ell it is that time of year again, when local photographers once again take time out to choose an interesting view of the Glass House Mountains, then get their cameras out and start clicking for the Rotary Calendar Photographic Competition.

Over the years, Rotary have kept the photographers on their toes with a range of other elements that also needed to be included in these views, from buildings, farm equipment, animals, flora and the hardest one to date ‘Emergency Services’.

Well the good news is this year they have kept it simple with the theme being ‘The Beauty of the Glass House Mountains’!

Well actually the challenge may be that individuals can only enter two images, some photographers may find it difficult to limit their entries to two capturing the ‘beauty’ of the mountains.

I for one am really looking forward to seeing the entries – as I know that even though I have been doing this job now for over 10 years, I still discover unusual and interesting spots to view them from.

So the challenge has been put out there – entries close on August 9, if you would like to know more check out their ad on page 12, and happy snapping.

Local News Two mighty men-at-arms Have you ever heard of Achilles and Ajax?

We are not talking about Brad Pitt in the ‘Troy’ movie or a well-known cleaning product. These were two mighty warriors, known throughout the ancient world for their battle prowess. Their idea of fun was picking fights, wrestling and chariot races.

In the Maleny Singers’ June production of Offenbach’s ‘La Belle Hélène’, these legendary characters are portrayed by Christopher Ward and Ian McMaster, respectively. They form part of the quartet of kings, who are hailed as ‘mighty kings of Greece’ by the people of Sparta, as they visit the court of King Menelaus and his beautiful Queen, Helen.

Described as ‘half-wit heroes’, they certainly show more brawn than brains. Throughout the show, they add to the colour and comedy, getting involved in card games, beach ball games and, of course, ‘Olympic Games’.

These ‘mighty men-at-arms’ form just part of the

lively line-up of characters in this fun and flirty frolic through the pages of ancient Greek history.

You have never heard the story of Helen and Paris told like this before. Come and enjoy the fun!

The season opens at the Maleny Community Centre on Saturday, June 20 at 6.30pm, with table bookings available for both Opening Night and the following Friday, June 26, also at 6.30pm. Cheese making lowdown

Drink drivers targeted!

Now that the Maleny Show has finished for the year, GC&M news thought we’d go behind the scenes and find out a little more about one of the show sections that is growing in popularity - the ‘Cheese making ‘(now expanded to include Pesto, Pate and Tapenade) competition.

Supervising Steward Lyn Bromet has been an integral part of setting up this competition section which has been running at the Maleny Show for the last 14 years.

Lyn and her family moved to Maleny 24 years ago to explore the possibilities a rural lifestyle would offer.

Being interested in alternative options for farming, and in 1999 with a surplus of milk from her farm, Lyn decided to do a cheese making course offered by the Department of Primary Industries.

The course catered for commercial operators, home economics teachers, and people who ran restaurants. Lyn says she “just wanted to use up all the extra milk I had!”

Following the dairy industry deregulation, and seeing the success of cheese making at rural shows such as Gatton and Nanango; Lyn approached the Maleny Show Society about including a competition section which she offered to organise.

Starting in 2001 with just nine entries, this year’s event saw 68 entries with 12 participants in the competition. In 2005, Lyn set up the ‘Wine and Cheese tasting night’ to coincide with the show.

This year the overall champion with points for body, flavour and condition, was Maleny Cheese with their passionfruit yogurt. Reserve champion was awarded to Glasshouse Christian College Agricultural School for their ‘excellent’ white mould ripened cheese.

This year three Hinterland schools entered the competition. Montville school entered pesto, as well as handmade butter from students in Years 2 and 4. Beerwah State High School entered a number of white mould ripened cheeses and Glasshouse Christian College also entered student made pesto, ricotta and butter.

From Monday, June 15 Beerwah Police are hosting a week long operation targeting drink driving offences. The operation will be strengthened with additional police officers supplied from neighbouring Kawana Waters and Caloundra Divisions.

The focus of this operation is to reduce the incidents of road trauma in the Sunshine Coast District by targeting drink drivers.

Wednesday night will give many cause to celebrate, as Queensland (hopefully) crushes New South Wales in the second State of Origin, taking back the shield that is deservedly theirs.

Beerwah Police urge residents to be mindful that a big night on the grog, may lead to alcohol still being in your system the following morning.

Federal Member for Fisher Mal Brough MP is calling on the Sunshine Coast to have their say as part of the country of origin food labelling reform.

“Made in Australia; Made in Australia from local and imported ingredients; Packaged in Australia – we see these labels on our products every day, but what do they really mean?” Mr Brough said.

“Consumers want, and have a right to know where the food they are buying is coming from and they need to feel confident that what they read on the label is what they are getting.

Landsborough local attends Dawn Service in Gallipoli

Landsborough resident, Anna Reynolds has recently returned from the trip of a lifetime when she was lucky enough to win two tickets in the ballot to attend the dawn service at Gallipoli.

Fulfilling a lifelong ambition, Anna was fortunate enough to be among a crowd of approximately 10,000 mainly Australian and New Zealand visitors to Anzac Cove in Turkey to mark the 100 year of ANZAC commemorations. From an early age it has been a goal of Anna’s to attend the service in Gallipoli.

Backpacking around Europe in the 1990’s, Anna always planned to visit Turkey, but at the time there was a lot of unrest in neighbouring countries and travel to the area was not advised.

Returning to Canberra and then moving up to the Sunshine Coast in 2003, Anna has attended a ‘Dawn Service’ every year – the last 11 years at Landsborough, along with her children.

Driving to work one day, Anna happened to hear

that the Department of Veterans Affairs were releasing a ballot for around 8,000 tickets to attend the service at Gallipoli and so that very morning Anna applied online. Last April she found out that she had won two tickets to attend.

“I was just so emotional and ecstatic that I could go,” she said. With nearly a year to go until the 100 year anniversary, Anna had plenty of time to save for airfares, accommodation and tours, and finally realised her 30 year ambition to attend.

Arriving in Istanbul on April 18 this year, Anna joined an Australian run tour that travelled to Gallipoli by bus. Leaving Istanbul on the morning of April 24, Anna and her bus group travelled the five hours to Gallipoli and then waited nearly eight hours to get through the three check points, arriving at Gallipoli at about 9.00pm that night. Over 250 coaches made the journey, with Anna’s bus identified as number 50. The group then walked along the road to Anzac Cove in the dark arriving at around 9.30pm where they were allocated a place to sit for the event.

Around 10,000 people attended, and Anna said it was a very emotional, yet respectfully quiet and contemplative gathering.

“There were a lot of tears and camaraderie, you just had to pinch yourself that you were actually at the service,” she said.

With the commemoration ceremony projected up on big screens, when the incredibly moving and dignified service ended, about 8,000 people then walked up the hill to Lone Pine.

“It was just incredible to walk in the footsteps of those who have passed,” she said.

“It was such a beautiful and peaceful place that it was hard to imagine the bloodshed and sorrow that had occurred in such an amazing landscape.”

As the sun came up, Anna said the crowds were united in their respect and admiration for those who had fought during the battle.

“It was just so moving, surreal and deeply beautiful and I feel just so incredibly fortunate to have been able to attend,” she said.

Running for research

By Lea Parkes GC&M News recently caught up with Beerwah couple Stuart and Lisa McLeod who are in training to complete in the Bridge to Brisbane 10km run to be held on Sunday, August 30.

The event allows participants to fundraise for a charity of their choice and the McLeods have chosen the Queensland Eye Institute Foundation.

When one of their children was diagnosed with an eye condition, and they learned just how much more research is required into the disease, they were keen to help raise funds for the organisation.

Once Stuart and Lisa decided to do the run, they then enlisted the support of family and friends.

They look like having a team of 16 on the day, and a very big fan club at the finishing line, including their four kids who are really excited and proud of them.

Lisa said since they set up their ‘everydayhero’ page, they’ve already received over $2000.00 in cash donations.

“As well as support from Beerwah IGA who donated two laundry baskets of groceries for our raffle,” she said.

Stuart who runs his own mobile welding business has been amazed at the generosity of some of the businesses he works for, as well as his suppliers, who have gotten behind the fundraising.

Once Stuart and Lisa decided to take on the 10km challenge they decided to get in training and a friend recommended going to Cameron Taylor for personal training. They said it had been great, exhausting but well worth it.

Now Cameron and his dad Norm Taylor are also part of the team, and have been selling raffle tickets for them at the Sans Training Centre in Beerwah.

Lisa has been really encouraged by the support they have received so far, and has found it really heart-warming to find out that some kids have even donated their pocket money!

The P&C welcomed a steady stream of visitors to the Art exhibition over the June long weekend, using the Waroo Hall to its full potential, as a multi-purpose space.

Forty one art works, contributed by artists from various locations, were represented at the Art exhibition and sale.

The quality of the works was high and drew a positive response from many visitors.

The P&C is now entering a review stage when it will draw upon this year’s Art Sale to inform its planning for future and similar events.

Amazing stories shared Contributed by Chris Bell Mukta and Saroj are two delightfully strong Christian Indian women who joined the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church morning service last Sunday with their support team from Mukti Mission Australia (that has been caring for Indian Women and girls for over 125 years.

As a tiny baby Saroj was left dumped in a sack.

Fortunately she was rescued and brought to Mukti Mission for care and rehabilitation, and now works for the Mission and has 16 children in her care.

When Mukta was five years old, following terrible health complications, she was put into the care of Mukti Mission. She had many operations, including two failed operations on her face deformed by lock jaw. The third operation was successful, and she is now a beautiful smiling young Christian woman who is house mother to 17 children in the Mukti Mission. It was such a privilege to meet them and support their Mission.

At the meeting of Beerwah NHWQ held on June 1, ‘Good Neighbour Awards’ were presented to Mike Turner (for April) and Graeme Cheal (representing the Glasshouse SES).

Mike was nominated by Pam and John Innes, who said: Mike goes beyond the bounds of duty to assist students, their families or staff members when requested, sometimes in his own time.

Through these experiences he became aware that there are young men in the community with young families who would be glad to meet with other men and talk.

Lions raffle aids Nepal

Contributed Diane Hobson Lions Clubs from the Sunshine Coast, Zone 12 area, including, Maleny Blackall Range, Beerwah, Lake Currimundi / Kawana, Mooloolah Valley, Caloundra and Caloundra Lionesses, held a quilt raffle which has raised an amazing $4113.65 for the Nepal disaster relief.

The quilt was made and generously donated by Maleny Blackall Range Lions President Helen Johnston. The raffle was won by Peter from Dickie Beach, Peter has trecked in Nepal and was extremely pleased to have helped the people of Nepal in some way.

The devastating effects of the earthquake in Nepal has left many thousands of people without shelter, food and clothing. The funds raised will be disbursed to Nepal by the Lions Club International Foundation. With the help of Lions Clubs around the world, Lions Clubs in Nepal are working tirelessly to assist those affected by the earthquake.

Zone Chairman, Rob Hobson, would like to thank all the Lions Clubs for participating in the project, and to all the people who purchased tickets, and the businesses who sold tickets.

Pam Innes, Mike Turner and Ron Stocks This resulted in the formation of the group known as Superdads and also in the organising of Dad's Day Out on Father's Day. This has become an annual event.

The SES was nominated by the Award committee for its splendid record of mountain rescues, and unfailing help in emergencies.

Local businesses are already showing their support by assisting the committee with opening a bank account and sourcing public liability insurance.

Sponsorship proposals are to be distributed soon. Local businesses, groups and individuals are encouraged to help gather the resources needed to run Photographer Graeme Murray another fabulous party for the Glasshouse Country community.

At the recent CWA Twilight Markets they held a Tea Cosy Competition and received some fabulous entries. Peachester CWA Update

Friendship Day on Tuesday saw a big crowd enjoying a guest speaker, who spoke about living in the Midlands in England, the Woodford Choir and the beautiful authentic food served by Beerwah and Peachester members.

Peachester’s share of the proceeds is going to ‘Women feed the world’ through the Associated Country Women of the world based in London.

Our cancer morning tea on Friday, May 29 was a brilliant success, raising over $1,300. A huge thank you to guest speaker Victoria, the people and businesses who gave donations for the rolling raffle, as well as the generous patrons who purchased the tickets and attended the morning tea, and all the ladies who provided the delightful eats. (Leftover food was sold).

Our regular meeting was held on Monday as Bev Wild and Coral Beutel were judging the cakes at the Caboolture Show on Thursday. It was decided at the meeting to donate money to the Royal Flying Doctors Service Care Flight, Ruth Fairfax House and Peachester Playgroup.

The Beauty of the Glass House Mountains Is the theme of this year’s Rotary Photo Competition

If you would like one of your photos to appear in the 2016 Calendar then get your cameras out and capture the beauty of our mountains from an artistic perspective.

Judges will be looking at the creative approach used in capturing your photos.

Each entrant can enter a maximum of 2 images Each entry must be submitted as an A4 landscape, hardcopy print on photo quality paper, mounted on card or foamcore, as well as an unedited file on a separate CD. Images will be required to be delivered to the Beerwah Library by Sunday, August 9, 2015, with the completed entry form.

The images will be on display from Monday, August 10, 2015.

Don’t make yourself a target!

Once again we have had a number of stealing offences in the area. In the last month in the Beerwah and Landsborough divisions there have been eight unlawful entries into vehicles and while a couple of these vehicles have been in the mountain carparks, a number of them have been in the township areas.

It is important to remember that you should never leave anything of value in your vehicle whether it is parked in your driveway, at the shops or in the National Park.

While the ‘Lock it or Lose it’ idea is important, it’s also important to remember that if your car is in an isolated spot, the offender may just smash the window if they think there is something worthwhile inside.

Also in the last month there have been five houses which have been entered or had property stolen from them.

Again it is important to remember to lock your house night and day, sometimes even when you are home.

If you are going to be in the back yard or somewhere that is out of hearing of the front door then try to get into the habit of locking your front door.

Always lock valuable items away and don’t leave them in the yard or on porch areas, particularly if you are not going to be home for an extended period.

Several businesses have also been targeted in the past month with more than 15 offences of entering and/or stealing from our local businesses.

Some of these offenders have been dealt with, however we are still looking for information in relation to a number of them many of which occurred after hours. Magic Movies & Music

Matthew Flinders Environment Club and Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare planted 350 trees and 70 large Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vines in the Mountain Creek Forest, to celebrate World Environment Day. These vines will provide habitat for the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly in the future. This program is supported by the Sunshine Coast Council for the recovery of the vine that has slowly disappeared over many years due to sub-division and infrastructure.

Our Environmental Manager Jan Kesby will be monitoring the vines over the years to watch their success and habitat by the Birdwing Butterfly caterpillars.

If anyone has old growth Birdwing vine on their property Jan would love to GPS the site. The purpose is to look at what vines are already there and fill in the gaps with new vines to help the recovery of this beautiful butterfly on the Sunshine Coast.

Flood Photos: Past or present Jan Kesby is putting together a Mooloolah River Flood booklet and would appreciate any photos of flooding in Mooloolah River, Hell Hole, Mountain Creek, Sippy Creek and any other creeks in the Mooloolah Catchment including measurements of water heights.

All historical data is important to help us better understand flood risk areas for the future and whether flood heights are getting higher because of development and siltation or is it the same as 100 years ago?

Diamond Valley got washed out in the last flood, it's more than likely the biggest flood Diamond Valley has ever seen, or is this because we have more houses up there now that can measure it?

School News Carrots, spinach and broccoli..oh my!

Contributed by Beerwah Kindy This term Bunning’s Caloundra generously responded to the children’s request for donations towards their Kindy garden, and they received a huge amount of seedlings and plants.

Gardening is an integral part of our program at Beerwah Kindy, it gives the children the opportunity to research seasonal vegetables, prepare and plant in garden beds, and finally to harvest Angus with gloves on ready to plant

and cook with their produce.

Developing a love of nature can impact the way children view the world around them and the food they eat.

A visit by Dale, a local apiarist, created much excitement amongst the children and helped to expand the children’s understanding of how things in nature are interconnected. They were also able to get an up-close view into the functioning of a bee hive.

Mad scientist at Glenview State School Contributed by Sonia Clark Glenview State School recently held their first ever STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) day. It was an exciting event filled with lots of hands-on experiments and activities led by the Street Science Team and four of the schools University of the Sunshine Coast practicum teaching students.

The mad scientist Jess from Street Science blew things up and made awesome coloured flames using different chemicals. Two lucky students got to put on lab coats and help with an experiment using nappies and fake snow.

Science Steve showed the students how to make their own non-newtonian fluid (aka slime) and then students got to mix two solutions together to

watch fake snow grow before their eyes.

Other fun activities included designing and building bridges made of straw and then testing their weight, learning about light and mirrors (as it is the International Year of Light) and making and flying rotocopters using balloons and hairdryers!

Students from Maleny, Montville, Conondale and Peachester State Schools will be preforming an exciting program of performances in early August at the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod, Nambour Concert Hall.

Maleny State School will host The Hinterland Combined Schools Concert and Awards evening on October 27.

A few budding musicians will represent Peachester Primary, having attained the required standard to qualify as band members. They are looking forward to the music workshops, being given the opportunity to hone their craft, and to develop new district friendships with those who share a mutual appreciation of music and the arts.

Re: Bowen Road

It is really interesting to read letters commenting on the Bowen Road and Steve Irwin Way intersection?

If the intersection is at the end of a connection road from the freeway then shouldn’t the council/main roads be looking at the bigger picture, as there are two sharp corners, Johnson and Crittenden and Crittenden and Johnson leading to the intersection.

The corners in question are accident prone and should be regarded as black spots.

We have lived here for two years and have noted five accidents on one corner only and many near misses. Council recently provided better signage and within a week another car came off the road.

In my opinion Johnson Road should be sealed right through to Steve Irwin way, land has already been resumed to create a better junction, and the original plan showed traffic lights at Johnson, Bowen and Glass House.

Why not go through with the original planning before there are more fatalities on this stretch of road or do we have to wait the 20 years?

And a reminder this is a school bus route, so slow down.

Like Shirley we are all looking forward to the opening of Roys Road.

It all sounded plausible

With the internet and mobile phones these days it has become easier for unscrupulous people to create SCAMS. Some are simple and obvious and others have become much more sophisticated like the one that nearly fooled me.

It began when an envelope arrived in the mail from Malaysia containing two scratchies cards and a glossy brochure for travel in that country. The cards were for a complimentary lottery with prizes ranging from $250,000 USD to an X Box Live.

I hadn’t had any contact with the sender and had no idea how they had obtained my address so my first reaction was SCAM. I threw them on my desk where my wife found them and scratched the squares to discover I had won 2nd prize of $160,000 USD. After a series of phone calls it seemed that I didn’t qualify as the first three major prizes were reserved for investors in an Australian hotel project.

However, since my tickets had been unsolicited, they would fight to have my prize accepted as they didn’t want any bad publicity.

This was eventually accepted with the condition that I sign a nondisclosure agreement (NDA).

This was done and all that was now necessary was to send $3630 USD as my half share for a Certificate of Authorisation (COA) from the High Court of Hong Kong for the release of a sum in excess of $100,000 USD. What followed was pressure to get this money transferred straight away.

It was just prior to this that a friend Drew showed me the Scamwatch page on-line stating that the Braveheart scratchies were all a scam, so when the request came for my money all hope disappeared.

This was a very clever scam. Each doubt was responded to with plausible stories.

I guess the best way to avoid being taken in is to obey the golden rule; if it looks too good to be true it probably is.

The hinterland certainly came alive on Friday night, June 5 when Vianta Expresso in Beerwah, celebrated the grand opening of Vianta Arts - a professional open access gallery in the heart of the hinterland.

President: Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce

The recent Tourism information night held by the Chamber was well attended. It was terrific to hear a range of topics and different perspectives from the guest speakers. Whilst some of the speakers took a different approach to the topics discussed all were very positive about the opportunities for small business and tourism in the region going forward.

There was also an announcement of funding from the Sunshine Coast Council to assist the newly incorporated body Celebrate Beerwah.

More to come in relation to this body in the next few articles.

The Chamber has continued to work quietly away at the installation of CCTV in Glasshouse, Beerwah, and Landsborough and things are proceeding to plan at this stage. Installation should commence in the next couple of months with completion to be achieved in October.

On another note it was encouraging to see the Federal Budget initiate some proposals to stimulate small business. Anything to assist small business is always welcome and to discuss how these initiatives may be of benefit to you it is important to speak with your accountant.

And with the end of the financial year very quickly approaching there are obviously other issues you should discuss with your accountant while you are there.

We are holding another of our successful Networking Dinner meetings at the Beerwah RSL on June 24. Come along at 6.00pm, meeting to start at 6.30pm. Guest speaker on the night will be Helen Wilkinson, who will talk about the opportunities offered by the SpeedSeed project for local businesses to become involved in great community initiatives.

Attitude is everything; that unspoken gesture of tell-tale body language that says so much to the observer.

Potential customers pick up on such signs and gestures, or lack of them, and sometimes you may not even be aware you have done so; but your potential customer is already forming an opinion about you and your business before they are very much past your door.

Just the same as you’re assessing them – is this person a potential customer, are they ‘just browsing’, can I turn ‘just browsing’ to my advantage, a possible sale? You are being ‘sussed out’.

It is the time to be consciously approachable, affable, and positive.

Remember, first impressions…

Attitude, reflected by your body language is important. It is your first weapon of attack. And if it’s not appropriate you may have just lost a chance.

If the customer, in taking those first few steps into your premises, perceives you as being disinterested, ambivalent or even seemingly hostile, they are more than likely to turn to someone else.

If you are lucky it may be someone else in your business; but more likely it will be someone else with a better attitude in your rival’s business.

Be nice to people, treat them as you would like to be treated.

It is the people who do that in your business who will help make your business successful. An appropriate attitude presents the warm, welcoming face of your company.

You are seen as a business with the customer’s interests a priority. They will want to do business with you.

So, even on the days when you don’t much feel like it – too tired, too hot, too busy – do it. Don’t let an opportunity slip past because you couldn’t be bothered raising a smile.

You may be all too familiar with that crick you get when you cradle the phone between your shoulder and ear, driving the car, or the strain you feel after working at your computer. Neck pain rarely starts overnight. It usually evolves over time. And it may be accentuated by poor posture, declining muscle strength, stress, and even a lack of sleep. The following six tips can help you take care of your neck.

1. Don’t stay in one position for too long - it’s hard to reverse bad posture, but if you get up and move around often enough, you’ll avoid getting your neck stuck in an unhealthy position.

2. Make some ergonomic adjustments - position your computer monitor at eye level so you can see it easily. Use the hands-free function on your phone or wear a headset. Prop your touch-screen tablet on a pillow so that it sits at a 45° angle, instead of lying flat on your lap.

3. If you wear glasses, keep your prescription up-todate. When your eyewear prescription is not up-todate, you tend to lean your head back to see better.

4. Don’t use too many pillows - sleeping with several pillows under your head can stifle your neck’s range of motion.

5. Know your limits - before you move a big cupboard across the room, consider what it might do to your neck and back, and ask for help.

6. Get a good night’s sleep. Sleep problems increase the risk for several different conditions, including musculoskeletal pain. Back and side positions are the best for your spine. Avoid stomach sleeping.

Winter Solstice Faire Sarah and Julie Jackson from the Sacred Tree Café are inviting locals to come along to their Winter Solstice Faire on Saturday, June 20 from 9.00am – 2.00pm.

Julie said, "one of the unique elements of the Sacred Tree Café is the great outdoor space we have, in particular the garden area which can be used for all types of events or functions."

Students visit Bankfoot House At the end of May, over 80 Year 3 students from Glasshouse Christian College were the first visitors to experience the new Mary Grigor Centre within the Bankfoot House heritage precinct.

Primary students have regularly visited the historic Bankfoot House to complement their studies in local history. The old house is specifically set up to demonstrate to students the life of the early pioneers – without electricity – and to feature the equipment used across two centuries.

The modern interpretive space in the new Mary Grigor Centre clearly contributes to the comfort of students and visitors. There are chairs to sit on, a large TV screen to better view the historic photos in the collection, and public toilets are now available. In wet weather, volunteers will no longer have to erect tarpaulins on the verandah of the old house to keep the children dry!

Students can be better organised to allow smaller groups to be given specific information on timber-getting, laundry implements, the bunya trees as well the guided tours of the house.

Visits by students from other areas of the Sunshine Coast are scheduled later in the year.

Thank you to everyone who visited my stand at the Maleny Show recently, and a big congratulations to the Maleny Show Society for another great year. Your hard work was rewarded with great weather and big crowds.

CCTV update

In previous editions I have provided updates on the Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce CCTV project.

I am pleased to say that this federally funded project is well underway and will include the installation of CCTV in Glass House Mountains, Beerwah and Landsborough.

The project aims to cover ‘hot spot’ areas identified by local police to assist in crime prevention and prosecuting offenders.

The Chamber is in the process of securing the CCTV supplier and are in discussions with police and council to ensure the placement of cameras is appropriate.

The next stage is for the Chamber to engage with building owners and tenants regarding the fitting of cameras on specific buildings.

The project is on track to be completed by October.

The long weekend was full of other activities including the annual monthly dinner at the Wamuran Sports Club and the official opening of the Caboolture Show where I also participated in a Masterchef style Cooking Master Class sponsored by 101.5FM Radio.

I also caught up with Bill Hauritz and my colleagues Adrian Raedel and Wyatt Roy at The Planting, which is an annual festival held at the Woodfordia site.

Out and About in Glass House

There are always positive and negative attributes to new technologies, especially when they are easily accessible for children. Parents want to protect their children from cyber bullies, but with so many different social media outlets to choose from such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Pinterest, it is easy for children to log on at any time without their parent’s knowledge, at school or at home, on their computers or handheld devices.

While social media can be a fun way for children and youth to communicate with friends, it can also be a platform for bullying and a grooming ground for predators – lifting the problem out of the school playground, and into a 24 hour world that threatens the emotional, mental and physical health of our young people.

School communities are having to tackle this head on and we need to do the same at home.

Recently, Glasshouse Christian College Principal Mike Curtis highlighted the need for cyber safety practices in the latest College newsletter, which for me made a global problem very local.

As the first line of defence, it is essential to be aware of and involved in the social media sites your children use. Secondly, computer software programs and filters can also help keep your children safe on the internet. I encourage all parents to visit www.cybersmart.gov.au for helpful tips for safety when online.

Hinterland Connect Bus Service

Deputy Premier and Minister for Transport The Hon Jackie Trad has responded to my correspondence in March regarding the future funding of the much needed Hinterland Connect bus service and my query as to the future of the Beerwah section. The Minister acknowledges the benefits of the service to residents and confirms a decision about the future of the trial is imminent. Ms Trad has given me her word that TMR will inform the community should any changes be proposed that will impact the Hinterland Connect bus service.

Are they a special kind?

Our granddaughter recently found some caterpillars in our garden. Can you please identify what they are? One was trodden on, however there are lots more there. We don't want to spray them just in case they may be a special kind. They are eating our brommys as well. We would appreciate any help.

Hi Mary-Anne, They’re a caterpillar called the Crinum Caterpillar (or Lily Caterpillar) – they love eating lilies – especially Crinum (or Brisbane or Swamp) lily – but will also feed on Clivia and Hippeastrum. Never heard of them eating broms … so that’s weird. While they are brightly coloured now, they will turn into a plain looking brown moth.

The caterpillars can be very damaging and it is probably a good idea to control them. You can use something like pyrethrum which is a contact natural insecticide – so you have to spray it on the caterpillars.

It is broken down by UV light so it’s best to spray in the late afternoon. Or you could use Success or Dipel – which are gut-inhibitors (meaning the caterpillar eats the sprayed leaf and the active ingredient stops them from being able to digest food, and they die of starvation). Both of these are natural products – Success is a soil-derived product and Dipel is a bacteria – and both affect nothing but caterpillars (and small grasshoppers).

Dodonaea triquetra Forest hop bush is one of our most common local shrubs and can be found on sandy soils in South East Queensland. This plant is sparsely branched and grows two to three metres in the understorey of dry Eucalypt forests or in moister soils.

Flowers are produced in Winter / Spring, are minute and yellow green in colour. Separate male and female flowers are produced on different plants.

While Forest hop bush is probably not a plant you would grow for flowers, it is well worth a space in the garden for the spectacular seed capsules. These three winged, papery seed capsules may be lime green or deep purple and remain on the plant for some time.

There are three Hop bush species growing in the Glass House Mountains including one restricted to the mountain tops and classified as vulnerable.

Plants suffer the winter chills too It’s not only us humans (and our four legged furry friends) that feel the effects of the cooler weather … our gardens do as well.

Queensland winters generally mean lower temperatures and lower rainfall.

It is better than what the southern parts of the country receive, which is cold wet winters. They play havoc on gardens.

So for us, our garden plants don’t stop growing through winter – they may slow down, but they don’t stop.

This means that they still need the basics for survival in sufficient supplies – that is water, sunlight, nutrients, soil, air and warmth.

Some plants are designed to flourish in these conditions, such as Camellia, Poinsettia and flowering succulents.

But most will slow down their metabolic processes in response to the lower light, water and warmth.

So to help your garden through the winter, there are a few basic things you can do.

Mulch the soil. This keeps the ground warmer around the roots, and conserves moisture from the drying winter winds.

Water once a week. If you’ve mulched, once a week will be fine – veggie gardens will need three times a week. Water and mulch will also keep the soil microorganisms happy, meaning that you’ll have healthier soil too.

Fertilise less. Slower growing plants need less nutrients, so don’t overfertilise. Also use a fertiliser with less nitrogen and slightly more potassium.

Move potted plants. Smaller pots can easily be moved to a spot which receives more light. It’s a good idea to have larger pots either on wheels or use an upright trolley to give them a holiday in a sunnier place.

Fork the ground. Use your garden fork to aerate the soil, allowing oxygen to reach the plant roots and making for better water penetration.

Protect sensitive plants. If you experience frosts or have specific cold sensitive plants, it may be a good idea to protect them with a shadecloth cover. Build a frame so that you can easily throw the cloth over when very cold nights are predicted, and then you can take it off in the morning. Also watch out for those drying westerly winds we get in July and August.

Prune in June. It’s time to prune things like Roses, Crepe myrtle, Plumbago, Frangipani, and Copperleaf (or Acalypha). Definitely don’t prune your spring flowering shrubs – such as Azalea, Brunsfelsia, Jasmine, Viburnum and Rondeletia (if you don’t have one or two of these, you should – they’re colourful, hardy and have old-world charm).

Contributed by Jill Kirchheiner Friday Night Tennis – the finals still went ahead last Friday, with only one division not being able to finish due to the weather. Thanks to all the players for playing the season and also to the fill-in players as you are always needed. A big thank you to Beerwah and District Trophies for donating the Division 1 trophies for the season and a big thanks to Katya, the local tennis coach, for organising matches, teams and venues and the breakup night. A good night was had by all, just a little dampened by the rain.

The next season will commence approximately at the end of July or beginning of August. If you would like to play please contact Katya on 5494 9464 or 0417 625 194. The season goes for 14 weeks which includes the semi-finals and finals, so if you put your name down to play, this is the length of the season for which you need to be available for.

Also matches do not get played over the school holidays.

Results for the finals are as follows Division 1 – Nadal (Dylan Kerr and Mitchell Jennings) defeated Djokovic (Daisy Archer and Archie Merrett). The Tennis Ace Award went to Van McNeilly.

Division 2 – Riley Korczynski defeated Bryce Sambrook. The Tennis Ace Award went to Declan Keays.

Division 3/Peewee – Prince (Tiana Sambrook and Archie Seymour) defeated Head (Jesse Archer and Jack Williamson). The Tennis Ace Award went to Lara Korczynski.

ContinuousTennis – Emily Gripske defeated Isabel Putzolu. The Tennis Ace Award went to Emily Gripske. Encouragement awards went to Eadie Turner and Josh Williamson.

by Halcyon and Club Super. The competitions attracted 50 players who competed in two divisions. The worthy winners were: Division 1 Sue Greentree with a 71 nett and runner-up was Hope Hannah with 73 nett.

Division 2 Winner was Anne Leonard on a count back with 76 nett and runner-up was Bridget John on a count back with 76 nett.

NTP’s were won by: Lea Garner No 2, Carolyn Gamble No 5, Mavis Brimelow No 16 and Heather Henn No 18. The Ball Rundown went to 79 nett.

On Friday, June 12 the ladies played a single stroke competition for club trophies and the 2nd round of the Club Championships sponsored

by Halcyon and Club Super. The competitions attracted 40 players who competed in two divisions. The worthy winners were Division 1Carolyn Gamble with 74 nett, and runner-up was Pam Marsden with 78 nett.

Division 2 winner was Jan Cornfield with 73 nett and runner-up was Marie Norton with 79 nett.

NTP’s were won by Andrea Campbell No 2, Carolyn Gamble No 5, Fay Barry No 16 and Sonia Kenway No 18. The Ball Rundown went to 82 nett.

The final two rounds of the championships, sponsored by Halcyon and Club Super, will be played on Thursday and Friday next week and held in conjunction with a daily competition.

Doggone dog Joe was a flight attendant for ab airlines and as he watched an older lady boarding the plane he noticed that she was holding a dog in a cage.

“Excuse me,” said Joe, “dogs are not allowed on board, you have to check it in with the baggage.” The lady wasn’t happy, but Joe was an experienced steward and succeeded in convincing the lady without much of a scene. Upon arrival, Joe took a peek in the cage, and to his great surprise, saw that the dog was dead! Frantic that they may get sued, Joe quickly sent one

of his underlings out to town to buy a dog that looked exactly the same. Just in the nick of time the underling arrived with the dog; they quickly switched dogs and breathed a sigh of relief.

“This isn’t my dog!” said the lady as soon as she saw it. “I’m sure it is,” insisted Joe. “I was very careful about where I put it.” “It’s not my dog,” argued the lady, “you see, I was bringing my dog to my home town to have him buried, and this dog is alive!”
