ost of us who have headed up to the Glass House Mountains lookout, would have driven past our local historic building Bankfoot House, where the original home was built in 1868 to service the steady stream of individuals and coach traffic, heading north to the gold fields.

The central section of Bankfoot House is the oldest surviving building in the Glass House Mountains district.

However many people these days have never had the chance to take a look around or have a tour of the building.

All of that is about to change, as a decision has been made to open the building to the public on the last Sunday of each month as a trial until the end of 2015.

This Sunday will be the first one of these days and the doors will be swung wide open between 10.00am – 3.00pm, with adults being charged $5.00 entry. Last Friday, The Federal Minister for the Arts, Senator George Brandis dropped into Maleny to catch up on the latest in the local arts scene.

Local farmer Greg Newton took advantage of Minister Brandis being on the coast for other business, and invited him to take a tour of Maleny.

“I just thought that, as the Arts Minister, he’d be interested in seeing our vibrant arts community,” said Greg.

“I’ve been to Parliament House in Canberra and seen some of what they have hanging there – and to be honest, the place could really do with some quality works of art, that our local artists produce.”

The Minister was given a tour around Gary Myers Maleny Art Gallery in Maple Street before being led on a street walk along through Maleny to meet some of the local business owners and residents, and to soak up the vibe of the town.

As well, the Minister was given a tour through a private gallery of the works of Joy Roggenkamp, a renowned artist who lived and painted in the area in the 1980’s and 90’s.

Asked whether he was familiar with the artistic endeavours of the area, the Queensland Senator showed his true colours.

“One of my favourite works is a piece from Rick Everingham who now resides in Maleny.

“I visit here as often as I can, as I have a holiday place on the Sunshine Coast.”

Artist Gary Myers has paintings in the offices of Federal Member Mal Brough and State Member Andrew Powell, and took the opportunity to suggest to the Minister that more local artworks could be added to the Parliament House Art Collection.

“From what I’ve seen today, I think that is a wonderful suggestion,” said Minister Brandis.

A mixed reaction to the revised A revised layout for the Bruce Highway upgrade between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway was released on Friday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the layout was based on several years of planning and community consultation.

“The layout we see today has some differences to the layout released in April 2013 because it takes into account the extensive community feedback received over the last two years,” Mr Truss said.

“The priority for this upgrade is road safety. The current infrastructure is not up to standard, and this upgrade will create a safer road and ease congestion along this section of the Highway.”

Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle agrees that the Bruce Highway must be made safer, but he believes that the plan must also take into account local businesses, and based on this latest design, their future is under a cloud.

“The Aussie World collection of businesses have been trading and employing locals for years.

Threatening the viability of these businesses is very disappointing" he said.

The Aussie World Garage is the only independent service station between Brisbane and Gympie that employ local people.

“This little group of shops is very important to those people in the area.

"The number of people needing access to these shops will only grow over time,” Mr McArdle said.

Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey said environmental factors were a higher priority under the revised layout.

“The project team has had to work within a constrained corridor,” Mr Bailey said.

“These constraints included the Jowarra section of Mooloolah National Park, the Mooloolah River flood plain, the Mooloolah Cemetery and existing private and commercial properties.”

Mr Bailey said the new design layout reduced the effect of the project on the Beerwah State Forest by 11 hectares, compared with the previous draft plan.

“This means only 5% of the forest will be affected,” he said.

“The Department of Transport and Main Roads is evaluating alternative layouts for the Caloundra Road interchange, in a bid to further reduce the effect on the forest.

“The revised layout makes the boundaries for the upgrade corridor clear, and also allows for potential enhancements during the detailed design phase.”

However, according to the Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest Group, the community action group who have been battling to protect much of the forests and ecosystems of the area from the road development, there are still major problems with the Department of Main Roads plans.

“The latest design for the Caloundra Road / Bruce Highway interchange upgrade will still impact a significant portion of the Meridan Hill Section of Beerwah State Forest,” said Wayne Reid, group member and local conservationist.

layout for the Bruce members were told that the redevelopment plans could not be changed to be less destructive, as it would cost more.

“The trouble is, they're not putting a value on the forest,” explained Wayne.

“Paying lip service to our concerns while pushing ahead with plans to ruin a fabulous and precious public amenity is not an acceptable outcome.”

The project is yet to be approved by the Federal Department of the Environment which may require design changes to protect significant environmental components.

Federal Member for Fisher Mal Brough is happy community concerns have been heard.

“The upgrade of this stretch of the Bruce Highway is extremely important and I am glad to see that

the design has been changed to try to address some of the concerns voiced by the community over the past two years,” Mr Brough said.

“On 23 July I will be holding an information session at Daisy’s Place, Glenview at 5.00pm on the revised design and I encourage everyone with an interest in the upgrade to pop in and see the updated maps (more details on page 21).

“In the coming months industry briefings will begin and an Expressions of Interest process is proposed to begin in September, with construction likely to start next year.”

During the detailed design process TMR will work with businesses, environmental groups and the community to further reduce impacts where possible.

On Saturday, August 8, a very special family event will be held at Nungeena (60 Streak Road, Glass House Mountains) that is open to everyone to attend. The ‘Spirit to Spirit’ bush tucker and healing day is collaboration between a number of indigenous based organisations, with additional funding assistance from the Sunshine Coast Council.

One of the key organisers, Leanne Phillips manages the not-for-profit organisation ‘The Sanctuary of Embracing Difference’, and is excited to be bringing back healing business to Nungeena. In a bid to bring women’s strength as nurturers and healers back into the community, the day will feature presentations and talks all conducted by Aboriginal women over a range of empowering and healing topics.

“We want to transform perceptions and show the real face of Aboriginal people – where we are proactive and reinvesting in our communities,” says Leanne.

The day will celebrate Aboriginal bush tucker and healing (both traditional and contemporary).

There will be a bush tucker menu on offer with barbecue roo burgers, beef burgers with bush spices, yummy bush tucker cakes and biscuits available for purchase. The event will also have a jarjums (kid’s) program running all day including activities such as head dress making, painting, storytelling and dance.

Hunter looks to world championship win Landsborough local Hunter Lawrence is currently in Spain to compete at his fifth World Junior Motocross Championships.

The 15-year-old Hunter has travelled the world to compete in the championships since 2011 and will represent Australia in the 125cc class.

In 2013 he missed out on the 85cc championship title by just one point, and last year a heavy crash ended his world championship campaign early.

Hunter is in better shape than ever, ahead of this year’s titles, having won two Queensland championship titles in June.

He also leads his class at the MX Nationals by over 15 points.

Motorcycling Queensland General Manager Rob Ferguson says he’s got confidence in the young rider’s abilities.

Work continues on Landsborough Hall Contributed by Linda Morse The makeover of the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall is well underway, with Stage 1 already completed, thanks to a grant from the Sunshine Coast Council.

A grant of $55,000.00 provided the funding to demolish part of the Supper Room to provide access to level the Hall and restore its structural integrity.

“Hunter is one of our most promising junior Motocrossers,” he says.

Hunter's younger brother, Jett, came away from the 2014 World Junior Motocross Championships with a 65cc title at just 11-years-old.

This year’s championships kicked off in El Molar, Spain on July 19.

Meet the stars of Opera Q’s Figaro in Maleny Opera Queensland’s new take on Rossini’s ‘Barber of Seville’ comes to the hinterland on Sunday, August 2 under the auspices of Maleny Arts Council, and patrons will have the chance to meet the cast after the performance.

Adapted by OQ’s artistic director Lindy Hume, ‘The Adventures of Figaro’ stars include Jason Barry-Smith as Figaro and award winning soprano Ashleigh Crane as Rosina. Well known actor Sandro Colarelli makes his opera debut as the frazzled servant Fiorello and Matthew Broadbent is Rosina’s doddery suitor Doctor Bartolo.

Maleny Arts Council president Professor Jennifer Radbourne explained the committee traditionally invited patrons to join the cast for drinks on the deck after productions held in the Community Centre.

“We are delighted that we can present Opera Queensland’s celebrated touring production, ‘The Adventures of Figaro’ in Maleny, and to invite the audience to meet and talk with the cast after the show.

“This is the first time we have had OQ on the hinterland and the committee thanks the Playing Queensland Fund and arTour for making it possible. It is exciting too that the Maleny Singers will be involved in the production,” she said.

Director Lindy Hume said the high-energy romp exploited all the Spanish clichés from the bright orange design to Manuel’s accent we all remember from Fawlty Towers.

Got an axe to grind?

Then come along to the Beerwah Charity Sports Day on Saturday, August 22 to see one of the most magnificent collections of axes anywhere in Australia. Steve Lehmann from Ipswich who has been collecting axes since 1992, and has amassed over 1700 of them, will be bringing as many of them as he can to display at the Show.

There are battle axes from medieval times, axes from Australia’s earliest colonial times used for felling timber, and to make the colony’s first buildings. His collection also contains Adzes and hatchets for making shingle roofs and axes of all kinds from all over the world. It truly is the most remarkable collection.

Beerwah and surrounding area started life in the mid 1800s as a timber felling and logging area. The history of those times has been captured by photos and sketches held by families and historical associations throughout the district, with the axe being the symbol of the development of the country. So it is very appropriate that this collection is being shown at Beerwah Charity Sports Day. Steve’s wife, Maree, has a collection of her own – an incredible array of egg beaters. If you thought beating an egg white was a simple process, you’ll be amazed at the diversity and ingenuity behind some of Maree’s collection. She’ll be bringing part of her collection along to add to their display at the Charity Sports.

Beerwah Lions – July Update

Contributed by Bob Banner The members that attended this month’s dinner meeting held at the Hideaway at Beerwah enjoyed ‘Christmas in July’ themed beautiful and traditional meal prepared by hosts Jenny and Simon Farell.

During the meeting it was reported that 200 kilos of empty aluminum cans had been collected for July, and sent off for recycling.

Two Lions were honored for their long term community service. Lion Ron Boyle who was an original charter member of the club, has now clocked up 48 years of service. For his efforts Ron was awarded with a 48 year Monarch Certificate.

Ken Loveday received a 25 year Chevron award for his long term commitment.

Two other Lions, Fred Wells and John Cruikshank were treated to a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’, as both were celebrating their birthdays.

Lions give to Rural Fire Brigade

Contributed by Di Hobson Mooloolah Valley Lions Club enjoyed another great dinner meeting at Glenview Gardens Restaurant.

The guest speaker was Hamish Murdoch from the Rural Fire Brigade.

President Kathy Selleck presented Hamish with a cheque to assist the Brigade with much-needed funds to enable them to carry out their vital role in the community.

Club members will be out in the community again assisting with a President Kathy Selleck presents barbecue at the Mooloolah Valley State Hamish Murdock with a cheque for School Sports Day. the Rural Fire Service Other future fundraising projects include their monthly barbecue at Martin Rungert Park Mooloolah, a ‘Grocery Grab’ raffle to raise funds for the ‘Lions Cord Blood’, and barbecues at Bunnings and at Moofest in September.

The next dinner meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 19 at Glenview Gardens. Contributed by Katrina D’Clara Beerwah State School is pleased to welcome our new permanent school principal Ms Shirley Francis. Ms Francis joins our school community with a wealth of experience in teaching and leadership.

After working in a range of rural Queensland schools, she has experience across all year levels from Prep through to Year 7, including composite, multi-age and single year level classes.

While meeting with the school's staff and the P&C executive committee, Ms Francis expressed her enjoyment of working in a small school because of the opportunities to really get to know the students, staff and community members.

It is her goal to work closely with the staff, students and the school community to continue to make Beerburrum State School and its community a great place in which to live and learn.

Local tourism activity

Contributed by Judi Tomlinson The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce is building a tourism group to ensure local businesses are represented in events and publications promoting the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland.

Part of this process is networking, meeting people from other Chambers of Commerce, government and tourism groups including Sunshine Coast Destinations and Hinterland Tourism.

These groups are willing to include our region in their planning, but we need to be on the ball, and provide accurate local information.

We have a unique attraction with our Glass House Mountains, and lovely regional towns able to look after our visitors. Our goal is to promote this region actively, and encourage people to stay a while.

Members of the Chamber of Commerce will soon be invited to a guided Coach tour of our region, courtesy of Glasshouse Country Coaches and the Visitor Information Centre staff. Businesses can better engage with visitors then, to highlight our attractions and facilities. This tour has also been offered to staff at Sunshine Coast Destinations, Sunshine Coast University Tourism Studies and council project officers for promoting agribusiness.

More activities will be shared with members soon. Our AGM is in August.

We hope to attract active members, and more Executive Committee members so we can share the workload. We need to be more efficient about communicating what we do. Come along if you want to help promote your business and meet other local business owners.

A new project for the Hinterland is a tourism newspaper with a lovely bright map. It will be circulated to all visitor information centres within a five hour radius of us, including big promotions in Brisbane and Sunshine Coast airports. At its dinner meeting on Tuesday, July 14, Caloundra Evening VIEW inducted four new members into the club. She started at the original Beerwah IGA in 2008 as a storeperson before it was demolished to make way for the current complex.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Is it a real nest?

with Sue Tanner In the Education Centre we have a magpie’s nest. So? … I hear you ask … It’s just a bird’s nest.

But this nest is made of wire!

Found by one of councils’ natural areas teams it was brought to us with the question, “are you interested or should we chuck it?” Silly question!

It is made of various thicknesses of wire, brush cutter cord, a coat hanger, wire mesh, even an electrical wire with a switch – the night light?

It has caused no end of interest and comment from visitors.

A quick Google search showed this is not as unusual as might at first be thought, there are examples of nests with jewels woven through and all sorts of other decoration.

We imagine grass or feathers or both must have lined it at nesting time for mother bird’s comfort if nothing else.

I once heard this Dreaming story explaining the magpies’ colours. It seems in the Dreamtime all birds were white.

One day a huge fire was racing through the bush and the crows and magpies decided to shelter in a cave. It wasn’t big enough to all fit completely inside so the magpies went in first and all the crows were squashed at the entrance. As the fire roared through the birds were all burnt.

At the entrance the crows were burnt completely black but being a bit further inside the magpies were only partially burnt and so to this day they are black and white.

A great morning was had by all at the Maleny Commerce Networking Breakfast at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on Tuesday, July 14.

After over 11 years running Neddy’s Nosebag on Simpson Street in Beerwah, owner Lesley Wooler knows her customers well. Latest exhibition at Vianta

If you have been to the Channel Country, local artist Heather Gall’s upcoming exhibition at Vianta Arts in Simpson Street, Beerwah will make you yearn to go back for a second look; and, if you haven’t yet visited the Channel Country this exhibition will certainly make you want to head out West as soon as you can.

Heather’s series of works based on her experiences of far Western Queensland enjoy the raucous, and sometimes astonishing cacophony of colour that explodes out of the Channel Country landscape, while the subtle interplay of shape, colour and dynamic that she uses to structure her work evokes the still, almost deafening silence of the seemingly endless countryside.

As Heather says raised in the outback of Queensland, she has intuitive connection with this vast landscape.

"I am fascinated by the macro/micro design of the natural world around me as I immerse myself in the musicality and tempo of the particular landscape I am trying to portray.

“This series reflects this dynamic and rich ecosystem that changes depending on the rainfall. It is a place where everybody looks to the sky with hope and expectation.”

Flood Plains Under Big Sky will hang at Vianta - 70 Simpson Street Beerwah, from July 27 to August 29. The exhibition opens at 6.00pm on Thursday, July 30. Sometimes it’s necessary for me to step in and cut through the confusion and make sure we get the right outcome for the community. I was determined to make sure that council did all that it could to ensure that the community work programs and fundraisers at the Beerwah tip were able to continue, if that’s what the contractor and community groups wanted.

Having spoken to senior staff, our CEO and the new contractor, I am pleased to advise you that Iolar Operational Services (the new contractor in control of the site) is in final discussions with the community groups involved and everyone is moving towards achieving agreements that will see the not-forprofit community workshop activities and historical fundraising activities continue.

Commitment to council support - in respect of the workshop program, once an agreement is made, I have obtained a commitment from the CEO that Council will continue to make the existing workshop tools and equipment available for use. Council will also support and assist all concerned to understand what’s needed for the continuation of fundraising barbecues at the site.

Great reputation - through exceptional community involvement over the years, Beerwah Transfer Station (the Tip) had rightly established a reputation for innovation in recycling practices and achieved some excellent fundraising outcomes at the same time; some in council lost sight of that for a moment, but I believe we are back on track to continue that success and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the new contractor for their willing support of the community initiatives. By all working together we will maintain that reputation long into the future.

Out & About NAIDOC Week Local primary and high school students celebrated Wandiny Day as part of NAIDOC week at the Beerwah State High School last Friday.

It was organised by Aleccia Franks, the high school’s Indigenous community Advisor, with the assistance of the Indigneous Students Council.

The day was attended by Indigenous students from the surrounding Glass House Coalition of schools. The day’s program started with a Welcome to Country ceremony by local traditional owner Lyndon Davis and was followed by workshops in traditional weaving, Indigenous games and traditional painting.

Beerwah High Deputry Principal Tanya Hayden said the day was a great opportunity to celebrate our indigenous culture with primary students and parents.

Attilla Sautov and Ethnodelica in Maleny In a brief collaboration with Sydney-based musical project, Ethnodelica, world-renowned violinist, Attilla Sautov, will showcase a unique performance at the Maleny Community Centre on Saturday, August 15 at 7.00pm and Sunday, August 16 at 3.00pm.

A child prodigy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Attilla has toured internationally as a soloist with many renowned orchestras, gaining prestige in over 40 countries.

The new Australian citizen has now established himself in Brisbane, and his enormous energy and enthusiasm for sharing his musical gifts, has culminated into a fusion of his classical background with modern rock.

He will perform some of his most popular arrangements from Bach, Vivaldi and Paganini, to Michael Jackson, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.

Ethnodelica will spice up the performance with a diverse range of genres such as world, new age, folk rock, neo classical, and electronic music, blending unique instruments like the duclar, djembe and vargan, with guitars, cello and vocals.

Ethnodelica are popular in the Sydney gig scene, and are appearing only at Maleny during their short Queensland visit.

Plant sale

The GMAN nursery team would like to thank everyone who attended our recent plant sale to aid Stingless Native Bees.

Through plant sales and donations we raised $250.00 and also increased community awareness of these wonderful little creatures, which are responsible for pollination of native and exotic plant species.

It was previously advertised that the funds raised would go toward the purchase of a 3D printer to manufacture bee hives.

Since the crowd funding fell short of the target amount in the given time, it was decided instead to fund the installation of a native bee hive in the butterfly garden at the Innovation Centre at the Sunshine Coast University.

The money raised is approximately half of that required for the purchase, so donations will be accepted until the end of August to cover the amount required.

Any shortfall will be funded by Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network.

Peachester had a bushfire in the exact area in 1994. The property at 329 Range Road had a fire, approximately six years ago, which destroyed the house. The Rural fire brigade did manage to contain the fire to the property, but it could have easily jumped to the road reserve that NBN intend using.

I have given NBN a number of alternative sites which may be better options for a tower if NBN is unyielding on microwave towers for the town.

The proposed site, although not on a scenic route, will still be visible whilst travelling between Beerwah and Peachester, which is a scenic route, whereas the options I’ve suggested to them won’t impact on the scenic route.

Why NBN are insistent on putting a tower where it is prone to bushfires and will impact on scenic amenity is anyone’s guess?

New home goes completely off the grid

Ian and Judy Hall the owners of All Energy HQ of Glass House Mountains have what most people want – to give their energy company the flick … completely.

They are now the envy of anyone who doesn’t think too highly of electricity companies. Building their new four bedroom home towards the end of 2014, their plan was always to be totally off the grid by installing their own water tanks, sewerage treatment plant, solar hot water, solar system and battery storage for 24/7 power.

The house is no different to any other home being built today – energy efficient lighting, all electric kitchen including dishwasher, two fridge/freezers, air-conditioning, water tank and treatment plant pumps, TV and fans, but it is all run through their own power generation.

Ian and Judy have installed a stand-alone solar and battery system, giving them 20kW capacity and 18kWh accessible power every day. Energy from the solar panels runs directly into the batteries which are topped when the sun rises.

The battery energy is then used to run the household. At only the size of a small fridge, the batteries don’t take up much room in Ian’s garage. The lithium-ion battery storage system technology is remarkable and the manufacturer, BYD, is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of this technology.

Ian and Judy have created their concept home so others can see what can be achieved, and now they are inviting those interested to come and have a look at the concept home’s self-sufficiency systems and developments.

Electrical Cable recall The team at family run Mingleford Electrical Contractors would like to make customers aware of a major national product recall that potentially could affect thousands of Australian homes and businesses.

Late last year, Infinity electrical cables were recalled by a number of electrical retailers and wholesalers due to safety concerns with the potential of the cabling becoming a fire or electrocution risk. That recall has increased substantially to date.

It is estimated that up to 40,000 homes, commercial and residential buildings could be affected and currently there is a taskforce of consumer agencies, building and electrical safety regulators coordinating the recall.

Infinity and Olsent branded Infinity cables have failed to meet electrical safety standards due to poor quality insulation (plastic coating) that has been found to become brittle prematurely, potentially presenting a safety hazard that includes electrocution, if the insulation breaks.

While the taskforce has found that there is no immediate danger, the issue is that the cables will degrade over time, potentially presenting very real safety risks.

The risk of physical contact is highest in roof spaces and under raised floors. The taskforce has recommended that all wiring should be checked by a licensed electrician if between 2010 and 2013; a new property was purchased, renovation work was done, or any electrical work was done including appliance installation. Nutritional value of your garden!

Winter has definitely hit and with a vengeance and the reports of patches of frost have had many a gardener preparing for the freeze and up at dawn checking for frosts. Common ways to protect your garden from frost include deep mulching, keeping the soil damp which enables the soil to hold more heat, and covering with a structure of some form. Raised garden beds tend to be frost hardy due to the fact that they are up out of where cold air settles and if layered and still composting, they tend to generate their own warmth.

Talking of layers, composting and raised beds, knowing your inputs into your garden is like knowing the ingredients you put into your body. You want your food to be full of beneficial nutrients and goodness, as we all know that what we digest will influence how much we can do. The same goes for our garden ingredients, and that is why it is well worth your while sourcing quality materials when building up your patch, as it will translate into how much it can produce.

Basic nutrient analysis will give an indication of the specific elements potentially available within your ingredients; however there are other significant elements to be considered, such as carbon and compostability.

For example, granite is high in Potassium, but it won’t be available to the plant for uptake anytime soon!

Lucerne mulch hay Lucerne tops the charts for me in nutrient value and all-round goodness as a garden product and is subsequently one of the main ingredients in ‘lasagne layered’ gardens. The combination of high nitrogen, fibre, lignin and protein ensures lucerne provides an ideal balance of Carbon to Nitrogen ratio.

Mushroom compost This is a common addition to many gardens as a source of compost and bulking material. It is great as a carbon source, however it is not ideal if you are looking for loads of nutrients. Also, you need to understand that it can have salt and chemical residues from fertiliser and pesticide applications.

Home compost Probably the best addition of micro-organisms your garden can get, almost like a hit of probiotics for humans. These little guys will help release all of those nutrients locked up in your garden materials. The nutrient status of

your compost depends entirely on your inputs.

Manure When considering nutrient value, my favourite drop, so to speak, is chook manure, closely followed by sheep and horse manure. Nutrient values vary considerably depending on the animal’s diet. However, your choice is likely to be dictated by availability and not the nutrient content of the manure.

I’m very lucky to have them all generated onsite now … just need to collect it!

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship I’m writing this with my MacBook at a lookout 100m from our new place at Amamoor in the Mary Valley watching the sunrise. I can see all the way past the river to the tower on top of Mothar Mountain near Gympie.

This has been a huge week for us as a family, moving from our beloved Glass House, tough to leave so many friends, but right for our future none the less. People say a change is as good as a holiday. This change for us has certainly brought us together as a family as the kids started their first day at a new school this term.

There are as many kids in the whole school as there is in one year level at Glass House! A big change makes you focus on the important things again. The greatest thing is knowing that you’re where God wants you, doing what He wants you to do.

Glass House Mountains Community Hall- Raffle was won by Beth from Aranisari at Glass House with ticket number 14E Black dots, prize was a fruit and veggie tray.

Sunshine 60 and Better Group Inc - is a healthy ageing program providing a variety of fun activities to keep the mind and body active for older people.

They will have a presentation on Subsidised Affordable Holidays at Yeppoon on Tuesday, July 28 from 10.30am – 12.00noon. Come along and bring a friend for this informative session.

Athletics Carnival – Beerwah State School

Contributed by Elizabeth Traynor - PE teacher Before the school holidays, Beerwah State School held its annual Senior Athletics Carnival.

Students participated in High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, Discus and running events.

The days leading up to the carnival were rainy and miserable but the sun was shining brightly on the day of the carnival. All students participated in each event and had a great time.The final points at the end of the day were:Coochin 505, Blue Gum 395, Stanley 357 and Mellum 278.

The following week saw the junior students take part in the Beerwah State School Junior Carnival.

This day was also about maximum participation with all students competing in each of the different athletic events. Results for this carnival were:Coochin 743, Mellum 624, Blue Gum 546 and Stanley 507.

Thank you so much to all the parents who came along to support their child and to all the teachers who ran the events. Both days were a huge success.

Contributed by Belinda Short It was a day for Blue at the Glasshouse Horse and Pony Clubs yearly Sporting Day on July 5. Over 70 riders came to have a fun-filled day at our club. The Theme of the day was Blue, which was to raise funds for Motor Neurons Disease.

This is very close to the clubs heart as one of our members has been diagnosed with this disease.

We also held a special event, Barrel Racing, at lunch time sponsored by Grand Prix Rugs for champion and reserves champion, $154.00 was raised. Raffles raised $600.00. Super Strawberry Report Not much action yet in the Super Strawberry Competition - only one entry again for Round 3. The weather is holding fruit back, we hear! However, this was an easy win for former champion grower Oaklands Farms, with a strawberry weighing 135 grams.
