Hi Everyone...

on the Cover

After 15 years in the job, I know I am becoming predictable and that my final column of the year is probably getting a little repetitive for regular readers, as I am pretty sure it always has the same theme.

However, after bringing the paper together week after week throughout the year, when it gets to this time of the year really all I can say is how much I appreciate the wonderful individuals that make up Team GC&M News for their hard work.

I also want to give a big thanks to our ongoing advertisers who support us so we can bring you the news each week and, of course, thumbs up to all the dedicated readers who like to keep informed about what is happening in our local communities.

Mostly I am just grateful that the while newspapers are supposed to be dead, with social media supposed to be the only future, our community bucks the trends and stays loyal to all the great things about having a community newspaper!

Please remember when you plan to spend money to consider spending it with our advertisers so you can continue to enjoy your weekly local catch-up.

Maleny Christmas Tree Festival

Head to Maleny Uniting Church to see more than 35 beautifully decorated Christmas trees as part of the church's annual Christmas tree festival, which runs until Monday, December 23 from 2-8pm and on Christmas Eve from 2–7pm, followed by the Christmas Eve service.

Local News Good things come in threes

By Sonia Clark Earlier this year GC&M News shared a story about the Robertson family of Glass House Mountains, which doubled in size when mum of one Bianca gave birth to triplets - Indiana, Dakota and Hendrix.

With Christmas just around the corner we decided to check in with Bianca to see how life has changed for her and what the family has planned for the triplets' first Christmas.

It has become a bit of a tradition at GC&M News to include cute photos of our littlest residents on the cover for each Christmas edition and this year we have gone for cuteness overload featuring the triplets along with proud big brother Maverick as our cover stars.

Bianca said that life with triplets was like doing a constant marathon CrossFit circuit that only ends when the babies surrender to sleep!

“You fall in an exhausted heap, ready to do it all again in about six hours. However, I do get a lot of help, one day a week with a nanny, one day a week in day care and my mum, aka Super Gran, stays over two nights a week. My husband Pete is a domestic god as our washing has tripled in quantity and I haven’t done a single load yet,” Bianca said.

She said on some days the babies were relentless and seemed to have an uncanny knack of knowing when to wake up, which seemed to happen as soon as another baby had just gone to sleep. However, some nights they sleep through the entire night.

Dakota, Hendrix and Indiana Robertson “Sometimes, if you’re really lucky, there are these extra special moments where all four children are asleep in the day together and this exquisite symphony called silence reaches your ears,” Bianca said.

Big brother Maverick has taken the new additions in his stride, though he has naturally gravitated towards his little brother Hendrix. Bianca said that she was pleased to see Maverick deepen his bond with his dad since having the babies.

Christmas Day plans include spending time with Bianca’s mum in Brisbane and her brother, who also had a little girl at the same time as the triplets.

Bianca’s tips for people with four young children are to practise gratitude and look for the silver lining in every moment of chaos.

“Build your village, keep your expectations low, be willing to ask for help and recognise that the duality of the universe means that with every challenge you are also being supported in that moment too,” she said.

Volunteers recognised A morning tea was held at the Maleny Community Centre last Thursday to recognise and celebrate the amazing volunteers in the electorate of Glass House.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the work of volunteers was priceless and our communities would not look the same were it not for the countless hours that volunteers, from all walks of life, put in each and every week.

Community groups across the electorate were asked to nominate one of their outstanding volunteers along with a short explanation of why they chose the person. Featured in this article are recipients who live within Glasshouse Country and Maleny.

Hanna Brandli was nominated by the Beerburrum State School P&C Association for her contribution to the school and also her commitment to volunteering with Celebrate Glasshouse Country and the Glasshouse Country War on Waste group. Hanna is passionate about looking after our environment and looking at innovative ways to reduce waste in our community.

Karen Shaw was nominated by Maleny Commerce.

Karen has worked tirelessly for several years as the chamber’s secretary and on many projects, the biggest being the Maleny Christmas Festival that she has coordinated on behalf of the chamber for the past six years.

James Drake was nominated by the Maleny SES. James has been an active SES member for 15 years and transferred into the Maleny group about six years ago. He has attended numerous operations and assisted his community in times of disaster as well as participating in numerous SES community events.

Roger Reilly has been the treasurer and is now president of Celebrate Glasshouse Country and has worked tirelessly to build the Glasshouse Country brand as a recognised region for tourism and a cohesive community. He also worked with Ivon Northage to produce the book 'The National Heritage Listed Glasshouse Mountains', which comprehensively shares the story of the mountains with the reader.

Margaret McKenzie has been a volunteer at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre for the past four years. In that time she has worked tirelessly in her role as administration volunteer using her skills and knowledge to update the centre’s policies and procedures.

Les Strong, vice president of the Peachester History Committee, has been a major player in setting up the new Peachester Heritage Centre. In particular he has been responsible for installing the unique Jim Hall collection, including unpacking the collection on its return from Woodford Museum, checking the small electrical motors, making restoration and repairs where necessary, and coordinating his team of willing helpers.

Fiona Gray has been nominated for her volunteer work with both the Peachester State School and the broader Peachester community, including the Peachester CWA through activities that foster communication and community spirit. While Fiona’s children are no longer at the school she continues to assist the school in many ways.

Marilyn Large is the assistant Guide leader with Maleny District Girl Guides. Marilyn has been the one constant member since the group reformed in 2005.

Leaders, girls and parents have come and gone but during that time Marilyn has only missed a couple of meetings due to ill health.

Ray Ellemor has been an active member of the Maleny Arts and Crafts Group for the past 19 years, doing a wonderful job as convenor of the wood crafting group. Over the years Ray has has taken on many roles within the group while being a quiet achiever who not only does what is asked of him but what he sees needs doing.

Dan Sandeman has been part of the Maleny Rural Fire Service for 16 years and currently holds the position of Caloundra group officer. He was previously a member of the Maleny SES for more than 13 years. Dan has given his life to volunteering and helping his local community and more recently joined the Maleny Auxiliary Fire and Rescue Service.

Tim O’Shea is a volunteer firefighter with the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade. Tim, like many local volunteers, is firstly a dad, as well as working full time as a state government employee.

He regularly competes in strong man events and is a coach with the Bee Gees Football Club while still making time to volunteer for the brigade.

Clem Davies is a committee member and tech guru for the Maleny Community Centre, offering his time to upgrade, fix, change and sort out technical equipment. He is also there for the centre’s hirers and community groups to assist with all their technical needs.

Leanne McAllister has been involved with the Glasshouse District Cricket Club since 2012 and in 2017 was appointed as grants officer, raising more than $60,000 in funding for the club. She is also

heavily involved with the administration of junior cricket and this year was presented with the Club Person of the Year trophy.

Graeme Glover, chair of the Maleny Bowls Club board, is an outstanding hands-on volunteer and active within the club as well as undertaking the duties and responsibilities of his position including local media reporting and sponsorship liaison. He also works with other members to ensure the quality of the playing surface.

Susan Dalziel is part of the Maleny Probus Club and in the past two years she has simultaneously taken on the roles of secretary, speaker co-ordinator and newsletter co-editor. During this time, she has also successfully introduced new processes that have increased the efficiency of club administration.

Lesley Stipanov is the purchasing officer for the Maleny Visitor Information Centre and has been a volunteer with them for several years and has served as a committee member. She does a fantastic job of sourcing, purchasing and displaying appropriate

souvenir items in the centre that showcase the Maleny hinterland area.

Rachel Clements has taken on the role president of the Mooloolah State School P&C this year and has given it her all for the school community. She has taken on the many challenges with the support of her entire P&C team and come out the other side with extensive knowledge and continued commitment to the P&C and wider school community.

Helen Manson has been a long-time member of the Beerburrum School of Arts for many years including taking on the role as treasurer and contact person for all hall hirers. Following her resignation in October and in recognition of her contribution to the Beerburrum community, a tree has been planted in the hall grounds with a plaque acknowledging her outstanding efforts.

Darryl Hawke is president of the Maleny Community Gym who contributes many hours to benefit the group’s members and is always supportive of the trainers and their efforts to provide a service they are very proud of.

After 14 years with Glasshouse Country Care, general manager Ann McQuay has officially retired from the helm of the organisation, bidding colleagues and friends a fond farewell on her last day on Friday, December 13.

Ann said she had enjoyed her years with Glasshouse Country Care and has appreciated being part of the expansion of the service, which has grown from a small community association assisting a couple of hundred clients to its current position as a large organisation servicing more than 1,800 active clients.

“We love to say that from small beginnings big things have grown, and it has been wonderful to see the service expand and flourish. We have an amazing team of dedicated people committed to supporting the community and it has been an absolute honour over the years to work with them,” Ann said.

Ann originally started as a volunteer treasurer in 2005, stepping in to assist in the office and then ultimately into the position of general manager.

During her time she has seen a lot of changes in the industry including the evolution of community organisations as the not-for-profit organisations matured to meet government standards.

Glasshouse Country Care originally operated from the old Beerwah Community Hall with a group of dedicated volunteers and one staff member before becoming an incorporated association around 1996. In November 2018 it became a company that is now one of the biggest local employers in the area, Ann said.

Over the years the organisation has moved from solely offering community care to broader services including community care, packaged care and NDIS services as well as facilitating the local Meals on Wheels service.

Ann has lived locally in Glass House Mountains for the past 24 years. Before joining Glasshouse Country Care, she and her husband Barry owned the Glass House Mountains Newsagency for nearly 10 years.

She said that she had seen huge changes as more people move to the area, with new developments and estates. This growth has seen the need for community support increase.

“The area has grown so much but I still believe we are very lucky to live here. We are still a caring semi-rural community and we don’t seem to have the same problems that other areas have,” Ann said.

In the past six weeks, with the support of the board of directors, Ann has been working to ensure a smooth transition for her successor, Clare Mullins.

“It’s been a great journey but now it’s time for someone fresh to lead. I am confident and really happy in handing over to Clare who is very experienced and I’m now looking forward to spending more time with my family,” Ann said.

While Ann may be stepping down from her position as general manager, she said she would remain as a volunteer secretary on the board of directors.

“I’m returning back to my volunteering roots in my retirement,” Ann laughed.

Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

Beerwah Aquatic Centre upgrade Swimmers and water therapy patients alike now have a contemporary new pool and better amenities to enjoy, thanks to a $1.8 million upgrade of the Beerwah Aquatic Centre.

The splash-tastic works include a new 17m heated and covered pool, with accessibility features including a wheelchair ramp, handrails and seating.

The new pool will complement the existing 25m heated pool, 12.5m heated pool and toddlers' pool.

A fresh look main entry from the carpark has also been constructed, along with an impressive facelift for the Roberts Road façade and refurbished amenities.

The upgraded centre was officially opened just in time for the start of the school holidays.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said he was confident hinterland residents would "reap many benefits from this vital health and wellbeing commitment in Beerwah”.

Cr Rick Baberowski said the district pool now looked as it should and complemented the look and feel of the local country towns.

“The upgrade means all residents of the Glasshouse Country area can now access warm water therapy and take part in fitness classes and improved learnto-swim classes,” Cr Baberowski said.

“Thanks to the new 17m undercover pool, more warm water therapy options will be available to those undergoing rehabilitation, the elderly and people with a disability.

“Aqua fitness enthusiasts and kids learning to swim will also have better conditions for potentially a

“Plus all our community will experience a bit more pride with better facilities thanks to the extensive renovations to the road frontage, entry and change room upgrades, which with some great underwater images look incredible,” Cr Baberowski said.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said swimming was an incredibly popular sport in Queensland and there was no mystery about why that was the case.

“We need to ensure that the opportunity to get involved is as accessible as possible to everyone in our community,” Mr Wallace said.

The upgrade has been made possible with capital funding from the Sunshine Coast Council ($1.04 million) in a funding partnership with on-site operators Swimfit ($260,000) and grant funding ($500,000) from the Australian Government through Sport Australia.

Business News Maleny Cheese official reopening

By Sonia Clark Maleny Cheese has officially opened its refurbished Maleny Cheese café and unveiled the refreshed Maleny Cheese brand.

Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace officiated at the re-opening of the business last Friday marking the completion of extensive repairs to the café and factory following a devasting arson attack in September 2018, which saw the business close its doors for nine months.

With support from the local community, customers and the local dairy industry, the boutique dairy producer and agri-tourism business was able to get back on track four months ago.

Owner Sara Bucher said the re-opening event was a wonderful way to celebrate the friendships and connections of the community-oriented family business and to acknowledge those who had supported their rebuilding journey.

“For over 15½ years Maleny Cheese has been part of a wonderful community in a very special dairy region. Our community extends to the dairy farmers that supply Maleny Cheese as well as the local dairy processors, retailers and markets that help supply its products,” Sara said.

The updated Maleny Cheese café overlooks the cheese and yoghurt making facilities allowing customers to see firsthand the manufacturing process.

Sara said Maleny Cheese continued to incorporate the full farm-to-plate dairy experience and she and her team were proud to produce quality, dairy products from exclusive supply local farmers.

More changes to Glenview water park application In another change to plans for the Glenview water park and resort complex, an application has been made to Sunshine Coast Council to vary the footprint of the internal waterbody, and to show that the changes will have no impact on flooding issues.

On planning maps submitted with the application (MCU14/0098.03), the waterbody is being considerably expanded in size, flooding an area that was originally earmarked for a "great lawn"

open space entertainment zone, then amended to be the location of the surf pool.

The development consultants who submitted the amendments – Adams and Sparkes – were contacted for comment but referred the matter to the proponents, Sanad Capital.

At the time of printing, Sanad Capital had not responded to the question of whether the surf pool had been removed from the water park concept.

Places & faces Peachester Park sparkles with community spirit

Contributed by Sally Joyce Many Peachester children rode their bikes or walked to the newly acquired Peachester Park last Monday afternoon to meet for the first ever neighbourhood nature play tinsel bomb. Children made their own trees from sticks they found to create an installation of tinsel and bauble tee-pee trees, which were lit up from donated solar lights.

Children added a small wish tag to their tree. This was a great opportunity for the local children to scribe their own wishes for what they would like to see at their park when it is included in Sunshine Coast Council’s future budget of park spending. Until now, the people of Peachester have not had a public park and the park is yet to have any amenities.

This was a great opportunity for Peachesterites to show their gratitude for having this play space and to share wishes and goodwill for what we have this Christmas that we did not have last Christmas. Our Peachester Park dream is now sparkling a little brighter thanks to ongoing community spirit.

Boomerang Bags Maleny has been established for two years and the small core group of members are feeling positive about being part of this worldwide community-based initiative as well as raising funds for the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

Meighan Shaw was the driving force in bringing together volunteers to up-cycle donated and second-hand fabrics to create colourful fabric shopping bags as an alternative to single-use plastic bags.

Members operated street stalls and attended local markets, including this year's Sustainability Expo Maleny to promote the initiative.

Recently the group members were thrilled to donate $1,000 to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre from funds raised over the past 12 months selling the bags for $5 each. The Neighbourhood Centre will use the funds towards Christmas hampers and other forms of support for needy local people at this stressful time of year.

Boomerang Bags Maleny meets on the second Thursday of each month from 10am-2pm in the CWA bicentenary room on the corner of Coral Street and Bicentenary Lane in Maleny and are always looking for new helpers who are keen to contribute.

Sewing skills are not necessary as there are many tasks involved in making the bags including sorting, ironing, cutting, pinning and screen printing pockets as well as the creative process of matching fabrics to produce the beautiful bags.

Donations of fabrics such as cotton, linen, sheets,

doona covers and thread are very welcome so that the recycling process can continue.

The members would love to encourage others to come to their meetings, even if it is just to pop in for an hour or two, to share ideas and fabrics and learn the ropes to make your own bags at home, or just come for a cuppa in a friendly, welcoming environment where conversations and friendships abound.

If you would like to purchase a bag they are available at Peace of Green Gallery in Maple Street for $5 each.

Readers may remember Maleny artist Laszlo Szerenyi appearing on the GC&M News front cover in April when we featured a story about his artistic gift of appreciation – a unique water colour painting he donated to Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital.

We recently learned that Lazlo isn’t just an artist but has also self-published a book titled ‘How to ruin your precious relationship? Then overcome it…’ which he hopes will provide an insight into his life journey that may in turn help others by example.

Laszlo said that it took him eight months to write the book and he hopes that by sharing his deeply personal perspective he may help build a bridge to allow others to search for the truth within.

“I wanted to share my angle on relationships and what I’ve learnt. If this book can resonate with even one person and help improve their

ability to take responsibility for themselves, I will be happy," Laszlo said.

“I want people to know that they are not alone and I humbly offer my insights in the hope others may benefit.”

He is currently working on two more spiritually oriented books around parenting and relationships. ‘How to ruin your precious relationship? Then overcome it …’ can be purchased at Rosetta Books, Maleny.

Free parking in Caloundra CBD

Shoppers are being encouraged to visit Caloundra over the holidays with the help of Sunshine Coast Council’s free parking in the Caloundra CBD. The Caloundra parking amnesty runs all through December and until Monday, January 27.

The parking meters will be switched off but signed time limits will still apply.

Division 2 councillor Tim Dwyer said free 2P parking is a great way to bring visitors and locals into the CBD and encourage them to shop local.

“The amnesty period will cover the pre-Christmas shopping time and the post-Christmas summer sales, both important retail engagement periods for locals as well as visitors to town,” Cr Dwyer said.

“Funds raised throughout the year by Caloundra’s parking meters are used for a range of projects in downtown Caloundra, including street activation, public facilities and business support programs.

“During this period, parking officers will continue patrolling downtown Caloundra to address compliance with parking regulations and, in turn, ensure parking availability is optimised during the Christmas holidays.”

On and off street parking is available at various locations throughout Caloundra.

It seems we are in for a long hot and dry summer. So far, we have been fortunate not to have been too badly affected by bushfires in our immediate area, and I certainly hope that continues. However, just in case, it’s best to be prepared.

There are many excellent resources to help you plan your response and I am certainly no expert, so I’ll leave it to them. What I will say though is please, please comply with any fire ban or state of emergency that is in place. Make sure that you check details through the official channels on www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au or the Sunshine Coast Council website.

If you are planning to use any of the National Parks or HQ Plantation areas ensure that you check on the appropriate websites before heading out. If closures are in place, they are for everyone’s safety. Sadly, we know a number of the recent fires on the Sunshine Coast have been deliberately lit, so if you see something suspicious let us know.

For information on current fires the best place is the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) website www.qfes.qld.gov.au or Facebook page where there is a very informative and up-to-date feed.

Home security

With the warmer weather home security can sometimes drop off a little. It’s nice to leave windows and doors open to let in cool night air after a hot day but unfortunately that might not be all you are letting in.

Most thieves are opportunistic and will generally bypass the locked house or car in favour of an easy target. Open doors and windows, unlocked vehicles or keys in easy to access locations all make it more attractive to offenders. Don’t make it easy for them.

It’s been a big year for our local NHW group. Our secretary Maree Anderson and I were lucky enough to go to the state conference to collect our district awards, with Maree then taking out the state award for community member of the year. It really couldn’t go to a more deserving person. Well done Maree.

We have also seen some growth in our group with a sub group forming in Palmview. Thanks Carol for getting that off the ground. Mooloolah has also shown some interest and we have some new faces from there including Michelle who has already been a great help.

We changed our name from Beerwah to Glasshouse Country Neighbourhood Watch late last year to better reflect the area we cover, so it’s great to really see that take shape. Thanks to all the NHW members both the long term and our new faces.

Final thanks

At Beerwah Station we are lucky to work in great communities from Beerburrum to Palmview and we really appreciate the support we get from you – all the hellos, waves and nods, the excited kids at the shops or at the schools and kindergartens when we visit. Thanks to all of you.

A special thanks though goes to our volunteers in policing Vikki and Brian who help with lots of tasks both around the station and in the community, particularly the Blue Light Discos.

Thanks also to the other community members who consistently come and assist at the discos and to the parents for supporting them by allowing the children to attend.

Acclaimed Chilean director Sebastian Lelio ('A Fantastic Woman', 'Disobedience') has done something quite unusual in the film world: he has re-imagined his own highly successful 2013 film 'Gloria'.

His new film, 'Gloria Bell', has been transposed from Santiago to Los Angeles and filmed in English. Gloria Bell is a 50-year-old free-spirited divorcee and mother of two adult children. Following her divorce, she throws herself into the LA nightclub scene, where she enjoys uninhibited dancing and meeting new men. If all that sounds rather trite, it is Gloria's complex character - at once assertive but vulnerable, independent but lonely, living in the moment but bored - which makes this an exceptional film. And it is Julianne Moore's stunning portrayal of Gloria on which the whole film depends. John Turturro plays Arnold, her romantic partner.

Enhanced by relatable characters, strong acting, comedy and music, 'Gloria Bell' is yet another fine example of director Lelio's insight into human nature.

I recently had occasion to use the new long overdue diverging diamond at the Caloundra interchange and while I agree it is certainly an innovative design, I can't help but wonder what planet these civil engineers/road designers have been living on for the past 40 years, because we now have three sets

of traffic light to negotiate to get across the Bruce Highway whereas the old interchange only had one set of lights to contend with.

The article published in GC&M News on December 4 states that the traffic lights will be synchronised in order to achieve free-flowing traffic but I can assure you that at the time of writing this article that is not the case. We got a red light at all three intersections.

Some may consider this a simplistic view but I would have thought that an over and under design would be more beneficial.

It would seem that in this day and age, traffic lights that impede traffic would be the first thing they would want to eliminate in order to keep traffic flowing freely. Clearly the installation of traffic lights was a cost cutting strategy.

It becomes very tiresome listening to bureaucrats and politicians blowing their own trumpets, telling us how wonderful they are and what a fantastic job they are doing, and how much of our money they are spending on upgrading our infrastructure, and then short changing us by installing three sets of traffic lights in a distance of a couple of hundred metres on a new traffic interchange that they tell us will keep traffic flowing.

When politicians start thinking about upgrading our roads, they need to be thinking 20 or 30 years ahead, not just the three years they have been appointed to office. When they start taking a longer view of things for the benefit of the people and not themselves, maybe, just maybe, they might get elected for another term.

Maleny precinct

Keeping abreast of developments on the vast Maleny precinct can be quite a task. Current issues include a proposed hydrotherapy pool, the ecological parkland sub-precinct and recreational open space.

Recently, an application was made to the council for an indoor hydrotherapy pool on the sport and recreation sub-precinct (SRSP) raising a number of concerns.

Under the Maleny Planning Code, precinct developments must comply with the precinct master plan that, consistent with the peerless green space values of the SRSP, designates outdoor not indoor amenities.

The installation of water, waste water and electricity services would cost around $1 million, based on an independent 2018 study.

An access road would cost a further $100,000 due to the unfeasible narrowness of a cheaper route beside the Maleny Trail.

Following overtures from Cr McKay, the owners of a potentially suitable offprecinct site with services, connections and road access have offered it for free. Surely this site should be on the table.

To supplement the Mary Cairncross Reserve, Mayor Jamieson recently announced plans for an ecological parkland on the Landsborough-Maleny Road to include space where people can “picnic, kick a ball, enjoy a walking trail and soak up the great outdoors”.

Splendid as this will be when and if it is funded, we remind the Mayor that the 129 hectare Maleny precinct still lacks generous space where people can “picnic and kick a ball” among other family-friendly pursuits, despite a two-year community campaign to redress this egregious oversight.

We also remind the Mayor, with all respect, that the precinct already includes a beautiful ecological parkland, as it is called in the master plan, comprised of forests, wetlands and trails.

Developed by Unitywater under lease, the parkland is complete save for navigational signage, a council responsibility.

Hinterland Families Peachester celebrates 2019 graduates

By Addison Shaw, school captain Peachester State School farewelled 11 year 6 students last Tuesday with a dinner and presentation. Friends, family and community members gathered to celebrate this significant milestone of primary school. On behalf of the year 6 cohort, I’d like to thank the staff and parent volunteers who helped organise the event. This year’s graduates have certainly enjoyed their time at this wonderful school and a big part of this is because the teachers have always gone above and beyond to ensure we have felt inspired, motivated and valued. Biology excursion to North Stradbroke

In term three of the academic year, 21 Beerwah High School year 11 biology students travelled with their teachers to North Stradbroke Island.

They studied the ecology of the various ecosystems of the island including the rocky shore, sand dunes, mangroves and fresh water lakes.

Students worked in groups to identify and measure the density of organisms living in the environment as well as the abiotic factors within each environment. The data is now being analysed in class to prepare for the assessment pieces they will have in year 12.

Last week in our Dine in Take Out section I suggested that while on holidays it is a great time to hit the road and try some of our great local cafés in Peachester and Mooloolah.

This week it is all about Maleny. There are so many great choices for any time of day to consider. Lately Brownie and I have tried out a few different choices including breakfast at The Tamarind, lunch at The Barrel at Clouds Vineyard, dinner at The Orangery as well as dropping in to try out the cheeses at the newly reopened Maleny Cheese café.

The Tamarind took out an award for its breakfasts earlier this year and it is easy to see why. The food is

wonderful and the contemporary restaurant set up, tranquil location and the local wildlife that drop in for a visit add to the overall experience.

If you haven’t been inside the recently refurbished The Barrel at Clouds Vineyard it is definitely worth going to check out. It will closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day but will be open on Boxing Day. You can try a wine tasting flight or a beer tasting paddle for just $10 and combine it with a share platter, light bites or a scrumptious main, which is what we went for. They also have a kids' menu.

We recently moved from Maleny to Curramore.

The trees and nature were the main factors in making the tree change. As it’s our first time at rural living, issues around water and the threat of bushfires are now certainly on our radar.

In life, people travel along often unaware of certain issues until change occurs. The changing season leading up to Christmas often brings issues that are complex and varied.

My hope and prayer for you is that whatever difficulties you face, may you know the peace and joy of Christmas, specifically the birth of Jesus Christ – God with us.

Plant health is everyone’s business

2020 has been recognised as the United Nation’s International Year of Plant Health.

It’s not about making sure you fertilise your roses regularly but is aimed at raising awareness of the global problems caused by plant pests and diseases.

According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), plants make up 80 per cent of the food we eat and produce 98 per cent of the oxygen we breathe.

The FAO reports that every year up to 40 per cent of global food crops are lost to plant pests and diseases, leading to more than $220 billion agricultural trade losses and leaving millions of people facing hunger and reduced income in poor rural communities.

FAO director-general Qu Dongyu said climate change and human activities were altering ecosystems, reducing biodiversity and creating conditions where pests can thrive.

“At the same time, international travel and trade has tripled in volume in the last decade and can quickly spread pests and diseases around the world causing great damage to native plants and the environment,” he said.

“As with human or animal health, prevention in plant health is better than cure.”

Plant pests and diseases are often impossible to eradicate once established and managing them is time consuming and expensive.

Australian Minister for Agriculture Bridget McKenzie said the theme for the year was ‘Protecting plants, protecting life’ underlining the need for everyone to understand and take seriously their role in protecting Australia’s biosecurity.

“Australia’s plant industries contribute $30 billion to our economy and we enjoy a strong reputation for high quality, safe, clean-and-green produce,” Ms McKenzie said.

“The International Year of Plant Health is an opportunity to highlight that everyone should play their part in protecting our nation’s native and commercial plants from the threat of pests and diseases — from travellers coming to Australia, to farmers monitoring their crops or city dwellers who have a vege patch.”

The bounty of the bush is considerable and a fitting testimony to the management by First Nations people for tens of thousands of years. We are only just recently becoming aware (listening) to benefits of bush tucker and, best of all, bush tucker is good tucker for us and the wildlife!

Bush tucker must-haves that you should plant in your yard include midyim (Austromyrtus dulcis), a great low growing shrub/groundcover with attractive weeping foliage and tasty white berries, and kids (young and old) love them; and lilly pillies (Syzygium spp) are all edible if you are hungry enough but from our local ones the riberry (S Luehmannii) is not only bountiful but tastes good raw and even glaced in a sugar syrup.

Davidson plums (Davidsonia spp), although not strictly local, are spectacular foliage specimens with their large leaves and large beautiful looking plum-like fruit. They are a tad sour but nothing that a few spoons of sugar can’t fix to make a great jam, chutney, sauce or syrup.

Plum pine (Podocarpus elatus) also produce a juicy succulent, plum-like fruit with a pleasant pine taste and, again, fantastic for jams and syrups.

Warrigal greens (Tetragonia tetragonioides) is an easy to grow spinach and we even have a native celery (Apium prostratum).

Last, but not least, we have bunya pine (Araucaria bidwillii), which this part of the world is particularly blessed with, thanks to the management of GubbiGubbi/Kabi-Kabi and Jinibara peoples. These are serious food-producing trees that have and continue to enable great gatherings of people from time immemorial.

Bunya season is almost upon us so keep your eyes out for cones that get blown out of trees before Christmas as these are tender and succulent.

In late January when the mature crop falls boil, bake, mash or grind – so many great ways to cook and prepare!

Barung Landcare Honouring indigenous plant names It’s the Year of Indigenous Languages and Barung nurseries are presenting a project that acknowledges Indigenous names of our local plants.

At our Porters Lane nursery, you’ll find a number of our local plants labelled with Indigenous names.

The Indigenous names we have used are taken directly from 'A Comprehensive Catalogue of Queensland Plants, Both Indigenous and Naturalised’, published in 1912 and written by Frederick Manson Bailey, the colonial botanist from 1881-1915.

Barung cannot verify the accuracy of the plant names or geographic location of the names. Where a plant has several Indigenous names, we have chosen the closest possible location to Maleny. We acknowledge that all tribes and language groups had their own specific naming of plants. Our project only uses names from this historic text. We welcome any insights or advice on local Indigenous names that could enhance the project.

Jow-war Jow-war is an Indigenous name recorded as used by the Stradbroke Island people for the tree Glochidion ferdinandi. Its common name is cheese tree, referring to the shape of the fruits. Jow-war – also known as water gum, button wood and pencil cedar − is a small tree fringing rainforest or growing along creek lines in drier forests. It is an easily grown pioneer species and useful in bush regeneration and natural landscaping. Birds including whiteheaded pigeons, figbirds and king parrots consume the jow-war fruit.

Christmas Time 2019 Operation hamper drop By Sonia Clark Darren McMahon, national director of Your Dream School Programs, flew up from Sydney on Monday, December 9, to pick up generous local donations from IGA Maleny for the Operation Hamper Drop initiative. In partnership with Deb Stewart, Maleny State High School principal, and Rob Outridge, the owner of IGA Maleny, hampers are being packed and given to families over the next few weeks. Rob and other local donors have donated more than 50 hampers to help families in local schools through the program, which supports school chaplaincy services.

Darren said Operation Hamper Drop initially started in 2018 when four schools that were part of the program requested assistance in the way of hampers for families in need during the Christmas period. This quickly went from a project of finding 20 hampers to eventually providing 348 hampers across the program's network of schools and chaplains in NSW, Victoria and South East Queensland. Due to many schools missing out last year, Darren said

the aim nationally was to provide 1,000 hampers this year to the network of 200 schools.

“Your Dream School Programs has been operating since 2007 and is different to other school chaplaincy providers. This combined with the generosity of IGA Maleny, owned by Rob Outridge, and the support of Deb Stewart, who has given us space to pack the hampers at Maleny State High School, our goal of providing schools around the Sunshine Coast with Christmas hampers for families needing a little support this Christmas has become a reality,” Darren said.

Your Dream School Programs employs chaplains at Maleny State High School, Glass House Mountains State School and Glenview State School, which form part of a network of 200 schools that are providing donated hampers to families in their school communities.

Special thanks to Australia Zoo and the Rotary Club Hannah of the Glass House Mountains for the two generous family passes and the Beerwah High School P&C for an Entertainment Book, which made great raffle prizes.

Our winners were Jodie and her family who will be able to head along to Australia Zoo with their family pass plus Madagascar experience. Hannah was our second prize winner receiving an Australia Zoo family pass plus $100 food voucher and Bonny, our third prize 32

Is there a Santa Claus

In 1897, on the advice of her father, eightyear-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a short, inquisitive letter to the editor of New York’s now defunct newspaper 'The Sun', in which she sought confirmation of the existence pf Santa Claus.

The paper’s editor, Francis P Church, replied to Virginia’s letter by way of an editorial titled: 'Is there a Santa Claus?', which went on to become and, in fact, remains the most reprinted English language editorial in history. It has since spawned numerous adaptations.

Virginia went on to become a teacher and as a result of her innocent question received fan mail for much of her life. She died in 1971 aged 81.

Dear Editor I am eight years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says "If you see it in The Sun it’s so". Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.

Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight.

The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus? You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see.

Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn?

Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, not even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond.

Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, VIRGINIA, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Surfcity Darts Association and The Crusaders are holding a huge Christmas raffle to raise funds for Autism Australia this Friday night, December 20 at the new Surfcity Darts hall located at 899 Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains (old Scout hall).

There will be more than 50 prizes in a multi-draw raffle, such as meat trays, cooling fan, dart shirt, fruit trays and many more prizes donated by local businesses.

Members of the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Community Church have been busy gathering food items, personal items and special treats for their annual Baskets of Love outreach event.

The church will fill 17 washing baskets with goods for people and families doing it tough over the Christmas period. These will be distributed through St Vinnies and Morris House Neighbourhood Centre.

It’s time for some school holiday fun with loads of things to do at the library including activity days, book-themed craft activities, 'Treehouse' story creations, stop-go animation and more. Older kids can delve into The IQube, a set of app-enabled blocks that explores the world of electricity and circuits as well exploring Minecraft fun where kids can create their favourite characters using paper engineering, sewing and collaging techniques.

There are also daily all-age scavenger hunts that run for the duration of the school holidays at all local libraries. Sport Maleny Bowls Club

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Brenda Briese It was goodbye 2019 last Thursday, December 12 at our last ladies’ competition for the year.

As usual we finished the year with a fun day.

Most of the ladies were dressed in their best Christmas outfits and decorated the golf carts.

The competition was a nine-hole, four-person Ambrose with a twist. This involved fun holes creating lots of laughter and fun.

Winners were Vikki Bartel, Helen Lewis, Heather Coyle and Barb Whitfield. The runners-up were Lyn Steele, Gail Gundry, Ruth Parish and Robyn Taylor. Second runners-up were Lesley Eggleston, Mavis Brimelow, Val Turner and Lyn Nichols. Contributed by Graeme Glover What a great year we have had with increased participation in our sport as well as the opportunity to become a focal point for many locals looking for some fun on a Wednesday evening.

Our major event would have to be the continued success of our Wednesday bare foot bowls and barbeque. Thanks to Miles Allen for his contribution to our club of coordinating the evening and making sure everyone gets a game.

Jim Weidman has been the main person for our monthly pairs and the increased participation by local bowlers has been outstanding. Thank you to all who have supported either of these events.

Friday scroungers continue to be a popular format for individual bowlers who take advantage of the handicap system to create close contests each week.

After this week the club will have a break and I must say a big thank you to our ever-present volunteers. Your time and expertise creates so many opportunities for lots of people in our communities. Thank you one and all and from the Maleny Bowls Club board. Have a great festive season. Looking forward to 2020.

Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, December 11: The club Christmas party was a fantastic morning of fun, with 23 members enjoying a game of scroungers that was cut short due to the heat. Best scrounger of the day was Jill Kirchheiner with 76 with Rob Scullion on 65. All in good fun. Morning tea was scrumptious, with lots of raffles and Christmas gifts galore to end 2019 Wednesday bowls. Merry Christmas to everyone and our first Wednesday back is February 5.

Thursday, December 12: Winners of the day were Jenny Hobson and Di Garland with two wins + 36. Runner up winners of the losers were Darryl Goschnick and Lindsay Henderson with + 16 in the second game. Lucky draw went to Doug Sweedman and Kevin Cook. Lessons for Beginners to Advanced

Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Ken Barker, Donna Manning, Kath Smith and Sally Adams allowed themselves to be persuaded out of a pleasant afternoon of play on Thursday, December 5 because it seemed too hot. In reality it was quite pleasant on the lawn with a balmy south-easterley. Nonetheless they convened a loquacious cuppa and left the lawn untouched.

By eight on Saturday morning, December 7, the consensus of people on the lawn was that it was again too hot to play. Nevertheless, a training match was begun with Wallace Roy and Ken playing against Sarah Widin and Vince Carbery.

When a prospective new member arrived, Vince showed him the ropes to hoop six while the others played on until 9am when the heat became oppressive and all play was abandoned.

Sunday, December 8 and cooler weather meant a pleasant game ensued on lawn one. Nick Cram and Kath teamed up against Ken. Kath made a nice start but Ken, with a couple of lucky breaks, ended up ahead 17-9.

Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10 am on Saturdays These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
