Budget winners and losers The Federal Budget, passed down last week, has been based on “fairness, security and opportunity”, according to the Treasurer Scott Morrison. He described the budget as providing “better days ahead” for all Australians. The big picture is that the Budget forecasts a deficit of $29.4 billion in 2017-18, with a projected return to a $7.4 billion surplus in 2020-21. But how does it affect us in our part of the world? Some of the broader aspects include: • Medicare Levy will go up by 0.5% to 2.5% to help cover the costs of the NDIS Scheme; • First home buyers can salary sacrifice into Super to save for a deposit; • Older Australians will be able to tip up to $300,000 into their Super after selling their home; • Drug and alcohol testing, a demerit point penalty system and a cashless debit card will be trialled for welfare recipients; • The building of infrastructure gets $75 billion set aside over the next 10 years – including $8.4 billion for inland rail between Melbourne and Brisbane, a new $10 billion National Rail Program to improve passenger rail (including Brisbane’s Cross River Rail project), $5.3 billion for a new airport in western Sydney; • The ‘Big 5’ banks will be slugged with a new tax, raising $6.2 billion over four years; • School funding models will be changed, with private schools feeling the pinch; • University student fees will be going up and they’ll start paying their HECS debt back earlier;

• A commitment to cut the company tax rate to 25% for all businesses; • Pensioners who lost their concession cards in January due to a change in the asset rules will have them restored (over time); • Parents who don’t vaccinate their children will lose $28 a fortnight off their family tax benefits; • Former Parliamentarians will lose their travel entitlements, with the life gold pass being abolished for everyone except former Prime Ministers; • Spending on arts and cultural heritage will decrease by 2.6% in real terms; • The foreign aid budget will be frozen for two years; • Roll-your-own tobacco and cigars will be taxed more; • Those employing foreign workers (like farmers) will have to pay a $1,200 annual fee per worker plus a one-off $3,000 payment; • Older Australians will get a one-off $75 power rebate, and over-60s on welfare will now have to complete 10 hours of approved activity a fortnight, which can include volunteering; • The Landcare program has been allocated $1 billion over five years; • Unfortunately, no money has been allocated to improve mobile phone reception through the ‘black spot’ program. Other infrastructure commitments affecting Queensland include: • $844 million for new Bruce Highway priority projects; • A Regional Growth Fund to invest $472 million

in regional infrastructure projects that back regional plans to adapt to the changes taking place in the economy – includes $200 million for a further round of the Building Better Regions Fund; • The Government will streamline the delivery of the $2 billion National Water Infrastructure Loan Facility and the $2 billion Farm Business Concessional Loan Scheme. According to Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace, locals will benefit from new employment and investment opportunities flowing from a $530 million commitment for critical upgrades to the Bruce Highway between the Pine River and Caloundra interchanges as part of the $844 million major package. “I could not be happier that the Treasurer and Minister Chester have prioritised investment in the section of the Bruce between the Pine River interchange and Caloundra. This is in addition to the more than $900 million upgrade from Caloundra to the Sunshine Motorway that the Federal Government announced last year,” Mr Wallace said. The Budget also contained $5 million in Federal funding for the Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience Thompson Institute, to fund the creation of three new clinical treatment programs on the Sunshine Coast. But local rail commuters will despair at the lack of a commitment to specifically fund the rail upgrade from Beerburrum to Nambour. Labor candidate for Tibrogargan, Brent Hampstead, said that while the Federal Budget commitment to the Bruce Highway was welcome, the continued snubbing of the North Coast Rail Line was clear. “It’s one thing for Andrew Wallace to be in Canberra nodding his head during the budget speech, but we are shaking our heads at the lack of rail funding for our fast-growing community,” Mr Hampstead said. There was also no specific allocation to allow the Sunshine Coast University Hospital medical school to proceed, according to Cameron Dick, Queensland Minister for Health. But there was a cash allocation for a planned medical school in New South Wales. “Ted O’Brien and Andrew Wallace need to explain to their voters why the Turnbull Government has not allocated any additional Commonwealth medical places to Griffith University to deliver the fifty funded positions that are needed,” said Minister Dick.
Maleny ANZ to close in August By Greg Brown In a move seemingly unrelated to the bank tax announced in the Federal Budget, the ANZ branch in Maleny is to close as of August 2 this year. With no apparent official notice to Maleny account holders from ANZ, the rumour was spread about town by social media and locals were forced to contact ANZ themselves to confirm the news. The building sold in December 2016, and the current lease by ANZ runs out in 2018. ANZ has operated from the Maple and Teak Street corner since 1990. The closest remaining open branch is at Beerwah. This follows the closure of the Suncorp branch in Beerwah earlier this year and multiple ANZ branch closures around Queensland and through other states – including Toogoolawah, Gayndah, Theodore, Redcliffe, Redland Bay, Yandina and Emerald. In a statement to the Financial Sector Union regarding recent branch closures, ANZ cited a decline in over the counter transactions as the reason for branch closures. “In recent years we have experienced a significant change in the way our customers choose to do their banking. Customers ... are increasingly choosing to use more digital ways of banking, such as goMoney, ANZ Smart ATMs and other digital methods for simple transactions.” Locals are understandably disturbed by the decision. Comments to the ANZ Facebook page have included: “This is NOT GOOD ENOUGH ANZ. There a lot of people in Maleny who use your Maleny branch because it is local. Daryl, Kathy and the team at Maleny have looked after us for years and to be told we now have to go off the range to bank @ Beerwah is total BS.” “The people of Maleny are p!$$ed off and believe me I have been told by business owners who bank with ANZ, they will be swapping over to other banks because you're closing a local branch.” “... not sure that going to Beerwah is going to make our little community happy. There is a good chance that people will close their accounts and move to another bank. Sorry guys it might be a good idea to remember Woolworths.” The closure leaves the town with only three financial services branches – Bank of Queensland, Suncorp and Maleny Credit Union.

Specialist helicopters take to the skies Helicopters with specially designed inspection equipment are taking to the skies in Southern Queensland to capture video footage of some small but very important components on Powerlink’s electricity transmission towers. Powerlink Chief Executive Merryn York said the helicopters would be used to safely inspect the insulators – the strings of porcelain or glass discs – located near the top of transmission towers. “A fully insulated platform is fitted underneath the helicopter to enable a specialist linesman to sit outside the helicopter and carefully steer a camera attached to a five-metre insulating pole to record video of the insulator strings,” Ms York said. “The video footage recorded at selected towers is then reviewed to determine if any corrosion or contaminants can be found on the steel pins that join the insulator discs together. “This technique is a time and cost effective way to inspect this equipment, which ultimately plays an essential role in ensuring the continued safe and reliable operation of our transmission network.” Ms York said the targeted helicopter patrols would take place across the Sunshine Coast hinterland region during May and crews would complete the work as quickly and nondisruptively as possible. “We want to minimise any potential disturbance to local residents near our transmission lines while this important work is carried out. We appreciate their cooperation and patience,” Ms York said.
“Highly trained helicopter pilots will endeavour to maintain the maximum distance practically possible from houses, livestock and crops. “Local residents may see the helicopter moving at a low level along our transmission lines. The helicopter may hover for up to 10 minutes at the towers where the insulator video inspection work is being done.” Ms York said Powerlink was aware that low-flying helicopters had the potential to startle livestock. She encouraged anyone with questions about the inspections to contact Powerlink for further information. Small Farmers tent packed with big ideas Fast becoming a firm family favourite at the Maleny Agricultural Show, the popular 'Small Farmers' Tent returns again this year with a packed schedule of interactive activities, demonstrations and talks. This specially created enclosure will showcase hinterland farmers and their produce as well as having fun practical demonstrations on a range of agricultural topics to inspire and engage young people. Organiser Jess Wild, who comes from longstanding family tradition of involvement with the show, is really looking forward to the 80th celebration year. “This year is shaping up to be very fun in the Small Farmers Tent!” says Jess. “I’m thrilled with the popularity of the program and love seeing so many people interested in learning about the fun and enjoyment that good food and good farming can bring. “It really strengthens the position of the local farmer and the local community as new connections are made and hands-on experience

Recollections: 50 Years of Loving Landsborough Recollections: 50 Years of Loving Landsborough is a series of events to be held in Landsborough from August to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast as well as being a focal point for the local community. Several community organisations are working together to plan activities including: ‘Loving Landsborough Day’, a community celebration; ‘The Newsmakers – 50 years of major events on the Sunshine Coast’, a new installation for the Landsborough Museum; and an arts project including workshops to be based at the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall. The purpose of the collaborative activity is to bring the community together for many reasons including building community connections and relationships, exploring how local groups
can work together, and also to provide a great opportunity for locals and visitors to celebrate the beauty in the region. It’s also an opportunity to learn about the history of Landsborough and the Sunshine Coast and through art, to see things from a different perspective. Oldest mobile library set to be refurbished One of Sunshine Coast Council’s most utilised and valued community services, the oldest mobile library affectionately called ‘Mobi 1’, will head to the workshop for a much-needed refurbishment from May 12 to 29. Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said ‘Mobi 1’, which was built in 2004, would be refurbished to ensure it offered a contemporary space for people to access.
“There is no doubt the mobile library service is a valued community service, bringing a range of diverse collections and services to people from all walks of life,” Cr McKay said. “During the refurbishment a revised mobile library timetable will operate to ensure minimal disruption to library customers. “This means that while the second mobile library and the newly branded ‘First 5 Forever’ courier van will be servicing the region it may be at different times or regularity for the two week period.” To obtain a copy of the temporary timetable, please visit council’s library website.

Local volunteers receive $25,000 from the Feds
As we celebrated National Volunteer Week last week, seven individuals and organisations in Maleny and Landsborough were among nearly 100,000 volunteers across Australia benefiting from $10 million in Australian Government grants to support community organisations. The grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 enable organisations to better support their volunteers by purchasing much-needed equipment, training and transport. Local Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said, “The energy, expertise and time our volunteers give to our community supports those most in need and represents what Australian communities are all about – giving a helping hand. “I’m glad to see that our local organisations will have this support to continue their valuable work. Volunteers rarely ask for anything, they just get on with the job. It is good to see the Government making it just a little easier.” The locals receiving grants include Landsborough Primary P&C Association, who received $3,200 for training of their volunteers, and Guides Queensland in Maleny, who received $2,100 for the transport costs of volunteers with disability and for appliances. Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club received $5,000 for landscaping and gardening while Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Association received $1,600 for computer and kitchen equipment. Landsborough Area Community Association received $4,182 for computer equipment and fuel costs, while Maleny and District Men’s Shed were given $4,926 for first aid equipment and tools. Club secures 30-year lease and funds for Author Michael 18-hole vision Robotham
Maleny Golf Club has (photographer marked yet another Tony Mott) milestone with the official signing of a new 30-year lease agreement accommodating the entire 18-hole Graham Papworthdesigned layout, enabling construction of the next three holes to get underway. The documents Judy Phipps witnessing execution of lease were formally signed documents by Max Whitten and Roly Nieper by President Max Whitten and Secretary Roly Nieper in the presence of local JP Judy Phipps. They were then presented for execution by the Sunshine Coast Council and subsequent lodgement with the Queensland Titles Office. “This is an historic occasion for the club and we particularly want to thank Councillor Jenny McKay and Deputy Mayor Tim Dwyer for their efforts in marshalling council’s support behind this significant, long-term, community project,” Dr Whitten said. “We are also pleased to advise that we have reached agreement with council officers for delivery of the project financing required for construction of the second nine holes in three tranches as provided for in our staged construction schedule.” Finalisation of the lease will also enable the club to quickly move ahead with plans to build a new maintenance facility.

QCWA Peachester Branch Contributed by Beverley Wild Our members are hosting a Biggest Morning Tea, in aid of cancer research, on Tuesday May 30 in the Peachester Hall, from 9am to 11.30am. The event will feature a guest speaker, musical entertainment and a large multi-draw raffle. Please come along and make the morning a huge success again this year. The April Village markets were well supported. Our thanks to all the stall holders, patrons and our volunteers for their continuing help, for without them the markets could not continue. The second part of the State Cookery contest was held and the cakes and preserves were sold on the stall. An International School children’s competition was held in conjunction with the BeerwahPeachester International Day and members’
project, scrapbook and tea towel competitions. Our April meeting featured the branch’s State Photography Competition with winning entries going on to next level of judging. The regional judging is being held at Moranbah this week, then the winning entries of both contests will go on to further judging at the State Conference, being held in October at the Brisbane Convention Centre. After our recent meeting, members enjoyed a Mother’s Day lunch at the Peachester Cafe with friends of Coral, who is leaving the district. She was presented with a beautiful floral table arrangement and a cake by the members. The dates for the markets have been changed to July 22, September 30 and November 25. Our next meeting is being held on May 30, following the Biggest Morning Tea. New members are always welcome.

Here’s lookin’ at you, Koch Sunrise presenter David Koch promised the Vintage Calendar Girls he would bring his best Blue Steel to his photo shoot for the Sunshine Coast fundraising project … and he didn’t disappoint. After being challenged to appear in the calendar two years ago by founder Misty Bland, who was being interviewed by Mr Koch in a live cross on the popular breakfast show following the launch of the inaugural calendar, Ms Bland had to pinch herself as the photoshoot unfolded recently. A small crew of VCG volunteers flew from the Sunshine Coast to Mr Koch’s Surry Hills studio in Sydney to capture one of the key images for the 2018 calendar. Armed with a trench coat and a fedora, Mr Koch admitted he had thought Ms Bland wouldn’t follow up on her on-air challenge. “But I am pleased that she did,” he said. Shooting for the 2018 limited edition calendar is well underway and will hit another peak when Todd McKenney and Cherie Barber head to the Coast for their photo shoot later this month. Tickets are already available online for the Gala Launch, on September 8 at Maleny Manor, and calendar pre-orders are open. The Vintage Calendar Girls are also looking for sponsors to come on board to help them to really excel in their fundraising venture this year.

Ongoing work Landsborough Hall – Stage 4 Contributed by Linda Morse Recent grants totalling $32,500 from Sunshine Coast Council have provided essential funding for urgent structural repairs to the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall. As part of the ongoing renewal program for this historic landmark, the latest undertaking required seven steel beams to be positioned under the building, spanning the gully and providing additional structural support. The cost of the project was $40,500. Additionally, defective support posts in the gully were replaced and the area levelled off. The placement of these beams Cr Rick Baberowski with Shirley Ruhle and Phill Bundesen
has provided further stabilisation for the building. This has removed the load on the original support posts, making a number of these posts redundant. This is fortunate as many have been severely affected by age and decay. The committee is grateful to Sunshine Coast Council and Cr Baberowski for these grants to fund these repairs and acknowledges Bundesen Family Builders for their professional work and completion in a timely manner with minimal disruption to the hall activities. Planning is underway for the committee’s next project, the replacement of the original 1924 flooring, followed by repairs to the rear access ramp. Refurbishment of the toilets and external painting of the hall are also being planned. The committee aims for the repairs/restoration of this iconic building to be completed in time for the hall’s centenary in 2024. This will ensure our hall will stand for another 100 years, continuing its service to the local community.

The Beerwah Writers Group is a collection of local amateur and professional writers who meet to discuss aspects of writing and publishing. From the light and humorous, through insightful and compassionate to the darkly dangerous, our members include emerging and professional writers, exploring the human condition from within their individual responses to life. Established in 2006 by a group of like-minded people who wanted to share their experience with writing, the group meets on the second and fourth Fridays of the month in the Beerwah Library. Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre was a hive of activity last Tuesday morning as a bunch of local volunteers came together for a ‘Boomerang Bag’ making session. This awesome grassroots community initiative tackles plastic bag pollution by bringing volunteers together to use recycled material to make re-useable fabric shopping bags – which can be used and returned. The workshop was instigated by local Glass House resident Christine McMahon who thought it would be great “to give something back”, and the morning involved a number of different ‘production’ areas Raelene with the first within the hall with com pleted bag of the volunteers busily workshop cutting out bag patterns, screen printing, ironing and sewing. Christine estimated that each bag takes approximately one hour to create and the hope is to produce enough to supply local businesses. The next ‘Boomerang Bag’ workshop will be on Tuesday May 23 from 8.30am to noon. Garden with a long history Last weekend when Pattemore House was open to the public we took the opportunity to get a sneak preview of the garden as this year it is going to be one of the featured gardens as part of the Maleny Garden Club’s Gardening on the Edge on Saturday and Sunday, June 10 and 11. The Maleny Garden Club is proud of its connection to the garden through the Armstrong family who lived there. Daisy Armstrong was a very active member of the Maleny & Districts Horticultural Society first noted in the old minute books being welcomed as a visitor in October 1973 and, in 1975, Society meetings were held in her home (Pattemore House). Minutes and articles in the Nambour Chronicle show that Daisy was a consistent points scorer both in the Cut Flower and Floral Art sections in the Society monthly competitions with her roses, gerberas, stocks, lupins, pansies, snapdragons and flowering or berry shrubs. She was runner-up for the AW Webster (Patron) trophy in 1975, and won the AW Webster (Patron) trophy for pick of the bench in 1982 – no mean achievement given the level of competition that her fellow Society members provided. In the coming years there are plans to restore the gardens to reflect their history. Sunshine Coast Council currently has a heritage consultant developing plans for the garden’s revival, and members of the Maleny Garden Society have already been hard at work creating a number of gardens at the front of the house.

You Said It Re: Thermal coal and the reef
Sal Hopley (GC&M News May 10) has misunderstood. The coal price is quoted, always, in US dollars. It is widely known that the Adani mine's breakeven price is around the $100 thermal coal price (currently it's under $90). That puts it at the very outer edge of the cost curve for coal mines, and makes it uneconomic at today's prices. That's why it needs government subsidies to be built. Coal demand is sinking worldwide, and the price will keep falling to displace everything outside of $5060/ton. So to build the Adani project at all will only lower the coal price further and trigger the closure of other more efficient coal mines, some of which are in Australia, mostly in NSW. And as for all the jobs it will create, the Australia Institute has comprehensively debunked the 15,000 jobs claim: Adani’s hand-picked economic expert told a court that the project would create only 1,464 direct and indirect jobs, and that estimate was based on the average capital/labour ratio of existing coal mines. Since that court case, Adani have been keen to talk up how “high tech” their mine would be – now promising shareholders automation “from pit to port”. But even if we take Adani’s best-case scenario, and even if all of the 1,464 new jobs were drawn from the ranks of the 161,200 people who were unemployed in Queensland in February 2017, then the unemployment rate would fall from 6.4 per cent to, wait for it, 6.4 per cent. The impact of the Adani project on the Queensland economy would be so small that it wouldn’t shift the unemployment rate at the first decimal place. Hopley goes on to take issue with the world's climate scientists, who uniformly see the hand of mankindcaused global warming in the Reef's decline. I'd like to register my opinion of the big new sign on the Beerwah roundabout: It's okay. I really think that the money could have been spent constructing a smaller, much cheaper sign and improving the look of the roundabout itself! It's an eyesore, most of the time. Can't we put something impressive there to improve the look of the entrance to our town? I visit family in the Moreton Bay Council area regularly and they have beautiful roundabouts with lovely trees and plants, can't we do something similar which would be a really stand out entrance to our beautiful town area? Electricity usage and C02
In Paul Cleary's thought provoking book 'Too Much Luck' he argues that it is to Australia's detriment that the continent is so well endowed with natural deposits of coal, iron ore, uranium, etc, for two key reasons. Firstly, under the current set-up in this country, the bulk of the profits of mining go offshore. He compares Australia to Norway where mining (mostly oil and gas) is nationalised. Virtually all the profits go back into the country. They have a nest egg of around $500 billion. Curiously, we have a deficit of $500 billion. Secondly, he argues that in the long run Australia will be left with a legacy of vast environmental desecration and, relating to the first point, little to show for it. Do the costs of at least some of our mining activities outweigh the benefits? The debate between the advantages of renewable technologies versus burning coal for power continues to be highly polarised. Some keys truths may lay in a parallel space. For instance, the primary source of electricity production we will be using 50 years from now may not have been discovered yet. Also, our modern way of life depends on using a lot of electricity in our homes and businesses, yet could there a more fulfilling and healthier way of living with less dependency on so many electronic appliances and devices? Unfortunately modern life seems to be anything but simple – take C02. I agree with the comments by Olive Hocking (GC&M News April 26) that it is vital for plant growth and a little more in the atmosphere is likely to have benefits. For most of the time life has existed on the planet it has been higher than it is today at around 400ppm. For example, 50 million years ago it was around 2,000ppm and the biodiversity was greater. I certainly acknowledge your point regarding the low lighting levels at pre-dawn in the park or on the steps leading into the park. I attended the dawn service as well and didn't notice the inoperative light, which is a ‘pre-event check list’ lesson learned and will be rectified. In terms of improvements, I can confirm that council and the organisers are aware of the lighting and pathway issues and that council’s parks team is already working on the pathway extension and pathway lighting designs. So, subject to budget approval,

Thank you, Jo, for your thoughts on the new Beerwah sign. The entry statement sign for Beerwah at this location was a very important requirement stipulated by the community in the Beerwah PLACE+ consultation for the streetscape project. It is being delivered and funded as a concluding part of that transformative project. It has taken a long time because of the challenging design constraints and exhaustive approval process required by the Department of Main Roads – but we were determined to deliver on a key commitment made to the community during that process. I acknowledge not everyone will like the design but I’m absolutely sure the welcome sign will work well and hard for many years to come and further contributes to the unique character and identity of Beerwah. It will be more difficult to secure a home loan if you’ve been working for your current employer for less than a year. If you’ve been job hopping for a considerable amount of time it may affect your chances. It’s more likely that you’ll be granted a loan if you’ve been in the same job for 12 months than if you’ve had five different jobs over a two-year period. However, if you’ve only just started a new role or had several different jobs in
a short space of time, it’s still possible to secure a home loan – but you’ll need to demonstrate you’re in a strong financial position. Having a wealth of industry experience works in your favour. For example, if you’ve had a few different positions in the last two years in the same sector and you’ve been promoted, this may indicate to lenders that you’re progressing. Your job situation can also impact your chances of restructuring an existing mortgage or securing a new one. If you’ve recently begun a new job with a significantly higher salary, you might feel it’s time to upsize to a larger home or start making larger repayments to reduce your mortgage.
Lenders want to see evidence that you have stable employment, so it’s an advantage to wait until you’ve been in your current job for several months (at least longer than the typical three-month probation period ). My 2020 Vision for Maleny
There are many aspects of Maleny life being reviewed at present. It is an appropriate time to consider all of them as a total picture rather than consideration individually. These aspects include: Parking in Maleny, library enhancement, development in Maple and Coral Streets, the future of the old Police Station and community welfare. I offer the following proposals as a basis for serious discussion in our community: New Library – the Sunshine Coast Council team up with Rob Outridge from IGA, to include a new library in a building to be built on the land in Maple Street. The existing library would remain as a library-run activity centre. This concept would provide a purposedesigned library with much car parking at the rear. The car park at the rear would be part of the extension to the parking in Willow Lane. Community Garden – the landscaped areas within a new car park at the rear of the above building could be set up as a Community Garden. Food wastes from IGA could be composted for use in this garden. A community committee could be set up to run this garden One way traffic system – it is time to consider the traffic flow patterns along with the carparking as, surprisingly, they are interlinked. Coral Street would be two lanes one way north after crossing the Obi Obi Creek bridge. Maple Street would be two lanes one way south from the top of town near Myrtle Street. Parking would be head into the kerb on both sides of Maple Street. Myrtle Street would be two lanes one way towards the East. Willow Lane would be one way from North to South (opposite to the current direction). This layout would minimise conflict at the turn to the west at the intersection of Myrtle Street and
Coral Street plus at the intersection of Myrtle Street and Maple Street. Community Facility – The old police station could be converted to a shelter for domestic violence victims. Jim Straker Reesville
Plants and energy
A correspondent (May 3 GC&M News) invited me to read the article he selected to better my understanding of the value of CO2 to plants. Having perused his recommended reading, I read other papers on plants’ need of CO2. Among many papers, I found the following quotes re benefits of CO2 to plants: 1. “Thousands of laboratory and field experiments have conclusively demonstrated that enriching the air with carbon dioxide stimulates the growth and development of nearly all plants”. 2. “CO2 induced improvements … lead to development of more extensive and active root systems.” 3. “More CO2 in the air means more plant growth.” So why are The Greens so afraid of CO2? His claim (GC&M News, April 12) that global warming is caused by coal-sourced emissions, to use his own words, “flies in the face of all scientific evidence”. He accuses those who hold different views of “declaring war on facts because it suits (their) personal interests”. Surely, he would not believe that the high CO2 levels of the carboniferous period, millions of years ago, would be due to emissions of coal-powered generators. Scientists say these emissions came from volcanoes. In my view, claims that the Adani coal mine will have an adverse impact on The Great Barrier Reef is (to quote the writer again), “declaring war on
facts because it suits personal interests”. Transition to renewable energy generation should be done on a gradual well-managed and sensible economic basis – not in a panic driven, irrational abandonment of the well-tried, efficient, muchimproved technology of today’s coal-fired electricity generation. Re: Ken Dyer’s letter
Yassmin Abdel-Magied has freedom of speech in Australia, but it must be used respectfully. But I question the relationship between Anzac Day and the current treatment of refugees. I would like to see help given to the asylum seekers to stay where they are and help fix the problems in that country. We cannot help the whole world’s refugees – there are too many of them. A start would be to stop having children when conditions are so unfavourable - even the animals are smart enough to do this – children are not found under cabbage leaves. A comment on Yassmin’s hat: “the more religious the funnier the hat”, does not help credibility in my view. On Anzac Day, I respect the soldiers and their sacrifice but everyone should remember war is a business the same as religion is. But it is necessary sometimes. School News Leadership Incursion develops skills
Year 11 students at Beerwah High were recently involved in a school Incursion, a day on the school grounds that included a range of activities designed for the whole group to get to know each other a little better and to complete fun activities that would develop teamwork, respect, communication skills and comradery. The morning sessions saw the students divided into small groups to participate in the Amazing Race, which consisted of seven small activities that each group had to complete in 45 minutes timeframe, resulting in the groups working well together and encouraging each other to complete their tasks. In the middle session, the small groups were brought together into two larger groups. This time the activities were a balloon tower build, which they successfully completed, with prizes awarded for the highest towers. Students were also challenged to set up 2,500 dominoes and set them off. While they weren’t able to successfully complete this task, they definitely gave it their best shot. The last session of the day included a version of speed dating where students were asked to stand face to face and talk to someone they may have not met before. After a shaky start the Student Centre was abuzz with conversations. In the final activity, students were shown how to deliver a ‘Big Up’ – how to praise someone and acknowledge someone for a job well done. At the end of the day the leadership nomination process for the next leadership term was opened.

Under 8’s Day at Peachester State School is a fun and welcoming way to introduce younger siblings, future students and their parents to the school environment. Peachester State School is once again hosting their Under 8’s Alex introducing he r sister Carys to he Day on Tuesday May 23, starting r school at last year ’s Under 8’s Day from 9am. The children get an opportunity to play and interact with the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students with numerous play and craft stations set up in the school grounds. The Senior students assist with activities such as painting, gluing, facepainting, giant building blocks, fairy bread making and sand-pit play. Parents and carers are welcome to join in all activities. Families do not need to be affiliated with the school to attend and we welcome anyone wishing to visit our school. While you are here be sure to bring your little ones for a walk through our Forest Walk and pay a visit to our school vegetable garden.
Cents for Centenary On April 21 the Beerburrum State School launched ‘Cents for Centenary’ to mark the one year countdown to our great school’s 100th birthday. Each classroom has been issued with a money tin for collecting donations from friends and family. The program will run for six months. At the end of that time the class who has collected the most money will win a pizza party. Funds raised will go towards costs for our School Centenary on April 22, 2018. Centre News The Pirate Ship is here! In exciting Centre news, the highly anticipated Pirate Ship has finally arrived! Recently delivered as part of the ‘Outside Play’ area expansion, the new piece of play equipment is proving a massive hit with children of all ages at the Centre. In keeping with a commitment to recycling and sustainability, the Pirate Ship has been created out of recycled pallets and the new equipment is providing a wealth of new play opportunities. “The kids were just so excited when the Pirate Ship was delivered at the beginning of May. Even after a couple of weeks the excitement hasn’t dulled at all as they continue to use their imagination to create numerous pretend and creative play opportunities,” says Centre Supervisor Ange Hardey. To celebrate the arrival of ‘the ship’, a special Pirate Day was held at the beginning of the month where staff and children dressed up as pirates, talked like pirates and engaged in a number of pirate inspired activities. The expansion of the outdoor play area is evolving well with a ‘dry creek bed’ installed recently to further inspire creative play. The children love following the flat stone path with their trucks and toys and it enhances the ‘natural feel’ of the outdoor setting. Future plans include a native garden and an expansion of the edible gardens.

The Maleny Film Society presents the US/Australian drama 'Lion' this weekend at the Maleny Community Centre on Saturday, May 20 at 7.15pm and on Sunday, May 21 at 4pm. Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman star in this real-life story of an Indian boy who became lost after a long train journey at age five, struggled to survive on the streets, and ended up in an orphanage where he was adopted by a Tasmanian couple. His attempts to find his parents lead nowhere, as his pronunciation of his name (and the name of his village) are slightly wrong. As an adult, with the advent of satellite imagery on Google Earth, and painstaking research, he begins to track down his mother and siblings. The film raises issues of cross-cultural adoptions, as he struggles with his identity and the privilege he now has, compared with his family’s poverty. The film is visually arresting throughout, with fine performances from its stars. On Saturday night doors open at 6pm with dinner being catered for by Spaghetti Junction. There will be a bar, and tea, coffee and slices will be available. Tickets are $13 non-members, $8 students with ID, and they can be purchased by the general public at the door only.

Rev Chris Johnson - Glasshouse Country Baptist Church One of my favourite books in The Bible is a book called Proverbs. The book contrasts wisdom and foolishness using the imagery of two women, Lady Wisdom and Madam Folly. Lady Wisdom doesn’t appear to be appealing. She asks, “How long are you going to be stupid for! Listen to me and pay attention to me while I tell you off and correct you and point you in the right direction.” Madam Folly on the other hand is presented as an alluring, seductively dressed woman, she is loud and fun, she loves to live life on the edge. She promises happiness and gratification, she flatters her victims with many words and promises. Be honest, which would you choose? Proverbs tells us the end of those who fall in love with Lady Wisdom and Madam Folly. The person that chose wisdom is successful and strong, like a well planted tree that survives the storms of
life, whereas the person who chose folly doesn’t even know it, but soon he is trapped paying a profound cost. Following wisdom’s ways is hard work and at first seems rather strange – why would anyone open themselves up for criticism? Why not focus in on the positive and listen to what you want to hear. It takes wisdom, discernment and strength to figure out that sometimes we need to hear unpleasant truths and that we aren’t as good as we would like to think we are. People who follow wisdom’s ways seem strange and weird to those who fall in love with folly – but the final outcome could not be more different. Where do you start to get this wisdom? Proverbs 9:10 says: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” To fear the Lord is to say: “You are God, I am not. You are the boss, I am not.” Isn’t it time we all got wise?

Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wonders played hosts to the current title-holding Yandina side at the Maleny courts on Sunday in overcast but pleasant tennis conditions. It was always going to be a big ask given the calibre of the opposition, but the team performed admirably, finally going down 7 sets/5 sets and 60/54 in games. There were a few walking wounded, with Jani off his death bed to play and Frank a long way from flash. Excellent performances pretty well across the board with the ladies (Jane and Caroline) the standouts. To get that close augers well for the rest of the season with strength still to come in the Wonders outfit. We look forward with relish to the rest of the Season! Playing at home in Div 2 the Witta Wompoos had a good close win against Nambour by 7 sets to 5. Going into the final set it was touch and go but the established and oh so reliable pairing of Cudmore and Cudmore prevailed yet again. Thanks to Ernie, Gavin, Paula, Liz, Jim and Denis. Great work team. The Wagtails were washed out. Witta Whistlers had fun and a good win against the Caloundra Racquettes on Friday. Brenda Warner and Maree Hooley must thank Dee South and Paula Cudmore for filling in and playing so well. Good news is that Paula has now registered and become a Whistler! Final score – 6 sets to 2, 45 games to 28. The Wildcats were up against top of the ladder Caloundra Skylarks. It was very close all day with an unbelievable number of deuces. Pauline, Annie, Libby and Jenie were just ahead going into the final 2 sets but unfortunately the Skylarks saved their best to last and pipped us at the post. Final score 3-5 sets 34-40. Thursday, May 11: Winners of the day were Clive Sinton and Kevin Beasley with two wins plus 50 points, runners up were Doug Sweedman and David Wiley with 26 points in the first game. Lucky draw went to Greg Sauer and Barry Kirk. Thursday is becoming quite a popular afternoon with 40 people turning up for a game of bowls last week. Again, please be aware as soon as we have over 16 teams people will have to play triples even if you are down for pairs. Saturday, May 13: Men's B Grade Singles semi-finals with two great games of bowls were played in wet conditions with Barry Kirk defeating John Annakin 25-5, and Mac Townson defeating Rob Scullion 25-21. In the final Mac Townson was too good for Barry Kirk winning 2517. Men’s A Singles have closed. Due to the high number of entries we have had to put a third round on Saturday. If you have drawn a round one match and don’t think you can play three games in a day, please organise with your opponent to play your game before the Saturday. Remember to organise your own markers. Men’s Fours nominations close this Thursday. Monday Monthly Jackpot Open Triples will be back on May 22. Please get your teams in now. The Jackpot wasn’t won when +20 was drawn from the barrel so will be worth more money this week. Wednesday evening the rain caused bowls to be cancelled and four chaps who travelled to Kilcoy never got to roll a bowl as their games were also cancelled. They did have a very nice morning tea before returning so it wasn’t a completely wasted trip. Friday morning the High School students played and the winners were Tyron Engle, Macale Goulton, Zac McGrade and Dean Ryan. Friday afternoon there were four rinks of Scroungers and those successful on their respective rinks were Matt Fulton, Allan Cook, Ray Pantlin and Rob Norris. Three members were present to claim their Sponsors’ Prize winnings in Ian Porter for Brouhaha, Kay Gesch for Daylily Nursery and Jim King for Maleny Dairies. Ian Hansen was the lucky Money Board winner. Saturday the rain prevented any Championship Matches being played. This week there was Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday morning, the Twilight Challenge Wednesday evening and Scroungers Friday after noon. BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES Contributed by Neil Lovett The big news in Australian croquet circles is that the Australian team, spearheaded by the brilliant Fletcher brothers from Victoria, won the world championship. The four principal croquet nations, Australia, England, New Zealand and the United States, compete in the world championship for the MacRobertson Shield, originally donated by Australian confectioner, Sir Macpherson Robertson, so it’s fair to say that our team brought home the chocolates. On the first Sunday of this month we held our Come and Try Day. The date is set by the state body who did not know of competing events in the Hinterland, and so our numbers were down on recent years. Nevertheless we had a group of enthusiastic learners, with some eager to return, and a most gracious letter of thanks from one of our guests. On Thursday at home, Vince Carbery and Helen Andrews played a handicap doubles game of Association Croquet against Ken Barker and Ted Gardner, losing 14-17 despite some very good shots, and Frances Harper played Jan Barnes, our Tasmanian visitor, losing 11-17. Contributed by Cameron Taylor San Training Centre recently sent a team of eight fighters to the Gold Coast Open taekwondo competition. Held in the new Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, which will be one of the key venues for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the event attracted over 500 entries from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, New Caledonia and Nepal. Our team comprised of Christine Mortimer, Charlie Bidgood, Myles Owen, Aaron Lerch, Emma Hall, Joey Mortimer, and Reuben Tidy, and finished with three Gold, three Silver and one Bronze. Some notable performances on the day were from Charlie Bidgood who won his first ever gold in the cadet yellow belt division, Joey Mortimer who won two close fights to claim gold in his division, and Reuben Tidy who finished with bronze after a loss to New Caledonia in the semi finals. Reuben showed excellent spirit in this fight. After New Caledonia claimed a large lead in the first round, Reuben was able to make a comeback in the final two rounds, eventually losing by only a point. The team from San will continue to build towards the National Championships which are being held in Bendigo in October. Coaches are encouraged by the results from such a high level regional competition, while elite fighters Cameron and Kasia will be heading to New Zealand this weekend where they will fight at a major competition on the world circuit which gives them an opportunity to advance in their world rankings. For those wishing to see what taekwondo competition is about, San Training Centre will be hosting an interclub development competition on May 27. This competition will also be used as a fundraiser to help support the team with the cost of travel to Nationals. Details are available by calling Cameron on 0437 571 540.
