Local News Readers Cup For Year 4 students from across the Range, reading took on a new dimension last Friday, when they got involved in Gary Crew Hinterland Reader's Cup held at the Maleny State School Hall.

There was plenty of excitement in the hall as the students who represented Maleny, Conondale, Montville and Mapleton started the day with their rousing war crys.

Then it was on to the competition. Over the past few weeks, students were required to read a selection of four books, and on the day the teams representing each school were asked a series of questions about those books and scored points for the quality of their answers. This was combined with a writing task and scores were attributed to each group throughout the morning.

The competition was neck and neck and came down to a tiebreaker.

And when Conondale were annouced as the winners on the day, the smallest school of the day, proved that they had the biggest cheers.

Conondale State School Principal Adam Vlieg said that the students had really enjoyed reading the books before the event, and had really been looking forward to attending on the day.

After seeing the passion and support shown by people at the recent Aussie World rally to save the exits to and from the Bruce Highway, Mr McArdle has secured a meeting with Mark Bailey, Minister for Main Roads so the community can address their concerns to him directly.

“After speaking with Minister Bailey during Parliament I am pleased to hear that he has since arranged to meet with Steve Amos, the owner of the Aussie World Garage and Mike Doreshenko of Save Exit 190 lobby group, to discuss their concerns about the impending closure of the northbound exit,” Mr McArdle said.

“I am heartened by the news that the communication channels have re-opened and look forward to hearing that a resolution can be reached that protects the livelihood of people who work and own businesses in the Aussie World area.”

Owner of the Aussie World Garage Mr Steve Amos is similarly pleased with the Minister’s interest.

“On behalf of the many businesses located at this complex and surrounds which depend upon local and tourist traffic to fund their businesses, we are delighted with the opportunity to share our concerns with the Minister,” he said.

“As we have petitioned on numerous occasions, we the businesses directly affected by the deletion of Exit 190, would like to see direct access retained to allow us to keep our businesses, and the people we employ, functioning long term.

“A better alternative for our community and the rainforest along Steve Irwin Way has to be found.

Easy access without destruction of environment and community has to be achievable allowing a balanced result for all those involved and not just one party,” Mr Amos said.

Mr McArdle said the current proposal has people travelling away from Aussie World before they can access a road to get back to Aussie World.

“The current proposal is clearly flawed and I thank the Minister for agreeing to the meeting and urge him to be ready to truly listen to and consider legitimate alternatives.”

Mal Brough steps up

The Witta community numbers swelled on Saturday when the Witta Rec Club hosted the inaugural Witafest event created to celebrate the cultural history of the village formerly known as Teutoburg.

The theme for this year’s event was ‘Teutoburg up to 1900’ the early years of selection, survey and settlement.

Naturally there was a strong historic focus on the day, which included Bill Kitson. He's one of Queensland’s best known surveyors, a highly respected spatial historian and Witta local. Bill was on hand to answer questions and share his local knowledge with both locals and visitors to the event.

There were also guided tours of both Witta’s Church and Cemetery which were well attended.

Those interested in the local environment had the opportunity to do a guided walk with Spencer Shaw on Berganns Lane, strolling along the historical road reserve checking out remnant rainforest and 10 year old revegetation.

There was also an extensive entertainment Rebecca Wright and Donald McKay were performing traditional Scottish music

Talented Conondale performers Astar and Rawhina program including live music, workshops, traditional games, and the opportunity to dress up and have a 19th century styled photographic portrait taken, along with gourmet food and beer.

Event co-organiser Steve Chaddock was pleased with the day, and very pleased that the weather was on their side.

At the time of going to print, local Federal member for Fisher Mal Brough had just been sworn into the Cabinet of the new Malcolm Turnbull-lead government.

As well as being the local Federal Representative for our readership, our Mr Brough is now the Special Minister of State and the Minister for Defence Materiel and Science.

Minister Bough is no newcomer to a Ministerial portfolio. He previously served in the Howard government in various roles including the Minister for Employment Services, the Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Revenue, and the Minister for Families and Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

As the Special Minister of State, Mr Brough will be responsible for various parliamentary, electoral, financial, public service and oversight affairs. As the Minister for Defence Materiel and Science, his duty is the oversight of defence procurement, financial management, project and sustainment management, materiel engineering, and materiel logistics to ensure the Australian Defence Force is equipped and supplied with the requirements as identified and approved by government.

Although these new roles in the Turnbull government will inevitably see Minister Brough drawn away from the area more frequently, it can only be a positive for the region that the electorate of Fisher has a voice in Cabinet.

Wild dogs need to be controlled Wild dogs – which are commonly known as feral dogs rather than dingoes – are a constant concern for local Glasshouse Country and Blackall Range farmers, landholders and pet owners alike.

As part of a broader integrated approach, Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Bio-Security Queensland and Sunshine Coast Council support local area coordinating groups to undertake proactive wild dog baiting programs.

“Landowners have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land and participation in wild dog baiting programs is an effective way to help meet this responsibility,” Cr McKay said.

“The current community led wild dog baiting program is being held from September 14 to October 9, for participant properties throughout Bald Knob, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Belli Park, Bells Creek, Cambroon, Conondale, Coochin Creek, Crohamhurst, Curramore, Eerwah Vale, Elaman Creek, Gheerulla, Kenilworth, Kidaman Creek, Maroochy River, Peachester, Reesville, Valdora, Witta and Yandina Creek.

“The baiting program is offered to eligible local area coordination groups at least twice a year, with each program lasting for around four weeks.”

Cr McKay said there were further methods landowners should take to reduce the impact of wild dogs and council officers were available to assist with education and action.

“Council officers are also available to arrange site assessments and to train residents in proactive and reactive trapping.

“In cases where livestock or pets have been harmed, council officers will at times install motion activated cameras on the properties to determine if the dogs that caused the damage are domestic or wild dogs. Different capture techniques and strategies are employed, dependent on this determination.”

Cr McKay said generally hinterland areas have the most wild dog sightings, however there had been a steady increase of wild animals reported in the fringe between the urban and rural land (peri-urban land areas) throughout South East Queensland.

“Council has been working with Biosecurity Queensland on a peri-urban wild dog research program to monitor, track and identify dispersal patterns for wild dogs throughout South East Queensland,” Cr McKay said.

Residents are encouraged to report wild dog sightings, incidents or requests by visiting council’s website or calling 5475 7272. Council will then investigate and action as appropriate.

Sportsground plan for the future The Beerwah Sportsground committee is inviting members of the local community to bring along creative ideas to a strategic planning session scheduled at the Sportsground from 9.30am until 12.30pm on Friday, October 2.

The plan will outline committee aspirations and priorities for the facility for five years from 2016 – 2021 and it is hoped that more community members will get involved.

“This is a fantastic community asset used by many people in the community. We would like to see even more people involved in the site in years to come and would love to hear fresh ideas from the community,” said Beerwah Sportsground committee president, David Weil.

Right now the grounds are home to numerous recreational clubs such as Beerwah and District Rugby League, Beerwah Bocce Club, Glasshouse Horse and Pony Club, Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre (BADYACC) and the Sunshine Coast Kennel Club. It also houses tennis courts, a skate park, the Beerwah Aquatic Centre and is used for camping by people from all over Australia.

Strategic plan facilitator, Ana Greenfield from Hinterland Community Development said it was a great opportunity for the community to come together and dream big for the sportsground.

“A lot of new energy is in Beerwah which is evident in the events and recent development that has taken place in the town,” she said.

The sports ground site was once crown land designated as a Reserve for Recreation and Showgrounds with the former Landsborough Shire Council.

Voices in unity

A concert of choirs will be held at the Montville Village Hall, from 2.00pm - 4.30pm on October 11. This wonderful event combines not only the voices of two remarkable choirs Sweet Chilli, and the Nightinguys, but also their expressions of love of music, song and story. The Nightinguys are eight men chock-full of fabulous a capella music.

Audiences love the passion and humour and their community cabaret shows are always at capacity.

With six enthusiastic years of singing the exquisitely tasty arrangements of Musical Director Dale Jones, they deliver a powerful sound with rich harmonic textures.

The women of Sweet Chilli have had a high profile on the Blackall Range for the last 12 years, performing at Music Festivals, Interfaith Events, Community Galas and Fundraisers, and private events and ceremonies.

Their sumptuous three and four part a cappella repertoire includes songs from – Africa, India, Sweden, Japan, Poland and several Pacific nations.

Well here we are, another term has flown by.

Playgroup will be on holidays until on October 7. We are already missing our lovely mums and children.

Lion Bob Banner presented a short report on the success of the recent Beerwah Charity Sports Day. Glasshouse Country should be proud of its combined efforts in raising money for cancer research, he said.

Zone Chairman Rob Hobson was a guest at the September Dinner Meeting. Rob spoke briefly on the important role Lions play in the community, before presenting veteran Lion John Cruickshank with a life membership. John has just completed a commendable 48 years of community service through Lions International.

Rob also presented Lion Bob Banner with a Key Members award, before inducting a new member, Lorraine Harrison, into the Beerwah Club.

The results of the Range Restaurant and Cafe Awards are in and the Winners are ‘us’ for the amazing food culture at our fingertips here on the Blackall Range!

The people have spoken and all of the participating dining venues are considered winners. After counting more than 2000 votes, the outstanding results achieved by all confirms that here on the Range, we deliver amazing food experiences.

In the restaurant section, this year's winner is Bella Vista Mapleton. Congratulations to Leigh and the team with runner up Maudy's Bistro & Bar - well done Sam and Ron's team, in a close result.

The café section was very close with Waffle-On Stroopwafels, who nudged in front of runnersup Little May Espresso and the Mary Cairncross Cafe’s team in a photo finish.

The Most Outstanding Restaurant staff winner is Leigh Oakley of Bella Vista who has a huge fan club. The Most Outstanding Café staff is the service supremo Jess Mitchell of Elements at Montville who was also last year's winner.

Prepare your Bushfire Survival Plan.

Your Bushfire Survival Plan will be critical to you surviving a major wildfire event. Some of the issues you need to consider include: Does everyone in your family understand the dangers of bushfire and how your plan will be put into action?

Have you arranged appropriate car and household insurance?

Do you know what you will take with you if you need to leave early?

Have you considered how to deal with pets and livestock?

Prepare your property.

Clear space around your home and property. Remove any fire hazards from around your home including undergrowth, raking up leaves, twigs and removing low branches.

Ensure there is access to adequate water and fire fighting equipment for you to use in the event of a fire, and that fire trucks and emergency vehicles can easily find your property and can move around easily once they are there.

Prepare yourself.

Prepare a bushfire survival kit for the eventuality of you staying during a fire, and separately a relocation kit for the eventuality of you having to leave and evacuate. The contents of each of these will be set out in your Bushfire Survival Plan (the website sets out what the contents will need to be).

Prepare yourself mentally and physically.

You need to be prepared both mentally and physically for the ferocity of a bushfire. You also need to be mentally prepared to calmly carry out your bushfire survival plan, even though your emotions may be telling you otherwise.

FIFO Families connect

Hinterland Community Development is delighted to be hosting a free morning tea for fly in fly out (FIFO) and drive in drive out (DIDO) families at Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre from 10.00am until 12.00noon on Thursday, October 8.

There are thousands of FIFO and DIDO families who call the Sunshine Coast home. The event will give FIFO families living in the Hinterland area an opportunity to connect with others whose partners work away.

Free child minding in the onsite playground will also be provided to give full time parents a break.

Members from FIFO Connect, a group of FIFO families who meet on Wednesdays at in Café Goodlife at Buderim, will also be there to chat about how it is to be a part of a support network.

“Our FIFO group means connection. Through connection we get support and friendship. It’s like a family. We are building a community,” said group coordinator Verneice.

FIFO Connect meetings are positive and fun and also allow for discussion of the common issues that affect families.

“A lot of FIFO families are new to our area. The group helps people get established. It provides connection, support and information,” said group member Sherrie.

The FIFO morning tea is a part of Mental Health Week activities being held at Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre with sponsorship from Partners in Recovery and Care Connect.

District Governor welcomed Contributed by Diane Hobson Lions District Governor Rodd Chignell and his wife Lion Wendy were welcomed at the Mooloolah Valley Lions Club September dinner meeting, held at Glenview Gardens. It was inspiring to hear him talk about Lions and share ideas about how the club might further serve the community. Rodd and Wendy have dedicated so much of their life to serving others. Rodd has been actively involved in community service activities for over 36 years. Outside of the Lions, Rodd is also involved in developing youth and community projects in his local area.

We also welcomed a new Lions member to the club. Fran has been a valued volunteer at the club for many years. After hearing Rodd talk, she was herself inspired to further support the club, by officially joining the group. She realised that our club values all levels of support.

President Kathy Selleck presented a cheque to Michelle from the Glenview State School P&C and another cheque to DG Rodd for the Lion's Children's Mobility Fund.

Mooloolah Valley Lions are very supportive of local schools, groups and community initiatives and are looking for like minded people to join the club. We welcome anyone from the local community including Mooloolah Valley, Palmwoods, Eudlo, Glenview and beyond, who would like to come to our Lions dinners.

Cats and dogs living in harmony with kookaburras, blue tongue lizards and ringtail possums? It can happen. Learn how at a free public seminar hosted by the Sunshine Coast Council and presented by the RSPCA. The seminar will be held on Thursday, October 1, from 6.00pm at the Lake Kawana Community Centre.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the free seminar is aimed at local community members and pet owners who are keen to learn about and protect local native wildlife.

“This is a great opportunity for local cat and dog owners to learn how to keep their backyard safe, and be a responsible pet owner,” Cr McKay said.

“The RSPCA’s wildlife veterinary team will offer tips and lessons on how to reduce your impact on, and live in harmony with, our native urban wildlife.

“Participants will have the chance to have all of their wildlife questions answered.”

Each year over 15,000 wild native animals are presented to the RSPCA Qld Wildlife Hospital, and that number is growing.

Interested participants can book online at the Council’s Community Hub Website or call 5413 1400. The Lake Kawana Community Centre is located at 114 Sportsmans Parade, Bokarina. Parking is available at the venue.

Relay for climate change The Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) is organising its second annual Climate Change Relay to be held on Saturday, September 26, between 10.30am and 8.30pm. The Climate Change Relay is a community event organised by the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) to call for urgent action on Climate Change.

The relay will walk along the beaches of the Sunshine Coast starting at Sunshine Beach (10.30am) and Kings Beach (12.15pm) and finishing at Cotton Tree (5.45pm). The route is divided into 35 stages of approximately two kilometres each and people can join at any point along the route for one or more stages.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Birds and bats

with Sue Tanner With the beautiful warm weather we have been having recently (what happened to winter this year?) many of our migrating birds have already returned to the rainforest.

The cheeky Rufus Fantails (pictured) can be seen on the forest floor often very close to the track with their pretty orange fantails displayed.

Fruit doves can be heard calling, in particular the distinctive low sound Wompoo. Whip birds and Green Catbirds hold ‘conferences’ across the forest and the Paradise Rifle Bird can also be heard, with a loud screeching cry.

One of the joys of being on the information desk in the afternoon is watching the pond for the many bird species that come to drink and wash.

On a recent shift I saw a Golden Whistler, a couple of Lewin’s Honey Eaters, a Spectacled Monarch and several others since forgotten (I’m sure they’ll be back).

The Grey Faced/ Headed Flying Foxes are still in the Piccabean Palms near the creek. They are very chatty especially when joined by the Red and Little Black Flying Foxes – they can be heard all over the forest.

I had a group of kids on the Rose Gum platform a week or so ago and the whole colony of flying foxes took flight over our heads. Not sure what startled them but they were a spectacular sight with the sun shining through their wings.

The forest is a safe environment for these little creatures and they pose absolutely no danger to visitors.

The local Debutante season has now been completed for 2015 with two very glamourous events held locally, featuring 24 lovely young ladies with their partners, being formally presented to ‘Society’.

The Glasshouse Country Debutante Ball was held at the Beerwah Community Centre on Saturday, September 12 and the Maleny Debutante Ball was held at the Maleny Show Pavilion on Saturday, September 19.

Living - Arts Mamma Mia a potters inspiration Maleny artist Cathy Lawley who works in clay, creates earthy, whimsical works of art that have been collected for gardens and homes around the country.

Whilst primarily self-taught, Cathy holds a Diploma in Ceramics and is an award-winning artist who has attended workshops with highly regarded potters and Raku Masters both in Australia and internationally.

In 2014 Cathy fulfilled a personal dream – travelling to Tuscany, where she shared her passion for clay and raku pottery for 14 days with a group of very excited Australian participants.

Now after such a successful tour, Cathy has been asked to take another tour in 2016, this time to The Greek Island of Skopelos, where the famous ‘Mamma Mia’ movie was filmed.

Diana from Artemis Tours has asked Cathy to teach in Skopelos. Diana lives in Kalymnos, she will also be our interpreter and tour guide, throughout the two weeks.

At the same time, Cathy hopes that others will follow their dream and join her for this fabulous and fun pottery and sculpture experience.

Skopelos Foundation for the Arts School is set in a beautiful mountain top over looking the deep blue Aegean Sea and stunning Mediterranean sunsets. This will be a totally unforgettable experience!

With all the details looked after, all that participants have to do is settle in, relax and enjoy themselves in the workshop and their tour visits. Partners and non-participants are also welcome, with many attractions and opportunities exploring the nearby islands, shopping, swimming or hire a scoter. There’s so much or so little to do and to be discovered on the Island.

“Although it’s not until next year, I think the timing gives people a great chance to plan and save for a fabulous holiday experience, and to think about where else they might like to visit after the workshop is over,” Cathy says.

The Greek Island ‘Mamma Mia’ sculpture workshop program ensures plenty of time for workshop activities including throwing on the wheel, creating sculptures, glazing and firing; culminating in an exhibition of participants’ finished pieces in the nearby village.

All this activity will be balanced by visits to other stunning Greek Islands such as Skiathos and Alonnisos, galleries, museums, markets, and authentic Greek cuisine, also fun Greek dancing nights.

During the month of October, Cathy will be displaying sculptures and information about the ‘Mamma Mia’ Greek Island tour in the front window of Peace of Green Gallery Maleny.

Living - Arts Shine at Glasshouse Christian College Contributed by Sandy Johnson ‘Shine’ is Glasshouse Christian College’s annual event showcasing Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts with students from Prep to Year 12 involved in this gala occasion.

Now in its third year, Shine 2015 was bigger and better than all the others preceding it.

Stages were set up in the undercover area, the library, the hospitality courtyard and the college was decorated by illuminated sculptures, student artwork, fairy lights and lanterns.

The program was full with simultaneous performances occurring on all three stages, each one with a completely different atmosphere. The large undercover area was used for the dance performances, band items and large singing

groups such as Little Voices and Sing & Shout.

The library had an intimate feel with mood lighting and a small stage for individual and small group musical items. The stage in the hospitality courtyard was subtly lit and had the feel of an outdoor café and showcased modern music from some of the more senior students.

The art gallery was set up in the library and this year’s student work was spectacular. Art students had also been busy converting plastic soft drink bottles to stunning chandeliers and turning sticky tape into beautifully illuminated angels.

Shine is all about giving Glasshouse Christian College students an opportunity to demonstrate their amazing abilities and that is just what they did!

Expression / impression on show

The interweaving geometry of space, time and object permeate both Kevin Grealy’s and Jacky Lowry’s work. Kevin is strongly influenced by the 19th century Japanese woodblock printmakers Hiroshige and Hokusai, especially their portrayal of the effects of season and weather on mountains and skies. He portrays the endless variety of shapes, textures, colours and moods of the Glasshouse Mountains in response to the time of day, the position of the sun and shadows, the

season of year, changing weather, the length of focus and the aspect of view.

Kevin’s work is strongly graphic while Jacky’s, although using bold graphic techniques, tends to calligraphic resolution, somewhat reminiscent of Escher.

The repetition of subtly different yet intrinsically similar tones and shapes, provides a mesmerising but definitive rhythm to her works, many of which use leaves and plants as their origin.

The completed pieces are strongly linear, and themes around paths, journeys, luminosity and spirituality frequently emerge; nevertheless the patterned and abstract collages still retain a resonance with the original forms and emotions of their source images.

Jacky and Kevin’s exhibition ‘Expression / Impression’ will be on display at Vianta Arts, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah, from September 27 to October 31, and opens at 6.00pm on Friday, October 2. Range of artists on show

Art’s Connects held the first of their monthly ‘Open Studio’ weekends for 2015 in August and now another group of talented artists are getting ready to open their studios on the weekend of September 26 and 27 from 10.00am – 4.00pm each day.

The artists that will be throwing open their doors to the public to show you inside the workings of their arts practices are Kaye Leach, Jacky Lowry, Barb Willcocks, Nita Clare Lester and Wendy Edmonds.

Barb Willcocks is a watercolour artist and her studio is located at 176 Obi Obi Road, Mapleton. Kaye Leach is a ceramic artist who you can visit at 363 North Maleny Road, North Maleny. Printmaker Jacky Lowry is located at 941 Aherns Road, Conondale, along with Nita Clare Lester a Botanist, who has the Wilde Woode studio at 293 Willandra Place, Mapleton.

The final open studio will be painter Wendy Edmonds at 27 Glen Eden Court, Flaxton.

Watercolour exhibition

Maleny resident Michele Retschlag, an award winning artist and teacher with many years’ experience in the watercolour medium, is opening her North Maleny studio for nine days to show approximately 40 paintings.

Michele trained at the Brisbane College of Art, graduating with a four year Diploma, before working at the University of Queensland as an illustrator.

She was introduced to the watercolour medium almost 30 years ago, and still retains her initial enthusiasm.

“The unpredictability of working in watercolour is challenging, exciting and loads of fun,” she says.

Michele established her own watercolour school in Brisbane, has tutored regularly for the Watercolour Society of Queensland, as well as many other art groups in Queensland and northern New South Wales, and has been invited to judge on many occasions.

The studio exhibition runs from 10.00am to 4.00pm, October 31 through to November 8.

You Said It Refreshing approach

In a time when we are bombarded by doctored images and words in most publications, I was heartened to see the family photo on the reverse side of the recent pamphlet from the Member for Glass House Andrew Powell.

How refreshing it was to see a family ‘selfie’ of happy children and parents.

No staging, no specific message, just laughter and fun. It seems to sum up the essence of who our representative is and why we are lucky to have him.

Congratulations to all involved with the 22nd Annual Anglican Deb Ball, in particular the debutantes and their partners, and their parents.

As always it was a night to remember. A big ‘Thank you’ to all those who helped in any way, from those who taught them the dances, to those who did the washing up and the cleaning up after, and the many jobs in between. Also thank you to our MC Mike Turner, chaplain of Beerwah High, and those receiving the Debs.

Next year the Ball will be held on September 3.

It was my pleasure to be a guest at the Glass House State School Art Gala and Night Market last Friday, September 11.

The warm welcoming for someone who is not part of the school community, the catering, and of course the beautiful art work, all contributed to make for a wonderful experience.

What an achievement

The roll-out of so-called 'smart' meters across Australia in the last five years gets little publicity in most media. However if you lived in Victoria you would have heard all about them. There they are mandatory for consumers in VIC, but 1/10th of the population have rejected them. The promise is that they are 'green' and are a revolutionary method for you to save on power use. And they allow what's called TOU (time-of-use) rates which will, it’s promised, save you money.

However time-based pricing has not (according to studies in the USA, Canada and Ireland) significantly changed overall power consumption.

The smart grid industry has continued to spend billions of dollars to deploy smart meters despite the mounting evidence that they are of no value to consumers and actually introduce significant privacy, safety and security risks.

By Sonia Clark What’s a wedding without an impressive cake? GC&M News went behind the scenes and spoke to local cake maker, Jo Jones to find out more about what goes into preparing a wedding cake.

An important part of making a wedding cake is sitting down with the clients to discuss their requirements. These days the bride and groom are both usually part of the consultation process, and they often bring pictures of ideas that they like. The consultation will discuss design options, the number of guests expected, whether the cake will be eaten at the wedding or taken home, as well as themes and colour schemes.

Often, the cake will reflect the personalities of the bride and groom as well as tying in with the overall colours and theme of the wedding.

A variety of themes have been popular; with classic wedding cakes featuring simple ribbon/edible lacework and flowers among the most favoured. Textured cakes are proving popular as butter cream is coming back into fashion, as well as a mix of classic and textured layers. Jo has also found that a recent trend has been for ‘rustic themed’ cakes; where the cake is layered with icing and the cake underneath is still visible.

Chocolate mudcake is currently the most popular flavour choice followed by ‘red velvet’, (a slight raspberry/ chocolate tasting blend) white chocolate mud cake is also a firm favourite. Often clients with tiered cakes will mix the flavours for each tier.

Jo suggests a three month lead time for delivery of wedding cakes. This allows time to source handmade or personalised toppers and to create, set and dry sugar craft items, as well as allowing time to book in the actual making of the cake.

Some cakes can take days to create and remember during wedding season cake bookings fill up fast.

By Lea Parkes Recently I attended a really smart, thoroughly modern Wedding Shower, that had all the special traditional elements and the bridesmaid organising the event showed just how smart she is, by having Club Glass House host the event.

The bride at the centre of the celebration was our lovely receptionist Sarah, and while she lives locally, her bridesmaids are based in Toowoomba and the Gold Coast so it wasn’t really practical for them to host an Margaret Moffat with Sarah Taylor-F ox event at their homes. (soon to be Moffat) So Sharon Bochow and her team at Club Glasshouse came to the rescue, setting up their function room to comfortably accommodate quite a lot of ladies who had come together for the special occasion.

The bridesmaids had done a great job of decorating the room. It looked gorgeous and featured all the things that the bride loves, a backdrop that doubled as a photo booth, photos featuring the bride and groom to be’s romance, and lots and lots of pink.

With Club Glass House’s new separate food servery area, it worked really well as the food is all out on display, including hot box items which meant that guests could wander back and forth picking and choosing what they would like to eat.

It was a lovely afternoon, and with the personalised assistance that the club provides, it also meant that the event could come in on budget, and none of the guests had to clean up at the end of the afternoon!

Flute ‘Star’ to shine in Maleny According to the London Daily Mail, Australian flautist Jane Rutter is ‘a star of the flute’ and Maleny Arts Council (MAC) has invited her to the hinterland for a return concert in the Maleny Community Centre on October 18 from 2.00pm - 4.00pm.

President of MAC, Jennifer Radbourne, said Jane particularly wished to come back to Maleny because she loved the audience, the atmosphere and meeting the patrons at 'Drinks on the Deck' after the performance.

“Drinks on the Deck upstairs at the Community Centre following our afternoon shows have become a tradition, and we invite our audience again to meet Jane Rutter and join us for refreshments after ‘Flute Spirits’ her new, unique and intimate concert,” said Professor Radbourne.

The concert on October 18 will include Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s solo flute version of the ‘Spring’ from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons as well as Indian Ragas and contemporary incantations played on a variety of flutes, gold, silver, wooden, bamboo and ebony, and the Irish whistle.

In the Garden Get Up & Grow with Jade King Spring has arrived in Green Valley with a burst of flowers, hatching chickens everywhere, newborn lambs and squealing piglets!

Luckily all of this beauty is not diminished by the corresponding arrival of pests and disease. The hardest part is to deal with these outbreaks organically, but there are both homemade and commercial organic options available. Here are just a few.

Organic Pesticides

Homemade White Oil – aphids, mites and whitefly.

Directions: 1 cup of ordinary cooking oil mixed with 1/4 cup of dishwashing liquid. Dilute one tablespoon per litre of water.

This solution effectively suffocates the pests and is simple and effective.

Commercial Organic Pesticides - Dipel (caterpillars), Ecofend (mites and aphids), Eco-Oil (mites, scale and aphids).

Organic Herbicides

Vinegar – weeds Directions: 1 cup of salt to 1 litre of vinegar mixed until dissolved.

This must be brushed directly onto weed leaves as it is not a selective weed killer and will kill anything it touches. Also it is not to be poured onto soil as this can make the soil inhospitable for plants and soil organisms.

Commercial Organic Herbicides: Weed Blitz, Bioweed.

Organic Fungicides

Milk Spray – powdery mildew Directions: Mix 100ml milk with one litre of water. Spray regularly on both sides of leaves.

Apple blossoms attract butterflies to the garden There is substantial anecdotal evidence that milk treatments can be effective in the protection of some plants from powdery mildew and other viruses. It should be noted that there is some debate regarding the type of milk used, with gardeners advocating that it must be organic milk as it contains antibiotic qualities.

Bi-carb and Condy’s Crystals – aphids, slugs and mildew.

Directions: One teaspoon of bicarb-soda into one litre of water. Add one litre of milk and a teaspoon of Condy’s Crystals (Potassium permanganate).

Scientific studies indicate that the key ingredient, potassium permanganate is effective in reducing fungal infections, yet its efficacy is compromised by environmental conditions such as rain etc. The bicarbonate soda is known to alter the pH of the leaf environment preventing fungal spores from germinating; however it does not actually kill the fungus. As noted, these are preventative measures and often will not cure the problem.

Commercial Organic Fungicides: Eco-Fungicide or Ecocarb.

A low interest rate is good for borrowers as it allows them to pay less to finance their loans, making it cheaper.

2. HIGHER BUILDING APPROVALS Between June and July 2015, the number of building approvals increased 4.2% in seasonally adjusted terms, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

“The rise in dwelling units approved will add further to strength to the pipeline of work yet to be done by residential builders with 223,000 dwellings approved in the 12 months to July,” said Peter Jones, chief economist Master Builders Australia.

3. INVESTOR CREDIT PROPORTION IS DROPPING

An increase in the number of homes available for purchase reduces the pressure exerted by large demand.

This means that prices will hopefully increase less as time goes on, making them more affordable.

However, this does look promising, as APRA placed stricter regulations on property investment loans earlier this year. This was done to give people looking to live in their own homes more of a chance of being able to buy the property.

This is the lowest level it has been since March 2015, but it is only just at the beginning of showing a decline, so experts are warning not to conclude anything just yet.

At the heart of the Christian Gospel is the notion of sacrificial service which has sprung into our world following the example of Jesus Christ. His whole words and actions have inspired folk of good will in every corner of the world.

In our own nation there are large organisations like Angelcare, Bluecare, Ozcare, The Salvation Army and St John Ambulance who are inspired in one way or another by Christian Values.

There are also a host of other not-for-profit organisations, which like those with a Christian ethos, serve our community day and night, especially the less fortunate. Organisations like Rotary, Lions, APEX known as ‘Service Clubs’ are household names which contribute so much to society. The gospel writes, Matthew, Mark and Luke agree that Jesus said St Mark 10: 41-45 ‘Whoever would be great among you must be your servant, whoever would be first among you must be slave to all. For the son of man (Jesus) also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’ See also St Matthew 20:26-28, St Luke 22:26-27.

Finally, could I suggest a well known prayer to reinforce the return of sacrificial service to our human brother and sisters, in the words of St Ignatius of Loyola 1491 – 1556. ‘Teach us good lord to serve as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the words, to act and not to seek for rest, to labour and not to ask for any reward. Save that of knowing that we your will.’

After a long hard day or week in whatever service you do, could I suggest you sit down with a cup of tea or coffee or some other beverage, turn on the TV and catch a rerun of ‘Are you being served!’

Business Bowls Competition The first round of the 2015 Spring Series commenced on Wednesday night, September 16.

The competition runs for eight weeks and is held at night at Club Glass House.

It consists of 16 teams of three members. The team members come from local businesses and have a great evening of fun playing lawn bowls.

They are mostly not bowls club players, but just out to play in a fun atmosphere.

The evening commences with a sausage sizzle, followed by a game of bowls at the end of which prize money is awarded, followed by more socialising in the Club House.

This Business Bowls Competition has been running for a number of years now.

It consists of two series a year of eight weeks duration. One in Spring and one in Summer.

Vying for a team in the competition is hotly contested, as it is proving more popular with local businesses every year.

The results of Round One were ‘The Old Farts’ (Gary Gray, Adam Berrell and Josh Waterworth) with 91 points.

Denis Bochow, a former member, may find it hard to get back into the team?

Runners up were the ‘Beerwah Trophies’ (Michelle McCoombe, Jill Kircheiner and John Annakin).

Amy Trevan of Glasshouse Christian College who is going to compete in U10 High Jump.

Laura Vobr of Beerwah who will compete in Townsville for Discus and Shot put.

Contributed by Sue Greentree On Thursday, September 17, 59 women played in the Monthly Medal in three divisions for trophies donated by Nicole Purvis, First National and John Mellish. The competition was a monthly medal/ stroke/ putting and the worthy winners were: Division 1Karen Gannon with 67 nett, runner-up was Mavis Brimelow with 72 nett and Division 1 gross winner was Sonia Kenway with 82 off the stick. Division 2 winner was Ruth Bowie with 72 nett, runner-up was Teresa Keast with 74 nett and division 2 gross winner was Margaret Zonca with 98 off the stick. Division 3 winner was Marie Norton on a count back with 73 nett, runner-up Heather Coyle on a count back with 73 nett and division 3 gross winner was Janelle Balfe with 109 off the stick.

The Putting competition was won by Cathy Stone with 27 putts.

NTP’s were won by: Hope Hannah No: 2; Lea Doyle No: 5; Barbara Whitfield No: 16 and Karen Gannon No: 18. The Ball Rundown went to 77 nett. Next week’s competition on Thursday, September 24 the ladies will be playing a 2 Ball Best Ball Stableford for trophies donated by Sue Williamson and Barbara Whitfield. The ladies welcome new members, beginners and visitors. Happygolfing.

I have the authority A DPI Officer stopped at a farm in Kilcoy and talked to an old farmer. He told the farmer, “I need to inspect your farm for illegally grown drugs.”

The farmer said, “okay, but don’t go into that field over there…”, as he pointed out the location.

The DPI Officer verbally exploded and said, “look mister, I have the authority of the state government with me!” Reaching into his rear back pocket, the arrogant officer removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the farmer. “See this badge?! This badge means I can go wherever I want. On any land! No questions asked, no answers given!

The farmer kindly nodded, apologised, and went about his chores. Moments later the farmer heard loud screams, he looked up and saw the DPI agent running for his life, being chased by the farmers big Santa Gertrudis Bull. With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it was likely that he’d sure enough get gored before he reached safety. The officer was clearly terrified.

The old farmer threw down his tools, ran as fast as he could to the fence, and yelled at the top of his lungs “your badge! Show him your badge!”
