Hi Everyone...

I love to attend an event where there is a lot of love in the room - where people have come together to celebrate and acknowledge a significant achievement.

This aptly describes the recent book launch of ‘Sundowner of the Skies: Oscar Garden, the forgotten aviator’, written by Oscar Garden’s daughter Mary Garden.

The launch was held at the Maleny RSL, which was perfect for accommodating the almost 100 strong audience, with many getting into the spirit of the event by wearing 1930s fashions in a show of solidarity with the time of Oscar’s aviation achievements.

The launch definitely had a party atmosphere. Each of the guests seemed to have played a different role in supporting Mary’s dream and determined effort of both writing the book and getting it published.

The book was years in the making requiring extensive, detective-style research to flesh out the story from what had started as a feature article in the ‘Australian Financial Review’ in 2005.

Mary’s passion for the project has been genuinely incredible. And if you love 1930s fashion you should definitely check out the great social pics taken at the event on page 28.

Restoration of Glenferna celebrated

There has been plenty of excitement at the Maleny Pioneer Village since the Governor of Queensland, Mr Paul de Jersey AC, accepted the Maleny Cultural and Historical Society's invitation to visit the village and officially open Glenferna on Saturday, June 15.

The memorable occasion marked the culmination of an incredible job undertaken by the volunteers to restore the farmhouse built by Edward T F Thynne in 1903 as part of the first selection of land in Maleny.

When Brian and Leonie McFarlane bought the property at 1010 Landsborough-Maleny Road in 2013, Brian was unsure what they would do with the old house, which was in a state of disrepair with the verandahs falling off.

After a builder deemed it suitable to be restored a decision was made to gift the house to the historical society.

The house was moved on May 26, 2016 and since then, through the hundreds of volunteer hours and a variety of grants, donations and fundraising efforts, there has been an absolutely incredible transformation.

The Governor presented certificates of appreciation to a small group of volunteers who had been instrumental in making the project happen, including Desley and Tom Malone, Greg

Woman on arson and fraud charges A local woman has been charged after she allegedly crashed her car and set it alight before telling police it had been stolen in an attempt to claim the insurance.

It will be alleged that on May 25 a woman notified police that her Hyundai Veloster had been taken overnight from outside a residence on Coonowrin Road at Glass House Mountains while she had been out.

Officers conducting patrols at Bells Creek later located the vehicle destroyed by fire on a forestry track off Roys Road.

Forensic examinations later determined that the car had been deliberately set alight.

Ongoing investigations by Caloundra detectives revealed the victim had allegedly been involved in a crash while driving the vehicle on Coochin Creek Road at Coochin Creek before the car’s disappearance.

Further information obtained by police suggested the woman then deliberately disposed of the vehicle, allegedly in order to make a claim on insurance.

A 20-year-old Glass House Mountains woman has been charged with arson of a vehicle and attempted fraud and is due to appear in Caloundra Magistrates Court on July 10.

First steps to attend university The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) will offer a free course for Sunshine Coast adults who want to upgrade their academic skills, get a taste of university life and even start planning for a new career.

Uni Skills for You is a two-day program that will be run at the USC Sippy Downs campus on June 2425. It is designed for adults of all ages who did not finish high school or may have not studied formally for some years.

USC spokesperson Veronica Sanmarco said there are no tests, assignments or exams to worry about.

It is just an opportunity to sample higher education and explore the career and higher education options open to them.

“The program aims to demystify university for those who are unsure about what tertiary study involves.

At the end of the course, participants can arrange to have individual sessions with USC career advisers to help develop study and career plans.

From Beerwah to Barcelona…

By Sonia Clark Dan Clarke from Beerwah First National Real Estate contacted GC&M News last week to let us know about a talented local family - the Yorks - who are heading to Spain to compete in the World Roller Games in July.

When Ken and Kylie York told Dan about their whole family’s involvement in the sport he admitted that he didn’t know a lot about roller derby but remembered seeing it a few years ago on television and thinking that, as a sport, it looked brutal.

Now having met the locals who have the potential to become world champions, right in our very own backyard, Dan was keen to support their efforts, as well as being keen to bring awareness of the sport to the local community.

Kylie explained that roller derby had evolved in recent years from being predominantly perceived as sports entertainment to an internationally recognised sport. It is even garnering attention from the International Olympic Committee as a possible future Olympic sport.

The first World Roller Games were held in Nanjing, China in 2017 and Kylie was a member of the Australian team. It was at this event that Australia won its first medal - silver.

In July this year, Kylie will once again be flying the Aussie flag as she represents Australia at the World Roller Games in Barcelona – although this time as a manager.

Kylie is also excited that her husband Ken and their sons, Jaidyn and Corben, have been selected to be part of the Skate Australia Roller Derby Team to compete in the first Australian men's team - and they have a very good chance of coming home with a medal.

As each competitor is required to pay $5,500, Kylie and the team members are seeking sponsorship to help ease the financial burden.

“As you can imagine, with three members of the same family on the team, we have been doing all we can think of to raise much needed funds to get the boys to Barcelona,” Kylie said.

“At the same time, I have been doing all I can to try to reduce costs for the team as a whole by trying to source sponsors and discounts wherever we can.”

Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

Drag queen bingo to support motor neurone disease Prominent Maleny community member Joyce Newton died from the incurable neurological condition motor neurone disease (MND) in 2018.

Her good friend Jared Ashcroft is paying tribute to Joyce by fundraising for the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Queensland (MND Queensland) and participating in this year’s Bridge to Brisbane, as well as other activities including a fun drag bingo night on Saturday, August 17 at the Maleny Showgrounds.

Along with many in Maleny, Jared was grateful for all Joyce did for the local community and wanted to turn his sadness around and do something positive to pay tribute to her.

He decided to fundraise for MND Queensland, which provides support and services to more than 210 people with MND and their families across Queensland.

MND Queensland’s fundraising and communications manager Jason Russo said he noticed that Jared had registered to fundraise for MND Queensland through the Bridge to Brisbane.

“Since then, I’ve just seen his fundraising tally keep growing. He’s already raised $4,000,” Jason said.

“This is an amazing effort and we are so grateful to Jared and everyone who has supported him.

“MND Queensland receives very little government funding and we are heavily reliant on community

The Commonwealth Bank has pledged to donate $500,000 nationally over the next few months to recognise organisations that make a difference in the communities in which we live and work.

Each Commonwealth Bank branch has been allocated $500 to donate to causes important to their local community.

Last week our local community benefited from this program with Beerwah branch employees presenting $500 to the Beerwah Youth & Community Centre.

Beerwah branch manager Kathleen Kraut said the staff were excited to have the opportunity to support the Beerwah Youth & Community Centre.

“They are planning to use the donation to support the education programs that they are running in local schools,” she said.

Local honoured for service

By Lea Parkes Three of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services’ finest were announced as award recipients in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honour List.

One of those recipients was well known Glasshouse Country local Lou Spann, who has served with the Glass House Mountains SES unit since 1990 as well as being a Rural Fire Service volunteer since 1994 and the first officer with Beerwah Rural Fire Service.

Lou has been a stalwart of the local community, both as a primary school teacher for 21 years at Glass House Mountains and three years at Landsborough state schools and as an influential member of his local Queensland SES and Rural Fire Service Queensland units for almost three decades.

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said the award recognised the recipients’ outstanding commitment and service to the state.

“Queensland is fortunate to have thousands of highly skilled and hardworking fire and emergency services personnel who assist the community when times get tough,” Mr Crawford said.

Lou has been acknowledged for continuously going above and beyond what is expected of a Queensland SES volunteer through his contribution to critical leadership and exceptional local knowledge in times of need.

He has been recognised for his passion, enthusiasm and experience in extreme and challenging mountain rescues, and he is held in high regard as an instructor by his peers.

Lou has continued to pursue operational excellence through professional development and, in turn, drives enhanced capability and resilience for the community of the Glass House Mountains.

It takes a special type of person to work in fire and emergency services and although many don’t ask for thanks, they are very deserving of recognition.

When I asked Lou how he feels about receiving the award, like most who are driven to serve their local community he talked about what a privilege it had been for him to work beside other dedicated members of the crews he was worked with in his nearly 30 years of emergency services volunteering.

The work the crews do is achieved by individuals working together, particularly for those involved in vertical rescues. With the SES you have to have absolute trust in each other as you are putting your life in their hands.

He did, however, acknowledge that both his children were proud that he has received the recognition and explained that to be able to volunteer for not just the emergency situations that arose, but all the training and preparation required, meant that not just the volunteers but their families had to make significant sacrifices.

Lou and his family moved to Glass House in June of 1990 from Imbil and by the October of that year he had become part of the SES and during that time has participated in more than 100 rescues.

Apparently it was the sound of a helicopter hovering around Mt Tibrogargan that started Lou’s involvement with vertical rescue.

When the family moved to a property just below the mountain he saw some fellas in orange making their way down the front face obviously doing a rescue from the top of the mountain and he thought he could do that.

Within four years of joining the SES he had taken on the role as training officer. He thinks that the other blokes figured that as a teacher he would be good in that job.

Lou explained that the training is quite different to a classroom learning environment as it is very much about developing practical skills and involved a strong leadership role as well.

He said that while he has shared plenty of laughter and good times during his involvement with both the SES and the Rural Fire Service, when work has to be done the focus is all about safety.

Lou would encourage anyone interested in volunteering to contact their local Rural Fire Service or SES and get involved.

Moving to a new community can be daunting. Leaving familiar places, friends and family isn’t always easy and it can take time to settle in and get to know a new area.

Introducing Micah Jones

The new Maleny State High School chaplain, Micah Jones, joined the school at the start of this term.

Micah has a background as a youth pastor in Brisbane and extensive language teaching experience over many years in schools in Vietnam.

At present, the chaplain is employed for three days a week and it is hoped to increase this to four or five days. However, this depends on community funding.

The hinterland community has demonstrated its support for chaplaincy in the past, reflecting the value placed on this service.

Chaplains work in schools to add another level of care and encouragement, listening and helping students to find better ways of dealing with issues ranging from family breakdown, grief and loneliness, to drug abuse, depression and anxiety.

This is serious stuff but it’s also about sharing in the joy and celebrating the positive times.

A local chaplaincy committee works to enable Micah to carry out his role.

Funds raised contribute to the chaplain’s salary and also to provide ways to assist students and families when times become difficult.

The committee hopes to again run the annual invitation-based dinner in September and keep an eye out for the high tea event at The Orangery Maleny on July 31, which gives people the opportunity to meet the chaplain Ion ThIcause.

You will want to pop your specs on to see the incredible display of knitted and crocheted Australiana themed creatures at Judi Coey Optometry in Maleny during this year’s Knitfest on Saturday and Sunday, July 6-7.

Judi's mum, Pam Robinson (pictured), a leader of the needlework group at the Buderim Craft Cottage and also a member of the yarns and fibres group, likes to create a magical display of creatures every year for Judi's shop during the Knitfest Yarn and Fibre Arts Festival in Maleny.

When Pam saw the theme for the first Knitfest, she thought she'd make a few things for Judi's shop and has been making stuffed toys for a magical display each year.

With this year’s theme being Australiana she has included lots of Australian icons in the display from Vegemite jars to colourful galahs.

Pam has been knitting and crocheting since she was a child. She became a teacher and taught her students to knit a scarf each year.

These days she knits fiddle mitts for aged care homes and was involved in making red poppies for the Armistice Day project.

Knitfest is now in its fourth year and attracts more than 10,000 visitors.

The program for the weekend will feature 27 workshops including macramé, extreme knitting, basket making, felting and dyeing with natural dyes. There will also be 100 trade and market stalls, a stargazing night, cooking classes, music, a raw fleece expo, displays and demonstrations.

New ukulele group set to strum

Last NBN tower gets approval The last impediment to an integrated NBN wireless broadband network across the Maleny plateau has been cleared.

In mid-2018 an application for an NBN tower at Burgess Avenue in Maleny was refused by Sunshine Coast Council, citing multiple conflicts with the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme and that “the proposal has not demonstrated any other relevant matter (planning need) to justify or override the identified conflicts”.

NBN in its planning submission stated: “Each fixed wireless facility is connected to another to form a chain of facilities that link back to the NBN fibre network. Although fixed wireless facilities are submitted to council as standalone developments from a planning perspective, they are highly interdependent.”

The refusal threw the fate of the wireless broadband network across the range into doubt as NBN had repeatedly said that the interconnectivity relied on all towers being approved.

Consequently, NBN appealed the refusal in the Planning and Environment Court.

Local resident, Scott Thompson, from Thynne Court in Maleny, elected to join the council in fighting the appeal.

After almost a year of legal wrangling, the court recently upheld the appeal against council’s refusal to allow the construction of the tower.

The judge ordered that the tower be approved with a range of conditions, mainly focusing on aesthetics and landscaping.

The judge also ordered each party to pay their own legal costs.

Commenting on the outcome of the appeal, Ryan Williams, head of NBN local for Queensland, said that they had engaged in meaningful and genuine consultation with both the council and the community during the development process.

“We now look forward to getting on with the job of delivering the NBN broadband access network to this part of the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Williams said.

Sunshine Coast Council declined to comment.

By Sonia Clark Glass House Mountains’ musician Hans Dauncey is planning a local community ukulele group, with players of all ages and abilities welcome.

Hans has been in discussions with the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and hopes to kick off a weekly group on Monday evenings from 6.30-8.30pm starting on June 24.

Hans believes that there are enough interested people in the local area to make a viable group that he hopes will be primarily for the enjoyment of playing and singing together as a community.

“It doesn't matter if anyone has played before or not as we will explore songs with easy parts for beginners and more challenging parts for others,” Hans said.

The group will be called the Glasshouse Ukulele Mountain Musical Initiative or GUMMI, and a gold coin donation will be requested to help cover the hire of the hall.

Hans said he planned to project the songs (words and the chords) on a screen so people did not have to bring their own music books.

Ideally participants will bring their own ukulele but, if required, Hans will have a couple of loan ukes available.

Each week the group will be playing and singing songs from a repertoire that initially will be easy two and three chord songs (traditional and more contemporary) so beginners can gain confidence.

They will aim to introduce some more interesting arrangements down the track using different strums, finger picking or other instruments.

Community Groups New permaculture group for Maleny

Maleny and surrounding areas have an abundance of people interested in or practising permaculture. Unfortunately this is often done in isolation.

Permaculture is just as much about community and building a symbiotic web of people as it is about things like gardening, farming, natural building and eco-friendly solutions for life.

With a wide range of skills and understanding needed, permaculture can often be challenging so it helps to have a supportive group of like-minded people around you.

A Maleny permaculture group has been formed to provide a supportive network in Maleny and surrounding areas.

Recognising that people produce different forms of produce, an integral part of permaculture is the sharing and trading of surpluses.

The new group will engage in a wide range of activities such as workshops, Permablitz-style working bees, trips and open garden home visits.

The inaugural meeting for the group will be held at the Maleny RSL on July 2 starting at 7pm ($2 donation to cover the cost of the venue). All are welcome.

A monthly meeting will then be held at the Maleny RSL on the first Tuesday of each month.

Stories come to life

The latest exhibition at Bankfoot House - Storytelling - showcases special objects from the remarkable heritage collection and explores how we share intimate family memories.

Each Sunday in July storytelling will come to life with a free afternoon tea, guided tour of the house and stories shared by descendants of the families who lived in the house, volunteers and Friends of Bankfoot House, and Sunshine Coast locals.

Hinterland Kids Peachester State School Rides the Night Spelling bee tennis tournament Contributed by Kate Burnett A lucky win for Peachester State School has resulted in 500 tickets to the Ride the Night event at Aussie World on Saturday, June 29. The tickets were gifted to the school after the school principal Kim Fillery’s husband won a radio competition last year.

All the money raised by ticket sales will go directly to the school to fund airconditioning and technology for the students.

The event will be a spectacular kick-off to the school holidays.

For the thrill seekers there is the new interactive Wasp ride and the Mayhem Maze for those who dare, while those who prefer less adrenaline can check out the family rides. With more than 30 rides and attractions plus roving performers, there will be something for all ages to enjoy.

Tickets are $25 each and available until Friday, June 28 (or until sold out) by phoning 5439 5111 or calling into the school office to purchase.

On the night, gates will open at 6pm with rides from 6.30-8.30pm.

Children under 14 years must be accompanied by an adult over 18 years and kids under three are free.

Contributed By Peter Voigt Each year Beerwah High School serves up a spelling bee that’s like no other!

Once again, close to 25% of the student body-battle it out in mock tennis matches, spelling words to stay alive in each rally.

Teams battled fiercely, taking care with the use of their precious ‘teamplay’, reserve and count-me-in cards, and using the ‘powershot’ option (the hardest spelling level), often in an effort to gain ascendency in each game.

The excitement and thrill of competition resulted in a very boisterous and enthusiastic centre court, with enthusiastic students delivering an onslaught and collage of laughter, team spirit, groans, giggles, screams of delight, excited banter and roars of success.

The tennis rally format and tactical gameplay of our one-of-a-kind spelling bee certainly spices up the competition and levels the playing field for students of varying abilities.

The champions were: Year 7 - Anastasia Maher, Braedyn Moldre, Bodhi Robertson, Jaksen Robertson and Riley Schultz.

Year 8 – Lexie Appelman, Riley Ferguson, Charlotte Jackson and Jessamy Tonissoo Year 9 - Harrison Mens, Joshua Morrad, Jessie Poole and Tamara Taripo.

Rugby league Queenslander in the making Peachester State School is extremely proud of Brooklyn’s recent rugby league success. Brooklyn represented the Glasshouse School Boys District in under 11 rugby league at Redcliffe Dolphins Stadium last month.

Brooklyn joined 90 other boys from across the Sunshine Coast, who played their hearts out to gain selection in the Sunshine Coast team.

Although he was not one of the 18 to make it through to the final team, Brooklyn played his best and had fun. “2020 I am coming for you,” Brooklyn said.

His determination and sportsmanship ensures he will give it his best shot next year.

State of Origin Show us your colours

The students of Beeburrum State School showed off their colours and made the most of the last State of Origin by celebrating all thing maroons and blue as a fundraising day to support their student leaders.

Students showed their loyalty by dressing in their Queensland or New South Wales colours in exchange for a gold coin donation.

The school kitchen was also given a workout with some rather tasty treats created for sale at lunchtime.

Hinterland Gems ‘The Gondoliers’ sparkles with Singers’ verve

By Judith Ross-Smith Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Gondoliers’ has always been one of the duo’s most popular comic operettas. From its first production in 1889 it became one of the longest running pieces of musical theatre ever, to the myriad of professional, amateur and school productions of today.

Margaret Taylor’s Maleny Singers production in the Community Centre does not disappoint. It bursts onto the stage with energy, colour and the spirited singing of the women as they move about greeting each other in a Venetian piazza waiting eagerly for the arrival of the gondoliers, especially their heroes Giuseppe and Marco (Christopher Ward and Colin Dunn), who might just choose two of them as their brides.

Under Mrs Taylor’s baton, the company is supported by a 20-piece orchestra (leader Chrissy Davis) that never intrudes and provides some of the special experiences of the show.

One of the most important aspects of any G&S operetta is the complicated plot and the absolute necessity of being able to understand Gilbert’s iconic wit and satire. In this production, the audience could hear almost every word, especially so with Ian McMaster’s Don Alhambra explaining the background twists and turns in his opening number ‘Of that there is no shadow of doubt…’.

Highlights of the production were the energy of the chorus, each one of whom entered into the spirit of the action; the quality voices of the three women, Sarah Jane Abbott (Casilda), Evalee Sharples playing Gianetta and Viera Keogh singing a spirited Tessa; the delicate quartet ‘In a contemplative fashion’; charming dances; and popular tenor Colin Dunn with what is arguably one of the best known of Sullivan’s arias ‘Take a pair of sparkling eyes’.

You Said It Driver attitudes

You'd have to be living in a cave to have not heard about the recent spate of tragic fatalities on our roads. One would imagine the accidents that result in such despair might give us cause to think about our own driving behaviour but an incident on the night of Monday, June 10 convinces me that we are banging our heads on the proverbial wall trying to change driver attitudes.

Travelling from Beerwah to Peachester (sitting on the speed limit) I was harassed by a menacing tailgater from Roberts Road only to be overtaken by a hotted up black V8 ute on double lines and a blind corner just past Frohloff’s Fruit Barn.

While I don't pretend to care about that particular individual driving himself into a tree, it is absolutely terrifying to think he might take an innocent person or family out with him.

I made his speed to be over 110km as he continued on after overtaking me in an 80km zone. If you find yourself in that position and are contemplating such stupidity, maybe stop and have a think about how you would feel if a car with your wife/child/grandchild was hit head-on by a driver passing in that way.

I refer to Jane Hyde’s letter in the GC&M News of June 12. I am not quite sure of the arguments for and against whatever are Ms Hyde’s concerns about the Maleny precinct, and I certainly do not intend to enter into the controversy.

Zonta is not part of this committee whether or not it exists officially as an entity. While Zonta is concerned for the wellbeing of the people of the community, its mission is to advance the status of women by means of service and advocacy, locally and globally.

While, obviously, we would be keen to see women use open space, walking tracks, exercise equipment, etc, this alleged committee is not one Zonta would necessarily be part of nor in fact do we know anything about its validity.

Repair work needed

Residents and visitors to the Maleny area connected by Obi Lane have admiration for the scenery and facilities. It has taken plenty of time and enthusiasm by those associated with the golf club and the other places of interest to create them, as we enjoy them now.

Yet the part of Obi Lane that carries ever increasing traffic is only single lane with disintegrating bitumen and muddy sides.

Drivers passing or facing other vehicles are forced to drive on the muddy side or gravel deposited there by an increasing number of area-loving walkers.

Is there council staff responsible for organising the repair of this road before an accident happens?

Let’s not blow it

The election is over but it seems that some people are still sulking because things did not go the way they thought it should.

While I respect others’ opinions, to go charging into change as Labor promised would have been a disaster we could not have survived.

I also would like to see all the coal mines shut down but it has to be a gradual process. It is a pity the two parties could not get together to work out the best way!

Are either of them really serious? Have they looked in the supermarkets lately? Almost everything is wrapped in plastics of some sort!

For example, in my local supermarket I can no longer buy the amount of bacon I want because it is in kilo packs as the deli section has been closed and now everything is in plastic on refrigerated shelves.

Half the fruit and veges are the same and most of the goods we buy anywhere are over packed.

We build mega-sized shopping centres that attract shoppers from up to 50km away. Imagine the pollution from all those travellers! It also means acres of concrete and metal blasting heat back into our atmosphere.

How about acres of solar panels? The ground around them will become dust bowls and they will blast reflected heat back into the atmosphere.

Could go on and on but all I am saying is - let us think before we charge in. Yes, it is urgent but not as urgent as it will be - if we blow it!

Am I the only one who has had many stone chips and a few broken windscreens caused by rocks thrown out by quarry trucks on Steve Irwin Way and Coonowrin Road at Glass House Mountains?

Could the management please ask their drivers to make sure their loads are covered properly and the trays on the sides of the trucks swept down to avoid this problem?

Knit for good this winter

Throughout June and July the Mooloolah Valley Guardian Pharmacy is asking locals once again to turn their knitting needles to a good cause as part of the Guardian Angel Knitting Program, which is now in its 21st year.

They are keen to spread the word to talented local knitters to encourage them to donate knitted garments including beanies, scarves, jumpers and baby blankets that will be distributed to Vinnies shops and services in a bid to provide the 105,000 homeless Australians with warm winter wear.

People wanting to become a ‘Guardian Angel’ can visit the Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy to pick up a free knitting book full of patterns for garments, or go to the website to download it.

The finished goods need to be dropped back at the pharmacy by July 21.

Ruth Zerner, of the Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy, said that the program was testament to Guardian Pharmacy’s commitment to supporting the local communities in which it operates.

Out & About 60 years of ladies bowls in Glass House Last Monday the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club celebrated 60 years since the ladies joined the Queensland Ladies Bowls Association in October 1959, with a President’s Day competition and a celebratory lunch at Club Glass House.

The history of bowls in Glass House Mountains dates from 1936 when a small group of local men established an invitation-only club.

It wasn’t until 1952 that the men extended an invitation to women to give the game a try, with the men offering to give them some coaching.

Some of the ladies enjoyed it very much and by April that year they had formed their own club and eventually were able to meet the entry requirements of the bowls association.

Descendants of some of the founding members of the club attended the celebration and shared their childhood memories of the club’s development over the years.

Celebration of a book and an author The recent launch of ‘Sundowner of the Skies: Oscar Garden, the forgotten aviator’ a book written by Oscar Garden’s daughter Mary Garden - at the Maleny RSL was both a celebration of Oscar’s story and the long journey it took for Mary to make it happen.

Guests at the launch got into the spirit of the event by wearing their 1930s fashions in a show of solidarity with the time of Oscar’s aviation achievements.

Governor opens Glenferna

It was all action at the Maleny Pioneer Village last Saturday for the official opening of the historic Maleny farmhouse Glenferna and an open day for the village.

Both the sun and the village shined brightly when the doors were thrown open to show off what happens in the many buildings that make up the village, including the Men’s Shed and the Blacksmith’s Shop as well as in rooms at Lawley House.

The Horseless Carriage Club had a number of historical vehicles on display that received quite a few envious glances from visitors.

There were photographic displays, demonstrations, tasty treats and live musical entertainment by the Ukulele Club.

Can you tell me what this plant is? It’s growing along our roadside at Peachester – not much, just a couple of plants.

Hi Gail. It’s called Mexican poppy and generally isn’t a problem in this part of the country. It likes to grow in disturbed soil and mostly pops up when seeds are accidently transported with slashers, machinery and contaminated soil or turf.

As the name suggests, it originates from the mid-tropical Americas but has been in Australia for many years. It’s a real problem in the Northern Territory where it spreads down waterways.

Here it’s more of a nuisance due to how prickly the leaves are, although it is listed as a poisonous plant to stock animals and poultry.

Best control is to hand pull … wearing gloves … and dispose of it in your wheelie bin.

It’s that time of year when the temperature starts to drop and our native wildlife need to start eating their fill to keep warm - and hopefully put on a bit of fat to keep them going through the cooler months.

The best way to help the wildlife isn’t to feed them up with titbits from the kitchen but with gardens full of native plants.

Plants that flower throughout the year (in particular during the winter months) are a boon for bees and other insects that feed on nectar and pollen. One of our favourites for this is Plectranthus alloplectus, a groundcover growing to about 75cm that flowers well in winter.

Banksia spinulosa (hairpin banksia) is flowering beautifully at the moment and is a great food source for nectar-eating birds.

For the fruit-eating birds and possums, plants like native raspberry (Rubus probus), celerywood (Polyscias elegans) and plum myrtle (Pilidiostigma glabrum) can be good sources of winter fruits.

As always in South-East Queensland, with our amazing biodiversity, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Plant nectar-producing, insect-hosting and fruiting shrubs, trees and vines to keep the birds and other wildlife fed and warm.

We are fortunate to have two native citrus in South-East Queensland. First is our very own round lime (Citrus australis), a bushy small tree in the garden at 4-8m in height. The fruit are a decent size, at up to 7cm across, with a pleasant lime flavour but relatively dry. However, they are great for marmalades and providing a lime favour in cooking. Round limes grow naturally on the Blackall Range and were often kept as paddock trees to provide fruit to early European settlers. Their growth rate is moderate (similar to other citrus) and they can take on a nice bushy form. Although very spiky when young, they tend to lose this as they mature.

Next up is the finger lime (Citrus australasica). These aren’t native to the Sunshine Coast, naturally occurring further south from Beenleigh to Ballina.

However, the finger lime is very well known as a high-profile plant due to its popularity in the growing bushfood industry. It is naturally a much smaller tree, growing to only a few metres in the garden, especially if grafted onto a rootstock. They are open in form compared to other citrus with a small leaf and tend to retain their prickly nature throughout their life. The distinctive finger-shaped fruit can grow up to 8cm long and come in a variety of colours including greens, yellows, reds and black. The flesh, again, isn’t overly juicy but can be squeezed out of the skin as separate little juicy balls – like lime caviar, great in drinks, salads, desserts.

The leaves of both these native limes are food sources for several butterflies including the dainty swallowtail, capaneus swallowtail, orchard swallowtail and ambrax swallowtail. This is a good thing as they are all beautiful butterflies and it’s good to share! The spiky growth on these small trees also makes them a great refuge for smaller birds and a safe spot for their nests.

Add some native zest to your garden with one or both of these native limes beautiful, abundant and great habitat plants that they are.

Snow wood Pararchidendron pruinosum var. pruinosum In the garden, this stunning small tree provides a spectacle of fluffy pom pom white to greenish fragrant flowers, later turning to yellow from October to January. To forgive or not to forgive?

How difficult it is for us to forgive! When someone has wronged us our natural response is to retaliate but instead Jesus tells us that we should forgive. Literally, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;to forgiveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; translates as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;to put awayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; as in a debt that is cancelled. Forgiveness means not to seek retribution but to cancel out a penalty, clearing the way for life apart from the debt. We can also remind ourselves that we have all done something wrong and that there is some good and bad in all of us.

In a culture that so often demands revenge and retaliation, forgiveness is a counter-cultural. It requires courage and grace. Forgiveness does not condone evil and does not necessarily require us to forget. What it does require is release from the negativity, letting go of the bitterness allowing for healing and liberation. Desmond Tutu declared that forgiveness draws out â&#x20AC;&#x153;the sting of the memory that threatens to poison our entire existenceâ&#x20AC;? and once the sting is removed, the past is redeemed granting us wisdom for the

An unforgiving heart is a barrier that affects our relationships with others and can be destructive to our physical and mental wellbeing. When we hold on to resentment and bitterness, we are punishing not the other person but ourselves. We dig a deep pit of victimisation and are imprisoned by the past. This can also apply to the act of forgiving ourselves â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we need to let go of regrets and negativity permitting ourselves to move on.

When Peter asked Jesus how often to forgive, Jesus responded with â&#x20AC;&#x153;seventy times seven timesâ&#x20AC;?! Forgiveness is therefore not defined by quantity but should be limitless! As Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s love and forgiveness towards us is beyond anything that we could ask for or deserve, so our forgiveness towards each other should be without limits.

Forgiveness transforms our lives, our communities and the world. Justice and peace in the world require merciful love and forgiveness rather than violence. Forgiveness can be difficult, but with Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s help it is possible and ultimately can be the most powerful weapon for transforming ourselves and the world.

Sport Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Miles Allen The clubhouse is looking wonderful after Dave Burgess and Dan Peterson started painting the front. It’s hard work watching them meticulously apply the paint while taking on all the advice they receive but nothing distracts these two artists from doing a great job.

On Tuesday morning in beautiful weather for bowls (not too hot, not too cold and no wind) Joe Walters and Margaret Ginns won the pairs and Richard Bond, Doug McGufficke and John Kapetanic won the triples competition.

On Wednesday morning a team of four bowlers went to Kilcoy for their monthly competition.

In both games they got off to a flying start but couldn’t maintain the momentum. Drawn against two of the best teams on the day, they won the first game and narrowly lost the second. They went home knowing they had maintained the reputation of Maleny Bowls Club for competitive and friendly play.

On Wednesday night some new rules were introduced that tested our skills with our bowls and maths. Tom Ukkola’s team showed the opposition the importance of getting near the jack. Ian Chatterton’s Outlaws welcomed back Christine and they gave a lesson to the Tutors who, even with a new player, were narrowly beaten. Dave Coffey and his team bounced back onto the green with vigour and showed that a short break can sometimes be beneficial. Jim King’s Kingston Trio narrowly lost but never gave

up. Dennis Kyling and Paul Kemp played Tony Yorkston and Steve Porter but the result was too close to call.

The new twilight bowls competition starts this Wednesday, June 26 and we are looking for teams to join in the fun. Come along at 6pm for a burger and bowls and if you haven’t got a team, we’ll find one for you.

Last Friday the last round of scroungers was played with four players competing for three places in the finals. Congratulations to Don Ginns, Denis Kyling and Richard Bond for reaching the finals. Mick Bulger narrowly missed out but is on the reserves bench. It should be a close game on Friday with all players on very similar handicaps.

The Kool Kats were victorious in the last match before the finals but the Wagtails' spirit is strong. We look forward to another great season of tennis fitness, fun and company. Whistlers played at Caloundra against the Hot Chillies. Nice warm weather and, as usual, we had long rallies and lots of deuces. We were exhausted by the end but got to bring a win back so it was a good day. Score was 45-22 games, 6-2 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper.

The Wildcats were at home to Coolum Tourists.

It was another battle and another close one.

Libby Howlett, Stacey English, Jenie Riding and Michelle Macaree fought hard but were pipped at the post. The score was four sets each, 3639. With only one game left and two points separating six teams it’s anyone’s game.

Sport The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Both lawns were used on Thursday with three games of golf played on lawn two. Helen Andrews and Wallace Roy went down to Bev Sockhill and Sally Adams 5–7, but Helen and Wal-lace turned the tables in games two and three to triumph 7–1 and 7–6.

On lawn one Kath Smith defeated Frances Harper 7-4 while Ken Barker was well beaten by Nick Cram 12-14.

On Saturday, June 8 the club fielded a team consisting of Sarah Widin, Kath and Frances to play against Headland Buderim in the Bray Shield competition. Headland’s team were Diane Horsham, Garry Shaw, Lesley Johnston and Carolyn Aldrich. In the singles Sarah defeated Diane 18–15 in an exciting game where she made the deciding break after time was called.

Kath went down to Garry in a close 15–17 but Frances and Sarah were soundly beaten by Leslie and Carolyn 6-18. Well played all players.

Headland won the round two games to one.

Ken Barker played in the ACA Patron’s trophy on a bleak Saturday followed by a beautiful Sunday and Monday at Wynnum club. He lost every game. The event was well run and play was exciting. Wynnum were good hosts.

Congratulations to all who played in this prestigious and enjoyable event, which is great for croquet in Queensland.

One game of association was played on Sunday, June 9. Sarah and Wallace were beaten by Nick and Vince Carbery 14–12.

Noosa Croquet Club visited on Wednesday, June 14. Their team of John Olsen and Galena Makarovna won their singles games against Ken and Nick. John beat Ken 26-20 and Galena beat Nick 17-14. The doubles went to Maleny 21-18 with Nick and Vince getting up in an ex-citing match. Noosa won the round two games to one.

Well done.

Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays.

These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

Our treasurer Bruce Angus gave a most informative talk on the history of our club followed by memories of local residents Allan Smerdon, David Gower and Ken Fullerton.
