ast week I went along to the Maleny Lions Youth of the Year event held at the Orangery at Maleny and was totally impressed with the professionalism of the students involved. Each of the Maleny High students, Esmi, Rosie, Chantelle and Cory, had gone through a rigorous process of personal interviews with the judging panel, as well as two, two minute impromptu speeches, as well as a five minute prepared speech on meaningful topics. The speeches were given to a full room, almost 100 Lions members and guests, a scenario that I imagine many much older people would have found quite daunting. I found the students' responses to one of the impromptu topics about social media really interesting, with two of the four students saying that they weren’t on social media and didn’t believe it was a good thing. I have to say I definitely enjoyed the opportunity to listen to the students, and see the passion they had for their topics and the effort they had gone to in preparing for the night – very inspiring! At last week’s Council meeting a report highlighting the need for urgent repairs to the only main thoroughfare through Glass House Mountains was tabled. It would seem that after enquiries made to Council by Andrew Powell, State Member for Glass House, on behalf of a resident concerned with the safety of the aging bridge, Council approached Main Roads and Railways to ask them to do something about it. But in a surprise twist, both government agencies told Council the same story … it was out of their hands as the bridge belongs to Council. According to the report presented at the Council meeting last week, in 1987 the old Landsborough Shire Council accepted what they thought was merely the responsibility for the maintenance of the road surface over the bridge. But it seems that the devil was in the detail. The agreement also included – by default – the entire bridge infrastructure, meaning that the bridge was missing from Council’s asset register and – even more worryingly – absent from their safety inspection program. It appears that no safety audit has been done since the handover. Council organised a specialist bridge inspection company to assess the condition of the Burgess Street bridge. The results weren’t good. “Overall Condition State 4 (very poor condition)”
was the outcome, instigating the need for immediate remedial works to ensure the bridge remains safe and usable. The levels don’t get any lower than ‘Condition State 4’. After protracted negotiations between the three sides, Council has finally accepted that the bridge was entirely their responsibility and so they would need to fund the urgent repairs. The Council report identified the need for urgent structural repairs costing $40,000. However, the entire bridge needs repairs to return it to a sound state, totalling $118,200. In what appears to be an effort to save money, Council have decided that all the repair works aren’t entirely necessary as, at some undefined time into the future, the bridge would be made obsolete when the railway duplication occurs. Although the auditor’s report suggests that there is no immediate likelihood of the bridge collapsing, they did highlight that that the damage “… represents a high risk to Sunshine Coast Regional Council, with regards to its current serviceability, structural integrity and performance”. The report also identified that the bridge will be closed during the repair works, and possibly closed for a few days afterwards. But that “… alternate sealed road access is available for vehicles to detour around the site”. Stay tuned for future stories on how difficult that will actually be for local residents and road users.

Peachester local, Harold Ulrick, recently celebrated his 100th birthday with a lunch at the Beerwah Hotel on Saturday, February 18. Around 35 friends and family including guests from interstate joined in the birthday celebrations, with a number of locals also dropping in to pass on their good wishes. Harold Richard (Dick) Ulrick was born on February 18, 1917 at Eumundi. At 13 he planted his very first patch of bananas and developed farming skills that he would return to as an adult. At the age of 24 he joined the army as a transport driver and served in the Army Regiment, 2nd 15 Battalion 9th Division. He served continuous full time war service in The Australian Imperial Force until his discharge in December 1945. During this time he met a young lass named Eileen and they went on to marry in September 1946 and had three children together – Sandra, Patricia and Richard. Following discharge from the army, Harold bought land along the Peachester range and returned to banana farming. Harold and Eileen remained on the range until their retirement in 1984 when they moved to Brunswick Heads. Sadly Harold lost Eileen in

2011 and so in 2014 he decided to move back to live with family in Peachester. Another great passion in Harold’s life is his appreciation of Bundaberg Rum and his family believe that even if he is not the oldest drinker in the country of the spirit he is definitely the most loyal! Harold remembers that in the 1930s he was able to purchase Draught Bundy from the keg for eight shillings, or the labeled Bundaberg Rum for 10 shillings, at either the Commercial Hotel or the Imperial Hotel in Eumundi. During his time in the army he served in the Middle East and Borneo and Papua New Guinea. He proudly served his country – with his only real disappointment while posted overseas being that they only got the “occasional case” of Bundy! Harold now has eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren and loves to keep his family entertained with stories and spend time with his great granddaughters Zara and Reghan.

Governor of Queensland opens Rainforest Discovery Centre The new, world-class Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Rainforest Discovery Centre at Maleny is now open for visitors to enjoy after being officially opened by Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey last week. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson hailed the new centre, which offers spectacular views of the heritage listed Glass House Mountains, as one of the most impressive buildings in the region. The Rainforest Discovery Centre sits at the heart of the building. This innovative, inspiring and engaging place of discovery for visitors of all ages is enhanced by its breathtaking rainforest surroundings. The space will incorporate a combination of traditional interactive displays, multi-sensory experiences and exhibits that will be changed seasonally to encourage repeat visitation.
Highlights of the Rainforest Discovery Centre include: • a night-time immersive experience featuring scenic elements, projection and audio features • various discovery nooks coupled with large scale, vivid graphics • newly-created augmented reality interactive displays • audio interactive including a 'compose-your own' forest soundtrack featuring sounds unique to the reserve which visitors can post directly to social media • a movie pod showcasing an original film with on-location footage. The spectacular elevated boardwalk snakes 150m through the rainforest, beginning on the ground level and weaving its way up to where people can enter into the first floor of the Rainforest Discovery Centre.

An outdoor learning facility includes tiered seating which will be used for wildlife, reptile and critter presentations. The café, which will open for service from midMarch, has ceilings featuring recycled timber from the old café and the walls will be clad in New Guinea Rosewood and Glass House stone. It includes a commercial kitchen, cool room, indoor and outdoor seating and a fireplace. A maintenance and storage shed houses a fire pump and services and provides vehicle storage. The Cairncross Theatrette is an extension of the Rainforest Discovery Centre for practical workshops and audiovisual displays. There are also offices and amenities to accommodate the council staff, researchers and the 85 wonderful volunteers. The total project cost was $4.7 million. It included $319,000 of gold coin donations, $30,000 from the Friends of Mary Cairncross, council’s contribution of $3.51 million and $1 million in funding from the Queensland Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

International Women’s Day Zonta’s special event Zonta Blackall Range will be joining Zonta clubs throughout the world on March 8 to mark International Women’s Day, celebrated in the Zonta World as Rose Day. The Zonta yellow rose is the club’s symbol of peace and harmony. Some clubs, like Blackall Range, will be using the day to announce a Woman of Achievement for 2017. The local club initiated this award in 2016 to honour a woman from the Hinterland who had made significant contributions to her community. The first award went to Pamela Marsden of Maleny, a popular winner who had given many years voluntary service in several organisations. Once again a sub-committee of the club has been organising a function they call ‘Dusk on the Deck’ to be held on Wednesday, March 8 from 5.30 to 7pm, on the deck of the Maleny Community Centre. This year’s coordinator, Ann Koenig, said, “Once again this year we have a woman who has given many years’ service to people in our community and will be a worthy recipient. The prize, in accordance with our traditions, is a growing yellow rose in a pot with a plaque, as well as a certificate she could frame. “The event, ‘Dusk on the Deck’, is our annual gift to the community we serve and we look to for support. Entry and finger food are free, as are orange juice and water; and the Community Centre bar will be open for alcoholic drinks. There is a lift to the deck for those who would rather not climb the stairs.

Glass House to become Tibrogargan The Queensland Redistribution Commission has released its proposal for the reconfiguration of the State’s electoral boundaries. Major changes across all areas of Queensland are proposed, with the current 89 seats being increased by four to 93. Dramatic increases and changes in population densities and distributions across the State since the previous review took place in 2008 have meant some major amendments to electoral boundaries. In considering the new boundaries, the Commission averaged the number of voters in the State over the 93 electorates, coming up with a figure to aim for of 33,168 voters per electorate – with a 10% plus or minus tolerance. The Commission then worked to keep localities within a single electorate where practicable, thereby avoiding suburbs being split between one or multiple electorates. Names of electorates were also looked at, with the Commission aiming to move away from township-based names, and using local indigenous references instead. On the Sunshine Coast, a new electorate has been created in the Coolum region called ‘Ninderry’, making a total of eight electorates. As a result, all existing electorates have had changes – some significant – to the orientation of their boundaries. The Commission has utilised highways, local council boundaries and suburb boundaries, wherever practical, in an effort to keep communities together and create strong boundaries.

Students wow at Lions Youth of the Year event Can you imagine 99 people attending a dinner to listen to four grade 12 students speak? This is exactly what happened when members of the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range and their guests attended this year’s Maleny Blackall Range Lions Youth of the Year event last week. The four enthusiastic Maleny State High School students who took up the challenge were Rosie Martin, Chantelle Boziecevic, Esmi Doonon and Cory May. On the night they completed two, two minute impromptu speeches as well as their five minute prepared speeches. Personal interviews were conducted on the previous weekend where 80 of 110 points had previously been awarded and on Tuesday, the gala night at The Orangery on Cairncross Corner, the event attracted a huge crowd. Everyone responded to the new concept and restaurant, enjoying the speeches, great food and
even greater camaraderie. Last year, after a falling number of entrants forced the Club to rethink their methods of enticing entrants from the local high school, the committee formed for the express purpose to update and document methods and ideas, came up with a $1,000.00 youth achievement bursary for the overall winner and a $200.00 bursary for the public speaking winner if a different person. The bursaries were named for their Charter President Roger Jackson, who is now in his 80s and suffers with ailing health. Esmi Doonon, who spoke on the topic of ‘Killer Entertainment’, was the Youth of the Year winner of the night and went home with a giant cheque for $1000.00, and Rosie Martin who spoke about Australia’s adoption crisis was the winner of the Public Speaking category and received a cheque for $200.00.

This bursary offered for the first time, coupled with a presentation by last year’s winner (who was partially funded by the Club on Youth Exchange to New Zealand at the previous dinner meeting), and a new restaurant meeting place, brought the Club members and partners out in force and promises a great future for the quest in their area.

Contributed by Helen Jakeman (Secretary) Since re-forming over 25 years ago our Brigade hasn’t, until now, experienced a fire season that extends to fighting large fires in February. As a result our volunteers have been kept very busy attending the recent fires at Coolum, Sippy Downs, Roys Road and Bells Creek as well as our local call outs. Thanks to our members who have been available to attend and I am sure the community appreciate all our volunteers, not only the Landsborough Rural Brigade, but all the surrounding Rural Fire Brigades – great job everyone. We often received requests about joining the Brigade and new members are always welcome. If you have the time, live locally and would like to join our Brigade to become a volunteer rural fire fighter or you would like more information about being a volunteer, we will be holding an Open Training Night on Tuesday, March 7 at the Landsborough Rural Fire Station, starting with a barbeque at 7.00pm. This is a great opportunity to come along, find out more information and, if interested, join our Brigade. This will then give us plenty of time to put new members through their training before our hazard reduction burning season begins and then our fire season later in the year. As well as attending fires over the last month we have also been out and about in the community. Firstly there was a Sausage Sizzle at Landsborough IGA where our brigade was presented with a $423.00 Community Chest Cheque – thank you Landsborough IGA. Then, on the weekend of February 11 and 12, we volunteered as Check Point Marshalls at the Queensland State Triathalon Titles held at Ewen Maddock Dam. Thank you to the local community who continuously support our brigade.

Pomodoras on Obi in Maleny will be hosting a special High Tea on Monday, March 13 as a fundraiser for ‘Sands Australia’ in loving memory of all babies born sleeping and those who came but could not stay. Sands is a not-for-profit organisation that provides emotional support, information and hope to families following the death of a baby during pregnancy or shortly after birth. An estimated one in four pregnancies (93,655) ends in miscarriage in Australia each year, and approximately 2,425 babies are either stillborn or die shortly after birth. Sands community of trained Volunteer Parent Supporters offer a real sense of understanding. They know the heartbreak and devastation that follows the death of a baby as they too have experienced it. Sands also offers resources and education for healthcare professionals. Along with the High Tea the day will also include a silent auction which will include thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes that have been donated by local businesses from all over the Sunshine Coast. Valentine's Day, Roses, Lovers of Books and Mapleton The Mapleton Community Library recently hosted five authors as special guests at their annual ‘Lovers of Books’ event for Valentine’s Day. Each of the authors who spoke at the function represented an entertaining and interesting selection of books across a wide range of genres and, as special thanks, authors were presented with a single rose. The authors included local Blackall Range writer, Valverde Maclean, who spoke about books that had influenced his writing. He told how other experiences in his life have also indirectly made their way into his novels of romance, relationships, and mystery. His passion for Australia, his interest in personal and family relationships, and his curiosity about people are all on display in ‘The Disappearance of Merry’ and his most recent release ‘Magenta’, stories that combine an enjoyable blend of romance and mystery in various Australian settings. The other invited authors were Chris Cullen who had the audience singing and dancing to his story of ‘Funky Chicken’, along with Alison Paterson author of ‘Anzac Sons’, which tells the story of five brothers during World War I. It was initially written for an adult readership, however she has also published a version targeted at younger readers. Lovers of dogs were entertained by Tanya Arnold, author of ‘Pupcakes’, a recipe book of healthy treats for hairy friends and, on a more serious note, Dr Robin King-Cullen whose book ‘Mastering the Art of Town Planning’ investigates adding sense to the built environment around us. Look out for Beerwah on Great Day Out
Channel 7 television show ‘The Great Day Out’ (formerly The Great South East), which runs on a Sunday afternoon at 5.30pm, recently had a film crew travel from Brisbane to Beerwah on a vintage train as part of ‘Destination Blues’. ‘Destination Blues’ offers guests a train journey, blues music show and a meal for a great Saturday night out, with the food and show held at the Beerwah Community Hall.
Volunteers from Celebrate Glasshouse Country act as guides directing visitors off the train and through Beerwah to the hall for an entertaining ‘Blues’ night out. The segment will be shown this Sunday, March 5, so keep your eye out and you may just spot the Glass House Mountains and the beautiful town centre of Beerwah. For future events there will also be an opportunity for locals to go along and enjoy the live music and a meal, with the next event planned for March 11. Glasshouse Country View Club Contributed by Janet Kitchin The club held their monthly lunch meeting last week and our guest speaker was Amanda Harvey of Queensland Rail who gave us a very interesting talk on both rail trips and holidays within Queensland. Our club also meets for an outing on the first Wednesday of the month and lunch at Glass House Sports Club on the third Wednesday each month. We have lots of fun together, and visit some great places for our outings (we car pool, so transport need not be a problem), as well as having interesting speakers at our lunch meetings. Our next outing is on the March 1 when we will have morning tea and games at the park by Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre. The Club raises funds for the Smith Family and the ‘Learning for Life’ program in all their activities. It was a fun learning event enjoyed by Guides of all ages who put on their colourful Country Kitchens aprons and made tasty mini Broccoli and Zucchini Quiche and a tasty Bean Salad. Beerwah Country Kitchen Facilitator Robyn Baker said it was wonderful to work with such a keen group of youngsters. “My group was so competitive and wanted to do it all – it is great to see that kind of enthusiasm,” she said. Surveying the Queensland coast
Contributed by Helen Page At Peachester History Committee’s AGM on Sunday, March 5, guest speaker and Witta local Bill Kitson will present a talk on maritime surveys of the Queensland coast, illustrated with power point and maps. Bill is one of Queensland’s best known surveyors and historians. Following a 1974 investigation of the surviving markers along the Queensland borders, Bill developed an interest in the men who mapped our state. This led to extensive research, and the collection of artefacts, diaries, photographs and artwork, to preserve the history of surveying in Queensland. In 1980 he was appointed as curator of the newly established Lands, Mapping and Surveying Museum, a position he held until his retirement in 2008. For the last fifteen years Bill has been researching the detailed maritime surveys of the Queensland coast conducted from 1861 to 1914, in preparation for a book; and this will be the theme of his talk at the meeting on Sunday. It was agreed that reminiscences have limited appeal and many young writers lack personal style or grammar. Hence it seems that young writers are getting reviews but are not actually getting better. The magazine ‘Five Minute Tales’ sells well but needs promotion over a wider area. Promotional advertising was considered and a “more appealing” cover suggested. Exercises: A Near Death Experience. Guest Speaker was Tim McGee from Sunshine Coast Council’s Business Development Branch. Tim made attendees aware of available help to small business by Council. We are in the process of adding details to our website. Check it out. Since the last Chamber get-together, I have met with Andrew Powell MP to discuss the upcoming deadline for submissions to the Draft South East Queensland Plan. The Chamber has prepared a submission with regards to small infill developments throughout the Hinterland, encouraging tourism to our area and providing land for commercial use, e.g. smaller workshops and manufacturing which would encourage jobs close to home. I have also met with Andrew Wallace MP to discuss the difficulties and frustrations we all have with Telstra. He is well aware of the issues. We have spoken about inviting all parties involved to get a clearer picture of what is happening, why it is not happening and what excuses each one of them can come up with. I will inform about any progress on that front. In the meantime we are preparing to launch a petition, get people’s opinion on paper and overall prepare to counter any arguments with people power. Jayden’s Story Five-year-old Jayden started training at San Training Centre in October last year and has seen some amazing changes over his last four months of training with us. His mother, Merinda, says she has seen so many improvements with Jayden’s gross motor skills as well as his listening skills, his co-ordination and his confidence. These changes have been noticed also by Jayden’s Kindergarten teachers who have commented on improvements in him over the last few months. Merinda’s favourite thing about our club is the amount of patience the instructors have with each and every child. Whether there is just Jayden in the class or a full class, each child is treated equally and encouraged to focus their energy on the task. Ground yourself with groundcovers With Spencer and Karen Shaw When we think of local native plants we often think of just the trees and shrubs, but South East Queensland is rich in its diversity of local native plants that can be used as groundcovers in your garden. Groundcovers stabilise your soil, cool the roots of trees and provide food and refuge for native fauna. Many exotic groundcovers are traditional old favourites, but they are also notorious weeds in your gardens and bushland. Tradescantias, Syngonium, Singapore Daisy and Polk-a-dot Plant are just a few of the worst and they pose a genuine threat to Australian bushland. The solution is to control and eradicate these exotics and go for local native plants for groundcover in your garden. Yes it is that time of year again when you don the gloves and head out to a local site that is hosting a Clean Up Australia Day event, and there are plenty of local sites for you to head along to at Beerburrum, Coochin Creek, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Peachester, Maleny, Mapleton and Mooloolah. With so much local interest in Gardners Falls being loved to death lately, it would be great to see a good size group out there helping site co-ordinator Kaylah Gerkew. The extended dry season has been a challenge for most of us, however one group of little critters have loved it – bees! I have seen more native bees this year than ever before, including both solitary species and social stingless bees. Australia’s approximately 2000 species of native bee show a huge diversity of size, shapes, nesting biology, and social complexity. Methods of collecting pollen also differ; leaf-cutter bees have a large flat area, or scopa, under the abdomen that is covered in long, pollen-carrying hairs. Stingless and honey bees have a pollen basket or corbicula, a concave area surrounded by hairs on the hind leg. Carpenter and blue-banded bees display buzz-pollinating – their whole body vibrates, shaking pollen free of the flower. Larval and adult bees feed on both pollen and nectar. The type and amount of amino acids in pollen varies between plants, therefore bees need diversity, including herbs and vegetables left to go to flower (e.g. basil, rosemary, lettuces, cabbages and Asian greens), fruiting plants such as berries, citrus, macadamias and passionfruit, and introduced flowers. Native plants are crucial to the survival of all native bees, with most species needing a range of plants, including native grasses, groundcovers like native daisies and violets, shrubs such as grevilleas and hakeas, and trees including paperbarks, tea-trees, lilly pillies and eucalypts. Bees also need water sources, especially during hot days. A pebble-filled container is best to prevent accidental drownings. Most importantly, bees need toxin-free environments, so ditch those nasty sprays. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? School News Fun Friday at Mooloolah State School
Contributed by Shelly Lenz Mooloolah State School has this year introduced a new Behaviour Management System which is an extension of the previous system and process within the school that has been revamped with staff, parents and students in 2016. The new system for behaviours at the school allows children to monitor their own behaviours and reflect upon the choices they make. It is designed to acknowledge and reward positive behaviour choices and consistently follow through with consequences for less desirable behaviour. Students who are achieving positively on the chart for their behaviour choices will be given the opportunity to participate in ‘Fun Friday’ activities in the afternoon. These students will have opportunities to choose an activity on offer by Mooloolah State school staff every Friday such as swimming, pottery, fishing, computing, sporting activities and much more. These will change on a regular basis. This system is focused on children owning their own behaviour choices and being rewarded for the great job they do.

As a result of everyone’s efforts Peachester won the Small Schools Trophy and the following also placed well individually: Sam Atkinson was the runner up Age Champion 10yr Boys; Emma Small was Age Champion 10yr Girls; and Maddy Small was runner up Age Champion 11 year Girls.

Contributed by Wendy Stott The weather has been perfect for swimming but not one of the Glasshouse Christian College students were cooling down or relaxing at the recent Glasshouse District Swimming Carnival. The students were on a mission to break records, beat personal bests and make their mark in the swimming community. The team supported each other well and won many ribbons. Joshua Moore set three new records and was the 11-year-old boys’ age champion. Chloe Turnbull was runner up champion for the 10-year-old girls. The GCC team did very well, finishing second place behind Maleny State School who are to be congratulated on providing such stiff competition. Eight Glasshouse Christian College students will be competing in the Sunshine Coast Swimming Carnival in the near future and we look forward to learning of their achievements.

Contributed by Shelly Lenz Recently our budding young swimmers who qualified with their times from our swimming carnival went to Beerwah Pool to represent our school at the District Swimming Carnival, joined by the school’s PE teacher Ms Rachael Muller and parents. The students who represented our school were: Tamsyn Douglas, Alyssa Hayman, Katie Pettingill, Axel Stewart, Jack Patterson, Scarlett Dickson, Ella Ward, Bonnie Muller, William Ward, Ruby Pettingill, Gema Atkinson, Ryan Venditti-Bradley and Caitlyn West. They entered many events across the age groups, including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. They did extremely well and many of them came back with ribbons. You Said It Bail laws
I read with interest the comment by Olive Hockings of Maleny. While I deplore domestic violence of any kind, I have also witnessed the attitude of the authorities, Domestic Violence Support Services and the general public in regards to male victims. Having said that, I would like to point out the legal mine field being created with this proposal. Our legal system has always been that the onus of proof rests with the state. Of late, we have been witness to public pressure applied to the state to convict a person on circumstantial evidence, and now pressure to presume guilt before proof of a crime being committed. I think I should make it public that I have had a family member murdered by her husband, however I must point out that that crime was murder not domestic violence gone bad. There is a big difference between the two and we must continue to prosecute them as such. Again, I feel the need to point out that there are as many male victims of domestic violence, but the problem is most men will not admit to being on the receiving end and if they report it they are often ridiculed by police and refused help from the D.V. services. It makes sense
I would like to raise the issue of air conditioning in classrooms on the back of our recent heatwave and increasing average Queensland temperatures more generally. The issue was highlighted a few times this summer, but I fear it will fade into the background again as soon as the heat dies down. As a parent, it’s very frustrating to see countless millions spent on professional development, literacy and numeracy programs, curriculum alterations and standardised testing when we have an obvious truth standing before us. We already know that the learning environment and temperatures play a significant role in learning outcomes. Research has shown that children, as well as adults, learn most effectively at around 24 degrees and start to experience difficulties with focus and attention span above 28 degrees. Given it is such an evidence-based means to improve student potential and learning outcomes why aren't our education ministers willing to get on board given our climate is breaking records year after year. Is it because children don't vote? Or is it because our ministers really are as out of touch as recent times suggest? Can we really trust our children’s best interests to politicians that didn’t even realize trains require train drivers? Or that every summer there is a spike in demand for electricity? Yes, air conditioning schools would be expensive and include ongoing energy costs, but options to offset the costs and capitalize on the investment exist. Many countries around the world are now exploring and indeed realizing the potential for solar panels to power schools altogether. It creates jobs, reduces greenhouse emissions, slashes state education budgets, redirects school budgets towards more pressing needs and eases the pressure on power grids. The government is always talking it up and 24

Amnesty International report
In 2016, hateful language and fear-mongering were prevalent in politics across the world. The world’s most vulnerable people were the ones who suffered as world leaders turned their backs. This and more was revealed in Amnesty International’s report on the state of the world’s human rights launched last week. I like to think as an Australian, I am part of a society that stands up as a beacon against this darkness in the world. I was ashamed to see a list of serious human rights abuses that took place on our watch in our own country, due to our Government’s policies. The abuse of children in prisons, and the fact that Aboriginal kids are 24 times more likely to be separated from their families and communities in prison is unacceptable. Similarly, the trauma faced by children, families, and vulnerable people in Australia’s offshore detention centres must end. I am proud to be an Amnesty International volunteer; it seems that taking a stand for human rights, right here in our community has never been more important. This year I will be working to return Australia to its position as a leader on human rights. Protecting each and every person’s right to live a safe, fulfilling life is what our society is all about. Beerwah Library vandalised
Early last week, vandals struck Beerwah Library, causing what appears to be significant damage to the wall near the entrance to the toilets. Sunshine Coast Council confirmed the incident. “Sunshine Coast Council is aware of the vandalism at Beerwah Library which has been reported to police,” said the spokesperson. “We are unable to comment further as the matter is under investigation.” Beerwah Police were asked for further details, however they could not respond before going to print. If anyone has information which could assist in their investigations, please call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Representatives Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council Clean-up for the hatchlings As the first turtle hatchlings of the season begin their journey from their nests to the ocean, I joined the dedicated TurtleCare groups, wildlife experts and over 500 volunteers across the Sunshine Coast community to clear river mouths and local beaches of rubbish and debris. My modest 1.34kg of plastic bags, bits and pieces contributed to a massive 619kg of rubbish removed from our beaches and waterways. Removing this unsightly rubbish is critical to protecting our ecology which includes around 50 turtle nests this year.
Bells Creek Arterial Road complete
I was delighted to attend the ceremony to mark the completion of the first stage of the much-anticipated Bells Creek Arterial Road. The new road provides a long awaited second access road for the Bellvista/ Bells Reach communities and creates the entry to the new city-sized community at Caloundra South. The opening of the 2.8km stretch will give direct access to Australia’s largest master-planned city, named Aura by Stockland, and has already contributed to over 18,500 direct and indirect local jobs for the Sunshine Coast. Eventually the region will benefit from a much needed extension of the road to connect with the Bruce Highway. I will eagerly watch any changes to traffic patterns and its progressive use with great interest!

New partner and new era for Sunshine Coast Airport
Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra Time for an update on the Mooloolah Community Centre To recap, over the past eight years the Mooloolah Community Centre has developed a thriving contact and support base for people in the region. Their team of forty talented and dedicated volunteers has worked tirelessly to create a space that promotes health and well-being, bringing the community together for activities, education and social interaction. But this hub in the heart of Mooloolah is facing a very limited future in what services it can offer the community. The management committee is working towards a plan for self-reliance and wish to undertake renovations and extensions to the hall. However, with the limited lease it has, obtaining capital grants needed for these improvements is not possible. The idea is to obtain a long term lease to grow the services of the Centre. Onto the update: Late last year I had a very successful meeting with The Hon Kate Jones, Minister for Education and Minister for Tourism and Major Events. We discussed the vital role this Centre plays in the community and how Education Queensland could help ensure a long and bright future for its services. Time has passed as I have again written to the Minister and am hopeful to hear back on this matter shortly. I believe that we are getting closer to a solution and hopefully one that will allow the Centre to flourish. Historically, up until the mid-1980s the building housed the Mooloolah School, but in 2006 Education Queensland gave consent for it to be used as a community centre. In the subsequent years the Centre’s programs have grown to include counselling services, a community garden and welfare for families who find themselves in dire financial circumstances by which food vouchers, petrol vouchers and other assistance is provided. The Centre also runs a highly successful Op Shop which funds the bulk of activities undertaken and is the mainstay in meeting operating costs.
Australian company Palisade Investment Partners will be the Sunshine Coast Airport’s commercial operating partner in a deal worth more than half a billion dollars. Under the deal, the airport will continue to be owned by Sunshine Coast Council, with Palisade operating the asset under a 99-year lease. Palisade will be responsible for operating, investing and developing the airport and will oversee future negotiations with airlines to expand both domestic and international routes available from the Sunshine Coast. However, council will maintain responsibility for facilitating the proposed airport expansion project, which includes construction of a new runway, apron expansion and related infrastructure. What is traditional Chinese Medicine?
Acupuncture @ Beerwah Traditional Chinese Medicine includes a range of techniques as treatment for a variety of ailments. These include acupuncture which uses fine needles inserted into acupuncture points to enhance your body’s function to resolve health issues. Cupping is the placement of suction cups on areas of the body, used to help relieve and reduce the symptoms of colds and flu, and also used for muscle corks and general muscle soreness. Chinese herbal formulas are natural substances used to regulate and normalise body function. These are available as pills, capsules, granules, raw to be simmered and a decoction made for drinking, tinctures, ointments and plasters. Moxibustion is burning a herb called moxa on needles or near the skin at acupuncture points or areas of pain. Other treatments include: Exercise Therapy such as Tai Chi and QI Gong; Tuina - massage techniques to promote good health; Guasha - skin scraping to enhance blood flow, often used for treatment of colds in the early stages; and Auricular acupoints - where ear points are used for various things including relief from smoking cessation. Last Thursday night Brownie and I headed along to Daepo Korean BBQ straight after work for a barbeque feast. As they open for dinner from 5.00pm, you have plenty of time to sit and enjoy the all you can eat meal. We had a chat to Rakhui who runs the place when we arrived and he gave us a bit of an update including how, now that they have settled in and are getting to know the local diners, they have introduced a few changes. Barbeque Buffet is being offered for both lunch and dinner, priced at $24.00 at lunch and $29.00 for dinner for adults, with special prices for kids based on their age. For those who don’t want to give the cooking at the table option a go, you can always just choose the buffet option and then you can just choose from a number of precooked meals and salad bar items, which will now cost $21.00 for dinner and $17.00 for lunch for adults.
On the night we went there was plenty to choose from in the buffet only option, including Miso Soup, Teriyaki Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Korean Fried Chicken, spring rolls, vegetable tempura, Kimchi fried rice and Gyoza (dumplings) – and Rakhui says they are looking at expanding the variety of precooked meals they will include. However for Brownie and I, we love the idea of creating our own barbeque options and giving the traditional flavours a try, and my best tip would be if it seems confusing, remember it is okay to ask questions! First select the type of meat – it’s a good idea to start with nonmarinated cuts first, then move on to the richer, marinated options. For beginners, you can’t go wrong with the Samgyupsal or, as we may know it – pork belly, beef steak and chicken. While you are up at the Barbeque Buffet choosing
your meat and vegetables, also grab yourself some seasonings and oils and bring them back to the table to add to the items once they have been cooked. The most common sauce is called Ssamjang, a combination of Miso, Gochuchang (red chilli paste), garlic, vinegar and sugar. While there is a really big range of sauces available for us westerners’ tastes, Rakhui is really keen to share his passion for the traditional flavours of Korean Barbeque and will encourage you to try items such as the Kimchi, and pickled vegetables. They are also a BYO venue, so if you aren’t that organised you can drop into the Beerwah Hotel’s bottleshop at the Marketplace and grab a bottle before you head to the restaurant. If you need an ice bucket, it’s free and there is no corkage charge. You can purchase cold drinks, while coffee and tea are included in the price and there are a range of biscuits and lollies (for the kids) for a sweet end to your meal.

Things To Do Coast’s mobile library brings storytelling to the park
Motorcycle Swap Meet at Maleny
As part of the First 5 Forever early childhood literacy program, Sunshine Coast Council is taking the mobile library on a playdate to Skippy Park at Landsborough on Monday, March 6 from 9.30am to 11.00am. Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the mobile library playdates program aimed to make a visit to the library easy and fun. “Each visit will include a storytelling session, games, dress-ups and a lot of fun for toddlers and their care givers,” Cr McKay said. “Everyone is invited to visit the mobile library to borrow books or register for their free Sunshine Coast Libraries membership. There are four free mobile library storytelling sessions for the community to choose from. No bookings are required however teddy bears, hats and picnic blankets are a must.” Skippy Park is located at 321/335 Old Landsborough Road, Landsborough.
The Sunshine Coast branch of the Historical Motorcycle Club of Queensland will hold the 24th annual Motorcycle Swap Meet at the Maleny Show grounds on Saturday, March 11 and Sunday, March 12. Gates open at 6.00am for sellers/vendors and then at 8.00am for buyers and the general public. The swap will trade all day until 6.00pm. Gates will open again on Sunday morning at 6.00am and the swap will run until midday. There will be a large variety of food available to suit everyone’s taste. If you have something to sell and therefore need a swap site, the cost will be only $5.00 for the weekend. Items for sale are restricted to “motorcycle related”, but this provides a very wide cross section from which to choose. CPR awareness Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is easy to learn and can help save lives and Beerwah Library is offering the opportunity for locals to attend a session during March with a certified trainer from the Queensland Ambulance Service to learn the basic skills necessary to sustain life. The session at Beerwah Library will be held on Wednesday, March 1 between 1.00pm and 2.30pm. A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart has stopped or is too weak to pump effectively. 76% of heart attacks occur at home. In an emergency, every second counts. Maleny Printmakers, most of whom are also members of Arts Connect Inc, are holding a pop-up exhibition 'Past and Press-ent' for the month of March at Vianta, 3/70 Simpson Street, Beerwah. Seven of their members – Noela Mills, Jacky Lowry, Cholena Hughes, Julie Hanrahan, Neville Field, Jenny Eurell, and Michele Deveze – are showing a selection of their works, both past and present. Maleny Printmakers is a small group of local printmakers, promoting the beauty and variety of printmaking in all its forms. Printmaking in Australia is experiencing a resurgence and Maleny Printmakers are participating wholeheartedly in this renaissance. As with most pop-up shows, this exhibition has had almost no planning or lead up, and it is no secret that some of the work has been exhibited before, but the underlying themes of the natural world, and human endeavour within it, make it a visually and conceptually cohesive exhibition. Although there will not be a formal opening, some of the artists will be having dinner and a few drinks at Vianta this Friday, March 3, and they would love you to join them. Jobs for the yard in March • Wait until we get a few more showers before giving your gardens a fertiliser boost coming into autumn, or else the nutrients may disappear before being taken into the soil and be wasted. • Put spring flowering bulbs in the fridge veggie crisper now and plant out at the end of the month. • If you’re planting seedlings for a spring display, it is timely to watch out for cut worms. This soil-borne pest chews through the seedling stem at ground level. • White cedar caterpillars are on the move. Wrap a Hessian bag around the trunk and check underneath for the damaging insects as they’ll congregate there during the day. Squash or spray them with a pyrethrum spray. • Start planting broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower seedlings from mid-March. Watch out for little green caterpillars, as they can destroy your seedlings overnight. • Plant strawberry runners towards the end of the month into well-mulched beds with lots of compost and manure. • Fertilise sasanqua camellias for a good winter flower display. • At the start of the month dig some lime through the soil where you want to plant bush or climbing peas, sweet peas or snow peas. Plant at the end of the month. • Watch the new growth of azaleas and, if the veins stand out dark green with pale green or yellow tissue between, apply iron chelate right away. • Potatoes can be planted into well-mulched beds. Only use certified seed potatoes to avoid introducing damaging virus diseases to your garden. Wellcombe, grown by Theo Beenders, was the best in the Other Hybrids category, and Trevor and Jan took out best foliage with their Calathea. Dahlias always steal the show When I was younger, an uncle grew prize winning dahlias. They were spectacular firework explosions of colour that seemed to defy the rules of sensible flower design. There were spidery cactus dahlias, spheres of pom-pom and ball dahlias, perfect symmetry of single dahlias, snake-tongue like fimbriated dahlias, collared collerette dahlias and an inflorescence of others equally as beguiling. They were specially grown in the best position in the garden, and each carefully staked so that the single flower on each plant could grow to its maximum potential. At times over the years, I’d help to plant the bulbs at the start of the season, and lift them at the end of the season. Dahlias are a member of the daisy family. They originate from Mexico (where they are now the national flower) where they were utilised as a food and medicinal plant. They were brought to Europe in the late 1780s and named after Andres Dahl, a Swedish botanist. Dahlias are in flower now and as the summer winds down into autumn, so too will the dahlias. Did you know that it’s best to lift the dahlia tubers and store them out of the ground through their dormant winter months? But as the flowers finish, don’t be tempted to dig them up until the stems have totally died back. A mistake some unfamiliar gardeners make is lifting them too early, which can lead to poor flowering next season. Those tubers are a storehouse of energy for next season’s growth. And the dahlia needs to be allowed to ready itself for dormancy at its own pace. So wait till the foliage has died right off and the stems are starting to dry. Lifting the clumps of tubers is easy using a garden fork. Just prise around each side, then lift the whole lot up and out. Don’t worry if some tubers fall off or if you take the soil with the tubers. Cut the stems down to about 20cms off the top of the tubers – this gives you something to use as a planting guide next season. The lifted clumps can be stored in polystyrene boxes in an airy dry place – under the house is good. Give them a sprinkle of water every four weeks to keep those tubers from being desiccated by our dry winter days. Don’t forget to tag your dahlias so you know what colour or variety they are. But if you want to grow prize winning dahlias you’ll go to the effort of washing the dirt off the tubers using a hose, then inspecting them to remove any damaged, eaten or diseased tubers, then dust them with a fungicide powder, then store them in boxes with clean straw. Some growers even use vermiculite, sphagnum moss or washed river sand to store them in. Keep an eye out when spring arrives for new shoots … but don’t be tempted to run out and plant them at the first sight of a green shoot. Just give them a light water with a seaweed and fish emulsion solution and wait til late spring (a week after Melbourne Cup) before planting them out. You can just plant the whole clump again, or you can carefully separate the tubers to increase your planting stock – or give some away to lucky friends and relatives. Before you plant them, bang a stake in so you can tie them up as they grow. Putting the stake in later risks damaging the tubers. Don’t plant them too deeply. They are best planted with the tubers laying flat. So if planting a clump, dig a hole, make a mound of soil in the middle, and splay the tubers out over the mound making sure the crown of the clump is no more than 5-10cm below the surface. If planting individual tubers, dig a 5-10cm hole and lay the tuber flat but on a slight angle so the top is higher than the tail. Then it’s a matter of regular watering, monthly feeding and tying up the stems as they grow so they aren’t damaged by winds. Then enjoy the show, cause it’ll be a beauty.

He prayed, "Almighty God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth: Grant that these ashes may be to us a sign of our mortality and penitence, that we may remember that it is only by your gracious gift that we are given everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen." Then he dipped his thumb in a small dish of ashes and, with the words, "Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return," marked the sign of the cross on his forehead. This year Ash Wednesday is March 1. No one knows exactly who decided that the imposition of ashes to remind people of their mortality and need for repentance would be a useful spiritual practice for all believers, but by the 11th century the practice became a common marker of the

beginning of Lent in the Western church. The Ash Wednesday liturgy itself in modern practice includes three main sections. The first involves the public reading of Scriptures and Psalms chosen to put the congregation in a repentant frame of mind. Many of these Scriptures focus on the need for repentance of the heart resulting in justice for the oppressed and mercy for the poor. The second section is the imposition of ashes, with the reminder that we are dust and to dust we shall return. (The ashes are commonly made by burning the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday celebration.) And the third is the celebration of Holy Communion. As we come forward to receive the bread and wine, conscious of our own mortality and painfully aware that, as Alexander Solzhenitsyn once said, “the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being,” the grace of God is displayed to us penitent believers as greater than all our sin. Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails enjoyed the game of tennis against Nambour Heights and came away the winners with a score of 42-30. Thanks to Gerry, Janet, Eunice and Sonia. Whistlers played at Witta against Ballinger Breezers. We had lots of laughter on and off the court and great rallies from both courts. There were lots of deuces with great shots from both teams. We took a long time to finish all the sets but had a good win in the end. Score was 46-27 games, 7-1 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats were at a very hot Nambour Showgrounds up against the Champers. There were lots of deuces and great tennis but the winning score went to the Champers. Final score was 6-2 sets, 41-29 games. Well done Libby, Annie, Anne and Sonia. Social tennis is held on Monday at 8.00am and Saturday at 1.00pm, all welcome. Contributed by Ian Hansen Wednesday’s Twilight Challenge winning Teams were: Ben Bryce, Handles, Sunstone, Amigos, Musketeers, Mavericks and Tutors. Although there were 8 rinks, only 14 Twilight Challenge Teams were playing in the competition as the other rink was a social Fours game. The lucky draw winners were: Lead - Scott Alexander, Second - Judith Lees, and Skip - Brad Williams. The Touchers went to Ian Chatterton, Judith Lees and Derek Wilson. The lucky Money Board winners were Carol Cook (3rd week in a row) and Brad Williams. The Mystery Raffle Prize winner was Jackie Montgomery. Friday there were 5 rinks of Scroungers and the winners were: Judith Lees (plenty of wins this week), John Kapetanic, David Burgess, Joe Walters and John Long. Two Sponsors’ Prize winners were present to claim their winnings in Margaret Ginns for Top of the Range Meats and Kay Gesch for Day Lillies. The lucky Money Board winner was Judith Lees, making it four wins for the week. This week kicked off with the Monthly Jackpot Pairs Monday, followed by the Twilight Challenge Wednesday and Scroungers Friday. There should also be a Rinks Team travelling to Glasshouse Wednesday morning. There were no Tuesday Bowls this week as the green was unavailable due to maintenance work being carried out on it. However, Tuesday Bowls recommences next week, March 7, with the starting time reverting back to the usual 8.30 for 9.00am. Hopefully, this will be much better patronised than the trial afternoon starting time. Finally, a reminder about St Patrick’s Day, March 17. Players are requested to wear something green and I’m advised that a “real Leprechaun” will be in attendance. Could be interesting.
