Hi Everyone...

Most of us are very aware that the weekend before last saw bushfires across our area, with a number of locals evacuated and sadly for one local family they have lost their home.

When events such as these recent fires on the Sunshine Coast and across Queensland happen, it makes you think how you and your family would react/cope in this situation.

Each time I read a media report or listen to them being read on the radio and I hear the words “You need to be ready to follow your bushfire survival plan” I really wonder just how many of those affected had a bushfire survival plan.

Do you? Do you know what needs to be in one? Has your family even talked about it?

Clearly with such an early start to the bushfire season it reminds us how important it is for us all to be prepared for the long season ahead.

On page 5 this week we have included a story that highlights some of the details you need to consider when putting your own plans together. Hopefully this might be a starting point for further discussion!

Local News Bushfires take their toll

By Greg Brown Although the bushfire conditions last week were extreme and fires raged through the Peregian area, thankfully our local region escaped similar devastating impacts.

A serious fire at Tunnel Ridge Road sadly resulted in the loss of two sheds and a storage container where Brendan Donahoo, Sarah Foreman and their three children had everything in storage while house renovations were being undertaken.

As a consequence, the local family lost all their possessions – furniture, kids clothing and sentimental keepsakes … everything.

Elsewhere, fires at Mt Mellum, Peachester and Beerburrum resulted in no property damage.

The Maleny, Glass House, Beerwah and Peachester Rural Fire Brigades were an integral part of the fire fighting efforts locally as well as supporting other crews at Peregian and other locations around South East Queensland.

Meanwhile, Queensland Police have charged a 14-year-old Peregian Springs boy and a 15-yearold Coolum Beach girl with deliberately lighting the fire that destroyed bushland and forced a large number of residents to evacuate their homes in the Peregian area.

With Queensland continuing to experience extreme

and dangerous fire conditions throughout the state, police are reminding the public of the dangers of lighting fires or committing acts of arson.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has encouraged Queenslanders to donate to help people affected by the Queensland bushfires.

The Queensland Government has kick-started the fund raising with a $100,000 contribution.

Financial donations can be made to www. redcross.org.au/disaster, www.salvos.org.au (disaster relief), Lifeline Queensland on 1800 961 881 and www.vinnies.org.au/donate.

Donations can also be made via Givit – www.givit.org.au.

“I thank fire crews, police, emergency authorities, volunteers and support organisations for their outstanding efforts in protecting our communities so far,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Now it’s time to dig deep for people who’ve lost homes or other property.

“We need the public to remain vigilant, report fires early and follow the advice of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and other authorities.

“This is the first time we’ve experienced conditions like this so early in the season and the bushfire threat will be with us for several months,” the Premier said.

Jenny Broderick Candidate for Division 1 The decision to run for Division 1 at the next Sunshine Coast Council election has been one that Glass House local Jenny Broderick has thought long and hard about.

“My business experience, volunteering in community events and co-parenting four schoolaged children has enabled me to see ways in which our community representation can be vastly improved,” Jenny said.

Do you know what to do in a bushfire?

The recent fires around Peregian remind us all that we need to be bushfire aware.

We live in an area that is not immune to the devastating effects of bushfires.

If you don’t think you’re at risk, the Queensland Rural Fire Service (QFRS) wants you to ask yourself the following questions: Do you live within a few kilometres of bushland?

Does your local area have a bushfire history?

Do you have trees and shrubs within 20m of your house?

Is your home built on a slope?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, you are likely to be at a heightened risk.

The QFRS suggests that we all take some time to be prepared.

Prepare your home, property and family now and have your bushfire survival plan in place before a bushfire strikes.

If you do not have a bushfire survival plan, the QFRS website (www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/BushFire_Safety) has an easy-to-use guide to help you create one.

The website looks at what you can do to prepare for bushfire season, what to consider if you plan to stay in the event of a bushfire, what you need to know if you decide to leave early, and how to keep up to date with information on fire risks and situations.

In the event of a fire, here’s what QFRS suggests: Activate your bushfire survival plan.

Advise family and friends of your plan.

Listen to your local radio station or visit the QFRS website for regular updates.

Close windows and doors to minimise smoke exposure.

If you suffer from a respiratory condition, keep your medication close by.

Drive with caution in low visibility conditions.

Contact your neighbours to check if they need help to prepare for the bushfire.

Pack important documents and essential items (eg, passports, birth certificates, prescription medication, food and water, and protective clothing) in case you need to leave the area.

Put on protective clothing (eg, a longsleeved cotton shirt, boots with thick soles).

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Bring pets inside - restrain them with a leash, a cage or inside a secure room - and provide them with plenty of water.

Take action to protect your livestock.

Move flammable materials such as doormats, wheelie bins and outdoor furniture away from your house.

Fill containers such as your bath, sinks and buckets with water so you have access to drinking water and firefighting water.

Close windows and doors, sealing the gaps under doors and screens with wet towels to keep smoke out of the house.

Knowing a few of these simple things could help save your life or that of a loved one or neighbour.

About 30 members of the Sunshine Coast music scene have banded together to fight suicide through song.

Sunshine Coast All Stars have recorded R U OK, a song that has the same sentiments as R U OK? Day held last Thursday, September 12, and will raise money for the suicide prevention strategy.

The song was written by Currimundi’s Robz Godfrey, of indie-rock-reggae outfit Mantis Empire, after a family member was bitten by “the black dog” of depression.

“I’ve got a daughter who suffers with her mental health. At one stage, she was on 24-hour suicide watch. That was my motivation to get this project started,” Mr Godfrey said.

“It just sort of came to me. I thought, ‘Why hasn’t anything happened? Why hasn’t anyone done this yet?'

“I think I knew exactly what I wanted. I started playing and put down a melody. Lots of times it takes months and months for a song to come together but I sat and nutted this one out, the acoustic version, in a couple of hours.”

Mr Godfrey began approaching contacts in the music industry with a view to recording the song.

Producer engineer Angus Woodhead, of Glasshouse Studios, was one of the first to come on board, donating recording and engineering services. Cam ‘Supacam’ Standen agreed to be executive producer and co-wrote some of the song. Chris Mitchell-Clare, of Mitchell-Clare

Mr Woodhead, of Beerwah, said it was a “no brainer” for him to get involved.

“To be honest and open I have struggled with mental health for many years and in the past definitely considered suicide on more than one occasion,” Mr Woodhead said.

“It was only through my faith in God and with the support of my wife, family and friends plus Sunshine Coast Mental Health Service that I was able to get on the right medication, which fixed a chemical imbalance I had in my brain that I attribute to heavy drug use in my 20s,” he said.

“Just three weeks ago, a friend of mine committed suicide. This is a very real issue in today’s society. People are tragically taking their own lives all the time.”

Mr Standen, a Brisbane-based music producer of 30 years and a social worker of 15 years in youth and disability, said he was privileged to have been part of the project.

“When asked to take on this project as the executive producer, I jumped at the opportunity knowing and experiencing the impact that suicide has in our communities amongst the young people and those with disabilities,” Mr Standen said.

Noosa resident Mr Mitchell-Clare, who has also gone through dark times and has lost a friend to suicide, said it made sense for him to turn his passion for pictures to the cause.

charity song “I’ve gone through depression on and off. I’ve suffered from anxiety. There’s personal motives behind it. I just think it’s the right thing to do for the community,” Mr Mitchell-Clare said.

“I want to make it visually relatable to people, that there’s other people going through the same thing and they’re not alone, that there’s help out there.

I’m doing this for the love of it and the passion, and the drive to do something for the community.”

Twenty-six vocalists and musicians from the Sunshine Coast, plus other industry professionals, volunteered their time for the production.

In the tradition of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ and ‘We Are The World’, each artist sings different lines, although practicalities dictated the recording process was a little different to that used for the famous 1980s fundraisers.

“It’s hard to get 20-odd singers all in the same room at the same time. Once we got a good bed track down, they came in and did their vocals at different times and then we picked out the gold in each,” Mr Godfrey said.

He said he was humbled at the way his contemporaries had weighed in to support the idea.

“Obviously, a lot of artists are busy, but we managed to rake up some serious musical talent and here we are, we’ve got a track and we’re extremely happy with it,” he said.

The result is a much more contemporary version of the slow rock tune Mr Godfrey wrote a year ago but he is excited at what they have produced.

Mr Godfrey said he hoped the song would remind people going through dark periods that they were not alone and would hopefully encourage them to reach out and talk about their troubles.

“It’s okay to feel down and depressed. Others do. I think isolating one’s self is one of the worst things that someone who is suffering can do,” he said.

Mr Godfrey said all funds raised from sales/ downloads of R U OK would be donated to the R U OK? suicide prevention charity.

Community News New playground to deliver big smiles Beerwah’s much-loved Turner Park has been rejuvenated with the completion of a highly anticipated new playground for children of all ages.

The old playground was replaced as part of the Sunshine Coast Council’s community led master plan for this district level park.

Uniquely designed to help kids stay active and build confidence, the playground incorporates the town’s fruit farming history in the toddler section and boasts an 8.5m tall multi-level play tower.

The tower is only the second of its kind in Queensland and features impressive climbing options as well as an incredible spiral slide and traditional slide.

Council’s division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski said the community had called for the redevelopment of Turner Park and their vision was to transform the location into a destination playground for Glasshouse Country townships and beyond.

“The new playground is really designed to suit different age groups and boasts so many more unique components than the old swing and slide set that had been there since my kids played on them,” Cr Baberowski said.

“Together with the shelters, toilets and barbecue, it’s a playground package that’s sure to attract people from well beyond to Beerwah.

“In today’s high-tech age, playgrounds give our youngest residents the opportunity to meet other children while learning, exploring and physically developing while having fun outdoors.

“With the weather warming up, I love that it’s already in a seriously shaded setting thanks to the existing vegetation and mature trees.

“The team did a great job of setting it into the existing vegetation, so it’s ready to go for this summer, unlike other new playgrounds where the vegetation and trees often need years to develop,” he said.

The facilities have received the thumbs-up from local eight-year-old Jack Ives (pictured), who was the first to test out the thrilling new attractions with his family.

“It’s really big and fun. It’s got lots of different things to do,” Jack said.

“The flying fox and the swings are really good but the big slide is my favourite.

“It’s a cool new park. It’s got a big kids section and a little kids section so there’s something for everyone.”

Maleny launches 18-hole member drive with three-year deal Maleny Golf Club is offering a special three-year membership option to new members as it prepares to bring the final six holes of the award-winning Sunshine Coast hinterland course into play in early 2020.

Maleny Golf Club, which opened in 2015, is known for its welcoming country hospitality and still has significant growth capacity to accommodate new male, female and junior members interested in playing socially or competitively.

There is currently no nomination fee. Anyone taking up the $2,244 offer will enjoy full gold membership from the day they sign up until October 31 2022 and avoid anticipated annual fee increases in the meantime. The 2019/2020 full gold membership fee will be $748.

The current 12-hole, par-46 course incorporates an environmentally low-impact design by golf architect Graham Papworth that preserves and integrates existing wetlands and native flora.

The completed 18-hole course will be comprised of two par 5s, ten par 4s and six par 3s, presenting a par 68 layout featuring unique revetted greenside bunkering, Tifdwarf Bermudagrass greens and kikuyu fairways within a peaceful, scenic hinterland setting.

Young couple seek support to continue farming Three years ago, young Perth couple Kat Atkinson and Dan Tibbett packed up their busy city life in Perth, WA, and travelled across country to the Sunshine Coast hinterland. They haven’t looked back since starting their mushroom farm, Mountaintop Mushrooms.

Seeking a lifestyle change and chasing a desire to produce rather than consume, the young couple were drawn to the beautiful lush region. Being a relatively new and niche industry, they weren’t sure what to expect but as their passion grew, so did their popularity and their production has grown considerably over the past 18 months.

Kat and Dan started their farm with very little but determination and curiosity has resulted in their products - which are not only tasty, but stunning to look at – being extremely well received. To their knowledge, they are the only farm on the Sunshine Coast growing a variety of oyster, shitake and lion’s mane mushrooms. They supply a number of local restaurants, as well as directly to the public.

On top of both working part-time jobs, as the demand to supply produce grows so does the need to farm, which means they need to upgrade their systems to keep up. They are calling on the support of the community to help them continue the successful function of their farm.

“Choosing to become a farmer is not an easy decision,” Kat said.

“You know you’re faced with hard work, long hours and minimal income but for us it was more a calling of the heart - we were drawn to grow organic, nutritious food and medicine.

“It’s something we hope to continue to do with

Kat and Dan are currently running a campaign through Pozible. “We’re also really passionate about educating others and have a number of workshops booked in for later this year”.

Twinnies’ fence gets a revamp It’s an exciting time of year for the Twinnies Pelican and Sea Bird Rescue, with their premises on Steve Irwin Way at Landsborough receiving an exciting revamp to the entrance.

The bright green fence, complete with handpainted cut-outs of their beloved pelicans, was finished last week and the Twinnies’ mum Helen Powers says they’re excited about their new look and grateful to those who helped make it happen.

“We’re so pleased with the new look and we hope to be a little easier to spot for those wanting to come and see all the great work we do here,” she said.

Other great news coming from the Twinnies’ camp is that they recently welcomed some new baby pelican chicks who have recently hatched.

After the fanfare of being announced in early 2016, work on the long-awaited water park at Glenview has again been postponed.

Developers Sanad Capital have requested a two-year extension on their operational works permit from Sunshine Coast Council, taking the timeframe out to September 2021 for the project to break ground.

This is at odds with their previously stated position when they lodged an amendment to a material change of use approval.

A cover letter lodged with the amendment dated May 27, 2019 said: “We would also appreciate council’s expedited issue of the confirmation notice, so that the necessary referral to the state can be made. We note that timing is critical, as our client is intending on lodging the next stage within the coming weeks, so we greatly appreciate council’s cooperation.”

Sanad Capital and council have been at loggerheads in the Planning and Environment Court in a disagreement over the amount of stormwater infrastructure charges imposed by council under the original development approval.

A mediation meeting in late July failed to resolve the dispute, with the judge now listing the matter for review on September 20.

Meet the Indigenous elders The Sunshine Coast Reconciliation Group will host the next seminar in its series of shared history events. It will be happening in Maleny to introduce the local Indigenous elders from the Jinibara traditional custodians.

Elders from the Jinibara First Nations people will be talking about their culture and history in the hinterland.

The event will be held in the Maleny Community Centre (main hall) on Wednesday, September 25, from 10.30am-1.30pm with morning tea provided.

The group is planning a follow-up seminar early next year to pursue in more depth ideas and questions raised in this seminar by local Maleny people.

Community Groups Bridge club celebrate

The Maleny Contract Bridge Club celebrates 25 years of playing bridge in Maleny on Monday, September 16.

It was 25 years ago when 16 people interested in bridge met with the objective of forming a social competitive bridge club in Maleny. The founding member of the club, Lynton Bourke, is still an active member.

The club was based at the Maleny RSL for 24 years and appreciates their support over all those years.

Fourteen years ago, as the number of members increased, the hunt for a site for a purpose-built club house began. Finally, two years ago the club signed a sub-lease with Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club for land on the Maleny precinct and, with the full support of members, a new purpose-built premises was constructed.

The club has continued to grow and now has about 130 members. Sessions are held on Mondays at 12.30pm, Tuesdays at 6.30pm and Thursdays at 12.30pm. The club also has a walk-in supervised play/practise session on Wednesdays at 9.30am.

On the first Saturday of the month at 12.30pm the club holds a more relaxed social session. The club regularly conducts introduction to bridge classes and also has classes for more advanced players.

The Maleny Contract Bridge Club welcomes new members or people interested in learning to play this fascinating game.

The family Bible of William and Mary Grigor shows handwritten entries of the birth of nine children. However, not all survived infancy. In the 1870s three young children were buried on the 160 acre Bankfoot House property.

The sixth child, David, hadn’t reached his first birthday before succumbing to diphtheria on April 7, 1874.

A seventh son, Robert Henry, was born in August 1875 but at four years of age he is believed to have died from a snake bite on October 21, 1879.

Twin girls, Clementina and Margaret, were born in July 1878 but unfortunately an allergy took Margaret after just ten weeks of life. The remaining twin did survive and ultimately married William Smith Burgess to become the second generation of the Grigor family to own Bankfoot House.

All three children along with an Aboriginal playmate were buried within a far boundary of the original property. The graves are unmarked and today are located in a privately owned subdivision on Old Gympie Road.

In June 1981, the Ferris family installed a memorial plaque outside the boundary of the private property but adjacent to the grave sites. The timing of the plaque’s placement coincided with the 80th birthday of Jack Ferris, the last resident of Bankfoot House.

It is assumed the reason for burying the children so far from the homestead was the greater depth of soil nearer Coonowrin Creek.

Jack’s son Bill Ferris assisted his father to install the memorial.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association With Charne Turner The sounds of spring have arrived in the rainforest with the return of seasonal birds courting, ready to build their nests and the joyous chorusing of frogs from the ponds.

The new theme in the Discovery Centre is Birds on Show and it will run for the next few months.

Other news includes the book launch on Saturday, November 2 in the centre theatrette of a beautiful new Friends of Mary Cairncross Association publication edited by the late (and great) Les Hall: ‘The Magic of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve - a Celebration of Art and Nature’.

It includes 126 original artworks, with the foreword by Tim Flannery and a preface by Steve Parish. It is destined to be loved by locals and visitors alike. An exhibition of the book’s artworks will be on display at the centre for two weeks following the launch.

In the not too distant future, the second edition of the popular book ‘Birds of Mary Cairncross’, which has recently been out of print, will hit the shelves.

The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association’s AGM will be held at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve at 9.30am on Saturday, October 19.

Holiday Motoring Holidaying in drought affected areas will make a difference After the north Queensland floods earlier this year, Tourism and Events Queensland engaged in a campaign to encourage southerners to holiday in Townsville, Tropical North Queensland and the Whitsundays.

Not only would visitors be financially assisting businesses in the area and, as a consequence maintaining local employment, but money was also given back to the community through a St Vincent de Paul Society fund to support the ongoing recovery efforts.

As a result, more than $7 million in special holiday packages were sold to travellers, which brought in many times that figure in total extra financial benefits to the region. More than $20,000 was also raised for the St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies) North Queensland Flood Appeal.

With so many regional areas now suffering economically as a result of the ravages of drought, it’s important to remember that we can all make a real difference to these towns just by travelling to them and spending time (and money) and having a holiday there.

Federal Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud is encouraging more people to visit regional communities to help generate an alternative income as the drought continues.

"I encourage every Australian, if they want to do their bit for farmers and regional and rural communities, get off your arse and get out there," he said.

Refuel, buy a coffee, stay a few nights, go to the supermarket, visit a tourist

attraction … these are tangible ways of helping people living in regional areas of Queensland.

It is not just all about business either. Tourism also provides a boost for the morale of towns suffering under stress.

Some in the tourism industry are suggesting that a great way to support farmers is, instead of staying in a resort or hotel, you might like to book into a farm stay or hosted farm accommodation.

This way you get to experience exactly what they are going through, as well as directly assisting their financial sustainability.

So, you just need to decide where it is you want to travel for your vacation stay.

Scenic Rim, Darling Downs, the Granite Belt, Capricorn region, the Gemfields, Maranoa, Channel Country or the Mitchell grass plains … the choices are as big as Queensland.

At the same time, our farmers could do with a holiday as well.

From farm dam to wetland habitat

Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare (MRWL) will run a workshop on how to transform your farm dam to wetland habitat at the MRWL Native Nursery in Glenview on Saturday, October 19.

Workshop organiser Karen Schmidt said the workshop was developed due to a strong interest from MRWL members and local people on how farm dams can be enhanced to benefit our local flora and fauna.

“Many landholders are keen to create or recreate their dam as a dual purpose feature on their property, a wetland oasis for native fauna, a productive source of fish and crustaceans, while still serving the traditional roles of stock watering, irrigation and bushfire protection,” Karen said.

Farm dams can be tricky environments to rehabilitate as they usually have steep sides and hard clay soils.

The workshop will provide tips and tricks to navigate these unique site characteristics including the creation of micro-habitats, adding variations to the dam edge gradient, stock access control options, revegetation tips and much more.

The expert presenter, Phil Moran from Noosa and District Landcare, encourages attendees to bring along plant samples from their own dams for identification and advice on their use or removal.

Natural wetlands are increasingly in short supply but farm dams are in abundance. With appropriate management, much needed wetland habitats for native wildlife can be provided while also improving water quality for stock and farm uses.

Concern over water supply

Many people in Mooloolah have had interruptions to their water supply in the past week.

Where we live, there have been times each day when there has been no water at all.

When I phoned Unitywater they said that this was because of fires. The fires have been some distance away so it looks like the water supply capacity is just not good enough.

On Brandenburg Road, just above Viewland Drive, there are two fire hydrants. Obviously, these are not getting enough water so when there is a hot day there will be inadequate pressure there for firefighting.

At our address we have often lost water over the past seven years. There is a very good reservoir on Brandenburg Road that was in use until it was taken out of service about seven years ago. It's quite urgent that it be put back into service.

I have been contacting Unitywater over the past seven years and the situation is getting worse, not better.

So that's why I write to the newspaper, so that the general public knows that there is a perfectly good water reservoir in Mooloolah that used to be a backup supply but which is now out of service.

We just don't think this is good enough, particularly when bushfires are likely to increase. If there are really serious bushfires in the Glass House area like there was in 1990, it is clear that Unitywater will not be able to provide an adequate supply. It is urgent to get this reservoir going again.

For those who drive through Peachester three warning titbits. First, the eastern end of the school hours 40km zone has been extended and now includes the shop and cafe. The 40km sign is now near the public toilets.

Second, a recommendation: do not stop outside the school gate, even just while someone gets out of or into the car. That side of the service road is no standing (apart from school buses). If all the parking slots are full and there is nowhere along there to stop legally, continue down the service road and turn left after the church onto the hall’s grassed parking area, where you are welcome to park, and walk down the concrete footpath to the school gate.

Third, if your aim is to reach the school, use the northern entrance from Peachester Road to the service road; if your aim is the hall or church, use the southern entrance.

Because of the surprising number of drivers from the west who don’t see or who ignore the township’s 40km signs, until the flashing lights are installed we encourage the sight of a police vehicle, particularly during school hours.

However, encouraging a police presence is a coin that has two sides to it.

Government spending

We can tell a lot about governments by watching their spending. Queensland Labor is funding 60,000 free TAFE places for youth. It is also supporting (with $20,000 per person) small businesses in regions to employ a young jobseeker. This contrasts sharply with the way the LNP is underpaying and wrongly punishing people who cannot find jobs.

The Morrison government is about to spend millions on punitive drug testing, which will not reduce drug dependency. Labor by contrast is educating, respecting and creating real jobs.

Very high fire danger in plantation forests With spring bringing raging wildfires across Queensland, HQPlantations reminds visitors to its plantation forests to take care in hot, dry weather and consider staying out of plantations and other forested areas during periods of high fire danger.

“With no significant rainfall for over two months in SEQ and longer in other parts of the state, the plantations are extremely dry at the moment,” HQPlantations regional forest manager for coastal and central Queensland, Michael Robinson, said.

“Long range weather forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology and the fire season update from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services both indicate we’re in for a very hot, dry spring and early summer,” he said.

“Very high fire danger is not only related to temperature but also low humidity, wind speed and the amount of dry vegetation.

“Public safety in the event of a fire is our priority. However, public access can also bring a higher risk of fires starting due to hot exhausts in proximity with dry grass and unsafe behaviour like discarding cigarettes or making campfires,” Mr Robinson said.

Fire bans will continue into next week in many areas of Queensland but lighting fires, including campfires, in plantations is illegal at any time.

Mr Robinson is appealing to the public to take this advice seriously to help ensure all those who work, visit and live near HQPlantations forests remain safe.

Hinterland Families Guppy’s kids learn by doing

Kids at Guppy’s Early Learning Centre in Beerwah have some new items to play and learn with thanks to a donation from Shell Beerwah.

After recently updating the manual price board to digital signage, Shell Beerwah no longer needed the old numbers.

Frances Ross from Shell Beerwah said there were quite a few numbers left over and they were eager to find a use for them.

“We racked our brains as to who might be able to benefit and we thought how great they would be as a learning tool for young children,” she said.

“We spoke to Rebecca and she was more than happy to take them off our hands.”

Rebecca Swan from Guppy’s Early Learning Centre said the donation of the numbers was wonderful, particularly for the kindy program as they focus on numeracy and literacy.

“It gives us another resource and a different way of teaching, which is really beneficial in helping our children learn.”

Thirteen eager Peachester State School students recently joined a green army of more than 135,000 kids who have taken responsibility for their communities and fought to make amazing changes in the world since Kids in Action began in 1999.

Demonstrating spear making techniques This year, the Peachester students chose the djandurr, the yellow-tailed black cockatoo, as their totem, taking the great responsibility of educating hundreds of Sunshine Coast students about the sustainability of this species and caring for it for generations to come.

Lily, 10, explained that the one thing that she took away from the experience was that it is not I, me and my future….it is us, we and our future.

Kindergarten open day this Thursday Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre is excited to be opening its doors to the public this Thursday, September 19 for its Kindergarten Open Day. Parents, guardians and, of course, children are welcome to come and see all the centre has to offer. “This is a great way to come and have a chat with our teachers about our guidelines and how we help prepare kids for their future years.”

Centre staff are committed to providing an immersive, interactive and engaging approach to early childhood learning. The centre offers a number of innovative opportunities to allow children to thrive including tailored physical education and music programs, the highly regarded Bush Kindy program, a specialised healthy eating program supported by the company’s own kitchen facility and more. One new program the centre is excited to be offering families is the opportunity for kindergarten students to attend weekly swimming lessons at Swimfit Beerwah. The centre will provide transport and supervision of children to and from the pool and Dee said they were working hard on getting this up and running in coming weeks.

From the churches True contentment How do we find true contentment? Our lives can be so busy these days and it is sometimes hard to focus on simple pleasures. How do we describe our roles in life? Would we say that we are a mother/ grandparent/wife/partner/teacher/friend/nurse/carer/ cleaner/volunteer? Or is the way we spend our time too complicated to sum up in one single title? I suspect that this is so for most of us.

Many of us have had several different working roles during our lives – these may have provided some sense of worth and fulfilment as well as remuneration but our work was never meant to define us. My job as a parish priest may lead people to think of me as a certain stereotype but that is not all there is to me. We are all more than what can be seen at first glance.

Rev Jeanette Jamieson Maleny Anglican Parish In the Book of Ecclesiastes, Chapter 2, the writer speaks of the ultimate futility of putting our work above everything else. We have all known people who are workaholics but this biblical passage reminds us to take care because all our personal striving will not bring about that peace we long for and may ultimately cause us grief and pain.

Instead, we find true knowledge, peace and joy from the hand of God. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul speaks of having learned to be content with whatever he has in any situation.

He continues by stating: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can do all things through Christ who strengthens meâ&#x20AC;?. (Philippians 4.13) Being content and satisfied with what we have is an important part of the art of contentment. We can make the choice to be happy or unhappy.

Whatever our lot, we can take a deep breath and smile. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about being content with less - with a simpler life, rather than always wanting more and never being satisfied. We also need to accept ourselves and others as we and they are. People who are content tend not to complain and have a more positive attitude. Counting our blessings, thanking God, taking the time to value life and the people around us and showing appreciation will lead us to a life of true contentment.

Carly O’Donnohuge from Stepping Out Podiatry recently shared a story with GC&M News about a patient who had not been running for about 12 months due to shin splint pain and an Achilles injury. He was eager to meet the challenge of competing in an iron man event in 18 months’ time.

Carly said she started with assessing his functional movement and identifying his running technique faults and muscular weaknesses.

“We then continued assessing every movement from heel strike to knee thrust,” she said.

“After programming new running techniques

to improve performance we moved to concentrate on pain management and rehabilitation of his shin splints and Achilles injury.

“The patient had been pounding the pavement in an old pair of trainers he had used in the gym for over six months.

“We explained how the rubbers in shoes compress and change shape with repetitive use and that we must get him into a dedicated running shoe and a second set to help his calf and ankle tightness.

“Within four weeks his shin splints had started to reduce. During this time we incorporated dry needling and shockwave therapy in the clinic once

a week.

“Second to this, we discovered he had one leg longer than the other, which was corrected with fully customised 3D printed orthotics. We integrated a small heel raise adjustment on one device to bring him back to level.

“He has now started to see results and his long-term symptoms are under control and he is even breaking through the target times we had set to achieve,” Carly said.

Top calendar shots chosen This year’s Rotary photographic competition saw almost 40 entrants vie for bragging rights by having their photo of the Glass House Mountains featured in the 2020 Rotary calendar.

The people’s choice winner was by Natasha Vogler from Glass House Mountains with her photo taken from near Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve looking back over the mountains, with Daisy the cow front and centre.

Twelve photos (from 11 photographers) were chosen to grace each month of the year. From the quality on display, the final printed calendar will look spectacular.

Organiser Ilia Starkovsky said that the calendars would be for sale at all newsagents throughout the region, as well as a number of other locations.

In the Garden Celebrating the great Aussie lawn

Lawn fanatics far and wide gathered at Beerburrum last Saturday, September 14 to share their devotion to all things grass.

LawnFest, now in its third year, is the only festival in the country for people who have an interest in lawns and want to know more.

Organiser and co-founder of Australian Lawn Fanatics, Rusty Garton, said the backyard lawn had formed part of Aussie culture throughout the years and LawnFest offered a way to celebrate its importance in all aspects of life.

LawnFest 2019 was held at Go Turf on Mekins Road, Beerburrum bringing the nation’s lawn enthusiasts together to celebrate the real joys and virtues of lawn.

“From beginners at the start of their lawn journey to lawn fanatics and families, especially young children, the event was an education on all things turf-related - from the paddock, to harvest and finally how a new lawn can be laid and maintained,” Rusty said.

LawnFest is the brainchild of the Australian Lawn Fanatics, which is a premium lawn improvement group based on Facebook that attracts lawn lovers and those who want advice on their lawn.

Rusty said the festival was also a chance to welcome in spring, when many homeowners planned to renovate their lawn.

“Research has found that a great looking lawn can increase a house’s sale price by about $70,000,” he said.

Rusty said that there had been a surge in well-kept front yards in recent years.

“A lot of it comes down to people wanting to take pride in their property,” he said.

“They also want somewhere fun that looks nice, lush and comfortable for the kids and pets to play on.”

Estimates are that between 250 - 300 attended the day, with visitors asked for a gold coin donation, with proceeds going to Empower Golf, a charity that facilitates and promotes golf for less able Australians. Raffles on the day also raised over $1000 for the Endeavour Foundation supporting people with an intellectual disability.

From Forest Heart Nursery

If like me you’re a fan of sharing your garden with native fauna, then here’s a few tips on providing habitat for our native animals. In particular we’ll discuss birds but these tips will increase habitat for a wide range of fauna.

The bulk of plants used in mainstream native gardens are cultivar grevilleas, banksias and bottlebrushes. These are all amazing flowering plants that add colour, variety and are great nectar sources. However, if they are the dominant plants in your native garden and they are surrounded by large open areas of lawn then aggressive birds such as rainbow lorikeets and the common (or noisy) miners will often dominate to the exclusion of more timid birds.

My tip here is to add different levels to your planting such as groundcovers and grasses, a diversity of shrubs and trees, and bushier plantings that give smaller or timid birds somewhere to hide. Apart from plants and the resources they provide, water is crucial for wildlife and you can supply this in the form of a pond or bird bath (just make sure small shallow containers are regularly cleaned as they can spread disease). But I digress - back to the plants.

Edible seed-bearing grasses such as kangaroo grass, poa, lomandra and bamboo grass can increase habitat for smaller birds, with the added bonus that these grasses provide valuable nesting material. It’s the picture of parental persistence watching tiny red brow finches trying to keep their balance as they take flight with a length of grass ten times their height to build their nests.

Don’t forget fruiting plants such as flax lilly, midyim, breynia, muttonwood, bleeding heart, blueberry ash, native elderberry and velvet leaf provide sustenance for a great variety of birds including Lewin’s honeyeaters, emerald doves, bower birds, king parrots and currawongs. More bird diversity in your garden also helps with insect control and promotes a natural balance.

For containing your harvests, blueberries do well in a pot as do strawberries, jaboticaba, dwarf citrus, pomegranate and many more. A pot of leafy greens is also great near the kitchen because fresh is best!

AFL grand finalists Contributed by Craig Bales Congratulations to the U14s Glasshouse Hinterland Lions who qualified for the AFL grand final after a fantastic year.

Winning five games in a row, coming into the grand final there was a real buzz around the team that they might be able to pull off a boilover and beat Coolum. Unfortunately, Coolum were too strong on the day and continued their undefeated season.

The Glasshouse team played their hearts out and

it wasn’t for trying that they didn’t win. Cody Hall was awarded the best on ground medal for his efforts on the day.

With a mixture of U14, U12 and U15 girls in the team, this was a real combined effort by the club.

The support from the volunteers, parents and supporters throughout the year made it a pleasure to be involved with the group.

The team would also like to thank BRM Tree Services for sponsorship. The team looked fantastic in their new jerseys.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails managed to win two sets against the top team Maleny Racqueteers. An enjoyable day of tennis was had by all but the Racqueteers were the winners on the day. Thanks to Jan Maguire, Suzie Billett, Cynthia Garvie & Sonia Douglas.

Whistlers played at Mooloolaba against the Legends. Warm but not windy, it was a good day for tennis. Every game was close and had 3 tie-breaker sets. It was very close but we were a bit short of games. Score was 33-37 games 3-5 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Annie Quarmby, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper.

The Wildcats were at home to Mooloolaba Martinis. A gorgeous day for tennis and a very good win to the Wildcats. Pauline Fraley, Stacey English, Jenie Riding and Sonia Douglas defeating the opposition 6-2 sets, 43-20 games.

The Witta Wikings put up a good fight against the top team from Nambour but it just wasn't to be. The team had two women playing as men, because we all know girls are better, but it still wasn't enough, good effort though by No John,

Glenno, Annie Quarmby, Stacey Sweet Stuff, Nat with the hat and Lobster the birthday girl. Sadly, this was our last match of the season as we have the bye next round but we're already looking forward to next season, after the epic Christmas/ New Year’s team party.

Witta Wompoos displayed some sensational tennis to defeat their nemesis Gympie Bronze 9 sets 68 games to 3 sets 50 games on Sunday in the Sunshine Coast Veterans tennis league. The games were not as easy as the scores suggest with 5 tight tie break sets played going Witta’s way 3 to 2. Haydyn Craven got his money’s worth of tennis participating in 3 tie break sets winning 2 with Paula Cudmore coming through to win all four sets she participated in. We look forward to playing Nambour Nambas at home in October.

Contributed by Ken Barker Wallace Roy and Priscilla Vickers were pitted against Gillian Bradley and Stuart Craig in a practise session on Saturday, September 7 where Sarah Widin coached Wallace and Priscilla and Vince Carbery coached Gillian and Stuart. No scores were recorded but the competition was fierce and the play good.

On Sunday, September 8 Donna Manning, Wallace and Donny Griffiths played several games of golf croquet on lawn two. The first game was won by Donna with scores of 6, 4 and 5 respectively. The second was won by Wallace with scores of 3, 5 and 4 respectively. Donna then retired and Wallace won the final game 7–5.

Meanwhile on lawn one Kath Smith and Sarah played an eight-all draw. Ken Barker and Nick Cram had a very entertaining game which Ken won 15–14. Nick played a spectacular two ball break from hoop one to hoop four with the black ball, peeling blue through hoop one on the way.

The last round of the Lochwood Shield was played on Wednesday, September 11. Maleny fielded its entire team of Donna, Vince, Nick and Ken. George Osborne and Colin Harris played for Coolum. Ken won his game against George 15-12. Donna went down to Colin in a close game 19–21 while Vince and Nick lost to George and Colin 10–14. This meant that Coolum won the round two games to one and also, subject to stewards checking the weights, the Lochwood Shield. They are to be congratulated on both counts. For our Lochwood team it has been an enjoyable competition. Thanks to the organisers and we will be back next year.

Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays.

These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are on Thursdays and Sundays at 1pm for 1.30pm.

You will have above average skills using MS Office 365, and be available for approx 14 hours a week, in the office, to fulfil your duties.

Those duties include attending meetings (once a month, on a Sunday morning), writing minutes, dealing with stakeholders, and completing admin tasks associated with running the Sub-Branch.

You will report to the President and must be prepared to take on a high level of accountability and trust, and be able to work autonomously.

Training will be provided, and prior experience working with a Board or committee will be beneficial.
