Hi Everyone...

Instead of spending Saturday night at home with Brownie glued to the television watching all of the discussion and predictions of the federal election, I headed off for a fun night at the Maleny Show Ball.

And yes, it is always fun to have the opportunity to get dressed up and be part of what is the launch of the annual show.

However, this year I was also one of the judges on the night, which I always find stressful as the entrants are always lovely, enthusiastic young people and choosing a winner seems a little harsh.

I know it is a competition and that is how it works but I always like to encourage and acknowledge each of the entrants for putting themselves out there and giving it a crack, because it can’t be easy for them.

So, congratulations to all those who entered and to the winners. You can see the story on page 4 and no doubt those of you heading to the show this year will see the girls wearing their sashes and helping out at the show on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1.

Local News Conservative through and through The Liberal-National Party candidate Andrew Wallace has been returned for a second term as Member for Fisher, after securing an increase in popularity at last weekend’s election.

At the time of printing, Mr Wallace’s vote had increased significantly from the 2016 results, gaining just over 50% of the primary vote and over 62% after preferences.

This constitutes a 3% swing for Mr Wallace, with the Australian Labor Party’s Daniel Parsell losing ground compared to the 2016 results.

This outcome signals that locals are considerably conservative with Fisher now being one of the safest seats for the Liberal/National coalition in Queensland.

Across the state, the conservative vote flourished.

Of the 30 seats in total across Queensland Labor now only holds six seats, with LNP holding 23 and Bob Katter the last.

Nationally, the Scott Morrison led Liberal/National coalition has retained government for a third term, with a majority of seats in the House of Representatives.

Locally, more people voted overall at this election than in 2016, with far fewer informal votes, suggesting that locals may have taken this election more seriously than the last.

40,523, Daniel Parsell (ALP) 18,377, Tracy Burton (Greens) 9,886, Chris Paterson (One Nat) 6,992, Trevor Gray (United Aust) 2,754, Mike Jessop (Fraser Anning) 1,314, and Paul Monaghan (Love Aust) 1,204.

Looking at each of the polling booths, Mr Wallace won all but two. Conondale and Maleny booths returned majorities to Mr Parsell, however the pre-polling returns at Maleny were in Mr Wallace’s favour.

In winning the seat, Mr Wallace was thankful to the electorate.

The member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace said the result nationwide on Saturday night was a terrific outcome for the people of the Sunshine Coast.

"It is my great privilege to again serve them as the Federal Member for Fisher. I will continue to work hard for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and for all Fisher residents, fighting for the infrastructure and the jobs of the future that we need in our community.”

Saturday night at the show ball

by Lea Parkes For many, Saturday night was spent sitting in their lounge rooms waiting to find out the results of the federal election. However, at the Maleny Show pavilion it was all about finding out who would be the 2019 Show Personalities.

The Junior Show Princess is the category for girls aged 15–17 years. Maleny Dairies’ Kimberley Bland was crowned the winner and Maleny IGA’s Bethany Lanham was the runner up.

Miss Show Girl was won by Chloe Lanham and the runner up was Sharn Phipps. This category is for women aged 18–28 years and, as locals would know, both work at Maleny IGA.

The most successful Charity Person was Jaimee Sweeting, whose very proud mum Anne Denman won the category a couple of decades ago.

This year’s Rural Ambassador was Bernadette Hodgson, who is passionate about sharing an understanding of farming with the rest of the community.

The Show Ball is traditionally the launch of the Maleny Show, which gets underway on Friday, May 31 and continues on Saturday, June 1.

If you are heading along to the show make sure you keep an eye out for the Maleny Show Personalities. You will recognise them by their sashes!

Tourism milestone celebrated For the past 10 years the Glass House Mountains Visitor and Interpretive Centre (VIC) has been operating from Settler’s Rotary Park.

Local politicians and senior staff from Visit Sunshine Coast along with many of the past and present tourism ambassadors recently came together to celebrate the important milestone event.

While the event marked the opening of the building, the real celebration was focused on acknowledging the wonderful work of the passionate team of 43 volunteer tourism ambassadors who are dedicated to the task of sharing their knowledge and love of both the Glass House Mountains and the beautiful hinterland surroundings.

Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford said the VIC’s success was made possible by the volunteers who gave their time each week.

“You would be hard pressed to find anyone who knows as much about the Glass House Mountains and surrounding hinterland townships as our volunteers,” Mr Latchford said.

“Today’s modern traveller will research a destination before they leave home but many are after word-ofmouth referrals once they arrive to help with their decision-making and that’s where our volunteers play an important role.

“Today’s 10th birthday celebration is a great way to thank our volunteers for their unwavering passion and support.

“The Glass House Mountains are one of our region’s star natural attractions and it’s important

we continue to show travellers that, yes, we have a beautiful coastline but our hinterland is just as spectacular,” Mr Latchford said.

Divisional councillor Rick Baberowksi congratulated the VIC volunteers who had welcomed thousands of visitors to the area over the past decade.

“The Glass House Mountains VIC plays a dual role,” Cr Baberowski said.

“First, providing information services to our visitors and locals to keep them well informed of the extensive range of tracks, trails, accommodation places and tourism activities.

“And second, as an interpretive centre explaining to our visitors the natural and social history including that of our Indigenous peoples.”

Court ruling for guilty driver The woman who in September 2018 caused the tragic death of well-known Glass House Mountains man, Shane Old, was sentenced in a Bundaberg Court last week.

Leona Pauline Paraha had pleaded guilty to two charges of driving without due care and attention causing the death of Shane as well as eight-year-old Olivia Douglas from the Gold Coast.

Ms Paraha was sentenced to five months’ imprisonment wholly suspended for a two-year operational period and was disqualified from holding or obtaining a licence for 12 months.

Shane will be remembered by many in the community as the lovable postie on the eastern side of Glass House Mountains for many years, as well as for his generosity to the community, often discreet and without seeking attention.

Shane also delivered the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for a decade across Glass House and Maleny, and was thought of as an essential part of the GC&M News team.

The team’s heartfelt thoughts continue to be with Shane’s partner Robyne and their family.

By Sonia Clark This year’s Maleny Agricultural Show, on Friday and Saturday, May 31-June 1, will feature some epic new experiences that will appeal to attendees of all ages.

Committee members from the Maleny Show Society have been working extra hard behind the scenes to add these exciting new attractions, including a chance to test your driving ability with an allconditions driving simulator, live performances showcasing our rural living history, an hilarious motorcycle comedy show and a chance for kids to engage in rocket science workshops.

In what will no doubt be a popular drawcard, RACQ will bring its mobile member centre semitrailer to the show, which contains two driver training simulators.

Keith Cassidy, the mobile member centre coordinator, said the simulators had been specifically designed to improve driver skills and featured a wide range of modules that allowed simulation of a variety of conditions and experiences such as driving in snow or fog.

“Kids love trying to race and more experienced drivers have the opportunity to learn something

new,” Keith said.

History will come alive with the award winning Australia’s Living History show, which will be featured both days on the entertainment oval.

Showcased at more than 500 regional shows and festivals, this interactive and informative attraction features an incredible display of historic bush settler artefacts, as well as story and yarn telling along with live demonstrations of traditional bush camp skills such as butter and rope making, and heaps more.

The Epic Darren show on Friday features a chance to enjoy funny low-key motorcycle stunts set against a super entertaining family comedy show. With a focus on providing comedy and entertainment, Epic Darren will be an hilarious highlight of the arena on Friday night.

Young engineers will discover the wonders of rockets and aerospace flight with a specially tailored children’s workshop featured over both show days.

Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

Landsborough unit development withdrawn In a surprise outcome, the controversial multiunit and rooming accommodation proposal for 37 Maleny Street in Landsborough has been axed by the developer.

On May 10, the developer – 37 Maleny Street Pty Ltd – informed Sunshine Coast Council that the application was being withdrawn and asked for a proportional refund of the application fee of $16,041.

The development was the first of its kind, bringing a different style of small living accommodation to Landsborough.

However, the Landsborough community had issues with the higher intensity living that overstepped what was allowable under the planning scheme, as well as the aesthetics such a development would present as the western entry to the town.

Many locals also voiced their apprehension about the social makeup of the residents of such a development and the specific issues this might create for the small town, as the developer would not reveal who was targeted to be accommodated in the complex.

Although this decision brings an end to this chapter another has opened for the site, with the developer lodging a new application to split the 4,703m2 land parcel into eight parcels ranging in size from 456m2 to 739m2.

The proposal sees the development progressing over two stages.

The planning report submitted to council states that the current dam will be filled in to “maximise the development potential of the site”. The report also notes that the site will be cleared of all vegetation.

The planning report contends that the proposal falls within what is allowable under the planning scheme.

This means that the application is deemed as ‘code assessable’ and, as a result, is not open to community consultation or public submissions.

Mary Garden

Maleny author Mary Garden is set to launch her latest book ‘Sundowner of the Skies’, a compelling and deeply personal memoir/biography of her father, the famous aviator Oscar Garden.

Oscar achieved notoriety in 1930 by becoming the youngest and most inexperienced pilot to fly solo from England to Australia. The book provides a significant and long overdue piece of aviation history coupled with a clear-eyed revelation of the man behind the legend. Ahead of the book launch, GC&M News caught up with Mary to find out more.

Q: Your dad was quite the aviation pioneer. Did you realise his notoriety/incredible achievements as a child growing up?

No, not really. He never spoke to us about his life, just barked orders at us. I had no idea how famous he had been in the 1930s and 1940s until I began digging for information on his life in 2005. I had read some of the articles that had been written about his flying career in magazines and newspapers but still didn’t grasp the significance of it and these articles had just skimmed the surface.

Q: What prompted you to write this extended story of your father?

In 2005, I decided to write an article about him but just focus on his solo flight from England to Australia in 1930. This longform feature was published in the centre pages of ‘The Australian Financial Review’. I honestly thought that was all I would be able to write with the information I had on hand, and also because he had died in 1997 so I had left it too late to talk to him, interview him. I was absolutely flabbergasted at the response I got to that article. Readers from all over the world, even India and Scotland, contacted me and wanted to know more. So that was the beginning of my long journey to dig up his past, and to find out why had had been forgotten and also what had happened to him in his life to make him so hard, cruel and bitter.

Q: What particular qualities do you think he possessed that allowed him to fly solo from England to Australia with such limited experience?

He was a perfectionist. He was also used to working with machines as his father had introduced the very first motor cars to the far north of Scotland in 1908. As he said, he was also quite mad! It was quite a reckless thing to do and the most dangerous flight in the world at the time, so he was also very lucky.

Q: Was it difficult to write from such a deeply personal perspective?

Not at all. I love writing from the personal perspective. Most of my feature articles draw on my personal experiences. I love true stories and memoirs and biographies.

Q: Are other book launches planned and where can readers purchase the book locally?

The book is available locally at Rosetta Books in Maleny, and in bookshops Australia-wide. They are also available online via Booktopia, Dymocks, etc. I am planning to go to New Zealand to launch it in my hometown of Tauranga at the Classic Flyers Aviation Museum, and then England and Scotland early next year. I feel like it is time for my father’s story to be told, and to get the recognition and acknowledgment that he clearly deserves. I’ve had a lot of unexpected luck in getting this project off the ground. It was as if the story had to be written and I couldn’t get on with my life until I had finished it.

Colette

This is the long overdue story of the French writer known simply as Colette. She was a meek, simple and naïve country girl who became one of the most famous and provocative French writers during the first half of the 20th century. At only 19, she marries a much older man, Henri Gauthier-Villars (known as Willy), who is an established author.

He already employs a couple of ghost writers to help him churn out books. When she begins to write down some recollections of amorous adolescent adventures he recruits her as well. Her memoir becomes ‘Claudine’ and other successful novels follow that purport to be written by Willy. Eventually she demands recognition. She also wants to enjoy the freedoms of bohemian Paris and re-define who she is.

Keira Knightley excels in portraying the transition of this remarkable and complex woman from country girl to liberated sophisticate. The film is in English.

The Maleny Singers will present Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operetta ‘The Gondoliers’ in June.

Set in Venice and the mythical Kingdom of Barataria, this story follows the fortunes of two carefree gondoliers who, ten minutes after they both marry local girls, discover one of them is King of Barataria. No one is sure which one is King. We follow the machinations of the impoverished but ambitious Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro as they search to discover the true heir, who they had secretly married to their daughter when she was six months old.

Spicing up the search are a somewhat sinister Grand Inquisitor, two new wives feeling neglected and a doomed romantic liaison between the secretly married daughter and a drummer boy.

Rotary shares the love

Tranquil Park at Maleny hosted the fifth annual Rotary Club of Maleny’s community grants presentation dinner last week. Seven local community groups were the beneficiaries of approximately $10,000 in funds for a range of projects across sports, arts, culture and recreation.

Now in its fifth year, Rotarian Angela Griffin initiated the idea in 2014 and 35 individual groups within the Maleny community have now benefited from the annual grants by around $50,000.

The initiative has also been adopted by a number of other Rotary Clubs and implemented in their communities including the Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains.

The successful Maleny organisations this year were Maleny District Girl Guides, the Maleny Swimming Club, the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary, the Range Croquet Club, the Maleny Cultural and Heritage Society, the Smart Living Society and the Friends of Pattemore House.

A number of the grants will contribute to the purchase of equipment and infrastructure and others will assist with the operational costs of service delivery of the groups.

The Maleny Swimming Club will be able to buy and install a new metre box and wiring for a new stove in their clubhouse, which will definitely be appreciated on a cold night.

The Girl Guides will purchase 23 stackable chairs for the Guide hut. Fifty stackable indoor and outdoor chairs and a trolley to move them will be purchased for events at the Historical Village, which should come in handy when the Governor of Queensland visits the open day on June 15.

Contributed by Gordon Reddek We will be holding our next working bee one week later than usual this month. It will take place on Tuesday, May 28 starting at 7.30am with knock off at about 10.30am.

At the last working bee we continued weeding in an area we planted some years Dutchman’s pipe back and will continue that work during this working bee. The photo, which shows what we are looking for, provides details of a plant called Dutchman’s pipe, a very pretty but also very invasive weed. We really should not be growing plants like this in our gardens. The seeds are easily spread into areas of natural bushland where the plant invades and destroys native habitat.

Our group offers people the opportunity to learn about native flora (and fauna) and how to recognise and control weeds. As we belong to the Sunshine Coast Council’s Community Nature Conservation Program we get great access to all of the nature conservation resources and programs the council has to offer.

We are always looking for new members, not because we want to become a big group but because the natural bushland in the area is deteriorating at an alarming rate and this is a good way to become aware of the problem and get insight into what can be done. All are welcome to join us. Participation is free and tea is served at the end of the working bee. Please come with good working boots, long pants, a long sleeved shirt and a hat. All tools, sun cream, mozzie spray, etc, is provided.

A new 22-week season of singles darts will get under way on Monday, June 24 from 7pm at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. Registration for new players is only $40 and the weekly fees are $7 a night. The format is three games a night, best of seven games.

The club is offering $2,000 in prize money at the end of the season. First prize is $500, second $300, third $200, fourth $175, fifth $150, sixth $100, seventh $75, eighth $50 and there will be $100 for the highest placed woman, $100 for highest placed second division player, $50 for highest women’s finish, $50 for highest men’s finish, $10 for highest men’s and women’s finish on each board.

The club is affiliated with Darts Queensland. Nominations close June 22.

Living - Arts Plenty of colour in red dirt exhibition Maleny Art Direct will host the opening of Vanessa Perske’s Red Dirt Exhibition on Saturday, May 25 at 4pm. The exhibition was inspired by what the artist describes as “my lap around Oz”. Vanessa is keen to encourage locals to come along to see what inspired her on her trip and to share in the wonderful sights she saw and people she met along the way.

Vanessa is a well-established, selftaught hinterland artist with many of her works and commissions in private and corporate collections throughout Australia and Internationally.

Since moving to the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Vanessa’s work has been based around nature and its complexity, and contains detail of patterns and layering with a distinctive use of intense colour.

Scenes from everyday life will catch Vanessa’s attention and her imagination is always bursting full of ideas. It is difficult for Vanessa to concentrate on anything else until she has captured it in paint.

If you can’t attend the opening, the exhibition will be on display until June 25, so make sure you pop in and take a look.

Dancers impress judges

Beerwah State High School’s very own dance company recently competed in the Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod at The Events Centre, Caloundra and took on competition from Brisbane as well as the Sunshine Coast.

The students, who rehearse four mornings and lunch times each week as well as the odd Sunday, have put in plenty of blood, sweat and tears. They came away with amazing success of first place in hip hop and contemporary, third place in jazz, fourth place in lyrical and highly commended for musical theatre.

Beerwah Dance Company coordinator Jessica Rossberg said she was “incredibly lucky to work with these students”.

“Their determination and love for one another truly astounds me. They work so hard and I can’t thank them enough.”

Next weekend May 24-26 they will compete at the Brisbane Eisteddfod, which is one of the biggest competitions in South East Queensland.

Photography exhibition

Vianta Espresso at Beerwah will host the opening of a photographic exhibition on Friday, June 7 at 6pm.

The exhibition will showcase the winning entries from the Beerwah QCWA Amateur Photography Contest 2019.

The photography contest was open to photographers who had never received financial benefit as a photographer and who engaged in photography as a pastime rather than as a profession.

The photographers could be CWA members, non-members and children aged up to 15 years.

There were 11 categories, with one category in two parts for children up to nine years and children 10-15 years.

The competition received some wonderful entries and the exhibition will be on display throughout June.

Hinterland Kids celebrate Mums Mothers’ week

Mums are so special that they have a whole week of celebrations at Glasshouse Christian College (GCC).

Prep mothers’ night was a fun time for exciting activities, photos with mum and then a delicious supper. The children couldn’t wait to show their mums what they had already learned in school.

Mother’s Day chapel was a lovely morning and the church was jam-packed.

All mums were presented with a gold or silver crown before enjoying the concert. Little Voices choir sang ‘My Mum’ and year 1 sang ‘Ten hugs a day’. Prep presented drawings of their mums and year 2 students talked about their mums and danced to ‘Happy’.

Pastor Jocelyn Carolissen was the special guest speaker and the students were delighted to see her as she left on parental leave earlier in the year.

She brought her daughter to share the stage with her.

On Thursday the GCC’s P&F held its Mother’s Day stall where there were lots of variety and price options. For many of the prep students this was their first time making a purchase without mum or dad so it was a time for serious contemplation before making final choices.

High tea for Mother’s Day

It was a great success with many mothers, grandmothers (and a few dads as well) attending this special afternoon. The students were busy all week cooking (and doing some science experiments observing changing properties of materials) to create a veritable smorgasbord of delectable treats for the special guests.

This year did not disappoint. With amazing food – all donated by our school parents - and many different teas to sample, the mums were all extremely spoilt.

This year’s twist was to bring your own unique tea cup with a prize given to the best cup.

There were so many amazing cups that organisers were forced to choose four winners – oldest cup, smallest cup, biggest cup and most unique.

The oldest cup went to Anona Mowles from Hazeldean, who brought her grandmother’s tea set that she had dated to the 19th century.

You Said It It’s disturbing

I wish to express my dismay at the number of people who are completely disregarding the ‘No entry’ signage at the start of the Mt Ngungun walking track.

As most locals know, the track is closed for May, June and July for much needed maintenance.

There is a reason for this closure. It is for public safety. Access to the summit can and will be potentially dangerous.

On the recent long weekend, there were more than 20 cars parked at the Ngungun car park around lunch time on the Sunday and again on the Monday.

The following Sunday around the same time there were more than 30 cars parked.

Not all the visitors would have been tourists to the area. What is more concerning is that many were children. Is this the example that parents are setting? How disturbing.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife even parked one of their ranger vehicles inside the barricaded off entrance to the walking track. That didn’t seem to deter the visitors.

Then, of course, if someone gets injured it is expected that the emergency services will come to their aid. And they will.

Has anyone thought that this retrieval process may present more casualties due to the state of the track?

Day out spoilt

What should have been a delightful Mother's Day lunch was totally spoilt by bad service and totally unsatisfactory food.

As a recently widowed pensioner I wanted to have my family around me on Mother’s Day and decided to take them all out for lunch locally.

I chose a venue where my husband and I had eaten in the past and enjoyed the food. There were eight of us in total and we waited an hour to get our meals delivered to the table, meals which cost me $185.

The meals were inedible, cold, over cooked or under cooked depending on the meal, things were missing from the plate and all tasteless.

I am disgusted that meals like this, which incidentally caused stomach upsets in the three people that actually tried to eat them, are allowed to be served.

When we complained we were told sorry. I don’t think that this was good enough and I respectfully suggest that they lift their game, or they will have no customers to serve.

We will certainly not repeat the experience.

Steve Duggan (GC&M News May 15) pities me and the kids that I scare with my apocalyptic projections of climate change. My 11-year-old granddaughter invited me to their last protest rally and it is clear that she is distressed not by science but by the recalcitrance of Steve and like-minded politicians. Clearly she (and Greta Thunberg) know more than Steve about the causes and outcomes of global heating.

If the ocean continues to heat the Great Barrier Reef will be destroyed. Do we give it up without a struggle? The serious threats to the GBR are global heating (bleaching) and ocean acidification, and as Steve wrote, these are largely out of Australia’s control. To save the GBR we must persuade other countries to leave fossil fuel in the ground forever. Australia will have to lead the way—there is no chance of persuading the rest of the world if we are not out in front in the drive for zero net carbon emissions.

It is a pity that deniers of anthropogenic heating do not understand the words they cut and paste from old denialist websites. Steve says that “of the 0.04%, man contributes 3%”. Wrong. Preindustrial CO2 was about 280ppm; it is now 415ppm, so we humans are responsible for 32%.

But I have to admit that Steve’s number is slightly better than Alan Jones who tried to claim it was 0.001%.

Local Eats Putters Bistro

In case you hadn’t heard, Beerwah Golf Club’s bistro is open on Wednesday and Friday nights from 5.30pm for dinner.

Wednesday night features a mid-week special of two courses of either entrée and main or main and dessert for $25 from a blackboard menu.

On Friday you can choose from a comprehensive menu of entrée, meals and desserts, which is what we did recently and I have to say everything we had and everything the table next to us had got the thumbs up.

No, we didn’t actually try any of our neighbour’s meals but they were happy to be photographed and gave their meals a ringing endorsement, which was a pretty good sign.

Although … when their desserts came out I wouldn’t have said no to a taste test as they looked great!

If you’re thinking of trying out Putters Bistro for yourself and want to take the kids or the grandkids they will be well taken care off with their own menu and each kid’s meal includes a soft drink and a bowl of ice-cream and topping.

From the churches Harold Kushner writes excellent books on practical religion. In one of his books, ‘Who Needs God’, he tells the story of a nurse who went into a hospital room one day where a teenage girl sat by the bedside of her boyfriend who was dying of cancer.

The nurse asked: “Is there anything I can do for you?� “Yeah,� replied the girl, “remind me never to love anybody this much again!�

Now, at first her words might seem a bit harsh but we need to look beyond them to the feeling they express. What she was trying to say was that she never wanted to be hurt like this again. She did not mean that in any way she regretted the joy of the love that she and the young man shared together.

All of us may wish that all of life could be filled with joy with no sense of sadness but that is not the way life is! Often the greatest joys in our lives are frequently mixed with sadness. We cannot live without joy but neither can we escape sadness.

A few weeks ago we celebrated Easter and all that the resurrection promises. As we journey through both joy and sadness it is our faith which gives us a perspective of what is happening to us. Our faith in God does not prevent the car crash – or the cancer from infecting you or someone you love.

It may not keep us from being hurt by another person’s hatefulness or the betrayal of our trust and love. It may not even keep us from making decisions that we regret later on.

But what faith does give us is a foundation - a foundation founded on God - from which we can see the different circumstances of life from a different perspective.

Cuppa for cancer Contributed by Lola Holland The Mooloolah Valley Slimmers held their Cuppa for Cancer morning tea on May 9 at the Mooloolah Hall.

As a result of the morning activities, raffles, etc, and some delicious food from our fantastic group of volunteers, they will be contributing $1500 to the Cancer Council.

The Seniors Ukulele Group once again provided some uplifting music and singing for everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s evident pleasure and much appreciation. It was a great job by everyone involved and thanks to those who made donations.

Faith is important because living in a community we have the chance to learn the meaning of community, where everyone is a person of worth, and nobody is disposable or taken for granted. We might use different names to describe it but perhaps â&#x20AC;&#x153;faithâ&#x20AC;? is the mortar that binds our community together through all the good times and all the struggles.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) will hold a free public event on loss, grief and community support for families as part of National Palliative Care Week this Thursday, May 23 at the Caloundra RSL from 10–11.30am.

The specialist palliative care team will hold a community discussion event, ‘You can’t ask that’, which will provide an opportunity to talk with professionals from a number of areas about death and dying. Discussion topics will include advance care planning, carer support, self-care, spirituality at death and palliative care in the home.

SCHHS palliative care clinical director Dr Louise Welch said it was important to have discussions with loved ones about the end of their lives and the type of care they would like to receive if they could no longer speak for themselves.

In the Garden Verge gardens get the go ahead … well to some degree

Finally, Sunshine Coast Council has ratified the rules on how people can use their street verge as an extension of their gardens.

Following the community furore after the council came down heavy on the Urban Food Street project in Buderim, forcing residents to remove unauthorised garden beds and fruit trees, council seems to have calmed down and devised some sensible rules.

By following some basic guidelines, you can now plant your verge without the need to apply for a complex permit or pay any fees.

The rules won’t suit everyone as they do limit what you can grow and where.

Adjacent to your boundary, you can grow a hedge up to 1.5m high and 80cm wide. On the verge, beds have to leave space for pathways and along the road edge, and the plants can only grow to 50cm high.

You can’t have hard edging, you can’t install irrigation systems and no fencing, paving, wire rocks or anything “dangerous”. You have to use biodegradable products – no pebbles for mulching. You can’t use any pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. You have to have the support of immediate neighbours. And you can’t stop people pinching your produce.

Growing tomatoes or fruit trees isn’t allowed. Don’t think you’ll make a hedge of them either, as council has a list of approved species and they aren’t on the hedge list.

Council has called the regulations a self-assessable system … meaning you need to obtain a copy of the guidelines and as long as you stay within them you don’t have to involve council at all.

If you want to go outside the guidelines you’ll need to apply for a permit.

Lots of verges aren’t covered under the self-assessable program. If you live on a road where the speed limit is greater than 50km/h you’ll need to apply for a permit. If you live on a single lane road … sorry no verge garden for you.

The permit application has no fee but you will have to prove that you have $2 million of public liability insurance that extends over the verge … that could make for some expensive lemons.

You really need to read up on all the guidelines and rules, and to do that it’s best to go online - www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Environment/Trees-Plantsand-Gardens/Plant-a-verge-garden - or give the council call centre a ring on 5475 7272 as they may be able to tell you where printed versions are available.

Gardening on the Edge

Gardening on the Edge (June 8-9) is the biggest and best garden trail event on the Sunshine Coast, if not the whole of Queensland.

Since 2005, the open gardens in and around the Maleny and Montville countryside have attracted thousands of locals and visitors to experience some of the best that our gardens have to offer.

The Maleny Garden Club is rightly proud of the fact that they have raised more than $130,000 for local community organisations such as the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary, Blackall Range Care, Rural Fire Brigade, Men’s Shed, SES and school chaplaincies.

The cost is a very reasonable $25 (not $20 as mentioned last week … woops, my mistake) per person to gain access to all six gardens.

There is also a free garden expo at the Maleny Showgrounds with an absolutely enormous range of plants for sale – many of which you won’t find available anywhere else locally.

It really is one of those must-not-miss events every year. I know I can’t wait to see the wonderful sights in store for us all this year.

Contributed by Miles Allen Another week of mixed weather and mixed fortunes on the green last week. We sent a team to Woodford on Wednesday and although it rained a little at the start of the day, Jim Wiedman, Joe Walters and Richard Long fought long and hard to maintain Maleny’s reputation.

It’s always good to play on a different green. Most of the greens on the Sunshine Coast are playing a little bit slower at the moment due to all the rain.

That means your bowl doesn’t turn as much and it is sometimes harder to get round those bowls that are in front of the jack. The green at Maleny is a bit faster now and it gets plenty of attention from Roy Gesch, who maintains it in peak form.

Woe betide any lost leaves or wayward weeds on the green because Roy quickly gets rid of them.

Wednesday night’s twilight bowls was moved to Thursday and the big winner was Cadburys with everyone going home with some chocolate or wine and sometimes both. Tony Yorkston and Ben Fawns excelled on the barbeque while Steve Porter was away developing his technique with the meat flipper.

Scroungers on Friday was hosted by Jim King and there were some huge scores and some close games. Dave Burgess played superb bowls to narrowly beat Doug McGufficke. Dark horse Mike Edwards won again beating Dennis Kyling and Ben Fawns in a tight game. Mo Lawrence (two wins in a row) and Steve Lawrence both won their games, so all that practise in the sunny UK is paying off for them.

The semi-finals of the men’s singles competition was played in front of a huge crowd on Saturday morning. Jim Wiedman and Miles Allen meet in the finals on Wednesday afternoon, which is a repeat of last year’s semi-final game. At this stage rain is not forecast, but we all know that can change.

Nominations are open for the open pairs and already some potentially strong teams have put their names down.

Nominations close next Wednesday and the only way to win it is to be in it.

Wallace Roy, Gillian Bradley, Bev Sockhill and Sally Adams played golf croquet. Bev and Sally won both games 7–5, 7–6. Everybody had a good time with a lot of laughing going on.

On Saturday, May 11 the first Bray Shield fixture was played. Sarah Widin and Robert Elliot travelled to Caloundra where Robert won his game against Don Smith 12–11 and Sarah convincingly beat Jan Robertson 24–9. In the doubles Delphine Willems and Don turned the tables to win 19–11. The Range won the round two games to one. Well done.

Ken played at Point Lookout club in Maryborough on Saturday and Sunday, May 11-12, losing five games out of six in the Lorraine Bray tournament.

He enjoyed all games and thanked the club for their hospitality.

Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showground from 8-10 am on Saturdays.

These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

The Wildcats were fortunate to get all their sets in despite to the rainy weather. Libby Howlett, Stacey English, Annie Stewart and Sonia Douglas played well but the Nambour Champas were just a little too strong on this occasion. There were some excellent rallies and great shots from both teams.

As we woke Sunday morning there was fog, drizzle and general gloominess. However, Witta being Witta, it cleared in time for our vets match against the other Witta team, the Wompoos.

If only it had continued to rain! They were too good, or we were too bad, but well done to the Wompoos. A great day and lots of laughter at the end as we celebrated Glenno’s significant birthday. Wonderful to have so many supporters there.

Last Sunday, May 19, saw the battle of the two Witta teams, Witta Wompoos vs Witta Wikings in the Sunshine Coast Tennis League seniors teams competition. It was particularly encouraging to see some new players on the courts with Rob Weller and Haydyn Craven joining the competition. After some very entertaining tennis the Wompoos were comfortably victorious, winning 11 sets 70 games to one set and 28 games. Highlights included the final set combination of Rob Weller and Stacey English for the Wikings being narrowly defeated by the steady tennis of Jim and Paula Cudmore in a tight tie break.

Entertaining tennis, wholesome lunch and a shout out 40th birthday call to Glenn added to a fun afternoon’s tennis.

Sport Brisbane Lions visit Hinterland Lions There was a bit of excitement last Tuesday at the Hinterland Lions AFL Club training at Landsborough when a number of the Brisbane Lions team dropped by to help out.

As part of the Brisbane Lions coaching, talent and engagement program, regional manager Paul Tresise (who locals may remember as a past president of the Hinterland Lions AFL club) organised for a group of Brisbane Lions to take the junior players through various skill development routines, as well as imparting their knowledge on how to make it to the top in AFL. Current Hinterland club president Craig Bales was thrilled to have the top level players at the ground.
