With only just over a month until the Sunshine Coast Council election you will have noticed that, once again, we have been making sure we keep readers up to date with all things relating to the election.

However, we understand that with so many candidates - in Division 5 nine candidates have thrown their hat into the ring, four for Division 1 and four Mayoral candidates - we know it is difficult to find out who they are and what they see as important.

Since late last year we have been including stories about each of the divisional candidates and in next week’s edition we have offered the Mayoral candidates the same opportunity.

We are going to combine all of the information that the candidates have provided about themselves on our website from the end of February.

Effectively creating a one-stop information shop on our website for all local candidates, hopefully this will make life easier for those of you who get election fatigue trying to access information for all of your voting choices.

Cover Story Kindness blooms in the community On Valentine’s Day last Friday a group of Landsborough State School students presented red roses, with affirmation notes attached, to community members to practise and encourage kindness, and hope and peace towards others.

The recipients of the roses, most of them strangers, were delighted by the kind gesture.

The Kindness Club was launched at Landsborough State School last year by school chaplain Linda Whysall as a way to encourage students to value others, show kindness and to appreciate those in our community.

The club has participated in a number of kindness projects.

Now, with support from Sunshine Coast Council, Chappy Linda and the students will undertake five activities in the local Landsborough community to spread kindness in a number of ways.

The first was handing out the roses, or Chappy Linda with kindness blooms, on the basket of roses Valentine’s Day.

2020 Council Election countdown Saturday, March 28, 2020

Julie Savage candidate for Division 1 Julie Diane Savage has lived in Beerwah for 30 years and says she absolutely loves the place and all the people in it.

"The reason I’m put my hat in the ring to contest Division 1 is that I believe if you want something done, don't complain … do something about it," Julie said.

"I care about my community and its people. I am a practising Justice of the Peace (qualified) and also have a certificate IV in government.

"My aim as a councillor is to support our local area, our local community and our local people. I believe it is important for all people to feel like they have a place in the community.

"My concerns for Division 1 are many," Julie said.

She said these concerns included local roads being safe to drive, enough parking areas, disability access wherever it is needed, safe parks for children to play in, safe areas around schools, and responsible dog ownership and control beyond the over-protective dog that barks in the back yard sometimes.

"I believe it is important to talk and liaise with state and federal government representatives about issues that may affect our area. And I believe that in those discussions, the councillor should have the strength to put their foot down and not just take no for an answer," Julie said.

Other issues she believes need more attention from council include fire prevention and management, flood protection and mosquito control.

"I am happy to be able to put myself forward as a genuine alternative for Division 1."

Julie said she looked forward to meeting and hearing from residents of Division 1 over the coming weeks.

Future of affordable housing celebrated

After four years of planning, fundraising and hard work by Compassionate Housing Affordability Solutions Maleny (CHASM), the group’s first affordable home in the Maple Street Co-op’s community garden was officially opened last Saturday by Cr Jenny McKay. Margaret McKenzie of CHASM said the group had raised funds by baking cakes, selling raffle tickets and even dancing with drag queens, but it had all been worth it.

Margaret also acknowledged that they had some very generous donations and a major grant from the Whitehouse Foundation that allowed them to complete the project.

“We contracted local builder Ross Meneely to help with the installation of the home and he’s been fantastic to work with and assisted us greatly,” Margaret said.

Inside the house

CHASM’s vision is for a compassionate and sustainable community where everyone has a home they can afford. The launch of their first home will be a showcase to others on how they can invest in their own back yard.

“We are expecting to be able to rent the home out for approximately $180 per week and when you consider the price of a unit to rent in Maleny that is probably half the price. It is very affordable housing," Margaret said.

“With the ever-growing Airbnb many locals have taken their permanent rental homes off the market to take advantage of the Airbnb market, which has created a situation where there are fewer rentals, which is the first issue facing Maleny.

“Then comes the issue of having affordable housing. If you are a person on a pension by the time you pay rent there is not much left for other essentials let alone having some spare money for unexpected expenses or to just pop out and have a coffee.

“This can be quiet isolating as the less money one has to spend, the more home bound they become, therefore missing out on social interactions,” Margaret said.

Following the official opening, community members were given the opportunity to take a look inside the home.

In July and September 2015 the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre conducted two housing conversations with over 50 attendees at each event, including many concerned community members, service club representatives, housing service workers, government officials, the local council member and the state MP. CHASM emerged from this community consultation process with the aim of addressing the issue of housing affordability in the area.

Work under way on Maleny Settlers Green Work is progressing on the garden component of the Maleny Settlers Green in the Maleny Community Precinct following a successful $20,000 funding application by the Rotary Club of Maleny under the federal Communities Environment Program.

Maleny Settlers Green project team chair Mike Norman said the park had been designed by professional landscape designers Greenedge Design Consultants, who also designed the walking trails for Sunshine Coast Council on the precinct to create a wildlife habitat corridor for rare and endangered local endemic and native species.

“These works have received approval from council so our volunteer project team has been able to get started on the preparation work," Mike said.

“We are looking forward to being able to establish a designated butterfly garden close to the play area for children that will also complement the butterflyattracting vegetation program already implemented on the adjoining Maleny Golf course,” he said.

Volunteer workforce get started on the preparations

Representatives from the community groups involved in the project Photography by Marsha Kelly The number of community groups involved in the overall project has recently expanded with members of the Historical Society and Friends of Pattemore House undertaking the research and stories required for the historical interpretative panels planned for the park.

The Maleny Garden Club will also be undertaking research, looking at funding options as well as planting and taking care of a grove of rare heritage camellias, with some species under threat from drought and fire.

Mike said they were working with Karen and Spencer Shaw from Brush Turkey Enterprises, as well as David Lowden Tree Services, which meant all funds would be spent with local businesses.

Work is expected to be completed on the native plant garden beds and avenue of specimen native trees before the end of this financial year.

The group’s goal is to have the whole park completed by the end of 2020 or early 2021, with the work broken up into stages to enable the volunteer workforce to manage it successfully.

Funding is still being sought for the remaining stage and most expensive element, which is the equipment in the children’s play area.

Show Maleny some love

With Valentine’s Day smack bang in the middle of February, the Maleny Commerce committee decided it was the perfect time to run another Live Love Shop Maleny campaign.

Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton said the chamber kicked off the initiative last year as a way of reminding locals of the importance of spending their Alan Harrington dollars with local businesses in the community and with his gift basket thanking them for their support. “When we spend money locally with the many small businesses in Maleny it keeps dollars in our local community and it helps create jobs and to pay wages for local people, but more than that it helps us keep the mix of businesses in town that we all rely on for our day-to-day activities,� Nicole said.

The current campaign started on Valentine's Day and will run until March 14.

When you spend $25 or more in any of the 94 businesses participating in the campaign you go into the draw to win a $500 debit card.

The winner will be chosen by a random draw on Friday, March 20 and notified by telephone and published on the Maleny Commerce Facebook page.

Nicole said that in the campaign held in the lead up to Christmas the $500 debit card was won by Maleny locals Jim and Gail Carseldine who were absolutely chuffed with the prize.

"For our Christmas campaign Maleny IGA also generously donated a gift hamper valued at $250, which was won by Alan Harrington from Conondale," Nicole said.

Places & faces End of an era

By Sonia Clark Landsborough Network Video Store on Cribb Street closed its doors for good last week, heralding the end of an era. Operated by local Wilfred ‘Wilf’ Rocker since 2009, the store originally opened 30 years ago as a VHS co-op store and had members of all ages from all over the Sunshine Coast.

The closure marks the end of Network Video stores in Queensland and it was one of the last video (DVD) rental stores on the Sunshine Coast.

GC&M News caught up with Wilf during the final windup of the long running business.

Q: After so many years why did you decide to close?

A: To be honest, it has been a rollercoaster of a ride over the past 11 years. Five years ago I nearly went broke and had to look at ways to restructure costs to remain viable.

Around that same time three other local hinterland video store operators (Maleny, Beerwah and Mooloolah) were forced to close their doors. However, using my knowledge as a bookkeeper I was able to look at ways to bring costs down and with the support of customers I remained in business. Actually, for quite a while business went gangbusters and I was seeing a steady increase of trade. However, over the past six months business has really dropped off dramatically.

The rise of smart televisions, the increases in the advertising presence of popular streaming services and the targeted increase of paid advertisements/

internet search preference given to larger video and DVD retailers - along with a flawed business model for many of the chain video stores - meant I finally had to make the tough decision to pull the pin as I just couldn’t compete with the marketing pressure from the big guys anymore.

Q: How did your customers react to the news?

A: Well, some customers were quite upset and we even had some walk in and cry! Over the past two weeks of business the store had a fire sale on around 8,000 DVDs, which I had advertised in the week leading up to the sale on local community pages and marketplaces. On the first day of the sale I had 150 people turn up, with the line out front all the way down the street to the pub! It has been a bittersweet time to see the store so busy at the end.

Q: With most of the stock cleared out what will you do with the store fixtures?

A: I was planning to flat pack up all the shelving and take it to the dump. However, out of nowhere a random person called me up from Brisbane and said he’d come up and take it all. It turned out he was a member of the VHS Association of Queensland and he was planning to recreate a nostalgic video shop setting under his house in Chermside.

Q: What have you loved the most about running your business for the past 11 years?

A: Probably the most appealing aspect has been the social interaction with customers. People would come in and have a chat about movies and

it was a great place to socialise and have a yarn with others. I made sure that all the staff were movie goers and one of our rules was that you always had to provide an honest opinion if asked by the customers, which I think people really appreciated. It was also great to see the kids that came in with their families when I started have now grown up and they’d bring their kids in.

Q: What are your future plans?

A: I’m planning to return to my other profession as a full-time bookkeeper. While I am very proud of having run the video store, I am looking forward to my first holiday in 11 years. I’m planning to head to one of the local beaches, rent an apartment for a couple of weeks and chill out with some books and DVDs, which I’m obviously not short of!

With nine candidates so far, the battle to claim the title of councillor for Division 5 at the upcoming Sunshine Coast Council elections is definitely hotting up.

The Maleny and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Maleny Commerce) last week held a meet-the-candidates breakfast at the Maleny Hotel.

With around 50 in attendance, the crowd heard from eight of the nine candidates - Tracie Sanim, Kiti Bruinsma, Winston Johnston, Tracy Burton, Clive Waring, Charles Hodgson, Greg Cutlack and Greg Williams (James Grimard gave his apologies).

They all clearly voiced their passion for the region, so whoever is the eventual victor will definitely have the best interests of Division 5 at the forefront of their minds.

Coles application process stalled As a result of Sunshine Coast Council flagging significant problems with the proposed Coles development on the corner of Steve Irwin Way and Roys Road at Beerwah, the applicant – Coles Group Property Developments Ltd – has requested the assessment clock be stopped to allow time to consider council’s information requests.

The plans are currently for a Coles supermarket, McDonald’s, petrol station, retail showroom, hardware/nursery, gym, bulky goods homemaker centre and a zone for service/light industry development on the 16.5ha site, with a new access road and entrances off Roys Road and Steve Irwin Way. Council has agreed to extend the deadline to September 2 for Coles Group Property Developments to address council's concerns.

Council is not alone in flagging concerns with the development.

The state agency tasked with scrutinising developments that may impact on its assets (in this case Steve Irwin Way) has also formally recorded significant issues.

The State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) advised the developer that “…direct access to the state-controlled road (Steve Irwin Way) is not currently supported”.

SARA has concerns that the plans, as presented, have the potential to worsen the safety and traffic conditions on Steve Irwin Way. “Everyone’s lives have been touched in some way by cancer so my team and I make it our mission in life to raise as much money as we possibly can each year. Receiving this award on stage with my beautiful team beside me was so incredibly special and a moment I will treasure forever,” Jodi said.

Jodi, who has been with the company for 15 years, said she was honoured to have been presented with the highly sought after Peter Ryan Award 2019 award.

Along with her award, Jodi received a beautiful 56-piece Robert Welch cutlery set and a Thomas Sabo sterling silver and white zirconia charm as prizes.

Community News Celebrating International Women’s Day On Sunday, March 8 the QCWA Beerwah branch will host an International Women's Day morning tea at its hall in Beerwah. The theme for Queensland Women’s Week 2020, which runs from March 6-15, is to celebrate our diverse community of strong women and the valuable contributions they make to Queensland.

The Beerwah morning tea is an opportunity for friends and family to come together, share a cuppa and some delicious food and be inspired by three amazing women living in the local community.

Rhonda Hetzel is a retired journalist and technical Rhonda Hetzel writer best known for her award-winning blog, 'Down to Earth'. Rhonda lives with her husband Hanno in Landsborough, where they happily tend a food garden, living sustainably, having discovered the power of their own home. Rhonda's book 'Down to Earth' covers simple living, finding happiness, growing your own food, home cooking, baking, sewing, mending, recycling and family, to name a few. She will share her wisdom and ideas for us to move forwards by going back to basics.

The second speaker is the QCWA Nambour North Coast division president Patsy Lee talking about the QCWA, which was established in 1922. The Queensland Country Women's Association is the Queensland chapter of the Country Women's Association in Australia.

The third speaker will be QCWA Beerwah branch member Jenny Broderick from Glass House. She is a wife, mother of four, community volunteer, business owner and now a candidate for the upcoming Sunshine Coast Council elections. She will share the joys and challenges of balancing all of her roles and what she has learned through her journey so far.

A morning tea will be provided by the Beerwah QCWA ladies and the cost is a gold coin donation. 25th film festival on its way

The Australian Film Festival is a well-established event in the hinterland's cultural calendar and this year is the festival's 25th.

Previously the festival was held on a weekend close to Australia Day but following the success of last year's event it is now held in mid-March, which has resulted in better patronage and allowed organisers more time to prepare a film-lover’s feast.

Festival coordinator Andrew Wallace said that, as always, the festival was a selection of some of the most well-made, thought-provoking and entertaining films made in this country recently, with seven full-length films and four shorts screening across the weekend.

“Our festival guest is Peter Hegedus whose film 'Lili' was a hit at the Brisbane Film Festival. Following the screening of 'Lili' there will be a Q&A with Peter about the film," Andrew said.

“Another director and film-maker, Jaina Kalifa, will be present to talk about his documentary 'Happy Android',” he said.

The film festival will be held at the Maleny Community Centre from Friday, March 13 to Sunday, March 15.

There will be a particular focus on youth, with a screening on Saturday and two in the daytime on Sunday suitable for family viewing.

Two of the short films are the work of senior students from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The Sunday morning discussion session will be a great opportunity for young people to meet film educators and industry professionals.

township being abandoned because of it.

In 1881, James Campbell (1830-1904) established a saw mill on Coochin Creek to process timber from the Blackall Range and the surrounding district. A small settlement grew and was known as Campbellville.

The saw mill was built on the banks of Coochin Creek just below its junction with Mellum Creek. The mill site was established about four miles (6.5km) up Coochin Creek from the Pumicestone Passage so fresh water could be obtained for the mill’s boiler.

Before the mill was built, timber was hauled to a rafting ground on the western side of Mellum Creek. The location was known as the Mellum Creek rafting ground where rafts were formed by rolling a number of logs into the creek and fastening them together with chains and a dog spike driven into the log.

The log rafts were then floated downstream on the outgoing tide and steered by men standing on the logs using long poles. On reaching the Pumicestone Passage the timber was then dragged by steamer to Brisbane.

The fledgling township developed into an important trading centre for the early settlers of the Blackall Range. Inigo Jones (1872-1954) was a household name throughout Australia.

His many supporters - especially country people - followed his weather forecasts with avid interest.

Inigo never claimed to forecast precisely to the day, although there were some notable cases where that did happen.

His mission was to “predict the character of the coming season”. He believed that an understanding of Australia’s extreme weather patterns would be crucial to the future of primary industries in this country.

Twenty years in 2020

Firies' benefit concert

By Sandy Johnson Twenty years ago, 15 children began school as the first students of Glasshouse Christian College (known then as Glasshouse Country Christian College) when it opened in January 2000. Two decades later five of those students were able to travel back to join in the special commemoration anniversary on Friday, February 7.

Glasshouse Christian College (GCC) founding students included Elouyse Murray, Jackie Waddell, Sara Davis, Joshua Davis and Mitchell Fraser. After the formal service and during morning tea the original students gathered to recreate the first school photo at GCC. Two of GCC’s original staff members, Muriel

Pickles and Kirsty Newell, also posed for a thenand-now photo.

The original students and staff were taken on a college tour where they were amazed at the changes since that first day when there were only two demountable rooms.

The school now has a multitude of classrooms, a modern library, theatre, industrial technology and engineering workshops, a fantastic gym, hospitality kitchens, science labs, brand new dance and drama studios, a state of the art music centre, kitchen garden, three playgrounds, two large undercover areas, two ovals, two courtyards and access to a full working farm!

The popular Buderim Male Choir will come to Beerwah Community Hall on Sunday, March 15 to present a special program - Best of the Best in recognition of the work and dedication of our fire fighters.

Buderim Male Choir The choir will be donating part of the takings to the Beerwah and District Rural Fire Brigade.

The Buderim Male Choir has a long history of supporting community organisations across the Sunshine Coast since its formation in 1974.

On this occasion, the choir will be supported by the recently formed Sunshine Brass led by Keith Dowsett.

The community is invited to an information session at Maleny Masonic Lodge to learn about why men’s health matters on Friday, February 28 from 7pm.

You will earn more about nutrition and physical activity, early detection of cancer, important check ups for men, diabetes and heart disease, mental health and wellbeing as well as relationships.

This event is by Hand Heart Pocket, the charity of Freemasons Queensland, and the Sunshine Coast Freemasons in partnership with CheckUP, a notfor-profit organisation dedicated to better health for people and communities who need it most.

Sunshine Brass Songs included in the Beerwah program have been selected from the most appreciated by audiences from programs presented in 2019.

They include 'Hallelujah', 'My way', 'Can’t help falling in love', 'Let it be me', 'Ghost riders in the sky', 'Danny Boy', 'You’ll never walk alone', 'Down by the river side' and more.

The audience will be encouraged to participate in community singing by joining the men to sing some of their favourite songs.

Adult admission to the concert will be by $20 donation, with students and children free.

Afternoon tea will be served.

Community Groups Glass House grants

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is thrilled that round 102 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) has brought more than $145,000 in grants to the Glass House electorate.

“This is the first round of grants to be rolled out in 2020 and once again we’ve had a great outcome in Glass House," Mr Powell said.

“My hope is that this really sets the tone for grants being awarded to this part of the world for the rest of the year.”

The fund provides one-off grants to Queensland not-for-profit community organisations with revenue sourced from gaming taxes, distributing about $53 million a year to Queensland communities.

“These grants offset the costs community organisations face in maintaining or upgrading their premises. They also enable them to provide further resources or expand their services to the community,” Mr Powell said.

The successful recipients at Glass House Mountains were Beerwah Glasshouse United Football Club ($34,490 to buy portable dugouts and equipment) and the Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club ($29,000 to buy a cricket pitch roller).

In Maleny and Witta, the Maleny Show Society received $35,000 to install a bore and water tank, and purchase irrigation equipment, the Maleny State High School P&C received $35,000 to upgrade multi-purpose flooring for the hall and the Old Witta School Community Centre received $5,429 to purchase a ride-on mower.

“It’s also great to see the high school and show society receiving the maximum funding amount of $35,000, enabling them to get started on some major projects.

“I would like to congratulate each of these groups on their success in this round and I encourage organisations within Glass House to apply for funding in the next round. As you can see, our local area has a high success rate when it comes to grants,” he said.

Support needed for hall

Most Glass House Mountains locals would know the town has a wonderful community hall that celebrated its centenary of serving the local community back in 2016.

The hall committee is keen to extend an invitation to locals to attend its up and coming annual general meeting on Sunday, February 23 at 4pm at the hall in Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains, Some younger mature people are needed to join the committee, especially people who are happy to do some volunteer work around the hall as well as attending monthly meetings on the fourth Sunday of each month at 4pm.

Beerwah Sportsground improvements

Contributed by Helen Weil There is always something happening at the sportsground and the latest addition to our facilities for the community is a new two-plate barbeque.

It is located adjacent to the old barbeque in the shady, grassed area behind the main building with a clean-up bench and sink nearby.

It’s great for family picnics and small gatherings and available to use at no charge.

The project was proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council’s grants program in addition to Beerwah Sportsground's own funds.

Thank you also to a much appreciated small grant from Glasshouse Mountains Rotary Club to put the final touches to this excellent picnic facility. Do come down and use the new barbeques.

Another recent improvement has been the resurfacing of the hard courts through a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant obtained by the Beerwah State High School. These hardcourts are a joint facility initially built in an agreement between the council, Education Queensland and the Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee. They are located on the sportsground and are available for use by the community in out-of-school hours. Sadly, this hasn’t happened as their availability has not been publicised.

If there are sporting groups or individuals wanting a venue to play tennis, basketball or netball, these courts may well be what you are looking for and we encourage your interest.

You Said It Roys Road downgrade

In the lead up to the Sunshine Coast Council election Cr Rick is once again blowing his own trumpet about all the projects he has delivered for our region.

Can he explain why the Roys Road works took so long? The original signage indicated the works would be completed in October 2019. What is the cause of the delays and what has it cost ratepayers for yet another council stuff up? The new speed signs have gone up and the speed limit has dropped, which is hard to understand when council has redone the road surface, incorporated a sufficient shoulder and a turn lane into the forestry road.

Thank you for your letter Scott. I am happy to answer your questions.

The Roys Road upgrade is a major project and it was scheduled to take around eight months. This has been delayed by around another 3-4 months due to two main factors.

First, as work progressed, the team encountered several areas where poor ground conditions would not enable a suitable road foundation.

This required extensive rock treatment that was not part of the original schedule. Second, there have been several key periods during construction (especially during winter) where seasonally unusual weather slowed down construction.

The current speed signs are not the final speeds for the road. The final speed limit will be determined by an independent process and is expected to be resolved in March or April. The 60km roadwork signs will be removed upon completion of line marking.

I’m not sure what makes this a “council stuff up” as you call it. Should I have insisted that we build the road without an adequate foundation just so we could meet a schedule? I’m sure that when the road started falling apart, a lot more people would have been calling it a “stuff up”.

It’s always frustrating for everyone involved when a construction project turns out to be more complicated or extensive than expected. However, I believe you should do it right so that you only have to do it once.

Droughts and bush fires

Several recent letters blame our bush fires on climate change and they are partially correct.

A well known, very strong climate event that occurs every 10 years or so called the Positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), is the main driver of the hot temperatures and drought over the past six months.

This provided ideal conditions for ignition of the high fuel loads in our forests and though the sources of that ignition vary, insurance loss adjusters use around 80% for the percentage of bush fires lit by humans either accidently or deliberately and that is unlikely to change.

Some letters blame the global warming of 1oC in the past 100 years but as daily summer temperatures in South East Australia can have a range of 37oC from around 10oC to 47oC that 1oC must have magical properties.

Happily the IOD has now dissipated and the late onset of western cyclones and the northern monsoon is bringing much needed rain.

TV presenters constantly claiming that the drought and bush fires are “unprecedented” (never happened before or existed in the past) need some history lessons.

The federation drought from 1896 to 1903 was far worse and also the one from 1958 to 1968. In 1974-75, when weather was wetter and cooler than average, bushfires burnt out 16 million hectares in South Australia, 7.3 million ha in Queensland and 4.5 million ha in NSW and in the destructive 1939 Victorian fires 2 million ha were burnt. The only difference this summer is that a larger area of NSW has been devastated.

We all want to forget bad events but as Winston Churchill said “those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”.

Decision a disgrace

The decision of the French-owned food giant Lactalis to close down its Rockhampton factory and scale back production in South Brisbane straight after it was awarded a lucrative contract by Labor is a disgrace.

The Palaszczuk Labor government should never have awarded the contract in the first place to Lactalis over the 100 per cent Queensland owned and operated Maleny Dairies.

Labor’s Buy Queensland policy is meant to give preference to local businesses in the regions when government contracts are awarded.

Why wasn’t due diligence undertaken to ensure Lactalis would not close its Rockhampton milk factory and sack its 47 workers only three weeks after it pocketed the lucrative government contract?

In regional Queensland especially, we need small and medium-sized businesses to grow and create badly needed new jobs.

The closure of the Rockhampton factory is a massive blow to Queensland’s dairy industry and means more milk and dairy products from other states and overseas will be sold in our state.

Lactalis is putting the profits of its foreign owners ahead of the jobs of Queensland workers and dairy farmers.

Labor is directly funding and supporting foreignowned companies who are happy to take profits overseas and cut and run from this state.

To make matters worse, Labor has repeatedly refused to overturn its flawed decision to award the contract to Lactalis.

It’s a massive blow to the credibility of Labor’s socalled Buy Queensland policy too.

It is now more important than ever that Labor reviews this flawed contract decision and backs a Queensland-owned business that backs local jobs.

Lack of public transport to hospital

Five years ago, I moved to Landsborough and was advised that Landsborough was the transport hub for the hinterland.

I love where I live but recently I discovered that there is no direct public transport service from Landsborough to the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Consequently, three weeks ago I emailed both Cr Rick Baberowski of Division 1 and our state member of parliament, Mark McArdle.

I am still waiting on a response from Mark McArdle but Rick Baberowski went in to bat for all we hinterland residents who use Landsborough as a transport hub.

He contacted Translink and was advised that they would not be opening a new route even if partly subsidised by council. Top marks for caring and thank you for trying, Cr Baberowski. He also had a member of council staff contact me to give me the existing travel options.

Currently the only options to get to the new main public hospital is to either take a bus to Caloundra and then connect with route 607 which goes via Currimundi to the hospital, or take the 615 bus to the university and then change to route 607 going to the hospital.

I would like to see the hinterland serviced with a route going via the hospital to the Kawana shopping centre in Buddina, which would give us another major shopping and movie theatre option besides Maroochydore when we need more than what Beerwah offers us.

Good to receive a reply from a councillor about my concerns with the new Glasshouse District Park printed in GC&M News (February 5).

There was a kangaroo that would come along my back fence and a possum that nested in one of my garden trees … but no more.

What about extending the forest corridor edge in the park, tapering the forest vegetation from tree height right down to the best possible native groundcovers, giving heaps of variety for bees and other creatures.

Cr Rick Baberowski did not address most of the issues I raised, with the biggest being the water use.

In a land of floods and droughts and bushfires, we should be doing better.

Lions Youth of the Year

As students settle back into school they are hopefully starting to plan for the range of activities they would like to get involved with outside the classroom.

One great opportunity for year 11 and 12 students to think about is the 2020 Lions Youth of the Year program.

My home has solar panels, solar heat pump for hot water, garbage disposal (council recommended), I sort our trash faithfully, reuse and recycle whenever I can and I mulch my entire yard with the stuff I mow, cut up and spread. I take seriously the fact that I am God’s steward of His creation.

But I have serious issues with our culture’s obsession on climate change. It is not that I reject the fact of climate change as a reality we need to address but rather, how we should go about it, and the complete and utter lack of reference to the creator God who made and maintains the universe by the power of his word.

A couple of weeks ago, the prognosticators of weather forecast (with all their scientific modelling and expertise) that there would be no rain in the foreseeable future after such a long drought and ravaging fires across the land. Most people just despaired at the gloom of such scientific wisdom and called for more action on the part of humans to do something to change things … anything … at any price.

Meanwhile there were godly Christian people who were busy each week praying for a much different outcome. Noting scriptural promises from God about caring for the earth, bringing forth the sunrise and sunset, rain and crops, livestock and blessings.

I think a good number of people were genuinely surprised when the thunderheads built up and the deluge began across Australia.

How did the climatologists get it so wrong? What didn’t they understand? And how are we to take seriously their predictions and formulations in the future? Now please understand that I do believe in the basics of science, but science without reference to Almighty God is not science at all.

Health &Wellbeing Children shine with a decline in screen time Queensland Health is urging parents to tune into its new mini documentary ‘Square Eyes’ in a bid to make future generations screen smart.

Health and Wellbeing Queensland chief executive officer Robyn Littlewood, who appears in the documentary, said parents often underestimated the amount of time kids devoted to their devices.

“We’re seeing a lot more kids on screens, for a lot more time than we think,” Dr Littlewood said.

“As soon as they’re home from school they might be on a screen and they’re staying there sometimes for up to more than five hours and stretching well into the night."

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Child Development Service program manager Vanessa Kyle said behavioural change would take time "but as parents, it’s so important for us to be great role models for our kids".

“Making sure our kids have a balanced approach to technology is the key. Try to avoid technology use replacing physical activity, sleep or spending time with others,” Vanessa said.

“Set the limits and then engage your children in how this could look for them across the day.

“Do they want to have their screen time all in the afternoon or some before or after dinner?

“There’s no hard and fast rules. Make it work for your family and just make sure you engage your children in the process, to empower them to make positive change.

Building officially re-opened

A classical feast for music lovers

After months of renovation work at the Glasshouse Country RSL, members and guests celebrated the official re-opening of the building last Saturday night by Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace.

Funding of $258,000 from the federal Community Development Grants scheme has gone towards upgrades and new equipment for the bar and dining areas, as well as increased space for military heritage displays, safety and security improvements, and a redesigned office area.

President Brian Machin said the refurbishment had transformed the inside of the building, which has had a dramatic impact on how the space functions.

Maleny Arts Council (MAC) is back with its first show of the year following a very successful 2019.

MAC is delighted to treat audiences to a magnificent music experience - In Recital, an intimate concert featuring two outstanding Australian chamber music performers.

Presented by Camerata - Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra, the recital showcases the talents of the orchestra’s leader and artistic director Brendan Joyce and rising star Alex Raineri on piano.

Brendan and Alex are joining forces for this unique event in Maleny, which will be their only performance outside Brisbane.

Both musicians have previously received rave reviews. The critics have said of Brendan that “it just doesn’t get much better than this”, and of Alex that “he shone as a soloist of superb virtuosic skill and musicality, leaving the audience with an audible buzz”.

It follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family, wealthy owners of Grantham Estate, a large country property. Of course, a home for the Earl of Grantham and his family needs an extensive staff to see to their every need and the staff members, with all their foibles and endearing characteristics, are an intrinsic part of the narrative. All the well-loved characters are there, including benevolent patriarch Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville), the irrepressible Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith), beautiful Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) and loyal head butler Mr Carson (Jim Carter), to mention just a few.

It is 1927 and excitement is heightened by the imminent visit of King George V and Queen Mary. The staff swing into a flurry of preparations, only to be thwarted when they learn that the royal couple travel with their own staff and attendants, rendering their roles redundant. Based on a real-life event, this period drama has been artfully conceived to appeal to a broad audience.

Creator and writer Julian Fellowes, social historian and member of the aristocracy (a baron, no less!), brings authenticity and realism to this unique and entertaining insight into an historical event. Not to be missed!

In the Garden Don’t let your plants go hungry Plants require soil nutrients to feed their growth, flowering and fruiting processes.

However, with the excessive rains we’ve had recently, soluble plant nutrients in your soil may have been dissolved and washed away, meaning that in the coming weeks your plants will be

ravenous for nourishment.

The three main plant nutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Together these macro-nutrients are known as NPK, which you will see listed on the side of fertiliser packets. Other important nutrients are calcium, magnesium and sulphur.

Plants also need small quantities of trace elements like iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron and molybdenum.

Here’s an outline of why these major nutrients are so vital to your plants.

Nitrogen (N) is a key element in plant growth. It is found in all plant cells, in plant proteins and hormones, and in chlorophyll (the green stuff in plants).

The atmosphere is a constant source of nitrogen, so over time your soil can get a supply of nitrogen from the air. Some plants (such as legumes) capture nitrogen from the air using special bacteria in their roots. However, if you need a quick top-up of soil nitrogen, you’ll need to add it in the form of a fertiliser or manure.

To be available to plants, the nitrogen needs to be converted into nitrate in the soil. Plants take up this nitrate via their roots when it is dissolved in soil moisture but this means that the soluble nitrates are easily washed from you soil during rains.

You will need to apply nitrogen in small amounts often over the coming weeks so that your plants get the best from the added nitrogen.

Phosphorus (P) helps with the energy production cycle in plants.

This is called photosynthesis and is where a plant can transform sunlight energy into sugars to use as energy within its cells.

Phosphorus also stimulates root and plant growth, and hastens fruit and seed maturity. It is an important element in the growth of new tissue, meaning that plants grow better when they have sufficient phosphorus available.

Australian soils are naturally low in phosphorus. This is good for natives such as banksias but not so good for food crops or ornamental flowers.

So we need to supplement our soils with phosphorus products – a common one is superphosphate (made from rock phosphate and sulphuric acid). All manures contain phosphorus, with manure from grain-fed animals having higher levels of phosphorus.

Again, it’s the soluble form of phosphorus that is available for plant roots to absorb in the soil moisture and it’s this form that is washed out of soils when it rains.

Potassium (K) is an important nutrient in plants and is generally required in fairly large amounts (second to nitrogen) for proper growth and production.

It is an important nutrient for the promotion of plant vigour and disease resistance, and is vital in processes that moves starches, sugars and oils in plants.

Potassium plays a major role in regulating the transpiration and loss of water from plants, so adequate potassium availability during dry times is important for drought resistance in plants.

Potassium is contained in soil minerals and slowly breaks down to become exchangeable potassium, ie, in a form that dissolves in the soil moisture and so can be absorbed by plant roots. It is – again – also the form that washes out when it rains.

To replace potassium, gardeners normally use a muriate of potash or a sulphate of potash product.

If you’re unsure about what is the best way to replace your soil nutrients, I’d recommend you have a chat to one of the local hardware, rural supply or garden nurseries. They’ll always have good ideas to get your garden into tiptop condition.

Sport 18 holes at Maleny

Maleny Golf Club has raised its game, with the public golf course now boasting 18 holes with completion of the final six holes.

Sunshine Coast Council chipped in $450,000 to drive construction of the latest stage of works.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said council’s contribution, combined with assistance provided to the Maleny Golf Club association from the federal government through a Sport Australia grant ($200,000) and the Queensland Government ($100,000) had resulted in a great outcome for the community.

“The upgrade will help ensure the facility maintains its place as one of the region’s premier golf courses,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“This project has been driven by the community from start to finish and I would like to congratulate the Maleny Golf Club committee for their tireless commitment to creating one of our coast’s best community golf courses.”

Division 5 councillor Jenny McKay also commended the club for its unwavering dedication to the project.

“The first stage of the course was completed in 2015 and I am delighted to now be celebrating the second stage, which has been constructed over the past few years,” Cr McKay said.

Maleny Golf Club president Jeff Kruse said the club had faced many challenges since plans to establish a golf club in Maleny gained traction in 1999 and owed a great debt to his long-serving

“This golf course would never have been built had it not been for the grit, determination and unwavering leadership provided by Max who only stepped down last September after 19 years as president when the finishing post finally came into sight,” Mr Kruse said.

“Our superintendent Mick McCombe has really worked miracles with volunteers and contractors to oversee the transformation of dairy pastures and some dense weedy patches into a quality course.

“In the process he won two national and one state awards for excellence.”

Mr Kruse said so much was also owed to the dedicated volunteers who had given everything to ensure the golf course was such a success and he thanked them for their commitment.

Contributed by Jodie Morgan Some of our BeeGees men and women travelled to Kingaroy on February 8 and 9 to participate in a seven aside tournament. It was a great effort by all teams with all five making the finals.

One of our men’s teams made the grand final but narrowly missing out on penalties, while one of our women’s teams won the tournament with a 1-0 victory in the grand final (pictured).

We had a great turn out for our sign on days, with many new young and excited players signing up to play for the ‘Green Machine’ in 2020.

Thank you to all who came down to support our first fundraiser car wash and sausage sizzle.

Unfortunately due to the weather we had to cancel

our second weekend car wash/sausage sizzle.

Our muster day for the U6–U11 teams is on Wednesday, February 26 at 4pm at the club house.

Training days for the following teams have already started: Senior men Tuesday and Thursday 6.30-8pm; senior women Monday and Wednesday 6.30-8pm; U16 boys Monday and Wednesday 5-6.30pm; U14 boys Monday and Wednesday 4-6pm; U14 girls Tuesday and Thursday 4.45-6pm; and U12 girls Tuesday and Thursday 4.45-6pm. Times are still to be confirmed for U13 boys and U12 boys.

Contributed by David Hayes Welcome back bowlers for 2020 in what should be another cracker year of bowls. Hope you are all refreshed and ready to get out onto the green. While you all have had a break our committee has been busy planning our next year of bowls. So far the weather has not been too kind to us but who could complain, it’s great to have some rain.

Wednesday, February 12: Ladies day jackpot, winners with the highest winning score were Brian Saunders, and Brendan and Chris Freshwater. Runners up were Vic Muscat, Jack Timm and Di Hume. Mystery prize went to Sally Squires, Dick Coppa and John Annakin. Jackpot day was well attended with 12 teams. The money did not go off so see you next month.

Thursday, February 13: Open pairs. A decision was made early to cancel play due to overnight rain. If you are a regular at Thursday bowls please consider helping out and becoming the raffle coordinator. We need someone to sell and run the raffle each week otherwise there may be no raffle. We need people to step up and help out. Maybe you could work in with somebody else and rotate the job each week.

Friday, February 14: Round one of what we hope will be an annual high school challenge.

Beerwah State High versus Glasshouse Christian College (GCC), with two games of five ends, three bowl pairs, 14 teams, seven rinks and the competition runs for seven weeks. After the first week GCC are ahead with five wins – 5 margin.

Beerwah two wins + 5 margin. The winning team on the day from Beerwah was Jack Chirgwin and Chloe Runge with two wins + 27.

The Q7s have been going for four weeks with mixed results but very close in all games.

In the Gr8s both men and ladies division five teams won their first two games.

Saturday, February 15: Gr8s men division five, round three was away Kawana. Top of the table clash with Kawana getting over the line two rinks to one, with only the pairs team of Brendan Freshwater and Simon Richter having a win.

Gr8s division five ladies, round three away to Coolum was a great win by our ladies putting them on top of the table. The fours team of Lyn Griffiths, Sue Kirk, Viv James and Chris Dougan won 29-18. Pairs team of Di Hume and Rae Farrell picked up 10 shots on the last two ends to win 29-18. Jill Kirchheiner and Chris Freshwater went down 26-16.

Q7s division four, round five, Scarborough away was not a good result with all three rinks losing.

Division five, round five, Wellers Hill was a tough away game with all three rinks going down.

Sunday, February 16: Q7s division four Scarborough at home. Although we went down again on all three rinks there was some high quality bowls played.

Q7s division five, Wellers Hill at home. With the fours getting up it came down to the pairs team of Mick Borchers and Len Skerry who came from behind to win 23-22.

Home games this Saturday from 2pm.

Our first big event for the year is the Kerry Capern Memorial Day to be held on Sunday, March 1. It will be open fours and cost $32 per person, as normal lunch and nibbles will be provided.

Contributed by Graeme Glover We all love the rain and the positive impact it has on the land, and sharing the bowling green with storms and washouts has been the norm for the past couple of weeks. Now that everything is looking green and lush bowls can be a part of one’s week again.

A team travelled to Kilcoy last Wednesday and had a good first-up win and nice lunch followed by a storm and an early trip home.

Some brave souls managed to get some bowls in last Tuesday morning at the club. Thanks to Joe Walters for organising this for our members and visitors.

The storms last Wednesday took care of the barbeque and bowls. Hopefully this week we will be successful.

Sun greeted us last Friday morning. Dave Edwards had spent a considerable amount of time getting the grounds ready for scroungers.

Miles Allen arrived and put the eager bowlers into games and, guess what? Rain. It was only a tease as it didn't stop proceedings and the afternoon was a huge success with some very close games.

Winners for the day were Dave Edwards, Don Ginns and Wendy and Mick Bulger. Well done to all who played.

A reminder to please check the board for Monday monthly pairs. Teams will travel to Woodford this week and all the best in your bowls.

Contributed by Ken Barker No play was recorded for play days last week as it was too wet. There was a training session during one of the clear patches on the Saturday morning, February 8, but a shower of rain forced early closure.

Steady rain interfered with the mowing and plans to refurbish the lawn for the tournaments to be played in March and April. We host the regional division 4 championships in March and the Queensland division 2 championships in April.

Nick Cram and Ken Barker visited the lawn on Sunday afternoon, February 9, and were treated to a water sports scenario. In the attached photo Nick is attempting to make hoop one under somewhat adverse conditions. He left the hoop unmade and no further play eventuated.

Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

Play days are Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm for 2.30pm.
