Local artist takes on Archibald challenge Sunshine Coast artist Darren Trebilco has been receiving accolades for this year’s Archibald Portrait Prize entry from those who have been visiting his studio to view the piece as it has taken shape.

Owner of the Solitude Art Gallery / Open Studio in Glenview, Darren says that some avid visitors have been dropping in weekly, to see the progress and direction he has taken on his portrait of ‘Hat Fitz’, the Australian wild man of blues.

Darren’s portrait sitter for this year’s Archibald, ‘Hat Fitz’, “has the face of a weathered, bearded mountain man and the personality of an Aussie larrikin”, and Darren was excited by the idea of creating such an intriguing face in paint.

With the piece standing at 1.8 metres tall by 1.5 metres wide, Darren chose to steer away from the traditional canvas surface, opting instead for a wide frame covered in timber and wallpaper.

Darren’s latest artwork is a combination of techniques that the professional artist has been developing and honing throughout his career.

With the colour, quality and vibrancy that the Sunshine Coast has come to expect from Trebilco artwork, each piece offers an energy of originality and strength.

Solar users targeted

New foundation formed

Recently, Energy Minister Mark McArdle introduced changes to the way the electricity market operates, which will see (among other things) the scrapping of the guaranteed 8c solar feed-in tariff.

The changes were made in a bid to lower power bills for electricity users, due to what Mr McArdle calls a “cross subsidy” where non-solar households are paying for the feed-in tariff.

Queensland Treasurer Tim Nicholls has gone further, describing those who took part in the original solar scheme as "champagne sippers and the latte set", while labelling the program "middle class welfare".

From July 1, solar power users will have to individually negotiate with their retailer to agree on a price for the energy they produce and feed back into the grid.

To make matters worse, the average Queensland home on a regulated electricity tariff will see its power bills increase by around 13% for the financially year 2014-2015, or $191 annually, according to the Queensland Competition Authority’s (QCA), which are on top of a 21% rise last financial year.

Industry figures show that the uptake of solar power by Queensland households trying to escape escalating power bills, continues to grow, with 3,687 systems installed in May – totaling 16.2MW of electricity being generated.

According to Ian Hall from All Energy H.Q. (previously 1300 4 SOLAR) right now is the critical time to join one of those 3,687

households and sign up for solar power.

“Energex have other changes planned and from July 1 they will only be giving people the opportunity to be considered for a system up to 3kW – as opposed to the current limit of 5kW,” Ian said.

“It is also my understanding that the 5kW system doesn’t have to installed by July 1, just that the application has been made – which is how the process has always operated,” he said.

After July 1, you are still able to have systems installed larger than 3kW, but they will not be allowed to feed into the electricity grid.

“My understanding is that they will be trying to limit the amount of electricity that is being fed back into the grid, which makes it even more important that you look at on-site battery storage to make sure you are utilising the entire capacity of your system,” said Ian. The State Government are also looking to introduce legislation which will remove retail price regulation, meaning that market forces will set the price paid and energy consumers will need to shop around for the best deals.

The Wiruungga Foundation has been formed to encourage indigenous and other Australians to develop self-reliance: spiritually, physically, socially and economically.

The foundation’s aim is to purchase or lease bush-land acreage suitable for creating an environment for the retention of traditions including bush medicines, bush foods, art and craft, music and dance.

They also aim to establish working models for the growing of bush tucker, native plants used for the production of traditional medicines, and fresh vegetables, and establish a learning centre.

Here students will be taught with love and compassion to achieve their academic goals and the values of traditional culture, and as a result, their horizons will be broadened and their aspirations lifted.

Positive Continence Health available at Landsborough Chemist As part of their commitment to raising public awareness about health issues that may be of benefit to their customers, Landsborough Chemist are planning to hold a pharmacy health promotion to highlight World Continence Week (WCW) which runs from June 23 - 29.

As part of their promotion, the pharmacy will be seeking to educate customers about continence health as well as offering a free screening questionnaire to assist and identify customers who may need further attention.

The pharmacy will also be offering professional advice during the week, and if required, referrals to appropriate medical practitioners.

Supported by the Continence Foundation of Australia, this year’s WCW highlights issues surrounding maternal continence, though continence health, which centres on a strong pelvic floor, is applicable to everyone regardless of age or gender. The key message for everyone is that incontinence in most cases can be preventable and is treatable.

With this in mind, the Landsborough Chemist will be urging customers both male and female to fill out the quick screening questionnaire.

Should it return a positive result, then book an appointment with one of two specialist physiotherapists who will be visiting the pharmacy during WCW for further discussion.

The health promotion seeks to raise awareness, educate and then bring to people’s attention that good solutions do exist.

During the week, there will be an education booth set up inside the Pharmacy along with a video display that will provide further information for customers. Friendly staff will be on hand to happily answer any questions.

Studies suggest that one in three women who have had babies may experience continence issues so this year the focus of World Continence Week has the tag phrase ‘Managing the Mother Load’.

This new campaign by the Continence Foundation of Australia seeks to raise awareness particularly among women, of the need to do pelvic floor muscle exercises several times a day, ideally during and after pregnancy.

Clinical studies have showed pelvic floor muscle exercises could prevent and effectively treat pre and postnatal women if performed correctly as part of a daily routine. In conjunction with the Managing the Mother Load campaign, which will be officially launched during World Continence Week, the Continence Foundation of Australia has developed a pregnancy guidebook and smart phone app.

Glasshouse Mountains Touch Football Association is holding their inaugural ‘Touch on Glass’ competition from 9.00am on Sunday, June 22.

The competition will involve Sunshine Coast, State and International players in open mixed teams from touch football affiliates from throughout the Sunshine Coast and Queensland, with three local Glasshouse teams. The competition will see 10 teams playing 30 games in a round-robin and finals.

Peter Farrell of Glass House Mountains is one of a group of veterans from the Sunshine Coast Vietnam Veterans Association who have been undertaking a fishing trip for many years.

The vessel they go out on is ‘Nightbeat’, an old trawler converted to cater for a group, it’s a live

aboard, with accommodation for eight anglers and two crew and is based at Tin Can Bay. This year the fellas left Tin Can Bay for three days fishing during the first week of June.

They all have wager on who catches the largest edible fish, plus there is a trophy for the largest snapper.

Apparently the sledging throughout the trip is worse than anything heard on a cricket pitch.

If anyone looked like having a larger fish than a colleague, they needed eyes in the back of their heads as one of the others may try to assist their chances by cutting their competitors line!

If you’re considering a party in the future, and intend to have a large gathering to celebrate, then you must consider the laws in relation to an event.

What is an out-of-control event?

The event must involve a gathering of at least 12 people, with at least three engaging in out-of-control conduct. Out-of-control conduct includes things like trespassing, damaging property, disorderly conduct, fighting, doing obscene acts, making unreasonably noise, throwing objects to harm people, obstructing traffic, being drunk in a public place, minors consuming or possessing alcohol in a public place or breaking glass.

What can police do about it?

Once an event authorisation has been given in relation to an event, officers can utilise the out-of-control event powers granted under the legislation.

The out-of-control event powers can be used by a police officer for any one or more of the following purposes: preventing the event becoming an out-of-control event; stopping an out-of-control event from continuing or starting in another location; dispersing persons from the event; minimising the impact of the event on public order or safety; identifying a person organising or committing a relevant offence at the event.

Police can stop a vehicle or enter a place. Police can give a person, or a group of persons, a direction to stop any conduct to immediately leave a place; or not return to a place within a stated period of not more than 24 hours (unless the person or group resides at the place); and police can take any other steps the police officer considers reasonably necessary.

Police can give directions and if you fail to comply with this direction you will be committing an offence which you may be arrested for.

Please remember if you’re planning an event you must take into account these laws. There are party safe registrations and wrist bands and information booklets at the police station. You can also download these forms on the QPS web page and submit the forms online.

Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre received a brand new garden shed on a cement slab which was kindly donated by the Masonic Lodge of Landsborough.

This shed was installed by some of the members of the Lodge with the assistance of participants in BADYAC's programs.

It will help contribute to the further development of their veggie gardens, which they would like the community to become a part of.

Whilst the team at BADYAC are really appreciative of the continued support of the Masonic Lodge, they still need the support of local business, and the community, to complete their community garden.

They are looking to create an environment that nurtures learning about home grown vegetables

and their nutritional value, creates new friendships, swapping skills and knowledge, and where you can have a cuppa and chat while tending the gardens.

Can you help put some tools in their shed, some fertiliser, soil, compost bins, irrigation equipment, maybe even a small rainwater tank? These would all be utilised to help build up their gardens and encourage our young people to learn how to become self sufficient in our tough society.

If you would like to help out they are planning a ‘Garden Day’ on Wednesday, June 18 from 2.00pm. Come along and have a cuppa and get involved.

Beerburrum State School Students from Prep through to Year 7 have been busy preparing for the school’s Family Fun Day on Saturday, June 21.

During art classes students have all been hard at work creating their very own canvas master piece.

Each class has a different theme – Funky Forest, At the Beach, Flowers close up, Under the Sea, Owls in the night, Down at the Zoo, as well as some Ned Kelly inspired works.

It has been amazing to see how creative the students have been!

We certainly have a few very talented artists in our midst. All of these fantastic pieces of art will be on

display at the Family Fun Day and will be for sale ranging in price up to $10.00.

Since the new management has taken over Guppy’s Early Learning Centre at Beerwah, they have been making improvements to the physical environment, community involvement and integrated new programs within the centre. One of these integrated programs is conducting regular yoga classes with the children.

We have created a space in the learning environment with peaceful music, ornaments and inspirational images and yoga mats to encourage relaxation amongst the centre.

The yoga classes are held in the centre three times per week and the children have really taken to the learning experience. Centre Director, Mellissa Dimauita, describes the integrated program as providing exceptional child care through personalised service, meaning that all of our children have the opportunity to be involved in a comforting learning environment, catering for their individual needs.

The owners of Toothkind are excited to announce the upcoming opening of their newest practice in Beerwah on June 23. Following on the success of their two other Toothkind clinics located in Brisbane’s Northside, Drs James Fox and Chris Milligan look forward to bringing their modern dentistry practice to what they envisage is a growing town with great opportunities.

Obstacles or opportunities

When you step back and have a look at what is going on in Glasshouse Country you may think all is well, with new housing developments in Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains and Beerwah, and the streetscaping and new shopping centre in Beerwah. There are new businesses coming into the area and others relocating to try to improve their exposure to the market.

There are also businesses moving south in a search for new customers.

What does all this activity say about small businesses in Glasshouse Country?

On the other hand, there are other activities being restricted from attracting customers by the barrier of Red Tape. These service providers attract customers into town where they spend their dollars and leave with a smile on their face and are happy to tell their friends about the beauty and hospitality of Glasshouse Country. The market I am referring to is the RV traveller (caravan, motorhome, camper trailers or just a tent). The State Government introduced the Drive Tourism Strategy a few months ago, and to date, Sunshine Coast Council has done little to accommodate this market in Glasshouse Country.

The simple one is the self-contained RV traveller that drives into town, look at where they can park, enjoy what is on offer, spend up to $100.00 a day in a RV Friendly community and move on. If they are not welcome they will go to another community and patronise those businesses.

The closure of the Beerwah Recreation and Showground Reserve at the end of April is one such example of a community providing a service since the 1980’s, with the infrastructure funded by Caloundra City, with the intention to attract this RV market. The consequences of this closure with no solution in place has had a significant impact on the cash flow of chamber members in Beerwah, although meetings were held in February, with an agreed seamless solution to go in place. The chamber has written to council requesting the facility be reopened to the RV travellers as a matter of urgency.

Business Buzz with Sonia Clark Cup cake for Lenny

Many people throughout the community were shocked to hear of the unfortunate traffic incident that occurred over the Easter weekend earlier this year that sadly resulted in the amputation of Senior Constable Len Elliott’s right leg. Buck’s Bakery at Landsborough have thrown their support behind a campaign to raise funds to assist with the ongoing costs associated with SC Lenny Elliott’s long road to recovery.

The initiative ‘Cup Cake for Lenny’ is a way of giving back support to assist a much admired and well respected member of the local police unit. With support from staff who have donated their time in making the cakes and suppliers who have donated the mixture, all proceeds from sales of the cupcakes during the month of June will go towards the fund. Already public support has been fantastic with just over $1,100.00 raised to date. In a bid to achieve their $4,000.00 target, Buck’s Bakery will also be selling their cupcakes at a special fundraising Golf Day at the Beerwah Golf Course on Tuesday, June 24.

Glasshouse Country Community Plan:

The chamber of commerce has had the privilege of being offered the services of the 14 final year town planning students from the University of the Sunshine Coast for the past 14 weeks to look at Glasshouse Country as a destination. They have looked at the whole community with Beerwah as the ‘Major Activities Centre’. To develop the Glasshouse Country Community Plan they looked at all facets of the community as a blank canvas, taking into consideration the Place Plus Beerwah action plan outcomes and the recent work in Beerwah CBD. The final plan will be presented at the chamber’s networking evening on Wednesday, June 25. School News Kindy kids get their hands dirty

Students at the Beerwah and District Kindergarten have had some hands-on learning about vegetable gardens, as a result of a generous donation

by Bunnings, Caloundra.

Using an IPad to conduct research on seasonal vegetables, they wrote a wish list, and sent it to Bunnings at Caloundra.

Bunnings were so impressed with the children’s letter and enthusiasm for gardening, they visited the kindy and donated four citrus trees, six buckets, adult gardening tools, 12 child sized gardening tools, 12 pairs of children’s gardening gloves and numerous trays of seedlings ready for planting.

Teacher, Rebecca Mackinstosh said it was a hive of activity as the children worked alongside their peers, teachers, parents and Bunning’s staff, to plant the new seedlings and trees.

“We look forward to spending much more time in the garden here at kindy and picking our produce in the months ahead,” she said.

Drumming up plenty of fun

Contributed by Kylie Merola The sounds of West African drums echoed through the grounds of Landsborough State School recently. Students were transported to the tribal villages of Africa when they welcomed 'African Beat' into the school. This term their music focus has been on beat and rhythm.

To extend students understanding, they participated in a Salaka Interactive Drumming Workshop. 'Salaka' means 'sharing' in the language of Ghana.

The best part about the presentation was that it was extremely hands-on. Bringing literally hundreds of drums into the school, every student learnt to play an authentic African rhythm.

The energy and rhythm of the drummers and drums was just amazing, especially when all students played simultaneously.

They were also taught a traditional African song, to accompany the drumming, and experienced African dancing. The students had so much fun and were captivated by the experience.

They all donated a gold coin to wear PJ's for the school day, and some parents and the teachers didn't bother getting dressed either. It was such a fun day for a great cause.

All funds being raised on the day will go towards much-needed funds for improving our local community hospitals as well as helping sick children and their families when they need it most.

Over the last two months, Grace Lutheran College Year 11 students have begun a brand new robotics program, collaborating with Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to build robots from beginning to end using Arduino and Baby Orang-utan circuit boards, commercially available parts and hand cut hardware.

The program incorporates university level hardware and programming to simulate real world problems such as detecting coral and counting different types of coloured fish.

Jack Wright, a past Grace College student who graduated in 2012 and is a current undergraduate engineer from QUT, has been spearheading the project through his appointment at Grace as an IT assistant.

This kind of program has never been done before at Grace and is unparalleled by other high schools.

Mr Peter Kellett, Director of Information Services at Grace College, says a purpose built robotics learning facility will be built ready for classes in 2015.

The theme for Reconciliation Week this year was ‘Let’s Walk the Talk’. The Beerwah State School students have been learning in class what reconciliation means. The theme emphasises that we often talk about building better relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but we don’t always act on these conversations.

The children have been making feet to place around the school to demonstrate that we are walking the talk.

Re: So out of touch, Annette James response (GCNews June 11)

I'm really puzzled that you think money for School Libraries with no use is a basis of your complaint.

Last year I volunteered at the Beerwah State High School and am still doing some work this year. I can tell you I was well needed as the two staff there supported the students needs with school materials, help to find certain books they needed to complete assignments, visual display units, and teacher aid books. And Yes laptops to use in the classrooms, and occasionally for those that didn't have access to computers.

After seeing firsthand what these two library staff do for all students at the school (some of which is in their own time) and also teachers, is beyond recognition. They should be awarded some kind of thank you from this community, as should every school library, by providing educational equipment, whether it be books, visual display or laptops.

It’s disappointing that you feel the school should not supply any educational material for them to use in the library or at home to complete their studies.

I guess you support cutting the budget for education, pensioner supplements and access to health for those in need.

Cruze owners

I recently noticed steam coming from underneath the bonnet of my Holden Cruze sedan, I took it to Ray Brown Mechanical at Glass House and he couldn't believe that this little narrow coolant pipe that carries the coolant to the engine block had in actual fact, split, allowing the coolant to disperse. My vehicle is a 2009 model, five years old, and the car has done 90,000 kilometres. I have been exceptionally pleased with the car, however, when Ray Brown contacted General Motors Holden re: the replacement part, the chap laughed, he knew exactly what Ray was ordering, saying, "mate, we order hundreds of these, it is a very common fault with the car."

Ray asked if there had been a recall on this faulty Part on my Cruze."Oh no, the part is $82.50 and we have them in stock."

It appears to me that GMH would rather have the owners blow their motors than fix the problem.

Any Cruze owners make sure you have your coolant pipe checked and replaced, or it could cost you a lot more than the $82.50 for the part.

Would the male jogger who runs on Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains in the mornings during school peak time, give some consideration to the drivers using the road and please use the footpaths.

Many trucks cross the middle lines whilst going over the railway bridge causing on-coming traffic to swerve.

Should I again come across you and a truck at the same time while travelling with my two young children in the car, I may not be able to avoid hitting you, while I would be held responsible for hitting you, my children would be unharmed.

Keep Skippy Park’s name

Re: Ann Husband's letter in GCNews edition, May 28. I strongly oppose the renaming of 'Skippy Park' to 'Stan Tutt Memorial Park'. Ann mentions Stan was a wonderful contributor to the community, and that the park should be renamed in his honour.

I ask you Ann, don't you think Skippy Park is more fitting, in memory of all the kangaroos which used to live at the park?

Politicians and their obscenely excessive prerequisites The sad reality is that Australia is made up of three types of people - workers, bludgers and pensioners.

We expect the pensioners to be looked after in this country. We do not want to see elderly people homeless and destitute in Australia.

I have an immediate idea that could claw back quite a few billions – get rid of politicians outlandish entitlements after they have served their terms.

This wastage is horrendous, and a massive unjustified burden on the taxpayer and not value for money!

I recently read in the Daily Telegraph that both Rudd and Gillard get a $200,000 salary for the rest of their lives plus enormous travel allowances, office accommodation and staffing costs (even though they both have other jobs).

Why is it that we continue to provide multiple millions to give these buggers swanky offices from which to run their now quite irrelevant lives?

Do they really need an office that costs up to $14,000 a month? As well as two staff, including a senior private secretary, with an annual wages of nearly $300,000.

Then there are a host of other benefits - the airline gold pass, which entitles ex-PMs up to 40 business class flights a year. That's almost one a week!

Mr Rudd would also be entitled to the lease of a car worth up to $55,000 for the rest of his life. Leasing experts say this would be worth $1,000 to $1,500 a month.

These are in addition to their pensions under the generous former Parliamentary superannuation scheme.

Now, the ones facing the fiscal axe, are the poor bloody pensioners who have worked and paid tax all their bloody lives!

Thanks for the debt

With the interest payment on our national debt running at approximately 12 billion dollars per annum, which does not include any pay down on the principle sum, one should ponder these facts!

12 billion dollars per annum = 230 million dollars per week which = 32.7 million dollars per day.

For the payment of one year’s interest - how many houses could you provide for the homeless?

How many extra lifesaving operations could be performed? How much valuable training could you provide to young people? And all the while the debt remains.

Our children will pay dearly for the excesses of your term in office. Ms Gillard / Mr Rudd you inherited a debt free country and the cost to return us back to that situation will deny everyone a significant future benefit.

What debt?

It saddened me to read in last week’s letters a plea from a pensioner for all of us to get with the budget program, tighten our belts and somehow save our nation from the calamity of overwhelming debt.

Being in the older pensioner bracket myself, I could not help thinking wow - shades of World War II

overkill? Just a bit.

The fact is that Australia's level of debt is one third of the average of OECD countries so we are not going down the gurgler any time soon. Like any prudent government, adjustments to the tax and welfare systems have to be made. But to be running around, in effect, yelling ‘fire fire’ as the present government is doing, is way out of line with reality.

So let's all get a grip. Pensioners and all those dependent on benefits apparently are going to have to do it tougher. What's new? At least it's not World War II. Pam Lever Glass House Mountains

Environmental concerns

Well folks, the time has come to register your objections to the development of Rupari Hill, the hill with the water towers immediately west of the rockholes and overlooking Emma Park. Rupari Hill and the adjacent Coochin Creek contains many rare plants, including a magnificent stand of very old King Ferns, the Glass House Mountains Tea Tree and Glass House Mountains Myrtle which are both unique to the Glass House Mountains and found nowhere else in the world.

It also has a population of swamp wallabies and other small wallabies and the adjacent Coochin Creek is a feeding ground for the Azure Kingfisher, which is rare around Beerwah.

The vegetation on and around the hill is unusually diverse. Because it is only 1.5 km from Beerwah Railway Station, this makes the hill an unusual and valuable asset for the Beerwah Community to have.

To develop this area would destroy CCBG’s plan for a wildlife corridor connecting to Mt Coochin and downgrade the amenity of Council’s magnificent Upper Coochin Creek Conservation Reserve and future plans for Emma Park. It is in contradiction to the recommendations in CCBG’s report to council in October last year.

A small part of the hill’s south eastern margin is already to be preserved through the addition of Lot 202 on the west side of Coochin Creek, adjacent to the much-loved rockholes / cascades area on Coochin Creek, and it would be a great asset to the community if housing could be kept away from this area and the remaining part of the hill reserved.

The developers are Mt Byron Pastoral Company.

Council currently has a vegetation protection order over the hill. If you are concerned for our natural environment, please write to Cr Rick Baberowski and Mayor Mark Jamieson, letting them know that, for the protection of this special area, development on Rupari Hill is not on.

Living Running made easy

Visitor Information Centre Update

By Bev Dooley This month in the centre we have had a number of local visitors, and 85 of them were from Palmwoods State Primary School. The students were keen to learn about the formation and legend of the Glass House Mountains.

One of our longer standing volunteers, Ivon Northage led the students in three groups for a presentation in the centre, whilst the rotation enjoyed our beautiful grounds. It is quite interesting and very exciting watching young faces learn about our unique area.

Ivon is also responsible for what will be a new wall hanging unveiled in the centre in July, to celebrate the Bicentennial of Matthew Flinders. Ivon has worked on the historical project for over a year, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for what will be a wonderful addition to the centre.

People can view it in the centre after July 19.

Also this month we have celebrated 25 years of volunteering! As part of National Volunteer Week, Sunshine Coast Destination entertained 100 volunteers for breakfast at Oaks Oasis Resort in Caloundra. It was a marvellous opportunity to hold a Years of Service Presentation to mark contributions by 28 individual ambassadors, who have volunteered their time in a Sunshine Coast

Visitor Information Centre for five, 10, 15 and 20 years. A wealth of local knowledge imparted for business owners and the region alike. Finally, new to the centre, we will be stocking a range of cards by local artist Heather Gall, and of course we have our local honey and jaboticaba jam. We invite you to call in and say hello and if you have a free few hours, why not join our friendly team.

Matt and Monique Montague are two locals who love to run. They organise a free community running and mountain biking group meeting at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club grounds a couple of times a week.

Their social group of runners, walkers and riders has grown over the last 12 months, and Monique says that it’s all about being fit, healthy and supportive.

“But we’ve found that there are lots of people who – for whatever reason – have never run, or back in the day used to run and feel a little apprehensive about coming to something where they may feel out of place,” she said.

“So we’ve started a free ‘Couch to 5ks’ group specifically catering for them.

“It’s for people out there who want to do something to become healthier and fitter, and running may be of interest to them.”

Matt is incorporating the ‘Couch to 5ks’ program into their other sessions, so that as people improve in fitness, they can move across into the other regular running / walking training.

“For the first few weeks, we just want to get you out there and walking,” Monique explained.

“One of the main causes of people not following through with their goals is that the enjoyment is simply not there for them.

“We make it simple, fun and non-threatening, and once you can get through the first two weeks, things will improve and you’ll start to feel great.

It’s a great way for those who have always wanted to do fun runs or charity events, but have never had the drive.

The School Paper was a familiar part of school and family life for many decades in Queensland. It was a small magazine roughly of A5 size issued first by the Department of Public Instruction and later by the Department of Education. Different issues were published for different grades.

Packed with articles, stories, poems, puzzles and pictures, the School Paper told children about discoveries in medical science, early Australian explorers, Greek gods, railways and even the first ‘wireless’, and entertained them with short stories about children playing.

The oldest School Paper in the Bankfoot House

England and the Empire, and the change from a rural to a largely urban society. They document profound changes in society from the horse and buggy era to the automobile, and show the advent of the ‘wireless’ and the telephone.

A special issue of the paper was printed in April 1917 and gives an account of the Gallipoli campaign in 1915 in stories, articles, poems, photographs and even a map.

collection dates from 1911 and was written for Classes 1 and 2. It contains an article about explorer Edward John Eyre, a story of the Greek mythical figure Arachne and a poem called ‘The Cats’ Tea Party’.

The most recent in the collection was published in 1951 for Classes 6 and 7. There’s an excerpt from the book ‘Biggles in Africa’ by Captain WE Johns, news about the first RAAF helicopter to be stationed in Queensland, a story about a Russian man greedy for land (echoing fears of the time?), news of an oilfield in Canada, the story of explorer John McDouall Stuart, a crossword puzzle and a joke.

VET Forum reaps benefits

In April I hosted a Vocational Education and Training (VET) forum in Caloundra to discuss the VET sector and provide the opportunity for training organisations to give feedback directly to the Government.

I am pleased to report that the feedback gathered at this forum has contributed to change.

Last week Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane MP announced the first in a series of changes to reduce red tape in the VET sector. The change relates to eliminating fees imposed on training providers when minor changes are made to training packages.

I would like to again thank all attendees at the forum for providing constructive feedback that is leading to positive change.

State Budget delivers for Caloundra

I will be setting up mobile offices in Beerburrum and Beerwah on Friday, June 27. If you have a state related issue you need to discuss, please make sure you come along and see me.

Over the years I have assisted many community groups in applying for State Government grants whether it is as a referee or through a letter of support. To further assist groups in applying for grants I will be holding information forums with State Government grants officers on hand to provide advice and answer questions. The Newman Government recently delivered its third State Budget and while a lot of strong smart choices had to be made, I’m pleased we were also about to deliver for the Caloundra Electorate.

Just some of the funds allocated for this electorate included: $880,000 for child safety, and nearly $1 million for local schools as part of the Great Results Guarantee initiative.

The funding for schools in Glasshouse Country include Beerwah State High School $93,000, Beerwah State School $117,000, Glenview State School $46,000, Landsborough State School $62,000 and Mooloolah State School $52,000.

More than $100 million for the Bruce Highway upgrade (Caboolture to Caloundra) and Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway widening to six lanes, $545,000 for Caloundra Home Assist Secure as well as $6.3 million for disability services funding.

I’m also inviting Sunshine Coast residents and the council to have their say on how the government’s Strong Choices Investment Program and part of the potential proceeds of $8.66 billion should be spent in the region if the asset transactions process is approved at the next state election.

Relief for concession recipients The State Government has listened and I’m pleased to share those local residents who benefit from concession payments will not suffer any reduction in payments after the Queensland Government announced it would cover cuts announced in the Federal Budget.

We listened to Queensland concession recipients who told us that they simply cannot wear the cost of filling the gap between Queensland’s increased contribution and the Commonwealth’s concession cuts and increased fees and taxes.

Not only did we listen but we acted within the space of two days to reinstate the full level of pensioner and senior concessions.

I’m pleased many of my local constituents have been given the entitlements they deserve.

Environment Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Glossy Black Cockatoo

A recent sighting of a flock of six of these beautiful birds brought great excitement to our little group of walkers. Just on leaving Mt Beerwah State forest at the end of Streek Road, we heard the distinctive call of a pair of Glossy Black Cockatoos and then discovered more of them feeding in trees at the entrance.

The Glossy Black Cockatoo is one of our most endangered cockatoo species and is listed as ‘vulnerable’ in south east Queensland. Unlike most other species, this cockatoo can often be approached when feeding, and can be observed at close range. The only evidence of their presence may be the cracking sound they make as they feed on the seeds of the cones of Allocasuarinas.

Why, you might ask, are these birds endangered when the Yellow Tailed Cockatoos appear to be relatively common. The Glossy Black feeds solely on the seeds of two species of Allocasuarina found in our area.

Unfortunately these trees have long been cleared to make way for more attractive species.

Not only are these the sole food source, but check out the size of the seeds – not the cones! The seeds are tiny so lots are needed for a meal.

Pick a cone and keep it dry for a few days and the little winged seeds will drop out!

Another interesting fact is that Glossy Blacks will return time and time again to the same tree to feed, even though there may be other trees with seed close by. We can all monitor the presence of these birds by checking under She Oaks for chewed seeds indicating feed trees. There is even a name for these chewed seeds - Orts.

Whether you’re at home or out and about, recycling is a cinch on the Sunshine Coast.

Twenty three new public place recycling bins specifically for plastic, aluminium, paper, cardboard and glass were recently installed around the region, raising the total number to 148.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the new bins were enabling a major reduction Cr Jenny McKay with one of the new bins in waste being sent to landfill.

“Having 148 of these public recycling bins around the Sunshine Coast enables around 190 tonnes of recyclable materials to be collected and re-used rather than sent to landfills,” she said.

“This complements council’s existing domestic and commercial recycling collections that divert around 34,000 tonnes of recyclables each year.

“A big thankyou goes to project partners the Packaging Stewardship Forum for their funding contribution towards this latest batch of bins.”

Public place recycle bins have been installed at high use areas including popular beaches and parks.

Banksia plagiocarpa

If you are looking for a stunning flowering native that will attract the local wildlife, then it is hard to go past the beautiful Hinchinbrook Banksia. As its common name suggests, it is endemic to Hinchinbrook Island and the surrounding mainland in North Queensland. This amazing plant produces metallic grey buds and lemon flowers that explode into life throughout most of the year. These flowers are dripping with nectar and that’s what attracts the wildlife. It also produces highly ornamental flushes of rusty red new growth that looks fantastic. It grows between 2 to 4m high by 2m wide and is best maintained as a bushier shrub by regular tip pruning. This is a hardy plant in full sun as long as it is given a well drained position in your garden. This is just one of many rare or hard to obtain Aussie natives that Go Green will be showcasing at this year’s award-winning QLD Garden EXPO on July 11, 12 and 13 at the Nambour Showgrounds.

Blue Care - is offering Sunshine Coast residents of any age living with a chronic health condition or their carers, a specialised six-week program titled ‘Living a Healthy Life’.

The program is beneficial for people whose condition impacts their ability to perform everyday tasks.

Studies have shown participants or their carers who complete the program have an improved sense of well-being and quality of life. My morning jog

I recently got back into jogging… what kicked this off was when I ran with our Year 11 and 12 boys for the school cross country – it was exhausting and I paid for it over the next three days with achy muscles but I loved it.

For me jogging is so refreshing, I always feel better after going for a run.

This morning I was just heading home along my street at the end of a run and a car was approaching and indicating to turn into a driveway right in front of me. I stopped running and waved at the driver so he knew I would wait for him allowing him to pass, but he stopped on the road, smiled and waved back. I thanked him with another wave and jogged by.

It got me thinking that this is an example of what small town living is all about – courtesy and respect. This is something that we as residents of Glasshouse Country have the potential of enjoying every day.

My family and I have lived in the area for the last seven and a half years and love it – for that reason. We live in a great community and this

Last week over 250 aspiring Under 12s footballers descended on Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville, North Queensland for the Queensland Under 12 School Boys State championships. Blake Luland and David Bagshaw from the Glasshouse Hinterland Lions AFL Club were selected in the Sunshine Coast Team.

Twelve teams from across Queensland took part in the Championships all striving for selection in the State Squad.

The Sunshine Coast boys fought it out in the Metropolitan Division which consisted of three Brisbane teams, Gold Coast ( missing text?)

In fantastic conditions, the Sunny Coast boys David Bagshaw and were brilliant winning their first three games Blake Luland with ease, and were eligible to take on their arch enemy the South Coast side in the Grand Final.

Up until this point the South Coast team had Locally produced & beaten all their opponents manufactured by well over 10 goals Supplying: Trophies - Medallions - Plaques and were going to be a Badges - Engraving etc to the Hinterland formidable opposition.

outscored their opponents in the second half, South Coast ran out eventual winners by four goals.

The Sunshine Coast boys were then selected to play the Queensland Country representative side and were far too strong for them in wet and heavy conditions.

The Sunny Coast came away with the ‘Dunlop/Doherty Trophy’ which is played against Met West every championship.

Blake Luland (Immanual Lutheran College) was selected in the State Squad which competes at the National Championships in Sydney from July 19.

Blake also won the Runner-up Most Valuable player award for the Sunshine Coast Team.

Raffle Winner Congratulation to Lesmar and Tony Debrincat who won the Glasshouse Hinterland Lions AFL Club ‘wheelbarrow of goodies’ The club would like to thank the Mitre 10 Glasshouse for supplying the wheelbarrow and the Landsborough Pub for supplying goodies.

The first two rounds of our Club Championships have been completed and the contest is still wide open. We run a daily competition, in conjunction with the Championships, and on Thursday, the winner of Division 1 was Teresa Keast with a great score of 70 Nett. Runner up was Andrea Campbell The winners of Division 1-Teresa, Division 2 on 75 Nett. Division Joan and Division 3 Bridget 2 winner was Joan Fletcher on 74 Nett, on a count back from Kaye Jansen, also on 74 Nett. Bridget John won Division 3 with a score of 76 Nett, from runner up Joan Swyny on 79 Nett. The winners of the nearest to the pins won a golf umbrella which was kindly donated by Club Super. Taking home an umbrella was Marie Goyder on 2, Jen Kelly on 5 and Karen Kemp took out the 16th. Lea Garner won the brolly for Division 1 on the 18th, while Lydia Costello won Division 2. The ball rundown went to 79 Nett.

Day 2 of the Championships, held on Friday June 13, proved to be lucky for Lesley Eggleston who won Division 1 with a score of 74 Nett. Lesley was followed by Ruth Bowie on 75 Nett. Beth Butler won Division 2 with a great score of 71 Nett. Runner up was Margaret Goodger on 76 Nett.

Once again we had umbrellas as prizes for the nearest to the pins and the winner on the 2nd was Lea Doyle, Beth Butler on 5 and Lydia Costello on the 16th. Jasmin Parkes took out Division 1 on the 18th, while Margaret Goodger won Division 2. The ball rundown went to 79 Nett. The final rounds will be played Thursday and Friday, so good luck to all players.

The Ladies’ Jackpot Triples last Wednesday was won by Vic Muscat, Margaret Porter and Joy Reason with the Highest Score of 33, over the Runners-up, Rhyllis Aitken, John McSwain and John Aitken with 31. The mystery prize went to Noelle Dean, Bob Coxon and Peter Astbury.

The next Jackpot Triples on July 9 will have a Jackpot up around $350.00.

Jenny Hobson and Rae Farrell will play the Final of the Ladies’ ‘B’ Singles Club Competition on Wednesday, June 18. The usual Ladies’ Day social bowls will also be played, starting with morning tea at 9.00am.

Thursday afternoon’s ‘Open Pairs’ game was won by Di Hunt and Rae Farrell with 2 + 46 and the Runners-up were Wendy Platt and Jim Tatum, with the Highest Points Score of 26 in Game 1. The afternoon game now commences at 12.30pm during the winter months.

Stephen Palmer defeated John McSwain to win the 2014 ‘B’ Singles Club Certified Competition on Saturday, June 7. Round 1 of the Men’s Triples Competition is called for 1.00pm Saturday, June 21, following the Quarterly Meeting in the morning. The subsequent rounds of the Men’s Triples will be played on Sundays during the Pennant Season, on dates to be advised.
