ow – we are just putting our 48th and final edition of GCNews to bed for the year and I have been thinking how fortunate we are to have such an amazing bunch of staff, advertisers and enthusiastic community members to share our working year with.

Once this edition hits the streets, GCNews will take a break for three weeks. During this time our office will be closed and there won’t be another paper delivered until Wednesday, January 16.

I know that every year a small group of you completely block from your mind that this has been happening for the last 28 years and you will leave us harsh messages on our answering machine, along the lines of “Why wasn’t my paper delivered?”

National award goes to local artist Local artist Scott Breton was awarded the prestigious $50,000 A.M.E Bale Travelling Art Scholarship, funded by the Alice Marian Ellen Bale Art Foundation Trust, at a ceremony in Melbourne recently.

The prize is Australia’s premier award for traditional realism and figurative art and is awarded to fund overseas travel and artistic study.

A.M.E. Bale was born in Melbourne in 1875 and studied art under Frederick McCubbin.

She developed a reputation as a fine artist who distinguished herself particularly as one of Australia’s pre-eminent flower and still life painters of the early 20th century.

She established the A.M.E. Bale Travelling Scholarship and Art Prize through her will to support Australian artists in perpetuity.

Scott, who grew up in Peachester, plans to use the scholarship to tour galleries and study in Europe, Russia and America.

From a young age, Scott was focused on drawing and, at the age of 16, was tutored by master draftsman and painter David Paulson.

However, it took the completion of a science degree as well as a subsequent mature age carpentry apprenticeship for Scott to realise that art was his calling in life.

Following this, Scott undertook study at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney, where he met fellow student Ryan Daffurn.

Scott, Ryan and three other artists formed the Salisbury Studios Queensland Incorporated complex, where he, Ryan and fellow artist Nick Leavey created an independent art school called Atelier Art Classes, teaching traditional artistic fundamentals, particularly drawing.

The school recently held its inaugural end of year exhibition at The Royal Queensland Art Society Gallery in Petrie Terrace.

Mooloolah Grapic Design student talent recognised Sunshine Coast TAFE graphic design students continue to reap the rewards of their training by receiving seven national awards at the 2012 Southern Cross Packaging Design Awards.

TAFE graphic design teacher Lyndal Chase said the institute was extremely proud of the success of the students, most of whom had worked freelance or part time throughout their course.

Farm composting project launched A local Glasshouse Country farmer has joined four others from the broader region to begin trialling the combined use of compost and nitrogen fixing bacteria (called Twin N) on their crops to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to improve yields.

Funded by the Australian Government’s Carbon Farming Initiative, the three-year project was formally launched last Wednesday at Brett Newell’s macadamia farm on Clarkes Road, Beerwah.

The project involves diverting organic residues from council landfill and other sources to reduce methane emissions from landfills, whilst utilising a valuable renewable resource.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is responsible for about 70 per cent of Sunshine Coast Council’s greenhouse gas emissions and carbon tax liabilities.

When composted and applied to crops, and with the addition of a special microbial bio-fertiliser product called ‘Twin N’ which provides bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen for plants to use, the end product can reduce the use of synthetic fertilisers and enhance root and plant growth.

Facilitated by SEQ Catchments, the project brings together experts and practitioners from a variety of fields. Key partners include individual cane, macadamia and olive producers, Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Suncoast Gold Macadamias, The Organic Force, Mapleton

SEQ Catchments Community Partnership Manager for the Sunshine Coast, Susie Chapman, who is coordinating the project, said that the strong collaboration is bringing together a wealth of experience and knowledge.

“A key challenge is getting suitable compost and mulch products and quantities for different crop requirements and soil conditions,” she said.

“The benefits from using enhanced compost include increased productivity, improved soil health, enhanced water quality in our catchments and reduced disease pressure.”

capacity against the impacts of climate variability and change,” she said.

Local macadamia grower Brett Newell said that he is pleased to be involved in the project.

“I’m fascinated by soil and its intricacies, and look forward to, through the use of the enhanced compost, a return to a more microbial system of farming, where we look after the soil and feed the bugs that in turn feed the trees.

“Hopefully, the project will allow me to improve my sustainable farming practices, while receiving all the production benefits that the compost and Twin N will bring,” he said.

Beerwah’s Daisy Bradford is one of 20 University of the Sunshine Coast Nursing Science students who headed off Tanzania last Friday to help bring smiles to the faces of orphaned children at Christmas.

USC teamed up with Buderim’s own version of Santa’s workshop to deliver handcrafted wooden toys to the children at Upendo Orphanage in Moshi.

The toys have been made by volunteers from the Buderim Men’s Shed. Its coordinator, Norm Thursby, said the group’s toymakers made about 800 toys every year for disadvantaged children.

“When Leonie Williams from USC told us that the only toys that the children in the hospitals played with were inflated rubber gloves that volunteers supplied, we were only too happy to help out,” he said.

“Because the availability of toys over there is zero, anything is better than nothing, so we are making basic toys – things like blocks and small trucks.”

USC Senior Lecturer in Nursing Dr Leonie Williams said the students, aged 19 to 53, were looking forward to seeing the children’s reactions on Christmas Day. She said the four-week trip to Tanzania would include practising in hospitals and health centres in the Mount Kilimanjaro region.

The clinical placements will give students an insight into the tough lives and working conditions in an underdeveloped nation.

“The practicums are a life-changing event for many students,” Dr Williams said.

“This type of work prepares students for disaster relief and gives them an understanding of the hardships should they choose to work in a thirdworld country.”

Dr Williams said participating students were required to be vaccinated for diseases including yellow fever, cholera and typhoid fever prior to leaving Australia.

“There are many diseases over there that we are not familiar with,” she said.

“We don’t see children with malaria here, or the level of gastroenteritis, or children with HIV. So we learn about those things from them, and what they learn from us is nursing best practice.”

The life of a local government councillor can be full of pomp and ceremony … and then sometimes they get to open a dunny.

So it was for Cr Rick Baberowski last week, when he announced on-site that the new toilet block at Mill Park on Simpson Street in Beerwah was now open.

The playground and dog exercise park users have been eagerly awaiting this day, with the facility having been almost completed and behind safety fencing for many months.

The toilet block includes two unisex toilets as well as a wheel chair accessible toilet and parents’ facilities, and will be opened early each morning and locked each night.

To fancy-up the public loo, a decorative privacy screen has been installed, featuring a cut-out flower pattern.

The pattern has been cleverly made to represent a local threatened plant species – the Mount Beerwah Mallee (or Eucalyptus kabiana).

Community News Heaps of holiday fun

Contributed by Belinda Mewes Mooloolah Vacation Care, situated on the Mooloolah State School grounds near the pool, once again has fantastic opportunities for children over the Xmas Holidays.

This time we are going to see a Movie in 3D, ‘Rise of the Guardians’.

There are plenty of craft activities including making Flicker LIghts and cooking for Christmas as well as parties and pool time.

In January our planned excursions are to Aussie World, where we will scream, laugh and ride all day.

There will also be ice skating along with pizza and a Slushie, in Caloundra, playing in the water fountains at Kings Beach and then later on in January, to another movie, yet to be decided, at Caloundra Cinemas.

We also have computers, and Wii games and a big flat screen TV with ‘Just Dance Competitions’ running hot all holidays.

We take enrolments at any time, and you will probably be entitled to government rebates which will reduce your daily fees.

We welcome any new children into the service and don’t be surprised if when you come to pick them up to go home, that they won’t want to leave.

Contributed by Fiona Gray We would like to thank all of the businesses who supported us with our Pre-Christmas Raffle, including the Big Mower, Australia Zoo, Aussie World, Glasshouse Tavern, The children loved the Hogs Breath Cafe, party food Beerwah Cycles, Beerwah Discount Tyres, Katrina's Beauty Works, Skidaddle, Beerwah Hotel, Palmer Resort Coolum, Guitar Exchange, Barry Family Butchers, Miche Handbags and Tupperware.

We sold $1,112 worth of tickets and the winners were: First prize – Erin Gray, second prize – Amanda Mills, third prize – Aston Morgan, along with 16 running draw prizes.

Now we are really excited that in the summer holidays we can start the work. So, watch this space and see the transformation take place. We will keep you posted on our future works and events. Also, a big thank you goes to Peachester Saw Mill for helping out when we were removing all our golden canes.

Last Saturday we had our Christmas party for all the families at Peachester Playgroup. It was lots of fun, with games, songs and stories all about Christmas, plus lots of lovely party food. It was also a graduation for all our children going on to preschool, and our best wishes go to those children. And, of course, best of all was the visit from Santa, who had a present for all the children.

Contributed by Jenny Morris On Wednesday, December 5, we had our Christmas break-up at Pelican Waters. At around 10.00am we boarded the Caloundra Cruise boat with Captain Bob at the helm and he took us for a leisurely cruise to discover the beauty of Pumicestone Passage and the history and wildlife of Caloundra.

Thirty of our members with their guests enjoyed the 90 minute cruise before partaking of our meal at the Pelican Waters Tavern. This was a great social event with raffles and Kris Kringle. A great time was had by all.

There will be a break now for Christmas and New Year celebrations, returning in January with a morning tea at the Glasshouse Lookout Café on Wednesday, January 2, at 10.00am. Please let Kym or Janet know if you can attend on 5438 7966 or 5495 9222.

Our first luncheon meeting will be held at the Glasshouse Sports Club on January 16, and if you can’t attend please contact Margaret on 5435 2172. The New Committee for 2013 will be inducted at this (our AGM) meeting. We are still in need of a secretary for the 2013 year.

Anyone interested in joining View Club can phone Kym or Janet who will be pleased to supply further information about the club.

Council offices will close at 2pm on Monday 24 December, and will remain closed on all public holidays. This includes Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 December 2012 and Tuesday 1 January 2013.

Council offices and libraries will be open for business on Thursday 27, Friday 28 and Monday 31 December 2012.

Mooloolah Community Centre 2012 wrap up This year the Centre saw the Op shop increase its trading hours due to popular demand, attract more volunteers and also provide a social outlet for the local community. It achieved its goal of providing a welcoming environment that both serves the local community and also provides for those in need. A big thank you to all the ladies who volunteer their time to assist and run the Op shop.

The Community Centre ran a number of successful programs and events this year.

Some of the programs included Broadband for Seniors, Community Carebus, Op Shop assisted aid, and the Mooloolah Scouts forum. We were also fortunate to be the recipients of a number of grants, including the Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy Community Grant and the Sunshine Coast Council Community Grants program.

View clubs are a valued part of the Smith Family which is a national, independent children’s charity. The Smith Family is committed to helping disadvantaged Australian children by unlocking opportunities through education and support.

Community Family Fun Day. The Community Garden has been growing well and is running a great new program teaching local school kids to grow salads items, vegetables and herbs.

The Centre is auspiced by the Mooloolah Valley Community Association which in turn has been involved in three successful Mooloolah Performing our Arts Off events. These fun community events have highlighted emerging and existing local musical and performance talents. The Mooloolah Valley Community Association has also been closely involved in the preparations of the Mooloolah 150 celebrations for 2013.

Regular community barbeques have provided a great social get together for both new and longer term community members. Thanks to all of the local musicians who contributed their wonderful live music to these barbecues throughout the year and also a huge thanks to all the volunteers who help make the events possible.

Beerwah’s best seafood just got better Beerwah couldn’t be described as coastal but with Hinterland Seafood’s new premises you will be able to head out for a great meal of fish and chips and not have to make the drive to the beach.

Todd and Kara have recently moved Hinterland Seafood further down Peachester Road, and it is now located in the Turner Park Shopping Village,

Todd said the shop had been totally refitted and they were really pleased with how great and totally fresh and modern it looks.

“We have been able to redesign the premises to suit our needs and have been able to expand the preparation area at the front of the shop where we make up a great range of burgers and fresh salads,” he said.

While the store may look different, they haven’t made any changes to their small dedicated team of staff who pride themselves on providing friendly service to all their customers.

We visited Mount Ngungun, Mount Beerwah, the lookout and Mount Tibrogargan before heading up to the Maleny Botanic Gardens where we were treated to a lovely Devonshire tea and tour of the gardens.

Grafx Group members were treated to an impressive demonstration of how to make an animated Christmas Card in Powerpoint by Steph and Madison at the end of year celebration. Using some simple tools and a bit of knowhow they showed how easy it is to add animated clip-art that is free and readily available on the internet.

To those of us who have come lately to the wonders of creating our own e-cards and Powerpoint shows it is delightful to see how youngsters such as Steph and Madison are so confident with this medium and can produce such sophisticated results. Artwork below by Chris Bell

During the year when they put the call out to local businesses for support for their festival, they received a Riprider 360°, E-reader, a huge chocolate and a barbecue for our silent auction, which they were thankful for.

Landsborough students can do anything!

The school produced and performed the musical ‘Rock Toyz’ to delighted audiences on December 6.

‘Rock Toyz’ is a Cinderella story with a rock and roll twist about the adventures of toys from the attic who meet the rats from the cellar.

It tells the story of a sad little doll who finds love, family and friends.

The performance contained vibrant dance and energetic music. Every student from Prep to Year 7 was involved in the show. Students have been rehearsing for months, singing, dancing and practicing their lines to ensure a polished performance. The audience was dazzled by the colourful costumes and rock and roll music. A highlight of the performance was the grand finale where all students from Prep to Year 7 joined together to sing the song ‘Rock Toyz’. This was the first time Landsborough State School has put together such a large production. Thanks to all the students, staff, parents and community members who helped make the event such a success.

Letter sent to Council

I wish to comment on the facilities currently installed at Corella Park in Landsborough, adjacent to my property. The facilities which are currently installed in the park are for the use of children probably up to the ages of 10 years.

This park is very popular with older children who have taken to creating their own swing attached to the tree within the play area, and they all have a great time there.

Unfortunately Council staff have now removed this swing on at least three occasions and they have also removed the tree limbs to which their swing was attached (I realise the staff are only doing their job so I am not criticising them).

I, for one, am not in favour of the ‘Nanny State’ which cringes every time a child climbs a tree or plays actively with the ‘potential’ of hurting him/ herself.

All the local kids use this park continually and have a great time rather than wandering the streets causing other mischief.

Please consider the older children and ask for community comment regarding the provision of some additional equipment for their enjoyment.

Do you children attend school at Kawana?

I live in Beerwah and my son is attending Kawana State College primary school, this means catching the Sun Bus at 7.00am in Landsborough and getting home after 5.00pm.

I have contacted Glasshouse Country Coaches and they are happy to trial running a bus next year to Kawana. Being that the school is a Prep to Year 12 school they are happy to take any child going there.

However I am finding it very difficult to see how many people are interested.

I so far have four children but need a few more.

Thanks for wonderful service A big thank you for wonderful customer service to Dan and Carolyn Moroney from Domestic Water Cartage. Not only did Dan help out for three hours whilst we were trying to relocate a water tank – sacrificing time on the road, he again came to our rescue when we ran dry a few weeks later and no-one could deliver water for three to four days. Dan offered a last run before he packed up for the day – even though he had been on the road since 4.00am that day. As long as Dan has his truck on the road he will be our water man! We wish you a blessed Christmas Dan and Carolyn.

Community Christmas event On Saturday, December 1 the Beerburrum School of Arts Committee and Beerburrum State School Acting Principal Mr Harvey, teachers and parents held really great Beerburrum community Christmas event.

Thanks must go to the many volunteers (too many to name) who helped make the event a huge success. Special thanks to the Glass House Rural Fire Brigade who delivered Santa (Kevin), Mrs Clause (Susan) and Elves Kristy and Joel.

Live entertainment was provided by five piece band ‘Super Dads’ as well singing and dancing performances by students from Beerburrum State School.

Children enjoyed being taught cake decorating, craft making and how to juggle. They also enjoyed the jumping castle and snow machine

and not to forget receiving presents from Santa.

A very extensive afternoon tea was served thanks to the volunteers again. Photographer Coral took over 700 photos at the event.

Thank you to all of the Sponsors who generously donated prizes for the 70-draw mega raffle. All sponsors were publicly advertised before and during the event and will be presented with a Certificate of Appreciation along with all donors and volunteers. All raffle prize winners have been notified.

The event was successful also because of community support and Glasshouse Country News promoting it.

Thank you to Andrew Powell for taking the time out of his busy schedule to attend. Sorry Andrew, you didn't win a prize in the raffle, but thanks for supporting it.

The event was thought of and planned by Dee Pincott-Miller (Hall Committee President). Thank you Dee, we all appreciate your talent.

Council’s tips and waste facilities will be closed to the public on Christmas Day and will otherwise be open at the regular operating times.

Council’s regular waste collection will operate as usual during the holiday period. It’s actually a busy time for lost animal shelters so if you see a stray dog or a dog acting aggressively please report it to council on 5475 7272.

And make sure your pet’s microchip details are up-to-date with your microchip register to help council, the vet or lost animal shelter to reunite you quickly and easily.

Draft Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme

I’ve represented the wishes of the Glasshouse Chambers of Commerce regarding an extension to the submission period for the Draft Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme to council. An extension is not likely to receive support due to the extensive consultation undertaken over eight weeks by council staff. I must say they have done a remarkable job getting out into the community with information and displays about the draft scheme.

A little planting could offset the added food that we generally consume over the Christmas break; in addition a small tree plant is a great activity to get everyone out of the house for a short period of time!

Christmas is a season full of all kinds of traditions When John and I started our family we began creating our Christmas traditions. The Christmas tree always goes up early in the season. John is always the chief ‘present giver’ on Christmas Day, reading each label and handing out the gifts one by one; with all the kids (and big kids!) anxiously waiting for their name to be read out next. Christmas cards are displayed on the piano, and we listen to Jim Reeves Christmas carols on Christmas Eve whilst putting the finishing touches on Christmas presents. Christmas goodies are found in abundance in cookie jars and platters scattered around the house, as over the years we became known as something of an open house for friends who had no-one to share their Christmas with. We always enjoy the extra company.

While Christmas can truly be 'the most wonderful time of the year' for some... it can also be the most painful time of the year for others...the joy of Christmas traditions can be overshadowed by loneliness and hopelessness.

At this time of year my heart always goes out to the couple who have just divorced, or that family who have lost a parent, or worse a child; the loved one missing from this year's Christmas photo...people who are homeless, sick children in hospital, or those who have been laid off work unexpectedly and who are constantly reminded by customer-driven marketing that they won't have anything to give to their children or family this Christmas.

So with Christmas right around the corner, what better time than now to start thinking about how we can be a blessing to someone outside of own little world. Whether that means collecting canned goods for the hungry, selecting names from the K-Mart Wishing Tree, or supporting your local church community outreach; the ability to give generously is a gift.

But don't be limited in your view of what a gift can be.

Gifts can come in boxes wrapped in the prettiest paper and curliest bows - and those gifts can bring a lot of joy and happiness; but there are other gifts too that bring joy - giving of your time, mending a broken relationship, showing love where it may not be received or returned, celebrating someone's success, a timely phone call or text...there are all sorts of gifts which reflect God's generosity.

The Three Gifts of Christmas

Christ, food for the soul

Throughout the Bible there are hidden narratives that explain the gospel of Christ and how we are to respond to the salvation story, the Christmas story is no exception. It is no accident that the three gifts that the wise men brought Jesus have a significant meaning behind them. Firstly, the gift of gold was fitting for the one who is the King of kings. The second gift was Frankincense. This is an expensive resin derived from the Boswellia tree and was used by the priests in the temple of the Lord as an incense used to symbolise the prayers of the priest on behalf of the people as they rise up to heaven where they are received by God. Jesus is known as the great high priest who intercedes for all people before God. And finally, there was Myrrh. This was both an antiseptic ointment for healing (something Jesus was an expert in) but it was also an embalming material used of the dead before they were buried in a tomb. The wise men knew of the sacrifice that would one day be made by this child to take away the sins of many. How do we respond to this message? Is Christ the king of your life? Will you allow him to intercede for you as your great high priest before God? And finally will you allow his sacrifice to renew your life and remove the record of your sin to present you without fault to the Father? May these truths ring true to us as we celebrate together this Christmas.

I’m sure that you like me will probably over indulge in some way this Christmas, it’s difficult not to with the endless rounds of break-up’s, Christmas gatherings and catch-up’s with relatives and friends.

Biblically, the image of food, our daily bread, also reminds us to expect the necessary inspiration and strength—in other words, our nourishment— for our lives as Christians from the Lord. Just as we try to be careful about what kind of food we eat, so we should be choosy about what food we give our spirit.

For Christians, Christmas is about Christ's coming in the next few weeks in a new, powerful, and much needed way. Christmas is not just a remembrance; it’s a present reality. Therefore, Christmas will soon be either one of the best things that has ever happened to us or a sadly missed opportunity.

Watermelon Christmas

As a child, Christmas was watermelon with my brothers and cousins in the backyard. Teenage years saw Christmas at Brooms Head camping on the foreshore with family and friends, and of course watermelon. One Christmas in my twenties I dated the young woman who was eventually to be my wife; and yes there was watermelon, but this time Marion showed her interest by throwing the watermelon skin at me. Now we spend Christmas with our children and grandchildren. It is a special time for us.

Christmas is a happy time for our family. We take inspiration from the nativity story. Special little family. Special story. Special hope as God sent His Son to provide salvation for lost humanity. Probably something to think about at other times of the year. Yes there’ll be watermelon; but did you notice you can buy watermelon any day of the year now.

What is important… really

In the weeks leading up to writing this Christmas message I was considering what to write about. Then during that same week my wife and I were hit with something that we weren’t prepared for. Our youngest son ended up in hospital on a breathing machine due to an acute illness. The staff were amazing and praise God; within a week our son pulled through and was back to his normal cheeky self. It was uncanny how clear everything became in the midst of this crisis though. For me, praying to God and doing everything in my power to keep him safe was at the forefront of my mind. My family became my single focus. Nothing else mattered…

So I guess the Christmas message that I wanted to bring this year is a reminder to all of us to remember what is truly important… at the end of the day all that really matters is our relationship with God and our family and friends.

Then many people will thank God when we deliver your gift’. Generosity has nothing to do with our money; generosity is all about what we make room for. In my family we make room by providing the friend with nowhere to go a spare bed and an extra place at our table. It might look different in your family but the heart of it is the same. Generosity is not about the extra, the leftovers, or surplus.

Generosity happens when we say, "I was going to have this, I was planning to use it on me, but I want you to have it instead." Generosity comes out of our own comfort and our willingness to make a little room. Start with what you have in your hands and make a little extra. Ask God to bless it and you'll be amazed at what He does!

So we see harassed parents, cranky yet excited children, people with high and unreal expectations as families unite from around the world.

Can I encourage you to make a conscious decision to slow down, to be content with a less than perfect Christmas. Let us offer ourselves to each other as God gave himself to us afresh on that first Christmas Day. A poor mother and son pondered what they could give each other. She found a ball of wool and knitted socks, but the son had difficulty finding a gift so on Christmas morning his mother looked under their empty tree and found her son wrapped in an old newspaper as a gift for her. He gave all he had...himself. God's gift to us is not just a sweet baby but the God/Man Jesus who showed us how to live. God gives himself but we must receive him.

Many people see something scandalous and offensive in the Bible.

There is a lot of scandal in the Christmas message. It’s the story of invasion, of an unmarried mother and the slaughter of innocent children. But above all it’s the story of the Creator who came and lived among us as one of us.

Tragically we have reduced the Christmas message to a nice children’s play.

Christmas lights bring much festiveness to our trees and homes, shops and towns. But it won’t be long before they’re put away for another year.

In Isaiah 9:2 we read of a light that shines in the darkness and keeps on shining. This isn’t a light that will be packed away after Christmas.

Jesus is the child born for us, the son given to us, who brings light and hope into the dark areas of our lives. He has come to shine, not just for a season, but at every time and in every situation.

Enjoy the Christmas lights and even when they’re packed away remember the light of Jesus that keeps on shining. Remember his promise: ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness’ (John 8:12).

When we think of peace, different things come to mind. For some, a beach holiday, others a perfect sunrise or mountaintop view, and for others a moment of quiet over a coffee while the kids are otherwise occupied.

Jesus said ‘I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid…’ John 14:27 Peace is not the absence of conflict or challenges. Peace is the person, Jesus! He is our peace. He is our solution. Peace and Goodwill to all.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Protecting and preserving our Local Gliders A recent article on Wattles indicated their value as a species for wildlife and, in particular, for gliders. We are fortunate to have a number of these delightful mammals living in our local area, though since they are nocturnal, we may rarely see them.

Local gliders include the tiny Feathertail Glider, no larger than a mouse, the rat-sized Sugar or Squirrel Gliders and the larger possum-sized Greater Glider. All gliders have a membrane stretching between their front and back limbs which enables them to glide from great heights through the trees.

Unfortunately, clearing of old growth trees has reduced the potential homes for gliders as they need a number of tree hollows to survive.

We can encourage these delightful creatures to our gardens by planting appropriate food species, maintaining old growth trees, or providing fauna boxes as alternative homes. Gliders require Eucalypt or Wattle sap, gum leaves, or nectar as food source.

On occasion you may find a fluffy tail left around your garden overnight, indicating the demise of a glider. Cats, either feral or domestic, are thought to be responsible, though the less common Powerful Owl is another possible predator. Please lock up your cats at night.

If you are lucky enough to see a glider on your property you will instantly fall in love with these delightful little marsupials.

If you venture out at night with a torch, particularly early evening, you may be lucky enough to spot a glider in search of food. Even roadside trees provide a valuable food or nesting source for them.

Never shine a torch directly on any wildlife. It is best to cover the light with a small piece of red cellophane so they are not dazzled.

R is for Rondeletia/Rogiera

Propagating, growing and maintaining plants is a wonderful and stimulating pastime. Apparently it keeps you young. But there is a downside.

Taxonomy, the classification and naming of living things, was sent to confuse us. In particular, I refer to the old fashioned plant known as Rondeletia amoena or Mexican Viburnum.

Many who grew up in Queensland would remember it from their grandparents’ garden, where it could often be found wildly growing in a tangled mess.

While this plant is commonly referred to as Rondeletia and will be found in most books and nurseries as such, it is officially Rogiera amoena. The genus Rogiera has 15 species and Rondeletia has about 150 species. Most species of both originate from Central America and are shrubs or herbaceous perennials.

Mexican Viburnum is a scrambling shrub to about three metres tall which flowers late winter and into spring.

The clusters of small pink blooms almost entirely cover the bush and give Rogiera amoena off a heavenly scent. They are rich in nectar and attract birds and butterflies. Plant it in full sun or part shade in a hole prepared with plenty of organic matter. Top this up on an annual basis.

If it is grown in part shade it will develop a leggy habit.

The plant is drought tolerant. Ensure adequate water during the flowering season to help the blooms last longer. It is, however, frost tender and should be grown in a protected part of the garden if your area is prone to frosts. It has no major pest or disease issues.

Cut back hard after flowering to develop a compact plant for the following year. Subsequent tip pruning until mid-Autumn will give you more flowers.

Occasionally Rogiera/Rondeletia amoena can be picked up at the markets or a nursery. Don't fret if you are having trouble finding one. Propagation is easy by layering or taking semi-hardwood cuttings after flowering.

To confuse you even more, there is also a fish named Rondeletia loricata or Red Mouth Whalefish. While this fish would have a distinct odour if planted in the garden, the smell is sure to be short lived.

These plants have probably gone out of favour as they require heavy annual pruning and are not really suited to a low maintenance garden, though if you are trying for a rambling cottage garden or a Queensland heritage garden, you couldn't go past a Rogiera/Rondeletia.

Growing up to four metres high by three metres wide, it makes a highly ornamental screening plant due to its dense foliage.

Throughout the year it is covered in soft apricot pink new growth and gorgeous dainty pink flowers. It also makes a good pot specimen for several years. It is best grown in full sun in a moist well-drained position.
