Hi Everyone...

Well, I know that as we get older we say each year that time seems to have sped up, but I think with Easter being so early the year does seem to have flown by.

So yes, as the school holidays are once again upon us, we have included our regular Boredom Busters feature, to give parents and grandparents plenty of ideas of low cost ways to enjoy the holidays.

As usual there are some great activities on, particular the program at the Rainforest Discovery Centre at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and at both our local libraries.

This week we have also included photos of some of the elements in the new park at Glass House Mountains, taken at the park’s official opening last Friday, along with some photos of the revamped Beerwah Library that reopened on Monday, which may serve as some inspiration for places to visit during the holidays.

So this edition is all about the kids, and next week we will be focusing on the parents, with plenty of inspiration for doing some work around your home over Easter with our Home and Garden feature!

The family and friends of former Peachester and Beerwah resident Nessie Pratten came together on Friday March 9 at the Gregson and Weight Chapel at Caloundra to celebrate Nessie’s 98 and a half years of life.

There were a couple of very clear themes in the tributes to Nessie, one being the importance of family, and the significant role she played during her life as a mother of five, grandmother to twelve and great grandmother to eleven.

Her other love was her garden and gardening, so it was not surprising to learn that Nessie was a founding member of Peachester Garden Club and a proud Life Member.

Until the age of 96 she still hosted garden club meetings and walked members around her garden and shared a few secret gardening tips.

She was an inspiration to many of the local community with her continued involvement in the Peachester CWA, the Peachester History

Committee and the Uniting Church, with many members of all of the organisations attending the service.

Peachester Garden Club shared their thoughts on their Facebook with the comment that “most of the garden club members past and present have cuttings from Nessie’s garden growing in their gardens and we will treasure them with the love of gardening and friendship that Nessie shared with us”.

District Park officially opened Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe was joined by Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson and local Councillor Rick Baberowski to officially open the Glass House Mountains District Park last week.

Mr Hinchliffe said the eight-hectare park in its spectacular natural setting was a great example of why the Palaszczuk Government supported councils and communities to provide great places for residents to come together.

The $1 million dollar park was funded to the tune of $400,000 from the State Government and $600,000 from Sunshine Coast Council.

It features a barbeque shelter, places to sit and rest, picnic areas, a playground, a dog off leash area, amenities building and viewing areas to overlook lakes and waterways and Mount Tibrogargan.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said the community master planned park would provide a spacious, safe and enjoyable recreation area for the local community and visitors.

“This is a park designed by the community that protects the natural assets of the park along with creating a destination for visitors to enjoy,” Mr Jamieson said.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said: “This part of the region has an increasing number of young families and is also an important tourist destination.

“The area needed a wonderful mixed space like this one to help us showcase our unique natural environment and it’s fantastic to see these great new parkland facilities being added now.”

Former owners of the land, Gloria and Gordon Lawrie, who originally started liaising with council back in 2012, were at the official opening and were really pleased with the valuable community asset that council has created with the space.

‘Flavours of the Farm’ coming to Maleny Show

by Sonia Clark This year the Maleny Show Society will be showcasing an exciting new initiative called ‘Flavours of the Farm’ which will focus on locally produced food, and the farmers and families who grow, nurture and create it.

Over the last few years showgoers have flocked to the Small Farmers’ tent and, as interest in the benefits of ‘farm to plate’ and locally produced food continues to grow, ‘Flavours of the Farm’ should prove a popular addition to this year’s event.

The initiative has been developed by local producers, Sue Menkens of Maleny Black Angus Beef and Belinda Foreman of Black Oak Farm, who realised that the Maleny Show provided an excellent opportunity to showcase the incredible produce and innovative agribusiness of the region.

“Belinda and I met through the Sunshine Coast Food and Agribusiness Network (FAN) organisation and we are passionate about encouraging the public to engage with our region’s small producers,” Sue said.

“We want people to know they can buy ‘real food’ direct from producers, which not only supports local families but tastes amazing.”

It is envisaged that ‘Flavours of the Farm’ will attract a number of Sunshine Coast producers to showcase their products in a market place setting located near the Small Farmers’ tent.

Sue and her family from Maleny Black Angus Beef This will provide a dedicated area highlighting our region’s small producers, and plans are underway for these producers to also present a series of talks in the Small Farmers’ tent.

“We are really excited for locals to discover the fantastic tastes and flavours created by our farm producers and look forward to people enjoying our locally produced products,” Sue said.

As more people are becoming aware of the numerous benefits of homegrown/locally produced food, ‘Flavours of the Farm’ should provide an exciting drawcard for visitors at the 2018 Maleny Show which runs on Friday June 1 and Saturday June 2. Being vigilant against scammers

By Lea Parkes Recently I heard a horror story from a local resident where she and her husband would have been scammed almost $10,000, if not for the swift thinking and action by bank staff in Beerwah.

The Beerwah local was so concerned about how easily they had nearly been duped, that she was keen for me to share their story and warn others about being vigilant, and not becoming easy targets.

The scam was established via a phone call when the wife was out, at the time the husband had been dealing with some technical problems with their computer.

This proved timely for the scammer who advised the husband that they had detected problems with his computer.

Unwittingly the husband was caught up in the scam, which was based on a series of coincidences that seemed plausible.

The interaction ultimately saw the wife going to their bank to take out a large amount of cash that was to be delivered to the scammers. Fortunately the bank staff realised that something wasn’t quite right and they stepped in to call the police for assistance.

After hearing the story I caught up with Senior Constable Susan Lowndes at the Beerwah Police Station to discuss how often this type of activity is happening in our local community.

Susan said that quite often people are embarrassed so they don’t always report the incidents, but she did confirm that every couple of months they would have locals ringing or dropping in to discuss a range of cybercrime scams that they have been the victim of.

Senior Constable Lowndes said it was important for people to be aware of some really basic traps to avoid, such as: Microsoft or any other computer company will never ‘cold call’ to report a problem with your computer; your bank will never send you an email that requires you to follow a link or an email to get your account details (as if they are your bank they already have this information); and you are only ever emailed a traffic infringement notice if you have agreed to receive them in this way.

“If people become victims of cybercrime we recommend that they report it directly with ACORN, the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network, a national online system that allows the public to record such incidences. They can also provide advice to help people recognise and avoid common types of cybercrime,” she said.

Following two weeks with a ‘Pop Up’ library at Beerwah and plenty of secret activity going on inside the library, last Monday morning the doors were once again open to the public.

Not surprisingly, Cr Baberowski was one of the first visitors to the refurbished library with its new layout. Gone are the structured rows of books, replaced by a more natural placement of shelves and seating, with plenty of curves and interesting nooks and spaces having been created.

Cr Baberowski said that while most locals are aware of the outstanding location and design the building has, now the new interior ‘Discovery layout’ matches the feel, doing so much more than housing a great collection of books.

Water park feature for zoo Good neighbours become good friends?

Construction has begun on a brand new water play area at Australia Zoo, which will be ecofriendly with specially designed recycled water components.

The area will include spectacular native wildlife sculptures, designed by Australia Zoo artists, for visitors to cool off in.

This will be an above-ground water adventure, designed for keeping even the youngest guests safe and happy.

It will include an enormous laughing frog that will tip immense amounts of water after you hear him start croaking as well as a giant squirting kookaburra, and a huge water bubbling crocodile.

The development, which will roll out through 2018, will also feature additional dining options and even private cabanas.

By Lea Parkes Yes, the heading includes some very corny words from the theme song to television soap Neighbours, but in some cases it is actually reality.

You may not be aware that this Sunday, March 25, is officially Neighbour Day? Which gives you a great excuse to take some time out and be a good neighbour. It can be as simple as having a chat in the front yard, letting them know that you are there if they need you, or inviting them over for a cuppa or planning a neighbourhood gettogether.

We know that throughout our community there are plenty of people that already do this and one great example is the annual street parties/get together that the residents of Stephenson Court in Beerwah have been holding early in the year for the past 11 years.

Just before Christmas, GC&M News included a photo of an impromptu barbeque (and informal debrief) they held on the Sunday following the dramatic storm that tore through the area damaging a number of properties and knocking out their power.

While not all of the residents had been able to return to their homes in time for the annual January event, another street party went ahead, and the group have now decided to increase how often they host them.

Co-ordinator of the street parties, Renee Leitch, is really proud of how successful the events are, and she recently told me about how one of the

This family friendly event is the brainchild of local resident Tracy Mackle who wanted to give local sporting groups the opportunity to share with community members the exciting range of activities available locally.

Tracey said: “We want to encourage a greater connection with our local sports community and the expo will be a great way for local residents to find out more about what sports are available locally in a relaxed environment.

“We’ve had really positive feedback from the community and a fantastic response from our local businesses and organisations committing to the event,” Tracy said.

Regular readers of GC&M News will no doubt already be aware of the Lions Clubs of Mooloolah Valley, Maleny Blackall Range and Beerwah and the great work that they do locally, nationally and internationally.

Pattemore House open Easter Saturday

Pattemore House (Fairview) in Maleny is open on the last Saturday of each month from 1pm-4pm. So, what could be a nicer way to spend a relaxing Saturday afternoon than to take the family and have afternoon tea on the verandah and experience some of Maleny’s pioneer past?

The home was built in 1907 and is made from white beech pit-sawn on the property by the four Pattemore brothers for their parents.

Please note that the opening date was incorrectly mentioned in GC&M News as Saturday March 24, which was an error.

The second Lamplight Tour of Bankfoot House will take place on March 25. The house will be open from 4.30pm on, with the last tour starting at 7.30pm. The Lamplight Tours held by the Friends on the last Sunday in February were a big success, with over a dozen visitors touring the house and joining the volunteers for a friendly drink on the verandah at dusk.

This year Bankfoot House will celebrate its sesquicentenary on October 14. Over the years of continuous occupation, many family members have kept newspapers with interesting articles and photographs. One of the newspapers in the collection is the Brisbane Courier dated 17 November 1926, which includes a contemporaneous photograph of the first Bankfoot House.

This original house was built in 1868 on logs laid on the ground. Of weatherboard construction, with a shingle roof and a brick chimney, it was a simple rectangle with a covered verandah along the front.

By 1930 this building had deteriorated to a degree and it was demolished, but useable timber was recycled and used in extensions to the newer house behind it, built in 1878. The 1878 house forms the core of the present house.

An old photograph in the Bankfoot House collection from the time when both houses were in existence – 1878 to 1930 – shows a window in the gable of the 1878 house.

However, there are no stairs within the dwelling that would give access to the upper level. This was a mystery to the Friends until Ethel Burgess explained that the gable or attic of the house consisted of a bedroom used by her father and uncle as boys and young men when the house was overflowing with people.

How did they get up there? “By ladder from the outside, and they climbed in the window,” Ethel said.

The cupboards are bare at Beerburrum State School, but not for long!

The school will be celebrating its 100th year on Sunday April 22, 2018 and wishes to fill three new glass display cabinets that have been generously donated by the local company, Bassett Barks.

The Centenary committee is seeking items from the school’s past, such as old school work books, progress reports, writing implements, medallions, certificates, old uniforms and programs for special events.

Leadership development program Beerwah State High School’s junior leadership team spent an exhausting but very rewarding two days at the Sunday Creek Outdoor Education Centre as part of their development program.

The team bonded and have come back to school full of ideas and energy, ready to make it a better place for all.

Children’s author visits local school Contributed by Vanessa McKellar Brisbane author and champion storyteller Samantha Wheeler recently visited Glasshouse Christian College to lead a series of workshops for upper primary students.

Ms Wheeler shared her passion for animals and the environment, where she finds her inspiration and how she creates tension in her stories, challenging her characters and their problem solving skills.

Her ideas and experiences ignited the students’ imaginations and encouraged them to consider how they can make a difference in their world.

Selected students took part in a ‘Breakout Writing Session’ and every student in Year 3 to 6 participated in a persuasive or narrative workshop.

Ms Wheeler has written five novels including ‘Smooch & Rose’, ‘Spud & Charli’, ‘Mister Cassowary’ and ‘Wombat Warriors’ and has won numerous awards for her work.

Dancing to the beat of their own drums The distinct sounds of an African drum emanated from the Beerwah Kindy last week as the children danced and sang along with Nathaniel from Rhythm Culture.

Each of the children had the opportunity to play instruments, including shakers made from seed pods and grass, but the highlight of the day was the energetic drumming circle where they had their own drums to beat on.

The passion for African music radiated from Nathaniel and it sure was contagious.

You Said It NBN Failures Three and a half years of advocating that NBN does not know what they are doing, and our critiques of their process, their so-called “genuine” public consultation attempts in our communities and their non-productive public meetings, indicate that NBN is looking like a total failure as a broadband supplier. The Towerless NBN for Maleny group has stated all this from the beginning.

You just have to look at any newspaper or media outlet today to see the constant stream of complaints, the records of shockingly poor quality work and the endless delays on NBN connections and the poor internet speed results. NBN is now a classic ‘White Elephant’.

As the ABC says, “Lauded in the 2009 Commonwealth budget as the single largest nation building infrastructure project in Australian history, the NBN is at risk of becoming an expensive white elephant in our cities. Years of political interference, poor technology decisions and a monopoly business attitude have damaged the brand.” (ABC News, 1/3/2018).

The results of the objection process to four major Development Applications (DAs) in our communities show the cynicism about NBN and opposition to NBN right here.

As your article in GC&M News 28/2/18 says about the results of a DA process, “NBN tower plans raise plenty of concerns”. The numbers of objections to a tower in Conondale raised 180 letters, in Peachester it raised 274 objections, and Sinclairs Lane, Maleny had 194 objections.

And Burgess Avenue in Maleny attracted 73 objections.

This is a resounding result for the region’s dislike for the tower options here and it seems to be the largest number of objections ever raised against NBN towers anywhere on the Sunshine Coast.

It’s National Ride2School Day and an opportunity to give our children the gift of fun and freedom that comes with riding a bike.

Of concern, only one in five Queensland kids currently ride to school, compared to four in five in the 1970s. While the world has changed drastically since then, and riding to school isn’t always easy, it’s well worth the effort.

There are a multiplicity of benefits that come with bike riding – it’s a chance to bond, to build resilience, and to nurture their independence as they navigate the world.

It’s also a great way to establish lifelong habits that promote health and physical activity, as well as giving kids space to experience gratitude for the great outdoors and our natural heritage.

Maleny Film Society's next offering is the French drama Sage Femme (The Midwife) starring the wonderful Catherine Deneuve as Beatrice and delightful Catherine Frot as Claire, the eponymous midwife.

Claire is a dependable, upright member of society whose world is thrown into chaos by two events. The first is the imminent closure of her midwifery unit to be replaced by a high-tech modern facility where she has no wish to work.

Then her father dies and his despised free-spirited mistress Beatrice returns, throwing herself on Claire's mercy because she is homeless and dying of cancer.

Sugary drinks a recipe for disaster It's no secret that we shouldn't be drinking sugary drinks. As more and more research investigates the ill effects of regular consumption of soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks and cordials, it may be time for you to give it up, or at least reduce the amount you consume on a daily or weekly basis.

Contributed by Gweneth Brooks In spite of the blustery, inclement weather there was a very good attendance for the meeting on March 8. (My apologies for the incorrect date in my last contribution. It would appear that there was a problem with my calculations. We hold our meeting on the second and fourth weeks of each month, and I hadn’t realised that March 1 was a Thursday.)

The group were given the topic of ‘Is there a solution to the overuse of all drugs in today’s society?’ The topic provided a good challenge and learning opportunity for the members.

Chelsea, with great earnestness and passion, expressed her opinion from a very youthful point of view in today’s society and at the end of the meeting was acknowledged as ‘Toastmaster’ for the day.

Our next meeting is definitely on this Thursday, March 22, commencing at 9am for a 9.15am start at the meeting room at Church on the Rise, in Beerwah Parade, Beerwah.

With the holiday season coming to an end the pace of life just seems to increase. This time of year, we are at full speed with school, work, university, sport and volunteer commitments consuming the calendar. That restful summer and time with family seems like a dream of the distance past. The rhythm of life we can get ourselves caught in can wear us down emotionally, physically and spiritually.

Having a musical background, I am reminded that music is comprised of rhythm, melody and harmony. All these elements make a variety of sounds and songs, but a particular element places a big part in music: rest. Rest is the use of silence, when no noise is played by a musical instrument that provides space between melody, harmony and rhythm. Often our lives are like

The Bible talks about rest by using the term Sabbath. This Sabbath is a 24-hour time period of rest to engage with community, family and grow your physical, emotional and spiritual health. The Sabbath provides a rhythm to your week that allows you to focus on what really matters in your life. Take the time to slow down weekly through the busyness of this season of the year. Applying rest to your rhythm of life is going to make your life song even more beautiful. Mark 2:27-28 states that the Sabbath is made for man and that Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. Take the rest Jesus offers and enjoy the blessings he wants to give you by just slowing down this week.

Vines for Peachester group

Hello Brownie, I would like to let you know that we have Birdwing caterpillars on our butterfly vine this year!!

I have never seen the butterflies flying. We did find a dead one years ago on the forest floor. We are thrilled to see the caterpillars back as we had been told they would not be in our area as it had been too dry. We bought our vines from GMAN but have propagated more to spread them through our forest.

We live on the side of a Ngungun on 1.5 acres. We have a creek that flows when the quarry overflows; this is always an interesting change to the garden.

I really wanted to share with you our great caterpillar find and wonder if other gardeners are finding them as well.

Chloe even sent me a video of a butterfly fluttering about one of her vines… they are such a colourful sight.

I’m acutely jealous, as my vines have been untouched for almost 10 years now… but as I live a little closer to the coast (Palmview), I suspect we’re in an area just outside where they would normally venture.

The good butterfly season seems to be widespread as well, as there are reports from people up and down the Coast of having seen butterflies and finding caterpillars in areas where they’ve not been seen before (or for many years)… like Pomona and Eerwah Vale. Even closer to home, a resident at Mooloolah reported to the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network Facebook page that, after 26 years of planting vines, they had their first butterfly this season.

So there’s hope for me – and the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly species – yet.

Contributed by Ted Prickett David Matthews, Chairman of the Brisbane Valley Kilcoy Landcare Group, recently passed on 30 Richmond Birdwing Vines to the Friends of Cahill's Scrub for planting in the Cahill's Scrub Reserve at their March working bee.

Some will also be planted on surrounding properties.

Since this vine planting program started some years ago, there has been an increase in the sightings of these beautiful and vulnerable butterflies in the area.

The Friends of Cahill's Scrub meet monthly, usually on the last Saturday, however this month the working bee will be held this Saturday, March 24, to avoid Easter.

It would be great to see more volunteers to our group, particularly local Peachester residents.

Bigger is Better

One of the great generalisations that we’ve been told about native plants is that small tubestock make better trees when planted. This might be true for our very fast-growing Eucalypts, Wattle Trees and some of the rainforest pioneers, but for many of our rainforest trees a bigger potted plant will increase survival and rate of growth. For years on our property we have been mainly using megatube stock for our rainforest plantings and these have given great results. We are also now producing rainforest plants in a four litre pot, which enables us to get a big sun hardened plant to between 750-1250mm … instant rainforest, almost!

One hurdle we’ve had in the past in growing advanced stock is not liking the traditional shallow round pots or bags for growing trees, as they encourage poor root development through root coiling. The four litre pots and megatubes we use for growing our trees are deep, square and ridged on the inside to help produce better root systems. The range of plants we have in these larger pots is growing all the time (pardon the pun) and at the moment includes the following and many more – NSW Waratah, Celery Wood, Blueberry Ash, Small Kurrajong, Herbert River Cherry, Hakea and Native Coral Tree.

Sport Maleny Bowls Club

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker On Sunday, it was too wet to play. A break in the weather on Saturday morning allowed a short practice session before the monthly club meeting. Be warned that in lieu of play because of wet weather, Donna Manning and Kath Smith have cleaned out the shed. You won’t know your way around it when you next venture in. Be careful to wipe your feet.

Thursday’s balmy weather and freshly mown lawns saw a great turnout. The Bray team were conspicuous in their desire to have a good hit out. On lawn 1 Sarah Widin 15 defeated her doubles partner Priscilla Vickers 8. On the same lawn, Helen Andrews and Sally Adams

7 got up in a hard-fought tactical game against Frances Harper and Bev Sockhill 5. Meanwhile, on lawn 2, Donna Manning and Kath Smith easily accounted for Nick Cram and Ken Barker crunching them 13 – 8. The afternoon was also a social success with tea and cake taken beside lawn 1 halfway through the session.

Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds.

Brisbane Lions to visit Glasshouse Hinterland Lions Brisbane Lions stars Dayne Zorko and Ryan Lester will visit the Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Club on Tuesday March 27.

The fellas will be on hand to take the kids through some drills and also answer any questions they have about AFL. The local club is also inviting boys and girls up to 16 years of age, who are not club members but are interested in learning more about the great game of AFL, to come along to the ‘Come

and Try’ session between 4pm and 5pm on the same day.

This is an opportunity to come and meet the coaches who will provide the kids with a skills session so that they can learn the act of kicking, marking, bouncing and handballing, just like they do in the AFL & AFLW. This week was a big week for the bowls club as it saw us have our bar renovations start. By the end of the week the inside of the club house was gutted ready for the refit which will commence on Wednesday and run for approximately a week.

Thanks to all of our members and visitors for your understanding in the minor interruptions to some games and reduced trading.

Thanks to the flexibility of our volunteer bar staff and demolition team the club has been kept running for the bowls community with a few cancellations.

When finished it will be like a big Easter present to the whole community, thanks to our funding grants and bowls club funds this is a great venture for the future use by all of the community of Maleny.

Contributed by David Hayes Monday March 12: March Ladies Financial Day. We welcomed 10 visiting teams from Bongaree, Bribie Island, Caboolture Lakes, Kilcoy, Narangba, Pelican Waters, Solander Lakes, Woodford, Woombye and Val’s team with only 4 teams from Glasshouse competing. It was wonderful to have you all, and finally play some bowls, even if the weather was a bit fickle so we had an early finish. Winner of the day with the highest margin was Solander Lakes, and runner up with the 2nd highest margin was Bongaree, mystery prize went to Narangba.

Wednesday March 13: Ladies Jackpot with 10 teams playing for the prize money for the day.

First prize went to the lowest winning margin which was Millie Freshwater, Eileen Pierce and Wendy Platt. Second lowest winning margin was Dennis Hume, Jack Timm and Di Hume. Mystery prize was won by Noelle Dean, Chris Dougan and Warren Blackbourne. The $600 Jackpot prize was not won again when the -18 number rolled out. So $600 is up for grabs in April, so put your teams in now. Breakfast tray won by Noelle Dean.

Unfortunately business bowls and the kids from Beerwah High had to be cancelled.

Thursday March 14: Social Bowls: We finally got to play! Winners of the day with the highest winning margin were Trevor Dennis and Warren Blackbourne with 2 wins + 14 in the 2nd game.

Runners up on a 3-way countback with the smallest winning margin was Brian Saunders and Simon Richter with + 1 in the 2nd game. Lucky draw went to Ron Rix and Graham Nicholson.

Saturday March 16: Hinterland Ladies, Palmwoods vs Glasshouse 1 away. The triples team had a great win 22-17 with the pairs going down by 3, overall a win to Glasshouse. Well done ladies.

Mapleton vs Glasshouse 2 away, a loss on both rinks for the Glasshouse Ladies.

Men Palmwoods vs Glasshouse away, Palmwoods were too strong winning 3 rinks to 1, with great work by Grant Podmore and Warren Blackbourne winning the 3 bowl pairs.

Men’s Pairs nominations close this Thursday with the Men’s 4s nominations now open. Remember to fill in a nomination form and give it to the Games Director to process.

Monday monthly 2 bowl triples starts on April 23. Support will be appreciated so start get your teams together. It’s usually a great day with teams from other clubs also taking part.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails fought off the rain and did eventually finish all 8 sets. Unfortunately we went down to Maroochydore TT’s 46 to 26. Thanks to players Suzie, Gerry, Janet and Claire.

The Wildcats played hard against Coolum with some very tight sets resulting. This time Coolum were just a little too strong. Player of the day would have to go to Stacey who put in a fantastic effort to win 3 of her 4 sets. A great day of tennis, laughs and sportsmanship, thanks girls.

Finally a perfect day for tennis and the Witta Whistlers travelled to Ballinger and had a great match. Ballinger Breezers were winners on the day 5 sets to 3, 40 games to 27. The Whistlers players were Brenda, Donna, Liz and Maree.

Beerwah Golf Club Men and Medley results Contributed by Roger Bonhomme Only 30 players braved the sloppy conditions last Wednesday. To make matters worse for some, golf carts were banned to allow a little more time for the course to recover from the ‘shortcutters’ who previously ignored the ‘keep to paths’ rule.

Geoff Carson (hcp 15) headed the one grade field with 37 points followed by Rob Eccles (13) on 36, a point up on Greg Smith (18). NTP: 2 – Robert Gore, 5 – Paul Stephen, 16 – Graham Rimmer, 18 – Rob Eccles.

On Saturday the Club held a mixed and nonmixed 2BBB Stableford to celebrate St Patrick's Day. Many players dressed themselves and their equipment in green and spoke with dreadful Irish accents! A new form of computer scoring was also tried – nearer the old single card per pair system – which unfortunately led to a lot of confusion. As late as Sunday afternoon assistant pro Vicky Uweland was working hard to sort out the problems.

Subject to confirmation, the non-mixed was won by Willett / Bartlett on 47 by a point from Verkade / Hudson with Minns / Haycroft a shot behind in third. In the mixed, Glen Humphries (Bribie) and Jo Malone won with 47 points, three up on the consistent pairing of Nev Rowley / Sue Woolway with greens director Col Penney and Hope Hannah third on 43.

NTP: Mixed 2 – Marie Goyder, 5 – Duane Wrest, 16 – Jo Malone, 18 – Col Penney.

Non-mixed 2 – Kris Minns, 5 – Lindsay Bartel, 16 – Darole Evans, 18 – Craig Russell.
