ver the years I have gone to the Maleny show quite a few times, so I figured I was fairly familiar with what it includes. But I have to say when you read through the program of all the different categories you can enter it is quite amazing.

I was also surprised to discover that since I became completely absorbed by My Kitchen Rules when it was on television, that it must have sparked my competitive streak.

As I read through the show program I found myself wondering what chance my favourite Chocolate Zucchini Brownies might have of taking out the Brownie category.

I am guessing that they will be looking for a more traditional

Local blogger shows off her kitchen skills

Australia’s most passionate foodie bloggers, together with some of the industry’s most recognisable faces, gathered last week to celebrate the grand final of the Gourmet Garden Blog off / Cook off competition – a national search to find Australia’s first blogger-come-chef – and crowning the winner.

Last Friday at the Tamarind Resort at Maleny, State champion food bloggers from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria went up against each other in a sudden death cook-off.

And among those foodie bloggers was Glass House Mountains Blogger Amanda, whose blog is called ‘Cooker and a Looker – meals, motherhood and manure’.

The competition has been run over a 12 month period, with three stages. Contestants registered in May last year and they were then sent a pack of Gourmet Garden products and then to photograph their results and put them into a blog.

to progress to stage 2 - the Cook Off at the ‘Chopping Block’ stage at the Good Food and Wine Shows in each of the states.

Amanda was one of the three successful Queensland finalists to be chosen to go to the final Cook Off, she impressed the judges with her Crispy-skinned Ocean Trout with Coriander and Wasabi Butter, potato wedges and green beans.

The challenge for the finalists was to create a signature dish, highlighting the taste, fragrance and aroma of herbs and spices.

While Amanda wasn’t victorious on the day, she said that the conference was really fun, but the cook off was nothing short of nerve wracking.

“For someone who has only been blogging for the past 12 months this was a pretty exciting opportunity for a newbie,” Amanda said.

As a busy mum to two gorgeous little ones aged one and four, and wife and business owner in Wild Horse Turf with husband Dean, Amanda decided a blog was a great way for her to do something that gave her a bit of ‘me time’.

With the following Amanda’s Blog has generated and having been recognised as one of the Top 100 Bloggers for 2013, clearly there are a lot of others out there that appreciate sharing her daily adventures.

And just in case you think Amanda has tickets on herself as a ‘Looker’ she clarifies it on her blog as the ‘Looking after’ she does of her girls.

The collection expanded out into sporting equipment, school materials, clothes and many other items.

So many items in fact, that Valmai and Colin recently set out with five huge bags of donations to take over and distribute in Seaside.

Valmai said luckily Air Vanuatu came on board with helping them with some of thier excess luggage.

They waived some of the weight and thanks to the lovely people who donated cash, that all went towards paying for the balance, she said.

“The headmaster Damien and site manager Amos suggested that we give them the sporting equipment and about three quarters of the school books, pens, pencils, textas to the school and the rest be shared around with the other local villages,” Colin said.

“We drove around the island where there are lots of small villages, probably around 15 - 20, they have less than Seaside school.

What was left over we gave to the Seaside village people,” he said.

“The second-hand laptop donated by Community Recycling we gave to Joe Pakoa LUI who looks after special needs children at the school.

“All the thongs, clothing, and reading books donated by the very generous public we thank you, these went to the other villages.

“Without the help of the Glasshouse Country News the message would not have gotten out there for donations and drop off points, also Smileys Jewellers and Wembley Hardware for offering to be drop off points.

International success for Neville

Glass House Mountains artist, Neville Field, has been selected among artists from around the world to exhibit in the Hong Kong Graphic Arts Festival.

His selected linoprint, titled Havana Jazz Trio, is printed on Fabriano paper, which is manufactured in Fabriano, Italy, where fine art paper has been made since the 13th century.

Neville’s prints have been well travelled recently. Some of his works

are in the permanent collection in the Brooklyn Art Museum, New York, and he has a print showing in San Francisco in July this year and in New York in September.

Another work, that featured in the ‘Compact Print’s’ exhibition in Townsville last year, is on tour through some of the 21 countries from which artists participated.

It’s in New Zealand now and then heads to Singapore and North America. The tour will continue through 2014.

Liz’s efforts rewarded Liz Layt, a tireless worker for the RSL recently was awarded life Membership of the RSL Women’s Auxiliary. She was presented with her certificate and badge by RSL Qld South Eastern District President, Andy Kilgour.

Liz is a member of the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub Branch as well as being President of the local RSL Womens Auxiliary and a co delegate to the South East District for the Sub Branch.

Together with her Husband Nev (a Life Member of the RSL) they spend countless hours in support of the RSL and Auxiliary.

Last stand for coastal koalas Last Saturday, a crowd of around 150 concerned locals and other Sunshine Coast supporters gathered to voice their fears that the last surviving koalas close to Caloundra, and other vulnerable wildlife, will be lost forever.

They gathered in the rest area next to Daisy’s Place at Glenview, in response to the State Governments plans to destroy 24 hectares of prime koala habitat in order to construct a new Caloundra Road – Steve Irwin Way – Bruce Highway interchange or what protestors have dubbed the ‘spaghetti junction’.

The rally, organised by the Save the Iconic Steve Irwin Forest group and supported by the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) and Sunshine Coast Koala Wildlife Rescue, was a call to action for everyone who is concerned about protecting our local wildlife.

Ray Chambers from Sunshine Coast Koala Wildlife Rescue has met with Mark McArdle, Member for Caloundra and presented him with an alternative road plan.

“The design I’ve shown him means that not one tree needs to be removed as part of the interchange upgrade,” Ray told the crowd.

“This year we lost the last koala in Caloundra – they’re all now extinct. We’re at the stage right now, that in your lifetime we’re going to lose the koala. And this here is Caloundra’s last safe haven for the local koalas.

“It’s got to be saved if we want to save the koala,” Ray passionately told the gathering.

Narelle McCarthy from SCEC said that the group wasn’t anti-development or against improving road transport – but some rational decisions must be made to make sure we don’t lose what it is that makes our landscape so special.

“And it’s not just the environmental impacts of clearing 25 hectares of koala habitat, but the loss of our aesthetic greenspaces,” she said.

At the Sunshine Council meeting to be held this Thursday, May 23 in the Nambour council chambers, a report is being presented on the possibilities for a ‘difficult to locate’ sports precinct which may have dire implications on our local koala populations.

The report resulted from a notified motion at the March 28 General Meeting, raised by Cr Greg Rogerson and amended by Cr Rick Baberowski.

The amended motion asked the Chief Executive Officer to bring to Council a report on the policy position and available options and locations for a difficult to locate sports precinct (i.e. noisy sports).

At the time, Cr Rogerson suggested to GCNews that an area of State Forest behind the Mooloolah Cemetery on Steve Irwin Way at Glenview was prime real estate for such a facility, and specifically identified motor sports as his preferred usage option.

This area is also identified as significant remnant koala habitat, as well as being home to many other under-threat wildlife and adjoins an area of koala habitat forest which will be destroyed to make way for the new Caloundra Road interchange.

Unfortunately, Council have chosen to hide the results of the report from the community by designating it as ‘confidential’ under the Local Government Regulation 2012. This means locals concerned about the possible threat to even more local koala habitat won’t be able to see what the Council staff have proposed.

Beerwah State School’s 125th Anniversary

On June 8, Mark McArdle MP, Minister for Energy and Water Supply, will be joined by past Principals Max Butler, Alan Shaw and Owen Marks, and other representatives of Education Queensland and many returning students, staff and parents to celebrate the school’s long history of service to Education in the Beerwah area.

Past students and visitors will be able to register their attendance from 11.00am at the Centenary Hall with the official 125th Anniversary ceremony being held from 12.00noon.

This will be followed at 1.00pm by the fantastic Beerwah Big Night Out school fete.

There will be great entertainment featuring rides, food, stalls, special tours of the school and Beerwah State School student choirs and Instrumental Music bands.

The community is also getting involved with live bands, ‘Super Dads’ and ‘Bitter and Twisted’, guitar soloist Anna Renwick, dance groups from ‘AusFunk’ and Beerwah State High School, as well as martial arts groups and the Citroen Car Club.

The fireworks, which this year have been sponsored by Woodlands, are always popular and will be going off at the earlier time of 7.00pm.

This will bring the celebrations to a spectacular conclusion. A reminder that ride armbands can be pre-purchased up until June 5 and will also be available for purchase on the day.

Local areas to get NBN sooner Get ready for 21st century communication capabilities, as the high speed National Broadband Network connections are on the way to Glasshouse Country, according to the NBN Co. They recently announced that, within the next three years, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Bells Creek, Glass House Mountains, Landsborough and Peachester will start to be connected.

A long list of other suburbs and towns are also on the list across the Sunshine Coast.

Households in some nearby locations – such as Currimundi, Buddina, Meridan Plains, Kawana, Minyama, Warana and Wurtulla – will be able to hook up to the high-speed optic fibre network before the end of 2014.

Sunshine Coast Council’s Economic Development portfolio councillor Stephen Robinson says it is fantastic news, as many people on the Coast have been wondering when this long-promised service would arrive.

“It’s great news that a whole host of Coast areas will start to be connected within the next three years,” he said.

As a critical infrastructure project for the region, the NBN rollout has the potential to provide enormous economic and social benefits, council’s Broadband and Digital Economy Manager Michael Whereat said.

“It is expected that at any one time the fibre build will employ more than 100 local people, involved in a range of activities from installing fibre to traffic management,” he said.

“As it becomes available, council will share further specifics regarding the NBN including information as the build commences in your area: what impacts it will have on your street as it is being installed; and information for local contractors.”

Lavally Lodge hosts Monster Bookfest

Last week I called in to Lavally Lodge at Glass House Mountains and dropped off a couple of bags of books for the upcoming Monster Bookfest to be held on July 13 in Caloundra.

I was warmly welcomed and had the chance to meet up with five of the 10 residents who live there.

It is refreshing to meet a group of people who have such an enthusiasm for life and the opportunities they have.

Each of the residents has an intellectual disability, however they all lead busy and full lives, some doing volunteer work, some doing paid work and others being involved in a range of different activities each day.

Lavally Lodge, provides accommodation and 24 hour support to 10 people with intellectual disability and is an initiative of the Caloundra Catholic Parish.

Coordinator Mary Crase, said while there are no rules or regulations at Lavally Lodge, the emphasis is on mutual respect.

Queensland’s Governor recognises our Bernard Early this year GCNews bought you the story about Bernard Verwayen of Mooloolah who was awarded an OAM in the Australia Day Awards 2013, for services to Veterans and their families.

It was a very proud day also for the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub Branch, where Bernie and his team deliver their pension / welfare services to Veterans, both old and young.

Earlier this month, Bernard and his wife Anita travelled to Government House for the formal presentation of his Order of Australia Medal.

Bernard was one of two people who received their awards from the Governor of Queensland, Penelope Wensley. Bernard said it was a wonderful honour for all concerned.

“We found the Governor to be very warm and approachable,” he said.

The ceremony was followed by a lunch for 100 people given by the Queensland Branch of the Order of Australia Association at the St Lucia Golf Club.

Mountain rescue season has started

Glass House Country SES report by Dave Erbacher Shortly after 3.00pm on Sunday, May 19, the Glass House Country SES Group was called to assist with a climber who had fallen on Mt Beerwah. Two 30-year-old men had climbed Mt Beerwah (despite the tourist track being closed for some considerable time) and were almost back at the base when Jason slipped and fell approximately 20 metres fracturing both leg bones just above the ankle of his left leg.

His friend called for emergency assistance and paramedics, Brad and Paul based at Kawana attended.

The SES crew arrived with a suitable stretcher and together with several other climbers / members

of the public carried Jason out to the waiting ambulance arriving at approximately 5.00pm.

He was conveyed to the Nambour Hospital.

Despite the climbing track up Mount Beerwah being closed, there were several other parties of climbers in the vicinity.

Group Leader Robert Barry said that the climbing season appears to be in full swing now that the cooler weather has arrived. On Saturday, May 11, a 72-year-male was assisted after a fall from Chicken rock on Mt Tibrogargan and on Sunday, May 12, a 40-year-old Caloundra woman received serious head injuries when she fell 30 metres whilst climbing the closed Mt Coonowrin.

He thanked the crew of Ross, Graeme, Brett, Tarra, Louise, Tim and Dave for their efforts.

Contributed by Jenny Morris Glasshouse Country View Club As I approached Kym’s house for our morning of word games and puzzles all I could hear was the laughter of the ladies in readiness for the challenges. This was a great atmosphere to begin the morning. On Wednesday, May 1, 20 of our ladies enjoyed a very tasty devonshire tea with scones being baked by a few of our champion cooks. The games were organised by Janet and Kym which included a crossword created very cleverly by Kym. All winners and losers received a prize. Our raffle was won by Tricia who became a member on the day.

We thank Kym for welcoming the ladies to her lovely home and garden for an enjoyable, if not challenging morning.

The Glasshouse Country Debutante Ball organisers are hopeful that there are still a few young ladies out there that missed the first registration session for this year’s Deb Ball to be held on September 7.

There will be an afternoon registration session held between 4.00pm – 5.00 pm, on Wednesday, May 29 at the Mary McKillop Centre, Beerwah.

The QCWA focuses its international efforts in the South Pacific area. This year, we are collecting items to make up classroom stationery kits for kids in Fiji, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. The stationery will be packed into A4 copy paper cartons and sent over with the assistance of Rotary International in December.

We would like to call on the kind people of this district to contribute items to fill these boxes. The schools on these islands are so appreciative of your assistance. The stationery we are seeking should be clean items only (preferably new) including: 500 sheets A4 paper, A4 cardboard, small pieces of card, soft lead pencils, sharpeners, erasers, coloured pencils, felt pens, crayons, pens, chalk, wooden rulers, child’s craft scissors, glue, paper clips, small bulldog clips, storage bags.

Coral Beutel (Hon President) On April 27 we held the last part of the cooking competition with Joan winning three firsts and two seconds. Bev three firsts, one second and Cath two firsts and two seconds. Congratulations ladies. These cakes etc were then sold at our very successful markets. On May 2, was the Photography and Crochet and Knitting competition with Gordon receiving four firsts and four seconds, Margaret two firsts, one second, Cath two firsts and one second, and Coral one first and two seconds. Thanks to Gary our judge, Cath won five firsts and Bev two seconds. These competitions are open to anyone who wishes to enter. They start again in the new year. On Monday, May 6, eight members attended a Mother’s Day luncheon at 'Collectables' Peachester. What a delightful setting, delicious food and giving staff. On Thursday we catered for a council workshop in the Peachester Hall.

With our international day with Beerwah to be held on May 28 and the Cancer morning tea on June 3, we are quite busy. I also presented a book 'From the outback to the sea' by Norma Lovelace depicting the 90 years of C.W.A in Queensland, this was to commentate ANZAC Day to Peachester State School.

Our mothers day raffle has been drawn with Debbie from Collectables 1st prize and Emily from Bribie Island 2nd. Thank you to all who patronised this raffle and helped in any way.

Well with Mother’s Day done and dusted for 2013, the Beerwah High Chaplaincy and the Super Dads band are now full speed ahead organising a wonderful family event for Father’s Day to be held at Skippy Park at Landsborough.

Already Community Recycling Inc has agreed to be a major sponsor of the day. Glasshouse Country News is also getting behind the fellas enthusiasm to make it a great event and will keep everyone posted on how things are moving ahead.

For those of you who aren’t aware of the Super Dads – they are a local band that describes themselves as being passionate about loving their wives, hanging out with their kids and making good music!

Band member Mike Turner said, “we thought organising an event on Father’s Day with some great awesome entertainment and cool activities is a perfect way for dads and their kids to enjoy the special day together.”

“Over the next few months, we will be approaching a range of groups within our local community that we hope will want to get involved in the event – and as more details of the day are confirmed we will let everyone know,” Mike said.

Toni Childs at the Musos

It was a special day for the Glasshouse Musos this last Sunday, not just being Mother’s Day and so great to play for all the mum’s out there, but also for the range of fantastic performers who graced our stage. Aside from our regular regulars – who one can never thank enough for playing for us week after week, nor the fantastic regular audience - for just being there, but also we have our occasional regulars, who this week included Karen Law, Memphis and Tommy Leonard.

Karen was joined by her two primary school age children Murray and Hazel and what talent we enjoyed! Karen is a fine singer guitarist / song writer and with young son Murray playing some very accomplished licks on guitar and backing vocals and even younger daughter Hazel on vocals. It was a most impressive family set. Someone even inquired as to whether Murray is giving lessons!

In his set, Memphis featured fiddler Meye, up from Victoria and a fine addition she was to his swampy blues sound. Imagine Bob Dylan in the days of Scarlet Rivera and it was nothing like that, but it is ‘ball park’.

Tommy Leonard is a veritable walking encyclopedia of music of the past 50 years as he draws comfortably on classic pop to little known but exquisite folk numbers, playing from memory, and performing each with a commitment rarely heard amongst the best of musicians.

His stentorian vocal and inimitable finger style guitar playing is a feature of his performance. What a wonderful asset he is to our events!

A very special guest turned up as the last act for the day and that was Toni Childs. It was one of those chance moments – her car broke down, she came in to enjoy the beautiful coffee and hospitality of the cafe, and drawn in by the aroma of the music, asked if she could do a set. Paul, Doug and I had the pleasure of accompanying her in a few bluesy numbers, and I had the distinction of being assured - verse after verse, how ‘bad’ I was as I wailed on the harmonica inspired by her phenomenal voice. Music is the most stunning of levellers and with a great voice in front of them, backing musicians rise to the occasion. Paul delivered some searing guitar lines and Doug as always played the most tasteful of bass, to end this most special of Musos Club events.

And a big thank you to Steve at the Coffee and Tea Merchants for rushing through his extensions in time for the day. Even with the extra seating it was standing room only and is now an even more attractive venue. If you haven’t been there do drop in there for a coffee and cake at some point. You won’t be disappointed.

What’s wrong with people?

Recently my battery in my car died, I didn’t know who to call to help me out. I didn’t know how I was going to get it started again. The last time it died I had to buy a battery and carry it back to my car while the battery acid leaked out all down my side. Thinking it was sealed, it wasn’t, and then I fitted it myself, at that stage I was a woman on my own and over 50 years of age.

I don’t ask people for help anymore, they fill themselves with entitlement, more than their entitled to.

As for buying a battery, thank you to Mountain Electrical who have a service, who took less than 30 minutes, who trusted a local resident of nearly 20 years to get to the bank, after all I’m not going anywhere. So if you’re a local resident and a woman especially over 60 now, need help with mechanical work or a battery, I highly recommend the wonderful people at Mountain Electrical, the staff were all polite and nice people. So thank you again and again.

You could be psychic and know exactly when your battery is going to die, so you could be cashed up ready but I’m not.

So thank you for your customer service. Greatly appreciated – Mountain Electrical.

The Mooloolah Valley Slimmers group recently hosted a Cuppa for Cancer at the Mooloolah Public Hall on Thursday, May 9. We would like to say a big thank-you to all who attended as we all had a wonderful morning full of cuppas, food and entertainment. Morning tea was provided by the members of the Mooloolah Valley Slimmers club, stall holders donated services on the day and items for raffles.

Five of our members strutted their stuff on the catwalk in various outfits put together by our local Vicious Vintage store. We had a total of 14 raffle prizes each to the approximate value of $100.00.

The Vegan Warriors are campaigning against the use of 1080 poisoning on wild dogs in Australia due to the overwhelming evidence that not only does it kill native animals but it is the most excruciatingly painful way to die due to the 30 hours it takes to kill. These ‘wild dogs’

are dingoes and are native animals, not pests.

Farmers have taken their homes, in turn taken their prey and complain that they are killing their animals. Farming animals for food is proven to be totally unsustainable.

Do the research; it is shameful that we continue to deny that all other animals, apart from our pets are ours to use and torture for our selfishness and greed.

Farmers need to look at other ways of earning a living - our region is being closely watched due to our thousands of supporters worldwide and is now being recognised as one that enthusiastically promotes and endorses animal cruelty across the board with our council proudly handing the perpetrators their tools of murder...something left out of the Sunshine Coast Destinations marketing but those that truly love animals are vowing to avoid visiting here until we start making real changes for a kinder region for all animals.

For many years I have had a problem with my shoulder, whenever I try and do something, my shoulder becomes quite painful. I had read in the Glasshouse Country News about the healing day that is run at the Neighbourhood Centre in Glass House Mountains. I went there to see what happens. The healer worked on my shoulder and I feel much better. I think they offer a good service for our community.

Mosaic art in Glass House

There’s a special place in Glass House that I like to visit when I’m in town.

It’s a little bit hidden from public view but it’s been specially designed and installed by local artists for locals and visitors to experience and enjoy. I’m talking about the community art project that’s adjacent to the post office in Turner Street, off Bruce Parade. It’s almost too well hidden between the park and the community hall and if you haven’t discovered it yet, I certainly recommend going to have a look.

It’s a well-executed example of public art that’s playful, functional and visually attractive.

There are fantastic colourful mosaic chairs that really brighten up the area and a large vibrant mosaic mural on the ground nearby.

I like the accompanying mosaic coffee table that has a built-in games board that you can play a game of chess or draughts on (if you remember to bring your own playing pieces along).

Nearby you’ll see some fun and creative ceramic totems that neatly decorate the area. I like that this project brought together professional artists to mentor and encourage local artists interested in producing public art. It’s a really good example of public art adding value to the look and feel of community spaces and it would be great to see more outdoor installations like this into the future.

The current round of Regional Arts Development Fund applications are open until June 1 and the grants have a focus on skill development for local artists. If you’re interested in finding out more about grants for local artists look for RADF on council’s website.

The Glasshouse Mountains Visitor and Interpretive Centre celebrated its fourth Birthday on Thursday, May 9.

From humble beginnings in the caravan at Matthew Flinders Park to our purpose built centre, the volunteers here have many a tale to tell. Rain, hail or shine these volunteers would be out spreading the word on the Glasshouse Mountains. Although some things have changed, a lot has remained the same, these volunteers still give their continued support and time to help visitors and locals alike to enjoy our peace of paradise.

Kids learn about the post office

School News Beerwah High’s Production ‘WWW…’ Beerwah High’s show, ‘WWW…’ means lights, camera and action in more ways than one this year!

“The multi-arts expo presented us with the opportunity to create something completely different,” said Debbie Holland, one of the show’s directors.

“Many contemporary productions have an emphasis on technology so we decided to incorporate film, Google, Youtube and Facebook into the artistic performance.”

The evening kicks off with canapés prepared by the Hospitality students and served under the trees. Once inside, the audience will be treated to a wide variety of musical, vocal, dance and dramatic items.

A highlight will be the one act play, ‘Over The Wall,’ a cleverly scripted piece allowing each actor to tackle several roles.

Tickets are available at cash collection in the administration block at school, $15.00 includes pre-show food and a drink as well as sweets and a hot beverage at interval. Set aside Thusrsday, May 23, or Friday, May 24 for an exciting night’s entertainment.

The children at Landsborough Child Care Centre were out and about in their local community last Wednesday.

They enjoyed an excursion to the Landsborough Post Office, where they were shown through the post office, bought some stamps and were taught how letters were sorted and sent.

They even got to meet Postman Michael! The children made their own picture and sent it to their home address, so now they will be eagerly waiting for the mail to be delivered.

Kitchen classes in full swing Beerburrum State School students have had a busy start to the year in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden. After such a dry summer and then a very wet start to the school year, the students have had a lot of hard work to do in the garden which supplies food for our school kitchen. The kitchen classes are in full swing with amazing dishes being produced and then consumed each week.

Walking to and from school will be safer for children and parents at Beerburrum State School, as they are one of 27 schools to benefit from flashing traffic lights before the end of the financial year.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said he was delighted that the Department of Transport and Main Roads had approved these lights as it would increase the safety benefits for our area.

“Kids and traffic can be a dangerous mix and these lights will be another reminder to drivers to slow down around schools.

“Children can be hard to see and may not be concentrating around their mates before or after school, so this will be an important extra safety measure.”

Mr Powell reminded motorists to take care near school zones and to stick to the lower speed limits.

“School zones are all clearly signed so avoid getting a fine and stick to the speed limit,” he said.

Winter Warmers Hi everyone

Each year in mid May we always include a Winter Warmers feature as a way of reminding locals that it is time to start planning for winter – a nice little gentle reminder.

However it would seem that after last week’s weather, most of us won’t need any kind of reminder as we didn’t seem to get the chance to ease into winter.

So the arrival of winter has definitely come a couple of weeks early and my suggestion is don’t waste any time in getting some lovely new carpet for that bit of warmth underfoot.

Having lived mostly with timber floors (which I love) I reckon there are just some parts of the house that really need carpet – getting up in the middle of the night and planting your tootsies on the cold hard surface just isn’t the best option for me.

Rural Fire Service Day

The inaugural Rural Fire Service Day on Saturday, June 1 aims to increase community awareness of the role of the Queensland Rural Fire Service.

Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Service First Officer, Steve Rook said they will use the day to provide fire education, recruit new members, fundraise, and showcase the diversity of roles brigade members take on.

The Open Day will be at the Fire Station in Ryan Street, Glass House Mountains (near the Post Office) from 9.00am to 2.00pm.

During this time, fire fighters will be on hand to provide advice on such topics as: bushfire survival (Prepare .Act. Survive), permit requirements for lighting fires and smoke alarms.

“We will also have all our equipment on show and will demonstrate its use throughout the day,” he said. “There will also be a sausage sizzle and lucky dip for the kids. This will be our first chance to ‘show off’ our new training room as well (although it’s not yet fully completed!), with videos being played at various times and a small amount of the Brigade’s history on show. Thelie Hobbs Suncoast Church Hinterland When my children were little, I had a neighbour friend who lived down the street from us. She and her husband had a ‘change-of-life’ baby in their 50’s. Betty was a truly beautiful soul, a little bit quaint, and always grateful for a countless variety of things in her life which she shared often. My neighbour couldn't drive, so as our children went to the same school; I offered to take her daughter to school with my kids.

For the next three years when I would drop her daughter off outside their front gate, without fail - EVERY single day, she would stand at the gate with her daughter and wave goodbye with the same phrase: “Thank you, I’m grateful!.” I’ve not thought about her for some years until recently.

Last week I was in hospital and on the day I was being released; a tiny lady in the opposite bed was handed the worst possible verdict - there was nothing more they could do for her.

I cried for her and her family’s sad news. It’s all too easy to complain about the challenges we face in our lives, but how many people would

Yet again this year I was impressed with the number of community groups who submitted nominations for volunteers that work within their organisation. We know that many of our community groups and schools simply wouldn’t survive without the efforts of people who volunteer their time to do everything from caring for animals, cooking sausages on a barbecue or doing the bookwork behind the scenes. We had a great afternoon at the Sports Club and I thank everyone who came along to join these celebrations. Of course a huge thank you must go to Lea from Glasshouse Country News for her excellent work as the MC of the event – she did it all in her usual professional style and made the gathering even more special.

Following the successful Mackay Summit, attendees finalised six questions that will now be put to the community to gauge your views and opinions on Queensland’s vision 30 years from now. The Caloundra electorate was well represented at the recent Queensland Plan Summit in Mackay with delegates Trish Cashin and Leanne Layfield deliberating the State’s future alongside more than 400 other representatives.

Participants from all walks of life are being encouraged to get involved with the Queensland Plan project which will see a strategy formulated to guide the state during the next 30 years.

Following the summit, all MPs will take the following six questions back to their electorates and invite residents to respond.

The questions decided on are: In the context of living in the community, how do we move our focus from me to we?

How do we create and foster an education culture that teaches skills and values to meet global challenges and optimises regional strengths?

How do we empower and educate individuals, communities and institutions to embrace responsibility for an active and healthy lifestyle?

How do we structure our economy to ensure our children inherit a resilient future?

How do we strengthen our economic future and achieve sustainable landscapes?

How do we attract and retain the brightest minds and ideas where they are most needed and capitalise on global opportunities?

The next stage is engagement and that’s where the public comes in, I’m encouraging residents to come forward and voice their opinion to help put together a great map for the next 30 years.

Those responses will then be considered at a summit in Brisbane in early October before the final Queensland Plan is unveiled at the end of the year.

War On Weeds a great success

Contributed by Roger Callen Coochin Creek Bushland Group took part in SCC's ‘War on Weeds’ with great success. A record turn up of over 90 people brought their bags of weeds for identification and took away three native plants each.

Council stalwarts Rhonda Martin and Greg Strain ferried people into our distribution site near the rockholes at Emma Park, Beerwah, distributed plants and identified weeds, ably assisted by Rhys Meyers and six other members from our group.

We distributed over 180 plants and showcased our recent plantings by the rock holes.

Thanks to Peter Kluver, Rhys Meyers and Barry Hutson who helped make the day a success by distributing flyers and information prior to the event and GCNews for their advertising support. Several persons expressed an interest in joining our merry band of weeders and planters on the third Friday morning of each month.

Several of us arrived at 8.30am and removed lantana and weeds and planted a third batch of several hundred plants around the rockholes.

On Sunday, two of us will be taking part in council's survey (run by their enthusiastic Connor Jenkins) of the rare Glossy Black Cockatoo which feeds only on specific Sheoak cones and only lays one egg every two years.

The real benefit of interest rate cuts The interest rate cuts of the past year, if fully utilised, could potentially save mortgage holders more than $90,000 in home loan interest and take nearly seven years off their loan term.

A series of interest rate cuts since March 2012 has seen the official cash rate reduce by 1.50%, with banks passing on about 1.35% of this, according to Smartline Mortgage Adviser Teresa Harrison.

Therefore, if you had a 30-year, $300,000 home loan at 6.70% back in March last year, you’re probably now paying around 5.35%.

However, if you maintained your repayments at $1936, you could potentially save yourself more than $92,170 in interest and take eight years off your home loan.

You end up paying about $210,917 in interest over the life of the home loan, rather than about $303,087, so you’re paying about 30% less in interest.

While this scenario assumes that the interest rate stays at 5.35% for the life of the loan, which isn’t likely, it does illustrate the power of making

extra repayments off your home loan, whatever the interest rate may be.

It’s all about good habits and discipline, according to Teresa.“If you’ve been used to making those repayments at that higher rate, it should then be reasonably painless to continue to keep them at that same level,” she said.

“Chances are most people won’t even miss the money and the benefits of not touching that money now for a major long-term benefit should outweigh any pain.

“You’re effectively giving yourself $92,170 of future lifestyle – money you can use to do something significant with

Cameron Taylor, Instructor from the San Taekwondo Club in Beerwah and Maleny travelled to New Zealand as a member of the Australian taekwondo team in early May where he won silver against the top players from the Asia-Pacific.

Cameron won five out of six fights through the heats and then won the semi-final. In the final he was matched against a very experienced opponent who is currently ranked number 39th in the world for the division and has competed at a number of commonwealth and world championships.

Cameron built a 7- 0 lead early in the fight and held the lead until the last 10 seconds of the fight when unfortunately he lost by two points.

Division 1 winner was Mavis Brimelow with a Nett score of 72, closely followed by Cathy Stone on 73 Nett. Margaret Goodger won Division 2 with a 75 Nett from Pat Plowman on 77 Nett. NTP's went to Keithia Thompson on 2, Lyn Steele on 5, Viki Bartel on 16 and Lea Garner took out the 18th.

Contributed by Frank Doonan We had a big day of games at the grounds this weekend with teams playing all day. The Under 13’s girls had a great win over Nambour-Yandina winning 1 - 0 with Lia scoring the only goal in the second half. The girls defence was excellent and they dominated most of the match.

The Under 15 girls also came away with a win with the whole team putting in a marvelous effort. Bribie was really giving our girls some hard competition then Shaylee’s goal sparked them into action. Cecily and Courtney then scored a goal each which helped them to good hard fought win. Congratulations to Madeline for her man of the match effort, she had a big game.

Memorial. Chris played soccer for both Beegee’s and Nambour -Yandina clubs and was tragically killed in a car accident some years ago. To honour him, his family donate a trophy every year. This year, Nambour were the proud winners in this contest winning 2-1. It was a hard fought game and our boys are improving each week.

Next week we only have a hand full of games to be played, as it is a make up week for games that have been missed due to rain. But on Friday night, our senior women are playing at home so come down and support them. The ladies are doing our club proud again like they do every year, so come down to the club, grab a meal and support the ladies 8.15pm start.
