ast week our office was contacted by lots of our readers and advertisers to make sure that we were aware that the Range News had closed down.

Many, particularly the Maleny readers, were quite shocked and really disappointed. I can understand how they felt in terms of the vital role that independent local newspapers play as the voice of our communities.

For the past few years, many parts of the Maleny community who clearly liked the approach an independent publisher like us can provide, had started to send more and more contributions through.

This is why we had been integrating a stronger Maleny presence in the paper over the past 18 months and then changing the name of the paper.

However, at the end of the day, whoever is publishing the paper, needs to be continually working to be part of the community, and continue to have strong relationships with their readers and all of their advertisers to keep the paper financially viable.

So over the coming months we will be working to expand the paper and the circulation in a viable manner to reflect the needs of the whole area.

And for those of you who have suggested it - we won’t be changing the name of the paper to the Maleny News – but we will be working hard to bring an interesting mix of news from across the region to all of our readers.

Local News New life for RSL building

These days our society has a very strong focus on reusing and recycling and the old Beerwah RSL building is about to undergo a significant reuse process as it is transformed into Church on the Rise.

After the Beerwah RSL Sub-branch went into liquidation in August last year and the building was placed on the market, there has been sadness at the loss of the club, and much speculation about the venue’s future.

Pastor Aaron and Megan Jackson, who took on the leadership role at Beerwah’s Church on the Rise early last year, saw the ‘For Sale’ sign outside of the building and thought it would make a perfect place for their expanding church community. The building will be repurposed and clearly they have a very big job ahead.

All the poker machines were removed from the building when the RSL went into receivership, but eerily all the bar equipment remains intact. There will be significant renovation work needed to create the spaces / offices required by the church.

Speaking with Pastor Aaron and Megan recently, it is clear to see that they are both very excited about the new opportunities they will be able to create for their Church family and the broader community, and to bring more life and activity back to Beerwah Parade.

They anticipate that the current renovation plans will take until the end of the year to put in place,

The Church has outgrown their current building, in particular in terms of parking and meeting space.

The new venue will give them the capacity to have an auditorium to comfortably fit between 200 and 250 people along with the opportunity to grow that into a potential 500 seat venue.

Pastor Aaron is also keen to retain an item of memorabilia from the RSL to include in the new facility as a way of honouring the building’s past.

He suggested that may be the rotor blade from the Iroquois helicopter which remains attached to the wall inside the building.

At the heart of the changes, it will still be a place that brings people together to share and participate.

Say No to domestic violence! By Sonia Clark Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month is marked annually in May. Throughout this month Queensland community groups and organisations help raise awareness around the issues of domestic and family violence and collectively send a clear message that domestic and family violence will not be tolerated –‘Not Now, Not Ever’.

Domestic violence can occur in any situation, to any person regardless of their age, sex, race, education level or social situation. It can occur in numerous situations and can occur between people in intimate or family situations to those in informal care arrangements.

Unfortunately in Australia statistics show one in six women and one in 19 men has experienced physical or sexual violence at the hands of either a current or former partner.

Senior Sergeant Brad Grant from Sunshine Coast Police explains that domestic and family violence is when one person in a relationship uses violence or abuse to maintain power and control over another person.

“It causes the person being abused to live in fear. Abuse is not always physical – it can be emotional, verbal, sexual, and financial or involve threats and controlling behaviours. All forms of violence and abuse should be taken seriously,” he said.

New Art Project supports domestic peace

Artwork improves signal boxes As you have been driving around Beerwah you may have noticed that we now have two painted traffic signal boxes and they look great.

The first one is located on the intersection of Kilcoy-Beerwah Road and Peachester Road. The theme for the artwork is ‘Hands on Sunny Coast’ and it was completed by artist Kassy Abriol.

The work, described as reflecting the strong community that we are lucky to have on the Sunshine Coast, is represented by conjoining hands displaying different areas coming together in partnership, from Caloundra to Noosa.

The background is a beautiful display of the water soaked beaches we live near with blue skies and sandy shores along with the healthy amount of greenery that is still proudly spread among busy areas.

The second box, located on the corner of Roys Road and Steve Irwin Way, is titled ‘Line Work 3’ and it was completed by artist EJ Zyla who was inspired by bush fire regeneration.

The work has been co-ordinated

by Urban Smart Projects.

An exciting and colourful response to the call for more awareness and prevention of domestic violence will be launched in Maleny next week as part of DV prevention month by the newly formed ‘Say Yes to Family Peace’ initiative.

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre will host artist and men's group facilitator Rob Clark as he invites all sectors of the community to come and illustrate for domestic peace by co-creating a large mural.

“This is a creative, inspiring and joyful campaign that recognises the tragedy whilst encouraging people to rise above it to improve their lives and the lives of others,” Rob said, while busy constructing the frame for the mural. “Whilst the ‘Family Art Peace’ is in process, a fun, connected, positive environment naturally arises because we are working together in partnership.

“This is a powerful metaphor, reminding men and women of why we get together to start a family in the first place, co-creating something beautiful in the world together,” he said.

The week-long project will be unveiled at the end of the annual DV walk. It will comprise 200 canvases all joined together to form one giant canvas.

All the canvasses will be sold as a fundraiser for the 'Say Yes to Family Peace' initiative with money raised supporting this positive message to spread more widely, while also eventually being able to fund places for people in need to attend

“You can actually purchase a piece of this mural to take home as a reminder of the experience,” Rob explained. “This is the prototype that we're launching in Maleny. It's envisaged that larger murals will be rolled out in regional centres, city squares and parks across the country, so it's really exciting that it starts in Maleny and the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

When Belinda Murray of Glenview State School approached the Men's Shed at Beerwah to assist with materials to assist the school’s Academy Program the men of the shed were only too happy to help.

Belinda explained that the kids of Years 3 and 4 were tasked with the project of locating and identifying endangered fauna.

They then would create artificial habitat by way of nesting boxes and hollow log havens to protect and encourage the different species to breed safely.

Andy Henry of the Glasshouse Country Men's Shed suggested that he would make up nesting box kits from his treasured red cedar.

The kits will be assembled by the kids themselves and they will decide the size of entry holes for the different birds.

Then they will work out a plan to position the boxes in the best locations. Being made of red cedar, the boxes can be expected to last for many years.

To compliment this project, Years 5 and 6 conducted an important flora project, aimed at planting the trees and shrubs that will supply the food for the birds and animals.

New role for Powell The Liberal-National Party recently voted to change their Queensland state parliamentary leadership team, bringing in Tim McNicholls and Deb Frecklington to replace Laurence Springborg and JohnPaul Langbroek.

Consequently, a reshuffle of the shadow front bench took place, with local Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP being given more responsibility in the shadow Ministries of Transport, Main Roads and Local Government.

Andrew said that it was honour to be appointed as the LNP Shadow Minister for the three important areas.

“All three aspects of the portfolio have a huge impact on the electorate of Glass House and I've been a strong advocate on each over the years of my service,” he explained.

“I thank Leader of the Opposition Tim Nicholls MP and Deputy Leader Deb Frecklington MP for the opportunity to apply that advocacy across the state of Queensland.”

With many main road issues bubbling away across the region – Steve Irwin Way, Bruce Highway, Landsborough-Maleny Road, MalenyKenilworth Road … just to name a few – Andrew has the weight of local expectation now squarely on his shoulders.

New Glass House parklands plan The future look and function of the new Glass House District Park will be decided at Sunshine Coast Council’s general meeting this Thursday.

A comprehensive landscape plan is being presented at the May 19 general meeting, setting out how the park will be developed over the next 10 years.

The park, located between Coonowrin Road and Sahara Road, is approximately 38 hectares of parklands which will become a central focus for the future outdoor leisure activities in Glass House.

Currently the park is only partially developed with minimal and disjointed facilities.

The landscape plan will rationalise, improve and renew the current functions and infrastructure.

The total design and construction estimate to develop the park as per the landscape plan is $2,500,000 over a 10 year capital works timeframe, with funding drawn from council and other sources such as State or Federal grants.

Some of the proposed developments over the coming years include: pathway and trail network (including boardwalk and bridges); picnic shelters, barbecues, tables and seats; a playground; dog off leash area; toilets; possible skate park; and garden and landscaping.

Business owners embrace Maleny Show goes digital year Maleny Showgoers will be able to use show fever Contributed by Lea Parkes This digital technologies through the use of apps and With the countdown to the Maleny Show well and truly on, you might have noticed this week the number of businesses in Maleny who are getting into the spirit, by participating in this year’s Window Dressing Competition.

The competition was open to any Maleny business and the display must reflect the theme to this year’s Maleny Show – ‘Renew, recycle, re-use’.

The competition has two categories; shop window and inside shop / office, and the winners will receive a cash prize and a trophy.

The community will be asked to vote for their favourite entry by filling in a voting form in the business.

Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies Inc. (QCAS), has partnered with Sunshine Coastbased tech to provide a digital marketing and communication software platform to its members across Queensland and Northern New South Wales.

QCAS will trial the new technologies at the 2016 Maleny and Emerald Agricultural Shows, before rolling the partnership out to all interested show societies across the remainder of the 2016 season.

The project will allow show societies to modernise their patrons’ show experiences through the Beacons that are small, wireless devices that can transmit messages and offers directly to an enabled smartphone.

Using the show’s app, attendees can use the beacons to easily navigate the showgrounds, access special content and offers, and receive reminders about the events and programs they want to see.

Graduate gains great job

A University of the Sunshine Coast graduate Hannah Williams (23) of Maleny has landed a position with one of Australia’s largest developers and is thriving in her role as a development professional for Stockland Development, which has seen her organising key components of a major Caloundra residential community. With a Bachelor of Property Economics and Development, Hannah has already been involved in tasks like designing parks and streetscapes, bridge construction and coordinating environmental rehabilitation for Stockland’s Bells Reach project.

“One of the reasons I enjoy my role so much is that no day is ever the same.

One day I might be in high-visibility clothing and steel-capped boots trekking through bushland and the next I might be travelling interstate to attend national conferences,” she said.

Sorry Day story telling An indigenous story-telling afternoon with Aunty Val is being planned for Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre at 12.30pm on Wednesday, May 25, in honour of National Sorry Day. Aunty Val, respected Indigenous community member and elder from Nungeena, will share stories from her life growing up as an Aboriginal woman in Queensland. Aunty Val’s early years were spent at Cherbourg west of Gympie. There will be a presentation, storytelling, question time and light refreshments will be served in exchange for a gold coin donation. “We are honoured to have Aunty Val, who has so much to offer, come and share her stories with us at the Neighbourhood Centre. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to come and listen and ask questions about Aboriginal history in Queensland and to deepen our shared understanding of indigenous culture,” said Helen Wilkinson, Neighbourhood Centre president. Modelling Expo to raise funds for Charity

By Sonia Clark On Saturday, July 16, members from ‘Need a Feed’ Beerwah are hosting a ‘modelling expo’ at the Beerwah Community Hall to raise funds for local, national and international charities. The afternoon event will support ‘Need a Feed’, The Cancer Council of Australia and The Rainbow Child Foundation.

Jennifer Williamson is the Workers Committee President of Need a Feed Beerwah, which is auspiced by the Hinterland based not-for-profit organisation ‘Need a Feed’ based at Marae Gardens, Beerburrum. ‘Need a Feed’ work closely with local neighbourhood centres to assist those that are disadvantaged or homeless with accessing non-perishable food donations and community based help.

Jennifer’s daughter Anastasia recently made it to the nationals for ‘Face Of The Globe Australia’ modelling contest and wanted to raise money for charity - so the idea behind the expo was launched.

With a gold coin donation entry, the event promises to have an afternoon of glamour, style and fashion suitable for the whole family. There will be dancing, models on the catwalk, workshops, food and raffles, and stall holders selling new clothing or beauty products. Workshops will include hairdressing and makeup techniques, photography and yoga. There are a number of local businesses involved including local boutiques whose clothing will be modelled on the catwalk - including Icon Boutique and Gracie Mayne Boutique.

The performance teams from Landsborough’s Black Swan School of Dance wowed the audience and the judges at the recent Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod. Competing Marlee Radenovic and against dozens of dancers from across Rebekah Woodhead Queensland, the Black Swan senior duo team placed third while the U8 and U12 teams received a grade of Highly Commended. Mrs Rebecca from Black Swan said the results were a wonderful outcome. “They are a true reflection of the girls’ hard work. Importantly, the girls also had a great time performing for their friends and family and gained invaluable stage experience in the process,” she said. Not so trivial success

Contributed by Jessica Raintree Thank you to all the people who made the Mooloolah Lions Trivia Night such a success! On Saturday, May 7, the Mooloolah Primary State School was filled with tables of people determined to win the coveted Trivia Night trophy. Competition was fierce with the Community Centre team winning the evening. The night raised $1,200.00 of much-needed funds for the Lions In Place Emergency Accommodation Centre and also a contribution to the Mooloolah School. We couldn't have asked for a better venue than the Mooloolah Primary School Hall. There was ample room for many tables and everything we needed for a great night!

Many people have been asking for another Trivia Night so stay tuned for more brainy fun in the near future. This is another example of our community enjoying a fun night together and supporting a great cause.

Mooloolah Clean Up Australia Day

By Jan Kesby, clean up event organiser Tree Frog Enterprises This is a bit late, but I want to thank some people who helped to make this important Clean Up event happen in March.

We had 19 people turned up to pick up rubbish around the Mooloolah township. The worst areas are always the railway and Neill Road from town to Neill Road bridge in both gutters. We collected eight bags of recycle items and 10 bags of rubbish. Mooloolah is definitely cleaner than past years so congrats to Mooloolah people for not trashing.

Plastic and drink cans are always the most common items, then cigarette packets and butts. All of this washes down the drains into the river system which affects our native fauna and amphibians all the way to the ocean.

Please consider our waterways and fauna when you think of throwing rubbish out into the environment.

Thank you to all those Mooloolah people who continually pick up rubbish all through the year – and there are many of them. Thank you so much to Ken from Whites IGA Mooloolah for his kind donation of sausages and bread for the barbecue after the clean-up. Many thanks to Sunshine Coast Council and Ramados for the rubbish bags, gloves, skip bin and recycle bins. Until next year, the first Sunday of March when we will do it all again.

Battery storage…

by Ian Hall, from All Energy HQ From what I have learned over 27 years of selling solar and batteries is that one size does not fit all.

The new lithium technology of battery storage has varying degrees of performance over the range of chemical elements included in the manufacturing process.

With some brands of battery, when you switch your appliances on that battery can only deliver one third of the amount of energy that you need at any one time, so the balance of what you need automatically comes from the grid. This means you are still buying electricity instead of using all your own energy from your battery.

Other batteries may deliver 50%, or they may deliver 100% … so it is important when you buy your batteries to get the brand that meets your requirements.

Then there is the weight. It is surprising that some manufacturers believe the wall of your house can support this. Other options are ground mounted batteries.

Also the number of cycles – the number of times you can take the energy from the battery – is important. The better ones last for 10 to 20 years; the others may last half of that.

The amount of energy that you can draw or extract from the battery each use varies from 70-100%. It is important to know how much of the contents you can use.

Think of the battery like a rainwater tank. The tank may hold 10 litres of water, but if the outlet pipe is located say six inches up from the bottom, then only the water above the pipe can be used, so there may always be 3 litres of water sitting in the tank that you cannot get to use.

Some brands of batteries are currently only compatible with specific inverters, but there is a brand of battery that will suit all existing inverters of any brand.

So don’t rush in and order a hybrid inverter without full investigation of the capabilities of each model.

Maleny-Kenilworth Road fight It is approaching that time of year again where Andrew Powell, Member for Glass House, will strap on his walking shoes and make the 35 kilometre journey from Little Yabba Creek to Maleny to reaffirm his ongoing fight for funds to upgrade the road.

“After having to call on the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to immediately fix large hazardous pot holes ahead of Easter, I’m particularly fired up about this year’s walk on Friday, May 20, and our need to send a very strong and clear message to the Minister.

“I’m calling on locals from all over the Hinterland to join me this year so we can show our united focus to improve safety on the road. You can walk the whole journey or even just a kilometre, every little bit will help.”

Mr Powell recently asked the Minister for Main Roads a question in Parliament regarding the completion of a planning project into the cost of widening and re-surfacing a 2.9km section of the road, south of the Cambroon Bridge.

The Minister confirmed the full upgrade of this section would cost $5.5 million – funding that currently doesn’t exist.

“I know my job as the local Member is to continue to demonstrate to the Minister how desperately we need this road upgraded and why our safety is at risk every time we use the road,” Mr Powell said..

“This annual walk may be seen as a political stunt by some, but if that’s the only way we can show the Government how serious we are, then I make no apologies for this.”

Mr Powell also uses this annual walk to raise funds for Chappy Tressa from Conondale State School and Chappy Becky from Maleny State School.

“Our Chappys are a vital part of our school community and deserve every bit of our support. Please consider making a donation to Scripture Union and nominate either of these Chappys in your donation so they can continue to help our kids.

Let’s go on a catchment crawl!

By Ann McGrath, Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare We are well on the way to completing the actions listed in the interim MRWL Strategic Plan as endorsed at the General Meeting in March.

The next step is to work with our members and key stakeholders for the development of a new three-year MRWL Strategic Plan to provide organisational direction for the coming financial years. This plan will document our members shared vision for MRWL and enable the tracking of our progress.

This planning process is to occur over two weekends and is proudly supported by the Sunshine Coast Council’s grants program.

Day 1. Catchment Crawl – Saturday, May 28.

We have hired a 4x4 bus for the day and will spend the day exploring the Mooloolah River, starting at its headwaters. The time table for the day is currently being developed.

Along the way, we will view and discuss issues which are impacting the health of the river and its environs and the possible actions MRWL can undertake over the next couple of years, to make a difference.

Our contribution to Clean up Australia Day will be to collect any rubbish we may find along the way.

Food and refreshment will be provided.

As bus numbers for this event are limited, we are calling for expressions of interest from members and stakeholders.

Preference will be given to those who will also be attending the general meeting on Saturday, June 11 and who are able to provide MRWL with support in some way during the next couple of years.

At the recent dinner meeting at the Beerwah Lions Club, Lion Max Pinwill, announced that local motorists will have another opportunity to have their number plate screws changed to tamper proof ones.

Neighborhood watch, Beerwah Lions and the local police will conduct this project at the Glass House Mountains School on the morning of Saturday, June 18.

The guest speaker on the night was Greg Beard from the Mater Foundation who gave a history of the Mater, describing how a group of Sisters of Mercy had founded the original Mater Hospital, with Cardinal Moran laying the foundation stone during 1908.

He told of the introduction of the Mater Art Unions and how they had helped the hospital grow over the years.

He then went on to describe the modern day Mater catering for the present challenges and needs of illnesses affecting Australians including the Mater’s world-class research institute, where a dedicated team are working toward greatly improved treatments for cancer.

A gastronomic feast

Contributed by Pauline Clarke On Thursday, May 5 Glass House Country View Club joined with Caloundra View Club for lunch at Cartwright’s Restaurant at the Mountain Creek TAFE. With nearly 25 ladies from each club, we sat down to a stunning array of food. Following a walnut bread entree there were five main dishes to choose from including balmain bugs, barramundi, veal, chicken and lamb, each served with accompanying vegies, etc. All of this was followed by a selection of sumptuous desserts, all to die for.

Cartwright’s restaurant is a very worthwhile experience particularly as you are supporting the training of kitchen and waiting staff. The standard of food from the kitchen and the serving skill of the waiters was excellent and a credit to the college.

Our next lunch meeting will be on Wednesday, May 18 at Glass House Sports Club, 11.00am for 11.30am, where we will be entertained by Constable Susan Lowndes from Beerwah police station. If you would like to help disadvantaged Australian children please come and join us.

Skate Park or dump?

Over recent months when going to the pool around 7.00am I have been observing how the rubbish that accumulates around the Beerwah Skate Park is increasing. The last two long weekends have been over the top. Both Tuesdays the number of large soft drink bottles (or bongs?) and empty food packaging all over the place, is a disgrace and a demonstration of a complete lack of community pride.

This, after all the good work and investment by Sunshine Coast Council in beautifying Beerwah, and the volunteer work done by the Beerwah Sportsground management team, to present Beerwah as a place you would like to visit and stay for a couple of days. It makes me sad to see the laziness of the abusers of this facility that has been provided by the community for the entertainment and recreation of the young users.

The lids have been ripping off the rubbish bins and they still can't put their rubbish in a bin.

I would like to implore the young leaders in the community to take up the challenge to encourage the abusers of your fantastic space to become responsible users. Glasshouse Country may need to have a ‘Clean up the Community Day’.

Costly garden waste

My husband was taking a load of garden waste to the recycle centre for the first time as we finally had a vehicle to transport it. When he asked how much, he was told $8.00, when my husband queried this price as it was only green waste, the fellow then decided it was going to cost $16.00!

Really, is that how you treat residents doing the right thing? I am very disappointed in the attitude of some staff. I would also like to know why is it that Caboolture Recycle Centre doesn’t charge and ours do?

What a shemozzle

Oh my God, our state member Andrew Powell MP apparently thinks we are a bunch of bloody dropkicks here in his electorate in the Glass House Mountains.

I cannot get over his comment in the last edition in respect of the absolute shemozzle the professionals are making of our intersection.

It would seem that we will have traffic lights by 2020 with a little luck.

To admit or make such a statement that heavy vehicles would not be able to use the intersection that was being built.

When did they realise that heavy vehicles use this intersection? Who had to tell them that?

This project has become incompetence personified and I will not even mention the work that has been done and ripped up. I'll bet anyone interested that within four months on completion, if ever it is completed, that somebody will dig up the brand new surface and put a water pipe, gas or electricity cable in.

It is great news to see that the Bowen Road intersection is going to receive the long awaited traffic lights. But hey, how about they finish the Reed Street intersection first. It is obvious that Main Roads is doing the work, if it was a private contractor it would be completed by now.

Planning incompetence

In response to Mr Powell’s feeble attempt to cover up the incompetent workings of the Main Roads Departments moving of the curbing three times. If any of the hierarchy of the Main Roads Department had even visited this town in the last 20 years or so, they would have realised how many trucks actually use this intersection.

In turn, doing away the actual need of a traffic census. Surely this simple practice should have been done long before and not during the construction phase of the job at hand?

Disaster in the Making

After reading our member for Glass House Andrew Powell’s response in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News on May 11 - you must think the residents of Glass House Mountains are stupid or blind.

When the design and layout was drawn by the so called engineers, working for Department of Main Roads, they would have known that this was indeed a designated route for heavy vehicles as it has been for quite a few years.

So let’s be honest to the taxpayers of Glass House Mr Powell, and simply say that they made a big stuff up constructing the curb and channel at this intersection. I quote your words ‘it was identified that heavy vehicles were not going to be able to use the intersection safely’. Come on Mr Powell don’t beat around the bush, tell it like it is.

Let’s hope twice is enough and not pull the Trifecta.

Take an interest

Now that the Federal election has been called, you can expect campaigning to shift up a gear.

Whilst you may not have much interest in politics, you do have a civic duty to cast your vote. Believe it or not, Australia has one of the best democracies and election processes in the world … internationally envied.

I urge you to find out about each of the candidates in our electorate and make an informed choice. Don't waste your time and effort making an informal vote or simply numbering the boxes down the list with no regard for the candidates. Or doing anything other than as instructed which usually makes your vote invalid and wasted. It's disrespectful to the whole democratic process.

For a candidate, it is a really big effort getting out and about trying to attract your vote. An effort that consumes their life entirely. It's very public, with little privacy, and subject to scrutiny and criticism.

But they're there, because they believe they will be able to best represent you and the electorate in parliament. It's a demanding job and deserves our respect. There is also only one winner. For the rest it is all for nought.

So please, take a few moments to check out the candidates, look up their Facebook page or website, give them a call, have a chat, and meet them at local events. They should all gladly engage with you.

Who knows, you might enjoy it. It might even spur you into being more involved in the political process. And that could lead you to contacting a political party and becoming a member. Then you can start having an influence in various policies.

Any party will gladly take you into their fold.

School News Special Mothers’ Service at GCC

The chapel was bursting at the seams as some very special mums were treated to their very own service at Glasshouse Christian College on Wednesday, May 4.

Mums were greeted at the door by student leaders who pinned a beautiful chrysanthemum corsage on their lapel and gave them a handmade card.

After the school pledge and Lord’s Prayer the mums were treated to a wonderful concert. ‘Little Voices’ sang ‘Thank you for the World’ with some great actions. They were led by Ryder Rees, a little Prep boy with a beautiful confident voice.

Head of Primary Mrs Cheryl Bryers spoke to the assembly about the importance of a firm foundation in the early years by comparing childhood to bamboo. It does all its growing underground for the first few years and then sprouts up and thrives because of its strong roots. Mrs Bryers reminded the mums how important it is to spend time with children to build this firm foundation.

The Year 2 children sang a funny song called ‘The Mother’s Day Song’ by Bryant Oden which retold some of the well-meaning disasters that can happen on Mum’s Day when children try to please.

Phrases like, ‘just for you I did my best to cut my own hair; some places came out pretty good and some are kind of bare’.

Similar scenarios were followed by the verse which says, ‘Remember it’s the thought that counts more than the results.’

After laughing it was time to ‘awwww’ as the little Preppies moved some mums to tears by singing why they need ‘10 Hugs a Day’.

Chappy arrives with a splash!

Contributed by Alison Edwards Glass House Mountains State School is very pleased to introduce our new Chaplain – Chappy Nikki who lives in Caloundra with her husband Scott and their two dogs Coco and Leroy. Chappy Nikki has been working as a Chaplain for four years and currently spreads her time between Everton Park, Woodford and Glass House Mountains State Schools. Chappy Nikki has fitted in to the Glass House Mountains State School community extremely well and had a ball participating in the recent Run4Fun. While her main role is one of support of students, staff and parents, she is also actively involved in the Chaplaincy Committee and the P&C Association.

Parent workshop at Mooloolah State School

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Parents of Mooloolah State School recently returned to class for the morning to participate in a Maths Workshop conducted by Peter Carmichael.

Peter is a Principal education advisor: Australian Curriculum - Mathematics, and is an experienced maths teacher and a representative of the Queensland Education Department. The workshop focused on mathematical skills and strategies that all parents could utilise to enhance their child’s learning at home for primary students. It was valuable in helping parents understand the way students are learning maths in classrooms. Peter enforced to parents that our way of learning when we went to school has changed dramatically from practise and recall, to students having a connected understanding of maths and being able to explain, reason and justify their answer. That is why there are many different learning styles, to allow students to discover and understand maths concepts. The workshop was informative and interactive for all the participants. We played maths games and talked about strategies.

It was fun, factual and as the workshop was drawing to a close, parents were keen to keep going. The workshop was such a success that Peter has promised to return with part two. Everyone took home resources including counters, game boards, dice, booklets and white boards.

Prep Transition at Beerwah State School is a play group for children in the year before school. This free program will assist children in making friends, instil a love of learning, and help them be better prepared to commence school. The program is designed to provide the building blocks that children and families need for a successful beginning to school life. New parents of teenagers group Having teenagers can be challenging. As our children become young adults with different views on life to ours, they want to explore the world their way, and are not always able to communicate with us. It can be tough, but you are not alone.

If you want to share, ask questions or just connect, come and find support with other parents in a facilitated small group.

One of the parents involved in the group commented that “this facilitated group has been amazing for me already. Not just another support group, the facilitation in this group supports new and shared knowledge and some great take away ideas, as well as allowing me to express my hurts and concerns, and have them listened to.”

The group of parents of teenagers meeting on Tuesday mornings has reached its capacity. A new group is starting on Thursday evenings 5.00pm to 7.30pm at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

Living Visitor Information Centre Update

By Bev Dooley Welcome to autumn and the busy season at the Glass House Visitor Centre.

This gorgeous weather has seen an increase in our visitor numbers, particularly from overseas, and of course they wish to walk and climb.

Our Ambassadors are a wealth of information on the local area, not just for the obvious attractions but for all the events and things to do on the Sunshine Coast. Our visitors are looking for an experience, one that lasts a life time and we can help them achieve that.

As a group we often walk in the Sunshine Coast and last weekend we were lucky enough to walk the Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway.

This amazing project was undertaken because a retired gentleman was bored. It has now reached a 3 kilometre length, it has funding and it has advertising.

The walk is suitable for almost anyone to do, it has wheelchair access and it is dog friendly if your friend is on a leash, something that most heritage listed walks do not allow. So if you are looking for something to do and wish to have a look, call in and collect a brochure.

Just a reminder that on May 25 at 10.00am we are having our Bee month presentation, this is open to anyone that wishes to come along. We will also have a light morning tea, but please let us know if you would like to attend.

Small sustainable farming

By Sonia Clark Looking for a ‘tree change’ and keen to embrace the spirit of a new adventure; Emma Carlos and partner Mark Simm purchased the 18.5 acre ‘Blackwattle Farm’ in May of last year.

While the property had previously been run as a Bed and Breakfast, Emma and Mark have worked hard to transform it into a small sustainable farm that offers an authentic experience of a back to basics lifestyle that they are excited to share with others.

Emma was originally working in Western Australia as a seafarer and Mark in the Coal Mines when the couple decided in was time for a lifestyle change.

Not wanting to work away at sea anymore and with the potential of being able to run a business from home, the decision was made to buy the farm with a vision to be as self-sufficient as possible.

It is evident how much Emma and Mark love living on the farm; and they are keen to share the lifestyle, produce and the beauty of the region as a whole with others.

Since buying the property, the couple have built an additional cabin, created a 30 x 30 metre organic vegetable patch that gets picked daily, and have expanded into hosting sustainability workshops.

Recently they have collaborated with a local business ‘Just Elopements’, and also offer the property as an exclusive venue for small weddings and elopements.

Emma and Mark also share their home with a herd of Dexter cows who provide them with both

Emma and Mark with Rocket milk and beef, pigs - including the super cute miniature pig ‘Willow’, chickens for fresh eggs, alpacas and soon some goats.

They actively support other local farms and choose to eat seasonally with produce as fresh as possible. Nothing goes to waste and wherever possible they use local homemade products.

Wanting to also inspire others to have their own sustainable blocks, workshops include organic farming, preserving, bread and cheesemaking.

Visitors have the choice of either a ‘Mountain View’ suite which overlooks Beerwah and Coonowrin Mountains or a self contained ‘Rain Forest’ cabin that sleeps four. Out & About Celebrating our mums Mums contribute so much to the school community and last week was our chance to say thanks and treat our mum’s and grandmothers.

The Peachester State School Mother’s Day High Tea was enjoyed by all who came and those who collected take-home treats.

It was a beautiful afternoon in the school garden with a sensational array of beautiful sweets provided by some talented cooks in the community.

“Now this is a High Tea,” commented one Grandmother noting that she had not seen better at a high-priced city High Tea. Raffle Ticket winners were Amanda Potter (twice), Michelle Nolte, Jessica Brauns, Ebony Bell, Coral Beutal, Christine Moyse, Adrian Pisano, Carol Kazimir, Katrina Odgers and Ken. This UK biopic stars Maggie Smith as a crusty impolite invader ensconced in writer Alan Bennett’s driveway. It will be screened by the Maleny Film Society in the Maleny Community Centre on Saturday, May 21 (doors open at 6.00pm for dinner, movie screens at 7.15pm).

She became the subject of a 1989 book by the TV writer ‘Talking Heads and Beyond the Fringe’ novelist/playwright, now adapted into a straight-speaking movie. Alex Jennings plays Bennett and Jim Broadbent appears in the surprising role of Underwood, blackmailer to the feisty outcast. The BBC Symphony Orchestra features in the production, which won a Golden Globe nomination for Maggie Smith. Direction is by Nicholas Hytner, with the film script by Bennett. The program will include a short film from the Gympie Heart of Gold festival.

Work on a feasibility study to explore opportunities to extend the much-loved Maleny Library is set to start this week and Sunshine Coast Council wants to hear from you.

Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the Sunshine Coast Library Plan 2014-2024 identified a need to investigate opportunities to redesign the Maleny Library, which is the second smallest in council’s library network but one of the busiest.

“It is important that the community takes this opportunity to provide its input for the Maleny Library Facility Development Plan which will provide recommendations to council on the expansion of the library,” Cr McKay said.

Deakin University scientists may have found a way to stop the cancer that has been killing Tasmanian devils for the past 20 years.

And the devils (Sarcophilus harrisii) could actually already hold the solution – natural antibodies found in the marsupial’s immune system.

Dr Beata Ujvari, from Deakin’s Centre for Integrative Ecology within the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, investigated differences in molecules found in the devils’ immune systems, comparing those that had the cancer, known as the Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumour Disease, and those that didn’t.

“We know from human and animal studies that certain natural antibodies are able to recognise and kill cancerous cells, so we wanted to see whether the presence of these molecules would also determine tumour development in Tasmanian devils,” Dr Ujvari said.

“We found that devils that have a higher ratio of these natural antibodies were less likely to have cancer.

“We can deduce then that devils with higher natural antibody ratio are therefore less susceptible to the contagious cancer,” Dr Ujvari said.

Dr Ujvari added that the results could potentially halt the spread of disease that has devastated the Tasmanian Devil population since its first sighting in 1996, hopefully enabling new vaccine and treatment options.

The research, ‘Immunoglubolin dynamics and cancer prevalence in Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii)’ is published in the latest edition of ‘Nature Scientific Reports’.

“Anti-tumour vaccines that enhance the production of these natural antibodies, or direct treatment of the cancer with natural antibodies, could become a solution to help halt this disease,” Dr Ujvari said.

“This process known as ‘active immunotherapy’, is becoming more and more accepted in treating human cancers, and we think it could be the magic bullet in saving the Tasmanian devil from extinction.”

The facial cancer is spread from devil to devil via biting during social interactions, and has caused massive population declines of Tasmanian devils since its first sighting in 1996, in Tasmania.

Dr Ujvari said that because the cancer was transmitted from devil to devil, their immune system should recognise the cells as foreign objects, like a pathogen, and work to eliminate them from the victim’s system.

Let the grass grow

with Ann McGrath I’m not sure how my love affair with native grasses began but I think it was when I was introduced to the satisfaction of hand weeding Carpet Grass. I didn’t even know what Carpet Grass was but there was an area of about 100 m2 of it on our block. It was just a thick boring mass – great as mowed lawn but not so great left to grow wild. Our visiting Land for Wildlife officer showed me how easy it was to pull up, so over the next 12 months, I removed it all. It was so easy, almost therapeutic, and I was able to just leave it in piles and it didn’t regrow. The biggest surprise was how the native grasses just reclaimed the ground. Now, the Carpet Grass doesn’t stand a chance! The native grasses continue to choke it out and intermittently, I remove bits of the offending grass that has managed to grow. The natives in this particular area are a mix of the smaller natives, although elsewhere the larger, Barbed Wire, Blady, Scented-top and Kangaroo Grass grow rampant.

I must admit, uncontrolled, the larger grasses can look very messy but single tufts of our native grasses are as attractive as any of the exotic grasses found in nurseries.

There are a couple of obvious rewards for having native grasses around.

Firstly, it doesn’t need mowing which then gives you time for the second, which to sit back and enjoy the small birds, butterflies and small animals that now thrive in their native habitat.

It has been my experience that if we can get rid of the weeds, in the majority of cases the natives just say thank you and do their thing.

Just gotta love the bush.

It was a treat to hear their main guest speaker, Jerry ColbyWilliams, of ABC’s Gardening Australia fame, talk. Also, any current or former members who can supply articles or photos for the 50th anniversary of the Queensland Council of Garden Clubs would be very welcome.

Gordon and Cath Howitt have a problem with a few Currawongs damaging their vehicles. They wanted suggestions on how to scare them away and rubber snakes didn’t work. Nessie Pratten told us the story behind the Valentine rose which she has kindly donated to the Peachester State School to plant in their Memorial Garden. Sally Joyce thanked Nessie for her kind gift and after the meeting, accompanied Nessie and a couple of members to admire the rose in its new home. Results of the competition bench for March - Tie 1st Coral Beutel and Gordon Howitt on 15 points, 2nd went to Cath Howitt on 14 points. Prickly Leaved Paperbark

Melaleuca nodosa On first glance at this lovely shrub in flower, you could be forgiven for thinking it is a wattle or Acacia.

Unlike most Melaleucas which have ‘brush like’ flowers, this Melaleuca has golden globular flowers.

A plant of wet or dry heath, it grows in coastal sandy soils from New South Wales to North Queensland.

Most references indicate that M.nodosa grows to 7 metres but many specimens tend to be much less in the wild.

The bark of this shrub is papery and the needle like leaves are quite prickly hence the name.

Following flowering, the woody clusters of fruit persist on the plant for some time, ensuring that seed is viable for months to come.

Prickly leaved paperbark is a good source of pollen and nectar, making it an important plant for birds, bees and butterflies.

If most of us were honest there are so many things about ourselves we don’t like, externally and internally. As a result we don’t usually feel too good about ourselves. Because none of us really feel that great about ourselves we look for love and acceptance and significance in whatever we can find.

The trouble is, many times the things we look at eventually disappoint. Our family, our kids get older, and no longer need us, our spouse becomes boring, our work becomes routine. How do we feel good about ourselves and about our lives?

There have been a number of times in my own life where quite frankly nothing made me feel good about myself because my life was such a mess.

This is where the Christian faith shines into our darkness.

The bible tells me two things.

It tells me that I am God's enemy.

I don’t expect that sort of thing from a religious book - I expect to hear it tell me that if I try harder then I can earn God’s love.

But the bible says I can’t earn God’s love - there are things about me that I don’t like and there are things about me God doesn’t like.

Secondly it tells me that despite myself, Jesus loves me very much. As a matter of fact Jesus loved me enough to allow himself to be crucified on my behalf.

So for me the greatest person in the universe tells me that he loves me and thinks I am worthwhile enough for him to sacrifice his life for me.

If the greatest person in the universe tells me he loves me and he thinks I have value and worth then surely I must be loved and have value.

Even though I might be this strange mess the king of the universe loves me.

Contributed by Sue Williamson A perfect autumn day was enjoyed by all who competed in last Thursday's Single Stableford ladies golf competition at the beautiful Beerwah Golf Course.

Numbers have been decreasing for our Thursday competitions recently, with only 52 players last week. Hopefully with the cooler weather finally here, we will see more girls back on the course.

Last week's Division one winner was Cecilia Proud, with a score of 37 points. She was closely followed by Gail Gundry, with 36 points, on a countback. Division two was won by Beth Butler with 36 points and runner up was Lyn Steele with 34 points.

Nearest to the pin shots were won by Monica Dangerfield on the 2nd hole, Sonia Kenway on the 5th, Cecilia Proud on the 16th and Sharon Phillips, with her close 2nd shot, on the 18th hole.

Contributed by Pauline Fraley In spite of Witta Wagtail's loss to Maleny Racqueteers, the competition and tennis between the two teams was very enjoyable. Thank you to Pauline, Christine, Gerry and Sonia. The Wallabies, Paula and Liz, had a win against the Bangles 6-1, 6-1.

Whistlers had a win on Friday playing Yandina Allsorts, 6-2 sets, 45-30 games. Well played Donna, Brenda, Maree and Michelle from Mooloolaba, who filled in for the team.

The Wildcats had a great match against Peregian Parakeets. It was very close all day but Pauline, Annie, Libby and Jenie were pipped at the post going down 40-32.

The Witta Wikings hosted Tewantin at home.

A very competitive and enjoyable afternoon, however, there had to be a winning team and that was The Terrific Tewantin team, a few more sets and games here and there. Thanks to all players on both teams and Kev for finally showing up.

Witta Wompoos played at Gympie against Gympie Silver. A cliff-hanger of a match going right down to the last set, darkness closing in and Witta chasing a draw. It just wasn't to be.

Despite wonderful efforts by the team, in general Gympie were the better team, and ran out winners 7 sets to 5. Maybe next time.

Cross Country Challenge on the Maleny Precinct

On Sunday, May 22, don't forget it's the fourth race in the Allez Sport Mooloolaba Sunshine Coast Cross Country 2016 series.

The Maleny Community Precinct course is considered to be the best on the Sunshine Coast – and all events are open to families, runners, joggers, and walkers of all ages, from under eights upwards. Taking place on the Maleny Community Precinct, starting at the Maleny Golf Club, 15 Porter's Lane, senior runners will compete in the open 10K, 6K, 4K and 3K, then there are also age related 4K, 3K, 2K and 1K races.

Races start at 8.00am. But be there 30 minutes earlier to register if you want to compete.

Cross Country at Mooloolah

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Last week Mooloolah State School held its annual cross country. The students were ready to go after second break to run the 3km course. The students that did not run the course were invited to do the fun run; this included our Prep and Year 1 students.

We had some great long distant runners among the students and if their times were good, they will be off to districts. The winning house for the day was Westaway, followed by Rungert and then Maddock. Parents and staff were exceptionally proud of the efforts and team spirit of all the students.

The events started with the eight year olds, and went on through to the 12 year olds. The students were in their sports houses and cheered and clapped for their house mates. “I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad news,” he said as he surveyed the worried faces. “The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant.

“It's an experimental procedure, very risky, but it is the only hope. Insurance will cover the procedure, but you will have to pay for the brain,” he said.

The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news. After a time, someone asked, “how much will a brain cost?”

The moment turned awkward. Some of the men actually had to 'try' to not smile, avoiding eye contact with the women.

A man, unable to control his curiosity, finally blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, “Why is the male brain so much more than a female brain?”

The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and explained to the entire group, “It’s just standard pricing procedure. We have to price the female brains a lot lower because they've been used.”
