mooloolah earlier this month.

A key topic raised was concerns for the young people in Mooloolah in terms of transport and the need for more facilities such as basketball / netball hoops, handball wall, skate-park and cricket nets. I intend to connect with the youth in the coming months to hear their priorities for recreational opportunities in Mooloolah. The Mooloolah Country Club sportsground is a distance from the Mooloolah CBD and residents have expressed concerns about allowing their youth to ride to those facilities. If you wish to be kept informed about local projects and council-related matters, the next breakfast is on April 2 – see you at 7.00am for a 7.30am start.

Maleny Community Precinct

Locals and visitors will be pleased to hear all is progressing well with the Maleny Community Precinct project. In 2015, the main work to do is centred around the walkways. The beautiful timber boardwalk is now complete connecting the main street of Maleny with the Precinct following Obi Creek.

The remaining task is to construct the extension across two residential areas to connect with a second boardwalk, also a circuitous walkway called Reynolds Circuit Boardwalk. These walkways will connect the trails and pathways to the township and all access points to the Precinct. Works are also on schedule to have new toilet facilities on Porters Lane up and running by the end of May (weather permitting).

Pests beware!

There’s nowhere to hide as council weeds out the troublemakers. But don’t be alarmed; council officers will be carrying out the Pest Survey Program until June 30 to help prevent damage to the environment, domestic animals and community amenity. They’ll also be helping locals in Kenilworth, Obi Obi, Gheerulla, Cooloolabin, Belli Park, Kureelpa and Beerburrum areas with property inspections to reduce pest and weed damage to local biodiversity, stock, domestic animals and agricultural productivity.

Our Networking Breakfast on March 10 was an energising way to start the day, with a presentation by Energex representatives Steve Fairless ad Steve Lynch. They gave us insight into the Maleny and surrounds electricity network, its performance over time, performance improvement initiatives, performance improvement projects in the last five years, maintenance programs and future outlook.

Supply and maintenance of electricity is of course a hot topic for the Maleny and surrounding business community as length of time of electricity outages over recent years appears to have increased. This has required many businesses to provide their own power generation backup or suffer stock losses.

A good constructive dialogue was had and feedback provided by our local businesses including our local alternative energy sector. Thank you to Energex for making time for this discussion, and also our local MP Andrew Powell and Cr Jenny McKay, for attending. Thanks Lynn and happy travels

Brigette Boon, Lynn Little, Angela Carey, Kelly Wall and Julie Pickering After starting to work in pharmacies at only 13, Lynn Little has been working for 52 years. She reckons it is time to say goodbye to all her work mates, customers and friends at the Beerwah’s Amcal Chemist, her last work day being March 25.

Lynn who has lived locally for the past 28 years has been working at Beerwah for the past eight years as the front shop manager.

Lynn says the best things about her time at the Beerwah pharmacy have been the relationships she has built up with the customers.

“Customer service has always been top of my list,” says Lynn, “and of course being surrounded by a great team of staff has really helped.”

She has had presents galore dropped in, wine, various gifts, lunch dates with long-time customers who are now friends, Lynn has really enjoyed taking the time to say goodbye.

Lynn and her husband are retiring together – he has worked at Woodlands as a mechanic for 17 years and they plan to hit the road in their new 4 x 4 and caravan and spend the next four to five months travelling before coming home to Beerwah for Christmas.

With this research in mind, Kaz and the team at Soulqi look at effective ways to combine eastern and western strategies to address ADHD symptoms. They begin by offering an in-depth assessment of your child to help determine if sleep problems are indeed an issue. ADHD is addressed from the perspective of root and manifestation, where all the signs and symptoms along with the main complaints of the child are looked at. Imbalances in the liver and heart systems are commonly associated with the ADHD diagnosis, so it’s not surprising that sleep imbalances are presented in these instances.

Lifestyle factors are then addressed, with a wind-down time at least an hour before bedtime recommended. Diet is also critical, as processed foods, sugar and caffeine can all interfere with sleep quality.

By using an in-depth understanding of eastern and western medical theories, Kaz and Rob will apply a treatment program of acupuncture as well as a prescription of herbal medicine. The clinic also uses Metagenics products. Clinical studies have suggested a very high rate of effectiveness in treatment so why not make an appointment with Kaz and the team today.

Choose your own adventure with either intergalactic space travel or magic and mayhem at Beerwah and Maleny libraries these school holidays. Get the kids excited with a number of cool free workshops on offer based around the theme of Wizards vs. Darklords.

On Wednesday, April 8, Maleny library will be holding a ‘rockets and star wars masks’ pop in activity for all ages from 9.30am. Beerwah library will hold a Lego building workshop ‘Bricks 4 Kids’ (ages seven+) on the same morning from 10.00am - 11.00am, though bookings are required.

On Friday, April 10 head over to Maleny Library at 11.00am for the ‘Storm Troopers and Light Sabres’ activity where you can create your own minecraft storm trooper head and light sabre (ages seven +).

Beerwah library will be holding a ‘star wars mask and paper engineering’ workshop from 2.00pm – 3.00pm on Friday, April 10, suitable for ages five to eight.

On Tuesday, April 14 from 9.30am - 11.00am there is a special off site ‘activate film making’ workshop (ages six - 12) to be held at the Maleny Community Centre Hall (23 Maple Street). Join the Maleny library staff to create your own cool short film featuring wizards, dragons and maybe even a flaming fireball or two!

Beerwah minecraft fans will be happy to have the ‘Storm Troopers and Light Sabres’ activity for ages seven+ at Beerwah library on Tuesday, April 14 from 2.00pm - 3.00pm. Then get your magic on with a wand making workshop on Tuesday, April 14 at Maleny library (ages nine+) from 2.00pm - 3.00pm and Thursday, April 16 at Beerwah library (ages nine+) from 2.00pm - 3.00pm.

For Harry Potter fans, Beerwah Library will have a Harry Potter e-Scavenger hunt (ages eight + with android device supplied) on Friday, April 17 at 2.00pm.

On Sunday, March 22, students from the Matt Fiddes (MF) Hinterland Martial Arts Schools came together for their first grading of the year.

From the little three-year-olds through to adults approaching their 60s, every student had a goal they were aiming for. Some, to simply pass their white belt grading, others striving towards their black belts.

While gradings are designed to test students on their fitness, self-defense, and sparring techniques, the Matt Fiddes instructors look for even more. Every term, students learn different life skills such as self-control and anger management. This term, the topic was on stranger danger, dealing with the ‘no, go, yell and tell’ rules on how to escape if a stranger approached you. Every student has had lots of fun demonstrating all the techniques they have learned over the past 12 weeks.

Gradings are a very special part of the MF

academy. It is not only a time where everyone comes together as one big supportive family, but a place where students show off their indomitable spirit and dedication to training as they strive to accomplish personal goals.

One particular goal that all students aim for is to be nominated for a position on the Leadership or Super Winning Attitude Team (SWAT). Our Leadership team is a reward that goes to the students who show massive improvement in their courage, integrity and most importantly indomitable spirit. SWAT is a stepping stone for younger students who show potential in becoming future leaders.

Over a long period of time students need to consistently show ‘Black Belt Attitude’ in the dojo, at school and at home to earn a nomination for SWAT or Leadership. Each grading term positions on these teams are reassessed and they must be re-nominated to keep their place.

By Superdads drummer – Peter Spencer Have you ever wondered if play is actually important? Most dads today grew up hearing reprimands like “It’s time you grew up and stop playing silly games!” In some ways this may be necessary, but I wonder if by abandoning play we’re losing something very important both to ourselves and our families.

The term ‘play’ doesn’t have to mean something meaningless or silly. Let’s face it, we play all throughout our lives and our play changes as we grow.

I’ve watched my kids through the years go from playing ‘pretend’ to ball skills to just ‘chilling with friends’. It’s all play, and we worn-out grownups have our own way of playing. Personally I like to sit back with friends and chat about latest events, world news and future possibilities. I see this as suitable play for someone whose back is too worn out to chase footballs.

The thing about play, whether it be chasing footballs or scraping the edges of the philosophical universe, is that it always works best when you share it with others. It may be difficult for boring old, worn-out dads like me to get involved with my 11-year-old daughter’s games, but she really loves it when I make an attempt, regardless of how brief that may be.

On the other side of things, my daughter has been showing some interest in world events lately and wants to sit in on the conversations I have with my friends. Again, this may be a brief event, as more exciting games are taking place in other parts of the house. But that time of sharing grows as she gets older. So I suggest that rather than making our kids think it’s time to stop having fun and get serious, we should involve our kids in more ‘serious’ play. That way we share the fun and stay close to our kids. It’s a win-win situation. Enjoy.

Well, we have had a wonderful start to our new year – with new mums and children, new babies and some new babies expected within the next few weeks or so.

Now this first term is nearly done, and on April 1 we will be celebrating Easter in the Greek Tradition. It is an exciting time experiencing Easter in a different way.

In our imaginations we will be boarding a plane to fly to Greece where we will learn all about this way of celebrating Christs’ gift of salvation.

The following two and a half weeks will be holidays for all of us, until March 22 when we will all be back and ready for a whole new term.

Keep your kids active

During the Easter School Holidays the NgunNgun Triathlon Club will be running an Aquathlon training session on Wednesday, April 8 and then the following Wednesday, April 15 they will be running an Aquathlon at the Mooloolah Pool.

After attending the Aquathlon specific training session, participants can compete in the Aquathlon run by Ngungun Triathlon Club junior coaches.

Categories are ages five to eight that complete in a 400m run, 50m swim, and 400m run from 9.00am – 9.45 am.

Then there will be a nine to 12 year’s category with includes a 800m run, 100m swim, and a 800m run from 10.00am – 11.00am. The events cost $10.00 per session.

Say no to bullying

The message was clear and it echoed throughout Landsborough State School on Wednesday, March 18. It was a message endorsed by staff, students and parents who arrived at school dressed in the colour orange to highlight the anti bullying message and to promote the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.

The day provided a focus for students to say ‘Bullying. No Way!’ and to strengthen their existing everyday messages against bullying and violence.

Pacific Lutheran students and families participated in the TravelSmart Ride2School Day, which is part of a national event that celebrates active ways to get to school.

Parents and students were encouraged to get active and ditch the car to ride, walk, scoot or skate to school instead.

Head of Staff and Students for Prep to Year 5, Mr David Druery, said it was great to see the community getting involved in this initiative.

“Walking or riding to school not only improves the health of our community but also the natural environment too,” he said.

Parents and students commented that walking or riding to school together was a fun way to start the day.

The last week has seen lots of locals go under the clippers or embraced a new ‘Crazy Hair’ look for the day in an effort to raise funds and awareness for blood cancers, including the kids at Peachester and Landsborough State Schools, as well as students and staff at Maleny High.

McDonalds at Glass House Mountains saw three of their team participate and a public shave also happened at Club Glasshouse.

McDonalds crew members Izzie Rice, Lachlon Thompson and Dennae Treloar were brave and shaved, together they raised $700.00.

Shave for a Peachester lets their hair down

Contributed by Andrea Balcombe P&C Last week Peachester State Primary School went crazy for Crazy Hair Day and raised $169.00 for a cure for Blood Cancers.

The children were extremely excited and planned some crazy styles for the day. The morning began with an impromptu parade to ensure the children understood what blood cancer was and the gravity of having such an illness. The kids, parents and teachers of Peachester love supporting worthy causes in creative fun ways. Everyone always goes to a huge effort and 100% participation is evidence of their enthusiasm.

Maleny High was alive to the sound of hair clippers last Friday, when four local hairdressers came along to the school and did the honours of removing the flowing locks of the school’s very brave ‘Shave for a Cure’ team.

The 14 member team known as the ‘Maleny High Mad Hatters’ included three daring staff members and 11 brave students.

The students who put their commitment before their appearance were Heath Grogan, Tristan Lashmar, Matilda Storey, Luke Gilliland, Chelsea Laws, Sholto Muir, Conor Biggs, Ryan Webb, Xanthe Dendle, Patrick Davis and Caelen Dwyer.

The staff – referred to on the day as, ‘The Three Amigos’, because of the novelty sombrero’s they were wearing were, Adrian Cerda from Maths and Science, Brad Owens from the Library, and Brad Williams from PE. Last year the school’s team raised just over $9,000.00, and this year they are hoping to do great things again. Friday was a ‘Free Dress’ day which involves the students making a donation towards the fundraising effort.

The team have until June 30 to reach their final tally. There is still plenty of time to make a donation, just go to the ‘Be Brave and Shave’ website and look for the Maleny High Mad Hatters team to show your support.

The school would like to thank the professional Hairdressers who gave up their time to be a part of the day. They included Nellie Donovan from Nellie’s Creative Hair Design, Maleny, Kylie Summers from Hair by Kylie, also of Maleny, and Morgan Winter and Hayley Baker from The Crooked Fringe at Witta.

The Interact students, under the guidance of Fran Tickle, did an excellent job of organising the day and selling the sausages and drinks.

The hard work of the Interact students throughout year was also recognised over the weekend, as they took out the Phillip Blakey Shield for Best Interact Club in South East Queensland.

Crazy hair

Contributed by Kylie Merola On Friday, March 13, all the students at Landsborough State School came to school looking a little crazy! There was hairspray, glitter, wigs and all sorts of weird and wonderful hair-dos as the school participated in Crazy Hair Day. Everyone donated a gold coin and they raised awareness and funds for a very worthy cause. All money raised from Crazy Hair Day will help the Leukaemia Foundation continue to provide free practical care and support for patients living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders, as well as fund exciting research into improved treatments and cures. Leukaemia is the most common type of cancer in children and teenagers.

Principal Kristy Walton explained how Crazy Hair Day is a great way to get the kids involved and be made aware of the cause at a young age.

"Students got a buzz out of seeing their friends and teachers sporting a 'new do'. We even had one student, Dylan Cammell, take the brave step of shaving his head to raise money for this worthy cause," she said.

Living - Arts Annie McIntosh exhibition at Beerwah Library

Australia's first bird art prize launches Australia’s first bird art prize has launched this week with the inaugural Holmes Art Prize calling on bird artists from across Australia to vie for this two-dimensional art award worth $10,000, which will be exhibited on the Sunshine Coast later this year.

Any realistic birdlife scene will be accepted as an entry and patron of the prize, Dr Gary Holmes, who is an avid collector of bird paintings, says that he anticipates a high calibre of entries will be received prior to the closing date of May 1.

“Australia has some of the world’s most acclaimed bird artists and it has long been my dream to see them come together in a prize such as this,” Dr Holmes explained.

“It takes a talented eye to really capture the essence of these beautiful animals. The paintings in my collection have been selected based on the sensational colours, meticulous brushwork and realistic reflection of the subject matter, and I look forward to adding a new masterpiece following the award of this prize.”

The winning artwork will be announced at the opening event held on August 12 and then acquired into Dr Holmes’ private collection.

Friends of the Gallery Caloundra President, Marie Pigott said the Holmes Art Prize is part of a suite of art awards and categories worth well over $100,000 in prize money being packaged as a larger celebration of arts and culture held on the Sunshine Coast this spring.

“The Friends are incredibly proud to be able to host this new award and look forward to building its reputation in years to come.”

By Sonia Clark Emerging Peachester artist, Annie McIntosh will have her work featured in an exhibition titled Expressive Water Media at Beerwah Library during the month of April. A colourful and energetic contemporary abstract artist, the exhibition will showcase approximately 12 pieces which will also be available for purchase throughout the exhibition.

The works will be on canvas predominately using acrylics and ink and feature a variety of subject matter and techniques, including monotype printing, collage, embellishing and various texture techniques.

Annie has always incorporated art as a vital part of her life, both professionally and personally.

Initially employed as a medical laboratory technologist, Annie dyed and stained cells and tissue which ignited a passion for viewing images from an alternative perspective. This interest was further expanded through her photographic dark room work cataloguing these images - which allowed her to master developing and printing techniques.

Creative by nature, Annie later undertook classes in weaving and basketry as well as night art classes on design. This led to a journey in textile art and contemporary woven goods which she exhibited and sold during her time living in New Zealand with her husband and two sons. Annie embraced painting later in life and in 2013 she undertook a year at the Brisbane Institute of Art studying expressive water media techniques on a

“Prior to 2013, I had not painted, and the classes ‘unleashed the beast within’ or at least sparked an energetic passion to paint,” explained Annie.

“I did weave wall rugs and contemporary furnishings for many years when living in New Zealand, and that creative urge was put on hold while we ran our business.

“Now I'm free to paint and garden, I paint almost every day, maybe making up for lost time,” she adds. Inspired by photos taken on her travels, or images or photos taken by others, as well as flowers and landscapes, Annie’s work could be described as abstract expressive.

“Although the inspiration is my starting point, the work develops from there by imagination and responding to the first abstract images I’ve created,” she said.

“The simpler paintings like flowers, are usually a joyous exploration of colour, form and texture.

The more complex, larger paintings tell more of a story with marks or symbols,” she explains.

While her earlier pieces often feature abstract flowers that seek to convey an emotional response, Annie has moved towards abstract landscapes and travel themes with layers of texture, stamping or printing and glazing, adding a complexity to her work.

The exhibition runs at Beerwah Library from Wednesday, April 1 – Monday, April 27. mornings at 9.00am, the ‘Fine Arts’ group, with a focus on painting, including pastels, water colours, oils and acrylics. Wednesdays has the ‘Porcelain Artists ‘meeting at 1.00pm focussing on decorative painting (china, plates).

Out & About Chappy Bowls Day success On Sunday the Beerwah High School Chaplaincy Committee hosted a very successful Chappy Bowls Day at Club Glasshouse.

Committee Chair, Glenda McSwain said, “on behalf of the committee I would like to sincerely thank the business people in the community for their response and generous support.

“The funds raised contribute to us being able to have a full time chaplain at the school, which in turn benefits the students and families from across the district,” she said.

Thanks to the teams and sponsors, without them the day would not have been so enjoyable.

Special mention to Rotary for cooking the barbecue, to Sharon and her team from Club Glasshouse for the use of the facilities, as well as Glasshouse Country Bowls Club’s Trevor Bertram for his help in the running of the day.

Things To Do Tie Dye Workshop

Relive some childhood memories Caloundra Model Railway Association will be holding their annual Sale and Display Day on Saturday, April 11 at the Caloundra Arts Centre Association building (North Street, Caloundra) from 9.00am to 2.00pm, and entry is free.

This exhibition has been staged over many years and attracts a wide range of visitors, from enthusiasts to beginners, as well as families.

The layouts have been admired at recent model train shows and will no doubt bring back some childhood memories to many visitors.

Also on show will be two of the smaller ‘n’ scale layouts and a working LEGO collection.

The Club has an added attraction with Display Locos from the Sunshine Coast Railway Modellers Soc. (Nambour) and the clubs new large ‘T' Track modular layout complete with buildings and scenery.

An assortment of preloved railway rolling stock, engines, track, buildings and electrics will be on table sales, and a model train set will be the raffle prize.

Club Members will be on hand to offer friendly advice, there will be light refreshments available (very good sausage rolls and drinks).

HOME Home is Toni’s little jewel

As Toni Burt sat reading her copy of Australian Country, (a contemporary country lifestyle magazine), she found herself thinking, my house is as nice as the ones featured in these pages.

So having undertaken a significant renovation of her Glass House Mountains property when she moved in five years ago, she decided to send the magazine editor an email with some photos of her home that she is clearly very proud off.

Apparently the editor agreed entirely with Toni and contacted her back arranging for a journalist and a photographer to come out to see her, so they could feature the property in their magazine.

This is the seventh property that Toni has renovated, however previously the properties were in the city and had a stronger contemporary feel to them. Toni describes her Glass House property as her own version of Shabby Chic and has named it Le Petite Bijou (which means the little jewel in French).

The whole renovation took only six week’s including all of the external painting. Toni explained that working in a project management role in corporate and commercial design meant that she just applied her professional skills to her

After seeing the before and after photos you can see that the whole house has been transformed from a well maintained and loved home, all be it one that’s interior was quite dated and included a 1950s style pale pink kitchen and bathroom, with red polyester carpet.

While Toni has kept some of the original timber walls, she chose to freshen up the interior by painting the majority of the walls a creamy white.

This alone made a massive visual change to the house without all of the rest of the refitting, and remodelling rooms she undertook to improve its functionality.

Toni kept herself on a tight budget, doing the tasks she could herself and also by purchasing many interesting decorating pieces and furniture

New bedroom now on eBay or in second hand shops. She then tweaked and customised them to her tastes, and the overall effect is just amazing.

Toni’s advice to anyone wanting to undertake a significant renovation to ensure things run smoothly time and budget wise is careful planning.

1. You need to talk to the trades people and understand what order they need to be booked in.

2. Have everything costed out in advance so you know exactly what the project will cost you.

3. Be organised, Tony purchased all of the materials for the project in the 12 or so months before the work began.

4. If you haven’t got the skills to project manage yourself, make sure you get one of the tradespeople to take on this role.

Constructing a solution to population growth It doesn’t matter whether you’re buying or selling a home, the construction industry plays a big role in supporting the market. Home ownership has never been more desirable and a good supply of new homes for Australians will make sure this remains on the cards. However, the Australian Treasury’s 2015 Intergenerational Report has thrown a spanner in the works.

The report examines the impacts of population growth and how prepared the country is to deal with them. One of the most staggering figures to come from it is the expected rate of population growth. Mr Harnisch also pointed out that state and local governments have the biggest role in removing red tape and putting a spring back into the market’s step.

This also means making sure there are affordable options for people taking out first home loans.

“This will demand a serious commitment to reforms to counter supply side impediments that drive up house prices,” he noted.

The report has added a fair bit of fuel to the policy change fire. Residential construction is both the challenge

and the solution to Australia’s rapidly growing population, and industry commentators have been crying out for governments to take down some of the biggest barriers to new home building.

Easter is only a few weeks away and our picnic area upgrade is finished and ready for the usual influx of visitors, especially on Easter Sunday, which is traditionally a very busy day in parks and rainforests.

The council have done an excellent job installing two new shelters and more beautiful wooden tables and benches. It’s all looking very nice, but sadly there’s only the same number of barbecues, but sharing is good!

What is making those chirping, peeping, screeching, squawking, cheeping, crying sounds you hear in the rainforest, and even in the bush near your home?

We know – Birds! Very good, but which bird?

The FMCA have three CDs of bird calls for sale, ‘Australian Bird Calls of the Tropical East’, ‘Voices of the Sub-Tropical Rainforests’ and ‘Australian Bird Call Favourites’. These David Stewart CDs will help bird lovers among you to identify what is calling. The CD’s go perfectly with the book ‘Birds of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve’, published a few years ago. The book is full of beautiful photographs of our birds taken by local photographers.

We also have ‘Australian Frog Call of the Sub-tropical East’ for those of you who want to know what goes croak in the night. The sale of these and other items provide the Friends with funds for their projects in and around the forest and Ed. Centre.

Autumn is the best time a year in Maleny and a great time for a walk in the rainforest; hope to see you there, or at the next meeting of the Friends on Saturday, April 18.

The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protection and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.

This summer brought a spectacular parade of butterflies to the Sunshine Coast. The variety of butterflies seen in the ‘Butterfly Blizzard’ this year was phenomenal. According to the Queensland Museum, butterfly booms usually only consist of one or two species, making this year’s boom extraordinary.

At Barung's Porters Lane Nursery, staff spotted Blue Triangles, Blue Tigers, Lemon Migrants, Caper Gulls, Caper Whites, Orchard Swallowtails, Monarchs, Varied Eggflies, Lesser Wanderers, Richmond Birdwings, Yellow Admirals, Common Pencilled-Blues, Evening Browns, Common Crows, Skippers and others.

The Queensland Museum Website suggests that there is no simple explanation for the recent explosion in butterfly numbers. The recent extreme hot and humid conditions provides perfect flying weather for butterflies as they don't need to consume as much energy to keep warm and hydrated.

We have not had exceptional rainfall; just enough to rescue plants from drought conditions and promote new growth. Butterfly breeders, Tony and Katie Hiller have noticed that dry conditions are better for butterflies and their leaf-eating caterpillars. Neither thrives in wet conditions which stop butterflies from flying and cause caterpillars to develop fungal and viral diseases which can retard growth and cause mortality.

Whatever the cause, butterflies need native food plants for their caterpillars.

At least 13 different plants that attract butterflies are available at Barung's Porters Lane Nursery and the book 'Create More Butterflies', by Frank Jordan and Helen Schwencke, is available at the nursery and the Barung office, 38a Coral Street Maleny.

Life is a bit like going fishing. A couple of weeks ago, and for the first time in months, I took my wife out in our old tinny. Usually we spend half the time exploring waterways. There is always something new and interesting around the next bend in the stream. This time we launched at Tewantin with the lower reaches of the Noosa River firmly in our sights. A friendly onlooker standing under the big tree on the shore waved me back. The winch handle had fallen off at the ramp. After thanking him and wishing him a great day too, we headed downstream. There were shallows, beacons, buoys, and other anchored vessels to navigate around. We pulled into the local hire boat business to get a bag of ice to keep our bottled water cool on a very hot day, to store any fish we might catch, and a small packet of bait.

to go home, Marion said she thought there was something on her line. Not wanting to waste the ice, we took all care to bring the fish alongside.

There was the ugliest 45 cm bottom-dwelling fish we had ever seen. Mouth and eyes up on top, large belly beneath, and a flat vertical tail. It was not meant to be kept. Cutting the line we let it swim to the deep again. And then we explored some more before heading home.

And life is like that sometimes isn’t it. Our plans do not always work out. Hopes can be dashed.

There are obstacles to be navigated around. An exciting find can be disappointing in the end.

But, if you look around, you will still see there is beauty in nature and even in people. Best of all, and regardless of the situation, God is there to enjoy time with you. How about going ‘boating’ with Him this week at your local church?

Exciting weekend at the Arnold Classic in Melbourne Contributed by Norm Taylor Local Taekwondo athletes Cameron Taylor and Leo McDonald from San Training Centre last week travelled to Melbourne to compete at the first Arnold Classic multi sports festival. The Arnold classic is the largest ever fitness and sports expo in Australia. Promoted by Arnold Schwarzenegger, the event attracted 7,000 competitors from 20 countries in 27 different sports and 60,000 spectators.

Competing in the open black belt division for the first time, Leo was uncontested in the fly weight division, and so moved up to fight in the lightweight division with Cameron. Leo had a tough draw and fought very well but lost to six time national champion from Victoria in the semi-final. The score was a close 1 point to 3 and he finished with a bronze medal.

Cameron won his first fight scoring a huge 25 points to win by point’s gap, the final score 2511. In the final Cameron lost by one point to the same opponent who defeated Leo in the semifinal. Cameron’s final score was seven points to eight to finish with a silver medal.

Social tennis scene reignites at Glass House Sports Club

The recently formed ‘Glass House Mountains Social Tennis Club’ is now conducting social tennis two evenings a week, with men, ladies and ‘keen’ junior’s all most welcome to come along.

National Touch Football Titles update Recently two locals Desley Palmer and Eve O’Mara headed to Coffs Harbour to represent the Sunshine Coast at the National Titles Touch Football titles in the over 35s team.

On day one, they had a 4-2 win against North Qld Cyclones, and a 1-5 loss against Hunter Valley Hornets. On day two a 13-1 win against NT and a 3-1 win against ACT. This was followed on day three with a 5-2 loss against Gold Coast Sharks. The rest of day was completely washed out due to 125ml of rain falling and flooding all 13 fields and car parks.

On day four they won the Preliminary Final 10-0 against NT and unfortunately they lost the Semi-Final 7-3 against Hunter Valley Hornets.

Desley said they were knocked out in the semi-finals by Hunter Valley Hornets who went through to play Gold Coast Sharks in the final, which they won 4-2.

“This was a fantastic experience for all the girls, who hope to keep most of the team together to play in the State Championships later in the year,” she said.

Eve and Desley return back to their season at Glass House Mountains Touch to play in their own local teams Grand Final next Monday night.

Their team is called the Glass House Mountains Goannas and they are very happy to have received sponsorship from the Glass House Mountains Tavern this season.

The top two teams playing in the ‘A’ grade final shall play off in the Hinterland Challenge which is held the Friday night after the finals.

This was the first of our ‘Invite the Men’ days for 2015, and it was great to see so many here to play for trophies donated by lady members Marie Oxlade, Sue Wood, Lyn Steele and Josie Thistlethwaite.

The weather wasn’t the only thing burning up the course on the day with two teams coming in with 66 Nett. The winners, on the dreaded countback were Trevor and Mavis Brimelow, from Heather Henn and Trevor Morrison, also on 66 Nett.

Second runners up were Gary Stockwell and Carol Fraser with a 66 3/4 Nett. Nearest to the pins went to Heather and Trevor on the 2nd, Bob and Andrea Campbell took out both the 5th and the 16th, while Roger and Lea Garner won the balls on the 18th. Only one more match before the Easter and School holiday break and the first match back will be April 24. Make sure that you organise a fill-in player if you are unable to play your match on the Friday night or you can re-organise the match with all the other players for another day. For any catch-up matches there is a court available at Glasshouse Primary School between 3.30pm and 5.30pm every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, and these matches need to be arranged by the players.

step out of your vehicle please!” Betty steps out of her vehicle and responds, “Is there a problem sir?” “My colleague here tells me that you have stolen this car, murdered the owner and put him in your boot.” Betty screeches, “murdered the owner? Are you serious?!” then opens her boot to reveal an empty space. Greg is surprised and says, “is this your car, ma'am?” Betty is quick to say, “yes, here are the registration papers and my license.” “Thank you ma'am, but I am puzzled, as I was told by my officer here that you didn't have a license, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner!” Greg says.
