Local News What a difference a week makes

In the past week the situation in Australia has changed dramatically with the declaration that COVID-19 is now officially a pandemic.

With the increase in the number of cases being confirmed in Queensland and Australia, decisions are being made and updated at a rapid rate, making it difficult for us as a weekly newspaper to keep our printed information current and useful for readers.

As always, GC&M News is keen to ensure that we are only providing correct information, which we will be doing between editions on our Facebook page and via our e-subscription list.

During the past fortnight, readers may have heard of locals who had returned from travelling to specific countries and self-isolating in their homes for 14 days.

However, the significant change that was introduced at the weekend was that anyone arriving in Australia, which will include many local people returning home from travel, will have to self-isolate for 14 days from midnight last Sunday.

Fines can be imposed on people who do not follow this advice and police will be doing random checks.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the move to self-isolation was aimed at slowing the spread of coronavirus through the community.

"This is very important. What we've seen in recent weeks is more countries having issues with the virus and that means the source of some of those transmissions is coming from more and more countries," he said.

Mr Morrison also confirmed that from last Monday,

non-essential events attracting more than 500 people are banned.

The Prime Minister said the ban would apply to “static” gatherings where people sit close to each other for a prolonged period of time.

At the time of going to print (Monday morning), no decision had been made to close schools. However, like everything, this could happen before you get to read this story.

Governments are looking at specific guidelines for upcoming Anzac Day events, which are just over a month away.

There may also be restrictions or special arrangements for people visiting aged care facilities.

Other restrictions covering gatherings in enclosed spaces were to be considered by governments on Tuesday evening.

As the impact of the virus in Queensland changes, health advice will change, so it is important to get up-to-date advice from credible sources such as the Queensland Department of Health, which you can access at www.health.qld.gov.au/coronavirus, or like the Facebook page of local health service Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service.

Local News Groundswell of support for sportsground

By Greg Brown Community members have come out en masse to show overwhelming support for the Beerwah Sportsground following a story last week in Glasshouse Country & Maleny News outlining the dire financial position of the Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee (BSMC).

A GC&M News Facebook post on the story has been viewed more than 34,000 times and garnered almost 100 comments, making it one of the hottest topics ever on our social media page.

Dismayed that the major income source from caravan rallies at the sportsground had been lost, most comments reflected the same message the sportsground is a valued stop for travellers, campers contribute considerably to the local economy and how could Sunshine Coast Council let this happen?

Even the past councillor for the area, Anna Grosskreutz, has been driven to comment.

“This story makes me so angry and disappointed in council,” Anna posted.

“So many have given decades of service to this sportsground to provide a place for community to enjoy. Volunteer management committee members have gone above and beyond to source funds to pay the bills without constantly raising fees.

“This has saved Sunshine Coast Council hundreds of thousands in maintenance costs. Roll your sleeves up councillors and council and sort this

Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski has advised GC&M News that council is completely aware of the sportsground’s value to the community and the remarkable contribution it has made over decades.

“Unfortunately, the issue is that council received a new formal complaint, following a history of several complaints from multiple sources.

Because of this, council has been forced to more strictly enforce the terms of the licence agreed to by all parties in 2014, ” Cr Baberowski said.

protect the sportsground from putting itself into legal jeopardy.

“I have called emergency meetings with the acting CEO and council’s executive team to discuss the sportsground management committee’s financial situation, and what council can do to help.”

Danny Watters, a past sportsground stayer: “The sportsground camping is a major drawcard and asset to the area and increases tourism and financial support to the town locals.

“We stay there regularly as there is no other option because of the size of our rig and it's been our preferred stop for years.

“Council are elected to work and help the community not be detrimental to the area, business, locals; you close it you lose our support as there is nowhere else to stay. So your shops, locals will unfortunately lose out financially.”

To make matters worse, the sportsground committee has received an underwhelming response from council to their plea for help.

BSMC emailed council asking for a positive way forward to resolve the situation. Helen Weil, of the BSMC, received a response from acting chief executive officer Warren Bunker giving little hope.

Helen is exasperated with the council’s lack of consideration or understanding.

“Don’t they understand? We only have a matter of months before we have no money to look after the sportsground,” Helen said.

“We were appealing to council for support but they’ve just given us empty words.

“I feel very sorry for all the sporting clubs who use the grounds, all the visitors who came to stay and all the locals who enjoy the facilities, as we can’t see how we’re going to survive with council washing their hands of us in this way.”

That response from council is mirrored in a reply that Judy Tomlinson, the Glasshouse Country project officer, received to her call for urgent support for the BSMC.

“It is hoped that the Beerwah Sportsground committee and community leaders can meet with you and other council staff this week so we can avert the closing of this vital community facility,” Judy wrote to the acting CEO. In response, Sheryl Krome, council’s manager customer response (council-speak for local laws), sent Judy a four-page explanation of the reasons why the BSMC is forbidden from doing what it has been doing for years, which is to host caravan and recreational vehicle club events when they hold rallies in the region.

Judy received not one positive suggestion in the correspondence as to how council could assist the BSMC in a way forward.

Ms Krome reinforced the council view that these large organised caravanning rallies enjoying the hospitality of the region and the local businesses are not considered by council to be an ‘event’.

Cr Baberowski said council officers were very sympathetic.

“They have offered to help the current management committee better understand the licence and talk through event applications before they make them,” he said.

“Of course, council and I would love for the management committee to have as unrestricted a source of income as possible but when we receive formal complaints from local businesses, we have to enforce the licence.”

QFES Champion of Change Award

By Sonia Clark Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade volunteer Helen Jakeman was recently honoured with a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Champion of Change Award.

The award was presented at the 2020 Public Safety and Associated Agencies International Women's Day event hosted by the Queensland Police Service in Brisbane. It recognised the exceptional service of women who work in the Queensland Police, QFES, Corrective Services, the Public Safety Business Agency and the Inspector-General Emergency Management.

Attended by about 750 people, the event centred around the empowering theme of ‘Be brave, Be true, Be you’.

Helen’s nomination was initially put forward by Landsborough brigade treasurer Linda Young.

Linda said that when nominations for the award were called she immediately thought of Helen as a worthy nominee for her “outstanding contribution to embracing gender equality and promoting the rights, interests and wellbeing of women in QFES”.

“Helen lives and breathes the brigade and has been active at the grassroots level since 1993.

She has been instrumental in guiding the culture of the organisation and encourages diversity and inclusion,” Linda said.

“Helen has developed and strengthened relationships within the community, which reflect the important role of women in the Rural Fire Service, and she consistently ensures women are a visible and an equal component in all activities of the brigade.”

The Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade has steadily increased the number of female operational members to about 20% of membership.

“Every successful volunteer Chantelle Garden and organisation Hele n Jakeman depends on a central, committed and dedicated person who possesses a willingness to listen and help others, and Helen is that person.

I’m thrilled that Helen’s tireless commitment has been honoured,” Linda said.

Helen said she was surprised to discover she had been put forward for the award and was even more surprised when she was advised she was a finalist.

Attending the event with brigade member Chantelle Garden, who had been selected to represent QFES North Coast Region, Helen said she had no idea until the day that she would receive the award and was incredibly humbled by the experience.

“It was a wonderful event, and very inspiring to hear the various speakers expand on the theme of being brave, strong and true to yourself. The key message that resonated with me was for women to know what we can do, be brave about it, believe in yourself and be positive – and to ask for help if you need it,” Helen said.

     

Presidents seek partnership on domestic violence

Current thinking is that preventing domestic violence lies in partnerships and communication between women and men, say three Blackall Range service club presidents.

Presidents Val France (Quota), Judith Ross-Smith (Zonta) and Sherryl Gregory (Rotary) met recently to seek ways of partnering with other service clubs and men’s groups across the range to try to make a difference to the escalating problem of domestic violence.

Spokesperson Judith Ross-Smith said that just because this was a beautiful part of the world to live in did not mean we are immune to DV. “In considering some ideas on how we could proceed immediately we decided to invite all the clubs, churches and men’s and women’s organisations to send a representative to a focus meeting to be held in the RSL hall on March 25 to gauge the interest in driving the idea forward, and what we might do that would be effective,” Judith said.

‘We do not want to go it alone with initiatives that we create but to tap into ideas and support we can gather from official government and other specialist organisations that are already working in this field, and bring them to the attention of our community.

“It’s time we started talking with men to find solutions, so we hope our local men’s clubs and men from other service clubs will support our initiative,” Judith said.

Sherryl Gregory said Rotary International had a group called #SayNO2family violence.

“The idea of that group within Rotary International is to give support, advice, facilitation and an early intervention program, so we could get some help from the sorts of activities that group does and the advice they give. It is important we don’t re-invent the wheel,” Sherryl said.

“May is domestic violence prevention month so it would be a significant contribution to that if we could have something to announce then,” she said.

Val France, a lawyer who works in the DV field, has been able to source organisations and groups that support education and outreach.

“Suncoast Cooloola Outreach Prevention and Education (SCOPE) is a local organisation and we could tap into the experience of the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre,” Val said.

“I have discovered a wonderful not-for-profit men’s group called Manhood Australia that is doing extraordinary work here in Maleny in a house donated by a benefactor. Michael Wearing, the founder of the organisation, and his wife have also established a women’s house that is a refuge for women in flight from DV. “Michael is passionate and knowledgeable. Approved by Aboriginal elders he gives seminars and conducts retreats, and he has agreed to speak to us at our focus group meeting,” Val said.

Judith said she was delighted at the amazing progress this group of three had made in a few days, including that Glasshouse Country & Maleny News was happy to partner with them by inserting small ads for free into every paper highlighting the help available to women and men.

“Another idea I would like to implement came from the Zonta District 22 (South East Queensland) initiative of toilet signage in women’s toilets as part of a Zonta Says No program,” Judith said.

“The Zonta Club of Blackall Range rolled out 100 of these signs throughout the range during the 16 days of activism late last year.

“All the businesses we approached were very happy to have us stick them on their women’s toilet doors and many asked why there isn’t one for men?

“So this probably will be the first of the programs we initiate,” Judith said.

While they expect to be able to obtain some grant funds, one idea from the initial meeting was to hold a dinner to present the project to the public and solicit donations to continue what needs to be done.

The word on the street now seems to cover the situation “Violence against women and children is not a women’s problem; it is a community’s problem”, Judith said.

Professor Jennifer Radbourne

Passionate arts advocate, esteemed academic and author Emeritus Professor Jennifer Radbourne was recently acknowledged with the 2020 Creative Award in the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards.

An inaugural member of the Sunshine Coast Arts Advisory Board, the Maleny resident is also chair of the recently established Sunshine Coast Arts Foundation.

GC&M News caught up with Jennifer to find out more about her love of the hinterland, her role as the arts foundation chair and how the hinterland and surrounding communities nurture and contribute a strong component of the arts on the Sunshine Coast.

Q: How long have you lived in the hinterland and what do you love about the region?

A: We purchased our house in Maleny in 2004 as a holiday house then moved here permanently in 2011. I lived in Brisbane most of my life and had always been drawn to Maleny – the landscape, the artistic community, the strong sense of place.

People move here not to escape but to begin – begin a life that is community centred, spiritually refreshing through rolling hills and rainforest trees, and where the arts are part of our culture and creativity. I could not want for a better place to live!

Q: Congratulations on your recent Australia Day creative award. How did it feel to receive this?

A: I was honoured and a little overwhelmed.

I have been involved in the arts in one way or another all my life, from a practising artist (actor

and director) to researching arts audiences and on arts boards, but I guess I have never felt so inspired, so valued as I do here on the Sunshine Coast. There is an acceptance and a pride in who we are. I do what I do in the arts because I love it, and this award was such a surprise.

Q: Tell us about the newly established Sunshine Coast Arts Foundation and your role as chair?

A: In 2016 I was appointed to the Sunshine Coast Arts Advisory Board and one of that board’s objectives, after developing the 20-year arts plan published last year, was to establish an arts foundation. With my interest and experience in governance and in philanthropy and the arts, I was appointed chair of the foundation in July 2019. The first six months have been spent recruiting the board directors, registering the company and the public fund, employing an executive officer, developing a website and policies, and planning for the launch, which was held on February 21.

My role is one of leadership, setting up the governance of the foundation and now delivering on our strategic plan. We have identified specific projects that we believe will interest donors. We are also actively engaging with partner arts organisations, encouraging them to select projects, develop campaigns and find their own donors. We hope that our vision of an enlightened and enriched Sunshine Coast region, transformed by philanthropic investment in arts and culture, will be achieved.

Q: Why do you think it’s important for the hinterland to be represented in the roles you take on?

A: The Sunshine Coast region is diverse in development and ambitious in vision. It is inherently a group of communities, linked by a local government boundary. The hinterland is rich in arts practice and arts participation. Artists choose to live here because of the inspiring landscape and strong sense of community. I am one of these people. I embrace the whole region but I choose to live in Maleny. We have talented writers, potters, painters, printers, actors, directors, musicians, singers and film makers in the hinterland. We enjoy being who we are, in this place. I feel I can be part of the whole region, contributing to policy, planning and practice, but live a full and rewarding life here.

I believe that our part of the Sunshine Coast will be rewarded with a hinterland cultural facility in the near future. It will add to the private galleries and art studios and give new strength to the arts identity of the region.

Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

Shell Beerwah’s winning customer service The team at Shell Beerwah recently returned from the 2020 Viva Energy (Shell) conference, held in Hobart, with two awards including the Dealer Recognition Award for Excellence in Customer Service 2019 and the Gold Retailer of the Year – that’s the big one!

Shell Beerwah’s 2IC Karina Degen, who attended the gala event with general manager Steve Williams and store manager Frances Ross, said it was fantastic to be come home with both these awards and was a great reflection on the team at Shell Beerwah.

Karina was also nominated by her peers for the individual award of Customer Service Champion, and she was a top three finalist.

“I wasn’t disappointed that I didn’t win first place as the store as a whole won the dealer recognition award, which to me is more important than an individual award,” she said.

“We pride ourselves on treating everyone who comes through the door with excellent customer service, and ensuring they have everything they need.”

Store manager Frances said Karina was nominated because she continually went above and beyond. “Although she doesn’t think she does anything special, she absolutely deserves this recognition and we couldn’t be prouder,” Frances said.

Karina, a Beerwah local, has been working at Shell Beerwah for almost four years. She has worked in customer service ever since she could

help in her mum’s salon as a kid. She loves working in the industry and being able to make Beerwah a positive place for locals and travellers.

Later this year, Karina and Frances head to London for the Smiling Stars Conference as one of just two sites nationally to win the Gold Retailer of the Year award.

Golf bridge honours pioneering family A new bridge approaching Maleny Golf Club’s first green has been named the Steve Porter Crossing, forever celebrating an historic link with one of the pioneering families on whose land the golf course now sits.

The Porter family land was combined with the adjacent Armstrong farm to create the 128 hectare Maleny Community Precinct, incorporating the 18-hole golf course.

Club president Jeff Kruse said gaining access to a large portion of Steve Porter’s former dairy farm within the precinct had been absolutely essential to accommodate the 18-hole, par 68 course.

“Steve originally had no intention of selling his farm to the council and took some persuading to agree, so we’ll be forever grateful that he did,” Mr Kruse said.

Getting rid of all the weedy trees, lantana and rocks to convert the Armstrong portion of the precinct to fairways, tees and greens, was an enormous task.

“Steve proved a tireless volunteer during this time with his tractor and slasher to help convert the wilderness into the picturesque golf course we have today,” Mr Kruse said.

Steve, 72, now a keen golfer who usually plays twice a week on the course he helped create, has been humbled by all the fuss and honour of having the bridge linking the two properties named after him.

“As far as I’m concerned the people who should really be getting all the recognition are our

Naming of the Steve Porter Crossing featured as part of the official opening of the final six holes of the golf course by Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson in mid-February.

The course, serviced by a top-drawer maintenance facility, is comprised of two par 5s, ten par 4s and six par 3s featuring unique revetted greenside bunkering, Tiffdwarf Bermuda grass greens and kikuyu fairways within a peaceful, scenic hinterland setting.

World Day of Prayer

The Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church recently hosted the World Day of Prayer in its newly renovated church building.

More than 70 people attended from various Christian denominations in the local area. The theme was ‘Take up your mat and walk’ with the focus on issues faced by women living in Zimbabwe. Following the meeting a morning tea was provided. More than $1,000 was raised to support mothers of children with disabilities in Zimbabwe.

Servicemen’s barbeque The Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch will host the first of its servicemen’s barbeques for the year this Sunday, March 22 at 10.30am.

This is a free event for current and exservicemen, and first responders along with their family and friends.

Enjoy a barbeque and there will be raffles.

Lyndy began her career as a pharmacy assistant at 17. New decade new technology!

The Maleny Show Society is excited to be kicking off 2020 with lots of exciting changes and enhancements to competitor experiences, as well as brand new plans for night time entertainment.

Show Society secretary Lois White said that following the successful trial last year with online registrations for some pavilion categories, this year the society will offer digital registration for all pavilion sections along with dairy cattle and membership.

“We have had the online registration set up for a couple of weeks and it has been great to see that people are starting to use it. Peachester State School has already done up 29 entries for students,” Lois said.

“However, don’t panic if you don’t have internet access as you are still welcome to enter via the general entry form in the printed program.”

Koala crusaders wanted

Australia’s koala population has had a pretty tough time over the past 230 years.

Fur trade hunting (with millions shot, including one million in Queensland alone in a six-month season in 1921), land clearing, dog attacks, car strikes, chlamydia and now bush fires.

Some estimates suggest their numbers may now be as low as 43,000 across the whole country, making any local koala population in the Glasshouse Country and Blackall Range region of particular importance, along with their ever-diminishing habitat.

One Maleny woman is fighting a battle with a weed that she says, if left unchecked, could spell the end of a piece of koala paradise on the outskirts of Maleny.

Jeanette Nobes, an environmental educator and weed warrior, has been fighting an infestation of blue morning glory (Ipomoea indica) that is threatening to take over a eucalypt forest off Kenilworth Road at Witta.

“Many locals don’t know that the range is a last bastion for koalas in the region,” Jeanette said.

“On the southern end there are six main areas where they still survive because there are not as many stressors that they have to battle against.

“One of the threats locally is potential habitat loss due to the invasive vine weed, blue morning glory.”

Blue morning glory hides its sinister side behind large showy blue flowers, which unsuspecting locals may find attractive so they may not be inclined keep it under check.

According to Jeanette, its ability to grow up to a metre a day makes it a formidable threat and a weed that must be controlled, otherwise it can take over in the blink of an eye.

She said the koala habitat on Kenilworth Road near Witta was old growth forest, one of the last remaining along the range, which abuts the main

“We have to save this forest from being impacted by morning glory,” Jeanette said.

She has been undertaking a one-woman morning glory war but it’s now getting beyond her capabilities.

“A small group is now being formed to save this forest. We as a community cannot allow this forest to be lost to something that was totally preventable,” Jeanette said.

“So, if you are fit and have bush care skills (though not necessary), a big heart and don’t mind hard work, and can volunteer a few hours each week, we would love to hear from you.”

Sad loss to the district Beverly Wild OAM passed away on February 18 aged 83 years. Her death has been a great loss for both the Peachester and Woodford communities as Bev made a huge contribution to the district through her work and support for many community organisations.

Bev’s funeral service was held at St Matthias Anglican Church in Woodford, followed by fellowship and lunch at the Peachester Hall.

Bev was born in Indooroopilly in Brisbane in 1936. At the time her parents were dairy farming at The Gap on a property owned by Bev’s maternal grandfather.

During her early life she developed many skills and interests that would be important to her over the years, including helping her parents on the dairy farm and shopkeeping.

When she was 18 she was set up on a blind date by her cousin Wendy. This was when she met Ivan Wild.

Ivan and Bev were married on June 10, 1955 and made their home at the Wild farm - Stanley Hills at Peachester.

Bev loved the farm work and mustering, especially mustering the cows from Running Creek to Stanley Hills and back again between milkings.

As well as the milking and other farm commitments Bev also managed to rear four girls - Dianne, Vivienne, Karen and Sandra - and was proud of her eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Bev and Ivan were members of the Anglican Church at Peachester.

When the church was blown over by a cyclone in 1963 Bev was the treasurer.

Following the loss of the church they joined the Woodford Anglican Church Guild and Bev had been volunteering there since they opened the op shop.

Bev joined the Peachester branch of QCWA in 1955 and was a member when she died. Over the years Bev filled every position within the Peachester branch, as well as holding many positions at divisional level, and was a member of the state knitting and crocheting committee.

She was very proud to be successful at state level competitions with her rich fruit cake, other cakes and slices, and knitted garments. Bev spent many hours cooking in preparation for community catering including for the Beerwah Charity Sports and Melbourne Cup days, and for weddings and funerals.

Bev’s involvement in QCWA led her to becoming a judge at local shows. She was awarded life membership of the Woodford Show Society in recognition of her active involvement with the show since coming to the district, particularly in the horse, handicrafts and cooking sections. For many years Bev also actively participated in these sections at the Kilcoy and Maleny shows.

In 1969, the family became members of the Woodford Pony Club. Bev was the secretary from

1972-1990 and patron for about 30 years. She was made a life member of the club.

She was also actively involved with the Kilcoy Pony Club and enjoyed going to events with her grandchildren. Bev and Ivan were recognised when the Pony Club of Queensland celebrated 50 years in 2009 and they received a commemorative buckle.

Bev and Ivan were members of the Woodford Historical Society since its inception and of the Peachester History Committee.

Not surprisingly in 2014, Bev and Ivan were honoured to be awarded Order of Australia Medals in recognition of their many years of service to the community.

Contributed by Di Hobson With eight months of the Lions Year already gone, we have been very busy in the local community with the highlights including our inaugural welcome dinner in August with almost 100 guests attending. We are looking forward to this year’s event.

In November we worked with the Mooloolah Community Centre and Public Hall and hosted a very successful trivia fundraiser night with $4,520 raised for the drought relief.

In January, with the help of the Mooloolah Country Club, we raised a total of $3,100 in donations for the bushfire appeal.

Earlier this month members participated in Clean Up Australia Day and Lions Awareness Day, which was held at the public hall.

Some of our members are also involved in the proposed men’s shed and we are now involved with the Mooloolah-Eudlo Local Disaster Management Community Sub-Group.

We would love to greet new members who are community minded and want to make a difference in the local area and beyond.

Community Groups Why an open day?

The Blackall Range Woodcrafter’s Guild (BRWG) will hold an open day at its workshop in the Montville Sports Ground this Saturday, March 21.

If you are wondering why the club is holding an open day in March it is because they have too much wood.

The guild relies on community donations of trees that are unwanted and would normally be mulched, resulting in good timber being wasted.

The generous support of the community in donating trees whenever one has to come down or is blown over has resulted in a stock of sawn wood in excess of the needs of club members.

Salvaging this resource is a win-win situation as it saves landowners the cost of mulching and provides BRWG with a valuable resource for members’ woodcraft.

This wood is converted into woodcraft of real value and also goes towards BRWG’s work for the community such as the bench seats at the Maleny hospital and St Mary’s Church in Montville.

The solution to the surplus is to offer timber stocks to the public, at reasonable prices, via an

Species on offer include southern silky oak, liquid amber, camphor laurel, bunya pine, some blue gum and tallowwood.

The open day is also an opportunity to show the community the BRWG facilities with demonstrations in woodturning, pyrography, scroll-saw cutting, carving and milling operations.

There will be woodcraft, second-hand surplus tools and, of course, milled timber for sale. Tea and coffee with a sausage sizzle and burger stand will be available as well.

Doors will open at 8am and close at 1pm.

Everyone is welcome.

It’s not long until the sixth annual welcome to the hinterland dinner, which the Lions Club of Blackall Range would like all new residents of Montville, Hunchy, Flaxton, Mapleton and surrounds to come along to at Flaxton Gardens on the evening of Wednesday, April 22.

“It’s a nice night out with great food and presentations from local community groups,” the club’s liaison officer Peter Jensen said. “It’s a great way to get connected in the community, meet other locals and make new friends.”

The evening starts at 6pm for 7pm dinner and includes canapés, a two-course meal with two choices of mains and a tasty selection of small desserts. Gluten free options are available, and other dietary needs can be accommodated.

Striving for local housing solutions Glass Housing 55 is a small community group seeking people interested in being involved in a project aimed at creating local solutions for women aged over 55 experiencing housing distress in Glasshouse Country.

The group’s mission is to explore and develop strategies to seek long-term, affordable, local housing solutions for women over 55 across Glasshouse Country.

Some particular skills most helpful for the group

include grant writing, fundraising, navigating building processes and financial management.

The Zonta Club of Blackall Range hosted its fifth Dusk on the Deck at the Maleny Community Centre recently. The annual event celebrates International Women’s Day and Zonta International Rose Day. Lynda Burgess was announced as the Zonta Woman of Achievement.

You Said It Clean Up Australia 2020

That time of year again, beginning of March, when everybody puts on their gloves and sunscreen and walks the streets to pick up rubbish.

Our clean-up site at Bells Creek Road and Roys Road was issued with a huge bin and we managed to have it overflowing with more rubbish beside it.

We collected dishwashers, mattresses, television sets, furniture, tyres, car parts, fencing materials and heaps of household rubbish including sheets of tin and tiles.

Our group of volunteers did a fantastic job through mud, sticky, hot, humid weather and insects, picking up rubbish in very poor conditions.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated.

Without your continued help this event would not happen. We even had volunteers from Nambour and Maroochydore this year and their help was very much appreciated.

A very big thank you to our sponsors, namely McDonald’s Glass House Mountains for providing cheeseburgers, Fresh & Save for providing water and soft drinks, Bakers Packaging who thankfully supplied sturdy gloves and, lastly, to Daleys Turf who every year have supplied vehicles for this event.

Costings need scrutiny

We hear a lot about the high cost of electricity from the LNP, especially in Queensland.

The Morrison Coalition has granted $4 million (of taxpayers’ money) to study a coal-fired power station at Collinsville, though there have already been studies by the Minerals Council of Australia, Townsville Enterprise Ltd and the Australian Energy Council.

For that proposed new plant to be viable, the cost of its power would be $120 a megawatt hour. This is double the price the power stations currently receive for electricity and will entrench higher consumer electricity prices for the life of the asset.

We consumers will be subsidising it. The LNP knows this and they still want to spend $4 million on a study. As if that is more pressing than housing, public transport, farming and small businesses.

While they are dismissing the warming climate, rising ocean levels, uninsurable houses, high costs of emergencies, loss of crops and effects on health, they have only one response: “we can’t do anything about emissions because this will lead to loss of jobs and prosperity”.

Their only line is to attack Labor’s net zero emissions by 2050 with a demand to know the cost. It’s the LNP’s costings that need scrutiny.

World Day of Prayer

A sincere thank you to the 75 people who attended the World Day of Prayer service held in the Seventhday Adventist (SDA) church on Friday, March 6.

Emma, who came to Australia from Zimbabwe, was able to give a first-hand view of the situation in her former country, which like many countries is suffering numerous problems.

After the uplifting service all enjoyed fellowship over a cuppa and a delicious array of food presented by the ladies of the SDA church.

The wonderful generosity of the people attending resulted in $1,071.41 being offered up to help towards resolving some of the hardships being experienced in Zimbabwe. We pray many will be able to ‘Rise, take your mat and walk’.

Council election

Thanks to GC&M News for publishing such a comprehensive spreadsheet of all the candidates for the Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council elections.

It’s obvious to me that Winston Johnston is the pick of them all, as he seems to have thoroughly surveyed the needs of the electorate and is the most experienced person to represent us.

He should also include, as a priority, a representation to the Department of Transport and Main Roads to urge them to upgrade the main road through Maleny.

The dangerous hold-ups occurring in front of the state primary school twice every school day is completely unnecessary. For heaven’s sake, there is a large tree in the middle of the left-hand lane, blocking any chance of a smooth flow! This effectively prevents a turn-right lane for high school traffic to use.

A turn right lane for west bound vehicles turning into the road that takes you to Gardners Falls would prevent the numerous near misses that occur every day when tourists make a last minute decision to turn at the sign to one of the most popular spots in the area.

His help to fix these glaringly obvious issues is needed because it seems the state representative and the outgoing councillor have not been able to do anything to lobby for these improvements in the past.

Having managed to put the lights out throughout the house and trying, without any success, several electricians (being a Friday and most booked up) I was looking at the prospect of being in the dark till Monday. Division 1 capital works

In a feature in last week’s GC&M News, the Division 1 Greens candidate claimed that only 3.75% of council’s capital budget gets spent in Division 1. I’m not sure where that figure comes from and it doesn’t make sense. The closest I can get is by adding up all of the Division 1 highlights on council’s website, which come to 4.13% of the capital works budget.

But if you do that for other divisions, it is clear that is actually a good number. For example, in our neighbouring divisions Division 5’s highlights are only 0.91% of the budget and Division 2’s highlights are 2.96%. Based on those numbers, Division 1

actually has the third highest capital spend of all the divisions in the council!

However, there are many other parts to the capital budget not accounted for in the divisional highlights.

For example, all the numbers look small because a large portion of council’s capital budget is allocated to a few major projects, especially the airport upgrade. That funding can’t be compared with ordinary capital works because those projects bring in income for council (and therefore the ratepayers) that offsets the cost. For example, we will receive an initial payment of $290 million from the group that will run the upgraded airport, and ongoing payments after that. That means that spending on the airport is an investment, not pure expenditure.

Of course, I will always fight to get more infrastructure spending in Division 1 and there is a lot more work to do, but we are making progress.

Re: Longer swimming season

In response to Frances Harper’s letter (GC&M News, March 11), in 2013 council officers advised council that the estimated cost of fully enclosing the Maleny pool was $429,000-$564,000.

In November 2018, officers advised council that the estimated cost of an alternative aquatic centre on a Precinct site leased to the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club would be $12.5-$15 million, including $1.3 million for road access, power and water.

Council officers accordingly declined to make a recommendation about the project, although they did make a recommendation, which council endorsed, to facilitate community access to the existing pool.

Despite the absence of an officer recommendation, council also endorsed the Precinct project.

Queensland councils are expected to consider the recommendations of council officers before they endorse (or decline) a proposal.

Unlike lobbyists, council officers are bound by law to fairness and impartiality, creating a safeguard.

It says much about the current mayor and councillors that they should endorse an unfunded, multi-million dollar project on community land in defiance of the safeguard.

The effect of these decisions is that the existing pool has become something of a lost cause while the aquatic centre has languished due to its complexity and insuperable cost. Recently it was scaled back to a hydrotherapy pool for which a serviced site with decent access exists in town, for free.

Council elections

Division 5 is not only geographically the largest division but also the most diverse. Fortunately our retiring councillor Jenny McKay knew her community well and worked tirelessly to support positive changes.

In the upcoming election, candidates claim to be ‘independent’ except for Tracy Burton, who is proudly Greens.

While Sunshine Coast Council maintains there are no political parties in council, those who have lived here long enough and pay attention know this to be totally false!

While many past and present councillors have an affiliation with political parties, some do not use that to colour their decisions or engagement, representing fairly all community members.

We have been lucky with Jenny McKay but I now worry that fair-minded balance will be lost.

At least four of the current candidates are active participants in local conservative politics and their

comments clearly support the right-wing doctrine of the federal government by dismissing climate change as not caused by humans, and don’t consider fossil fuels to be a threat!

Other candidates find it difficult to accept scientific evidence and the need for a climate crisis to be declared.

For a community passionate about maintaining the iconic environment we have protected and created, there are two candidates to consider.

Tracy Burton who is supported by the Greens, a political party whose credentials are known and declared, is passionate about the sustainability of our environment.

My research found Greg Cutlack to be a widely respected, ethical and honest member of the Eudlo community. Perhaps the only true ‘independent’; he is described by those who know him as a “natural leader”, and now is a time for leaders with integrity and honesty.

With a field of ten candidates the final result will come down to preferences. Candidates with aligned doctrines are likely to swap preferences and it is entirely likely that the winner of the most primary votes will not win the seat.

Last Wednesday night I attended the forum with the council candidates at the Coffee Club regarding the proposed Coles/Bunnings development earmarked for Roys Road at Beerwah.

I am the owner and operator of All In One Fitness Centre in Beerwah and Mooloolah. I have been in business coming up to five years and have lived on the Sunshine Coast for 11 years.

Previously I have worked at both Coles and Woolworths for a combined total of 27 years. For more than 20 of those years I was in management roles at stores in both Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

One of the issues raised at the forum was why would Coles/Bunnings want to develop in that specific location and not somewhere else?

Coles/Bunnings, and even Woolworths for that matter, will always try to build in prime locations where they will get the most passing traffic and visibility exposure. It is not uncommon for Coles or Woolworths to build in a location before housing and other development has happened to keep others out.

Another question asked was why don’t they build on Simpson Street as there are so many empty

shops, which I found really disappointing. Business owners on Simpson Street are hard working and very supportive of the community, community events and fundraising events.

As for the empty shops on Simpson Street, the biggest hurdle for small business comes from some of our landlords’ higher rents, which increase 4-5% each year - even though 2019 CPI was only 1.8%.

Another reason is that this would destroy Beerwah’s country town feel, which we should be so proud of.

To think we should let a company come into Beerwah and redevelop the shops and old buildings on Simpson Street would be a sad day.

Whichever way we look at it we are going to have change and progress for Beerwah. Let’s just hope it doesn’t lose it character and country feel.

Division 1 needs good planning

There is not long to go until we all decide who will represent the people of Division 1.

As you would expect, each area has some growing pains with new development under way or at least planned.

Locals want to have a say in how we can come to the best result, then have it explained.

With thanks to each of the groups I’ve met with, I have a long list to begin working on if you allow me the privilege to represent you.

Resources such as the volunteer community groups and chambers of commerce are gold when it comes to how each township sees itself and how they can handle the expected growth into the future.

The expectation now is that we should consolidate CBDs, Beerwah being a prime example. Planning must be for Beerwah to be a destination for the southern part of the growing coast and as the gateway to the Sunshine Coast.

This will lead to a more vibrant CBD and, in turn, more jobs.

There is still work to do with the Landsborough overpass and stronger partnerships in the planning stages of new developments to incorporate wider roads and CCTV. Planned well, we will not have our quality lifestyles impacted.

The incorporation of two female change rooms at each sporting ground - new, planned and retrofitted - is also necessary for the development of women’s sport.

While these are a few specific and small ticket items, they are raised often enough to be pursued into the future.

Local government impacts our lives more than state and federal. I would use my experience of having served two terms as a councillor and 20 years with our family business to strengthen partnerships in the community and with state and federal governments.

Re: Full-time coordinator role

Cr Rick Baberowski outlined his goal of securing a full-time coordinator to organise events in Glasshouse Country in the March 11 edition of GC&M News.

We are delighted that after all our years of lobbying, in this election year we now have a commitment from the incumbent councillor to secure a full-time coordinator to run events in Glasshouse Country.

Celebrate Glasshouse Country Inc is a volunteer group working to support community, business and tourism.

Our volunteers have undertaken a huge workload over the past five years to run the street parties in Beerwah in 2015, 2017 and 2019. As well as publishing the book ‘The Heritage Listed Glasshouse Mountains’, we created and distribute the Welcome to Glasshouse Country banners and marquees.

We have also produced the videos promoting the mountains and region, which you can see by checking the link on our Facebook page.

This year we continue to support community groups by hosting more skills workshops and opportunities to network.

We are also working with the chamber of commerce on a three-year plan to light up Simpson Street at night, enabling safe social gatherings and a festive atmosphere.

For five years we sought funding for a full-time project officer to boost and support our community.

In talks with Cr Baberowski over this time we were told that council won’t fund the position. Last year we paid a modest amount to a coordinator but it needs a team committed to the task.

We recently wrote to council asking if they would run the street party with our support as the task is onerous for our volunteers. The answer was no, as council does not have the capacity for this. They steered us in the direction of grant sites to obtain funds. This is great but not a sustainable option year after year.

Something must have changed to make this proposal for a coordinator possible.

In this election, you will be asked to vote for the mayor and for a councillor in the division where you live (locally, that’s either division 1 or division 5).

You will be asked to use the optional preferential voting system, where you either vote for one candidate, vote for some candidates or vote for all candidates.

You need to use a numbering system to show the order of preference for your votes.

It will be simply explained at the polling booth.

When you arrive, you will most likely be greeted by supporters of candidates who will politely offer you a how-to-vote card for their preferred candidate.

Please show them courtesy and politeness as they are generally friends or family of the candidates (or the candidates themselves) and are volunteering their time.

If you feel intimidated by anyone at the polling booth, report that to an electoral official and they will deal with the situation.

Beerwah pre-polling Voting is an important part of our democratic rights and freedoms. Many places around the world have fought – and are still fighting – for the right to live in a democracy, so please treat the act with due respect.

Make sure you fill out your ballot forms accurately.

Disfiguring or writing comments on the ballot paper you may think humorous or to make you feel powerful is, in reality, a waste of your time and a wasted vote. Ballot papers are never seen by the candidates or anyone other than the person who checks and counts the ballots.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland are advising people who plan to pre-poll to bring their own pen or pencil with them.

Crazy hair, don’t care!

Peachester State School students and staff were among the 20,000 extraordinary Aussies who helped raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World Greatest Shave last week.

The students and staff coloured and waxed their hair, with students donating money towards research into blood cancer.

Some year 6 students conducted research into leukaemia, with school captain Ellie Jennings explaining that blood cancers were the most frequently diagnosed cancers in Australia.

“Right now there are more than 110,000 Australians living with a blood-related cancer. We are helping fund research to help those people and their families,” Ellie said.

Beerwah State School students from prep to year 5 were entertained and captivated by the Aunty Peach Show recently.

The performance is based on Roald Dahl’s popular and very funny twisted fairy tales, ‘Revolting Rhymes’.

Along with the interactive, vibrant story-telling and startling magic tricks, the students were given many useful, practical tips that benefitted their future drama performances and classroom presentations.

This was a truly memorable and valuable experience for students.

The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range recently held its annual Youth of the Year judging at The Orangery Maleny. Diners listened to two inspiring entrants answer two impromptu questions in two minutes per question put to them by the judging panel, as well as presenting prepared five-minute speeches.

Sarah Hindle, one of Maleny State High School’s captains, was the overall winner after interviews were held at Maleny RSL the previous weekend. Seventy points were allocated for personality and commitment to their school and scholastic results, but more importantly to their commitment to their community expressed during that interview.

Tricia Jackson, wife of the late Roger Jackson after whom the bursary is named, presented Sarah with her $1,000 cheque. Igor Ejmont, the public speaking winner, received a bursary for $200. The bursaries are to be used for the student’s self-improvement.

Sarah will progress to the next level of judging in the national Lions Australia project later in the month in Mapleton.

Get a head start on university

Year 11 and 12 students can experience what it’s like to learn at university and get a head start on their tertiary studies with the opportunity to study at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) while completing their senior years of schooling. USC’s Headstart Program allows students to choose from a range of subjects to learn and experience what it’s like to study at a tertiary level.

USC Sippy Downs is hosting an information session this Thursday, March 19 from 4.30–6pm, which will take students through everything they need to know about the program, from choosing the right subjects to tips for balancing Headstart and current school studies.

USC schools relationship officer Kirsty Jarrett said the free event would include a tour of the Sippy Downs campus and talks for school students and their parents from USC Sunshine Coast staff and students, including current Headstart Program students.

“High school students can choose from more than 100 first year subjects, which will give them credit towards their Queensland Certificate of Education while working towards a degree,” Kirsty said. “There is no tuition fee for the first subject.”

From the churches Renovations for change and renewal Contributed by Charles Russell The Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church recently invited the community to join its members in celebrating the completion of their newly renovated church building.

Renovations included increasing seating capacity, modernising the facilities, adding extra rooms, providing additional car parking and adding extensive landscaping.

The church was full with members, visitors and guests from various community organisations attending, as well as Cr Rick Baberowski who encouraged the church to continue its important work in the community.

Guests were treated to some uplifting music by For His Glory singers, a reminder of the church’s journey in Landsborough to the present day by Pastor Laurie Evans and a challenge to use the facility as a safe

and welcoming place for all people.

A special presentation was made to the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church for the use of their facility while the renovations were being completed.

The builder, Mark Freyling, was also presented with a gift of appreciation for helping to bring the building work to completion. Celebrations concluded with a community buffet lunch in the church hall.

The renovations are the completion of stage one of a longer term project that includes the building of a community centre on the vacant property adjoining the church.

Pastor Laurie said renovations remind us of how God can work in our personal lives to change our old ways and renew us to be people who care for others around us.

Updated figures show that in 2020 the estimated number of Australians living with dementia has increased to 459,000. Without a medical breakthrough the number of Australians with dementia is expected to be more than one million by 2058.

Out&About Donna Munro exhibition

Film festival at Maleny The Maleny Film Society proudly hosted its 25th Australian Film Festival last weekend at the Maleny Community Centre. A launch party was held on Friday evening in the verandah room, with the state Member for Glass House Andrew Powell officially opening the event. He acknowledged the amazing dedication of the many volunteers who have contributed to the event over its long history and the importance at this time of focussing on the creative talent of our own Australian film industry.

Vianta Arts recently hosted another great exhibition opening for Donna Munro’s Beyond the Surface exhibition.

Exhibition curator Ilia Starkovsky said a great atmosphere was complemented with live music by jazz guitarist Glen Knox on the night.

The Farewell

‘The Farewell’ highlights the cultural and societal similarities and differences between the West and China.

Members of a scattered but loving Chinese family come together to see the family's matriarch before she dies. As she is the only one who doesn't realise her time is limited, the family organises a contrived wedding as a pretext to have a celebratory time with the grandmother.

Not surprisingly, things don't always go according to plan, so what ensues is both comedy and drama.

‘The Farewell’ is at once heart warming and tragic, allowing the family members to reveal themselves in new ways, at times deepening long-held opinions and rethinking perceived relationships. It is written and directed by young

In the Garden Mushroom magic

I went to a mushroom growing talk at the Maleny Library last weekend. It was put on by Mountaintop Mushrooms, our own gourmet mushroom grower based in Maleny.

It was a great morning as it reopened my eyes to the amazing – and sometimes weird – world of mushrooms and fungi. Big thanks to Kat and Dan for their time and energy.

Mushrooms and fungi in the garden are generally looked upon as problems or indicators of disease.

However, in reality fungi are life-givers to your garden, for without them many soil organisms and plants would not be able to survive and thrive in our gardens.

This ranges from breaking down organic matter and releasing it into the soil for other plants to utilise, to working with the roots of plants (such as banksias) to make nutrients available to both in a symbiotic relationship.

Most of the action isn’t to do with the mushrooms we see above the ground.

Living on the hedge

These – as Kat so wonderfully described – are the apples on the tree. The tree is the amazing network of mycelium (the white strands seen in mulch or soil) below the surface, which is the real body of the fungus.

So the mushrooms are just show-off fruiting bodies while the real magic of mushrooms happens underground.

Did you know that there is a massive single fungus organism in Oregon in the USA that is a couple of square kilometres in size and estimated to be more than 2,400 years old.

And I didn’t know that for our bodies to best utilise the mushrooms we eat, they need to be cooked (or at least heated) first, otherwise our intestinal systems can’t break down the cell walls of the mushrooms.

At the talk we learnt how Kat and Dan grow oyster mushrooms and even got to take home our own oyster mushroom growing kit.

All going well, I’ll have a nice crop of oyster mushrooms in a week or so. Anyone got a favourite recipe?

Hedges are a useful and attractive way of defining boundaries, providing privacy and scenic amenity, and great for the wildlife. What we tend to think of as a traditional hedge is a planting of the same tough, readily pruned, bushy to the ground species that is basically a living fence and not much more than that. However, this is a relatively recent invention of our production-line landscaping. The hedges of old contained a diverse range of species and resources for both humans and wildlife. Some of the great local plants for creating hedges include most of our lilly pillies and myrtles such as the common lilly pilly (Acmena smithii), blue lilly pilly (Syzygium oleosum), scrub cherry (Syzygium australe - dwarf forms), silky myrtle (Decaspermum humile), dotted myrtle (Gossia punctata), plum myrtle (Pilidiostigma glabrum) and grey myrtle (Backhousia myrtifolia). However, there are so many more including common aspen (Acronychia oblongifolia), muttonwood (Myrsine variabilis), white alder (Callicoma serratifolia), blueberry ash (Elaeocarpus reticulatus), velvet leaf (Callicarpa pedunculata) and bottlebrushes (Callistemon sp.) … just for starters. Hedge plants are great for you and the environment, so don’t beat around the bush and get hedging.

The Friends are hosting two discovery walks at the Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens (Palm Creek Road, Tanawha), focussing on the wonderful world of gum trees.

Walk one starts at 10am and is based on the theme ‘Eucalypts: What are they? Which is which?’ It covers how eucalypts were discovered, to how to identify some local species.

Walk two starts at 1pm and covers ‘Eucalypts - evolution and ecology’. This looks at the natural history of eucalypts and their role in our landscape.

Sport Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover A combination of sunshine, rain and some good bowls was the order of the day at Maleny Bowls Club (MBC) last week. This has become the pattern. Rain washed out our Tuesday morning bowls.

Wednesday saw a team from MBC travel to Kilcoy for a great day of bowls. A win and a loss for the day was a good result against such quality opposition. It was good to see new members join the visiting crew. Well done John Williams, now becoming a regular, and Dave Edwards, who do a good job for our team.

Wednesday night saw some absences but for those teams who had their full complement, well done. At this stage of the competition the Outlaws

have had some good results and could be the favourites.

Tony Yorkston has his crew doing well on the green as well as behind the barbeque.

Paul Kemp is hopeful that his form will be good enough to carry the bridge club along while the regulars are absent.

Friday saw some showers and some good bowls not necessarily in that repeated pattern. Miles Allen put himself under pressure in holding off any cancellations because of impending showers.

Well done folks - your determination and perseverance is to be commended. All were very understanding and it was appreciated. All bowlers are welcome at any of the events held at the club.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley An enjoyable day of tennis was had by all with Witta Wagtails winning only two sets and the hosts, Nambas Champers, coming away winners. The Wagtails are now looking forward to a rematch on home turf. Thanks to Cynthia Garvie, Jan Maguire, Sheryn Golledge and Sonia Douglas.

Whistlers played at Mooloolaba against the Legends. The rain stayed away and we got to play all the sets. We struggled with occasional wind, which kept the rallies going and lots of deuces. It was good tennis but we were one game short. Score was 35-36 games, four sets all. The team was Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper and thanks Sue Rheinberger for filling in.

We won on the day after only 3½ sets. At that stage we were ahead by one game, so it would have been close. The team was Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Jenie Riding and Sonia Douglas.

Two composite teams of varying alliances consisting loosely of Sally Adams, Helen Andrews, Bev Sockhill, Helen Uhlmann and Janelle Wilson had a lot of fun playing association and recorded a score of 7-4. Len Baker, Helen Uhlmann and Jan Trendle were at the coaching session on Saturday morning, March 7. Helen and Jan played a three-way golf croquet game with Bev while Len received individual coaching from Vince Carbery.

All beginning players should seize the opportunity to play in the Sunshine Coast division four tournament to be held at Maleny on April 8-9.

This is a great chance to play against other clubs without travelling. Vince or any of our more experienced players would be happy to help with entry.

Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm for 2.30pm.
