Hi Everyone Well you might have noticed this week’s paper feels a little bit thicker, that’s because in the centre eight pages you will find our home reno guide showcasing the many local businesses that have the talent and skills to give your place a makeover!

Our cover story actually features a renovation, well actually an expansion to the Parrots in Paradise facility. Last weekend the owner Dail was able to celebrate with an official opening of their new walk through aviary enclosure. If you love beautiful birds (and I do mean the winged type) you should check out their website and go along to one of their shows (details page 3).

Good news on the letters front looks like there are still things that people want to vent about – it seems like our pet dislike at the moment is local roads. With all the rain we have been having it makes people even more aware of the quality of our roads.

So no doubt this is a topic that we will be giving lots of coverage to in the future. I am sure there will be much interest in how the new state government will prioritise the completion of this long needed work.

Located right in our very own back yard in Glasshouse Mountains, the unique facility showcases the natural beauty and rare intelligence of parrots, allowing patrons the opportunity to observe and enjoy the birds in their natural environment.

Last weekend, owner Dail launched the latest addition to her popular venue, a new walk through aviary, which gives visitors the chance to get up close and personal with more than 30 species of birds.

Nutting out a rosy future If you believe everything you read in mainstream media, the future of the Australian agricultural industry is all doom and gloom.

From rain damaged crops to imported products undercutting the domestic markets, it seems a bleak time for farmers everywhere.

But there is some hope on the horizon, albeit in the form of a humble little nut.

Whether it’s covered in chocolate, roasted, salted or au natural, there is a lot to be said for the macadamia nut.

And there’s one man who is quick to sing the praises of this Aussie hero.

Local Peachester grower Doug Benjafield’s 19 hectare macadamia farm, which gently shoulders the Stanley River, is typical of the many farms that dot the Glasshouse Country landscape.

But in many ways, it’s a shining example of good farming practices. As far as innovative and environmentally sound technology is concerned, it’s at the top of its game, representative of where the vivacious macadamia industry is headed.

It wasn’t that long ago that Doug and a group of

fellow local macadamia nut growers received a grant to purchase a chipper, which turns the clipped green waste from the trees into mulch used on the plantation, similar to the mulch derived from the husk of the nut that is removed shortly after harvesting.

Research is also underway on identifying biological controls for Husk Spot, one of the major diseases that threaten the industry. To reduce the need for chemicals, the industry already utilise soil microbes and parasitic wasps.

The Australian macadamia industry is worth around $110 million at farm gate and around $170 million at factory gate. About 70 per cent of this, or $120 million is exported, making macadamias the third most valuable horticultural export.

To this end, the peak body, the Australian Macadamia Society, have also established the Macadamia Conservation Trust, in an effort to conserve this national icon.

So it’s fair to say there is a lot happening in the world of the humble macadamia nut, an industry which ironically, owes a lot to the early farming pioneers of this region, Norm Greber.

Norm is now recognised as the first person in Australia to successfully graft macadamias, and today growers vie for the coveted Norman R. Greber OAM Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually to a member of the AMS who has made an outstanding contribution to the industry.

Doug, together with his wife Jeanne, and right hand man Rob Borck, are part of a growers cooperative, Suncoast Gold Macadamias Ltd, a leading macadamia nut processor. He says what

Doug and his trusty offsider, Honey sets the industry apart is the sharing of information and best practices amongst growers.

“What benefits one grower benefits all,” Doug said.

“Our industry is heavily focused on information sharing through regional mac groups (local groups of growers), our common interest is Australian excellence in macadamia nut production,” he said.

To this end, the latest project that Doug and Rob are working on is two custom built storage bins, designed to help their farmed nuts attain optimal moisture conditions whilst in storage, drawing heat from the shed’s roof cavity.

If they can pull it off, it will be another feather in the cap for the innovative industry, which was recently buoyed by news of a further $1 million investment in research and management of diseases over the next five years.

“We’re not radical greenies, but we’re moving in the right direction,” Doug said.

Rank Outsiders on inside track to fundraising success!

They might be called The Rank Outsiders, but this team of fundraisers have already achieved their goal to raise $2,000 for cancer research, and have now set themselves an even bigger target.

The team of 11, including locals Davina Rankin from Landsborough, Chris, Abbey and Nichola Bates of Landsborough, Joedie Clark of Landsborough, and Tammi Clark from Beerwah, have been hard at it, fundraising ahead of the Relay for Life event at the Beerwah Sportsground in October. They’ve even managed to surprise themselves with their successful fundraising efforts.

The annual Relay for Life event has evolved to become one of Cancer Council’s biggest fundraising activities, and involves teams of 10 to 15 people walking around a track overnight for 18 hours, to celebrate cancer survival and fundraise to fight back against cancer. All the funds raised from Relay for Life are invested in Cancer Council Queensland’s research, patient support services and education programs.

We caught up with Landsborough team member Davina Rankin last week to ask her about the team’s involvement in this year’s event.

How much money do you hope to raise?

Our original goal was $2,000, but we have already reached that goal, so we have increased it to $4,000.

How long have you been fundraising for?

We started fundraising at Easter and will continue up to the event in October.

Fundraising activities we have done so far include raffles and the Frocks and Flats lunch.

What other fundraising activities do you have planned?

We are running a car rally on Sunday, September 16 and hope to have a barbeque afterwards with a gold coin donation. We’re also planning more raffles, and a footy tipping competition for both NRL and AFL. What happens on the actual day of the Relay (October 6 - 7), can you tell us a bit about the format of the event?

The relay starts at 3.00pm at the Beerwah Sportsground with the survivors and carers lap of honour followed by a VIP afternoon tea for survivors and carers. Throughout the afternoon we have a carnival style atmosphere with market stalls and live entertainment. At 7.00pm the candlelight ceremony will take place to remember loved ones lost to cancer. Relay teams will be walking from 3.00pm - 9.00am and must have their baton on the move for the 18 hours.

The concept behind relay is to experience the day in the life of a cancer patient - no matter how tired, cold or wet it is - relay continues through the night and everyone keeps walking, as cancer never sleeps.

Sunshine Coast Council is calling for applications in the latest major round of grants. Community groups, artists and arts workers and landholders with projects that benefit the environment are encouraged to apply for Community Grants, the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) or Landholder Environment Grants.

The Community Grants program is open to not-for-profit groups and supports projects that provide significant long-term outcomes for the Sunshine Coast community and region. To be eligible for a Community Grant, your group’s project must have a start and finish date.

In the last round, council grants helped to fund a wide range of projects, including youth activities, multicultural celebrations and facility upgrades.

Applications for Community Grants close at 5.00pm on Saturday, September 1.

The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is an opportunity for artists, arts workers and arts organisations to apply for skills and career development funding. Skills development that RADF has supported in previous rounds includes attending arts and cultural conferences, master classes and workshops.

RADF is a Queensland Government partnership through Arts Queensland and council to support local arts and culture. Applications for RADF close at 5.00pm on Saturday, September 1.

The Landholder Environment Grants provide an opportunity for private landholders to apply for funding to help with environmental works on their properties. Priority is given to projects with high ecological value.

The big heart of a little birthday boy It’s not often you meet a five-year-old who decides he has enough toys. It’s even rarer to come across a child who is willing to forgo birthday treats in favour of those less fortunate.

But that is exactly what Mason Reynolds of Landsborough did when he celebrated his fifth birthday recently.

In the lead up to his birthday, Mason, who attends Landsborough State School, bravely decided he had enough toys, and thought he would donate them to a local charity. But after talking to his mum Anna, he went one step further, and asked his mates to donate money to a chosen charity, in lieu of presents.

“Mason and his sister Mia are both very aware of the kids in Africa so he thought he would donate to the kids there, so we were going to donate to World Vision,” said Anna.

“About a week later we met Lenore Burton at an event, who spoke to us about the Friends of Ebenezer, and we realised that she had a fantastic cause and that 100 per cent of the money would be spent on the kids.

So Mason decided he would like to give his money to the Friends of Ebenezer.”

Lenore Burton, of Friends of Ebenezer, couldn’t believe how much money Mason had raised for the charity, which supports children in Zambia.

Anna said that although this was the first time Mason had done anything like this, he was very community aware.

“A few years ago at Christmas, we went and fed the homeless people on the coast, and both Mason and Mia buy gifts for the wishing tree.

“Now Mason has decided he’d like to donate every year,” Anna said.

At Mason’s Cowboy and Indian party, around 20 of his friends donated money, while Bucks Bakery at Landsborough, and Beerwah Meats donated meat and bread, with Mason’s family donating what it would have cost to purchase these.

Altogether, Mason and his family and friends raised $370.00 for the Friends of Ebenezer, with Mason extending a special thanks to everyone.

The mammoth fundraising efforts of the Mountain Quilters met with great ‘apaws’ last week when they handed over a cheque for $6,065 to Guide Dogs Queensland.

The impressive donation represented the proceeds of the Mountain Quilters biennial quilt show at the Peachester Hall earlier this year.

Olwyn Kerr from Guide Dogs Queensland was left speechless by the donation, which exceeded everyone’s expectations.

“I am gobsmacked, she said.

“What this means to us is an enormous amount of food and counselling, lots of vets bills, children’s camps, two ultra canes, or 20 per cent of the funding for a guide dog,” Olwyn said.

With less than seven per cent government funding for some specific rehabilitation services, and none for the Guide Dogs, Guide Dogs Queensland relies on the generosity of individuals, corporate sponsors and people who leave a bequest in their Will to continue their vital work, which includes Guide Dog training and placement, white cane training, Electronic Travel Aids training, community and professional education workshops, mobility programs for vision impaired and blind children, and counselling.

At last week’s presentation, special mention was made of the efforts of two of the Mountain Quilters, Lorraine Mann and Lillian Clow, who played a major role in the production of the major raffle prize, a handcrafted quilt entitled ‘My Cat’s Garden’, which represented around 530 hours of handiwork from 30 Mountain Quilters members.

TAFE gives devine inspiration Landsborough fashion student Bre Devine had never put needle to thread before commencing her studies at Sunshine Coast TAFE but in less than two years she was announced a finalist in the QueensPlaza Avant Garde fashion competition.

“It was amazing to have my work recognised by the industry,” Ms Devine said.

“I know I will never try doing anything other than fashion as a career. In whatever corner of that industry I finally emerge, I want to be a 70-yearold woman making couture gowns!

“There is still a lot to learn and I want to expand my knowledge as much as possible in every facet of this industry, especially millinery and pattern making.

“I would then like to work with a designer and ultimately create my own label.”

Sunshine Coast TAFE fashion teacher Amanda Knights said she saw great things in Bre’s future.

“It is our job as teachers to help our students realise their full potential,” Ms Knights said.

“We have an enormously talented group of students, evidenced by the fact that five of our current students were all finalists in the QueensPlaza Avant Garde competition.

“This is a national competition run by QueensPlaza in Brisbane for Avant Garde designs, and our students were finalists in the sustainable section, meaning all their work was made from recycled materials,” she said.

Avant Garde is renowned for pushing fashion boundaries and producing new ideas or unusual styles, a brief that Bre certainly met with her Calypsoinspired garment from Homer’s Odyssey.

The talented seamstress said the garment took two solid weeks to make, with the hairlike silk curtains alone taking three days to shred, dye and weave.

A new community group is forming for local women to share friendships and wellbeing.

The launch of the Glass House Women’s Social Group is open to all ages and will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 1.00pm – 3.00pm at the Glass House Neighbourhood Centre.

This group is forming from needs raised by local women, explained Community Development Worker for the Hinterland Community Development Association, Natasha Odgers.

“A wide range of women, no matter whether they have recently moved to the area or are long-term locals, can at times feel isolated and low.

One of the most important things often lacking in these women’s lives is having a positive connection with the wider community and friends”.

“Through the formation of the Glass House Women’s Social Group, we hope to fill a space in local women’s lives through new friendships, fun, thoughtprovoking sessions, nurturing activities and opportunities to share interests and talents. This is a group for all women, whether their life is full of beans or needs a bit of a top up,” Natasha said.

Premier's Anzac prize entries open Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell is urging high school students in the Glass House electorate to get behind the newly announced Premier's Anzac Prize competition that will send 50 students to Anzac Cove in Gallipoli and the Western Front over the next three years.

Mr Powell said it was vital that our students, the first generation of school children to grow up without a surviving Anzac, keep the Anzac spirit and traditions alive. Fate of Gowinta Farms in the balance

As reported in previous editions of Glasshouse Country News, Gowinta Farms went into voluntary administration due to significant financial difficulties.

The appointed administrators, Rodgers Reidy Chartered Accountants, have been running the company since May, making all financial and management decisions, including the auction of three parcels of surplus land on Pikes and Morrisons Roads.

The auction on July 11, failed to sell any of the blocks, and at the time of printing, the agents are in negotiations with a number of potential buyers.

The administrators have scheduled a creditors meeting to be held at Gowinta Farms at 11.00am on Wednesday July 18 at which the fate of the company will be decided.

Rodgers Reidy, in a report sent to all creditors, say that there are three options which the meeting will need to consider and decide between.

If the creditors think that the company is now back on track, they can vote that the company revert to being run as per normal.

If the creditors think that things are getting back on track but aren’t confident that Gowinta Farms is out of trouble yet, the creditors can vote to accept that a Deed of Company Arrangement (DOCA) be entered into where the company be run by the existing management, but the current administrators oversee the operations for an agreed period of time.

If the creditors think that it is not worth Gowinta continuing to operate, they can vote to have the

company wound up and liquidated.

The comprehensive report establishes that the company owes in excess $16 million, the vast majority of which is owed to the Bank of Western Australia ($13.6 million).

Gowinta Farms have proposed an arrangement for the DOCA where a $1 million payment will be made into a deed fund in December 2013.

From this, the administrators will be paid and remaining monies – estimated at $536,000 – are proposed to be used to pay the preferred employee creditors (unpaid wages and superannuation) and the unsecured creditors.

The administrators have estimated that the employees owed wages and superannuation will receive 100% of what they are owed.

However, it’s not such a good result for the unsecured creditors, who are being offered 22 cents in the dollar.

Rodgers and Reidy point out that if the company were liquidated, the employees would most likely receive 59 cents in the dollar and the unsecured creditors nothing.

According to the report, Rodgers and Reidy are recommending that the creditors accept the DOCA option.

The administrators found no evidence of offences or breaches of duty of care under the Corporations Act. However, they suggest that there may be a claim for an insolvent trading if the company were placed into liquidation.

The results of the creditors meeting will be reported in the next edition of GCNews.

For some time, our activities had been largely craft based, and didn’t give the children enough opportunity to burn off their energy!

Now, whenever possible, we start with some outside time and activities that allow the kids to interact, run around and have lots of fun. We all sit down to a healthy morning tea together (usually including something sweet for the parents though!) and then play inside until we finish up with story time and songs. We have a huge range of toys for babies to pre-school age to play with and also still have a basic craft activity each week too. In addition, we are set up for babies and younger children and it’s a great opportunity for mums or dads to get out of the house (away from the chores!) and socialise.

It’s a very friendly, community based group and the kids love visiting!

Vandals strike at Skippy Park Sunshine Coast Council is faced with a $1,500 repair bill after vandals struck at Skippy Park in Landsborough last weekend.

A council spokesperson said the vandals damaged doors and locks on the kiosk and clubhouse, ripped out an external sink and two external double power points, damaged the switchboard and ripped off a whirly bird from the roof. Minor damage was also done to vegetation at the park.

The spokesperson said repairs to the damage, estimated to cost $1,500, are underway, after initial work was done to make the site safe earlier last week.

Innovative learning at Landsborough We are now half way through the school year and so far 2012 at Landsborough State School has been very exciting indeed. The school has taken an innovative and interactive approach to learning, embracing some of the latest technology available.

Smartboards, iPads, iPods and a new e-learning Innovation Centre are part of a recent technology upgrade at the school. Three quarters of the schools’ classrooms now have Smartboards and over time they envisage every classroom to have one. A Smartboard is a digital, touch sensitive whiteboard which invites student participation in the learning process through interactivity.

Most teachers and all teacher aides have also been provided with iPads to interact with their students and enhance the learning process.

One class of Year 2 students is fortunate to have acquired an entire class set of iPods for use on a one to one basis. In addition to all this, the school’s recently completed e-learning Innovation Centre is now up and running, offering students a full size lab with 28 desktop computers, a moveable Smartboard, green screen multimedia camera area, funky kid friendly furniture, a set of iPads and digital cameras.

The school is excited to be able to take students on this amazing journey with information and communications technology.

We believe these new facilities make a fun way to engage all students to be the best they can be in today’s world.

Half way there!

Wow it’s the seventh month already and term two is behind us.

Holidays are now a distant memory and the joys of late nights, sleep ins, movie marathons and absence of homework are fading fast.

Most of my holidays were pretty laid back as my dad had broken his leg, putting a damper on any camping plans. For some reason he wouldn’t let me draw rainbows and unicorns on his plaster but he did let me write ‘what a heel’ on the bottom of his foot.

Three weeks holiday was just not long enough and now term three has already thrown itself at us.

However, being back at school does have some definite bonuses. It’s good seeing friends again and talking about our awesome holidays, even if some of us just chilled at home. School is also the best place to learn new things, try new experiences and follow our dreams.

Even though I already miss those lazy holiday sleep ins; I remember missing school when I was on holidays. I didn’t miss the homework but I did miss my friends and my art lessons.

So, am I ready for term three? Bring it on!

Contributed by Pauline Clarke, Publicity Officer On Wednesday, July 4 the Glasshouse Country View Club visited Sunstone Gardens Resort in Maleny for morning tea, a girlie film and a soup lunch. We enjoyed a special viewing of Saving Grace, a comedy featuring many famous British actors including Martin Clunes, this film being the forerunner to the Doc Martin series on TV. This was followed by a selection of delicious soups prepared by the ladies of the committee.

This is the usual cry after rain events but how many of us realise that less than 100 years ago there was no Bruce Highway? When the Beerburrum baker brought supplies for the Glass House shop, Emanuel Greaves had to meet him at Coonowrin Creek.

There was no bridge. To get from one side to the other was a trek through the water.

One wonders if they took turns with the crossing or did they meet in the middle?

The Great North Coast Road Committee met in the Landsborough Shire Chambers (now the heritage listed Landsborough Museum) in the 1930s and ultimately the highway was constructed and it was first named in this building. It was 1936 when the Bruce Highway was opened.

Some old-timers remember when the highway ran along the old Landsborough Road and then it was moved so that it ran along Caloundra Street from the service station past the Landsborough police station. Many newcomers probably aren’t aware that the Steve Irwin Way (GlassHouse Mountains Tourist Route) formed a part of the Bruce Highway.

So next time you complain about the state of the roads remember the early settlers who had to contend with flooding creeks and no bridges.

Volunteers needed for Daffodil Day Cancer Council Queensland is calling for volunteers to help grow hope for a brighter cancer-free future this Daffodil Day by selling fresh daffodils and merchandise in their local community on Friday, August 24.

Cancer Council Queensland National Events Coordinator Simon Jacobs said preparations for Daffodil Day were well underway but more volunteers were needed to make the day a success.

“Community support is vital to the continued success of Daffodil Day,” he said.

“This year, we hope to sell 780,000 fresh daffodils and raise more than $1.9 million across the state, but we can’t do it without the support of our energetic volunteers.

“Whether you’re a past volunteer or a new recruit, if you can lend a hand on August 24 to help sell daffodils and merchandise, you can help us continue our work to give hope for a brighter, cancer free future.

“If you think the one in two who gets cancer in their lifetime is one too many, then get involved, lend a hand and help us turn Queensland yellow on August 24.”

All money raised from Daffodil Day supports Cancer Council Queensland’s vital work in cancer research, education programs and patient support services.

Mr Jacobs said around 300 Australians are told they have life-threatening cancer every day and that with community support we can make a difference and beat this disease.

“Your support will give hope for better treatments, hope for more survivors, and hope for a cancer free future,” he said.

The daffodil is the international symbol of hope for those touched by cancer, including patients, survivors, supporters, carers, family and friends, as it blooms at the end of winter and heralds the

Sunshine Coast Council is proud to support the Pyjama Foundation by nominating libraries across the Coast as collection points for the 2012 Pyjama Drive.

Members of the community can donate pyjamas until the end of July at any branch library or mobile library across the Sunshine Coast.

The donations will be provided to children who enter foster care with little or no belongings.

Donations need to be new pyjamas for girls and boys, in summer and winter styles and from sizes 00000 to adult. The Pyjama Foundation also recruits, screens, trains and supports Pyjama Angels who volunteer to work with foster care children to help with their literacy and numeracy in a fun and supportive way.

This year is the National Year of Reading and research shows that any improvement in literacy and numeracy skills will have a positive impact on a person’s life. Sunshine Coast Libraries and the Pyjama Foundation share a common goal of promoting reading, literacy and learning.

Council how much longer?

This letter is to the council on behalf of all people that use the road between Beerwah and Landsborough.

The section between Newells Road and Clarks Road is not only disgusting but dangerous.

They keep putting patches on top of patches, even when it is still raining, then when someone drives past your car you are showered with wet tar covered rocks or they splatter around under your car. There is only one small section that is safe to drive on and that is only if there isn't anyone coming the other way.

The council has said they are trying to get money from the State Government for flood damage, come on get it fixed and then if they come forward with the money you still get to put it in the bank. In the meantime we have to put up with the damage to our cars.

Last week they cleaned out the drain beside that section, what for?

Coping with change Making changes can be a very painful experience for many of us. It surely was so in my case.

I used to suppress my feelings with smoking, drinking and often with ‘comfort-eating’.

I hit the lowest point in my life. Then a very loving, caring, peaceful man came into my life and assisted me in turning darkness into light.

A true meaning of ‘when the student is ready – the teacher appears’.

I was shown how to heal myself to still the busy, turbulent mind and to ‘own my feelings’.

The emotions play such an important part in our overall wellbeing. How we react to others and situations governs our inner peace. Stress affects our whole being and it is self inflicted.

In the West we seem to separate Body from Soul, however integral health and wellbeing includes: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

Emotional freedom is more important than IQ. I welcome the opportunity to help others as I have been helped in my journey through ‘the school of life’ from ‘No Where’ to ‘Now Here’.

Any news on if traffic lights are being put in at the entrance to Glasshouse township?! Two reasons I ask. One is that 80 per cent of traffic doesn’t stop at the stop sign turning left (I personally have been rear ended twice there due to the fact that I have stopped), and secondly I can see increasing frustration with some drivers as the volume of traffic on Steve Irwin Way has more than doubled in the past 18 months.

It is becoming quite hard to get out onto Steve Irwin Way at certain times of the day, which is of course causing frustration with the people who are also behind you.

I really feel for the younger drivers as they do not have the experience, but seem to be copping a lot of abuse from other drivers due to the fact that they are doing the right thing and are waiting.

I mean seriously how can trucks turn into Glass House and if you are waiting to turn right and hesitate because you are making sure that the lane is clear due to the fact you can’t see past the truck, you cop people beeping at you!!!

Isn't that how a couple of our young ones from the area have lost their lives in this situation?

People are taking some crazy risks because they are sick of waiting.... It seems to be a major accident there is just a matter of time.

Editors note In June 2011 GCNews received a press release from Andrew Powell and Cr Anna announcing that funding had been allocated for the future upgrade of the Steve Irwin Way between Bowen Road and Amy Drive in Glass House Mountains from the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program 2011-12 to 2014-15 and that they looked forward to seeing the work undertaken before 2015.

We have put the question to Mr Powell that with the change of State Government can locals still expect the work to be completed in this time frame? And this is his response "I am conscious of the need to provide the growing community of Glasshouse Mountains with some certainty around the future of road upgrades at the Reed Street intersection."

"I know this upgrade needs to happen and I will continue to work with the Minister for Transport and Main Roads to ensure this project has its place in the pipeline of projects the new Government is working through." Mr Powell said.

On June 21, Peter Voser, the CEO of the world’s largest corporation, Royal Dutch Shell, was interviewed on the ABC 7.30 Report. He was here in regard to the $30 billion project his company is undertaking in Australia. He was asked what effect Australia’s $28.00 per tonne carbon tax would have on the project. He replied “none” as his company has long been factoring in carbon tax on their projects. When asked at what rate, he replied “$40.00 per tonne”. To the question, “What will happen to countries that don’t have a carbon tax?” he replied that they would suffer economically as the world moved on without them. Super Strawberry Round 2 Good to see some activity this week in the 2012 Super Strawberry Competition.

Flooring trends

Jo and Peter Sommerfield have owned Beerwah’s own retail flooring shop, Aussie Carpet and Vinyl, for the past two years and have their fingers on the pulse regarding what locals are looking for in flooring.

While the name of the business includes the words carpet and vinyl they also carry an extensive range of floor and wall tiles and custom made blinds for all budgets.

GCNews popped in to talk to them about the latest trends in flooring and whether they had noticed any changes to what Glasshouse country locals are choosing.

Peter said he’s definitely seen an increase in the number of enquiries he’s had for DIY hard flooring. “We have plenty of shoppers who are keen to transform a room in a day and are happy to give the DIY option a go and lay the floor themselves,” he said.

Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society Inc. Contributed by Bob McLean Phone: 0427 606 240 Last time we spoke about Bromeliad Aechmea, we will continue looking at the Aechmea.

These bromeliads lend themselves to cultivation more readily than other bromeliads and so are more widely grown and available.

Over 304 species have been identified and probably the best-known would be Aechmea fasciata, which was introduced into cultivation in 1826.

Aechmea are saxicolous (growing on rocks), terrestrial and epiphytic.

The beauty of the foliage and long lasting flower spike are a contributing factor to their popularity.

The varieties available are almost infinite and their shape, size and colour are extremely variable – from a few centimetres high to about three metres in diameter.

Plants may be plain green, maroon, rose, brown; striated and extremely ridged or delicately soft. They may be spayed out in open rosettes or tubular in form.

The inflorescence after flowering holds a berry-like fruit, which is a distinguishing ‘trademark’ of the Aechmea genus.

The Aechmea caudata is a species which has stiff grey-green leaves tinged with blue on the tips, forming a slender upright vase that can reach 1m tall. Reddish bracts and lime-yellow florets appear on a 1m tall branched flower stem.

In full sun the leaves turn a golden green which can be quite attractive.

It is very vigorous, so should be planted where it is can dominate an area without fear of overgrowing slower varieties.

This is a very hardy plant, able to withstand salt spray, frost and wind.

The photos show the difference between a plant grown in full sun, to the same plant grown in part shade. The difference in colour has not varied but the flower is half the size.

Helmholtzia glaberrima If you have ever wandered through the rainforests of Lamington National Park you would have inevitably seen the gorgeous Stream Lily decorating the surrounds of many of the shaded waterfalls. The Stream Lily is a lover of constant moisture and a semi shaded to shaded position.

It has lovely lush thick leaves and in summer produces stunning large inflorescences (flower spikes) that are pale pink and white. The Stream Lily

grows well in pots but must have shade and constant moisture.

In the ground it forms a large clump and provides habitat for frog species. For a wet shady spot you will not find a better native.

Development incentives

Rural Roads

During council’s recent budget sessions I raised the issue of reducing charges to promote economic development. Council formed a small working group to examine opportunities and options for reduced fees.

By the time the budget was brought down we successfully developed targeted incentives to support business and economic growth. The incentives change the fee structure in the development services area to support employment generating projects. Development application fees have been reduced by 5 per cent for all commercial, business and industrial land uses. And there will be a 25 per cent reduced application fee for selected land use types including office, shop, medical centre, showroom, warehouse, general industry and light/service industry in the form of a rebate when use starts within two years. Another highlight of the new development incentives is the start of free pre-lodgement meetings.

It effectively means applicants can meet with council staff to discuss development applications before submitting them. The removal of the meeting fee means a huge saving in cost and time for applicants and I encourage applicants to make the most of the new incentives.

Celebrating the festive season

It’s time to have your say about council’s level of support for communitybased celebrations and events held each year during the festive season.

It’s a chance to give your feedback about the importance of festive season celebrations in your local area and the region. The festive season runs from December to January, and includes Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Australia Day celebrations. Provide your comments by completing the survey on council’s website. You might win tickets to the Caloundra Music festival if you’re lucky.

Council’s Sundayze series is headed for Beerwah on Sunday, July 22 at Turner Park from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. It’s a free community event featuring a comedy juggler extraordinaire and two bands with a funky fusion dynamic.

As promised, I recently followed up from the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) workshop and met with LGAQ representatives in road infrastructure. This meeting provided an opportunity to discuss my concerns regarding the funding desperately needed for upgrading rural roads. It was apparent again that our hinterland roads fall outside the spotlight of any federal or state government funding guidelines. Whilst roads play a significant role in providing access for our residents and economic benefits for our rural people, we still don’t qualify as one of the focused areas. The issues will be raised with Michael Caltabiano, the new Director-General of Transport and Main Roads and will form an agenda item at the next state meeting of the LGAQ. Whilst they may sympathise with my view of the need for these roads to be constructed more affordably, the change will need to happen on a national level without compromising on safety.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

The other day my nine-year-old daughter came home from school after having her first theological debate with someone in her class about whether God was real or not. At first she was quite set back at the thought of someone putting God in the same category as Santa Claus or the tooth fairy, but after sharing her experience with mum and dad, she now understands that there are many belief systems not just in our world but in our community also.

Whenever I talk with people about their opinion on whether or not Christianity should be part of a child’s upbringing, the usual view is ‘I think it’s good for them to get a bit of religion as a kid, it won’t hurt them anyway. It never did me any harm.’

It’s interesting how times have changed from the days when almost everyone went to Sunday School, because it was the right thing to do.

But what intrigues me most is that many adults or parents believe that it’s great for kids, but not that relevant or important once someone comes of age.

Jesus had a different view on this. He said that the kingdom of God belonged to little children and that adults need to learn from them, the way to enter into it.

The scriptures teach that learning the ways and truth of the message of Jesus is more vital for us who have come of age and can choose our lifestyles, value system and spirituality, than for a child who is yet to have that freedom of choice.

The trouble with us adults is we often think that it’s more important to build ourselves up and rely on our own strength and understanding to get along in life rather than humble ourselves (like a child) and look to the one from where all the good things we have come from.

Proverbs 3:5 says, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.’

Just like a child trusts their parents to guide, teach and protect them, so must we trust Christ to save us from leading ourselves astray.

The sign on will be held Friday, July 20 at the Landsborough tennis courts. All level of players are welcome to join this local competition. Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by Trevor Bertram Last Wednesday, 11 July, was our monthly ‘Jackpot 3 Bowls Triples’. The card drawn out for the day’s game was ‘Lowest Winning Score’ and the winners of the day were the team of Helga Nicholls, Rob Scullion and Jimmy Tatum with a score of 21. In second place, with a score of 22, was the team of Darryl Kull, Marleen Bertram and Max Viterale. The ‘out of the hat’ prize went to Di Garland, Noelle Dean and Ron Rix. The ‘Jackpot’ of $220.00 was also won with a +19 being drawn. The lucky winners were Millie Freshwater, Rae Farrell and Kerry Capern.

Ladies’ Day this Wednesday, July 18 will see the Final of the Ladies’ Club Triples Competition and also a social game for both ladies and men.

While play commenced for a couple of ends on Thursday morning, play had to be called off due to rain. Unfortunately, the rest of the day’s play had to be cancelled.

Saturday saw the commencement of the 2012 Caboolture District Men’s Pennant Competition with our three Divisions all playing at home.

Glasshouse Division 1 defeated Solander Lake 69 to 49, Division 4 went down to Solander Lake 40 to 33 and Division 5 had a 39 to 36 win against Bongaree. Overall, an encouraging start to the season – well done Glasshouse. This Saturday Division 1 plays Caboolture Lakes ‘at home’, Division 4 plays Bongaree ‘away’ and Division 5 plays Solander Lake ‘at home’.

Coming Events Monday, July 23 at 9.00am – Monthly 2 Bowl Triples. Two games of 21 ends with lunch.

Welsh Pony Winners Glasshouse Country Pony Club would like to apologise to Jill Horsburgh for an error in the Maleny Show results that we supplied for publication. Kintyre Evita was misrepresented as winning Supreme Welsh Pony, a title that belongs to the Welsh A mare Alpha Raven.

Alpha Raven won the Welsh A mare class and Champion Welsh A and then went on to win Supreme Welsh Pony over all other purebred Welsh ponies including Kintyre Evita. Kintyre Evita won the Welsh B mare class and was Champion Welsh B pony.

Alpha Raven has had an amazing show season winning Champion Welsh A at Kilcoy, Maleny, Caboolture and Nambour Agricultural Shows, however she will have a very short show career as she is due to foal in the coming months.

The Welsh Pony is a breed suitable for all the

family. The Welsh Mountain Pony (Section A) is a small, sound and intelligent pony that was used for many years in the Welsh coal mines and today is an ideal child's pony and is also suitable for harness. The Welsh Pony (Section B) is often a little taller than the Welsh Mountain Pony and has all the same great attributes but with greater emphasis being placed on its riding qualities. The Welsh Cobs are larger still and are described as 'the best ride and drive animal in the World'. The Welsh Cob has evolved through the centuries and is known for his courage, strength and hardiness.

All sections of the Welsh Pony are known for their wonderful temperament.

There are a number of avid Welsh Pony studs in the Beerwah, Peachester and Mooloolah areas.

Beerwah Bulldogs Contributed by Dean Roberts Beerwah Bulldogs hosted the Caloundra Sharks in A Grade and Under 18 on Saturday while the women took on Springfield in Brisbane.

The women looking to remain in the top four, lost to Springfield 26-12 and are in a real dog fight with Browns Plains to lock up fourth spot and a have a chance at the title.

The Under 18’s once again went toe to toe with the Sharks in the first half trailing 18-12 at the break, but could not withstand them in the second half to go down 54-12.

A Grade was similar to the Under 18 game with the Bulldogs staying with the speedy sharks in the first half. But after suffering a few game ending injuries and with three of the under 18’s backing up from a full game could not hold the visitors in the second stanza who showed they are not third on the table for no reason with some entertaining footy.

Next Saturday the women get their chance to continue to push for a semi final spot against Waterford 3.00pm at Beerwah while the Senior’s head to Noosa on Sunday.

The only Junior team to play on the weekend were the Under 12 Blue Team who continued their good form this season by defeating Noosa 36-0 while all the other teams had a weekend off due to cancellations of the games because of the wet weather.

Countdown to London According to the world’s leading armchair athletes, the triathlon is much more fun to watch than it is to compete in. Despite this, the triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the world today. So it’s no wonder it is expected to be one of the most exciting and high profile events at this year’s Olympic Games.

So unlike the armchair athletes that cheer from the sidelines, whether you are an aspiring athlete or just want to get fit, many would agree that it sometimes takes just a little bit more effort and motivation to get up to train on these cold, dark and often wet, winter mornings.

So thank goodness someone is looking out for us. And that someone is Peter Thorpe and his merry band of fellow trainers, who together make up the region’s very first local triathlon group, Ngungun Triathlon Group.

Local resident Peter, who set up the informal group nearly a year ago, said training as part of a group is a good idea for those people who find it difficult to keep up the motivation when training alone.

The group, which numbers between 20 - 30, train together up to five times a week, and include men, women and children of all ages and abilities.

“We’re very much an inclusive group,” Peter said.

It’s more about the opportunity to support and encourage each other on our fitness journey,” he said.

“It’s open to everyone, regardless of age or level of ability,” he said.

Peter said his goal, which reflected many of the members of the group, was not to get faster, but still be doing it when he is 65.

“We’ve got a lifetime to get fit, that is pretty much our philosophy,” he said.

Some of us swim, ride and run, some of us just do one. There are so many training options and wonderful places to train in this area,” he said.

Because the group is not run as an official club, Peter said there is no cost to join, and there are usually no ongoing fees, other than a small fee to cover insurance costs on a Saturday swim, ride and run from the Beerwah Pool.

Some of our group are off to the world championships in October in New Zealand, while others have been successful in local events, some do ironman events and kids triathalons, but it’s not about competitiveness, some of our members don’t even compete, they just participate to keep fit,” he said.
